The Perfect Storm Series #11: Cooler Heads Must Prevail Before It Gets Too Hot

Hello everysoul!

A "shorter" 50-page compilation for you, as will most likely be the case this whole summer. Some quite important stuff below. Of particular concern: the future of humanity and need for G-8 politicians to get more serious about curbing global warming and the erosion of all life on Earth... That, and many other things, as usual...

Enjoy and share ;-)

"Oil was the primary reason for the invasion of Iraq. There were, of course, no weapons of mass destruction, no connection between Iraq and 911, no connection between Iraq and Al Queda's role in 911. Despite that the Bush-Cheney Administration, with the approval of a Democratic-controlled Senate and the Democratic leader of the House, supported and commenced a brutal campaign of shock and awe, of bombing, invasion and then occupation of Iraq. Iraq may have as much as 300 billion barrels of oil untapped. With oil headed toward $70 a barrel, the oil wealth of Iraq could be worth as much as $21 trillion. Nearly 3,400 sons and daughters of America have been sacrificed. As many as 1,000,000 innocent Iraqi civilians have been killed in the course of the US occupation. The taxpayers of the United States will pay between one and two trillion dollars for this war, which is based on lies.Throughout this entire murderous enterprise, I have consistently challenged the war, challenged our right to be in Iraq, and challenged my own party about its commitment to peace. Many of the Democratic candidates for President say they are for peace but keep voting to fund the war in Iraq. They say they are for peace, but they vote for legislation which will privatize the oil of Iraq, thus insuring that there will be no peace. Why? Because the privatization of Iraqi oil will be rightly seen as one of the greatest acts of thievery of one nation against another."

Dennis Kucinich

"Hello, my name is Cindy Sheehan and my son Casey Sheehan was killed on April 04, 2004 in Sadr City , Baghdad , Iraq . He was killed when the Republicans still were in control of Congress. Naively, I set off on my tireless campaign calling on Congress to rescind George’s authority to wage his war of terror while asking him “for what noble cause” did Casey and thousands of other have to die. Now, with Democrats in control of Congress, I have lost my optimistic naiveté and have become cynically pessimistic as I see you all caving into as one Daily Kos poster called: “Mr. 28%” There is absolutely no sane or defensible reason for you to hand Bloody King George more money to condemn more of our brave, tired, and damaged soldiers and the people of Iraq to more death and carnage. You think giving him more money is politically expedient, but it is a moral abomination and every second the occupation of Iraq endures, you all have more blood on your hands. Ms. Pelosi, Speaker of the House, said after George signed the new weak as a newborn baby funding authorization bill: “Now, I think the president’s policy will begin to unravel.” Begin to unravel? How many more of our children will have to be killed and how much more of Iraq will have to be demolished before you all think enough unraveling has occurred? How many more crimes will BushCo be allowed to commit while their poll numbers are crumbling before you all gain the political “courage” to hold them accountable. If Iraq hasn’t unraveled in Ms. Pelosi’s mind, what will it take? With almost 700,000 Iraqis dead and four million refugees (which the US refuses to admit) how could it get worse? Well, it is getting worse and it can get much worse thanks to your complicity."

'It's up to you now': Sheehan quits (May 29, 2007);_ylt=Ai15aglIf5E6xE7S20Zn8Mas0NUEAP
FORT WORTH, Texas - Cindy Sheehan, the soldier's mother who galvanized an anti-war movement with her monthlong protest outside President Bush's ranch, says she's done being the public face of the movement. (...) Sheehan criticized "blind party loyalty" as a danger, no matter which side it involved, and said the current two-party system is "corrupt" and "rapidly descending into with nary a check or balance: a fascist corporate wasteland."Sheehan said she had sacrificed a 29-year marriage and endured threats to put all her energy into stopping the war. What she found, she wrote, was a movement "that often puts personal egos above peace and human life." But she said the most devastating conclusion she had reached "was that Casey did indeed die for nothing ... killed by his own country which is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think". "Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives," she wrote. It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years and Casey paid the price for that allegiance. I failed my boy and that hurts the most." "I am going to take whatever I have left and go home," Sheehan wrote."Camp Casey has served its purpose. It's for sale. Anyone want to buy five beautiful acres in Crawford, Texas?"

Excellent Video: Crude-the Incredible Journey of Oil
This is an excellent three-part video explaining details of how Earth's carbon cycle works and how runaway greenhouse conditions in Earth's past led to worldwide ocean death and stagnation which in turn created the massive deposits of oil which we are now re-releasing into the atmosphere in the form of CO2 quickly setting the stage for the same conditions that created the oil to begin with at a an incredibly accelerated rate. It paints a pretty dismal future. Silicon Valley engineers peek at the Tesla (May 4, 2007)
Tesla Motors, maker of the electric-powered sports car formerly code-named DarkStar, showed off the Roadster's second engineering prototype here Thursday evening at a networking event of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. (...) Tesla's first $92,000 two-seater sports car is expected to ship in November or December of this year, according to Bourn. Among the first 180 owners of the Tesla--125 of whom paid in full up front--will be Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who invested in the San Carlos, Calif., company. (...) The idea behind the Roadster, Bourn said, was to minimize resource consumption per mile, emit low carbon emissions and get away from America's destructive oil diet--all without sacrificing performance. And the company has done that: The car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in four seconds, topping out at about 130 mph. It runs completely on electricity and plugs into an electrical outlet in the wall, giving the car's battery a range of up to 250 miles, according to Bourn. CLIP

Clean energy claim: Aluminum in car tanks Professor says Energy Department ‘egos’ blocking hydrogen breakthrough (May 18, 2007)
A Purdue University engineer and National Medal of Technology winner says he's ready and able to start a revolution in clean energy.Professor Jerry Woodall and students have invented a way to use an aluminum alloy to extract hydrogen from water — a process that he thinks could replace gasoline as well as its pollutants and emissions tied to global warming. But Woodall says there's one big hitch: "Egos" at the U.S. Department of Energy, a key funding source for energy research, "are holding up the revolution."Woodall says the method makes it unnecessary to store or transport hydrogen — two major challenges in creating a hydrogen economy. "The hydrogen is generated on demand, so you only produce as much as you need when you need it," he said in a statement released by Purdue this week. So instead of having to fill up at a station, hydrogen would be made inside vehicles in tanks about the same size as today's gasoline tanks. An internal reaction in those tanks would create hydrogen from water and 350 pounds worth of special pellets. "No extra room would be needed," Woodall said, "and the added weight would be the equivalent of an extra passenger, albeit a pretty large extra passenger."The hydrogen would then power an internal combustion engine or a fuel cell stack. "It's a simple matter to convert ordinary internal combustion engines to run on hydrogen," Woodall said. "All you have to do is replace the gasoline fuel injector with a hydrogen injector." CLIP

Connie Fogal On The Corporate North American Union - Video: 54 min 23 sec - Apr 13, 2007
Description: Connie Fogal, the redoubtable leader of the Canadian Action Party, delivers a hard hitting and passionate warning to all who refuse to believe that our democracy is being usurped by an elite few and is being sold off, brick by brick, to the highest bidder. Our very own elected politicians are in collusion with powerful private corporate interests, working together behind closed doors to bring in the ‘Security and Prosperity Partnership’ by “stealth” – as one proponent of the agreement put it – without public knowledge or consultation. In this presentation, she argues that Canadian sovereignty is very much at stake and she urges us to become informed and to take action before we ignorantly surrender all of our freedoms and public services to foreign corporate rule.

Yummy! More pesticide (May 25, 2007)
Send your message to Stephen Harper. You can make a difference! It's hard to believe, but the Harper government, dedicated to ever greater integration of Canada into the US, wants to "harmonize" the types and levels of pesticide residue allowed on fruits and vegetables and in dairy products with those of the US and Mexico. It's part of plans being made behind closed doors to streamline Canadian standards with often lower U.S. standards, instead of improving our standards to those adopted by the European Union. Our government apparently sees regulations to protect public health as a "free trade irritant." And pesticides are just the beginning. Some 300 regulatory regimes are going through the same race-to-the-bottom process under the auspices of the Security and Prosperity Partnership - so-called "deep integration" - signed by Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. Please take 60 seconds to send a message to Prime Minister Harper right now urging him to put the health of people and the environment first. You can make a difference. -- Read also the Edmonton Journal editorial on this issue. HERE is an excerpt: "As understanding grows of the health risks of persistent organic pollutants -- chemical compounds that are found in at least nine common pesticides, and that accumulate on plants, in water, in the soil and, over the years, in humans and other animals -- the only reasonable action of the government would be to press for their reduced use. (...) The Harper government needs to step back from fast-tracked talks with the U.S. on a Security and Prosperity Partnership and convey to the other side that, while harmonizing standards is a good idea, dropping them to the lowest common denominator is not." RAINFOREST ALERT: Stop WWF's Betrayal of the Earth's Last Ancient Forests
WWF is the world's largest ancient forest logging apologist; actively promoting questionable "certified, sustainable" logging in Guyana, Russia and -- and may be the World's greatest threat facing endangered ancient forests. For many years the international conservation group WWF has supported Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification that first-time logging of ancient primary and old-growth forests is "sustainable". Millions of hectares of intact, large rainforest ecosystems have been and are being heavily industrially logged for the first time with WWF and FSC's stamp of approval. Ecological Internet (EI) recently reported upon Samling of Malaysia's activities in Guyana under the name of Barama, which received significant international bank financing based upon assurances provided by WWF and an FSC certificate of good forest management. Sadly, WWF's partnering with this particular rainforest destroyer in Guyana is not at all unique. Similar large-scale, often illegal and highly socially and environmentally destructive logging of ancient forests in the Congo basin countries, Russia, and Indonesia continue with the blessing of WWF and FSC as their official policy. WWF's greenwashing, and propagation and subsidizing of the myth of "sustainable ancient forest logging", may be the greatest threat to the world's remaining ancient forests. TAKE ACTION:

