Defeating the U.S. War Plans Series #23: Déjà vu!

Hello everysoul!

In 2002 and 2003 I ran a whole series of compilations under the title "Defeating the U.S. War Plans Series". Now in view of the possible imminent attack against Iran, scheduled for next Friday April 6, according to Russian Intelligence reports, I've decided to revive this series. Better later than never!... You'll find much on this topic below. But first here is something powerfully disturbing that was brought to my attention a couple days ago...

Iraq Veteran Speaks Out On War Crimes - Operation Iraqi Slaughter! MUST SEE (21 min 33 sec)

CORRECTION: A few hours after recommending this video above I received the following from Bruno Parent (

Although many atrocities have been and are still being committed in Iraq, it appears that the video testimony of so-called "Iraq veteran" Jesse Macbeth is fraudulent. According to The video repeatedly referenced Iraq Veterans Against the War, though the organization later stated that the use of its name was unauthorized. It was removed from the site May 23, 2006 after Army spokesman John Boyce said Macbeth had never been an Army Ranger. (...) PepperSpray Productions has since issued a retraction statement, noting "when we learned that Macbeth's service records were fraudulent, we immediately pulled the video and are no longer distributing it."

"The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations."

— David Friedman

"At a time when we are celebrating our enlightened abolition of slavery 200 years ago, we are continuing to commit one of the worst international abuses of human rights of the past half-century. It is inexplicable how we allowed this to happen. It is inexplicable why we are not demanding this government's mass resignation. Two hundred years from now, the Iraq war will be mourned as the moment when Britain violated its delicate democratic constitution and joined the ranks of nations that use extreme pre-emptive killing as a tactic of foreign policy. Some anniversary that will be."

— Richard Horton -- Taken from A monstrous war crime -- With more than 650,000 civilians dead in Iraq, our government must take responsibility for its lies...

"Reports from Soviet intelligence say that the United States plans to bomb Iran on April 6th, less than ten days from now. Was the information purposely released to give the Iranian government one more chance to drop the program? Was it released by the Soviets to alert the world? Is it a bluff? We don't know. We do know that this Administration is in deep trouble and has demonstrated that it will do anything -- anything -- to promote its own survival. An escalation of the state of war could empower them to declare a martial law state of "emergency." It would be risky for them, but then again their ass is just about grass anyway."

— Steve Bhaerman ( taken from "Mutually Assured Survival Or Mutually Assured Destruction? The Jewry is Still Out" below

"Last week, Avaaz campaigners hand-delivered our 100,000-signature climate change petition to the environment ministers of the world's most polluting countries. It worked. The chair of the meeting waved the petition in the air, calling on his fellow ministers to act--and they agreed that climate change would be the #1 issue at the G8 summit in June."

"I went to see The Last Mimzy this weekend, and was blown away by this film. It is so clearly about Star Kids and their amazing advanced abilities. Even though the movie trailer did not play up the Star Visitor angle in the acquiring of these advanced abilities, the movie sets that out from the beginning. The "fictional" story line turns the Star Visitors into Humans from a distant future. But Star Kids everywhere will recognize themselves in the young Star Kid siblings Noah and Emma. My appraisal of his wonderful, charming, and important movie is: Every Star Kid, kid who suspects you may be a Star Kid, parent or grandparent of a Star Kid, or person who wants to see the near-and-present future of the Human race, get to a theatre as soon as possible, and don't miss The Last Mimzy!"

O'Donnell 9/11 Rant Reaches 30 Million Viewers (March 29, 2007)
Promises to feature physics professor on The View to discuss WTC collapse - Rosie O'Donnell is certainly not backing away from her public stance about 9/11, and this morning on The View went on a 9 minute rant about the many questions surrounding the attack, reaching around 30 million viewers in the process. This is the largest single exposure 9/11 truth has enjoyed to date and it represents a watershed moment in the quest to bring the truth to the masses. O'Donnell and her co-panelists debate the situation concerning Iran's seizure of the British marines before O'Donnell states, "Historically, have governments ever faked incidents or incited incidents in order to get them into wars?" The discussion then moves on to the level of trust one can place in the Bush administration before O'Donnell asks, "What do you have to do to get an impeachment in this country?" The debate moves on to the "propaganda of the war on terror," with O'Donnell stating, "In America we are fed propaganda and if you want to know what's happening in the world go outside of the U.S. media because it's owned by four corporations, one of them is this one (ABC)." "Go outside of the country to find out what's going on in our own country because it's frightening." "I think Democracy is threatened in a way it hasn't been in 200 years and if America doesn't stand up we're in big trouble," says O'Donnell. CLIPs

(...) As for documentaries that address reality, a wiser and more mature approach, from my perspective, is that of Tim Bennett’s and Sally Erickson’s DVD “What A Way To Go: Life At The End Of Empire” about which I wrote an extensive article earlier this month. Rather than offer a sibling soporific, this documentary addresses head-on the nightmare that humans have created on so many levels, especially on the level of making the planet uninhabitable, but rather than inviting the viewer to escape into isolated, self-absorbed consumerism on steroids, it presents the opportunity to join with others of like mind and heart to reverse the lethal trajectory on which the human race is spinning out of control. Just as the last thing we need at this moment in history in the face of fossil fuel depletion is a “solution” that involves consuming more oil, the last thing the human race needs in the face of the perfect economic storm is an indulgent “I can have anything I want” perspective that ignores the empire’s evils and perpetuates the very mega-consumerism that is annihilating the planet.

