There is ALWAYS Hope Series #2: A Higher Standard of Leadership

Hello everysoul!

For several weeks, I've been pondering options and assessing what's already out there in term of how we can mobilize/expand all the goodwill already manifested through the more than ONE MILLION existing NGOs (to name just that aspect) worldwide - please watch this short video (much more on this in the SPECIAL MOTIVATIONAL FEATURE below) to get a sense of what I'm referring to here - and millions and millions of volunteers doing good things around the world.

The key thought guiding me in this review of what can be done to help co-manifest a New Earth is how do we catalyze the existing groundswell of change innerly, locally and globally?

As you'll see in this compilation loaded with powerful, exciting, positive material, I'm continuing my exploration of the solutions at hand and of all the wonderful initiatives already existing. But I'm also considering to initiate a whole new project, something that would make it possible to tap the vast reservoir of wisdom, creativity, imagination and experience encompassed by the 4600+ people receiving this compilation - sent to the Earth Rainbow Network list of subscribers (both the main list and another separate list), but also to the Planetary Awakening Network list and the Global Meditation Focus list.

The reasons why I feel this is necessary at this point are the following...

Our planet is going through an unprecedented time of crisis with the potential to affect every aspect of our lives. We may not be all directed affected yet by this crisis, but without considerable changes, we shall soon be all most directly touched by the effects of this crisis. Now, such a situation is also a golden opportunity that can be seized in a bold, visionary and inspired way to help steer our civilization onto not only a much more sustainable path but, most importantly, to set the stage for the dimensional shift that, according to many sources and our own spiritual insights (when one is open to receive them), is currently unfolding.

It is not when everything runs smoothly—at least from a first-world perspective—that most people are willing to consider swift, across-the-board changes. But when things are getting in an ever worsening state of dysfunction as we see now in the economic sphere, when we realize that our unsustainable lifestyle and disregard for the Web of Life are leading us right over the edge, and when we consider the increasingly intolerable level of human suffering, especially in Africa, that billions of members of our global family must endure, then the time is right and the minds are more open to the kind of sweeping changes that are required to co-create a New Earth of shared abundance, joy and love for all.

Most everyone around the world is sensing that a new direction must be taken and the recent election of Barack Obama in the U.S. is a clear sign that more and more people are ready to support a massive change of course. Now obviously, despite the high hopes his election has aroused, the fact is the leadership he and other new visionary leaders can offer is dependent upon the participation, support and involvement of a vast number of agents of change who, each in their respective field of expertize and interest, are those who will actually conceive, implement and successfully carry those changes—or are already doing so!

So here is what I'd like to co-create with you all, and here is the shape it would take...

If enough people receiving this—directly or as a forward—respond positively to this idea, I will create a wiki website - through - with the goal of offering anyone interested a forum where to express their visionary contribution as to how we may co-manifest a New Era of Love and Light on Earth. Here is how it would work. Anyone interested would be able sign on and post directly material that would help generally answer the following 3 questions:

1. What is your vision of the ideal future for our world? 2. How do we get there? 3. What will you do to help co-manifest it?

Since each contributor will have a personal interest in some aspects of what the future can be, the wiki website would feature several areas of interest and people would pick the category that best fit their own approach and field of interest—or propose to create a new one if none is relevant—and post their material there. Everyone would be required by the template provided to put first a brief synopsis of what their entry is all about, followed by a Contents section, and then by the full development of their idea, on the same model as any (passing your mouse over personal blog, community and especially group projects and checking what is explained on this at I think you will come to the conclusion that this free service may indeed be the best place to establish this kind of project.

But there is more! Each contributor, and anyone else registering, would be invited to rate - from 1 to 5 - each contribution proposed. After a while, those with the best ratings—each person will be able to vote only once!—would be prominently featured on the site homepage and could form the basis of the main global visions, offering possible pathways towards co-creating a New Earth, that would then be promoted through various means, such as a free newsletter, a book, a movie documentary, and so on, and implemented over time, the whole thing eventually snowballing as more and more people will learn about how they can contribute to co-create the changes that will ultimately make a new world possible.

It is clear to me also that this is not just about fixing the material problems we face today, because they all have their roots in our understanding—or lack thereof— of who we are, of our true potential and of the Higher Purpose of Life in this universe. As more and more people are awakening to these inner realities, and heal within themselves the rift between their past obsolete sense of separation and imperfection and their new growing sense of Oneness with All That Is and innate perfection, the true outward changes will thus be made possible and the world will be made anew. This is to me in part what this "dimensional shift" is all about. As we discover our true universal nature, adjust our self-perception and open our heart to the sacred Love resonating from the very nature of our Being, we ascend vibrationally wise into a new dimension of manifestation, and amazing "miracles" then become possible and natural.

So this whole project is also about helping to foster the already growing sense of Oneness that millions of people are experiencing right now. And the question that also needs to be answered—by those who are more interested in this deeper aspect as it relates to this global initiative—is...

How can we foster a greater spiritual awakening and more individual empowerment towards an ever greater sense of Oneness with All That Is?

I feel you have enough information with these thoughts to sense if this is something you feel called upon to support and contribute to. I will look forward in the next couple weeks to hear from those of you who resonate with this proposal and see if there is indeed enough momentum towards making this happen. Since I want this project to be transparent, self-participatory and open to all, I would ask you to please post your comments and commitment to participate at this Pathways to a New Earth guestbook which I've just created for this purpose. This way, everyone interested will be able to review the feedbacks to this proposal as they will appear there and see for themselves the level of interest it generates.

Finally, as you will see in this compilation, I've gathered lots of material relevant in some ways to this proposal, in the sense that it offers various perspectives both on how we can co-create a New Earth and on how much is already being done towards enabling the needed changes towards this goal.

Love, Light and blessings to all of you!

"Visionary leadership is educative, rather than directive. It inspires responsibility rather than creating dependence. Realizing that people already have the potential wisdom and creativity within them, visionary leaders draw it out, helping people develop their skills and sense of self-confidence. As the ancient Chinese sage Lao Tzu said, "Leadership is best when the people say, 'We have done this ourselves!'"

- Corinne McLaughlin and Gordon Davidson -- Taken from The New Leadership: A Synthesis of Hierarchy and Democracy

" Although photographs and stories have shown worldwide elation about the United States president-elect, those can only begin to indicate what we saw. If you can imagine Earth revolving from shimmering golden light into blinding brilliance, you will have a faint glimpse of what we observed during the hours election updates traveled around the globe. The radiance is the heart-to-heart connection between Barack Obama and all who are jubilant about his winning the election. Although the density around the planet has been lightening for many years, most of the populace do not yet remember what their souls know, the universal law of "like attracts like" and the heart is the seat of the soul. Those who sense Obama's light do so because they are energetically aligned with his soul's make-up, and this connection rises into consciousness not only as joy, but a strong feeling that Obama's win is a victory for all peoples and for Earth herself. It IS, and that is why we greeted you with JOY TO THE WORLD! (...) So, what is considered in your world to be a recent political event had its beginnings long ago in your counting of time and is far, FAR more than Obama's imminent presidency! Think of the innumerable times "historic" has been used to describe this, and rightly so! However, most people have no idea how truly historic it is—they have not yet reached their soul's knowledge that includes what I just explained or what I and other sources of messages have told you through our receivers: This era on Earth is unique, what is happening is unprecedented in the universe."

- Matthew - Taken from his November 21 message which covers "Significance of Obama's election; planning of Earth's Golden Age; global economic situation; accelerated manifesting; Bush, Illuminati roles, results and consequences."

"It has been said by many that we cannot save this planet unless there’s widespread spiritual or religious awakening. When I’ve heard that in the past I have sort of buckled and sort of stiffened - not because I didn’t think it’d be a good idea, but because I thought, well, yeah, but we have work to do. Things are going so fast. We can’t depend on such a thing arising. But in my research for the book, I have come to think about this in a different way. And my question to you is, would we recognize a spiritual awakening in this world if we saw one? Or let me put out another question to you, what if an awakening was already deeply in place and we don’t see it? In other words, it’s here."

- Paul Hawken -- Taken from The Golden Rule: Restoring the Earth by Restoring Human Dignity

"There have been times of relative peace and prosperity when nothing seemed impossible. Consider the years of post-World War II, when the world seemed to awaken from a nightmare to discover life anew. Then our dreams were golden, when no dreams were too large, and life was fresh and hopeful for millions of people all over the planet. Surprisingly, those countries which had suffered some of the greatest losses were among the first ones to rebuild. Their tragic memories were changed from sorrow to renewed vigor, a zest for living, and ultimately the rebirth of civilizations that had been destroyed by war. This rebirth sought a new world full of opportunity and fulfilled dreams, where everyone had a chance to build a life of hope for their family. These were not idle dreams, but were instead realities that were achieved by millions of families throughout the world. We are once again poised at such a crossroads. Will we, as citizens of the world, make a decision to seize this opportunity to fulfill our destiny and our dreams, or will we be satisfied to live in the shadow of former greatness, under a cloud of disillusionment and shattered hopes? How can we begin to realize these hopes and make them our realities? We need to unite globally with others who share our vision of an achievable, prosperous and fulfilling life for all of our citizens."

- Mark Overt Skilbred -- Excerpted from a comment he posted HERE

"Be yourself completely. Love every part as good. Only then can you know peace and stand where Masters stood. Every place is holy. We live and move in God and every one is worthy to walk as Jesus trod. Everyone, yes, every one is whole — yet incomplete. Oh, such contradiction we are forced to meet. We are God's, yet Human; but Human is Divine. Experience for the knowledge: I'm yours, and you are mine. One! Yet separated—Together: our best choice! Unity or disharmony? Can you hear the inner voice?"

- Ron Van Dyke -- Taken from PARADOX, THE PRELUDE TO PEACE - Incidentally, Ron asked me "Do you really believe Matthew's and so many other's belief in Obama? For me, he is quite an enigma, to say the least. While I have hope, I also see his choices of advisers, none of which inspire confidence for me so far. How do you feel about him?" and my reply was: "I was at first like you somewhat puzzled with some of his choices, especially in view of the criticism they provoked in some quarters. What I read into this is, on the one hand, that being aware of his lack of experience on the peculiar ways of Washington, he has decided to surround himself with experienced people on his economic team who know how to best work the political system. With the depth of the challenges he faces, he cannot afford to waste precious time on trying inexperienced hands and so he must go with a tested crew, those who were part of the best years of the Clinton years which brought a balanced budget and an era of prosperity for many—but obviously not all Americans. On the other hand, as I read yesterday in a comment pointing to the fact that many of the people he has selected, like Hillary, do not have direct relevant past experience in their new responsibilities, I believe this should allow him to be better able to control the policies and message they will be tasked with carrying on his behalf. In short, I believe he thinks strategically and acts wisely. There could be much more to say too regarding the short leash - metaphorically speaking - given to him by the Cabal people who vetted and enabled his political ascent. As many point out, no one can rise to be the President of the United States without having the backing of the hidden elite. If, as many surmise and hope, his personal background as someone who was born in poverty and who became who he is through his personal efforts as a community organizer helping the least favored people in Chicago, as well as his spiritual background as a highly advanced soul, showing through his charismatic presence that never fails to move people to tears and empower them with a wonderful can-do attitude, are good indications of what he can accomplish in his new role, then I feel we can trust he is playing his hand carefully and patiently as the excellent poker player he is, and that in due time, once he has firmed up his growing mastery of holding the reins of power, Barack Obama will show us his true mettle and shine the Light of true spiritual change he is there to catalyze — all of us contributing as we should to the nearly miraculous and swift changes that are to sweep the world into a New Era of Love and Peace in the next 4 years. Thanks for asking Ron." NOTE: More on this issue in Obama Defends Cabinet: The Change Will Come From Me -- Also I cannot recommend strongly enough that you read The Spiritual Dimensions of Obama's Leadership included in this compilation.

WiserEarth Video Trailer - Wow! WOW!! W-O-W !!! Truly Amazing organization
This video is an introduction to This video describes the largest social movement in the world and how WiserEarth serves that movement.