Poll Shows Opposition to Iraq War at All-Time High
Americans now view the war in Iraq more negatively than at any time since the war began, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. Six in 10 Americans surveyed say the United States should have stayed out of Iraq, and more than three in four say that things are going badly there - including nearly half who say things are going very badly, the poll found. Still, the majority of Americans support continuing to finance the war, as long as the Iraqi government meets specific goals. President Bush's approval ratings remain near the lowest point of his more than six years in office. Thirty percent of poll respondents approve of the job he's doing overall, while 63 percent disapprove. Majorities of those polled disapprove of Mr. Bush's handling of the situation in Iraq, of foreign policy, of immigration, of the economy and of the campaign against terrorism. (...) More Americans - 72 percent - now say that "generally, things in the country are seriously off on the wrong track" than at any time since the Times/CBS News poll began asking the question in 1983. The figure had been in the high 60's earlier this year. But the poll results made clear that the war continues to be the issue Americans are most worried about. Sixty-one percent of respondents now say that the United States should never have taken military action against Iraq, up from 51 percent in a CBS News poll in April and 58 percent in the same poll in January. Seventy-six percent say that things are going badly in the effort to bring stability and order to Iraq, including 47 percent who say they're going very badly. Mr. Bush warned today of still worse violence to come in Iraq in the months before Gen. David Petraeus is scheduled to report on progress there in September. "It could make August a tough month, because, you see, what they're going to try to do is kill as many innocent people as they can to try to influence the debate here at home," Mr. Bush said, referring to Al Qaeda and anti-American Iraqi militants. "Don't you find that interesting - I do - that they recognize that the death of innocent people could shake our will?" Deadly Illusions, Rest in Peace
"This week's cave-in on Capitol Hill - supplying a huge new jolt of funds for the horrific war effort in Iraq - is surprising only to those who haven't grasped our current circumstances.... No matter how many Democrats are in Congress, they won't end this war unless an anti-war movement develops enough grassroots strength to compel them to do so," writes Norman Solomon.

Bush Anoints Himself as the Insurer of Constitutional Government in Emergency (May 18, 2007)
With scarcely a mention in the mainstream media, President Bush has ordered up a plan for responding to a catastrophic attack. In a new National Security Presidential Directive, Bush lays out his plans for dealing with a "catastrophic emergency." Under that plan, he entrusts himself with leading the entire federal government, not just the Executive Branch. And he gives himself the responsibility "for ensuring constitutional government." He laid this all out in a document entitled " National Security Presidential Directive/NSPD 51" and "Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD-20." The White House released it on May 9.Other than a discussion on Daily Kos led off by a posting by Leo Fender, and a pro-forma notice in a couple of mainstream newspapers, this document has gone unremarked upon. The subject of the document is entitled "National Continuity Policy." It defines a "catastrophic emergency" as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government function." This could mean another 9/11, or another Katrina, or a major earthquake in California, I imagine, since it says it would include "localized acts of nature, accidents, and technological or attack-related emergencies." US government fans homeland terrorism fear (May 15, 2007)
Washington consensus plans for martial law, nuclear terror holocaust, behind closed doors - The US government and Washington elites are aggressively ramping up their "war on terrorism" rhetoric and propaganda, stoking fear and paranoia in order to bolster their war agenda, and reinvigorate the mass public perception of new and growing "homegrown terrorism" threats to the US homeland. The next phase of America’s war abroad (under the management of a post-Bush neocon/neoliberal consensus), and the deepening militarization of the US homeland towards a full police state, are well underway.Who or what was behind the Fort Dix Six?On May 8, 2007, six foreign-born Muslims were arrested during an attempt to purchase assault weapons, and accused of plotting a terror attack on Fort Dix (New Jersey), as well as an assault on a Pennsylvania Navy installation. While evidence regarding this case continues to unfold, what is clear is that the FBI and US intelligence had been infiltrated and monitored over an extensive period, as early as January 2006. An unnamed "shadowy informer", likely an intelligence asset, is the key figure behind this operation and the arrest. An objective analysis of the Fort Dix incident leads to questions about US military-intelligence involvement, and the use of the incident as a pretext: "There is no doubt that the actions of the US military around the world are provoking a level of disgust and anger that could well produce misguided terrorist attacks within the US itself. Nonetheless, the various terrorist ‘plots’ exposed by the Bush administration have virtually without exception been characterized by a similar lack of any real preparation for violence combined with the central role of a covert informant/agent provocateur."In each of these cases, the supposed conspiracy has been heavily publicized in a transparent bid to justify the ongoing military occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan and to create a climate of fear in order to suppress democratic rights in the US itself. (...) In a series of closed-door sessions in Washington, a panel of high level government and military officials, security "experts" are constructing a homeland security plan that would include martial law and the suspension of civil liberties. Admiral Fallon Says NO To Third Carrier Group In Gulf (5-16-7)
Commander's Veto Sank Threatening Gulf Buildup- WASHINGTON (IPS) -- Admiral William Fallon, then President George W. Bush's nominee to head the Central Command (CENTCOM), expressed strong opposition in February to an administration plan to increase the number of carrier strike groups in the Persian Gulf from two to three and vowed privately there would be no war against Iran as long as he was chief of CENTCOM, according to sources with access to his thinking.Fallon's resistance to the proposed deployment of a third aircraft carrier was followed by a shift in the Bush administration's Iran policy in February and March away from increased military threats and toward diplomatic engagement with Iran. That shift, for which no credible explanation has been offered by administration officials, suggests that Fallon's resistance to a crucial deployment was a major factor in the intra-administration struggle over policy toward Iran. The plan to add a third carrier strike group in the Gulf had been a key element in a broader strategy discussed at high levels to intimidate Iran by a series of military moves suggesting preparations for a military strike. Admiral Fallon's resistance to a further buildup of naval striking power in the Gulf apparently took the Bush administration by surprise. CLIP

My Response to The Dept. of Evil: 'All Of You Must Die' by John Tibayan - 5/19/07
This story is about my reaction to a political satire article I read in the The Onion Newspaper. (...) The Dept. of Evil: 'All Of You Must Die' satire is a sobering reminder that yes, things have gotten that bad. There is so much corruption and dishonesty in the US government that the satire presents a scenario where Satan himself (in a business suit) presents his political platform to "kill everyone!" Robert Fisk: A front-row seat for this Lebanese tragedy (22 May 2007)
There is something obscene about watching the siege of Nahr el-Bared. The old Palestinian camp - home to 30,000 lost souls who will never go "home" - basks in the Mediterranean sunlight beyond a cluster of orange orchards. Soldiers of the Lebanese army, having retaken their positions on the main road north, idle their time aboard their old personnel carriers. Palestinians seek end to Lebanon standoff (May 28)
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Palestinian leaders on Monday tried to end a bloody standoff between the Lebanese army and Islamist militants holed up in a refugee camp - the battleground for Lebanon's worst fighting since the civil war. Worried that violence could spill over to other Palestinian camps, the government is giving the Palestinian factions time to try to deal with the Fatah al-Islam group, which has been battling the army around the Nahr al-Bared camp since May 20."What is slowing down the army is the realization that we could have a nationwide problem," said Timur Goksel, an expert on security affairs in Lebanon. "This would mainly be a reaction if the Palestinian civilian suffering was heavy."Lebanon's worst internal fighting since the 1975-1990 civil war has killed at least 78 people, including 33 soldiers, 27 militants and 18 civilians.Sporadic gunfire continued in the early hours of Monday. Israel Hits Gaza With More Strikes, Seven Wounded (22 May 2007)

