The Inconvenient Truths Series #6: A Hell of a Change!

Hello everysoul!

Of course the "shocking" news today for many is the political sea change in the US. On the surface it seems important but in the grander scheme of things I don't think it will change much. The Republicans where already monkey-wrenching as best as they could the Obama administration, so that won't change. But since they don't have enough votes in the House of Representatives to overturn the vetos Obama will certainly use to block any of their pro-corpocracy legislations in the next 2 years, they won't have much tangible results to show for their electoral prowess when the next round of elections will come in 2 years - unless of course they stop their counterproductive obstruction and actually help Obama move his legislative agenda, like dealing with global warming and shifting the US government priorities away from war-making and empire-building/maintenance towards actually helping the US economy out of its doldrums - not just subsidizing the venally/greedy rich ones on Wall Street but actually helping the less fortunate ones on Main Street - many of them actually living there, hand to mouth, homeless, desperate. However, I don't think anyone will be holding their breath over that one... Unless... (fill the blank with your own imaginative scenario...)

To me the real news are included below for your review: The near miraculous outcome of the Convention on Biological Diversity meeting in Nagoya, a great step forward amply framed below against the frightening quickening of species extinction on Earth; the growing rumors of a possible issuance of a new global currency to replace the US dollar as the lynchpin currency of the global economy - because of its quickening devaluation prompted by the Federal Reserve printing of endless billions of fiat money like there is no tomorrow, which makes many nations very unhappy right now; the exposure by Wikileaks of ever more war crimes and torture following the US Godzilla' rampage in Iraq; the dark legalistic shenanigans planned by Monsanto & co to control farming around the world - still with some welcomed "bottom line" bad news for this truly fiendish company; and much much more as usual. You'll also find a new section featuring brilliant ideas and initiatives everyone should know about - and you are all welcomed to submit to me similar discoveries you may make in your web browsing for possible inclusion in future compilations.

As usual feel free to share what feel good to network to you. This is a collectively driven global awakening effort and all hands are needed on the "deck" right now as we move at warp speed towards the 2012 singularity...

With Love and deep appreciation to know you are all there - and to feel you all every Sunday ;-)

"There is far too much evidence for me to discard ufology as speculative and I have been witness to more than a few incidents of this nature in my own backyard so to speak. (...) The 2012 predictions are a BIG focus just now and I see this as a double edged sword. For some people it is an opportunity to cash in on the next best thing: the Woodstock of the new millennium. Others are frightened by doomsday and Armageddon versions of Earth’s meltdown, but there is some value in looking at history in regard to this as an event. More people are seeing the planet Earth as a living Being that we are affecting for good or ill and in general there is more focus on how we can bring health to the planet, each other and future generations with responsible actions today. I think that it is obvious that ‘change is in the air’ and that choices are at the doorstep of each individual, each country and their governments, all aspects of financial institutions, our educational systems, health systems, etc. We are in a time of great change and that change will present opportunities that can really be productive to a leap in our life on this planet for all peoples if we respond as a collective from the heart of love. We have abilities as people made in the image of the Creator to be creative in how we step forward into the future and more people are awakening to this aspect within themselves more and more. There is a confidence building in people that is allowing them to act from their individual response to situations rather than being led into a general thought process that is blasted at them and keeping them from thinking on their own. This may not be true across the board, but in general I am seeing this happen in my everyday experience with the people I meet. People are questioning. That is how change begins. (...) Creative thought is the driving force in all progress along with faith, hope and love. I’m thankful that we have this opportunity to see such possibilities for our future on this planet and I’m glad that we are all part of that in the very individual ways we each present ourselves. If we can get beneficial help from a Galactic friend than I welcome it! I don’t know if it will be part of my experience or not, but I hope that it is. It’s a big world out there and now we have the Universe to explore as well. We still don’t have it ‘right’ as far as Earth dilemma’s are concerned, but maybe we are turning a corner and maybe we need help to see that we don’t screw it up."

"Presently, all of humanity is facing the wall of death. The experiment of intelligent and submissive/rebellious sheep is coming to an end. Millennia of human suffering will disappear with the sheep, but not before it reaches a final climax. This paroxysm will facilitate our decision to accept the death of the old species and its survival program. It will end forever our hope of an external saviour that could never come because he never existed. We keep hoping that the world will change, that humanity will get better, but we keep bumping onto the same mistake - we want to change the world without changing ourselves. I know for a fact that I cannot change anything but myself. Now, I am working on doing this with all my energy. I am no longer dreaming of a better, more just, more harmonious world. I don't want an air-conditioned hell. No! I want heaven on Earth. Each day, our human species sinks a little lower in a sea of dementia and absurdity. Homo sapiens is becoming extinct. With it, the old survival program - work, suffer, age and die - will disappear forever. We will finally have access to our true identity as a sovereign, immortal and omnipotent being. Let us rejoice!"

"Over the course of many life experiences, not all of which were pleasant, I came to understand the power of our beliefs, thoughts and attitude in molding and creating our reality and experiences in life... I have maintained a lifelong zeal for creating a world of peace, justice, harmony and brotherhood. And out of this I have looked deeply into discovering what is the "bottom line" in bringing about such a world. From this I have come to see that authentic and fundamental change in the world really requires a profound change of human consciousness. The great wisdom keepers of the ages have always understood this; hence the old adage "As A Man Thinketh, So Is He." The greatest philosophers & wisdom keepers, both ancient and modern, have understood that our outer reality is a reflection of our inner reality; how we see ourselves and how we see the world. It is from our inner reality - our consciousness - that we create our outer world, both individually and collectively as cultures & nations. If we are not happy with our outer world, we begin to change it from within. As individuals change, cultures change. As cultures change, countries change. As countries change, the world changes. It all begins with our consciousness and that is based on our thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and perspective. When these change, we change. When we change, the world changes. This understanding is the foundation of our program."

"The corporate attempt to end US farming and set up their own court system over all Americans far outstrips the destruction of jobs, the forcing of millions from their homes, Citizens United, and the Wall Street theft. Now, through S 510, the corporations seek to remove all bounds on what they themselves do, on what they can do to any who oppose them, and on what they can seize. And this is only on the food side. The threats to health are as profound. S 510 would remove the long sought cure for cancer as well as cures for an endless array of diseases, by removing access to supplements (one in particular). S 510 would suppress a medical revolution poised to free mankind from all fear of disease, leaving the country instead at the mercy of a pharmaceutical industry with a disturbing history and recent threatening actions with vaccines. With S 510, those behind GMOs, vaccines, and drugs seek to remove access to normal farming, normal food and to nutrition (health) itself. They are seeking total dominance over what sustains life and over people. S 510 is not a food safety bill. What is it, then? Is it a corporate enabling act? Does it open the door to corporate control over all Americans, all food supplies and health resources, and all US farmland?"

Timeraiser - IT IS LIKE SPEED DATING FOR VOLUNTEERISM (It is all neatly explained in this short video)
Timeraiser was conceptualized in 2002 in response to a group of friends wondering how it could be easier to find meaningful, relevant volunteer opportunities. Now, 7 years and 10 Timeraisers later, it is amazing that this grass-roots initiative has flourished into a well-known, annual event that operates in 6 cities across Canada. (...) By the end of 2009 the Timeraiser will have: - Generated over 51,000 volunteer hours - Invested $300,000 in the careers of emerging artists - Engaged 5,000 Canadians to pick up a cause - Worked with 250+ charitable organizations. What We Do: - We promote civic engagement amongst Canadians in the early stages of their careers - We help volunteer agencies find the skilled people their organizations need - We improve the experience of bringing people to causes and causes to people. Our vision for the Timeraiser is to make it the most memorable, engaging and impactful civic engagement program in the country. Our hope is that, in a few years, thousands of Canadians will be able to trace their engagement in their community back to the Timeraiser. We want to plant the seeds of life-long civic involvement. -- A BRILLIANT IDEA THAT SHOULD QUICKLY GO WORLDWIDE!

One Laptop Per Child
Mission Statement: To create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning. When children have access to this type of tool they get engaged in their own education. They learn, share, create, and collaborate. They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future. Read more. Most of the nearly two-billion children in the developing world are inadequately educated, or receive no education at all. One in three does not complete the fifth grade. The individual and societal consequences of this chronic global crisis are profound. Children are consigned to poverty and isolation-just like their parents-never knowing what the light of learning could mean in their lives. At the same time, their governments struggle to compete in a rapidly evolving, global information economy, hobbled by a vast and increasingly urban underclass that cannot support itself, much less contribute to the commonwealth, because it lacks the tools to do so. Wayne Madsen: White House In Crisis
Note from Jean: I have no idea if there is any shred of validity to the slew of negative rumors reported by Madsen who, according to this Wikipedia entry on him, is a "conspiracy theorist and conspiracy minded blogger", but you may want to take a look at this... More on this apparent crisis through White House Insider: Obama Battling Severe Depression. The Message from Source I get - or call it a hunch if you prefer - about this situation is that it is certainly true that the grinding responsibilities of dealing with such a hefty challenge has been taking a toll of this man. But the fact also is that most of us in the new consciousness/spiritual community have been taking a hands-off, wait-and-see attitude towards this man, adopting a stance that has not been necessarily helpful towards assisting this soul in this considerably demanding life mission. Needless to say the pressure of destructive, mean-spirited comments from those who have a vested interest in seeing him fail, as well as the growing popular dissatisfaction over the increasingly untenable economic situation of this country harming millions of people have probably contributed in nurturing a distancing attitude towards him. Also the facts on the ground - often reported in my compilations - of the continuing evils perpetrated under his administration in the course of pursuing the so-called war on terror initiated by his predecessor, and the continuing bleeding of his country's resources and world credibility caused by the never-ending sufferings and horrors of war in Afghanistan and Iraq are now falling squarely on his shoulders, a result of unrealistic expectations placed on a man with no experience on dealing with such complicated matters, based in part on the heightened hopes generated during his presidential campaign that he would somehow, as if by magic, fix everything that is wrong in this country and in the world only because he said "Yes we can!" No matter what the outcome of the midterm US elections in a few days from now will be, one thing is sure, this soul and the millions of other souls whose future depends on this man succeeding in his life mission need our own unreserved energetic support. So the core of the Message I hear within me about this whole matter is to directly tell his soul "We love you"... and "Yes you can master the problems at hand and achieve what you came here to do." ... "Refocus fully, be trustful that a Way ahead will be found and the Light of Love in us all will prevail."

PS from Jean: I shared this above with Suzy Ward, seeking her comments on this ...

"This information about Obama's alleged depression seems in line with Hatonn's forceful comment in your/Matthew's last message - "We feel his discouragement and exhaustion as the dark ones keep stirring up trouble to dash his efforts everywhere." - and I strongly feel there is a need for such a call for unreserved spiritual support for his soul. Let's hope people will hear it despite all the bad pr his administration has gotten lately. "

...and she replied the following:

"I took time to read Madsen's interview and disagree with his opinion that Obama felt his orator skills would be enough to be an effective president -- that's paraphrasing, but the gist of it. A few days ago I saw some report about Rahm Emmanuel and the others abandoning ship because of Obama's paranoia and depression, etc. Most of it didn't feel right and Matthew said it shouldn't -- that was partly a long overdue housecleaning of people working against Obama, in some cases he felt their experience would help the administration and later learned they were undermining him, and others left to cover their asses. Of course he's not paranoid, but naturally he's depressed about the powerful opposition that's beyond his control and he's worried about death threats to him and his family that are tied to his acknowledging other civilizations, exposing the truth about 9/11, and the Illuminati's global network, including Hillary's high standing -- he's being pressured to replace Biden with her and he figures that would be enlisting for his assassination. What's so crucially needed is for the truth about all of that to come out, but the collective energy of negative feelings and thoughts about Obama is empowering all those who are against him. No wonder Hatonn spoke so bluntly! Maybe it can arouse some positive thoughts about Obama if you include that in the beginning comments section of your next compilation."

So here are some excerpts from Hatonn's message which can be read in its entirety at
(...) We have been given leave by God to use stronger methods wherever necessary to dismantle the Illuminati’s remaining power bases. This does NOT mean killing anyone — God never sanctions killing, nor would we ever want to do that! For quite some time we have been permitted to override the dark ones’ free will by blocking their powerful weaponry when they attempt more events like “9/11,” and we have done that on numerous occasions. Now we also can foil their efforts to create major disruptions by blocking their communication systems and transportation modes and by diverting their intelligence couriers. We also have God’s permission to temporarily relocate a few key individuals to areas where they can do no mischief whatsoever. This is done somewhat like the cloaking of our ships in an invisible force field, which makes the disappearance baffling to those individuals’ co-workers too. So, even though you won’t see evidence of our new allowances, you know that now we’re taking even longer strides to help you rid your world of dark deeds.
(...) Generally speaking, people know US president Barack Obama only by what he says and what your media report. Most don’t have clue about what goes on “behind closed doors.” You see stubborn partisan politics. We see Obama’s powerful enemies within and far beyond the government who are determined to smash to smithereens his attempts at reform. You see him looking worried and know some call him weak and say he’s leading his country in the wrong direction. We feel his pain as his efforts to improve the lives of all who are downtrodden are scuttled by a few self-servers. You see him trying to end foreign conflicts and think he should stay home and fix what’s wrong in his own country. We feel his discouragement and exhaustion as the dark ones keep stirring up trouble to dash his efforts everywhere. The folks you call “pundits” speculate whether voters will give Obama a second term in office. We sing his praises for staying the course day after day! He has to deal with some of the very ones who threaten his life and his family’s, yet his intention to keep working for a peaceful world without poverty anywhere remains firm. You know that he and his family are protected by the Christed light grid around them, but Obama doesn’t know that. You know that he is a major part of the Golden Age master plan, but he doesn’t know that either. He acts on his convictions, principles, aspirations and innate experience as an honored leader in a highly evolved civilization who agreed to serve Earth in the most demanding position on the planet. If everyone could know this soul as we do, all the doubts and carping about him would come to a screeching halt and you would thank God for this man’s courage, wisdom, spiritual and moral integrity and his willingness to persevere! You know that your thoughts create what happens in your life, in your world, and everything you do affects everything else in this universe. So if any of you are among the carpers and doubters, stop that and start helping Obama to succeed! He’s working for you — do the same for him, yourselves, your world and our universe! You don’t have to become political activists. Just keep your hearts and minds in the right place and help others do it too. We’re in the trenches with you and we need your help—we have more than enough hindrance from the dark ones on Earth! I know I’ve sounded harsh, but sometimes people don’t respond until it’s “tough love” time, and it is with love for you that I’ve spoken. And not just for myself and my people. I’m representing countless others who feel the same but don’t have a forum like this to express it. CLIP

Is hard currency on its way out? Introducing the new virtual world currency. (October 28, 2010)
The new virtual world currency is an index of the world's 15 largest economies, weighted by their gross domestic product, adjusted for purchasing power parity. -- When discussing reserve currency alternatives to the US dollar, conversation almost inevitably returns to the International Monetary Fund's "synthetic reserve asset," the Special Drawing Right (SDR). However, the SDR basket of currencies is noticeably antiquated in its design, including only the currencies of industrialized nations… namely British Pounds, Euros, Japanese Yen, and US Dollars. This week, foreign exchange manager Overlay Asset Management has announced a currency basket it's launching in order to offer a more up-to-date "virtual world reserve currency." (...) The global "currency war" - as many are calling it - continues to heat up, with no obvious resolution in sight. While it wouldn't be a simple, quick, or painless process to replace the US dollar as reserve currency, it seems inevitable that calls for just such action are bound to increase, especially if currently loose US monetary policy - including quantitative easing in particular - continues unabated. NOTE from Jean: According to an announcement made by Benjamin Fulford (I'm not sure he is a reliable source as his stuff is just sooo wild... but we sure live in exceptional times and who knows! perhaps we are finally getting some cosmic traction with the global spiritual awakening juggernaut we have been fostering for years - make sure to read below the other material I lifted from the Vigilant Citizen website) on October 25, 2010 in Major announcements due for mid-November, legal action against illuminati possible this week (...) "Discussions on a new currency to replace the US dollar continue and the latest scuttlebutt is that the plan to announce the Amero as a dollar replacement is in serious trouble. It now looks more likely that the Hong Kong dollar will become the basis for a new international currency to replace the dollar. However, the issue is in a flux still and negotiations continue." And there is also this: "I am SaLuSa from Sirius, and will tell you that our focus on Earth is very much more powerful than any previous time. It is the nearness of success in getting the changes really underway that is taking our attention. Many countries are now moving towards agreement as to how the new financial system will work. It is nearly ready to be announced and put into being. It will ensure a sound system that is backed by precious metals, and will not be subject to the interference of the past by the Illuminati." - SaLuSa 1-November-2010

Plastic to Oil Fantastic - Japanese converts plastic to oil (April 13, 2009)
More details in this article:
The Japanese company Blest has developed one of the smallest and safest oil-to-plastic conversion machines out on the market today. It's founder and CEO, Akinori Ito is passionate about using this machine to change the way people around the world think about their plastic trash. From solving our landfill and garbage disposal issues to reducing our oil dependency on the Middle East, his machine may one day be in every household across Japan. While holding up a bag of trash, he states, "It's a waste to throw away, isn't it? This is a treasure." It's one of the last bastions of Canadian wilderness: the Great Bear Rainforest, on BC's north and central Pacific coast. Home to bountiful marine mammals, fish, and wildlife - from orca and humpback whales to wild salmon, wolves, grizzlies, and the legendary spirit bear - this spectacular place is now threatened by a proposal from Enbridge to bring an oil pipeline and supertankers to this fragile and rugged coast. More infos and another spectacular video and action suggested through - NOTE from Jean: The fight to stop this new horror in BC is similar to the fight to stop shale gas exploration and development in the St. Lawrence river valley in Quebec, a new environmental plight also threatening British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and New Brunswick. See... Shale gas in Quebec: immediate exploration moratorium needed. The prospect of shale gas pollution in Quebec has been compared to the tar sands exploitation in Alberta, one of the worst man-made environmental disasters on Earth. All Canadians must band together to boot Steven Harper's Conservative Party out of power and elect instead a government that will stand up to the oil giants - instead of subsidizing them and allowing them to do anything they want - and put a permanent end to their atrocious crimes against nature. Moreover, the entire world must take up this fight against shale gas exploitation - which virtually destroys the bowels of the Earth through pumping high pressure water laden with millions of liters of toxic and carcinogenic chemicals to fracture the shale gas deposits thus freeing the methane but also ensuring that the aquifer will be permanently polluted and unfit for human consumption and agricultural use... a most unconscionable crime in a world with fast-dwindling water resources. The shale industry is now spreading its tentacles to 4 continents - heck! even Obama is soon going to peddle their technology in India! (see MoU on shale gas during Obama visit) and China plans to go big time into shale gas exploitation (See Unconventional gas demand set to soar by 2020). The industry has also big plans for Europe (See: First Well Drilled in European Shale Gas Could Impact Land Values and Stock Prices) The writing is on the wall: The whole planet is now going to be targeted by those drillers from hell and hundreds of millions of people will eventually suffer the consequences while a handful of large energy corporations and land tenants will get ever more richer. And of course the CO2 emissions will continue to rise as the overall emissions from shale gas exploitation are nearly just as bad as those from tar sands exploitation. You thought producing biofuels from edible food was a bad idea? Wait to see the global disaster shale gas will unleash... TAKE ACTION HERE NOW!

Scientists find first real evidence you CAN see the future

RFID Chips now have Cyanide In Them (May 22, 2009)

"Can a microscopic tag be implanted in a person's body to track his every movement? There's actual discussion about that. You will rule on that-mark my words-before your tenure is over."

- U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden, asked during Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the nomination of John Roberts to be chief justice of the Supreme Court

"Although microchip implantation might be introduced as a voluntary procedure, in time, there will be pressure to make it mandatory. A national identification system via microchip implants could be achieved in two stages. Upon introduction as a voluntary system, the microchip implantation will appear to be palatable. After there is a familiarity with the procedure and a knowledge of its benefits, implantation would be mandatory."

-Dr. Elaine M. Ramesh, patent attorney for Franklin Pierce Law Center

"Now imagine a world in which every newborn baby immediately has a little capsule implanted under his armpit. Inside are monitors, tiny amounts of hormones, a wireless transmitter and receiver.... From birth, no moment in a person's life will go unmonitored."

-Joseph Farah, Whistleblower magazine

(...) According to information released by the company, the implantable transceiver "sends and receives data and can be continuously tracked by gps (Global Positioning Satellite) technology." The transceiver's power supply and actuation system are unlike anything ever created. When implanted within a body, the device is powered electromechanically through the movement of muscles and can be activated either by the "wearer" or by the monitoring facility. In the wake of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, an information technology report highlighted the company's additional plans to study implantable chips as a method of tracking terrorists. "We've changed our thinking since September 11 [2001]," a company spokesman said. "Now there's more of a need to monitor evil activities." As a result, PositiveID has been offering the company's current incarnation of implantable rfid as "a tamper-proof means of identification for enhanced e-business security...tracking, locating lost or missing individuals, tracking the location of valuable property [this includes humans], and monitoring the medical conditions of at-risk patients." While PositiveID offers testimony that safeguards have been implemented to ensure privacy in connection with its implantable microchips, some believe privacy is the last thing internal radio transmitters will protect-that in fact the plan to microchip humanity smacks of the biblical mark of the Beast. Has an end-times spirit indeed been pushing for adoption of this technology this generation? Consider the following:
(...) The list above continues to accumulate, causing a growing number to wonder if rfid adoption will, for all practical purposes, result in every man, woman, boy, and girl in the developed world having an id chip inside them (like animals worldwide already do) sometime this century. Students of eschatology (the study of end-times events) find it increasingly difficult to dismiss how this all looks and feels like movement toward fulfilling Revelation 13:16-17: "And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." Real Life Action Hero: Guillermo "El Coco" Farinas - AN AMAZINGLY DEDICATED SOUL!
Guillermo "El Coco" Farinas is afraid of one thing. It's not war; he fought one in Angola and was decorated for bravery. It's not the Cuban government; Farinas made his name speaking out against the communists in power, with 11 years in prison to prove it. It's not a slow, excruciating death, which he's encountered time and time again in no less than 23 hunger strikes. The one thing that scares El Coco is defeat. "The only fear I have is of failing the Cuban people and the campaign for democracy in Cuba," he says. With his long record in the ring of political dissent, it's probably easier to list the battles that backed El Coco down than the wars he's waged. At last count, that number remains zero. From the trenches of Angola's civil war to the confines of Cuban jails to hospital wards where intravenous machines forced life into the career hunger striker, Farinas has been left frail, wounded and scarred. His gallbladder's gone, and anticoagulants keep his blood from clotting; chalk it up to a life in protest. But at 48, El Coco's nothing if not determined. His last hunger strike, inspired by the death of fellow dissident Orlando Zapata, lasted 134 days and ended in the release of 52 political prisoners in Cuba.Today, Farinas added Europe's 2010 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to his resume of humanitarian awards. More than 6 billion people crowd the planet, all born to stay busy doing one thing or another until time runs out. Only a fraction make it their life's work to help those starved of food, water, and human rights. They, like Farinas, are true action heroes. For the remaining percentage lucky enough to trade 40 hours a week for a little joie de vivre and a foothold in the middle class, fear not. It's easy to don a cape and become a Wonder Woman or Man of Steel in your own right.Unfortunately, it's easier still to stay a supervillain: just do nothing. Farinas lives in Santa Clara, the central Cuban city of his birth. WATCH Guillermo Fariñas : nearly 40 days on hunger strike - Reporters Without borders 2010 - How many more deaths will be needed in Cuban prisons? This question has been more pressing than ever since political prisoner Orlando Zapata Tamayos death on 23 February. Some independent journalists such as Guillermo Fariñas, who is not currently detained, and Darsi Ferrer, who is in prison, have decided to follow Zapatas example by going on an indefinite hunger strike to press for the release of the prisoners of conscience who are in poorest health.

Political Prisoners - An estimated 2,250 people are in jail for political reasons in Burma alone
Around the world, thousands of people are imprisoned for their beliefs, race, gender, sexuality or for speaking out against their government. These political prisoners are human rights defenders, political figures, labor activists, artists, journalists, and average citizens, and often they are never even charged with a crime. Some have become icons in their incarceration, such as South African President Nelson Mandela, who served 27 years in prison for demanding political change, and Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi, locked up or under house arrest for 14 of the past 20 years for dissent. But for every standout there are thousands of nameless others locked away around the world, from Iran to Cuba, Vietnam to Zimbabwe, and dozens more countries worldwide. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Help Free Wrongly Imprisoned Burmese Citizens - Join the Human Rights Watch campaign to free Burma's 2100 political prisoners by 2010. TAKE PART! More than 2,100 political prisoners suffer in Burma's squalid prisons. In the lead-up to the 2010 elections, it is crucial now to call for the release of all political prisoners in Burma.