Paul Hawken, Blessed Unrest and WiserEarth (5 min 53 sec) MUST WATCH!
See Paul Hawken's speech at the 2006 Bioneers conference. NOTE: There are currently 110287 organizations in WiserEarth database! -- 18953 users are using it as well as 942 groups and this was launched barely 15 months ago!!! (better versions of this video at
WiserEarth . . . serves the people who are transforming the world. It is a community directory and networking forum that maps and connects non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses, governments, and individuals addressing the central issues of our day: climate change, poverty, the environment, peace, water, hunger, social justice, conservation, human rights and more. Content is created and edited by people like you. WiserEarth is an online community space for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and those that support their work: businesses, government agencies, funders, social entrepreneurs, students, organizers, academics, activists, scientists, and other concerned citizens of the world. WiserEarth provides the tools to help these 'communities of action' find each other, make connections, share resources, and build alliances. More specifically, WiserEarth... an international directory of more than 100,000 NGOs working toward a just and sustainable world. a place where communities of action can collaborate, share resources and grow their network using group creation and management tools. like Wikipedia, where any registered user can create and edit content. like FaceBook where you can find social networking tools allowing you to connect with others. ...enables funders to view a comprehensive landscape of organizations engaged in specific program activities. ...hosts geographic maps to help locate individual organizations, or any collection of organizations, from street to continent level. free of advertisements and commercial interests, and also free to use. Why do WE need WiserEarth? There are more than one million organizations and many millions of us around the world who are actively working toward ecological sustainability, economic justice, human rights protection, political accountability and peace -- issues that are systemically interconnected and intertwined At present, however, our effectiveness to prevent harm and institute positive change is undermined by our lack of collective awareness, duplication of efforts, and poor connectivity. What is missing is a map and directory of our network that includes the resources for communication and cooperation; in essence, an infrastructure through which to coordinate our efforts. WiserEarth provides this infrastructure and holds up a mirror for the social justice and environmental movement to see itself in its amazing myriad of colors. It provides a way for us to become better connected and to become more effective at working together. Read more

Blessed Unrest by Paul Hawken (Check the Praise for this book and watch the video)
How the Largest Movement In the World Came Into Being and Why No One saw it Coming -- A leading environmentalist and social activist's examination of the worldwide movement for social and environmental changePaul Hawken has spent over a decade researching organizations dedicated to restoring the environment and fostering social justice. From billion-dollar nonprofits to single-person dot.causes, these groups collectively comprise the largest movement on earth, a movement that has no name, leader, or location, and that has gone largely ignored by politicians and the media. Like nature itself, it is organizing from the bottom up, in every city, town, and culture. and is emerging to be an extraordinary and creative expression of people's needs worldwide. Blessed Unrest explores the diversity of the movement, its brilliant ideas, innovative strategies, and hidden history, which date back many centuries. A culmination of Hawken's many years of leadership in the environmental and social justice fields, it will inspire and delight any and all who despair of the world's fate, and its conclusions will surprise even those within the movement itself. Fundamentally, it is a description of humanity's collective genius, and the unstoppable movement to reimagine our relationship to the environment and one another. THE ORION CONSPIRACY - A fascinating movie with amazing revelations & pictures!!! MUST WATCH in HD!!
Available also through (PART 1 - English) and (PART 2)
Note from Jean: I found that by sheer "chance" last Sunday. I was greatly moved watching this 18 minute film. A real old-paradigm buster! Make sure to see the high def picture archives (through scrolling down the main page) of most pics shown in the movie and others (if you cannot watch the movie because you don't have high speed Internet access, the code to enter the archives is orion99 - but I greatly recommend you watch the movie first). I NEVER saw anything THAT clear, explicit and revealing about the amazing anti-gravity and other exotic US flying machines, the military space station orbiting Earth (equipped with guns!) the astounding findings of the astronauts on the moon, the UFO wrecks and much, much more!! This is exactly the kind of things Obama will be shown soon after he formally takes office. Save a copy of this on your computer (possible only if you have a registered copy of Quicktime). I truly believe most of what is shown are genuine pictures of actual facts. Obviously the director had access to never-before released top-secret pictures which indicates to me that some people want us to be appraised of what they know, most probably, in my view, to make impossible the hoaxed ET "false flag" attack of Earth scenario mentioned at the end of this film. So far, just a few thousand people seen this movie! (Check also "Interview With James Gilliland of ECETI" at the end of this compilation)

Critical Mass 101 (5 min 19 sec) THIS HAPPENS ONCE A MONTH IN 345 BIG CITIES WORLDWIDE!
I ride in the Critical Mass bike ride every month while I'm living in Chicago. I notice that many people are confused about what we are doing and why, so I decided to make this video. It's 5 minutes and 19 seconds. In the United States many people need cars to get around just because other alternatives are not available, sufficient, or feasible. With gas being a finite resource, and it also being a cause of war, I think it's so important to promote other alternatives: bikes, trains, walking, and building pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods and cities where we can walk to the stores or other businesses from our homes. Here are some other things to ponder when we are thinking of ways to build a better society:"Road accidents cost about $90 billion annually by killing over 40,000 Americans, about as many as diabetes or breast cancer, and injuring 5 million more. Globally, car accidents are the fifth- and will soon be the third-largest cause of death: They currently kill a half million people and injure 15 million more every year. If automobility were a disease, vast international resources would be brought to bear to cure it."--from "Natural Capitalism", by Paul Hawken, AmoryLovins, and Hunter Lovins.

Making Bay Area friendly for electric cars (November 21, 2008)
Bay Area environmental leaders are counting on a $1 billion investment to build the nation's first electric vehicle network - with service stations to recharge batteries and garages to swap depleted batteries for fresh ones - and finally make the gasoline-free cars practical. The Palo Alto-based company Better Place says its network of electric-vehicle charging stations will cover the Bay Area by 2012. In exchange for the investment from Better Place, the mayors of San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland announced plans Thursday to collectively create cohesive regulations for electric vehicles that will apply to cities and counties throughout the region. In San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom said the city will use tax breaks to promote sales of electric vehicles and encourage homes and businesses to make charging stations widely available. The city will also look at ways to speed up the permitting process to install charging outlets at homes and businesses."We're going to get serious about advancing our local climate action plans, about getting into the business of alternative transportation," Newsom said during a news conference at City Hall. "I don't believe halfway is good enough. I'm a guy driving a hybrid (vehicle) and I don't feel too good about that. For us to get to the next level, we need unprecedented regional collaboration."Better Place has built similar networks in Israel, Denmark and Australia, but the Bay Area infrastructure, which will allow drivers of electric vehicles to make long-distance trips without worrying about finding a place to charge or change a battery, will be the first of its kind in the United States. Shamballa Adventure - Fascinating inner spiritual journey proposed by">Michael Lightweaver
There is an ancient Tibetan legend... ...that says that somewhere, high in the far away mountains, there is a lost valley, cut off from the world. There the wisdom of the ages is conserved during turbulent times of planetary change which mark the end of one age and the beginning of the next. This paradise they call Shamballa or Shangri-la is a heart-centered Sanctuary of peace and harmony whose residents live in accord with the original teachings of dwelling in balance with the Earth, one another and the Creator. The Dalai Lama says this about Shamballa: “Nowadays, no one knows where Shambala is. Although it is said to exist, people cannot see it, or communicate with it in an ordinary way. Some people say it is located in another world, others that it is an ideal land, a place of the imagination. Some say it was a real place, which cannot now be found. Some believe there are openings into that world which may be accessed from this world. Whatever the truth of that, the search for Shamballa traditionally begins as an outer journey that becomes a journey of inner exploration and discovery.” CLIP Check also the summaries of all the books Michael suggests to buy and read over a one year period... at - as well as his other wonderful initiative: International Institute For Global Leadership IIGL is a tuition-free, internet-based education program which provides a curriculum in consciousness designed to prepare students to become personally empowered, consciously aware, high-integrity and heart-centered leaders in their communities and the world. The study program is open to participants of any age and from anywhere in the world.

Buy Nothing Day is more poignant this year than ever before (November 24 )
(...) Buy Nothing Day (is) an annual protest against consumerism and globalisation. Its organisers describe it thus:"Buy Nothing Day (Saturday November 29), is a simple idea, which challenges consumer culture by asking us to switch off from shopping for a day. It's a global stand off from consumerism - celebrated as a holiday by some and street party for others! Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!"The campaign aims to raise awareness of the inequity of 20% of people in the rich world consuming 80% of the world's resources - and the environmental destruction that stems from that consumption. And some have taken it much further than just one day out of the shops."The idea is to make people stop and think about what and how much they buy effects the environment and developing countries. Increasingly large companies use labour in developing countries to produce goods because its cheap and there aren't the systems to protect workers like there are in the west."Doing their bit to avert the "shopocalypse" next Friday with a free dance party in Union Square, New York, will be Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping (the US celebrates BND a day early). The faux televangelist and gospel choir are the brainchild of The Immediate Life - a New York based arts organisation. In the words of the rev's sermon "beatitudes of buylessness":"Blessed are the consumers, for you shall be free from living by products. Blessed are you who stumble out of branded main streets, for you shall find lovers not downloaded and oceans not rising."Amen to that. -- MUCH MORE through

Waste not, want not (October 30 2008)
Recyling is good, but precycling - cutting out packaging in the first place and buying only what you need - is better. Tanis Taylor tried it for a month --- Precycling is the practice of reducing waste by attempting to avoid accumulating it in the first place. Precyclers try to cut out as much packaging as possible and, to this end, they think ahead, shop locally, buy things loose and bring their own containers. The benefits are various; from saving money and creating less landfill to reducing food miles and conserving natural resources.

'World mandate' on climate action (26 November 2008)
BBC Environmental Awareness -- An opinion poll in 11 countries has produced what organisers term a "global mandate" for action on climate change. About half of the respondents wanted governments to play a major role in curbing emissions, but only a quarter said their leaders were doing enough. In developing countries, a majority of people were prepared to make "lifestyle changes" to reduce climate change. (...) The survey revealed that 43% of people questioned put climate change ahead of the world's financial instability as an issue of current concern, even though the surveys ran in the turbulent months of September and October."Despite the fact this research took place at a time when the global financial crisis was taking off, climate change was very much in the minds of the general public as an issue of concern," commented Francis Sullivan, HSBC's environmental advisor and a former director of conservation with the environment group WWF. Sizeable majorities in most of the developing countries polled - Brazil, India, Malaysia and Mexico - saying they were willing to make changes. In China it was just under half, as it was in the industrialised countries taking part - Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the UK and US. The findings broadly agree with a survey commissioned by the BBC last year, which found that two-thirds of people polled in 21 countries backed urgent action on climate change.

Dark chocolate is good for your heart. Eating one 100g bar a day can dramatically reduce your blood pressure - and it’s just as powerful as an anti-hypertensive drug. It even works at far lower levels. When scientists tested the health-giving effects of dark chocolate at just 6.3g a day, they found it reduced the risk of a fatal stroke by 8 per cent, and coronary artery disease by 5 per cent. But these health-giving qualities aren’t true for all chocolate - it’s only the brands that are milk-free, and low in sugar - often known as plain, pure, dark or cooking chocolate.

Dreaming the Future Can Create the Future

by Kenny Ausubel, for The Huffington Post

Dreaming the future can create the future. We stand at the threshold of a singular opportunity in the human experiment: To re-imagine how to live on Earth in ways that honor the web of life, each other and future generations. It's a revolution from the heart of nature -- and the human heart.

Then again, in the immortal words of Yogi Berra, "The future ain't what it used to be."

We also stand at the brink of worldwide ecological and civilizational collapse. We face a reckoning from the treacherous breach in our relationship with nature. We've been acting like a rock star trashing a hotel room, and it's the morning after. But this hotel is planet Earth. The guest rules are non-negotiable. If we don't change our ways fast, management may vote us off the island.

We're entering an age of nature. It calls for a new social contract of interdependence. Taking care of nature means taking care of people, and taking care of people means taking care of nature.

The ecological debt we've incurred is dire. We've precipitated climate change that's within one degree centigrade of the maximum temperature in the past million years. As NASA's chief climatologist James Hansen warns, "Beyond that, we will likely see changes that make Earth a different planet." Think Jurassic Park. Hansen and many other leading scientists say we have ten years at best to make a massive global shift, an extreme carbon makeover. It's show-time.

We're entering a drastic period of creative destruction. We've already begun to trigger what some ecologists call "regime shift," irreversible tipping points. Global warming is getting all the ink, but other intimately interdependent issues equal its magnitude: the mass extinction of 30-50% of Earth's biological and cultural diversity -- freshwater shortages that will lead to wars -- the universal poisoning of the biosphere -- and the greatest extremes of inequality in modern history, a world that's 77% poor.

