U.S. Advised Iraqi Ministry on Oil Deals (June 30, 2008)
A group of American advisers led by a small State Department team played an integral part in drawing up contracts between the Iraqi government and five major Western oil companies to develop some of the largest fields in Iraq, American officials say. The disclosure, coming on the eve of the contracts‚ announcement, is the first confirmation of direct involvement by the Bush administration in deals to open Iraq's oil to commercial development and is likely to stoke criticism. In their role as advisers to the Iraqi Oil Ministry, American government lawyers and private-sector consultants provided template contracts and detailed suggestions on drafting the contracts, advisers and a senior State Department official said. At a time of spiraling oil prices, the no-bid contracts, in a country with some of the world's largest untapped fields and potential for vast profits, are a rare prize to the industry. The contracts are expected to be awarded Monday to Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP, Total and Chevron, as well as to several smaller oil companies. The deals have been criticized by opponents of the Iraq war, who accuse the Bush administration of working behind the scenes to ensure Western access to Iraqi oil fields even as most other oil-exporting countries have been sharply limiting the roles of international oil companies in development. Though enriched by high prices, the companies are starved for new oil fields. American military officials say the pipelines [in Iraq] now have excess capacity, waiting for output to increase at the fields.

Journalist Charges Censorship by US Military in Fallujah - by Dahr Jamail (July 4, 2008)
SAN FRANCISCO - U.S. journalist Zoriah Miller says he was censored by the U.S. military in the Iraqi city of Fallujah after photographing Marines who died in a suicide bombing. On Jun. 26, a suicide bomber attacked a city council meeting in Fallujah, 69 kms west of Baghdad, between local tribal sheikhs and military officials.Three Marines, Cpl. Marcus Preudhomme, Capt. Philip Dykeman, and Lt. Col. Max Galeai, were assigned to 2d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The explosion also killed two interpreters and 20 Iraqis, including the mayor of the nearby town of Karmah, two prominent sheikhs and their sons, and another sheikh and his brother. All were members of the local “awakening council” one of the U.S.-backed militias that have taken up arms against al Qaeda in Iraq, according to U.S. and Iraqi authorities. Miller was embedded with Marines on a patrol one block from the attack when it occurred. He had originally turned down the option of going to report on the city council meeting that was bombed. Miller ran with the Marines he was with to the scene of the attack. “As I ran I saw human pieces…a skull cap with hair, bone shards,” he told IPS during a telephone interview from the so-called Green Zone in Baghdad. “When we arrived at the building it was chaotic. There were Iraqis, police and civilians running around screaming. Bodies were being pulled out of the building.” “I went in and there were over 20 people’s remains all over the place,” Miller continued, “Of the Marines I jogged in with, someone started to vomit. Others were standing around, not knowing what to do. It was completely surreal.” “At that moment I realised this was far beyond anything I’d experienced, and I realised I wanted to focus and make sure I could capture what it felt like, and the visual horror,” Miller explained. “I thought, ‘Nobody in the U.S. has any idea what it means when they hear that 20 people died in a suicide bombing.’ I want people to be able to associate those numbers with the scene and the actual loss of human life. And to show why soldiers are suffering from PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder],” Miller told IPS. Miller was taken out of the building by Marines, but then allowed back inside where he took one last photo of the carnage before they closed the scene to him. “We spent most of the rest of the day as Marines picked up body parts and put them in buckets and bags,” he said. Chinese central government officials meet with Dalai Lama's private representatives
BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with private representatives of the 14th Dalai Lama in Beijing recently, the department said on Thursday. (...) If the Dalai Lama makes positive moves, the next round of contact may be held before the end of this year, according to the officials of the department. The Dalai Lama's representatives also expressed their ideas on several relevant issues and said they would report the results to the Dalai Lama.

US Dollar on Edge, Gold on Verge (July 3, 2008)
The US Dollar is on the edge of the chasm again. The nonsense has been cast aside about a bank recovery, a housing stabilization, and an economy that can withstand a spillover. How incredible it is to see grown adults accept such marketing and promotional drivel. Wake up and smell the blood! The US financial and economic system has never been so vulnerable in almost a century. What we see now is far more dangerous than the 1970 decade, characterized by vast cost shocks. Back then, China was not a player. Its current presence puts a price ceiling on finished product pricing power, and even more importantly, on wages broadly in the labor market. Households cannot afford higher prices, as bankruptcy pain escalates. Other key differences are discussed in the upcoming July Hat Trick Letter. The US financial networks and media seem to describe the entire set of symptoms that constitute near systemic collapse, without ever mentioning the potential for collapse. My view is that the banks will lead the process.(...) Last week the US Federal Reserve blinked. This week they are hiding. They have no policy options left. They are backed into a corner. They can defend the US Dollar and further kill both housing and credit starved commerce, or they can bow to the stock market with further stimulus to the US Economy and invite additional grand increases to cost structures again. The US Fed has suffered some rather substantial damage to its private portfolios. This is unprecedented. They are not an altruistic organization, but rather the most parasitic exploitative financial organization ever to operate on US soil, outside organized crime. The German journal Der Spiegel wrote that the IMF had informed US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke of its plans for a general examination of the US financial system. The IMF board of directors has ruled that a so-called Financial Sector Assessment Program is to be carried out in the United States. This, according to the German journal, "is nothing less than an X-ray of the entire US financial system No Fed chief in US history has been forced to submit to the kind of humiliation that Ben Bernanke is facing." For some reason, the entire story escaped the intrepid lapdog US press network system. We would live in a different world if all financial network news was from public funded commentators. My view is that some sort of powerful steps are being taken to perhaps wrest control of the US banks away from Americans, after declaring them to be a high risk to the global financial system. CLIP

Ingrid Betancourt's homecoming soured by claims of secret payoff (July 5, 2008)
Ingrid Betancourt landed to an emotional welcome in France yesterday after six years of captivity in Colombia, praising President Sarkozy for saving her from likely death in the hands of the rebel army that held her.As the Colombian politician arrived in her "second home country", questions arose over the bloodless military operation that secured her freedom from the jungle, along with 14 other hostages.According to reports that were dismissed by Colombia as lies, the apparently brilliant operation was partly stage-managed and included a US-financed ransom. A senior French expert said on state television that some of Ms Betancourt's captors had "probably been bought". (...) Swiss public radio cited an informed Colombian source as saying that the operation had been staged to cover up the fact that the US and Colombians had paid $20 million for their freedom. The hostages released on Wednesday "were in reality ransomed for a high price, and the whole operation afterwards was a set-up", it said. Three of the hostages were agents of the US Drug Enforcement Agency, said to have been detached from the FBI.French state media also raised questions about Ms Betancourt's healthy appearance on her release, compared with the gaunt and haggard look of her last video from captivity. France Inter radio suggested that the hostages may have been given food and medicine before a planned release.A Colombian Foreign Ministry spokesman called the allegations "completely false . . . They are lies". The French Foreign Ministry said that it had not paid any ransom. Israeli media also reported that its intelligence service, Mossad, had helped to plan and execute the operation, naming Israel Ziv, a retired army officer.

Earth's Core, Magnetic Field Changing Fast, Study Says (June 30, 2008)
Rapid changes in the churning movement of Earth's liquid outer core are weakening the magnetic field in some regions of the planet's surface, a new study says."What is so surprising is that rapid, almost sudden, changes take place in the Earth's magnetic field," said study co-author Nils Olsen, a geophysicist at the Danish National Space Center in Copenhagen. The findings suggest similarly quick changes are simultaneously occurring in the liquid metal, 1,900 miles (3,000 kilometers) below the surface, he said. The swirling flow of molten iron and nickel around Earth's solid center triggers an electrical current, which generates the planet's magnetic field.(Learn more about Earth's interior.) The study, published recently in Nature Geoscience, modeled Earth's magnetic field using nine years of highly accurate satellite data.Flip-FlopFluctuations in the magnetic field have occurred in several far-flung regions of Earth, the researchers found. In 2003 scientists found pronounced changes in the magnetic field in the Australasian region. In 2004, however, the changes were focused on Southern Africa. The changes "may suggest the possibility of an upcoming reversal of the geomagnetic field," said study co-author Mioara Mandea, a scientist at the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam. Earth's magnetic field has reversed hundreds of times over the past billion years, and the process could take thousands of years to complete.The decline in the magnetic field also is opening Earth's upper atmosphere to intense charged particle radiation, scientists say.Satellite data show the geomagnetic field decreasing in the South Atlantic region, Mandea said, adding that an oval-shaped area east of Brazil is significantly weaker than similar latitudes in other parts of the world. "It is in this region that the shielding effect of the magnetic field is severely reduced, thus allowing high energy particles of the hard radiation belt to penetrate deep into the upper atmosphere to altitudes below a hundred kilometers (62 miles)," Mandea said. This radiation does not influence temperatures on Earth. The particles, however, do affect technical and radio equipment and can damage electronic equipment on satellites and airplanes, Olsen of the Danish space center said. CLIP

Earth begins to kill people for changing its climate (04.07.2008)
At least 2.5 million people have been killed in natural disasters over the recent 48 years. The number of casualties over the recent 20 years made up 1.6 million people, the UN said. Rob Vos, the director of the Development Policy and Analysis Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), said that the number of natural disasters taking place in the world nowadays has quadrupled in comparison with the 1970s. The disaster-related economic damage has increased at least seven times.The authors of the report delivered at the UN headquarters in New York at the session of the UN Economic and Social Council did not specify the reason why natural disasters started happening more frequently in the world today. They said, however, that the frequency of catastrophes could be linked with the global climate change. It was also said that the death toll in developing states exceeds the number of casualties in developed states 20-30 times. “The consequences of disasters become more and more destructive, whereas the countries are unable to overcome them effectively without the assistance from the international community. We believe it is necessary to set up a foundation to help the victims of natural disasters with the budget of 4 or 5 billion dollars,” Vos said.The official added that all existent humanitarian projects including those conducted under the UN aegis are mostly aimed at overcoming consequences rather than preventing them.

