"Fox News is nothing but state-run media, owned by the Bush/Cheney administration. It mimics the so-called "news" stations of dictatorships. In a dictatorship, however, citizens know not ever to believe state-run media and they know how to read between the lines of the drivel that state-run media pumps over the airwaves and ironically, those citizens are better informed than the American people. I don't believe ANYTHING any major news outlet says with regard to foreign or domestic policy. I hold the media responsible for the lies this administration perpetrated and disseminated. But I hold my fellow citizens responsible, as well, for believing the twaddle that Fox news and the rest of mainstream media peddles in a feeble attempt to justify unconscionable actions and encourage further outrageous assaults in the name of the American people. This is the most disgraceful era of media coverage in modern American history and for the first time, it is no better than some third-rate eastern European state-run BS emanating from a strong-man dictator. I never thought I'd see this day in this great nation. Disgusting. So show some spine and stop kowtowing to the pandering sycophants at Fox. The Emperor has no clothes. So freakin' show it already."

"WAR is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."

— Major General Smedley Butler -- Taken from

"A recent Presidential Directive has given the Bush administration full power to transfer control of this nation from the Congress and place it into the hands of the White House. Another such directive gives this President the right to declare martial law when and if he deems it necessary. Every day the drums of war beat more loudly for an attack against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran. Do the math. Then try to assess just how close we all are to the boundary that separates us from the Bush Black Hole. We already have lost so much that is totally irretrievable. If we endure as a free nation and as a free people we might recreate what we have lost one day in the future. But right now we are in a fight for survival.Understand that it is possible to enter a black hole with no sensation of the destructive force about to be encountered. Passing the boundary can be relatively uneventful and temporarily comfortable. But once over the line there is no way to retreat, and the fate of all who pass the boundary is forever sealed. Understand that it is possible to enter a black hole with no sensation of the destructive force about to be encountered. Passing the boundary can be relatively uneventful and temporarily comfortable. But once over the line there is no way to retreat, and the fate of all who pass the boundary is forever sealed...The choice, then, is clear. We can work to make others aware of the dangers they still do not see. We can direct others to the truth of what has happened and shake them out of their passivity and blindness. Or, as happens to so many bodies in space that unwittingly find themselves heading directly towards the boundaries from which they will never escape, we can just do nothing but sit back and enjoy the ride."

— Reggie -- Taken from George W. Bush and Black Holes!

In 1975, Dannion Brinkley was speaking on the telephone during a thunderstorm. A lightning bolt hit the phone line, sending thousands of volts of electricity through his head and body. His heart stopped and at the hospital, he was pronounced dead, and a death certificate was issued. He was then covered with a sheet and wheeled towards the morgue….then he woke up! He had been dead for 28 minutes, and this was the longest clinically documented near-death experience ever recorded at that time. He later told how he had gone down a tunnel into a bright light, went through a life-recall self-judgement process and was shown a series of future world events, up to 2014. Brinkley said that “between 2004 and 2014, more precisely between 2011 and 2012”, there would be “the return of an energy system that existed here a long time ago”, and that it would culminate in an “electromagnetic polar Earth shift” between 2012 and 2014. The whole process would present mankind with a spiritual opportunity to raise their consciousness. What Brinkley didn’t know, was that 2012 is the next “Creation Date” of the ancient Maya civilization. (...) So the “spiritual opportunity for mankind” spoken of by Danion Brinkley can be confirmed as a time very close to 2012, when something will trigger a mass Kundalini experience in mankind… but what could the trigger be? Alexey Dmitriev, a Russian geologist, has analysed the increasing changes in Earth’s weather and seismic phenomena, plus recent changes to the geomagnetic field. He has also taken into account solar changes, and changes to the weather and magnetic fields of all the other planets in the solar system. A ten-fold increase to the layer of deflected interstellar plasma on the heliosphere boundary indicates that the solar system is headed into an area of magnetised plasma that Dmitriev says is causing these changes. An increasing incidence of plasma balls in the atmosphere is a sign of the imminent “transformation of Earth” says Dmitriev, involving an interaction with processes beyond the three-dimensional world. Like Brinkley, other near-death-experience subjects have also foreseen Earth changes and consciousness changes associated with 2012, as have many who have undergone out-of-body experiences, lucid dreams, remote viewing, meditative trance states, and even alien abduction experiences. These are all mystical states in which the pineal gland in the centre of the human brain secretes dimethyltryptamine (DMT) into the blood, according to Rick Strassman’s recent study, and the Maya shamans used a mushroom containing psilocybin, which is a close relative of DMT, apparently accessing some sort of global mega-mind - the developing consciousness of the Earth mother."

Dennis Kucinich: Desaparecido! (08/13/2007)
Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich has been "disappeared." Not in the sense of victims of America's so-called War on Terror. He hasn't been carted off in an orange jumpsuit to some black site in Kazakhstan. But he has been "disappeared" by the reporters and editors of The New York Times. In an article by Jeff Zeleny and Mark Santora on Sunday headlined "Democrats Say Leaving Iraq May Take Years," the Times reports that Democratic candidates, with only candidate Bill Richardson "standing apart," are saying that troops will have to stay in Iraq and the area around Iraq for a long time. But wait. Kucinich, who in many polls does as well as or better than Biden and Richardson (in a new straw poll of Democratic activists in California, he ranked right behind Edwards and Obama, and ahead of Clinton and the rest of the crowd), not only wants the U.S. out of Iraq; but also he has submitted an actual bill in Congress (HR 1234) calling for a removal of all U.S. troops within three months' time, and barring the expenditure of any funds on future military activity in the region, except for the purpose of orderly withdrawal. So why was Kucinich left out of the Times article on Democratic candidates' positions on the Iraq War? The answer seems clear. The Times has decided that Kucinich isn't a candidate. He doesn't exist. He has been disappeared. The same is true on the issue of impeachment. CLIP

Iraqi Death Estimate
The number is shocking and sobering. It is at least 10 times greater than most estimates cited in the US media, yet it is based on the only scientifically valid study of violent Iraqi deaths caused by the U.S.-led invasion of March 2003. That study, published in prestigious medical journal The Lancet, estimated that over 600,000 Iraqis had been killed as a result of the invasion as of July 2006. Iraqis have continued to be killed since then. The graphic above provides a rough daily update of this number based on a rate of increase derived from the Iraq Body Count. (See the complete explanation.) This devastating human toll demands greater recognition. It eclipses the Rwandan genocide and our leaders are directly responsible. Little wonder they do not publicly cite it. CLIP

Truth of 9-11
The sixth anniversary of the 9/11 events will be commemorated in New York City by a historic gathering of researchers, authors, film-makers and activists to proclaim: The Truth of 9-11 is ready for mainstream
Now hundreds of academics, architects, scientists, engineers, retired military and intelligence professionals have come forward to challenge the official account of 9/11 which has never been satisfactorily proven or authentically investigated. Polls show that as high as 84% of Americans think the government has lied, has covered up information, or was in some way involved. Although the mainstream media has failed to ask the hard questions, there is an overwhelming accumulation of evidence that points to 9/11 being what the “Project For A New American Century” referred to as a “new Pearl Harbor” to carry out their agenda for “full spectrum dominance”. Come hear experts present the facts that break through the official myths and bring you new awareness. Learn how our impression of reality has been “engineered,” with a media that works overtime to reinforce the “Big Lie”. CLIP

The New “9/11 Hijackers”?
After 5 years, many many aspects of domestic and foreign policy in both the USA and UK are based on a false premise – that the 9/11 attacks were committed by Islamic fundamentalist hijackers in a plot to "attack the freedom" enjoyed by people living in Western Democratic Societies. 9/11 Truth Campaigners, like me, now know that this story is false and that we must, as quickly as possible, make as many people as possible aware of the depth of this falsehood, and its implications. We know that WTC Towers 1, 2 and 7 were not destroyed by jet fuel and jet impacts. More and more people are beginning to realise the official story is a gigantic lie. We are now battling to get the truth out to people who need to understand that they are being spoon-fed a diet of fear and misinformation. Mainstream media will not treat the issue seriously, and the language they use to describe our efforts to expose the truth is usually tainted with ridicule and/or disbelief, though recently, in the USA, things have begun to take a slightly different direction. For those of us engaged in this battle, it is sometimes easy to think that we now know enough about the realities of what happened on 9/11 to campaign and we should focus on that and keep our momentum going. However, perhaps we should remember, too, that the 9/11 perpetrators ("perps") are still at work – they didn't just "disappear" or "go underground" when the 9/11 Truth Campaign began to get some traction (more so in the USA than the UK). We should realise that the perps' tactics are to infiltrate, decoy, distract, trash and ridicule and those tactics will be applied to 9/11 Truth Campaign groups in exactly the same way as they are applied to other protest groups such as Amnesty International and Stop The War. (These groups, for example have not, to my knowledge, yet made any public statements about the proof that 9/11 was an Inside Job.) CLIP

People-Centred Global Governance - Making it Happen!
As global problems such as global warming, global poverty, pollution, terrorism and runaway corporate power increasingly outstrip the capacity of national and international governance institutions to solve them, the issue of global governance is rapidly moving up the international political agenda. In this book, Bunzl draws on the work of a number of leading evolutionary thinkers to show that both the process of globalisation itself, and the evolution of a binding system of global governance, are natural parts of human evolution. The central dilemma of achieving a healthy form of global governance, Bunzl shows, is that its implementation must be by popular consent, and yet it must also be consented to and implemented by nation-states. For only nation-states have the authority and capacity to do so. But present inter-governmental efforts to solve global warming and other global problems are proving wholly inadequate and are showing the nation-state system to be incapable of such a move. The solution, Bunzl argues, is to devise a way for global citizens to use their votes in their respective national elections to drive their politicians and governments to implement global governance and to do so in a way that does not require nations to act against their own self-interest. Furthermore, he presents the Simultaneous Policy as one means by which this can be achieved, arguing it to be the world's first genuine form of global electoral politics. Why Cheney Really Is That Bad - By Scott Ritter
The vice president is the single greatest threat to American and international security in the world today. Not Osama Bin Laden. Not the ghost of Saddam Hussein. Not Ahmadinejad or Kim Jung Il. Not al-Qaida, the Taliban, or Jose Padilla himself. Not even George W. Bush can lay claim to this title. It is Dick Cheney's alone. Operating in a never-never land of constitutional ambiguity which exists between the office of the president and the Congress of the United States, Cheney's office has made its impact felt on the policies of the United States of America as had no vice president's office before him. Granted unprecedented oversight over national security and foreign policy by executive order in early 2001, many months prior to the terror attacks of 9/11, Cheney has single-handedly steered America away from being a nation among nations (albeit superior), operating (roughly) in accordance with the rule of law, and toward its present manifestation as the new Rome, a decadent imperial power bent on global domination whatever the cost. The absolute worst of the rot that has infected America because of the policies and actions of the Bush administration has originated from the office of the vice president. The nonsensical response to the terror attacks of 9/11, seeking a "global war" versus defending the rule of law at home and abroad, taking the lead in spreading the lies that got us involved in Iraq, legitimizing torture as a tool of American jurisprudence, advocating for warrantless wiretappings of U.S.-based communications (regardless of what the Fourth Amendment says against illegal search and seizure), and pushing for an expansion of America's global conflict into Iran-all can be traced back to the person of Cheney as the point of origin. The Path Towards War With Iran
What is the true reason for existing U.S. policies towards Iran? There may be a number of motivating influences, but we may again learn from the lesson of Iraq to make an educated guess about the answer. In that case, it was clear that Saddam Hussein had for too long successfully defied the U.S. and thus threatened U.S. credibility as the global superpower. An example had to be made of Iraq, and the consequences for the Iraqi people were simply not a consideration.