We're going to be busier than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Periods of creative destruction also present transformative opportunities to make the world anew. These tectonic shocks are evolutionary exclamation points. They release vast amounts of energy and resources for renewal and reorganization. Novelty emerges, and small changes can have big influences. It's a time of creativity, innovation, freedom and transformation.

The grail is resilience -- strengthening the capacity of natural and human systems to rebound -- or to transform when the regime shifts. As Charles Darwin said, "It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change."

The driving force behind this unprecedented globalized collapse is financial. Hazel Henderson has characterized conventional economics as "a form of brain damage." We're experiencing its devastating effects right now. It rationalizes the insatiable predation of nature and people, while disappearing environmental and social costs from the balance sheet. It concentrates wealth and distributes poverty. It exalts greed and self-interest. It conflates free markets with democracy. It merges corporations and the state. Its foreign policy is empire. It has been a catastrophic success.

As Kevin Phillips has chronicled, every major empire over the past several hundred years has undergone a depressingly predictable cycle of collapse, usually within 10 to 20 years of its peak power.

The hallmarks are always the same:

- The financialization of the economy, moving from manufacturing to speculation;

- Very high levels of debt;

- Extreme economic inequality;

- And costly military overreaching.

The Dutch, Spanish and British empires followed this pattern. The US is repeating it. But as J. Paul Getty said, "Every time history repeats itself, the price goes up."

Yet there's an even deeper story behind empire crash.

Energy is a nation's master resource. Each empire has had an idiosyncratic ability to exploit a particular energy source that propelled its rise to economic power. The Dutch learned how to tap wood, wind and water. The British Empire fueled its ascendancy on coal. The American empire has dominated with oil.

The cautionary tale is this: No empire has been able to manage the transition to the next energy source. The joker in the deck this time around is the climate imperative to transition off fossil fuels worldwide. It requires the most complex and fiercely urgent passage in the history of human civilization. Nothing like it has ever been done.

Ecological regime change demands political regime change As Lester Brown wrote, "Socialism collapsed because it did not allow prices to tell the economic truth. Capitalism may collapse because it does not allow prices to tell the ecological truth. We are in a race between tipping points in nature and our political systems."

Just as economics is driving the destruction, it needs to power the restoration. The charge is to transform the global economy from a vicious cycle to a virtuous cycle.

As the Archbishop of Canterbury said, "The economy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the environment." Real wealth creation is based on replenishing natural systems and restoring the built environment, especially our infrastructure and cities. It's based on investing in our communities and workforce. It's been shown to work best when done all at once. Restoration is an estimated $100 trillion market. There's plenty of work to do, plenty of people to do it, and abundant financial incentive. And every dollar we spend on pre-disaster risk management will prevent seven dollars in later losses.

The rules of virtuous engagement aren't that complicated. As Fred Block wrote in The Moral Economy, "The essential idea was brilliantly expressed in the title of a 1980s bestseller, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. The guiding principles are familiar rules such as: don't hit - take turns - play by the rules - listen to the teacher - don't waste food and art supplies - and be prepared to share. These principles produce order in the elementary school classroom, and they can also assure order and prosperity in our nation's economy."

The question is: Will we change our old bad habits fast enough to beat forbidding odds?

In 2006, the worm turned. David Orr calls it a "global ecological enlightenment." A big bang of brilliant, effective work is meeting with unprecedented receptivity. Yet still the pace of destruction outstrips our response. Real success will require a giant leap across the abyss on visionary currents of bold action. It will take skillful means. It will take a big heart. And in times like these, as Albert Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."

Many of the solutions are already present. Where we don't know what to do, we have a good idea what directions to head in. Game-changing technological and social innovations are surfacing constantly. Global digital media can spread them at the speed of text messaging.

At the forefront is biomimicry, the art and science of mimicking nature's design genius. As Janine Benyus observes, nature has already done everything we want to do, without mining the past or mortgaging the future. There's nothing like having four billion years of R&D at your back.

The biomimicry company Novomer looked at excess CO2 in the atmosphere and asked: What would a plant do? It would treat it as food. Novomer figured out how to use CO2 as a feedstock to produce biodegradable green plastics. That's just one glimmer of what's possible.

Biomimicry is arguably the single most important design strategy to shoot the rapids of the next ten years. But it transcends gee-whiz technology. Biomimicry inspires us with nature's genius, and celebrates our kinship with the web of life. Among Navajo people, the worst insult you can say is, "You act like you have no relatives." Biomimicry invites us to act again as if we have relatives.

Indigenous peoples, our old-growth cultures, are the world's original biomimics. Indigenous and traditional wisdom hold equally crucial keys to restoration.

A riptide of capital is mainstreaming biomimicry and clean tech, now the third largest domain of venture capital investment. In Silicon Valley, the "" era has dawned. Compared with $100 billion for the entire Internet market, the worldwide energy market is $6 trillion. Google just put forth a $4.4 trillion Clean Energy plan. By 2030, it proposes to slash fossil fuel use by 88% and CO2 emissions by 95%.

The smart money is hot on the trail of the next industrial revolution. There's mounting pressure on Uncle Sam because government policies make or break markets.

Astoundingly the US has no national energy policy. That's hopefully about to change. David Orr, the nation's leading environmental educator, helped assemble a national network to deliver PCAP -- the Presidential Climate Action Plan. It's a pragmatic 100-day action plan for the incoming 2009 administration, and it's in play.

But for now, the real action is happening at local and regional levels.

California, the world's sixth largest economy, passed AB 32, the world's first comprehensive climate change legislation, and is gearing up to install 12.5 square miles of solar panels -- 12 times the previous largest. Massachusetts just passed the nation's most far-reaching package of renewables and green jobs legislation. Texas is about to build the biggest wind installation ever, surpassing Germany as the world leader.

Multi-city and multi-state collaborations are spreading nationwide. In the coal-fired Midwest, Re-Amp's 7-state network has helped accomplish serious state-level renewables and efficiency targets. The collaboration has also stopped all but one of 24 proposed new coal plants from being built.

Enough municipalities are competing for "greenest city" status to start a new sports league. Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York, who produced the Big Apple's 2030 green plan, said: "Shrinking the world's carbon footprint is a pro-growth strategy, indeed the only pro-growth strategy for long term." Tellingly, the nation's greenest cities are the ones with the most active citizenry -- where bottom-up meets top-down.

Demand for a green-collar workforce is rising far faster than supply. In the U.S., where income inequality is the highest of any industrialized country, these jobs pay $16-30 an hour at entry level -- $33,000 to $62,000 a year. The green-collar restoration economy can and will help address economic, racial and political injustice while healing the atmosphere.

But the real impetus behind local initiatives is to re-boot Uncle Sam because national laws and policies severely restrict local activities. And the federal government is where the real money is.

Will Uncle Sam get on board, or at least get out of the way? Will the nation devolve into a radically decentralized, regionally governed country? Both? A decentralization of power seems almost inevitable, organized by bioregions appropriate to how nature functions.

Yet in truth the environment is a "globalocal" issue, and there's major movement internationally as well. Germany, with fewer sunny days than Michigan, is the world's solar leader because of government policies that have already resulted in 14% renewable energy. Spain, France, Italy and Greece are copying the policies. The European Union is aggressively driving new markets with CO2 caps and strong incentives for clean energy entrepreneurs.

Resource-poor Japan, the gold standard of energy efficiency, is making a major play to market its radically advanced conservation technologies worldwide. China has made top-level commitments to large-scale R&D on renewables and auto gas efficiency.

We need to take this work to scale during the next decade. Breakthrough technological innovations have to spread rapidly, as do the government policies that drive these markets. Of equal importance are social innovations and political regime change.

The new e-Parliament in Europe is reaching out directly to national lawmakers across Europe and the Mediterranean to accelerate the spread of policy best practices, model legislation and parliamentary tool kits. It's pushing to build a large-scale multinational green grid within the next decade. It has been instrumental in disseminating Costa Rica's successful forest policy. By incentivizing the support of ecosystem services, Costa Rica has restored the country's forest cover from 29% to 51%, and ecotourism is roaring.

The new national constitution of Ecuador just turned property law on its head. It's the first country to institute legally enforceable rights for nature and ecosystems. Working with Tom Linzey's Community Environmental Law Defense Fund, the Ecuadorian government modeled Linzey's similar groundbreaking work with 100 local communities in the U.S.

The governments of Australia and Canada have initiated national reconciliation through formal apologies to their First Peoples for past harms. The North owes a massive ecological debt to the South. Both among and within nations, the global restoration economy will go a long way toward healing the ravages of empire, genocide and racism.

These are landmark successes. But as Michael Kinsley of Rocky Mountain Institute says, "We've got to go from success stories to systemic change." It's going to take epic cooperation among business, government and civil society, and among nations. We need to play big and aim high.

It begins with a dream. In the words of Janine Benyus, "The criterion of success is that you keep yourself alive, and you keep your offspring alive. But it's not your offspring -- it's your offspring's offsprings' offspring ten thousand years from now. Because you can't be there to take care of that offspring, the only thing you can do is to take care of the place that takes care of your offspring."

In that spirit, Bioneers initiated a collaborative project last year in our back yard called Dreaming New Mexico. Its purpose is to help reconcile human and natural systems at the state level.

The project co-director Peter Warshall came up with the idea of creating future maps of our state's dreams. The first is the Age of Renewables. The year is 2020 and we've done everything right. What might New Mexico's energy dream look like?

It's an eminently do-able dream, grounded in rigorous research and drawing heavily on our state's wealth of talent. The map shows the practical vision of a green grid, the available sources of local renewable power, a decentralized power system, and more. The back of the map breaks out key domains -- local solar, wind and geothermal -- as well as issues of governance, transportation and environmental justice. An accompanying pamphlet goes into depth.

With a grant from the Fund of the Tides Foundation, we've worked with Rebecca Moore, Tanya Keen, John Gardiner and the Google Earth Outreach team to adapt one part of the future map onto Google Earth. It's a new kind of storytelling -- a "geo-narrative." You can see it on the web at:

We're now working on a future map of a localized food system. We hope these templates might be useful tools for other communities to dream their futures.

I'd like to close with the words of David Oates from an essay called "Imagine" in High Country News.

"To imagine is difficult. It takes courage - encouragement; it takes opportunities carefully constructed (by me or the fates). Then something magic happens: A key turns in a lock, eyebrows ascend on foreheads -- and a new world is glimpsed, a 3-D moment that dazzles.

"A vision predicates an imaginative leap: that we are -- after all -- fundamentally connected to each other - that my fate and happiness are not private matters only, but a shared project. A tax cut takes no imagination: It's a few more bucks in your pocket. But seeing one's ownership in a community, one's own face in someone else's child, that takes imagination.

"Imagine - combining our resources to relieve suffering and to open up dead-ends of poverty and hopelessness. Imagine knowing that our fate is each other.

"Imagine: knowing that our fate also swims with the salmon and grows with the trees.

"Imagine living beyond yourself - finding the thing you're good at and in love with, even if it doesn't pay so well. That would be like coming back to life, wouldn't it? It would be like grace.

"Could Western civilization’s oldest ethical instructions of the Golden Rule hold acute relevance to our planetary environmental crisis? Could restoring respect for human beings be the key to restoring the health of the planet? Author Paul Hawken has been tracking the rapid proliferation of nonprofit, non-governmental organizations around the world. It boils down to this: Taking care of nature means taking care of people, and taking care of people means taking care of nature."

The Golden Rule: Restoring the Earth by Restoring Human Dignity

Paul Hawken: There is an environmental movement and there is a social justice movement. If they could truly become one movement the transformation would be unimaginable.

When a black child in Oakland winces at the thought of an ancient tree being cut down in northern California, and when an ex logger in northern California winces at the thought of a teenager, a black teenager in Oakland, being cut down on those streets, then we’ll know that day has arrived.

Macy: It’s all alive, it’s all connected, it’s all intelligent, it’s all relatives.

