Looking for Solutions Series #1: Change IS possible!

Hello everysoul!

I made a conscious decision this week to focus essentially on a sampling of positive solutions to some of our ongoing major world crises. I'm quite certain most of you will welcome this as a refreshing change to the usual fare of dastardly perplexing stuff I gather from the vast majority of emails I receive.

Now it's up to you to do something useful with what I found and even encourage me to continue with more instalments of this new "Looking for Solutions" series by providing me with other bits of such encouraging news and stimulating perspectives that may come to your attention.

Light, Love and Peace will prevail... :-D

In a recent email discussion following a subscriber's suggestion that Peak oil is a hoax and that there are allegedly huge secret undisclosed oil reserves, I made the following observations that you may be interested to review as well:

"Whether there are undisclosed oil deposits is now irrelevant because we know all too well that a fairly good portion of the critical man-made global warming problem we face (something diehard skeptics have denied for years) is due to our elite-driven dependence on oil as a source of energy. The sooner lack of oil availability will impact our global economy and force our shortsighted civilization to implement on a massive scale alternative means of transportation, the better. Therefore if any such gigantic oil reserves exist, thank God that they've kept them secret! We cannot have more oil! We need truly carbon neutral sources of energy. And on that aspect, if the claims are for real that the US and cabal-led black projects have successfully managed to retro-engineer ET technology, I'd say the time is coming when these new technologies—provided they cannot create more harm than good in case they fall into the wrong hands—must be made public and massively implemented to kick our oil addiction and help save our environment. But even then, if all the brilliant new technologies that have been created (like water as fuel for cars) by lone inventors could be supported instead of blocked by all governments and big oil corporations, we could likewise go green much more quickly."

Incidentally, Matthew had this to say in his November 1, 2005 message about this issue: "This is a contrived story to create more wealth for the greedy and more fear in those already despairing. The “peak oil” term has been given to an effort that has achieved its dark intent well (...) Even with the Illuminati’s suppression of “free energy” technologies, car manufacturers are beginning to produce “hybrid” vehicles; and scientists and engineers in other areas are gearing up to reduce the need for oil. True, you can say that this is only good business sense, but it is important nevertheless because oil is Earth’s blood and its extraction must stop. CLIP

There was also another comment made by the same subscriber who doubt that nearly all extraterrestrial civilizations have benevolent aims toward us, and I was also led to offer the following perspective on this:

"If we could have the slightest idea how much love they are capable of, we would not let fear intrude between them and us. The fact that some technologically advanced groups in this galaxy and others may have contacted and helped the Earth Cabal doesn't change the fact to me that the vast majority of souls from other planets and realms of existence are utterly benevolent and following in their hearts and souls God's Will and serving it as One with All That Is. Suzy Ward, who, for the most part, is a reliable source for me, also indicated in her 4rth book that some so-called "reptilian" aliens have strayed from the Light. Yet the combined forces of the "Star Nations" are sufficient to keep at bay the worst ET offenders so that our own freewill evolutionary reality is not unduly manipulated or simply destroyed by them. And it falls to reason IMHO that for freewill to be an actual test of spiritual discernment and a true mettle-testing learning experience, some measure of unenlightened ET influence would be allowed, for otherwise the spectrum of choices for us to make would not be complete. In short, I'm sure that, at soul level, we have agreed to being exposed to all of this. Once we have made it out of the dampening 3rd environment we are still stuck in, it will become much clearer for all those who are now striving to reach for the Light within and spread it beyond themselves."

"I quote: "The speed at which mankind is using and abusing the Earth's resources is putting humanity's survival at risk, scientists have said." Overall, this is true. But you or I cutting down one dying tree is hardly the same as a mega corporation logging multi-acres for profit. You or I driving a 4-cylinder car a few kilometers a day is hardly the same as a mega corporation with a gigantic fleet of huge trucks bringing lettuce from distant parts when the farmer near us grows the same lettuce. For profit. I could go on at length but you get the picture. The problem is not mankind, but the constant drive for profit."

"The Global Environment Outlook: environment for development (GEO-4) report is published in what may prove to be a remarkable year-a year when humanity faced up to the scale and pace of environmental degradation with a new sense of realism and honesty matched by firm, decisive and above all, imaginative action. It highlights the unprecedented environmental changes we face today and which we have to address together. These changes include climate change, land degradation, collapse of fisheries, biodiversity loss, and emergence of diseases and pests, among others. As society, we have the responsibility to tackle these and the development challenges we face. The trigger propelling countries and communities towards a rediscovery of collective responsibility is the most overarching challenge of this generation: climate change. ...The difference between this GEO and the third report, which was released in 2002, is that claims and counter claims over climate change are in many ways over. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has put a full stop behind the science of whether human actions are impacting the atmosphere and clarified the likely impacts-impacts not in a far away future but within the lifetime of our generation. The challenge now is not whether climate change is happening or whether it should be addressed. The challenge now is to bring over 190 nations together in common cause. The prize is not just a reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases, it is a comprehensive re-engagement with core objectives and principles of sustainable development. For climate change, by its very nature cannot be compartmentalized into one ministerial portfolio, a single-line entry in corporate business plans or a sole area of NGO activism. Climate change, while firmly an environmental issue is also an environmental threat that impacts on every facet of government and public life - from finance and planning to agriculture, health, employment and transport. If both sides of the climate coin can be addressed-emission reductions and adaptation - then perhaps many of the other sustainability challenges can also be addressed comprehensively, cohesively and with a long-term lens rather than in the segmented, piecemeal and short-sighted ways of the past."

- Achim Steiner on the State of the Environment (10.27.07)

"Fear is at the core of the human condition on this planet. Those from other worlds recognize our situation and are working to help change it. However, until we take the initiative to rise above a civilization that is based on fear, we will not be welcomed into the cosmos. The vast majority of other star civilizations operate from a basis of love (Remember my definition of fear.). Our world has been quarantined so we would not export the darkness of fear to other worlds. It is time to throw off the shackles of fear. Yes, we have been enslaved by off-planet beings who operate in conjunction with elitists, all of whom have chosen to experience this lifetime withdrawn from the light. Yes, there have been agreements between extraterrestrial civilizations and the controllers of this planet. Yes, yes, yes, all that we have been told about those who operate in conjunction with the dark is most likely true (Again I have not experienced it first hand). However, keep in mind that they are doing you and me a great service by showing us that which we can choose to reject. Numerous celestials and star people have told us that Earth is already transitioning. We have been invited to come along. We need only set aside our fears and embrace love, learn to live at a higher level of consciousness. I believe that one of the factors to enable us to do this is that we must first recognize that our lives are dominated by fears, that we are surrounded by fearful people, controlled by those who use fear and who wish to keep us from ascending with Earth.

Close encounters of the Turkish kind (Oct 31, 2007)
FETHIYE, Turkey - The alleged sighting of an unidentified flying object (UFO) has excited the Turkish media with pictures appearing in both sensationalistic tabloids and more serious broadsheet papers last week. The UFO was spotted in the Karakopru area of Sanliurfa province towards 4am on Wednesday. Filmed by an amateur videographer, the strangely glowing hexagonal ball of light hovered in the sky emitting red, green and white lights and moved both fast and erratically. After 15 minutes it disappeared without a trace. CLIP

Millions Of Americans With Kucinich On UFO Belief (Nov 1, 2007)
BOSTON (CBS) Do you believe in unidentified flying objects -- UFOs? A third of Americans do. One in seven claims to have seen one. And that group includes a presidential candidate. A lot of voters might find this the most believable claim they've heard in this race. But while politicians may laugh at UFO sightings, millions of Americans apparently aren't in on the joke. 34 percent of Americans say they believe in ghosts, according to a pre-Halloween poll by The Associated Press and Ipsos. That's the same proportion who believe in unidentified flying objects - or UFOs- exceeding the 19 percent who accept the existence of spells or witchcraft. Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich said he has seen a UFO, and he points out that, in more ways than one, he is not alone."You have to keep in mind that Jimmy Carter saw a UFO and also that more people in this country have seen UFOs than I think approve of George Bush's presidency," Kucinich said. Mayor Bloomberg: We Love New York, But Hate Your Government's Rainforest Destruction! (Nov 2, 2007)
New York City's (NYC) Department of Parks and Recreation is one of America's largest destroyers of rainforests, reports New York based Rainforest Relief. Parks and other NYC and state agencies including the Department of Transportation (DOT) and NYC Transit use hundreds of thousands of board feet of tropical hardwoods per year. New York City's use of ancient forest timbers comes at great expense to the Earth's biodiversity, ecosystems, climate and prospects for achieving global ecological sustainability... Please support Rainforest Relief's and NY Climate Action Group's campaign demanding that Mayor Bloomberg end NYC's use of tropical hardwoods. In order to protect ancient forests, the people who live there, and global climate; NYC purchases of timbers derived from ancient forests must be stopped and an important precedent set that all industrial scaled ancient forest logging must end forever. Peru Elders Gathering at Lake Titicaca (March 19-28, 2007)
Bridging the Americas - Peruvian Prophecy states that all the Americas were once united by a common spiritual tradition and leader, and that they will be again. The Americas were anciently united as Amaruca or Ameruca, meaning "Land of the Serpent" during the time when the serpent was the universal symbol of mystical wisdom and spiritual power. One legend states that North and South America were named after a culture bearer known historically as Aramu Muru or Amaru Meru, the "Serpent Meru." Aramu Muru came from the ancient continent of Mu with many power objects including the powerful Solar Disc that had previously hung in an important temple in his homeland. He also brought many sacred rites and symbols, like the Chacana (the "stair-step" cross) and after being taken by missionaries to all the four directions, served to unite the Americas into a homogenous spiritual culture. Legend states that Aramu Muru assisted many Native American tribes after they arrived in Peru during the time of the destructions of Mu and Old Red Land (Atlantis). He then united these tribes into a very advanced culture that proceeded to build many of the towering megalithic temples that still adorn the landscape of Peru today. Although most of us have forgotten our past connections, the spirit of Aramu Muru has never left us, and he continues to watch over all the Americas from his Illumination Temple located above Lake Titicaca. Moreover, the great Solar Disc of Mu is also said to still continue to exist and is currently located on the bottom of the sacred lake. Since 1992, when Pachacuti or "World Transformation" anciently prophesied by the Incas first commenced, Aramu Muru and the Illumination Temple have made their presence known again and the Solar Disc has begun emanating powerful streams of spiritual light that will eventually unite the Americas and uplift the entire world.Soon the prophecy will be complete; the Eagles (North America) will reunite with the Condors (South America) and the tribes will once again become one. Time of the Sixth Sun - A journey of Awakening (Trailer) MUST SEE!
SYNOPSIS: Time of the Sixth Sun is a multi-platform film project about the awakening and transformation of global consciousness, a witnessing of these times and the huge potential for change in the world …… in the way we relate to it and the way we live in it.In Time of the Sixth Sun, our protagonist, street poet Paradox, guides us on a quest to discover the meaning of 2012. Civilizations throughout the ages have indicated through ancient calendars and visions that 2012 will be a pinnacle time in the evolution of mankind. In the West, many are noticing an increase in life’s synchronicities and are experiencing time as speeding up. Scientists accept that global warming is a reality. Increasingly the world is seeking answers and the clock is ticking. We have been scouring the planet to speak to Tribal Elders, Wisdom Keepers, New Scientists, Spiritual Teachers and those offering Divine Guidance on what they have to say about these awesome times. Speakers include: Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Credo Mutwa, Don Alverto Taxo, Maestro Tlakaelel, Lynne Franks, Dr. Maseru Emoto, HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Geoff Stray, Dr. Manjir Samanta-Laughton,Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Carl Johan Calleman, Tom Kenyon, Carla Rueckert and many more. There’s never been more information at our disposal. From ancient tribal wisdom, Religious texts, myth, prophecy, new sciences, spiritual teachings and divine guidance. In the end, we all have to make the journey within and decide what is truth for each of us individually. What tools do we need to progress in our spiritual evolution? And if we are the creators of our reality, what is our highest vision for the future? Rather than our downfall, is 2012 not our greatest epiphany? ‘Life is Film - Man is Actor - God is Director’ (written on the back of a truck in India!) Ask most people in the street about 2012 and they’ll mutter something about the Olympics in Britain. Yes....and....what else does it mean to you?....this usually is met by a blank look because the majority of people don’t have a clue what awaits us in coming years. This pivotal time in the history of mankind is merely six years away and still NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT !! Why not? …..and so begins our ‘journey of awakening’. We listen to the myths & prophesies of the Wisdom Keepers from many traditions and the possibilities they present to transform our lives in the countdown to 2012. What is the truth behind earth changes? What are our sustainable choices for food, housing, energy and community living in the future? How do we link heaven and earth, with the creative and spiritual in our everyday lives? How can we be divine beings in human form? How do we learn to open up our dormant telepathic abilities? Who are the ‘new kids on the block’? Are they the face of a new, highly evolved race, the grandmothers & grandfathers of the future? Does the return of the Divine Feminine herald a return to partnership society bringing balance and harmony back into our relationship with the Earth? Are we moving from Gaia to Cosmic citizenship? These are some of the questions posed along the way.Sometimes magician, sometimes jester, Paradox challenges our belief systems on our quest for truth. He reveals the power of positive thought creation, constantly reflecting the ‘bigger picture’ and daring us to glimpse into the future to see how we can affect it by the choices we make. ‘Time of the Sixth Sun’ is a unique docudrama, entertaining, informative, accessible, visually rich and emotionally satisfying. Shot in fabulous locations with a stunning soundtrack, it promises to be one of the cinema highlights for 2007/2008. The DVD set has many bonus features including a Satsang Sofa, Prophecy Oracle, Channelling Room, 2012 Toolkit plus a Website Commitment for the next six years which is dedicated to recording the 2012 celebrations of indigenous communities, guaranteeing an evergreen life for the project . No End in Sight (Trailer) The Film That "Has The White House Spooked"
The first film of its kind to chronicle the reasons behind Iraq's descent into guerilla war, warlord rule, criminality and anarchy, 'No End in Sight' is a jaw-dropping, insider's tale of wholesale incompetence, recklessness and venality. Based on over 200 hours of footage, the film provides a candid retelling of the events following the fall of Baghdad in 2003 by high ranking officials such as former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, Ambassador Barbara Bodine (in charge of Baghdad during the Spring of 2003), Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, former Chief of Staff to Colin Powell, and General Jay Garner (in charge of the occupation of Iraq through May 2003), as well as Iraqi civilians, American soldiers and prominent analysts. 'No End in Sight' examines the manner in which the principal errors of U.S. policy – the use of insufficient troop levels, allowing the looting of Baghdad, the purging of professionals from the Iraqi government and the disbanding of the Iraqi military – largely created the insurgency and chaos that engulf Iraq today. How did a group of men with little or no military experience, knowledge of the Arab world or personal experience in Iraq come to make such flagrantly debilitating decisions? 'No End in Sight' dissects the people, issues and facts behind the Bush administration's decisions and their consequences on the ground to provide a powerful look into how arrogance and ignorance turned a military victory into a seemingly endless and deepening nightmare of a war.The film systematically dissects the Bush administration's Iraq policy decisions and their consequences, which now include 3,000 American deaths and 20,000 American wounded, Iraq on the brink of civil war, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilian deaths, the strengthening of Iran, the weakening of the U.S. military and economic costs of over $2 trillion. It marks the first time Americans will be allowed inside the White House, Pentagon and Baghdad’s Green Zone to understand for themselves the disintegration of Iraq.

Proposed Rulemaking on the Secure Flight Program
On August 23, 2007, Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) published a proposed rule entitled Secure Flight Program. Currently, aircraft operators perform passenger watch list matching using the Federal No Fly and Selectee Lists, as required under security directives issued by TSA following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Under the Secure Flight program, aircraft operators will be required to request certain information from passengers and transmit the information to TSA. Urge Canada to vote "YES" for nuclear disarmament at the UN (October 30, 2007)
There is an important meeting taking place right now at the United Nations to discuss nuclear disarmament, with voting on key resolutions scheduled to happen this week. I urge you to send your letter to Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier, calling on him to vote “YES”, and continue Canada’s tradition as a champion of nuclear disarmament.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About New Energy Science and Technology

How Long Can Congress Deny The Depression Crash? (November 2, 2007)
Over the two weeks, between U.S. Treasury Secretary Paulson's strange Oct. 15 announcement about a mysterious "Master Liquidity" scheme to save huge banks from huge losses, and Moody's Investors Service's Oct. 26 move to a massive international downgrade of bonds collateralized by mortgage securities, every economic sign has flashed the raw red of depression collapse underway. The U.S. dollar, after Paulson's giveaway announcement that the fear of bank collapses is abroad in his high financial circles, rapidly sank by another 5% against the euro (for example) within ten days. The Treasury's Oct. 16 report of net investments into/out of U.S. securities in August (Treasury International Capital Statistics, or TICS) was a shock that opened a view of the financial crash underway. One Royal Bank of Scotland economist quoted by the Financial Times called the report "a truly stunning TICS number, the likes of which I have never seen." The Treasury reported that there was a huge net outflow of $163 billion from U.S. securities in August, as everything but short-term U.S. T-bills (the flight to safety) was massively dumped. The U.S. mortgage-based bubble was where the junk, subprime, high-interest action was for banks and funds worldwide, blowing that bubble to $20 trillion proportions until it collapsed—and everybody had to dump the toxic crap. (...) The financial system is collapsing. Congress must act to put a "firewall"—a Homeowner and Bank Protection Act—between the financial collapse, and real households and the real economy. That opens the door to other emergency actions to invest in a new national economic infrastructure, to revive the industrial economy. Congressional leaders who are denying this systemic collapse, and basing their response to the foreclosure crisis on that denial, will have to eat their words—and soon.

Thousands Protest Iraq War in Nationwide Marches
Jim Doyle and Susan Sward of The San Francisco Chronicle report: "On cue from a bullhorn's blast, thousands of protesters fell to the pavement on Market Street in a symbolic 'die-in' Saturday as part of a coordinated protest staged in cities across the country against the war in Iraq."