Former CIA officer says U.S ready to strike Iran within 6 months (22/ 08/ 2007)
WASHINGTON, August 22 (RIA Novosti) - The United States could deliver a military strike against Iran within the next six months, a former CIA officer told Fox News. In an interview Tuesday the U.S. TV channel asked Robert Baer, a former CIA field officer assigned to the Middle East, whether the U.S. was preparing for military action against Iran, citing Baer's column for Time Magazine on August 18, where he suggested that Washington officials expect an attack within the next six months. "I've taken an informal poll inside the government," Baer told Fox. "The feeling is we will hit the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps [IRGC]."He said the George W. Bush administration is convinced "that the Iranians are interfering in Iraq and the rest of the Gulf," but what his sources anticipate is "not exactly a war." "We won't see American troops cross the border," said Baer. "If this is going to happen, it is going to happen very quickly and it is going to surprise a lot of people." There were recent reports that Washington would put Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard - the largest branch of Iran's military, separate from the rest of the army - on the terrorism list. Baer said the U.S. military suspects that the Revolutionary Guard is the main supplier of sophisticated improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to insurgents killing coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also said there is a belief among neo-conservative elements in the Bush administration that the Revolutionary Guard is an obstacle to democratic and a friendly Iran."IRGC IED's are a casus belli for this administration. There will be an attack on Iran," Baer quoted an anonymous White House source as saying. CLIP

Prelude to an Attack on Iran by Robert Baer,8599,1654188,00.html
Reports that the Bush Administration will put Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the terrorism list can be read in one of two ways: it's either more bluster or, ominously, a wind-up for a strike on Iran. Officials I talk to in Washington vote for a hit on the IRGC, maybe within the next six months. And they think that as long as we have bombers and missiles in the air, we will hit Iran's nuclear facilities. An awe and shock campaign, lite, if you will. But frankly they're guessing; after Iraq the White House trusts no one, especially the bureaucracy. As with Saddam and his imagined WMD, the Administration's case against the IRGC is circumstantial. The U.S. military suspects but cannot prove that the IRGC is the main supplier of sophisticated improvised explosive devices to insurgents killing our forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The most sophisticated version, explosive formed projectiles or shape charges, are capable of penetrating the armor of an Abrams tank, disabling the tank and killing the crew. (...) Strengthening the Administration's case for a strike on Iran, there's a belief among neo-cons that the IRGC is the one obstacle to a democratic and friendly Iran. They believe that if we were to get rid of the IRGC, the clerics would fall, and our thirty-years war with Iran over. It's another neo-con delusion, but still it informs White House thinking. And what do we do if just the opposite happens — a strike on Iran unifies Iranians behind the regime? An Administration official told me it's not even a consideration. "IRGC IED's are a casus belli for this Administration. There will be an attack on Iran."

Bush League War Drums Beating Louder on Iran (24 August 2007)
(...) One former colleague, operations officer-par-excellence Robert Baer, now reports (in this week's Time magazine) that, according to his sources, the Bush/Cheney administration is winding up for a strike on Iran; that the administration's plan to put Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the terrorism list points in the direction of such a strike; and that the delusional "neo-conservative" thinking that still guides White House policy concludes that such an attack would lead to the fall of the clerics and the rise of a more friendly Iran. Hold on; it gets even worse: Baer's sources tell him that administration officials are thinking "as long as we have bombers and missiles in the air, we will hit Iran's nuclear facilities." Rove and Snow: Going Wobbly? Our VIPS colleague Phil Geraldi, writing in The American Conservative, earlier noted that in the past Karl Rove has served as a counterweight to Vice President Dick Cheney, and may have tried to put the brakes on Cheney's death wish to expand the Middle East quagmire to Iran. And former Pentagon officer, retired Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, who worked shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the most devoted neocons just before the attack on Iraq, has put into words (on speculation several of us have been indulging in with respect to Rove's departure. In short, it seems possible that Rove, who is no one's dummy and would not want to be required to "spin" an unnecessary war on Iran, may have lost the battle with Cheney over the merits of a military strike on Iran, and only then decided - or was urged - to spend more time with his family. As for administration spokesperson Tony Snow, it seems equally possible that, before deciding he had to leave the White House to make more money, he concluded that his stomach could not withstand the challenge of conjuring up yet another Snow job to explain why Bush/Cheney needed to attack Iran. There is recent precedent for this kind of thing. CLIP

More War on the Horizon - By Paul Craig Roberts
No pullout from Iraq while I’m president, declares George W. Bush. On to Iran, declares Vice President Cheney. Israel is a “peace-seeking state” that needs $30 billion of US taxpayers’ money for war, declares State Department official Nicholas Burns. The Democratic Congress, if not fully behind the Iraqi war, at least no longer is in the way of it. Nor are the Democrats in the way of the Bush regime’s build up for initiating war with Iran. The Bush regime says it is going to designate part of Iran’s military--the Revolutionary Guards--a terrorist organization, whose bases and facilities Bush intends to bomb along with Iran’s nuclear energy sites. Three US aircraft carrier strike forces are deployed off Iran. B-2 Stealth Bombers are being fitted to carry 30,000 pound “bunker-buster” bombs to use against hardened sites. Politicized US generals assert that Iran is providing arms and aid to the Iraqi resistance to the US occupation. The media is feeding the US population the same propaganda about nonexistent Iranian weapons of mass destruction that they fed us about nonexistent Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. (...) America's hegemonic hubris is a sickness. A country that tolerates a war criminal while he openly plans to attack yet another country is definitely not a light unto the world.

“An Attempt to Deceive Americans Into Yet Another War” (August 16, 2007)
Dennis Kucinich may not be a front runner in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. But the congressman from Cleveland has succeeded in distinguishing himself from the other contenders when it comes to speaking those truths that are self-evident.And in an era of mass delusion and denial on the party of leaders in both major political parties, stating the obvious can be a radical act.Such is the case with Kucinich appropriate answer to the latest move by the Bush-Cheney administration to ramp up hostilities with Iran. That move — the unprecedented attempt to label Iran’s 125,000-strong Republican Guard as a “specially designated global terrorist” group — is, as the congressman says “nothing more than an attempt to deceive Americans into yet another war — this time with Iran.” No one who has paid even the slightest attention to the Bush-Cheney administration’s approach to Middle East affairs can doubt that Kucinich is right. Yet, his is a lonely voice of clarity amid the din of Democratic obfuscation that aids and abets this White House’s worst instincts. “The belligerent Bush Administration is using this pending designation to convince the American public into accepting that a war with Iran is inevitable,” argues Kucinich. “This designation will set the stage for more chaos in the region because it undercuts all of our diplomatic efforts,” he adds. Explaining that, “This new label provides further evidence for Iran’s leaders that there is no point to engage in diplomatic talks with the United States if our actions point directly to regime change.” Delivering the response that should be coming from New York Senator Hillary Clinton, Illinois Senator Barack Obama and especially from Delaware Senator Joe Biden, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when he isn’t campaigning for president, Kucinich argued that, “Our nation is better served by demanding sensible and responsible diplomatic foreign policy initiatives from the Bush Administration.” Kucinich, who has proposed impeaching Vice President Cheney for continually prodding the country toward an unnecessary war with Iran, may not get the political credit he deserves for calling out this administration. But history will recognize him as the man who sounded the alarm when the Bush administration moved America closer to the brink of disaster.

U.S. Use of Radiological Weapons - Calls for an International Tribunal
White House spokespersons and national security advisers have repeatedly warned that Islamic terrorists could strike cities in the US with radiological weapons. Worse, our leaders have done it on a greater scale.

How the Democrats Blew It in Only 8 Months
The voters put the Democrats in to end the war, and it's escalating. The Democrats voted the money for the surge and the money for the next $459.6 billion military budget. Their latest achievement was to provide enough votes in support of Bush to legalize warrantless wiretapping for "foreign suspects whose communications pass through the United States." Enough Democrats joined Republicans to make this a 227-183 victory for Bush.

Fighting the Democrats' Complicity with Bush By Francis A. Boyle
The Democrats in Congress have taken no effective steps to stop, impede, or thwart the Bush Jr. administration's wars of aggression against Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, or anywhere else, including their long-standing threatened war against Iran. To the contrary, the new Democrat-controlled Congress decisively facilitated these serial Nuremberg crimes against peace on May 24, 2007 by enacting a $95 billion supplemental appropriation to fund war operations through September 30, 2007.

Iraqis blame U.S. depleted uranium for surge in cancer
Iraq's environment minister blamed Monday the use of depleted uranium weapons by U.S. forces during the 2003 Operation Shock and Awe for the current surge in cancer cases across Iraq. As a result of "at least 350 sites in Iraq being contaminated during bombing" with depleted uranium (DU) weapons, Nermin Othman said, the nation is facing about 140,000 cases of cancer, with 7,000 to 8,000 new ones registered each year. Speaking at a ministerial meeting of the Arab League, she also complained that many chemical plants and oil facilities had been destroyed during the two military campaigns since the 1990s, but the ecological consequences remain unclear. "Our ministry is fledgling, and we need international support; notably, we need laboratories to better monitor air and water contamination," she said. The first major UN research on the consequences of the use of DU on the battlefield was conducted in 2003 in the wake of NATO operations in Kosovo, Bosnia, and Montenegro. The UN Environment Program (UNEP) said in its report after the research that DU poses little threat if spent munitions are cleared from the ground. "Health risks primarily depend on the awareness of people coming into contact with DU," UNEP writes in its 2004 brochure "Depleted Uranium Awareness." No major clean-up or public awareness campaigns have been reported in Iraq.

Number Of Iraqis Slaughtered Since The U.S. Invaded Iraq 1,017,086
CLIP

U.S. Media Ignores Estimate of 1 Million Iraqi Deaths
Yesterday a radio interviewer in South Africa asked me what had been the response of the "mainstream media in the United States" to Just Foreign Policy's ongoing estimate of the Iraqi death toll from the U.S. invasion and occupation, which on Thursday crossed the one million mark.