Loving Earth Included in the SL Destination Guide (October 5, 2010) - The Love Foundation gets CNN iReport coverage for their meditation sessions!
The Love Foundation Inc, a non-profit organisation, holds a Global Love Day on May 1 each year involving 136 countries. The Foundation has become well established in Second Life over the last year. Besides their main SL Office in the Plush Nonprofit Commons sim, they also have use of a beautiful virtual forest called 'Loving Earth' which is owned by Philip McGillivary. Philip has provided a tranquil and atmospheric location where people can visit and chill out. Love Foundation founder and President Harold W Becker (avatar HB Eternal) and his members, use Loving Earth to meet and hold meditation sessions (there is a meditation session each Sunday at 10am (SLT)). There was good news this week, the Loving Earth sim has now been included in the Destination Guide produced by Linden Labs. Only top-notch SL sites are listed in the Guide and Loving Earth takes pride of place amongst the best places to visit. I travelled over to have a look around and the forest is stunning, you can even climb the rainbow and sit and meditate on the mountaintop. Philip says in his profile " Loving Earth? Come meditate and contemplate in an utterly sublime environment like the Pandora forest, and meet others for whom unconditional love is to be realised, and this is a place where you may feel that unconditional love could be an ever-present reality for all of us." I think Philip sums it up, everyone is welcome and it's a place away from all the stresses of everyday life, it's bound to become a favourite location for new and old avatars alike who want to experience peace and love. The world is shaking! All the seismographs around the entire world are activating at the very same time!!!! To review the current readings... U.S.A.:

Earthquakes Worldwide in the Last 30 Days - of a magnitude over 4.0
The strongest one - a 7.5 on a Richter scale - was on 25 OCT 2010 at 14:42:22 in SOUTHERN SUMATERA, INDONESIA. Note from Jean: As we can verify above this large 7.5 earthquake is what triggered all the seismographs readings shown in the previous video - the 19:50 time of their update (Pacific time) corresponds to 14:42 in Indonesia. The poor man (that can be heard in the video) was simply not aware yet of this large tsunami-triggering earthquake. Also it is good to know that, according to this Wikipedia entry, there are normally "around 500,000 earthquakes each year. About 100,000 of these can actually be felt." However, they have become much deadlier than usual in 2010 and a tad stronger.

Earthquakes Are Increasing - It's Not Your Imagination (October 30, 2010)
Earthquakes pose a significant risk to 75 million Americans in 39 states.-USGS Jan. 2004 It's not your imagination. More earthquakes than usual have struck in 2010. Because many events clustered together during the first seven months, it furthered magnified the data. If this increased trend maintains through the last two months of 2010, it could further push quake stats.Something unique occurred July 23rd. Three massive earthquakes - 7.3, 7.6 and 7.4 - struck the Philippines in rapid succession, like seismic gunfire. Since then thousands of aftershocks have hit the same area.Quakes don't have to peg the largest magnitude to bring utter destruction. Look at January's Haiti event. That 7.0 event is responsible for this year's massive death toll. "The cost of rebuilding Haiti's homes, schools, roads and other infrastructure could soar to nearly $14 billion." As of Oct. 13, 2,000,000 people were still homeless. More Swarms - Quakes clustered in several places around the U.S. this year - the most recent in Arkansas with more than 100 temblors since last month and more shakes are added daily. Oklahoma also experienced unusually high quake activity this month including a Richter 4.3. Speculation raised the question that these might have been human-caused, but scientists dismissed the theory on Monday. Though the largest event only produced a Richter 4, the area bears watching as it includes the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Another intensive swarm hit southern Calif. in July and it continues today. These events coincide with the current quake series in Mexico. Earlier in the year, yet another swarm clustered at Yellowstone. It managed to chalk up over 1500 shakes before quieting again in February.Outside the country, Christchurch, New Zealand saw a record-breaking (for them) 1445 earthquakes following a 7.1 temblor that struck early last month. Last year a 30,000-strong swarm pummeled Saudi Arabia. To scientists' surprise, these temblors revealed that the area is "unexpectedly volcanically active". Lava is just a mere 2km below surface. Shaking Big, Shaking Early - This is how worldwide earthquakes stack up to date. Not only has a significant amount of quakes occurred, but extraordinary numbers of people have perished in them. Over a quarter million lives have been lost this year when only 10,000 is expected. CLIP

*WORLD ALERT* Over 20 + volcanoes around the world are erupting at the same time! Including Mt. Etna in Italy! They are all ERUPTING AT THE SAME TIME!!! - Emergency and Disaster Information service: - Note from Jean; Again, according to this Wikipedia entry, "Presently there are about 500 active volcanoes in the world – the majority following along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' – and around 50 of these erupt each year." So nothing to worry about, unless you are among the 500 million people who live close to one of the 1500 potentially active volcanoes on Earth.

Three Volcanoes Show Signs of Increased Activity (October 29, 2010)
Jakarta. The Anak Krakatau volcano located along the Sunda Strait produced 117 small eruptions on Thursday. The sound of the eruptions was audible to the Serang district in Banten, which is 40 kilometers away."Anak Krakatau's activities has been escalating since Oct. 27," said Sikin, a staff member at the Anak Krakatau monitoring post in Cinangka, Serang, as quoted by SCTV on Friday. According to Sikin, the volcano's status was increased to "be alert," or two levels before a big eruption, since September. However, the situation is still considered safe for fishermen. "Fishermen must be cautious and try not to get too close to the mountain and maintain a minimum 4-kilometer distance," Sikin said. Increased activity is also building up at the Galunggung volcano in Tasikmalaya, West Java. Heri Supartono, head of the Galunggung monitoring post, said that the volcano had triggered 34 earthquakes this month. CLIP

9-11 - Finding the Truth - Free Download of this Book + VIDEO trailer
What really happened on 9/11? What can the evidence tell us? Who is covering up the evidence, and why are they covering it up? This book attempts to give some answers to these questions and has been written by someone who has become deeply involved in research into what happened on 9/11. A study of the available evidence will challenge you and much of what you assumed to be true. "Now we are discovering that there is a highly-sophisticated black-ops weaponization of free energy technology and it was responsible for the bizarre, low-temperature pulverization of the Twin Towers. Dr. Judy Wood has pieced together the physical evidence and Andrew Johnson has highlighted who is working to silence or smear whom, as the powers that be rush to impede or at least contain the dissemination of these startling findings."

Exopolitics founder: ‘Oct 13 2010 NYC UFO sightings confirm Exopolitics model’ (22 Oct 2010)
According to Mr. Webre, “ A core portion of the October 13, 2010 New York City UFO sightings appear to have been authentically created by intelligent civilizations from star systems elsewhere in our galaxy. When understood in their full context, the Oct 13 UFO sightings confirm the Exopolitics model - that we live in a populated, organized multi-verse, filled with intelligent civilizations, and that our civilization has been functionally quarantined from interaction with other intelligent civilizations.” Former NORAD officer Stanley A. Fulham in his book Challenges of Change originally predicted the Oct 13, 2010 UFO sightings over New York City, as part of predicted sightings over major cities worldwide. Mr. Fulham indicated he had been informed, through inter-dimensional contact, by representatives of a reported self-organized galactic regional governance council that the Oct 13, 2010 sightings were an intentional ‘de-cloaking’ by benign advanced intelligent civilizations who have decided to use their advanced technology to reverse environmental degradation on this planet before humanity self-destructs. About three weeks prior to Oct 13, Mr. Fulham indicates he was informed by the galactic governance council that although the UFO sightings predicted for Oct 13, 2010 were originally to have been over major world cities, the council had decided to scale them back to one City only – New York City as a major world capital in order not to seem threatening or frightening to humans. Mr. Fulham will be a guest of Mr. Webre’s on ExopoliticsTV in an exclusive in-depth interview on Saturday Oct 23, 2010, covering Mr. Fulham’s interactions with the reported galactic governance council, and their future plans in an accompanying article. In his 2010-11 Exopolitics world lecture tour, Mr. Webre will be explaining an evidence-based model of ‘Intelligent Civilizations in the Multi-verse’ that integrates intelligent civilizations existing in the ‘physical’ and hyperdimensional universes with the intelligent civilizations of the soul existing in the ‘soul’ dimensions. Together, the ‘exopolitics’ dimensions of reality and the ‘spiritual’ dimensions of reality comprise the ‘multi-verse’. This empirical Exopolitics model, coincidentally, is very close to a model of the multi-verse described in Mr. Fulham’s book and provided to him by the Transcenders, a group of 43,000 inter-dimensional advanced beings. ET council: 'We will increase UFOs, address U.N. in 2014, renew ecology in 2015' (October 23rd, 2010)
In an exclusive, in-depth interview on Exopolitics Radio with Alfred Lambremont Webre, former NORAD officer Stanley A. Fulham has stated that a regional galactic governance authority, (the ‘Council of 8’) made a dramatic decision in January, 2010 to put aside the law of non-intervention. At a solemn meeting, the Council of 8 decided to intervene with their technology to clean Earth’s atmosphere before an environmental collapse occurs on Earth, as has happened on many other inhabited planets with civilizations similar to our own. The Council of 8 did so, according to Mr. Fulham’s information, after reaching a conclusion that our human technology could not now prevent an environmental collapse and species extinction on Earth from occurring. According to Mr. Fulham, this is a rare decision by the Council of 8, and is partly a result of Council members wishing to preserve the unique positive qualities of our human population. The Council of 8, according to Mr. Fulham’s information, consists of the intelligent civilizations of the Pleiades, Orion, Sirius, Bootes, Alpha Centauri, Comsuli, Zeta Reticuli, and Pouseti. This cleanup of the Earth’s atmosphere will, according to Mr. Fulham’s information, commence in 2015 after a 2014 speech at the United Nations by the Council of 8’s Pleiadian representatives. The Council of 8’s appearance in 2014 at the United Nation’s General Assembly may occur, according to Mr. Fulham’s information, following a collapse of the present world order and the emergence of a new way of living during the period 2010 – 2014. This transitional 2010-14 period may be accompanied by possible earth changes, monetary collapse, and governmental and nation state collapse. Mr. Fulham stated in his Exopolitics Radio interview that the regional galactic governance council (‘Council of 8’) had chosen New York City for an initial Oct 13, 2010 UFO 'decloaking' because it was a global, cosmopolitan city with a blasé population that would not be frightened of their appearance. There are multiple, independent evidentiary sources that prove the Oct. 13, 2010 UFO sightings over New York City were the result of an intervention by a non-Earthly intelligent civilization, and not the result of other causes such as released balloons. The original plan of the Council of 8, taken at a meeting in January 2010, had been for simultaneous UFO appearances on Oct 13, 2010 over major world cities. The purpose of these Council of 8 UFO appearances, which are set to increase in the future, is to acclimatize Earth humans to the Council of 8's presence and decision to intervene. The increased UFO sightings in the future are meant to lead up to a world speech by the Pleiadian representatives of the Council of 8 in the General Assembly hall at the United Nations in 2014. readers can listen to this in-depth historic interview with Stanley A. Fulham in the article below. According to Mr. Fulham, the Council of 8 has had a caretaker role for our planet for about the last million years, and has effectively maintained Earth under protective quarantine following an attempted invasion and takeover of Earth. UFO sightings at ICBM sites and nuclear Weapons Storage Areas By Robert L. Hastings
Although the vast majority of Americans are completely unaware of its existence, the UFO/Nukes Connection is now remarkably well-documented. Air Force, FBI, and CIA files declassified via the Freedom of Information Act establish a convincing, ongoing pattern of UFO activity at U.S. nuclear weapons sites extending back to December 1948. For more than 30 years, I have been interviewing former and retired U.S. Air Force personnel regarding their direct or indirect involvement in nuclear weapons-related UFO sighting incidents. These individuals-from retired colonels to former airmen-report extraordinary encounters which have obvious national security implications. In fact, taken to their logical conclusion, the reported incidents have planetary implications, given the horrific consequences that would result from a full-scale, global nuclear war. At the time of their experiences, my former/retired USAF sources held positions ranging from nuclear missile launch and targeting officers, to missile maintenance personnel, to missile security police. The incidents described occurred at Malmstrom, Minot, F.E. Warren, Ellsworth, Vandenberg, and Walker AFBs, between 1963 and 1996. Other sources were stationed at Wurtsmith and Loring AFBs, where B-52 nuclear bombers were based during the Cold War era. To date, I have interviewed over 50 individuals who were involved in various UFO-related incidents at Strategic Air Command bases or remote sites. I have selected the statements of 20 of those persons for presentation here. An expanded discussion of this material will appear in my forthcoming book, The UFO/Nukes Connection. The testimony below is admittedly anecdotal evidence. Nevertheless, it is offered-often reluctantly-by persons who were entrusted by the U.S. government with the operation or security of weapons of mass destruction. As such, each source was subjected to, and passed, rigorous background checks and personality tests designed to ascertain, with a reasonable degree of certainty, their psychological stability and reliability. For the moment, the international tensions of the Cold War era have receded. Consequently, the U.S. and Russia are currently downsizing their nuclear arsenals. Nevertheless, vast numbers of nukes still exist and may be unleashed at a moment's notice. Therefore, these weapons remain a potential threat to the future of the human race. The events described below leave little doubt that our nuclear weapons program is an ongoing source of interest to someone possessing vastly superior technology. Significantly, the reported UFO activity occasionally transcends mere surveillance and appears to involve direct and unambiguous interference with our strategic weapons systems. Considering these and similar accounts-too numerous and credible to dismiss-I would argue, as others have before me, that the heightened presence of the UFO phenomenon since the end of World War II is a direct consequence of the advent of the Nuclear Age. To suggest that this is the only explanation for widespread UFO sightings during our own era would be presumptuous, simplistic, and undoubtedly inaccurate. Nevertheless, I believe that the nuclear weapons-related incidents are integral to an understanding of the mystery at hand. CLIP

UFOs photographed in Kunming at night (October 21, 2010)
"I photographed saucer-shaped objects. Can you help me determine whether they are real UFOs?" Dong Rong, a resident of China's Kunming, asked Zhang Yifang, honorary chairman of the Kunming UFO Research Association. Dong said that he went out to take photos of the city's night view the other day and later found that there were two saucer-shaped objects in one of the photos. British policeman wins UFO investigation award (21 May 2010)
A British policeman has won an international award for his database of UFO sightings by UK police officers. -- Gary Heseltine's fascination with the unexplained in British skies began at the age of 15, when he spotted a mysterious bright light while walking his first girlfriend home. The 49-year-old father-of-two picked up the 2010 Disclosures Award in Washington for his website,, which he launched in 2002. He said: "Winning the award was a total surprise, I didn't know I was going to win until my name was read out."It's also a terrific boost for my database as it puts me on an international platform and I have already been offered chances to give lectures in Brazil and Denmark."Mr Heseltine, from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, has amassed a database including 330 cases and the witness statements of more than 750 police officers.Despite investigating thousands of reports, He said he will always remember his first sighting over the skies of Scunthorpe in 1975.He said: "I was with my first girlfriend heading towards the comprehensive school and suddenly became aware of a large bright light."Suddenly all the electricity on the housing estate we could see ahead cut out."We were terrified at the time but afterwards I decided to investigate and discovered that power cuts are extremely common during UFO sightings."

ET-UFO Abductee/Contactee On Mufon Etal (10/22/2010)
I am an alien extraterrestrial unidentified flying object experiencer with a background in investigations. I have never told my complete story. I have twists and turns that are forever haunting and engaging. I am an ordinary being with extraordinary experiences or so I am told or referred too in these modern times. (...) The point about these two young MUFON men is that they were very mysterious and shared that MUFON was most interested in an investigation and were compiling information most about NEW YORK sightings and since I once lived there in Rochester, NY was most interested in my sightings there in that location. They listened to my experiences there in HAWAII but did not seem to be interested. They were informative about our chalk drawings of the Aquatic Amphibious types of Aliens my friend and I both drew on the drawing board. She and I were both interested in learning more about the Aquatic Beings that could breathe underwater. They had a human quality as thin and tall with long arm muscles and had an extra set of gills on each side of their neck. The gills were not prominent and could be covered. She and I had seen the lighted USOS on the Kaneohe Bay side and wanted to know if others had any information on these beings so we together decided to place the AD and show it as a class for Ascension Center. Video: Daylight UFO over Addison, Texas (10/19/2010)
A mysterious UFO was captured on video as it flew over Addison, Texas last Friday afternoon. Secret Message TV producer Jon Kelly, the Vancouver UFO Examiner for, was on-site just a few minutes away from the Addison airport when what appeared to be a daylight star came into view. Upon closer observation through a tripod-stabilized camera's magnified optics, the object could be seen flying from north to south at high altitude under powered flight. The UFO maintained both a steady trajectory and consistent speed throughout the 6 minute period during which it was observed. However, while in flight, the object presented a strobing, muticolored light display and radically transforming architectural geometries that defy explanation as conventional aircraft, weather balloons, or known meteorological phenomena. The stabilized and contrast enhanced video is featured in the latest episode of Secret Message TV. - The Addison daylight sighting took place in a window of time concurrent with reports from mainstream news outlets featuring the remarkable events of October 13th, 2010. Galaxy may contain 'many Earth-like planets' (28 Oct 2010)
The galaxy could be filled with many Earth-like planets capable of supporting life, new research suggests. -- A study of nearby stars similar to the Sun shows that almost one in four could have Earth-size planets. They have only not been detected yet because of the technical difficulties involved, scientists believe. Many of these worlds may occupy the fabled ''Goldilocks zone'' - the orbital path where conditions are not too hot or cold but ''just right'' to support liquid surface water, and possibly life. Astronomers in the US came to the conclusion after spending five years studying 166 Sun-like stars within 80 light years of Earth. They found increasing numbers of smaller planets, with the highest proportion being so-called ''super-Earths'' which are the smallest size detectable today. Dr Andrew Howard, from the University of California at Berkeley, said: ''Of about 100 typical Sun-like stars, one or two have planets the size of Jupiter, roughly six have a planet the size of Neptune, and about 12 have super-Earths between three and 10 Earth masses.''If we extrapolate down to Earth-size planets - between one-half and two times the mass of Earth - we predict that you'd find about 23 for every 100 stars.'' Does ET live on Goldilocks planet? How scientists spotted 'mysterious pulse of light' from direction of newly-discovered '2nd Earth' two years ago (1st October 2010)
An astronomer picked up a mysterious pulse of light coming from the direction of the newly discovered Earth-like planet almost two years ago, it has emerged.Dr Ragbir Bhathal, a scientist at the University of Western Sydney, picked up the odd signal in December 2008, long before it was announced that the star Gliese 581 has habitable planets in orbit around it. A member of the Australian chapter of SETI, the organisation that looks for communication from distant planets, Dr Bhathal had been sweeping the skies when he discovered a 'suspicious' signal from an area of the galaxy that holds the newly-discovered Gliese 581g. The remarkable coincidence adds another layer of mystery to the announcement last night that scientists had discovered another planet in the system: Gliese 581g - the most Earth-like planet ever found. Apollo Moon Conversations Show NASA Coverup

(...) 12) Apollo 11: "I say that there were other spaceships!"

Apollo 11, with Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin was the first Apollo flight to land on the Moon, on July 20, 1969. While Collins flew in orbit around the Moon in the command module, Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the lunar module, landing in the Sea of Tranquillity at 4:17 P.M.

According to hitherto un-confirmed reports, both Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin saw UFOs shortly after that historic landing on the Moon in Apollo 11 on 21 July 1969. I remember hearing one of the astronauts refer to a "light" in or on a crater during the television transmission, followed by a request from mission control for further information. Nothing more was heard.

The following astonishing conversation was picked up by ham radio operators that had their own VHF receiving facilities that bypassed NASA's broadcasting outlets. At this time, the live television broadcast was interrupted for two minutes due to a supposed "overheated camera", but the transmission below was received loud and clear by hundreds of ham radio operators:

According to Otto Binder, who was a member of the NASA space team, when the two moon-walkers, Aldrin and Armstrong were making their rounds some distance from the LEM, Armstrong clutched Aldrin's arm excitedly and exclaimed:

Armstrong: What was it? What the hell was it? That's all I want to know!"

Mission Control: What's there?... malfunction (garble) ... Mission Control calling Apollo 11 ...

Apollo 11: These babies were huge, sir!... Enormous!... Oh, God! You wouldn't believe it! ... I'm telling you there are other space-craft out there ... lined up on the far side of the crater edge! ... They're on the Moon watching us! ...

Wilson writes (p. 48): "Binder ends his report with this observation: 'There has, understandably, been no confirmation of this incredible report by NASA or any authorities. WE cannot vouch for its authenticity, but if true, one can surmise that mission control went into a dither and then into a huddle, after which they sternly [ordered] the moonwalkers to 'forget' what they saw and carry on casually and calmly as if nothing had happened. After all, an estimated 600 million people around the world were hanging on every word spoken by the first two men to leave footprints on the Moon."

The book "Celestial Raise" by Richard Watson and ASSK [P.O. Box 35 Mt. Shasta CA. 96067 (916)-926-2316); 1987; page 147-148] records the following (continuation?) of the above remarkable dialogue of Apollo 11, which was picked up by hundreds of ham radio operators in the USA:

"During the transmission of the Moon landing of Armstrong and Aldrin, who journeyed to the Moon in an American spaceship, two minutes of silence occurred in which the image and sound were interrupted. NASA insisted that this problem was the result of one of the television cameras which had overheated, thus interfering with the reception.

This unexpected problem surprised even the most qualified of viewers who were unable to explain how in such a costly project, one of the most essential elements could break down... Some time after the historic Moon landing, Christopher Craft, director of the base in Houston, made some surprising comments when he left NASA.

The contents of these comments, which is included in the conversations [below], has been corroborated by hundreds of amateur radio operators who had connected their stations to the same frequency through which the astronauts transmitted. During the two minute interruption - which was not as it seemed, NASA, Armstrong and Aldrin with Cape Kennedy, censored both image and sound. 'I say that there were other spaceships.'

Here is reproduced completely the dialogue between the American astronauts and Control Center:

Armstrong & Aldrin: Those are giant things. No, no, no - this is not an optical illusion. No one is going to believe this!
Houston (Christopher Craft): What ... what ... what? What the hell is happening? What's wrong with you?
Armstrong & Aldrin: They're here under the surface.
Houston: What's there? (muffled noise) Emission interrupted; interference control calling 'Apollo 11'.
Armstrong & Aldrin: We saw some visitors. They were here for a while, observing the instruments.
Houston: Repeat your last information!
Armstrong & Aldrin: I say that there were other spaceships. They're lined up in the other side of the crater!
Houston: Repeat, repeat!
Armstrong & Aldrin: Let us sound this orbita ... in 625 to 5 ... Automatic relay connected ... My hands are shaking so badly I can't do anything. Film it? God, if these damned cameras have picked up anything - what then?
Houston: Have you picked up anything?
Armstrong & Aldrin: I didn't have any film at hand. Three shots of the saucers or whatever they were that were ruining the film
Houston: Control, control here. Are you on your way? What is the uproar with the UFOs over?
Armstrong & Aldrin: They've landed here. There they are and they're watching us.
Houston: The mirrors, the mirrors - have you set them up?
Armstrong & Aldrin: Yes, they're in the right place. But whoever made those spaceships surely can come tomorrow and remove them. Over and out.

A certain professor, who wished to remain anonymous, was engaged in a discussion with Neil Armstrong during a NASA symposium.

Professor: What REALLY happened out there with Apollo 11?
Armstrong: It was incredible, of course we had always known there was a possibility - the fact is, we were warned off! There was never any question then of a space station or a moon city.
Professor: How do you mean "warned off"?
Armstrong: I can't go into details, except to say that their ships were far superior to ours both in size and technology - Boy, were they big!...and menacing! No, there is no question of a space station.
Professor: But NASA had other missions after Apollo 11?
Armstrong: Naturally - NASA was committed at that time, and couldn't risk panic on Earth. But it really was a quick scoop and back again.

According to a Dr. Vladimir Azhazha:

"Neil Armstrong relayed the message to Mission Control that two large, mysterious objects were watching them after having landed near the Moon module (LEM). But this message was never heard by the public - because NASA censored it."

According to a Dr. Aleksandr Kasantsev, Buzz Aldrin took color movie film of the UFOs from inside the module, and continued filming them after he and Armstrong went outside.

Armstrong confirmed that the story was true but refused to go into further detail, beyond admitting that the CIA was behind the cover-up."