Where Have All the Protests Gone? (October 30, 2007)
As the occupation of Iraq continues, the number and magnitude of demonstrations appear to be shrinking. What is happening to the protest culture of wars past? (...) However, over the years, unlike in the Vietnam era, the demonstrations shrank, and somehow the anxiety, the anger -- though it remained suspended somewhere in the American ether -- stopped manifesting itself so publicly, even as the war went on and on. Or put another way, perhaps the anger went deeper and turned inward, like a scouring agent. Perhaps it went all the way into what was left of an American belief system, into despair about the unresponsiveness of the government -- with paralyzing effect. As another potentially more disastrous war with Iran edges into sight, the response has been limited largely to what might be called the professional demonstrators. The surge of hope, of visual creativity, of spontaneous interaction, of the urge to turn out, that arose in those prewar demonstrations now seemed so long gone, replaced by a far more powerful sense that nothing anyone could do mattered in the least. (...) The rest of the march was, in essence, a police event, the demonstrators penned in by moveable metal barricades, "guarded" often by more police personnel than on-lookers. From the moment we began to march in the rain, the police presence was overwhelming, starting with a well-marked NYPD "Sky Watch" tower, a mobile tower that can be raised anywhere in which police observers can spy on you from behind a Darth Vader-style darkened window. In fact, we marchers were penned in by the police as we headed south for Foley Square, cut off, for instance, from the large cross street at 14th by a row of dismounted police using their motorcycles as a barricade. Police vehicles and police on foot moved slowly in front of the demonstration as well as behind it. Police even marched in the demonstration (though not as demonstrators). Essentially, it was, as all rallies and demonstrations now seem to be in our growing Homeland Security state-let, a police march.Led by a sizeable contingent of soldiers, vets, and military families, there were perhaps 10,000 marchers -- a rare occasion when my own rough estimate fit the normal police undercount -- on a dreary, rainy day, which is no small thing. (...) Add up all the people who did this in 11 cities nationwide, and the numbers aren't unimpressive. But with unending war, as well as perpetual death and destruction on the Bush administration menu, with the horizon darkened by the possibility of a strike against Iran, and a population which has turned its back on most of the above, it was, nonetheless, clearly underwhelming. War protests: Why no coverage? (October 30, 2007)
Newspapers have a duty to inform citizens about such democratic events. - Coordinated antiwar protests in at least 11 American cities this weekend raised anew an interesting question about the nature of news coverage: Are the media ignoring rallies against the Iraq war because of their low turnout or is the turnout dampened by the lack of news coverage? I find it unsettling that I even have to consider the question. That most Americans oppose the war in Iraq is well established. The latest CBS News poll, in mid-October, found 26 percent of those polled approved of the way the president is handling the war and 67 percent disapproved. It found that 45 percent said they'd only be willing to keep large numbers of US troops in Iraq "for less than a year." And an ABC News-Washington Post poll in late September found that 55 percent felt Democrats in Congress had not gone far enough in opposing the war. Granted, neither poll asked specifically about what this weekend's marchers wanted: An end to congressional funding for the war. Still, poll after poll has found substantial discontent with a war that ranks as the preeminent issue in the presidential campaign.Given that context, it seems remarkable to me that in some of the 11 cities in which protests were held – Boston and New York, for example – major news outlets treated this "National Day of Action" as though it did not exist. As far as I can tell, neither The New York Times nor The Boston Globe had so much as a news brief about the march in the days leading up to it. The day after, The Times, at least in its national edition, totally ignored the thousands who marched in New York and the tens of thousands who marched nationwide. The Globe relegated the news of 10,000 spirited citizens (including me) marching through Boston's rain-dampened streets to a short piece deep inside its metro section. ASSISI, Italy, Oct 8 (IPS) - About 200,000 people marched from Perugia to Assisi Sunday calling for "all human rights for all" and the end of wars. The 24km "peace march" between the two towns in central Italy concluded a "peace week" featuring some 400 initiatives on peace and human rights. These included the 7th assembly of the United Nations of the People in Perugia Oct. 5-6. "Peace and justice walk together" and "Water for all" were among some of the banners at the march. Many carried the famous "peace flags" that marked Italian protest against the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Participants also joined the "Stand Up!" action in line with the United Nations' "No Excuse" campaign to promote the Millennium Development Goals, a set of eight goals agreed in 2000 to cut poverty and to improve health and education. People in the rally sat and then stood up to urge the Italian government to allocate the 0.7 percent of gross national income (GNI) to foreign aid. The march, the 17th such, was started by peace activist Aldo Capitini in 1961. It is organised by Peace Roundtable, a coalition of Italian NGOs, unions, church groups and local administrations working for peace and solidarity. The march is the big event for the Italian peace movement, and is a sort of barometer of civil society activities. To mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to be celebrated in December, the theme of the march shifted this time from peace to human rights. CLIP

Inexorable March Toward War With Iran?
Joseph L. Galloway, writing for McClatchy Newspapers, says, "There were some things far more frightening this week than Halloween's small ghouls and goblins - and the scariest of all is the Bush administration's seemingly inexorable march toward military confrontation with Iran."

Attack Iran and you attack Russia (Oct 26, 2007)
The barely reported highlight of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Tehran for the Caspian Sea summit last week was a key face-to-face meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A high-level diplomatic source in Tehran tells Asia Times Online that essentially Putin and the Supreme Leader have agreed on a plan to nullify the George W Bush administration's relentless drive towards launching a preemptive attack, perhaps a tactical nuclear strike, against Iran. An American attack on Iran will be viewed by Moscow as an attack on Russia. (...) As if anyone needed to be reminded, the buck - or rial - stops with the Supreme Leader, whose last wish on earth is to furnish a pretext for the Bush administration to launch World War III. If Ahmadinejad now deviates from a carefully crafted strategic script, the Supreme Leader may simply get rid of him.

Attacking Iran for Israel?
Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is at her mushroom-cloud hyperbolic best, and this time Iran is the target. (...) The Israelis appear convinced they have extracted a promise from Bush and Cheney that they will help Israel nip Iran’s nuclear program in the bud before they leave office. Never mind that there is no evidence that the Iranian nuclear program is any more weapons-related than the one Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld persuaded President Gerald Ford to approve in 1976 for Westinghouse and General Electric to install for the Shah (price tag $6.4 billion). With 200-300 nuclear weapons in its arsenal, the Israelis enjoy a nuclear monopoly in the Middle East. They mean to keep that monopoly and are pressing for the U.S. to obliterate Iran’s fledgling nuclear program.Anyone aware of Iran’s ability to retaliate realizes this would bring disaster to the whole region and beyond. But this has not stopped Cheney and Bush before. CLIP

Low Morale Has U.S. Troops in Iraq Pretending to Patrol (October 26, 2007)
Morale among US soldiers in the country is so poor, many are simply parking their Humvees and pretending to be on patrol, called "search and avoid" missions. (...) Aliff said he participated in roughly 300 patrols. "We were hit by so many roadside bombs we became incredibly demoralized, so we decided the only way we wouldn't be blown up was to avoid driving around all the time.""So we would go find an open field and park, and call our base every hour to tell them we were searching for weapons caches in the fields and doing weapons patrols and everything was going fine," he said, adding, "All our enlisted people became very disenchanted with our chain of command." Aliff, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), refused to return to Iraq with his unit, which arrived in Kirkuk two weeks ago. "They've already lost a guy, and they are now fostering the sectarian violence by arming the Sunnis while supporting the Shi'ites politically ... classic divide and conquer."Aliff said he is set to be discharged by the military next month because they claim his PTSD "is untreatable by their doctors". According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the number of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans seeking treatment for PTSD increased nearly 70% in the 12 months ending on June 30.The nearly 50,000 VA-documented PTSD cases greatly exceed the 30,000 military personnel that the Pentagon officially classifies as wounded in both occupations.VA records show that mental health has become the second-largest area of illness for which veterans of the ongoing occupations are seeking treatment at VA hospitals and clinics. The total number of mental health cases among war veterans increased by 58%; from 63,767 on June 30, 2006, to 100,580 on June 30, 2007, according to the VA. CLIP

“War Criminal” Ex-MI6 Head Dearlove Confronted At Event (November 1, 2007) WITH VIDEO!
Author of the infamous Downing Street Memo and ex-MI6 head Sir Richard Dearlove was confronted and branded a “war criminal” by audience members who attended his talk at the London School of Economics last night, before being hounded out of the building - but subsequent media coverage of the event completely failed to mention the controversy. (...) We Are Change UK members and former MI5 officer Annie Machon tried in vain to get Dearlove to answer their questions, before branding him a “liar,” a “war criminal” and stating that he had the blood of over 600,000 dead Iraqis on his hands and was a “proxy mass murderer.”

Iraq, Afghan Vets at Risk for Suicides
Kimberly Hefling, reporting for The Associated Press, writes: "Mary Gallagher did not get a knock at the door from a military chaplain with news of her Marine husband's death in a faraway place. Instead, the Iraq war veteran committed suicide eight months after returning home. She is left wondering why."

Cashing In on Terror
Robert Scheer, writing for Truthdig, says: "Not to stoke any of the inane conspiracy theories running wild on the Internet, but if Osama bin Laden wasn't on the payroll of Lockheed Martin or some other large defense contractor, he deserves to have been. What a boondoggle 9/11 has been for the merchants of war, who this week announced yet another quarter of whopping profits made possible by George Bush's pretending to fight terrorism by throwing money at outdated Cold War-style weapons systems."

Arming the World: CBC News investigates (October 29, 2007)
A closer look at Canada's growing military export -- Canada's military exports have soared in the past decade, a CBC News investigation has found, yet the federal government has not released an annual report on exports of arms and high tech military goods for four years.Faced with a lack of information from Ottawa, CBC News did its own analysis, by constructing a database from figures kept by the Canada Border Services Agency.CBC News found that military exports rose 3.5 times between 2000 and 2006. And according to the most recent report by the U.S. Congressional Research Service, Canada was the sixth biggest supplier of arms to the world in 2006. (...) Critics say the government's silence is troubling at a time when the defence industry is growing so rapidly."We have not had data in four years - that is surprising to the point of astonishment," Janice Stein, director of the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto, told CBC News. (...) The situation has become an international embarrassment for Canada, Epps said. The Geneva-based Small Arms Survey recently dropped Canada's transparency rating because the reports aren't being released. "Canada's rating is 11 on the scale out of 20 this year, and the rating for Iran is 10.5. What does that say to you?" Epps said.Officials in the defence industry have no answers as to why the government is so far behind in releasing information about Canada's military exports. (...) "We've noted that there are a number of examples on a regular basis every year that Canada has exported to countries where there are persistent human rights violations," Epps said. "Examples include Colombia, Saudi Arabia, China and others, as well as countries that are at war, involved in hostilities. So we are concerned that Canada isn't meeting its own criteria when it's approving arms exports." CLIP

US Arms Exports Up, Oversight Down
"The Bush administration hopes to push through two license-free arms sales treaties before the end of this Senate session. Both would eliminate much of the oversight that governs international weapons trades. The treaties, one with the United Kingdom and one with Australia, exemplify a growing trend of weakening restrictions on arms exports, even as fears of weapons proliferation intensify worldwide."

The Military's Addiction To Oil (October 29, 2007) ABSOLUTELY, TERAGIGAMEGACATACLYSMIC HORROR!!!
(...) Military fuel does not come cheap. In 2002, at the Tactical Wheeled-Vehicle Conference, General Paul Kern, head of the Army Materiel Command, revealed that the actual cost of fuel, depending on how it gets delivered, can range anywhere from a low of $1 to a high of $400 per gallon. The average, he allowed, hovered around $300 a gallon. The Navy uses an enormous amount of fuel for its nuclear and non-nuclear aircraft carriers. The recently decommissioned USS Independence, at its top speed of 25 knots per hour, consumed 134 barrels of fuel an hour, or close to 5,600 gallons an hour. (The ship boasts 4.1 acres of flight deck and a crew of 2,300.) On its way to the Persian Gulf in 1991 2002, a trip that took fourteen days, the Independence went through two million gallons of fuel. Every four days, the ship took on an additional one million gallons of fuel, half of which went to supply the carrier's jets. According to the 2006 Navy Almanac, at the beginning of 2006, the Navy held an inventory of 285 combat and support ships, along with 4,000 planes and helicopters. (...) Of all the branches, the Air Force uses the most fuel. In 2006, for instance, the Air Force consumed nearly half of the DoD supply, 2.6 billion gallons of jet fuel, the same amount of fuel consumed from December 1941 to August 1945, during World War II. (...) A draft report prepared by the Bush administration for the United Nations, released in March 2007 (but due one year earlier, in January 2006) estimates that for the US the emissions of greenhouse gases will rise from 7.7 billion tons in 2000 to 9.2 billion tons in 2020--an increase of 19.5 percent. The report also says that the biggest source of the gases, about 84 percent, results from the burning of fossil fuels, chiefly oil, coal, and natural gas. Since the report includes no category for the military, it remains entirely silent on the amount of greenhouse gases that the military has pumped into the atmosphere, twenty-four hours a day, every day, for the past four years in Iraq, and for the past six years in Afghanistan. But, if the military, by its own admission, produced 28 billion tons of carbon in 2006, that is already higher than what the government projects for the entire nation in 2020. With Afghanistan and Bunker Fuel included, those 28 billion tons might in actually be 40 or 50 billion tons. ...YET IF YOU READ THE MANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS AT THE URL ABOVE, YOU'LL SEE THE AUTHOR APPARENTLY GOT ALL HIS NUMBERS WRONG!

AWOL GI's Have Been Going to Canada for Two Years
For over two years now, AWOL U.S. soldiers, sailors, and marines have been arriving in Canada, most of them after receiving orders to deploy (or re-deploy) to the Iraq War. So far, not one of them has been deported back to the U.S. Thousands of AWOL GI's are also in the U.S. The Pentagon estimates about 8,000. With proper counseling, some have been able to gain administrative discharges from the military.

Conscientious Objection - The GI Rights Hotline
A conscientious objector (CO) is a person who believes that it is wrong to kill another human being in war. The military defines conscientious objection as a "firm, fixed and sincere objection to war in any form or the bearing of arms" because of deeply-held moral, ethical, or religious beliefs. A lot of people in the military believe it's too late to be a CO now that they have enlisted, but the fact is many people realize they are opposed to participation in war after joining the military, and they are discharged as COs. Hundreds of U.S. Soldiers Emerge as Conscientious Objectors
(...) The Center on Conscience and War (CCW), which advises military personnel on CO discharges, reports that since the start of 2003--when many soldiers realized they might have to fight in the Iraq war--there has been a massive increase in the number of enlisted soldiers who have applied for CO status. (...) As it is in the British army, CO discharge is a long-established practice in the U.S. armed forces and always peaks in wartime. CCW says there were an estimated 200,000 COs in the Vietnam War, 4,300 in the Korean War, 37,000 in World War II and 3,500 in World War I. The military granted 111 COs from the army in the first Gulf War before putting a stop to the practice, resulting in 2,500 soldiers being sent to prison, says Bill Gavlin from the Center on Conscience and War, quoting a report from the Boston Globe newspaper.During that war, a number of U.S. COs in Camp LeJeune in North Carolina state were "beaten, harassed and treated horribly," Gavlin says. In some cases, COs were put on planes bound for Kuwait, told that they could not apply for CO status or that they could only apply after they'd already gone to war. As far as Gavlin knows, that type of treatment has not happened this time. But he has counseled service members who were harassed. For example, one woman was told that if she applied for CO status she would be court marshaled. It is not an offence to apply, and her superiors did it, Gavlin says, "to intimidate her." CLIP

THE GOOD WAR AND THOSE WHO REFUSED TO FIGHT IT is the story of 40,000 Americans who refused to shoulder weapons in "the good war" because their conscience wouldn't allow them to kill another human being. US generals 'will quit' if Bush orders Iran attack (February 25, 2007)
SOME of America's most senior military commanders are prepared to resign if the White House orders a military strike against Iran, according to highly placed defence and intelligence sources.Tension in the Gulf region has raised fears that an attack on Iran is becoming increasingly likely before President George Bush leaves office. The Sunday Times has learnt that up to five generals and admirals are willing to resign rather than approve what they consider would be a reckless attack."There are four or five generals and admirals we know of who would resign if Bush ordered an attack on Iran," a source with close ties to British intelligence said. "There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible." CLIP

A Petition to Investigate Torture
Americans and others around the world have been shocked by graphic images and descriptions of the abuse and torture of people held in the custody of the United States. While high U.S. officials have denied responsibility for these acts, they have also refused to allow independent investigations.Few human actions are more shameful and immoral than the abuse and torture of captives. They shatter and defile God's Image, as it is reflected in every human being. They violate the most basic ethical, moral, and religious principles. Abuse and torture are also serious crimes under the International Convention Against Torture, the U.S. War Crimes Act of 1996 and the U.S. Torture Act of 2000. Halting torture and other war crimes is the moral and legal responsibility not only of every government but of every citizen. Therefore, we, the undersigned, call upon our Congressional representatives to meet their responsibilities by ensuring a thorough, independent investigation of torture and other possible U.S. war crimes through all available means, including:
1) Congressional investigation (House and/or Senate Select Committee); 2) Appointment of a special counsel/special prosecutor by the Attorney General; and 3) Creation of an independent commission (similar to the 9/11 Commission).
Investigators should have the power and responsibility to follow up on whatever crimes they discover; they should have the power to subpoena evidence and testimony; and they should have an explicit responsibility to investigate the role of high government officials, refusing to offer impunity to anyone.Only by holding our highest government officials accountable for their actions can the American people and government restore a condition of mutual respect with the people whose citizens, cultures and religions have been so abused.* Signing and circulating this petition is an "affirmative measure" toward halting war crimes, a responsibility we all have under international law, as described in the Call to Resist the War in Iraq.

Evo Morales Announces: "No More Bolivian Soldiers to the SOA/WHINSEC!
We are very excited to share that on October 10th, 2007, President Evo Morales announced that Bolivia will gradually withdraw its military from the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), renamed in 2001 the School of the Americas (SOA). Bolivia is now the fifth country - after Costa Rica, Argentina, Uruguay and Venezuela - to formally announce a withdrawal from this brutal military training school."We will gradually withdraw until there are no Bolivian officers attending the School of the Americas" said Morales. Questioning the U.S. government foreign policy he noted that "they are teaching high ranking officers to confront their own people, to identify social movements as their enemies."This is a great victory for torture survivors, social movement leaders and human rights activists of Bolivia and the Americas. The SOA/WHINSEC has played a significant role in Bolivia's recent political history, Hugo Banzer Suarez, who ruled Bolivia from 1971-1978 under a brutal military dictatorship attended the school in 1956 and was later inducted into the school's "hall of fame" in 1988. The American Military's Cult Of Cruelty - By Robert Fisk (18 September, 2006)
In the week that George Bush took to fantasising that his blood-soaked "war on terror" would lead the 21st century into a "shining age of human liberty" I went through my mail bag to find a frightening letter addressed to me by an American veteran whose son is serving as a lieutenant colonel and medical doctor with US forces in Baghdad. Put simply, my American friend believes the change of military creed under the Bush administration--from that of "soldier" to that of "warrior"--is encouraging American troops to commit atrocities. From Abu Ghraib to Guantanamo to Bagram, to the battlefields of Iraq and to the "black" prisons of the CIA, humiliation and beatings, rape, anal rape and murder have now become so commonplace that each new outrage is creeping into the inside pages of our newspapers. My reporting notebooks are full of Afghan and Iraqi complaints of torture and beatings from August 2002, and then from 2003 to the present point. How, I keep asking myself, did this happen? Obviously, the trail leads to the top. But where did this cult of cruelty begin? CLIP

Rumsfeld Hit With Torture Lawsuit While In Paris (October 26, 2007)
Former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's jaunt to France was interrupted today by an unscheduled itinerary item -- he was slapped with a criminal complaint charging him with torture.Rumsfeld, in Paris for a discussion sponsored by the magazine Foreign Policy, was by tracked down by representatives of a coalition of international human rights groups, who informed the architect of the US invasion of Iraq that they had submitted a torture suit against him in French court. The filed documents allege that during his tenure, the former defense secretary "ordered and authorized" torture of detainees at both the American-run Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the US military's detainment facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The head of one of the groups responsible for bringing the charges, the US-based Center for Constitutional Rights, told RAW STORY today by phone that the suit was a long time coming. "We've been working on cornering Rumsfeld and getting him indicted somewhere going on three years now," said the Center's president, Michael Ratner. "Four days ago, we got confidential information he was going to be in France."Joined by activists, attorneys for the human rights groups caught up with Rumsfeld on his way to a breakfast meeting. "He was walking down the street with just one person," said Ratner."Around 20 campaigners gave Rumsfeld a rowdy welcome... yelling 'murderer,' waving a banner and trying to push into the building," reports AFP. Since neither President Bush nor the U.S. Congress will hold Rumsfeld accountable for violating the Geneva Conventions, perhaps the courts in France will.