WASHINGTON - During the European heat wave of 2003 that killed tens of thousands, the temperature in parts of France hit 104 degrees. Nearly 15,000 people died in that country alone. During the Chicago heat wave of 1995, the mercury spiked at 106 and about 600 people died. In a few decades, people will look back at those heat waves "and we will laugh," said Andreas Sterl, author of a new study. "We will find (those temperatures) lovely and cool."Sterl's computer model shows that by the end of the century, high temperatures for once-in-a-generation heat waves will rise twice as fast as everyday average temperatures. Chicago, for example, would reach 115 degrees in such an event by 2100. Paris heat waves could near 109 with Lyon coming closer to 114. (...) And it's not just at the end of the century. By 2050, heat waves will be 3 to 5 degrees hotter than now "and probably be longer-lasting," Sterl said.By mid-century, southern France's extreme heat waves should be around 111 degrees and then near 118 by the end of the century, Sterl's climate models predict. In the 1990s, that region's extreme heat wave peaked at 104 degrees; in the 1950s, the worst heat wave peaked around 91 degrees, according to Sterl.

Calif. firefighters battle more than 1,400 blazes (June 30, 2008)
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The good news in northern California is that more than a thousand wildfires aren't growing. The bad news: There's no relief in sight. No new major fires had broken out Sunday as fire crews inched closer to getting some of the largest of 1,420 blazes surrounded, according to the state Office of Emergency Services. Some 364,600 acres-or almost 570 square miles-have burned. A "red flag warning"-meaning the most extreme fire danger-was still in effect for Northern California until 8 a.m. EDT Monday. And the coming days and months are expected to bring little relief. Lower-than-average rainfall and record levels of parched vegetation likely mean a long, fiery summer throughout northern California, according to the Forest Service's state fire outlook released last week. The fires burning now were mostly sparked by lightning storms that were unusually intense for so early in the season. But summer storms would probably be even fiercer, according to the Forest Service. CLIP

Global Warming's Twin Evil: Wildfires and Drought
The facts are unequivocal, and point to a troubling future ahead. Over 850 fires, scorching some 200,000 acres, have set a new 2008 record for early-season wildfires in California. And from March to May precipitation has been the lowest since the inception of record keeping in 1894. In California as well as throughout the West, mountain snowmelts are occurring earlier, and winter storms are arriving later, extending the fire season by at least several weeks. On June 5, 2008 Governor Schwarzenegger declared a state-wide drought. Droughts fuel wildfires. Across western North America global warming has caused prolonged droughts - some areas are now entering their 13th year - and warmer temperatures. These are the same kind of conditions that led to the mega fires of 2003 and 2007. What's more, in California and throughout the West, millions of acres of drought have created tinder-dry kindling through weakened forests that have been ravaged by billions of indigenous bark beetles and disease. Currently, there is no serious policy being implemented to clear out these dead trees, fireproof communities and inform residents of a plan of action. CLIP

Some Shun Wireless Internet (May 28, 2008)
In the modern word, people migrate toward areas with wireless Internet, or Wi-Fi, to try to stay plugged in. They sit, hot coffee at hand, for hours on end in cafes with signs proclaiming to be wireless hotspots. But some people have the opposite reaction to the wireless movement. Instead of seeking out the freedom to log on anywhere, anytime, they run away. "If I walk into a room or building that has Wi-Fi, my most immediate sign is that the front of my right thigh goes numb," said Arthur Firstenberg, 57, of Santa Fe, N.M. "If I don't leave, I'll get short of breath, chest pains and the numbness will spread." Firstenberg is one of a small group of people who believe they have Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS), a condition in which they are highly sensitive to electromagnetic fields and experience pain or other symptoms when they encounter them. People with electromagnetic hypersensitivity claim to experience a variety of non-specific symptoms, including headache, fatigue, nausea, burning and itchy skin, and muscle aches. These symptoms are subjective and vary between individuals, which makes the condition difficult to study. "There are those who believe that the various and sundry electronic devices have these magnetic waves that affect the nervous system," said Dr. James Toole, professor of neurology and public health sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. But experts are divided about the validity of such claims.

It is inconceivable that the G8 could consider such a reversal, especially in a time when increasing food prices are making it ever more difficult for families to make ends meet. But the final decision hasn’t been made yet, and we have a critical opportunity to influence the outcome.

Please tell the G8 to deliver on their promises:

We call upon you to build on recent success in fighting extreme poverty by delivering your commitments on healthcare, agriculture and education and by helping citizens in developing countries in their efforts to improve governance and fight corruption.

This potential reversal comes at a time when we are seeing results from investments in development. For example, thanks to distribution of bed nets and increased access to antimalarial drugs, in Rwanda both deaths and cases of malaria have dropped by two-thirds since mid-2006.

As malaria still kills around one million people a year, it’s clear that we must replicate success stories like this. But it won’t happen if the G8 backtrack on their commitments.

A Simple Request to the G8
2008 is a landmark year in the fight against poverty and disease. The world is halfway to 2015 when the Millennium Goals must be achieved, but Africa is perilously off track. 2008 is also the halfway point between 2005 and 2010 when many G8 promises to Africa must be met such as the commitment to provide an additional $25 billion in effective aid for Africa. The G8 are dangerously behind on these landmark commitments. In 2008, G8 leaders have the opportunity -- and responsibility -- to put weight behind their words. The Petition: "We call upon you to build on recent success in fighting extreme poverty by delivering your commitments on healthcare, agriculture and education and by helping citizens in developing countries in their efforts to improve governance and fight corruption." A compiled petition with your individual comment will be presented to G8 leaders. Monday, the Financial Times reported that the G8 leaders may be planning to backtrack on their promises to the world’s poor. Yesterday, Reuters reported tensions are building between African and G8 leaders as the G8 fail to deliver on their aid commitments. This news is disappointing, and shows that our efforts are desperately needed. Please join me in sending a message to the G8 that they can’t put progress against poverty in jeopardy. We only get so many opportunities to put pressure on eight of the world’s most powerful leaders, and it’s crucial that we make the most of this one.



G8 committed to doubling Africa aid

TOKYO (AFP) - Leaders of the Group of Eight industrial powers will confirm promises to double aid to Africa at a summit next week but are divided on a timeframe for boosting health spending, a G8 source said Thursday.

The G8 leaders, meeting next week in Japan, "have no intention of backtracking on their commitment," the source who is closely involved in the negotiations told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The G8 nations -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States -- pledged at a summit in Gleneagles, Scotland in 2005 to double their aid to Africa by 2010.

Recent press reports have said that they may backtrack on that pledge during their summit starting Monday in the mountain resort of Toyako.

The G8 source denied that, but said countries were still divided on the timetable for other aid to Africa -- in particular, 60 billion dollars pledged at last year's G8 summit in Heiligendamm, Germany to fight disease.

A draft declaration obtained by AFP says the G8 "reiterates its commitment" to provide at least "60 billion dollars in aid for fighting infectious diseases and strengthening of health systems as set out in Heiligendamm."

The source said that host Japan and Britain were pushing for a firm date for the health spending to "give it more credibility," but that Canada and Italy were hesitant.

Activists have been trying to ramp up pressure ahead of the Group of Eight summit to force nations to fulfil the commitments made at Gleneagles.

One, a pressure group backed by U2 rocker Bono, issued a report last month which said that the G8 nations were falling far short of their commitments to double aid to Africa, calling it a "disgrace."

The report found that only Japan had already doubled aid but said Tokyo's commitment was not ambitious to begin with. Of the donors, Britain has done best by boosting aid to Africa by the greatest volume, the study found.

"The funds and the resources that were promised in Gleneagles have not been forthcoming," Joseph Ssuuna, secretary general of the Zambia-based Pelum group representing smallholder farmers in Africa, told a news conference in Tokyo.

He noted that this year marked the halfway point for the UN-backed Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which include halving poverty around the world by 2015.

"Japan can actually force other developed countries to honestly put their money in MDGs, very global aspirations that we all agreed to," he said.

Japan has invited leaders of seven African nations -- Algeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania -- along with the African Union chairman to hold an outreach summit with the G8.

Japan in May hosted a separate summit, bringing 40 African heads of state to Yokohama near Tokyo, where it pledged to double its assistance to Africa again by 2012 despite recent budget cuts to its overall international aid budget.

Takumo Yamada, a leader of the NGO Forum meeting on the summit's sidelines, said that the Toyako meet would be "a historic failure" if it neglected promises to Africa.

"The situation of poor people in developing nations has worsened due to climate change and the food crisis," he said.

Japan, if it fails to lead, "would become the target of strong criticism for hosting the first summit that ignored the promises of Gleneagles," Yamada said.



World Bank chief urges G8 to act now as "world entering danger zone"

WASHINGTON, July 2 (Xinhua) -- World Bank President Robert B. Zoellick has called on leaders of the G8 as well as the major oil producers to act now to deal with surging food and energy prices, warning that the world is now "entering a danger zone."

Zoellick's call is contained in a July 1 letter to the head of the upcoming G8 summit in Japan, in which the Bank, World Food Program (WFP) and International Monetary Fund estimate that about 10 billion dollars is needed to meet short term needs of people hit hardest by the crisis.

"What we are witnessing is not a natural disaster -- a silent tsunami or a perfect storm: It is a man-made catastrophe, and as such must be fixed by people," Zoellick said in the letter made available to Xinhua on Wednesday.

"I urge the Group of Eight countries, in concert with major oil producers, to act now to address this crisis. This is a test of the global system to help the most vulnerable, and it cannot afford to fail," said the World Bank chief.

He said the G8 made a commitment at the Gleneagles Summit in 2005 to boost overall development aid, to Africa in particular, by2010, noting such aid was needed now, more than ever, as Africa accounted for two thirds of the countries most under stress by the food and fuel crisis.

"For 41 countries, the combined impact of high food, fuel and other commodity prices since January 2007 represents a negative shock to GDP of between 3 and 10 percent," he said. "These numbers translate into broken lives, and stunted potential. For the most vulnerable, especially poor children, they mean malnutrition, reduced resistance to disease, and too often death."

"Record oil prices and high and rising food costs threaten a growing number of countries with rising poverty and social instability. Already we have seen food riots in over 30 countries, and unrest over high fuel prices is spreading. The urban poor are especially affected by the double hit of food and fuel," he warned.

In his letter, Zoellick urged the G8 to consider two new measures to "improve the world's ability to cope with an on-going food crisis."

The first was a UN assessment on guaranteeing a portion of funding for the World Food Program. The second was to study the merits of an internationally coordinated "virtual" humanitarian strategic reserve system for food emergencies.

"The international community is facing an unprecedented test in this new era of globalization: the question is whether we can act swiftly to help those most in need, "he said.

"For globalization to work successfully and achieve its promise, it must be inclusive and sustainable. This means acting now in the interests of the poor who are most affected by this double jeopardy of food and fuel crisis, and who are least able to help themselves," he added.