GOP seizes control of House, as economy drives party gains (November 3, 2010)
Just four years after surrendering power, Republicans recaptured control of the House and made gains in the Senate on Tuesday night, in a major rebuff of President Obama and the Democrats by an electorate worried about the economy and the size of the government. But in the most closely watched race of the year, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid defeated Sharron Angle, the tea party Republican who carried the hopes of conservatives across the country to beat the Senate's most powerful Democrat. In Washington, Republicans staged a jubilant victory party. "Across the country right now, we are witnessing a repudiation of Washington, a repudiation of big government and a repudiation of politicians who refuse to listen to the people," said an emotional Rep. John A. Boehner (Ohio), who is now poised to become the next House speaker. Obama called Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) once it was clear that the House had fallen to the GOP. The president said he looked forward to working with Republicans "to find common ground, move the country forward and get things done for the American people," according to the White House. Boehner, according to aides, said he will deal with the president in a "straightforward and honest" way. CLIP - More related news through this LINK

US Elections 2010: America votes (2 November 2010)
Voters are going to the polls in the US mid-term elections, with President Barack Obama's Democratic Party braced for a string of defeats. Democrats may hold on to the Senate, but are expected to lose their majority in the House of Representatives, as Republicans hope to capitalise on voter discontent with the economy. (...) The Republican Party needs to gain 39 seats to win control of the House and 10 to take over the Senate. In addition, voters are deciding on some 160 measures on the ballots in 37 states ranging from marijuana legalisation in California to a referendum in Oklahoma on forbidding judges from using Islamic Sharia law in rulings. If Californians decide in favour of legalising marijuana possession for personal use, it will put their state at odds with federal law. (...) Frank Newport, editor-in-chief of the Gallup market research firm, said the polls suggested that Republicans would do well. "The real defining variable this year is that Republicans are enthusiastic, they are motivated, they are emotional about the election and Democrats aren't - and turnout makes a big difference, and that's why it looks like the Republicans will do well," he told the BBC. Mr Newport said Mr Obama had inspired Americans who did not normally vote to turn out in 2008, but that the same groups did not seem likely to vote in the mid-terms. However, citing the examples of Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, Mr Newport added that it would be a mistake to assume a poor showing in the mid-terms would mean a defeat for Mr Obama at the next presidential election. "History tells us this has very little predictive value about whether or not Barack Obama will be able to be re-elected in 2012," he said.

Jon Stewart on the Hustings (October 29, 2010) A SLEW OF OPINIONS ON JON AND BARACK
“Just who does Jon Stewart think he is?” It’s a question posed by, among others, The Washington Post’s Paul Farhi, who answers it thus: “These days, he can claim to be many things: political satirist, pseudo-anchorman, media critic, author, successful businessman, philanthropist, Emmy Award magnet. On Monday he arrives in Washington in a new, self-anointed role: as our national voice of reason, moderation and rationality — a uniter, you might say, not a divider.” Stewart certainly seems to have united many of his biggest fans in the mainstream media and liberal political circles — in objection, that is, to Saturday’s “Rally to Restore Sanity.” CLIP

US to build £8bn super base on Pacific island of Guam (25 Oct 2010)
The US is building an £8 billion super military base on the Pacific island of Guam in an attempt to contain China's military build-up. -- The expansion will include a dock for a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, a missile defence system, live-fire training sites and the expansion of the island's airbase. It will be the largest investment in a military base in the western Pacific since the Second World War, and the biggest spend on naval infrastructure in decades. However, Guam residents fear the build-up could hurt their ecosystem and tourism-dependent economy. Estimates suggest that the island's population will rise by almost 50 per cent from its current 173,000 at the peak of construction. It will eventually house 19,000 Marines who will be relocated from the Japanese island of Okinawa, where the US force has become unpopular. The US's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said that this could trigger serious water shortages. The EPA said that dredging the harbour to allow an aircraft carrier to berth would damage 71 acres of pristine coral reefs. The EPA's report said the build-up would "exacerbate existing substandard environmental conditions on Guam". Local residents' concerns, however, have been sidelined by the US-China strategic competition. China has significantly expanded its fleet during the past decade, seeking to deter the US from intervening militarily in any future conflict over Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own, and to project power across disputed territories in the gas and oil-rich South China Sea. Beijing's naval build-up is also intended secure the sea lanes from the Middle East, from where China will import an estimated 70-80 per cent of its oil needs by 2035 supplies it fears US could choke in the event of a conflict.China has therefore invested in what are called its "string of pearls" a network of bases strung along the Indian Ocean rim, like Hambantota in Sri Lanka and Gwadar in Pakistan and in developing a navy which can operate far from home.Experts agree China does not currently have the capability to challenge US supremacy in the Pacific and Indian Ocean. "China has a large appetite", says Carl Ungerer, an analyst at Australian Strategic Policy Institute, "but it hasn't got enough teeth". But China clearly intends to add bite to its naval arsenal. The country has acquired several modern Russian-made submarines and destroyers. Its shipyards are building new nuclear-powered submarines, as well as an aircraft carrier. There have also been reports that China is planning to test a new type of ballistic missile, the Dong Feng 21D, which would effectively render US carriers defenceless. CLIP

Chinese Supercomputer Likely to Prompt Unease in U.S. (OCTOBER 28, 2010)
A newly built supercomputer in China appears poised to take the world performance lead, another sign of the country's growing technological prowess that is likely to set off alarms about U.S. competitiveness and national security. The system was designed by China's National University of Defense Technology and is housed at the National Supercomputing Center in the city of Tianjin. It is part of a new breed that exploits graphics chips more commonly used in playing videogames-supplied by Nvidia Corp.-as well as standard microprocessors from Intel Corp. (...) But Nvidia says the new system in Tianjin-which is being formally announced Thursday at an event in China-was able to reach 2.5 petaflops. That is a measure of calculating speed ordinarily translated into a thousand trillion operations per second. It is more than 40% higher than the mark set last June by a system called Jaguar at Oak Ridge National Laboratory that previously stood at No. 1 on a twice-yearly ranking of the 500 fastest supercomputers. "I don't know of another system that is going to be anywhere near the performance and the power of this machine" in China, said Jack Dongarra, a supercomputer expert on the Oak Ridge research staff who is a professor at the University of Tennessee and recently inspected the system in Tianjin last week. "It is quite impressive." CLIP

Government Seeks Back Door Into All Our Communications (SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2010)
The New York Times reported this morning on a Federal government plan to put government-mandated back doors in all communications systems, including all encryption software. The Times said the Obama administration is drafting a law that would impose a new "mandate" that all communications services be "able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages" — including ordering "[d]evelopers of software that enables peer-to-peer communication [to] redesign their service to allow interception". Throughout the 1990s, EFF and others fought the "crypto wars" to ensure that the public would have the right to strong encryption tools that protect our privacy and security — with no back doors and no intentional weaknesses. We fought in court and in Congress to protect privacy rights and challenge restrictions on encryption, and to make sure the public could use encryption to protect itself.
(...) In the past ten years, even as the U.S. government has sought (or simply taken) vastly expanded surveillance powers, it never attempted to ban the development and use of secure encryption. Now the government is again proposing to do so, following in the footsteps of regimes like the United Arab Emirates that have recently said some privacy tools are too secure and must be kept out of civilian hands. As the Internet security community explained years ago, intentionally weakening security and including back doors is a recipe for disaster. "Lawful intercept" systems built under current laws have already been abused for unlawful spying by governments and criminals. Trying to force technology developers to include back doors is a recipe for disaster for our already-fragile on-line security and privacy. And like the COICA Internet censorship bill, it takes a page from the world's most repressive regimes' Internet-control playbook. This is exactly the wrong message for the U.S. government to be sending to the rest of the world. The crypto wars are back in full force, and it's time for everyone who cares about privacy to stand up and defend it: no back doors and no bans on the tools that protect our communications.

One EMP burst and the world goes dark (October 27, 2010)
The sky erupts. Cities darken, food spoils and homes fall silent. Civilization collapses. End-of-the-world novel? A video game? Or could such a scenario loom in America's future? There is talk of catastrophe ahead, depending on whom you believe, because of the threat of an electromagnetic pulse triggered by either a supersized solar storm or terrorist A-bomb, both capable of disabling the electric grid that powers modern life. Electromagnetic pulses (EMP) are oversized outbursts of atmospheric electricity. Whether powered by geomagnetic storms or by nuclear blasts, their resultant intense magnetic fields can induce ground currents strong enough to burn out power lines and electrical equipment across state lines. The threat has even become political fodder, drawing warnings from former House speaker Newt Gingrich, a likely presidential contender."We are not today hardened against this," he told a Heritage Foundation audience last year. "It is an enormous catastrophic threat." Meanwhile, in Congress, a "Grid Act" bill aimed at the threat awaits Senate action, having passed in the House of Representatives. Fear is evident. With the sun's 11-year solar cycle ramping up for its stormy maximum in 2012, and nuclear concerns swirling about Iran and North Korea, a drumbeat of reports and blue-ribbon panels center on electromagnetic pulse scenarios. The BBC bunker they don't want you to know about (31 October 2010)
Who knew that, 10 storeys beneath a Worcestershire hill, the corporation is ready for Armageddon? (...) Measuring 175ft long, the bunker - known to high command as Pawn: Protected Area Wood Norton - remains ready for service in the event of an attack on London. It is said to have beds and ping-pong tables and is connected by tunnels dug into the hillside to a mast on top of the hill which is fitted with a super high-frequency satellite dish. According to the Government War Book, a Cold War document that was declassified only last year and which sets out what happens in the event of a nuclear strike, Wood Norton was a vital tool in keeping the country informed should chaos descend. While the Cabinet would be secreted away in another bunker in Corsham, Wiltshire, pre-recorded tapes kept at Wood Norton would be broadcast across the nation in the minutes before any bomb was dropped. It's a chilling scenario, one that has thankfully been relegated to a distant memory. The question is why now, 20 years on from the end of the Cold War, do we still have it? CLIP

Finding the 'Cure' for the 'Cyber Epidemic' (October 31, 2010)
As the "War on Terror" morphs into a multiyear, multitrillion dollar blood-soaked adventure to secure advantage over imperialism's geopolitical rivals (and steal other people's resources in the process), hitting the corporate "sweet spot," now as during the golden days of the Cold War, is as American as a preemptive war and the "pack of lies" that launch them.Always inventive when it comes to ginning-up a profitable panic, U.S. defense and security grifters have rolled-out a product line guaranteed to scare the bejesus out of everyone: a "cyber epidemic"!This one has it all: hordes of crazed "communist" Chinese hackers poised to bring down the power grid; swarthy armies of al-Qaeda fanatics who "hate us for our freedom;" "trusted insiders" who do us harm by leaking "sensitive information," i.e. bringing evidence of war crimes and corporate malfeasance to light by spilling the beans to secrecy-shredding web sites like WikiLeaks, Public Intelligence and Cryptome. And to combat this latest threat to public order, the Pentagon's geek squad, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have launched several new initiatives.
(...) In 2009, the STRATCOM commander informed us that "the White House retains the option to respond with physical force--potentially even using nuclear weapons--if a foreign entity conducts a disabling cyber attack against U.S. computer networks." That would certainly up the ante a notch or two! Chilton said, "I think you don't take any response options off the table from an attack on the United States of America," Global Security Newswire reported. "Why would we constrain ourselves on how we respond?" Judging by the way the U.S. imperial war machine conducts itself in Iraq and Afghanistan, there's no reason that the general's bellicose rhetoric shouldn't be taken seriously. "I think that's been our policy on any attack on the United States of America," Chilton said. "And I don't see any reason to treat cyber any differently. I mean, why would we tie the president's hands? I can't. It's up to the president to decide." Even short of nuclear war a full-on cyber attack on an adversary's infrastructure could have unintended consequences that would boomerang on anyone foolish enough to unleash military-grade computer worms and viruses. All the more reason then to classify everything and move towards transforming the internet and electronic communications in general into a "warfighting domain" lorded-over by the Pentagon and America's alphabet-soup intelligence agencies. As The Washington Post reported on September 29, the secret state announced that "it had spent $80.1 billion on intelligence activities over the past 12 months." According to the Post, the "National Intelligence Program, run by the CIA and other agencies that report to the Director of National Intelligence, cost $53.1 billion in fiscal 2010, which ended Sept. 30, while the Military Intelligence Program cost an additional $27 billion." By comparison, the total spent by America's shadow warriors exceeds Russia's entire military budget. Despite releasing the budget figures, the Office of Director and National Intelligence and Defense Department officials refused to disclose any program details. What percentage goes towards National Security Agency "black" programs, including those illegally targeting the communications of the American people are, like torture and assassination operations, closely guarded state secrets. And with calls for more cash to "inoculate" the American body politic against a looming "cyber epidemic," the right to privacy, civil liberties and dissent, are soon destined to be little more than quaint relics of our former republic. Massive stretches of weathered oil spotted in Gulf of Mexico (October 23, 2010)
Just three days after the U.S. Coast Guard admiral in charge of the BP oil spill cleanup declared little recoverable surface oil remained in the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana fishers Friday found miles-long strings of weathered oil floating toward fragile marshes on the Mississippi River delta. The discovery, which comes as millions of birds begin moving toward the region in the fall migration, gave ammunition to groups that have insisted the government has overstated clean-up progress, and could force reclosure of key fishing areas only recently reopened.
(...) Just Tuesday, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Paul Zukunft, in charge of the federal response, and his top science adviser, Steve Lehmann, said that little of the 210 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf remained on the surface or even on the Gulf's floor. Lehmann pointed to extensive tests conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that included taking samples of water from various depths, as well as collections of bottom sediments both far offshore and close to the coast. Those claims, announced on the six-month anniversary of the spill, brought quick rebuttals from a variety of environmental and fishermen's groups who insist their members have been reporting sightings of surface oil all along. LSU environmental sciences professor Ed Overton, who has been involved in oil spill response for 30 years, said he believes both claims could be accurate. The Louisiana sweet crude from the Deepwater Horizon is very light and has almost neutral buoyancy, Overton said, which means that when it picks up any particles from the water column, it will sink to the bottom. "It's quite possible that when the weather calms and the water temperatures changes, the oil particles that have spread along the bottom will recoagulate, then float to the surface again and form these large mats.
(...) "If this was tar balls floating around, that would be one thing, but these reports are of mats of weathered oil, and that can cause serious problems if it gets into the marsh," he said. The reports are a great concern to wildlife officials. The Mississippi delta is a primary wintering ground for hundreds of thousands of ducks and geese, some of which already have begun arriving. The West Bay area leads into several shallower interior bays that attract ducks, geese and myriad species of shore and wading birds each winter. Earlier this month state wildlife officials were expressing optimism the spill would have minimal impact on most waterfowl visitors because little oil had penetrated the sensitive wintering grounds.

Censored Gulf news: Vomiting foamy blood (video) (October 26th, 2010)
An oil "clean-up worker" described to a reporter his vomiting foamy matter with brown colored matter in it that he later learned was probably blood. The Gulf operation involves the greatest crime against humanity and environment plus the greatest government cover-up in history, an atrocity supported by and covered-up by President Barack Obama, as documented in Crude Awakening by Journeyman Pictures, a London based film group. First the worker, Donny Matsler noticed his eyes burning and then his throat burned "like it never has burned before." He had come in contact with the dispersant, Corexit sprayed from planes, ships and then further inland, into backyards, from skiffs. Matsler then vomited for about three hours he says. Then he suffered the Blue Plague lesions being reported by an increasing number people throughout the Gulf region."I did not know the seriousness of that," he said. The account is among the unprecedented pollution and illness cataloged and documented in Journeyman Pictures' short film on a Youtube video Crude Awakening - USA.Cramping, nausea, teeth and jaws disintegrating, brain fog are only some of the symptoms Dr. Riki Ott is seeing in people of the Gulf. As bug spreads, Ugandans watch their flesh rot away (October 24, 2010)
A disease with progression and symptoms that seem straight out of a horror movie has killed at least 20 Ugandans and sickened more than 20,000 in just two months.Read more: As bug spreads, Ugandans watch their flesh rot away. Jiggers, small insects that look like fleas, are the culprits in the epidemic, which causes parts of the body to rot. They often enter through the feet. Once inside a human, they suck blood and multiply by the hundreds. Affected body parts -- buttocks, lips, even eyelids -- rot away. James Kakooza, Uganda's minister of state for primary health care, said jiggers can easily kill young children and cause early deaths in grown-ups with other diseases. The parasitic disease, named tungiasis, also exists in parts of Latin America and the Caribbean. (...) The disease can be treated by removing the insect or with topical medication. Uganda's government has allocated $1 million to fight the epidemic.

Patients' anger after they are unable to opt out of swine flu vaccine despite fears of side effects (25th October 2010)
Patients' groups have expressed anger over this year's seasonal flu jab programme because people are unable to opt out of having the swine flu vaccine. The H1N1 vaccine will be the dominant of three flu strains included in the shot, meaning millions of elderly and vulnerable patients will get it automatically. Yet many people refused to have the swine flu vaccine when it was offered last year because of fears it may cause serious side effects. The Mail on Sunday revealed last week that Government experts are examining a possible association between the H1N1 swine flu jab and the paralysing nerve disease Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The vaccine has also been linked to fevers in young children, temporary paralysis and narcolepsy. Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, said: 'We are very disappointed that patients are not being given the opportunity to choose for themselves whether they wish to take the swine flu vaccine as part of their winter flu vaccine. 'Some may not want the swine flu vaccine and this may mean they would also miss out on their winter flu jab. This seems to go completely against the new initiative from the Government which states that in the NHS there will be "No decision about me without me" for patients and that there will be a large emphasis on patient choice. There does not seem to be any patient choice involved here - either patients have both vaccines or no vaccine.' Each year the World Health Organisation considers which strains of flu will be dominant in winter. (...) There really should be a choice.' The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency received nearly 8,600 suspected adverse reactions to the swine flu jab during the pandemic last winter (AND THAT'S ONLY IN THE UK!) . Most involved pain or swelling at the site of the jab, vomiting and headaches. The MHRA also received 15 reports of patients developing Guillain-Barre Syndrome. It is not known if the cases are linked to the vaccine, although a swine flu jab in the US in 1976 led to 25 deaths from the condition. CLIP

Rawesome Foods raw milk co-op raid conducted by criminal elements of local, state and federal law enforcement (October 22, 2010)
On June 30, 2010, a group of armed government agents from local, state, federal and even the Canadian government illegally trespassed on private property and raided Rawesome Foods, a private food buying club in Venice, California. With guns drawn, these agents tore through the property stealing computers, raw dairy products and honey, all while holding some of the volunteer workers hostage for several hours. When the agents finally left, they took with them thousands of dollars in private property as well as the surveillance footage of their armed rampage.Sounds like a scene out of a horror movie, right? Except this actually happened, though unless you're tuned in to the health freedom movement, you've probably heard nothing about it. Most of the mainstream media outlets would never touch a story like this because it exposes just how tyrannical and out of control our government has become on issues like raw milk and food freedom.
(...) In California, clubs like Rawesome are perfectly legal -- they're basically nothing more than a group of private individuals who collectively share products from the animals and farms in which they own shares. There's nothing criminal or illegal about it; it's what individuals are free to do in the United States of America (although in some other states, cow and goat sharing has been outlawed, if you can believe that). But in Rawesome's case, the Feds ignored the fact that the club was operating legally and lawfully, and decided to raid the club on false grounds, apparently for intimidation purposes. The whole idea appears to be to send a message to other raw food operations that if they try to sell raw milk, they will be raided at gunpoint too!
(...) According to the warrant that James, the operator of Rawesome, received from the agents, the supposed felony charges for which the raid was conducted were not felony charges at all. Every charge visible on the warrant was a misdemeanor. Even worse, the warrant only permitted the agents to take "vial" samples of Rawesome products. But instead, the agents decided to just take everything they possibly could."They came in and stole ... 17 coolers worth of product, when on their search warrant it authorized the taking of vials of samples, which of course would have fit under your underarm in a soft-sided cooler. So ... why were they armed with 17 coolers when that was a violation of their own protocols on their search warrant?" The agents not only confiscated thousands of dollars worth of food products, but they tagged most of the other food as "evidence" and ordered Rawesome workers not to "sell" any more of it to members. From about 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., the agents remained on Rawesome's premises until they finally decided to leave. CLIP

A total ban on primary forest logging needed to save the world, an interview with activist Glen Barry (June 02, 2010)
Glen Barry, head of Ecological Internet, takes on the FSC and NGOs that support it, while warning that the world is headed toward ecological collapse if global society continues business-as-usual track. (...) Ecological Internet recommends not a moratorium, which is temporary, but a global ban on industrial logging in old-growth or primary forests, both in temperate and tropical regions. Barry argues that such a ban is absolutely necessary if our planet is not to suffer tremendous environmental upheaval. "There is every reason to believe, and this can't be proved definitively because we only have one planet to do experiments on (and we're doing them)," he explains, "but I very strongly believe that we have surpassed the amount of impact on terrestrial ecosystems and primary forests in particular that is possible and still maintain the biosphere and a habitable planet." Barry says that 'revolutionary change' is needed to avoid ecological collapse, which according to Barry is not some distant specter, but waits on the horizon. "It's very likely that the global ecological system is going to collapse. It's not even very likely: it's certain," he says. "If we cross thresholds, including the loss of intact terrestrial ecosystems which include primary rainforest and other forests, we are going to face an ecological collapse where there is going to be large-scale death and suffering, if not the failure of the global ecological system to maintain conditions in a range that's favorable to life including humans." But it's one thing to point to the problem, however awful, but another altogether to point to the solution: just what kind of change does Barry think we need in order to stave off 'large-scale death and suffering'? "There is going to have to be a number of changes: we're going to have to in the over-developed world consume less, way less; we're going to have to become way more efficient; we're going to have to debunk the meaning of life being consumption; and find meaning in other things like community, ecology, hard work, and friends, within living sustainably and within ecology. But then there's a lot of the world that is actually going to need more consumption just to meet their basic human needs," Barry explains. Barry criticizes larger environmental groups for not doing enough given the direness of the situation as he sees it. "The efforts of the environmental community in regard to this threat are orders of magnitude insufficient," he says." There's been a whole industry built up around environmental concerns, but an amazing amount of it is toward, you know, sustainable logging or loving the panda." CLIP

Bisphenol A is everywhere - is it safe? (25 October 2010)
Mounting evidence against a chemical we are exposed to daily is being ignored. What more do regulators need, ask David Melzer and Tamara Galloway - THREE letters lie at the heart of our modern world: BPA. Short for bisphenol A, a synthetic oestrogen, a staggering 3 billion kilograms of the stuff is produced annually, with an estimated value of $500,000 per hour to the global economy.BPA is used in the production of a hard and transparent form of polycarbonate plastic used to create food and drink containers and other consumer goods. It is also used in the epoxy resins that line metal food cans, and as an ingredient in dental sealants. In fact, we are so consistently exposed to BPA that over 90 per cent of us excrete BPA metabolites in our urine at any given time. How exactly BPA enters the human body is not yet clear, although eating food kept in BPA-containing packaging, breathing household dust and handling plastics that contain BPA may all contribute to our daily exposure. Currently, BPA is not listed on food or drink labels so millions of people have no way of knowing their daily exposure.
(...) Current recommendations by the EFSA and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have remained unchanged for several years, with the TDI set at 50 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight per day. This equates to a "safe" dose for an average person weighing 70 kilograms of 3.5 milligrams of BPA per day. For comparison, the daily contraceptive pill contains around 50 micrograms of oestrogen, though the synthetic oestrogens in most modern pills are much more potent than BPA. CLIP

A warming world could leave cities flattened (15 October 2010)
EARTH is starting to crumble under the strain of climate change. Over the last decade, rock avalanches and landslides have become more common in high mountain ranges, apparently coinciding with the increase in exceptionally warm periods (see "Early signs"). The collapses are triggered by melting glaciers and permafrost, which remove the glue that holds steep mountain slopes together. Worse may be to come. Thinning glaciers on volcanoes could destabilise vast chunks of their summit cones, triggering mega-landslides capable of flattening cities such as Seattle and devastating local infrastructure. For Earth this phenomenon is nothing new, but the last time it happened, few humans were around to witness it. Several studies have shown that around 10,000 years ago, as the planet came out of the last ice age, vast portions of volcanic summit cones collapsed, leading to enormous landslides. (...) The first volcanoes to go will most likely be in the Andes, where temperatures are rising fastest as a result of global warming. Any movement here could be an early sign of trouble to come elsewhere. David Pyle, a volcanologist at the University of Oxford, agrees. "This is a real risk and a particularly serious hazard along the Andes," he says.Meanwhile, ongoing studies by Bill McGuire of University College London and Rachel Lowe at the University of Exeter, UK, are showing that non-glaciated volcanoes could also be at greater risk of catastrophic collapse if climate change increases rainfall."We have found that 39 cities with populations greater than 100,000 are situated within 100 kilometres of a volcano that has collapsed in the past and which may, therefore, be capable of collapsing in the future," says McGuire. The Ten Biggest American Cities That Are Running Out Of Water (November 1, 2010)
Some parts of the United States have begun to run low on water. That is probably not much of a surprise to people who live in the arid parts of America that have had water shortages for decades or even centuries. No one who has been to the Badlands in South Dakota would expect to be able to grow crops there. The water problem is worse than most people realize, particularly in several large cities which are occasionally low on water now and almost certainly face shortfalls in a few years. This is particularly true if the change in global weather patterns substantially alters rainfall amounts in some areas of the US. (...) Severe droughts that could affect large cities are first a human problem. The competition for water could make life in some of America's largest cities nearly unbearable for residents. A number of industries rely on regular access to water. Some people would be out of work if these industries had poor prospects for continued operation. (...) The ten cities on this list are the ones with the most acute exposure to problems that could cause large imbalances of water supply and demand. There are a number of metropolitan areas that could face similar problems but their risks are not quite as high. World's Most Precise Clocks Could Reveal Universe Is a Hologram (October 28, 2010)
Our existence could be coded in a finite bandwidth, like a live ultra-high-definition 3-D video. And the third dimension we know and love could be no more than a holographic projection of a 2-D surface. A scientist's $1 million experiment, now under construction in Illinois, will attempt to test these ideas by the end of next year using what will be two of the world's most precise clocks. Skeptics of a positive result abound, but their caution comes with good reason: The smallest pieces of space, time, mass and other properties of the universe, called Planck units, are so tiny that verifying them by experiment may be impossible. The Planck unit of length, for example, is 10 billion billion times smaller than the width of a proton. Craig Hogan, a particle astrophysicist at Fermilab in Illinois, isn't letting this seemingly insurmountable barrier stop him from trying. Hogan is following through on a radical idea to confirm Planck units with two of the most precise clocks in the world. Deemed holometers, each L-shaped laser interferometer will have two perpendicular, 131-foot-long arms to scan for pixelation in the very fabric of space and time. If it's there, two laser beams (split from a single source) that run through the arms won't hit a detector at the same time. (...) "If anything happens, he'll put to rest another exotic theory about the universe."If he does find a limit to the universe's resolution by exploiting the cosmos' possible holographic underpinnings, however, Grote said it will make waves."It would be a very strong impact to one of the most open questions in fundamental physics," he said. "It would be the first proof that space-time, the fabric of the universe, is quantized."