Help the FDA Ban the Use of Cloned Food
The FDA has completed its review of food from animal clones, and FDA regulators say that the agency will likely approve the sale of cloned foods this year. The FDA's action flies in the face of widespread scientific concern about the risks of food from clones, and ignores the animal cruelty and troubling ethical concerns that the cloning process brings. What's worse, the FDA indicates that it will not require labeling on cloned food, so consumers will have no way to avoid these experimental foods. The FDA needs to hear from all Americans who don't want food from animal clones -- and a public comment period is open until April 2, 2007. CLIP

JFKII - The Bush Connection - Complete Documentary (1 hr 27 min.)
JFK2 - The sequel to Oliver Stone's JFK, you won't see in the cinema. A thoroughly documented criminal indictment establishing beyond a reasonable doubt the guilt of George HW Bush as a supervisor in the conspiracy to assassinate John Kennedy. The evidence relies primarily on governement documents and public records. The center piece of the evidence is a memo entitled "Assassination of President John F. Kennedy", signed by J Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI, 5 days after the assassination, which names Bush as a supervisor of CIA-trained assassins. Another FBI memo establishes Bush's presence in the Dallas area at the time of the assassination. These memos are corroborated extensively with details from Bush's own official history of his life (also known as JFK 2 Part 1).

Deaths In Iraq Have Reached 1 Million: Grim claim on fourth anniversary of conflict (03/22/07)
THE number of deaths in Iraq since the start of the conflict could be as high as one million, it was claimed yesterday. On the fourth anniversary of the invasion by Allied troops, an Australian scientist insisted the true death toll dwarfed previous estimates. Dr Gideon Polya said: "Using the most comprehensive and authoritative literature and UN demographic data yields an estimate of one million post-invasion excess deaths in Iraq." His figure is far higher than the biggest previous estimate of 655,000. A spokesman for the Stop The War Coalition said the figure was "astonishing", adding: "Four years after the start of the conflict in Iraq, we can now see what a disaster the war has been. "Everything we predicted would happen has taken place, but it has been far worse than we feared."Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has hit back at Hans Blix. The former UN chief weapons inspector had claimed that, aside from Saddam Hussein's fall, everything in Iraq since the invasion had been a disaster. CLIP

General McCaffrey Says US Military in "Strategic Peril"
An influential retired Army general released a dire assessment of the situation in Iraq, based on a recent round of meetings there with Gen. David H. Petraeus, and 16 other senior US commanders. "The population is in despair," retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey wrote in an eight-page document compiled in his capacity as a professor at West Point. "Life in many of the urban areas is now desperate." McCaffrey says that the US military is in "strategic peril."

GAO Faults US Military Over Munitions in Iraq
The US military's faulty war plans and insufficient troops in Iraq left thousands - possibly millions - of tons of conventional munitions unsecured or in the hands of insurgent groups after the 2003 invasion, allowing widespread looting of weapons and explosives used to make roadside bombs that cause the bulk of US casualties, according to a government report released yesterday.

Pakistan's $4.2 Billion "Blank Check" for US Military Aid
In the three years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, US military aid to Pakistan soared to $4.2 billion, compared to $9.1 million in the three years before the attacks - a 45,000 percent increase - boosting Pakistan to the top tier of countries receiving this type of funding. More than half of the new money was provided through a post-9/11 Defense Department program - Coalition Support Funds - not closely tracked by Congress.

Arab leaders urge Israel, world to take peace offer (March 29, 2007)
RIYADH (Reuters) - Arab leaders urged Israel and the world on Thursday to take up a 5-year-old peace plan to end the conflict with Israel, and the Palestinian president warned of more violence if the "hand of peace" was rejected. The endorsement at a two-day Arab summit came amid a U.S. push to restart the Middle East peace process, and Washington welcomed the endorsement as "very positive", but Israel stopped short of welcoming the plan it rejected in 2002.Speaking at the end of the summit in Riyadh, Mahmoud Abbas urged Israel not to waste the chance for peace, saying the region would be face the threat of more war without a solution. "I reiterate the sincerity of the Palestinian will in extending the hand of peace to the Israeli people ... We should not waste more chances in the history of this long and painful cause," the Palestinian president told the closing ceremony. The plan offers Israel normal ties with Arab states in return for withdrawal from land seized in the 1967 war and the creation of a Palestinian state.Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres said on Thursday that Arabs and Israel should have direct talks on peace rather than setting pre-conditions."It is time now to start negotiating and not only to make announcements," he told Al Jazeera television. I came home wondering whether some Bush-era version of the old Roman formula had indeed been working. Had bread and circuses become croissants and iPods, or Bud and American Idol, or Sony PlayStation 3 and 24?"

U.S. general visits China in wake of concerns over defense spending, anti-satellite test (March 22, 2007)
BEIJING: The Pentagon's top general arrived in Beijing Thursday on a visit that follows recent U.S. concerns over China's booming defense spending and the successful test of an anti-satellite weapon. In his first visit to China as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Gen. Peter Pace went directly into meetings with Defense Minister Gen. Cao Gangchuan and other top leaders of China's 2.3 million-member armed forces. His four-day visit also includes a seminar at the Military Science Academy, visits to military installations and meetings with regional military leaders in the northern city of Shenyang and Nanjing in the east.China earlier this month announced a 17.8 percent annual rise in defense spending to about US$45 billion (¤34 billion), prompting calls from Washington and Tokyo for Beijing to show greater transparency about its military aims. The funding jump was the highest since 1995, although experts believe real Chinese defense spending may be much higher. January's test, in which a Chinese missile warhead blew a defunct Chinese weather satellite apart, was also strongly criticized. U.S. officials said it called into question China's self-proclaimed opposition to the weaponization of outer space. However, in a news conference Wednesday, Pace said he did not regard China as a threat and hoped to further rebuild military ties that have languished since an in-air collision between a U.S. spy plane and a Chinese jet fighter over the South China Sea in 2001. He said he would urge additional joint search-and-rescue exercises and expand contacts between officers, including having junior officers from China and the U.S. attend courses together."When you get to know each other and know how each other thinks, you build trust and confidence," Pace told reporters in Japan, a close U.S. ally where he began his regional tour. "I'm looking for ways to respect China as a nation that deserves respect." CLIP