Dick Cheney '94: Invading Baghdad Would Create Quagmire (This was shown last August 15 on the Daily Show with John Stewart)
In this interview from April 15th, 1994, Dick Cheney reveals the reasons why invading Baghdad and toppling Saddam Hussein wouldn't be a great idea. He also stipulates that "not very many" American soldiers' lives were worth losing to take out Saddam during the Gulf War.

America's biggest threat comes from within (August 19, 2007)
Paul Craig Roberts is a Republican who served as undersecretary of the treasury under Ronald Reagan and associate editor of the Wall Street Journal's editorial page, so he's no kook or Commie. He warns, "Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the United States could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran."Roberts warns us that Bush has put into place all the necessary measures for dictatorship in the form of executive orders that are triggered whenever Bush declares a national emergency. Ask yourself: Would a government that has lied us into Iraq and is working to lie us into an attack on Iran shrink from staging terrorist attacks in order to remove opposition to its agenda? Bush already ignores public opinion and laws he doesn't like. His secret spying network is in place. He has politicized all levels of government, appointing cronies who are loyal to him rather than competent officials. Has he been setting the groundwork for dictatorship? Adolf Hitler, who never achieved majority support in a German election, used the Reichstag fire to fan hysteria and push through the Enabling Act, which made him dictator. Determined tyrants never require majority support in order to overthrow democratic constitutions. They declare "national emergencies." A series of staged or permitted terrorist attacks would accomplish that.On a recent radio show, Roberts said, "Americans think their danger is terrorists. They don't understand the terrorists cannot take away habeas corpus, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution.... The terrorists are not anything like the threat we face from our own government in the name of fighting terrorism." Is Roberts - Republican, Reagan appointee, conservative newspaper editor - far out when he warns, "The American constitutional system is near to being overthrown"? One certainly hopes so.

Iraqi prisoners kept in wire cages (August 19, 2007),23599,22270164-38201,00.html
IRAQ'S Sunni Arab vice president promised better treatment for detainees today and released pictures from inside a Baghdad prison camp that showed hundreds of inmates packed into tented wire-mesh cages. The rare video pictures from inside an Iraqi prison were released by the office of Sunni Arab vice president Tareq al-Hashemi, who visited the Rusafa prison compound in eastern Baghdad with his Shiite counterpart. The footage showed row upon row of outdoor tents made of wire mesh and covered with white plastic sheeting, each about the size of a basketball court and housing dozens of inmates. Prisoners, some stripped to their waists, pressed up against the mesh walls and shouted their innocence. Some chanted Saddam-era Iraqi nationalist slogans. “I have been jailed for two years and have never been put before a judge or court!” shouted one prisoner.“We are not asking for food or water. Just free us. We have committed no crimes!” said another.Mr Hashemi told the prisoners that the authorities were working to speed up their cases. “We will not accept this injustice. It is a shame on all of us. Be patient,” he said. “All of your cases will be heard.” At one point he added: “You are lucky to be here. At least you have security. "Those outside do not even have security.” US forces and Iraq's own security forces have imprisoned tens of thousands of detainees without charge in the four years since the fall of President Saddam Hussein. Bush to CIA: 'Leave No Marks' (August 21st, 2007),hentoff,77589,2.html
On July 20, George W. Bush issued an executive order authorizing the CIA to use "enhanced" techniques (as the president likes to call them) in its terror interrogation program—including in the CIA's secret prisons, known internationally as "black sites." (...) In other words, so long as no marks are left on a CIA prisoner, interrogators are left to their time-tested cruelties. However, Elaine Massimino, the Washington director of Human Rights First, makes a very pertinent point: "Administration lawyers may try to convince [CIA] interrogators that the secret interrogation techniques authorized by the president are lawful because they cause no 'permanent damage.' But interrogators shouldn't buy it." She goes on to list certain long-practiced (and subsequently leaked) interrogation techniques that, despite all evidence to the contrary, the CIA and the president have continually insisted are not torture, or that could not be considered cruel and inhuman. There is every reason to believe that the new presidential executive order includes their use. Accordingly, Massimino emphasizes: "Stress positions, prolonged isolation, sensory bombardment, mock-drowning, and other such abuses can cause serious physical and mental pain. They need not inflict permanent damage in order to violate the law and potentially result in very serious criminal sanctions." Sanctions, that is, that could be directed at administration officials all the way up the chain of command. CLIP

Suicide Bombings - A Favourite US Counter-Insurgency Tactic (20 Aug 2007) (MUST READ!)
Since 9-11 reports of "suicide bombings" have increased exponentially in the news. We are led to believe by the experts that it is one of the favorite weapons of the insurgency against the occupation forces, since it is a cheap and simple way to create chaos. Hardly a day goes by without at least one bombing in Iraq or Afghanistan being immediately seized upon by the media as the work of Iraqi insurgents. It is one thing for an insurgency to commit suicide bombings against the occupation forces, it is another thing entirely to use them to target and kill civilians. We have been brainwashed into believing that the insurgents in Iraq are such brutal, uncivilized, fanatical crazy extremists that they will anything to fight 'freedom' - even kill their own people. (...) Does no one find all of this even mildly odd? After 9-11, suddenly this bizarre phenomenon of an insurgency using suicide bombings against their own people rather than the invaders appears, as if to provide supporting evidence for the reality of the crazed "suicide bombing" hijackers that attacked America - or so the official story goes. Could the answer be as simple as that what is being touted as suicide bombings are in fact the work of US/British/Israeli counterinsurgency teams? In Iraq, are we in fact dealing with the what are better know as "false flag operations"? This certainly would explain a lot of the confusion over why Iraqi groups would kill their own people in response to a US invasion of their country. After all, the people who are dying by the hundreds every day in Iraq are the people who support the insurgency, and the US, British and Israeli forces in Iraq are fighting that insurgency, so who benefits from the daily mass murder of the supporters of the insurgency? Past counterinsurgency tactics involved such things as ethnic cleansing ("draining the dam" as this tactic was known) and/or the destruction of crops like with agent orange in the case of Vietnam. But these methods had little success. In recent years it seems that devious and deviant minds in the employ of the military industrial complex came up with much more insidious modern tactics. CLIP

Iraq's Elite Fleeing in Droves
Amira El Ahl, Volkhard Windfuhr and Bernhard Zand report for Der Spiegel: "Iraq, a country still shaken by daily violence, is currently the scene of what is likely the biggest refugee disaster since the displacement of Palestinians in the Arab-Israeli War in 1948 ... They are not just the country's poor and desperate. Many are the elites of a nation that already lost many of its best and brightest during decades of tyranny and economic embargoes."

Iraq Progress Report: A Time to Assess and Reflect By Stephen Lendman
(...) The generalissimo has now been in Iraq six months, and despite claims of progress, conditions are worse than ever and heading south under his stewardship. Still, the commander's hope springs eternal and won't likely wane (at least publicly) lest he risk another 4-star aspirant stepping in to replace him. With upper lip stiffened and reciting his prepared lines, he tells a New York Times reporter "we're going to try (to) win (this war, but)'s likely to muddle along for quite a long time." The boy emperor "commander-in-chief" back home has his ideas, too. He plans to continue the "surge" well into next year, all the while claiming "our new strategy is delivering good results, and our commanders recently reported more good news." (...) We're now "losing two wars and creating a vast arc of profound strategic and political instability from the Mediterranean Sea to South Asia." In addition, we reignited the arms race in Europe, turned a friendly Russia into a foe, and are heading the country toward possible bankruptcy through reckless fiscal policy. In sum, "this administration has been at least as bad as any (in the nation's history and perhaps it's) "the worst" ever. By its record (with plenty of Capitol Hill help), it's fair to compare Washington to an asylum with members of both parties the inmates. An outside observer would have to conclude the inmates were in charge, and it shows by what's happening. It also brings to mind the Wile E. Coyote cartoon character as a way to explain it. Bush's political agenda has been disastrous, yet both parties continue supporting the same mistakes expecting a different outcome. CLIP

Iraq War Resisters to Get Boost from Veterans Group (Aug. 20, 2007)
SAINT LOUIS - Members of a leading Iraq war veterans' organization voted this weekend to launch a campaign encouraging U.S. troops to refuse to fight. The decision was made at the group's annual membership meeting, held this weekend in Saint Louis, Missouri alongside the annual convention of the Veterans for Peace organization."Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) decided to make support of war resisters a major part of what we do," said Garrett Rappenhagen, a former U.S. Army sniper who served in Iraq from February 2004 to February 2005."There's a misconception that they're cowards," Rappenhagen said. "Most war resisters have already gone on a tour in Iraq. They've seen the war firsthand and have come to the conclusion that it's morally wrong. This is something we all should support. So to break that timidness of how we view war resisters in America, IVAW decided to embrace them."To underscore that point, the veterans group elected Staff Sergeant Camilo Mejia chair of its board of directors. In the winter of 2003, Mejia was the first soldier to refuse to return to fight in Iraq after an initial tour in the war zone. When Mejia came home on leave after six months in Iraq, he went AWOL rather than return. Ultimately, he served nine months in prison after the military denied his demand to be discharged as a conscientious objector. "There's a sort of revolution taking place in the streets," Mejia said. "It's not being reported by the mainstream media, but we in the antiwar movement know what's going on. There is a rebellion going on in the ranks of the military that is not being reported."Mejia noted more than 10,000 soldiers have deserted since the Iraq war began four years ago. According to the Army, the number of deserters has increased every year of the war. 3,196 active-duty soldiers deserted the Army last year, compared to 2,543 the year before. CLIP

Troops argue Iraq is 'unwinnable' (23 August 2007)
A belief that Iraq is unwinnable, fears that Afghanistan could go the same way and an overwhelming feeling that the government has not looked after the Armed Forces properly in return for the sacrifices they make. That is what emerges from the answers given by hundreds of servicemen and women in response to the online questionnaire we posted here a few weeks ago. We received nearly 2,000 replies to a set of questions about life in the forces. Those who contacted us did so in defiance of Queen's Regulations. It is forbidden for members of the Armed Forces to talk to the media unsupervised. (...) There were other concerns, in particular the number of casualties and how they are treated back in the UK. One serviceman wrote: "For every fatality, there are many 'broken' soldiers who have suffered hideous injuries. If the sheer scale of those injuries was made common knowledge, the public would be shocked and disgusted." He went on: "The government prefers to evade that issue. The armed forces are being asked to provide more and more with less and less. The system is extremely close to failing."Much of what was said to us, in response to our questionnaire is also being said by senior officers, occasionally in public. CLIP