Microwave Radiation Dangers in your Home - Safe Fiber Optics in Swiss Schools (October 21, 2010)
While the rest of the world rushes onwards with the wireless revolution, Switzerland and the country’s largest telecom provider – SWISSCOM – have decided to light up the public school’s wired networks using fiber optics FOR FREE! But there is one catch – the schools must use LAN – local area networks. NO WiFi allowed. And this offer even includes pre-schoolers! Click here to read more about Swisscom’s offer (which is in French and the only stated reason why they switch to optic fiber is the much higher transfer capacity - 50 megs per second instead of 6 for the Wifi). We produced a short video that I hope will provide some insight as to why the Swiss government and Swisscom are so forward thinking in matters related to children’s health and education. After you watch the video – explore the links to the Swiss Office of Public Health website. No need to read between the lines, just pay attention to the bold text. Wireless Internet making schoolchildren sick, father tells MPs (OCTOBER 29, 2010)
OTTAWA — A worried parent accused Health Canada of lying about the safety of wireless Internet in schools Thursday and made an impassioned plea for help to a committee of MPs. Rodney Palmer, a father of two from Collingwood, Ont., told the House of Commons health committee that children attending at least 14 schools in the Simcoe region north of Toronto have been falling ill at school since wireless Internet was installed throughout the school board. Parents have been reporting that their children experience symptoms only when at school, including headaches, dizziness, nausea, memory loss and increased heart rates. According to Palmer, the school board and local public health unit have refused requests to investigate whether wireless Internet is to blame, as the parents suspect, because they say Health Canada assures everyone that the levels of exposure to electromagnetism are safe. "They're lying when they say it is safe," Palmer told reporters after the meeting. "They know there is evidence that shows that it is unsafe and they're taking this risk with children all across Canada."
(...) Palmer contends that children are being experimented upon right now with the widespread use of wireless technology in schools where children are exposed to it in contained spaces, for hours at a time, day after day. "The reality is we're allowing an experiment to be conducted at our schools every day and nobody's taking notes," he told the committee. "Nobody's keeping track and so far nobody cares."He pleaded with them to the Safe School Committee, a group formed by concerned parents, investigate what's happening at the schools. "This is real, and it's happening, and it isn't going away because on paper we pretend it's all safe", said Palmer. Health Canada has been urged by advocates to apply what's known as the precautionary principle to ban wireless Internet in schools. The principle is an approach used in policymaking and, as Pietersen explained to the committee, it can be applied when there are "possible but unproven" adverse health effects related to something. But Pietersen said there's no reason to use it when it comes to wireless. "In the case of the electromagnetic fields, Health Canada's position is there is sufficient evidence to show that adherence to Safety Code 6 will not cause harm to human health and that's why we do not advocate the precautionary principle in this situation." The health committee will be writing a report on the issue that could include a set of recommendations. (...)

Note from Jean: If you will please take a couple minutes to read the following alarming news - which shows that despite pledges made by politicians in 2002 to halt biodiversity loss by 2010, we are still losing irreplaceable, most precious species at a rate that is at least 1000 times faster than the normal natural rate - you will certainly concur with me that there are no words strong enough to express how unconscionably short-sighted and irretrievably stupid it is to allow such a solely man-made unraveling of the Web of Life to continue. We have barely 10 years left to inverse this trend, after which a point of no return will have been crossed. Think about it for a minute and open your heart please to the sheer significance of the consequences of losing forever the result of hundreds of millions of years of Life's labor of Love and ingenious creativity that has given us one of the MOST precious and unique jewel of Life in this galaxy. You will find below rational arguments that demonstrate the considerable costs to our economies to replace the service provided for free by Nature, as well as the usual reminder of the cornucopia of exotic life-saving molecules that disappear everyday even before we have had a chance to study the species that harbor them. But to me that is all beyond the point. Nature MUST be preserved for its own sake... and simply because we ARE Nature. We are intimately connected with every strand in the Web of Life, emerging from the fertile crucible of Nature's earthly womb, breathing its life-sustaining air, drinking and eating from its endlessly diverse ambrosia to remain alive, and vibrating with the very same Life Force that pulses in every cell alive on this wondrously alive planet. We cannot, we MUST NOT remain complacently indifferent to the urgent plight of this treasure trove of biodiversity, for doing so - AS MOST OF US DO DAY IN DAY OUT - will inevitably spell our own demise and the abrupt end of a Journey that started almost 4 billions years ago when the first bacterial life form started pulsing as a result of Nature's innate intelligent design. And please don't simply think "Oh! Even if humanity is to vanish along with most life forms from the face of this planet, life is resilient and will start all over again and eventually after countless ages of relentless evolution, a renewed lush biotope will enliven again this world with its amazing grace." Go sit in front of any flower, at the foot of any tree, or look at some picture showing one of the many vistas of grandiose magnificence available for those with eyes to see and a heart and a soul awakened enough to grasp the ineffable beauty and immanent Presence all of this stands for and tell me it does not matter to you if we eventually lose all of this... Killing Nature as we do right now through the endlessly devouring rapacity of our consumeurist culture abetted by the bottomless greed of a capitalistic corporate system devoid of any shred of conscience is akin to killing a defenseless, innocent baby with our own bare hands - metaphorically speaking. Time is Up! Complacency is Out! Action is needed Now! Be the Change you Want to See in the World and, for God's sake, let your voice be heard loud and clear by the policy-makers of this world so they may see the Light of Reason and feel the Inner Call of their soul so as to finally stop bickering endlessly and shift their priorities towards cocreating with us all a truly sustainable civilization and a bright future for all Life on Earth. NOW!

PS. I wrote this above 4 days before the end of the Nagoya Biodiversity Summit. As you'll see in Goodwill and compromise: Nagoya biodiversity deal restores faith in UN (after the next 2 articles below), it appears my fervent plea has been heard - somehow... - as a near miracle has occurred there in the very last hours of this crucial Biodiversity Convention meeting.

More species slide to extinction

By Richard Black, Environment correspondent, BBC News -- 26 October 2010

The proportion of plant and animal species known to be close to extinction is rising - but conservation efforts are pulling some back from the brink.

Those are the central conclusions from scientists who have compiled this year's Red List of Threatened Species.

Launched at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) meeting, it puts 20% of species on the danger list.

But without intensive conservation work on some, the overall picture would be worse, scientists say.

Amphibians remain the most threatened category of animals, with 41% of species at risk, while only 13% of birds qualify for Red-Listing.

The highest losses were seen in Southeast Asia, where loss of habitat as forests are cleared for agriculture, including biofuel crops, is fastest.

"The 'backbone' of biodiversity is being eroded," said the eminent ecologist, Professor Edward O Wilson of Harvard University.

"One small step up the Red List is one giant leap forward towards extinction. This is just a small window on the global losses currently taking place."

However, the scientists behind the assessment - who publish their findings formally in the journal Science - say there is new evidence this time that conservation projects are having a noticeable global impact.

"Really focused conservation efforts work when we do them - many island birds are recovering, lots of examples like this," said Simon Stuart, chair of the Species Survival Commission with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)."We can show for sure that when we focus conservation efforts and really address the threats and put enough money into it, then you see positive results."

Species that have benefited from such action include three bred in captivity and returned to the wild - the California condor and black-footed ferret of the US, and Przewalski's horse in Mongolia.

The ban on commercial whaling has led to such a swiftly increasing population of humpback whales that they have come off the Red List entirely.

Meanwhile, a parallel study, also published in Science, asks where trends of increased risk, but also increased conservation effort, will lead the natural world in future.

Researchers analysed a range of scientific studies and global assessments. Although projections varied, all found that fundamental changes are needed in order to avoid declining populations across many types of plant and animal species.

United front

"There is no question that business-as-usual development pathways will lead to catastrophic biodiversity loss," said research leader Paul Leadley from the Universite Paris-Sud.

"Even optimistic scenarios for this century consistently predict extinctions and shrinking populations of many species."

This picture is, in large part, what the CBD meeting is supposed to prevent.

One of the many debates currently ongoing at the meeting here is what the global target for 2020 should be - to completely halt the loss of biodiversity, or something less ambitious.

Dr Leadley's analysis backs up the view of many that a complete halt is not feasible.

But governments do at least appear united in their desire to do something, according to Dr Stuart, one of a large IUCN team monitoring developments here.

"They've said that they want to see improvements in status, especially in those species that are most at risk," he told BBC News.

"That to us is a very good target - we think it's achievable with a lot of effort.

"There doesn't seem to be much disagreement between countries on that issue - on other issues, yes, but on the species issue they're pretty solid."

However, on financing for species protection there is a lot of disagreement.

Some developing countries want a 100-fold increase in current rates of spending by the West. Other nations are arguing for a 10-fold rise.

But given that the world is in recession, that climate change is also supposed to see a huge and rapid increase in spending, and that no-one knows what the current spend on biodiversity actually is, all bets are currently off on what wording delegates will eventually arrive at.

In the struggle to deliver a healthier, more just and environmentally-sound world one issue is clear. The Earth's life support systems, from its forests and flowers to its coral reefs and waterways, are under assault as never before. Four years ago, at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the leaders of the world agreed to achieve by 2010 "a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at global, regional and national levels as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on earth'". In September 2005, 150 Heads of State, meeting at the World Summit in New York called on all states to fulfil their commitment and significantly reduce the rate of loss of biodiversity by 2010. Meanwhile the findings of a landmark 2005 study into the health of the planet's ecosystems, called the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, undertaken by over 1,300 experts from 95 countries, has added its voice to those of the politicians. Two thirds of the services provided by nature to humankind are in decline, worldwide. Humans have made unprecedented changes to ecosystems in recent decades to meet growing demands for food and other ecosystems services. These changes have weakened nature's ability to deliver its vital services. Human activity is putting such strain on the natural functions of Earth that the ability of the planet's ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted. This landmark study concludes that to attain the 2010 biodiversity target will require not only fine words, but an unprecedented effort by all sections of society. The Convention on Biological Diversity is about life on earth. The achievement of the 2010 biodiversity target is of a crucial importance for everyone alive today and for our children and grandchildren and generations to be born.I would like to call on everyone to join this unprecedented effort to conserve life on Earth and to realize the 2010 target.

Last Chance for Life on Earth?
Thousands of decision makers are meeting in Nagoya, Japan (18 to 29 October) to discuss a 'Big Plan' for the next 10 years to reduce the current pressures on the planet's biodiversity. On the table at the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 10) are 20 targets designed to tackle the extinction crisis and restore the earth's natural capital.

A peek behind the figures (30 September 2010) The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species explained
The 'global extinction crisis' has been in the news for a while now and conservationists are constantly throwing figures at us to illustrate the overwhelming scale of biodiversity loss. "Twenty-one percent of all known mammals, 29 percent of all known amphibians, 12 percent of all known birds, 35 percent of conifers and cycads, 17 percent of sharks and 27 percent of reef-building corals are threatened with extinction" - many of us could lose sleep over this alarming data. But what exactly does it mean? Who calculates these figures and how? How do we know that a particular species is Vulnerable, Endangered, or Extinct?
(...) While the Red List contains assessments of all known species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reef-building corals, freshwater crabs, cycads and conifers, the vast majority of the world's species are still poorly represented, including many plants, invertebrates, reptiles, fishes and fungi. And there is still a lot to be discovered: globally, only 1.9 million species have been described, though the estimated number of species is thought to be somewhere between 10 and 20 million."Currently there are over 52,000 species on the IUCN Red List", says Simon Stuart, Chair of IUCN Species Survival Commission. "The objective is to expand the Red List to include 160,000 species, making it more representative of the diversity of life, thus providing a solid base for conservation planning decisions. However, this will require a significant increase in funding as over USD 60 million would be needed to complete the assessments."

New study shows over one fifth of the world's plants are under threat of extinction (29 September 2010)
A global analysis of extinction risk for the world's plants, conducted by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew together with the Natural History Museum, London and IUCN, has revealed that the world's plants are as threatened as mammals, with one in five of the world's plant species threatened with extinction. The study is a major baseline for plant conservation and is the first time that the true extent of the threat to the world's estimated 380,000 plant species is known, announced as governments are to meet in Nagoya, Japan in mid-October 2010 to set new targets at the United Nations Biodiversity Summit. Species conservation - is extinction inevitable? (Oct 27, 2010 radio interview)
“Species extinction is rather like death and taxes,” says Stuart Pimm, professor of conservation ecology at Duke University. “They are an inevitable part of life, but you just don’t want them to happen at too great a rate.” He’s responding to the findings released today in the journal Science and announced at the United Nations Biodiversity Summit in Japan, that a fifth of the world’s mammals, birds, reptiles and fish are in imminent danger of extinction. The numbers are especially alarming when you consider that species are dying off at an increasing speed, at about 100 to 1000 times the historical rate. Why this increase in loss? You guessed it… we humans are part of the problem, as we destroy habitat and contribute to climate change. Guest: Stuart Pimm, Professor of Conservation Ecology in the division of Environmental Sciences & Policy at Duke University

Extinction crisis continues apace (3 November 2009)
The latest update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species shows that 17,291 species out of the 47,677 assessed species are threatened with extinction. The results reveal 21 percent of all known mammals, 30 percent of all known amphibians, 12 percent of all known birds, and 28 percent of reptiles, 37 percent of freshwater fishes, 70 percent of plants, 35 percent of invertebrates assessed so far are under threat."The scientific evidence of a serious extinction crisis is mounting," says Jane Smart, Director of IUCN's Biodiversity Conservation Group. "January sees the launch of the International Year of Biodiversity. The latest analysis of the IUCN Red List shows the 2010 target to reduce biodiversity loss will not be met. It's time for Governments to start getting serious about saving species and make sure it's high on their agendas for next year, as we're rapidly running out of time." CLIP

Modern extinctions
According to a 1998 survey of 400 biologists conducted by New York's American Museum of Natural History, nearly 70 percent believed that they were currently in the early stages of a human-caused extinction, known as the Holocene extinction (...up to 140,000 species per year may be the present rate of extinction). In that survey, the same proportion of respondents agreed with the prediction that up to 20 percent of all living populations could become extinct within 30 years (by 2028). Biologist E. O. Wilson estimated in 2002 that if current rates of human destruction of the biosphere continue, one-half of all species of life on earth will be extinct in 100 years. More significantly the rate of species extinctions at present is estimated at 100 to 1000 times "background" or average extinction rates in the evolutionary time scale of planet Earth.

Public awareness of the biodiversity crisis is virtually non-existent"

Nature's sting: The real cost of damaging Planet Earth

By Richard AndersonBusiness reporter, BBC News -- 11 October 2010

You don't have to be an environmentalist to care about protecting the Earth's wildlife. Just ask a Chinese fruit farmer who now has to pay people to pollinate apple trees because there are no longer enough bees to do the job for free.

And it's not just the number of bees that is dwindling rapidly - as a direct result of human activity, species are becoming extinct at a rate 1,000 times greater than the natural average. The Earth's natural environment is also suffering.

In the past few decades alone, 20% of the oceans' coral reefs have been destroyed, with a further 20% badly degraded or under serious threat of collapse, while tropical forests equivalent in size to the UK are cut down every two years.

These statistics, and the many more just like them, impact on everyone, for the very simple reason that we will all end up footing the bill.

Costing nature

For the first time in history, we can now begin to quantify just how expensive degradation of nature really is.

A recent, two-year study for the United Nations Environment Programme, entitled The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (Teeb), put the damage done to the natural world by human activity in 2008 at between $2tn (£1.3tn) and $4.5tn.

At the lower estimate, that is roughly equivalent to the entire annual economic output of the UK or Italy.

A second study, for the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), puts the cost considerably higher. Taking what research lead Dr Richard Mattison calls a more "hard-nosed, economic approach", corporate environmental research group Trucost estimates the figure at $6.6tn, or 11% of global economic output.

This, says Trucost, compares with a $5.4tn fall in the value of pension funds in developed countries caused by the global financial crisis in 2007 and 2008.

Of course these figures are just estimates - there is no exact science to measuring humans' impact on the natural world - but they show that the risks to the global economy of large-scale environmental destruction are huge.

Natural services

The reason the world is waking up to the real cost of the degradation of the Earth's wildlife and resources - commonly referred to as biodiversity loss - is because, until now, no one has had to pay for it.

Businesses and individuals have largely operated on the basis that the natural resources and services that the planet provides are infinite.

But of course they are not. And only when the value of protecting them, and in some cases replacing them, is calculated, does their vital role in the global economy become clear.

Some are obvious, for example the clean and accessible water that is needed to grow crops to eat, and the fish that provide one-sixth of the protein consumed by the human population.

But others are less so, for example the mangrove swamps and coral reefs that provide natural barriers against storms that devastate coastal regions; the vast array of plant species that provide pharmaceutical companies with endless genetic resources used for live-saving drugs; and the insects that provide essential pollination for growing around 70% of the world's most productive crops.

Bee collapse

It is a hugely complex process, but an economic value can be placed on these resources and services.
In the US in 2007, for example, the cost to farmers of a collapse in the number of bees was $15bn, according to the US Department of Agriculture, contributing to a global cost of pollination services of $190bn, according to Teeb.

As Paven Sukhdev, a career banker and team leader of Teeb, says: "Bees don't send invoices".

Research by consultancy group PricewaterhouseCoopers also suggests the economic losses caused by the introduction of non-indigenous, agricultural pests in Australia, Brazil, India, South Africa, the US and the UK are more than $100bn a year.

In 1998, flash flooding in the Yangtze River in China killed more than 4,000 people, displaced millions more and caused damage estimated at $30bn. The Chinese government established that extensive logging in the region over the previous 50 years had removed the trees that provided essential protection from floods. It promptly banned logging.

Indeed the Centre for International Forestry Research has estimated that, in the 50 years prior to the ban, deforestation cost the Chinese economy around $12bn a year.

Business costs

The impact of biodiversity loss is felt hardest by the world's poor. The livelihood and employment of hundreds of millions of people depend upon the world's natural resources, whether it be fish to eat or sell, fertile soil for farming or trees for fuel, construction and flood control, to name just three.

As Mr Sukhdev explains: "Biodiversity is valuable for everyone, but it is an absolute necessity for the poor". For example, Teeb has calculated that the Earth's natural resources and the services they provide contribute 75% of the total economic output of Indonesia, and almost half of India's output.

But it's not only the poor who suffer. Businesses will increasingly be hit as they start paying for their part in biodiversity loss.

Not only will they have to pay to protect or replace services that nature has historically provided for free, but they will be forced to pay by regulatory instruments such as pollution taxes, like carbon credits and landfill taxes that already exist, and higher insurance premiums.

Then there is the cost of paying for the increased number of natural disasters, resulting in part from more extreme weather conditions caused by rising temperatures due to greenhouse gases, and even reputational damage among consumers that are becoming increasingly sensitive to environmental issues.

Trucost and PRI have estimated the cost of environmental damage caused by the world's largest 3,000 companies in 2008 at $2.15tn. That equates to around one-third of their combined profits.

Again, these figures are only estimates, but the scale of the costs that will have to be paid by companies for their damage to the environment cannot be ignored.

As Gavin Neath, senior vice president of sustainability at consumer goods giant Unilever, says: "It's pretty terrifying. Nobody in business thinks that at some point this is not going to hurt us".

Pension values

And higher costs for business mean higher prices for consumers.

Only this summer, massive floods in Pakistan and China forced the global cotton price to 15-year highs, pushing up the costs of clothes, with retailers such as Primark, Next and H&M all warning of higher prices to come.

Drought and wildfires in Russia also sent wheat prices rocketing, sending global food prices sharply higher.
But consumers won't just be hit by rising prices. As Trucost's research shows, earnings and profits of the world's largest companies will come under increasing pressure, undermining share price growth. And it is precisely these companies that pension funds invest in.

Pension values, therefore, are likely to suffer, reducing retirement incomes for all. The cost of the current, rapid rate of degradation of the earth's natural resources will, then, be borne by everyone, environmentalist or not.

This is the first in a series of three articles on the economic cost of human activity on the natural world.
The second will look at which sectors and businesses have been hit hardest, and the third will look at what can be done to slow biodiversity loss, and what opportunities it presents.

'Ten years' to solve nature crisis, UN meeting hears (18 October 2010)
The UN biodiversity convention meeting has opened with warnings that the ongoing loss of nature is hurting human societies as well as the natural world. The two-week gathering aims to set new targets for conserving life on Earth. Japan's Environment Minister Ryo Matsumoto said biodiversity loss would become irreversible unless curbed soon. Much hope is being pinned on economic analyses showing the loss of species and ecosystems is costing the global economy trillions of dollars each year.Ahmed Djoghlaf, executive secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), described the meeting in Nagoya, Japan, as a "defining moment" in the history of mankind. [Buddhist scholar] Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki said 'the problem of nature is the problem of human life'. Today, unfortunately, human life is a problem for nature," he told delegates in his opening speech. Referring to the target set at the UN World Summit in 2002, he said: "Let's have the courage to look in the eyes of our children and admit that we have failed, individually and collectively, to fulfil the Johannesburg promise made by 110 heads of state to substantially reduce the rate of loss of biodiversity by 2010."Let us look in the eyes of our children and admit that we continue to lose biodiversity at an unprecedented rate, thus mortgaging their future."Earlier this year, the UN published a major assessment - the Global Biodiversity Outlook - indicating that virtually all trends spanning the state of the natural world were heading downwards, despite conservation successes in some regions. It showed that loss and degradation of forests, coral reefs, rivers and other elements of the natural world was having an impact on living standards in some parts of the world - an obvious example being the extent to which loss of coral affects fish stocks. In his opening speech, Mr Matsumoto suggested impacts could be much broader in future. "All life on Earth exists thanks to the benefits from biodiversity in the forms of fertile soil, clear water and clean air," he said."We are now close to a 'tipping point' - that is, we are about to reach a threshold beyond which biodiversity loss will become irreversible, and may cross that threshold in the next 10 years if we do not make proactive efforts for conserving biodiversity."
(...) Governments first agreed back in 1992, at the Rio Earth Summit that the ongoing loss of biodiversity needed attention. The CBD was born there, alongside the UN climate convention. It aims to preserve the diversity of life on Earth, facilitate the sustainable use of plants and animals, and allow fair and equitable exploitation of natural genetic resources. The UN hopes that a protocol on the final element - known as access and benefit sharing (ABS) - can be secured here, 18 years after it was agreed in principle. However, the bitter politicking that has soured the atmosphere in a number of UN environment processes - most notably at the Copenhagen climate summit - looms over the Nagoya meeting. Some developing nations are insisting that the ABS protocol be signed off before they will agree to the establishment of an international scientific panel to assess biodiversity issues. The Intergovernental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is due to be signed off during the current UN General Assembly session in New York. Many experts - and Western governments - believe it is necessary if scientific evidence on the importance of biodiversity loss is to be transmitted effectively to policymakers.

Goodwill and compromise: Nagoya biodiversity deal restores faith in UN

Jonathan Watts - 29 October 2010

After the failure of the Copenhagen climate talks, a successful agreement to protect biodiversity has provided a timely morale booster.

In the long run, the biodiversity deal scratched out in Nagoya in the early hours of this morning is intended to benefit habitats and species such as tigers, pandas and whales. But in the short-term, the biggest beast to get a reprieve may well prove to be the UN itself.

After the misery, disappointment and anger of last year's climate talks in Copenhagen, the body was fiercely criticised and the entire multilateral negotiating process called into question. It seemed time-consuming, prone to grandstanding and dominated by selfish national interests rather than pressing global concerns.