Rumsfeld Flees France, Fearing Arrest (October 29, 2007)
Anti-torture protesters in France believe that the defense secretary fled over the open border to Germany, where a war crimes case against Rumsfeld was dismissed by a federal court. Former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld fled France today fearing arrest over charges of "ordering and authorizing" torture of detainees at both the American-run Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the U.S. military's detainment facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, unconfirmed reports coming from Paris suggest. U.S. embassy officials whisked Rumsfeld away yesterday from a breakfast meeting in Paris organized by the Foreign Policy magazine after human rights groups filed a criminal complaint against the man who spearheaded President George W. Bush's "war on terror" for six years. Under international law, authorities in France are obliged to open an investigation when a complaint is made while the alleged torturer is on French soil. (...) "Rumsfeld must be feeling how Saddam Hussein felt when U.S. forces were hunting him down," activist Tanguy Richard said. "He may never end up being hanged like his old friend, but he must learn that in the civilized world, war crime doesn't pay." CLIP

Pentagon reels from second major nuclear arms blunder in a month (October 27, 2007)
The Pentagon was reeling last night from the American military's second major nuclear weapons blunder in a month. Congress is demanding a full scale investigation and serious questions are being asked about the competence of the officers in charge of the world's mightiest arsenal. The latest outrage came as Commander Michael Portland, the officer in charge of the USS Hampton, the most advanced nuclear attack submarine in the world, was fired after it was discovered that he had neglected to make basic daily safety checks. Last month 70 US airmen were demoted after they lost track of six nuclear-armed cruise missiles and allowed them to be flown halfway across America by a bomber crew that didn't even know they were there. The Pentagon said that it had lost confidence in Commander Portland's leadership after checks showed that he had failed to analyse the chemical and radiological properties of the submarine's nuclear reactor for a month. It is considered vital that the reactor's condition be fully examined every day so that any malfunction can be caught early. If something went wrong with the reactor it could lead to a devastating nuclear accident. The USS Hampton, currently docked in San Diego, is armed with nuclear torpedoes, nuclear cruise missiles and a massive mine-laying arsenal. US Navy officials said that it had also been discovered that logs on the USS Hampton had been filled out to make it appear the daily checks of the reactor water had actually been done. Members of Congress are furious about the latest scandal especially as it follows so closely after the nuclear missile debacle. In that incident a large US Air Force team failed to remove the nuclear warheads from six cruise missiles being flown by a B-52 bomber from North Dakota to Louisiana. It was described as one of the worst known breaches of nuclear weapons procedures ever. CLIP

US supreme court calls a halt to executions (November 1, 2007),,2202693,00.html
America's execution chambers fell idle yesterday after the supreme court made it clear it will allow no more prisoners to be put to death until it reviews the legality of lethal injection.Death penalty campaigners yesterday said they expected the informal moratorium to last at least until next summer when the supreme court is expected to issue its ruling. The moratorium follows a decision by the supreme court on Tuesday night to block the execution of a Mississippi inmate minutes before he was to be put to death. Earl Wesley Berry, who has been on death row for 19 years for the murder of a woman, had been served his last supper and was 15 minutes away from execution when the court intervened. The order for a delay marked the third time in just over a month that the supreme court has overruled state courts and the US court of appeals to block an execution.Death penalty campaigners yesterday called the successive rulings a powerful sign that the supreme court wanted to put executions on hold while it considers a challenge to the way executions are conducted in America brought on behalf of a prisoner in Kentucky.

Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in all cases without exception. The death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights. It is the premeditated and cold-blooded killing of a human being by the state in the name of justice. It violates the right to life as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. There can never be any justification for torture or for cruel treatment. Like torture, an execution constitutes an extreme physical and mental assault on an individual. Consider the disgust most people feel when they hear accounts of individuals receiving 100 volts of electricity to sensitive parts of the body as a method of torture. Surely we should feel even more disgusted by the use of 2000 volts applied to a person's body with the intent to deliberately kill? The physical pain caused by the action of killing a human being cannot be quantified, nor can the psychological suffering caused by foreknowledge of death at the hands of the state. The death penalty is discriminatory and is often used disproportionately against the poor, minorities and members of racial, ethnic and religious communities. It is imposed and carried out arbitrarily. The death penalty legitimizes an irreversible act of violence by the state and will inevitably claim innocent victims. Since human justice is fallible, the risk of executing the innocent will never be eliminated. Amnesty International continues to demand unconditionally the worldwide abolition of the death penalty. CLIP

5 Reasons To Oppose The Death Penalty
1 The death penalty is racist. 2 The death penalty punishes the poor. 3 The death penalty condemns the innocent to die. 4 The death penalty is not a deterrent to violent crime. 5 The death penalty is "cruel and unusual punishment." -- The United States is one of a handful of countries which still executes people. There are currently more than 3,500 people on death row -- more than at any time in U.S. history. Since 1976, more than 580 people have been executed in the United States. Over 50% of those have been killed since 1992. More than three-quarters of all executions since 1976 took place in Southern states. The reality is that lynching still exists -- it's just legal now. Texas Gov. George Bush has personally signed death warrants for 100 executions CLIP -- More on this issue through

French Muck: The New Penicillin for MRSA? (28 October 2007)
Scientists have discovered a new and highly effective weapon against deadly superbugs like the MRSA sweeping through Britain's dirty hospital wards – green French muck. The dramatic antibiotic success of agricur, a clay made from ancient volcanic ash found near the Massif Central, marks it out as a potential rival to penicillin, the wonder drug of the 20th century. In experiments, the clay killed up to 99 per cent of superbug colonies within 24 hours. Control samples of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) grew 45-fold in the same period. The clay has a similar effect on other deadly bacteria tested, including salmonella, E. coli, and a flesh-eating disease called buruli, a relative of leprosy which disfigures children across central and western Africa. It has been classed as "an emerging public health threat" by the World Health Organization (WHO). CLIP

(...) The red carpet treatment was just the latest in a string of warm western welcomes for the Dalai Lama that have included meetings with U.S. President George W. Bush and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The Dalai Lama is lauded in much of the world as a figure of moral authority, but Beijing claims the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize laureate seeks to destroy China's sovereignty by pushing for Tibet's independence. China has ruled Tibet with a heavy hand since its forces invaded in 1951. The Dalai Lama, who fled Chinese rule for exile in northern India in 1959, remains immensely popular in Tibet and says he wants autonomy for the vast Himalayan region, not independence.

25 Most Endangered Primate Species Could "Fit Into Single Football Stadium"
Thanks to habitat destruction, poaching and being made into bushmeat, medicines and pets, primates are now facing their first possible extinctions in more than a century, according to a recent report by the US-based environmental group Conservation International. The report's findings show that twenty nine percent of all monkeys, apes and gorilla species are now facing the danger of extinction.Conservation International's list of the twenty-five most endangered primates includes the Greater bamboo and white-collared lemurs in Madagascar, along with the Sumatran orangutan and a recently discovered Indonesian tarsier. Only a few dozen of the most vulnerable species of listed gibbons and langurs remain, while Miss Waldron's red colobus monkey of West Africa may already be wiped out of existence. "You could fit all the surviving members of these 25 species in a single football stadium - that's how few of them remain on earth today," said Russell Mittermeier, president of Conservational International's Primate Specialist Group. "In Central and West Africa primate meat ... is a luxury item for the elite. Here it's even more for medicinal purposes, with most of the more valuable species going to markets in southeastern China." Mittermeier remarked that the loss of tropical forests and other primate habitats is a major concern in their long-term survival; yet, if reforestation projects were to be included in U.N. programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it could prove to be a "magnificent opportunity" to save both primates and sequester carbon. He noted that local conservation action could prove just as effective: with only an estimated twenty of southwest China's Hainan gibbon remaining, regional efforts to bolster their chances of survival could be seen as an example to be emulated elsewhere. "What they have done, which I find really amazing, is they have local villagers following these groups on a daily basis," Mittermeier said. "We are looking now at applying that in Vietnam, in Madagascar and a few other places." US Edges Towards Cap on Greenhouse Gases

Climate Experts Worry as 2006 Is Hottest Year on Record in U.S. (2007-01-10)
Last year was the warmest in the continental United States in the past 112 years -- capping a nine-year warming streak "unprecedented in the historical record" that was driven in part by the burning of fossil fuels, the government reported yesterday. According to the government's National Climatic Data Center, the record-breaking warmth -- which caused daffodils and cherry trees to bloom throughout the East on New Year's Day -- was the result of both unusual regional weather patterns and the long-term effects of the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The center said there are indications that the rate at which global temperatures are rising is speeding up. Average temperatures nationwide in 2006 were 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the mean temperatures nationwide for the 20th century. Climate experts generally do not make much of temperature fluctuations over one or two years, but ... the record 2006 temperatures were part of a long and worrisome trend. For instance, NOAA said, the past nine years have all been among the 25 warmest years on record for the continental United States. Brenda Ekwurzel, a climate scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists [said] "when you look at temperatures across the globe, every single year since 1993 has been in the top 20 warmest years on record." Globally, 2005 was the hottest year on record ... and 2006 was slightly cooler. MORE on this issue through Global Warming: Key Media Articles Reveal Major Cover-up

California Fire Battalion Chief - Whoever Did This Knew What They Were Doing (October 22, 2007)
Fire officials are now stating that the Orange County Santiago fire was purposely set and there is speculation that other fires may have also been deliberate. See Interactive MapFire officials found three separate “points of origin,” all near the intersection of Silverado Canyon Road and Santiago Canyon Road. Two were on one side of the road, and the third was on the other. “Whoever did this knew what they were doing,” said Kris Concepcion, a fire authority battalion chief. Also, the fire traveled 3 miles in its first 20 minutes when it was ignited about 6 p.m. Sunday, he said. We are NOT implying that the California fires are an act of terrorism however; the threat of pyro-terrorist attacks pose a significant risk to the U.S. and the fires in California and in Greece earlier this year should be a wake-up call. In 2003 an FBI memo alerted law enforcement agencies that an al-Qaeda terrorist being held in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States. It was reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country. “The detainee believed that significant damage to the U.S. economy would result and once it was realized that the fires were terrorist acts, U.S. citizens would put pressure on the U.S. government to change its policies,” the memo said. A Local News Radio talk show host in San Diego asked, “how can so many fires, in so many places, in such a short period of time, all be caused by natural causes”. CLIP

Israel's Decision to Cut Power in Gaza Is Illegal, Says UN
Donald Macintyre reports for The Independent UK, "The UN's top official in Gaza will tell British ministers today that Israel's cuts in fuel and power to the Palestinians violate international law, while the isolation of Hamas has strengthened extremism and started to drive non-affiliated moderates who can leave Gaza to do so."

Cheap solar power poised to undercut oil and gas by half (2007-02-18)
Within five years, solar power will be cheap enough to compete with carbon-generated electricity. In a decade, the cost may have fallen so dramatically that solar cells could undercut oil, gas, coal and nuclear power by up to half. Anil Sethi, the chief executive of the Swiss start-up company Flisom, says he looks forward to the day - not so far off - when entire cities in America and Europe generate their heating, lighting and air-conditioning needs from solar films on buildings with enough left over to feed a surplus back into the grid. The secret? A piece of dark polymer foil, as thin as a sheet of paper. It is so light it can be stuck to the sides of buildings. It can be mass-produced in cheap rolls like packaging - in any colour. The "tipping point" will arrive when the capital cost of solar power falls below $1 (51p) per watt, roughly the cost of carbon power. The best options today vary from $3 to $4 per watt - down from $100 in the late 1970s. Mr Sethi believes his product will cut the cost to 80 cents per watt within five years, and 50 cents in a decade. "We don't need subsidies, we just need governments to get out of the way and do no harm," he said. Solar use [has] increased dramatically in Japan and above all Germany, where Berlin's green energy law passed in 2004 forces the grid to buy surplus electricity from households at a fat premium. The tipping point in Germany and Japan came once households [understood] that they could undercut their unloved utilities. Credit Lyonnais believes the rest of the world will soon join the stampede. Needless to say, electricity utilities are watching the solar revolution with horror.
Note: Why is this inspiring, important news getting so little press coverage? And why not more solar subsidies? For a possible answer, click here. For an amazing new energy source not yet reported in the major media which could make even solar energy obsolete, click here.

The Better World Blog – an introduction by Glenn Ashton (Sept 24, 2007)
(...) So folks, this is a blog that will aim to be interesting and factual and to keep the where, why, who, how, when on the page as well as being provocative as hell and pushing buttons all the way. I am sick and tired of writing what I consider good analysis and not finding anywhere to get it published half the time. So instead of wasting my time blogging will presumably allow me to write and be damned. Either someone will pick up on the work and publish it or it will languish in some electronic backwater. But at least it can be read. And kind reader if you damn what I write, well hell, that’s fine too. I am not known as a wind up artist for nothing. So, bear with me and read along. It’s going to be an interesting journey, that much I can promise. Saving the world is going to be a messy job, but being (amongst at least a dozen other jobs) a plumber, and having been up to my armpits in shit, getting messy does not phase me one iota. In fact I relish it, shit stinks just like money does and let’s never forget that. In fact money probably has more germs attached to it!So let us never forget this fact. This is not our world that we are messing up – it’s a world we have borrowed from our children. Quite how the asshole in the Hummer is going to look his children in the eye beats me, but I will do my damndest to make sure he, and my children, are informed about where we are going wrong and where we must go and what we must do to come right. Enjoy the trip. I am certainly going to……..

Science in Denial (23 October 2007)
Professor Jean-Jacques Salomon accuses scientists of social irresponsibility. The planet accumulates prospects of catastrophe with its multiple pollutions, climate changes and exhaustion of its resources, in large part because the capitalist system has appropriated science to stimulate the economy and has muzzled scientists to prevent them from debating their inventions and their discoveries. And, as though that were not enough, humanity finds itself endowed today with new technologies that are potentially even more threatening, such as GMO [genetically modified organisms] and nanotechnologies, which spread their products without an evaluation of their potential impact on what remains of the biosphere beforehand. (...) According to him, science and scientists bear an enormous responsibility for the disequilibria that threaten the planet: "In principle, they should pose and resolve problems. But instead, they indulge in making their discoveries and they leave the public to cope with their impact. CLIP

Good Morning Jean,

I don't know whether you listened to Alex Jones on Coasttocoastam last night, or if you have seen his DVD "End Game", but either connect all the dots in regard to the "who, how and why, and possibly the when"  of many of your articles in today's newsletter.

The good news of all of this is that we are not yet totally lost. Your newsletter is one of our remaining hopes to awaken the sleeping masses. I thank you and applaud you for that.

So often the methods for counteracting these attempts to control us get buried beneath the sheer volume of fear-producing events we are experiencing each day. Knowing the background, the history to date, gives us the knowledge we need to keep resisting what appears to be the inevitable.

I have half-heartedly practiced Silence as a method to increase my spiritual awakening but it is not easy for anyone who works or shares their home with others. It requires Being and not Doing - nothing that engages the mind - ie: no reading, listening to the radio or watching tv, videos, or even talking to yourself. Not an easy task in today's world - But! today's world requires such dedication to worldly 'inaction" if we desire to awaken to become part of the spiritual "New Earth". What interesting and challenging times we have chosen to be born into. A real test of our merit.

If you don't subscribe to James Gilliland's ECETI News you can email him at

Thank you again for all of your diligent efforts to keep us informed. You manage to walk that fine line between the awakened and the unawakened, offending neither.  Bravo!

“Orange ALERT” Prevent Bush Bombing Iran on Friday, November 16

Nation-wide in unity with the Iraq Moratorium

The Bush regime staged a coup to get in office, is rampaging across the Middle East, changing laws to further its global agenda, intimidating the world by openly torturing people, gay-bashing and denying women’s rights, moving closer to a theocracy, suppressing science and critical thinking … and now threatening to bomb Iran.

The world can’t afford 15 more months of Bush & Cheney! If you don’t act when it counts, it doesn’t matter.

On November 16, wear bright orange at work and school. Protest and gather to publicly pledge resistance to a Bush bombing attack on Iran.

COVERAGE of Bush threats on Iran at

Dear World Can't Wait Supporter,

By all accounts, tens of thousands in 12 cities marched on Saturday to end the Iraq war. The whole march – at least 30,000 people – “died” on Market Street in San Francisco to represent the one million people killed in the occupation of Iraq.

Actor Mark Ruffalo spoke for World Can’t Wait in Los Angeles, shown here with Ron Kovic, the Vietnam veteran of “Born of the 4 th of July”.

See Mark speaking here. “I’ve been around the world in the last eight months, and I’m telling you, the eyes of the world are on us! The world can’t wait another 13 months of bloodshed, and another illegal war and another act of American supported terrorism.

Wear orange and show the world that you do not condone the offenses against mankind that have been committed in your name. Walk out today and talk to folks, people. They’re hungry to hear from you. They agree with you. They’re fed up but they don’t know what to do. What we do is keep talking. Make ourselves visible. I have a message of hope today. The times they are changing. Make yourselves known, you are not alone!”

Bush the Liar Escalates War Threats Against Iran (10/25/2007)
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Bush clashed over Iran, highlighting just how extreme tensions are and the danger of a U.S. attack (as well as the sharpening imperialist rivalry between the U.S. and Russia overall). Putin, on the first visit to Iran by a Russian head of state in over 60 years, denounced U.S. threats, declaring, “We should not even think of making use of force in this region…. Not only should we reject the use of force, but also the mention of force as a possibility.” Putin, who has so far resisted U.S. demands for more punitive sanctions against Iran, also stated there was no evidence that Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons. Two days later, President Bush hit back and took the war threats to a new level: “I’ve told people that if you’re interested in avoiding World War 3, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing [Iran] from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon.” The White House tried to downplay Bush’s remark, claiming it was just “a rhetorical point.” But the threat of world war was out there (implicitly directed at Russia as well!). And Bush was clearly demanding that Russia go along with his insistence that Iran be prevented from having even a nuclear energy program (which is legal under current treaties), because the technology needed could be used for weapons. The Bush-Putin clash comes as the Bush regime, with support of most of the U.S. ruling class, has increasingly targeted Iran as the main obstacle to its Middle East agenda, and may be preparing for war. The administration has orchestrated a propaganda campaign centered on accusations that Iran is building nuclear weapons and directing attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq. The House and Senate have both passed resolutions labeling Iran’s Revolutionary Guards a “terrorist organization”—potentially a war trigger. The Bush regime is waging a “financial war” on Iran and trying to get other big powers to tighten economic sanctions. Nearly half the U.S.’s warships have recently been stationed near Iran. The Pentagon has been drawing up military plans for striking Iran for over a year. Earlier this month, the New Yorker magazine’s Seymour Hersh reported that “There has been a significant increase in the tempo of attack planning.” -- U.S. Allegations Against Iran: Lies, Hypocrisy, and a Cover For An Imperial Agenda -- What of U.S. charges that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons and attacking U.S. forces in Iraq? First, there’s the enormity of U.S. hypocrisy. The U.S. already has thousands of nuclear warheads, and while the Bush regime condemns Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions, it refuses (in its negotiations with Russia) to accept any limits on the number of nukes the U.S. can build. The U.S.—not Iran—illegally invaded and occupied Iraq. Yet Bush and company denounce Iran for “interference” in Iraq. Meanwhile, the U.S. is funding and organizing covert military and political operations inside Iran!So the imperialist logic at work here is that only the U.S. has the right to threaten the world with nuclear weapons (and have more than anyone else), and to intervene and wage war against other countries. Second, the U.S. has produced no conclusive evidence for its charges. Secretary of State Rice recently declared that Iran was “lying” about its nuclear program, but she offered no proof. People should remember that these are the same proven liars in the Bush regime who knowingly spread the lie that Saddam Hussein had WMD before the Iraq war. After many inspections, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has found no proof that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. CLIP

Subject: World to US Congress: act now on climate
! Dear friends,

At last, the world can have a say on US climate change policy. On Monday, thousands of young Americans will visit their leaders in Congress to discuss global warming--and to hand-deliver messages from around the world.