Mugabe: the final showdown looms (March 25, 2007)
POLITICIANS inside and outside Zimbabwe are scrambling to find an exit strategy for President Robert Mugabe amid warnings that the country is on the brink of widespread famine. The government admitted last week that two-thirds of its maize crop — the country’s staple food — has been wiped out by drought. But many fear that the brutality of the past two weeks against opposition activists is distracting international attention from a bigger catastrophe.“We have the world’s greatest humanitarian crisis on our hands,” said David Coltart, an MP from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). “We already have the world’s lowest life expectancy and highest inflation; imagine on top of that drought? There will be famine.”The warning comes as Mugabe faces unprecedented international condemnation — including criticism from other African leaders for the first time — and opposition within his ruling party, which will meet this week to decide his future. (...) Zimbabwe was once the breadbasket of southern Africa, but this will be the sixth consecutive year of food shortages since Mugabe launched his violent programme of seizing white-owned farms. The World Food Programme is giving food aid to 1.5m people, nearly 10% of the population.Authorities have consistently attributed the low yields to drought. But critics blame the farm seizures for the sharp decline in agricultural production. Just 100 to 200 white farmers are left on their farms, compared with 4,000 in 2000. Most farms are now in the hands of “cellphone” farmers, ruling party cronies who coveted the farmhouses for weekend getaways and have no real interest in farming. But this year there is no doubt that southern Zimbabwe has suffered a severe drought. The state television ZBC quoted Rugare Gumbo, the agriculture minister, as admitting that crops in many areas had failed. “The dry spell experienced this season has badly impacted on agriculture. Crops, especially maize, in most parts of the country are a write-off,” he said. He expected a maize harvest of just 600,000 tons — only one third of the minimum annual requirements, and declared 2007 a drought year. With most Zimbabweans already struggling to find one meal a day, aid workers say food shortages will push many over the edge, particularly its 1.6m Aids orphans. (...) He conceded that most Zimbabweans may still be too fearful and weakened by hunger and disease to act, but suggested that desperation could force their hand.“I believe the regime is already a paper tiger,” he said. “The question is when people realise that, because at that moment Mugabe is in real trouble.” Pointing out that police salaries were way below poverty level, he explained: “Three years ago when I was stopped at roadblocks I was treated with hostility. Now when I’m stopped, 90% of the time the police ask me when things are going to change.”But whether regime change comes through street agitation or political negotiations, the problem remains of what to do with Mugabe. Not only does the 83-year-old president show no sign of wanting to retire but he has so much blood on his hands that he would be fearful of being put before a UN war crimes tribunal. (...) The Zimbabwean government is planning to construct a grandiose monument to Robert Mugabe, commemorating his life and achievements, writes Christina Lamb. The monument is to be built in his home town of Zvimba and is expected to include a statue. (...) Building a statue, while the country is in an economic crisis so severe that hospitals have no drugs and the government had to stop issuing passports because it could not afford the ink, is likely to provoke an outcry. The site chosen is the size of a football pitch and there have been reports of nearly £200,000 being made available to buy materials from Asia.
COMMENT: "It's actually quite sick and twisted that the rest of the world has stood by and let Mugabe run rampant for so long. You can bet if there was oil involved, he'd have been out long ago. How and why is this allowed to happen? Are we all so busy with our problems in the rest of the world? Do we not care for our fellow oppressed man? Given the extreme suffering of so many people, I think any and all options should be on the table for removing Mugabe and all his immediate henchmen. It is a shame his supporters are as crazy and blind to their countrymen's suffering as Mugabe is. How many more dictators is the world going to allow to kill huge numbers of people? Isn't it time we as a planet grew up and had some guts and came down on them like a ton of bricks early in their sociopathic careers?John Corry, London, UK -- Recommended by Dorothy Wakeling ( who wrote: "Hi Jean! Thank you for all the wonderful work you do. This is a pretty good summary of the state of affairs in Zimbabwe. Though inflation is around 6000%! There is a strange feeling in the air - quiet, expectant - we are in the meltdown just watching and waiting. Great lessons in non attachment but why is it necessary to learn this way?"

A Wind of Peace Rises Over Northern Ireland

Energy Production
(...) Halfway around the globe, the dirty little secret is that Saudi Arabia is in an accelerating decline in oil production output. Extend that to Kuwait and other neighbors. Closer to home, the dirty little secret is that Mexico is in an accelerating decline in oil production output. On home ground, the US Congress cannot shake the pristine environment as more important than economic survival and job preservation. In the middle ground, the dirty little secret is that the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Alaskan slope, Australia, Indonesia, and even mature pockets of Russia (see Samatlor) are in accelerating decline in oil production output.... The biggest untold story in the energy world in my opinion is the rapid decline in Mexico at their Cantarell elephant oil field. My February and March Hat Trick Letter reports cover the story, with full details, facts & figures. Cantarell oil production declined by 13.5% in 2006, and on track to decline by 15% additionally this year? Will the Mexican Govt suffer massive deficits soon? Will their Parliament and PEMEX labor unions obstruct ALL possible reforms and construction actions? My conclusion is that political instability is soon to come to the southern border of the United States!!! All $97 billion in PEMEX oil sales in 2006 went to the Mexican Govt to account for 40% of its budget. The absurdly incompetent Mexican Govt (rivals Washington DC and USGovt) has seen fit to commandeer almost every penny of PEMEX oil income, denying much needed funds for investment in new exploration, new capacity, even crimping basic maintenance. The press is on the story in Mexico City, but not so much in the sleepy US, where reality shows and the latest missing persons and porous borders and murder trials dominate, the latest on obesity & diabetes, if not gay marriage. PEMEX is the second biggest supplier of oil to the US Economy. Experts now forecast that by 2010, Mexico will be on the verge of becoming an oil importer. Unlike the Saudi story, shrouded in state secrecy, the Mexican disaster is in plain view, with no debate. In fact, there has been no recognition even though the facts are laid bare for all to see.