Israel OKs ground operations in Gaza (May 28)
JERUSALEM - Israeli leaders authorized the army on Monday to intensify ground operations against Palestinians in Gaza who have been pounding border towns with deadly rocket fire. Military officials said, however, that a major thrust into the densely populated coastal strip is not in the works. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appealed to militant groups to take the first step in forging a fresh truce with Israel, saying the alternative would be the collapse of the Palestinian coalition government between the Islamic militant group Hamas and Abbas' moderate Fatah faction.Hamas says it is responsible for the recent wave of rocket attacks, in which two Israeli civilians have been killed. The attacks have prompted 12 days of intensive Israeli airstrikes that have killed about 50 Palestinians, most of them militants.Under the new Israeli directive, larger numbers of troops will be able to enter Gaza on pinpoint missions, but no widespread campaign is imminent, military officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss policy.Past large-scale offensives have failed to quell rocket fire. Australia-US war games will be devastating for the environment

Code named Talisman Sabre 07, it will be the largest military exercises ever staged in Australia in peacetime.Twelve thousand Australian soldiers and nearly l4,000 US troops and sailors will take place in bombarding our shores and fragile landscape, storming our beaches, gunning down 'terrorists' in the newly built urban guerrilla warfare training centre, and testing their latest laser-guided missiles and 'smart' bombs in some of the most pristine wilderness on the planet. Environmentalist and documentary filmmaker David Bradbury, who is campaigning against the war games, says: “Idyllic Shoalwater Bay near Rockhampton will cop it all - live aerial bombing, ship to shore naval firings, underwater depth charges exploded in areas where turtles and dugong breed, nuclear subs using high level sonar frequency which zaps the hearing of sea life and mammals, nuclear aircraft carriers inside the so-called Great Barrier Reef marine national park, land-based artillery firings blasting the hell out of areas where the most amazing biodiversity in Australia is to be found.” (Shoalwater Bay covers 740,000 hectares and is almost unique in our climatic landscape because it is a cross over point for tropical, sub tropical and temperate zones giving rise to an amazing variety of many species of flora and wildlife, birds, sea creatures etc).David says anyone who has seen Al Gore's film (An Inconvenient Truth) has to ask why are we allowing such madness to take place and wanton misuse of resources to further add to the huge level of CO2 put up into the atmosphere in exercises such as these at a time when we all should be combining forces in the war for our survival. He adds: “I am still disgusted that Australia supports the US so sycophantically in this bullshit War on Terror. “Our unholy crusade at the latest count had 653,000 innocent people in Iraq killed - even if its half this number comprehensively and methodically counted number, its still a national and immoral disgrace that we have lent our name and support to such a huge number of innocent people murdered in our nation's name.“The Talisman Sabre exercises are a con for blatant continuing militarism of a similar vein post Afghanistan and Iraq. “We are now about to pollute our own most pristine areas, far away from the centres of population by letting the US military test their latest weapons here. Illegal Aerosol Spraying Operations Over United Kingdom Airspace (20 May 2007)
Derbyshire, UK – A new report has been published which challenges certain basic assumptions about climate change. The report has been written by an independent lay researcher, and is backed by over 20 signatories from diverse backgrounds. The report presents significant ground-based and space-based data which indicates that ongoing illegal and unacknowledged aerosol spraying from aircraft could be affecting our climate. Copies of the report have been sent to Greenpeace, the Civil Aviation Authority, The Royal Air Force and DEFRA, challenging them to investigate the data themselves. – An independent lay researcher, with a background in Software Engineering, from Derbyshire, UK, has published a new report which documents ongoing illegal aerosol spraying activities which could be affecting our climate, our health or both. (...) David, who is a signatory to the report, said, "For me, the fact many of us around the country notice particularly heavy days of this phenomena and have recently managed to link the activity via satellite imaging systems, is some sort of concrete evidence that something is going on here. This evidence alone should be sufficient to at least initiate an enquiry of some sort." CLIP The report can be viewed, online at

Africa Feels the Warming It Didn't Cause
Global warming isn't just a matter of melting icebergs and polar bears chasing after them. It's also Lake Chad drying up, the glaciers of Mt. Kilimanjaro disappearing, increasing extreme weather, conflict and hungry people throughout Africa. According to a landmark effort to assess the risks of global warming, Africa, by far the lowest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, is projected to be among the regions hardest hit by environmental change. (...) Globally, sea levels are projected to possibly rise three feet by the end of the 21st century. Three of the five coastal areas in the world projected to be most at risk of flooding are in Africa. In addition, as temperatures rise and enlarge already arid regions, resources were likely to decrease - and human conflict could increase. "We're already seeing growing conflicts over water resources in Africa and I am worried those conflicts are going to get worse. The Darfur situation has a water component. Definitely a resource component," Glieck said. Climate refugees - people responding to long and short-term climate changes - also pose a risk. "You'd tend to see more extremes," said Kathleen Miller of the National Center for Atmospheric Research and an author of the report's section on water resources and management. Rainstorms will tend to be harder, flash floods more likely. Africa already has plenty of refugees, any additional stress could make things worse, Miller said. Certainly, the greatest risks are unpredictable disasters like storm surges, flash floods, and tropical cyclones. CLIP

Antarctica: Unprecedented Western Ice Melt and CO2-Saturated Southern Ocean (May 18, 2007)
Boulder, Colorado - The Washington Post, on May 16, 2007, published an editorial by three eminent American scientists in which these words were stated: “Climate change is the most critical problem the Earth has ever faced.”That frank statement about global warming came from the Director of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California-San Diego; the Dean of the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University; and the Acting Director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Their combined words came in their appeal for more NASA funding to sustain and increase the satellites now watching Earth, gathering data that describe our planet’s rapid change as the Earth heats up. One of their big concerns was satellite data in January this year that showed higher ocean temperatures are reducing the growth of microscopic plants and animals that are at the heart of the marine food chain. Plankton decline would mean lack of food for a wide range of marine animals. Plankton absorbs half the Earth's CO2, generates half our oxygen, and nourishes all sea life. Animal and plant extinction rates are already accelerating. Eminent Harvard biologist, Edward O. Wilson, predicts that in the face of global warming half of all plant and animal species will be extinct by 2100 – that’s only 90 years away. And now comes a sobering satellite study that shows it was warm enough for a week or two in January 2005 for western Antarctic ice to melt over an area as big as California. Such a huge ice melt in western Antarctica is unprecedented and could mean that global warming is even getting to the thick ice of the South Pole. Right after the release of that satellite data, the highly respected British University of East Anglia’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research had its analysis of carbon dioxide content in the South Ocean around Antarctica published in a May 2007 issue of the journal, Science. Because the Antarctic South Ocean is so cold, it has been considered one ocean body that could absorb a lot of atmospheric carbon dioxide; and therefore, could help balance out CO2 emissions from cars and industries. Ocean waters that absorb CO2 are called “sinks.”But the U. K. scientists found that, “data from 1981 through 2004 show the CO2 sink is already full of carbon dioxide. We find this really quite alarming.” CLIP

Chinese bid to lift ban on tiger trade will result in extinction, say conservationists (18 May 2007)
China's tiger farmers are stepping up pressure on the government in Beijing to lift the country's ban on trading products made from tigers, which conservationists believe could signal the end for the endangered big cats. The tiger breeders are seeking support from India in their efforts to end the ban.The trade in tiger products is big business - the black market is worth hundreds of millions of pounds every year. Tiger bone is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat joint ailments such as rheumatoid arthritis, while wine made from tiger blood is believed to give potency. Nearly every part of the tiger can be used for medicine, and its skin is prized in Tibet, making it a lucrative commodity for poachers in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and China. The Chinese government banned the trade in tiger parts in 1993, but there are reports of tiger skins and other parts being sold on the black market in China, and restaurants selling dishes containing tiger. Animal Extinction - the greatest threat to mankind (30 April 2007)
By the end of the century half of all species will be extinct. Does that matter? (...) Disappearing World -- More than 16,000 species of the world's mammals, birds, plants and other organisms are at present officially regarded as threatened with extinction to one degree or another, according to the Red List. Maintained by the Swiss-based World Conservation Union (usually known by the initials IUCN), the Red List is one of the gloomiest books in the world, and is set to get even gloomier.Since 1963 it has attempted to set out the conservation status of the planet's wildlife, in a series of categories which now range from Extinct (naturally), through Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable and Near-Threatened, and finishing with Least Concern. The numbers in the "threatened" categories are steadily rising. Taxonomists at the IUCN regularly attempt to update the list, but that is a massive job to undertake - there are about 5,000 mammal species in the world and about 10,000 birds, but more than 300,000 types of plant, and undoubtedly well over a million insect species, and perhaps many more. Some species, such as beetles living in the rainforest canopy, could become extinct before they are even known to science. The last Red List update, released in May last year, looked at 40,168 species and considered 16,118 to be threatened - including 7,725 animals of all types (mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects etc) and 8,390 plants.

Birds decimated by West Nile virus (May 17, 2007)
WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. researchers have determined the West Nile virus has apparently caused the continental-scale decline of seven species of birds across North America. The finding by Shannon LaDeau and colleagues at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington is said to be a stark example of the potential havoc that can be wreaked by invasive species, and should impact future conservation strategies.Researchers used 26 years of Breeding Bird Survey data to determine the impact of the West Nile virus on 20 North American potential bird hosts. They found declines in seven species from four families, including the American crow population, which has dropped by 45 percent since the virus emerged. The declines occurred as the virus moved across North America and were significantly correlated with the intensity of transmission to humans. Only two of the seven species recovered to pre-virus levels by 2005, and that, the researchers said, is likely to have resulting effects for various ecosystems.