Intro: Scientists tell us that concern with the environment will no longer be just one of many issues in this new century. It will move to center stage. It will become the context of everything, of our lives, our businesses, our politics. We are, in fact, moving from the information age to the age of biology. In this series, "The Bioneers: Revolution From the Heart of Nature", we salute the Bioneers:the biological pioneers who are working with nature to heal nature, honoring both traditional native wisdom and modern scientific knowledge, restoring the Earth by changing the world.

NARRATION: One the most profound instructions for living on the planet earth should be familiar to any thoughtful house guest: leave things better off than you find them. As biomimic Janine Benyus likes to say, the best way to take care of future generations is to take care of the place that will take care of them. But could it be that the best way to preserve the place for our children and the ecosystems they will depend on, is to respect the dignity of people today?

Author Paul Hawken has been tracking the rapid proliferation of not for profit, non-governmental helping organizations around the world. He has found that at their core they share some simple, ancient, and powerfully uniting principles.

Join us for the next half hour as we explore The Golden Rule: Restoring the Earth by Restoring Human Dignity, with Paul Hawken.

My name is Neil Harvey. I'll be your host.

Welcome to the Bioneers: Revolution From the Heart of Nature.

Paul Hawken: In my talk here two years ago I suggested that the social justice, environmental movement and indigenous movements were intertwining and morphing, and became or becoming the largest movement in the history of the world, that they were in essence, humanity’s immune response to political corruption, economic disease, and ecological degradation.

NARRATION: Paul Hawken is the brilliant author of such landmark books as “Blessed Unrest,” and “The Ecology of Commerce.” As a social entrepreneur, he has launched several environmentally focused companies.

He spoke at a recent Bioneers conference.

Paul Hawken: I’ve spent, since that speech two years ago, two years researching and writing, trying to trace back, where did we come from - not just as people but where did this movement come from? It is growing very fast now. It is very large now but it actually has very, very deep and ancient roots.

What we know, I think, is that over the years the ingenuity, the genius, the imagination of the organizations, social entrepreneurs, of engineers, of designers, of individuals has created a powerful arsenal of tools to address what ails us in the world. And the financial and technical means are in place to restore the needs of the biosphere and society. There’s no question about that.

Poverty, hunger, and preventable childhood diseases can be eliminated within a generation. Energy use can be reduced by 90% in developed countries, and the remaining 10% can be substituted with renewable energy. The educational gaps and opportunities that exist particularly in this country, can be closed within ten years. Dignified living wage jobs can be provided for every single man and woman in the world who wants one.

The toxins and poisons that permeate our daily lives can be eliminated through green chemistry, biological agriculture can increase yields, reduce and eliminate pesticides and poisons and other inputs, and save family farms. Green, safe, livable cities are at the fingertips of people, designers, architects and planners. Inexpensive water technologies can decrease usage and improve the purity of water so that every singe person on earth has clean drinking water. Now, what’s going on now? We can do all that if this movement is so big, right? Something is missing.

It has been said by many that we cannot save this planet unless there’s widespread spiritual or religious awakening. In other words, it’s here.

NARRATION: Might an awakening actually be underway? Some movement without a name, humanity’s immune response to the unprecedented challenges we face – is it here? Natural Capital, a nonprofit institute founded by Paul Hawken, counts how many organizations dedicate themselves to restoring the earth and healing human culture. Audubon Society bird-lovers, a Cree Indian project opposing toxic waste, you name it—the count has reached one million groups worldwide—involving ten million people. But it’s not the first time such an immune system-like movement has kicked in.

More than two thousand years ago, in an era not unlike our own, the emergence of agricultural states introduced an unprecedented scale of displacement, slavery, war, and environmental disruption. Hawken points out that these violent upheavals resulted in a great moral ferment. He says the resulting precepts remain with us to this day—and unconsciously drive this movement- this movement without a name. Again, Paul Hawken:

Paul Hawken: In her work, which I recommend, The Great Transformation by Karen Armstrong, she details the origins of our religious traditions in what’s called the axial age period between 200 and 900 BCE. This is a time when much of the world turned away from violence and cruelty and barbarity. There was such an upwelling of philosophy, and insight, intellect in that period that is carried forth in the work of Socrates and Sophocles, and Lao Tzu, Confucius, Mencius, the Buddha, Rabbi Hillel and others.

But rather than religious institutions, these teachers were bringing forth social movements that addressed human suffering.

Later, they were called Confucianism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Monotheistic Judaism, democracy, and philosophical rationalism. But in their origin these were not theocratic systems, they did not require belief, they required practice, action. They were not trying to create doctrinaire institutions but compassionate society. They asked their students to question and challenge everything, to never take anything on faith. They urged people to change how they acted in the world, and all that relied on one common principle, the golden rule. Do not ever, ever, do anything to anything or anyone that you would not have done to yourself. Rabbi Hillel said, don’t do anything to your neighbor you wouldn’t do to yourself. That is the Torah, read it. All the rest is commentary. That’s it, if you get that, right?

These were not theocratic systems. They didn’t require belief, they required a change in behavior. Armstrong again, this is a quote, “The axial sages were not interested in providing their disciples with a little edifying uplift after which they could return with renewed vigor to their self centered lives.” Their objective was to create an entirely different kind of human being. Sages insisted that people abandon their egotism and greed, their violence and unkindness. And not only was it wrong to kill another human being, you must not even speak a hostile word about or towards that person, not even make an irritable gesture. Further you cannot combine your benevolence to your own people. Your concern must somehow extend to the entire world. If people behave with kindness and generosity to others they could save the world. Well this is what they were teaching, but no one at that time said, hey, we’re in the midst of a spiritual awakening. It was a very difficult time, far from perfect. It was riddled with betrayals and jealousies and misunderstandings. Axial sages lived in a time of war. Their goal was to understand the source of violence, not to combat it. Their practices guided the mind with very simple precepts that slowly and gradually changed the heart. Enlightened was not the goal, kindness, action and compassion were.

These teachings, these teachings are the source of charity in the world. They are the source of NGOs, of philanthropy, of institutes, of collectives, of alliances, of faith-based organizations. These teachings are the source of what it is that we are creating to this day.

And what I’m suggesting is that, unknowingly perhaps, this movement is tipping its hat and returning the favor to the axial age, and is collectively forming the basis of a spiritual awakening.

But this is a very different awakening. It is accompanied by an exquisite understanding of biology, ecology, physiology, quantum physics, cosmology, and very, and most importantly, unlike the massive failing of the axial age, the feminine is now seen as sacred and holy.

And it recognizes that the wisdom of indigenous people from all over the world, from Africa to Nunavut, people who didn’t fall asleep and require a great awakening, who didn’t try to globalize the earth or conquer others are our sisters and bothers in this movement.

I have friends, who, if they hear this speech, they may be here today, will vigorously protest these suggestions, pointing out that NGOs are small minded, there are turf wars, there’s competition, they’re selfish, some of the leaders, or whatever, okay, but this is not a question of whether the human condition permeates this movement, it most certainly does. Clay feet march in every single protest that I’ve been in because I’ve been in the protest, okay, but it is a question, surely, of whether the underlying values of this movement are permeating global society, and I say they are.

And this question is about intent.

What is the intention of this movement? If you look at the values, the missions, the goals, the core principles that inform it and then you parse that language and underneath it, albeit unstated, is always the golden rule. And second is, life is sacred - sacredness of all life, whether it is a child or creature or a culture. This is this movement. This is this awakening.

NARRATION: Could western civilization’s oldest ethical instructions have relevance to our newest environmental problems? Could restoring respect for human beings be the key to restoring the health of the planet? When we return, Paul Hawken explores the biology of compassion.

This is The Golden Rule: Restoring the Earth by Restoring Human Dignity.

If human beings were truly respected, could the Earth be restored? Today, in the San Francisco Bay Area, salmon have all but vanished—victims of dams, depleted rivers, chemical pollution, and other insults. But what if, over the past two centuries, human dignity, culture, health, and livelihoods had been respected? What if settlers hadn’t decimated Native Americans whose cultures co-evolved consciously and successfully with salmon for thousands of years? What if we didn’t let dam builders flood villages and native sacred sites? What if export agribusinesses couldn’t siphon off huge quantities of river water and expose migrant workers to pesticides, which then leach into what water remains and contaminate the bay? If the Golden Rule prevailed, would the salmon prevail? It’s the kind of question posed by Paul Hawken’s unnamed movement of millions.

Truly addressing that question could have profound effects. Again, Paul Hawken:

Paul Hawken: It is the first time a movement understands that honoring the web of life is integral to compassion, and as integral as addressing poverty and violence and oppression. There are still two movements though. There is an environmental movement and there is a social justice movement. They are definitely coming closer, every Bioneers is about furthering that, but they are not one yet. If they could truly become one movement the transformation possible would be unimaginable. When a black child in Oakland winces at the thought of an ancient tree being cut down in northern California, and when an ex logger in northern California winces at the thought of a teenager, a black teenager in Oakland, being cut down on those streets, then we’ll know that day has arrived.

The thing about the environmental movement is it seems to have the upper leg because the house is burning down. It is. Literally. So it is very easy for the environmental movement to turn to the social justice and say, yeah, I know, everything, that’s really important, but gosh, the house is burning down. Come, you should come on our bus and join us. But I think that it is upside down and backwards. Global warming is injustice. It is a type of colonialism. I think that if the talent, the imagination, the ideas, the brilliance that is in this room, that is represented elsewhere in so many ways is going to become effective in time, we have to slow down and stop and change the bus. I think the environmental movement has to get on the social justice bus.

NARRATION: Paul Hawken says that global warming—and by extension fossil fuels burning—is injustice. So would our fossil-fuel culture be possible if we didn’t callously disregard human health and culture? What if we forbade coal mining simply because it fouls Appalachian drinking water—and forbade crude oil extraction from Amazonian rainforests and arctic slopes because it destroys indigenous cultures; refineries because their pollution doesn’t belong in our bodies; and the use of fossil fuels because global warming will deprive Inuit people of their livelihoods? What if Rachel Carson was right—that pesticides are a human rights issue? What if “the environment” is actually our body, our language, our livelihood, our brother and sister? Would we act more urgently? Paul Hawken takes us to the Civil Rights movement for an answer.

Paul Hawken: When Martin Luther King was drafted into being leader of the Montgomery Boycott 51 years ago, it was five days after Rosa Parks got on the bus, and what is often not told is that when the door opened that night on December 1st the bus driver was James Blake. Now James Blake had physically manhandled Rosa Parks, and wrestled and threw her down to the ground 12 years before. And she had never seen that bus driver again. And when that door opened up her heart dropped, she was absolutely panic-stricken. And she got on the bus. Amazing act of courage on her part. And five days later when she was arraigned, they elected Martin Luther King to be head of the Montgomery improvement association and he had 15-20 minutes to give his speech and the first thing he said—it’s one of his finest speeches to this day, but was a simple phrase and he said, “There comes a time.” And if he were alive today he would say it again: there comes a time. “There comes a time for all that is harmful to leave.” There are one million organizations in this world. One million escorts, and they are here to transform the nightmares of empire and the disgrace of war upon the people and places on this earth. We are the transgressors and we are the forgivers. “We” means all of us, everyone. There can be no green movement unless there’s a black, brown, and copper colored movement.

I said this was an immune system. Well immune systems fail too. This movement most certainly can fail. And what stands before us, I think, is a gift of self-perception, the gift of seeing who we really are. Who am I? I mean we will either come together as one globalized people or we will disappear as a civilization.

NARRATION: Will we disappear as a civilization indeed? New science offers some hints. According to Hawken, pioneering research has suggested that the brain is actually an evolutionary outgrowth of the immune system. And for us humans, that quadrillion-cell system thrives on cooperation and compassion; studies show that volunteering and having strong social networks help people live longer and healthier lives. Keep thy brother and sister, love they neighbor, do justly unto others—these old tenets appear rooted in biology. For Paul Hawken, they make us who we are.

Paul Hawken: Our minds were made to defend us, born of an immune system that brought us to this stage in development and evolution. We are so surfeited with the metaphors of war so when we hear the word defense we think attack, but the defense of the world can only be accomplished by cooperation and compassion. Science now knows that every child while still in diapers exhibits altruistic behavior. It’s hardwired. It’s in our genes. Concern for the well being of others is something we are born with. We become human by helping and working with others, and buried in those one quadrillion cells, those lymphocytes, in those genes literally is faith and love.

There is such a fierceness here. There is no explanation for the raw courage and the heart seen over and again in the people who march, speak, create and resist and build.

