The Inconvenient Truths Series #1: In the Grip of War Criminals

Hello everysoul!

After many, many hours of work to research and compile this for you, I leave it up to you to discover the many, many inconvenient truths that have come to my attention these past few days. As usual you'll find my comments interspersed below when I felt necessary to add my 5 cents.

I think the title of this compilation summarizes it all...

"To me, I represent a unified field of love, so therefore I am a spokesperson for the divine spark in all, which is going to be more and more illuminated as we draw closer and closer to the prophesized shift date 2012… When this takes place and the veils are lifted, including the one between life and death – we will be given full access to the cosmos as galactic voyagers with free reign to access all levels of our being and existence. It is like the true power of Gaia that regenerates itself and opens us up to its cosmic immortal nature, has been replaced by a force that carries parasitic beings that attach to people, harmful frequencies that control even the weather – also mind control, who feed off of anything that gives it power because one is unaware of its influence. Without most of humanity knowing it, they are feeding this force. This is what I was preparing to confront – those who are behind the technologies and agreements that keep us locked in global exile from the rest of the universe and our true selves. Our current reality is not fully running on the creative power of each individual or our freedom and divinity – that part of us is somewhat sabotaged in exchange for a fear producing world filled with misuses of power, suffering, environmental degradation, Natural Disasters and neglect of those who are in great need. Our collective imbalance is what causes any outward imbalance, and it is due to this divine spark being so veiled and hidden, that we function on a whole other system that is completely out of alignment with our organic make-up. The blueprints that the planet holds, we are meant to be aligned to in order to create in accordance with natural cycles, the planetary grid and then also find in our own beings, the union of polarities. With this type of awareness, we can bridge the separation of Earth and the Heavens and understand different technologies and how they either work against or with our environment. We need to co-create with the Mother energy, there is only so much that this force can do, and now is the time to unify."

- Laura Magdalene Eisenhower -- Taken from 2012 and the Ancient Game: Venus–Sophia and Recruitment to Mars - More about her recent revelations in this article by long-time ERN subscriber Alfred Lambremont Webre

Further to Lynn Nelson's "A Dream About 2012", I would like to offer some insight that I have attempted to summarize in my website: "If you have already awakened (or are now awaking) to your natural self, then you realize that humanity is on the verge of a metamorphosis into a more highly evolved state of consciousness. While it is possible to recognize our proximity to the new dimension that is dawning, in order to be there body and soul we need to leave the old dimension behind. A simple way to see this is by relating to a caterpillar entering metamorphosis. Imagine how, after the caterpillar forms its chrysalis, it completely disintegrates before reassembling into a butterfly. In the end it emerges from the chrysalis taking flight in the new world and touches down in the garden of its origin. Using this analogy to underscore the Human metamorphosis, a book called Flight Manual takes us to the place where rebirth and resurrection represent a natural and effortless unfoldment of infinite Life."

- Sylvia Bucek ( Note from Jean: In addition to this excerpt from her website I've quoted for you above, Sylvia shares the story of her near-death experience, 30 years ago, and how she "came back with the memory of a heavenly realm and a revised view of life on Earth." In trying to convey what that meant for her she wrote: "Imagine you have died and left your self, and the world, behind. The one real thing you are aware of now is the shimmering, silver-white light cascading around you and flowing through you, turning you on to Love. You realize that your life on Earth is also made out of the same living light that is turning your world on to Love. You also realize that you can change your world picture and that you're free to go back and replay the scenes that kept you from living in Love."

"I am writing to you to put my experience into the debate of whether the H1N1 virus is a hoax or not. I am concerned when I read the web sites with stories of it being "benign" and not as bad as doctors have warned. I am a nurse in a small rural hospital. I have taken care of 5 patients with it and it is by no way "benign". My patients have had at least a 2 month stay in the hospital and required tracheostomies for long term ventilation. When they finally leave the hospital, they require oxygen at home and long term physical therapy to get their strength back. Two of my patients left the hospital in body bags. So, is it "benign"? NO! Is the vaccination dangerous? Probably. Do we need to fear catching it? YES! My sister had it. She was sick for a week and went back to work. But if you have any disease that compromises your immunity, i.e. diabetes, asthma, obesity, it can kill you. So, everyone still needs to take precautions to not spread this controversial virus. Tips to stay healthy include: washing your hands frequently, do not touch your nose with bare hands, stay home if you are sick, and try to stay in good health by eating right and exercising. Being polarized on the issue will not help us ride this wave of fear mongering by the NWO. Commonsense will."

"The beginning of 2010 was challenging! The Copenhagen Climate conference marked a huge failure in the history of international climate negotiations. As if that weren’t enough: In early January the IPCC had to put out a statement admitting that their prediction that big parts of the Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035 was erroneous. In fact, it is great news that the suspected negative impacts for hundreds of thousands of people will be greatly deferred or may actually never occur if we manage to stop the melting of the glaciers. However, the IPCC error is misused by climate sceptics as “proof” that the climate change threat is not real. This of course is far from the truth. The pace of the meltdown still remains the same. Many recent scientific reports suggest that the general IPCC predictions about the speed and consequences of global warming are far too optimistic. In fact, global warming is accelerating and the international response is totally inadequate."

- Stefan Schurig - World Future Council Director Climate & Energy -- Taken from their January 2010 newsletter -- Check their illustrated book "A Renewable World" -- "The living planet we inhabit has effectively become a disposable world. We have been using resources as though there were no tomorrow. We have been dumping our wastes in the air, on land and in the sea with little concern about the consequences. We have been living off nature’s capital rather than its annual income. It is time to take the right steps to make it a renewable world." - Taken from the excellent introduction to this book - and listen to this interview with Maude Barlow, one of the 50 councilors of WFC.

Note from Jean: Cynthia McKinney is one bright ray of hope amidst a rising dark cloud of ignominy presiding over Washington DC. She says out loud what many people now think without daring to speak out.

You can hear what she said in Munich during a peace rally at and/or read the transcript below...

Thank you for allowing me to come from the United States and participate in this rally for peace.
My country has been hijacked by a criminal cabal intent on using the hard-earned dollars of the American people for war, occupation, and empire.
As a result, the national leadership of my country, both Democratic and Republican, became complicit in war crimes, torture, crimes against humanity, and crimes against the peace.
As a Member of Congress from the Democratic Party, I drafted Articles of Impeachment against George Bush, Dick Cheney, and Condoleezza Rice. Later, when Democrats voted to support more war rather than take care of the needs of the people, I declared my independence from them and all national leadership; the Green Party nominated me to run for President, which I did on a platform of truth, justice, peace, and dignity.
I watched as Candidate Barack Obama came here to Germany to speak. I saw tears on the faces of many in the crowd who believed that, finally, there was something worth believing in again. That America had turned a page from its evil playbook that had so outraged and disappointed the world. That good was finally about to triumph over evil.
I know that beleaguered people all over the world, victims of cruel and deadly military, economic, imperial policies finally could believe in hope and change. And America could be believed in again.
Everywhere I went all over the world there were pictures of Barack Obama, slogans “Yes, We Can,” and the words “Hope” and “Change” plastered everywhere.
And after eight years of George W. Bush, Barack Obama seemed to be the man the world was waiting for.
So when the Candidate became the President, we held our breath in anticipation.
That torture and rendition; spying on innocent, dissenting Americans; war and occupation; crimes against the U.S. Constitution and crimes against the peace would end and that the United States would finally join the community of nations.
Sadly, one year into the Presidency of Barack Obama, that is not the case.
On our front door step we have witnessed U.S. complicity in the overthrow of President Zalaya in Honduras and the hostile takeover of Haiti by 20,000 troops with guns sent in when the devastated people needed food, doctors, and heavy lifting equipment.
President Obama is expanding U.S. troop presence in Colombia, threatening the people’s gains in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Cuba, and Nicaragua.
President Obama has drones killing innocent people in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia.  And Administration lawyers are trying to figure out how to legally kill U.S. citizens.  You even have U.S. assassination teams on German soil!
Sadly, President Obama is guilty of every item I cited in my Articles of Impeachment against President Bush.
Both Tony Blair and President Obama justify war in Afghanistan by citing the tragedy of the September 11th attacks in New York and on the Pentagon. But my government has not told the truth about what really happened that day. Just like they lied to start a war against Iraq.
So what are we to do? Let us work together on behalf of truth, justice, peace, and dignity. I will struggle in the U.S. and I will struggle with you:
Not one more dime for war.
We can’t give in and we can’t give up. We must take our countries back.

International Peace Conference, Keynote Address
By Cynthia McKinney

Now, finally for the record, let me say that I left Congress, not because I wanted to, but because the special interests and the War Party wanted me out.
What could I have possibly done to raise their ire?
Well, for the twelve years that I was in Congress, I:
1. Filed articles of impeachment against George Bush, Dick Cheney, and Condoleeza Rice;
2. Voted against every Pentagon appropriation, considering it immoral to spend so much money on war when millions of our children go to bed hungry every night;
3. Defied Congressional Democratic Party leaders, by holding a Congressional Hearing exploring the role of race and class in the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina and introduced legislation to punish law enforcement that prevented the mostly Black citizens fleeing the floodwaters from crossing over from New Orleans into its mostly White suburbs;
4. Wrote legislation to ban the importation of coltan from the Democratic Republic of Congo into the United States because of the horrific human rights abuses committed during its mining;
5. Was the first Member of Congress to ask the Bush Administration of the September 11, 2001 attack on the United States, what did it know and when did it know it; and I
6. Led the Congressional Black Caucus Task Force at the 2001 World Conference Against Racism, defying President Bush’s boycott.
Currently, I am an endorser of the Brussels Tribunal that cooperated in the filing of a lawsuit in Spain against all the U.S. Presidents responsible for war crimes in Iraq.
I participate in the Malaysia Peace Organization’s efforts to criminalize war, establish a War Crimes Tribunal, and hold leaders accountable for their wars.
And in December of 2008, I tried to take humanitarian supplies to the people of Gaza after the start of Operation Cast Lead and the Israeli military rammed and destroyed our boat.
In June 2009, I tried to take crayons to the children of Gaza and the Israelis hijacked our boat, kidnapped us, took us to Israel, where I spent seven days in an Israeli prison.
I do with my body what I did with my Congressional office.
I left Washington because the pro-Israel Lobby was able to utilize all of its leverage inside both the Democratic and Republican parties target and oust me. They ousted me because I dared to believe that all human beings, including Palestinians, have human rights.
In 2007, at a peace rally in front of the Pentagon, I did what I am now asking one million U.S. voters to do: I declared my independence from a national leadership that had caused my country to become complicit in war crimes, torture, crimes against humanity, and crimes against the peace.
I joined the Green Party and in 2008, ran for President of the United States. I traveled the length and breadth of my country and now I travel the world carrying a message of truth, justice, peace, and dignity.  I spent approximately 10 of the 12 months in 2009 outside of the country.
But, I’m being told now by my friends and supporters that it’s time to come back home. That the real heavy lifting is inside our country.  That if we want life to be better for the people in the refugee camps all over the world, that we’ve got to change the policies coming out of Washington, D.C.
My very first campaign theme was “Warriors Don’t Wear Medals, They Wear Scars.” And I’ve borne my scars in public for all the world to see.
And honestly, sometimes, I wonder if it’s worth it. I take a look at where the world is and I say what could I possibly do to stop this.
And then, I think of the people of Gaza whom I saw after Israel’s Operation Cast Lead.  I saw in Gaza, the indomitable spirit of humanity. Despite the pain, the murder, the killing, the destruction--I saw life.  I experienced love.
But we don’t have to go to Gaza to gain inspiration to continue to struggle. If we just dare to look into the eyes of the homeless man looking for a warm bed, or the tired face of a mother on her way to work at 6:00 in the morning when it’s still dark, if we would just dare to love the nameless human beings whose lives turn on the policies that powerful politicians choose to support or ignore, I know we can become inspired. And in the process, spark some bit of hope in the desperate and the hopeless.
No one deserves to be hopeless.
So, I’ve come a long way to be with you. And I thank you for the invitation.
When we were organizing our “Emergency Anti-Afghanistan Escalation Rally” in front of the White House, one of my supporters reminded me of my own saying: "We must never give in when we are right."
Peace is right and we must never give up.
Thank you so much for giving me this time to share with you this evening.

Among the many comments about Cynthia McKinney available through the following stood out for me:

"Cynthia McKinney has shown by her ACTIONS what she is made of. She has risked her life to bring much needed aid to the brutally oppressed People of Palestine. She has survived attacks by the israel navy upon the Dignity, which was rammed without provocation and severely damaged. I, too am deeply proud to have voted my conscience. I voted for Cynthia McKinney and will do so anytime her name is on the ballot. She enjoys great support from the People who view her as the much needed antidote to counteract years of deadly poisonous US foreign and domestic policies that drip from the fangs of the corporate dominated government. Thank you, Cynthia McKinney for your vigorous, desperately needed and much appreciated efforts to overcome the Evil that has come over us ALL."

- "Thank you Ms. McKinney.... one of the FEW public figures with the courage to stand up for the PEACE LOVING CITIZENS in what is left of America. PLEASE, watch your back, Cynthia... we cannot afford to lose one of the few voices of freedom. Obama is a shill and a puppet. To think otherwise is to be oblivious to what is happening in front of your own eyes. And while I am at it, shame on Bob Dylan and Joan Baez et al for answering a call to perform at the WH."

The US democracy has been hijacked by activist judges siding with the worst corporate entities destroying the planet's environment and hoarding financial resources for themselves. Corporate tyranny which was stealthily implemented so far has now been legally authorized by 5 individuals who have taken on themselves to fulfill the plutocratic dreams of their corporate patrons.

"Don't Buy Any Food You've Ever Seen Advertised". Democracy Now (5/14/09)
A look back at what perhaps contributed to the rise of the H1N1 virus -- Michael Pollan is one of the nations leading writers and thinkers in this country on the issue of food. He is author of several books about food, including The Botany of Desire, The Omnivores Dilemma and his latest, In Defense of Food: An Eaters Manifesto. In light of what he calls the processed food industrys co-option of sustainability and its vast spending on marketing, Pollan advises to be wary of any food that's advertised.

A "Nobel Torsion Message" Over Norway? Another hypothesis by Richard C. Hoagland
Check also PART 2 and PART 3 to get the whole picture which is summarized HERE - Warning! Reading PART 3 you'll get very deep into the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories... and learn about all kinds of unexplained recent phenomena... Here is a telling example: "Based on "impossible" electrical, mechanical and thermal effects experienced by cars and structures miles from Ground Zero, Wood's exhaustive research into 911 leaves little doubt now that, indeed, some kind of exotic "directed-energy technology -- NOT "planes" or "high explosives" -- was responsible for the catastrophic, literal "dustification" of the World Trade Towers on 911 ... and the bizarre collateral damage that "toasted" steel ... but not paper ... literally miles away.... Based on Wood's remarkable evidence pattern -- for the deployment and use of some kind of advanced "interferometer torsion-field weapon" (our term) in the destruction of the Towers "from afar" -- Farrell has incorporated this astonishing data into his larger "interplanetary war scenario" -- A War obviously "continuing to escalate" ... occurring, perhaps, between some "rebellious faction" of the (in our model) "Nazi-derived Secret Space Program" ... and the "real world" political and economic infrastructure of the rest of this entire Planet .... An escalation which could now even account for "the tragic catastrophe of Haiti" ...." NOTE from Jean: make sure to check HERE the pictures and videos of steel columns disintegrating into steel dust, which does prove indeed that some kind of exotic energy weapon was used to disintegrate the WTC towers... Check also the pictures of other WTC buildings that had strange clean-cut holes in them as if they had been hit by straying segments of a "disintegration ray" beamed from space ... I never saw those before... Check also the Toasted Cars "A reported 1400 vehicles were damaged on 9/11. These vehicles had peculiar patterns of damage and some were as far away as FDR Drive (about 7 blocks from the WTC, along the East River). Vehicles had missing door handles for example, windows blown out, window frames deformed, melted engine blocks, steel-belted tires with only the steel belts left, and vehicle front ends destroyed with little or no effect on the back end of the vehicles. What could have caused such extraordinary damage? Portions of cars burned while paper nearby did not." LOTS OF UNANSWERED QUESTIONS INDEED!

Voyager Makes an Interstellar Discovery (December 23, 2009)
The solar system is passing through an interstellar cloud that physics says should not exist. In the Dec. 24th issue of Nature, a team of scientists reveal how NASA's Voyager spacecraft have solved the mystery. (...) Astronomers call the cloud we're running into now the Local Interstellar Cloud or "Local Fluff" for short. It's about 30 light years wide and contains a wispy mixture of hydrogen and helium atoms at a temperature of 6000 C. The existential mystery of the Fluff has to do with its surroundings. About 10 million years ago, a cluster of supernovas exploded nearby, creating a giant bubble of million-degree gas. The Fluff is completely surrounded by this high-pressure supernova exhaust and should be crushed or dispersed by it. (...) The Fluff is held at bay just beyond the edge of the solar system by the sun's magnetic field, which is inflated by solar wind into a magnetic bubble more than 10 billion km wide. Called the "heliosphere," this bubble acts as a shield that helps protect the inner solar system from galactic cosmic rays and interstellar clouds. The two Voyagers are located in the outermost layer of the heliosphere, or "heliosheath," where the solar wind is slowed by the pressure of interstellar gas. CLIP

Extrajudicial Killings: US Government "Death List" for American Citizens by Prof. Francis A. Boyle (February 10, 2010)
This extrajudicial execution of human beings constitutes a grave violation of international human rights law and, under certain circumstances, can also constitute a war crime under the Four Geneva Conventions of 1949. In addition, the extrajudicial execution of U.S. citizens by the United States government also violates the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution mandating that no person "be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law." The U.S. Government has now established a "death list" for U.S. citizens abroad akin to those established by Latin American dictatorships during their so-called "dirty wars." The Bush Administration reduced the United States of America to a Banana Republic waging a "dirty war" around the world in gross violation of international law, human rights law, and the laws of war. It is only a matter of time before the United States government will establish a similar "death list" targeting U.S. citizens living here at home. As someone who used to teach Constitutional Law, President Obama knows better.

Ron Paul Warns us of Social Unrest and Martial Law to come

Ron Paul Warns Of Neo-Con Takeover Of Tea Party Movement (February 10, 2010)
Grass roots groups founded by Congressman’s supporters have been infiltrated by Republican party operatives -- Congressman Ron Paul warns that the movement his supporters founded nearly three years ago has been infiltrated and overtaken by neo-cons, following the de facto election of Sarah Palin as the leader of the nationwide tea party movement. Speaking with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Paul said his message was “somewhat different” to what the tea party groups are now espousing and that his core ideals had been “diluted” since the tea party movement began to grow. “The Republican party wants to make sure there’s a neo-con type of influence,” said Paul, adding that Palin’s endorsement of his son’s Senate campaign and platform gave him pause. Paul said that the neo-con influence on foreign policy was still very much alive within the White House as well as the tea parties, proving that a movement originally founded on a strong populist stance is beginning to mimic exactly what the establishment wants.“More troops in Afghanistan, bombing Yemen and bombing Pakistan and thinking about going into Iran, so that’s the infiltration philosophically of different positions,” said Paul. As Alex Jones warned yesterday, if there was ever any doubt as to the true intentions behind Sarah Palin being forwarded as the de facto leader of the tea party movement, everything was made clear following her speech at the Republican-funded “Tea Party Nation” event in Nashville this past weekend. During her keynote address and in subsequent television appearances, Palin aggressively beat the drums for war with Iran while failing to mention any of the issues that formed the bedrock of the original tea party movement – namely ending an unconstitutional foreign policy that is bankrupting America and auditing the private Federal Reserve. Since it was hijacked by neo-cons, the tea party movement has slowly turned on Congressman Ron Paul. As the Dallas Morning News reported on Sunday, Paul has three opponents in the March Republican primary attempting to unseat him, all of whom have ties to the new incarnation of the tea party movement run by neo-cons. Watch this video in which Alex Jones explains how the tea party movement has been infiltrated by neo-cons with the intention of completely destroying a grass roots revolution originally crafted by Ron Paul supporters, libertarians and true Constitutionalist conservatives.

ACTION NEEDED TODAY - USDA to approve mutant alfalfa - Save our organics
Genetic food giant Monsanto is at it again. Its next target: genetically-modified (GE) alfalfa. One of the biggest impacts of allowing the use of GE alfalfa is contamination of other crops, including organic alfalfa, which is used by most organic dairies. The USDA is well on its way to approving Monsanto's GE alfalfa. In its own report, the USDA acknowledges the problem with contamination but says that consumers may not care enough about it for the USDA to block Monsanto's modified alfalfa seeds. This is absurd since one of the main reasons people buy organic food is to avoid genetically engineered crops. The USDA is only accepting public comments for the next two weeks. We need you to write to the USDA right now and tell them they must not approve Monsanto's mutant alfalfa. FRESH will deliver your comments before the deadline. Just like its corn and soy, Monsanto's alfalfa is designed to tolerate its leading herbicide: Roundup. We can't allow Monsanto's greed to take-over one more crop. The consequences to our choice as consumer, to biological diversity, to the survival of our small and organic farmers depends are too dire.Write your comments to the USDA now and say no to genetically modified alfalfa. Monsanto's domination of our food must stop. For the USDA to shrug it off like nobody cares is to add insult to injury. We only have two weeks to submit our comments. The fight for FRESH food will continue, and with your help we'll make it clear that people care about the food they eat. Learn more about Genetically Modified Alfalfa here.

ALERT: Stop European Commission from forcing biodiesel from palm oil onto European countries
A leaked draft EU document shows that the Commission would like to rename palm oil plantations as "forest" in order that biodiesel from palm oil plantations can still meet EU biofuels sustainability criteria. Palm oil expansion is a major cause of tropical rainforest destruction and biodiesel from palm oil can easily cause more greenhouse gas emissions that the fossil fuel it is meant to replace. Please email the new energy and environment Commissioners and ask them to amend this document to give a clear message to member states that biodiesel from palm oil has no role to play in a sustainable EU energy mix.

How to Cuddle with an Elephant Seal! An amazing experience!
For once a human being is not bringing death to a wild animal but only a gentle, reassuring presence. - "Realizing there are no words to convey the wonder and mystery of Antarctica -- what it is like to be amidst such an abundance of wildlife that is totally unafraid of humans, This video was taken on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, showing a remarkable and loving interaction between a young ("weaner") elephant seal (probably weighing 300 pounds) and the lovely young woman who was the "hostess" on our ship (ran all the hotel aspects of our voyage, but also loved to get on land and be with the animals). Video was taken by her husband, who was also our excellent chef. This video was taken last November and it says it all. Watch it first for the seal, and then again for the penguins in the background."