How to save the planet (19 April 2007) !!!
According to some eco-extremists, the only way to really make a difference is to stop breeding and let the human race die out. Guy Adams reports - Close your eyes and imagine that it's the year 3000. For the first time since the dinosaurs, large animals rule Planet Earth. In the ruins of its former civilisation, a forlorn species called mankind finds itself marooned on the brink of extinction. This sounds like apocalyptic stuff, the subject of a Darwinian disaster movie, perhaps. But to a small and dedicated group of environmentalists, the disappearance of our species would mark the triumph of a long-running battle to save the planet. The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement is an informal organisation that has spent the past decade campaigning for the phasing out of the entire human race. It is, if you like, the pressure group to end all pressure groups.Followers crusade under the slogan "may we live long and die out", and advocate a lemming-like approach to the problem of overpopulation. Mankind, they say, is a destructive force at the root of every environmental problem now facing the planet; as a result, it should now commit biological hara-kiri. This may sound like some sort of Monty Python spoof, but it's deadly serious. Even the organisation's shorthand has stern method to it: members call the group VHEMT, "pronounced vehement, because that's what we are".Their logic runs as follows. All human activity, from farming and urbanisation to turning on the tap or flicking a switch, harms our biosphere. The more humans, the more damage we inevitably inflict; only extinction will reduce mankind's impact on Mother Earth to nothing. As a result, VHEMT's supporters forswear procreation, and campaign for their friends and relatives to do the same. It's a novel idea, but one that may (if you think about it) just mark the first move towards an idea that will transform humanity. CLIP

Most Toxic West Coast Algae Bloom in Years Is Killing Sea Lions, Dolphins and Sea Birds (May 14, 2007)
"The concentration of the toxin is so great this year that we haven't had a chance to react to it. Normally we are able to flush out the toxin with a treatment regimen to the birds we care for. This year they're just coming in dead." - Lisa Birkle, Asst. Dir., Wetland and Wildlife Care Center, Huntington Beach, Calif. Kirsten Sedlick, an animal care supervisor at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach, tried to help a rescued sea lion through a seizure. It's one of the sea lions rescued off local beaches with domoic acid poisoning that causes brain damage and is often fatal. California issued a quarantine May 10, 2007, on locally harvested shellfish, sardines, lobster and other seafood after a huge sea algae bloom has released domoic acid into the Pacific Ocean between San Francisco and San Diego. More than a thousand sea lions, at least fifty dolphins and hundreds of sea birds have died and washed up on California beaches, while many more marine animals, including whales, are ill. In mammals, including humans, domoic acid acts as a neurotoxin, causing short-term memory loss, brain damage, and death in severe cases. In marine mammals, domoic acid typically causes seizures and tremors. Experts say little can be done to save infected animals once the toxin causes brain damage.

Congress - Force the CDC to investigate Morgellons Disease Petition
The undersigned citizens of the United States urgently request a U.S.government oversight hearing to determine why the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is taking so long to investigate the cause of Morgellons Disease. The CDC has admitted that it has been receiving citizen complaints of symptoms of this disease for over a decade. Letters from senators from a number of states to the CDC calling for action on this apparently infectious condition that now affects about 9000 families have resulted in NO apparent investigation thus far by the CDC.Recently, a government oversight hearing was called for to investigate complaints of contaminated pet food and determined that there was system wide failure by the FDA to protect pets from contaminated foods. We believe ill and suffering individuals are at least as important as sick pets. There were a number of pet deaths attributable to tainted pet food. At least 15 persons have died directly or indirectly after being affected by Morgellons disease and thousands more are suffering and becoming disabled. Most were misdiagnosed as being delusional by dermatologists, largely untrained in psychiatric conditions, using badly flawed inaccurate and unsupportable assertions in the literature. Scientists have identified some of the physical manifestations of this disease using dermatoscopes, microscopes, DNA analysis and chromatography. The manifestations of this disease are real, multi systemic and progressive, not delusional. However the etiologic agent has so far not matched any known human pathogen. There is no cure. Time is of the essence since one half of the 9000 people identifying themselves as ill with this disease have done so within in the past six months. This may represent an emerging epidemic. In our opinion, the CDC is failing in its obligation of"controlling the introduction and spread of infectious diseases," and we, the taxpayers have a right to know why this is happening and to have the current apparent failure of the CDC addressed immediately.

Google Unveils "Universal Search" (May. 22, 2007),8599,1624050,00.html
Google something, anything. Behind the famous search box, you'll find a very different Google at play. The company's hyper-accurate algorithms, (you know, those mathematical formulas that deliver answers in a fraction of a second), now include video, maps, books, news, images and blogs. The additional features are rolled into all Google's search results, ranked by relevancy and presented in a complete list starting on the main home page. Previously, users needed to go to the company's specialized channels like "Video," "Maps," "Books" or "Images" to see results from different kinds of media. Google calls the tweaks to its search engine "universal search." It's all part of an ongoing, fundamental shift for the Internet giant, one the company hopes will enhance the hundreds of millions of searches it performs daily. CLIP

Decoding The Past - episode: Doomsday 2012: The End of Days
There are prophecies and oracles from around the world that all seem to point to December 21, 2012 as doomsday. The ancient Mayan Calendar, the medieval predictions of Merlin, the Book of Revelation and the Chinese oracle of the I Ching all point to this specific date as the end of civilization. A new technology called "The Web-Bot Project" makes massive scans of the internet as a means of forecasting the future... and has turned up the same dreaded date: 2012. Skeptics point to a long history of "Failed Doomsdays", but many oracles of doom throughout history have a disturbingly accurate track record. As the year 2012 ticks ever closer we'll speculate if there are any reasons to believe these doomsayers.

Surprising Truth Behind the Construction of the Great Pyramids (May 19, 2007)
(...) Egyptologists are consistently confronted by unanswered questions: How is it possible that some of the blocks are so perfectly matched that not even a human hair can be inserted between them? Why, despite the existence of millions of tons of stone, carved presumably with copper chisels, has not one copper chisel ever been found on the Giza Plateau? Although Barsoum's research has not answered all of these questions, his work provides insight into some of the key questions. For example, it is now more likely than not that the tops of the pyramids are cast, as it would have been increasingly difficult to drag the stones to the summit. Also, casting would explain why some of the stones fit so closely together. Still, as with all great mysteries, not every aspect of the pyramids can be explained. How the Egyptians hoisted 70-ton granite slabs halfway up the great pyramid remains as mysterious as ever. Why do the results of Barsoum's research matter most today? Two words: Earth cements."How energy intensive and/or complicated can a 4,500 year old technology really be? The answer to both questions is not very," Barsoum explains."The basic raw materials used for this early form of concrete-limestone, lime, and diatomaceous earth-can be found virtually anywhere in the world," he adds. "Replicating this method of construction would be cost effective, long lasting, and much more environmentally friendly than the current building material of choice: Portland cement that alone pumps roughly 6 billion tons of CO2 annually into the atmosphere when it's manufactured.""Ironically," says Barsoum, "this study of 4,500 year old rocks is not about the past, but about the future."

The following message was left recently by Ron Riley ( in the ERN guestbook. It may be of interest to some...

Greetings Jean,

I am writing you in reference to the article about the new crises that may arise due to farmers now planting fuel/energy crops. As many researchers probably already know, when Mr. Ford invented the first automobile, he designed it to run on HEMP oil, and envisioned American farmers to become very prosperous because of it. Somewhere along the line, someone decided to use the waste by-product of crude oil and engineered automobiles to run off of this waste and now look at us. Why is nobody mentioning HEMP plants when they discuss these new energy crops? Is it possibly because the plant is a serious threat to the establishment and its international corporations? See, this great plant would replace many products like nylon, cotton, tree paper and of course crude oil waste. Feel free to post this in your next newsletter to see what other truth seekers/revealers are thinking.

AND MY REPLY WAS (in part): "I entirely agree with you that cultivating hemp and using this plant to create all sorts of end products as well as an energy source would be great and I do believe like you that historically, some people more interested to push for oil for their own bottom line blocked it from becoming widely cultivated and used." I also asked him if there is a website and additional info on hemp he would recommend, and his reply was (in part):

"I located a great web site that has a wealth of information about the HEMP plant and its potential for energy usage. Here is the link, and the article I found with the most answers was Hemp and The New Energy Technologies. I also downloaded a book titled, "Anslingerian politics: The History of Anti-Marijuana Sentiment in Federal Law and How Harry Anslinger's Anti-Marijuana Politics Continue to Prevent the FDA and Other Medical Experts from Studying Marijuana's Medical Utility". The book provides a detailed and factual history of this "miracle" plant. Enjoy the article and information and please continue to do what you do. I have been reading your newsletters for awhile and all I can say is thank you for assisting me in my quest for spiritual knowledge."