Tomgram: Nick Turse, The Pentagon's Stealth Corporations

At $34 billion, you're already counting pretty high. After all, that's Harvard's endowment; it's the amount of damage the triple hurricanes -- Charley, Ivan, and Jeanne -- inflicted in 2004; it's what car crashes involving 15-to-17-year-old teenage drivers mean yearly in "medical expenses, lost work, property damage, quality of life loss and other related costs"; it's the loans the nation's largest, crippled, home lender, Countrywide Financial, holds for home-equity lines of credit and second liens; it's Citigroup's recent write-off, mainly for subprime exposure; it's what New Jersey's tourism industry is worth -- and, according to the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, it's the minimal figure for the Pentagon's "black budget" for fiscal year 2009 -- money for, among other things, "classified weapons purchases and development," money for which the Pentagon will remain unaccountable because almost no Americans will have any way of knowing what it's being spent for.

Now, imagine that, due to a little more Pentagon/Bush administration wizardry, even this black budget estimate is undoubtedly a low-ball figure. One reason is simple enough: The proposed $541 billion Pentagon 2009 budget doesn't even include money for actual wars. George W. Bush's wars are all paid for by "supplemental" bills like the $162 billion one Congress will soon pass -- so the Department of Defense's $34 billion black budget skips "war-related funding." This means that even the overall figure for that budget remains darker than we might imagine (as in "black hole"). The Pentagon not only produces stealth planes, it is, in budgetary terms, a stealth operation. If honestly accounted, the actual Pentagon yearly budget, including all the "military-related" funds salted away elsewhere, is probably now more than $1 trillion a year.

There is, however, another stealth side to the Pentagon -- the corporate side where a range of giant companies you've never heard of are gobbling up our tax dollars at phenomenal rates. Nick Turse, author of the single best account of how our lives are being militarized, our civilian economy Pentagonized, and the Pentagon privatized -- I'm talking about The Complex: How the Military Invades Our Everyday Lives -- now turns to the stealth corporate side of the Pentagon to give us a glimpse into the larger black hole into which our dollars pour.



Billion-Dollar Babies: Five Stealth Pentagon Contractors Reaping Billions of Tax Dollars

The top Pentagon contractors, like death and taxes, almost never change. In 2002, the massive arms dealers Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman ranked one, two, and three among Department of Defense contractors, taking in $17 billion, $16.6 billion, and $8.7 billion. Lockheed, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman did it again in 2003 ($21.9, $17.3, and $11.1 billion); 2004 ($20.7, $17.1, and $11.9 billion); 2005 ($19.4, $18.3, and $13.5 billion); 2006 ($26.6, $20.3, and $16.6 billion); and, not surprisingly, 2007 as well ($27.8, $22.5, and $14.6 billion). Other regulars receiving mega-tax-funded payouts in a similarly clockwork-like manner include defense giants General Dynamics, Raytheon, the British weapons maker BAE Systems, and former Halliburton subsidiary KBR, as well as BP, Shell, and other power players from the military-petroleum complex.

With the basic Pentagon budget now clocking in at roughly $541 billion per year -- before "supplemental" war funding for Iraq, Afghanistan, and the President's Global War on Terror, as well as national security spending by other agencies, are factored in -- even Lockheed's hefty $28 billion take is a small percentage of the massive total. Obviously, significant sums of money are headed to other companies. However, most of them, including some of the largest, are all but unknown even to Pentagon-watchers and antiwar critics with a good grasp of the military industrial complex.

Last year, in a piece headlined "Washington's $8 Billion Shadow," Vanity Fair published an exposé of one of the better known large stealth contractors, SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation). SAIC, however, is just one of tens of thousands of Pentagon contractors. Many of these firms receive only tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Pentagon every year. Some take home millions, tens of millions, or even hundreds of millions of dollars.

Then there's a select group that are masters of the universe in the ever-expanding military-corporate complex, regularly scoring more than a billion tax dollars a year from the Department of Defense. Unlike Lockheed, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman, however, most of these billion-dollar babies manage to fly beneath the radar of media (not to mention public) attention. If appearing at all, they generally do so innocuously in the business pages of newspapers. When it comes to their support for the Pentagon's wars and occupations in Afghanistan and Iraq, they are, in media terms, missing in action.

So, who are some of these mystery defense contractors you've probably never heard of? Here are snapshot portraits, culled largely from their own corporate documents, of five of the Pentagon's secret billion-dollar babies:

5. Evergreen International Airlines

Total DoD dollars in 2007: $1,105,610,723

A privately held global aviation services company, it has subsidiaries in related industries such as helicopter aviation (Evergreen Helicopters, Inc.), as well as a few unrelated efforts like producing "agricultural, nursery and wine products" (Evergreen Agricultural Enterprises, Inc.). Evergreen has been on the Pentagon's payroll for a long time. Back in 2004, Ed Connolly, the executive vice president of Evergreen International Airlines, stated, "Evergreen has flown continuously for the [U.S. Air Force] Air Mobility Command since 1975 and is proud to continue its long standing history of supporting the U.S. Armed Forces global missions with quality and reliable services."

Not surprisingly, Evergreen has been intimately involved in the occupation of Iraq. In fact, in 2004, the company received "approximately 200 awards for its support of international airlift services during the Iraq war" from the Air Force's Air Mobility Command. An Air Force general even handed out these medals and certificates of achievement to Evergreen's employees.

In Amnesty International's 2006 report, "Below the Radar: Secret Flights to Torture and ‘Disappearance,'" the human rights organization noted that Evergreen was one of only a handful of private companies with current permits to land at U.S. military bases worldwide. That same year, the company even airlifted FOX News personality Bill O'Reilly and his TV show crew to Kuwait and Iraq to meet and greet troops, sign books and pictures, and hand out trinkets. And just last year the company was part of a consortium, including such high profile commercial carriers as American, Delta, and United Airlines that the Pentagon awarded a "$1,031,154,403 firm fixed-price contract for international airlift services… [that] is expected to be completed September 2008."

Under the Radar

All told, these five stealth corporations from the military-corporate complex received more than $8.9 billion in taxpayer dollars in 2007. To put this into perspective, that sum is almost $2 billion more than the Bush administration's proposed 2009 budget for the Environmental Protection Agency. Put another way, it's about nine times what one-sixth of the world's population spent, on any given day, on food last year.

Tens of thousands of defense contractors -- from well-known "civilian" corporations (like Coca-Cola, Kraft, and Dell) to tiny companies -- have fattened up on the Pentagon and its wars. Most of the time, large or small, they fly under the radar and are seldom identified as defense contractors at all. So it's hardly surprising that firms like Harris and Evergreen, without name recognition outside their own worlds, can take in billions in taxpayer dollars without notice or comment in our increasingly militarized civilian economy.

When the history of the Iraq War is finally written, chances are that these five billion-dollar babies, and most of the other defense contractors involved in making the U.S. occupation possible, will be left out. Until we begin coming to grips with the role of such corporations in creating the material basis for an imperial foreign policy, we'll never be able to grasp fully how the Pentagon works and why we so regularly make war in, and carry out occupations of, distant lands.

USA The Dark Matters of Dark Energy: American Military Pursues Antigravity Weapons

Several recent controversial discoveries in the world of physics may portend the arrival of new weapons of mass destruction far more powerful and compact than atomic bombs. An updated summary of an on-going investigation, by the founder of:

In recent years it has been discovered that our universe is being blown apart by a mysterious anti-gravity effect called dark energy. Mainstream physicists are scrambling to explain this mysterious acceleration in the expansion of the universe. Some physicists even believe that the expansion will lead to "The Big Rip" when all of the matter in the universe is torn asunder -- from clusters of galaxies in deep space down to the tiniest atomic particles. The universe now appears to be made of two unknowns -- roughly 23 percent is dark matter, an invisible source of gravity, and roughly 73 percent is dark energy, an invisible anti-gravity force. Ordinary matter constitutes perhaps 4 percent of the universe.

A few years ago the British science news journal, "New Scientist," revealed that the American military was pursuing new types of exotic bombs -- including a new class of isomeric gamma ray weapons. Unlike conventional atomic and hydrogen bombs, the new weapons would trigger the release of energy by absorbing radiation, and respond by re-emitting a far more powerful radiation. In this potential category of gamma-ray weapons, a nuclear isomer absorbs x-rays and re-emits higher frequency gamma rays. The emitted gamma radiation has been reported to release 60 times the energy of the x-rays that trigger the effect.

The discovery of the isomer triggering effect was first reported in 1999 by an international group of scientists. Although this controversial development has remained fairly obscure, it has not been hidden from the public.

Beyond the visible part of defense research is an immense underground of secret projects considered so sensitive that their very existence is denied. These so-called "black budget programs" are deliberately kept from the public eye and from most political leaders. CNN reported that in the United States the black budget projects for Year 2004 were funded at a level of more than 20 billion dollars.

In the summer of 2000 I contacted Nick Cook, the former aviation editor and presently a key spokesperson for Jane's Information Group, the private international military affairs publication company. Cook had been investigating black budget super-secret research into exotic physics for advanced propulsion technologies. Cook was intrigued when I pointed out the apparent connections between various private investors, defense contractors, NASA, INSCOM (American military intelligence), and the CIA.

I had been monitoring electronic discussions between various American and Russian scientists theorizing about rectifying the quantum vacuum for advanced space drive. Several groups of scientists, partitioned into various research organizations, were exploring what NASA called "Breakthrough Propulsion Physics" -- exotic technologies for advanced space travel to traverse the vast distances between stars. Partly inspired by the pulp science fiction stories of their youth, and partly by reports of multiple radar tracking tapes of unidentified objects performing impossible maneuvers in the sky, these scientists were on a quest to uncover the most likely new physics for star travel. The NASA program was run by Marc Millis, financed under the Advanced Space Transportation Program Office (ASTP). Joe Firmage, then the 28-year-old Silicon Valley CEO of the three billion dollar Internet firm US Web, began to fund research in parallel with NASA.

Firmage hired NASA Ames nano-technology scientist Creon Levit, to run his International Space Sciences Organization, a move which apparently alarmed the management at NASA. The San Francisco based Hearst Examiner reported that NASA's Office of Inspector General assigned Special Agent Keith Tate to investigate whether any proprietary NASA technology might have been leaking into the private sector.

Antigravity Weapons

In the summer of 2002 an unusual story by Nick Cook appeared in Jane's Defence Weekly. Cook revealed that the American aerospace contractor Boeing was investigating antigravity technology at their Phantom Works facility.

Now it can be proven that the American military was also investigating antigravity technology for weapons research. Evidence that the US Military had an interest in developing so-called antigravity technology for new super-weapons systems can be found in a 2001 Dept. of Defense budget document.