Whistleblower Laura Magdalene Eisenhower, Ike’s great-granddaughter, outs secret Mars colony project
In a public statement, Laura Magdalene Eisenhower, great-granddaughter of former President Dwight David Eisenhower (1890-1969), has exposed her attempted recruitment from April 2006 through January 2007 by a secret Mars colony project. Ms. Eisenhower’s account of her targeting by time travel surveillance and attempted manipulation by trained intelligence agents attached to a Mars colony project was revealed in an interview, and in an extensive written statement at Ms. Eisenhower’s website. Ki’ Lia, a Stanford-educated artist, futurist and colleague of Ms. Eisenhower, has provided a corroborating first hand witness account of her and Ms. Eisenhower’s attempted recruitment into a secret human survival colony on Mars, available at Ki’ Lia’s website. The alleged purpose of the secret Mars colony was to provide a survival civilization for the Earthling human race in the event of planned (such as HAARP or bio-weapon induced) or natural cataclysm (such as by solar flares) which would depopulate the Earth. Both Ms. Eisenhower and Ki’ Lia identify Dr. Harold E. (Hal) Puthoff, a former researcher at Stanford Research Institute, as a behind the scenes coordinator of the secret Mars colony project. In revealing these secret Mars colony plans, Ms. Eisenhower and Ki’ Lia have emerged to join a growing cadre of independent whistleblowers disclosing secret technologies and extraterrestrial-related covert operations of U.S. military-intelligence agencies and corporate entities. Ms. Eisenhower’s and Ki’ Lia’s revelations corroborate independent whistleblower revelations by Andrew D. Basiago of U.S. government surveillance of political persons of interest using secret time travel technology. Their revelations are also consistent with independent whistleblower revelations by Mr. Basiago, revealing that he has twice in 1981 teleported from a CIA facility in El Segundo, CA to secret U.S. bases on Mars, one of which teleportations was in the company of CIA agent Courtney Hunt. Expert predicts end to hierarchies and value of money, more ET/UFO disclosure starting July-Nov 2010 (January 19, 2010)
The period Nov. 7, 2009 to Nov. 2, 2010 will be characterized by the collapse of the U.K.-U.S. axis of western domination, the dissolution of hierarchies, and an end to the perceived value of money in its paper and electronic digital formats, predicts Mayan calendar expert Dr. Carl Johan Calleman. These social breakdowns are part of a period of transformation to a new era, characterized by sharing rather than individual ownership, and by higher human universal consciousness. The pace of extraterrestrial disclosure is expected to accelerate after Nov. 2, 2010. Using the time acceleration matrices of the Mayan calendar, Dr. Calleman correctly predicted the first phase of the global financial collapse for the period Nov. 19, 2007 – Nov. 8, 2008. Dr. Calleman’s analyses for 2010 were made in an extended interview on with Alfred Lambremont Webre, which readers can access below. Author and time acceleration researcher Barbara Hand Clow has supported Dr. Calleman’s conclusions. CLIP

Note from Jean: This is legal - but recklessly stupid! - otherwise they wouldn't have allowed themselves to be photographed... see in this Ostinal Beach video where this is happening, and for the explanation as to why this is still allowed read They’re Shooting Each Other Over Turtle Eggs!! (September 28, 2009) "With environmental non-profit foundations losing large portions of their funding because of the global economic downturn, the real losers are now the unborn baby turtles that will never have the chance to scramble free of there shells and make their way to the sea. Sea turtle egg poaching is illegal in Costa Rica except in Ostinal beach, Guanacaste where it’s legal to take eggs during the first 48 hours of an “arribada”, a massive nesting phenomenon. During arribadas, thousands of Olive Ridley turtles emerge from the sea at the same time. Most of these nests are trampled by subsequent waves of turtles and the logic behind taking the eggs is that it’s better for the locals to sell them rather than have them go to waste. However, the turtle egg loophole has every illegal poacher claiming that his or her eggs are from Ostinal. CLIP -- In view of what is explained in the next 2 articles, it would seem much wiser now that Costa Rica entirely bans turtle egg harvesting as the species is now endangered worldwide... This issue was brought to my attention by ERN subscriber Marion Ellis ( More details HERE as to why it is legal on that beach to harvest turtle eggs for 3 days every month. The largest "arribada" thus far recorded in Ostional, took place in November 1995 when a calculated 500 000 females came ashore.

Olive Ridley Turtle - Endangered Species
The Olive Ridley Turtle is among the lesser endangered of those which are in jeopardy, yet it is still endangered to a great degree. The Olive Ridley Turtle is a small turtle which mates only once per year and when it does makes it’s nesting areas on only five areas world wide. Among them are Costa Rica, Mexico, and the coast of Northern India. When the Olive Ridley nests great numbers of the species will crawl ashore at the same time in order to lay their eggs on the warm sands of the coastal beaches. These turtles have evolved this strategy in order to leave more eggs than the natural predators will take from them and thus most of the babies will survive. Unfortunately this pattern does not allow for the activity of one of the most dangerous and tenacious of predators; man.Orissa India is one area where the turtles visit in order to lay their eggs. Once they arrive in India, fishermen set netting or using mechanical means drown the turtles by keeping them caught in the devices. Although there is in place a 4 mile zone of protection from the shore, the fishermen will defy the legal methods of protection for the turtles and continue to kill them. Estimations are that over 150,000 of these turtles have been killed in the last ten years. South America too, where the turtles go to breed, as well as Central America is not safe havens for the Olive Ridly. Here there is a very broad illegal market for the turtle’s eggs, which have been traditionally used as aphrodisiacs. They are targeted for the eggs rather than the animals themselves however the end result is the same. The small turtles don’t live and don’t replace those which are being killed brutally in other places. Not long ago, a truck was stopped in Mexico City which held over half a million turtle eggs, all of which were taken from just one beach. Each of those small turtles might have replaced another which was taken, but did not. The Olive Ridley turtle is hunted for its meat, its skin and also its shell. Although the hunting has in fact closed, it has not in any way halted. We as human beings need to take responsibility for assuming the survival of those which are left to us, by writing to the governments involved and asking that they prosecute those who defy the laws which protect the Olive Ridley turtle. You can help to protect the Olive Ridley turtle by linking to this article from your website or blog, facebook or myspace and help bring awareness to what’s really happening to the Olive Ridley Turtle. The Sea Turtles in Costa Rica Are Victims of Global Warming (DECEMBER 14, 2009)
(...) Sea turtles are very sensitive about the side effect caused by climate warming. They look for food on coral reefs which are now dying due to increasingly warm and sour seawater. They cover their eggs with sand on the beach. But the beach was destroyed due to rising sea level and storms. Besides, the sex of a sea turtle is not determined by gene, but it’s determined by the temperature around the egg when it is hatched. Slight rise in temperature can make all of the hatched turtles become female ones, which is a big problem for the existence of the species. An expert of World Wildlife Foundation said, “Sea turtle is the first marine species affected by global warming. The speed of climate change is much faster than ever before. But the existence of this species is much dependent on temperature.”If the temperature of the sand around a turtle’s egg reaches 30 degrees centigrade, its sex balance will lean to female. The expert said, “If the temperature reaches 32 degrees centigrade, the hatched turtles are all female ones. If the temperature is 34 degrees centigrade, all that you can get are boiled turtle’s eggs.” (...) Nowadays, collecting turtle’s egg in Costa Rica is an illegality, but poaching in some towns is still prevailing. CLIP

NOTE from Jean: If you want to know more about this issue and offer much needed help to save the turtles from extinction, visit the following websites:

Save the Turtles
(...) Currently, our focus of sea turtle protection is the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. This richly bio-diverse area is a vital nesting habitat for the green and the hawksbill turtles and the fourth most critical nesting habitat in the world for the greatly endangered leatherback. The leatherback is so close to extinction that the emptying of just one nest of eggs has huge implications for its survival as a species. CLIP

Pretoma - Sea Turtles
(...) The colossal decline in sea turtle populations is the result of many factors which include; the consumption of turtle meat and eggs as well as the collection of turtle carapaces and fat for commercial and home use, the deterioration of nesting beaches, foraging areas and mating sites, loss of nesting habitat due to the construction of beachfront homes and hotels and other activities related to tourism, the compaction of sand due to cars and foot traffic and the extraction of sand from nesting beaches for use in construction and other activities. However, without a doubt one the most damaging activities today, not only to sea turtles, but to marine life in general, is the commercial fishing industry. Longliners and shrimp trawlers kill hundreds of thousands of sea turtles as well as huge numbers of birds, fish, cetaceans, and pinnipeds, each year. CLIP

Sea Turtle Protection Project
(...) Green sea turtle populations in Hawaii, Florida, and other areas of the world are being devastated by a mysterious disease called fibropapilloma. This disease--which is most often fatal--is at epidemic levels in some areas, and is starting to spread to other species of sea turtles as well. CLIP

Costa Rica proposes to downgrade Las Baulas National Park, threatening leatherback sea turtles by Jeremy Hance (November 11, 2009)
Costa Rica is considered by many to be a shining example of environmental stewardship, preserving both its terrestrial and marine biodiversity while benefiting from being a popular tourist location. However, a new move by the Costa Rican government has placed their reputation in question. In May of this year the President of Costa Rica, Oscar Arias, presented a law to the legislature that would downgrade Las Baulas from a National Park to a 'mixed property wildlife refuge'. The downgrading would authorize a number of development projects that conservationists say would threaten the park's starring resident: the leatherback turtle. The world's largest sea turtle, the leatherback, is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List, and Las Baulas National Park is considered a vital nesting ground for the Pacific population. "This new law introduced by President Arias will be the death of the Costa Rican National Park System and the protection it provides to your environmental national treasures. The world has looked-up to Costa Rica as an example of how to shape an ecotouristic economy; yet this action by the Arias administration will open Pandora’s box to the elimination and attacks on all the other national parks," marine biologist Frank Paladino of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne stated in a letter. Leatherback sea turtle laying eggs on a beach in Suriname. Photo by Tiffany Roufs. The law if passed would reduce protected area along the beaches where leatherbacks nest from 120 meters to 50. It would further allow a wide-variety of development, including condominiums and tourist facilities. Conservationists say that such developments would bring a flood of people, vehicles, and domestic animals that will harm the leatherback habitat. "[The Leatherback sea turtle] Pacific population is in great trouble due mainly to beach disturbance. They have declined by about 98 percent since the early 1980s. CLIP

Laura Chinchilla won Costa Rica's presidential election in a landslide victory Sunday that is eliciting cheers from women across Central America. Center-right politician Laura Chinchilla is set to become Costa Rica's first woman president after a landslide victory Sunday that is invigorating women in the tiny Central American nation and beyond. Ms. Chinchilla received 46.8 percent of the votes, winning Sunday's presidential election in the first round. Her closest competition, left-leaning candidate Ottón Solís, captured just 25.1 percent of votes. Close on his heels in third place was Libertarian candidate Otto Guevara who received 20.9 percent. “It's a significant moment in Costa Rica's history, to have a woman president,” says Fernando Zeledón, political science professor at the University of Costa Rica. “It’s a new chapter in history.”With her parents, husband, and 13-year-old son standing behind her, Chinchilla accepted the presidential victory Sunday night by pledging to make Costa Rica the first developed country in Central America, confirming her commitment to the goal to go carbon neutral by 2021, and promising to improve health and citizen safety. She asked Costa Ricans "to help to bring forward this immense responsibility." CLIP

869 species extinct, 17,000 threatened with extinction (July 02, 2009) NO CAUSE FOR REJOICING!...
Nearly 17,000 plant and animal species are known to be threatened with extinction, while more than 800 have disappeared over the past 500 years, reports the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The group warns that governments will miss their 2010 target for reducing biodiversity loss. "When governments take action to reduce biodiversity loss there are some conservation successes, but we are still a long way from reversing the trend," says Jean-Christophe Vié, Deputy Head of IUCN's Species Program and senior editor of Wildlife in a Changing World, a report based on analysis of the 44,838 species on the IUCN Red List. "It's time to recognize that nature is the largest company on Earth working for the benefit of 100 percent of humankind – and it's doing it for free. Governments should put as much effort, if not more, into saving nature as they do into saving economic and financial sectors." The report shows that 869 species are "Extinct" or "Extinct the Wild" (rising to 1,159 if the 290 "Critically Endangered" species listed as "Possibly Extinct" are included) and at least 16,928 species are threatened with extinction. While these numbers are substantial, they are likely "gross" underestimates since only 2.7 percent of 1.8 million described species have been assessed. Scientists estimate there are 10-100 million species on Earth. The report found some plant and animal groups to be particularly vulnerable. One third of amphibians, nearly a quarter of mammals, 27 percent of reef-building corals, 17 percent of sharks and rays, 29 percent of conifers, and 52 percent of cycads are threatened with extinction. "The report makes for depressing reading," says Craig Hilton Taylor, Manager of the IUCN Red List Unit and co-editor. "It tells us that the extinction crisis is as bad, or even worse, than we believed. But it also shows the trends these species are following and is therefore an essential part of decision-making processes. In the run-up to 2010, the global community should use this report wisely to address the situation." The report notes that the proportion of species at risk is expected to rise with as the planet warms. Land use change due to human development will interfere with migration to safer elevations and latitudes.

Dr. Margaret Flowers on Medicare for All (February 5, 2010)
Watch this amazing interview -- or Read the transcript -- While many in Congress, the press and the public have given up on the idea of even a limited public option in health care reform, Flowers and her group, Physicians for a National Health Program, are standing firm for a single-payer plan. Specifically, they want to extend the Medicare program, which they see as a functioning single-player plan, to the nation as a whole. Flowers has testified before Congress and penned Op-Eds and she has been arrested three times in her attempts to get Congress and the White House to pay attention to single-payer. Read Dr. Flowers' open letter to President Obama (...) Watch "Sick Around the World" to see how five other countries provide health care.

NOTE from Jean: This exceptional interview (above) of a new and fast-rising American heroine has led to a flurry of laudatory and complementary comments which you can read in A Single-Payer Solution? - Here as a couple of them:
"What is “Single Payer”? “Single Payer” is simply a method of paying for healthcare and nothing more.“Single Payer” is not related to political/social philosophy. It is an accounting method. 36 developed countries use this “Single Payer” accounting method to fund their national healthcare system. “Single Payer” has nothing to do with “how the healthcare system works”. Of the 36 developed countries that use the “Single Payer” method for funding, no two have identical healthcare systems. Those healthcare systems range from the pure Socialist system of the French to the pure Capitalist/For Profit (insurance companies/medical resources) of the Swiss. The “Single Payer” method for funding has resulted in no uninsured, no medical bankruptcies, no citizen dying for lack of medical care, increased longevity, declining infant mortality, the cost of medicine 70% less than in the U.S, the average cost per citizen 50% of what we pay here…the list goes on.“Single Payer” is simply a method of paying for healthcare and nothing more. What is “Single Payer”? Yes, another precious opportunity lost. Why “Single Payer”?We have 47 million uninsured, over 10,000 medical bankruptcies per week (more than 520,000 per year), infant mortality at 19th, declining longevity, medicine cost 70% more here than in any other country, more than 22,000 will die for lack of medical care this year, we have healthcare fairs in our major cities just like the Congo, Uganda, Bolivia, Sudan…etc. There are 36 developed countries. Every one has a “Single Payer” Healthcare System. Every one of those countries have “Healthcare Results” superior to what we have here in the United States. The average cost per citizen is 50% of what we pay in this country. In 2008 we the American people spent 2.3 trillion dollars on healthcare. That 2.3 trillion dollars got us 37th in the world. A “Single Payer” system would cut that 2.3 trillion in half (money we are spending now) and eliminate the problems listed. They have none (not one) of the listed problems we have in this country."

(...) "Thank you Dr. Flowers for standing up for what you believe in and for putting people before money and power. How refreshing! There are many of us behind you and want Medicare for all. Some crazy hysteria convinces people that they don't want a government run program, but those same people don't realize that Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and any number of other programs are government run. And the money that runs these programs comes from "the people". Even the money that corporations have comes from people buying their goods. Without our hard earned tax dollars there would be no government. Let's spend the people's money on the people."
(...) "For those who haven't yet seen Michael Moore's excellent, eye-opening documentary on health care in other countries, I IMPLORE you to watch his movie "SICKO"! Without the information presented in "SICKO", a person cannot see how BACKWARD our system really is!Again, thanks be to Dr. Flowers for her eloquent words and her patriotic efforts in bringing sanity to this issue!Posted by: Robert Stevens | February 6, 2010 9:54 AMDr. Margaret Flowers should be in Congress, not to appear before a committee hearing, but to hold a seat in Congress and to CHAIR a hearing.Dr. Flowers' awe-inspiring pleas for sanity should be echoed by EVERYBODY in (what should be) OUR government. And she SHOULD be representative of those in our government. To see the likes of Max Baucus chairing a hearing where her voice is stifled is maddening!"

Food price rise angers Indians (FEBRUARY 06, 2010) WITH A VIDEO
Manmohan Singh, the Indian prime minister, has met state chief ministers to discuss the country's rising inflation. In December prices jumped 7.3 per cent, and it is feared they could rise further over the next few months. Food has always been a political hot potato in India. Rising onion prices a few years ago contributed to the removal of a government.Jean Dreze, a development economist, told Al Jazeera: "Food prices have been rising very fast since the past few months, making it harder and harder for people to satisfy their nutritional requirements. "So people really need a kind of protection from this kind of food insecurity. To some extent, we have some measures like the common guarantee act but it's not enough. We also need other measures to protect people from hunger." Local markets, or bazaars, have now become the first stop shop for consumers looking for good deals in India. But with the highest inflation rates in 11 years and the worst drought in 30 years, even these are not that lucrative anymore. With the government finding it hard to explain its policies, people's anger is steadily rising. And as Prerna Suri reports, it has left many more Indians struggling to feed their families.

US rejects China Dalai Lama warning (FEBRUARY 03, 2010)
The United States has rejected pressure from China to stop a meeting between Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama. Bill Burton, a White House spokesman, said on Tuesday that "the president told China leaders during his trip last year that he would meet with the Dalai Lama, and he intends to do so". "The Dalai Lama is an internationally respected religious and cultural leader, and the president will meet with him in that capacity." The confirmation of the meeting comes despite warnings from China that any meeting with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader could further harm already strained China-US relations.

China PLA officers urge economic punch against U.S. (Feb 9, 2010)
BEIJING (Reuters) - Senior Chinese military officers have proposed that their country boost defense spending, adjust PLA deployments, and possibly sell some U.S. bonds to punish Washington for its latest round of arms sales to Taiwan. The calls for broad retaliation over the planned U.S. weapons sales to the disputed island came from officers at China's National Defence University and Academy of Military Sciences, interviewed by Outlook Weekly, a Chinese-language magazine published by the official Xinhua news agency. The interviews with Major Generals Zhu Chenghu and Luo Yuan and Senior Colonel Ke Chunqiao appeared in the issue published on Monday. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) plays no role in setting policy for China's foreign exchange holdings. Officials in charge of that area have given no sign of any moves to sell U.S. Treasury bonds over the weapons sales, a move that could alarm markets and damage the value of China's own holdings. While far from representing fixed government policy, the open demands for retaliation by the PLA officers underscored the domestic pressures on Beijing to deliver on its threats to punish the Obama administration over the arms sales. (...) China has the world's biggest pile of foreign currency reserves, much of it held in U.S. treasury debt. China held $798.9 billion in U.S. Treasuries at end-October. But any attempt to use that stake against Washington would probably maul the value of China's own dollar-denominated assets.China has condemned previous arms sales, but has taken little action in response to them. But Luo said the country's growing strength meant that time has passed."China's attitude and actions over U.S. weapons sales to Taiwan will be increasingly tough," the magazine cited him as saying. "That is inevitable with rising national strength."

China threatens world health by unleashing waves of superbugs (5 Feb 2010)
China's reckless use of antibiotics in the health system and agricultural production is unleashing an explosion of drug resistant superbugs that endanger global health, according to leading scientists. -- Chinese doctors routinely hand out multiple doses of antibiotics for simple maladies like the sore throats and the country's farmers excessive dependence on the drugs has tainted the food chain.Studies in China show a "frightening" increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus bacteria, also know as MRSA . There are warnings that new strains of antibiotic-resistant bugs will spread quickly through international air travel and internation food sourcing. "We have a lot of data from Chinese hospitals and it shows a very frightening picture of high-level antibiotic resistance," said Dr Andreas Heddini of the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control."Doctors are daily finding there is nothing they can do, even third and fourth-line antibiotics are not working." There is a real risk that globally we will return to a pre-antibiotic era of medicine, where we face a situation where a number of medical treatment options would no longer be there. What happens in China matters for the rest of the world." CLIP

Think Government Is Corrupt? You May Face 10 Years In Jail (February 8, 2010)
Subversives who think government is corrupt and should be controlled by the people face 10 years in prison and a $25,000 dollar fine if they fail to register with authorities in South Carolina, in another chilling example of how free speech and dissent is being criminalized in America. The state’s “Subversive Activities Registration Act” is now officially on the books and mandates that “Every member of a subversive organization, or an organization subject to foreign control, every foreign agent and every person who advocates, teaches, advises or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States … shall register with the Secretary of State.”Of course, the right to overthrow a government that has become corrupt, abusive and completely unrepresentative of its electorate is enshrined in the Declaration of Independence – that’s how America came to be a Republic in the first place – advocating or teaching that the people should “control” the government via their elected representatives is a basic function of a democratic society, but this law effectively makes it a terrorist offense. War casualties 'increasing' ahead of Afghan assault (Feb 10, 2010) ANOTHER FALLUJAH IN THE MAKING?
OUTSKIRTS OF MARJAH, Afghanistan (AFP) – The Red Cross warned on Wednesday that war casualties were increasing around a Taliban bastion where US Marines are gearing up to launch a massive assault. Thousands of Marines, NATO and Afghan soldiers are massing around the town of Marjah in Helmand province, where military officials have predicted an impending offensive will be one of the biggest of the eight-year US-led war.The flow of residents fleeing the imminent offensive has slowed, provincial officials said, after loaded-down cars, trucks, tractors and buses clogged roads to the provincial capital Lashkah Gar for days."We have announced and told people in Marjah not to leave their houses as our operation is well planned and designed to target the enemy," said Daud Ahmadi, spokesman for Helmand Governor Mohammad Gulab Mangal. "Civilians will not be harmed," he said. He added that another 75 families had left Marjah, on top of 164 families who left earlier. Other officials have said more than 400 families have fled. The operation, expected to begin in days, will be the biggest push since President Barack Obama announced a new surge of US troops in Afghanistan and one of the biggest since the 2001 invasion defeated the Taliban regime. Marjah: Heroin and Taliban heartland -- The counter-insurgency strategy aims to follow up what officials predict will be a decisive military victory by establishing Afghan government control. But Taliban fighters appear defiant in the face of the enormous fire power being amassed in the region, where they have held sway for years in tandem with drug traffickers. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned that "the current upsurge in military operations in Helmand... has resulted in a marked increase in the number of casualties requiring emergency medical treatment." (...) The biggest threat faced by international and Afghan forces is IEDs, with the Taliban claiming to have developed a new bomb -- named Omar after their fugitive leader -- that cannot be detected by Western mine sweepers. So far this year more than 60 foreign troops have died in Afghanistan. The number of foreign troop deaths hit a record 520 last year.