Palast Exclusive: The Goods on Goodling and the Keys to the Kingdom And The No Longer 'Missing' Rove Emails Revealing the Cagey Scheme to Steal 2008...

by Greg Palast

This Monica revealed something hotter --- much hotter --- than a stained blue dress. In her opening testimony yesterday before the House Judiciary Committee, Monica Goodling, the blonde-ling underling to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Department of Justice Liaison to the White House, dropped The Big One....And the Committee members didn't even know it.

Goodling testified that Gonzales' Chief of Staff, Kyle Sampson, perjured himself, lying to the committee in earlier testimony. The lie: Sampson denied Monica had told him about Tim Griffin's "involvement in 'caging' voters" in 2004.

Huh?? Tim Griffin? "Caging"???

The perplexed committee members hadn't a clue --- and asked no substantive questions about it thereafter. Karl Rove is still smiling. If the members had gotten the clue, and asked the right questions, they would have found "the keys to the kingdom," they thought they were looking for. They dangled right in front of their perplexed faces.

The keys: the missing emails --- and missing link --- that could send Griffin and his boss, Rove, to the slammer for a long, long time.

Kingdom enough for ya?

But what's 'caging' and why is it such a dreadful secret that lawyer Sampson put his license to practice and his freedom on the line to cover Tim Griffin's involvement in it? Because it's a felony. And a big one.
Here's how caging worked, and along with Griffin's thoughtful emails themselves you'll understand it all in no time.

The Bush-Cheney operatives sent hundreds of thousands of letters marked "Do not forward" to voters' homes. Letters returned ("caged") were used as evidence to block these voters' right to cast a ballot on grounds they were registered at phony addresses. Who were the evil fakers? Homeless men, students on vacation and --- you got to love this --- American soldiers. Oh yeah: most of them are Black voters.
Why weren't these African-American voters home when the Republican letters arrived? The homeless men were on park benches, the students were on vacation --- and the soldiers were overseas. Go to Baghdad, lose your vote. Mission Accomplished.

How do I know? I have the caging lists...

I have them because they are attached to the emails Rove insists can't be found. I have the emails. 500 of them --- sent to our team at BBC after the Rove-bots accidentally sent them to a web domain owned by our friend John Wooden.

Here's what you need to know --- and the Committee would have discovered, if only they'd asked:

1. 'Caging' voters is a crime, a go-to-jail felony.

2. Griffin wasn't "involved" in the caging, Ms. Goodling. Griffin, Rove's right-hand man (right-hand claw), was directing the illegal purge and challenge campaign. How do I know? It's in the email I got. Thanks. And it's posted below.

3. On December 7, 2006, the ragin', cagin' Griffin was named, on Rove's personal demand, US Attorney for Arkansas. Perpetrator became prosecutor.

The committee was perplexed about Monica's panicked admission and accusations about the caging list because the US press never covered it. That's because, as Griffin wrote to Goodling in yet another email (dated February 6 of this year, and also posted below), their caging operation only made the news on BBC London: busted open, Griffin bitched, by that "British reporter," Greg Palast.

There's no pride in this. Our BBC team broke the story at the top of the nightly news everywhere on the planet --- except the USA --- only because America's news networks simply refused to cover this evidence of the electoral coup d'etat that chose our President in 2004.

And now, not bothering to understand the astonishing revelation in Goodling's confessional, they are missing the real story behind the firing of the US attorneys. It's not about removing prosecutors disloyal to Bush, it's about replacing those who refused to aid the theft of the vote in 2004 with those prepared to burgle it again in 2008.

Now that they have the keys, let's see if they can put them in the right door. The clock is ticking ladies and gents...

(Ed Note: You can easily contact your Congress Members to call and/or email them this information by clicking here. Let them know they need to take action. Now. And feel free to point them towards this article, URL:

The Future of America Has Been Stolen (May 24th, 2007)
Investigative reporter Greg Palast says 4.5 million votes will be shoplifted in 2008, thanks largely to the “Rove-bots” that have been placed in the Justice Department following the U.S. Attorney firings. Being the guy who uncovered the voter “purge lists” of 2000 that disenfranchised black voters, he’s worth listening to, even if the mainstream press chooses not to. This time around, he claims to have 500 emails that the House subpoenaed and Karl Rove claims were deleted forever. They prove definitively, says Palast, that the Justice Department is infested with operatives taking orders from Rove to steal upcoming elections for Republicans and permanently alter the Department. The “clownocracy” of Bush and Rove is criminal and even evil in its attempts to steal past and future elections, according to Palast, and can only be stopped if “Democrats…find their souls and find their balls.” In an updated new version of his best-selling book, Armed Madhouse, Palast lays out the case for the future theft of the presidency, along with lots of other Executive malfeasance. I chatted with him about the role of the Justice Department in this scheme, and what it means for the viability of our “democracy.” CLIP

What Congress Really Approved: Benchmark No. 1: Privatizing Iraq's Oil for US Companies

By Ann Wright --- t r u t h o u t | Guest Contributor

26 May 2007

On Thursday, May 24, the US Congress voted to continue the war in Iraq. The members called it "supporting the troops." I call it stealing Iraq's oil - the second largest reserves in the world. The "benchmark," or goal, the Bush administration has been working on furiously since the US invaded Iraq is privatization of Iraq's oil. Now they have Congress blackmailing the Iraqi Parliament and the Iraqi people: no privatization of Iraqi oil, no reconstruction funds.

This threat could not be clearer. If the Iraqi Parliament refuses to pass the privatization legislation, Congress will withhold US reconstruction funds that were promised to the Iraqis to rebuild what the United States has destroyed there. The privatization law, written by American oil company consultants hired by the Bush administration, would leave control with the Iraq National Oil Company for only 17 of the 80 known oil fields. The remainder (two-thirds) of known oil fields, and all yet undiscovered ones, would be up for grabs by the private oil companies of the world (but guess how many would go to United States firms - given to them by the compliant Iraqi government.)

No other nation in the Middle East has privatized its oil. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Iran give only limited usage contracts to international oil companies for one or two years. The $12 billion dollar "Support the Troops" legislation passed by Congress requires Iraq, in order to get reconstruction funds from the United States, to privatize its oil resources and put them up for long term (20- to 30-year) contracts.

What does this "Support the Troops" legislation mean for the United States military? Supporting our troops has nothing to do with this bill, other than keeping them there for another 30 years to protect US oil interests. It means that every military service member will need Arabic language training. It means that every soldier and Marine would spend most of his or her career in Iraq. It means that the fourteen permanent bases will get new Taco Bells and Burger Kings! Why? Because the US military will be protecting the US corporate oilfields leased to US companies by the compliant Iraqi government. Our troops will be the guardians of US corporate interests in Iraq for the life of the contracts - for the next thirty years.

With the Bush administration's "Support the Troops" bill and its benchmarks, primarily Benchmark No. 1, we finally have the reason for the US invasion of Iraq: to get easily accessible, cheap, high-grade Iraq oil for US corporations.

Now the choice is for US military personnel and their families to decide whether they want their loved ones to be physically and emotionally injured to protect not our national security, but the financial security of the biggest corporate barons left in our country - the oil companies.

It's a choice for only our military families, because most non-military Americans do not really care whether our volunteer military spends its time protecting corporate oil to fuel our one-person cars. Of course, when a tornado, hurricane, flood or other natural disaster hits in our hometown, we want our National Guard unit back. But on a normal day, who remembers the 180,000 US military or the 150,000 US private contractors in Iraq?

Since the "Surge" began in January, over 500 Americans and 15,000 Iraqis have been killed. By the time September 2007 rolls around for the administration's review of the "surge" plan, another 400 Americans will be dead, as well as another 12,000 Iraqis.

How much more can our military and their families take?

Ann Wright served 29 years in the US Army and US Army Reserves and retired as a colonel. She served 16 years in the US diplomatic corps in Nicaragua, Grenada, Somalia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Micronesia and Mongolia. She resigned from the US Department of State in March, 2003 in opposition to the war on Iraq.

Iraq was about oil: see the new "Hydrocarbon Law"
(...) The actual draft law has nothing to do with sharing the oil revenue,"says former Iraqi oil minister Issam Al Chalabi, in a phone interview from Amman, Jordan. The law aims to set a framework for investment by outside oil companies, including favorable production-sharing agreements that are typically used to reward companies for taking on risk, he says."We know the oil is there. Geological studies have been made for decades on these oil fields, so why would we let them [international firms] have a share of the oil?" he adds. "Iraqis will say this is solid proof that Americans have staged the war ... because of this law."(...) At an oil price of $40 per barrel, Iraq stands to lose between $74 billion and $194 billion over the lifetime of the proposed contracts(2), from only the first 12 oilfields to be developed. These estimates, based on conservative assumptions, represent between two and seven times the current Iraqi government budget. Under the likely terms of the contracts, oil company rates of return from investing in Iraq would range from 42% to 162%, far in excess of usual industry minimum target of around 12% return on investment. You would think that after after all the official and unofficial lies that came out of the Washington spin machine during the 2002-03 run-up to the war in Iraq, newspapers would be a little more skeptical about similarly unsupported, high-level but anonymous and bellicose allegations about Iran (or anyone else).