France opens up its UFO files (22 March 2007)
France became the first country to open its files on UFOs on Thursday when the national space agency unveiled a website documenting more than 1600 sightings spanning five decades. The online archives, which will be updated as new cases are reported, catalogues in minute detail cases ranging from the easily dismissed to a handful that continue to perplex even hard-nosed scientists."It is a world first," says Jacques Patenet, the aeronautical engineer who heads the office for the study of "non-identified aerospatial phenomena."Known as OVNIs in French, UFOs have always generated intense interest along with countless conspiracy theories about secretive government cover-ups of findings deemed too sensitive or alarming for public consumption. (...) Other countries, notably Britain and the US, collect data more or less systematically about unidentified flying objects. In the US, information can be requested on a case-by-case basis under the Freedom of Information Act."But we decided to do it the other way around and made everything available to the public," Patenet says. The aim was to make it easier for scientists and other UFO buffs to access the data for research. The website itself (– which crashed host servers hours after it was unveiled due to heavy traffic – is extremely well organised and complete, even including scanned copies of police reports.

Global Warming Disaster as Thousands of Harp Seal Pups Perish
Thousands of harp seal pups are assumed dead in Canada's Gulf of St. Lawrence due to the lack of ice floes, which mother seals require to give birth and nurse their pups successfully. They report that the Gulf of St. Lawrence, which is the annual birthing ground of hundreds of thousands of harp seals, is essentially devoid of both ice and seals.

Stiill Waters: The Global Fish Crisis
The Mediterranean may lose its wild bluefin tuna. High-tech harvesting and wasteful management have brought world fish stocks to dangerous lows. This story explores the fish crisis—as well as the hope for a new relationship between man and the sea. (...) The decimation of giant bluefin is emblematic of everything wrong with global fisheries today: the vastly increased killing power of new fishing technology, the shadowy network of international companies making huge profits from the trade, negligent fisheries management and enforcement, and consumers' indifference to the fate of the fish they choose to buy. The world's oceans are a shadow of what they once were. With a few notable exceptions, such as well-managed fisheries in Alaska, Iceland, and New Zealand, the number of fish swimming the seas is a fraction of what it was a century ago. Marine biologists differ on the extent of the decline. Some argue that stocks of many large oceangoing fish have fallen by 80 to 90 percent, while others say the declines have been less steep. But all agree that, in most places, too many boats are chasing too few fish. (...) Cruel" may seem a harsh indictment of the age-old profession of fishing—and certainly does not apply to all who practice the trade—but how else to portray the world's shark fishermen, who kill tens of millions of sharks a year, large numbers finned alive for shark-fin soup and allowed to sink to the bottom to die? How else to characterize the incalculable number of fish and other sea creatures scooped up in nets, allowed to suffocate, and dumped overboard as useless bycatch? Or the longline fisheries, whose miles and miles of baited hooks attract—and drown—creatures such as the loggerhead turtle and wandering albatross? (...) How can this endless cycle of overfishing be stopped? How can the world's fleets be prevented from committing ecological and economic suicide by depleting the oceans of bluefin tuna, shark, cod, haddock, sea bass, hake, red snapper, orange roughy, grouper, grenadier, sturgeon, plaice, rockfish, skate, and other species? Experts agree that, first, the world's oceans must be managed as ecosystems, not simply as larders from which the fishing industry can extract protein at will. Second, the management councils that oversee fisheries, such as ICCAT, long dominated by commercial fishing interests, must share power with scientists and conservationists. Further, governments must cut back the world's four million fishing vessels—nearly double what is needed to fish the ocean sustainably—and slash the estimated 25 billion dollars in government subsidies bestowed annually on the fishing industry. In addition, fisheries agencies will have to set tough quotas and enforce them. CLIP

Coastal Mega-Cities In for a Bumpy Ride

Report Charges Broad White House Efforts to Stifle Climate Research
Bush administration officials throughout the government have engaged in White House-directed efforts to stifle, delay or dampen the release of climate change research that casts the White House or its policies in a bad light, says a new report that purports to be the most comprehensive assessment to date of the subject.

Global Warming Can't Buy Happiness
Bill McKibben discusses an alarming White House report that was leaked to reporters earlier this month. "The report, a year overdue to the United Nations, said that the United States would be producing almost 20 percent more greenhouse gases in 2020 than it had in 2000, and that our contribution to global warming would be going steadily up, not sharply and steadily down, as scientists have made clear it must," McKibben continues.

Mercury in Energy-Saving Bulbs Worries Scientists
With an estimated 150 million CFLs sold in the United States in 2006 and with Wal-Mart alone hoping to sell 100 million this year, some scientists and environmentalists are worried that most are ending up in garbage dumps. Because CFLs require less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs, they reduce overall mercury in the atmosphere by cutting emissions from coal-fired power plants, but they must be disposed of properly.

Are GM Crops Killing Bees? (22 March 2007)
A mysterious decimation of bee populations has German beekeepers worried, while a similar phenomenon in the United States is gradually assuming catastrophic proportions. The consequences for agriculture and the economy could be enormous. (...) As far back as 2005, Haefeker ended an article he contributed to the journal Der Kritischer Agrarbericht (Critical Agricultural Report) with an Albert Einstein quote: "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man." Mysterious events in recent months have suddenly made Einstein's apocalyptic vision seem all the more topical. For unknown reasons, bee populations throughout Germany are disappearing - something that is so far only harming beekeepers. But the situation is different in the United States, where bees are dying in such dramatic numbers that the economic consequences could soon be dire. No one knows what is causing the bees to perish, but some experts believe that the large-scale use of genetically modified plants in the US could be a factor.Since last November, the US has seen a decline in bee populations so dramatic that it eclipses all previous incidences of mass mortality. Beekeepers on the east coast of the United States complain that they have lost more than 70 percent of their stock since late last year, while the west coast has seen a decline of up to 60 percent. In an article in its business section in late February, the New York Times calculated the damage US agriculture would suffer if bees died out. Experts at Cornell University in upstate New York have estimated the value bees generate - by pollinating fruit and vegetable plants, almond trees and animal feed like clover - at more than $14 billion. (...) One thing is certain: Millions of bees have simply vanished. In most cases, all that's left in the hives are the doomed offspring. But dead bees are nowhere to be found - neither in nor anywhere close to the hives. Diana Cox-Foster, a member of the CCD Working Group, told The Independent that researchers were "extremely alarmed," adding that the crisis "has the potential to devastate the US beekeeping industry." It is particularly worrisome, she said, that the bees' death is accompanied by a set of symptoms "which does not seem to match anything in the literature." In many cases, scientists have found evidence of almost all known bee viruses in the few surviving bees found in the hives after most have disappeared. Some had five or six infections at the same time and were infested with fungi - a sign, experts say, that the insects' immune system may have collapsed. The scientists are also surprised that bees and other insects usually leave the abandoned hives untouched. Nearby bee populations or parasites would normally raid the honey and pollen stores of colonies that have died for other reasons, such as excessive winter cold. "This suggests that there is something toxic in the colony itself which is repelling them," says Cox-Foster. (...) According to Hans-Hinrich Kaatz, a professor at the University of Halle in eastern Germany and the director of the study, the bacterial toxin in the genetically modified corn may have "altered the surface of the bee's intestines, sufficiently weakening the bees to allow the parasites to gain entry - or perhaps it was the other way around. We don't know." CLIP