Buried in the obscure, "Annual Report on Cooperative Agreements and Other Transactions Entered into During FY2001," the US Army Aviation and Missile Command awarded funds to experimentally test superconductors for the manipulation of the gravitational field.

Heading this effort was Dr. Ning Li and her company AC Gravity Inc.

Ning Li predicted effects similar to the claims of Russian scientist Evgeny Podkletnov, which apparently had sparked Boeing's interest. Of primary concern for the military are the claims of coherent repulsive antigravity beams, capable of disrupting physical materials. Recently Podkletnov has described new experiments demonstrating an "impulse gravity" effect. Cook and others have suggested that gravity beam weapons might be used in a "Star Wars" missile defense system.

According to the abstract for the Gravito-Electro Magnetic Superconductivity Experiment:

The ability to generate gravitational forces artificially would allow for new forms of propulsion, new ways of controlling missiles and gun-launched munitions, the lowering of weight of heavy vehicles (i.e., making a 70 ton tank appear to weight much less), and the potential of deflecting or countering the guidance systems of missiles which rely on inertial guidance (like theater or intercontinental ballistic missiles)."

The potential of the cutting edge technology that is hoped to result from the confirmation of the experiment being conducted under this effort is of primary interest to the Government...The success of this experiment would be of enormous value to DOD weapons and weapon systems."

I recently uncovered an even more bizarre item in the formerly top secret DIA STAR GATE psychic spy program files.

A spinning gravity device is described by DIA Source 011 in Project 8914-I from 1989.

The second object/device is quite unusual, even a little bizarre...this object is very large and tall, it spins around a vertical axis, counter-clockwise, like a gigantic gyroscope.

This device can spin at incredible speeds... this effect is more of an illusion than a reality, which is caused by warping time and space...

Device: reaches maximum RPM, waves of energy are being drawn into the center/core ... this energy appears to be electromagnetic in nature ... drawn from the ultraviolet (purple) end of the spectrum ... concepts associated with object/device are; research, energy, space, time, warping of space and time, atomic, sub-atomic, and the idea of a breakthrough in physics.

This energy/force seems to be related to the force we call gravity, but not gravity as we currently describe and understand it at present..."

The Sub-quantum Bomb

While researching exotic propulsion technologies Cook had heard rumors of a new kind of weapon, a "sub-quantum atomic bomb," being whispered about in what he called the "dark halls" of defense research.

Sub-quantum physics is a controversial re-interpretation of quantum theory, based on so-called pilot wave theories, where an information field controls quantum particles.

The late Professor David Bohm showed that the predictions of ordinary quantum mechanics could be recast into a pilot wave information theory. Recently Anthony Valentini of the Perimeter Institute suggested that ordinary quantum theory may be a special case of a family of pilot wave theories, leaving open the possibility of new and exotic non-quantum technologies.

A small number of French, Serbian and Ukrainian physicists have been working on new sub-quantum theories of extended electrons and solitons, so perhaps a sub-quantum bomb is not entirely out of the question.

Even if rumors of a sub-quantum bomb are pure fantasy, there is no question that mainstream physicists have seriously contemplated a phase transition in the quantum vacuum. The quantum vacuum defies common sense, because empty space in quantum field theory is actually filled with virtual particles. These virtual particles appear and disappear far too quickly to be detected directly, but their existence has been confirmed by experiments that demonstrate their influence on ordinary matter.

Such research should be forbidden!"

In the early 1970's Soviet physicists were concerned that the vacuum of our universe was only one possible state of empty space. The fundamental state of empty space is called the "true vacuum." Our universe was thought to reside in a "false vacuum," protected from the true vacuum by the wall of our world. A change from one vacuum state to another is known as a phase transition. This is analogous to the transition between frozen and liquid water.

Lev Okun, a Russian physicist and historian, recalls Andrei Sakharov, the father of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, expressing his concern about research into the phase transitions of the vacuum. If the wall between vacuum states was to be breached, calculations showed that an unstoppable expanding bubble would continue to grow until it destroyed our entire universe.

Sakharov declared, "Such research should be forbidden!"

According to Okun, Sakharov feared that an experiment might accidentally trigger a vacuum phase transition.

Could the wall of our universe be breached from within? The amount of energy required to punch a hole through the wall appeared to be enormous, and no known natural physical phenomena, even the most energetic, had punched through either. A recent report commissioned to examine potential dangers at the Large Hadron Collider, a next generation particle accelerator, concluded that we are safe to the best of our existing scientific estimates.

Others are not so certain.

Recently cosmologist Max Tegmark and philosopher Nick Bostrom took a new look at the possibility of catastrophic destruction of our world and our universe. They noted that "One might think that since life here on Earth has survived for nearly 4 Gyr [billion years], such catastrophic events must be extremely rare. Unfortunately, such an argument is flawed, giving us a false sense of security. It fails to take into account the observation selection effect that precludes any observer from observing anything other than that their own species has survived up to the point where they make the observation."

If someone out in the depths of space has already punched through the wall, we will never know about it. Since the reaction spreads outward at the speed of light, it is impossible for a signal to arrive ahead of the reaction in order to warn us of our impending doom.

At least one of the Russian physicists I had corresponded with was said to have been a former associate of Andrei Sakharov. He strongly hinted at new theories the Russians had developed which allow for the manipulation of the fundamental constants of nature, but he never revealed more than a sketch of his ideas. His claim was that a breakthrough was within reach, perhaps within five years.

Recent theoretical explorations may suggest another approach to the physics of the vacuum. Some physicists have speculated that the invisible gravitating dark matter could be the other side of the invisible dark energy coin, and that suggests the possibility of manipulating the vacuum for energy release. If a controllable parameter could be found to mediate the balance between the invisible dark forces, the result would unleash the vacuum energy of creation in all of its awful power and majesty.

If it were possible to control the dark sides of the force then spacetime, the arena where everything we know takes place, could be bent and twisted with infinitely greater ease than was ever suspected. This would open Pandora's box to everything from vacuum energy weapons of mass destruction (capable of destroying the universe!) to spacetime warp drives and time machines.

A quick survey of the international electronic archive of physics papers at shows that research into the vacuum of spacetime is alive and well. Most authors are independent researchers struggling with limited funding and resources, yet their theoretical results suggest that somewhere in Nick Cook's black world a major breakthrough has already taken place.

Most likely the United States and Russia are in the lead. China, France, Ukraine, Iran, India, Cuba and Saudi Arabia all have scientists actively pursuing the fundamental physics that determine the fabric of our reality, and are seeking the theory and the means to access the enormous energies locked inside of the vacuum since the creation of the universe.

Building a Dark Energy Vacuum Bomb?

Recently Dr. Jack Sarfatti, a controversial independent physicist warned, "If done too fast with a large enough Exotic Vacuum Object this would be a powerful bomb -- more powerful than thermonuclear."

For many years experimentalist Ken Shoulders has claimed that electrons are behaving in ways thought to be impossible. A new and previously unknown force appears to be binding the electrons at short range into clusters of electron charge. Shoulders calls these clusters Exotic Vacuum Objects, or EVO's.

Shoulders describes this as "a short-range force resembling a positive charge negating the effect of repulsive electronic charge."

Other independent groups of scientists working in several nations have noted that the Shoulders' short-range force may be a key factor in so-called cold-fusion reactions. Although cold-fusion has been the pariah of the physics establishment, the American government has re-examined the evidence and the possibility of unusual fusion reactions remains an open question.

One of Ken Shoulder's papers suggests nefarious uses for charged cluster technology based on EVO's:

The author can easily imagine a scenario where instructions are generated with enough clarity for about 1 person in 1,000 to perform the necessary operations to refine and store a gallon jug of electrons in the form of Exotic Vacuum Objects (EVO's) ... there is no doubt that this jug would be light enough to carry and be highly sensitive to destabilization of a catastrophic nature ..."

Although Sarfatti hopes for carefully controlled release of energy from the EVO's, both Sarfatti and Shoulders warn that rapid release of a large EVO would be explosive, perhaps more powerful than a thermonuclear device.

Recently Shoulders claims to have produced what he calls "dark matter projectiles" in the laboratory. Dark matter is the elusive gravitating substance that makes up about a third of the universe. Scientists call it dark matter because it is invisible and can only be detected by the gravitational effect it produces on ordinary matter, which is a mere four percent of the known universe.

In a recent paper Shoulders connected his work to the data provided by the Canadian independent experimentalist John Hutchison, and Russian scientist Evgeny Podkletnov. Both Hutchison and Podkletnov have reported unusual gravity-like effects coming from their experimental test equipment.

Hutchison's work was previously the subject of a secret investigation by a team from Los Alamos, as reported by Nick Cook in his book, "The Hunt for Zero Point."

Shoulders refers to the dark matter component of his experiments as coming from the EVO's, or Exotic Vacuum Objects. A new force is required to bind electrons into these larger clusters, involving the quantum vacuum.

In the case of Podkletnov's latest experiments, a force beam is said to emerge from his apparatus and is capable of punching through materials like concrete blocks as if they were hit by a sledgehammer.

Ken Shoulders' work and his interpretation of the Podkletnov and Hutchison research is of interest on many fronts, including new weapons of destruction such as force beam antimissile systems and perhaps EVO-type atomic bombs.

Another potential application that should be of enormous interest to the CIA and the NSA is mentioned by Shoulders in his paper, "Projectiles from the Dark Side." Shoulders notes that, "A type of radar using dark matter projectiles...capable of exceedingly deep penetration into material objects leaves no place for anything to hide...Interaction of specially prepared gray EVO's with complex organic structures...raises the hope for finding a high-rate, electronic growth process for morphing complex EVO like structures. Can the spirit world be far from this?"

Black Budget World

Even if the black budget world has yet to unleash the enormous potential of vacuum energy, there are signs that those in power may have begun to take notice. Dr. Harold Puthoff, a scientist with strong government connections, has previously worked on classified projects for the CIA, is a major proponent of vacuum energy physics. Nick Cook's book, "The Hunt for Zero Point," and stories on zero point energy in "Jane's Defence Weekly" have also brought attention to the dangers and military potential of vacuum research. The American intelligence community financed so-called psychic spies for over twenty years and through four presidential administrations. It is highly unlikely that they would ignore the potential of the quantum vacuum.

Scientists argue over the details of the theory of vacuum, but generally agree that there is a potential for weapons of mass destruction.