America Needs Pakistan’s Help -- Again (12/19/2009)
Ordinary Americans need the assistance of Islamabad now more than at any time in the past six decades. That aid lies not in combating “Islamo fascism” but in countering the influence inside the U.S. of Israeli war-planners known for their expertise at provoking extremism. To grasp what must be done requires a review of three related developments. First is a policy-making legacy from the era of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Second is a little known account of an Israeli attempt to corrupt policy-making in Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population. Third is confirmation that, by its steady growth in influence over the past six decades, Israel is now shaping U.S. policy to advance a Judeo-fascist agenda. (...) We now know that 911-related intelligence was "fixed" around a preset agenda for Greater Israel long sought by Israelis and pro-Israelis with the help of Iraqi liar Ahmad Chalabi, an asset developed over decades by Zionist war-planners Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz. Pakistan must realize that the same mental and emotional manipulation deployed to induce a U.S.-led invasion of Iraq is now being used to provoke an invasion of Iran. By destabilizing Pakistan and portraying its western provinces as a haven for Al Qaeda, Zionists will make it appear that Islamabad's nuclear arsenal is insecure. That perception heightens the plausibility of an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran, citing a nuclear risk. See: The Nuclear Riddle - Israel Gets Its Way (A MUST READ!). That perceived insecurity also strengthens the rationale for an Israeli operation-flying the U.S. flag-to take over the government of Pakistan. What could soon happen to Islamabad directly is what happened to the U.S. over decades indirectly. See: How Israel Lobby Controls US - At What Cost the Israel Lobby? Israeli Occupation Supportive Companies to Boycott - by Stephen Lendman (February 02, 2010)
In July 2005, a coalition of 171 Palestinian Civil Society organizations created the global BDS movement for "Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel Until it Complies with International Law and Universal Principles of Human Rights" for Occupied Palestinians, Israeli Arabs, and Palestinian diaspora refugees. Since 1948, hundreds of UN resolutions and civil society actions condemned Israel's lawlessness; its crimes of war and against humanity; occupation; discriminatory policies; illegal home demolitions, land seizures and settlements; oppression of a civilian population; the Separation Wall; the Gaza siege; and preemptive imperial wars. Nothing so far has worked. Palestine is still occupied. Its people continue to suffer. Their human rights are denied. World leaders ignore them. This no longer can be tolerated. In solidarity, people of conscience everywhere must pressure Israel with BDS initiatives that include boycotting Israeli companies, their products and services, and global ones supporting the occupation. They're numerous, many with familiar names. CLIP - Note from Jean: As much as the Israeli government and companies must be made to feel like international pariahs, much like what happened for the National Party government in South Africa at the time of the apartheid boycott, until Israel as a nation is made to see the errors of its ways and then a Truth and Reconciliation Commission established after actions have been taken to redress the past and present injustices against Palestinians, Israeli citizens must continue to be seen and embraced in our hearts as our brothers and sisters like the Palestinians and everyone else on Earth. The endless blame game has not lead to any positive results on the ground. Perhaps it is time now to try the Way of Love to help our Jewish soul kins, wherever they may be, to heal from the deep traumatic wounds their people carry in their heart because of the unimaginable abuse they have historically endure, which unconsciously impels them, as in any abusive relationship, to repeat/replay and inflict upon others the very behavior they so abhor. Of course, the Way of Love cannot be understood by everyone just yet because so many souls are still blinded by fear, hatred and their own deep wounds from still unhealed past or recent traumatic experiences, but with the continuing strengthening of the Web of Love now enfolding the Earth, we will soon get there and all will see and Know that we are all One. So let's keep on radiating and BEing Love while we take temporary measures like such a boycott to help along the cosmic law of karma - which has only benevolent aims at its core. Focus on Israel: Harvesting Haitian Organs by Stephen Lendman (January 26, 2010)
On January 20, Lebanon's Al-Manar TV reported on the mission, citing a damning You Tube video posted by an American named T. West from a group called AfriSynergy Productions. "The video presents something to think about while exploiting the horrible tragedy that has befallen Haiti where Israeli occupation soldiers are engaged in organ trafficking."Israel faced these charges before. In November 2009, Alison Weir's article in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs headlined, "Israeli Organ Trafficking and Theft: From Moldova to Palestine." She cited an August Donald Bostrom article in Sweden's Aftonbladet suggesting that Israel illicitly removes body parts, including from Palestinians. She stated:"....Israeli organ harvesting - sometimes with Israeli governmental funding and the participation of high Israeli officials, prominent Israeli physicians, and Israeli ministries - have been documented for many years. Among the victims have been Palestinians."Nancy Scheper-Hughes is a UC Berkeley Professor of Medical Anthropology, founder of Organ Watch, author of scholarly books and articles on the subject, and "unflinchingly honest in (citing) the Israeli connection." "Israel is at the top," she states. "It has tentacles reaching out worldwide. (It has) a pyramid system at work that's awesome....they have brokers everywhere, bank accounts everywhere; they've got recruiters, they've got translators, they've got travel agents who set up the visas."They pay "the poor and the hungry to slowly dismantle their bodies" or simply take what they want from fresh corpses. Body parts are commodities, to be harvested and sold to the rich, even though organ sales are prohibited in most countries, but not in international law. (...) Perhaps "thousands of bodies and even people known to have been alive were transferred to the Abu Kabir" Forensic Institute near Tel Aviv, Israel's only autopsy facility involved in organ trafficking, a matter that became a scandal inside the country. Its director, Dr. Yehuda Hiss, admitted doing it, never was held accountable, and until recently remained the institute's chief pathologist. In 2002 and 2005, he was investigated over the large scale theft of body parts, the practice Yediot Aharonot journalists broke, saying he had "price listings" for organs sold to universities and medical schools. On January 4, 2002, Israel National headlined, "Abu Kabir Operating Organ Warehouse," saying Hiss was:"accused of a long list of charges from inappropriate behavior as a medical professional to criminal acts such as the illegal sale of and dealings in organs and body parts, removing organs from deceased persons without consent, and misrepresenting organs in returned bodies." (...) Rich Israelis take advantage, availing themselves of what's called "transplant tourism," traveling wherever a needed organ can be found, sometimes from fresh corpses, usually from the desperately poor. The Israeli government acts as facilitator, providing subsidies of up to $80,000 for "transplant holidays." According to Scheper-Hughes, Israeli officials exhibit "amazing tolerance....toward outlawed 'transplant tourism.' "She said the Israeli Ministry of Defense is involved in a practice by which "bodies are broken, dismembered, fragmented, transported, processed, and sold in the interests of a more socially advantaged population....," Israel engaging in more of this globally than any other nation. Its medical teams apparently are doing it in Haiti, exploiting fresh corpses and the living. The Manar TV cited You Tube said "there are people operating in Haiti who do not have a conscience and are members of the search and rescue teams, including the Israeli occupation forces," far from home harvesting Haitian organs, and the pickings are plentiful. Apparently, the publicity about providing humanitarian aid is cover for this illicit operation, another crime against humanity among Israel's growing list, matched and exceeded by its Washington benefactor with generations more practice.

Silencing Cheney Dissent – How BYU Obstructed 911 Justice (Feb. 7, 2010 )
In 2006, the 911 Truth Movement singled out Vice President Dick Cheney as the first choice for being brought to justice for his treasonous acts in complicity with the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. That movement fizzled when LDS-owned BYU honored the traitor in their commencement exercises in 2007, along with removing the outspoken Steven E. Jones from BYU. -- FOUNTAIN GREEN, UT, USA -- Many people who look honestly at the Sept. 11, 2001 information see stark inconsistencies between the official story and the evidence. In reviewing that evidence, it doesn't take long to realize that there were elements within the U.S. government who not only allowed the events of that day to take place, but appear to have actually been involved in the planning of its execution. And now, they appear to be involved in the cover-up of the crime. And they are being aided in their cover-up by a wide range of spineless stooges who don't dare stand up to them but all too willingly participate in perpetuating the official story, which is a lie – and brazen treason of the principles of freedom upon which this country was founded, and which they are sworn to uphold, whether it be as elected officials, or as shepherds of their flock, which carries a moral conscience obligation of deeper impact. The motives of the perpetrators appear to include providing sufficient fear in the population to allow draconian measures such as the doublespeak "Patriot Act", airport screening, monitoring cameras everywhere, and other abrogation of God-given civil rights; stripping away basic Constitutional freedoms that otherwise would remain an impediment to those who seek to establish a police state, changing this country from being a bastion of freedom to being the primary vendor of the socialist New World Order – the reign of the beast. Not only did the events of 911 provide the shock value to embolden the conspirators, but it also served to awaken a more courageous subset of the population who see through the lies and have the bravery to question the official story, despite what it might mean for their professional or ecclesiastical standing to do so. Thus is the disposition of the 911-Truth movement, a remnant which seeks to honestly examine the evidence and bring those who are most culpable to justice. CLIP

The Shout Heard ’Round the World on Feb 19! (Jan 25, 2010) 9-11 LOGJAM ABOUT TO BREAK?!
1,000 Architects & Engineers Call for a Real 9/11 Investigation -- Press Conference and Dinner February 19, 2010 AE911Truth will hold a press conference on Friday, February 19, at 11:00 AM at the Marines Memorial Club and Hotel in San Francisco. We will announce and honor the milestone of our achievement of obtaining 1,000 architects and engineers (A/E's) petitioning for a real investigation into the destruction of the 3 World Trade Center skyscrapers. (...) Mr. Gage, said "It's an extraordinary statement that more than 1,000 architects and engineers have put their credibility and reputations on the line to demand a new investigation into 9/11. Compare this number to a dozen or so that are willing to publicly support the official NIST findings. We expect big breakthroughs in 2010." (...) NIST will have another wake-up call soon. The voices of thousands of petition signers of Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth and everyone who supports a new investigation grow louder and louder. Soon our irrefutable evidence in support of a new investigation will no longer be ignored. We now have the solid foundation of 1,000 A/E petitioners. We are launching the effort to force NIST to retract their flawed and fraudulent reports. Using all avenues available, whether through the Office of the Inspector General, or through Congressional investigations, factually correct findings based on the evidence must become the official position. The American public must come to see such public statements of denial by NIST as being totally unacceptable.

Officials in the U.S. government that benefit from 911 (12 Jan 2010)

This interview discusses the neoconservative Zionist cabal of the Bush administration who beat the drums for our illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq.

America's Dark Side: The Anti-Empire Report
(...) It's a good thing the Haitian government did virtually nothing to help its people following the earthquake; otherwise it would have been condemned as "socialist" by Fox News, Sarah Palin, the teabaggers, and other right-thinking Americans. The last/only Haitian leader strongly committed to putting the welfare of the Haitian people before that of the domestic and international financial mafia was President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Being of a socialist persuasion, Aristide was, naturally, kept from power by the United States — twice; first by Bill Clinton, then by George W. Bush, the two men appointed by President Obama to head the earthquake relief effort. Naturally.Aristide, a reformist priest, was elected to the presidency, then ousted in a military coup eight months later in 1991 by men on the CIA payroll. Ironically, the ousted president wound up in exile in the United States. In 1994 the Clinton White House found itself in the awkward position of having to pretend — because of all their rhetoric about "democracy" — that they supported the democratically-elected Aristide's return to power. After delaying his return for more than two years, Washington finally had its military restore Aristide to office, but only after obliging the priest to guarantee that after his term ended he would not remain in office to make up the time lost because of the coup; that he would not seek to help the poor at the expense of the rich, literally; and that he would stick closely to free-market economics. This meant that Haiti would continue to be the assembly plant of the Western Hemisphere, with its workers receiving starvation wages, literally. If Aristide had thoughts about breaking the agreement forced upon him, he had only to look out his window — US troops were stationed in Haiti for the remainder of his term. 3On February 28, 2004, during the Bush administration, American military and diplomatic personnel arrived at the home of Aristide, who had been elected to the presidency once again in 2002, to inform him that his private American security agents must either leave immediately to return to the United States or fight and die; that the remaining 25 of the American security agents hired by the Haitian government, who were to arrive the next day, had been blocked by the United States from coming; that foreign and Haitian rebels were nearby, heavily armed, determined and ready to kill thousands of people in a bloodbath. Aristide was then pressured into signing a "letter of resignation" before being kidnaped and flown to exile in Africa by the United States. 4 The leaders and politicians of the world who pontificate endlessly about "democracy" and "self-determination" had virtually nothing to say about this breathtaking act of international thuggery. Indeed, France and Canada were active allies of the United States in pressing Aristide to leave. CLIP

Haiti death toll reaches 230,000 (FEBRUARY 10, 2010 )
Haiti's government has raised the death toll from the January 12 earthquake that destroyed much of its capital, to at least 230,000. Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue, the communications minister, said on Tuesday that the new figure - equivalent to the 2004 Asian tsunami which affected more than half a dozen countries - does not include bodies buried by private funeral homes in private cemeteries or the dead buried by their own families.Four weeks after the 7.0 magnitude quake levelled much of Port-au-Prince and surrounding towns, an estimated one million people remain displaced and struggling to receive basic supplies. Haiti: Still Starving 23 Days Later (February 4, 2010)
You can walk down many of the streets of Port-au-Prince and see absolutely no evidence that the world community has helped Haiti. Twenty three days after the earthquake jolted Haiti and killed over 200,000 people, as many as a million people have still not received any international food assistance. On February 4, the UN World Food Program reported they had given at least some food, mostly 55-pound bags of rice, to over a million people. The UN acknowledges that it still needs to reach another one million people. The 55 pounds of rice are expected to provide a two-week food ration for a family. Beans and cooking oil are scheduled to come later. The Associated Press reported that people in Haiti at small protests were holding up banners reading "Help us, we're starving."Over a million people are displaced. About 10,000 families are in tents, the rest are living under sheets, blankets and tarps. (...) Flavia Cherry, of the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action, this week witnessed a pregnant double amputee give birth on the ground in one of the tent camps without any medical assistance at all. "This poor mother had nothing, no milk, no clothing for the baby, nothing!" Even people who can afford to purchase food are having a difficult time. A 55-pound bag of rice costs 40 percent more today than it did before the earthquake. Dr. Louise Ivers, a Partners in Health physician in Port au Prince, reports a 25 kg (55 pounds) bag of rice that sold for $30 US dollars (1,207 Haitian Gourdes) before the quake now costs $42 US dollars (1,690 Haitian Gourdes). The World Food Program reports prices are still rising and people outside the earthquake zone are having difficulty meeting their basic food needs.

G7 pledges to wipe out Haiti debt (FEBRUARY 07, 2010)
Group of Seven countries (G7) have pledged to cancel their bilateral debts with earthquake-ravaged Haiti, and urged international lenders to do the same, Jim Flaherty, the Canadian finance minister, has said. Ministers also said on Saturday that any future funding for Haiti's recovery would come in the form of grants, not loans. "The debt to multilateral institutions should be forgiven and we'll work with these institutions and other partners to make this happen as soon as possible," Flaherty said at a press conference closing a two-day gathering of finance ministers from the G7 industrialised nations on Saturday.Over the course of the two-day meeting in the Canadian Arctic town of Iqaluit, which was attended by Robert Zoellick, the World Bank president, and Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), members discussed what long-term assistance Haiti will need, Flaherty said. He did not mention any figures, but Haiti currently owes international creditors about $890 million, the Dow Jones financial news agency said.Rob Reynolds, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Haiti, said: "The pledge to cancel debts comes as the World Bank and IMF are also working on wiping the slate clean on Haiti's debt - a debt that this country is in no position to pay. Sudan Ready to Implement Agreements with Chad (8 February 2010)
Chad's President Idriss Deby is in Sudan for talks aimed at easing hostile relations between the two countries. Mr. Deby was greeted at Khartoum Airport on Monday by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. The two leaders then went into closed-door talks.Later, Mr. Bashir said Sudan is committed to boosting ties with Chad and is ready to carry out all agreements the two countries have signed. He said restoring normal relations would play a "big role" in resolving the Darfur conflict. Sudan has repeatedly accused Chad of supporting rebels in Darfur, while Chad has accused Sudan of backing rebels trying to topple Mr. Deby's government. The central African neighbors have signed several agreements and peace deals over the past five years, none of which have been implemented. Relations improved late last year following high-level talks about ending the rebel attacks and a new agreement to create a joint border security force. The countries share a border of more than 900 kilometers that is difficult to protect and relatively easy for rebels to cross. The Darfur conflict has run since 2003, when rebels rose up against Sudan's government. The United Nations says the conflict has killed up to 300,000 people and displaced some 2.7 million others. About a quarter-million of the displaced live in camps in eastern Chad. Sudan puts the death toll from the conflict much lower, at 10,000.

U.S. Welcomes Normalization of Chad-Sudan Relations (21 January 2010)
The United States congratulates the Governments of Chad and Sudan on the signing of the January 15 agreements in N’Djamena to normalize relations. The two countries have agreed to prevent armed groups from using the territory of either state against the interests of the other and to establish mechanisms to monitor their common border. We believe that the normalization of Chad-Sudan relations provides an important opportunity to advance ongoing international efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the situation in Darfur, and we call on the Governments of Chad and Sudan to contribute actively and appropriately to these peace efforts. This agreement will also enhance regional stability and promote economic growth. CLIP

Iraq to sue US, Britain over depleted uranium bombs (1 Feb 2010)
Iraq's Ministry for Human Rights will file a lawsuit against Britain and the US over their use of depleted uranium bombs in Iraq, an Iraqi minister says. Iraq's Minister of Human Rights, Wijdan Mikhail Salim, told Assabah newspaper that the lawsuit will be launched based on reports from the Iraqi ministries of science and the environment. According to the reports, during the first year of the US and British invasion of Iraq, both countries had repeatedly used bombs containing depleted uranium. According to Iraqi military experts, the US and Britain bombed the country with nearly 2,000 tons of depleted uranium bombs during the early years of the Iraq war. Atomic radiation has increased the number of babies born with defects in the southern provinces of Iraq. Iraqi doctors say they' have been struggling to cope with the rise in the number of cancer cases —especially in cities subjected to heavy U-S and British bombardment. The high rate of birth defects and cancer cases will move in the coming years to the central and northern provinces of Iraq since the radiation may penetrate the soil and water by air. The ministry will seek compensation for the victims of these bombs.

Plan to oust Saddam drawn up two years before the invasion (1 February 2010)
Secret document signalled support for Iraqi dissidents and promised aid, oil and trade deals in return for regime change -- A secret plan to foster an internal coup against Saddam Hussein was drawn up by the Government two years before the invasion of Iraq, The Independent can reveal.Whitehall officials drafted the "contract with the Iraqi people" as a way of signalling to dissenters in Iraq that an overthrow of Saddam would be supported by Britain. It promised aid, oil contracts, debt cancellations and trade deals once the dictator had been removed. Tony Blair's team saw it as a way of creating regime change in Iraq even before the 9/11 attack on New York. The document, headed "confidential UK/US eyes", was finalised on 11 June 2001 and approved by ministers. It has not been published by the Iraq inquiry but a copy has been obtained by The Independent and can be revealed for the first time today. It states: "We want to work with an Iraq which respects the rights of its people, lives at peace with its neighbours and which observes international law. (...) Ed Davey, the Foreign Affairs spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, said the document called into question Mr Blair's evidence and should have been made public before his hearing on Friday. "A plan to back Iraqis seeking to oust Saddam may have been far less damaging and certainly more legal than what happened. Yet it shows that Blair's intent was always for regime change from an early stage and before 9/11," he said. "Yet again, it seems that critical documents have not been declassified, hampering the questioning of Blair and others."* Tony Blair is to be recalled by the Chilcot Inquiry to give further evidence, according to The Guardian. It claims that Mr Blair will be questioned in both public and in private after the panel raised concerns that his evidence relating to the legality of the invasion conflicted with that given by the former Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith.

Obama Acts to Ease Way to Construct Reactors (January 30, 2010) VERY BAD DECISION!
The Obama administration [has] moved vigorously on two fronts ... to promote nuclear power, proposing a tripling of federal loan guarantees for new projects and appointing a high-level commission to study what to do with nuclear waste. Administration officials confirmed that their 2011 federal budget request next week would raise potential loan guarantees for the projects to more than $54 billion, from $18.5 billion. Energy Secretary Steven Chu has been saying for weeks that the administration would seek a greater amount of guarantees; commercial investment has been hard to come by because there is so much uncertainty about the cost and schedule for building plants. When President Obama said in his State of the Union address on [January 27] that the country should build “a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants,” it was one of the few times he got bipartisan applause. Opponents have complained that loan guarantees for projects that cannot attract commercial investment amounted to “nuclear socialism.” CLIP - Note from Fred Burks: The US administration is allocating billions in loan guarantees for risky nuclear power plants in 2010, yet ">only $320 million for solar energy research, which is on track to become cheaper than fossil fuel energy generation before long. Activists cry foul as climate-change agenda frozen out of G7 meetings (5/02/2010)
IQALUIT, Nunavut - Climate change is not on the official agenda of the G7 meeting, but activists say a new report released as some participants took a dog-sled run proves it should be. The U.S.-based Pew Environmental Group said it has quantified for the first time the economic costs of the Arctic's warming and it adds up to at least US$2.4 trillion over the next 40 years.Economist Eban Goldstein of Bard College in New York says the Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world. And he says the combination of melting ice, increased sunlight absorption by darker barren ground and the release of methane as the permafrost thaws will this year warm the earth the equivalent of 40 per cent of total U.S. industrial emissions. Forests Are Growing Faster, Ecologists Discover; Climate Change Appears to Be Driving Accelerated Growth (Feb. 2, 2010)
Speed is not a word typically associated with trees; they can take centuries to grow. However, a new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found evidence that forests in the Eastern United States are growing faster than they have in the past 225 years. The study offers a rare look at how an ecosystem is responding to climate change. (...) The chief culprit appears to be climate change, more specifically, the rising levels of atmospheric CO2, higher temperatures and longer growing seasons. (...) During the past 22 years CO2 levels at SERC have risen 12%, the mean temperature has increased by nearly three-tenths of a degree and the growing season has lengthened by 7.8 days. The trees now have more CO2 and an extra week to put on weight. Parker and McMahon suggest that a combination of these three factors has caused the forest's accelerated biomass gain.Ecosystem responses are one of the major uncertainties in predicting the effects of climate change. Parker thinks there is every reason to believe his study sites are representative of the Eastern deciduous forest, the regional ecosystem that surrounds many of the population centers on the East Coast. He and McMahon hope other forest ecologists will examine data from their own tree censuses to help determine how widespread the phenomenon is. Tropical forests hold more living biomass than any other terrestrial ecosystem. First-Ever 'State Of The Carbon Cycle Report' Finds Troubling Imbalance (Nov. 17, 2007)
The first "State of the Carbon Cycle Report" for North America, released online this week by the U.S. Climate Change Science Program, finds the continent's carbon budget increasingly overwhelmed by human-caused emissions. North American sources release nearly 2 billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere each year, mostly as carbon dioxide. Carbon "sinks" such as growing forests may remove up to half this amount, but these current sinks may turn into new sources as climate changes.

Heavy snowfall hits North America (FEBRUARY 07, 2010)
Stormy weather and snow have paralysed parts of the US east coast, with hundreds of thousands of people left without electricity. Transport links were disrupted and forecasters warned that chilly temperatures on Sunday would mean the wet snow could swiftly turn icy. The storm stretched hundreds of kilometres from eastern Indiana into Pennsylvania and then down through Maryland as far south as North Carolina. Meteorologists said they had recorded snowfall as high as 96cm in parts of northern Maryland, a record for the state. The heavy snow toppled trees and sagged power lines, leaving more than 350,000 people without electricity in Maryland and neighbouring Virginia. (...) Residents in the affected areas have taken to referring to the storm online as a "snowpocalypse" or "snowmageddon", including on social networking site Twitterand Flickr- a photo-sharing website. Mexico floodsFurther west, mudslides touched off by torrential rains damaged dozens of homes and destroyed several others in the foothills above Los Angeles. There were no reports of deaths or injuries, but residents said a wall of mud, rockand debris came crashing down in the early hours of Saturday, carrying off cars and leaving a path of destruction in its wake. The same storm system hit Mexico, killing at least 29 people as heavy rains caused rivers to burst their banks and flood roads. Parts of the country have received eight times more rain in the past four days than they normally get in a month. "The storm in Mexico and the storm in the US are actually part and parcel of the same storm," Steff Gaulter, Al Jazeera's meteorologist, said. "It started off over Mexico, then headed north over Texas and the southeast of the United States, and is now giving blizzards to the east coast.

Earthquake rattles northern Illinois (February 10, 2010)
(CNN) -- An early morning earthquake rattled northern Illinois on Wednesday, shaking an area about 50 miles west-northwest of downtown Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was originally reported as having a magnitude of 4.3, but the USGS later downgraded it to magnitude 3.8. It hit just before 4 a.m. CT (5 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about 3 miles underground. (...) The Illinois earthquake was mild compared to the one that leveled parts of Haiti last month, according to the USGS. The Haiti quake was about 33,000 times as powerful. Some of the strongest earthquakes ever known to hit the United States took place in the Mississippi River valley in 1811, 1812, and 1895, but Wednesday's Illinois event was 250 miles or more to the north of those temblors, said Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist with the USGS. "This is a different area geologically," he said, calling Wednesday's earthquake unrelated to the New Madrid quakes of the 19th century.