At the start of this week, the talks in Nagoya looked likely to become another chapter in the same sorry story. But since then, there has been an impressive – and ultimately successful – willingness to work.

Square brackets (which denote areas of disagreement) have been steadily whittled away from the negotiating texts. Pragmatism has been more evident than ideology. Delegates actually seemed willing to listen to the advice of scientists warning of the perils of inaction.

Some key goals have been set, including a plan to expand nature reserves to 17% of the world's land and 10% of the planet's waters. For a scarred veteran of the Copenhagen or Tianjin climate talks, the extent of the progress, goodwill and readiness to compromise during these past few days has been pleasantly shocking. Right up to the final hour, there have been moments when the talks appeared on the verge of collapse. But negotiators have been flexible enough to skirt around the danger zone.

This is no accident. Ahead of this event – and not wanting to repeat the breakdown of last year's talks - the EU negotiating team was given a wider mandate. The same may be true of other nations.

That alone cannot explain why the results of Nagoya and Copenhagen were so different. Other factors include the smaller scale of this event and the expectations for it. There was less superpower pride and influence at stake: the United States is not a signatory and China has been relatively low-key. Brazil and the EU have bent over backwards to secure a deal. China and India have shown a willingness to compromise. Even Bolivia and Cuba complained but did not block.

The Japanese hosts also deserve a great deal of credit for the smooth organisation, though at times they have been almost comically hospitable in breaking up finelypoised negotiating sessions for food, drink and music receptions.

But the most important difference may be in implementation. One of the reasons why climate negotiations are so tetchy is because rival nations want stringent checks in place to make sure everyone complies and on course to realise their goals to reduce carbon emissions.

That is sadly not true for biodiversity targets, which tend to be vaguely worded and voluntary. Nature cannot complain if it gets cheated. This is a major reason why the last set of UN biodiversity goals were nowhere near being realised.

The drafters of the new Nagoya protocol say such lessons have been learned so a tighter road-map will be put in place that ties funds to progress, mobilises private finance as well as public funds and sees nature in terms of benefits to be shared rather.

One of the great achievements of this conference has been to highlight the fact that biodiversity is not just about saving a few cute animals, but about preventing risks to entire ecosystems, economies and ultimately human life. As a result, bird-lovers and tree-huggers have started to find common cause with insurers and investors.

In the conference centre last night, the mood was one of relief more than euphoria. But many expressed hope that this deal may provide momentum for the climate talks at Cancún next month. That seems optimistic.

It is too early too say whether Nagoya marks a turning point for UN multilateralism, let alone life on Earth. But for both, it is at least a much-needed morale booster.

Agreement reached at biodiversity summit (October 29, 2010) SOME PRETTY GOOD NEWS AT LAST!
Delegates meeting in Nagoya, Japan, at the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP10) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) today agreed to take new steps to halt the global decline of biodiversity. Representatives from 193 governments participating in the CBD agreed to 20 objectives for 2020, including a zero tolerance target for species extinction; a goal to protect 17 percent of all inland water and terrestrial areas, and 10 percent of marine areas; restoration of 15 percent of degraded ecosystems; and reducing habitat loss by at least 50 percent. The agreement comes after countries failed to meet many of the 2010 global targets for CBD. “This conference must be viewed as a success and a major global achievement," said Russ Mittermeier, President of Conservation International, in a statement. "We were able to solve the key issues that were blocking the negotiations and ended up with a strategic plan with 20 targets to protect biodiversity over the next decade. Some participants say Japan's announcement that it would commit $2 billion in funding toward biodiversity helped reenergize the talks, which had stalled over targets and rights over genetic resources. In the end, the conference produced the agreement on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS), which aims to stop biopiracy and reward countries for genetic resources. "I won’t say it’s a miracle that we achieved this agreement, but it is surely historic," said Mittermeier. The agreement also named water as a particularly important ecosystem service—a recognition that should lead to better protection of wetlands, rivers, and forests—and established controls on geoengineering. "No climate-related geo-engineering activities that may affect biodiversity take place, until there is an adequate scientific basis on which to justify such activities and appropriate consideration of the associated risks for the environment and biodiversity and associated social, economic and cultural impacts, with the exception of small-scale scientific research studies," stated the geoengineering measure adopted under the CBD. High-level negotiations will begin again next month with the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico.

Biodiversity talks: Ministers in Nagoya adopt new strategy (29 October 2010)
Environment ministers from almost 200 nations agreed late tonight to adopt a new United Nations strategy that aims to stem the worst loss of life on earth since the demise of the dinosaurs. With a typhoon looming outside and cheering inside the Nagoya conference hall, the Japanese chair of the UN biodiversity talks gavelled into effect the Aichi Targets, set to at least halve the loss of natural habitats and expand nature reserves to 17% of the world's land area by 2020 up from less than 10% today. Fish and other aquatic life should be provided with greater refuge, under the Aichi Targets — as the plan is named, after the region around Nagoya — which including a widening of marine protected zones to 10 per cent of the world's seas, an increase from barely 1 per cent today. Frantic late-night negotiations also saw the UN's COP10 biodiversity conference adopt a new treaty, the Nagoya Protocol, to manage the world's genetic resources and share the multibillion-dollar benefits with developing nations and indigenous communities. Despite concerns that targets are inadequately funded and not sufficiently ambitiousto reverse the decline of habitats and species, most organisers, delegates and NGOs expressed there was relief that negotiations had avoided the friction and fracture of last year's climate talks in Copenhagen. Harrison Ford chides US for spurning international biodiversity treaty (October 28, 2010)
In a speech in Nagoya, Japan at the UN's Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) actor and conservationist, Harrison Ford, called on delegates to put aside differences and adopt a strong treaty to protect biodiversity. As a US citizen, he also urged his country to become a full signatory of the CBD. "The time has come for the United States to step up to the plate. The problem is so big and the time is so short, we have no choice. We have to act and we have to act now," said Ford, well-known for roles in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films among others. Off the silver screen, Ford is the Vice Chair of environmental organization, Conservation International (CI). The US is one of three countries that has not signed onto the UN's Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD): the other two are Andorra and the Holy See. President Bill Clinton signed the treaty in 1993, but the US Senate refused to ratify it. Ford told CNN that he was "embarrassed" the US was not yet a signatory. "Nature is at the tipping point. We have to act decisively, boldly now. We have to be efficient with the use of our resources. We have to be directed and focused on the most important thing, the most important places. The places that provide the greatest reservoirs of biodiversity and provide the greatest services to the human community," Ford said to CNN.
(...) Asked to convince people why they should care about biodiversity, Ford said on CNN: "It is in your self interest. Human beings are part of the natural world and the natural world requires all of its components working—just like the body requires all of its organs working together. The natural requires biodiversity—all of the elements of life working together—in order to be healthy". CLIP

Happier and greener (October 30 2010)
The UN Convention on Biological Diversity meeting at Nagoya, which finished on Friday, opened by admitting defeat. The promise made at the UN Johannesburg conference in 2002 substantially to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010 had been comprehensively broken. The UN’s Global Biodiversity Outlook report, published earlier this year, showed “multiple indications of continuing decline in biodiversity in all three of its main components – genes, species and ecosystems”. The meeting was inauspicious in other ways; it came a year after the disastrous Copenhagen climate change summit, which for many was the final nail in the coffin of hope that intergovernmental action might halt environmental degradation. But perhaps the relatively low profile and reduced expectations of Nagoya (only five heads of state, as opposed to 120 at Copenhagen) might have some advantages. Previous meetings and pledges on biodiversity have been marked by dishonesty and denial. The 1992 Rio Earth Summit may have performed a service in flagging up the losses being sustained by the natural world, but the pious promises made subsequently were worth little more than the paper they were written on. Paradoxically, admitting defeat may be a good start. Another paradoxically good sign may be the shift in emphasis from nature itself onto the human activities: fertiliser and pesticide-heavy agriculture, reckless over-fishing, logging and deforestation that are endangering and damaging it. It is not much good setting targets for the preservation of nature, and then putting the onus for meeting them on bodies with no real clout, while the real destructive forces are allowed to continue unchecked. World needs to protect 32 million square kilometers of ocean in two years (October 20, 2010)
According to goals set in 2002 by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Summit on Sustainable Development, nations must spend the next two years catching-up on creating ocean reserve. Currently, about 1.17 percent of the ocean is under some form of protection, but the 2002 goal was 10 percent by 2012. That means protecting over 32.5 million square kilometers, of the ocean twice the size of Russia. According to a recent report, Global Ocean Protection by the Nature Conservancy, not only is the world failing on its goals to protect a significant portion of the ocean, it's also failing to protect 10 percent of various marine ecosystems. "Overall the shortfall in our achievements is quite shocking," says Mark Spalding with The Nature Conservancy and an editor of the report. "We attained only one tenth of our target. Even that statistic is buoyed up by a handful of giant marine parks, leaving a greater shortfall in many areas where the pressures are most intense. We need to realize that marine protection isn’t just about nature, it’s about ourselves. If we can’t manage and sustain our seas in their entirety, humans will be high on the list of losers." Overfishing, pollution, and climate change has left the world's oceans in dire shape: marine species (such as sharks and tuna) are plummeting, coral reefs face possible extinction from acidification due to greenhouse gas emissions, and runoff from agriculture has left parts of the ocean virtually starved of oxygen. A study in 2008 found that only 4 percent of the ocean could be classified as 'pristine'. Researchers with the Nature Conservancy suggest that governments around the world work on 'marine spatial planning', i.e. zoning the oceans in a way a city creates zones. CLIP

Geoengineering sparks international ban, first-ever congressional report (October 30, 2010)
A senior House Democrat from Tennessee issued the first congressional report on geoengineering Friday, just as delegates from 193 nations approved a ban on such research under a global biodiversity treaty. The debate over whether humans should explore ways to manipulate the climate has taken on increased urgency over the past year, as efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions linked to global warming have encountered political roadblocks in the United States and elsewhere. The measure adopted under the Convention on Biological Diversity, which recently concluded in Nagoya, Japan, states "that no climate-related geo-engineering activities that may affect biodiversity take place, until there is an adequate scientific basis on which to justify such activities and appropriate consideration of the associated risks for the environment and biodiversity and associated social, economic and cultural impacts, with the exception of small-scale scientific research studies" under controlled circumstances.Although some scientists and environmentalists have called for geoengineering research as a precautionary measure against catastrophic global warming, activists hailed the moratorium as a way to keep individual actors from altering the climate. The prohibition does not apply to the United States, which has yet to ratify the convention. House Science and Technology Committee Chairman Bart Gordon (D) said his report was "in no way meant as an endorsement of climate engineering" but instead an effort to give "insight into where existing federal research capacities lie that could be leveraged for these activities.""Climate engineering carries with it a tremendous range of uncertainties and possibilities, ethical and political concerns, and the potential for catastrophic side effects," Gordon said. "If we find ourselves passing an environmental tipping point, we will need to have done research to understand our options." CLIP

Geoengineering Moratorium at UN Ministerial in Japan - Risky Climate Techno-fixes Blocked (29 October 2010) EXCELLENT DECISION! NOW WILL THE US/GLOBAL CABAL COMPLY? SEE THE NEXT 2 ITEMS BELOW
NAGOYA, Japan - In a landmark consensus decision, the 193-member UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will close its tenth biennial meeting with a de facto moratorium on geoengineering projects and experiments. "Any private or public experimentation or adventurism intended to manipulate the planetary thermostat will be in violation of this carefully crafted UN consensus," stated Silvia Ribeiro, Latin American Director of ETC Group. The agreement, reached during the ministerial portion of the two-week meeting which included 110 environment ministers, asks governments to ensure that no geoengineering activities take place until risks to the environment and biodiversity and associated social, cultural and economic impacts have been appropriately considered. The CBD secretariat was also instructed to report back on various geoengineering proposals and potential intergovernmental regulatory measures. The unusually strong consensus decision builds on the 2008 moratorium on ocean fertilization. That agreement, negotiated at COP 9 in Bonn, put the brakes on a litany of failed "experiments" - both public and private - to sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide in the oceans' depths by spreading nutrients on the sea surface. Since then, attention has turned to a range of futuristic proposals to block a percentage of solar radiation via large-scale interventions in the atmosphere, stratosphere and outer space that would alter global temperatures and precipitation patterns. "This decision clearly places the governance of geoengineering in the United Nations where it belongs," said ETC Group Executive Director Pat Mooney. "This decision is a victory for common sense, and for precaution. It will not inhibit legitimate scientific research. Decisions on geoengineering cannot be made by small groups of scientists from a small group of countries that establish self-serving 'voluntary guidelines' on climate hacking. CLIP

What in the World Are They Spraying? (1 hr 37 min documentary)
By now everyone has seen crisscrossing streaks of white clouds trailing behind jet aircraft, stretching from horizon to horizon, eventually turning the sky into a murky haze. Our innate intelligence tells us these are not mere vapor trails from jet engines, but no one yet has probed the questions: who is doing this and why. With the release of this video, all of that has changed. Here is the story of a rapidly developing industry called geo-engineering, driven by scientists, corporations, and governments intent on changing global climate, controlling the weather, and altering the chemical composition of soil and water all supposedly for the betterment of mankind. Although officials insist that these programs are only in the discussion phase, evidence is abundant that they have been underway since circa 1990 and the effect has been devastating to crops, wildlife, and human health. We are being sprayed with toxic substances without our consent and, to add insult to injury, they are lying to us about it. Do not watch this documentary if you have high blood pressure.

What in the World Are They Spraying? Part II (March 24, 2010)
Could Aluminum, Barium and Other Substances From Stratospheric Aerosol Geo-Engineering Programs be Destroying Eco-Systems around the World? A Closer Look. What would you do if you were told that toxic substances being sprayed into the sky are falling to the ground and decimating eco-systems around the world? This very claim, made by concerned citizens outside the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting last month in San Diego, sparked my interest to investigate further. The AAAS meeting hosted several top geo-engineering scientists who gathered to discuss the "plausibility" of implementing various geo-engineering programs throughout the world. One of the options addressed was the stratospheric aerosol geo-engineering (SAG) , AKA chemtrail program, where scientists discussed the "plausibility" of spraying aerosol aluminum, barium and other particles into the sky to block the sun as a means to "reduce" the Earth's temperature. When asked specifically about the potential risks associated with using aluminum in the program as an aerosol, scientists replied by stating that they have not studied much about the risks associated with aluminum and added that something terrible could be found tomorrow that they haven't looked at. When probed further about the deployment of existing aerosol programs, the scientists stated that no aerosol spraying programs have been deployed to date. The concerned citizens I met outside the meeting were claiming quite the opposite. They came in protest after witnessing airplanes that they believe are regularly spraying aerosols into the upper-part of the sky. Many from this group have tested and found extremely high levels of aluminum, barium and other substances in their soil, rain, water and snow. Ironically, the substances that they reported finding are the same substances the scientists are "considering" implementing in the various aerosol spraying programs discussed at the meeting. They also believe that these substances are leading to the destruction of eco-systems and are coming from already deployed SAG programs. CLIP

Natural Value at Bargain Prices (October 29, 2010)
2010 was supposed to be the year that the world reversed the loss of biodiversity. Countries have failed to reach this target, however, and species are becoming extinct at far more than 100 times the natural rate. Worse, it has seemed like the political will to change course simply was not there to do anything about it. Then came the Nagoya Biodiversity Conference, and the negotiations looked like they could get bogged down in a bottomless web of national interests that would have made agreement on a way forward impossible. The talks were tough and ran late, but in the end, countries agreed not only to a new plan of action with new targets, but also on a new and historic protocol that helps to fairly share the benefits of genetic resources. The Nagoya agreement shows that multilateralism is alive and well. (...) According to The Economics of Ecosystems & Biodiversity report, which was just launched at the UN's Biodiversity Conference in Nagoya, the services that the world's forests, wetlands, coral reefs, and marine ecosystems provide is around $2 to 4.5 trillion per year, every year. Although the idea of green accounting is not new, the new look at valuing nature has taken on a new dimension in efforts to address climate change. Already, it has been recognized that a standing natural forest, particularly rainforests, may have more value to the world for their ability to absorb carbon dioxide emissions. It will cost between $17.2 to $33 billion to protect the forests and cut emissions by 2.7 gigatons of carbon dioxide a year. But it is estimated that the benefits of action is $37 trillion, in present value terms. But it's more than just forests and watersheds. Coral reefs protect coastlines from storms, nourish schools of fish, and provide the backbone for tourism and local economic development. Take away the reefs and everyone will be poorer for it. Putting a price tag on nature, while not always appropriate, is a very useful tool that governments, from the local level to the global, can use to make much smarter decisions that will help promote economic development while protecting the natural services that we cannot afford to lose. Economist calls for radical look at how to account for biodiversity costs (29.10.2010),,6170201,00.html
The results of a UN-sponsored report on the economics of biodiversity loss, called TEEB, were delivered at this year's Convention on Biodiversity in Japan. The study outlined a path for a radical rethink of economics. -- Deutsche Welle: Pavan Sukhdev, you describe your study results and recommendations for accounting for biodiversity as 'opportunities.' But I'm sure that in these stretched economic times, a lot of businesses might be thinking, 'I don't want more regulations, more contingencies to cope with.' How would you answer them?Pavan Sukhdev: One of the main problems with biodiversity is that because it's nature, its many services are delivered free. I call this 'the economic invisibility of nature.' Because of this, we have a tendency not to value what we receive from them – be it clean air, fresh water, or nutrients that come from forests to the fields, or some other benefit, like pollination. I mean, you never see a bee sending you an invoice, or a tree sending you an invoice, either for pollination or for air cleaning, but that's what they do. These are valuable economic services. Without pollination from insects, you'd be out of pocket perhaps 200 billion dollars per annum if you tried to do these things manually. So you need to recognize the reality that our economic compass is defective. It's partial; it looks at some things and not at others. It looks mainly at goods and services that are traded and priced in markets, but not those which are not traded and priced in markets. And almost everything that comes from nature is neither traded nor priced in markets. Specifically, how would a sector or industry start incorporating biodiversity into their accounts? The reality is that today's corporation is not compelled to do anything. They only have to optimize shareholder benefits and profits. And unless they see things from a long-term perspective, then the drive to externalize costs isn't very strong. But when you have a long term perspective, then it becomes a relationship with your shareholders, your customers, your local society, your local governments. And when you take that longer term perspective on business, that's when you begin to say: "Aha… Well we do have cost externalities." CLIP

Biodiversity / 'Save Our Species' conservation fund launched / World Bank, environmental organizations partner on real world mechanism to protect biodiversity (Oct. 29, 2010)
NAGOYA--The World Bank, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Global Environment Facility on Thursday announced the establishment of the Save Our Species (SOS) initiative and called on businesses to help create the world's largest species conservation fund by 2015. Launched on the sidelines of the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) in Nagoya, SOS will provide grants to civil societies around the world to implement conservation action on the ground, focusing on specific threatened species and their habitats. Priorities will be identified by world experts led by the Species Survival Commission of the IUCN. "We all know that today this Earth is actually a very dangerous place to be," GEF Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson Monique Barbut said at a press conference. "Species are the fundamental component of biodiversity, and we rely on their survival for our own existence." The GEF is an independent financial organization that provides grants for environmental projects around the world, including those related to biodiversity and climate change. There also is a powerful emotional need to have a wide variety of nature, Barbut said: "Exotic species such as the tiger, the panda are recognized by all societies and cultures. They provide the most useful and usable indicators of biodiversity status and loss. Most importantly, the public understands and empathizes with them."SOS' initial goal is to raise 20 million dollars and it is already more than halfway toward that target, partly due to 10 million dollars contributed by the World Bank and GEF. Canada's biodiversity flop (OCTOBER 29, 2010)
First, the federal government faced an abrupt collapse of relations with the United Arab Emirates. Next, an embarrassing defeat in a bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council. Now, Conservative Ottawa seems to be picking on defenseless animals threatened with extinction. A new study by almost 200 scientists warns that 20 per cent of Earth's vertebrates could disappear forever. That would be a massive bite out of the planet's biodiversity and its benefits to humans, such as profits, clean drinking water, crop pollination and medicines. Canada's natural response might be to lead the global conservation push. But in 2010, this International Year of Biodiversity, Canada has instead been singled out, along with the European Union, for frustrating conservation talks. One of the extinction study's lead authors accused Canada of "playing a particularly obstructive role" in efforts to build a binding treaty, a role that could "be disastrous for biodiversity globally."Environment Canada remains confident progress can be made "in the best interests of Canadians."Well, Canadians have all kinds of interests, and only one of them is protecting companies here from new global rules blocking their access to money-making resources or forcing them to accept lower profits. Canada has already failed to meet targets to slow biodiversity loss as set out in the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, an agreement signed in 1992. Environment Minister Jim Prentice took an upbeat approach last week: "Missing the 2010 targets should inspire us all to do better." But that sounds a bit like saying having a traffic accident is a good way of encouraging better driving. If bad news is the kick in the pants this federal government needs, surely a global extinction crisis ought to motivate some real action.Or maybe facing yet another international embarrassment will do it. - IT IS BECOMING URGENT TO RID CANADA OF THIS EMBARRASSINGLY OUT-OF-SYNCH GOVERNMENT AND FINALLY GET SOME GREEN SPINE IN OTTAWA TO PUT THE FOSSIL LOBBIES IN THE DUSTBIN OF HISTORY ONCE AND FOR ALL.

DNA barcoding aims to protect species, food (Oct 29, 2010)
(Reuters) - Call it a DNA digital Dewey Decimal System for all life on Earth. -- Every species, from extinct to thriving, is set to get its own DNA barcode in an attempt to better track the ones that are endangered, as well as those being shipped across international borders as food or consumer products. Researchers hope handheld mobile devices will be able to one day read these digital strips of rainbow-colored barcodes -- much like supermarket scanners -- to identify different species by testing tissue samples on site and comparing them with a digital database. The International Barcode of Life Project (iBOL), which says it is the world's first reference library of DNA barcodes and the world's largest biodiversity genomics project, is being built by scientists using fragments of DNA to create a database of all life forms."What we're trying to do is to create this global library of DNA barcodes -- snippets, little chunks of DNA -- that permit us to identify species," Alex Smith, assistant professor of molecular ecology at the University of Guelph's Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, about 90 km (56 miles) west of Toronto. So far DNA barcoding has helped identify the type of birds that forced last year's emergency landing of a flight on the Hudson River in New York. The researchers also discovered nearly one in four fish fillets are mislabeled in North America after referring to the library, which has 7,000 species of fish DNA barcodes, allowing the scientists to identify fillets that have been stripped of scales, skins and heads. To get the barcodes, scientists use a short section of DNA extracted from a standardized region of tissue. Once the barcode is created, it's filed in the iBOL library. Within a week, the barcode can be viewed publicly, online, by signing up for a free account at, the site for Barcode of Life Datasystems (BOLD). Smith describes it as being like a label on a filing cabinet.Just as the barcode scanner at a grocery store can identify lettuce, milk or steak, the DNA barcode sequence can be used to identify different species so that anyone who isn't a specialist -- from an elementary school student to a border patrol inspector -- can identify the species, once technology to read the library is available. The library has more than 87,000 formally described species with barcodes filed and more than 1 million total barcoded specimens. Smith said humans live among at least 1.9 million named species, with total diversity within all those species adding up to millions more. Scientists estimate iBOL will have barcodes for all 10 million species of multicellular life within the next 20 years. While the library is based in Canada, which led the early stages of DNA barcoding, 25 other countries are also involved."Most of life on the planet is not polar bears and Siberian tigers -- most of life on the planet weighs less than a gram, is less than a centimeter long, and isn't visual. It experiences the world through taste and smell and we're not aware of its existence," Smith said. CLIP

Today, two are being moved between zoos in the UK - from the Rare Species Conservation Centre in Kent to Colchester Zoo in Essex. Sun bears are very small, but extremely fierce. But while the bears are anaesthetised and given an essential check-up before their journey, it also gives Dr Masters access to a precious resource: their DNA. Dr Masters explains: "We are losing species too quickly, therefore we ought to preserve at least the genetic material that has taken millions and millions of years to evolve." The sun bear samples are heading to the Frozen Ark, which has its headquarters at the University of Nottingham. Here they are frozen and then stored with samples that have been collected, by a network of vets and scientists, from endangered species all around the world. The team behind the Frozen Ark says that it could provide the ultimate back-up plan for when all other conservation efforts fail.Dr Ann Clarke, one of the Frozen Ark's founders, comments: "Like Dolly the sheep, although scientists do not like to talk too much about this, there is a very real possibility that we might be able to one day bring back an extinct or a very endangered species." While bringing extinct animals back from the dead sounds like science fiction, thanks to recent advances in cloning technology it is much closer to reality than you might think. In 2009, a Spanish team created a clone of the extinct Pyrenean ibex. The animal died shortly after birth, but it has marked the beginnings for this new - and controversial - branch of conservation biology. CLIP

Food crop biodiversity is under threat, UN warns (Oct 26, 2010)
Rome - The genetic diversity of many plants used for food could be lost forever unless nations, especially those in the developing world, invest in ways to conserve and utilise them, a United Nations report warned Tuesday. It is estimated that 75 per cent of crop diversity was lost between 1900 and 2000 and a recent study predicts that as much as 22 percent of the 'wild relatives' of importanof the worldwide proprietary seed markett food crops such as peanut, potato and beans will disappear by 2055 because of a changing climate. The findings are contained in the second edition of the State of the World's Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture report, produced by the Rome-based UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). 'There are thousands of crop wild relatives that still need to be collected, studied and documented because they hold genetic secrets that enable them to resist heat, droughts, salinity floods and pests,' FAO Director General Jacques Diouf said. Since the first edition of the report was produced in 1998, the global food landscape has 'changed drastically,' according to the FAO.'Hunger has been reduced in some countries, but has risen in others. Fuel and food prices have increased substantially. Globalisation has widened and deepened, and cheap food imports in some countries have threatened the richness of local diversity,' FAO said. On a 'positive note' over the last 12 years there's been an increase in awareness of the importance of crop biodiversity, leading to a growing number of gene banks worldwide, FAO said. However, the neglect in investment in agriculture since the 1980s has led to a shortage of qualified agricultural scientists, including plant-breeders, especially in developing countries, the report found. -- NO WORD ON THE WORST DESTROYERS OF FOOD CROP BIODIVERSITY! Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta controlling together half of the worldwide proprietary seed market ...