World's Most Important Crops Hit by Global Warming Effects (19 March 2007)
Global warming over the past quarter century has led to a fall in the yield of some of the most important food crops in the world, according to one of the first scientific studies of how climate change has affected cereal crops. Rising temperatures between 1981 and 2002 caused a loss in production of wheat, corn and barley that amounted in effect to some 40 million tons a year - equivalent to annual losses of some £2.6bn.(...) The study revealed a simple relationship between temperature and crop yields, with a fall of between 3 and 5 per cent for every 0.5C increase in average temperatures, the scientists said.

Feeding Nine Billion Earthlings
Will the planet be able to supply enough to eat to the nine billion humans it will carry in 2050? Agronomists worldwide are asking themselves this question. All the more cautiously given that today, of the 6.5 billion people living on Earth, 2 billion are malnourished and 854 million are "starving" on less than 2,200 calories a day.

RFID and the End of Privacy
Imagine a world where everything is fitted with an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) spychip, containing a unique ID for each product to differentiate it from others, and allowing it to be tracked in real time. It sounds far-fetched, but that is exactly what RFID companies like Accenture and the Auto-ID labs at MIT have been trying to do since 1999.

Jean, since this is to be a global event would you consider including it in your e-mail newsletter? Thanks so much.

Hi Everyone,

I was very moved by this story. The link says it all - very simple. The stories below share how this simple act is moving across the nation.

Some are creating gatherings that last 5 minutes, others 2 hours. Please send this on to everyone in your mail list!

"We can do no great things, only small things with great love."

— Mother Teresa

Love you all,

Dear friends of The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering,

Something amazing is happening!!! Here's what I know from a few of the emails I've received in the past week:

1. Deb Ballam, Associate Provost for Women's Policy Initiatives at Ohio State University and a group of women from Columbus, Ohio were so inspired by The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering they created a website (translated into 15 languages!), a YouTube video, and 20,000 postcards and are blanketing the globe -- literally! -- with a message asking women and men to stand in their local parks at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 13th -- Mother's Day. See

2. Teena Booth, a television screenwriter who works in Hollywood and lives in Arizona had the same idea at the same time and created a website inspired by the Grandmother story, asking people to stand at 1 o'clock on Mother's Day. (I swear I had nothing to do with this!) Please see her most compelling website at

3. Linda Merryman, a convener of the Millionth Circle Initiative inspired by Jean Shinoda Bolen's book, linked up the two women and made sure news of the Mother's Day event made it onto the Millionth Circle website. Linda emailed this morning to say already she's gotten word Millionth Circle will host a Gather The Women of South Florida Mother's Day event. (See Linda's poignant letter about standing in Ashland to help save the world at and

4. Justine Willis Toms, co-founder and co-president of New Dimensions World Broadcasting, whose weekly in-depth interviews are heard on National Public Radio, will announce Deb and Teena's events in the March New Dimensions Newsletter and will call for people to stand at 1 o'clock on Mother's Day (

5. A woman from British Columbia who was representative to the 5th Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the United Nations and is part of a grassroots grandmothers-to-grandmothers campaign to help women in Africa, wrote to say she and a woman from India are organizing a Great Silent Grandmother Gathering on the steps of the Parliament Building in Victoria, B.C.

Please forward this email to your friends and groups. And please consider standing, if only for a few minutes, at 1 o'clock on Mother's Day, May 13, 2007. Maybe, just maybe, this spontaneous wave of heartfelt intentions will be the tipping point.

With love and hope,

Sharon Mehdi

The women of Ohio call upon the women of the world, from the day-old babies to our most senior elders, to stand with us to save the world.

Sharon Mehdi wrote a wonderful short story for her five-year old granddaughter, The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering that has inspired us. A quick summary of the story is:

A busboy who worked in a café whose window faced the public park noticed that two grandmotherly looking women had been standing in the park all day without moving at all and without talking. They were dressed up in their Sunday best and were just staring at the town hall. He asked the other patrons in the café what they thought the women were up to. They speculated on a variety of things. Then, a five-year old year who was in the café spoke up and said "One of them is my grandmother and I know what they are doing. They are standing there to save the world." All of the men in the café hooted and howled and laughed. On his way home the busboy decided to ask the women what they were doing and sure enough their answer was "We are saving the world."

Over dinner that evening the busboy told his parents and he and his father hooted and howled, but his mother was totally silent. After dinner, the mother called her best friends to tell them.

The next morning the busboy looked out the café window and the two women were back, along with his mother, her friends, and the women who had been in the café the day before. All were standing in silence staring at the town hall. Again, the men hooted and howled and said things like "You can't save the world by standing in the park. That is what we have armies for," and "everyone knows you have to have banners and slogans to save the world--you can't do it by just standing in the park."

The next day the women were joined by the women who were in the café the day before and a number of their friends. This brought the local newspaper reporter to the scene. He wrote a derisive article about the women. The day after it appeared, hundreds of women showed up to stand in the park in silence. The mayor then told the police chief to make the women leave because they were making the town appear to be foolish. When the police chief told them they would have to disperse because they didn't have a permit, one of them responded that "we are just individuals standing in our public park and we are not giving speeches or having a demonstration so why would we need a permit." The police chief thought about this and agreed with them and left the park.