Fears over earthquake 'swarm' at Yellowstone National Park (January 5, 2009)
Hundreds of earthquakes have hit Yellowstone National Park, raising fears of a more powerful volcanic eruption. The earthquake swarm, the biggest in more than 20 years, is being closely monitored by scientists and emergency authorities. The series of small quakes included three last Friday which measured stronger than magnitude 3.0. The strongest since this latest swarm of quakes began on December 27 was 3.9. No damage has yet been reported but scientists say this level of activity - there have been more than 500 tremors in the last week - is highly unusual. (...) "It's not business as usual," he said. "This is a large earthquake swarm, and we've recorded several hundred. We are paying careful attention. This is an important sequence." The last full-scale explosion of the Yellowstone Supervolcano, the Lava Creek eruption which happened approximately 640,000 years ago, ejected about 240 cubic miles of rock and dust into the sky.Geologists have been closely monitoring the rise and fall of the Yellowstone Plateau as an indication of changes in magma chamber pressure. The Yellowstone caldera floor has risen recently - almost 3in per year for the past three years - a rate more than three times greater than ever observed since such measurements began in 1923. CLIP

Yellowstone earthquake swarm continues into third day, intensifies (01/19/2010)
A 3.5 earthquake hit Yellowstone National Park this afternoon as the swarm of earthquakes that started Sunday continues to intensify. The earthquake occurred at 2:32 p.m., according to scientists monitoring the current swarm. Originally, scientists had said two 3.6 earthquakes struck in less than a minute - a mile apart. A woman at the West Yellowstone, Montana Chamber of Commerce said the earthquake created a "rumble like a truck driving down the road." (...) The most devastating earthquake in recent history in the Yellowstone region occurred on Aug. 17, 1959, when a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit. It was centered near Hebgen Lake, Mont., killed 28 people and caused more than $11 million in damage. Mike Stickney, director of earthquake studies at the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, said there is no way to predict when the next big one will hit. He said it will likely occur along one of the 45 faults that line two belts - one stretching from Yellowstone National Park up to Helena, Mont., and a second one along the Montana-Idaho border. The Yellowstone Plateau is one of the largest super-volcanoes in the world and has gone through three volcanic cycles spanning two million years, which included some of the world's largest known eruptions.

Yellowstone earthquake swarm dwindles (2/10/2010)
Jackson, Wyo. - Yellowstone National Park earthquake researchers say a series of more than 1,800 small temblors that have rattled the park for nearly a month are dwindling. The earthquake swarm began Jan. 17 near West Yellowstone, Mont. Robert Smith, a University of Utah professor of geophysics and coordinating scientist for the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, says it's the largest swarm since a 1985 series that lasted three months. The latest swarm is clustered in a region about six miles long and is focused about five miles below the surface of the earth. It's included nearly a dozen earthquakes that were magnitude 3 or larger. Smith says he doesn't think the quakes have stopped altogether, but he says activity has diminished to the point where researchers are no longer filing daily swarm reports.

Hi Jean!

I just read your opening piece for the newsletter and managed ok till I got to the last paragraph then had to just accept that I really couldn't get the gist of it because of the way it was constructed; and I bet there'll be many others who feel the same (but probably won't say).Could you re-write it so the sentences are not so long and complicated?

Quoting my word of introduction:

"If you have already seen the movie Avatar and enjoyed the vicarious experience of seeing the exhilarating world of the Na'vis (the blue people living in symbiosis with the planet Pandora) through the technology-mediated interface of a laboratory conceived body of a Na'vi used by Jake Sully, the paraplegic former Marine, to impersonate a Na'vi as part of his job as an avatar operator, you will better understand the analogy I'm about to offer.

We are all just like Jake Sully, operating an avatar - our body - through the interface of a personage developed organically through our life experiences starting right in the womb up to our very last breathe on Earth. And this operator of our body is our soul, which is who we really are! But the analogy doesn't stop there. All our souls collectively form the global interface of the cosmic consciousness of Creator Source which uses every sentient instrument, small and large, throughout the universes to directly - not vicariously - experience its infinitely vast Creation. Whether you are aware of this or not, all that you experience enriches the aggregated collective wisdom and knowledge of the Supreme Operator and because of this, your intuitive sense of Self is intricately connected with all that exists through that Central Interface whose nodal points of consciousness are spread fairly evenly throughout all the dimensions of the existing universes.

Now from that perspective, it is easier to not get caught in the ever spiralling vortex of emotional reactivity that is embedded in our very feeling matrix as an automatic guidance system that is more or less in synch with the sense of right and wrong that can best help us make our way safely through the web of often distorted perceptions created by the vagaries of this very intense field of physical experience. In short, keeping alive the awareness of the soul operator in us taking part through us in this very immersive learning experience can make it easier to keep our cool, understand that this is all a big trial and error game set, and that as we become aware of the imperfect choices of other aspects of our collective of souls, we have the ability to enable innerly-prompted self-corrections in our soul kins, wherever they may be on Earth, for the Highest Good of All."

Hi Teejay!

Thanks for this feedback. So far no one else brought that issue up but I suppose you are right that others may as well be unsure as to where I was going with this...

As I reread it, what I sense is that I could have gone indeed longer to better explain what I meant to convey... that with this holistic understanding of the grand theatre of life I was suggesting with this avatar analogy, we should not allow ourselves, by a conscious choice, to be prodded into blame and accusation mode, the antagonizing reaction that is so familiar to us when we get worked up emotionally over some matters we see and sense are wrongly addressed by those in charge - like Obama who is taking quite a bad rap in many of the articles I've included in this compilation. Everyone after all is doing their best in response to the situation they are facing and according to the perspective they've been "programmed" with through life, and going into blaming mode - as if we are separate from them all, sitting outside of the global life drama and entitled to judge what others do - when we could and should instead go within and address what is screwed in our collective perspective on things - which we each contribute to emphasize through our own knee-jerk reactions or to shift into a higher level of understanding through our own innerly-guided intuitive wisdom - and thus contribute to the "soulutions" instead of to the problems.

Now of course, we first need to develop a good inner compass (our intuitive connection with our soul's wisdom) to be able to sense what is right and wrong from the universal perspective of Creator Source to which our soul is permanently connected at the deepest, most fundamental level of its existence as One with All That Is. This is what I was alluding to with the mention of our "automatic guidance system". Basically, developing this inner compass means that we need to clear our delusionary perceptions and culturally-bred belief systems out of the way so as to enable the merging of our sentient consciousness with this deeper well of knowledge and wisdom that dwells in our soul's divine core... which isn't achieved by any kind of struggle or ego-driven effort for then the ephemeral personage we usually currently think we are simply remains in control, whereas what needs to be achieved is a complete surrendering to the still small voice of our soul so as to reach a state of blissful (it can be indeed an ecstatic experience) flowing along with the Will of Life operating through us as ever more finely tuned and eventually perfectly aligned instruments of Creator Source.

Now when I suggested that "we have the ability to enable innerly-prompted self-corrections in our soul kins", this can best be exemplified by the Ho’oponopono concept (check at and read especially Beyond Traditional Means: Ho'oponopono at to better grasp what that is) whereas when we let go in ourselves of past errors -- or to quote from that article.. "The main purpose of this process is to discover the Divinity within oneself. The Ho'oponopono is a profound gift which allows one to develop a working relationship with the Divinity within and learn to ask that in each moment, our errors in thought, word, deed or action be cleansed. The process is essentially about freedom, complete freedom from the past." -- we can be freed from their deleterious influence. Likewise, the same concept applies to all other beings because of our innate interconnection with All That Is. What I mean is that if we can heal within ourselves the misconceptions that hold back humanity into erroneous ways, we can have a positively contagious effect upon the collective unconscious influencing every human being and can thus help everyone to "receive" such an ever deeply healed perspective through divinely-aligned thoughts and feelings (like Love, the most powerfully healing one) radiated through the center of our being, which instantaneously touch the center of every other being - a natural phenomenon which is best explained by the notion of quantum entanglement - from quantum physics - that books like What the BLEEP do we Know!? have helped bring into the mainstream conversation in the past few years.

I know it all sounds terribly complicated... I guess the reason why I stopped short of going into a more elaborate explanation as I just did was both because it was almost 5 am when I wrote this (writing up the intro is always the last finishing touch I put to any new compilation) and because no matter how long an explanation is about such matters, unless a soul has started "getting" it through its own self-awakening process – usually in deep meditation or through spontaneous aha! moments that usually last a couple micro-seconds but can lead to hours of contemplative deciphering – it is nearly impossible to really understand what this is all about from a purely intellectual/mental/rational and hence extremely limited perspective.

Go try to figure out, while watching from the seashore, what kind of exhilarating feeling a big wave surfer experiences when he/she is surfing in perfect synch with the onrushing flow of crashing water and thanks to a mind-boggling number of ongoing micro adjustments of his/her weight on the board to remain in control... It is simply impossible... You have to do it - to be in perfect synch with your inner sense of balance and anticipation and a fair bit of luck probably after countless hours of trial and errors - to really get it...

Not that becoming One with Who We Are and flowing on the Wave of Bliss into Onality is a nearly impossible feat that only the most adept practitioners of extreme surrendering to Oneness can achieve... Once you "get" it, it seems so simple and natural, like everyone should be able to do this kind of thing... It feels more comparable to being able to ride a bicycle, which almost anyone can master... And the nice thing about this is that as more and more people (souls in embodiment) recover their innate ability to tune into their Higher Self and drive their existence from that place, it becomes increasingly easier for others to do likewise, because they can tap more easily and spontaneously into this growing field of sensing/being Oneness. The exponential curve of this fast-growing phenomenon of spiritual awakening is what gives me hope that we will soon reach the magical critical mass that will help everyone else finally "get it"...

Now finally, concerning my long and complicated sentences, when I go into intuitive soul-sharing mode I rarely analyze what comes through as it happens so as to not impede the flow of thoughts coming through. And I rarely fiddle with them when I'm done because there is always so much else demanding my attention. I'd say that to better understand these concept-laden jigsaw puzzles as they sometimes turn out to be, it is probably better to just let their deeply layered meaning seep in - just simply feeling out the flavor they evoke - rather than trying to mentally grasp what is often beyond the limiting purview of words and sheer rationality.

Or you ask me to explain what I meant as you did, which gives me a wonderful opportunity to pull out more threads from the web of soul knowledge that is always there for the pondering and lay them out in a more orderly, decipherable manner - hopefully ! ;-)

With Love and joyful zest

PS Note: Having shared this correspondence with Al Farthing ( who stopped by in July 2007 while visiting my area, here is what he wrote back:

Hi Jean -- thanks much for sending this on .

One might have empathy with Teejay -- perhaps he or she is pretty new to all of this fascinating data, but is motivated enough to test out the waters -- it might all be pretty confusing.

We have both been working at these things for so long that what seems so self-evident, is scarcely perceptible to those new on the "consciousness scene".

What I think you tap into with these few comments is one of the really critical zones of current discussions -- what is the interface of the "Spiritual Quest" and the "seeker of truth" both young and old in our personal, corporate and cosmic lives right now?

One appreciates the call for simplicity, but that is a tall order when trying to tease out the interplay of modern scientific insights and spiritual perceptions from ancient to modern.

You also touch upon the extent to which our "ecstatic states" inform and drive our explanations at the rational level of discourse.

Mystics have never in history been understood nor treated very well, and also there is the sense in which "mystical states" are often found to be "ineffable" -- the meaning is so deep and powerful that mere words break in the attempt to explain to others, that which is unexplainable in human terms.

I think there will be lots more dialogue about this! (Which is a good thing ---)

by Maurice Ulrich - L'Humanité

Now, it's the markets that were saved with the people's money that intend to strangle those very same people.

Pigs, swine. That's how the markets' and the banks' Dr. Strangeloves now refer to the most fragile countries in the euro zone, as a play on their initials: Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Spain. The PIGS! In a veritable financial war that has just entered a new phase with the markets' aggression against countries and people, these words say much. Contempt, humiliation, deprecation, it's the vocabulary of thugs, even though they may wear white collars and a tie, with respect to those they intend to slaughter.

What's happening? The big investors, the ones that lend to countries, are now speculating on the public debt of the most fragile to demand higher profitability on their investments for the supposed risks incurred, risks evaluated by the notorious rating agencies, connected to those same big investors, and which decide the health and solvency of sovereign countries. It's an infernal machine since its logic dictates that the more problems a country has, the dearer it will pay for its financial survival, and the heavier it will have to bring its debt to bear on its inhabitants. The risk coverage itself, in the form of insurance, is also a sophisticated financial product that has to be negotiated. Hence the interest in ratcheting up the risks and arousing panic in the markets. By attacking Greece last week, the markets weakened the entire euro zone, provoking a drop in the euro itself and a fall in stock exchanges.

So, here we have it then, in the words of "Les Échos'" editorialist, "the third crisis, the real one." It comes - Alas! - as no surprise. For months, the prospect of a bond crash, that is, of a moment when states could no longer pay, has been taking shape. The rescue of the banks and the financial system, which cost billions, has increased countries' indebtedness, and now it's the establishments and the markets they've saved with their people's money that intend to bring them to their knees by strangling those same people.

But who has truly learned the lessons from what had occurred? Let us recall the court economists' insider commentaries after the first G-20 on "financial regulation." It was all underway. Reformed capitalism was going to take its responsibilities with respect to the planet into account. As though we should count on the capitalists and their governments to call capitalism into question! The restoration of the financial growth of the CAC 40 [France's S&P 500] sharks was paid for by hundreds of millions of unemployed in the world and by the dramatic impoverishment of those who were already the poorest. States' public debt will be paid for by austerity plans. Isn't that what's underway in France where the head of state and his government have taken the initiative? But that's only the beginning.

On the front line, Greece is resisting. A big demonstration will take place in Athens on Wednesday, the day before a European Economic Summit. Oh, undoubtedly, there will be talk there of new regulation, common policies, cooperation; no doubt they will worry about Greece and how to save it or how to get rid of it. For we're far from the blessed days of the miraculous euro! But acts are required and strong acts! The markets are powerful. They are not untouchable. Capitalism is now a naked king and a naked king with a problem: public opinion and the people.

Think the PIGS Are in Trouble? These 7 U.S. States Could Be Heading for Something Worse (February 06, 2010)
The inevitable coming of the sovereign debt panic finally engulfed Europe this week as the derisively (or perhaps affectionately) named PIGS spilled their slop on the continent. But Portugal, Ireland, Greece, and Spain are hardly worthy of so much attention. In truth, they are little more than the currently favored proxies among the leveraged speculator community (cough) for the larger problem of all sovereign debt. Indeed, the credit default swaps on these smaller European satellite states were not alone this week in making large moves higher. UK sovereign risk rose strongly, and so did US sovereign risk. With a downgrade warning from Moody’s to boot.Notable among three of the PIGS are their relatively small populations, and small contributions to either world or European GDP. While Spain has a population over 45 million, Portugal and Greece have populations roughly equal to a US state, such as Ohio–at around 10 million. And Ireland? The Emerald Isle has a population similar to Kentucky, at around 4 million. While the PIGS are without question a problem for Europe, whatever problems they present for Brussels are easily matched by the looming headache for Washington that’s coming from large US states such as California, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan.I’ve identified seven large US states by four criteria that are sure to cause trouble for Washington’s political class at least for the next 3 years, through the 2012 elections. These are states with big populations, very high rates of unemployment, and which have already had to borrow big to pay unemployment claims. (..) The seven states to make my list are California, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, and New Jersey. Each has a population above 8 million people. Each has had to borrow more than a billion dollars, so far, to pay claims out of their now bankrupt unemployment insurance fund. Also, each state currently registers broad, underemployment above 15% as indicated by the U-6 measure for the States. And finally, each state is a large net importer of either oil, natural gas, electricity, or all three of these energy sources. CLIP

World bankers meet in Sydney as recovery fears intensify (February 06, 2010)
THE world's top central bankers began arriving in Australia for high-level talks as renewed fears about the strength of the global economic recovery gripped world share markets.Representatives from 24 central banks and monetary authorities, including the US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank, landed in Sydney to meet tomorrow at an undisclosed location. Organised by the Bank for International Settlements last year, the two-day talks are shrouded in secrecy with extensive security believed to have been invoked by law enforcement agencies. Speculation that the chairman of the US Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, would make an appearance could not be confirmed last night. The event will be dominated by Asian delegations and is expected to include governors of the People's Bank of China, the Bank of Japan and the Reserve Bank of India. The arrival of the high-powered gathering coincided with a fresh meltdown on world share markets, sparked by renewed concerns about global growth and sovereign debt. Fears that countries including Greece, Portugal, Spain and Dubai could default on debt repayments combined with disappointing US jobs data to spook investors. CLIP

Secret Banking Cabal Emerges From AIG Shadows (January 29, 2010)
The idea of secret banking cabals that control the country and global economy are a given among conspiracy theorists. After this week’s congressional hearing into the bailout of American International Group Inc., you have to wonder if those folks are crazy after all. Wednesday’s hearing described a secretive group deploying billions of dollars to favored banks, operating with little oversight by the public or elected officials. We’re talking about the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, whose role as the most influential part of the federal-reserve system -- apart from the matter of AIG’s bailout -- deserves further congressional scrutiny. The New York Fed is in the hot seat for its decision in November 2008 to buy out, for about $30 billion, insurance contracts AIG sold on toxic debt securities to banks. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was head of the New York Fed at the time of the AIG moves. The hearing revealed some of the inner workings of the New York Fed and the outsized role it plays in banking. This insight is especially valuable given that the New York Fed is a quasi-governmental institution that isn’t subject to citizen intrusions such as freedom of information requests, unlike the Federal Reserve. This impenetrability comes in handy since the bank is the preferred vehicle for many of the Fed’s bailout programs. It’s as though the New York Fed was a black-ops outfit for the nation’s central bank. clip

Deepening Debt Crisis: The Bernanke Reappointment: Be Afraid, Very Afraid (February 2, 2010)
If the economy deteriorates in the L-shaped “hockey-stick” rut that many economists forecast, what political price will President Obama and the Democrats pay for having returned the financial keys to the Bush Republican appointees who gave away the store in the first place? Reappointing Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke may end up injuring not only the economy but also the Democratic Party for years to come. Recognizing this, Republicans made populist points by opposing his reappointment during the Senate confirmation hearings last Thursday, January 27 – the day after Mr. Obama’s State of the Union address. The hearings focused on the Fed’s role as Wall Street’s major lobbyist and deregulator. Despite the fact that its Charter starts off by directing it to promote full employment and stabilize prices, the Fed is anti-labor in practice. Alan Greenspan famously bragged that what has caused quiescence among labor union members when it comes to striking for higher wages – or even for better working conditions – is the fear of being fired and being unable to meet their mortgage and credit card payments. “One paycheck away from homelessness,” or a downgraded credit rating leading to soaring interest charges, has become a formula for labor management. How to invest for a global-debt-bomb explosion
Prepare for an apocalyptic anarchy ending Wall Street's toxic capitalism

Paul krugman - February 10, 2010

I’m with Simon Johnson here: how is it possible, at this late date, for Obama to be this clueless?

The lead story on Bloomberg right now contains excerpts from an interview with Business Week which tells us:

President Barack Obama said he doesn’t “begrudge” the $17 million bonus awarded to JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon or the $9 million issued to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. CEO Lloyd Blankfein, noting that some athletes take home more pay.

The president, speaking in an interview, said in response to a question that while $17 million is “an extraordinary amount of money” for Main Street, “there are some baseball players who are making more than that and don’t get to the World Series either, so I’m shocked by that as well.”

“I know both those guys; they are very savvy businessmen,” Obama said in the interview yesterday in the Oval Office with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which will appear on newsstands Friday. “I, like most of the American people, don’t begrudge people success or wealth. That is part of the free- market system.”

Obama sought to combat perceptions that his administration is anti-business and trumpeted the influence corporate leaders have had on his economic policies. He plans to reiterate that message when he speaks to the Business Roundtable, which represents the heads of many of the biggest U.S. companies, on Feb. 24 in Washington.

Oh. My. God.

First of all, to my knowledge, irresponsible behavior by baseball players hasn’t brought the world economy to the brink of collapse and cost millions of innocent Americans their jobs and/or houses.

And more specifically, not only has the financial industry has been bailed out with taxpayer commitments; it continues to rely on a taxpayer backstop for its stability. Don’t take it from me, take it from the rating agencies:

The planned overhaul of US financial rules prompted Standard?&?Poor’s to warn on Tuesday it might downgrade the credit ratings of Citigroup and Bank of America on concerns that the shake-up would make it less likely that the banks would be bailed out by US taxpayers if they ran into trouble again.

The point is that these bank executives are not free agents who are earning big bucks in fair competition; they run companies that are essentially wards of the state. There’s good reason to feel outraged at the growing appearance that we’re running a system of lemon socialism, in which losses are public but gains are private. And at the very least, you would think that Obama would understand the importance of acknowledging public anger over what’s happening.

But no. If the Bloomberg story is to be believed, Obama thinks his key to electoral success is to trumpet “the influence corporate leaders have had on his economic policies.”

We’re doomed.

(...) I mean, how hard is it for the White House to understand that it’s a really, really bad idea to be saying nice things about bailed-out bankers, Goldman Sachs in particular? Even if you think it’s a bad idea to come across too populist — and why, exactly? — be evasive and judicious, say something neutral. Do NOT praise Lloyd Blankfein’s savvy, OK? Maybe it was a bit strong for me to say that we’re doomed, but this really is shocking and dispiriting. CLIP

Another deadline, another milestone, another lurch up the curve...

by Paul Horsman

It is 21 years since the first scientific assessment of climate change was published; 18 years since the Rio Earth Summit at which the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was agreed. Twelve years have passed since the Kyoto Protocol was agreed and two years since the Bali Action plan. Each of these passing milestones has been variously described as ‘first steps’ and ‘ways forward’, demonstrating commitments to protect the climate. And with each passing milestone we have moved further up the curve of growing greenhouse gas emissions heading inexorably towards catastrophic climate change.

Six weeks have gone since the December climate summit where the Copenhagen Accord proposed a deadline of January 31 by which governments were to pledge how much they were going to take action to protect the climate. And as this latest milestone passed on Sunday, we see again the size of the gap between the action needed to protect the climate and the willingness of politicians to take this action. Politicians clearly are still listening more to the false honeyed whispers of industrial lobbyists and bankers than they are to the clamour of the millions of people calling for leadership and action.

Some would have us believe that because countries are making pledges it means that the governments are taking action. Nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is that all they have done is to dust-off previously stated commitments, dress them up in letters to the UN and make believe they are doing something to protect the climate.

The pledges will not even achieve one aim of the accord – keeping global temperature rises well below 2 degrees. The combined pledges of governments commit the world to at least 3 degrees of warming and beyond according to the UN’s own assessment and takes us on an unstoppable pathway where emissions will peak well after 2020 date (in order to stay well below the 2 degree threshold, emissions need to peak by 2015). And so the Accord fails its first test.

The reality is that to stay below a warming limit of 2 degrees C requires industrialised countries as a block to agree to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2020 and developing countries to agree to reducing future emission by between 15 and 30% in the same time-frame. The pledges made by industrialised countries mean a reduction of only between 11 and 19%. Even worse, if credits for protecting forests are taken into account then emission cuts from burning fossil fuels fall to between 6 and 14%. It could almost be business as usual for these industrial interests if uncertainties in economic forecasts are taken into consideration.

The accord was always a weak political agreement and now we see what governments have pledged – the weakness is all the more obvious.

And what would a 3 degree plus world have in store? Average global temperatures are now 0.8 degrees C about pre-industrial levels and there are already significant climate impacts. From the melting permafrost and glaciers, inundated islands and deltas, drought damaged farms, and storm battered continents. The world in the grip of global climate change is stark indeed.