Dov Zakheim and the Missing Trillions.
What is the most outrageous piece of news that isn’t being discussed? I would venture to say it is the strange tale of Dov Zakheim and the missing trillions. I hear all kinds of numbers. I hear 2.3 trillion from Rumsfield and I hear about one trillion that Zakheim can’t explain. Still, you’ll need to check the dates of Zakheim’s days in the saddle as Pentagon Comptroller and then you can wonder to your hearts content. There’s no doubt the money is gone and there’s no doubt about who should know where it went but…what do I know? I know one trillion dollars is a lot of money. Isn’t one trillion dollars a million million? Zounds!!! Has the cost of the entire Iraqi incursion come to a trillion dollars yet? It certainly isn’t anywhere near 2.3 trillion. Why isn’t this under discussion? Is it just too big a thing, too enormous to comprehend, that our minds go blank when we think about it? CLIP

Chertoff: You Will Submit to the Control Grid (August 16th 2007)
On occasion, our rulers tip their hands a bit too much, especially when confronted with the recalcitrance of subjects in resistance to their best laid plans. “Americans may need passports to board domestic flights or to picnic in a national park next year if they live in one of the states defying the federal Real ID Act,” reports CNN. “The Department of Homeland Security insists Real ID is an essential weapon in the war on terror, but privacy and civil liberties watchdogs are calling the initiative an overly intrusive measure that smacks of Big Brother.” The ACLU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation warn “the IDs and supporting databases” mandated by Real ID legislation “will infringe on privacy.” The EFF “says on its Web site that the information in the databases will lay the groundwork for ‘a wide range of surveillance activities’ by government and businesses that ‘will be able to easily read your private information’ because of the bar code required on each card.” Of course, that would be simply the beginning, as our rulers plan to eventually use biometric technology and not simply a bar code. Moreover, the Real ID scheme will not be limited to the United States. (...) Not mentioned in the CNN article is the fact Chertoff and the Ministry of Fatherland Security plan to merge the Real ID Act with proposals spelled out in documents issued by the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America. (...) As representative Ron Paul noted in a speech delivered on the floor of the U.S. House, the “legislation gives authority to the Secretary of Homeland Security to expand required information on driver’s licenses, potentially including such biometric information as retina scans, finger prints, DNA information, and even Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) radio tracking technology. Including such technology as RFID would mean that the federal government, as well as the governments of Canada and Mexico, would know where Americans are at all time of the day and night.”It has nothing to do with “al-Qaeda” and everything to do with a police state control grid.Confronted with growing resistance, our rulers decided to trot out Chertoff to deliver a message—subjects of the evolving global order will submit, otherwise they will not be allowed to interact with the federal government, something most citizens are required to do on numerous occasions during their lives. Brace yourself for the insolvency crunch (23 Aug 2007)
The liquidity crunch is not yet over: the insolvency crunch has hardly begun. Yes, investors are jumping back into the stock markets, hoping this is just another routine shake-out - much like February 2007, or May 2006 - before the rally resumes. The `buy-on-dips’ orthodoxy dies hard. And yes, speculators have renewed their leveraged bets on the yen and Swiss franc carry trades, borrowing cheap in Tokyo and Zurich to play global assets. The core belief is that nothing has really changed, that the world economy is still in rude good health. Be very careful. Interest rates in Europe and Asia are that much higher now, with delayed effects starting to bite hard. Japan’s economy has stalled to 0.1pc growth in Q2; the euro-zone has slowed to 0.3pc; and China’s refusal to import (by currency manipulation) makes it a drain on world demand. Above all, the credit bubble that perpetuated the rally of the last eighteen months beyond its natural life has definitively burst. (...) "We already thought there was a 40pc chance of a US recession before all this happened, but the risks are now much higher and don't forget that rates on adjustable mortgages will keep rising until a peak next March, so the maximum pain will be in the second and third quarters of 2008," he said. “There will be large bankruptcies, and liquidity is not going to help because too many people bet the farm at the top of the cycle, and they’re now insolvent. A lot more bodies are going to be floating to the surface before this is over,” he said.

Gaping hole found in universe (Aug 23, 2007)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A giant hole in the Universe is devoid of galaxies, stars and even lacks dark matter, astronomers said on Thursday. The team at the University of Minnesota said the void is nearly a billion light-years across and they have no idea why it is there. "Not only has no one ever found a void this big, but we never even expected to find one this size," said astronomy professor Lawrence Rudnick. Writing in the Astrophysical Journal, Rudnick and colleagues Shea Brown and Liliya Williams said they were examining a cold spot using the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe satellite, and found the giant hole. "We already knew there was something different about this spot in the sky," Rudnick said. The region stood out as being colder in a survey of the Cosmic Microwave Background -- the faint radio buzz left over from the Big Bang that gave birth to the Universe. "What we've found is not normal, based on either observational studies or on computer simulations of the large-scale evolution of the Universe," Williams said in a statement. The astronomers said the region even appeared to lack dark matter, which cannot be seen directly but is usually detected by measuring gravitational forces. The void is in a region of sky in the constellation Eridanus, southwest of Orion. The researchers have posted images on the Internet at

Will the Cassini Space probe be used as a nuclear trigger to ignite Saturn and terraform its moons for human colonization?
(...) In conclusion, the potential for a runaway nuclear fusion process that would ignite Saturn as a new sun, Lucifer, appears to be a genuine concern. There is strong reason to believe that there was an attempt in 2003 to ignite Jupiter as the circumstantial evidence suggests. This attempt failed to do anything more than produce a dark spot over an area the size of the Earth than has been observed by astronomers. It may be that a new effort is underway using the Cassini mission as the cover for another attempt to implement the Project Lucifer. The author of "Project Lucifer" is alerting the public to such a possibility even though NASA has yet to announce its plans after Cassini completes its mission. If Cassini is targeted towards Saturn, any resulting catastrophic series of events and the novelty of a new sun being created might produce the right political and social circumstances for a significant erosion of individual liberties. The imposition of draconian national security procedures to deal with unfolding events would dwarf in proportion previous false flag operations such as 911 which have witnessed an undesirable increase in the influence of national security organizations as a result of catastrophic events (see: ).The general public is urged to familiarize themselves with the issues concerning the possible terraforming of Saturn's moons by an artificially contrived nuclear fusion process on Saturn itself. While there may be long term public benefit from terraforming Saturn's moons, such a policy needs to be publicly debated and not secretly implemented given the dangers involved. Furthermore, all information concerning Project Lucifer and the early unsuccessful effort to ignite Jupiter by the use of Galileo as a nuclear device needs to also be released to the public. The potential for catastrophic events to occur on Earth as a result of a successful effort to ignite Saturn should not be lightly dismissed due to 10% of Saturn's mass possibly being ejected in an initial blast. It is highly recommended that public pressure is applied on NASA officials not to approve the Cassini mission being deliberated targeted at Saturn for self-destruction, and that its mission is prolonged until a suitable way is found to safely dispose of the craft and its dangerous plutonium fuel.

Frankenforests: GE Trees Threaten Ecosystem Collapse (02 August 2007)
Across the US and the world, the timber industry is driving research behind genetically engineered forests. But environmentalists worry that it will open an ecological Pandora's Box.In China, over a million poplar trees have been planted since 2002 to combat deforestation. But the move has not been widely applauded by everyone. The poplars, which are genetically engineered, are China's first foray into the world of transgenic forestry - or "frankenforests" - and other countries are not far behind. As the biotech industry continues to lay the groundwork for genetically engineered crops - poorly tested, widely debated and yet plugged as a technological wonder - a potentially greater threat to biodiversity has begun to emerge. Pushed forward by biotech and the multibillion-dollar timber industry, genetically engineered trees are the latest invention."The industry has tried very hard to keep it quiet, or tout the technology as benign and beneficial to the environment," says Anne Petermann, co-founder of the Global Justice Ecology Project, a nonprofit established to advance global justice through ecological awareness. "The technology is moving forward very quickly, outpacing regulations. There are no controls in place to properly address or assess the risks - which are major." GE trees are planted in monoculture forests, which look more like plantations, and pose serious risks to the ecosystem. Trees live decades or centuries longer than plants, and their seeds can travel hundreds of miles, increasing the likelihood of gene contamination to wild species. The technology was created to optimize the manufacturing process, but environmentalists worry that it will open an ecological Pandora's Box and threaten the health of the forests we depend on for survival. BeliefWatch: Reincarnate (Aug. 20-27, 2007 issue)
In one of history's more absurd acts of totalitarianism, China has banned Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission. According to a statement issued by the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the law, which goes into effect next month and strictly stipulates the procedures by which one is to reincarnate, is "an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation." But beyond the irony lies China's true motive: to cut off the influence of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual and political leader, and to quell the region's Buddhist religious establishment more than 50 years after China invaded the small Himalayan country. By barring any Buddhist monk living outside China from seeking reincarnation, the law effectively gives Chinese authorities the power to choose the next Dalai Lama, whose soul, by tradition, is reborn as a new human to continue the work of relieving suffering. The ONLY thing he has going for him to persist in his abuse of the Constitution is the corporate media CON job that 1) there is not enough time to do it, 2) that it would make Democrats look bad or hurt their chances in 2008, or that 3) for some other idiotic, unpatriotic reason Congress would never do it.

But there is an impeachment initiative building rapidly, and YOU are part of that initiative because you have already spoken out in the National Cheney Impeachment POLL (with more than 100,000 votes so far), and if you are asking yourself what more you could be doing to help make impeachment happen now here is what we are doing.

Claim your very own snappy, custom embroidered "IMPEACH CHENEY?" cap. You will find it will empower you engage all your friends and neighbors in a serious discussion of the issue, which is what the question mark on it is designed to do, to tie into the impeachment POLL. And to understand the urgency of the moment consider the latest news:

If you thought the Cheney White House could not be so crazy as to attack Iran given the existing debacle in Iraq, we have news for you. They ARE that crazy. As reported by Time magazine on line yesterday, an administration official declared unilaterally "There will be an attack on Iran", based on the totally bogus assertion that they are the source for the IEDs being used in Iraq. The only way to stop the insanity is to impeach the Vice President immediately and we must do everything we could have done to make it happen.

Never mind that all anyone has to do is Google the words "missing explosives iraq" and in seconds you will find all the links to how 340 bulk tons of the most powerful military explosives just walked away from the Al Qa'qaa storage depot and others, which HAD been under U.N. seal, until they were left entirely unguarded for a month and a half while the U.S. military was only interested in protecting the oil ministry.

Never mind that all one of the strategic Keystone Cops in the Vice President's office would have to do is Google the words "ieds copper discs" and in seconds they too would find all the links to how local machine shops in Iraq were cranking out the parts needed to make all those IEDS as a cottage industry, given that they now have enough stolen high explosives stockpiled for a 200 year insurgency at current rates of attacks.