It is the fiercest of what it means to know that we are human and want to survive. To witness the breakdown worldwide in civility into camps and to ideologies and into meaningless wars, and to watch the accelerating breakdown of our environmental systems is harrowing and dispiriting.

And what it takes to arrest our decent into chaos is one person after another remembering who they are, where they are and joining together to save and restore life on earth.

It is such an honor and privilege to speak to you, for which I offer my bow and my deepest respect. Thank you all very much.

Paul Hawken.

In the unnamed movement Paul Hawken has uncovered, millions are Remembering who we are, remembering where we are, remembering to do unto others only what we would have others do to us and remembering that all life is sacred.

Science is saying that we are hard wired for compassion. It appears that as I respect your rights, care for you, and work for justice for all, what was missing will be restored:

Love will be restored and so will be restored - the Earth.

The Golden Rule: Restoring the Earth by Restoring Human Dignity

The Barter Opportunity

November 16, 2008

Catherine’s speech on local bartering at the IRTA conference is now available on Google Video

You have heard me say or write before “in the destruction of the old, let there be the creation of the new.”Drowning in depressing market news, I flew into Orlando on Monday and drove south for an hour and a half to arrive at the lovely Westgate River Ranch Resort for the 29th annual convention of the International Reciprocal Trade Association (IRTA) . For an introduction to IRTA’s board and staff, click here.

This morning I gave a keynote address about the current state of the global financial system and why market events should increase demand for local and network barter exchanges and alternative currencies. My speech was sponsored by XO Software, based in Auckland, New Zealand. Given my love for all things Kiwi, it was an auspicious start. Numerous insightful questions were a great introduction to this unbelievably entrepreneurial group of people from all across the United States and around the world.

I then participated on a panel, “Community Currencies & Sustainable Businesses” led by Annette Riggs, founder of Community Connect and one of the leading experts in the US on non-cash transaction models. Both audience and panel were filled with exciting examples of the barter and exchange networks percolating throughout North America, Europe and Asia, including BarterXchange Singapore, the Vermont Sustainable Exchange in Burlington, Vermont, Tradesource in Phoenix, Arizona. Reiner Husemann of EBB-Euro Barter Business in Germany gave an excellent presentation on membership card systems and how they were increasing economic activity for members.

The executive director of IRTA, Ron Whitney, and I had agreed that a portion of my speaking fee would be paid in credits on the IRTA system. Imagine my delight at learning that one of the participants, We Trade Network is in Western Montana, same as Solari’s chief of operations. We do all of our printing in Montana. We Trade Network has three printing companies in their network. This is too perfect for words.

The way to learn something is, of course, to do it. So I am looking forward to seeing what I and Solari can do by joining IRTA and We Trade Network and using barter exchanges to swap goods and services. Meantime, it may be worth checking out what barter networks are in your community and networks and whether they can be of service to you. As the dollar keeps falling, it makes sense to strengthen relationships with people and networks who know how to make things go without cash.

At times like this it is good to remember that there are a lot of exciting things going on in the real economy.

The science of happiness
(...) Scientists work by comparing people's reported happiness and a host of other factors such as age, sex, marital status, religion, health, income, unemployment and so on. In survey after survey involving huge groups of people, significant correlations between happiness and some other factors are repeated. At the moment scientists cannot prove causation, whether for example people are healthy because they are happy, or whether people are happy because they are healthy. However, psychologists have been able to identify some very strong links. According to Professor Diener the evidence suggests that happy people live longer than depressed people. "In one study, the difference was nine years between the happiest group and the unhappiest group, so that's a huge effect." Cigarette smoking can knock a few years off your life, three years, if you really smoke a lot, six years. "So nine years for happiness is a huge effect." Richer but no happier -- Happiness researchers have been monitoring people's life satisfaction for decades. Happy people have close friends. Yet despite all the massive increase in our wealth in the last 50 years our levels of happiness have not increased."Standard of living has increased dramatically and happiness has increased not at all, and in some cases has diminished slightly," said Professor Daniel Kahneman of the University of Princeton. "There is a lot of evidence that being richer... isn't making us happier." The research suggests that richer countries do tend to be happier than poor ones, but once you have a home, food and clothes, then extra money does not seem to make people much happier. CLIP

Knowing that every time of peace in human history ended in a war, what should "Peace on Earth" look like, so it would not result in a war again?

Unless we can answer this question, and unless we can unify and harmonize all the eventual answers in order to prevent any discrepancies in the answers to cause strife in real life all over again, we can never achieve real "Peace on Earth".

We should learn how to imagine, in as much detail as possible, what would constitute a real "Peace on Earth", and then, since we each have different concepts of the idea, we should learn how to constructively reconcile all our differences in a model (or by using any other expedient way, e. g. in "gedanken experiments", meditations, "think tanks", etc.) in order to arrive at a unified design of "Peace on Earth", because only one version of reality can manifest at a time--we have to ensure that this reality is one that is accepted by all of us who are to experience it; hence we have to "design" a reality in a model first, we have to see that we like it, and then we set out to materialize it coherently together cooperating closely and enthusiastically.
The Earth can possibly have only one future--i. e.: only one future at a time can manifest itself a present, and we'd better design our future to our liking! Letting our future merely "happen" and hoping for the best has, so far, rarely resulted in any long term periods of time that everybody would like!

Unifying of all the different ideas that we might have about the future of the Earth in a model would prevent conflicts from happening in real life, since, after all, wars happen because people go to war so that Peace happens their way.

The way of collectively designing of our collective future would differ from the usual way of constructing of our future by forever improving on our present, each of us hoping for their own version of reality to materialize--something clearly impossible, because the "version of reality" that we are all privately hoping for is, in many instances, unclear even to ourselves at many times; to hope that we, somehow, might arrive at a by all preferred reality is delusional.

So that we do indeed arrive at a reality that would be preferred by all, we have to first see (in a model) what it actually is that we, collectively, want! Unless we can agree on what it is that we collectively want, we would merely continue to strive for a reality that we would like to experience individually--and this would, of course, result in reconciling of our ideals in reality, with the accompanying suffering that we are all too familiar with: social and environmental degradation that happens only because we don't agree on what should be the best for all of us. In other words--instead of reconciling of our differences harmlessly in models (or by using any other expedient means), we let our differences to reconcile in real time/space causing real harm and grief.

The idea of modeling the future of the Earth is also presented, in more detail, at

Find, or imagine that there is, a mental space in which all the ideas of what anyone might think that their future should look like would be reconciled with each other, so that conflicts in real life would be prevented from occurring.

N. B. !
Over the ages people always desired a lasting peace; they prayed for it and imagined it continuously since time immemorial. "Peace" is a goal of many religions and many ideologies; the reason that, so far, no lasting peace in the world materialized yet is due to our (sometimes great) differences in what we mean when we say "peace on Earth". Since we do not have a unified, common idea of the concept, "peace on Earth" can never happen. Instead we always end up fighting for our version of "peace", and we wonder why any lasting "Peace on Earth" never really comes about.

Statement of Purpose - MOST INTERESTING!

(The following reflects author's own understanding of the terms "Mahayana" and "Bodhisattva").
Mahayana is a view that acknowledges the interconnectedness of all phenomena across all time and space, and that any one's well-being depends on the well-being of every other being across all time and all space. A Bodhisattva is one who strives to realize the ideal of Mahayana, and therefore regards the well-being of all other beings as important as one's own. To live ecologically and socially sustainably means to acknowledge the need of all other beings to live well also. The need for living ecologically and socially sustainably is implicit in Mahayana. Therefore an aspiring Bodhisattva would help all beings to be mentally and physically optimally well, and therefore an aspiring Bodhisattva would promote the way of living ecologically and socially sustainably. MEDITATION: Find, or imagine that there is, a mental space in which all the ideas of what anyone might think that their future should look like would be reconciled with each other, so that conflicts in real life would be prevented from occurring. Please dedicate your practice to the optimal benefit of all beings of all three times and ten directions of space, starting here and now on Earth.

The Need for Designing the Future Collaboratively
All of us are planning our future to a greater, or lesser degree, but rarely we include all others in our plans. We set out to create our future, but we rarely succeed in obtaining the kind of future that we want, because, at most times, our plans for our future are at odds with the plans for future of others. The differences that there are among our ideas of what our future should look like result, not infrequently, in strife; not infrequently in violence.I propose that the differences that there exist among our ideas about what our common future should look like be resolved in a model first in order to prevent violence and strife occurring in real world.

An Invitation
Model Earth: An Invitation to participate in creating of an interactive model of an ideal, ecologically and socially sustainable Earth, a model that would be being designed by all and anyone, a model that would portray an Earth possessing optimal living conditions for all those who share it for the purpose of there being a universal reference that would be helpful in any projects concerning the future of any social entity--from a locally based community, to the whole Earth. CLIP - Some quite good thoughts to ponder there!

By Lou Bognon

We are indeed powerful creators of our realities. And, now we are facing one of the most interesting of our creations: the global financial crisis, even if most of us will disown the idea of having had anything to do with it in the first place.

From a spiritual perspective of course, the financial crisis is excellent news for our collective growth and evolution as a species.

Perhaps now - that we no longer can afford be so focused on “things” and how many of them our money can buy after having created this new reality of lack in the money supply - we will start tapping into our inner world and relate to each other in more profound and meaningful ways. After all, we have been flirting long enough with the surface of things, through the stuff we wear, buy, give, receive, consume, waste, tuck and throw away.

I cannot help but refer to my third book, The Divine Laws, where we are informed of the soon to come time of “crumbling” when all systems that no longer function for the greatest good of all will disintegrate before our eyes and we will be inundated with obsolete staff that no longer serve any purpose.

As I drive along the many highways of Johannesburg, I cannot help noticing how the big SUV’s (sports utility vehicles) are starting to look (at least to me) more and more like “FUV’s” (funerary utility vehicles). Personally, I have nothing against such vehicles per se – when and where they serve their purpose in farms and rural areas where most roads really need the gifts of a 4x4.

This observation aside, what we are watching is just not the beginning of the “crumbling” but a confirmation and a consolidation of the new reality that informs us that things cannot stay as they are and so it is that we have created, collectively, crisis after crisis to come to this important point.

As the European leaders met in China this week to discuss this financial crisis and try to persuade the Chinese to part with some of the many trillions of their hard earned savings as a direct result of their hard labour and multi-factory production in their heartland, it was ironic to actually witness the death of capitalism just as taught by Marx, Engels and Lenin, namely: “for capitalism to die all that was needed was to give it enough rope so that it would hang itself”.

And so it came to pass that capitalism hanged itself in the great hall of China’s communist party as China listened to its request for help and replied using more of the same rope and more of the same capitalist rhetoric as we have been hearing from all capitalist capitals: - let the IMF become even more powerful and involved.

Given China’s astronomical reserves in US dollars, it begs this pertinent question: how long will they hold on to the tons of paper and bonds and therefore how long and/or what will take for them to “suicide the dollar” all together? Time alone will tell. This is a potential reality already inscribed in the many future probabilities and the global shift of power to the east, predicted by Chinese visionaries a very long time ago, even before the rise (and the fall) of communism.

And so it is that we are now faced with a reality where we all need to face how obsessed we have become with buying, collecting, showing-off and even classifying each other by the amount and size of the outward staff. This has bred so much fear (of not having and being enough) so much injustice, greed, insecurity and misery that it is only normal that the frenzy sooner or later, had to come to an end.

And this is where we are at present. The least affected are those who remained somewhat awake through this creation and therefore did not engage the illusion or the frenzy. The more affected are those still trapped in the victim role. Too late though, to blame stock exchanges, banks, politicians, policies or conspiracies.

This is the time to create anew. This is a time to learn to let go of any idea of a saviour and a fixer – we are indeed the ones we have been waiting for all along – and it is time for this new reality to sink in. No politician and no economist (certainly not of the type we have been accustomed to anyway), will make any difference – we need to start taking our lives into our own hands and soon realise that the least we rely on the crumbling system/s the better off we will be.

In closing I am reminded to quote the words made famous by Jimmy Hendrix: When the Power of Love will overcome the love of power - we will be OK.

This applies to America, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Canada, and/or every single country on Earth, as the Power of Love has nowhere, as yet, overcome the love of power. But we could create this reality. Now! Who we really are, our true spiritual identity – can indeed -create anything at all.