In the face of such mounting evidence, thousands of credible scientific reports, even statements from world leaders about the dire threat which climate change poses - how and why such inaction?

For over 20 years an un-holy alliance of fossil fuel interests, climate deniers and some governments has been working consistently to derail the climate talks. And the knives are out again as the science is attacked by perverse vested interests and governments run scared of taking the courageous stand needed. Before, during and since the Copenhagen climate summit, the climate change deniers, those who put profits before people, those who would fiddle while the planet burns have kept up pressure against any deal to protect the climate. And now commentary again seems to be gearing up to reducing further out expectations for a fair, ambitious and legally binding agreement.

The ground is shifting markedly. Many governments have used the need for a global agreement to tackle this issue before taking their own steps as an excuse for national inaction. Now some of these same governments trash the global process and say national interests are more important.

But while national legislation is needed to cut emissions, the global framework is essential to ensure fairness to the most vulnerable, the appropriate ambition for targets and a global legal framework. The global framework is the only place where vulnerable countries can have their say. Simply leaving it to the wealthier countries – whether in the G8, the G20 or Major Emitters Forum – is like asking Dracula to share out the blood.

Copenhagen was a point where millions made their voice heard. The clamour is unstoppable and no matter what the politicians say is practical, no matter what the commentators advise is realistic, and no matter what industrial interests say is affordable – the growing voice will not be silenced – it will be turned into action – direct action to protect the climate....

Now – more than ever – we need to take action and change the future!

A BASIC lead on climate
Much has already been written and said about the failure of the December 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit, and no doubt there will be plenty more commentary over the coming months and years. But one thing is certain and that is the Summit marks a point in history where millions of people made clear their demands to protect the climate and the World’s political leadership ignored them. But be sure – those voices will not be silent. They will gather in number and strength over the coming months. Another key issue that has emerged is that the old power blocs are changing as fractures begin to appear and new alliances are form. Elsewhere on the political stage the G8 is being over-shadowed by the G20 and we have Major Emitters Forum – a legacy of the Bush era – or should that be error? Developing countries have largely been represented by the G77+China bloc. This bloc has been a formidable and, hitherto, an almost unbreakable alliance, believing, as they do, that they must present unity in the face of the powerful industrialised countries. In the lead up to and during the Copenhagen summit, a powerful group of emerging country economies has surfaced. Brazil, China, India and South Africa - the BASIC group have shown themselves as key players in the political games at Copenhagen. They were a key element in, together with the US, producing the Copenhagen Accord – a weak political statement with no targets for emissions cuts or a timetable – though it did include some – though not enough - financial support for developing countries. (...) This powerful voice from the developing world is welcome, but the reality remains stark that to prevent the worst impacts of a climate change, industrialised countries need to step up and commit to cutting their emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2020 and provide massive financial and technological support to enable developing nations as a whole to reduce their projected growth in emissions by 15-30% over the same timescale. The BASIC countries appear to be showing a lead that the wealthy industrialised countries could follow – but it is clear that unless they countries are willing to pick up the gauntlet and make the deep emission cuts that are necessary then the outlook for the future is bleak indeed.

Take action now. Give your world leader a reason for taking action against climate change

Pledging to destroy the climate

1 February 2010

International — The first milestone of the Copenhagen Accord came and went, and with it no sign of the kind of targets for cutting global warming pollution needed to steer the world off the path towards catastrophic climate change.

The only way the Copenhagen Accord could possibly be a useful political declaration was if its January 31st deadline had been met with tougher new greenhouse gas emission targets. After all, its stated goal is supposed to be to keep global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F) to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

But governments tried to greenwash their failure at the UN Copenhagen climate summit by merely repeating existing targets and dressing them up as action. So far, these targets will fail to hold global warming to below 3 degrees C; an increase which threatens to have horrendous consequences.

What will it take for politicians to realise that time is running out?

Masks off

It should be obvious to everyone - even those who tried hard to pretend the world was saved after Copenhagen - that the Accord is a document barely worth the paper it is written on. It was put together quickly by politicians hoping to pass for leaders.

Saving face - that was its purpose. Our climate was the least of politicians' concerns then, and obviously still is.

Summing it up, Bernhard Obermayr, Head of the Climate and Energy Campaign, Greenpeace Central and Eastern Europe said, "Today is the day for an obituary about the Copenhagen Accord's ability to protect the climate."

Where we stand now

How do governments avoid the 2 degree C threshold from being breached?

It's no secret. By 2020, industrialised nations must cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 40% below 1990 levels and developing countries need to reduce their projected growth in emissions by 15-30%. Further, the industrialised world needs to provide developing countries with new and additional funding of at least USD 140 billion annually to support clean energy and other mitigation activities, forest protection and adaptation. To give this package teeth, it must be set in a legally binding agreement.

In the run-up to Copenhagen, 15 million people called for a fair, ambitious and legally binding treaty. We're still waiting...

'Associating' - since the Accord is not legally binding and was noted but not adopted by the UN Conference, associated is the best they can do - with the Accord, the European Union repeated its target of a 20 percent emissions cut against 1990 levels - old news, and only half of what is required. The US is sticking by the meagre 17 percent of 2005 levels but making that dependent of domestic legislation.

In stark contrast to the absence of leadership by the rich industrialised world, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, one of the lowest-lying Pacific island nations last week said it's going to cut its emissions by 40 percent by 2020. Lying only 2 meters above sea level, the Marshall Islands is in danger of being washed off the map. In other words, the industrialised world has been shamed for its inaction by one of the most vulnerable nations on the planet.

Putting the "dead" in "deadline"

January 31st was a political deadline. We are approaching other deadlines though; ones that nature decides on and which politicians will not be able to talk their way out of. If global warming gets to the point where 'tipping points' are passed there will be no way for us to backtrack and undo the mess.

While three degrees of warming would likely be catastrophic. But even 2 degrees C risks possible partial, but irreversible deglaciation of the Greenland ice sheet and even the West Antarctic ice sheet, that could eventually lead to sea level rise of several meters. Half-of-one degree more could lead to 20-80% loss of the Amazon rainforest and countless species that live in the rainforest.

Click here for a revealing image. Source: The Third Degree.

It is the poorest and those least responsible for causing the problem who are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The fight for survival of millions of people around the world and countless species of plants and animals is the brutal reality as permafrost melts, sea levels rise, tropical storms batter continents and once-fertile lands battle with floods or drought. But climate change knows no borders - we will all feel its impacts. It threatens economies, environments, human society and welfare.

No Scandal behind these gates (5 February 2010)
Since December there has been a glut of stories challenging the science of climate change as represented by the IPCC. Should we be concerned? Only about climate change. (...) From reading the mainstream media, you might think there's a battle of opinion going on in the scientific community. Nothing could be further from the truth. The scientific consensus represented by the IPCC's reports is robust. Scientists who are sceptical about 'anthropogenic global warming' (AGW) are so thin on the ground, for instance, that the BBC's environmental analyst, Roger Harrabin, e-mailed a climate-denier blog on 3 February, for help in finding one! He wrote, "I am trying to talk to UK scientists in current academic posts who are sceptical about AGW. I’m struggling to find anyone..." Another inaccurate claim recently going around was that the IPCC's conclusion that coral reef degradation is linked to climate change was solely based on a report by Greenpeace. In fact, the IPCC's findings are solidly underpinned by peer-reviewed science. This is a recurring story over the past 20 years of the IPCC. Attacks against the IPCC have originated from hired guns of the fossil fuel industry or disgruntled individuals. (...) The science is clear, climate change is real, is happening now, and is caused by people. The solution is still in our hands, with clean energy, smart use of our power, and forest protection. New Bill Would Create 10 Million Solar Roofs Across US

by Brian Merchant, Brooklyn, New York on 02. 5.10

A great new bill was introduced to Congress yesterday (how often do you get to write a sentence like that these days?). Authored by Bernie Sanders (I-VT), it would create incentives and tax rebates for solar roofs and solar water heaters. The bill aims to get 10 million solar roofs and 200,000 solar heaters up and running--producing a total of 30,000 megawatts--over the next 10 years. Quite frankly, this is a very, very good idea.

First of all, 'distributed' solar projects like those that appear on roofs and along transmission lines are enjoying a surge right now. 1300 megawatts of such distributed solar projects have been approved in California in just the last couple of weeks. Why is this? Because distributed solar is far more versatile and easier to get clearance install--they face far fewer regulations than mammoth solar plants like those proposed for the Mojave desert.

As a result, such projects are popping up all over the place, especially in states with solar incentives like California. Sanders' bill, in fact, uses those incentives as a model for his legislation. Here's Grist on what Sanders' bill would do:

The "10 Million Solar Roofs & 10 Million Gallons of Solar Hot Water Act" ... would provide rebates that cover up to half the cost of new systems, along the lines of incentive programs in California and New Jersey (not coincidentally, Nos. 1 and 2 in installed solar in the U.S.). It also includes measures to insure that those who receive assistance get information on how to make their buildings more energy efficient.

Such a generous tax break would make distributed solar extremely attractive, especially considering that the price of photovoltaic cells keeps on dropping. Additional benefits include the fact that distributed solar--like solar roof--projects can be easily linked to the grid, and can create jobs swiftly, thanks to the fact that there are relatively few assessment hurdles to be jumped.

Dave Roberts interviewed Sanders about his new bill, and while the entire piece is well worth reading, I'll excerpt a couple of the pertinent bits here:

On what the bill would cost:

Bernie Sanders: "We think this will cost between 2 and 3 billion dollars a year, and at the end of a 10-year period we are going to be producing 30,000 new megawatts of energy--the equivalent of what 30 nuclear power plants produce. This is a very cost effective way of producing that energy.

On the mechanics of the bill:

"Remember that there are already a lot of tax credits, federal and in many states. The federal tax credit would be up to 30 percent off the cost of a project. That's a lot. Let's say hypothetically you wanted to spend $40,000 on solar. If you take 30 percent off that, you're down to $28,000. If you get state help you're down to $25,000. Then the federal government would pay half of that.

"That's a pretty good deal! It could be a major incentive for people to use photovoltaics. And the more photovoltaics we use, the more will be built; the more that are built, the cheaper it becomes."

10 Million Solar Roofs

If this goes forward, it will be a great way to stimulate development in solar more evenly across the nation, creating jobs, and adding clean energy capacity in a sort of easily digestible, piecemeal fashion.

In essence, this is a quick, relatively efficient, relatively inexpensive way to create clean energy and jobs. To say that we need more senators with vision like Sanders' may be the understatement of the year.

Germany Runs Out of Solar Due to Generous Feed-In Tariff (November 28th, 2009)
A burst of new business at the end of 2009 put Germany close to adding a record of solar power to the grid, according to the head of Germany’s BSW solar industry association, Carsten Koernig. He estimates that in this year alone; it will be very close to 3 Gigawatts. While he is not sure what the final end-of-year number will be, he is sure of one fact. It can’t be over 3 gigawatts, simply because there is no more capacity than that in the pipeline. German supplies have completely sold out. Demand for parts, especially, and equipment such as inverters has outstripped supply. Germany’s very consumer-oriented feed-in tariff legislation makes it profitable for any homeowner to install panels on their roofs to supply the grid - - and so they do just that. More than 40,000 people work in the photovoltaic industry. The 2008 record solar installed was 1.6 GW, bringing Germany’s total to 5.3 GW; one third of the world’s 15 GW of solar power. This year’s 3 gigawatts could propel it to half the world’s solar.Part of the increase in end-of year sales was was due to pent-up demand as the financial crisis starts to ease in Germany; but part of it was last-minute homeowners and solar investors getting into the action before 2010, when the Feed-in Tariff rates will step down 10%.Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act has required power companies to buy all the energy produced by anyone making renewable power, at a fixed above-market price for 20 years. This payment started out in 2003 as 3 times what the electricity consumer would normally pay for electricity, then went down to 2 times the retail rate. Even after it goes down 10% next year this still amounts to well over what the electricity customer pays. A surcharge of $1.67 on the monthly bill does not begin to cover that extra cost to the utility; but the nation shares in the Common Good of lowering carbon emissions.

Solar power drops to $1 per watt, nears parity with oil. Where's the media coverage? (March 30, 2009)
Why isn't the major media trumpeting the astonishing news that the price of solar power has dropped close that of oil? We can now finally wean ourselves of dependence on foreign oil. Solar energy costs have dropped steadily and consistently over the past 30 years. In the late 1970s solar energy cost $100 per watt. Even though the price with the newest solar technology has now fallen to under $1 per watt, that price will almost certainly continue to drop. Below are key excerpts of an article on solar energy breaking the $1 per watt barrier, as reported in Popular Mechanics, one of the few major media publications to publish this exciting, milestone story. (...) Isn't it interesting how pessimistic this article is? A major breakthrough like this, which should be making exciting front page headlines around the world, instead gets relegated to a pessimistic review. If the government and investors poured money into this exciting new technology, they would obviously be able to quickly scale up manufacturing capabilities and bring the price down through mass production. Who wouldn't want solar panels on their roof if it was actually cheaper than oil? Could it be that powerful interests don't want people talking about this? Sadly, money and greed often trump innovation in the politics of energy. When certain exceedingly wealthy members of the power elite stand to lose literally billions of dollars in oil revenue if a new energy technology threatens their profits, they will do everything in their power to stop it. As one example, a friend of mine is an amazing genius who ran a $7 million company which was developing a new energy technology which would make oil obsolete. Among many threats and intimidations my friend received, he had his home and offices ransacked, and a bullet hole put through his office window. I went to his home and personally witnessed the aftermath there. They succeeded in stopping him. I know of many other inventors who have had a similar fate. The Sword and the Shield: Surround Russia and China with Mobile "Missile Defense" Systems

By Bruce Gagnon - February 5, 2010

Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space

The latest news is that Romania will be hosting the U.S. Army's ground-based "missile defense" systems. Russia is not pleased with these developments.

These same Army Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) systems are going to be deployed in Taiwan as the U.S. continues its military encirclement of China. U.S. PAC-3 systems have already been deployed in Japan and South Korea.

The Standard Missile-3 (SM-3), already in the Persian Gulf and soon to be permanently based on Navy Aegis destroyers in the Baltic, South China, Mediterranean and Black Seas, has a range of 500 kilometers but can be enhanced for longer distances. The missile was used by the U.S. Navy to destroy a satellite 130 miles above the Pacific Ocean in February of 2008 in a test viewed by Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. "The satellite was unlike any target the system was designed to go after....The satellite was in orbit rather than on a ballistic trajectory. Also, the satellite was traveling at incredible speeds," Mullen said.

Translation: the SM-3 also has "anti-satellite" (ASAT) weapons capability. That means the Pentagon can use the Aegis-based missile to knock out Russian or Chinese satellites as part of a first-strike attack.

News that the U.S. is about to deploy a PAC-3 missile battery in Poland led Russia's ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, to recently state: "Do they really think that we will calmly watch the location of a rocket system, at a distance of 60 km from Kaliningrad?" The deployment of SM-3, with several times the reach of the Patriot, on land and sea in the same neighborhood will only makes matters more dangerous.

The official authorization of Patriot transfers to Taiwan - the missiles are produced by Raytheon Company headquartered in Massachusetts, whose former vice president of Government Operations and Strategy William Lynn is now Obama's Deputy Secretary of Defense - resulted in China's vice foreign minister, He Yafei, saying "We believe this move endangers China's national security." Luo Yuan, senior researcher with the Chinese Academy of Military Science, added "The U.S. action gives China a justified cause to increase its national defense expenditure, to enhance the development and purchase of weapons, and to accelerate its modernization process in national defense....China did nothing to threaten the U.S., why should the US challenge our core strategic interests?"

William Lynn delivered a speech in Washington, DC on January 21, where he demanded that Congress "put the Defense Department on a permanent footing to fight both low-intensity conflicts to maintaining air dominance and the ability to strike any target on Earth at any time....The next air warfare priority for the Pentagon is developing a next-generation, deep-penetrating strike capability that can overcome advanced air defenses."

The new Prompt Global Strike system is designed to accomplish just those objectives.

So the strategy is clear. Surround Russia and China with mobile "missile defense" systems whose job is to take out their retaliatory capability after a U.S. first-strike against their nuclear weapons. Russia and China then build counter-measures to the U.S. missile defense systems and then the Pentagon in return counters with the new "global strike" systems that are today under development.

All this means one thing - an extended arms race with Russia and China which will mean huge profits for the weapons industry and the very likely reality that no effective arms control treaties will be negotiated during this administration. Why would Russia and China negotiate to seriously reduce their nuclear arsenals when the U.S. is surrounding them with missile defense and building new global strike systems?

The U.S. war state (supported and funded by Democrats and Republicans) has become a pariah on this planet. You can dress it up nice with a smiling Obama but in the end one has to judge the U.S. by its deeds.

(Parts of this were written by Rick Rozoff in a piece called U.S. Extends Missile Buildup From Poland And Taiwan To Persian Gulf)

US' Expanded Weapons Stockpiling in Israel

10 February 2010 - by Nora Barrows-Friedman

Sameh Habeeb, a young, independent, Palestinian journalist, lived in a modest house in the middle of Gaza City in December 2008. From his bedroom window, Habeeb reported to international news outlets exactly what he saw night after night during Israel's lethal 22-day assault. On one occasion, Habeeb told Truthout, "the Apache helicopter gunship hovered less than 200 meters away from us. The children, my brothers and sisters, were hiding in the corners of the house, taking shelter. It was horrendous. The sky was dark; there was nothing but the sound and the red lights of the Apache, the screams of the children, and the sound of the bombings close by. The house shook like an earthquake every time there was a bombing. I thought I was going to be the next victim. We smelled the gun powder everywhere."

Approximately 1,400 Palestinians were killed - including more than 300 children - and over 5,000 people were wounded in the 2008-2009 Israeli attacks, dubbed Operation Cast Lead, using advanced American-made weaponry. Now, a year later, Israel and the United States have agreed to a weapons stockpiling deal that will store $800 million worth of American-made arms and military equipment on Israeli soil.

According to a January 11 report in the weekly paper Defense News, the Obama administration previously mapped out a plan that would place $400 million worth of military arsenal in Israel, but that project was exactly doubled after a meeting in December between the Israeli military's technology and logistics branch, and Rear Adm. Andy Brown, logistics director of the US Army European Command.

Included in this agreement is the caveat that Israel, after approval from the US government, would be able to access the American weapon and ammunition stockpile in case of a military "emergency." The terms and definition of such an "emergency," including against whom the weaponry could be used, remain unclear.

Barbara Opall-Rome reported, "[w]artime emergencies warranting Israeli use of such weaponry typically require Israel to reimburse Washington under Foreign Military Sales procedures," but that, conveniently for Israel, "[r]eimbursement costs are funded through annual U.S. military grant aid to Israel."

During the election campaign and over this last year in office, the Obama administration has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to what it calls "Israel's security."

An anonymous US defense official stated that Washington believes that "[American] economics and inflation were taking their toll on the Israel-based prepositioning," thereby limiting - in relative terms - the procurement of weapons caches by the Israeli government, up until this point.

Missiles, armored vehicles, aerial ammunition and artillery ordnance have already been stockpiled in Israel since the US Congress began expanding their "forward basing" program in 1990. South Korea remains a US ally state enjoying a similar agreement with the US government. Opall-Rome wrote that American stockpile value in Israel began with "a starting ceiling of $100 million that quickly grew to $300 million following the 1991 war in Iraq ... Under the new agreement, Israel not only gains access to more US stockpiles, but enjoys greater latitude in the categories and specific types of weaponry it can request for in-country storage."

Raytheon, a weapons manufacturer headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, is a prime contractor for US-administered arms deals with Israel. Among Raytheon's arsenal of unconventional weapons is the 2.2-ton GBU 28 "bunker-buster," "mini-nuke" bomb that was used against Iraq in 1991, and swiftly dispatched to Israel during the height of the 2006 attacks against Lebanon. The weapon can blast through 100 feet of earth and 20 feet of solid concrete. Raytheon's spokesperson refused to answer Truthout's questions regarding its expanding relationship with Israel. His response to a query about Raytheon's possible contribution of arsenal to this $800 million stockpiling agreement was a curt "no comment," and he told Truthout to "ask the US government" about further details.

Ohio Democratic Congressman Dennis Kucinich told Truthout that there is no oversight process toward which specific weapons will be part of stockpiling deals with Israel. "There is no monitoring," he said. He noted that these weapons stockpiling agreements send a worrisome message to the people in the region. "What's troubling is the pullback from serious diplomatic initiatives ... and the reliance on weapons to solve what are really diplomatic issues. There's no doubt that there is some strategic consideration at work. And there is the fact that several US administrations now have failed to enforce the Arms Export Control Act. The policies are not consonant with peace," he continued. "They're consonant with war. "

In the December 2009 Congressional Research Report to Congress, prepared for US representatives preceding their vote in the House to approve funding for such programs, it is pointed out that Israel was designated in 1998 as a "major non-NATO ally," which "qualifies" the state to receive excess defense articles under Section 516 of the Foreign Assistance Act and Section 23(a) of the Arms Export Control Act.

Frida Berrigan of the US Arms Trade Resource Center at the World Policy Institute in New York noted that the US State Department originally raised questions about Israel's use of cluster bomb munitions during the 2006 Lebanon assault. Berrigan pointed out that the State Department said it was concerned about the amount of bomblets that were dropped. "But after a year of its own investigation," Berrigan told Truthout, "the results were officially 'inconclusive.' A report was forwarded to the US Congress, and that's where it ended. If Israel uses these [US-made] weapons, it is defined under 'defense' as far as Congress is concerned. Because under the Arms Export Controls Act, there are no set terms of activities, no definition of what 'defense' really means."

Berrigan said that, although Congress routinely questions other weapons packages to allied countries, military aid to Israel is rarely, if ever, challenged. "There is a fast-track mechanism [for Israel] in place," she added.

This move to double American weaponry and military equipment stockpiles on Israeli soil comes on the heels of Obama's recent signing of a $30 billion, ten-year agreement for an expanded military aid package to the Israeli government. The first installment of the aid package, $2.775 billion, was signed over in December by President Obama, and was earmarked completely for Israel's military budget instead of the prior allocation to both civilian and military infrastructure. This massive military package is over and above the annual $3.1 billion in loan guarantees to Israel that the Obama administration plans to continue.

As a part of the ten-year agreement, Israel is required to contract 75 percent of the package toward the purchase of American-made military equipment and ammunition, intended to further subsidize US weapons manufacturers. This arrangement was conceived by the Bush administration and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and was designed, Berrigan explained, to "lock in" the US-Israeli military relationship, tying the hands of the forthcoming US administration. "This benefits only the American weapons manufacturers," she said, "and it sets the Obama administration up with a solid framework which Israel sought out and insisted on ahead of time. Once again, the United States was eager to comply."

Meanwhile, as US-led wars in the region proliferate, this expansion of weapons stockpiles in Israel will surely be viewed as a growing threat to neighboring countries. "If we're forward-basing [for the wars in] Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan," former high-level CIA analyst Ray McGovern told Truthout, "the Iranians, the Russians and the Chinese will be worried. With this policy, we're alienating so many people."

Berrigan said that, within this context, it is important to question the strategic interest that the United States has in maintaining a close military partnership with Israel. "The relationship with Israel is not helping us win the hearts and minds of people in Iraq and Afghanistan," she said. "People don't believe our rhetoric. When President Obama talks about global nuclear disarmament, everyone in the Arab-Muslim world knows that Israel has nuclear weapons, and that the US has allowed Israel to have them. The Obama administration is cutting every budget but the military's, and continuing to give billions to Israel and Egypt. That's money that could be much better spent in Haiti, or in any neighborhood in this country. It could build real international institutions that prioritize serving the needs of the world. Even though the American public is not paying attention, the world is."