And yet still the push is from Cheney's office to tell even bigger lies about Iran than he ever told about Iraq, and to escalate yet another fraudulent casus belli into world war with a billion Muslims, 99.999 percent of whom would have rather just be left alone in peace had we not gone out of our way to bomb their cities. If there is time to bomb Iran, there is enough time to STOP it.

Remember that Cheney is the originator of the irrational 1 percent doctrine, by which he asserted that even if the chance of potential threat is very small we must act preemptively to take that threat out. As a result of such doctrinaire dogma, 99 percent of the million Iraqis killed so far, and of the millions more made into refugees or maimed, have been innocent bystander civilians. That's a whole lot of hearts and minds. Operating with at most 1 percent intelligence, and 99 percent the certainty of a paranoid, delusional madman, Dick Cheney has turned U.S. foreign policy into a self-fulfilling disaster.

This is the same Dick Cheney who when interviewed in 1994 explained (in a private assessment he wishes he could suppress now) what a bad idea it would have been to try to depose Saddam by ourselves all alone with nobody from the region with us, and how it would lead to nothing but a quagmire and Iraq flying apart into sectarian pieces. THAT 9/11 did not change. But were they candid with the American people about the risks of an occupation of Iraq? No, they lied about that too. They told us it would be a six week cake walk with candy and flowers, to sucker us into sacrificing thousands of American lives and a trillion dollar from our treasury to Cheney's war profiteering cronies, only to then tell us that's the reason we can't just leave now.

Only impeachment can save us now. Only impeachment can remove Cheney from office before he executes the final solution leading inevitably to all out nuclear war and to the end of civilization. We do not have time for the next election to save us. With more and more evidence surfacing that the last two presidential elections were stolen outright, with them putting into place secret presidential directives to declare martial law and worse in response to the crisis they themselves are determined to precipitate, only if we create the political movement that will be required to save ourselves.

Please also consider making a donation to Dennis Kucinich, on the basis that he is out there fighting for us on so many issues. Who else is leading the way calling for the impeachment of Cheney? Who else is leading the way calling for our troops to come home from Iraq . . period, not drag out an occupation for years or decades that will only continue to inflame the Middle East and breed more hatred and terrorism. Canada and Bush's North American Union Project

By Rodrigue Tremblay

August 9, 2007

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist." --Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), 34th US President, Farewell Address, Jan. 17, 1961

“An agreement [with the U.S.] to harmonize trade, security, or defence practices would, in the end, require Canada and Mexico to . . . cede to the United States power over foreign trade and investment, environmental regulation, immigration, and, to a large degree, foreign policy, and even monetary and fiscal policy.” --Roy McLaren, former liberal trade minister

Look for a very strong backlash coming from the Canadian people, but also from the American and Mexican peoples, once they clearly understand what the Bush-Calderon-Harper trio has been concocting in near complete secrecy and with nearly no public debate whatsoever, over the last few years.

Indeed, the three relatively unpopular governments presently in charge in Washington, Ottawa and Mexico, have aligned themselves with very large corporations, most of them American owned, to lay the foundations for a new North American Union, (NAU) also called the "Deep Integration" project. This would be a new permanent alliance that would be de facto placed under American control. Canada and Mexico would have to harmonize many of their laws and regulations to suit the interests of big business and the undemocratic and imperial ambitions of the U.S. government around the world.

With such a plan for an enlarged continental integration at both the economic and political levels, we are far from the initial program of fair and free trade for goods and services and for removing barriers to trade between the three countries, as initially envisaged by the 1988 Free Trade Agreement, (FTA) between Canada and the United States. It has to be remembered that under the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canada not only accepted that Mexico be incorporated into the North American free trade zone, but made substantial concessions regarding the Investment Canada Act's rules for American takeovers of Canadian companies and for a privileged American access to Canadian energy resources. This should have sufficed to keep the American market open to Canadian exporters. It seems that this is no longer the case. Large corporations and the U.S. administration alike want to take advantage of the terrorist threat to go much further in extracting concessions from Canada.

Indeed, under the leadership of large American owned corporations, which operate freely on both sides of the border, and with the new security concerns of the U.S. administration, the initial trade objective is being further expanded and pushed to a much higher level. The idea now is to turn the trade agreements into some sort of an umbrella political organization that would be parallel to the 27-nation European Union.

In fact, it could mean a more ambitious project that could go even further than the EU toward economic and political integration in North America. In Europe, the more than two dozen participating countries have retained control over their armed forces and over their foreign policies and, what is very important, no single country exercises a hegemonic control over the entire alliance. That would not be the case in North America, however, because of the overwhelming importance of the United States vis-a-vis the other two countries.

Indeed, what has been advanced for Canada, Mexico and the United States -- three countries very much dissimilar in populations, cultures and outlooks -- could go as far as de facto merging the armed forces and foreign policies of all three countries to form a sort of Fortress North America under the protectorate of the United States. Any such deep integration beyond trade relationships would place the United States and its government in the driver's seat, with the other two countries somewhat relegated to the status of near political and economic colonies.

It won't work. For one thing, the Canadian people will never accept that Canada become a colony of the United States, and the current minority government of Stephen Harper could pay dearly politically if it continues pushing in that direction. Canadians do not want their armed forces and their foreign policy to be de facto merged with those of imperial America. Moreover, they do not want their natural resources to be placed under U.S. control and exploited nearly completely by large American corporations, which have little regard for Canada's sovereignty and little concern for the welfare of Canadians. Also, they do not want the Canadian dollar ditched in favor of a less and less attractive U.S. dollar, as some have suggested.

However, all this could be the end result of the secretive efforts that have been deployed at the highest levels under the disguise of the mysterious acronym of "SPP," the so-called program of Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, also referred to by its proponents as "Deep Integration." This integration initiative was officially launched in a summit meeting between George W. Bush (USA), Vicente Fox (Mexico) and Paul Martin (Canada), held in Waco Texas, on March 23, 2005.

Large Canadian corporations and not so "Canadian" corporations any more -- such as Alcan, about to be sold to British owned Rio Tinto -- and many Canadian subsidiaries of American corporations have been the driving force behind the push for a North American Union. In Canada, they are regrouped within the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE), which has been lobbying the Harper government in favor of the plan.

Among the 150 corporate members of the Canadian Council of CEOs, alongside large Canadian banks and corporations, one finds many leading American corporations that have branches or subsidiaries in Canada, such as du Pont, FedEx, General Electric, General Motors, Chrysler, Hewlett-Packard, Home Depot, IBM, Imperial Oil, Kodak, 3M, Microsoft, Pratt & Whitney, Suncor, Wyeth, Xerox, etc. These CEOs do not really see Canada as a country separate from the United States, but more as an adjacent market to be occupied and controlled.

It was four years ago, in January 2003, that the CCCE launched its North American Security and Prosperity Initiative (NASPI). The politicians then followed suit. The CCCE's initiative advanced a strategy comprising five major elements:

1- The reinvention of Canada-U.S.-Mexico borders;

2- The maximization of regulatory efficiencies;

3- The negotiation of a comprehensive continental resource security pact;

4- The negotiation of a North American defence alliance;

5- And the creation of a new institutional framework for this new North American Union.

Then the Canadian Council of CEOs enlisted the support of two other organizations, first, the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations, a foreign affairs outfit that has been strongly supportive of George W. Bush's war against Iraq and, second, the Mexican Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales.

Their joint task force, called the Independent Task Force on the Future of North America, issued a report in May 2005, whose title was "Building a North American Community." The report contained 39 specific recommendations aimed at de facto erasing borders and at creating a single North American economic and security space within a North American political partnership, involving the United States, Canada and Mexico.

In a nutshell, the Task Force’s central recommendation was to establish, by 2010 (only three years from now!!!), a North American economic and security community, the North American Union, the boundaries of which would be defined by a common external tariff and a common outer security perimeter, including a common border pass. That is the essence of the proposed new "Deep Integration" project: One market, one economic border, and one official security apparatus. Nobody is talking yet of "one flag" or "one currency," but that could come.

This proposal has been discussed at summits held by the leaders of the three involved countries, first in Waco, Texas, in March 2005, to launch the initiative, then one year later in Cancun, Mexico, in March 2006, where it was decided to create the 30-member North American Competitiveness Council (NACC), a tri-national working group responsible for setting priorities for the SPP and to act as a stable driver of the deep integration process through changes in government in all three countries.

CLIP - Read the missing part at

Therefore, we have to conclude that the plan for a very "Deep Integration" of Canada within North America is basically flawed, if not fundamentally democratically subversive. There has been no thorough public debate on the issue, even though the minority Harper government would certainly have to consult and persuade Canadians before tabling any special legislation that would need to be enacted before the project could be implemented.

Such a public debate has not taken place yet. On the contrary, everything seems to have been planned to keep it away from the public eye with all discussions being held behind closed doors. This should be enough to raise suspicions, even though the ongoing discussions are not yet legally binding. In a more or less near future, however, the ad hoc arrangements so discussed are likely to lead to a new formal agreement or even a new treaty between the three countries. This is presently denied, but the logic of the operation militates in favor of the last option.

I personally think the issue is of such paramount importance that sooner or later we need a countrywide referendum on the entire "Deep Integration" project. A general election is not sufficient to settle such a complicated issue, because a single political party can gather a minority of votes and squeeze into power between numerous opposition parties. No fundamental democratic legitimacy for such an important political project can be obtained through a general election. For that, a special national referendum would be required so that the sovereign people can decide.