The United States has long been the world's most powerful opponent of progress on climate change. But next week, that could begin to change. US activists are organizing a massive outcry against President Bush's position--and on Monday, thousands of youth leaders will converge in Washington to lobby their members of Congress on climate policy.

The youth leaders have asked for messages from around the world about the climate crisis--and have promised to hand-deliver them to Senators and members of Congress. The timing is on the mark: in less than a month, UN negotiations begin on successor to the Kyoto Protocol. A strong worldwide message now could stiffen the nerve of US leaders to support decisive action. Send your message to the US Congress by clicking below:

The United States, with just 5% of the world's population, emits 25% of all greenhouse gases. What's more, the US government has undermined the wider international community's ability to act, giving cover to those, such as Australia's John Howard, who refuse to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

But the next US president, who will be elected this coming year, is likely to be very different from Bush. And already, the US Congress is showing a willingness to change. This progress has been driven from below--by a surging movement to change the United States' role in the climate crisis.

Let's show the young people at the forefront of this movement that the world stands with them.

Avaaz will gather the messages this Sunday to make sure they're in the youth leaders' hands on Monday morning. The most effective messages are personal, sincere, and respectful. Click below to tell US leaders why their climate policy should change :

Throughout this year, we've built momentum for a breakthrough--from the G8 in Germany to APEC in Australia, we've worked together to bring hundreds of thousands of citizen voices into the climate debate. If the United States steps up, the UN summit in Bali this December could be a turning point for our planet. We can help make it happen.

With hope,

Ben, Iain, Galit, Graziela, Pascal, Ricken, Sarah, Milena, and Paul--the Avaaz team

PS: We'll also be delivering the Avaaz climate petition to US Congressional leaders on Monday, in front of a crowd of Senators, students--and journalists. It's got 450,000 signatures on it already--including yours.

Subject: Urgent: Kucinich Forcing Impeachment Vote, More Volunteers Needed to Put Up Impeachment Posters, and More You Can Do to Help

Last week we told you we were printing at least 10,000 Impeach Cheney posters to put up on college campuses all over the country.

Because of the tremendous initial response from you, our participants, we had already made the commitment to bump the initial four color glossy print run up to 25,000. And then we got confirmation that Dennis Kucinich was determined to force the impeachment issue, by bringing it as a privileged resolution before Thanksgiving.

We need hundreds of additional volunteers right now to help get these posters up, to really give the impeachment movement maximum visibility. We'll be picking up the full 25,000 11x17 posters this Tuesday, and start shipping priority mail the same day. So please, if you are anywhere near a college campus email us and we'll put you in contact with other volunteers in your area. If you've already volunteered, start organizing some other activist friends to join the Impeach Team.

The reason why we are specifically targeting college students with this outreach initiative is that while we the people would all lose if Cheney bombs Iran and starts a full blown World War in the Middle East, they are the ones who would be conscripted first. The posters dramatically make that point in bold red letters

"If They Bomb Iran You Get Drafted"

and then give the two easiest ways for them to speak out, 1) a "text to" short code function for cell phones (send the work "Impeach" to 30644), since they are always on their cell phones, and 2) a fully enabled message to Congress system as an application ("Voices") on the Facebook platform, which they are all engaged in already. See the poster here.

Impeach Cheney Poster:

If you can't help with the postering, but still want to do something to help, please consider making a contribution at the page above, and we'll also send you a free Impeach Cheney? cap (the default). If you have one already give one to an activist friend. And remember, you don't have to make a donation to get a cap, just email us back your mailing address and we'll send you one for no charge, not even shipping.

We want to distribute upwards of 50-100,000 of these posters in the next couple weeks. Just as fast as you can put them up we'll print more. We already know that the first thing Pelosi will do when Kucinich forces the issue is tell him to get lost by embracing a motion to table (it's parlimentary equivalent). Well, we're not going to get lost. And we need every possible impeachment supporter we can muster to send them that message before the vote.

We believe there will be other tomorrows, but few as critical and important as mobilizing in every possible way to compel Congress by our numbers to listen to the voices of their constituents now. The conventional polling companies are afraid to ask the question, because the last time they did, more than 60 percent of the American people thought Cheney should be impeached. But since we kicked off the National Cheney Impeachment Poll, and out of more than 113,000 free and fair votes, 99 percent say impeach Cheney.

If you have ever put up a poster for anything in your life . . . if you would ever consider helping. . . . Now is the time to stand up for the Constitution. Because after all they had to go through, our founders left us with that Constitution, so if we would just speak out we could make impeachment happen, so that we could peacefully oust a criminal government at any time . . . if you really want it. We're not waiting for them to steal another presidential election.

The American revolution was fueled by local pamphleteers, who got the word out with the only media they had available to them, to rally the citizenry to action. We have so much more, the internet, the most powerful grass roots media ever, and in a couple days we will have 25,000 full color glossy posters. Be the modern day pamphleteers. It worked then and it's going to work now.

And don't worry about George Bush, either. He's in the on deck circle. And once the consensus on Cheney can no longer be resisted, he'll be right on Cheney's heels.

If You Can, Step Up For Kucinich Too

None of what is happening now would be happening without the courageous leadership of Dennis Kucinich on this issue. Who else has the sheet guts to call for what the American people want? If you want to thank him for his stand on this issue, please consider making a donation to him as well.

Kucinich Donations:

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

If you would like to get alerts like these, you can do so at

Calling the Question — In the House — on Impeaching Cheney (November 2, 2007)
Broadcast media’s gate-keeping “stars” have done just about everything in their power to keep the matter of presidential accountability off the radar of the American people. That was evident during the most recent Democratic presidential debate, when NBC anchors Brian Williams and Tim Russert meticulously avoided following up on Congressman Dennis Kucinich’s three references to impeachment but somehow found time to grill the contenders on UFOs and what costume Barack Obama would be wearing on Halloween. Pollsters are almost as bad. Rarely are questions about impeachment included in statewide or national surveys. Despite the lack of media coverage, however, when citizens are asked what they think about holding members of the Bush administration to account, they respond with an enthusiasm far greater than that displayed for impeaching Richard Nixon at the height of the Watergate scandal. It is this reality — as opposed to the state of denial fostered by so much of the media and the political class — that Congressman Dennis Kucinich will act upon next week, when he offers a privileged resolution on the House floor to bring articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney. Kucinich will face an uphill fight in a chamber led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat who continues to say that impeachment is “off the table.”The Ohio congressman and long-shot presidential contender may not be following the rules of engagement as dictated by major media and his party leaders. But when Kucinich raises the issue of impeachment, he will be speaking for a great mass of Americans who agree with his argument that, “Congress must hold the Vice President accountable.” (...) Forty-six percent of Americans surveyed backed impeachment proceedings against Bush — with support for impeachment at 69 percent among Democrats, 50 percent among independents and 13 percent among Republicans. What is notable is that, when Time magazine surveyed Americans in the late spring of 1974, after the Watergate scandal had evolved into a full-scale crisis of confidence in Nixon’s presidency, only 43 percent favored impeachment. A media that actually had a sense of history, not to mention reality, would focus on the fact that Americans are more supportive of a congressional intervention to thwart Bush and Cheney’s wrongdoing than they were of moves to hold Nixon to account just months before the former president resigned in disgrace. Now, it falls to Kucinich to speak the reality that, “The momentum is building for impeachment. Millions of citizens across the nation are demanding Congress rein in the Vice President’s abuse of power.” CLIP

Interview with Dennis Kucinich: "Fear is not a basis to run a government in a Democracy" (October 25, 2007)
I interviewed Dennis Kucinich about the details of a plan to refuse to fund the war. What would it look like? He replied with the quote in the title in answer to my comment that Democrats are not refusing to fund the war because they are afraid the Republicans will accuse them of refusing to fund the troops. Here's the transcript of the interview CLIP

The Political Psychology of Terrorist Alarms
(...) Where are the alleged thousands of terrorists inhabiting cells in our country? And where was the debriefing by our authorities to explain why nothing happened? It was nowhere in sight or sound. The high alert and its high anxiety induction just silently evaporated until another month or two, when the next call to alarm was sounded again, and again. We know from the classic story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf that after only three false alarms, people cease to take seriously the validity of previously credible messengers. After six no-consequence alarms, many Americans became desensitized to the need to be on high alert -- yet still lead normal lives. But for some, it became "normal" to be anxiously dreading the worst, given the lesson of the first horrific attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. That prolonged state of worry about one's vulnerability without any clear action to alter it, can have a profoundly negative impact on our individual and collective mental health. I call it a "pre-traumatic stress syndrome." (...) Terrorism is not about war in any traditional sense of destroying the material resources of an enemy nation and taking over their country. Terrorism is about psychology. It is about taking strategic actions that incite terror and fright in civilian populations. Terrorism is about making ordinary people feel vulnerable, anxious, confused, uncertain and helpless. Ultimately, when terrorism works, citizens feel hopeless and lose trust in their leaders to guarantee the fundamentals of existence -- safety and security. Terrorism is about imagining the monster under our beds or lurking in dark closets -- the faceless, omnipotent enemy who might be the friendly candy man, our neighbor, or some horrible creature of our imagination. It has no one place, time, space or face. The power of terrorism lies precisely in its pervasive ambiguity, in its invasion of our minds. CLIP

Behind the Facade of Incompetence (11/02/07)
The storm clouds of World War Three are looming on the horizon. These are extraordinary times that demand something from every one of us. - It is clear that the US media moguls would have us believe that the catastrophic invasion and occupation of Iraq was a sincere effort to promote freedom and democracy in the Middle East, gone awry. But we must remember that everything associated with capitalism is about marketing: making the people believe that things and events are the opposite of what they really are, and creating artificial wants that neither benefit the individual nor society, while simultaneously embellishing corporate profits. This understanding would have been equally evident in the mainstream media’s buildup to the war had we a less propagandized, better read, and more informed citizenry. Even the politically naïve should have known that Saddam Hussein’s threat to the US, so vividly hyped in the media, was pure marketing propaganda. But the majority of the people bought it, and now we have no choice but to live with our purchase. Short of a major social upheaval, we are going to be in Iraq for a very long time, and the death toll will continue to rise, especially for the Iraqis—the unwilling recipients of our corporate benevolence delivered through carpet bombs, terror, and torture. For these are the undeniable legacy of our foreign policies, and the illegal, amoral, acquisition of property by blunt force trauma. If we are to survive as a republic, we must appreciate that capitalism and its cousin, global corporatism—not Saddam Hussein, not Communism or Socialism, nor Islamic terrorists, are the greatest threats to democracy. Zionism and Christian fundamentalism, which attempt to provide the flimsy moral basis for our Middle East policy, also pose significant obstacles to world peace by denying justice to others and promoting ethnic cleansing. Over at the Cosmic Paradigm Network we will begin engaging in an exciting new project to assist the transition of Earth. I have been asked by those with whom I work to establish a monthly meditation envisioning a transformed planet. Please join us by becoming a member of the Network:

In recent days I have observed how many times fear creeps into my consciousness. This has caused me to look at my actions and see how many of them were driven by fear.

The dictionary defines fear as: 1. A feeling of agitation and anxiety caused by present or imminent danger; 2. A feeling of disquiet or apprehension

I would suggest broader definitions: 1. Fear is the opposite of love; 2. Fear is a state of mind that focuses one singularly on oneself.

When one is acting out of fear, he or she will put his or her own interests above any concern for the rights of others. If I am hungry, I will steal. If I am threatened. I will kill. In the extreme, if I see the situation as totally hopeless, I will choose suicide.

But fear is usually much more subtle. Fears remains buried in our unconscious mind until they are triggered by a particular situation. Dealing with our fears is the grist of psychotherapy, beginning with Freud's focus on sexuality and continuing to modern treatment methods.

Fear, buried in our unconscious, is triggered as our current lives unfold. Our parents taught each of us certain precautionary things: "Watch before you cross the street." Religious teachings imprinted yet others: "If you do that, you will go to hell." And our training in the workplace added still others: "Be on time, or be gone." Fear is often translated into "should" and "must."

SPEND A DAY EXAMINING HOW FEAR DRIVES YOUR ACTIONS. I did this and was amazed to see how fears subtly emerged. As I drove my vehicle I worried about the condition of its tires. I was conscious of obeying the traffic laws lest I get a ticket. I watched where I was going to avoid getting lost, or worse, having an accident. And, of course, I kept an eye on the gas gauge.

As the day went along, I became conscious of more fears. When I went out hiking -- "must" exercise as well as enjoy the outdoors -- fears cautioned me to watch out for certain plants, snakes, spiders, wild animals and to watch my footing. I am sure, if you are honest with yourself that you too can see the fears that drive your actions. Am I so riddled with fear that it immobilizes me? No, but it does drive some of my actions.

Observing others you can sense their fears. I know people who worry about losing their jobs, becoming destitute, living in poverty. I know others who worry about being embarrassed, becoming a failure. I have also observed people who cannot handle success and who unconsciously sabotage their efforts to avoid becoming successful.

How many conversations do you have each day about health issues? What vitamins should I take? Did you know that cholesterol doesn't cause heart disease? What can I do about electromagnetic radiation? Do you think we should get flu shots? What about West Nile virus? Is it okay to eat eggs? Health warnings about food and water flood the Internet and the media.

If our deep-seated fears were not enough, they are reinforced by television, newspapers, magazines, movies, and advertising from every direction. Do I need to say more about the ads on television for various illnesses followed by the right drug to be requested from the doctor? How should we react to the ads for the right deodorant, the right clothes, and the right automobile? News accounts key into our fears about the troubles in our world. Fictional portrayals on both television and at the movies trigger fears as well as inducing new ones.

Some of our unconscious fears, and our reactions to them, are undoubtedly genetic, inherited from our forebearers. Fear well served the caveman faced with a saber-toothed tiger. Today someone making an off-the-cuff comment can trigger a fight.

My observation is that fear tends to dissipate over time. Homeland security alerts need to be managed for maximum effectiveness: The right timing and we pay attention. Too many and we dismiss them as crying wolf. Those who would rule us by fear use constant reinforcement. This is where the media comes in.

So where does the fear mechanism come from? It is my suspicion (I say suspicion since I did not observe it first hand) that the fear mechanism was instilled in our bodies as a means of controlling us. By whom, I do not know, but it has been our lot for many thousands of years, and it has worked quite well. Also keep in mind that our bodies mirror our souls. If our souls are darkened by fear, if the light of love has diminished, so will it be with our bodies.

One conclusion, based on observations of others, and myself, is that my conscious mind, the left side of my head, runs on fear. I can hear myself wanting to be perfect, to do the right thing, etc. etc. It is a constant chatter in my head; it is fear based, and it is self-centered. If I listen to it I can become immobilized, or I feel compelled to act irrationally.

I had the privilege of working with entrepreneurs for many years. The characteristic of an entrepreneur, that distinguishes him or her from those who are not, is their willingness to enter into a situation without giving the consequences a great deal of thought. "I'll work it out," is their mantra. I used to say that they had a high "risk quotient." An analyst, by contract, likes to have all the risks defined before moving forward. I know a lot of analysts, and, by and large, their mental processes are fear driven.

So how does the entrepreneur, the artist, the painter, the composer, the activist, or the author go about doing his or her thing? Their secret is that they are not focused on themselves. Yes, they have the same fears that others do, but they are focused on making a new product a success, on creating a masterpiece, on making a statement. If they were to focus on their fears, if they were to pay attention to their personal needs, they could not create.

A second conclusion is that fears from our unconscious will drive our actions until we find a basis upon which to act that is not self centered.

So what does all of this have to do with extraterrestrials, with the larger universe? Fear is at the core of the human condition on this planet.

My final conclusion is that by focusing, not on ourselves, but on the greater good of all, we, like the entrepreneur or artist, can achieve anything we set out to do, literally anything. Patterning ourselves with the almost blind determination exhibited by an entrepreneur, we can push aside fear and operate from the love of that to which we are committed.

In earlier newsletters and in my talks, I emphasize that we are much more powerful than we realize. I encourage you to discover that power for yourself, discover your energy and beauty. Once you have discovered it, add your energy to that of others; together can push aside the dark and create a planet of love and light.

As always, I encourage you to do your own research, communicate with others, human and non-human. Come to your own conclusions. Act in your own unique way. You can accomplish so much by merely becoming one whose actions reflect love from his or her core.

In Truth, Love and Joy,

Mark Kimmel

SaLuSa -- 31 October 2007

In times such as now, when you are placed under so many pressures it is understandable that you question whether any one cares. Particularly when you have knowledge of the truth of your existence as a spiritual Being under the Love and protection of God. Because you are immersed in the activities taking place on Earth, you are often weighed down by the dark energies that surround you. However, no matter what conditions you are drawn into, the Light will always be there for your protection.

Furthermore, you are accompanied by your Guides throughout your lifetime. They know you better than yourself, and have the responsibility to ensure that as far as possible you complete your life plan. For your part freedom of choice remains, as nothing is forced upon you. However, we can assure you that you would be most disappointed, if you diverted your attention away from the important milestones in your life. Your life plan is mapped out with a progression of vital experiences, that are to carry you forward in your spiritual evolution. Whilst it is true that you have all Infinity in which to do so, an opportunity missed does set you back.

Some will say that they have no evidence of being guided, and that is usually because no deep thought has been given to such a possibility. Those coincidences in your lives that prove important that sometimes save lives, or bring people in touch with you that prove to be essential to you are arranged, and do not happen by chance. The problem to be overcome is often your ego, a part of you that is comfortable living in a life pattern that you have established. Often any attempt to bring in change is resisted, and as a result old habits die hard.

If you are to break out of the old ways, it is necessary to put intuitive thinking before all else. The ego will find reasons why you continue as before, and so a battle of a kind takes place within. It is therefore necessary to stick firmly with decisions made to move yourself onto a new path. As time passes and you get nearer to the end times, the challenges to change will increase and are necessary if you have any ambition to tread the path of enlightenment. Allowing the Light in will lift your consciousness up to new heights, and as you do so your awareness will also open.