This stockpiling agreement follows claims by Israeli military officials that Israel's own weapons cache is nearing "dangerously low" levels - especially, they say, after the 2006 offensive against Lebanon. Reports show that, in the last 72 hours of the summer bombing campaign there, when a cease-fire was clearly imminent, Israeli Air Force pilots dropped a reported one million American-made cluster bombs over the Southern region, which continue to explode and injure Lebanese civilians in agricultural and rural village areas to this day. More recently, during the attacks on Gaza, Palestinians were subjected to wide-spread destruction of thousands of homes, apartment buildings, offices, hospitals and schools by relentless aerial bombing campaigns, utilizing conventional and unconventional weaponry from the very same distributors whose wares will be stored in Israel. Israel's wanton use of white phosphorus during the attacks has been widely condemned by international human rights groups, as well as the use of advanced anti-personnel weaponry such as Dense Inert Metal Explosive (DIME) bombs.

Speaking on Flashpoints Radio in June 2009, Dr. Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian physician who treated patients hit by suspected DIME weaponry in Gaza's Al-Shifa Hospital during the Israeli attacks, said he witnessed the effects of this unconventional and highly-lethal technology. "We saw people who were virtually cut in two," Dr. Gilbert reported. "We saw children torn completely apart ...We saw amputations that looked like a huge ax had cut off their extremities. The DIME weapon is made from a tungsten metal alloy in a composite casting, and it's shot by small rockets. The mechanism of the explosion is a chain reaction: it causes the metal to evaporate and dissipate. It's made for targeted killing. We could not [categorize] them as anything else other than DIME bombs."

Extensive research has shown that DIME bombs are also highly carcinogenic, continuing to lethally affect the victim long after the initial strike.

Israel denies its military's use of DIME bombs against civilians in Gaza, but independent European researchers and medical eyewitnesses, such as Dr. Gilbert, insist that this weapon was indeed used indiscriminately.

At the same time as it claims a shortage of ammunition and equipment, while receiving several billions of US taxpayer dollars for its military budget, Israel is currently preparing the launch of what officials are calling the "Iron Dome" system, reportedly capable of intercepting short-range artillery shells and homemade rockets along the northern border with Lebanon and the southern borders with the occupied Gaza strip. According to Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak, the system will be integrated into the Israeli military by this summer. That project is reported to cost at least $215 million.

Habeeb of Gaza, however, remains extremely worried about this new era of weapons proliferation plans between Israel and the US. "Israel already has enough weapons to destroy the whole world," he said. "As a Palestinian, I thought Obama would send us the results of his change, which was peace. Instead, we get missiles."

Obama's Budget Calls for Billions in New Spending for Drones (2 February 2010)
This is how major US defense contractors reacted to the unveiling of President Barack Obama's fiscal year 2011 spending plan for the Pentagon, part of the president's overall $3.8 trillion budget proposal.Shares of General Dynamics, a maker of military aircraft, submarines and munitions, rose 3.9 percent and closed at $69.43 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange, the uptick due in large part to additional spending on the war in Afghanistan, according to Sanford Bernstein, a financial research firm. (...) For the first time, according to The Los Angeles Times, the Air Force is proposing the purchase of more drones than combat aircraft and will double the production of the MQ-9 Reaper, "a bigger, more heavily armed version of the Predator drone, to 48. The Army will also buy 26 extended-range Predators." "The expansion will allow the military to increase unmanned patrols - the number of planes in the air at once - to 65, up from its current limit of 37," The Los Angeles Times noted. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told reporters Monday that the use of drones will continue to increase "even as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan eventually wind down.""The more we have used them, the more we have identified their potential in a broader and broader set of circumstances," Gates said. Spending on the Predator and Reaper drones will jump from $877.5 million in 2010 to $1.4 billion next year. The budget also says “a major goal of the administration is to provide the troops with the most effective and modern equipment possible.” “To accomplish this, the 2011 Budget continues to develop and procure many advanced weapons systems that support both today’s wars and future conflicts,” according to the budget. “These include: the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a new family of ground vehicles, new ships such as the next generation ballistic missile submarine, and the P-8 aircraft.”In a speech at West Point last year announcing his revised strategy for the Afghanistan, Obama said, "we can't simply afford to ignore the price of these wars."But that's exactly what it appears the Obama administration has done. Spending on the wars for the next two years is projected to hover around $159 billion, which is only slightly less than what the Bush administration spent during its last years in office. The proposed spending for 2011 is three times more than what Obama projected it to be a year ago and the soaring costs of juggling two wars has a major impact on new deficit numbers. While Obama said in his State of the Union address last week that creating new jobs for Americans is now his "number one priority for 2010," the massive defense spending his budget proposes will actually do the opposite, according to Dean Baker, co-director for the Center for Economic and Policy Research. In a report published on Truthout last November, Baker said, "defense spending means that the government is pulling away resources from the uses determined by the market and instead using them to buy weapons and supplies and to pay for soldiers and other military personnel. In standard economic models, defense spending is a direct drain on the economy, reducing efficiency, slowing growth and costing jobs." CLIP

The US Military: A Mindset of Barbarism - Part 1 by Dahr Jamail (6 February 2010)
On December 27, in the eastern Kunar region of Afghanistan, ten Afghans, eight of whom were schoolchildren, were dragged from their beds and shot by US forces during a nighttime raid. Afghan government investigators said the eight students were aged from 11 to 17 years. This incident is but one example of countless atrocities US military personnel have carried out in the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. In Iraq, US military personnel torturing detainees in Abu Ghraib, Iraqi civilians suffering the violence meted out by US forces, or US forces detaining schoolchildren in Baghdad, the list of atrocities is seemingly endless. Dr. Stjepan Mestrovic, a professor of sociology at Texas A&M University, has written three books on US misconduct in Iraq: "The Trials of Abu Ghraib: An Expert Witness Account of Shame and Honor," "Rules of Engagement?: Operation Iron Triangle, Iraq," and "The 'Good Soldier' on Trial: A Sociological Study of Misconduct by the US Military Pertaining to Operation Iron Triangle, Iraq." He has three degrees from Harvard University, including a Master's degree in clinical psychology, and has been an expert witness in psychology and sociology at several Article 32 hearings, courts-martial, and clemency hearings involving US soldiers accused of committing crimes of war in Iraq, including the trials of prison guards involved in the Abu Ghraib scandal. Dr. Mestrovic's books meticulously document how the US Army, as an institution, has become dysfunctional, and how illegal rules of engagement (ROE) are issued by officers and politicians at the top of the Army's hierarchy, but only low-ranking soldiers are punished for carrying out those same rules and orders. As an example, in one of the several hearings Dr. Mestrovic has attended as an expert witness, US soldiers openly admitted they had shot a 75-year-old man who had emerged unarmed from his house, but because the soldiers were following the rule to shoot all "military aged males," neither they nor their officers were charged for that death. Truthout recently conducted an extended two-part interview with Dr. Mestrovic. Truthout: Can you describe the process that occurs within the US military that leads to a mindset that allows atrocities to occur? How is it that soldiers commit atrocities like murdering an unarmed 75-year-old Iraqi man? CLIP - ENLIGHTENING ARTICLE ABOUT WHY THE BLOOD DRENCHED HISTORY OF THE U.S. MILITARY ESTABLISHMENT COULD BUT LEAD TO THE DYSFUNCTIONAL BUT HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED KILLING BEAST IT IS TODAY. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE LOCAL PANDORA POPULATION IN THE AVATAR MOVIE IS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT THE BRAINWASHED GOONS OF THE US MILITARY BLINDLY DO EVERY DAY - JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS! - Read Part 2 HERE - Here is an excerpt: "Truthout: What did you find in your research about Operation Iron Triangle that led to that atrocity? Dr. Mestrovic: Well, that’s the problem: the killings were apparently routine and were not regarded as an atrocity. Soldiers told me that they were routinely sent out on missions to kill designated “targets.” Their graphic descriptions included finding a shopkeeper and killing him in front of his wife and children. The court transcripts also refer to testimony of “kill-kill” orders, which apparently mean that the target does not have the option to surrender (which would be a “kill-capture” order). In effect, a lot of the missions seem to amount to the “execution squads” that Vice President Cheney mentioned while he was in office. So, in the eyes of the Army, government and soldiers, missions of this sort were not considered “atrocities.”

Tomgram: Nick Turse, America's Shadowy Base World EYE-POPPING NUMBERS!
Once is an anomaly; twice is the beginning of a pattern. Right now, we’re seeing the same sequence of events for the second time in less than a decade, and it looks like the signature American way of war in our time is coming into focus. In 2003, when the Bush administration invaded Iraq, the Pentagon already had on its drawing boards plans for building a series of permanent mega-bases in that country. (They were charmingly called “enduring camps.”) Once Baghdad fell and it turned out that, Saddam Hussein or no, the U.S. was going to have to fight rather than settle in and let the good times roll, hundreds of micro-bases were added to the mega ones -- 106 of them by 2005, more than 300 in all. Then, in 2005, Washington decided to trade in its embassy in one of Saddam’s old palaces for something a little spiffier. In its place, on a 104-acre plot by the Tigris River in the middle of Baghdad, for at least three-quarters of a billion dollars after cost overruns, it built the largest, most expensive embassy on the planet. It was planned for a staff of 1,000 “diplomats” with all the accoutrements of the good life and plenty of hired help. (Even now, despite much discussion about “ending” the American role in Iraq, further plans are reportedly being made for the embassy’s staff to double.) This was clearly to be U.S. mission control for the Greater Middle East. Building of this expansive kind is, of course, a staggering imperial undertaking. It implies a global power with resources beyond measure, for which waste means nothing. The mega-bases and the embassy were, in that sense, American wonders of the world, our own ziggurat-equivalents in Mesopotamia, right down to the multiple PXs, familiar fast food outlets, and miniature golf. No empire had ever launched a base-building program quite like it (if, that is, you leave out the precursor to this whole experience, the U.S. in Vietnam in the 1960s). The Iraqi base-building project alone had already absorbed several billion taxpayer dollars in just the first half-year of construction in 2003. But it did look like a one-of-a-kind architectural adventure -- until, that is, the “forgotten war,” the one in Afghanistan, came back into view. Starting in 2008, base building ramped up there, went into overdrive in 2009, and hasn’t come out of it yet. The result: according to Nick Turse, author of The Complex: How the Military Invades Our Everyday Lives, an even more staggering base-construction splurge, and with it, the announcement last year that another monster embassy would go up, this time in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, for another cool near-billion. (The already large U.S. embassy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, would also be further expanded to the tune of $175-200 million). And keep in mind that none of this even includes the huge ring of supporting bases for America’s Afghan and Iraq operations in the Persian Gulf, South and Central Asia, and even on the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Does anyone see a pattern here? The American military must be the heaviest occupation force in history. According to reports, it now has 1.5 million pieces of equipment, micro to mega, to get out of Iraq as U.S. forces draw down. This is war and occupation of Guinness World Records proportions, a veritable Ripley’s Believe It Or Not of imperial military construction. The only thing that won’t make the record books, of course, is the results: in war-fighting terms, in both Afghanistan and Iraq, the world’s mightiest military has been battled to at least a draw by rag-tag, lightly armed, minority insurgencies. Who would believe any of this, if it weren’t happening? Given how our media reports on such things, who would even know about it if you didn’t read it first here at

The 700 Military Bases of Afghanistan Black Sites in the Empire of Bases (February 9, 2010)
In the nineteenth century, it was a fort used by British forces. In the twentieth century, Soviet troops moved into the crumbling facilities. In December 2009, at this site in the Shinwar district of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province, U.S. troops joined members of the Afghan National Army in preparing the way for the next round of foreign occupation. On its grounds, a new military base is expected to rise, one of hundreds of camps and outposts scattered across the country. Nearly a decade after the Bush administration launched its invasion of Afghanistan, TomDispatch offers the first actual count of American, NATO, and other coalition bases there, as well as facilities used by the Afghan security forces. Such bases range from relatively small sites like Shinwar to mega-bases that resemble small American towns. Today, according to official sources, approximately 700 bases of every size dot the Afghan countryside, and more, like the one in Shinwar, are under construction or soon will be as part of a base-building boom that began last year. Existing in the shadows, rarely reported on and little talked about, this base-building program is nonetheless staggering in size and scope, and heavily dependent on supplies imported from abroad, which means that it is also extraordinarily expensive. It has added significantly to the already long secret list of Pentagon property overseas and raises questions about just how long, after the planned beginning of a drawdown of American forces in 2011, the U.S. will still be garrisoning Afghanistan. 400 Foreign Bases in Afghanistan -- Colonel Wayne Shanks, a spokesman for the U.S.-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), tells TomDispatch that there are, at present, nearly 400 U.S. and coalition bases in Afghanistan, including camps, forward operating bases, and combat outposts. In addition, there are at least 300 Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan National Police (ANP) bases, most of them built, maintained, or supported by the U.S. A small number of the coalition sites are mega-bases like Kandahar Airfield, which boasts one of the busiest runways in the world, and Bagram Air Base, a former Soviet facility that received a makeover, complete with Burger King and Popeyes outlets, and now serves more than 20,000 U.S. troops, in addition to thousands of coalition forces and civilian contractors. (...) Kandahar is just one of many sites currently being upgraded. Exact figures on the number of facilities being enlarged, improved, or hardened are unavailable but, according a spokesman for ISAF, the military plans to expand several more bases to accommodate the increase of troops as part of Afghan War commander Stanley McChrystal’s surge strategy. In addition, at least 12 more bases are slated to be built to help handle the 30,000 extra American troops and thousands of NATO forces beginning to arrive in the country. “Currently we have over $3 billion worth of work going on in Afghanistan,” says Colonel Wilson, “and probably by the summer, when the dust settles from all the uplift, we’ll have about $1.3 billion to $1.4 billion worth of that [in the South].” By comparison, between 2002 and 2008, the Army Corps of Engineers spent more than $4.5 billion on construction projects, most of it base-building, in Afghanistan.
America’s Shadowy Base World -- The Pentagon’s most recent inventory of bases lists a total of 716 overseas sites. These include facilities owned and leased all across the Middle East as well as a significant presence in Europe and Asia, especially Japan and South Korea. Perhaps even more notable than the Pentagon’s impressive public foreign property portfolio are the many sites left off the official inventory. While bases in the Persian Gulf countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates are all listed, one conspicuously absent site is Al-Udeid Air Base, a billion-dollar facility in nearby Qatar, where the U.S. Air Force secretly oversees its on-going unmanned drone wars. The count also does not include any sites in Iraq where, as of August 2009, there were still nearly 300 American bases and outposts. Similarly, U.S. bases in Afghanistan -- a significant percentage of the 400 foreign sites scattered across the country -- are noticeably absent from the Pentagon inventory.Counting the remaining bases in Iraq -- as many as 50 are slated to be operating after President Barack Obama’s August 31, 2010, deadline to remove all U.S. “combat troops” from the country -- and those in Afghanistan, as well as black sites like Al-Udeid, the total number of U.S. bases overseas now must significantly exceed 1,000. Just exactly how many U.S. military bases (and allied facilities used by U.S. forces) are scattered across the globe may never be publicly known. What we do know -- from the experience of bases in Germany, Italy, Japan, and South Korea -- is that, once built, they have a tendency toward permanency that a cessation of hostilities, or even outright peace, has a way of not altering. After nearly a decade of war, close to 700 U.S., allied, and Afghan military bases dot Afghanistan. Until now, however, they have existed as black sites known to few Americans outside the Pentagon. It remains to be seen, a decade into the future, how many of these sites will still be occupied by U.S. and allied troops and whose flag will be planted on the ever-shifting British-Soviet-U.S./Afghan site at Shinwar.

Note from Jean: Here is exactly what the Israeli military intends to do with the stash of US-made military hardware and ammo that Uncle Obama is sending them (see article above). They have determined that before attacking Iran, they need first to eliminate the threat of expected retaliations To an attack on Iran by Hezbollah fighters (Iran's proxies) in Lebanon and Syria. Then, once they have "fixed" this problem, they would probably get the green light from the Pentagon to take on Iran.

A devastating war between Israel & Hezbollah is on the horizon

Elias Bejjani - February 08, 2010

*Israel is preparing to invade Lebanon with massive ground troops.

Israel will not spare any kind of weaponry, including phosphorous and cluster bombs.

Israel is secretly evacuating its northern region residents.

Israel intends to create a new security zone inside Lebanon, south of the Litani to enhance her long term occupation.

While the war of words is escalating around the clock between Israel on the one side and Hezbollah and Syria on the other, analysts in the Middle East and Europe strongly believe that war is inevitable and will break out within a few months.

In this scary context, senior Lebanese sources told the Saudi daily Al-Okaz that Hezbollah has announced emergency readiness in all areas of the country where it operates. Senior figures of the organization were asked to exercise greater caution in their movements amid fears they would be targeted by Israel. Hezbollah's leaders are bragging that they are capable of defeating, humiliating and destroying Israel´s war machine.

Meanwhile, the verbal sparring between Jerusalem and Damascus continued over the weekend, even if in lower tones. The official Syrian newspaper Tishrin said in an editorial that "the threats from Israel make it clear that it intends to initiate a new war whose limits are unknown." The editorial added that "death and destruction may occur if Israel responds to the logic of some of its leaders, in whose veins flows crime. Damascus is ready for any path that Israel chooses, whether it is peace or war." The editorial's author is the newspaper's editor-in-chief, who wrote that the "logic of war and threats is the dominant logic in Israel. Talk of peace is chatter void of substance that is mere media propaganda. There is no real political decision for peace in the Zionist entity, despite promises of this, on the basis of restoring rights to their rightful owners."

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem last week threatened that an Israeli attack against Syria would be total war. His Israeli counterpart, Avigdor Lieberman, warned that Syrian President Bashar Assad and his family would not remain in power as a result of the next war.

In a report written by Hamid Ghoriafi, Middle East analyst and journalist, that was published today by the Kuwaiti Daily Al-Seyassah, Ghoriafi drew a very dim picture for the whole situation and predicted a very devastating imminent war that will be according to the Israelis the last one with on their northern borders. Below are some excerpts from this report:

Reliable European intelligence reports in London unveiled on Monday an extensive secretive Israeli ongoing operation to evacuate hundreds of families living in the Galilee settlements adjacent to the border with Lebanon to safer locations inside Israel, especially west Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and surrounding areas. These families are transported by trucks and buses and priority is given to families with many children, the elderly and the physically disabled. The evacuees' houses are put under the control of the Northern Military Command for reasons not yet known."

A German report that was recently distributed to those concerned in the European Union capitals revealed that there is a serious Israeli military intention to reoccupy the former border strip inside Lebanon with a distance of 5 to 6 kilometers. This strip was known as the "security zone" before the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000. Initially it was established in the aftermath of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and occupation of her capital in 1982. The aim was to create a semi-demilitarized zone along the area of Lebanese Christian and some Shiite villages that are scattered near the Israeli border in a bid to safeguard the Jewish settlements from shelling and infiltration.

The same intelligence report quoted Israeli Defense Ministry sources saying that their military engineers have finished putting designs for building two military airports inside the Lebanese "new security zone", which will stretch temporally up to the Litani River in the early stages of the war. This area has been under the control of the UNIFIL troops since 2006. Israel expects that the UNIFIL troops will withdraw in case the war breaks out. The first airport will be built on the middle and eastern region boundaries towards Shabaa Farms, Mount Hermon; and the second in the western sector region towards the coastal town of Naqoura.

All technical and logistic equipments required for the erection of these two airports are already in locations situated behind the front lines of the Israeli army that is extensively present on the northern border. Analysts say that this kind of preparations gives the impression that Israel is definitely planning for a long-term occupation to the south Litani area. The Israeli occupation accordingly will not endonce the coming military operations cease."

The report quoted the Israeli defense sources saying that the war will actually begin in the northern region of the Litani Rriver and all though the Bekaa Valley and eastern Lebanese mountainous areas that separate Syria and Lebanon because the presence of Hezbollah in the south of the Litani is no longer as heavy as it was in 2006. The UNIFIL troops took control of this region after the 2006 war. The report disclosed that the backbone of the coming Israeli war will be based on two plans:

The first plan is for extensive jet plane aerial bombardment of Hezbollah's scattered military weaponry caches and missile bases with phosphorus and cluster bombs, replicating the kind of devastation the southern suburbs of Beirut (Hezbollah's ministate) suffered during the 2006 war.

The second plan is to execute for the first time, air-landing operations behind Hezbollah's lines after weakening and destroying its bases in the south, Bekaa Valley and Beirut.

These two plans in contrast to the 2006 war aim to practically occupy many Lebanese areas and locations as was the situation in the 1982 invasion led by Ariel Sharon, who occupied Beirut and its surrounding mountainous and coastal areas.

British sources claimed that another European intelligence report prepared by the UNIFIL French contingent in southern Lebanon revealed that the Israeli army command has made ready another SOS war scenario to deal with Syrian and the Palestinian troops who might cross from Syria and enter the Bekaa Valley equipped with advanced anti-aircraft missiles to hunt the Israeli jets.

The scenario speaks about Israeli war inside Syria in a bid to completely destroy these troops. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem last week threatened that an Israeli attack against Syria would lead to total war.

The report said that 60% of the Israeli air force has already been put on full alert and is well prepared for action on the first day of the coming war in an extensive attack on the Lebanese. Israel is planning to fulfill all its objectives and finish the war within a few weeks. The remaining 40% of the Israeli air force will be ready to join in swiftly and effectively if the Syrian army gets involved.

The same French report added that Israel is determined to make this war the last one on her northern borders. The Jewish military command will not spare any advanced and destructive kind of weaponry that is stored in its caches. Hezbollah will not be the only target within the Shiite regions that are under its control, but also the Lebanese army, all Lebanese institutions and infrastructure. Israel is well convinced that Hezbollah is in full control of the Lebanese government and accordingly its army will not spare the country's infrastructure as was the situation in the 2006 war. Israel is planning to end Hezbollah the same way it ended the PLO in the 1982-1983 war.

A Defensive Buildup in the Gulf (8 FEBRUARY 2010)
This weekend's newspapers were filled with stories about how the United States is providing ballistic missile defense (BMD) to four countries on the Arabian Peninsula. The New York Times carried a front-page story on the United States providing anti-missile defenses to Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman, as well as stationing BMD-capable, Aegis-equipped warships in the Persian Gulf.Meanwhile, the front page of The Washington Post carried a story saying that "the Obama administration is quietly working with Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf allies to speed up arms sales and rapidly upgrade defenses for oil terminals and other key infrastructure in a bid to thwart future attacks by Iran, according to former and current U.S. and Middle Eastern government officials."Obviously, the work is no longer "quiet." In fact, Washington has been publicly engaged in upgrading defensive systems in the area for some time. Central Command head Gen. David Petraeus recently said the four countries named by the Times were receiving BMD-capable Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) batteries, and at the end of October the United States carried out its largest-ever military exercises with Israel, known as Juniper Cobra.More interesting than the stories themselves was the Obama administration's decision to launch a major public relations campaign this weekend regarding these moves. And the most intriguing question out of all this is why the administration decided to call everyone's attention to these defensive measures while not mentioning any offensive options. (...) The Israelis want Iran's nuclear program destroyed, but they do not want to be the ones to try to do it. Only the United States has the force needed to carry out the strike conventionally. But like the Bush administration, the Obama administration is not confident in its ability to remove the Iranian program surgically. Washington is concerned that any air campaign would have an indeterminate outcome and would require extremely difficult ground operations to determine the strikes' success or failure. Perhaps even more complicated is the U.S. ability to manage the consequences, such as a potential attempt by Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian meddling in already extremely delicate situations in Iraq and Afghanistan. As Iran does not threaten the United States, the United States therefore is in no hurry to initiate combat. And so the United States has launched a public relations campaign about defensive measures, hoping to affect Iranian calculations while remaining content to let the game play itself out. CLIP

Pentagon Looks to Breed Immortal ‘Synthetic Organisms,’ Molecular Kill-Switch Included

By Katie Drummond - February 5, 2010

The Pentagon’s mad science arm may have come up with its most radical project yet. Darpa is looking to re-write the laws of evolution to the military’s advantage, creating “synthetic organisms” that can live forever — or can be killed with the flick of a molecular switch.