When Bush opened his mouth to speak I shouted "Defend the Constitution, Impeach Bush!" I repeated that several times, as people nearby knocked me over, cops handcuffed me, people gave me smiles and thumbs up signs. They threw me out and a couple of more defenders of our Constitution behind me, and then a few more, and then a few more. The handcuffed citizens who'd done their duty kept comign down the hill. They did not arrest us but did give us a ride down the mountain where we joined a crowd of protesters in the road who greeted Bush's limo coming and going.


The Last Fourth of July

On the first Fourth of July, the members of the Continental Congress signed a declaration of their disloyalty to the third George (King GeorgeIII) to rule the empire, denouncing his abuses of power. They complained of harassment by his troops, of his elevating the military above civilian power, of his denying people a fair trial by jury and instead transporting them overseas to be tried on false accusations, and in general of rendering the colonies almost as unpleasant and fearful a place to dwell as occupied Iraq would one day become.

On the last Fourth of July, the third George to rule the new empire had spread his troops across the country and the globe, placed military above civilian power, thrown out the right to a trial by jury and established his right to transport people overseas to be tried on false accusations. In preparation for the great celebration, the Supreme Court symbolically restored the right to a fair trial and King George eliminated the Supreme Court by ignoring it. Congress, in turn, stamped its credentials as a body of loyal Tories and assured its future as a royal court by officially eliminating the Fourth Amendment.

The Fourth Amendment had read: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

King George III and his court established the right of the king to warrantless searches, as well as to seizure of property and kidnapping of persons. These rights were simply assumed at the start of his reign and later formalized, as were his rights to violate other amendments to the Constitution.

The First Amendment had read: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Now, Congress no longer makes the laws at all. George makes them, and he makes them to fund and promote a particular religion, he kidnaps and detains and abuses members of other religions, and he eliminates the freedom of speech except in Free Speech Zones, an invention of his that would earlier have been known as Fenced Animal Pens. George has also detained and tortured members of the press, prosecuted them in court, and shot and bombed them. There is no redress of grievances. If George told you it was safe to work at "Ground Zero" and now you're coughing up blood, keep coughing! If you died after George ignored all the warnings prior to September 11, 2001, stay dead!

The Second Amendment had read: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Now state militias have been put under control of the national government and sent overseas to kill or be killed committing crimes on behalf of the king.

The Third Amendment had read: "No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law."

Now, many of the people are not even quartered in houses, but are made homeless by the king's policies, including his abject failure to protect the people from hurricanes, floods, and loan sharks. But the soldiers are quartered in over 6,000 military bases in this country and another 1,000 in other people's countries, all paid for by the people, including the homeless.

Amendment Five had read: "No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

Now grand juries and even trials are optional luxuries, and the king will seize what he chooses to seize. George issued an Executive Order on July 17, 2007, that authorizes the Treasury Department to seize the assets of American citizens on the basis of a non-judicial process.

The Sixth Amendment had read: "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense."

Now, people have the right to a very slow and private imprisonment, with no trial or jury, nowhere near where any crime may have been committed - and in fact there need not even be any crime alleged.

The Seventh Amendment had read: "In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law."

Now, this right is gone where the value of the crime is under twenty million dollars. If it is over twenty million dollars it is, by definition, not a crime.

The Eighth Amendment had read: "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

Now, no bail may be permitted at all, and the most hideous forms of torture are no longer unusual.

The Ninth Amendment had read: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

This has now been reversed. Whereas the main body of the Constitution reads: "The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it," it has now been established that because the Constitution does not actually say that anyone ever has the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus, nobody does. Just as nobody has any other rights.

The Tenth Amendment had read: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."

Now, all powers belong to the king, whether delegated to the Congress, left to the states and the people, or never hitherto imagined.

On the First Fourth of July, the signers of the Declaration of Independence declared: "A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people ... We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America ... do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; ... And for the support of this Declaration ... we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."

On the Last Fourth of July, the subjects of the new King George thought long and hard. Would they grill hotdogs, turn up the air-conditioning, cheer for militarism, and wait for total tyranny. Or would they go to the local offices of their senators and say: "If you follow through on eliminating our Fourth Amendment, we will be through with you. We do not care what you threaten us with. We do not care what faction or party you belong to. You will restore our Fourth Amendment or you will be finished in public life." Will they go to their representatives, also home for the holiday, and say "You must now put one piece of the Constitution back where it belongs, the fundamental piece, the keystone on which all else depends. You must impeach this president, join our cause, and enjoy our gratitude, or we will end your career as court jester and replace you with a representative of the will of the Free and Independent People that our ancestors gave their lives to create."

This is Matthew, greeting you with love and observations from all of us at this station.

It has been with sadness that enlightened souls in spirit realms and those in physical civilizations have long watched the people of the United States annually celebrate Independence Day. The truth is that the bloodshed and destruction in the war for independence was for naught, the "victory" was a sham and so is the sovereignty bestowed by the Constitution. Indeed "the home of the brave," but never "the land of the free." The people of that country never have been free of control. Never have their voices been heeded nor has meeting the needs of the nation been the foremost objective. In statehood just as in the colonies, the nation has been inextricably connected to England because one of the most deeply entrenched strongholds of covert control is there and the other is in the Vatican; the former is political, legal and economic, and the latter is religious, but these forces have worked in tandem to instill the beliefs and govern the scope of activities of the citizenry.

From the onset of declaring "independence," every war in which this country has been involved, including the sorrow of the civil war that divided families and national allegiance; every economic upturn and downturn; every acquisition of land; every presidential election and piece of legislation; every facet of the judicial system's operation and taxation policies and corporate growth have been manipulated by the succession of those controllers who systematically destroyed the vision and purpose of the states' founding fathers.

I comment on the effects of that influence in the United States because of the fireworks spectacles and stirring rhetoric attendant to today's celebration of independence. However, the combined forces of which I speak—in current times often referred to as the Illuminati, the Secret Government, the New World Order, the Elitists or the Neocons—have been ruling lives of peoples worldwide for many centuries.

But this year we are rejoicing because TRUE INDEPENDENCE—freedom for ALL life on Earth—is on your near horizon! The long era of the controllers is seeing its end as their crimes against humankind and Nature are being exposed in both trickle-up and trickle-down fashion. This is becoming more and more evident even in major media despite the controllers' attempts to stifle emerging truths. The higher energies engulfing the planet cannot be weakened much less halted, and these energies are awakening minds to search for truth and opening hearts to actively work for peace for all humankind and respect for all life.

In this regard, let me speak about my mother's experience while attending her grandson's recent graduation exercise at a Jesuit university known for academic excellence and its graduates' eventual influential positions. She was anticipating religious overtones, but in listening to the president, whom the church has called to a Vatican position, she kept thinking "God could be saying this." Finally, with some feelings of embarrassment at her delay, my mother realized that indeed it was God speaking through that god-self president who urged the students to turn off TV, computers and hand-held instruments, and in the silence listen to their souls; to live from their hearts; to use their learning to make the world a better place for all people, where differences are respected instead of divisive; to work for a peaceful world. The young woman goddess-self who gave the valedictory speech was equally inspirational in her address. I was there and feeling the combined energy, so I can tell you that my mother's sensations were shared by the thousands of others who also felt immensely uplifted by the light generated by both speeches and reassured in knowing that the aspiring and inspiring young graduates will become leaders in their respective fields.

That occasion exemplifies what is happening throughout your world at every age level, every ethnic, cultural, social, educational, professional, religious, business, artistic and economic level. We can see clearly what you cannot—the ever-growing light emanating from more and more individuals and brilliant clusters of light radiating from larger and larger groups as kindred spirits are connecting. Individually and collectively you are responding to the higher frequencies and the energy of your intuitive awareness is a global energetic demand for truth to be revealed and peaceful, harmonious living to replace violence. It is true that helping to create Earth's Golden Age is why you chose and were selected to be where you are, doing what you're doing; but isn't it wondrous to know that because you are succeeding in your respective light-work missions—and you ARE!—beloved Earth is moving apace toward her magnificent goal!

So please do not allow anything to dim your light even momentarily. Much of what still is happening is sad indeed, and we weep with you at the on-going destruction of life and land. The dark energy streamers set in motion long ago must run their course, but now they are barely a flicker of their once flaming strength. Evolution, not revolution, is underway, and it is a process whereby your desires for benevolent changes are being honored within your own laws that were established in honesty and justness but subverted by dark minds to serve their purposes. You have seen some evidence of progress during the first half of your year 2008, and we can promise that you will be seeing much more during the second half as the power of the light continues its "clean sweep" of your world.

Now I shall comment on some topics readers have requested, but I ask that you keep in mind that in situations where the heavy hand of darkness still is at work, its lingering influence is weakening as each moment passes and the light is steadily growing in intensity. Plans based in darkness will not come to fruition, and all cruel and unjust laws, policies and traditions will be struck down and in their stead, love and fairness will reign.

We see presidential nominee Barack Obama's supporters' uneasiness about his recent statements and decisions that are disappointing and seem to contradict his previous stance. Because the next US president issue is of international interest and his momentum toward office is unstoppable, we hasten to assure that he is doing only what he must to ostensibly align himself with the expectations of the Illuminati. Although their power base is in tatters, they still have enough punch to sway election results by fraudulent vote count, bribery and life threats to families of anyone who opposes them. So do be at peace if the "public" Obama has become worrisome to you—it is like many other situations that are not what they appear to be and time will so tell. We can say this without jeopardizing his and his family's physical safety—not only are they surrounded by light warrior protectors, but who among potential assassins would give credence to what the "voice in her head" says?

Shortages of corn, rice, grains, seafood and other foodstuffs being caused by any means, including the attempt to force on farmers genetically altered seeds that produce crops without viable seeds for the next planting, are part of the dark plot to reduce the world's population; and the recent emphasis on ethanol as an alternative to gas for transportation fuel is but another part of that insidious plan.

In a closely related situation, most of Earth's weather and geophysical events are caused by technology used with malicious intent. The flooding and earthquakes that resulted in massive death tolls, ruined vast croplands, killed food animals, and left millions injured or homeless were intended to create the negativity that is generated by such devastation. Please remember that in previous messages I have told you that divine grace honors the soul level petitions for amended contracts of the people who perish en masse so they can leave their physical lives of unduly harsh deprivations and/or tyrannical oppression and continue their evolvement in spirit life.