The Spiritual Dimensions of Obama’s Leadership

by Gordon Davidson and Corinne McLaughlin (November 2008)

There has always been a higher, spiritual hand active in the life of the United States, beginning with its founding in 1776 by one of the greatest gatherings of political geniuses ever seen on the planet. And throughout its 212 year life, at each moment of agonizing need, the United States has seen an inspired leader emerge to meet the crises of the times with vision, strength and the gifts required. Abraham Lincoln saved the Union and ended slavery, Franklin D. Roosevelt acted boldly to help end the Great Depression and defeat the Axis Powers. And now, in this moment of historical crisis, another great leader, uniquely qualified to meet the needs of our nation and the world, has come forth, overlighted by Spirit, as an expression of the soul of the American people.

A Spiritual Catalyst

Obama signifies more than the emergence of an inspired, gifted leader. He is like a catalyst dropped into a supersaturated solution, that builds a crystalline structure around itself based on its innate pattern, and then transforms the whole solution. The supersaturated solution is the collective spiritual awakening that has for years been calling out for a leader to unite our nation and establish right relations with the world. Suddenly, it has crystallized around Obama. His ideas and presence among us, speaking to the “better angels of our nature” as Lincoln did, has crystallized a movement that says, “Yes we can!” We can be better than who we have been, both as individuals and as a nation.

With his gifts of oratory, his self reflective spiritual awareness, and his proven commitment and effectiveness in serving people, Obama is a major catalyst for change. He has come with great spiritual support behind him, not only from the spiritual powers who always guide and support true, inspired leaders, but also with precipitating power. He catalyzes into action all that we the people of the U.S. and the world have achieved in our inner spiritual unfoldment at this time. He recognizes this when he says, “We are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the change we seek.” He affirms us and we affirm him in a mutually empowering circle.

Obama has come forth as part of a large inner group, larger than the group working on his campaign or his transition team. All over the world, tens of thousands of people were praying and meditating, asking for spiritual help and support for Obama to be president. This vast network of organized, meditating groups is also part of his group, and one of the reasons he was able to be elected.

A leader of Obama’s stature comes into the world with a destiny that is assisted by the spiritual forces who guide and guard human evolution, actualized by the radiation of his own soul and by the collective consciousness of the people who call him forth and prepare his way. The Divine hand can open many doors, which is why so many seemingly uncanny events aided his easy election to the U.S. Senate--in addition to all his hard work. As he mentions in The Audacity of Hope, “Later, some reporters would declare me the luckiest politician in the entire fifty states.”

All that has occurred in the life of the U.S. since the Kennedy era, and especially the last eight years, could be seen as building a portal for Obama to enter into national prominence. A great leader emerges as the right person, at the right place, at the right time. This is a result of the interaction of spiritual energies descending on the planet, humanity’s awakening consciousness, and our free choices as citizens.

Obama’s election has been heralded as the beginning of a new era because he is our first black president. However, this new era is actually an interaction between a steadily more enlightened citizenry and the leaders they call forth. Obama is part of a wave of wiser, more enlightened political leaders who have long been predicted in many spiritual teachings. Such leaders are emerging steadily in every field of human endeavor, and Obama now brings this emerging light into the U.S. political realm.

Setting a New Spiritual Tone

Through their presence, the words they speak and what they do, every leader sets a tone for all within an organization or a nation. The reason people have supported Obama with such fervor is that they sense a new vibration, a new tone that he is resonating. America and the world knows this is needed. He sounds the note of unity within diversity, respect for all, honesty, plain speaking and fulfilling the highest we know we are capable of. After his election, a palpable shift took place throughout the U.S., as everyone recognizes that a new vibration, a new tone is being sounded for our nation and our people.

Spiritually advanced leaders like Obama follow an inner, spiritual compass and they lead from the inside out. Obama has been very open about his inner spiritual life, as quoted in a remarkable 2004 interview with the Chicago Sun-Times before he was elected Senator. He told the interviewer, “The biggest challenge, I think, is always maintaining your moral compass. Those are the conversations I'm having internally. I'm measuring my actions against that inner voice that for me is audible, is active. It tells me where I think I'm on track and where I'm off track.”He continually asks himself, “How does this connect with a larger sense of purpose?”

He also said in the interview, “The most powerful political moments for me come when I feel like my actions are aligned with a certain truth. I can feel it. When I'm talking to a group and I'm saying something truthful, I can feel a power that comes out of those statements that is different than when I'm just being glib or clever.”

Obama is comfortable reflecting on his inner life and choices, yet he’s also detached and cool, not responding with fear or anger to attacks. He adds, “I think Gandhi is a great example of a profoundly spiritual man who acted and risked everything on behalf of those values but never slipped into intolerance or dogma. He seemed to always maintain an air of doubt about him. I also think of Dr. King, and Lincoln. Those three are good examples for me of people who applied their faith to a larger canvas without allowing that faith to metastasize into something that is hurtful.”

Lincoln has been a major inspiration for Obama, as he reads many books on Lincoln and quotes him often. When he was a U.S. senator, he’d often take a run in the evening to the Lincoln Memorial, sitting and reflecting there. He seems to have many of the same spiritual qualities as Lincoln, such as practical wisdom, humility, and a dedication to healing divisions and uniting people.

Obama is attractive to people because of his unaffected, direct manner. He called himself the “improbable candidate with the funny name,” yet he is a gifted orator. The creative power of his lighted, inspired words sounds an inner note that people recognize and respond to. Intelligent and visionary, he brings deep change, as revealed in his birth chart. Aquarius is his rising sign, the sign of his soul, so he is naturally identified with the people collectively and resonant with universal brother/sisterhood. He says, “My politics are informed by a belief that we’re all connected…I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper, we are all children of God. Or I can express it in secular terms.” What is most captivating about him is that he models a new way of being: self-reflective and relaxed, yet focused, disciplined and organized.

Obama’s spiritual nature is recognized by leaders on the right as well as the left. For example, Frank Schaeffer, one of the founders of the Religious Right, wrote that Obama will be one of “our greatest and most beloved presidents,” by virtue of his quiet reason and wisdom, personal humility and spirit of service. “Speaking as a believing Christian, I see the hand of a merciful God in Obama’s candidacy,” he said.

Obama’s generosity years ago to a perfect stranger in the airport, giving her $100 to pay for extra baggage weight, when he barely had money himself, speaks volumes about him. And when it was discovered that his opponent’s 18 year old unmarried daughter was having a baby, he didn’t see this as an opportunity to attack, but rather graciously pointed out that his own mother had him when she was only 18.

The Significance of Obama’s Name

For those who understand how to read the Book of Life, formulations of names are no coincidence. Obama’s name carries great potency and good within it. Barack is derived from the African Kiswahili word baraka, which means blessing. In Arab influenced languages, baraka also means “spiritual wisdom, or a blessing transmitted from God.” His last name begins with an “O”, a circle, that is the symbol of wholeness or completeness, and it also includes the two syllables “ba,” and “ma.” In multiple cultures “ba” signifies father, and “ma” mother. His middle name, Hussein, generally means in Arabic, “good, or good looking.” Thus we have a name that means a good and handsome man, carrying spiritual wisdom and blessings from God -- empowering wholeness and balance as father and mother, or masculine and feminine energies.

An immediate impact of his name is seen in the Arab/Muslim world, and its relationship with the West, which is arguably the most significant political/military issue of our times. The very fact that he has a Muslim middle name, and a first name of Arabic derivation, has already had a large impact on Muslims the world over, who thought the U.S. would never elect a black man with a Muslim name. The Iraqis have already said they would trust Obama to keep U.S. agreements with them more than Bush, and some Taliban leaders were quoted in a Pakistani newspaper saying they would be more willing to negotiate with an Obama - led administration. This is a result of more than his name, but it very much adds to the openness that the Muslim world now has to the U.S. and soon to be President Obama.

These are additional indications of a higher power at work, strengthening and supporting Obama’s appearance out of seeming nowhere in a few short years, as the right man, in the right place, at the right time, and even with the right name, all of which is extraordinary.

Transforming Adversarial Relationships and Creating Empowerment

One of the more subtle, yet very transformational aspects of Obama is how he is creating a new type of relationship with the American people, as well as the people of the world. He treats people as adults, assumes their intelligence and speaks to it, by explaining complex issues in relatively straightforward language. He speaks at a deeper level than usual to complex and emotionally difficult issues like race, which he did brilliantly during the campaign. He draws out the best in people by speaking to the highest in us, and refusing to play to fear and anger. He doesn’t create separation with those he disagrees with, because he listens to their point of view, and is clear about the distinction between the person and their ideas.

He recently thanked the people of Illinois, saying “It was there that I learned to disagree without being disagreeable; to seek compromise while holding fast to those principles that can never be compromised; and to always assume the best in people instead of the worst.” He is a very disciplined and focused leader who expects results. He has created a “no drama Obama” group culture-- meaning that big egos, drama queens and leakers will not be welcomed in his administration.

He refuses to fall into the trap of polarities, but rather emphasizes what unites us, rather than what divides us as a people. One of the keynotes of his campaign was “Respect, empower, include.” This is a message that the American people were hungering for, and the election showed that he has a vision that we know in our hearts we need. He doesn’t gloss over differences, but acknowledges divisions, affirming he will be the president for all the people. He said we have to …“admit the possibility that the other side might sometimes have a point.” He has the capacity to listen to the truth on all sides, and find a higher truth that includes us all.

Obama doesn’t promise to do everything for us, but rather helps us organize ourselves and invites us to do great things together. He promotes a partnership approach with his staff and with the American people, building a team spirit. When he was mobilizing voters with his famous “fired up, ready to go” speech, he often would end with the statement, “Together we will heal the nation and transform the world.” People described this as a bolt of electricity going through the crowd.

And with millions of hours of volunteer time and focused dedication to the vision and purpose, ordinary people did indeed change the world. In his Berlin speech, attended by over 100,000 people, he said, “I’m an American who views myself as a fellow citizen of the world.” He seems destined to lead the world through the sheer power of his vision, oratory and practical, common sense approach to issues.

Opening the Door to a Multicultural World

Obama has been recognized by the younger generation, as well as by people of all races and cultures worldwide, because they sense he is a leader who will further open the doorway into a more harmonious and beautiful multi-cultural world. This world where cultural and racial differences are enjoyed and celebrated is already emerging, and Obama’s ascendancy stabilizes and affirms this new world for all of us to see.

There is also a deeper subconscious level of world relief that his ascendancy has brought. For people of color all around the world, who have been exploited and oppressed by the white race for a very long time, there is a new psychological feeling of safety in the world. They now have less to fear and even something to hope for from a person of color in the White House.

The emergence into young adulthood of the Millennial generation, the largest in U.S. history, and their demand for real solutions to the multitude of problems we face, is a potent spiritual energy which has been crucial to the success of Obama’s campaign, and will be for his presidency. The dozens of music videos created by young grassroots activists as well as major stars, chanting Obama’s name like a spiritual mantra, symbolized the call of the younger generation for a truly inspired leader.

Even up to the final hours before the election, many people could not believe that a black man could be elected. Many were holding their breath to see if the election process would be tampered with again as in previous elections. Others thought that when people got into the privacy of the voting booths, some hidden, subconscious racism would rise up and prevent them from voting for Obama. But Obama believed that white Americans were ready to go beyond racism, and vote based on the “content of his character, not the color of his skin,” as Dr. Martin Luther King said. And in one, great collective act of mass redemption, white America did so, to the seeming amazement of itself and the entire world.

Obama’s belief in the best in us, offering the opportunity to transcend ourselves and be greater than we have been, is the sign of an inspired and even a transcendental leader. We have heard much about what this election has meant for black people, and all who love humanity are rejoicing for them. Yet Obama has also brought a great gift to white America, and we all stand taller and feel better about ourselves because “we have overcome.” After the election, many people remarked how people of different races were making more eye contact and smiling at each other, as if seeing each other for the first time. African Americans feel seen by whites in a new way, because one of their own has been recognized and accepted by the larger society.