And you would doubly think that about a newspaper that, day in and day out, is one of the best in the world: Britain's Guardian.

You'd think...but you would be wrong:
Iran is secretly forging ties with al-Qaida elements and Sunni Arab militias in Iraq in preparation for a summer showdown with coalition forces intended to tip a wavering US Congress into voting for full military withdrawal, US officials say.

"Iran is fighting a proxy war in Iraq and it's a very dangerous course for them to be following. They are already committing daily acts of war against US and British forces," a senior US official in Baghdad warned. "They [Iran] are behind a lot of high-profile attacks meant to undermine US will and British will, such as the rocket attacks on Basra palace and the Green Zone [in Baghdad]. The attacks are directed by the Revolutionary Guard who are connected right to the top [of the Iranian government]."

The story does have another source - another anonymous U.S. official, but in Washington:
"Tehran is behaving like a racecourse gambler. They're betting on all the horses in the race, even on people they fundamentally don't trust," a senior administration official in Washington said. "They don't know what the outcome will be in Iraq. So they're hedging their bets."

Boo! Scared yet?

Look, I think that reporting of the Iraq crisis should be as aggressive as possible, and that obviously includes talking to American officials in Washington and in Baghdad. And, the situation in the region has become quite volatile since our decision to invade it, and no doubt Iran is a player, but...

I can also tell you as a journalist with 26 years of experience behind me that this story is the biggest load of crap - and that's not a phrase I would use loosely - I've ever seen in my life. Two unnamed government officials as sources, and a perfunctary denial from an Iranian officials in the last paragraph - and that's it?

This is a stunning allegation - so stunning because it really makes no sense. Iran's government does have close ties with some of Iraq's Shiite leaders that we also seem to be propping up these days, but it is the bitter enemy of the Sunni forces that these unnamed Bush spinmeisters now claim they are also supporting. If such a bizarre reversal had taken place, and I were to write a story about it, I would be sure to talk to outside experts on the region and to non-U.S. government sources - and quite them by name - to prove such an unlikely premise was in fact true.

That did not happen. And in fact, the story is so "out there" that it would be best ignored - except that you can't ignore it. For one thing, it's highlighted on the Drudge Report, and since Matt Drudge rules the world of Beltway media, it's going to become part of the public discourse. Also, in spite of its lack of even truthiness, let alone truth, it does prove - just like the top-selling "Christian book" calling for an American jihad against Tehran - the lengths that some of our leaders are still willing to go in formenting Armageddon.

But the fact that one of the world's better newspapers was willing to play along - or that my own colleagues in the mainstream media seem to never learn - is the saddest development of all. Didn't anyone watch "Buying the War"?

US and Iran Finally Meet to Discuss Iraq
Iran and the United States have finally broken the diplomatic ice with face-to-face talks in the search to stabilize Iraq, but the underlying divide between them seems as wide as ever. "The patriotism police" (April 20, 2007)
When I heard that Bill Moyers (left) was doing a program for PBS called "Buying the War" on the collapse of journalism before the Iraq war, I wondered how much new ground the show would really cover. It turns out, quite a bit -- this is mind-boggling:But Dan Rather, the former CBS anchor, admits, "I don't think there is any excuse for, you know, my performance and the performance of the press in general in the roll up to the war…We didn't dig enough. And we shouldn't have been fooled in this way." Bob Simon, who had strong doubts about evidence for war, was asked by Moyers if he pushed any of the top brass at CBS to "dig deeper," and he replies, "No, in all honesty, with a thousand mea culpas….nope, I don't think we followed up on this."Instead he covered the marketing of the war in a "softer" way, explaining to Moyers: "I think we all felt from the beginning that to deal with a subject as explosive as this, we should keep it, in a way, almost light – if that doesn't seem ridiculous."Moyers replies: "Going to war, almost light."Walter Isaacson is pushed hard by Moyers and finally admits, "We didn't question our sources enough." But why? Isaacson notes there was "almost a patriotism police" after 9/11 and when the network showed civilian casualties it would get phone calls from advertisers and the administration and "big people in corporations were calling up and saying, 'You're being anti-American here.'"

The Green Zone Follies Zone Follies

Falsifying Body Counts

“It used to be two a day and now it’s up to three. What am I talking about? The number of officially reported deaths per diem I don’t care if fifty bought the farm, the DoD reports for the public will show a maximum of two-three a day.

The families are notified, of course, but the public is only told that three GIs bought the farm (the wounded are never, never mentioned…over 50,000 serious injuries including permanent brain damage, missing legs and feet and so on).

Bush Puts The Lid On Any Bad News

As Bush goes down the chute to Hell, orders are now pouring out of DC about what can, and cannot, be said and done. I see about half of these but getting the specs out to the badly-fooled American public is getting harder and harder. I need to stress these lies are not the fault of the military commands but are specific orders from the Commander in Chief.

Commanders Censor Internet

Mail, incoming and outgoing, is thoroughly screened’ by official censors who use ‘knitting needles’ to open letters to allow the snoops to read, and copy if necessary, anything and everything the opener thinks could be ‘damaging to morale’ or ‘a serious breach of security.’

Also, the loathed internet is being brought under control here. An official, and highly classified, document I read this morning states that : ‘The damage done to the morale of our troops in the field by slackers and anti-government elements” inside the United States, and ‘suspected Russian agitators’ in collusion with ‘known Muslim fundamentalists’ from without ‘are causing serious erosion of morale among the troops in the field’ and must be stopped by any means necessary.’

Commanders Say The Censor Because Of Russian Spies

I am enclosing an official discussion about the rigid internet censorship. This is not secret but the daily flood of ferocious orders from the Pentagon certainly are.

We all personally doubt if the Russians are spying on us here. We ran them out when we took over the country and, by order, tried to shoot their evacuating ambassador and his staff, just like we tried to shoot the Italian female reporter. We failed in both cases. This is typical of what goes on around here. Failure is an orphan and we have boxcars full of orphans around here now.

American GIs repulsed By Arrogant Israeli Advisors

There is also trouble here about the Israelis here. Many of the our men loathe their ‘military representatives’ here because they are whining, demanding and downright repulsive. They want us to invade Iran or at least bomb it.

They aren’t getting their way but they have so much influence in the White House and Congress that they actually think they have a ring through the nose of the American media, and through them, the US citizens.

An Incident With A Jewish Major

There is, or rather was, an Israeli major here who is the worst of the lot. He had been running around the Green Zone demanding that ‘we do more’ to stop the spread of evil ‘ Iranian terrorists’ (although most of the resistance people are homegrown) and the other night, some GI tried to gut him outside the tennis court. They wanted to ripped him open like a fish but he screamed like a woman and the MPs got to the scene. They sewed him up and flew him out, under heavy guard, the very next day.

Jews Aren't So Mouthy Anymore

The others of his tribe are now going lightly and smiling to everyone. The general feeling here, among many officers and even the men, is that Israel started this war to suit her needs and Bush and Congress are so eager to please Tel Aviv that they go right along.

We Die For Israelis

And the dead keep being stuffed on planes and the families mourn. A friend in the CIC told me recently that they broke up a serious plan on the part of some EOD people to blow up the Israeli headquarters here. With its occupants!

My informant laughed and said, ‘It’s too bad we caught them…’ It’s sacrilegious things like this that have infuriated Bush and Cheney and have resulted in growing crackdown on ‘dissident elements’ here…especially to include the evil internet.

The Three Kidnapped Marines

And the men captured? Huge searches unrewarded. We all know that the men must be dead and the Iraqi resistance people must have tortured them terribly before they died. This will be a case of the Unopened Coffin if and when they find the parts. ”

Why are Honest 9/11 Researchers Targeted

by Chris Bollyn

Global Research, May 24, 2007

I am an independent journalist who has investigated the events of 9/11 since that terrible day in which our lives and national political reality were so drastically changed.

My original research and articles have resulted in several discoveries that are central to understanding what really happened at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the reclaimed mine in Lambertsville, Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately, because my discoveries do not support the official government conspiracy version, I was branded an "anti-government conspiracy theorist" by those who refuse to investigate any evidence that challenges the official version.

Last August 15, a gang of three undercover cops came to my house and assaulted me during an unjustified arrest. I was TASERed while restrained and my right elbow was broken in front of my wife and 8-year-old daughter. My writings made me a target of those who are dedicated to promoting the lies about 9/11.
Naturally, this brutal assault took a heavy toll on me. I was thrown into a cell with no water and told to "drink from the toilet." When I asked why undercover cops with body armor had been prowling around my house, I was told – "We are watching you."