With the few exceptions of carelessness or a sick-minded arsonist, the uncommon prevalence of wildfires also is due to abusive use of technology, and even though fire has a cleansing effect energetically, the intent of the perpetrators is rooted in darkness. Now, in a rare departure from conveying only our observations and awareness, I want to share with you a recent message received by one who is well known and respected by us and many other souls, because its great importance goes beyond the topic of fire. Fires Set off in California is Ecoterrorism

Greetings our brothers and sisters dwelling under the shade of our leaves and boughs of our branches. We are the Tree People, standing on your land-forms in all our majesty and grace. We sing to you through our branches and leaves, hoping the tune will 'catch you' and you will feel our essences and rejoice in our contact. We will talk to you now about the fires in the state of California, and the smoke shrouding your Mountain in Mt. Shasta, and covering you with soot and ashes and particles unhealthy to breathe.

These fires were targeted and set off by your secret government who are using Nature to burn our lives and pollute the air with our smoke to make you sick so that they can reduce the population through sickness and better control your lives through fear. It is the most 'smart' weapon they now have available, with the technology back-engineered from fallen space craft and given to them by the unholy negative extraterrestrials.

They knew exactly where the lightning strikes would hit, because they themselves precisely targeted the locations and then detonated the lightning charges. It is quite simple, and they have excelled in this kind of warfare, using all the forces of Nature and making it appear as if it is Nature herself who is responsible for this. Yes, Nature herself is creating some disasters in response to the disequilibrium in her body caused by humanity's total disregard for her life. But, we must say this, that most of these earthquakes, tsunamis, floodings, droughts, volcano eruptions, winds, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires — you name it — are now being deliberately caused by your governments to solve their problem of having too many of you on the surface, because too many people are too hard to control. The less people they have to control, the more they can put you into servitude to themselves — and this is their ultimate goal: to own you and to own the Earth.

We Trees stand here and watch it all unfold. We try to make contact with you, but you turn a deaf ear and blind eye to us, and ignore us as we stand silently right by your very side. We are here as your bastions of strength, your warriors in disguise, who when aligned with us can overthrow the tyranny of these dark ones by our combined strength and wisdom.

All the Forces of Nature are on your side, if you will but align with our consciousness and stand solidly with us to disarm them. We do this through our combined consciousnesses — for when we combine our consciousness, our Light exponentially magnifies and accelerates at speeds beyond your current imaginations — and the Light when exponentially magnified increases its Light Quotient which can disarm and neutralize and quell all negativity on Earth, leaving not only humanity, but all life-forms free to evolve as we were always meant to.

Do you see why it is so important to connect with us? You have heard of the term 'divide and conquer"? Well, this tactic is obvious here in the Nature realm, and the darkness knows this tactic so well. They have divided us, by separating us because of our different forms. Well, now you are onto their game, and it is not so difficult to figure it out, is it? Just unite with us, and we can be a force so great that even their best strategists would not know what to do, and would give up in alarm and flee their posts. You know this phrase well: 'united we stand, divided we fall.'

So stand with us in our strength, and we will carry you to Freedom. All other life forms are connected with us, as we are connected with all, except you humans who up until now have wanted no part of the rest of God's Creation. But since you are also part of God's Creation, why not join forces with all of us, not just our Tree People, but all of Nature's Creations, all of Nature's Life Forms, and lend your consciousness to all of ours, and we will be able to surmount and overcome all tyranny everywhere on Earth.

We invite you, our human brothers and sisters, to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Separation is part of the problem — actually, separation is the whole problem, and none of this would have occurred had you not separated yourselves from each other and from us. Then you could not have been fooled and deceived, because you would have had access through our combined group consciousnesses to know the truth of what is happening before it got so out of control. Now your life is controlled, rather than your controlling your life.

Thank you, Mother. I wish to add a comment to their statement "Now your life is controlled, rather than your controlling your life": Please hold foremost in your thoughts that your embracing, anchoring and radiating the power of the light is rapidly changing this situation!

Now I move on to other topics readers have questioned. The greatly respected journalist Tim Russet was investigating too deeply into areas where dark minds were operating, and like many others who also ventured into those pits of deception and corruption and could expose the facts, his life was abruptly ended. In this case, technology that can kill a body instantly without contact was used; in other situations fast-growing cancer has been technologically caused. In neither type of death is foul play normally suspected, unlike the suspicions aroused by claims of "suicide" or the unlikely "accidents" that befall people who uncover what the Illuminati and those they influence want to keep hidden.

The truth about religion will be proven by ancient records and more recent documents pertaining to religious dogma. You could say that some factual groundwork has been laid by the sexual molestation of children by Catholic priests coming to light, and the connection between science and spirituality becoming a topic of discussion is a chink in the armor of religious dogmas. However, the "shocking" revelations about religions' origins and purpose are still to emerge incrementally, and they will be disputed and even battled by the most fervent followers of any religion.

Keeping Iran on media center stage for the past two or so years and adding Israel's "national security" and the "risks" Pakistan presents along with the ominous picture of what's happening in Afghanistan is to keep the "war on terror" mentality alive and fear flowing about the prospect of a nuclear war. Saner minds know there is no troop power, no war machine equipment, and most important, no will among nations for a conquest that could escalate to incalculable loss of life or even planetary destruction. Furthermore, even if such a conquest is the intent of a few desperate dark minds, you who have read my messages and those from other knowledgeable off-planet sources know that the technology of our space family will once again successfully prevent such action if it is attempted.

Along this same line, their technology will prevent disastrous consequences from experiments in underground colliders or other types of research that could go terribly awry. Earth did not endure millennia of abuse to the point of death throes only have her planetary body be exploded by a few inquisitive scientists!

As for the presidential "election" in Zimbabwe, because of its tyrannical dictator, that country is a prime example of the areas I mentioned in a prior message that will more slowly emerge from third density's suppression of spiritual awareness. The last steps in the world transformation process that began over sixty years ago will be the reforms in countries where the peoples have long been oppressed. By and large, those souls chose their current life conditions to achieve the balance that winds up their third density experiencing; when conditions exceed pre-birth agreement choices, divine grace permits the ending of physical lifetimes and the completion in Nirvana of the souls' selected but unfinished karmic lessons and evolvement into fourth density.

A reader who has experienced heightened illumination by using peyote, marijuana and psychodelic drugs asked if those also are hindrances to spiritual growth like regular usage of pharmaceuticals or "heavy" drugs such as cocaine. I have to say that hallucinogenic natural substances don't deter spiritual awareness as do the chemicals in legally or illegally manufactured drugs-and these include psychedelic drugs-which destroy brain cells, muffle bodies' self-healing mechanisms, and form a barrier between the soul and the consciousness. With the power of will and prayer, addiction to those kinds of drugs can be ended and the damage repaired. But as for the comparatively harmless natural substances, they produce only fleeting illumination, and that may be distortion rather than an illuminating experience, whereas spiritual growth comes only from absorbing the power of light energy and is everlasting—now that is the ultimate "high"!

It is what you are feeling yourselves and sensing in others; it's what is motivating soul-searching and sustaining light workers; it is the force that is propelling Earth's ascension into the higher densities and manifesting the Golden Age!

And last: Yes, the year 2012 is "a shift into a new dimension" and "the Age of Aquarius," but the fullness of what that calendar year encompasses is immeasurably more profound than those words or that label name can convey. No, there will be no crime in fourth density, and no, I cannot give an exact number between 1 and 1000 to indicate Earth's ascension progress. I hope those inquirers and any others who may be pondering what 2012 holds will read "2012 Essay". I say this because it is the envisioning of your world as it will be that is creating it!

Never are you alone in your quest for understanding, your journey of self-discovery as part of God. Never are you alone in serving the light, nor in the "daily grind" as you deal with respective responsibilities. Why floods could bring America to its knees


A catastrophe for Iowa farmers will not be just a catastrophe for Midwestern Americans. In the Iowa floods, we’ll see more evidence of how the problems of weird weather (climate change) combine and ramify the problems associated with Peak Oil. In this particular case they lead to an inflection point sometime around the 2008 harvest season, which will also be our time of political harvest.

These are not your daddy’s or granddaddy’s floods. These are 500-year floods, events not seen before non-Indian people started living out on that stretch of the North American prairie. The vast majority of homeowners in Eastern Iowa did not have flood insurance because the likelihood of being affected above the 500-year-line was so miniscule — their insurance agents actually advised them against getting it.

The personal ruin out there will be comprehensive and profound, a wet version of the 1930s Dust Bowl, with families facing total loss and perhaps migrating elsewhere in the nation because they have no home to go back to.

Iowa in 2008 will be an even slower-motion disaster than Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Beyond the troubles of 25,000 people who have lost all their material possessions is a world whose grain reserves stand at record lows. The crop losses in Iowa will aggravate what is already a pretty dire situation. So far, the US public has experienced the world grain situation mainly in higher supermarket prices.

Cheap corn is behind the magic of the American processed food industry — all those pizza pockets and juicy-juice boxes that frantic Americans resort to because they have no time between two jobs and family-chauffeur duties to actually cook (note: reheating is not cooking).

Behind that magic is an agribusiness model of farming cranked up on the steroids of cheap oil and cheap natural-gas-based fertiliser. Both of these 'inputs' have recently entered the realm of the non-cheap. Oil-and-gas-based farming had already reached a crisis stage before the flood of Iowa. Diesel fuel is a dollar-a-gallon higher than gasoline. Natural gas prices have doubled over the past year, sending fertiliser prices way up. American farmers are poorly positioned to reform their practices. All that cheap fossil fuel masks a tremendous decay of skill in husbandry. The farming of the decades ahead will be a lot more complicated than just buying X amount of 'inputs' (on credit) to be dumped on a sterile soil growth medium and spread around with giant diesel-powered machines.

Like a lot of other activities in American life these days, agribusiness is unreformable along its current lines. It will take a convulsion to change it, and in that convulsion it will be dragged kicking-and-screaming into a new reality. As that occurs, the US public will have to contend with more than just higher taco chip prices. We’re heading into the Vale of Malthus — Thomas Robert Malthus, the British economist-philosopher who introduced the notion that eventually world population would overtake world food production capacity. Malthus has been scorned and ridiculed in recent decades, as fossil fuel-cranked farming allowed the global population to go vertical. Techno-triumphalist observers who should have known better attributed this to the “green revolution” of bio-engineering. Malthus is back now, along with his outriders: famine, pestilence, and war.

We’re headed, it seems, toward a fall 'crunch time', and that crunching sound will not be of cheese doodles and taco chips consumed on the sofas of America. I think we’re heading into a season of hoarding. As the presidential campaign moves into its final round, Americans may be hard up for both food and gasoline. On the oil scene, the next event on the horizon is not just higher prices but shortages. Chances are they will occur first in the Southeast states because oil exports from Mexico and Venezuela feeding the Gulf of Mexico refineries are down more than 30% +over 2007.