A Practical Visionary and Brilliant Organizer

Obama has emerged as a brilliant and inspired orator, gifted strategic thinker and champion organizer. It is interesting to note that in the early days, when people would ask, “Well, how do we know you are competent to be president?” he would say, “Watch how I run my campaign.” The world has watched and been awed by what he has accomplished, starting with nothing but a clear vision of what he wanted to share with the American people, and then building the most innovative and powerful campaign in modern political history. He brought millions into the electoral process, and was supported by small donations from millions of people. He said he began with “little more than faith in the American people, and that faith has been justified.”

A brilliant organizing ability is one of the signatures of the new, spiritual energy that is flowing into the world in this cycle, which grounds idealism in practical solutions. This energy, calling forth Spirit from within matter, reorders the world to allow for a greater circulation of resources, love and creativity to every part of the planet. The economic cleansing currently underway paves the way for an eventual reordering with greater integrity and fairness in our financial systems. As a prime example of a “practical visionary,” Obama is the one most qualified to carry this forward because he thinks outside the box, sees whole systems, and is pro-active, focusing on opportunities as they arise.

How We Can Help Obama

As Obama says, this will be a long journey, and it will not be easy. Like all of us, he has personal flaws to overcome. But we can all help him by supporting his initiatives when they are moving in the right direction. As President Franklin Roosevelt famously told labor leaders who were trying to convince him to support the Lehman act, “Gentlemen, you have totally convinced me that you are right. Now go out there into the world and force me to do it.” Obama needs the movement that elected him to stay supportive and keep up popular pressure so he can enact his agenda.

We need to continue to meditate and pray for him, seeing him, his family and all of his team surrounded in light and protected. We can ask that he align more fully with the Soul of our nation so that his work will express the spiritual purpose of The United States and fulfill its higher destiny as a beacon of wisdom and compassion to the world.

Obama Family's Thanksgiving Food Drive Visit (SLIDESHOW, VIDEO) (November 26, 2008)

Obama reassures nervous nation on ailing economy (November 26, 2008)
CHICAGO — President-elect Barack Obama sought to reassure the nation and nervous holiday shoppers about the ailing economy Wednesday as beleaguered stores braced for their most important month of the year."Help is on the way," he proclaimed at his third news briefing on the economy this week. Fifty-five days away from taking office, he declared he would have an economic plan ready for action "starting day one."Investors' improved spirits kept pace. The Dow Jones industrials climbed 247 points, marking the first time since last spring that the average had risen for four straight sessions. To help with ideas from outside the White House, Obama announced he was forming a new team of advisers with former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker as the head."There is no doubt that during tough economic times family budgets are going to be pinched," Obama said. "I think it is important for the American people, though, to have confidence that we've gone through recessions before, we've gone through difficult times before, that my administration intends to get this economy back on track." Obama's green start (23 November 2008)
Hope of early action on climate change as US president-elect prepares two bills to cut pollution and kick-start a clean energy revolution -- Barack Obama and congressional leaders are preparing rapid legislation to cut US emissions that cause global warming and to kick-start a clean energy revolution. Two bills are to be introduced as soon as the President-elect takes office in January. One will provide $15bn (£10.1bn) a year to encourage innovation in renewable energies as part of a thorough overhaul of the highly polluting US energy system. The other will pave the way to setting up a system of tradable emissions permits to combat global warming. The moves, to be taken quicker than expected, will galvanise top-level international negotiations on a new climate treaty that reopens in Poznan, Poland, next week, and will greatly boost attempts to bring in a "green new deal" as the best way out of the financial crisis.Yesterday – as exclusively predicted in The Independent on Sunday three weeks ago – Mr Obama took the first steps towards creating green jobs, a crucial element of the proposed deal, as a top priority for his forthcoming administration. In his weekly radio address, he announced that he has ordered his advisers to produce an economic recovery plan that will create 2.5 million new jobs in two years by building windfarms, making solar panels and fuel-efficient cars, as well as in modernising schools and re-building crumbling infrastructure. Senior Democratic sources added that the President-elect had picked Timothy Geithner, head of the New york Federal Reserve Bank to be his Treasury Secretary. "We are facing a sea change," said Barbara Boxer, the Democratic head of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, of the two new bills. "Instead of denial we will have resolve; instead of procrastination we will have action. The time to start is now."The energy bill is expected to pass rapidly through the houses of Congress – in both of which the Democrats will have increased majorities – with some experts expecting it to become law by the summer. Sources close to the rapidly forming Obama administration say that it will include tax breaks to encourage wind, solar and other renewable energies, and the creation of a grid to deliver their electricity effectively. There will also be incentives for consumers to buy fuel-efficient cars, and for householders and businesses to conserve energy. CLIP

2012: From the Mayan Elders Themselves

I just finished watching a fascinating video interview with a guy who has spent much of his last 35 years with indigenous people around the world. His name is Drunvalo Melchizedek. His take on 2012 is different from many others: he says no one has yet gotten the story right because they haven’t asked the Mayans themselves. He’s met with the Mayan Elders (as well as Hopi Elders who share nearly identical prophecies).

Here’s what Drunvalo Melchizedek has to say.

1] Although Dec 21, 2012 is the date of the end of the age in the Mayan calendar it does not mean anything spectacular is going to happen on that exact date.

2] The Mayan elders say the calender foretells Earth changes and changes in consciousness AND that they occur within a seven-year period of time around 2012.

3] When does (did) the seven-year period start? The Hopis’ prophecy stated the major changes would start when a ”large blue star” appears.

4] On October 24, 2007 “Comet 17P/Holmes shocked astronomers on Oct. 24, 2007, with a spectacular eruption. In less than 24 hours, the 17th magnitude comet brightened by a factor of nearly a million, becoming a naked-eye object in the evening sky. By mid-November the expanding comet was the largest object in the solar system–bigger even than the Sun.

5] Hopi and Mayan Elders met and agreed Comet Holmes was the star foretold in their prophecies. The seven year period has begun.

6] What is the biggest change in this seven years? A magnetic pole shift followed shortly by a physical pole shift. A physical pole shift is what destroyed Atlantis 13,000 years ago. Similarly, this would be a “big deal” today. Certainly it would qualify as Yogananda’s “you have no idea what a catastrophe is coming” event.

7] The Hopis are joining with other indigenous peoples in Arizona in April 2009 to perform a sacred welcoming ceremony for our space ancestors.

8] The Mayan Elders are currently writing a book to set the record straight on the Mayan calandar/prophecies.

Full 52 minutes Interview with Drunvalo (A REALLY fascinating and MUST watch interview!)

Drunvalo Melchizedek talks about the purpose of the Hopi and Mayan prophecies and what is in store with the 2012 transitions.

You can read an account of the Hopi prophecies from a 1963 book by Frank Waters here. (MOST interesting is you've never seen them)

NOTE from Jean: In the full interview above, Drunvalo talks about the current increasing earthquake activity that is to lead to both a magnetic pole shift (now in progress) immediately followed by a physical pole shift. So I searched relevant data to substantiate this claim and found this...

EarthQuake Activity Increasing
We know that increased sea water temperatures , increased volcanism and increased earthquake activity means something is happening to our earth; NOW. (...) Earthquake History: There have been a lot of posts recently that imply a sudden increase in earthquake activity. Here are some statistics going back to 1970. With each passing decade (over the last 30 years), the number of earthquakes worldwide has been increasing progressively. For example, in 1970 there were only 4,139; but last year there were 23,575. -- Pretty scary stuff! Serpent of Light: Beyond 2012 by Drunvalo Melchizedek
Every 13,000 years on Earth a sacred and secret event takes place that changes everything. Mother Earth's Kundalini energy emerges from its resting place in the planet's core and moves like a snake across the surface of our world. Once at home in ancient Lemuria, it moved to Atlantis, then to the Himalayan mountains of India and Tibet, and with every relocation changed our idea of what spiritual means. And gender. And heart. This time, with much difficulty, the "Serpent of Light" has moved to the Andes Mountains of Chile and Peru. Multi-dimensional, multi-disciplined and multi-lived, for the first time in this book, Drunvalo begins to tell his stories of 35 years spent in service to Mother Earth. Follow him around the world as he follows the guidance of Ascended Masters, his two spheres of light, and his own inner growing knowledge. His story is a living string of ceremonies to help heal hearts, align energies, right ancient imbalances, and balance the living Earth's Unity Consciousness Grid-in short to increase our awareness of the indivisibility of life in the universe. We are all-rocks and people and interdimensional beings-one!" Life may seem to be business as usual, but it is not. We are changing fast ... Remember this for life is going to present stranger things to you in your lifetime, and they all have meaning and purpose ... Only Mother Earth and ancient Maya know what's going to happen." - from "Serpent of Light".

A Real Life Spiritual Adventure Story, January 27, 2008

By Bani Sodermark (65632 Karlstad, Sweden)
It is hard to do justice to this spiritual adventure story. Words seem totally inadequate.

That we have depleted and vandalized the Earth's resources in over a few decades is a well known fact, as we grapple with issues like greenhouse gases and global warming. However, there are other facets of our lovely planet that we haven't yet been made aware of, at a global level. The 'Serpent of Light' is one such. Simply put, it is the Spirit of the Earth. Legend has it that it moves every 13,000 years from its resting place to another. The area that the Serpent rests in, gives birth to great scholars and thinkers because of the heightened energies. The movement of the Serpent, according to this book, appears to have taken place recently, (in accordance with the dawning of the Aquarian Age) as it moved from its latest home, high up in the Himalayas to its present resting place, somewhere between Peru and Chile. This shift in the Earth's energy was predicted by the Mayans about 13,000 years ago. Anchoring this energy properly in its present home has involved a concerted effort worldwide at different levels of consciousness. In this book, Drunvalo Melchizedek talks of the work in which he himself has played a major part.

For the first time in my reading, I find a spiritual action story. Coincidences take place so often that one is surprised that one can be surprised at all, that one has not got hardened to the rapid turn of events. Where, for instance, people whom you don't know at all, but are supposed to meet, turn up out of the blue, where you happen to be, to participate in a complex ceremony that required their presence. Where a group of people, drawn from all over the globe, come together to perform intricate rites, and the joy and exhilaration they generate together, as these ancient rituals are conducted, as the consciousness of native American tribes who have been wiped out, are resurrected from the Nether Worlds. The sense of an unceasing party, full of wonderful surprises comes through very vividly in this book.

Drunvalo mentions, also in some detail, his role in awakening and balancing the Goddess Consciousness in the late 1980's. In this, as in all his other ventures, he is mentored by Thoth and the angels. The book concludes with the story of his ongoing interaction with the Maori from New Zealand.

The author attributes his success in getting across to the ancient tribes of the world, to his own heart based perception, heightened after years of doing the Mer Ka Ba meditation. He mentions a time during one of the ceremonies which focused on healing the heart chakra, with a globally drawn group of participants, when one of them said that she sensed (at the end of the ceremony) that 'the Tower of Babel was shattered to splinters'.

This book has moved me as very few have. It contains many nuggets of badly needed esoteric wisdom within its 270 odd pages, pages that bear testimony to a way of life, devoted to living in the eternal Now with total trust of being provided for. It is not meant to be analyzed or understood, for it speaks directly to the part of us that knows all things and holds its wisdom in silence, the human heart. For those of us who are acquainted with Drunvalo, this book is some sort of an extension and elaboration of his earlier books, 'Ancient Secrets of the Flower of Life' (Vol. I and II) and 'Living in the Heart'., and written in his characteristically humorous, self effacing style. All in all: Advanced Wisdom, very readable, and highly recommended for all, especially during these times of uncertainty, confusion and doubt.