SPP Summit Ends with ‘Conspiracy’ Denial (August 22, 2007)
Meeting considers agenda of secret multi-national business coalition -- President Bush used the occasion of the first Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America summit in Waco, Texas, in 2005 to call The Minuteman Project “vigilantes.” Yesterday, at the third SPP summit in Montebello, Quebec, he charged that anyone who was concerned the SPP was advancing a North American Union agenda or supporting NAFTA Superhighways was a “conspiracy theorist.”Such accusations likely will end up being the most memorable moments of their respective meetings, as other meetings, agendas and decisions have been cloaked in secrecy. As the Montebello event closed, Bush, Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper joined to state that the national sovereignty of the three nations was not at risk, even though under SPP North American integration had advanced to the point where national independence was being balanced by continental independence. Congress tells Bush: Back off SPP agenda (August 17, 2007)
Lawmakers' letter warns 'stealth' effort to 'harmonize' could undermine security -- Twenty-two members of the U.S. House of Representatives – 21 Republicans and a Democrat – are urging President Bush to back off his North American integration efforts when he attends the third summit meeting on the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America next week in Montebello, Quebec. They make it clear that continuing any such agenda at this point would be disregarding growing apprehension in Congress about the plans. Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP)
From August 20-21, Stephen Harper will welcome his American idol George W. Bush and Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon to Montebello, Quebec. What will be on the agenda? We can only guess at this point, because all of the meetings to review the progress of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) have taken place in secret so far. And a 25-kilometre security perimeter is designed to prevent protestors and critics from getting anywhere near the meeting this August. But the Council of Canadians is determined to break the silence and ensure that citizens’ voices are heard. The SPP – which is being implemented without any public or parliamentary scrutiny – is about eliminating Canada’s ability to set its own independent regulatory standards, environmental protection measures, energy security, foreign, military, immigration and a frighteningly wide range of other policies. The decisions that Harper, Bush and Calderon make from Aug. 20-21 will affect the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the human rights and civil liberties we enjoy. STOP THE SPP! - End War and Privatization - Protect our Environment - Reclaim Democracy

Montebello SPP Summit: Canada's Sovereignty in Jeopardy: the Militarization of North America
Canadian jurisdiction over its Northern territories was redefined, following an April 2002 military agreement between Ottawa and Washington. This agreement allows for the deployment of US troops anywhere in Canada, as well as the stationing of US warships in Canada's territorial waters. Following the creation of US Northern Command in April 2002, Washington announced unilaterally that NORTHCOM's territorial jurisdiction (land, sea, air) extended from the Caribbean basin to the Canadian arctic territories. (...) In Canada, the renewed NORAD agreement went virtually unnoticed. There was no official pronouncement by the Canadian government of Stephen Harper. There was no analysis or commentary of its significance and implications for Canadian territorial sovereignty. The agreement was barely reported by the Canadian media. Operating under a "North American" emblem (i.e. a North American Command), the US military would have jurisdiction over Canadian territory from coast to coast; extending from the St Laurence Valley to the Queen Elizabeth archipelago in the Canadian Arctic. The agreement would allow for the establishment of "North American" military bases on Canadian territory. From an economic standpoint, it would also integrate the Canadian North, with its vast resources in energy and raw materials, with Alaska. (...) Military integration is intimately related to the ongoing process of integration in the spheres of trade, finance and investment. Needless to say, a large part of the Canadian economy is already in the hands of US corporate interests. In turn, the interests of big business in Canada tend to coincide with those of the US.Canada is already a de facto economic protectorate of the USA. NAFTA has not only opened up new avenues for US corporate expansion, it has laid the groundwork under the existing North American umbrella for the post 9/11 integration of military command structures, public security, intelligence and law enforcement. No doubt, Canada's entry into US Northern Command will be presented to public opinion as part of Canada-US "cooperation", as something which is "in the national interest", which "will create jobs for Canadians", and "will make Canada more secure".Ultimately what is at stake is that beneath the rhetoric, Canada will cease to function as a Nation: -Its borders will be controlled by US officials and confidential information on Canadians will be shared with Homeland Security. -US troops and Special Forces will be able to enter Canada as a result of a binational arrangement. -Canadian citizens can be arrested by US officials, acting on behalf of their Canadian counterparts and vice versa. But there is something perhaps even more fundamental in defining and understanding where Canada and Canadians stand as nation. By endorsing a Canada-US "integration" in the spheres of defense, homeland security, police and intelligence, Canada not remains a full fledged member of George W. Bush's "Coalition of the Willing", it will directly participate, through integrated military command structures, in the US war agenda in Central Asia and the Middle East, including the massacre of civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, the torture of POWs, the establishment of concentration camps, etc.Canada would no longer have an independent foreign policy. Under an integrated North American Command, a North American national security doctrine would be formulated. Canada would be obliged to embrace Washington's pre-emptive military doctrine, its bogus "war on terrorism which is used as a pretext for waging war in the Middle East. The Canadian judicial system would be affected. Moreover, binational integration in the areas of Homeland security, immigration, policing of the US-Canada border, not to mention the anti-terrorist legislation, would imply pari passu acceptance of the US sponsored police State, its racist policies, its "ethnic profiling" directed against Muslims, the arbitrary arrest of anti-war activists.

No one knows what goes on behind closed doors, which is why Harper must be tried for sedition
Stephen Harper has been doing a lot of laundry this past week or so. First, he sorted through his cabinet and put some of his ministerial sock puppets through the spin cycle. Despite the best efforts of our palace press to present the event as "real news," it was a political nullity. (...) The fact that Harper refuses to debate the SPP fuels legitimate speculation that something criminal is going on, and that he is betraying the interests of Canadians. Sue Corcoran of the Council of Canadians rightly points out that the SPP, unlike the North American Free [sic] Trade Agreement, is not being discussed among elected legislators in full view of the public; rather, it's being negotiated in secret by unelected bureaucrats. That is cause enough to warrant an investigation of Harper for sedition on the grounds that he is usurping the role of Parliament, and undermining the sovereignty of Canada and the welfare of Canadians. SPP Protest: Union Leader Stops Provocateurs

Date: 17 Aug 2007
From: Mike Nickerson (
Subject: The SPP - disaster or solution?

The Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) - disaster or solution? It is a Question of Direction.

For those of us opposing Deep North American Integration, the Canada, USA, Mexico SPP negotiations, August 20 - 21, at the Chateau Montebello near Ottawa, are a nightmare. Nevertheless, as long as Growth (the expansion of monetary activity) is seen as society's primary goal, efforts to stop the SPP will be an uphill battle. Mass production and economies of scale have long served expansion. The SPP would accommodate both by providing uninhibited access to natural resources, labour and markets for businesses with continental operations. The problem is that growth, for growth's sake, is past its "best before date."

To reclaim local governance with its hands-on appreciation of environmental and social impacts, we have to challenge the legitimacy of perpetual economic expansion.

Climate change, peak oil and all manner of other natural resource and pollution problems are aggravated by ever expanding human activity. Like a child who has grown to maturity, humanity now faces adult responsibilities. And now that we face planetary limits, we can no longer disregard the natural laws of resource limitation and tolerance to accumulating waste. Any species that fills its habitat and breaks these laws is dealt with in the "court of natural selection."

While simple mathematics clearly show that getting bigger makes resource and waste problems worse, customs and institutions, from our historic and prehistoric past, encourage and compel continued growth. For tens of thousands of years before we filled the Earth, growth served us well. The SPP answers the familiar call -- to our peril.

To put out a fire, one throws water at the source of the flames. To stop growth inducing trade deals, we need to question the legitimacy upon which they are based. It is a Question of Direction.

A Civil Defense Mini-Manual to Resisting and Defeating Illegal Occupation by Martial Law: How to use Martial Law Against the Dummies

Martial law – "Military government involving the suspension of ordinary law".

Oxford American Dictionary

VANCOUVER, B.C. – A matrix of martial law legislation and Executive Orders of the Bush Administration is now in place for the abolition of constitutional democracy, the re-location, incarceration, and depopulation of the North American public, and the illegal expropriation of its property.

The matrix (the "Depopulation matrix") is designed to be activated by a false flag state terror attack against a major urban center in the U.S., possibly using nuclear or biological weapons.

False Flag Operations, The Police State Road Map & The Depopulation Policy – Setting the Stage

The Police State Road Map states why martial law – military government - is now trying to occupy the USA.

"From recent pronouncements and legislative developments it appears both the U.S. and U.K. governments may suspend Parliamentary democracy after the next major terror attack. With the War on Terror expected to go on forever, we may soon find ourselves under a form of indefinite martial law. What is likely to be the purpose of this scenario for the police state planners? The populace will be required to surrender rights to life, liberty and property for short term expediency. This will be the window of opportunity the planners need to purge dissident groups and exploit the popular panic to introduce permanent legal or constitutional changes."  Chapter 10, Martial Law, The Police State Road Map.

Depopulation is the deeper reason for military government. Terms like "Martial Law," "New World Order," "Security & Prosperity Partnership" are "code words" for a Depopulation policy to reduce global population by between 2 billion and 4 billion persons. The False Flag Operation of September 11, 2001 was engineered by an international war crimes racketeering organization to implement the final stages of a world Depopulation policy.

Martial Law: The Depopulation Legal Matrix

The Depopulation legal matrix is itself a False Flag Operation against our constitutional democracy. There is no functional reason to cancel constitutional democracy and the Bill of Rights in the USA, other than the imposition of a police state for the purpose of Depopulation.

• USA PATRIOT ACT (Signed by GW Bush on October 26, 2001) – Undercuts freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights: First Amendment - Freedom of religion, speech, assembly, and the press; Fourth Amendment - Freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures; Fifth Amendment - No person to be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law; Sixth Amendment - Right to a speedy public trial by an impartial jury, right to be informed of the facts of the accusation, right to confront witnesses and have the assistance of counsel; Eighth Amendment - No excessive bail or cruel and unusual punishment shall be imposed; Fourteenth Amendment - All persons (citizens and noncitizens) within the US are entitled to due process and the equal protection of the laws.

• North American Union/ Security & Prosperity Partnership (SPP) (Signed March 23, 2005) –The SPP is a regulatory structure for implementing the legal matrix of the Depopulation policy in North America (Canada-USA-Mexico). SPP is now integrating monetary (the "Amero" common currency) and security regulations. A false flag state terror attack would activate the Depopulation legal matrix in Canada, Mexico and the USA under a USA central military government.

• Military Commissions Act (Signed September 28, 2006) – Eliminates the right of Habeas Corpus and allows for military arrest, prosecution, imprisonment and execution of US Citizens as "Enemy Combatants." Yale Law Professor Bruce Ackerman has stated, "The [Military Commissions Act]....authorizes the president to seize American citizens as enemy combatants, even if they have never left the United States. And once thrown into military prison, they cannot expect a trial by their peers or any other of the normal protections of the Bill of Rights."

• John Warner Defense Authorization Act (Passed September 30, 2006) – Undercuts the Posse Comitatus Act prohibiting the use of troops in the United States. Renames the Insurrection Act of 1807 as the Enforcement of the Laws to Restore Public Order Act. Expands the power of the President to deploy troops in the USA to include "natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition"—and such "condition" is not defined or limited. The Insurrection Act authorizes the president to deploy troops within the United States only "to suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy."

• National Security Presidential Directive 51 (May 9, 2007) – Authorizes U.S. President to assume dictatorial control of Executive, Legislative and Judicial Branches of government and direct all private sector activities, in the event of a "catastrophic emergency," defined as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions."

• Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq (July 17, 2007) - On its face, this Executive Order grants GW Bush the right to seize the property of any person deemed to have threatened the peace in Iraq. It is so vague that peacemarchers could be targeted by the order. Yet, given the electoral results of the 2006 Mid-term Election, and evidence suggesting that occupation by US and UK troops in Iraq is actually destabilizing the region, an independent court applying the Order could reasonably find that the personal property of George W. Bush be seized.