Perhaps more ominous is the discontent on the trucking scene. Truckers are going broke in droves, unable to carry on their business while getting paid $2,000 for loads that cost them $3,000 to deliver. In Europe last week, enraged truckers paralysed the food distribution networks of Spain and Portugal. The passivity of US truckers so far has been a striking feature of the general zombification of American life. They might continue to just crawl off one-by-one and die. But it’s also possible that, at some point, they’ll mount a Night of the Living Dead offensive and take their vengeance out on 'the system' that has brought them to ruin. America has only about a three-day supply of food in any of its supermarkets.

The yet-more-ominous thing here is that shortages of food and oil are two fiascos that are pretty clearly predictable for the second half of the year. That’s bad enough without figuring in the 'unknowns' that could kick up American hardship a few more notches. The hurricane season just got underway — obscured for the moment by the bigger weather story in Iowa. The fate of the banks is a train wreck still waiting to happen. As it occurs — also heading into the high political and hurricane seasons — we could find ourselves not only a nation wet, hungry, and out-of-gas, but also completely broke. I’m just sorry that Tim Russert will not be here to talk us through it all.




Saving Zimbabwe

On June 27, Robert Mugabe stole an election. He did so in plain view of journalists, aid workers, diplomats and heads of state. His brutality before the vote resulted in the deaths of about 100 Zimbabweans, the detention of some 2,000, injury to 10,000 and the displacement of more than 200,000. His regime systematically burned down homes and tortured people who had the nerve to suggest they might choose a new President of Zimbabwe. Under Mugabe, life expectancy has dropped to 36 years.

The ruthlessness and savagery of Mugabe have given rise to two basic reactions in Africa and around the world: fruitless hand-wringing by committed multilateralists who want to solve the problem through "constructive engagement," and consequence-blind militarism by zealous moralists who call for regime change by force. Neither approach offers realistic hope for the people of Zimbabwe. Ending the Mugabe nightmare is still possible, but it will require a more radical diplomatic strategy than the world has tried so far.

The positions of both the multilateralists and the moralists start from flawed assumptions. The multilateralist camp claims to be disappointed that South African President Thabo Mbeki has failed to mediate a resolution to the crisis. But Mbeki is not a mediator; he is an ally to a dictator. And yet Western countries--aware that their criticisms of human rights abuses in the developing world have a neoimperialist ring to them--don't call out Mbeki on his partisanship. Instead, they confine their ritual condemnations to Mugabe, who cares more about staying in power than anybody else cares about removing him.

The moralists, for their part, have begun demanding the military overthrow of Mugabe. Many of them are neoconservatives motivated largely by the desire to ridicule multilateralism and resuscitate the so-called Bush Doctrine. Such voices conveniently forget that the Bush Doctrine has never actually been tried in practice. The war in Iraq was fought over alleged weapons of mass destruction, a contrived link to 9/11, oil, a father's unfinished legacy--but not as a humanitarian intervention.

The bigger problem with those who call for forcible regime change in Zimbabwe is not their faulty history; it is their utter indifference to consequences. Even if one could find a country prepared to invade Zimbabwe, such a war would probably cause Mugabe's bloodstained security forces (estimated to number 100,000) to butcher unarmed opposition politicians and their defenseless supporters and cause several million to flee to neighboring countries. It would also exacerbate the suspicions between countries in the north and those in the south, making it even more likely that developing countries (which account for the majority of U.N. member states) will dig in their heels in support of human rights abusers in Zimbabwe and beyond.

So what can be done? To start, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon should appoint his predecessor, Kofi Annan, fresh from brokering a power-sharing deal for Kenya, as the U.N.'s envoy to Zimbabwe. One by one, those African and Western leaders who claim to be disgusted with Mugabe should announce that they bilaterally recognize the validity of the March 29 first-round election results, which showed the opposition winning 48% to 43%, though the margin was almost surely larger. The countries which do would make up the new "March 29 bloc" within the U.N. and would declare Morgan Tsvangirai the new President of Zimbabwe. They would then announce that Mugabe and the 130 leading cronies who have already been sanctioned by the West will not be permitted entry to their airports.

Tsvangirai and his senior aides should do as South Africa's African National Congress did throughout the 1960s and '70s: set up a government-in-exile and appoint ambassadors abroad--including to the U.N. That ambassador should be given forums for rebutting the ludicrous claims of the Zimbabwean and South African regimes.

If "the U.N." is disaggregated into its component parts, Mugabe's friends will be exposed. "June 27" countries will be those who favor electoral theft, while "March 29" countries will be those who believe that the Zimbabweans aren't the only ones who should stand up and be counted. This can be a recipe for gridlock in international institutions--but the gridlock won't get broken by lamenting its existence. It will get broken when the heads of state who back Mugabe are forced out into the open and when constructive engagement of the new President of Zimbabwe begins.

A Faith in Simple Dreams

When I was a child, I lived overseas for a time with my mother. And one of my earliest memories is of her reading to me the first lines of the Declaration of Independence, explaining how its ideas applied to every American, black and white and brown alike. She taught me that those words, and the words of the United States Constitution, protected us from the brutal injustices we witnessed other people suffer during those years abroad.

I've been reminded of this recently as I've followed the brutal injustice surrounding Zimbabwe's so-called elections. For weeks, the opposition party and its supporters have been silently hunted, tortured and killed. They have been dragged from their homes in the middle of the night and strangled while their children watched. The wife of a newly elected mayor was so badly beaten that her own brother only recognized her by the skirt she wore on the day she was killed. Even voters suspected of disloyalty to the President have been herded together and thrashed for hours, all for the simple crime of casting their ballot.

We are a nation of strong and varied convictions and beliefs. We argue and debate our differences vigorously and often. But when all is said and done, we still come together as one people and pledge our allegiance not just to a place on a map or a certain leader but to the words my mother read to me years ago: "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

That is the true genius of America — a faith in simple dreams, an insistence on small miracles. It's the idea that we can tuck in our children at night and know that they are fed and clothed and safe from harm; that we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door; that we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe; that we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution; and that our votes will be counted.

For me, it is the love and defense of these ideals that constitutes the true meaning of patriotism. They are ideals that do not belong to any particular party or group of people but call each of us to service and sacrifice for the sake of our common good.

I write this knowing that if previous generations had not taken up this call, I would not be where I am today. As a young man of mixed race, without a firm anchor in any community, without even a father's steadying hand, this essential American ideal — that our destinies are not written before we are born — has defined my life. And it is the source of my profound love for this country: because with a mother from Kansas and a father from Kenya, I know that stories like mine could only happen in America.

To win this election, Mr. Obama shows himself ready to abandon or shade some of his strongest commitments. For example, he decided to forgo public financing for his campaign and the ceiling on spending that went along with it. Thus, he prepares to vote in the Senate for a proposed law that justifies the wiretaps authorized by Mr. Bush. He has amended his position on troop presence in Iraq and given assurances to pro-Israel organizations. His Republican adversary, John McCain, has also evolved in order to please a more conservative electorate. That's the law of the genus and one should not exaggerate the importance of these tactical gestures. But neither should one dream that politics ceases to be politics nor that one can win an election, in the United States or elsewhere, without being a realistic politician.

Wildlife Extinction Rates ‘Seriously Underestimated’

Endangered species may become extinct 100 times faster than previously thought, scientists warned today, in a bleak re-assessment of the threat to global biodiversity.

Writing in the journal Nature, leading ecologists claim that methods used to predict when species will die out are seriously flawed, and dramatically underestimate the speed at which some plants and animals will be wiped out.

The findings suggest that animals such as the western gorilla, the Sumatran tiger and the Malayan sun bear, the smallest of the bear family, may become extinct much sooner than conservationists feared.

Ecologists Brett Melbourne at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Alan Hastings at the University of California, Davis, said conservation organisations should use updated extinction models to urgently re-evaluate the risks to wildlife.

“Some species could have months instead of years left, while other species that haven’t even been identified as under threat yet should be listed as endangered,” said Melbourne.

The warning has particular implications for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, which compiles an annual “red list” of endangered species. Last year, the list upgraded western gorillas to critically endangered, after populations of a subspecies were found to be decimated by Ebola virus and commercial trade in bush meat. The Yangtze river dolphin was listed as critically endangered, but is possibly already extinct.

The researchers analysed mathematical models used to predict extinction risks and found that while they included some factors that are crucial to predicting a species’ survival, they overlooked others. For example, models took into account that some animals might die from rare accidents, such as falling out of a tree. They also included chance environmental threats, such as sudden heatwaves or rain storms that could kill animals off.

But Melbourne and Hastings highlighted two other factors that extinction models fail to include, the first being the proportion of males to females in a population, the second the difference in reproductive success between individuals in the group. When they factored these into risk assessments for species, they found the danger of them becoming extinct rose substantially.

“The older models could be severely overestimating the time to extinction. Some species could go extinct 100 times sooner than we expect,” Melbourne said.


More than 16,000 species worldwide are currently threatened with extinction, according to a 2007 report from the IUCN. One in four mammal species, one in eight bird species and one in three amphibian species are on the organisation’s red list. An updated list is due to be published in October.

Next week, the IUCN is expected to highlight the dire state of the world’s corals after surveying the condition of more than 1,000 species around the world.

'We Are Running Out of Environment'

Population expert Paul Ehrlich says we must see the links in our planet's ills

In 1968, Stanford University biologist Paul Ehrlich published The Population Bomb, a synthesis of scientific research and personal observations that offered a disturbing account of a world with too many people and too little food. The book was a national bestseller. Now 40 years later, Ehrlich, still at Stanford, and his wife, Anne, have come out with a new book, The Dominant Animal, in which they seek to explain how man's rapid rise to dominance has spawned a series of interlinked woes: soaring energy demand, agriculture crises, and, above all, environmental degradation. No longer, the Ehrlichs argue, can these issues be viewed as independent of one another, nor will a single response suffice as a remedy. U.S. News recently spoke with Paul Ehrlich. Excerpts:

Energy, food, and environment problems seem increasingly entangled. We can't talk about one without talking about the others. Where do we start?

We've got to dramatically revise the way people think about the world—and about our cultures. You can get all the way through Stanford University and still think your food comes from supermarkets. For example, people don't understand the involvement of the transport system in agriculture, or the oil connection. Obviously, there are huge problems with what's happening to people who live on two bucks a day and can't afford food, but agriculture is also our single most important activity and generates our biggest environmental threats. We can't go back to hunting and gathering. We've got to tackle the population issue, so ever more mouths don't need to be fed. There is also a consumption problem. I just spent four weeks in Africa, and there and all over the world people want to eat the way we do, which of course means more beef and pork and much more production to feed animals.