I was subsequently charged with two trumped-up misdemeanor charges and immediately became the subject of a well-orchestrated international campaign to discredit me – and by extension my writings and research.
I now face a jury trial on May 31st in the Cook County Circuit Court and would appreciate if you would contact the mayor and police chief of Hoffman Estates and express your concern for what happened to me. In today's America, what happened to me could happen to anyone. For that reason it needs to be addressed by concerned citizens.

The contact information is available here:

Three weeks after I was assaulted and arrested, 9/11 researcher Professor Steven E. Jones of Brigham Young University, was slandered on the local NPR affiliate as a "anti-Semite" and removed from his teaching position at that prestigious Mormon school.

Jones and I had collaborated in the spring of 2006 on his research into the molten metal seen at the World Trade Center. I had learned and reported about the molten iron found in the basements of the three collapsed towers in the summer of 2002. These reports had piqued the interest of Jones several years later. His scientific interest resulted in a thesis that Thermite-type cutter charges had been used to facilitate the destruction of the twin towers and the 47-story WTC 7.

I took Jones' research to the University of California at Davis where I met with Professor Thomas Cahill. Cahill had collected data and analyzed the smoke (with a Davis DRUM) that rose from the WTC debris pile from early October until Christmas 2001. The extraordinary abundance of nano-size particles in the smoke indicated that the molten metal beneath the towers was hotter than the boiling point of iron and the other metals found in the bluish smoke. This is the kind of evidence that those who support the official version hate.

Were the attacks on me and Professor Jones related? Were we attacked, slandered, and discredited because we were asking too many questions about 9/11? In her recent article, "War and the Police State: Complicity of the American People," published by Global Research Donna J. Thorne wrote,

"Fearing exposure, the Czars of Propaganda know that 'Truthers' must be branded and discredited if government corruption and corporate fraud is to flourish unabated."

"Fear attempts to silence dissenters," Thorne wrote. "As the Truth Movement gains momentum and amasses credibility, the fear profiteers have begun heralding yet another 'threat' to National Security - inquiring minds. This is both good news and bad news. We are no longer ignorable. Fearing exposure, the Czars of Propaganda know that 'Truthers' must be branded and discredited if government corruption and corporate fraud is to flourish unabated. This said, prepare for an intensified Smear-and-Fear Campaign. Any group or individual who vocally questions the official story of 9/11 or who exercises the right to demand Government accountability will be labeled 'Anti-American and Anti-Patriotic.'"

Will we allow that? Will we stand up for the Truth - or will we quietly submit to the lies?

9/11: an 'inside job?' Controlled demolition, claims California architect (May 28, 2007)
Conspiracy buffs are in for a big treat. California architect Richard Gage will be in Winnipeg this week to offer his explanation of why the World Trade Centre towers collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001. Gage has become a leading figure of the so-called 9/11 truth movement, an informal campaign from people all over the world who challenge official accounts of what happened that day.He argues that a deliberate, controlled demolition using explosive devices is what really destroyed the twin towers that day, along with another skyscraper known as WTC 7 or Building 7. Speaking to Sun Media from his Bay Area home this weekend, Gage said few people are even aware of the third building.'SMOKING GUN' "It's the smoking gun of 9/11," he said. "It was a 47-storey building, not hit by an airplane, that came down into its own footprint in 6.5 seconds, at nearly freefall speed -- symmetrically, smooth, straight down." Gage says Building 7 fell after sustaining relatively minor damage due to the collapse of one of the twin towers hours earlier, with small fires on its fifth and 12th floors. Explosions were heard around its base as it collapsed and a large amount of molten metal was found in the basement area, said Gage. He claims the only good explanation for the presence of the metal is that it came from certain kinds of incendiary charges. "Two small fires -- even large, hot-burning, long-lasting fires -- have never brought down a steel frame highrise building, ever," said Gage. By all official accounts, the 9/11 attacks were the work of the al-Qaida terrorist network but Gage is trying to spur the U.S. Congress to launch a new investigation into who was responsible. "We don't know who did it and we don't know why," he said. "That's why we need an investigation." CLIP

(...) In other interviews with Argentine media, Sonnenfeld is quoted as saying, "What I saw (at 9/11) leads me to the terrible conclusion that there was foreknowledge of what was going to happen - the precautions that were taken to save certain things that the authorities there considered irreplaceable or invaluable. "For example, certain things were missing that could only have been removed with a truck. Yet after the first plane hit one of the towers, everything in Manhattan collapsed and no one could have gotten near the towers to do that."Sonnenfeld is quoted as saying documentation was removed from U.S. intelligence agencies in the World Trade Center, including the CIA, prior to the attacks. He did not specify how he could have known that.Sonnenfeld's allegations have made him a poster child for conspiracy theorists on the Internet, and a number of Web sites use him to bolster their contentions of government involvement in or knowledge about the attacks.(...) SASKATOON, Sask.-Today, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its first projections of world grain supply and demand for the coming crop year: 2007/08. USDA predicts supplies will plunge to a 53-day equivalent-their lowest level in the 47-year period for which data exists.

"The USDA projects global grain supplies will drop to their lowest levels on record. Further, it is likely that, outside of wartime, global grain supplies have not been this low in a century, perhaps longer," said NFU Director of Research Darrin Qualman.

Most important, 2007/08 will mark the seventh year out of the past eight in which global grain production has fallen short of demand. This consistent shortfall has cut supplies in half-down from a
115-day supply in 1999/00 to the current level of 53 days. "The world is consistently failing to produce as much grain as it uses," said Qualman. He continued: "The current low supply levels are not the result of a transient weather event or an isolated production problem: low supplies are the result of a persistent drawdown trend."

In addition to falling grain supplies, global fisheries are faltering. Reports in respected journals Science and Nature state that 1/3 of ocean fisheries are in collapse, 2/3 will be in collapse by 2025, and our ocean fisheries may be virtually gone by 2048. "Aquatic food systems are collapsing, and terrestrial food systems are under tremendous stress," said Qualman.

Demand for food is rising rapidly. There is a worldwide push to proliferate a North American-style meat-based diet based on intensive livestock production-turning feedgrains into meat in this way means exchanging 3 to 7 kilos of grain protein for one kilo of meat protein. Population is rising-2.5 billion people will join the global population in the coming decades.

"Every six years, we're adding to the world the equivalent of a North American population. We're trying to feed those extra people, feed a growing livestock herd, and now, feed our cars, all from a static farmland base. No one should be surprised that food production can't keep up," said Qualman.

Qualman said that the converging problems of natural gas and fertilizer constraints, intensifying water shortages, climate change, farmland loss and degradation, population increases, the proliferation of livestock feeding, and an increasing push to divert food supplies into biofuels means that we are in the opening phase of an intensifying food shortage.

Qualman cautioned, however, that there are no easy fixes. "If we try to do more of the same, if we try to produce, consume, and export more food while using more fertilizer, water, and chemicals, we will only intensify our problems. Instead, we need to rethink our relation to food, farmers, production, processing, and distribution. We need to create a system focused on feeding people and creating health. We need to strengthen the food production systems around the world. Diversity, resilience, and sustainability are key," concluded Qualman.

The United States Department of Agriculture reports recent grain supply and demand numbers on its World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) website at

The longer-term data on world grains supply and demand is at Production, Supply, and Demand Online (PSD) at

The NFU created the graph below using USDA data from the above-noted sites. The graph takes stocks/use ratios ("ending stocks" divided by "total use") and multiplies these percentages by
365 to get a more intuitive "days of supply" number.

Note that the graph projects supplies for the upcoming year to hit their lowest record levels-lower even than the 1973 levels that spurred a rapid price increase. Note also the unprecedented and steep downward trendline for the past 8 years.

Biofuel: good idea, bad practice

Now that the reality of climate change has been accepted even by its strongest sceptics, there is a rush to find answers. The latest buzz is to substitute the use of greenhouse gas-emitting fossil fuels with biofuels—fuel processed from plants. Unfortunately, the way we are going about implementing this “good” idea could mean we are headed from the frying pan to the fire.

There are two kinds of biofuel: ethanol, processed from sugarcane or corn, and biodiesel, made from biomass. Climate-savvy Europe gave the first push to biofuel, mandating they should contribute 6 per cent of fuels used in vehicles by 2010 and 10 per cent by 2020. The bulk of biodiesel comes from domestically grown rapeseed. But to meet its growing needs, it is looking at importing soyabean-based fuel from Brazil and Argentina, and palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia.

US president George Bush has this year called on his country to produce 132 billion litres of biofuel by 2017, to cut dependence on foreign fuel. The US’s favourite biofuel is ethanol, which it produces from corn starch. Brazil, the world’s largest ethanol producer, mostly uses sugarcane. It is estimated that ethanol plants will burn up to half of the US’s domestic corn supplies in the coming few years. In addition, its biofuel industry is looking to make fuel out of soya and other crops to feed the automobile industry’s growing hunger.