As part of its budget for the next year, Darpa is investing $6 million into a project called BioDesign, with the goal of eliminating “the randomness of natural evolutionary advancement.” The plan would assemble the latest bio-tech knowledge to come up with living, breathing creatures that are genetically engineered to “produce the intended biological effect.” Darpa wants the organisms to be fortified with molecules that bolster cell resistance to death, so that the lab-monsters can “ultimately be programmed to live indefinitely.”

Of course, Darpa’s got to prevent the super-species from being swayed to do enemy work — so they’ll encode loyalty right into DNA, by developing genetically programmed locks to create “tamper proof” cells. Plus, the synthetic organism will be traceable, using some kind of DNA manipulation, “similar to a serial number on a handgun.” And if that doesn’t work, don’t worry. In case Darpa’s plan somehow goes horribly awry, they’re also tossing in a last-resort, genetically-coded kill switch:

Develop strategies to create a synthetic organism “self-destruct” option to be implemented upon nefarious removal of organism.

The project comes as Darpa also plans to throw $20 million into a new synthetic biology program, and $7.5 million into “increasing by several decades the speed with which we sequence, analyze and functionally edit cellular genomes.”

Of course, Darpa’s up against some vexing, fundamental laws of nature — not to mention bioethics — as they embark on the lab beast program. First, they might want to rethink the idea of evolution as a random series of events, says NYU biology professor David Fitch. “Evolution by selection is nota random process at all, and is actually a hugely efficient design algorithm used extensively in computation and engineering,” he e-mails Danger Room.

Even if Darpa manages to overcome the inherent intelligence of evolutionary processes, overcoming inevitable death can be tricky. Just ask all the other research teams who’ve made stabs at it, trying everything from cell starvation to hormone treatments. Gene therapy, where artificial genes are inserted into an organism to boost cell life, are the latest and greatest in life-extension science, but they’ve only been proven to extend lifespan by 20 percent in rats.

But suppose gene therapy makes major strides, and Darpa does manage to get the evolutionary science right. They’ll also have a major ethical hurdle to jump. Synthetic biology researchers are already facing the same questions, as a 2009 summary from the Synthetic Biology Project reports:

The concern that humans might be overreaching when we create organisms that never before existed can be a safety concern, but it also returns us to disagreements about what is our proper role in the natural world (a debate largely about non-physical harms or harms to well-being).

Even expert molecular geneticists don’t know what to make of the project. Either that, or they’re scared Darpa might sic a bio-bot on them. “I would love to comment, but unfortunately Darpa has installed a kill switch in me,” one unnamed expert tells Danger Room.

This article has elicited a great deal of comments. Worth checking them out...

How Long Till Human-Level AI? What Do the Experts Say? (February 5, 2010)
When will human-level AIs finally arrive? We don’t mean the narrow-AI software that already runs our trading systems, video games, battlebots and fraud detection systems. Those are great as far as they go, but when will we have really intelligent systems like C3PO, R2D2 and even beyond? When will we have Artificial General Intelligences (AGIs) we can talk to? Ones as smart as we are, or smarter?Well, as Yogi Berra said, “it’s tough to predict, especially about the future.” But what do experts working on human-level AI think? To find out, we surveyed a number of leading specialists at the Artificial General Intelligence conference (AGI-09) in Washington DC in March 2009. These are the experts most involved in working toward the advanced AIs we’re talking about. Of course, on matters like these, even expert judgments are highly uncertain and must be taken with multiple grains of salt — nevertheless, expert opinion is one of the best sources of guidance we have. Their predictions about AGI might not come true, but they have so much relevant expertise that we should give their predictions careful consideration. (...) The majority of the experts who participated in our study were optimistic about AGI coming fairly quickly, although a few were more pessimistic about the timing. It is worth noting, however, that all the experts in our study, even the most pessimistic ones, gave at least a 10% chance of some AGI milestones being achieved within a few decades. CLIP

It Is Now Official: The U.S. Is A Police State

By Paul Craig Roberts - February 09, 2010

Americans have been losing the protection of law for years. In the 21st century the loss of legal protections accelerated with the Bush administration’s “war on terror,” which continues under the Obama administration and is essentially a war on the Constitution and U.S. civil liberties.

The Bush regime was determined to vitiate habeas corpus in order to hold people indefinitely without bringing charges. The regime had acquired hundreds of prisoners by paying a bounty for “terrorists.” Afghan warlords and thugs responded to the financial incentive by grabbing unprotected people and selling them to the Americans.

The Bush regime needed to hold the prisoners without charges because it had no evidence against the people and did not want to admit that the U.S. government had stupidly paid warlords and thugs to kidnap innocent people. In addition, the Bush regime needed “terrorists” prisoners in order to prove that there was a terrorist threat.

As there was no evidence against the “detainees” (most have been released without charges after years of detention and abuse), the U.S. government needed a way around U.S. and international laws against torture in order that the government could produce evidence via self-incrimination. The Bush regime found inhumane and totalitarian-minded lawyers and put them to work at the U.S. Department of Justice (sic) to invent arguments that the Bush regime did not need to obey the law.

The Bush regime created a new classification for its detainees that it used to justify denying legal protection and due process to the detainees. As the detainees were not U.S. citizens and were demonized by the regime as “the 760 most dangerous men on earth,” there was little public outcry over the regime’s unconstitutional and inhumane actions.

As our Founding Fathers and a long list of scholars warned, once civil liberties are breached, they are breached for all. Soon U.S. citizens were being held indefinitely in violation of their habeas corpus rights. Dr. Aafia Siddiqui an American citizen of Pakistani origin might have been the first.

Dr. Siddiqui, a scientist educated at MIT and Brandeis University, was seized in Pakistan for no known reason, sent to Afghanistan, and was held secretly for five years in the U.S. military’s notorious Bagram prison in Afghanistan. Her three young children were with her at the time she was abducted, one an eight-month old baby. She has no idea what has become of her two youngest children. Her oldest child, 7 years old, was also incarcerated in Bagram and subjected to similar abuse and horrors.

Siddiqui has never been charged with any terrorism-related offense. A British journalist, hearing her piercing screams as she was being tortured, disclosed her presence.

An embarrassed U.S. government responded to the disclosure by sending Siddiqui to the U.S. for trial on the trumped-up charge that while a captive, she grabbed a U.S. soldier’s rifle and fired two shots attempting to shoot him. The charge apparently originated as a U.S. soldier’s excuse for shooting Dr. Siddiqui twice in the stomach resulting in her near death.

On February 4, Dr. Siddiqui was convicted by a New York jury for attempted murder. The only evidence presented against her was the charge itself and an unsubstantiated claim that she had once taken a pistol-firing course at an American firing range. No evidence was presented of her fingerprints on the rifle that this frail and broken 100-pound woman had allegedly seized from an American soldier. No evidence was presented that a weapon was fired, no bullets, no shell casings, no bullet holes. Just an accusation.

Wikipedia has this to say about the trial: “The trial took an unusual turn when an FBI official asserted that the fingerprints taken from the rifle, which was purportedly used by Aafia to shoot at the U.S. interrogators, did not match hers.”

An ignorant and bigoted American jury convicted her for being a Muslim. This is the kind of “justice” that always results when the state hypes fear and demonizes a group.

The people who should have been on trial are the people who abducted her, disappeared her young children, shipped her across international borders, violated her civil liberties, tortured her apparently for the fun of it, raped her, and attempted to murder her with two gunshots to her stomach. Instead, the victim was put on trial and convicted.

This is the unmistakable hallmark of a police state. And this victim is an American citizen.

Anyone can be next. Indeed, on February 3 Dennis Blair, director of National Intelligence told the House Intelligence Committee that it was now “defined policy” that the U.S. government can murder its own citizens on the sole basis of someone in the government’s judgment that an American is a threat. No arrest, no trial, no conviction, just execution on suspicion of being a threat.

This shows how far the police state has advanced. A presidential appointee in the Obama administration tells an important committee of Congress that the executive branch has decided that it can murder American citizens abroad if it thinks they are a threat.

I can hear readers saying the government might as well kill Americans abroad as it kills them at home--Waco, Ruby Ridge, the Black Panthers.

Yes, the U.S. government has murdered its citizens, but Dennis Blair’s “defined policy” is a bold new development. The government, of course, denies that it intended to kill the Branch Davidians, Randy Weaver’s wife and child, or the Black Panthers. The government says that Waco was a terrible tragedy, an unintended result brought on by the Branch Davidians themselves. The government says that Ruby Ridge was Randy Weaver’s fault for not appearing in court on a day that had been miscommunicated to him, The Black Panthers, the government says, were dangerous criminals who insisted on a shoot-out.

In no previous death of a U.S. citizen by the hands of the U.S. government has the government claimed the right to kill Americans without arrest, trial, and conviction of a capital crime.

In contrast, Dennis Blair has told the U.S. Congress that the executive branch has assumed the right to murder Americans who it deems a “threat.”

What defines “threat”? Who will make the decision? What it means is that the government will murder whomever it chooses.

There is no more complete or compelling evidence of a police state than the government announcing that it will murder its own citizens if it views them as a “threat.”

Ironic, isn’t it, that “the war on terror” to make us safe ends in a police state with the government declaring the right to murder American citizens who it regards as a threat.

Note from Jean: Ahmadinejad is provoking the Western world to shore up his failing political fortune at home and is more than happy to see everyone else worked up over his decision - falling into his trap basically - while the rest of the world is all too happy to take the bait because a high-wire confrontation with Iran, with the fig leaf legitimizing blessings of the UN minus China which badly needs Iran's oil, is a perfect smokescreen to deflect their citizens' attention away from the deepening financial meltdown created by their greedy financial operators and governments disempowered by wall to wall corporate lobbying, not to mention the stealthy and pervasive influence of the Zionist criminals. All of which unfortunately translates into a dangerous convergence of forces that could trigger something no one in their right mind would want... unless they deliberately want to have just that. Now it's time for cool heads and bigger hearts to prevail...

Endgame for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran?

By Con Coughlin - 9 Feb 2010

The Iranian president has promised a 'telling blow' against world leaders. But, says Con Coughlin, his recent nuclear posturing is an attempt to shore up his increasingly perilous position at home.

First came the announcement that Iran had successfully launched a space probe carrying two turtles, a hamster and a worm. Then its nuclear scientists announced that they would maintain their defiance of the West by ratcheting up the country's controversial uranium enrichment programme. Finally this was followed by yesterday's announcement from the Iranian Defence Ministry that it will shortly begin production of "advanced" unmanned drones that are capable of carrying out "assaults with high precision" against neighbouring states.

Every year since 1979, millions of Iranians have celebrated Dahe-ye Fajr, the 10 days of dawn, by proclaiming their loyalty to the Islamic revolution. The festival marks the period between the triumphant return of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the revolution's founding father, from exile in Paris on February 1, 1979 and the establishment of the Islamic republic 10 days later. The festivities range from commemorative services held at Khomeini's mausoleum in Tehran's southern suburbs to political rallies proclaiming the revolution's achievements.

But this year the government of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has used the festivities as a platform to issue a succession of headline-grabbing pronouncements. And just to make sure no one misunderstands Mr Ahmadinejad's intentions, the Iranian president has publicly warned that he will mark the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution this Thursday by delivering a "telling blow" to the world's leading powers, a message that hardly serves to reassure Western concerns about Iran's future intentions.

Robert Gates, the US Defence Secretary, yesterday responded by warning that the West should punish Tehran's latest act of defiance on its nuclear programme by toughening up the international sanctions regime, while in London the Foreign Office described Tehran's decision to start enriching uranium to 20 per cent, as opposed to the current level of 3.5 per cent, as a "matter of serious concern".

Iran's current level of enrichment only produces uranium that can be used in nuclear power stations. But by enriching uranium to 20 per cent Iran will be taking a significant step towards producing the highly enriched uranium that is used to make atom bombs. In addition, Iran has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna that it intends to build another 10 uranium enrichment plants.

But before Western governments become too alarmed by Tehran's provocative stance, the regime's recent announcements need to be examined within the context of the country's deepening political turmoil, which many of Mr Ahmadinejad's political opponents confidently predict will surface again during Thursday's climax to this year's anniversary celebrations.

Ever since Mr Ahmadinejad was proclaimed the victor in last summer's hotly disputed presidential election contest, his regime has been besieged by angry protesters who claim his victory was rigged, and that his hardline conservative supporters are denying the Iranian people their proper democratic rights.

In the past the regime has been able to suppress anti-government protests through the highly effective expedient of relying on the brute force of the Revolutionary Guards, the guardians of the Islamic revolution. In both 1999 and 2003, the last time that the regime was seriously challenged by pro-democracy protesters, the demonstrations quickly subsided after the guards broke into student dormitories at Tehran University and hurled protesters to their deaths through the windows.

Similar tactics have been used to crush Iran's pro-reform Green movement, which materialised in the immediate aftermath of last June's elections after

Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the former Iranian prime minister who championed the interests of the reform movement, claimed he had been denied victory by widespread ballot-rigging. Iranian human rights activists claim that up to 500 people have been killed since the elections, a number that is set to rise after the regime last month announced it had begun executing political prisoners accused of participating in last year's protests.

But despite being the victims of the most repressive measures experienced in Iran since the heady days of the 1979 revolution, the Green movement shows no sign of dying down, much to the consternation of Mr Ahmadinejad and his supporters.

Part of the explanation for this is the fact that today's opposition movement has a far broader base than its predecessors. Previous anti-government protests drew heavily on student campuses for their support, whereas today's Green movement has the backing of Iran's prosperous middle classes – the bazaaris – who are as much outraged by Mr Ahmadinejad's woeful mismanagement of the Iranian economy as they are critical of his uncompromising political agenda.

As a consequence, it is no understatement to say that Iran is currently experiencing its most turbulent spell of political instability since Khomeini's triumphant return from exile in Paris. And, just as happened in 1979, the governing regime is deeply concerned about the outcome.

Certainly the regime is rattled by the Green movement's resilience, and the mounting confidence demonstrated by the protest movement in its attacks on government targets. Last weekend, Iranian dissidents briefly managed to post footage of a Revolutionary Guards' truck that was blown up in Marand, close to the border with Azerbaijan, as it was transporting tear gas, riot batons and shock grenades for use at Thursday's anticipated anti-government demonstrations. (Iran's ever-vigilant internet police have since blocked the link.)

There are also suggestions that the regime is resorting to increasingly desperate tactics to silence its critics, including staging the assassinations of prominent figures in an attempt to incriminate the West on charges of foul play. The murder last month of Massoud Ali-Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian nuclear scientist, who was killed by a car bomb as he left his house for work, was originally seized on by the government as evidence of Western attempts to destabilise the country. Iran's foreign ministry claimed it had uncovered "signs of evil by the Zionist regime, America and their mercenaries".

But four weeks later a very different picture is starting to emerge, with opposition activists claiming that the government was responsible for the death of Dr Ali-Mohammadi, who was a prominent supporter of the reform movement and may have been about to defect to the West and reveal embarrassing details about Iran's clandestine nuclear project.

Nothing is more guaranteed to rally support for Iran's beleaguered government than the suggestion that foreign powers are trying to deny the country the right to develop nuclear technology, and by blaming the West for the scientist's murder the regime would have hoped to arouse the country's deep-rooted nationalist instincts, while at the same time disposing of a high profile opponent.

Mr Ahmadinejad is certainly not reticent about playing the nuclear card to counter opposition complaints about his government. On various occasions since he first became president in 2005 he has made threatening noises about Iran's nuclear ambitions to bring his domestic critics into line, and the regime's most recent announcements regarding uranium enrichment should be seen in this context.

The fact that Iran has neither the technical expertise nor the financial resources to expand its enrichment programme to the level outlined by its scientists at the weekend is of little concern to Mr Ahmadinejad. By making the issue the centrepiece of his agenda to celebrate the Islamic revolution's anniversary, the Iranian president is calculating that national support for the country's nuclear programme will outstrip that for the protest movement.

All of which makes Iran's recent nuclear posturing something of a challenge for Western policymakers. If Iran is serious about raising its uranium enrichment capability to a higher level, that will be further evidence that it has no intention of negotiating a peaceful resolution of its nuclear programme with the West. But if the West overplays its hand by implementing crippling sanctions against Iran in response, then it might rally support in the country behind Mr Ahmadinejad's regime, thereby denying the pro-reform movement the opportunity to challenge the legitimacy of the hardline conservatives.

For the moment, the best policy the West could adopt would be to refrain from any decisive course of action until the outcome of the current political turmoil becomes clearer. For all Mr Ahmadinejad's bluster, Iran today is facing the most critical moment since the 1979 revolution, and it will be the Iranian people, not the West, who will ultimately decide the country's fate.

Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday that Iran is set to deliver a "punch" that will stun world powers during this week's 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution, AFP reported."The Iranian nation, with its unity and God's grace, will punch the arrogance (Western powers) on the 22nd of Bahman, February 11, in a way that will leave them stunned," Khamenei, who is also Iran's commander-in-chief, told a gathering of air force personnel according to AFP. (...) MEANWHILE - Yemeni Shia pro-Iran terrorists, perhaps assisted by Al Qaeda forces in Yemen, would attack (infiltrating overland) major Saudi Arabian oil installations, refineries and destroy as much of these as possible, thus harming Western economies and interests. Thus the Sunni Arabs, who consider Shia Moslems as infidels, would be punished and crippled. Meanwhile Islamic Iran retaliation - for ensuing reaction by the West - might take the following forms and escalate: a) An immediate barrage of thousands of prepositioned short range rockets at Saudi and Persian Gulf States, specially oil and financial installations of buildings. b) A similar barrage on Israel from Lebanon, Syria and by Palestinian Hamasin Gaza and the 5,000 Palestinian Special Forces Obama has been training in Jordan with American Generals in charge. c) Rockets fired at USA and Coalition troops in Iraq from within Iran. d) Bomb attacks on US businesses around the world such as Starbucks, hamburger chains etc., and U.S. bank branches and where they can our Embassies and Consulates. MOST DEMORALIZING.... Attacks within THE USA: Some estimated 40,000 Islamist suicide bombers have been gathered in the USA over the past 15-years, newly trained ones have been entering under a variety of visas in a steady flow during the last few years and are waiting instructions to deploy. Targets will include as many soft targets as can be reached with the most terrifying results. Shopping malls, IED explosives on our freeways hitting random targets but specifically tanker trucks. Major and minor airport terminals will become dangerous to visit as suiciders kill air passengers as well as at major train and bus terminals. Senate Passes AIPAC's Iran Sanctions Bill in Five Minutes (February 7, 2010)
(...) More often than Presidents, powerful interest groups can light a fire under the self-proclaimed "world's most deliberative body."For instance, just last week the Senate passed comprehensive sanctions on Iran -- a bill being pushed by AIPAC neocons and the other "usual suspects" -- in record time. It was brought up with only three senators on the floor; there was a five minute debate and it passed by voice vote. Just like that. (...) The Congressional sanctions bills target Iran's imports of refined petroleum (gasoline and other refined products) which Iranians use to power their cars and heat their homes. Iran, for all its raw petroleum, has very little refining capacity so it depends on imports. Under the provisions of the Congressional bills, no refined products could legally get into Iran, leaving its economy crippled (that, at least, is the hope of its sponsors),Congress appears indifferent to the impact this would have ordinary Iranian people.Imagine if a foreign country could block gasoline sales to the United States. Who would suffer? Actually, we know the answer from experience. As gas prices here have dramatically risen over the past decade or so, it has been the average income or lower income Americans who have been hurt most. The wealthy can afford to pay and so can the powerful. It's the "working stiff" who can't make ends meet. For the rich and powerful, four, five or even ten dollar a gallon gas would have no impact. It's no different in Iran. (...) These bills punish the revolutionaries -- along with every other Iranian -- and make their mission more difficult.Historically, countries rally behind even the most loathsome governments when faced by outside threat. Even the utter destruction of Dresden and other German cities by the allies did not reduce Hitler's hold on the people. Quite the contrary. Fortunately, Ahmadinejad and Khameini's hold on the Iranian people is already weak. Every action America and our allies take should be designed with the goal of making it even weaker. Instead, we come up with a strategy that does not distinguish between the loathsome regime and the people who are suffering under it and thereby undercuts the opposition. Smart sanctions would help bring down the Iranian regime or, at the very least, make it more open to negotiations over its nuclear plans. To be "smart," however, they must target the regime and not the Iranian people. The House and Senate passed sanctions are not only dumb, they are the very kind of sanctions Ahmadinejad would devise if it was up to him. CLIP

U.S. unveils offer to help Iran purchase medical isotopes (February 10, 2010)
The United States and other nations seeking to restrain Iran's nuclear ambitions are offering to help the Islamic republic purchase medical isotopes on the international market, administration officials said Tuesday. The offer, officials said, is meant to persuade Iran to halt its controversial push to produce fuel for a medical research reactor. U.S. officials say Tehran's enrichment plan -- it announced this week that it is producing higher-grade enriched uranium than ever before -- is evidence that it is pursuing fuel for a bomb. The previously undisclosed proposal came as President Obama told reporters that his administration is "developing a significant regime of sanctions" to impose on Iran. He said that action at the U.N. Security Council, which is currently stymied by China's objections to a fourth round of sanctions on Iran, "will be one aspect of that broader effort."U.N. sanctions do not prohibit Iran from obtaining the medical isotopes on the open market, which is how many nations -- including the United States -- get them for medical purposes. "Rather than operate a reactor, this would be a more cost-effective and efficient approach," one U.S. official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. There are a handful of key producers around the world, including Russia. Obama, during a news conference at the White House, said Iran appeared to have spurned his offers of engagement, including a potential deal to convert some of Iran's low-enriched uranium into the fuel necessary to keep an aged research reactor producing medical isotopes for an estimated 850,000 patients. The "Other Reason" Why the U.S. is Not Regulating Wall Street Financial Giants Overshadow Governments

By Washington's Blog - 2010-02-06

Sure, American politicians have been bought and paid for by the Wall Street giants. See this, this and this.

And everyone knows that the White House and Congress - while talking about cracking down on Wall Street with strict regulation - have actually watered down some of the most important protections that were in place.

For example, Senator Cantwell says that the new derivatives legislation is weaker than the old regulation. And leading credit default swap expert Satyajit Das says that the new credit default swap regulations not only won't help stabilize the economy, they might actually help to destabilize it.

But the U.S. is not being sold out in a vacuum.

On March 1, 1999, countries accounting for more than 90 per cent of the global financial services market signed onto the World Trade Organization's Financial Services Agreement (FSA). By signing the FSA, they committed to deregulate their financial markets.

For example, by signing the FSA, the U.S. agreed not to break up too big to fails. The U.S. also promised to repeal Glass-Steagall, and did so 8 months after signing the FSA.

Indeed, in signing the FSA and other WTO agreements, the U.S. has legally bound itself as follows:

- No new regulation: The United States agreed to a 'standstill provision' that requires that we not create new regulations (or reverse liberalization) for the list of financial services bound to comply with WTO rules. Given that the United States has made broad WTO financial services commitments — and thus is forbidden by this provision from imposing new regulations in these many areas — this provision seriously limits the policy [options] available to address the current crisis.

- Removal of regulation: The United States even agreed to try to even eliminate domestic financial service regulatory policies that meet GATS [i.e. General Agreement on Trade in Services] rules, but that may still adversely affect the ability of financial service suppliers of any other (WTO) Member to operate, compete, or enter the market.