For those of you who are able to move into a higher vibration, the reward is one of a greater clarity in everything you do. Also, the path ahead opens up, and becomes a new reality that you can focus upon. All of the way your Guides will draw closer and there is no reason why you should not converse with them, and also share your thoughts and desires. Be assured that they listen, and with your permission will convey to you ideas and suggestions that will drop into your mind. Take note of what you hear, it will be sound advice and remember that they know the path that you intended to take.

The Law of Attraction applies in these circumstances, just the same as it does where your thoughts are concerned. You will attract to yourself exactly the right Guides for any period that you are in, and get what you empower with your desires, even if it takes some time to materialize. Allow for manifestation to come in its own good time, and it will fit in with the appropriate stage of life you are at. When you begin to understand how the material and spiritual realms interact, you will be more at ease because you will realize that they are inextricably linked.

Understanding the purpose of life, helps you to accept your situation and more so able to conduct it in a more rewarding and harmonious way. This will serve you well as the opportunities to firmly move onto the path of Ascension will be presented to you. How another perceives the future is not necessarily for you, and indeed at this time many different realities are playing themselves out. However, ultimately only the path to Ascension will remain, and those who desire another way will follow their own beliefs. The Creator allows for freewill at all times, allowing you to move within the different cycles that operate.

Every effort is made to awaken those souls, who have been unable to grasp the meaning of what is happening upon Earth at this time. Clearly there is some confusion, but that results from the ways of the dark forces who would rather you did not learn the truth. Yet within the turmoil that you are experiencing, the Light shines out upon Earth and you can link with it once you acknowledge its existence. Living in the Light in these times is not difficult, but it requires a dedication that will carry you forward with absolute determination. In fact, once you reach this point, the negative energies can no longer impose themselves upon you.

Your aim should be to set yourself above the negativity that exists, and not involve yourself in it but nevertheless be aware of its existence. If you wish to act against it we suggest you confine yourselves to periods of meditation, and enshroud it with unlimited Love and Light. You can apply to individuals, countries or the whole world, as your power is not limited except by your own perception of your ability. You are great Beings who are blessed by the Creator with powers that you are now rediscovering. The higher you can raise yourselves the greater your power becomes, as you connect with Higher Beings who can work with you and through you in that way.

Now is the time when the Light is growing so intense, that it will bring about sudden changes all around. It is lifting up the vibrations of Earth and they shall never fall back again. They will continue growing until they reach a point of completion, and with a sudden final upliftment Ascension will occur. By then you will have been well prepared for this happening, and it will seem quite natural to find yourselves suddenly in the higher vibrations. It will be a happy and joyous occasion as the fulfillment of everything you have worked for during the cycle of duality.

In seeking your Higher Self you will merge closer as time passes, and your success will help bring others along with you. Understand that you are presently but a fragment of your true Self, and cannot be fully integrated until you return to the higher dimensions. It is the whole purpose of your many journeys upon Earth, and you will have expanded your consciousness to new horizons. Following your upliftment the path becomes so much easier, and you will continue to seek even higher levels of understanding. Knowledge and wisdom grow hand in hand, and there are unlimited opportunities to travel the infinite dimensions of life.

I am SaLuSa from Sirius and a member of the Galactic Federation, coming once again to expand your understanding of life upon Earth, and how it is interwoven with all other forms. Now you are beginning to understand the Oneness that exists, you are finding it easier to accept that All is linked together. Having a common goal within creation, and moving towards the Source of All That Is. We shall go forward together as we are One in this grand experience, and soon you shall be fully enlightened as to your part in it. All takes place within the Creator’s Love, that will lead you back to where you were originally thought into Being.

Thank you SaLuSa.

Earthaven's ReMembership Covenant

The "ReMembership Covenant" is a founding document for Earthaven that expresses the overall goals and intentions for the community. All members, including supporting members (learn more here), sign this document, expressing their resonance with "re-membering" these cooperative, earth-friendly ways of being.
PURPOSE: Dedicated to caring for people and the Earth, and recognizing the Oneness of all life, we come together to create and to sustain beyond our lifetimes a learning community village, by gaining the skills, cultivating the attitudes and sharing with the public the resources for a holistic, regenerative culture.

UNDERSTANDINGS: We acknowledge our spiritual bond and aspire to express in the way we live understandings that:

1) We believe in nourishing ourselves, others, and this planet through a simple, sustainable lifestyle, incorporating and celebrating love, work, play, free inquiry, learning, multi-cultural expression, and spiritual practices.

2) We honor the inherent value of all life and dignity and worth of all people, regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, financial resources, or spiritual and political beliefs.

3) Our greatest challenge is to co-create with Spirit a wise, just and sustainable culture in balance with the natural world, and to serve as a living example, manifesting spiritual ecology – a vision of a new reality.

4) Cooperation is the fundamental model for human endeavor. When a proper balance exists between the independence of the individual and the interdependence of the community, each enhances and compliments the other. While we choose to cooperate in community, caring for and supporting each other’s well-being, we believe we should each take primary responsibility for our own actions and needs.

5) Conflicts and problems resolved through group cooperation and mutual creativity often transcend answers generated by any single person. This collective process can transform the very arena of conflict itself. We commit ourselves to transcend mere compromise and to reach for truly transformative solutions.

6) Decision making power is earned by active participation in the shared life of the community.

AGREEMENTS: I will abide by these basic agreements to:

1) Live with respect for the land and one another, acknowledging the Greater Self in all things.

2) Build consensus among concerned members as the basis for collective action in our community.

3) Deal directly, openly and honestly with others, avoiding physical and emotional abuse.

4) Remain attentive and open to respectful feedback from other community members, and when conflict arises to begin resolution with the individual(s) involved, seeking mediation as needed. I will also support and encourage others to resolve conflict when I notice it has arisen.

5) Sustain my involvement in the community by contributing my ideas, talents, and energies in the spirit of active commitment and participation.

6) Encourage my own and other's fulfillment and observance of these covenants, maintaining awareness of the vision and purpose that brought us together.

GOALS: I support these goals, to:

1) Make conscious our connection to Spirit and the Earth and our interdependence with the web of all life;
2) Facilitate the transition toward a life of elegant simplicity.

3) Nurture abundance in the world by enhancing living systems while reducing the consumption of resources.

4) Foster the lifelong learning and growth of every community member recognizing that each individual is both teacher and learner.

5) Preserve our land and the vital presence of wild nature throughout the community via proper stewardship, designation of undisturbed habitats and ecologically sound use of our resources.

6) Cultivate and sustain a living demonstration of our beliefs while fostering Earthaven-based educational institutions that are agents of positive change.

7) Envision a sustainable, regenerative future, and develop the skills to manifest it.
8) Promote personal and planetary healing on all levels.

9) Connect with and serve the wider community, as we encourage a sense of inclusion, integration and spiritual and cultural diversity.

10) Stimulate the growth of our village by attracting members who are aligned with our purpose, understandings and goals.

11) Encourage the establishment of ecologically sound, member-owned businesses.

12) Support through action the intentional communities, Permaculture and bio-regional movements as we are able.

Chinese eco-city heralds revolution in urban living (August 22, 2007)
Story Highlights: Chinese island is first truly environmentally sustainable city; Dongtan is being planned with a community spirit in mind; City will retain a traditional Chinese feel. -- LONDON, England (CNN) -- On an island off the coast of the Chinese city of Shanghai, architects, engineers and contractors are preparing to build a new city later this year. In itself, this is nothing special one would think. With 20 percent of the world population living in China and national population figures set to hit 1.47 billion by 2020, there is always demand for new housing. But the city that is to be built on Chongming Island at the mouth of the Yangtze River is like no other in the world: Dongtan eco-city is planned to be first truly environmentally and economically sustainable city.Situated on a plot of land that is around two-thirds the size of Manhattan, Dongtan is surrounded by wetlands and lies beside a bird sanctuary where hundreds of rare migratory birds seek refuge. It was these unusual natural conditions that sparked the ambitious idea of creating a new urban concept for an entirely sustainable city that would minimally impact the surrounding environment.Planning started in 2005, after the London-based engineering and design firm Arup signed a contract with the Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation (SIIC)."We were asked to create an 'eco-demonstrator'," explains Roger Wood, Arup's project coordinator for the Dongtan project since 2004, "a project that incorporated a number of ideas and design concepts that would increase the Chinese understanding of sustainability."China has known about sustainability for 20 years, but -- like everyone else -- it has just not been able to apply it as a concept."The project is to be implemented in several phases, starting with a one square-kilometer plot that is expected to be ready in time for Shanghai's 2010 World Expo and that will house around 5,000 people. The 6.5 square kilometer start-up area will be developed to accommodate 80,000 people by 2020 and by 2050, the city is projected to cover an area of 30 square kilometers and have a population of half a million. The quake-proof house made of straw
(...) The thick walls also create a feeling of comfort and security, Smedt says, muffling external sounds and providing insulation. But one of the most remarkable aspects of the house is its thermal mass: the straw bales have allowed Smedt to slash his energy bills."I will never need air conditioning in this house," he stated. "Last summer we had temperatures of over 100 degrees for over a week. The house never got above 79, 80 degrees inside." And in winter time, the thick walls keep the house cozy. "All the plaster and stucco in the house absorbs solar heat during the day and then slowly releases it back at night," Smedt explained. Straw bales were first used in construction in the early 20th century in Sandhills, Nebraska, where timber was scarce. The practice was revived in the 1970's and 1980's with the rise of the green movement.Larger straw-bale-constructed buildings are now being designed with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. 20 ways to Eco-pimp your home

14 Oct 2007

Keep it small

There are twenty simple tips to green your home at the end of this story, but first, what is an eco home?

Strictly speaking its a house built to minimise negative impact on the plants, wildlife and human beings in the area. It is designed to suit the climate of the area and uses alternative forms of energy for it's running and maintenance relying on sun, wind and biomass instead of the grid supply."Ecological homes reuse and recycle most waste and used materials that are available very close to the site/area. It encourages local handicraft or art and harvests rain water and reuses most water that the building consumes. It is a home that takes the least from earth's natural resources to build.

For example, a mud wall-based, thatch-roofed structure of a smallholder is the most sustainable, for it uses the least energy. He does not transport any material from any big distance by trucks that consume diesel, which is another precious fossil fuel that hurts the planet's resources. In the urban context, using bricks is 'not friendly' since it uses precious topsoil that takes 1200 years to form one inch of it, naturally!

Bricks use energy at 400 deg C. And the energy used mostly comes from cutting forest wood or by using coal, both natural resources that are finite and therefore exhaustive or extractive.

So unless you start from scratch you will never live in a truly green home. But here are 20 ways to be greener right now.

1. Switch to low-energy lightbulbs. Compact fluorescent bulbs use up to 80 per cent less energy than incandescent bulbs and last15 times longer.

2. Turning your thermostat down by 1 deg C can save up to 10 per cent on your annual heating bill.

3. Never leave your personal computer or monitor on when not in use - they burn a huge amount of energy.

4. Turn your television off at the wall when not in use. A television on standby is still using 80 per cent of its power.

5. Close your curtains when it starts getting dark to reduce the amount of heat escaping through your windows .

6. Air leakage wastes an enormous amount of thermal energy. Seal all leaky doors and windows.

7. Save water by putting a flush saver, or even a brick, in your loo cistern to reduce the amount of water used with each flush.

8. Replacing an ageing central heating boiler with a new condensing type could cut your heating bills by more than 20 per cent.

9. Your hot water does not need to be boiling, so make sure your cylinder thermostat is set at 60 deg C.

10. Next time you upgrade your fridge or freezer make sure you get an energy-efficient model. An "A++'' rating denotes the best energy efficiency.

11. Urban water run-off from paths and patios can be stored in a sustainable drainage system which helps prevent flooding in main sewers and drains.

12. Use water butts to store rainwater for use in the garden. It can even be filtered and used in the house for flushing loos and in your washing machine.

13. "Grey water'' from your bath and shower can also be filtered and re-used in the house or garden.

14. Solar hot water heating is one of the most cost-effective technologies available. Once installed, up to 70 per cent of your annual hot water requirement can be met by this technology.

15. Solar photo-voltaic (PV) panels generate electricity from sunlight. Although a whole-house system is an expensive option, small panels can be used efficiently to power certain appliances such as water pumps and lighting circuits.

16. If your windows need replacing, make sure you fit new double- or even triple- glazed units. Double glazing can cut heat loss through windows by up to 50 per cent.

17. A third of all building heat is lost through walls. Cavity wall insulation is easy and cheap and even solid walls can be insulated either indoors or outside.

18. Increasing the depth of your loft insulation to at least 20 cm could reduce heat lost through your roof by 25 per cent.

19. Use a compost bin and reduce the amount of kitchen rubbish you send to landfill.

20. Most metals, glass and plastics can be recycled and most local authorities have a collection scheme. Make sure that you
segregate and recycle all these materials.

There's more
In the UK Householders can benefit from free loft and cavity wall insulation, benefits advice checks and energy efficiency advice. This helps to increase householders incomes while at the same time reducing their fuel bills and reducing harmful emissions.

There are literally thousands of homes losing vast amounts of heat through their walls, windows, floors or through their roof because of poor or non-existent insulation measures. Up to 25% of a home's warmth can be lost through the roof and 35% through the walls if they are not properly insulated.

Go Green at work

Carla Metcalf, environment officer at the Environment Agency, said:

"In recent years we've heard a lot about the kind of things we can do at home to be more environmentally friendly.

"That's great, but why stop there? There are a lot of things we can do at work to be greener. In my office for example, I noticed that while a lot of people remember to switch off their computer at the end of each day, they often leave their monitor on. We now have posters reminding people to save energy by switching off the lights when they've finished working, along with their computer monitors and phone chargers.

"Being green doesn't just mean saving energy. At work we have a number of ways of reducing how much waste we produce. I now recycle as much as I can as we have recycling bins for all sorts of things, from drinks cans to crisp packets. My office has an on-site composter so after lunch I can scrape any leftovers into a special bin to be composted. If your office is too small for a composter, why not try a wormery?

"Being green can also be fun. This month my team organised a team building event which involves cleaning up a local river bank. Not only does it make a difference to our surroundings it's a good way of keeping fit and having a laugh."

Save water

Alistair Baker, communications manager at Northumbrian Water, said:

"Although we have plenty of water in the North East that is no reason to waste it.

"Providing drinking water uses valuable natural resources-energy is needed to treat it and pump it round the pipe network. Chemicals are used to clean it, the more it is cleaned the more waste products and carbon dioxide are produced. The more water we take the less remains in the natural environment.

"Everyone can play their part by using water but not wasting it. Water is vital for health - so be generous with the water you drink, but wise with the water you use.

"There are lots of simple things which save water, like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth - that can save up to a 10-litre bucket full.

"Fix dripping taps - a tap that drips once a second can waste 13 litres a day. A new washer will save 4,750 litres of clean water a year, the same amount of waste water to be treated, and if it's a hot tap, 4,750 litres worth of energy to heat it.

"An average bath uses 80 litres and an ordinary shower uses only 35 litres. Fit a Save-a-flush bag in old-style cisterns and save a litre every time." Bags are free at

Get your kids involved

Involving the whole family in a greener lifestyle can be fun and with a little encouragement children will love becoming little eco warriors.

It can be really easy to get children involved. Once they know what to do and why, they will remind you to recycle, turn lights off, etc. Encourage children to turn off electrical appliances when they leave the room or are not using them. Show them your energy bills before they start to make their small changes, and then after, to show how much energy and consequently money you have saved by their actions.

Children really enjoy planting vegetable seeds, watering them and watching them grow - it's also a really good way to get them to eat more healthy food. Even if you only have a small yard, some vegetables can be grown in pots, for example potatoes, lettuce, and tomatoes.

Encourage children to put recyclable items in your box, discuss what sorts of things can be made from the materials when they have been processed (eg aluminium cans go into cars, trains, planes). Make models with packaging materials, donate old toys to charity shops and use a library for books, CDs and DVDs."

We present below, a plethora of handy guides to help you green your lives with ease, while understanding why.

And particularly recommended...

How to Green Your Electricity
What's the Big Deal? The cost of electricity is going up (both in dollars and in environmental and health impacts) and it doesn't show any signs of doing otherwise. About half of the energy in the American grid is coal generated. We won't bore you with what you already know: coal is a really stinky, dangerous, nasty, unsustainable, and silly way to make power. By using less energy, and greening the electricity that we do use, we can lighten our footprint immensely. The subject of electricity and its environmental impacts is a massive one and we can't cover every corner of it here. We hope that this brief guide can offer some solid suggestions for greening your electricity and use thereof. CLIP

Free Cycle - Changing the world one gift at a time - SIMPLE, COST EFFECTIVE AND SPREADING WORLDWIDE!
Our mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community. On May 1st, 2003, Deron Beal sent out the first e-mail announcing The Freecycle Network to about 30 or 40 friends and a handful of nonprofits in Tucson, Arizona. At the time Deron founded The Freecycle Network, he worked with a small nonprofit organization, RISE, which provides recycling services to downtown businesses and transitional employment to Tucsonans in need. As Deron and his crews recycled, rather than watching perfectly good items being thrown away, they found themselves calling or driving around to see if various local nonprofits could use them. Thinking there had to be an easier way, Beal set up that first Freecycle e-mail group in a way that permitted everyone in Tucson to give and to get. Freecycle was off and running. The Freecycle concept has since spread to over 50 countries, where there are thousands of local groups that have more than 4 million members - right now there are 4142 groups with 4,012,635 members across the globe - truly a grassroots wildfire of people helping people by "changing the world one gift at a time." As a result, we are currently keeping approximately 50 tons a day out of landfills!By giving freely with no strings attached, members of The Freecycle Network help instill a sense of generosity of spirit as they strengthen local community ties and spirit. People from all walks of life have joined together to turn trash into treasure. CLIP NOTE from Jean: This is REALLY brilliant. I built my house in 1979 with close to 50% recycled content, often with building material that did cost me very little. I'm delighted to see that the re-use concept has been pushed to such a global extent. This website is a MUST visit and this Freecycle Network a MUST join! And check also their Facts and Factoids for Your Learning Pleasure and the other entries in their Freecyclopedia

Local Exchange Trading Systems
Local Exchange Trading Systems (LETS) also known as LETSystems are local, non-profit exchange networks in which goods and services can be traded without the need for printed currency.LETS networks use interest-free local credit so direct swaps do not need to be made. For instance, a member may earn credit by doing childcare for one person and spend it later on carpentry with another person in the same network. In LETS, unlike other local currencies, no scrip is issued, but rather transactions are recorded in a central location open to all members. As credit is issued by the network members, for the benefit of the members themselves, LETS are considered mutual credit systems. Michael Linton originated the term "Local Exchange Trading System" in 1982 and, with his wife Shirley, for a time ran the Comox Valley LETSystems in Courtenay, British Columbia. The system he designed was intended as an adjunct to the national currency, rather than a replacement for it, although there are examples of individuals who have managed to replace their use of national currency through inventive usage of LETS. TRANS GREEN ENERGY Recycling to renewable clean fuels
What is H2ethanol? H2ethanol is fuel-grade ethanol produced from recycled industrial wastes by a clean high-intensity conversion process. H2ethanol is extracted from recycled wastes by a sun-hot process called plasma conversion, which frees hydrogen-rich gases that are processed into ethanol.