Already, the repercussions of this switch are beginning to show. Late last year, Mexico saw its tortilla wars, as people found the price of their staple—corn—had doubled. The hike was a result of the crop’s new market as a source of vehicle fuel and the control over the crop and its uses by corporate USA. In this case, one company, Archer Daniels Midlands, has dominant interests in the corn and wheat market and is the largest ethanol processor in the region. In addition, it has a financial stake in a Mexican company that makes tortillas and refines wheat. In other words, the company benefits when corn price increases and consumers switch to wheat. Or when the switch takes place from food to fuel, they benefit. Similarly, Cargill, the agribusiness multinational, is now the big name in the biofuel market. In this scenario, prices of other food commodities—wheat, soya, palm oil—are rising as well, in turn, impacting the poorest consumers globally. The projections are that food prices will increase between 20-40 per cent in the next 10 years or so because of this switchover.

The problem is compounded by the fact that this “switch” will do little to avert climate change. It is clear that all the biofuel in the world will be a blip on the total consumption of fossil fuel. In the US, for instance, it is agreed that if the entire corn crop is used for ethanol, it can only replace 12 per cent of current gasoline—petrol—used in the country. A recent paper in the US journal Foreign Affairs estimates that filling a 95-litre fuel tank with pure ethanol will require about 200 kg of corn, which has enough calories to feed a person for a year.

If we factor in the fuel inputs that go into converting biomass to energy—from diesel to run tractors, natural gas to make fertilisers, fuel to run refineries—biofuel is not an energy-efficient option. It is estimated that roughly 20 per cent of corn-made ethanol is ‘new’ energy. This does not account for the water it will take to grow this new crop. There is also evidence that rainforests will be cut to expand the cultivation of soya, sugarcane and palm oil, which in turn will exacerbate climate change.

Don’t get me wrong: I am in favour of biofuel. But the question we need to ask is how to use it to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, though we are only interested in maximising corporate profits, we believe rather naively that social objectives are being met.

Firstly, let us be clear that biofuels cannot substitute fossil fuels; but they can make a difference if we begin to limit the consumption of the latter. If this is the case, governments should not provide subsidies to grow crops for biofuel, as is being done in the US and Europe, but spend to limit their fuel consumption by reducing the sheer numbers of vehicles on their roads. If this is done, biofuels, which are renewable and emit less greenhouse gases, will make a difference. Otherwise, we are only fooling ourselves.

Secondly, the question is where will the biofuels be used? Let us be clear that the opportunity for a massive biofuel revolution is not in the rich world’s cities, to run vehicles—but in the grid-unconnected world of Indian or African villages. It is here that there is a scarcity of energy—electricity to power homes, fuel to cook, to run generator sets to pump water and to run vehicles. It is also here that the use of fossil fuels will grow because there is no alternative.

Instead of bringing fossil fuel long distances to feed this market, this part of the world can leapfrog to a new energy future—from no fuel to the most advanced fuel. The biofuel can come from non-edible tree crops—jatropha in India, for example—grown on wasteland, which will also employ people.

This fuel market will demand a different business model. It cannot be conducted on the basis of the so-called free market model, which is based on economies of scale and, therefore, demands consolidation and leads to uncompetitive practices. In today’s model, a company will grow the crops, extract the oil, transport it first to refineries and then back to consumers.

The new generation biofuel business needs a model of distributed growth in which we have millions of growers and millions of distributors and millions of users. Remember, climate change is not a technological fix but a political challenge. Biofuel is part of a new future.

Summary: Thanks to high oil prices and hefty subsidies, corn-based ethanol is now all the rage in the United States. To stop this trend, and prevent even more people from going hungry, Washington must conserve more and diversify ethanol's production inputs.

Why We Should Share the Wealth

Rockefeller did it. The Gateses are doing it. If every billionaire chipped in, it would transform the world

What is the power of one when that one happens to be a John D. Rockefeller or a Bill Gates? If history is a guide, the answer is, quite a lot. I'm speaking not only about the power to reshape an industry like oil or personal computers but also about the ability to improve the world through philanthropy. Rockefeller proved that giving away money is much more than charity. It can be transformative. And if today's billionaires were to pool their resources, they could outflank the world's governments in ending poverty and pandemic disease.

A century ago, Rockefeller decided to put his vast fortune to public use, offering to endow a federal institution to fight disease, poverty and ignorance. Hotheads attacked him, claiming that he was just trying to buy a good name, and Congress demurred. So, instead, in 1913, Rockefeller set up the Rockefeller Foundation with two initial gifts totaling $100 million. No institution did more in the 20th century to further the cause of international development. It led the way in the eradication of hookworm in the U.S. South, helping pave the way for the region's economic development. It supported the Nobel-prizewinning work that created the yellow-fever vaccine. It helped Brazil eliminate a malaria-transmitting strain of mosquito. And perhaps most stunningly, it funded the Asian Green Revolution, the transformative agricultural success that enabled India and other countries to escape endless cycles of famine and poverty.

Now Bill and Melinda Gates, backed by more than $30 billion of their own funds and an additional $31 billion of Warren Buffett's, can do the same. Like the Rockefeller Foundation, the Gates Foundation rightly looks to technology for the breakthroughs that can end extreme poverty on a global basis. Its original focus has been on health technologies, but now the foundation is expanding to agriculture, water and other areas that are also critical in the fight against poverty.

Of course, Bill and Melinda Gates are not alone in contemporary transformative philanthropy. George Soros' support for brave truth tellers in Central Europe and the former Soviet Union helped catalyze the peaceful end of communism. The Google guys, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are out to prove how information technologies can bring about major change. They have recently posted satellite imagery of Darfur, Sudan, in order to raise awareness and technical support for solutions in that violence-ravaged region. The dynamism of social entrepreneurship makes a mockery, alas, of our political leadership. The Gateses, Buffett, Soros, Page and Brin have left George W. Bush and the rest of Washington in the dust. U.S. international aid is at a pitiful 0.17% of national income (just 17¢ per $100), with much of that squandered as failed "reconstruction aid" in Iraq.

According to Forbes magazine, there are some 950 billionaires in the world, with an estimated combined wealth of $3.5 trillion. Even after all the yachts, mansions and luxury living that money can buy have been funded many times over, these billionaires will still have nearly $3.5 trillion to change the world. Suppose they pooled their wealth, as Buffett has done with Bill and Melinda Gates. By standard principles of foundation management, a $3.5 trillion endowment would have a 5% payout of about $175 billion a year, an amount sufficient to extend basic health care to all in the poorest world; end massive pandemics of AIDS, TB and malaria; jump-start an African Green Revolution; end the digital divide; and address the crying need for safe drinking water for 1 billion people. In short, this billionaires' foundation would be enough to end extreme poverty itself. All in all, it's not a bad gig for men and women who have transcended the daily economic struggle faced by the rest of humanity. They might also take note of the admonition of America's first megaphilanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, who wrote in 1889 that "the day is not far distant when the man who dies leaving behind him millions of available wealth, which was free for him to administer during life, will pass away unwept, unhonored, and unsung." Fortunately, plenty of new heroes seem ready for a different legacy. WHO HAS THE MONEY

The top five on the Forbes list of the world's wealthiest people come from all over the globe.

Three Bush quickies

Q: How many Bush Administration officials does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: None. There is nothing wrong with the light bulb; its conditions are improving every day. Any reports of its lack of incandescence are a delusional spin from the liberal media. That light bulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the lighting effect. Why do you hate freedom?

President George W. Bush was scheduled to visit the Episcopal Church outside Washington as part of his campaign to restore his poll standings.

Bush's campaign manager made a visit to the Bishop, and said to him, "We've been getting a lot of bad publicity because of the president's position on stem cell research, the Iraq war, Katrina, and the like. We'd gladly make a contribution to the church of $100,000 if during your sermon you'd say the President is a saint."

The Bishop thought it over for a few moments and finally said, "The Church is in desperate need of funds and I will agree to do it."

Bush showed up for the sermon and the Bishop began:

"I'd like to speak to you all this morning about our President. George Bush is a liar, a cheat, and a low-intelligence weasel.

He took the tragedy of September 11 and used it to frighten and manipulate the American people. He lied about weapons of mass destruction and invaded Iraq for oil and money, causing the deaths of tens of thousands and making the United States the most hated country on Earth.

"He appointed cronies to positions of power and influence, leading to widespread death and destruction during Hurricane Katrina. He awarded contracts and tax cuts to his rich friends so that we now have more poverty in this country, and a greater gap between rich and poor, than we've had since the Depression. He instituted illegal wiretaps when getting a warrant from a secret court would have been a mere administrative detail, had his henchmen lie to Congress about it, then claimed he is above the law.

"He has headed the most corrupt, bribe-inducing political party since Teapot Dome. The national surplus has turned into a staggering national debt of 7.6 trillion dollars, gas prices are up 85%, and vital research into global warming and stem cells is stopped cold because he's afraid to lose votes from some religious kooks.

"He is the worst example of a true Christian I've ever known.

But compared to Dick Cheney and Karl Rove, George Bush is a saint."