At this point 2,223 women including the mayor's wife, the police chief's wife, and one five-year old girl were standing in the park to save the world. The news quickly spread and soon women were standing all over the country. The story ended with women standing in every country throughout the globe, standing to save the world. See

Please stand with us for five minutes of silence at 1 p.m. your local time on May 13, 2007, in your local park, school yard, gathering place, or any place you deem appropriate, to signify your agreement with the statement below. We ask you to invite the men who you care about to join you. We ask that you bring bells to ring at 1 p.m. to signify the beginning of the five minutes of silence and to ring again to signify the end of the period of silence. During the silence, please think about what you individually and we collectively can do to attain this world. If you need to sit rather than stand, please feel free to do so. Afterwards, hopefully you and your loved ones can talk together about how we can bring about this world.

U.S. Capitol Miracle Continues

The Miracle of the peace sign appearing on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol continues. If you haven't heard the entire story, on Sunday, March 25, James Twyman focused a peace ceremony commemorating the Season For Non-Violence in Washington, DC. During the ceremony, which was held on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, the "Children's Cloth of Many Colors" (for more info on this amazing project please visit was laid gently on the grass in the form of a giant peace sign, and the ceremony took place in the center.

The next day the sponsor of the event, Gerry Eitner, received a concerned phone call from the U.S. Capitol Police saying that the grass where the cloth lie was now discolored, leaving an enormous peace sign on the lawn.

This morning the police department called back with more information. They believe that some type of fertilizer attached to the quilt caused the discoloration. In reality, however, there was nothing attached to the Children's Cloth except the prayers of those present at the ceremony, as well as thousands of people from around the world. Subsequent calls to professional lawn care companies indicated that there is currently nothing on the market that would cause such a sudden overnight change. In fact, witnesses reported that the "peace sign grass" is actually longer and greener than the rest of the lawn.

Has a miracle visited the U.S. Capitol? If so, then what is the message?

From James Twyman:

"I believe that this miracle was caused by two factors. First of all, there were hundreds of thousands of people focusing on the Capitol ceremony while it was taking place. At one point we actually held hands around the peace sign and called upon the energy of all those people from around the world, feeling their presence around the quilt with us. The intent of so many people can be a powerful energetic force and seems to have catalyzed a change in the actual earth causing the grass to grow greener and longer overnight. Second, I believe that in some way and for some reason the earth is literally giving us a sign. This is a critical point in the history of the world. If we don't begin turning our thoughts and actions toward peace, for both humanity and the environment, a deep crisis may be around the corner. For me the peace sign on the lawn of the US Capitol is both a warning and a symbol of hope. I'm hoping we'll listen and begin working for peace."

Photos of the grass as well as the peace ceremony will be online later today or tomorrow. PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD BY PASSING THIS EMAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE.

On May 21 5000 people will gather around the Old City of Jerusalem to literally hug the "City of Peace," sending their prayers of healing and unity to one of the most important places on earth. James will be
leading a tour of the Holy Land culminating in the "Jerusalem Hug." For more information on how you can join him go to

A Miracle at the U.S. Capitol?

By Gerry Eitner, founder, Communities of Peace Program.

Already they're comparing it to the Shroud of Turin; the tilma of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

War, peace, and children. Central issues, for sure. Two days ago, on the west lawn of the US Capitol, a children's peace quilt left an indelible image on the grass, after having been laid out for only 15 minutes in the peace symbol. The image on the grass is undeniably greener, appearing longer. Yesterday afternoon, the Capitol police called our organization as the permit holder, stating that we must have put fertilizer on the lawn, and asking for an explanation.

The talks at our event were of peace, not of opposition – to anything. “Peace Troubadour” James Twyman, visionary conceiver of the adult quilt from which this children's version was modeled, spoke of standing “ for peace, not against anything.” I spoke of the many times that I've seen God playing through the Children's Cloth of Many Colors since we began sponsoring it seven years ago. I believe that God is at work here.

War, peace, and children have been the underlying themes of The Children's Cloth of Many Colors since it was conceived and initiated at our event at the Pentagon, in September of 2000. We were dedicating a peace pole, inscribed “May Peace Prevail on Earth”, for the Pentagon Chapel. That pole still stands in the Pentagon today – symbol of all of our wishes for a peaceful world.

At that event, eight-year old Brynn Stalvey announced that she wanted her third grade to start a children's quilt that would contain their hopes, wishes, dreams, and, most importantly, their feelings – of what “peace on earth” will be like for them. The quilt is now a little more than 1/3 mile long, containing sections from thousands of children, from 25 countries and 22 US states, who have participated.

There's a purity to the quilt; a vulnerability and an innocence. It's the soft, powerful love of children that gives the quilt its amazing power of transformation. Personal miracles have happened around it before; now the ante seems to be escalating. Perhaps now the need is greater.

The initial section was presented by Brynn to Congressman Dennis Kucinich on July ll, 2001, when he first proposed a congressional resolution for a Department of Peace, to operate at a cabinet level. That section hung in his office for a few years, symbolic of the wishes of children for a peaceful world.

What is the message here? Could this latest event be a sign from God to somehow find a way to create a peaceful world for the children? And, could a Department of Peace help create that way?

Perhaps it is also about the fertilizing energy of love, and a suggestion that we all bring forward our own love to the process of creating a peaceful world.

NOTE: There is a picture of this amazing phenomenon at

and at

News of the MIRACLE ON CAPITOL HILL is spreading like wildfire around the world. Many people feel that this is a sign from Heaven, perhaps indicating the critical nature of the present age and the need for peace. There is still no physical explanation for the peace sign that appeared overnight on the west lawn of the US Capitol, the same spot where James Twyman and others conducted a ceremony of peace commemorating the Season for Non-Violence. "The Children's Cloth of Many Colors," a mile long quilt made by children from around the world to express their longing for peace, had rested on the spot the previous day, and the next morning the miraculous sign appeared.