World's Local Governments Vow to Combat Climate Change
Lee Jong-Heon, UPI Asia, writes that "Delegates from 136 countries, representing local governments, vowed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and use renewable and clean energy sources to combat climate change, at the second World Congress of the United Cities and Local Governments. Some 2,000 mayors, councilors, and other officials of local autonomies from around the world attended the four-day Congress, in the South Korean resort island of Jeju, which concluded today."

Turning the key in any ignition that ignites a carbon-burning engine is a major moral choice. At least it should be. Every time a nine-pound gallon of gasoline is burned, about 12 pounds of oxygen are sucked from the air and more than 20 pounds of carbon dioxide are spewed back into our space colony's atmosphere. [Auto Free Zone Jan-March 1993; ]

Every pound matters.

“Greenhouse Gas Levels Grave” the Associated Press reports, quoting an Aussie climate change expert. “We are already at great risk of dangerous climate change, that's what these figures say. It's not next year or next decade, it's now,” Tim Flannery freaks. “I mean, that's beyond the limits of projection, beyond the worst-case scenario as we thought of it in 2001.” [AP Oct 9/07]

Predictions of global warming's “future” impacts are already coming true as a record number of floods, droughts and storms in 2007 amount to a worldwide climate change “mega disaster” for the United Nation's emergency relief coordinator, Sir John Holmes.

So far this year, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has issued 13 emergency “flash” appeals - all but one climate-related. More appeals for emergency assistance onboard Spaceship Earth are coming soon as catastrophic floods leave 66 million people homeless or otherwise afflicted in west Africa and across south Asia - while Swaziland and Lesotho declare emergencies after severe drought has reduced harvests there by half.

“The flooding in Africa just now is the worst anyone can remember,” Sir John says, expressing frustration at how little western media attention is being paid to the plight of non-white people in distant lands - never mind an ethnically-cleansed Louisiana. But severe flooding is becoming increasingly common in a warming world, as rapid climate shift also increases the frequency and intensity of storms. With New York City and much of Florida and the Gulf Coast about to disappear beneath the waves, Greenland's slip-sliding glaciers are as close as the car keys in our hand.

“You've got to deal with mitigation of emissions,” Sir Holmes pleads. [Guardian Oct 5/07]

To avert global climate catastrophe, scientists are calling for an immediate 70-8- percent reduction in carbon emissions. Yet, carbon fuel emissions-900 tons each second-continue rising steeply toward an anticipated doubling over the next few decades. If that happens, much of the world's population will be left swimming toward higher, UV-ravaged ground. [ ; Washington Post Apr 26/05]

No wonder a German newsmagazine pictured Green parliamentarian Joschka Fischer holding a gas-pump nozzle to his head, as if he were about to blow out his brains. The good news/bad news is that U.S. reserves of oil will be depleted by 2020, and world resources by 2040. Within 10 short years, any newly pumped U.S. oil will require more energy for extraction than is obtained from the oil itself. [Auto Recycling - Amsterdam]

In his first address to the United Nations, Pope Benedict is expected to deliver a strong warning on climate change, while his unprecedented eco Encyclical calls protecting Earth a “moral” cause for the Catholic Church and its billion-strong following. After offsetting its entire carbon footprint by planting a forest in Hungary and installing solar panels on the roof of St Peter's Basilica, Vatican City has already become the world's first fully carbon-neutral state. [Independent Sept 22/07]

But Dubya still doesn't get it. When the unelected U.S. president met with 16 of America's biggest greenhouse gas emitters last month to reassure them that no new pollution regulations would crimp their profits, the catastrophic sea level rise facing the nation's major coastal cities did not rate a mention. “Instead of decisive political action, we get… next summer another conference,” reported The Guardian's Paul Brown. [Guardian Sept 4/07; Oct 10/07]

Obviously, we are going to have to act ourselves. And that means keeping the portable carbon burners in our garages and front yards mostly turned off. The Big News, though, is not how tough this is. But how much fun we can have enjoying healthier, more creative and less frenetic modes of transport - while keeping more green in our wallets, and in the world we share…

My buddy Rich Vales was on his cell phone from a car lot in California. Even in this state of super cars and custom rides of every fantasy and persuasion, he was turned on by the sexy little car that had drawn him into a Suzuki dealership two blocks from a dying ocean that sparkled in the sunlight.

“Can I start it up?” I heard him ask David Silver.

The manager of Pacific Coast Zenn readily assented. But the silence over the phone eerily continued. Finally, it was broken not by the roar of a carbon-belching engine but by Rich's next comment - now reduced to a silence-amplified whisper approaching awe.

“It's on,” he said.

Like the katsu! thwack! of an abbot's awakening rod, Rich had just achieved Zenn enlightenment - Zero Emissions No Noise.

He'd turned the key on what he thought was a gas engine car and discovered… it wasn't!

Yes, Momma Gaia, there is another way to motorvate! And it's so silent, electric cars and motorbikes may have to activate optional sound-effect tapes of loud burbling exhausts to help their drivers through carbon withdrawals. And warn others out of the way.

“You don't hear it. I freaked out a couple people on bicycles already,” David Silver told Rich after demonstrating the car's loud horn. A beeper sounded when he flipped the car's reverse toggle. (There's no transmission in most electric cars.) “They make it so that you can hear it so that you know that things are actually engaged,” Silver continued.

The car's uncanny sound of silence was enhanced by an airtight cabin. “I hit it with a 90 psi pressure washer, and no water came in,” Silver told me over Rich's phone.

Low speed crashes - the only kind this car is capable of - are more like bumper cars. “It's compressible ABS, you can't really dent the car,” Silver said, slamming the paintwork for emphasis.

“This is a real car,” Rich enthused.

In Europe, this popular chassis with its full aluminum crash cage, and what Rich described as a “massive” trunk, is fitted with a Lombardi mini-diesel engine. On this side of the Atlantic, a factory in Quebec converts these cars to electric power - then re-exports most of their converted Zenn koans to California. (“What is the sound of an electric motor clapping?”) As is all too typical in carbon-challenged bureaucracies, only two provinces in Canada have provisions to license the Zenn.

With a current lead-acid battery range of 35 miles, the jazzy two-seater's speed is restricted by a computer chip to remain within a federally-mandated 25 mph. This is the top speed allowed for “Urban Commuter” cars restricted to secondary roads after GM's earlier, much faster and longer ranging full-size electric car panicked Detroit and the Oil Mafia it has so long served. [“Who Killed The Electric Car” DVD]

While 25 miles-per-hour will not beat a Boxter to the next light, an electric car or bike is going to shut down just about anything on wheels up to that velocity - without shutting down the planet. And both cars are bound to reach the same destination at almost the same time. It turns out that most cars in North America most often achieve a top speed of 25 mph, while average city car speeds cover just 21 kilometers - or about 15 miles - per hour. [Auto-Free Times Spring/96]

As peddle-pumping cyclists already know, slowing down confers huge benefits in just about any dimension conjured by quantum theorists, the environmentally conscious, bank managers, and health care professionals. Since embracing ZENN, David Silver had morphed into a much mellower driver. “I'm a lot calmer now. I used to be a major road rager,” he told Rich.

What's the hurry already?

“Eighty-five percent of Americans drive 10 or 15 miles every day - 90 percent of those miles are on secondary roads,” Silver explained, quoting DOT statistics. “Most of the rest can be driven on secondary roads-much faster than gridlock.”

In fact, the Zenn dealer went on, “average out your daily speed doing your average daily driving,” and your drive times on a 10-15 mile commute will be about the same as the typical 4,000 pound car transporting one occupant and collectively consuming 40% of the world's gasoline - a fact that keeps invading U.S. armies on the march into oil-rich regions at a cost of more than a billion dollars a week and as many as two million lives in Iraq and Afghanistan since 1991. And that's before adding the costs in karma (car-ma), and lost good will. []

Adhering to European environmental laws, at least 95% of each Zenn can be recycled. Contrast this with the 26 tons of hazardous waste and 422 million cubic metres of air pollution produced for every ton a conventional steel vehicle weighs. Each year, countries awash in toxic groundwater posing significant health hazards straight from the tap must deal with another 200 million scrap tires, 15 million batteries, and 800 million gallons of lubricants. Plus all the paints, antifreeze, solvents, sealants, aerosols, adhesives, sheet metal and oil filters used to service and repair automobiles. [USA Today Sept 12/91]

Even attempting to mitigate car pollution drains enormous energy from the grid, while ripping up the only planet capable of sustaining life as we know it out to 20,000 light years. Every 12 months, six million tonnes of ore must be refined to produce catalytic converters to control car emissions. []

And we're not even talking death-trap SUVs. The 5,600-pound, 12-mile-per-gallon Cadillac Escalade, for example, is a crime against the Earth and all her creatures. So too, the blood-drenched Humvee, which sports columnist Jim Caple describes as “The 6,400-pound, 11-mile-per-gallon symbol of a bloated, wasteful and self-centered lifestyle” - American GI's in Baghdad know as deathtrap, and the people under America's “freedom” fire in Iraq see as a four-wheel symbol of death and oppression.

Even if your SUV or Hummer isn't directing .50 caliber bullets through someone's living room, Caple goes on to decry “their exemption from the emission and mileage standards all other cars must meet, the staggering amounts of gas they guzzle, the obscene levels of greenhouse gasses they emit, the stalled traffic they worsen and the appalling accidents, rollovers and deaths they cause.” []

The Zenn covers 3.7 urban miles on about 1/100th of a cent's worth of electricity. The Ford Excursion carries its driver and a passenger over the same distance on a gallon of gasoline - and 20 pounds of C02.

There are currently 22 million SUVs on U.S. roads.

“If we're trying to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, it's illogical to be giving thousands of dollars to people buying Hummers,” said Keith Ashdown, vice-president of policy at the Washington-based Taxpayers for Common Sense. [Guardian July 6/04; CNN Feb 26/03]

Meanwhile, the Zenns and their long-persecuted electric brethren keep whirring along…

Speeding tickets become a distant memory driving a 'lectric car. The only cops you'll be talking to are the troopers who want to check what planet your cool, quiet vehicle's from.

“I'm constantly tailgating people in that car,” Silver said. But even at DC voltages you can't be in too big a hurry. “If you drive this car downtown, you have to budget an extra half an hour” to talk to all the people it attracts,” the zero carbon dealer adds.

Still, this is California where the mantra is: “If it moves, it can be modified.”

“You can change out the electric motor. Those come in different sizes, as well,” Silver told Rich. The car can be “souped up” with another chip, and its range significantly increased with lighter, more powerful Lithium Ion batteries.

Currently worth about a grand for an electric battery offering significant speed and range, “LiIon” batteries are about to be “Wal-Marted” into drastic affordability as 17 120,000 square-foot Lithium Ion battery factories come online in China later this year. Offering much more power per ounce, Li-Ion batteries are also half as heavy and much less toxic to recycle than lead-acid batteries.

In a race to the finish with melting ice caps and lifeless oceans, also on the horizon at the end of 2007 are ultra-capacitors that store energy without batteries. Silver told me that range will leap to hundreds of miles with ultra-capacitors that offer nearly instant charging, instead of the current 4-8 hour battery recharge time. The Texas prototype capacitor is exclusive with Zenn, the electric car dealer added. “That's why we went with these guys.”

Rich was back outside, walking around the car. “It's extremely unique looking,” he said into his brain-irradiating cell phone. “Like a Mini-Cooper-but it looks better.”

But even the 50 mpg, $50,000 Mini does not offer the discount Zenn's regenerative braking, which feeds power back to the batteries on braking for stoplights and steep downhill descents.

The basic $13,000 Zenn can be upgraded with full sound system and deluxe glass power windows for another two grand. Sixteen-eight gets you a custom interior, complete with sunroof.

And once you sign on the dotted line, federal tax credit refund you 2 ?% “in real cash,” Silver added.

But hold onto your wallet, Kimosabe - your savings are just starting! For nomads with a three-million year-old mobility imperative seared into our genes, needing no gasoline and no oil - ever! - feels like taking off a pair of enslaving shackles. As one who has made the switch to 'electric propulsion, my advice is to stop complaining about rising gasoline prices and shout a polite “Fork you!” to the oil barons driving us - and their children - over the Sixth Great Extinction cliff.

“They're about 10% of the maintenance of a gas car,” David Silver interrupted my musings. Insurance costs are so low, EV (Electric Vehicle) owners are cautioned against breaking into hysterical laughter at their bank.

Rich chimed in, “You can plug into any outlet in the universe.”

The great news is that even as Washington dithers to the dictates of the power brokers who write their election checks, states and cities cut off from federal funding to support endless wars are taking command of their destiny. In the Santa Cruz galaxy, downtown parking is free for electric cars like Toyota's discontinued RAV 4 and the Zenn. Plug-in charging is also free at city garages. And PGE's natural gas power plant offers reduced overnight rates for charging while EV driver's count their karmic and dollar savings in their sleep.

The University California has already put in charging stations, and Costco is following suit as the City of Santa Cruz prepares to purchase a fleet of Zenns.

“The car is the biggest thing an individual can do to be green right now,” Silver summarized. “My goal is to not burn fossil fuels again.”

Meanwhile, back in the land of consensual denial the infernal combustion engine continues contributing massively to our extinction through global warming and attrition, killing more than one million people every year, injuring another 50 million persons, and costing each one of us billions of dollars - and soon real North American hunger - in annual crop damage.

This is not hypothetical hype. Each year, India is already losing five billion dollars in crops from car and diesel bus and truck exhaust. By 2030, India will lose 20 percent of its crops through air pollution damage.

And those 1.2 million corpses mangled in road accidents do not count the hundreds of thousands of people stricken by pollution-induced heart attacks and strokes. This year's study in Genome Biology is the first to show how microscopic carbon pollution particles combine with artery clogging cholesterol to inflame blood vessels and cause lethal heart disease. Ironically, with their elevated levels of nitric oxides, particles from fuel-efficient diesel engines are the worst. But car exhaust kills, too. [ Mar/06; Agence France-Presse July 11/06; Toronto Star July 26/07]

Addicted to the machines its urban sprawl is built around, the United States currently spends more than $300 billion per year to subsidize roads and cars. As a result, pavement now covers over 60,000 square miles of that country - 10 percent of all arable land. An even larger fraction of farmland is being taken away from people to feed biofuel to cars. In American cities, close to half of all urban space goes to accommodate the automobile, leaving more land devoted to cars than to housing. To keep this addiction going, within the next decade, newly pumped U.S. oil will require more energy for extraction than is obtained from the oil itself. [ ; Worldwatch/88; Auto-Free Times Spring/96]

Still, we remain enslaved to our suicidal four-wheel “freedom”. The typical American family keeps more vehicles in their garage than licensed drivers in the house. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, in 2003 there were 204 million vehicles in the USA - for 191 million drivers. [Agence France-Presse July 11/06; AP Aug 29/03]

That's 13 million more cars and vans and trucks ripped out of the Earth than drivers! And that was four years ago. With China hitting the road, and India not far behind in personal vehicle numbers and aspirations, the more than 600 million motor vehicles on the world's roads today are forecast to double over the next 30 years. [Globe and Mail Apr11/98]

For the love of God, Allah and polar bears, we'd better awaken from our media-induced petroleum-powered trance before then.

The first aircraft were hot air balloons powered by injuring hypothetical motors. So were the first powered boats. And cars. As Remy Chevalier points out on his A Confederacy of Dunces website, “Over a hundred years ago, there were more electric cars on the road than any other type of automobile. Upper class ladies loved the new horseless carriage, because it didn't smell of poop! Sadly, heavy batteries, long charge times and Rockefeller's cheap oil sent [electric automobiles] into a century long hibernation.”

Today, Chevalier points out, the international cartels that control energy have billions of dollars invested in an oil infrastructure that yields trillions of dollars in profits - and the control over a world of carbon addicts only pushers know.

Chevalier suspects this might explain why the world's largest electric vehicle trade organization, the Electric Drive Transportation Association, is funded by a coalition of this planet's top auto makers and electric utilities - which excludes the public from its conferences.

Space satellites and ultra silent electric submarines use battery technologies so advanced their widespread use would revolutionize electric transportation, while slashing the carbon emissions that are killing the planet. Remy Chevalier remembers as a child being walked through Dimitri Ribicoff's Florida factory where the mini-subs he was building for the US Navy were able to cruise submerged for 40 hours at speeds up to 40 miles-per-hour using special aluminum batteries of Ribicoff's design.

“This was back in the early 70's!” Chevalier exclaims.

Yet, electric vehicle owners and would-be converts remain shackled to the ball-and-chain of heavy, temperamental lead batteries while relatively cheap to produce, amorphous NiMH cells made by Ovonics and other manufacturers continue to be priced prohibitively.

“The major driver in battery innovation today are laptops and cell phones!” Chevalier points out. “Video graphics quickly deplete batteries, and now that we demand CNN (and porn) streaming into our mobile devices, the mad rush to develop better batteries is on. Yet, strangely enough, we discovered that research labs and institutions licensing state of the art battery protocols also restrict their application, with a specific clause prohibiting the use of these new batteries for propulsion!”

“This is no joke, there really is a concerted effort to keep decent batteries off the market!” writes a blogger quoted by Remy Chevalier. “The energy cartel is well funded. They also have goons who operate globally to break up any progress that enters non-military applications. We should have noticed when Ovonics was bought by oil companies.

“Let's stop living in denial. The problem is obvious. The establishment doesn't want decent batteries until they decide it is appropriate and they have channels to profit and control worldwide. The implications for decent batteries are too universal for them to deal with right now… Over the years, ECD/Ovonics has shown little or no interest in actually producing NiMH automotive battery packs, only limit the ability of others in doing so instead.”

Felix Kramer, founder of the California Cars Initiative (, has promoted 99+ MPG plug-in hybrids full-time since 2001. Thanks to the efforts of Kramer and others, the online hybrid car discussion community is shaping the future of the automobile by preventing Toyota and other car makers from scrapping the kind of electric vehicle advances extinguished decades ago by GM. [“Who Killed The Electric Car” DVD]

“Set fuel efficiency standards at 40 miles per gallon in 10 years (hybrids already get higher mileage now), and you save 2.5 million barrels a day, just what we import now from the Mideast,” writes Truthdig's Molly Ivins. [ Feb 6/06 ]

But when four “middle-aged hybrid drivers” staged a two-day LeMans-style race to see how far they could drive a Prius on a single tank of gasoline, they used “pulse and glide” techniques (as described at by Kip Munro) - and got 110 miles-per-gallon!

Energized RAV4 EV owners and other Electric Vehicle advocates quickly organized After lobbying officials for months, they succeeded in getting Toyota to extend leases and allow lease buyouts for their rare and cherished electric compact SUVs.

Record high oil prices are adding momentum to the public's push for Electric Vehicles, which is already seeing half of all car buyers begin their shopping online.

Because the mainstream media watch the Internet closely, Kramer notes, “their broadcast megaphones amplify the stories that bubble up… Now CalCars is exploring the real possibility we can harness all this interest and momentum to incentivize an automaker to build PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles).” [AlterNet Aug 25/05; Check out Kramer's blog at ]

Google and Pacific Gas & Electric recently demonstrated a half-dozen Toyota Prius and Ford Escape hybrid vehicles modified to plug into the power grid, as well as recharging from their gasoline motors. “Going electric” allows each plug-in hybrid to range up to 75 miles on a gallon of gas - nearly double the number of miles of a regular hybrid.