Nurture the Body Politic

The matrix can be defeated by our taking active part in the body politic, infusing vital, popular energy into our constitutional democracy:

• Become personally involved in the 2008 electoral process on the anti-Depopulation matrix platform – There are over 550,000 elected political offices in the USA. Run for office; work for a candidate, at the municipal, county, state, federal level.

• Aggressively seek removal of U.S. President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney through the constitutional means of Article II Impeachment or Article III criminal prosecution for treason in the 9/11 false flag attack on the USA.

• Publicize the Depopulation matrix's existence and attack the constitutionality and legitimacy of its component false flag "laws and Executive Orders" at every opportunity in every available arena.

• Create community phone and email trees to coordinate information and resistance in the event of a False Flag attack by the Bush Administration on the population of the USA.

Could martial law ever become a reality in America? Some fear any nuclear, biological or chemical attack on U.S. soil might trigger just that. KSLA News 12 has discovered that the clergy would help the government with potentially their biggest problem: Us. Charleton Heston's now-famous speech before the National Rifle Association at a convention back in 2000 will forever be remembered as a stirring moment for all 2nd Amendment advocates. At the end of his remarks, Heston held up his antique rifle and told the crowd in his Moses-like voice, "over my cold, dead hands." While Heston, then serving as the NRA President, made those remarks in response to calls for more gun control laws at the time, those words live on. Heston's declaration captured a truly American value: An over-arching desire to protect our freedoms. But gun confiscation is exactly what happened during the state of emergency following Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, along with forced relocation. U.S. Troops also arrived, something far easier to do now, thanks to last year's elimination of the 1878 Posse Comitatus act, which had forbid regular U.S. Army troops from policing on American soil. If martial law were enacted here at home, like depicted in the movie "The Siege", easing public fears and quelling dissent would be critical. And that's exactly what the 'Clergy Response Team' helped accomplish in the wake of Katrina. Dr. Durell Tuberville serves as chaplain for the Shreveport Fire Department and the Caddo Sheriff's Office. Tuberville said of the clergy team's mission, "the primary thing that we say to anybody is, 'let's cooperate and get this thing over with and then we'll settle the differences once the crisis is over.'" Such clergy response teams would walk a tight-rope during martial law between the demands of the government on the one side, versus the wishes of the public on the other. "In a lot of cases, these clergy would already be known in the neighborhoods in which they're helping to diffuse that situation," assured Sandy Davis. He serves as the director of the Caddo-Bossier Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. For the clergy team, one of the biggest tools that they will have in helping calm the public down or to obey the law is the bible itself, specifically Romans 13. Dr. Tuberville elaborated, "because the government's established by the Lord, you know. And, that's what we believe in the Christian faith. That's what's stated in the scripture." Civil rights advocates believe the amount of public cooperation during such a time of unrest may ultimately depend on how long they expect a suspension of rights might last.

Fatigue Cripples US Army in Iraq

By Peter Beaumont

The Observer UK

12 August 2007

Exhaustion and combat stress are besieging US troops in Iraq as they battle with a new type of warfare. Some even rely on Red Bull to get through the day. As desertions and absences increase, the military is struggling to cope with the crisis.

Lieutenant Clay Hanna looks sick and white. Like his colleagues he does not seem to sleep. Hanna says he catches up by napping on a cot between operations in the command centre, amid the noise of radio. He is up at 6am and tries to go to sleep by 2am or 3am. But there are operations to go on, planning to be done and after-action reports that need to be written. And war interposes its own deadly agenda that requires his attention and wakes him up.

When he emerges from his naps there is something old and paper-thin about his skin, something sketchy about his movements as the days go by.

The Americans he commands, like the other men at Sullivan - a combat outpost in Zafraniya, south east Baghdad - hit their cots when they get in from operations. But even when they wake up there is something tired and groggy about them. They are on duty for five days at a time and off for two days. When they get back to the forward operating base, they do their laundry and sleep and count the days until they will get home. It is an exhaustion that accumulates over the patrols and the rotations, over the multiple deployments, until it all joins up, wiping out any memory of leave or time at home. Until life is nothing but Iraq.

Hanna and his men are not alone in being tired most of the time. A whole army is exhausted and worn out. You see the young soldiers washed up like driftwood at Baghdad's international airport, waiting to go on leave or returning to their units, sleeping on their body armour on floors and in the dust.

Where once the war in Iraq was defined in conversations with these men by untenable ideas - bringing democracy or defeating al-Qaeda - these days the war in Iraq is defined by different ways of expressing the idea of being weary. It is a theme that is endlessly reiterated as you travel around Iraq. 'The army is worn out. We are just keeping people in theatre who are exhausted,' says a soldier working for the US army public affairs office who is supposed to be telling me how well things have been going since the 'surge' in Baghdad began.

They are not supposed to talk like this. We are driving and another of the public affairs team adds bitterly: 'We should just be allowed to tell the media what is happening here. Let them know that people are worn out. So that their families know back home. But it's like we've become no more than numbers now.'

The first soldier starts in again. 'My husband was injured here. He hit an improvised explosive device. He already had a spinal injury. The blast shook out the plates. He's home now and has serious issues adapting. But I'm not allowed to go back home to see him. If I wanted to see him I'd have to take leave time (two weeks). And the army counts it.'

A week later, in the northern city of Mosul, an officer talks privately. 'We're plodding through this,' he says after another patrol and another ambush in the city centre. 'I don't know how much more plodding we've got left in us.'

When the soldiers talk like this there is resignation. There is a corrosive anger, too, that bubbles out, like the words pouring unbidden from a chaplain's assistant who has come to bless a patrol. 'Why don't you tell the truth? Why don't you journalists write that this army is exhausted?'

It is a weariness that has created its own culture of superstition. There are vehicle commanders who will not let the infantrymen in the back fall asleep on long operations - not because they want the men alert, but because, they say, bad things happen when people fall asleep. So the soldiers drink multiple cans of Rip It and Red Bull to stay alert and wired.

But the exhaustion of the US army emerges most powerfully in the details of these soldiers' frayed and worn-out lives. Everywhere you go you hear the same complaints: soldiers talk about divorces, or problems with the girlfriends that they don't see, or about the children who have been born and who are growing up largely without them.

'I counted it the other day,' says a major whose partner is also a soldier. 'We have been married for five years. We added up the days. Because of Iraq and Afghanistan we have been together for just seven months. Seven months ... We are in a bad place. I don't know whether this marriage can survive it.'

The anecdotal evidence on the ground confirms what others - prominent among them General Colin Powell, the former US Secretary of State - have been insisting for months now: that the US army is 'about broken'. Only a third of the regular army's brigades now qualify as combat-ready. Officers educated at the elite West Point academy are leaving at a rate not seen in 30 years, with the consequence that the US army has a shortfall of 3,000 commissioned officers - and the problem is expected to worsen.

And it is not only the soldiers that are worn out. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have led to the destruction, or wearing out, of 40 per cent of the US army's equipment, totalling at a recent count $212bn (£105bn).

But it is in the soldiers themselves - and in the ordinary stories they tell - that the exhaustion of the US military is most obvious, coming amid warnings that soldiers serving multiple Iraq deployments, now amounting to several years, are 50 per cent more likely than those with one tour to suffer from acute combat stress.

The army's exhaustion is reflected in problems such as the rate of desertion and unauthorised absences - a problem, it was revealed earlier this year, that had increased threefold on the period before the war in Afghanistan and had resulted in thousands of negative discharges.

'They are scraping to get people to go back and people are worn out,' said Thomas Grieger, a senior US navy psychiatrist, told the International Herald Tribune in April.

'Modern war is exhausting,' says Major Stacie Caswell, an occupational therapist with a combat stress unit attached to the military hospital in Mosul. Her unit runs long group sessions to help soldiers with emerging mental health and discipline problems: often they have seen friends killed and injured, or are having problems stemming from issues at home - responsible for 50 to 60 per cent of their cases. One of the most common problems in Iraq is sleep disorders.

'This is a different kind of war,' says Caswell. 'In World War II it was clear who the good guys and the bad guys were. You knew what you would go through on the battlefield.' Now she says the threat is all around. And soldiering has changed. 'Now we have so many things to do...'

'And the soldier in Vietnam,' interjects Sergeant John Valentine from the same unit, 'did not get to see the coverage from home that these soldiers do. We see what is going on at home on the political scene. They think the war is going to end. Then we have the frustration and confusion. That is fatiguing. Mentally tiring.'

'Not only that,' says Caswell, 'but because of the nature of what we do now, the number of tasks in comparison with previous generations - even as you are finishing your 15 months here you are immediately planning and training for your next tour.' Valentine adds: 'There is no decompression.'

The consequence is a deep-seated problem of retention and recruitment that in turn, says Caswell, has led the US army to reduce its standards for joining the military, particularly over the issue of no longer looking too hard at any previous history of mental illness. 'It is a question of honesty, and we are not investigating too deeply or we are issuing waivers. The consequence is that we are seeing people who do not have the same coping skills when they get here, and this can be difficult.

'We are also seeing older soldiers coming in - up to 41 years old - and that is causing its own problems. They have difficulty dealing with the physical impact of the war and also interacting with the younger men.'

Valentine says: 'We are not only watering down the quality of the soldiers but the leadership too. The good leaders get out. I've seen it. And right now we are on the down slope.'

"War Tsar" Calls for Return of the Draft to Take the Strain

America's 'war tsar' has called for the nation's political leaders to consider bringing back the draft to help a military exhausted by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In a radio interview, Lieutenant General Douglas Lute said the option had always been open to boost America's all-volunteer army by drafting in young men in the same way as happened in Vietnam. 'I think it makes sense to consider it,' he said. Lute was appointed 'war tsar' earlier this year after President Bush decided a single figure was needed to oversee the nation's military efforts abroad.

Rumours of a return to the draft have long circulated in military circles as the pressure from fighting two large conflicts at the same time builds on America's forces. However, politically it would be extremely difficult to achieve, especially for any leader hoping to be elected in 2008. Bush has previously ruled out the suggestion as unnecessary.

Lute, however, said the war was causing stress to military families and, as a result, was having an impact on levels of re-enlistment. 'This kind of stress plays out across dinner tables and in living- room conversations within these families. Ultimately the health of the all-volunteer force is going to rest on those sorts of personal family decisions,' he said.

A draft would revive bad memories of the turmoil of the 1960s and early 1970s when tens of thousands of young men were drafted to fight and die in Vietnam. Few other policies proved as divisive in America and the memories of anti-war protesters burning their draft cards and fleeing to Canada are still vivid in the memory.

Subject: The great fish rip-off

The world's oceans are being emptied, and fishers in developing countries can't find fish--all because of subsidies in rich countries that drive overfishing. This month, the WTO is writing new global fishing rules. Will you send a message to your trade minister to support fair and sustainable fishing?

Often, the issues that affect the most lives don't make the headlines. This month, we have an opportunity to do something big about one of them: the global fishing crisis.