The so-called new consumers in Asia have been cited as a big factor in the fuel and food crises today. Who are they?

People who have a little more money and education have, in China and India particularly, developed very rapidly the same consumptive attitudes as the average American and European. That's not necessarily bad: Who can deny them wanting the stuff we have when we haven't shown the slightest interest in reducing our own impact on the environment? In 1972, I cowrote an op-ed called "What if all the Chinese had wheels?" At that time, there were 500 million Chinese, and it looked like one day they might want cars. Now, we have 1.3 billion Chinese, and we know damn well they want cars; they're buying them and manufacturing them.

Some estimates show the world population growing to about 9 billion people by 2050. Can the planet sustain that?

Probably not without disaster. If humanity put the effort in, we could end up with fewer people then. We have already seen a trend toward smaller families and actual shrinkage of population in Europe. It's not written that everybody has to have huge families. But in Africa, where the people are poor and have four, five, six kids, it will be tough. Even the optimistic scenario of population falling to 7.5 billion in 2100 takes us through roughly a doubling of energy use, and energy use is the best single measure we have of damage we do to our life-support systems. We don't have a clue if we can hold society together through that.

What if these predictions are off—and population growth continues?

Population growth will end sooner or later. The big question is: Will it end by a huge die-off, or will it end because low birth rates spread in Europe, Japan, and a few other places to the rest of the world? The actual limits depend on consumption patterns and technologies available and how environmentally benign they are, and what kind of lifestyle people want to live. We can't all go back to being subsistence farmers. We must make decisions about technologies and lifestyle. If you're rich, you can by a Van Gogh or you can buy a private jet. Obviously, one of those consumption decisions has a very different impact on the environment than the other.

But how do you control consumption?

There are no consumption condoms. This problem is enormously complex. What I am convinced of is that it is human behavior we have to change. The discussion of key issues is limited to a tiny portion of a population. We need to set up a system to keep these issues on the front burner...They are all long-term issues. The politicians, of course, have very little interest in them because solutions don't give votes for the next election.

You say that our energy supply is adequate. So what's the problem?

We're not running out of fossil fuels—we're running out of environment. We could go a long time if we could just burn up fossil fuels and dump the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We'd be in good shape at least for long enough to carefully consider our future. But when you see what's happening with the climate, you realize we can't do that. One of my colleagues went to Norway recently. She said it was horrendous to see global warming actually in action. Almost all the lakes they used to ice skate across in summer are gone. Everything is just melted. We don't have the time to continue what we're doing now and hope to change later.

The same holds for the food supply?

Unless we are extremely lucky, climate change will continuously alter the distribution of precipitation all over the planet. It's not that we're just going to deal the cards once and some farms are going to be better off and others worse off. Changes in water management will be required over centuries, for instance, switching from rain-fed to irrigation and maybe back. It's going to be extraordinarily expensive and disruptive, especially when we have a problem of how to feed ever more people.

Crude oil is at record prices. What's the first immediate step on energy?

You really need an overall energy policy. We have been reducing our energy research and development budget, not increasing it. The quickest energy solution is efficiency. Next is to stop population growth. If we'd stopped U.S. population growth in 1945 at half today's size, guess how much less fuel we would need to buy from the Middle East. Energy policy is a vast area we are not putting the right kind of thought into. The whole launch into biofuels was done without any ecological analysis of what the actual climate gains and losses would be or what the environmental impact would be.

Can biofuels even be part of a real solution?

It's not necessarily an insane idea. What was insane was not to very carefully look at it and get some more lead time. There may be some place in a sensible world for use of biofuels. It's not crystal clear. You hear, well, we'll just do X and Y in wasteland. I work in a laboratory in a beautiful mountain valley in Colorado. All the land is classified as wasteland and could be used for biofuel production, which would just be destroying beauty and biodiversity. It's important to understand that when biodiversity is gone, we're gone, too.

Brazil has a thriving biofuels industry based on converting sugar cane to fuel.

They are also cutting down big chunks of the Amazon. We don't know how much of the Amazon you can cut down before the whole thing goes, and what the effect on global climate will be. Besides the loss of biodiversity, the resulting climate change could basically destroy us, and we're probably not going to know in the near future until we've run the experiment and find out.

Recently there's been chatter about revisiting nuclear power.

Nuclear power, whether you are in favor of it or against it, is not a silver bullet. It is another very complex issue. There may be a place in our energy mix for nuclear power. But it's not going to solve this complex of problems.

What else might be in that mix?

We could easily increase efficiency on energy use in buildings and transportation. Let's build only coal-fired power plants that can sequester carbon dioxide, or shift away from coal to natural gas and then various solar technologies. There are lots of things we can do; no single one of them is going to solve the problem. You need action at the local level, at the state level, and the federal level, and the international level.

At the federal level, there is gridlock. How can we speed up progress?

Elect smart, informed people. I get the impression that Congress thinks if it promotes wind power, in two years we could be getting 75 percent of our energy from wind. Actually, we'd be lucky to be getting 10 percent in 30 years. There is a huge time delay in deploying new energy technologies. The only way to speed that up is basically to go to a WWII-type commitment. The Manhattan Project took three or four years, but we put gigantic amounts of effort into it. We need a Manhattan Project on energy and the environment, but we don't yet even know what direction to go.

The presidential campaign, so far, hasn't offered much guidance.

Essentially none of this is in the campaign. Sure, there are occasional statements on candidates' websites about climate. But what my colleagues and I are dealing with all the time and are scared witless about are not presidential campaign issues. It's sort of a wonderland. Whatever you think about gay rights and what starlet isn't wearing her panties today, those are not critical issues for most of our society.

The international community is starting work on replacing the Kyoto Protocol, which was intended to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. never ratified it, and other countries haven't upheld their pledges. Is there any reason to be optimistic this time?

If there is going to be any real success in the international talks, it is going to have to come from the world's publics speaking up. It is beginning to dawn on them that there could be huge problems in the future. In California, we've had a record dry spring. When I was in Australia two years ago, there was no agriculture in New South Wales. I saw huge road trains full of sheep going to the abattoirs to be slaughtered because they didn't have anything left to graze on. There were no crops growing. Climate change is a symptom of a systemic failure to understand that humanity is wrecking its environment.

This is an interesting article about cell phone antennas, which describes the problems affecting citizens of the United States of America. How a country, which claims to be the guardian of democracy in the world, can allow such un-democratic laws against its citizens, is appalling.

COLUMN: The antennas are coming

Marblehead - There’s something the government, the telecommunication industry and the corporate media don't want you to know: Invisible things can hurt you.

The invisible things in question are low-level electromagnetic waves emitted by cell phones and cell-phone towers. Three neurosurgeons appearing on Larry King confessed that the danger is such that they never put their cell phones up to their heads, but at least cell-phone use is a matter of choice. The antennas going up at the Jewish Community Center and on the Village Street water tower are another matter. Neighbors, some of whose property line is only 2 feet away, will be involuntarily affected by low-level radiation 24 hours a day. The Veterans Middle School is within a 750-foot radius of the water tower, where six more antennas will soon join those already there. Kids at Hillel and the JCC are the new JCC single antenna’s nearest neighbors.

Why don’t more people know that low-level, non-heating electromagnetic waves can adversely affect people’s health and well-being? One reason is that citizens are prohibited by the Telecommunications Act of 1996 from speaking at public meetings about health effects when cell-phone antennas are proposed for their towns, a law written by lobbyists designed to keep information about health effects from the public. Another is the Wireless Communications and Public Safety Law of 1999, which gave cell phone companies total immunity from product liability. Unlike cigarettes, you will not read in your newspaper about any high-profile lawsuits claiming cell-phone use causes brain tumors or cancer. By law, there can be no lawsuits.

A third reason we hear so little about health effects is that following the passage of the Telecommunications Act, the government stopped funding independent research on health effects from cell-phone radiation. University studies in progress in the U.S. were shut down, and this highly profitable industry became the only one investigating itself. The corporate press refrains from reporting the bad news uncovered by foreign research.

I know that last point is true from personal experience. When I wrote a weekly column for the Boston Globe, I pointed out that the government of Great Britain was warning parents against giving cell phones to children because their brains are more vulnerable to harm due to thinner skulls and rapidly growing grey matter. The column was never printed; it was deemed outside my “area of expertise.”

“I don’t even have an area of expertise,” I told my editor. “How can I be outside it?”
“Linda,” he said, as if I were a child. “Look at the advertising.”

I looked. And saw page after page of advertising for cell phones, especially family cell-phone plans.

There’s total agreement in the scientific community that exposure to low-intensity radio frequency waves in the microwave portion of the electromagnetic spectrum causes biological changes in living things. Research in Finland, the UK, France, Australia and Japan indicates that those cellular changes can lead to short-term physical ailments such as chronic fatigue syndrome, insomnia, headaches and memory disturbance, as well as long-term weakening of the immune system and the protective blood-brain barrier, eventually leading to brain tumors and cancer. The American Cancer Society and other groups dependant on corporate funding are waiting for definitive proof that will never come. With so many poisons in our environment (each one of us has traces of hundreds of toxins in our blood stream), science will never be able to pinpoint exactly which one has finally caused our illness.

Why is this invisible threat an issue in town now? For a total fee of $2,000 a month, the Water Board solicited telecommunications companies to look into siting new antennas in town. The Board of Selectmen signed a lease with MetroPCS in January, then waited four months to inform neighbors on Village Street, as required by law, that new antennas would be going up. Six weeks later, the Planning Board approved a special permit, encouraging other companies to follow suit. This scenario - monetary rewards, neighbors taken by surprise, federal limits on local authority, an uninformed citizenry and compliant boards - plays out in town after town across the United States, orchestrated by highly paid corporate strategists. Oh, and agreements once reached cannot be rescinded.

Town Planner Rebecca Curran and a group of volunteer citizens will soon be working on a new by-law to regulate the further proliferation of antennas in Marblehead, which hopefully can be presented at next year’s Town Meeting. The principle of prudent avoidance, which has led New Zealand and Scotland to prohibit antennas on school grounds, should lead us to limit the number of antennas situated here. We already have sufficient coverage for town-wide cell-phone use.

We need not add more threats to our environment if we are half as determined to protect our health as the telecommunications industry is to keep us believing that we needn’t bother our pretty little heads about invisible things.