A123Systems sells the aftermarket kit to convert the Prius to a plug-in vehicle.

As the New York Times described it, “The six vehicles are used by Google employees near the company's Mountain View headquarters, and sit under a carport with a roof of solar cells.”

Because the cells are connected to the power grid, the energy they produce when the care are not charging is piped back into the grid. Each transaction is tiny, reports the Times - “a few kilowatt-hours at a time, worth a few cents each. But if there were thousands of such vehicles, a utility could store power produced in slack hours until it was needed at peak times… Utilities pay billions a year to power plants to stand by, ready to produce extra power or to provide small quantities of energy to maintain the frequency of the system at precisely 60 cycles a second. Plug-in hybrids could fill those roles, annually earning thousands of dollars” - for each owner. [New York Times June 19/07]

How cool is that?

On the other throttle hand… with Spaceship Earth foundering and no lifeboats for our grandchildren at hand, even if electrified cars can be made from recycled metals and plastics, are cars a dangerous anachronism that we can no longer afford? Click here.

And please - please! - think twice before turning that carbon ignition key in your hand.

Plug-Ins Going for a Spin
Michael Taylor of The San Francisco Chronicle says, "One hundred Northern California households will be given the use of experimental, plug-in hybrid cars next year in the first widespread consumer testing of the super-high-mileage vehicles in the nation, under a program announced Tuesday by UC Davis transit planners and an auto club."

Dirty Secret: Green Cars Automakers Won't Sell You (2007-09-01)
On a recent run from Boston to Cape Cod, I test drove the 2008 Honda Accord, the latest version of this family favorite. The new Accord boasts an environmental first: a six-cylinder gasoline engine that's cleaner than many hybrid systems. There's only one catch: You can't actually buy this ultra-green Accord, or the four-cylinder version that also produces near-zero pollution. That is, unless you live in California, New York or six other northeast states that follow California's tougher pollution rules. Only there can you buy this Accord, or the roughly two dozen other models that meet so-called Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle standards, PZEV for short. Not only can't you buy one, but the government says it's currently illegal for automakers to sell these green cars outside of the special states. Under terms of the Clean Air Act - in the kind of delicious irony only our government can pull off - anyone (dealer, consumer, automaker) involved in an out-of-bounds PZEV sale could be subject to civil fines of up to $27,500. Volvo sent its dealers a memo alerting them to this fact, noting that its greenest S40 and V50 models were only for the special states. So, just how green is a PZEV machine? Well, if you just cut your lawn with a gas mower, congratulations, you just put out more pollution in one hour than these cars do in 2,000 miles of driving. Grill a single juicy burger, and you've cooked up the same hydrocarbon emissions as a three-hour drive in a Ford Focus PZEV. As the California Air Resources Board has noted, the tailpipe emissions of these cars can be cleaner than the outside air in smoggy cities. PZEV models are already available from Toyota, Ford, Honda, GM, Subaru, Volvo and VW. But chances are, you've never heard of them. Rachel's Democracy & Health News #930, October 25, 2007

[Rachel's introduction: The fossil fuel corporations have a plan for us, and it does not include any substantial investment in renewable solar energy. Their plan is focused on "geo-engineering" -- which means re-engineering the oceans, the atmosphere and the earth itself to make it possible to continue burning fossil fuels. U.S. EPA is on board with the plan.]

By Peter Montague

It now seems clear that the coal and oil industries are not going to allow the United States to curb global warming by making major investments in renewable sources of energy. These fossil fuel corporations simply have too much at stake to allow it.

Simple physics tells us that the way to minimize the human contribution to global warming is to leave the remaining fossil fuels in the ground -- stop mining them as soon as humanly possible. This obvious solution would require us to turn the nation's industrial prowess to developing solar power in its many forms as quickly as we can -- we would need a "'Manhattan Project' for Energy," as the strategy journal of the top U.S. military planners said recently.

Look at the relative size of our current government investments in solar vs. fossil fuels. In 2007 the federal Department of Energy spent $168 million on solar research. On the other hand each year since 1991 the U.S. government has spent 1000 times that amount -- $169 billion -- subsidizing the flow of oil from the Middle East, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, our top military planners. And that figure doesn't include what consumers paid for the oil itself. If our solar investment remains one-tenth of one percent of our investment in oil, there will be no solar power to speak of in our future.

A rapid shift to renewables based on solar would not be easy and I don't want to minimize the effort required. It's stupendously large. But we've undertaken heroic industrial projects before -- and with notable success. We mobilized quickly and massively to defeat the combined industrial might of Germany, Japan, and Italy in less than five years after Pearl Harbor. The original Manhattan Project turned a physicist's theory into a working A-bomb in less than 6 years; just building the gaseous diffusion plant near Oak Ridge, Tennessee was a scientific, engineering and industrial feat of astonishing magnitude and complexity. The Marshall Plan successfully rebuilt Europe after WW II. Our Man-on-the-Moon program succeeded just 11 years after the Russians tweaked out national ego by launching Sputnik into orbit in 1957.

Yes, a shift to solar-powered renewables would be difficult, but it's doable. Unfortunately, any plan to shift from fossil fuels to solar has three fatal flaws, from the viewpoint of Big Oil and Big Coal:

1. The fossil fuel corporations have an enormous investment in fossil infrastructure and they own vast quantities of fossil fuels that they plan to exploit with little real effort over the next 50 years. They have been making excellent profits for a century and, as fossil fuels get scarcer, prices will only rise. In 2006, ExxonMobil reaped profits larger than any other corporation in history ($39.5 billion). If the U.S. does not invest seriously in renewable alternatives, we'll have no choice but to pay whatever price the fossil corporations demand. Just a few days ago oil hit $90 a barrel; eight years ago it was selling for $10 a barrel. No wonder ExxonMobil now has a book value larger than the national budget of France. Naturally, they intend to maintain their market share, even if it means doing everything in their power to thwart progress.

2. The fossil fuel business is 100 years old and fully understood. No surprises lie ahead. But renewables? Who knows which renewables will win out in the marketplace of ideas? If Uncle Sam were to invest as much money in solar power as it has so far invested in the Iraq war (roughly $800 billion), who knows what new technologies would emerge? (Incidentally, if we maintain our current solar research budget at $168 million per year, it will take us 4761 years before we have spent as much on solar research as we have, so far, spent in Iraq.) New technical innovations could be very unsettling for complacent industries like coal and oil. For them, innovation spells trouble. Innovation could render them irrelevant in a decade or two and they could disappear just like the makers of whale-oil lamps and buggy whips 100 years ago.

3. Coal and oil are highly centralized. It's their nature. Whoever owns the fossil fuels, the big central power plants, and the distribution systems can call the shots. But solar? The sun shines everywhere and it's free. Suppose some woman at MIT develops a solar panel that you paint onto your roof (from a can you buy at Home Depot), attach some wires, and start generating your own electricity? Central control disappears. This would be like tossing a hand grenade into the current corporate/political structure. Of course even right- wing politicians love lefty-sounding slogans like "power to the people," but they don't mean real power like electricity or hot water or home-made hydrogen for transportation fuel. (Check out the Nova TV program, "Saved by the Sun," which briefly mentions paint-on solar panels.)

No, a serious plan to focus the nation's industrial prowess onto a solar-powered rebirth will not be allowed by the fossil corporations. Instead we'll be offered a rolling circus of technical fixes aimed at keeping coal and oil streaming out of the ground. The circus is already well under way.

A Sulfur Parasol to Blot Out the Sun

Just this week the New York Times published a proposal to attach a fire hose to some lighter-than-air balloons for the purpose of injecting at least a million tons of sulfur particles into the upper atmosphere, to create a giant parasol to cool the planet. Such a scheme might further deplete the Earth's ozone shield, which remains frayed from DuPont's earlier botched experiment with CFCs. And it could create large-scale acid rain. But contemplating these clownish Rube Goldberg solutions may at least relieve the stress of facing what really needs to be done.

A new word enters our vocabulary: Geo-engineering

Instead of allowing the U.S. to make the transition to solar power, the fossil corporations have evidently decided it's better to re-engineer the oceans and the atmosphere -- and perhaps even the planetary orbit of the Earth itself -- to make it possible to continue burning fossil fuels for another 50 years.

Grand schemes for re-engineering the planet now have their own special name -- geo-engineering. The word means, "global-scale interventions to alter the oceans and the atmosphere so fossil corporations can continue business as usual."

The fire-hose-and-balloon project is only one of many "geo- engineering" schemes in the works.

Fertilizing the Oceans with Iron

There are serious plans afoot to dump huge quantities of soluble iron into the oceans as fertilizer, intending to stimulate the growth of plankton, which will then eat carbon dioxide from the air. As the plankton die, their carcasses will sink to the bottom of the ocean, carrying all that carbon dioxide with them, where it will remain for... for... well, actually, nobody knows for how long. How long might it be before that dormant carbon dioxide comes back to bite us? Nobody knows. Would such a plan disrupt life in the oceans? Nobody knows. But private firms are pressing ahead with large-scale ocean-fertilization experiments as we speak. (They are hoping to get rich selling "carbon credits" to polluters so the fossil corporations can continue contaminating the atmosphere with carbon dioxide. We might well ask the ethical question, who gave these cowboys permission to run geo-engineering experiments in the world's oceans?)

This is all very reminiscent of earlier plans to bury nuclear waste in the floor of the Pacific Ocean, on the theory that the seabed has lain dormant for many millions of years. But that plan never caught on because few people could develop sufficient confidence that the future would unfold exactly like the past. There was that nagging doubt... what if we've missed something important and we turn out to be wrong? What if our understanding is flawed? There was too much at stake, and the plan was shelved. (With carbon dioxide, of course, there's far more at stake.)

Mirrors in Orbit

Now there's a new plan to rocket mirrors into orbit around the earth. Another parasol to block sunlight. The mirrors would consist of a mesh of aluminum threads a millionth of an inch in diameter, "like a window screen made of exceedingly fine metal wire," says Lowell Wood at Lawrence Livermore Lab, who dreamed up the idea. The only drawback to this plan mentioned so far is its enormous dollar cost: to reduce incoming sunlight by 1% would require -- get this -- 600,000 square miles of mirror, which is larger than the combined areas of Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Maine, South Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Delaware and Rhode Island.

Of course the U.S. has a long history of large-scale interventions above the clouds. In 1962 we conducted an experiment called Starfish Prime" in which we exploded a small nuclear weapon (equivalent to 1.4 million tons of TNT) 400 miles up in the atmosphere, just to see what would happen. What happened came as a complete surprise to the geniuses who set off the blast. The explosion left so much residual radiation trapped in space that the world's first communication satellite -- Telstar, which was launched after Starfish -- failed because it encountered crippling levels of radiation. Ultimately, one-third of all the low-orbit satellites in space at the time were disabled by the residual radiation from Starfish Prime. Another unanticipated cost of Starfish was the temporary shutdown of communications and electrical supply in Hawaii, 1300 kilometers from the blast. Who knew?

Project RBR

Despite lessons supposedly learned from Starfish, just last year the Pentagon proposed a project called RBR ("Radiation Belt Remediation"). The RBR project would generate "very low frequency radio waves to flush particles from the [Van Allen] radiation belts and dump them into the upper atmosphere over one or several days." (There are two Van Allen radiation belts; the one closest to earth lies 400 to 4000 miles in the sky.) The stated purpose of the RBR project is to "protect hundreds of low earth-orbiting satellites from having their onboard electronics ruined by charged particles in unusually intense Van Allen radiation belts 'pumped up' by high- altitude nuclear explosions or powerful solar storms." It seems the Pentagon is making plans for conducting nuclear warfare above the clouds. But I digress.

Luckily a small group of scientists from Britain, New Zealand and Finland (organized as the "British Antarctic Survey") caught wind of the RBR plan and actually gave it some thought. They concluded that RBR would "significantly alter the upper atmosphere, seriously disrupting high frequency (HF) radio wave transmissions and GPS navigation around the world." The world's commercial (and military) transport systems are now almost completely dependent upon GPS navigation, so disrupting the global GPS system would create economic chaos, not to mention loss of life. Who knew?

A Plan to Change the Earth's Orbit

As pressure builds on the fossil corporations to quit contaminating the atmosphere with CO2, plans for geo-engineering the planet grow ever-more grandiose and desperate. There is now talk of moving the Earth 1.5 million miles out of its orbit around the sun, to compensate for doubling carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Ken Caldeira of Stanford University has calculated that moving the Earth in this fashion would require the energy of five thousand million million hydrogen bombs (that's 5,000,000,000,000,000 hydrogen bombs). No doubt the Pentagon is studying it with considerable interest.

The Biggest Geo-engineering Project: Carbon Sequestration

Now, the biggest earth-based geo-engineering project of all is in the late stages of development by the coal and oil industries, and is about to be "regulated" by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is the plan that convinces me that the fossil corporations have no intention of allowing the U.S. to make a rapid transition to solar power. This Big Fossil plan is called CCS, short for "carbon capture and sequestration" and it, too, closely resembles dozens of previous unsuccessful attempts to figure out what to do with radioactive waste.

Carbon sequestration is a fancy name for what used to be called the "kitty litter solution" to radioactive waste: bury it in the ground and hope it stays there. Carbon sequestration is a plan to capture gaseous carbon dioxide from coal-fired power plants (and perhaps from other industrial operations as well), turn it into a liquid, and pump it into the deep earth or perhaps into the ocean, where it will remain for an unknown period of time. Professional optimists employed by the fossil industries claim the unknown period of time is "forever." But how can they be sure?

Saving the Coal Industry

The future of the coal industry, in particular, is at stake. Without carbon sequestration, the coal industry will not survive. Just this month the state of Kansas refused to license the construction of a new coal-fired power plant simply because of its carbon dioxide emissions. This is the first time a coal plant has been turned down merely because of its contribution to global warming. The hand writing is on the wall: Big Coal is doomed unless they can find some way to demonstrate that "clean coal" is more than an advertising slogan. This is what carbon sequestration geo-engineers are being paid to do.

Saving the Oil Industry (and the Automobile Industry)

But there's more at stake than just the coal industry. The oil industry, too, is depending on "carbon sequestration" to convince the public that continuing to burn fossil fuels is safe. Even the car companies have recognized that their future depends upon convincing us all that carbon sequestration will work -- and work forever.

We know this is really, really important to the fossil corporations because some of the biggest names in global industry are underwriting "geo-engineering" solutions for the carbon dioxide problem at some of the most prestigious U.S. universities. The Center for Energy & Environmental Studies at Princeton University is conducting geo-engineering studies (1.4 Mbyte PDF) funded by BP (the felonious oil corporation formerly known as British Petroleum) and by Ford Motor, the troubled SUV manufacturer. Geo-engineering work at Stanford University is being supported by ExxonMobil, by General Electric, by Schlumberger (the oil-drilling services giant), and by Toyota.

To convince the U.S. environmental community that geo-engineering carbon dioxide is the only way to go, the Stanford geo-engineering group has linked up with NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council). Together, they are publishing clever propaganda masquerading as science. For example, in a recent letter to California legislators they say, "We only wish to address the science of CCS [carbon capture and sequestration] here." So we are expecting a scientific argument. Instead, the letter tries to persuade legislators to support carbon sequestration using arguments that have nothing to do with science.

The letter is peppered with distinctly unscientific language like "perfectly safe" to describe the fossil corporations' favorite geo-engineering solution. "Perfectly safe" is not a scientific concept. It is a political concept.

CLIP - Please read the missing part at

Why should we assume that humans a hundred years from now -- let alone 500 or 5000 years from now -- will be able to monitor for carbon dioxide leaks, locate them, and take rapid action to control them? The prudent assumption would be that humans will NOT have those capabilities. It seems to me it would be unethical to design our technologies based on untested and untestable (and wildly optimistic) assumptions about future humans and their social organizations. Who gave us the right to make decisions now based on assumptions, which, if they are wrong, could destroy the planet as a place suitable for human habitation -- which is precisely what the carbon sequestration researchers are intending to do.

With the future of the human species at stake, isn't a little humility in order? Will these geniuses find themselves staring into the mirror one day toward the end of their shameful careers muttering, "Who knew?"

But ordinary people who aren't subsidized by energy or automobile corporations are asking the same sorts of common-sense questions they asked 20 years ago when the same sorts of brainy university types were telling us it was "perfectly safe" to bury radioactive waste in the ground:

** What if these scientists and engineers turn out to be wrong?

** What if there's something important they haven't thought of?

** Are these people infallible or are they human? They can't be both.

** Isn't it unethical to claim that something will be "perfectly safe" when as a scientist you know you can't be perfectly sure?

** When the fossil corporations impose their plan on us and begin large-scale carbon sequestration, won't that become a powerful incentive to reduce federal funding for conservation, renewables, and solar power? Then won't we have all our eggs in one basket? And didn't our grandmothers tell us that was a bad idea?

** After the fossil corporations impose carbon sequestration on us, won't we be saddled with even more killer fly ash choking the air, and even more toxic bottom ash threatening groundwater supplies? Won't we have even more destruction from mountain-top-removal coal mining, plus the enormous waste of water and land in the mid-western and western coal states? "Clean" coal will still be one of the dirtiest and most destructive forms of energy. And oil will still keep dragging us into endless bloody resource wars because we will still need to funnel more and more of the world's remaining petroleum into our astonishingly wasteful and inefficient enterprises. Is this really the direction we want to be going? Is this a plan we can explain to our children with pride? Is this a plan that will give our children hope?

** Would carbon sequestration truly be reversible if we discovered far in the future that it was a mistake? If not, who can claim that it is ethical to proceed?

** If radioactive waste and carbon dioxide are so dangerous and so hard to manage, how does it make sense to steer the nation and the world onto a course that will guarantee continued production of these lethal substances far into the future?

** With the survival of humans at stake, isn't this a classic and urgent case for applying the precautionary principle?

By Peter Montague

The Wingspread Statement's definition of the precautionary principle is now widely quoted:

"When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically.

"In this context the proponent of an activity, rather than the public, should bear the burden of proof.

"The process of applying the Precautionary Principle must be open, informed and democratic and must include potentially affected parties. It must also involve an examination of the full range of alternatives, including no action."

The Essence of Precaution:

Critics say that the precautionary principle is not well-defined. However, the Science and Environmental Health Network (SEHN) points out that, in all formulations of the precautionary principle, we find three elements:

1) When we have a reasonable suspicion of harm, and

2) scientific uncertainty about cause and effect, then

3) we have a duty to take action to prevent harm.

The precautionary approach suggests five actions we can take:

(1) Set a goal (or goals);

(2) Examine all reasonable ways of achieving the goal, intending to choose the least-harmful way;

(3) Monitor results, heed early warnings, and make mid-course corrections as needed;

(4) Shift the burden of proof -- when consequences are uncertain, give the benefit of the doubt to nature, public health and community well-being. Expect responsible parties (not governments or the public) to bear the burden of producing needed information. Expect reasonable assurances of safety for products before they can be marketed -- just as the Food and Drug Administration expects reasonable assurances of safety before new pharmaceutical products can be marketed.

(5) Throughout the decision-making process, honor the knowledge of those who will be affected by the decisions, and give them a real "say" in the outcome. This approach naturally allows issues of ethics, right-and-wrong, and justice to become important in the decision.