- No bans on new financial service 'products': The United States is also bound to ensure that foreign financial service suppliers are permitted 'to offer in its territory any new financial service,' a direct conflict with the various proposals to limit various risky investment instruments, such as certain types of derivatives.

- Certain forms of regulation banned outright: The United States agreed that it would not set limits on the size, corporate form or other characteristics of foreign firms in the broad array of financial services it signed up to WTO strictures ...

- Treating foreign and domestic firms alike is not sufficient: The GATS market-access limits on U.S. domestic regulation apply in absolute terms; that is to say, even if a policy applies to domestic and foreign firms alike, if it goes beyond what WTO rules permit, it is forbidden. And, forms of regulation not outright banned by the market-access requirements must not inadvertently modify the conditions of competition in favor of services or service suppliers of the United States, even if they apply identically to foreign and domestic firms.

In other words, the problem isn't just that Congress and the White House have sold out to the Wall Street giants.

The problem is also that the U.S. has signed WTO agreements that have given the keys to the too big to fail, and have neutered their regulators. Even if some politicians tried to stand up to Wall Street - or even if we "through out all of the bums" currently in political roles - the U.S. would still be locked into the WTO's scheme for helping the financial giants to grow ever bigger and to take ever-bigger and ever-riskier gambles.

Indeed, the financial giants are pushing hard for further deregulation, demanding that the WTO's "Doha round" of agreements be signed.

On the other hand, if the American people stood up for our sovereignty and demanded that the financial giants be reined in, it would be easy to fix the WTO agreements which the U.S. has already signed. Public Citizen notes, "as a legal matter, these problems are easy to remedy ..."

Will the American people stand up and demand that the WTO deregulatory scheme be rolled back?

Or will we continue to let the financial giants destroy our country through buying and selling politicians (with the help of the Supreme Court) and forcing us into more and more draconian WTO treaties which destroy our sovereignty altogether?

Many people assume that they just have to hang in there until things improve. But the powers-that-be are grabbing more and more power and - unless we stand up to them - they will take it all.

As highly-regarded economist Michael Hudson, Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, who has advised the U.S., Canadian, Mexican and Latvian governments as well as the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, and who is a former Wall Street economist at Chase Manhattan Bank who helped establish the world's first sovereign debt fund) said:

"You have to realize that what they're trying to do is to roll back the Enlightenment, roll back the moral philosophy and social values of classical political economy and its culmination in Progressive Era legislation, as well as the New Deal institutions. They're not trying to make the economy more equal, and they're not trying to share power. Their greed is (as Aristotle noted) infinite. So what you find to be a violation of traditional values is a re-assertion of pre-industrial, feudal values. The economy is being set back on the road to debt peonage. The Road to Serfdom is not government sponsorship of economic progress and rising living standards, it's the dismantling of government, the dissolution of regulatory agencies, to create a new feudal-type elite."

And Foreign Policy magazine ran an article entitled "The Next Big Thing: Neomedievalism", arguing that the power of nations is declining, and being replaced by corporations, wealthy individuals, the sovereign wealth funds of monarchs, and city-regions.

We either stand up, or we slip back into a darker age.

NOTE from Jean: The following is a letter I've sent last February 7, 2010 to a number of MPs in Ottawa in support of the current efforts by the Collectif SEMO - - headed by François Therrien in Québec to stand behind a proposition by the Bloc Québécois in Ottawa to create a sub-committee tasked to study the excessive exposure of the population to cell phone microwave radiations and hopefully propose some new regulatory solution to this widespread problem.

Taking a Firm Stand Against Excessive Microwave Exposure

To whom it may concern:

I wish to express my full support to the current efforts by François Therrien (see his letter at the end), electric engineer and founder of S.E.M.O., to bring this issue of excessive human exposure to microwave emissions to the attention of our MPs in Ottawa, who now have the key responsibility to seize this opportunity to bring to the full light of the day, before the Health Committee, what is perhaps one of the most critically unaddressed health issues of our time.

For far too long now Canada has been badly lagging in tackling the ever increasing levels of electromagnetic pollution - also called electrosmog - of which the microwave fields generated by cell phone communications are a main component. The current safety limits, that have been established when the cell phone industry was still in its infancy, address merely the thermal effects of microwaves while completely ignoring their non-thermal effects for which a growing body of evidence now clearly demonstrates that there is great cause for concern. Even if the fundamental mechanisms of the interaction between biological material and electromagnetic fields at non-thermal levels are not yet fully understood, the empirical evidence at hand suggest that an increasingly large segment of the general population is submitted to dangerous levels of electromagnetic exposure, particularly in urban environments where the proximity of clusters of base station antennas translates into extremely high levels of radiation to which unsuspecting people are subjected 24/7 - without their informed consent...

These concerns have induced a large body of research (both epidemiological and experimental, in non-human animals as well as in humans). Concerns about effects on health have also been raised regarding other digital wireless systems, such as data communication networks and Wi-Fi, not to mention the new wireless internet technology called WiMAX (also called "Wi-Fi on steroids") which has recently been deployed across Canada. Just to give you an idea of the kind of exposure this added layer of electromagnetic radiations actually means for Canadians whose level of continuous exposure to these emissions was already millions of times above the natural background level prior to their deployment, here is a quote from an article that should be mandatory reading for any legislator considering the need for a review of the current safety limits...

The Radiation Poisoning Of America (October 9, 2007)
(...) WiMAX is WiFi on steroids. Upon startup of WiMAX transmitters near the Swedish village of Gotene, the emergency room at the local hospital was flooded by calls from people overcome with pulmonary and cardiovascular symptoms. WiMAX radiation could one day be cranked up to a bone-incinerating 66 gigahertz. A single WiMAX tower could provide internet coverage for an area of 3,000 square miles, although coverage for 6-25 square miles is the norm now. Promoters say WiMAX may some day replace all cable and DSL broadband services and irradiate virtually all rural areas. Yet, not a single environmental or public health study has been required as the industry unleashes infrastructure for this new wireless technology from which no living flesh will escape. CLIP

Here is another excerpt from this article that is also very relevant:

"Even if there were reliable compliance monitoring, many experts say that FCC public exposure guidelines for RF/microwave radiation are deadly because they are based on the obsolete and unfounded theory that only power density hot enough to flash-cook tissues is harmful. This puts FCC at odds with current scientific knowledge regarding the minimum exposure level at which harm to living cells begins. Myriad symptoms of radiation poisoning can be induced at exposure levels hundreds, even thousands of times lower than current standards permit. Russia's public exposure standards are 100 times more stringent than ours because Russian scientists have consistently shown that, at U.S. exposure levels, humans develop pathological changes in heart, kidney, liver and brain tissues, plus cancers of all types. Norbert Hankin, chief of the EPA's Radiation Protection Division, has stated that the FCC's exposure guidelines are protective only against effects arising from a thermal (flash burn) mechanism. He concedes that, "the generalization by many, that these guidelines protect human beings from harm by any and all mechanisms, is not justified." Thus, public microwave exposure levels tolerated by the FCC and its industry-loaded advisory committees are a national health disaster. Yet, for pragmatic and lucrative reasons, federal exposure limits have been deliberately set so high that no matter how much additional wireless radiation is added to the national burden, it will always be "within standards."

And here is one last excerpt - from the same article - that clearly depicts what is at stake:

"America must soon face its radiation cataclysm. The EMR Network says that millions of workers occupy work sites on a daily basis where operating antenna arrays are camouflaged and where no RF safety program is carried out. Thanks to shameless predatory advertising techniques, American youth are now literally addicted to "texting," watching TV and accessing the Internet on tiny wireless screens. These are the toys that keep cell towers and WiFi hot spots buzzing. A nation that requires compulsory mass irradiation to fuel its trivial entertainment needs is surely destined to have a sickly and short-lived population. Right now, 11.7 million Americans have been diagnosed with cancer. Because humans can harbor cancer conditions for years before detection, additional millions of cancer victims are yet undiagnosed. The Journal of Oncology Practice predicts that, by 2020, there will be so many cancer cases in the U.S. that doctors may not be able to cope with their caseloads. The report concludes the nation could soon face a shortage of up to 4,000 cancer specialists. A recent CBS news series on the raging American cancer epidemic left viewers with the mindset that trainloads of federal cash must flow if we are to find the cancer answer. But a proven cancer initiator now inundates our cities, roadways, schools, offices and homes. Any environmental stressor that "jackhammers" human cells at millions to billions of cycles per second is a cancer factor. Any wave-pollution that breaks the DNA and causes pre-cancerous micronuclei in human blood is a cancer factor. Logic tells us that there will be no "answer to cancer" until we eliminate the cancer factors. Wireless communications radiation is to America today what DDT, thalidomide, dioxin, benzene, Agent Orange and asbestos were yesterday. Historically, the truth about the public health menace of extreme toxins is never told until thousands sicken and die."

I could go on for hours and quote countless articles and many peer-reviewed scientific studies (like the recently published - and inherently flawed - Interphone Study which has languished for years in bureaucratic limbo before its results were finally released) to further substantiate why governmental action to institute much more stringent safety limits and other health measures related to this issue are urgently needed. [Some recommended readings and resources are provided below for your review.]

To me, the real issue that must be addressed here is not whether the current electromagnetic radiation levels to which the public is exposed are harmful. They clearly are from an epidemiological/empirical standpoint with the growing epidemic of electromagnetic hypersensitivity and the rising number of brain cancers in long-term cell phones users, which represents merely the tip of the iceberg of the time bomb effect from the widespread cell phone use we see nowadays. From a common sense standpoint, and based on the precautionary principle, something should have been done a long time ago to mitigate those risks and protect the population now playing the unwitting role of guinea pigs in a mass experiment that can but end very badly. (As of June 2009, there were more than 4.3 billion users worldwide[1])

No! The real question to me is why have strict regulatory measures not been enacted yet when the telecommunication industry can definitely implement new technical standards, as it has been done in several Eastern European countries, to significantly lower the total amount of electromagnetic radiations to which the public is exposed, without impairing wireless communications and with only marginal effects on the long-term profitability of the cell phone industry?

The answer would appear to be stealth lobbying by a multi-billion dollar industry that has grown greedily indifferent to the health of the end users of its products and complacent regulatory agencies that seem more concerned with the financial health of this rogue industry than with the health of the millions of human beings supposedly under their regulatory and monitoring protection.

This is a vicious circle of inaction and complacency that must be urgently broken.

Basic human decency and sound ethics should and must prevail!

Here is a key excerpt from this excellent above-mentioned document about something which should be put at the very top of this Health Committee's priority list for it (hoped for) safety limits review and recommendations:

"The French government has become the first European government to publicly announce a proposal for an outright ban on some aspects of mobile phone usage based exclusively on potential risks to health. The proposed bill could lead to a ban on advertising of mobile phones to children under 12. It will also be illegal for sales of phones that are intended for use by children under the age of 6, and it will be compulsory for all handsets to be sold with accompanying earphones. While similar to the recommendation of other countries, this is the first recommendation to have made its way into proposed national legislation. France is also requiring manufacturers to come up with a new kind of phone for children—it would only allow sending and receiving of text messages and thus does not allow children to place the cellphone to the side of their heads. Toronto’s Department of Public Health has advised that children under eight should only use mobile phones in emergencies and teenagers should limit calls to less than 10 minutes, and Israel’s Health Ministry has also advised caution. In January 2009, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) also issued a position paper stating, “With children, we have reason to be especially careful,” and recommended children’s mobile phone use should be restricted to text messages, parental limitation of the number and duration of calls, use of hands-free devices, avoidance of calls from a moving car or train, and calls from rural areas (where the cellphone radiates more power in order to connect to a distant cellphone base station. The research, which has taken 10 years and cost £20million, found that heavy mobile users suffered up to 50 per cent more tumours. News of the findings, which are to be published within the next eight weeks, has led to calls for mobiles to carry health warnings. Alasdair Philips, of campaign group Powerwatch, said: "Mobile companies hide the figures on how much radiation they give off in the back of manuals."But modern phones give out 217 electromagnetic pulses every minute into your head. Primary school children should not have them, secondary school children should be encouraged to text rather than call, and males should not keep them in a pocket because they drastically affect fertility."The research has been done by the Interphone project, funded by the World Health Organisation and mobile phone companies.Previous studies have been inconclusive, but Interphone draws together the most recent research from 13 countries and involved interviewing 12,800 people. Science has shown increased risk of brain tumors from use of cellphones, as well as increased risk of eye cancer, salivary gland tumors, testicular cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and leukemia. The public must be informed.”

“In a world where a drug cannot be launched without proof that it is safe, where the use of herbs and natural compounds available to all since early Egyptian times are now questioned, their safety subjected to the deepest scrutiny, where a new food cannot be launched without prior approval, the idea that we can use mobile telephony, including masts, and introduce WiFi and mobile phones without restrictions around our 5 year olds is double-standards gone mad. I speak, not just as an editor and scientist that has looked in depth at all the research, but as a father that lost his beloved daughter to a brain tumour.”

“The precautionary principle applies where scientific evidence is insufficient, inconclusive or uncertain and preliminary scientific evaluation indicates that there are reasonable grounds for concern that the potentially dangerous effects on the environment, human, animal or plant health may be inconsistent with the high level of protection chosen.”

Cell Phones are Dangerous, But This May Be Far Worse...

An increasingly alarmed army of international scientists have reached a controversial conclusion:

The "electrosmog" that first began developing with the rollout of the electrical grid a century ago and now envelops every inhabitant of Earth is responsible for many of the diseases that impair or kill them.

During the past 100 years, we have methodically filled in the electromagnetic spectrum far beyond what occurs in nature.

Recently, several developments have highlighted the growing hazards of EMF pollution and the crucial need to address them.

In 2007, the Bioinitiative Working Group released a 650-page report citing more than 2,000 studies (many very recent) that detail the toxic effects of EMFs from all sources. Chronic exposure to even low-level radiation (like that from cell phones), can cause a variety of cancers, impair immunity, and contribute to Alzheimer's disease and dementia, heart disease, and many other ailments.

Additionally, every single study of brain tumors that looks at 10 or more years of use shows an increased risk of brain cancer.

A recent study from Sweden is particularly frightening, suggesting that if you started using a cell phone as a teen, you have a 5 times greater risk of brain cancer than those who started as an adult.

A recent study showed that exposure to very-low-frequency voltage signals (1-100kHz), or "dirty electricity,” can greatly increase your risk of melanoma, thyroid cancer, and uterine cancer. These signals are largely by-products of electronics, such as modern energy-efficient appliances, televisions, stereos and other entertainment devices.

These electronic devices use a lower voltage than other appliances, and this manipulation of current creates a complex electromagnetic field. This field not only radiates into the immediate environment but also can travel along home or office wiring throughout the neighborhood.

"For the first time in our evolutionary history, we have generated an entire secondary, virtual, densely complex environment — an electromagnetic soup — that essentially overlaps the human nervous system," says Michael Persinger, PhD, a neuroscientist at Laurentian University who has studied the effects of EMFs on cancer cells.

And it appears that, more than a century after Thomas Edison switched on his first light bulb, the health consequences of that continual overlap are just now beginning to be documented.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

New scientific evidence is continually emerging that nearly all the twentieth century human plagues can be tied to some aspect of our use of electricity, including:

- Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children
- Brain tumors
- Malignant melanoma
- Asthma
- Cardiovascular disease
- Immune system dysfunction
- Hormone disturbance
- Brittle diabetes
- Sleep disorders, headaches, Alzheimer’s disease and ADHD

And this is just a partial list.

EMFs and Your DNA

Cells in your body can react to EMFs as a harmful invader, just like they do to other environmental toxins.

Remember that you are an electrical being.

Your body is a complex communication device where cells “talk”, tissues “talk,” organs “talk,” and organisms “talk[1].” At each of these levels, the communication includes finely tuned bio-electrical transmitters and receivers, which are tuned like tuning into a radio station. What happens when you expose a radio antenna to a significant amount of external noise? You get static from the noise – and that is what is happening to your body in today’s electrosmog environment.

Two of the more well-known biologicals impacts from electrosmog are the interruption of the brain wave pattern[2] leading to behavior issues[3] and the interference to your body’s entire communication system (cytoskeleton)[4] leading to abnormal neurological function, such as dementia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia.

At a cellular level, your cell membrane receptors (the brain of the cell) recognize electromagnetic fields at very low levels of exposure producing a stress response similar to that produced by exposure to heavy metals or toxic chemicals.[5]

This can cause the cell membrane to go from an “active” or permeable state where it allows nutrients in and toxins out, to an “inactive” state where the cell membrane is impermeable. During a normal day, your cells will change states thousands of time, but when under constant environmental stress, the membranes can be locked in the inactive state. This is often referred to as “oxidative stress” as nutrients are able to enter into the cell, while toxins (free radicals) are not allowed to leave.

There is also real evidence that this inactive state can even have geno-toxic effects, meaning electrosmog is toxic by both damaging DNA and preventing your body from repairing DNA, which can be the first step to cancer.

We are not really sure what the “trigger” is that causes health problems, but we know that the electrosmog is definitely a contributing factor. For health, your body must be able to communicate within itself, that is, to be in harmony with the natural rhythm of the earth and all life.

The chaotic and unpredictable patterns from electrosmog can create noise in your body and force your body out of harmony. These damaging biological effects have been found at levels far below the so-called industrial and governmental safety limits—1,000,000 times lower than those limits, in some cases.

Why do things such as MTT, acupuncture, TENS units, pacemakers, and many other bioelectrical treatments work? Most likely a major reason why they work is because they focus on getting your body back into its natural rhythm or resonance. Just as you breathe in oxygen from an atmosphere you can’t see, your cells are suspended in a sea of vibrational energy that you can’t see or feel—that is, until it makes you sick.

As the MSNBC article states:

“Remember, these positive-negative shifts are occurring many thousands of times per second, so the electrons in your body are oscillating to that tune. Your body becomes charged up because you're basically coupled to the transient's electric field."

Keep in mind that all the cells in your body, whether islets in the pancreas awaiting a signal to manufacture insulin or white blood cells speeding to the site of an injury, use electricity—or "electron change”— to communicate with each other.

By overlapping the body's signaling mechanisms, could transients [electrosmog] interfere with the secretion of insulin, drown out the call-and-response of the immune system, and cause other physical havoc?”

Yes, absolutely.

And the really frightening aspect about electrosmog is how little control you have over it.

How You Can Protect Yourself

Fortunately, you are not completely helpless. There are strategies that can help reduce your exposure and protect you from the constant onslaught of radiation.

For over 20 years, Building Biologists ( have been studying and educating the general public regarding the negative impact of electromagnetic fields (EMF). On their website are multiple videos and information on the why, what and how for dealing with EMFs.

First and foremost, you’ll want to reduce your exposure to as many sources as you can.

For my latest list of safety tips and guidelines on how to reduce your exposure, please see my previous article.

In addition to these recommendations, Camilla Rees mentions a few more in her video, including:

1. Intestinal care: Make sure you’re getting plenty of healthy probiotics. The Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland discovered that symptoms of electrosensitivity can be reduced by providing gut barrier support. For more information, listen to the interview with Dr. Rau, medical director of the Paracelsus Clinic, available at this link.

2. Regular detoxification programs: Not only are you dealing with increasing amounts of toxic chemicals in your environment, your body is full of microorganisms that respond to EMFs by generating increased levels of their own toxins, according to a course for physicians on this subject, taught by Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD.

3. Beware of mold: Mold, just like other microorganisms, can also react in high EMF environments. One study showed 600 times more neurotoxins generated from mold in a high EMF environment. According to Rees, there are also mold legal cases being reviewed, questioning whether problems in buildings infested with mold may have actually been related to nearby antenna infrastructure.

Controlling the environment in which you sleep is especially important, given you spend a third of your life there. Review how to create a sleep sanctuary in five easy steps.

More Electrical Pollution Solutions

Electrical Pollution Solution has an extensive list of steps you can take to combat electrosmog in your home and work environments. Their suggestions include the following:

- Remove your microwave oven. Besides dangerous EMF radiation, microwave ovens have other negatives impacts on your health.

- Have your electrician make sure the wire between the meter and your electrical box is large enough and in good condition.

- Have the phone company install a Radio Frequency (RF) Filter on your phone line; some people also install shielded phone wire.

- Avoid using electric blankets and electric heating pads.

- Use rubber gloves when washing dishes or working at the sink, and stand on a non-conductive mat. Both increase the resistance of the path through your body.

- Put aluminum flashing on your desktop computer, and connect that to aluminum flashing under your chair with another strip of aluminum flashing.

For additional EMF information, please see for the latest news and updates.

Be a Live Wire for Change

The last thing that you can do, and perhaps the most important, is to help spread awareness about this ever-increasing problem.

If you believe that one or more transmitting products is making you ill, please report it/them to the following agencies (be prepared with the manufacturer, model and/or serial number, and a list of your symptoms):

1.FDA 1-800-FDA-1088 The same FDA program that regulates medical devices also regulates consumer products that emit radiation.

2.Consumer Product Safety Commission 1-800-638-2772

3.EMR Policy Institute

It’s unfortunate, but the government is not likely to step up and do the right thing to protect your health without a lot of pressure from the public.

Power companies have successfully beaten back attempts to modify exposure standards. The cell phone industry, which has funded at least 87% of the research on the subject, has effectively resisted regulation.

Please get involved at any level you can, to help increase the pressure on industry and industry regulators, which is the only way to create a safer future for everyone.

From: Kelley Elkins (
Subject: Worst "first" date story

This is from a woman interviewed on the Jay Leno Show. He asked the audience to share their worst "first" date stories." This woman won.... hands down.

She said it was midwinter...Snowing and quite cold... and the guy had taken her skiing in the mountains outside Salt Lake City , Utah.

It was a day trip (no overnight). They were strangers, after all, and had never met before. The outing was fun but relatively uneventful until they were headed home late that afternoon.

They were driving back down the mountain, when she gradually began to realize that she should not have had that extra latte. They were about an hour away from anywhere with a rest room and in the middle of nowhere! Her companion suggested she try to hold it, which she did for a while. Unfortunately, because of the heavy snow and slow going, there came a point here she told him that he had better stop and let her go beside the road, or it would be the front seat of his car.

They stopped and she quickly crawled out beside the car, yanked her pants down and started. In the deep snow she didn't have good footing, so she let her butt rest against the rear fender to steady herself.

Her companion stood on the side of the car watching for traffic and indeed was a real gentleman and refrained from peeking. All she could think about was the relief she felt despite the rather embarrassing nature of the situation.

Upon finishing however, she soon became aware of another sensation. As she bent to pull up her pants, the young lady discovered her butt was firmly glued against the car's fender.

Thoughts of tongues frozen to poles immediately came to mind as she attempted to disengage her flesh from the icy metal. It was quickly apparent that she had a brand new problem, due to the extreme cold.

Horrified by her plight and yet aware of the humor of the moment, she answered her date's concerns about' what is taking so long' with a reply that indeed, she was 'freezing her butt off' and in need of some assistance! He came around the car as she tried to cover herself with her sweater and then, as she looked imploringly into his eyes, he burst out laughing. She too, got the giggles and when they finally managed to compose themselves, they assessed her dilemma.

Obviously, as hysterical as the situation was, they also were faced with a real problem.

Both agreed it would take something hot to free her chilly cheeks from the grip of the icy metal! Thinking about what had gotten her into the predicament in the first place, both quickly realized that there was only one way to get her free. So, as she looked the other way, her first time date proceeded to unzip his pants and pee her butt off the fender.

As the audience screamed in laughter, she took the Tonight Show prize hands down. Or perhaps that should be 'pants down. 'And you thought your first date was embarrassing.

Jay Leno's comment...'This gives a whole new meaning to being pissed off..'

Oh and how did the first date turn out? He became her husband and was sitting next to her on the Leno show.