Food Inflation Accelerating as Cooking Oil Poised to Catch Grains (Nov 1, 2010)
Cooking oils, left behind in this year's surge in agriculture prices, are poised to catch up with grains as record demand cuts stockpiles by the most in 17 years. Inventories of soybean oil and palm oil, used by Nestle SA and Unilever and in everything from Hellmann's mayonnaise to Snickers candy bars, will drop 12 percent in the coming year as China and India increase consumption 11 percent, U.S. Department of Agriculture data show. Food prices climbed in September to the highest level since the crisis in 2008 that sparked riots from Haiti to Egypt, the United Nations says. "China's economy is growing and there's no reason why the country will take any less food next week, next month, or next year," said Steve Nicholson, a commodity procurement specialist at International Food Products Corp., a distributor and adviser on food ingredients in Fenton, Missouri. "We've been able to produce more food in the past 2,000 years, but can we do it fast enough to meet the demand from China and other emerging economies to stave off a crisis?"Increasing wealth in Brazil, India and China is boosting demand for grains, dairy, meat and cooking oils. 2010 - International Year of Biodiversity
The planet's natural resources, its biodiversity, provides our wealth, our health, our food and fuel. 130 species become extinct each day. Alarmed at this assault on nature, the United Nations has declared 2010 the international year of biodiversity.

Posted by Benjamin Fulford - October 25, 2010

Although I have been trained as a skeptic and a believer in science, something so unusual happened this new year that I believe it must be an omen. On December 21st a group of shamans held a ceremony by a lake in the Philippines that locals believe to be the home of a goddess. The Shamans, including a revered Maori lady, also believed this lake to be a portal to other dimensions. Whatever the case, there was heavy rain and thick cloud cover as the group headed to the lake for a ceremony to mark a change in how Western civilization behaves. When we arrived at the lake suddenly an area of blue sky appeared immediately above us. All around there was still heavy cloud cover and rain. However, directly over our heads, in the middle of the circle of blue sky there was a new moon. Then on new year’s eve the world experienced an unheralded but precious event, a blue moon on new year’s eve in the West and a blue moon on new year’s day in Asia. A blue moon means a second full moon in one month. A full moon on new year’s eve happens only once in every two decades or so. For both to coincide is something that only happens once in many centuries. Thus I believe we have had a very auspicious beginning to 2010, the Year of the Tiger.

It is interesting to note that while the group of Shamans and elders was holding their ceremony to mark the clean-up of the polluted lake, Federal Reserve Board agents were in the Philippines trying to cash $250 billion worth of gold-backed bonds in a desperate effort to keep their fraudulent institution afloat. The bonds are fake and they would not be allowed to cash them even if they were real.

There was also a lot of consternation and angst in the Japanese secret government after it was revealed the Emperor went to Washington in an effort to get cash to finance the climate change fraud in Copenhagen. George Soros was almost certainly counting on this money when he offered $100 billion in “climate change loans” to developing countries. When Black Dragon Society members in Washington froze the funds, the Emperor was forced to confess to the Chinese vice-President that he had returned empty handed.

So now China has contacted the Black Dragon Society with promises to help finance a campaign to deal with the real problems facing this world: poverty, war and the destruction of eco-systems.

The Black Dragon Society was also contacted by the Kokuryu-kai (the name translates as the Black Dragon Society) which is run by the descendants and spiritual descendants of the founders of the original Black Dragon Society. We explained to them that there was no sense fighting over a name. We explained to them that when I was inducted into the Red and the Green I was asked to start a Western version of that society.

The Western group that sprang up spontaneously across the world has very simple rules: we agree to work together towards shared goals and we agree to protect each other if attacked. This Western group is now capable of mobilizing the British Empire, the Vatican, the Muslim world and much of the US military/intelligence establishment.

We explained to the Kokuryu-kai and the Chinese that the West would never submit itself to rule from the East and likewise the East should never submit itself to rule from the West. Instead we proposed a 50/50 partnership between East and West. There will be many key meetings in January to iron out the details.

There are now several groups with active plans for implementing a new paradigm to replace the one of endless war and genocide being pursued by the criminals who have taken over Western civilization.

One group centered on the British empire would like to begin construction of massive free energy facilities to remove salt from sea-water and use the resulting fresh water to turn the deserts green. This group is allying itself with the Middle Eastern monarchies and plans to work simultaneously in Australia and the Arabian peninsula.

This group also wants to pay the world’s deep sea fishing fleets to stop all fishing for two or three years in order to allow the oceans to replenish themselves.

A different group based in Australia but with powerful connections throughout the G7 proposes turning the deserts green by using etheric weather engineering technology. They also plan to start cleaning up the world’s most polluted sites using zeolite, an abundant mineral that absorbs toxic substances and prevents them from interacting with the environment in a harmful manner. They also have free energy technology.

A third group based on the US military-intelligence establishment proposes a 5-year swords to plowshares transformation of the Pentagon. This group has the potential to develop the over 6,000 patents that have hitherto been suppressed for “national security” reasons. One technology they possess is anti-gravity. This would make automobiles obsolete and allow roadways to be transformed into gardens. They claim to control technology that allows the creation of portals into other dimensions. They claim (we have not seen proof but have heard this from many credible eye-witnesses) that many so-called underground bases around the world are actual such portals. Hopefully we will soon be able to see if this is true. If so the implications are more than mind-boggling.

This group will no doubt join forces with the various “programs” and trusts that have been fighting the Federal Reserve Board for decades.

A fourth group linking the Vatican and Russia sent us the following proposal:

We are working with leading world scientists from top prestigious institutions in Russia, they are developing many innovations in the fields of energy generating (heat and/or electricity) using water as fuel, manufacturing new elements and isotopes from cheap materials, converting radioactive materials (waste) into stable condition, desalinating sea water to produce fresh water without any salted residuals, transmutation of poisonous materials into inert materials, municipal waste recycling, motors of higher power at lower consumption of electricity, special converters and transformers, earthquake prediction, New Approach Towards Understanding Origination of Matter and Energy in Universe from vacuum, many technologies for the nuclear energy industry that will be the top energy by 2050 according to EDF, and much more.

There are many technologies/projects in need of investment that are on the market, some that are about to enter in the market and some that need more years of investigation. At any time it can be arranged a meeting in the several prestigious institutions in Moscow or the Officials/scientists can go to Japan to make the presentations.

Then there is a fifth group based in Japan that is planning to build a major university/research and martial arts center north of Tokyo. This group plans to transform the Japanese right/wing and yakuza establishment into a benevolent society that will always act in defense of the weak and the down-trodden. The Chinese have already agreed to help this group.

Of course the new financial system has to be put fully online for all of these groups to get started with their plans. This in return requires the dismantling of the Federal Reserve Board and the corrupt Washington D.C. corporation.

On this end we are hearing from multiple sources that a special Interpol force in the US has begun arresting or killing all those who are still trying to revive the old financial system. This may have to do with why Obama is looking so old and haggard after his “holiday” in Hawaii.

There are several key settlement dates in January that may finally force the corporate propaganda media in the West to start revealing the truth. We will know the turning point has been reached when the brainwashed sector of Western society is finally told the truth by their corporate overlords. The arrest or judicial killing of CIA Director Panetta would be a very good indication of change.

Also, we need to see what happens when the financial markets open for the new calendar year. A member of the British royal family says there is a strong chance a new currency to replace the US dollar may be announced as early as January 6th.

The Black Dragon Society has also made the following proposals to the Japanese government and the Chinese Red and Green. First we support the Chinese plan to create an entirely new United Nations and base it in Laos. Second we believe that a Chinese dominated replacement for the World Bank should be set up in Hong Kong. In parallel to that, we propose setting up a G8-dominated world economic planning agency in Osaka. After that, all US dollars held outside of the US should be renamed Hong Kong dollars (or whatever) and put under the control of these three institutions.

Existing institutions like the World Bank and the BIS can continue their operations but they will have to start generating their own savings and become self-financing if they are to survive.

The various commodities exchanges and stock markets will also have to thoroughly audited and the systematic fraud they have allowed to take place needs to be exposed. This process has already begun with the Chinese refusing to honor fraudulent contracts with various US and European based financial institutions.

It is also important to set up a South African style truth and reconciliation committee to begin the process of uncovering the secret government that has been manipulating humanity for centuries. Much of our history and even our science is going to have to be rewritten and retold.

In any case, we believe the great global turning point many predict will happen in 2012 will actually begin this year. We are headed into uncharted waters but the prospects are bright indeed.

And also from...

Other wonderful events that may have nothing to do with Obama have apparently just happened.

According to very good sources I am in contact with, as of October 14-15th, there was a stunning new move made by China, on a full-scale international level, involving the governments of every country in the world.

This move sent terrified US and European leaders and insiders rushing over to Shanghai, begging the Chinese not to continue down this road.

However, China's plan appears to have been incredibly well-designed, with all the classic elements of Sun-Tzu's "Art of War."

It appears that it is now too late for this plan to be stopped.

China has just made it's "kill-shot" move, and they may well have saved the world by doing so.

Apparently no one has been killed in this process, but when I correlate what I'm hearing with what Fulford has said, it does appear that China will push for an international truth tribunal -- though they will apparently not be seeking the death penalty.

More importantly, by breaking down the corruption of the international financial system, China and her BRIC allies (Brazil, Russia, India, China -- also Argentina and others) can take a leading role in restoring prosperity on this planet.

The saddest thing, which I have heard from many top insiders, is that we already have the capability to desalinate ocean water, green the deserts, eliminate poverty, homelessness, hunger, disease and sickness -- and give everyone a significantly improved lifestyle.

Contrary to the widely-held insider belief that doing this would create a massive "population bomb" that would destroy the planet, the real-world data shows that population growth significantly decreases once people are allowed to develop.

They can even reach zero population growth, as in Japan. These cultures no longer need to have multiple children to ensure their own survival.

Teleportation, time travel, gravity shielding, free energy, matter synthesis, near-instant healing, earthquake and volcano alleviation, stabilizing the Earth's axis -- all this and more is already within our grasp.

The reason why the elite have refused to let these technologies emerge is they fear everyone would become a couch potato -- and their control over this planet would be forever lost.

Nonetheless, it is clear that any attempts to throw off China's plan will be met with significant lethal force.

You may remember hearing that in 2009, the top insider bankers in the US had to pay China in gold bars for their own bad debts, as an aftermath of the financial fallout from 2008 -- where many derivatives funds like Lehman Brothers spontaneously imploded.

This collapse, according to Fulford, was China's doing: "Why should we be paying you to kill us?"

Once the devastated bankers were finally forced to pay up, after a prolonged period of hemming and hawing, China drilled into the "Good Delivery" bars.

They were made of tungsten, with only a thin layer of gold electroplated on the outside! Completely fake!

This appears to have been when China's plan really kicked into high gear -- but it took some time to develop.

According to Fulford, the international fiscal year ends as of September 30th. This year, the big players covertly running the US and other countries were again unable to pay their debts.

This was the final event that apparently led to the implementation of China's plan.

Fulford has been alluding to something like this in the works from China for some time now.

As others may also have felt, it has been almost exasperating to read his paid blog and hear him tease about something big that China was doing, over and over again -- but then not say what it was, because it was important that he not screw it up or stop it from happening.

With all the reports I'm hearing, I am almost certain that this is what he was talking about -- and they just flipped the switch.

I apologize. I am not stupid. I am definitely not going to get specific, as I do not want to thwart this effort.

However, from what I have heard, the plan was so well-executed I highly doubt there is much that could stop it at this point.

If it works as intended, there should be a time where it can be discussed openly and in detail.

The black-ops community is now literally running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Everyone is telling me the same thing.

It's become chaos. Factions are breaking up. Former allies are now enemies. Former enemies are now friends. Single factions are now fragmenting into multiple, opposing elements.

Fulford has been saying for some time that "One Million Satanists," i.e. members of the Luciferian Illuminati, are seeking amnesty and refuge in various countries -- but no one is willing to shelter them. This also seems centrally related to what I am hearing.

The public summary of Fulford's paid blog from last Sunday -- October 18th -- reads as follows (emphasis added):

"The royal families of the West and the secret Illuminati royalty are planning an emergency summit meeting in Vienna, Austria, next month in order to come up with a strategy to save their plan for a New World Order fascist world government, according to a senior CIA source and a member of the Rothschild family.

The summit is being called because a global police and intelligence operation is closing in on their leadership with multiple investigations on many levels.

It is hard to see how the Bilderbergers, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral commission and their secret rulers are going to escape these probes unless they agree to surrender and promise to appear before a South African style truth and reconciliation committee."

I am also told that certain human ET groups are working behind the scenes, here on the ground, to help ensure various plans succeed. This may include China's plan, though there are others going on as well for similar purposes.

We may never publicly know the details of the ETs' involvement in all of this, unfortunately -- at least not in the beginning.

Major announcements due for mid-November, legal action against illuminati possible this week Posted by benjamin October 25, 2010
Events are starting to unfold at an accelerating pace as the ancient “New World Order” continues its collapse. First of all, sources in Japanese military intelligence say there will be “huge announcements” sometime in mid-November, no doubt linked in part to the November 11th G20 meeting in Korea. The other big move is that the $1 trillion lawsuit involving Daniele Dal Bosco, the P2 Freemason lodge, the Davos forum and the UN will be backed by the Pentagon and will become public news possibly as soon as this week. We have also confirmed that all members of the Bilderberger, the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations have been individually warned and are “very scared.” There is very little detail about the November announcements available at present because a high level purge of the top ranks of the Satan worshippers is still underway, according to a dragon family representative. The Japanese military police also refused to provide more detail so, we will just have to wait and see. However, the Dragon family did say they were allied with “good aliens” who were horribly mistreated in the 1940’s and that they have been working on the current coup at a high level for a very long time. Hopefully the announcement will involve the release of suppressed technology. The Pentagon’s ambassador to the White Dragon Society has previously mentioned that according to the American Academy of Science that over 6,000 patents have been suppressed for “national security reasons” and that these patents will now be mostly made available to the general public. The Dragon family also says “we have incredible secret technology at our disposal.” We will just have to wait and see for more details. In a related move, a very senior pentagon official contacted the White Dragon Society last week to say the Pentagon was currently backing President Obama because Obama had begun a systematic purge of Khazarian Satanists from the US government. That means the talk of a temporary military government is on hold for the present. The Khazarians and some members of the Jewish lobby, for their part, have begun an intensive anti-Obama campaign. Obama is expected to receive nothing but negative publicity over the coming months. At the same time, he has become a high priority assassination target, according to multiple sources. The infighting in Washington is expected to intensify over the coming weeks as a powerful lobby will continue its push to replace Obama with Hillary Clinton. Clinton is said to be “desperately doing everything she can to make sure she is a part of the new financial system,” according to a top CIA source. On the more conventional news front, the current leaders of the planet are doing everything in their power to reform and put on a good face. Part of this is the carefully orchestrated Wikileaks campaign that seems to be aimed at showing the old system is capable of dealing with wrong-doings like torture and civilian killing by individual troops. The old order is also clearly willing to throw a few of their own, like Tony Blair, under the bus in an attempt to cleanse their image. The big questions is if Wikileaks is the real deal, then why have they not published “secret documents” about what really happened on 911? The more significant move was to shift the balance of power at the IMF away from Europe. The new IMF voting structure increases representation for Brazil, China, India, Turkey and other developing countries. The voting structure is now such that Japan has the casting vote in-between Western and non-Western interests at the IMF. CLIP

Beijing promises growth from grassroots (Oct 19, 2010) THIS IS BIG!
BEIJING: China must lift the incomes and spending power of hundreds of millions of farmers and workers to keep the world's second-biggest economy from faltering on its ascent, the nation's leaders said on Monday. China's broad blueprint for releasing domestic wellsprings of growth by giving citizens better incomes, welfare and housing was issued by the ruling Communist Party's central committee, after a four-day meeting that settled on the nation's next fiveyear development plan starting in 2011. Over that time, the Chinese economy could grow by about 50% to $7.5 trillion, powering past Japan and moving closer to the biggest economy by far, the United States, government economists have forecast. But domestic rifts and inequalities could drag down China by fettering household demand and stirring unrest, officials fear. The party meeting urged them to maintain a "sense of peril". "Stick to making welfare and improving livelihoods the fundamental starting and end point for faster transformation of economic development," said the communique from the meeting, which was issued by state-run media. While the United States has pressed China to rebalance its economy by raising the value of the yuan, the meeting showed how focused Beijing is on domestic policies to coax growth away from exports. It did not mention the currency. The party leaders vowed more balanced income distribution, improved healthcare, and a stronger social welfare net so ordinary citizens feel more confident about spending savings. "We must persist in the strategy of expanding domestic demand and maintaining steady and relatively fast development," said the official statement from the meeting. "Accelerate the formation of a new pattern of economic growth driven by coordination of consumption, investment and exports." The parliament will approve the plan early next year, and the party announcement did not give specifics about growth targets and policies.

From Global Depression to Global Governance - The role of the corporate elites' secretive global think tanks (October 19, 2010)
We now stand at the edge of the global financial abyss of a ‘Great Global Debt Depression,’ where nations, mired in extreme debt, are beginning to implement ‘fiscal austerity’ measures to reduce their deficits, which will ultimately result in systematic global social genocide, as the middle classes vanish and the social foundations upon which our nations rest are swept away. How did we get here? Who brought us here? Where is this road leading? These are questions I will briefly attempt to answer. At the heart of the global political economy is the central banking system. Central banks are responsible for printing a nation’s currency and setting interest rates, thus determining the value of the currency. This should no doubt be the prerogative of a national government, however, central banks are of a particularly deceptive nature, in which while being imbued with governmental authority, they are in fact privately owned by the world’s major global banks, and are thus profit-seeking institutions. How do central banks make a profit? The answer is simple: how do all banks make a profit? Interest on debt. Loans are made, interest rates are set, and profits are made. It is a system of debt, imperial economics at its finest.

(...) The global economic crisis arose as a result of decades of global imperialism – known recently as ‘globalization’ – and the reckless growth of– speculation, derivatives and an explosion of debt. As the economic crisis spread, nations of the world, particularly the United States, bailed out the major banks (which should have been made to fail and crumble under their own corruption and greed), and now the West has essentially privatized profits for the banks, and socialized the risk. In other words, the nations bought the debt from the banks, and now the people have to pay for it. The people, however, are immersed in their own personal debt to such degrees that today, the average Canadian is $39,000 in debt, and students are graduating into a jobless market with tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars of student debt that they will never repay. Hence, we are now faced with a global debt crisis.

(...) Already, towns, cities, and states across America are resorting to drastic actions to reduce their debts, such as closing fire stations, scaling back trash collection, turning off street lights, ending bus services and public transportation, cutting back on library hours or closing them altogether, school districts cutting down the school day, week or year. Simultaneously, this is occurring with a dramatic increase in the rate of privatizations or “public-private partnerships” in which even libraries are being privatized. No wonder then, that this month, the Managing Director of the IMF warned that America and Europe, in the midst of the worst jobs crisis since the Great Depression, face an “explosion of social unrest.” Just yesterday, Europe experienced a wave of mass protests and social unrest in opposition to ‘austerity measures’, with a general strike in Spain involving millions of people, and a march on the EU headquarters in Brussels of nearly 100,000 people. As social unrest spreads, governments will likely react – as we saw in the case of the G20 in Toronto – with oppressive police state measures. Here, we see the true relevance of the emergence of ‘Homeland Security States’, designed not to protect people from terrorists, but to protect the powerful from the people.

“Crisis is an Opportunity”: Engineering a Global Depression to Create a Global Government (October 26, 2010)
Problem, Reaction, Solution: “Crisis is an Opportunity” - In May of 2010, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Managing Director of the IMF, stated that, “crisis is an opportunity,” and called for “a new global currency issued by a global central bank, with robust governance and institutional features,” and that the “global central bank could also serve as a lender of last resort.” However, he stated, “I fear we are still very far from that level of global collaboration.” Well, perhaps not so far as it might seem. The notion of global governance has taken an evolutionary path to the present day, with the principle global political and economic actors and institutions incrementally constructing the apparatus of a global government. In the modern world, global governance is an inter-lapping, intersecting, and intertwined web of international organizations, think tanks, multinational corporations, nations, NGOs, philanthropic foundations, military alliances, intelligence agencies, banks and interest groups. Globalization – a term which was popularized in the late 1980s to refer to the global spread of multinational corporations – has laid the principle ideological and institutional foundations for this process. Global social, economic and political integration do not occur at an equal pace; rather, economic integration and governance on a global level has and will continue to be ahead of the other sectors of human social interaction, in both the pace and degree of integration. In short, global economic governance will set the pace for social and political global governance to follow.

(...) The process of globalization has firmly established a globally integrated economic system, and now the global economic crisis is facilitating the implementation of global economic governance: to create the economic apparatus of a global government, including a global central bank and a global currency. This process is exponentially accelerated through economic crises, which create the need, desire, urgency and means of establishing a structure of global economic governance, purportedly under the guise of “preventing economic crises” and “maintaining” the global economy. The same institutions and actors responsible for creating the crisis, are then given the job of determining the solution, and are then given the power and means of implementing it: problem, reaction, solution. They create a problem to incur a particular reaction for which they then propose a predetermined solution. When pressure needs to be applied to individual states that are not following dictates of the institutions of global governance, the market is turned against them in a barrage of economic warfare, often in the form of currency speculation and derivatives trading. The result of this economic warfare against a nation is that it must then turn to these same global institutions to come to its rescue: problem, reaction, solution. The global economic crisis, really having only just begun, will in years to come spiral into a Great Global Debt Depression, plunging the entire world into the greatest economic catastrophe ever known. This will be the ultimate catalyst, the most pervasive crisis, and most commanding ‘opportunity’ to implement the formation of a global government. CLIP - NOTE FROM JEAN: VERY detailed and comprehensive article worth reading - despite its length! The entire Bilderberg cabal's economic shenanigans are clearly exposed! Here is the conclusion...

Herman Von Rompuy became President of the European Union in 2009, a new position established by the Lisbon Treaty passed the same year. Rompuy was selected as President following his attendance at a meeting of the Bilderberg Group. Shortly after being given the position, Von Rompuy gave a speech in which he declared that 2009 is “the first year of global governance.”As Denis Healey, a founding member and former member of the Steering Committee of the Bilderberg Group for over 30 years, stated in 2001, “To say we were striving for a one-world government is exaggerated, but not wholly unfair. Those of us in Bilderberg felt we couldn't go on forever fighting one another for nothing and killing people and rendering millions homeless. So we felt that a single community throughout the world would be a good thing.”

So while institutions and organizations of global governance continue to grant themselves more power and expand their control and authority over the world, the people of the world must wake up to this process and seek to stem and stall its advancement. A global government would represent the people of the world even less than they are already not represented through their national governments. Institutions of global governance are totally unaccountable to the people, totally undemocratic, and are inherently totalitarian. As Gideon Rachman wrote for the Financial Times in December of 2008, “for the first time in my life, I think the formation of some sort of world government is plausible.” While articulating the need for a global government, modeling it on the European Union “going global,” he examined the setbacks that the EU had in this process, suggesting the same is likely in the process for global government. Specifically, he identified that whenever the people were involved in the process, they would act to stall or reject the process of integration. Thus, Rachman concluded, the European Union “has progressed fastest when far-reaching deals have been agreed by technocrats and politicians – and then pushed through without direct reference to the voters. International governance tends to be effective, only when it is anti-democratic.” In other words, if we want global governance, we must kill democracy in the process.

