9/11 First Responders Plagued by Health Problems From Toxic Dust and Debris (Sept. 1, 2011)

For many of the nearly 50,000 9/11 first responders, the wounds of the Twin Tower attacks are far from healing. According to two studies published Thursday in the British journal Lancet, these rescue workers continue to struggle with respiratory illness, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and many of them may be at increased risk for developing a number of cancers.In the months following 9/11, firefighter Kenny Specht, 43, spent every day at the site, navigating the rubble in hopes of at first rescuing people, and later recovering the bodies of those crushed when the towers fell. Though he and his fellow rescue workers were picking through rubble littered with asbestos, mercury, crushed florescent light bulbs and other known toxins, they were outfitted with only their normal uniform to protect them from potential contaminants. "They gave us paper masks and overalls, like you'd see in home improvement shows. They let us go back to our homes every day with our contaminated gear," Specht says. It wasn't until 2006 that he started to experience health problems. At first it was gastrointestinal issues that required him to have his gallbladder removed, but in 2007 a CAT scan following an injury on the job revealed thyroid cancer.

According to a study released of nearly 10,000 New York firefighters (half of whom worked at the WTC site), those from the site are 32 percent more likely to have cancer."I've been to 54 funerals of firefighters since 9/11 and 52 of them are cancer-related," says John Feal, a former firefighter and founder of the FealGood Foundation, an advocacy group seeking medical coverage and compensation for first responders of 9/11. A study found that firefighters who worked at Ground Zero on 9/11 are 19 percent more likely to have cancer than other firefighters who did not work at the site. This study represents the first substantial conclusion that links working at the World Trade Center site with increased risk of cancer. New York firefighters, police officers and construction workers, who worked at the site, have argued that there is overwhelming anecdotal evidence that work at Ground Zero caused cancer, but researchers have been hesitate to draw conclusions because it could take up to 20 to 40 years to prove this potential link. Chronic condition represents a 'breakdown in the body's defense against toxic substances' -- NEW YORK - At first, Mike Greene thought it might just be a bad allergy. But when his sense of smell didn't come back for months, the paramedic suspected it was caused by polluted air he'd breathed at the most harrowing job site of his career: the wreckage of the World Trade Center. Turns out he is not alone. A significant portion of those on duty at the twin towers suffered long-term damage to their sense of smell and their ability to detect harmful irritants through the nose, Philadelphia researchers reported in a new study last week. Far from being just an inconvenience, this chronic condition represents a breakdown in the body's defense against toxic substances, said lead author Pamela Dalton, an experimental psychologist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center. In a sample of 102 workers in construction, emergency services, and other fields, 22 percent had an impaired sense of smell more than two years after exposure at the twin towers site, and 74 percent had a reduced ability to detect irritants. That ability is separate from the sense of smell, and is illustrated by the burning sensation you get from say, the noxious fumes in a bottle of bleach.Initial dust cloud People caught in the initial dust cloud on Sept. 11, 2001, suffered the greatest degree of impairment, as indicated by their lack of response when taking brief sniffs of an irritant in a laboratory setting. "These people just didn't react because their ability to sense that irritation was just literally wiped out," Dalton says. That means in the future, they won't know to shield themselves from such irritants before they penetrate to the lungs, she says. An impaired sense of smell, meanwhile, makes it tough to detect hazards, such as spoiled food and smoke from a fire. Previous studies have documented respiratory problems in those who were exposed to the haze of pollutants in the days and weeks after the attacks, but the workers' ability to perceive odors and irritants is a new area of research. NEW YORK - Television viewers who want to immerse themselves in memories of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks as the 10th anniversary approaches will have a staggering number of choices. There will be dozens of specials covering the events from every conceivable angle. Many are from networks that either didn't exist back in 2001, didn't have the capacity to cover the tragedy live or weren't aggressively making as much original programming. Chances are that the 10th will end up being the biggest anniversary in terms of media attention: 9/11 is still relatively fresh in the minds of those who experienced it, yet time has also offered more perspective. "It was a transformative event," said Mark Burstein, executive producer of special events coverage for ABC News. "This was an event that everyone who was over the age of 10 remembers where they were on this day. It changed millions of lives. I'm not surprised that 10 years later the world will stop and look back and remember."In the days after the attacks, the president of ABC News, on the advice of a prominent child psychologist, ordered his news division to strictly curtail reruns of the more disturbing images: the second plane crashing into the World Trade Center; the collapse of the towers. Specifically, the paper positively identifies an advanced engineered pyrotechnic material in each of several samples of dust from the destroyed skyscrapers, in the form of tiny chips having red and gray sides and sharing a very specific three-dimensional structure, chemical composition, and ignition behavior. The basis and validity of this identification can be grasped quickly by anyone with a working knowledge of physics and chemistry. They need only read the paper's one-page conclusion, and perhaps its section describing the provenance of the dust samples. But what of the reader whose strong suit isn't the hard sciences? Does one have to be an expert to understand the findings and evaluate the many claims thrown up by "debunkers" to dismiss those findings? Fortunately, the answer is no. NIST's 3-Year $20,000,000 Cover-Up of the Crime of the Century -- On June 23, 2005 the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) published the draft of its 'Final Report of the National Construction Safety Team on the Collapses of the World Trade Center Towers' (document NISTNCSTAR1Draft.pdf), and in September it released its Final Report. This Report and a separate one on the case of WTC 7 represent the culmination of NIST's three-year investigation of the collapses of the three World Trade Center skyscrapers, funded with an initial budget of $16 million and subsequent appropriations from taxpayers' money.NIST's investigation is often cited as proving the official theory that the plane crashes and fires caused the collapses. Yet the Report does not explain why or how the buildings totally collapsed, despite the lack of a single historical precedent for a steel-framed skyscraper totally collapsing for any reason other than controlled demolition. And, in contrast to the Report's voluminous detail about the plane crashes, fires, and loss of life, it makes no attempt to characterize or explain the demolition-like features of the collapses -- such as their explosiveness, pulverization, verticality and nearly free-fall rapidity -- except for two sentences in a half-page section added to the Final Report to address criticisms of the Draft. NIST simply avoids these troublesome issues by placing them outside the scope of its investigation, claiming that "global collapse" was "inevitable" after the "initiation of collapse."

In his new book "Cognitive Infiltration - An Obama Appointee's Plan to Undermine the 9/11 Conspiracy Theory", Dr. David Ray Griffin writes about former Chicago and Harvard law professor Cass Sunstein, who in 2009 was appointed by President Barack Obama to direct an important executive branch office. In 2008 Sunstein co-authored an article entitled "Conspiracy Theories: Causes and Cures," containing a plan for the government to prevent the spread of anti-government "conspiracy theories." That's according to the left-leaning Rideau Institute, an Ottawa advocacy group that released a report on the subject Wednesday afternoon, days before the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The Rideau Institute said since Sept. 11, 2001, Canada has devoted an additional $92-billion, or $69-billion when adjusted for inflation, to security expenditures over what it would be spending had budgets grown in line with pre-9/11 levels.Today, Ottawa spends $13-billion more, adjusted for inflation, than it would otherwise have spent, the institute days.By comparison, Ottawa spends about $250-billion a year today including programs, transfers to provinces and interest on the debt."This has created a new 'national security establishment', which includes the departments of National Defence, Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Public Safety, Justice, and related organizations such as the RCMP, CSIS, and the CBSA," the Rideau Institute says.Even accounting for inflation, military spending in Canada is up nearly 50 per cent today, at more than $21-billion per year.