It has also been suggested that this could be the beginning of a worldwide movement where peace signs are constructed in significant places to bring continued awareness to the issues of global non-violence. A website is being prepared to share these photos, either man-made or miraculous, so please let us know if any appear.

Subject: LET THE PEACE TALKS BEGIN... by Janet Kira Lessin

Dear Global Network:

In complete support of Janet Lessin's statements below , written initially to a colleague, promoting a song to our troops.

Loving the energy, intelligence and compassion behind Janet's words. I encourage her to stay on her pulpit.
Please share widely. This is a Spring 2007 gift from me to you.

Love & Blessings,

Wars are fabricated, generated by the Illuminati to keep the masses of humanity locked in the Matrix, in economic, corporate slavery. Only 3% own the wealth and power of the planet and in order to maintain the status quo, they who are in control have duped us into believing war is the answer. Meanwhile they get rich, control all the power and get their rocks off doing so. Love is the answer , not war. Loving oneness is our natural state of being. When you put people together, face to face, we feel our oneness, know that we are all good, all part of God, loveable.

I feel sorry for the soldiers for they've been duped into believing in the Matrix. We need new models, new paradigms to create peace, a civilized civilization. War is barbaric, so is violence, hatred. It's time we give up our toys of childhood, guns and images of "patriotism" which are nothing more than justification for violence, and move into a world that honors all life, all consciousness. Save the planet.. and us.

I hope you understand. I am motivated by divine love. I am tired of the programming, the statements that humans are violent, that's our nature. That's bullshit. I'm human and I am peace-loving. My friends are waking up, no longer supporting the war paradigm. My friends are peace-loving and yes, we respect the troops but will respect them more when they, like our brothers before in the Viet Nam war get it and stop participating in killing. They're killers, plain and simple. They're killing innocents, women, men, children. Most who die are innocent. Stop this senseless killing. STOP KILLING OUR CHILDREN.

War is the enemy of humankind. We can no longer rationalize it, justify any war.

The soldiers must lay down their weapons, return to their bases and demand passage home. War will end when we unilaterally lay down our arms and begin the peace talks. Let the peace talks begin. Let's talk and talk, and talk and talk till we find resolutions. Let's be adult. Civilized peoples find resolutions. Children fight. There are a billion ways to resolve ALL these issues.

OK, I'm jumping off my pulpit.

Love, Blessings, Warmest Aloha And PEACE BE WITH YOU AND YOURS,

Operation Bite: April 6 sneak attack by US forces against Iran planned, Russian military sources warn

By Webster G. Tarpley
Online Journal Contributing Write

March 26, 2007

The long awaited US military attack on Iran is now on track for the first week of April, specifically for 4 AM on April 6, the Good Friday opening of Easter weekend, writes the well-known Russian journalist Andrei Uglanov in the Moscow weekly “Argumenty Nedeli.” Uglanov cites Russian military experts close to the Russian General Staff for his account.

The attack is slated to last for twelve hours, according to Uglanov, lasting from 4 AM until 4 PM local time. Friday is a holiday in Iran. In the course of the attack, code named Operation Bite, about 20 targets are marked for bombing; the list includes uranium enrichment facilities, research centers, and laboratories.

The first reactor at the Bushehr nuclear plant, where Russian engineers are working, is supposed to be spared from destruction. The US attack plan reportedly calls for the Iranian air defense system to be degraded, for numerous Iranian warships to be sunk in the Persian Gulf, and the for the most important headquarters of the Iranian armed forces to be wiped out.

The attacks will be mounted from a number of bases, including the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Diego Garcia is currently home to B-52 bombers equipped with standoff missiles. Also participating in the air strikes will be US naval aviation from aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf, as well as from those of the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Additional cruise missiles will be fired from submarines in the Indian Ocean and off the coast of the Arabian peninsula. The goal is allegedly to set back Iran’s nuclear program by several years, writes Uglanov, whose article was re-issued by RIA-Novosti in various languages, but apparently not English, several days ago. The story is the top item on numerous Italian and German blogs, but so far appears to have been ignored by US websites.

Observers comment that this dispatch represents a high-level orchestrated leak from the Kremlin, in effect a war warning, which draws on the formidable resources of the Russian intelligence services, and which deserves to be taken with the utmost seriousness by pro-peace forces around the world.

Asked by RIA-Novosti to comment on the Uglanov report, retired Colonel General Leonid Ivashov confirmed its essential features in a March 21 interview: “I have no doubt that there will be an operation, or more precisely a violent action against Iran.” Ivashov, who has reportedly served at various times as an informal advisor to Putin, is currently the Vice President of the Moscow Academy for Geopolitical Sciences.

“We have drawn the unmistakable conclusion that this operation will take place,” said Ivashov. In his opinion, the US planning does not include a land operation: “ Most probably there will be no ground attack, but rather massive air attacks with the goal of annihilating Iran’s capacity for military resistance, the centers of administration, the key economic assets, and quite possibly the Iranian political leadership, or at least part of it,” he continued.

Ivashov noted that it was not to be excluded that the Pentagon would use smaller tactical nuclear weapons against targets of the Iranian nuclear industry. These attacks could paralyze everyday life, create panic in the population, and generally produce an atmosphere of chaos and uncertainty all over Iran, Ivashov told RIA-Novosti. “This will unleash a struggle for power inside Iran, and then there will be a peace delegation sent in to install a pro-American government in Teheran,” Ivashov continued. One of the US goals was, in his estimation, to burnish the image of the current Republican administration, who would now be able to boast that they had wiped out the Iranian nuclear program.

Among the other outcomes, General Ivashov pointed to a partition of Iran along the same lines as Iraq, and a subsequent carving up of the Near and Middle East into smaller regions. “This concept worked well for them in the Balkans and will now be applied to the greater Middle East,” he commented.

“Moscow must exert Russia’s influence by demanding an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to deal with the current preparations for an illegal use of force against Iran and the destruction of the basis of the United Nations Charter,” said General Ivashov. “In this context Russia could cooperate with China, France and the non-permanent members of the Security Council. We need this kind of preventive action to ward off the use of force,” he concluded.