Instead of asking the basic risk-assessment question -- "How much harm is allowable?" -- the precautionary approach asks, "How little harm is possible?"

In sum: Faced with reasonable suspicion of harm, the precautionary approach urges a full evaluation of available alternatives for the purpose of preventing or minimizing harm.

A Space of Love - Anastasia: New Heroine of Russia

by Kostya Kovalenko

We are taking the opportunity of this tribal issue to bring to our Western readers the remarkable phenomenon of Anastasia, a new heroine who offers hope to the people of the former Soviet Union.

Unlike the others who speak to us in this issue of the Spirit of Ma'at, Anastasia did not grow up as the member of an indigenous tribe. But she is not a product of modern civilization, either. Instead, she grew up ''in the wild,'' totally naked in the forests of her beloved Siberian taiga (arboreal forests), on the banks of the River Ob. And so she is an emissary directly from Nature, and we wanted to include her story in this magazine because her very existence is one answer to the question we have been asking our indigenous contacts: How can we heal ourselves and the Earth?

Anastasia, Who Is She?
Anastasia is a recent phenomenon in the spiritual life of the former Soviet Union. As well known as she is to almost every man, woman, and child in the Russias, she is totally unknown elsewhere. Through her partner, former businessman Vladimir Megre, this 28-year-old woman has produced five out of nine planned books, all of which are best-sellers in the Russias.

Millions of readers in Russia, Ukraine, and other countries love the Anastasia books, their heroine, and the way of life that she is proposing.

Anastasia's advice, to those who can do so, is to return to Nature, build a family farm, and live there in happiness. The tools she suggests for bringing this into reality are thoughts and images of a better and more harmonious life. She feels that the traveling bards and storytellers will carry these ideas throughout the Russias. She aims at no less than changing civilization as we know it.

Dolmens and Balls of Light

Anastasia's books started an interest in the Russian dolmens. These are widespread stone structures most of which can be found in the environs of the Black Sea. Each dolmen is distinctive, but they all share the post-and-lintel stone structure and the existence of a hole

in the side which is too small for most adults to go through.

Anastasia claims in one of her books that, 10,000 years ago, her female ancestor, her ''pra-mother,'' went into eternal meditation in one of these giant stone structures, with the intent of preserving for the future the dying art of communicating with a baby through breastfeeding. The book also says that there are similar dolmen structures on other continents and that these have been located, but there is no data yet concerning where they are.

Many people feel strong energies near the dolmens. Some see unusual balls of light, and these have been photographed (see photo at left). Women -- for the most part unclothed -- love to make pilgrimages to the dolmens and to the now-booming resort area near the city of Gelendgik on the shores of the Black Sea. Ogonek, a Russian illustrated weekly magazine, published an article about these pilgrimages.

An analysis by M. K. Teshev of the coals from a fire at the entrance to an underground dolmen has dated that Russian megalithic site at 2320 B.C plus-or-minus 40 years. (See information here from a Russian megalith site.)

The stone slabs which comprise a dolmen are huge (one stone can be a rectangular piece weighing several tons).

Scientists have not agreed upon the origin or purpose of the dolmens, but Anastasia claims that they were constructed for a special sort of death. A tribe would build a structure for a person of wisdom. While one side of the top cover was held up, this person crawled inside, where he or she was to live in meditation until death. Anastasia claims that the soul of a person who died in such a special way stays forever near the dolmen. Such a soul will not reincarnate. Instead, through this sort of passing on, the soul acquires new dimensions of knowledge and makes this knowledge available to dolmen visitors.

This is how Anastasia's "pra-mama," who lived many thousands of years ago (Vladimir Megre mentions a date of 10,000 years), preserved for all women the sacred knowledge of how a breastfeeding mother can communicate with her child.

Many of the Dolmen structures were ruined in the centuries and years before Vladimir Megre published his story. The most severe ruination occured in the 20th century when farmers used the stones as building material -- this is described by Gurdjiev in his book "Meetings with Famous People". But since Anastasia's revelations, the Dolmens have become places of pilgrimage.

Like the light seen at the dolmens, there is a ball of light that seemingly looks after Anastasia herself. Since childhood it has protected her. Supposedly it once prevented a government-sent expedition from taking Anastasia by force from the taiga to Moscow for scientific investigation. It is also said that, when the Gelendgik city administration refused permission for the first Anastasia conference to be held there, a ball of light paid a visit to the city's cabinet members. After that, good cooperation between the city and the pilgrims was ensured. A melted piece of glass in the city's administration building still testifies to what happened then.

Some people say that there is no Anastasia, that she is only a thoughtform. But whatever she is, the people of the Russias feel her presence, and are strongly attracted to her message.

''A Space of Love''
Stories of Anastasia
I. A Little Girl Lives Alone in the Forest

Anastasia was born and lived her entire life (except for several short railway trips to cities) in her taiga home, a Siberian cedar forest on the bank of the River Ob. Her parents died when she was little, while trying to save a mysterious "tingling cedar" tree. Although she was so young that she could not even walk yet, she went on living by herself in her mother's ''Space of Love.'' She was occasionally visited by her grandfathers, but the dedushkas did not come to teach. Rather, they tested their purity by asking her questions about different things, like why a bug is colored in a certain way, and as she grew older, about more existential issues.

Living by herself, Anastasia was served, loved and protected by taiga animals -- squirrels, bears, wolves. This would be seen and documented by the man whom she would meet in the taiga, and who would be the father of her child.

II. The ''Rape'' Scene and the Ball of Light

One cool, sunny day in Siberia, a man wandering along the banks of the Ob River met Anastasia, whom he had seen once before. The man, Vladimir Megre, told Anastasia that he was hoping to find two old men whom he had encountered the previous autumn. The old men had hinted to Vladimir that they possessed certain secrets of the cedar tree. This message led him to spend the following winter researching the tree's properties. Megre had come to the forest in hopes of speaking to the old men again.

Anastasia told him that as it happened these two old men were her grandfather and great-grandfather. She agreed to guide him 25 kilometers through the taiga to where her elder relatives lived.

After walking about five kilometers, they stopped for a rest. While Vladimir drank his brandy and ate the snacks he had brought, Anastasia removed her warm and heavy outer garb (a coat, shawl, skirt and boots) and hid them. Now this lovely young woman with blond hair, big, grayish-blue eyes, and smiling lips, covered only by a short slip, lay down in a sunny spot with her palms turned upward toward the sun.

The air temperature was only 12 degrees Centigrade and this woman was lying there half naked. Vladimir, a Russian businessman who considered himself a man of the world, assumed that an invitation was being made.

Vladimir approached Anastasia and attempted to hug her. She made no effort to resist him. He became more forceful. But before he could go further, he passed out, remembering the words, "Please don't. Cool down."

As he came to, he noticed that Anastasia was waving something away. Later he would learn that this was the ball of light that safeguards Anastasia throughout her life.

Vladimir told Anastasia that he felt teased and cheated by her undressing. She responded that she was uncomfortable in clothes and didn't like to be dressed; that she covered herself only when she is going out of the woods, to see people. Using the kind of learned vocabulary one would not expect from a taiga dweller, Anastasia explained why she is never cold. "The organisms of those who cover themselves with heavy clothing -- of those hiding from both cold and heat -- lose more and more of their ability to adapt to the changing environment. I never lost this ability. That's why I don't really need clothing."

What happened next is discussed in Vladimir's books, which some consider to be truth and others call fairytales. Before we look further at these books, let me tell you a little background about our two characters and how their paths crossed.

III. For Love of a Cherry Tree

When Michael Gorbachev rose to political power, one of the first things he did was to grant city people small pieces of land for dachas. These dachas were usually just large enough for a small cottage, five to ten trees, and a small garden. The idea was that people were to grow food for themselves. Vladimir received a small dacha and had planted a cherry tree on the land. He cared about this tree and this created a link between him and the tree. Those who received the land and cultivated it are called "dachniks.''

According to Anastasia, the plants we link to ourselves through our love create our own ''Space of Love.'' For Anastasia, this Space is the clearing in the woods where she lives all her life. For urban dwellers, this link can be with the flowers on their windowsills. For others, as for Vladimir, a Space of Love is created on their dachas.

So Vladimir had planted a cherry tree on his dacha. And, as this story goes, in the spring during which Vladimir's tree first produced cherries, Vladimir ate only one of them. The taste of this Siberian cherry wasn't as good as the taste of the cherries he bought and brought with him from town. But still, he caressed the small tree and even kissed one of its leaves. The tree wanted to give something in return, but it couldn't, as Vladimir hadn't eaten the remaining cherries. So the tree's unrealized wish hovered in the space until Anastasia felt it and responded.

This was 1994, before the ''rape scene.'' Hearing or feeling a ''call,'' Anastasia actually found Vladimir, visited him -- and fell in love. Such love towards a man was a new feeling for her.

And so when they met again the following year, when Vladimir went in pursuit of the secrets of the cedar trees, Anastasia took her unknowing loved one to her home, the personal Space of Love that had been prepared for her by her parents. It was a forest clearing, where all the plants and animals bathed in her love and cared for her in return. Squirrels, responding to a movement of her hand, brought her taiga food. Cracked cedar nuts, dried mushrooms, different berries were and are her daily diet. Anastasia spends no time for "eating"; she thrives on bits of taiga food taken every now and then.

Vladimir saw that one of Anastasia's sleeping places near the homes of her grandfathers was an area covered with tiny cedar branches. He slept there -- and awoke to discover that he had been sharing the nest with a she-bear! Anastasia had asked the animal to join her sleeping guest to keep him warm. Vladimir refused to spend another night in the lair unless Anastasia was next to him. On that night, they conceived their child.

IV. Anastasia's Child

The next year, on Vladimir's third visit, Anastasia showed him their son, also named Vladimir. She asked the father to be quiet, and pointed at their baby, which lay under the front leg of Megre's old girlfriend the bear. The baby had woken up soiled, and the bear was wiping its small bottom with her tongue. In this way, Vladimir got the message that nobody needed the diapers he had brought with him from the city.

Then, to Vladimir's surprise, when the bear left to do whatever bears usually do, a she-wolf took over the care of the baby.

Later, Vladimir saw another spectacular wildlife scene. An eagle (a friend of Anastasia's grandfather) took the baby into the sky to see the earth from above. It was the last flight of this bird who once had carried the small Anastasia aloft as well. The old eagle died shortly after safely delivering Anastasia's son to his mother. Everybody present considered it a nice death for a bird.

V. Anastasia Affects the Bigger World

What does this young woman do for the whole day if she needs to think about neither food nor clothing? She participates in the life of the bigger world. One of two of her main areas of interest is the dachniks - the people in the former Soviet Union who grow plants on their dachas.

Anastasia writes: "Today, the society you live in can learn much through communicating with the plants grown on dachas .... For instance, working on their dachas, people feel better. For many people, dacha life becomes a way to live longer. They become kinder people. It is dachniks who could bring into society an awareness about the malignancy of technocratic civilization."

Her tool in this task is her "beam." With the aid of her beam, Anastasia can connect with a particular person and see, hear, and change what's going on around this person. She can put helpful ideas into a person's mind, like plant-growing secrets into the mind of a dachnik gardener, or into the mind of a doctor the best way to treat a sick person. She had performed the latter feat when Vladimir became sick in the city after their second meeting.

Her grandfathers possess this beam, but Anastasia's has become many times stronger than those of her grandfathers. This, the dadushkas say, is because she has discovered love.

VI. The Future of the World -- Anastasia's Dream

When Anastasia wants to accomplish something, she says, she dreams of it in much detail and with a joy in her heart. In such a way, she dreamed of conceiving a baby with Vladimir and it happened.

Anastasia is dreaming a plan to change the Earth. According to her plan, everything is going to start in Russia (she mentioned Ukraine and White Russia as well). Every family will be able to obtain from the state a one-hectare piece of land which they will own, but without the right to sell it. The family will make a family estate there for the generations to come. Everything is going to be on that one hectare -- a building, one-quarter to three-quarters of a hectare of forest, a pond, fields, and a fence made by trees and bushes.

Since according to Anastasia it's possible to raise plenty of agricultural products without using chemical fertilizers, the family will be able to feed itself and even sell the ecologically pure produce at market. And they will have plenty of time to think about the really important things (Anastasia calculates that an average person in Russia spends three hours daily watching television, but only 15-20 minutes per life thinking of God). Anastasia says that if you sow things properly, the plants will regenerate the soil by themselves, just as they do in the wild and everywhere else where man is behaving himself.

As was his habit, Vladimir questioned Anastasia's thinking. So another coincidence happened to convince him. Near the ancient city of Vladimir (as in Megre's first name), he was shown two pre-revolution (i.e. the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution) estates that were laid out in the way now proposed by Anastasia. He was surprised to learn that, although the land in the old estates wasn't chemically fertilized, all the products grown there (for example, apples and hay) were considered the best in the region. Photos he took of the apple trees are displayed on the cover of the fifth Anastasia book.

The base of the new Russia's wealth, Anastasia claims, will be those private estates where people will live happy lives and children will see Nature all around them. Anastasia sees schools in about 150-200 family settlements -- a new kind of school, based on love and openness. Megre found a prototype of such a school run by Shchetinin. Kids love to be in this live-in school that they built by themselves. By immersing themselves into the building of a school, they learn all the math they will ever need in just a year or two.

Most of Moscow's population, Anastasia says, will leave the city and settle in the country. Russia's capital will be left to foreign tourists, who supposedly will come in masses to see the new country, drink pure water from clean rivers, and eat freshly-picked vegetables. Anastasia believes that the rest of the world will follow Russia in the forthcoming eco-revolution.

VII. Elder brothers of Anastasia

In the very beginning, Anastasia mentioned that her plans of changing the world were approved by ''Them.'' She never directly explains who They are. Instead, she says that the founders of the world religions are her "elder brothers" who are now getting ready to channel all the energy accumulated in the thought-form fields of their religions into the new-world creation dreamed of by Anastasia.

Anastasia also dreamed of Vladimir's publishing nine books about his experiences with her and about her ideas -- books that would catalyze changes in Russia and in the world. Vladimir could not believe that he would write a series of popular books, and when reading them you can tell that he isn't a writer. But still, the books contain the magic presence of Anastasia. So Vladimir has became one of the best-selling authors in Russia. His fifth book was just published in a batch of half a million copies.

Megre's books have made a big splash in the former Soviet Union and also in Germany. Many people feel an attraction to Anastasia's vision of the future. Her followers are growing cedar trees from nuts. They talk about living in the country and about new ways of bringing up their children. Four of Megre's books are now available in German, and a fifth is due for publication in January. Megre says that he has about two million readers, which is a low estimation because his books are passed around -- people want to share with others this touching, wonderful, magical story. This story that holds the promise of a different future -- a world where man will live in harmony with nature and not limit himself with the tools of technocratic civilization. From living in this manner, a person's mind will be much stronger and more powerful than it is now.

In Closing. . .

This whole story sounds like a modern-day fairytale. Or maybe ''legend'' would be a better word; one can't prove or disprove this story (sitting in the warmth of one's chair). I found that this story resonates very well with my heart and it doesn't sound unreal for my mind.

Personally I would love to live in such a world, one full of love and joy. It doesn't matter for me whether Anastasia really exists, as many people feel, or if she is just a powerful image created to make money, as the unbelievers claim. We are powerful enough to change even without Anastasia -- if not the whole world, then at least our own lives and the growing up experience for our children. We always can choose to live in the world of love instead of the world of fear.

For the Playfully Serious Gardener
Here is Anastasia's advice on how to grow a plant from a seed.

Before planting, put the seed or seeds into your mouth under your tongue for no less then nine minutes. Next, put the seeds between your palm for 30 seconds. While doing this you need to stay barefooted on the ground where you are going to plant the seeds. Then open the palms, take the seed close to your mouth and breathe on it the air from your lungs. Warm the seed with your breath and it will learn what's inside you. Keep the palm open for another 30 seconds for the seed to see the heaven's bodies and it will determine when to sprout.

After that you may put the seed into the soil, but do not water it for three days, so that your saliva remains on the seed. Do the planting on the favorable day for the particular plant, according to a moon calendar.

When the sprout comes above the ground, don't remove all the weeds around it. Leave in the vicinity of the seedling at least one of each kind of plants. Some will protect the sprout from diseases, while others will provide it with additional information. Later you will need to communicate with the plant and to touch it at least once at a full moon.

Anastasia claims that the produce grown in such a way could heal any disease, add extra years to one's life, help get rid of unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking, and drug use, and can bring peace. The best effect, she says, is achieved when the produce is consumed within three days of harvesting -- and the sooner the better.

Anastasia also discusses the importance of having bees on every dacha, dacha wake-up procedures, and her views on food consumption. She tells of a need to sleep under the stars at least once a year - preferably around your birthday. This timing is hard for me, as I was born in January.

On Children
Anastasia's second main interest is in working with children. There are few details on this topic in Megre's books, but it is clear that Anastasia is preaching the important new-age ideas. For instance, she reminds us that it is the parents who should learn from the kids. Anastasia has dreams and visions of the future that show her how the children are going to change everything. They will start destroying weapons purely with thoughts -- an action leading to a disarmament race, because world nations don't want their arsenals of ammunitions to explode. Anastasia sees children changing the face of St. Petersburg, replacing every second building on Nevsky Prospect with a cedar tree park.

And she has interesting views on education, based on the fact that she herself never speaks ''a language.'' She told Vladimir that she speaks with him not ''in Russian'' but in his language, using the words best understood by him. Similarly, she talks with other people using their own language, be it French, English, or any other.

Subject: World Time Zones and Free Phone Calls

Nowadays many more people are phoning their friends and associates in different countries. Problem is they may be sound asleep while you are wide awake. So, how do you easily find out what time it is elsewhere?

1. I found the best is the Sunclock (see attached picture of what it looks like). You can download the program by clicking HERE. Just hover your mouse over the place you want to call and it will show you the time.

2. The Sunclock is great for the times now, but what about future times. WorldClock allows you to type in the date and time of any city. Then when you click on other locations you can see what time it will be where you live, and/or elsewhere. Click HERE to open WorldClick... then Bookmark for your future reference.

While I am at it I suggest you install VoipCheap and do as I do make free phone calls almost anywhere on the planet (even local calls). I have been using this service for 2 years and I can tell you it is GREAT.

This is how VoipCheap works (very similar to Skype except the phone calls are free). After you have downloaded and installed the program you will get a certain amount of free time. To continue you have to pay 10 Euros. This gives you 90 days FREE calls. The money is used to make calls to mobile (cell) phones or SMS text... at very good rates. I have just purchase another 10 Euros worth and now have 24 Euros in credit because most of my calls are free. If you have a laptop you can use it anywhere in the world to make calls from at the same rates.

By the way. If you are using Skype, MSM or Outlook you can import all your contact list/s (with their phone numbers) by clicking on TOOLS at the top of your VoipCheap window. This saves you all the time and hassles of re-typing them all. Also, sending an SMS to any mobile phone (cell) in the world is a breeze (much easier than using your phone pad) and it is less than half the price. And, if you put you mobile phone (cell) number into VoipCheap profile the receiver of your SMS message will see it and can reply to your mobile (cell).

I trust this will make you life a little more exciting and save you bucks in the process.

Love & blessings,