Fishers in developing countries are catching fewer and fewer fish--because of massive overfishing by industrialized fishing fleets from rich countries, fleets subsidized with tens of billions of Euros every year. As a result, fish populations are now collapsing around the globe, and could soon be pushed beyond recovery.

But our oceans don't have to die. This September, the World Trade Organization will release a new proposal for global fishing rules--and right now, trade ministers are deciding what those rules should be. If enough of us urge our trade ministers to support a better system, we preserve our oceans for future generations--and for the one billion humans who rely on fish for protein today. Click here to send your trade minister a message in support fairness and sustainability:

A recent study found that 90% of the ocean's big fish--tuna, swordfish, and marlin--are already gone. But it's not the countries with the greatest need that are catching too many of these fish--it's the subsidized fishing fleets from the rich countries. These fleets don't just trawl the open ocean--they fish off the coasts of developing countries, robbing local fishers and their communities of desperately needed food supplies. And as technology has developed, the crisis has accelerated.

Last week, Dr. Francis K. E. Nunoo, a Ghanaian scientist who studies fisheries ecology, interviewed a local fisherman for this campaign. the fisherman told him:

"Ten years ago, during the peak fishing season of the year, my boat is filled with a single throw of the net. In recent times, we throw the gear about 7 times before filling the same boat. And the situation is even worse this year."

And here's what Sall Samba, an octopus fisherman in Mauritania and father of six, told a reporter:

"You used to be able to fish right in the port. Now, the only thing you can catch here is water."

A group of 125 scientists wrote a letter to the director-general of the WTO, urging him to take action on fishing subsidies. Their argument:

"There are only decades left before the damage we have inflicted on the oceans becomes permanent. We are at a crossroads. One road leads to a world with tremendously diminished marine life. The other leads to one with oceans again teeming with abundance, where the world can rely on the oceans for protein, and enjoy its wildlife. The choices we make today will determine our path for the future."

The World Trade Organization is governed by its 151 member countries. Avaaz members live in every one of those countries--and so, if we act together, we have a tremendous opportunity to push for action. The next few weeks, as the WTO works on its new plan, are critical. The plan is to send messages--thousands of them--to our countries' trade ministers, urging a strong decision by the WTO to change the rules that underly the unfair and unsustainable fishing trade.

Experts say that 29% of commercial fisheries might already be beyond repair. But most of the world's marine ecosystems can recover, if we get our policies right. The very fact that so few people are paying attention to this issue means that our actions will have more power. Please click here to contact your trade minister now:

The fishing crisis is an example of where our global economic system doesn't work--not for people, and not for the earth. But by joining together to fix it, we can create an example of how global democracy should work: human beings, rich and poor, taking action to renew a world full of life. That's what Avaaz is all about.

Raise your voice and spread the word.

With hope,

Ben, Graziela, Ricken, Paul, Iain, and the rest of the Avaaz team

Gathering Draws Hundreds Hungry For UFO Evidence

August 11, 2007

Motto Is To 'Lift The Lid On UFO Secrecy'

(CBS4) DENVER If you tell a group of people you believe in UFOs you might get some funny looks, but not at a gathering at the Marriott Denver Tech Center this weekend.

More than 500 people are in the city for the annual International UFO Symposium, hosted by the Mutual UFO Network. The motto of the event is "lifting the lid on UFO secrecy."

UFO investigators, or UFOlogists, say they're not prone to believe every flying saucer story they hear. Still, they say the photos and reported sightings are hard to ignore: they could possibly be secret military inventions or alien visitors.

Investigator Sam Maranto told CBS4 at the symposium that he's had six personal UFO encounters.

"I'm more than convinced," Maranto said. "I've had my own sightings. There is something going on. What exactly, specifically? I can't say."

Kathleen Marden's aunt and uncle, Betty and Barney Hill, said they were abducted by aliens in 1961. Marden studied hypnosis tapes of their story and became convinced.

"There was that 'Aha!' moment," Marden said.

James Carrion, the president of the 2,500 member Mutual UFO Network, says he has studied the evidence surrounding the possibility of UFOs with scientific skepticism.

"(I) went to the body of evidence and thought, 'Whoa!' There is absolutely something here. This is a real phenomenon. We don't know what it is, but it's absolutely real."

Carrion's organization, nicknamed MUFON, investigates reports of UFOs from across the country. They say they get about 200 reports each month. Ten to 15 percent of those reports turn out to be something unidentifiable, he said.

"It would be much easier to think that we were really not being visited and that people were not really being abducted. It would make the earth a much easier place to deal with, but I thing the fact is we are being visited," Kathleen Marden said.

Richard Dolan, a historian and speaker at the conference, said he's seen hundreds of government documents that show "some serious stuff going down at nuclear missile bases."

Dolan says there's plenty of records that indicate mysterious objects have come in and disabled US nuclear missiles.

"When you have a government telling you over and over that there's nothing going on, some people are predisposed to believe that. Others are not so predisposed to believe."

Subject: SOY -- Buyer Beware

Dear Reader,

Got Soy? You bet you do. Check some labels in your kitchen cabinet. Unless you go out of your way to avoid soy products you'll find soybean oil, soy lecithin, soy flour, and soy protein isolate hidden in all kinds of processed foods - sausage, bread, candy, cereal.a full list could easily fill this entire e-Alert.

But are any of these products actually good for you? An HSI member named John writes: "Have heard conflicting reports on soy - ONLY fermented versions Miso, Tempeh, Natto are beneficial or ALL soy based food products are helpful (I would think if the latter is true only Organic based soy products would qualify)."

When it comes to soy, don't expect to find much in the way of organic. Most of the soy produced in the U.S. is grown by agri-business giants like Archer Daniels Midland and Monsanto. And well over half of the soy produced in the U.S. is also genetically modified. But John is on the right track with "fermented versions."

When it comes to soy, fermented is the only way to go.

Every last word

Dark, fermented soy sauce may offer more antioxidant protection than red wine or vitamin C. In fact, the antioxidants in vitamin C may be far less potent than the antioxidants in soy sauce.

Those are the surprising results of a study from researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The NUS team also reports that blood flow might improve by about 50 percent for a few hours immediately following the consumption of fermented soy sauce.

In a Reuters report about the study, NUS researcher Barry Halliwell noted that that soy sauce has a preventive aspect that could, "slow down the rate of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases."

Sounds pretty impressive. And you can imagine that those who read the Reuters report might be inclined to up their consumption of soy sauce. But if they do, I hope they didn't miss one very important word: fermented.

Here's HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., on the issue of soy fermentation: "I am not a fan of today's soy for a large list of reasons (even though the stuff is commonly labeled a 'health food'). The phytates on board block absorption of more than just minerals (proteins are also involved), and are only deactivated with soy that's been fermented. Tofu, textured soy protein and most other forms are anything but. Tempeh, miso, soy sauce made by the traditional method (most in the U.S. is not), and a few other forms are the only ones that qualify, and we don't see them much around here."

Hard facts

The Reuters report on the NUS study states: "Soy sauce (US) or soya sauce is a fermented sauce made from soybeans (soya beans), roasted grain, water and salt." Unfortunately, that comment might lead many readers to believe that the soy sauce at their local grocery is the same soy sauce described by NUS researchers. But in most cases it's not. Not even close.

In a groundbreaking article about soy titled "The Ploy of Soy," Sally Fallon and Mary G Enig, Ph.D., of the Weston A. Price Foundation (a pro-raw dairy group), put the nutritional realities of soy consumption into perspective - a perspective you won't find anywhere in the mainstream. Here are a few of the key points they make:

· Soybeans contain "antinutrients" that inhibit enzymes needed for protein digestion and amino acid uptake

· Soybeans contain hemaglutinin, a substance that promotes the clotting of red blood cells

· Soybean hemaglutinin and enzyme inhibitors are deactivated during the fermentation process

· Enzyme inhibitors are reduced in bean curd and tofu, but not completely eliminated

· Soybeans are high in phytic acid; an organic acid that impedes the absorption of four key minerals: calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc

· The phytic acid content of soybeans can only be reduced by a long fermentation period

· When vegetarians substitute dairy products and meat with bean curd and tofu, they may risk mineral deficiencies

· Fermented soy products - such as miso and tempeh - provide nutrients that are easily absorbed

Soy intake may also increase kidney stone risk. A 2001 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, showed how soybeans, tofu, and commercially processed soy products - especially textured soy protein - contain extremely high levels of oxalate, a compound that binds with calcium in the kidneys, increasing the risk of kidney stone development.

It can't be said often enough: Soy is not health food. For more eye-opening details about soy, you can read "The Ploy of Soy" on the Weston A. Price web site:

US food aid is 'wrecking' Africa, claims charity

By Leonard Doyle in Washington

17 August 2007

Critics of US food aid subsidies say they help cause obesity among Americans and starvation among Africans.

Now Care, one of the world's biggest charities, has announced that it will boycott the controversial policy of selling tons of heavily subsidised US produced food in African countries. Care wants the US government to send money to buy food locally, rather than unwanted US produced food.

The US arm of the charity says America is causing rather than reducing hunger with a decree that US food aid must be sold rather than directly distributed to those facing starvation. In America, the subsidies for corn in particular, help underpin the junk food industry, which uses corn extracts as a sweetener, creating a home-grown a health crisis.

The farm lobby meanwhile has a stranglehold on Congress, which has balked at making any changes that would interfere with a system that promotes overproduction of commodities.

Critics of the policy say it also undermines African farmers' ability to produce food, making the most vulnerable countries of the world even more dependent on aid to avert famine.

Under the system Washington buys tens of millions of dollars of surplus corn and other products from agribusiness. The food, which can only be exported on US flagged ships, is then sold by charities to raise money to pay for emergencies.

Globally, about 800 million are chronically hungry and the number is rising every year. US farmers love the present system, but it is slow and unresponsive when there are food emergencies.

Care has caused a huge upset in the American charitable sector by deciding to phase out the practice. It has also upset US agribusiness and shipping interests, which benefit to the tune of some $180m a year from the practice.

Attempts to get Congress to end the policy, as it debates a new farm bill that will last for the next five years, have failed.

Alina Labrada, a spokeswoman for Care said: "I don't think that Americans who generously donate want people to go hungry at their expense."

Care's decision has led to a rift with some of the biggest US charities, including World Vision, Feed the Children and Africare, who rely on the system to fund a large part of their budgets. They argue that it keeps hard currency in impoverished countries and stops food prices rising.

The US claims to be the world's most generous provider of food aid, giving $2bn annually. Much of that aid lost in the overheads of shipping it to Africa.

Not only does subsidised US food hurt African farmers, but food purchased in the US regularly takes four months to reach the destination where there is an emergency. In contrast food bought locally takes only days to arrive.