With the countdown to 2012 now in full force, the new book by spiritual teacher Drunvalo Melchizedek could not have arrived in a more timely manner. Instead of focusing on the doom and gloom that other authors proffer, author Melchizedek has chosen instead to focus instead upon the Kundalini energy pattern of the planet from the years 1949 to 2012 and beyond. Every 13,000 years, the Precession of the Equinoxes occurs, and this associated energy, as the author points out, always attaches itself to a particular point on the planet, where it remains until the next Precession 13,000 years later. None of this has anything to do with the global warming scam, and quite frankly, it is a part of our own spiritual heritage. In the book’s 270 pages, the author gives the complete details as to what this energy is, how it operates, and perhaps most importantly, how it affects the spirituality and consciousness of the human race. The author includes many fascinating details, which involve characters from the Maya, something called the Great White Pyramid of Tibet, and many individuals with whom he has crossed paths throughout the many years he has dedicated to various spiritual operations. The tale of this Tibetan pyramid is itself fascinating, as with the one’s in Egypt, there were no writings, hieroglyphics, or any bas-relief artwork found inside. The single image found inside was located high up in the rafters, which was a central symbol of sacred geometry – a design known as The Flower of Life. This ‘white’ pyramid was known as the Nakkal Pyramid, which is rather curious, as the Nakkals were known to be the high-priests of Atlantis. But why would a reference to the lost continent of Atlantis show up, high in the Himalaya Mountains of Tibet? An angelic vision promised the author that, “in the future, all will be revealed to you.” This encounter set off a journey of worldwide discovery that continues to this very day. This journey begins with Melchizedek explaining the Unity Consciousness Grid that envelopes the globe like a sort of a spiritual net. It connects 83,000 sacred sites the world over, and this, as the author points out, is the basis of the great spiritual awakening that has been occurring for the past twenty years or so, since the Harmonic Convergence of the summer of 1987. (...) This is the best book that I have found which features the most reasonable explanation of the coming 2012-related Earth changes, and one that the adepts of the various Mystery Schools have doubtlessly tried to keep secret from the general population, whom they look upon with great contempt. They believe we are not worthy of receiving this information. Let us all thank and pay tribute to our own spiritual ancestors, who have brought us advanced souls in the personages of Drunvalo Melchizedek, and many others just like him! We will capture this knowledge for our own development, in spite of those working against us. There have been great forces working against us spiritual light workers, which have sought to make us believe we are separated and alone, instead of the truth, which is that we are all connected and together as a single oversoul. Subject: Boundless Appreciation

Dear Friends,

We are extraordinary beings of immense and profound potential. The fact that we breathe and have life is the most amazing miracle in itself. We also have the intrinsic nature of conscious self awareness. We can think, feel and interact with our world with infinite creativity to expand our reality beyond belief. Through our imagination alone, we can perceive and conceive the most fascinating opportunities to experience the grandness of life.  Such is our heritage and our destiny.

On a fundamental level, each moment is precious. Beginning with our bodies, every breath and heartbeat engages the process of countless physiological interactions with trillions of cells, each interacting with incredible accuracy and unbelievable wisdom with the whole.  And with perhaps little more than a brief acknowledgement, this continues for a lifetime without much notice on our part.

The physical body allows us to move about our day, interacting with our world and creating through our many diverse choices. We can express the depths of our heart with unconditional love or feel the intense pain of separation through the allowance of fear and doubt. Each step and experience lets us know the exact reflection of our choices. Just as in the cells of our body, with every interaction we comprehend how our individual choices combine and affect the whole. It is in this awakening conscious recognition we realize the oneness that is ever present in our reality – we are all interconnected and interdependent and a part of all creation itself.

Being cognizant of the beauty and astonishing perfection within each moment restores our awareness on what is really important in life. When we come from the place of wholeness and wisdom, our choices reflect and create a world that embraces each diverse facet with unconditional equality. Beginning with our own contributions, we easily and joyfully acknowledge and encourage this unlimited potential in others as well.

Life is simple when we come from our heart with boundless appreciation for Life itself.

SynEarth: News of the Best of Times and the Worst of Times—Living in Paradox

Our beliefs

We believe that we must learn to work together. This means we must become synergic humans. Synergy means working together—operating together as in Co-Operation — laboring together as in Co-Laboration — acting together as in Co-Action. The goal of synergic union is to accomplish a larger or more difficult task than can be accomplished by individuals working separately. We are committed to a world where I win, you win, others win and the Earth wins. Win-Win-Win-Win.

We believe there are three types of humans to be found in our present world. Which type you are depends on what you believe about how the world works.

Adversaries believe there is not enough for everyone and only the physically strong will survive. They believe humans are coercively dependent on others, and they best understand the language of force.

Neutralists believe there is enough for everyone, if only you work hard enough and take care of yourself. They believe humans are financial independent and should be self-sufficient unless they are too lazy or defective. They best understand the language of money.

And, finally a new type of human is still emerging. Synergists believe there is enough for everyone but only if we work together and act responsibly. They believe humans are interdependent and can only obtain sufficiency by working together as community. Synergists best understand the language of love.

But, to be successful in our present world, the synergist must understand all three languages and know when to use them. Synergists must sometimes use the language of force, and sometimes the language of money, it depends on whom they are talking to. However, when synergists are seeking allies—when synergists are seeking to build community—they must speak the language of love.

We believe that you should, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." What is it that most of us want others to do unto us? Synergic scientists answer this question as follows: Help and support others as you would wish them to help and support you. Or, more simply, "Treat others the way they want to be treated."

Synergists are trying to heal the wounds inflected by those who don't understand how the world could work. This then is the essential challenge to the synergists. Can we work together and act responsibly in time to save our ourselves on this planet? ... Only by helping each other.

We are Volunteers

All of us are trying to make the world better for all LIFE. The pages of the are available to all humanity without charge or condition. Hopefully, those who can will decide to help us to help them. If we receive donations of time and resources, we can be more effective in our mission.

From: Kathy Roberts (
Subject: Interview With James Gilliland of ECETI
Date: 20 Nov 2008

Hi James, I know it's been awhile but I am still interested in your story. Given your schedule, here are the questions I wanted to ask you. When you have time, answer them and I'll post. Thank you for your time.

I want to stay as open minded about this as I can because, when I was younger, I believe I saw something not from this world. So let me try.

You don't believe we are alone on earth. Why?

Because as a child I saw things in the heavens that had no rational explanation than the obvious. They zig zagged, stopped, became very bright then speed off at speeds nothing on earth could match. I also had encounters while living in Apple Valley a small desert town but not with the bug eyed grays they were beings more like us often called Nordics.

For a lack of a better term, is all extraterrestrial activity airborne, in other words seen as flying crafts of some sort, or are there biological beings on earth?

We have had landings here at ECETI and filmed some landing on the mountain and morphing into as many as three ships defying all known physics. These ships are very large and traversed sheer lava cliffs, glaciers and were in a wilderness area where no vehicles are allowed. They are bases underground and in the oceans in many areas on the planet and some have been walking among us.

Are they identifiable or do they look human?

You would not know some of them unless you could sense energies or frequencies, some could not walk among us as we are too judgmental fearful and aggressive.

What is their purpose here?

Their purpose here depends on which group. Some are here for genetic experiments; these are low level contacts. Others are just observing. Then there are those who are here to assist us in our evolution. We are about to take a quantum leap in evolution, a shift in which we will need all the help we can get.

Have you encountered a being?

Yes on many occasions.

Tell me about that.

I have encountered many beings. Most people are not ready for this information. Some are our ancestors returning. They are the builders of the great temples. Others are from distant galaxies, some are from different dimensions, different times. It is rather complex. Some look like us, some look rather bizarre, yet if we master judgement and fear we will often see a very evolved soul.

Hollywood has portrayed ETs as either benevolent, or out to destroy the planet. Granted that's theatrics but what are your thoughts?

I think Hollywood has done the universe and humanity a grave injustice which is why I put out the movie Contact Has Begun - - to clear the air (More in this most interesting 21 minute intro to Contact Has Begun- A MUST watch!). Contact with Jody Foster was a good movie concerning the ultradimensional contacts. ET and Cocoon were also nice but the rest of them showing ETs coming to eat and conquer us turning us into human pilaf or fertilizer especially the movie Signs are just creating fear and separation making it harder to drop the fear and aggression which is necessary before we can join the rest of the universe in peace. The ships and those flying them have been around for thousands of years. It is recorded in cave drawings, petroglyphs, Frescos and most ancient holy books especially the Vedic texts which give clear and accurate accounts of the different types of ships. Some are physical, some energy, others are magnetized light. Then there are Merkabas pure consciousness and energy ships. Have they conquered and eaten us?

Your project is called Enlightened Contact with Extraterrestrial Intelligence (ECETI). What is your premise?

The premise is if you are going to contact extremely advanced beings we have to advance ourselves and rise to the occasion. Most are very spiritually and technologically advanced and there is no reason to contact someone of ill intent, closed minded and lacking in heart. It takes pure intent, an open mind and loving heart to make contact - which will address the question why they don't land on the White House Lawn.

You had a near-death experience from drowning that you say enlightened you. What happened?

I went through the usual tunnel; ended up in a golden light of pure bliss. Had a real eye opener as to the true nature of God. It is not what we are taught, not a he or a she rather than a loving joyous, blissful, non-judging consciousness and energy. You become the light, yet there is a greater light surrounding you. You are unique, yet one which most will not understand unless they have been there.

You were drawn to your ranch in Trout Lake, Washington. Numerous UFO sightings have been reported there. What exactly is happening?

Trout Lake, Washington is now an internationally known UFO hotspot. We call it paranormal central. It is a vortex and the veils between worlds are very thin here. We see the ships almost nightly sometimes 50 to 100 on a good night. Every once in a while we are skunked and the skies are empty. We use Heavens Above a satellite and space station tracking site to check and make sure we are not seeing man made objects. This of course does not rule out back engineered craft of our own.

How often are there sightings?

Clear skies and a dark moon are the best times; given the right conditions almost nightly.

When was the most recent?

Last night a large triangle ship flew over, we used night vision to identify it. Eight witnesses were present. There were 21 other sightings 3 could have been satellites. There have been thousands of witnesses, some were pilots, aerospace engineers, Air Force base commanders, many with PHDs from all walks of life.

There's a place in central Turkey that also claims numerous sightings. It has become a tourist attraction complete with a museum. Do you think there are focal points for this kind of activity?

Yes, recently on YouTube there were three large craft that flew over a news reporter in Turkey, they filmed it. There are pyramids in Turkey with elaborate tunnels just now being discovered.

One question asked by many, with all the technology of today, cameras that can shoot aircraft in flight, why has no one photographed a UFO that wasn't blurry or anything more than a dot in a photo?

They have you just don't hear about it. I have seen many clear pictures. One of the problems is with the ships themselves and the propulsion systems. Many of the ships are not fully materialized, others have a coronal field or discharge that blurs the photos

Are sightings on the rise?

Sightings are on the rise, people around the world are seeing and filming them. Mexico has filmed literally thousands of ships flying over major cities. We have this footage in the movie Contact Has Begun. The Mexican Air Force recently released some of the footage. Almost all countries are releasing their ufo files and the only one holding out is the USA. Why? Could it be we have been back-engineering them since the forties, have fuel-less energy technologies? Someone is suppressing this from coming forward. Knowing the reason why tells us who.

What will it take for people to accept that there are beings from other worlds and not something dismissed by some as folklore or hoaxes?

There is enough evidence out there for any rational mind to come to the conclusion we are not alone, never have been. Waiting for the authorities to give this information to you will just leave you in ignorance. People have to want to know, do their own research. You cannot instill want into another or prove anything to someone who does not want proof—they only want to stay in their pre-approved government stamped box. Contact on a mass scale is destiny, despite the individual and collective denial. There shall come a day when they will come, hover and just sit. It has already happened in some countries. What will the talking heads say then? It is Venus, a weather balloon.

What are your thoughts on what the government really knows.

Depends of which department; it is all on a need to know basis and compartmentalized. Those in the black projects know most of the story yet they are not in contact with the spiritually and technologically advanced beings. You have to rise to the occasion. Many presidents and other top officials have seen the ships. Astronauts as well. Don't expect anything from NASA or SETI. They are censored and their hands are tied. It is not good business to have a man with a 200 dollar Sony camcorder have better footage and evidence than they do.

People travel to your ranch with the hopes to glimpse a sighting. How many walk away satisfied?

The greater majority see something they cannot fit into any known craft. Every once in a while we have a slow night

Have you ever hosted skeptics who walked away believers?

Yes, there have been many skeptics some of which worked in alphabet agencies, aerospace industries and skunk works. Some have gone on Coast to Coast and testified. Personally I would rather not work with skeptics, discerning minds yes, closed minds no. They can often kill the energy and upset those who are serious in finding out the truth for themselves which I highly encourage. I tell people Do not take my word for it... Have your own experience... Do your own investigation.

Who can visit your ranch and what do they need to do?

Go to the website all the information is there. or call 509 395 2092. All are welcome, there is a no drug, no dog policy and those who come with pure intent, an open mind and loving heart have the best experience. There is a lot more than just seeing them, there is an energy exchange as well.