What this implies then, is that the people have the potential to prevent this process from taking place, but only if they become directly involved in rejecting it. This means that people’s movements need to stop recognizing the legitimacy of these international organizations and institutions, complaining only that they are not included in discussions, and instead demand that they be dismantled altogether in favour of forming new governance arrangements – political, economic and social – that actively represent and empower the people over the entrenched powers. This is no simple task, in fact, it is likely the greatest, most monumental and challenging task that has ever faced humanity. So it seems necessary that the people not waste their time, not waste their votes, voices, or ideas, and work together to promote true progressive and humane change. There is hope in humanity yet, but so long as we allow the powerful to accumulate more power for themselves, we cannot expect things to get better for the majority. We must take advantage of our freedoms in order to fight for and preserve them. We can either be free thinkers, directing the course of our own lives, or we can be slaves to bankers. - CHECK ALSO: ILLUMICORP - Part 1 - If the Illuminati were to make an initiation video, it may look a little like this.

Imminent Big Bank Death Spiral (27 October 2010)
The mortgage & foreclosure scandal runs so deep that ordinary observers can conclude the US financial foundation is laced with a cancer detectable by ordinary people. The metastasis is visible from the distribution of mortgage bonds into the commercial paper market, money market funds, the bank balance sheets, pension funds under management, foreign central banks, and countless financial funds across the globe. Some primary features of the cancerous tissue material are mortgage bond fraud, major securities violations, absent linkage to property title, income tax evasion, forged foreclosure documents, duplicate property linkage to single mortgage bonds, NINJA (no income, no job or assets) loans to unqualified buyers, and more. In fact, more is revealed it seeems each passing week toward additional facie to high level and systemic fraud. The world is watching. The growing international reaction will be amplified demand for Gold, from recognition that the USDollar & USEconomy have RICO racketeering components extending to Wall Street banks and Fannie Mae mortgage repositories. The centerpiece question, when the US bond fraud is coupled with European sovereign debt distress, comes down to WHAT IS MONEY? The answer is Gold & Silver and not much of anything else. Other assets like crude oil or farmland are effective hedges against tainted money, but when they contain debt tethers, they too are vulnerable. China commerce minister says dollar printing hurting China (Oct 26, 2010)
BEIJING,(Reuters) - Dollar issuance by the United States is "out of control", leading to an inflation assault on China, the Chinese commerce minister said in comments reported on Tuesday.Chen Deming, speaking at a trade fair in southern China, said that exporters had done a good job of preparing themselves for exchange rate changes as well as rising labour costs, but were suddenly confronted with new challenges."Because the United States' issuance of dollars is out of control and international commodity prices are continuing to rise, China is being attacked by imported inflation. The uncertainties of this are causing firms big problems," Chen was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua news agency. Chinese officials have criticised U.S. monetary policy as being too loose before, but rarely in such explicit language. At the G20 meeting in South Korea which ended on Saturday, Chinese Finance Minister Xie Xuren said that issuers of major reserve currencies -- code for the United States -- must follow responsible economic policies. Along with posing an inflationary risk, a weak dollar also places appreciation pressure on China's yuan since its value is so closely tied to the U.S. currency. CLIP

The scary actual U.S. government debt

OTTAWA - From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

Boston University economist Laurence Kotlikoff says U.S. government debt is not $13.5-trillion (U.S.), which is 60 per cent of current gross domestic product, as global investors and American taxpayers think, but rather 14-fold higher: $200-trillion - 840 per cent of current GDP. "Let's get real," Prof. Kotlikoff says. "The U.S. is bankrupt."

Writing in the September issue of Finance and Development, a journal of the International Monetary Fund, Prof. Kotlikoff says the IMF itself has quietly confirmed that the U.S. is in terrible fiscal trouble - far worse than the Washington-based lender of last resort has previously acknowledged. "The U.S. fiscal gap is huge," the IMF asserted in a June report. "Closing the fiscal gap requires a permanent annual fiscal adjustment equal to about 14 per cent of U.S. GDP."

This sum is equal to all current U.S. federal taxes combined. The consequences of the IMF's fiscal fix, a doubling of federal taxes in perpetuity, would be appalling - and possibly worse than appalling.

Prof. Kotlikoff says: "The IMF is saying that, to close this fiscal gap [by taxation], would require an immediate and permanent doubling of our personal income taxes, our corporate taxes and all other federal taxes.

"America's fiscal gap is enormous - so massive that closing it appears impossible without immediate and radical reforms to its health care, tax and Social Security systems - as well as military and other discretionary spending cuts."

He cites earlier calculations by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) that concluded that the United States would need to increase tax revenue by 12 percentage points of GDP to bring revenue into line with spending commitments. But the CBO calculations assumed that the growth of government programs (including Medicare) would be cut by one-third in the short term and by two-thirds in the long term. This assumption, Prof. Kotlikoff notes, is politically implausible - if not politically impossible.

One way or another, the fiscal gap must be closed. If not, the country's spending will forever exceed its revenue growth, and no one's real debt can increase faster than his real income forever.

Prof. Kotlikoff uses "fiscal gap," not the accumulation of deficits, to define public debt. The fiscal gap is the difference between a government's projected revenue (expressed in today's dollar value) and its projected spending (also expressed in today's dollar value). By this measure, the United States is in worse shape than Greece.

Prof. Kotlikoff is a noted economist. He is a research associate at the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research. He is a former senior economist with then-president Ronald Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers. He has served as a consultant with governments around the world. He is the author (or co-author) of 14 books: Jimmy Stewart Is Dead (2010), his most recent book, explains his recommendations for reform.

He says the U.S. cannot end its fiscal crisis by increasing taxes. He opposes further stimulus spending because it will simply increase the debt. But he does suggest reforms that would help - most of which would require a significant withering away of the state. He proposes that the government give every person an annual voucher for health care, provided that the total cost not exceed 10 per cent of GDP. (U.S. health care now consumes 16 per cent of GDP.) He suggests the replacement of all current federal taxes with a single consumption tax of 18 per cent. He calls for government-sponsored personal retirement accounts, with the government making contributions only for the poor, the unemployed and people with disabilities.

Without drastic reform, Prof. Kotlikoff says, the only alternative would be a massive printing of money by the U.S. Treasury - and hyperinflation.

As former president Bill Clinton once prematurely said, the era of big government is over. In the coming years, the U.S. will almost certainly be compelled to deconstruct its welfare state.

Prof. Kotlikoff doesn't trust government accounting, or government regulation. The official vocabulary (deficit, debt, transfer payment, tax, borrowing), he says, is vulnerable to official manipulation and off-the-books deceit. He calls it "Enron accounting." He also calls it a lie. Here is an economist who speaks plainly, as the legendary straight-shooting film star Jimmy Stewart did for an earlier generation.

But Prof. Kotlikoff's economic genre isn't the Western. It's the horror story - "and scarier," one reviewer of his book suggests, than Stephen King.

Mr Kotlikoff -a Reagan administration economist, no less- is telling us, We won!. The effective strategy of Reagan, Thatcher, Bush, and Bush has been to bankrupt society so that society can't afford the social justice apparatus that is anathema to them. The solution to today's massive public indebtedness is to shift socially unproductive spending, such as the massive US defence outlays, towards things that actually help people and advance the value of goods and services in the economy. Along with this will come inflation as a way of devaluing the outstanding debt. This will mean the erosion of assets of that generation that was so politically blind that they let this happen.

As for the point of the article, anyone with any interest in global money matters should already have knowledge of the unfunded liabilities the US is on the hook for. But the fact is, those liabilities are promises to the American people and will never be realized. Therefore, the real question is... what will be the reaction of the citizens of the US when, in a few years, they're told Medicaid, Social Security and Bush's Pharmacaid program (to name a few) are being dissolved, as they can no longer be funded? Afterall, it would be sacrilegious to actually cut military spending (for example). So will there be civil unrest? I'd put a few fiat Treasury notes on it. You can't tell me those in Government, business, banking and anyone with half a brain don't see the system is crumbling... but hey, go watch some sports and forget about it... everything's cool... nothing to see here... move on.

The biggest problem the US has with it's economy is they as a people have been brain washed into thinking they are free. The United States of American was built on the basis of a master/slave ideology and it still operates on the same system to day. As long as 1% of the population is allowed to control 90% of the economy things will not change. If they get rid of the republican war hawks, cut their military spending down to 20% of budget rather 60% of budget and realize that money should be a slave of the people not the other way around, they might be able to turn their fiscal Titanic around. Other wise my freedom loving Canadians, find yourselves a life boat.

Historically governments in such shape have simply repudiated their debts. Ironically, with the $US the world's reserve currency, this is easier than has occurred with other nations (like Argentina a decade ago).

Repudiation can occur without hyperinflation, and frankly, the warnings here of hyperinflation are overblown, as hyperinflation has rarely occurred and only with complete mismanagement of the actual printing press, something that cannot occur due to the Fed and the Treasury being structurally separate entities. Substantial inflation, yes, but not hyperinflation. Very high inflation would actually help a non-saving country like the US and hurt the Asian saving economies with so much of their national holdings being US T-Bills and other bonds.

It is politically impossible that a disappearing middle class would ever vote to dismantle its entitlements even further. People want to see their current tax $ go to current programs and not to past debt payments. Nations can, and do, go bankrupt, and they do so by simply stopping payment to those foolish anyone outside their borders who bought bonds. The Chinese lose in this scenario, which is about 15-20 years away.

New Figures Detail Depth Of Unemployment Misery, Lower Earnings For All But Super Wealthy (with VIDEO)

October 25, 2010

One out of every 34 Americans who earned wages in 2008 earned absolutely nothing -- not one cent -- in 2009.

The stunning figure was released earlier this month by the Social Security Administration, but apparently went unreported until it appeared today on in a column by Pulitzer Prize-winning tax reporter David Cay Johnston.

It's not just every 34th earner whose financial situation has been upended by the financial crisis. Average wages, median wages, and total wages have all declined -- except at the very top, where they leaped dramatically, increasing five-fold.

Johnston writes that while the number of Americans earning more than $50 million fell from 131 in 2008 to 74 in 2009, those that remained at the top increased their income from an average of $91.2 million in 2008 to almost $519 million.

The wealth is astounding, says Johnston. "That's nearly $10 million in weekly pay!... These 74 people made as much as the 19 million lowest-paid people in America, who constitute one in every eight workers."

Johston sees the depressing figures as a result of government tax policies maintained by politicians with an eye on re-election, not good government:

It is the latest, and in this case quite dramatic, evidence that our economic policies in Washington are undermining the nation as a whole. We have created a tax system that changes continually as politicians manipulate it to extract campaign donations. We have enabled ''free trade'' that is nothing of the sort, but rather tax-subsidized mechanisms that encourage American manufacturers to close their domestic factories, fire workers, and then use cheap labor in China for products they send right back to the United States. This has created enormous downward pressure on wages, and not just for factory workers.

Combined with government policies that have reduced the share of private-sector workers in unions by more than two-thirds -- while our competitors in Canada, Europe, and Japan continue to have highly unionized workforces -- the net effect has been disastrous for the vast majority of American workers. And of course, less money earned from labor translates into less money to finance the United States of America.

Johnston's assertions appear to be supported by a recent Senate vote.

In September, Senate Republicans along with a handful of Democrats, partnered to defeat the Creating American Jobs and Ending Offshoring Act, a bill that would have raised taxes on companies that send jobs abroad and benefited companies that bring jobs back to American soil.

The notion that it's good business for American corporations to send jobs overseas has been championed by U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation's biggest and most powerful business lobby.

The tabulations, staggering as they may be, are only half of the picture.

Behind the official 9.6 percent unemployment rate (which is probably somewhere closer to 22 percent), are the stories of millions of individuals who are struggling to get by or are coming to terms with a future of lower wages and a life with less.

"60 Minutes" profiled the underemployed and unemployed on Sunday in a piece titled "The 99ers."

Among the most troubling stories are those of a financial analyst who has been unemployed for two years and is now living in a stranger's attic and a former office manager who now collects bottles and cans to get by.

Foreclosing on hope, many Americans worry about their ability to pay mortgage or rent (Oct 27, 2010 radio interview)
With all of the recent economic doom and gloom it’s hard to remember that the depths of the recession, and not coincidentally the “bottoming out” of the housing market (which of course helped to touch off the recession and resulting financial crisis) was back in 2008. But even during those darkest days Americans seemed to retain some sense of hope that they could make their next mortgage or rent payment—now a poll out by the Washington Post today found that 53% of respondents said they were “very concerned” or “somewhat concerned” about having the money to make their monthly payment. It’s probably not surprising that people are worried about having enough money to make bills, but what is especially noteworthy is the number of respondents who were in favor of a national moratorium on foreclosures, 52%. The moratorium is tricky for both political and economic reasons but the damage to the broader economy, and the psychological impact of worrying about paying your next bill, is undeniable.

QE2 risks currency wars and the end of dollar hegemony

As the US Federal Reserve meets today to decide whether its next blast of quantitative easing should be $1 trillion or a more cautious $500bn, it does so knowing that China and the emerging world view the policy as an attempt to drive down the dollar.

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, 01 Nov 2010

QE2 risks currency wars and the end of dollar hegemony Photo: AFP

The Fed's "QE2" risks accelerating the demise of the dollar-based currency system, perhaps leading to an unstable tripod with the euro and yuan, or a hybrid gold standard, or a multi-metal "bancor" along lines proposed by John Maynard Keynes in the 1940s.

China's commerce ministry fired an irate broadside against Washington on Monday. "The continued and drastic US dollar depreciation recently has led countries including Japan, South Korea, and Thailand to intervene in the currency market, intensifying a 'currency war'. In the mid-term, the US dollar will continue to weaken and gaming between major currencies will escalate," it said.

David Bloom, currency chief at HSBC, said the root problem is lack of underlying demand in the global economy, leaving Western economies trapped near stalling speed. "There are no policy levers left. Countries are having to tighten fiscal policy, and interest rates are already near zero. The last resort is a weaker currency, so everybody is trying to do it," he said.

Pious words from G20 summit of finance ministers last month calling for the world to "refrain" from pursuing trade advantage through devaluation seem most honoured in the breach.

Taiwan intervened on Monday to cap the rise of its currency, while Korea's central bank chief said his country is eyeing capital controls as part of its "toolkit" to stem the flood of Fed-created money leaking out of the US and sloshing into Asia. Brazil has just imposed a 2pc tax on inflows into both bonds and equities - understandably, since the real has risen by 35pc against the dollar this year and the country has a current account deficit.

"It is becoming harder to mop up the liquidity flowing into these countries," said Neil Mellor, of the Bank of New York Mellon. "We fully expect more central banks to impose capital controls over the next couple of months. That is the world we live in," he said. Globalisation is unravelling before our eyes.

Each case is different. For the 40-odd countries pegged to the dollar or closely linked by a "dirty float", the Fed's lax policy is causing havoc. They are importing a monetary policy that is far too loose for the needs of fast-growing economies. What was intended to be an anchor of stability has become a danger.

Hong Kong's dollar peg, dating back to the 1960s, makes it almost impossible to check a wild credit boom. House prices have risen 50pc since January 2009, despite draconian curbs on mortgages. Barclays Capital said Hong Kong may switch to a yuan peg within two years.

Mr Bloom said these countries are under mounting pressure to break free from the dollar. "They are all asking themselves whether these pegs are a relic of the past," he said.

China faces a variant of the problem with its mixed currency basket, a sort of "crawling peg". Commerce minister Chen Deming said last week that US dollar issuance is "out of control". It is causing a surge of imported inflation in China.

Critics in the US Congress say China could solve that particular problem very quickly by letting the yuan rise enough to bring the country's $180bn trade surplus into balance.

They say the strategy of holding down the yuan to underpin China's export-led model is the real source of galloping wage and price inflation on China's eastern seaboard. The central bank has accumulated $2.5 trillion of foreign bonds but lacks the sophisticated instruments to "sterilise" these purchases and stem inflationary "blow-back".

But whatever the rights and wrongs of the argument, the reality is that a chorus of Chinese officials and advisers is demanding that China switch reserves into gold or forms of oil. As this anti-dollar revolt gathers momentum worldwide, the US risks losing its "exorbitant privilege" of currency hegemony - to use the term of Charles de Gaulle.

The innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of Fed policy are poor countries such as India, where primary goods make up 60pc of the price index and food inflation is now running at 14pc. It is hard to gauge the impact of a falling dollar on commodities, but the pattern in mid-2008 was that it led to oil, metal, and grain price rises with multiple leverage. The core victims were the poorest food-importing countries in Africa and South Asia. Tell them that QE2 brings good news.

So the question that Ben Bernanke and his colleagues should ask themselves is whether they have thought through the global ramifications of their actions, and how the strategic consequences might rebound against America itself.

Relates article:

That's right folks, it's all about the dollar ($) in the financial markets these days, and the $ is all about its accelerating debasement at the hands of the Fed. This of course must be rubber stamped by the politicians to be considered 'legal', however it should be understood there's nothing legal about this as the destruction of the $ via fiat declaration is fundamentally unconstitutional. Fiat currencies all fail in the end due to corruption and deceit, and the $ will be no exception, first loosing it's purchasing power, now well underway, and then its status as the world's reserve currency, now coming into focus, which will collapse the US into a banana republic. So, for these reasons the $ is falling. And with foreclosuregate now on deck to provide justification, acceleration in the $'s debasement rate can be justified by the plutocrats, meaning the $'s future is fait accompli. This is of course why gold and silver keep pushing higher, as alternate currencies and a store of wealth. CLIP

Biggest Document Leak in History Exposes Real War

by Rachel Oldroyd, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism -- 21 October 2010

Twelve weeks ago the Bureau of Investigative Journalism was given access to the biggest leak of military documents in history.

These documents formed a database of nearly 400,000 military logs recorded over six years of the Iraq war and covering the years 2004 to 2009.

There are over 37 million words used to recount military significant actions that took place across the entire country. This material provides an unrivalled portrait of one of the most controversial wars of the modern age.

For the first time the files reveal just how much the American military detailed the escalating violence in Iraq, and how this contrasts markedly to what the politicians said in public. This is the story behind the pronouncements – the uncensored detail Washington did not want us to know.

Key findings

The data reveals how hundreds of civilians were killed by coalition forces in unreported events.
There are numerous claims of prison abuse by coalition forces even after the Abu Ghraib scandal. The files also paint a disturbing portrait of widespread torture in Iraqi detention facilities.

As the war progresses the documents record a descent into chaos and horror as the occupation sparked civil war. In case after case, the logs record thousands of bodies, many brutally tortured, dumped on the streets of Iraq.

Through these reports we see, in military snapshots, the full impact the war had on Iraqis – men, women and children. The sheer scale of the deaths, detentions and violence is laid bare for the first time.

About the logs

The files were each recorded by soldiers operating on the ground and detail significant events. They are known as “SIGACTS”.

At the time each report was classified as “Secret” but the information contained is no longer militarily sensitive. In order to protect people mentioned in the reports the Bureau has removed all names and detailed grid references from the documents published on this site.

The files, leaked to the whistleblowers’ website Wikileaks, were made available to a select group of media outlets, including the Bureau, the Guardian, the New York Times, the German weekly Der Spiegel and French newspaper Le Monde.

Iraq Body Count, the agency that has been collating evidence of Iraq’s casualty numbers for many years, was also given access to the data.

Others involved include Sweden’s SVT and public interest lawyers.

The Bureau has made documentaries based on our findings for Dispatches and Al Jazeera English and Arabic.

Official response

We offered the United States Department of Defense the right to reply to our findings. They issued a statement which can be read here.

The paper trail now proves that we have become them. What we've fought against is what we have become. What we used to abhor is what we now embrace. What used to disgust us has become our dinner table joke.
The DOD is correct about one thing only. Nobody wants to know. Ignorance is bliss.

What must we the people do to hold the pentagon accountable--it is not enough that they send out this national security note to counter evidence of war crimes & crimes against humanity. Surely we can all together demand and get more accountability?

The Pentagon? They're not the only ones who need to be held accountable. Pretty much anyone who was in the Bush administration including the two principles as well as all PNAC neo-cons have blood dripping from their hands.

We have not become THEM. We were THEM before we ever went to Iraq. We attacked a country that never attacked us and all so that our richest oil magnates could get richer. Anyone that believes anything else is not playing with a full deck or is willfully ignorant of the facts!

WikiLeaks' Iraq War Logs: Iraqi Deaths Higher Than U.S. Count (October 23, 2010)
WASHINGTON - Military documents laid bare in the biggest leak of secret information in U.S. history suggest that far more Iraqis died than previously acknowledged during the years of sectarian bloodletting and criminal violence unleashed by the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. The accounts of civilian deaths among nearly 400,000 purported Iraq war logs released Friday by the WikiLeaks website include deaths unknown or unreported before now - as many as 15,000 by the count of one independent research group. The field reports from U.S. forces and intelligence officers also indicate U.S. forces often failed to follow up on credible evidence that Iraqi forces mistreated, tortured and killed their captives as they battled a violent insurgency. The war logs were made public in defiance of Pentagon insistence that the action puts the lives of U.S. troops and their military partners at risk. Although the documents appear to be authentic, their origin could not be independently confirmed, and WikiLeaks declined to offer any details about them. The 391,831 documents date from the start of 2004 to Jan. 1, 2010, providing a ground-level view of the war written mostly by low-ranking officers in the field. The dry reports, full of military jargon and acronyms, were meant to catalog "significant actions" over six years of heavy U.S. and allied military presence in Iraq. The Pentagon has previously declined to confirm the authenticity of WikiLeaks-released records, but it has employed more than 100 U.S. analysts to review what was previously released and has never indicated that any past WikiLeaks releases were inaccurate. At a news conference in London on Saturday, WikiLeaks said it would soon publish 15,000 additional secret Afghan war documents. The group has already published some 77,000 U.S. intelligence reports about the war in Afghanistan in addition to the almost 400,000 alleged secret U.S. documents about the Iraq war. Casualty figures in the U.S.-led war in Iraq have been hotly disputed because of the high political stakes in a conflict opposed by many countries and a large portion of the American public. Critics on each side of the divide accuse the other of manipulating the death toll to sway opinion.Iraq Body Count, a private British-based group that has tracked the number of Iraqi civilians killed since the war began, said it had analyzed the information and found 15,000 previously unreported deaths, which would raise its total from as many as 107,369 civilians to more than 122,000 civilians. It said most of the newly disclosed casualties included targeted assassinations, drive-by shootings, torture, executions and checkpoint killings. Frago 242: U.S. Complicity and Cover-Up of Iraq Torture Exposed

By Tom Burghardt - October 24, 2010

On October 22nd, the whistleblowing web site WikiLeaks released nearly 400,000 classified Iraq war documents, the largest leak of secret information in U.S. history.

Explosive revelations contained in the Iraq War Logs provided further evidence of the Pentagon's role in the systematic torture of Iraqi citizens by the U.S.-installed post-Saddam regime.

Indeed, multiple files document how U.S. officials failed to investigate thousands of cases of abuse, torture, rape and murder. Even innocent victims who were targets of kidnapping gangs, tortured for ransom by Iraqi police and soldiers operating out of the Interior Ministry, were "investigated" in a perfunctory manner that was little more than a cover-up.

Never mind that the Pentagon was fully cognizant of the nightmare playing out in Iraqi jails and prisons. Never mind the beatings with rifle butts and steel cables, the electrocutions, the flesh sliced with razors, the limbs hacked-off with chainsaws, the acid and chemical burns on battered corpses found along the roads, the eyes gouged out or the bones lacerated by the killers' tool of choice: the power drill.

Never mind that the death squads stood-up by American forces when the imperial adventure went wildly off the rails, were modeled on counterinsurgency methods pioneered in Vietnam (Operation Phoenix) and in South- and Central American during the 1970s and 1980s (Operation Condor) and that a "Salvador Option" was in play.

Never mind that the former commander of the U.S. Military Advisory Group in El Salvador, Col. James Steele, was the U.S. Embassy's point-man for setting up the Wolf Brigade or the Iraqi Interior Ministry's Special Police Commandos, notorious death squads that spread havoc and fear across Iraq's cities, towns and villages.

The killings and atrocities carried out by American and British clients were not simply random acts of mayhem initiated by sectarian gangs. On the contrary, though sectarianism and inter-ethnic hatred played a role in the slaughter, from a strategic and tactical point of view these were carefully calibrated acts designed to instill terror in a population utterly devastated by the U.S. invasion. As researcher Max Fuller reported five years ago:

In Iraq the war comes in two phases. The first phase is complete: the destruction of the existing state, which did not comply with the interests of British and American capital. The second phase consists of building a new state tied to those interests and smashing every dissenting sector of society. Openly, this involves applying the same sort of economic shock therapy that has done so much damage in swathes of the Third World and Eastern Europe. Covertly, it means intimidating, kidnapping and murdering opposition voices. ("For Iraq, 'The Salvador Option' Becomes Reality," Global Research, June 2, 2005)

Pentagon spokesperson Geoff Morrell denounced the leaks Friday evening, claiming the document dump was a "gift to terrorist organizations" that "put at risk the lives of our troops."

Playing down the significance the files lend to our understanding of the U.S. occupation, Morrell characterized them as "mundane." To the degree that they chronicle the nonchalance, indeed casual indifference towards Iraqi life displayed by U.S. forces, Morrell is correct: they are numbingly mundane and therein lies their horror.

The logs paint a grim picture of life after the "liberation" of the oil-rich nation. As with the organization's publication of some 75,000 files from their Afghan War Diary, 2004-2010, Friday's release provides stark evidence of U.S. complicity--and worse--in the systematic abuse of prisoners.

According to the War Logs, in 2006 an unnamed U.S. Special Operations Task Force was accused of blinding a prisoner in their custody; we read the following:

File after gruesome file reveals that even when confronted by serious evidence of abuse, the outcome was as sickening as it was inevitable: "No further investigation."

Called "Frago 242" reports for "fragmentary orders," the military files summarized thousands of events. When alleged abuse was committed by an Iraqi on another Iraqi, "only an initial report will be made ... No further investigation will be required unless directed by HQ." Those directives never arrived.

In fact, in a hypermilitarized society such as ours' where the "chain of command" is valued above basic human decency, never mind the rule of law, orders to be "discrete" always come from the top. Investigative journalist Robert Fisk recounted how during a November 2005 Pentagon press conference:

Peter Pace, the uninspiring chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is briefing journalists on how soldiers should react to the cruel treatment of prisoners, pointing out proudly that an American soldier's duty is to intervene if he sees evidence of torture. Then the camera moves to the far more sinister figure of Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who suddenly interrupts--almost in a mutter, and to Pace's consternation--"I don't think you mean they (American soldiers) have an obligation to physically stop it. It's to report it." ("The Shaming of America," The Independent on Sunday, October 24, 2010)

In essence, Frago 242 were the political means used by the U.S. administration to absolve themselves of command responsibility for the slaughter they had initiated with the March 2003 invasion. "We reported these horrors. What more do you want?"

Eager to pass security management onto their Iraqi puppets and cut their losses, the Pentagon and their political masters in Washington bypassed their obligations as the occupying power to ensure that human rights and the rule of law were respected by the clients whom they had installed to rule over the oil-rich nation. One file from 2006 tells us:

Two days later, additional torture victims were found in the Diyala Jail, and U.S. military personnel report:

Case closed.

WikiLeaks release prompted the UN's chief investigator on torture, Manfred Nowak, to demand that the Obama administration "order a full investigation of US forces' involvement in human rights abuses in Iraq," The Guardian reported.

Nowak said that if the files demonstrate clear violations of the UN Convention Against Torture then "the Obama administration had an obligation to investigate them."

A failure to investigate these serious charges "would be a failure of the Obama government to recognise its obligations under international law." There's little chance of that happening under our "forward looking" president.

On the contrary, as The Washington Post reported Sunday, that former CIA general counsel Jeffrey H. Smith, a current adviser to America's top spook Leon Panetta, wants to hang the messenger.

Smith said, "'without question' he thought that [WikiLeaks founder Julian] Assange could be prosecuted under the Espionage Act for possessing and sharing without authorization classified military information."

The Post informed us that Obama's Justice Department "is assisting the Defense Department in its investigation into the leaks to WikiLeaks. Though Smith said he did not know whether efforts were underway to gain custody [of Assange], he said, 'My supposition is that the Justice Department and Department of Defense are working very hard to see if they can get jurisdiction over him'."

As I discussed in late 2009, perhaps the Pentagon is working feverishly to do just that, deploying a Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) "Manhunting team" to run Assange and his organization to ground.

In Manhunting: Counter-Network Organization for Irregular Warfare, retired Lt. Col. George A. Crawford wrote in a 2009 monograph published by Joint Special Operations University, that "Manhunting--the deliberate concentration of national power to find, influence, capture, or when necessary kill an individual to disrupt a human network--has emerged as a key component of operations to counter irregular warfare adversaries in lieu of traditional state-on-state conflict measures."

And with an administration that asserts the right to kill anyone on the planet, including American citizens deemed "terrorists," it isn't a stretch to imagine the Pentagon resorting to a little "wet work" to silence Assange, thereby disrupting "a human network" viewed as deleterious impediment to Washington's imperial project.

After all, in Crawford's view, "Why drop a bomb when effects operations or a knife might do?"

Be that as it may, there was already sufficient evidence before Friday's release that American military personnel and outsourced "private security contractors" (armed mercenaries) had committed war crimes that warranted criminal investigations.

Even after 2004 revelations by investigative journalist Seymour Hersh in The New Yorker sparked the Abu Ghraib torture scandal, the files show that the systematic abuse and execution of prisoners, along with other serious war crimes, were standard operating procedure by the United States and their Iraqi "coalition" partners.

When Hersh's investigation first landed on the doorstep of the Bush White House, we were told that detainee abuse was the work of a "few bad apples" on the "night shift" at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.

While enlisted personnel were charged, tried, convicted and imprisoned for their crimes, senior Pentagon officials including Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and their top aides were exonerated by the White House and their accomplices in the corporate media.

"The truth is" Robert Fisk writes, "U.S. generals ... are furious not because secrecy has been breached, or because blood may be spilt, but because they have been caught out telling the lies we always knew they told."

Gitmo Guilty Plea Is a Sad Day for U.S. Rule of Law

By Daphne Eviatar - October 25, 2010

This morning I sat in a U.S. military commissions courtroom in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and watched the first child soldier charged by a Western nation since World War II plead guilty to crimes he was never seriously accused of. If the guilty plea of Omar Khadr this morning was a face-saving effort by the U.S. government, it was a sad day for the rule of law in the United States.

Omar Khadr is the 24-year-old Canadian who's spent a third of his life in U.S. custody without trial after being accused of helping his father's al Qaeda associates build improvised explosive devices when he was just 15. He was taken to Afghanistan from Canada by his father at the age of nine. The lone survivor of a 2002 U.S. assault on an Afghan compound, Khadr was accused of throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. soldier.

But as he entered his guilty plea this morning -- after the government agreed he'd serve just one more year at Guantanamo Bay, and an as-yet-unspecified number of years in Canada -- it was clear that prosecutors had taken the opportunity to throw the kitchen-sink-full of charges at him - including far more crimes than he'd even been charged with. Most importantly, Khadr pled guilty to killing two Afghan soldiers who accompanied U.S. forces in the 2002 assault on the compound. The government has never presented any evidence whatsoever that Khadr was responsible for that, and did not claim he was in its opening statement at trial.

That Khadr pled to this and the range of other charges that the government first unveiled today (details will not be available until the military commissions publicly release the stipulation signed by Khadr tomorrow) is hardly surprising. Ever since Judge Patrick Parrish ruled that Khadr's statements made to interrogators after he was threatened with gang-rape, coerced and possibly tortured were admissible, his defense was sure to be challenging. Although the government did not appear to have any forensic or eyewitness testimony to support its murder charge, government interrogators planned to testify that Khadr had willingly told them that he threw the grenade that killed Sergeant First Class Christopher Speer. Whether he said that because it was true, or because he was a scared and wounded 15-year-old expecting a quick release for telling his interrogators what they wanted to hear, we'll never know. (Khadr was shot multiple times and severely wounded in the firefight, which left him blind in one eye; he still has shrapnel in the other.)

Khadr's sentencing hearing begins tomorrow. Although the plea agreement contains a recommended sentence (news reports have said it's 8 years total) that deal will remain secret until the military commission sworn to act as a jury in this case issues its own sentence based on live testimony. The government will present witnesses to describe the effects of improvised explosive devices, and the testimony of Sergeant Speer's widow about her loss. Khadr's lawyers will put forth psychological and psychiatric experts to talk about the impacts of torture on him and likely about the ability of a 15-year-old youth to appreciate the wrongfulness of his acts, particularly when they were directed by the adults around him.

But all of this is hardly a vindication of the U.S. military commission system. After the plea was entered this morning, chief prosecutor Captain John Murphy told reporters that Khadr "stands convicted of being a murderer and also being an Al Qaeda terrorist" based on "his own words."

To be sure, Judge Parrish took pains today to ask Khadr if he was entering his guilty plea knowingly, and with full understanding of the consequences. Khadr nodded and quietly answered "yes." But in truth, he had little choice. If Khadr had gone to trial, he faced a potential life sentence from a military jury, who would hear how he "confessed" to the crimes in interrogations. He could have faced many more years in prison. What's more, the U.S. maintains the right to indefinitely detain him even if he was found not guilty. Ironically, all but one of the other four detainees found guilty in military commissions have gone home, while dozens of remaining Guantanamo detainees who have never been charged with a crime continue to languish.

For Khadr, then, today's guilty plea was probably the right choice. His Canadian lawyers will have grounds to challenge his sentence as unlawful as soon as he's transferred to Canada. (The "diplomatic notes" reached between the U.S. and Canadian governments that will likely allow his transfer after a year in U.S. custody are still secret but will be released with the plea agreement after the commission members recommend their sentence.)

For the U.S. government, the guilty plea was a way to save face. After all, the Obama administration knew that it was a political embarrassment for its first military commission trial to be of a child soldier - a contradiction of its obligations under international law to rehabilitate child soldiers rather than punish them. The administration also knew that the charges against Khadr were all legally dubious - invalid under international law and a violation of the ex post facto clause of the U.S. Constitution. Khadr's guilty plea allows them to rack up another "win" for the military commissions, pushing the total to a whopping five convictions in the last eight years. By contrast, U.S. civilian federal courts have convicted more than 400 terrorists in that same time period. This doesn't exactly tip the balance.

Still, no matter how you look at it, this plea makes a troubling statement about the United States' respect for the rule of law. Although as part of his plea agreement Omar Khadr has waived his right to appeal his conviction or to sue the United States for his confinement or treatment, a dark cloud continues to shadow this case. That cloud will continue to conceal the truth about Omar Khadr's treatment at the hands of his U.S. interrogators; and it will ensure that the validity of his conviction, and the integrity of the military commissions themselves, remain in doubt.

Leaked trade agreements and hidden dangers of S 510: Corporations plan to end normal farming

By M. Gardner - October 31, 2010

Canada's National Farmers Union wants the Canada-EU trade deal scrapped. US farmers face the same assault by agribusiness and the biotech industry under S 510.

Epoch Times noted: "Under provisions in CETA [Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement], using saved seed could result in a farmer's land, equipment, and crops being seized for alleged infringement of intellectual property rights attached to plant varieties owned by corporations such as Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta, and Bayer.

"It includes the freezing of bank accounts too, so you couldn't even defend yourself in court. And this is for alleged infringement," says NFU president Terry Boehm. …

"These are the most draconian measures possible and they would literally create a culture of fear in the farm population where, I think, that ultimately farmers would end up buying seeds every year for every acre just to avoid prosecution or the threat of prosecution."

The biotech industry is facing exposure of the health dangers of GMO/pesticide dependent crops, of attacks on scientists (even armed ones), and GMOs' poor crop performance across different crops, public outrage at no labeling of GMOs, media scorn at its humiliatingly poor science, and falling stock value. Is the industry now attempting an end run around all this, by trying to criminalize and thus end normal (organic) farming - its increasingly sought after, healthy, higher-performing competition?

Given the "draconian property rights enforcement measures" the biotech corporations wish put into effect through the Canada-EU free trade agreement, one might wonder.

US farmers face the same assault by their own government on behalf of agribusiness and the biotech industry. S 510, a "food safety" bill waiting for the Senate return, would put the US fully under the WTO and thus harmonize with CETA. It is replete with means to do to American farmers what the EU/Canada CETA plan would do to Canadian ones - and potentially more, including surreptitiously arranging to criminalize agricultural water, manure, essential farming equipment, and seed storage.

41 words inside S 510 would make the US subject to CETA.

"Nothing in this Act (or an amendment made by this Act) shall be construed in a manner inconsistent with the agreement establishing the World Trade Organization or any other treaty or international agreement to which the United States is a party."

The significance of those words in S 510 is that they would end the Uruguay Round Agreement Act of 1994, which put US sovereignty and US law under perfect protection. Under S 510, US law would become subservient to the WTO, a corporate organization. Votes in the US would not matter. The decisions on food, energy, health, resources, and US economic policy would be made the very corporations responsible for contaminating food, oil spills, dangerous drugs, theft of common resources, and destroying the economy.

The enforcement powers created by S 510 (assuming it resembles other "food safety" bills) would be unlimited and apply to everyone in the country who "holds" food (does anyone not?).

S 510, a "food safety" bill, would (using sections from other food safety bills) set up a corporate court outside the constitutional court system. The expectation is that it would be run by Monsanto, just as "food safety" at the FDA is now, with Monsanto involved at every level. It would exist without Congressional oversight, with unlimited and unspecified remedies, "in addition to, and not exclusive of, other remedies that may be available," and without judicial review over even "the validity and appropriateness of the order …"

That upturning of all sense (orders that don't have to be appropriate or valid) is a window into the extremity of power being sought by the corporations through S 510. That power would include total discretion to punish anyone they may wish. And in removing appropriateness and validity, their orders would not have to relate to food at all and could be used against anyone, applying any form of "remedy" they desire. Nothing whatever is excluded.

The merger of corporate and government power is defined as fascism.

"LIMITATION ON REVIEW- In a civil action under paragraph (1), the validity and appropriateness of the order of the Administrator assessing the civil penalty shall not be subject to judicial review.

[Unless someone has died from a food related issue, which would put the case into a real criminal court, everything else would be "dealt with" as a civil penalty. S 510 includes long prison terms for mistakes in paperwork and "labeling" (to be defined at the discretion of those in charge), and from the leaked EU/Canada trade plans, seizures of farmers' crops and equipment and freezing of bank accounts are clearly sought.]

"Remedies Not Exclusive- The remedies provided in this section are in addition to, and not exclusive of, other remedies that may be available."

While not listed as a civil "remedy" but treated as disease prevention, slaughter of their animals is another Orwellian measure within S 510 which goes well beyond seizures to military arrangements with the DOD and DHS. They would come onto farms and slaughter normal animals if any disease outbreak is announced, regardless of harmlessness. "Valid and appropriate" do not matter.

If you doubt this, consider all the raids on private food arrangements, where no contamination was found, or where the contamination was miniscule. All product has been seized or ordered destroyed, though no one became ill. S 510 would grant the FDA even more power than it already has.

This is not a "food safety" bill, as even a short overview of S 510 makes clear.

S 510 offers numerous ways for corporations to get rid of farmers and take their land. The astounding falsity of forcing farmers (or anyone with a farm animal) to sign onto a international contract in which they lose their rights to their property is transparent. Taking global coordinates of the size and shape of farmers' land and feeding them into a corporate data bank, has nothing to do with tracing animal diseases. Farmers' addresses are known.

But the USDA lie about wanting to stop animal diseases grows especially repugnant when one with awareness that the USDA is actually working against the vehement protests of cattle ranchers, to import potentially diseased animals from Brazil and to transfer an off-shore animal disease lab to Kansas, the heart of cattle country and the most tornado prone state in the country, while it's well known that it was lab leaks in the UK which led to the slaughter of millions of cattle, whether ill or not.

Such mass slaughter of animals is structured by S 510 and is yet another gift to the biotech industry for without the extermination of normal animals, their investment in GE-animals and GMO meat is worthless.

The corporations, faced with public upset at ravages of industrial agriculture and the contaminated food coming out of it, are using fear of food, fear of minor animal diseases (including a faked H1N1 pandemic still promoted by government agencies), and lies and fraud to try to eliminate real farming in the US and to facilitate the theft of all US farmland.

The greed and hubris of S 510 pales in comparison to its unconstitutionality and danger to life.

The grassroots are saying no to S 510, each in their own idioms, whether by referring to the Constitution or to the Founding Fathers and to rights or to patriotism. Across the political spectrum, people are coming together to reject S 510 on constitutional and human rights grounds, and the plans of those behind this extreme corporate bill.

The corporate attempt to end US farming and set up their own court system over all Americans far outstrips the destruction of jobs, the forcing of millions from their homes, Citizens United, and the Wall Street theft.

Does it open the door to corporate control over all Americans, all food supplies and health resources, and all US farmland?

Canada's National Farmers Union is demanding that the draconian trade plans with the EU be scrapped. Will groups here demand the same of S 510?

Good News - Evil Monsanto Finally Reaping Its Just Desserts

October 5, 2010

Monsanto, the giant biotechnology agriculture company that created genetically modified corn, soybeans and herbicides, isn't riding so high this year in the stocks department, as news comes in that its products aren't working like they'd hoped.

According to the New York Times, weeds are becoming immune to Monsanto's herbicide Roundup, and its latest genetically modified, 8-gene corn is a flop, producing yields no higher than the company's less expensive corn, which contains only three foreign genes.

"Monsanto has already been forced to sharply cut prices on SmartStax and on its newest soybean seeds, called Roundup Ready 2 Yield, as sales fell below projections," the Times said. "And the Justice Department is investigating Monsanto for possible antitrust violations."

"Until now, Monsanto's main challenge has come from opponents of genetically modified crops, who have slowed their adoption in Europe and some other regions. Now, however, the skeptics also include farmers and investors who were once in Monsanto's camp."

Monsanto was named "company of the year" by Forbes Magazine in December. Last week, television stock market commentator Jim Cramer said it "may be the worst stock of 2010," the Times said.

Sources: New York Times October 5, 2010

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Since the 1980s, Monsanto has become the world leader in genetic modification of seeds, succeeding in at least 674 biotechnology patents, more than any other company -- and they showed no signs of stopping . until now.

It seems Monsanto's glory days may be coming to an end, which is a refreshing turnaround from last December, when Forbes declared this evil corporation "company of the year" -- for reasons that truly boggle the mind.

Now, the tide is turning, and as the Times pointed out, signs are suggesting that Monsanto's "winning streak" is over:

Monsanto's newest genetically modified (GM) product, SmartStax corn, provides no greater yields than older products, despite being more expensive

Weeds are growing resistant to Monsanto's Roundup

The Justice Department is investigating Monsanto for possible antitrust violations

Already, shares of Monsanto's stock have fallen 42 percent since January, and earnings for the fiscal year are expected to be well under projections.

To say this news makes me overjoyed is an understatement, as this company represents one of the biggest threats to your future health, and that of the planet.

Monsanto Monstrosities Swept Under the Rug

Why is Monsanto top on my hit list of evil corporations? Here is just a short list of the many improprieties and outright crimes committed by Monsanto:

- Suing small farmers for patent infringement after Monsanto's GM seeds spread wildly into surrounding farmers' fields, contaminating their conventional crops

- Secretly discharging PCB-laden toxic waste into an Alabama creek, and dumping millions of pounds of PCBs into open-pit landfills for decades after PCBs were banned in the US for being a possible carcinogen.

- Being found guilty of bribery to bypass Indonesian law requiring an environmental assessment review for its genetically engineered cotton.

- Last year, the supreme court of France found Monsanto guilty of falsely advertising its herbicide Roundup as "biodegradable" and "environmentally friendly." Scientific evaluation discovered that glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp, is acutely toxic to fish and birds and can kill beneficial insects and soil organisms that maintain ecological balance. Additionally, the surfactant ingredient in Roundup is more acutely toxic than glyphosate itself, and the combination of the two is even more toxic.

- In 2007, the South African Advertising Standards Authority also found Monsanto guilty of lying when advertising that "no negative reactions to Genetically Modified food have been reported."

- According to one EPA scientist, Monsanto doctored studies and covered-up dioxin contamination of a wide range of its products. She concluded that the company's behaviour constituted "a long pattern of fraud."

- In 1999, the New York Times exposed that Monsanto's PR firm, Burson Marsteller, had paid fake "pro-GMO" food demonstrators to counteract a group of anti-biotech protesters outside a Washington, DC FDA meeting.

This should give you a clue as to why I'm thrilled that Monsanto appears to be falling out of favor, at least in the stock market realm.

Be Warned: Monsanto Has People on the Inside

Despite their falling stock prices, I don't expect Monsanto to disappear from the radar. They will continue to produce as many genetically modified crops and chemicals as the world population will accept.

And they've got help at every turn, including from leaders in the U.S. government. Michael Taylor, a former vice president of public policy and chief lobbyist at Monsanto Company, is the deputy commissioner for foods at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Who is Michael Taylor? He is the person who "oversaw the creation of GMO policy," according to Jeffrey Smith, the leading spokesperson on the dangers of GM foods. Smith continues:

"If GMOs are indeed responsible for massive sickness and death, then the individual who oversaw the FDA policy that facilitated their introduction holds a uniquely infamous role in human history. That person is Michael Taylor. He had been Monsanto's attorney before becoming policy chief at the FDA. Soon after, he became Monsanto's vice president and chief lobbyist."

The FDA policy being referred to is the 1992 GMO policy, which stated:

"The agency is not aware of any information showing that foods derived by these new methods [genetic engineering] differ from other foods in any meaningful or uniform way."

In reality, there was major concern among FDA scientists that GM foods were in fact different than natural foods, and that their creation could prompt unknown and unpredictable health problems.

Former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, now the Secretary of Agriculture, is also widely regarded as a shill for biotech giants like Monsanto (he even reportedly often travels in Monsanto's jet). There are other less noticeable connections too, such as Sharon Long, a former member of Monsanto's board of directors who was part of Obama's scientific advisory team during the election/campaign.

Let's Really Give Monsanto the Boot

This could be the beginning of the end for Monsanto . if we can continue to drive the momentum that's forming against the creation and proliferation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The first step you have already done, and that is to get informed. You can continue to spread the word further by sharing this article with your friends and family.

Next, hit Monsanto where it counts ... their bottom line. By boycotting all GM foods and instead supporting organic (and local) farmers who do not use Monsanto's GM seeds, you are using your wallet to make your opinions known.

Most people want to avoid GMOs but it is virtually impossible to do so, since the government prevents GMO labeling.

However, Jeffery Smith has compiled a resource for you to avoid the government block of information. It is the free Non-GMO Shopping Guide. We realize that with the challenging economy it is very difficult for many to donate money to help this cause, so we are merely asking for your time and connections with your family and friends.

You can really help by making this message go viral. So if you are convinced that GMO foods should not be in the US, please send this information to everyone you know; post it on Facebook and Twitter.

You can also print out the Non-GMO Shopping Guide and give it to your friends and family.

If you feel more ambitious you can also order the Non-GMO Shopping Tips brochure in bulk, and bring them to the grocery stores in your area. Talk to the owner or manager and get permission to post them in their store.

October is Non-GMO Month! Here's How to Get Involved .

There are a number of different ways for you to get actively involved during Non-GMO (genetically modified organisms) Month . which may as well be called Non-Monsanto Month, too, given that they're the leader in the GMO industry. Here is a list of Action Item for you to pick and choose from:

Subject: Hilton sex slaves

Dear Friends,

It's shocking. Hilton, one of the most renowned hotel chains in the world, could be complicit in child sexual exploitation, in their own facilities!

Hotels are one of the primary places where slave children are sold for sex by brutal pimps. And Hilton has not even signed up to a basic international Code of Conduct that forces hotels to train their staff to detect, report and assist girls and women forced into the sex industry. Hilton's action on this would be huge -- if they signed up to The Code, it would create a network of Hilton employees in 77 countries and 32,000 hotels working against the rape trade of women and children.

There is no time to lose in stopping this terrifying trade. Sign the petition for Hilton to implement The Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children From Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism. When we hit 250,000 signatures, we'll take out ads in major newspapers in McLean, Virginia - the city where Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta lives and works:

The ECPAT Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism gets hotels to train their staff to recognize victims of the rape trade and underage prostitution, educate their guests about the dangers of sex tourism, liaise with local law enforcement and advocate for victim rights. It works by creating a first line of defense against sex trafficking around the world. To date, The Code affects 30 million tourists a year - vastly increasing the chances of arresting those trafficking girls and helping those trapped in the trade.

After brothels were found in Hilton hotels in Ireland and China, thousands sent letters to the hotel chain in protest, and Hilton acknowledged its need to address the problem of child prostitution. But to date no concrete steps have been taken. By shaming Hilton CEO Nasetta in his own home town with a slew of newspaper ads and calling on him to implement The Code, we could force him and his employees to protect children in the most effective way, worldwide.

At some point in our lives many of us will visit a hotel - which of us would feel comfortable staying in a room where, close by, underage girls are being sold to men and forced to have sex? Sexual tourism that exploits women and girls benefits from hotel staff who look the other way or get a pay off to turn a blind eye. We need hotels to have a zero tolerance policy towards child sexual exploitation in their facilities.

To date, more than 900 companies across the world, including the Radisson and Country Inn Suites hotel, have signed The Code. Hilton is under pressure to join them. Click below to urge Hilton to join in the fight against sex trafficking:

Every day, hundreds of girls around the world are forced into sexual slavery. Our global call for accountability and training in the world’s largest hotel chain can make a huge dent in this vile trade.

With hope,

Alice, Emma, Graziela, Ricken and the rest of the Avaaz team