According to RIA-Novosti, the imminent assault will target Iranian air and naval defense capabilities, armed forces headquarters as well as key economic assets and administration headquarters. His latest, "The Redirection," discusses US participation in Iran-based clandestine operations, the kidnapping of hundreds of Iranians (including many "humanitarian and aid workers") by US forces and the shocking revelation that an Iran-Contra-type scandal has been run out of Vice President Dick Cheney's office with some of the illicit funds going to groups "sympathetic to al-Qaeda.""The Redirection" also reports that the Pentagon has been planning to bomb Iran for a year and that a recently-established group connected to the Joint Chiefs of Staff is formulating a assault strategy to be implemented "upon orders from the President, within twenty-four hours." Hersh notes that current capabilities "allow for an attack order this spring," possibly when four US aircraft-carrier battle groups are scheduled to be in the Persian Gulf simultaneously.Meanwhile, the Democratic Congress busies itself with non-binding, timid resolutions on Iraq and recently altered a military-funding bill to make it easier for Bush to invade Iran. As Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV) explained, language demanding that Bush seek congressional approval before attacking Iran "would take away perhaps the most important negotiating tool that the U.S. has when it comes to Iran." Such sheer ignorance and blind denial would be laughable if it weren't marching us into Armageddon. CLIP

Fabricating the case against Iran (Feb 20, 2007)
The Bush administration will attack Iran as early as spring 2007. The administration is on total war footing. Over the next few months, the administration and its allies and functionaries will create and provoke a pretext that forces a political consensus behind an attack on Iran. Any or all of the following may occur: CLIP

Brinkmanship Unwise in Uncharted Waters By Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS)
There is real danger that this incident, and the way it plays out, may turn out to be outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair's last gesture of fealty to President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, and "neo-conservative" advisers who, this time, are looking for a casus belli to "justify" air strikes on Iran.

Musharraf warns of ‘ominous confrontation’ in Gulf (March 29, 2007)\03\29\story_29-3-2007_pg7_13
RIYADH: President General Pervez Musharraf warned on Wednesday that rising tensions in the oil-rich Gulf risk leading to a confrontation that could affect the entire world. “Tensions in the Gulf region are shaping an ominous confrontation that could have incalculable consequences globally, regionally and among the Muslim Umma,” Gen Musharraf told an Arab League summit in Riyadh in a reference to Iran’s standoff with the West over its controversial nuclear programme. “We cannot remain helpless spectators in this and other crises and conflicts afflicting the Islamic world,” said Musharraf, one of several world figures invited to the summit’s opening session. “We need to join hands to work for solutions on the basis of fairness, justice and realism.”

Iran - How To Start A War By Gwynne Dyer
Any day now, a minor clash along Iraq's land or sea frontier with Iran could kill some American troops and give President Bush an excuse to attack Iran, if he wants one - and he certainly seems to.

Why George Bush is Insane By Harold Pinter
The US is at this moment developing advanced systems of "weapons of mass destruction" and it prepared to use them where it sees fit. It has more of them than the rest of the world put together. It has walked away from international agreements on biological and chemical weapons, refusing to allow inspection of its own factories. The hypocrisy behind its public declarations and its own actions is almost a joke.

Attack Fears Spurred Nuclear Block
Iran, in a confidential letter posted Friday on an internal Web site of the UN nuclear monitor, said its fear of attack from the US and Israel prompted its decision to withhold information from the agency. In the letter, Iran said the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency had repeatedly allowed confidential information crucial to the country's security to be leaked.

Sanctioning the next war of aggression (03/26/07)
United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has once again voted to impose yet another sanction on Iran for its failure to suspend a legal activity allowed by the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty [1], to which Iran remains a signatory state, and that the IAEA itself has found no indication of any nuclear material being diverted to military purposes. As in case of the UNSC resolution 1737 [2] approved in December 2006, the United States has played a key roll in draft of the language used and the push for its passage, in a continued effort to lay the ground for a planned military action against Iran.In an op-ed [3] written days following the ratification of resolution 1737, this writer urged readers and all those outraged by the Iraqi deception to stand up and repeatedly make it known, over the deafening megaphones of the war-mongers that: 1) Iran is not in breach of any international conventions or agreements. Processing of uranium is entirely within the guidelines of the NPT, and according to the IAEA, all fissile material have been accounted for and confirmed as not diverted to prohibited activities. Iran must have the Bomb (March 19, 2007)
Efforts to bully Tehran into abandoning uranium enrichment are both futile and dangerous. The proposed new package of United Nations sanctions against Iran is far from being the breakthrough it has been hailed. The world's fourth-largest oil producer has little to fear from modest economic restrictions. If Iran wants nuclear weapons, it is going to get them. The indications are that it does want them, and with good reason. The country faces the continuing hostility of the United States, which is engaged in a "war on terror" and has called Iran the world's "most active state sponsor of terrorism". The US has already invaded Iran's next-door neighbour, Iraq, but North Korea has shown that the Bomb provides immunity from American attack. Iran's most obvious potential antagonist in its region, Israel, possesses nuclear weapons, as do surrounding countries such as Pakistan, India and Russia. The British government has just announced that it considers nuclear weapons essential to its own security, for reasons far less obvious than those that must occur to any Iranian. British politicians are also in the habit of pointing out that possessing the Bomb guarantees global influence, something which Iran might well covet. Within living memory, Iranians have seen foreign powers invade their country, appropriate their oil resources and impose puppet rulers on them. Fewer than 20 years ago they were fighting an eight-year war on their border that claimed more than a million lives. It is entirely understandable that they should now wish to maximise their security. Any regime in Tehran that neglected to develop nuclear weapons would arguably be failing in its duty. CLIP

Resist the war drive against Iran

by George Galloway

March 28, 2007

The capture by Iranian forces of 15 British sailors in the Gulf brought shrill, bellicose headlines last weekend and calls for retribution.

The anti-war movement has done a superb job in winning a clear majority against the war and occupation in Iraq.

But no one should believe that because the case against the “war on terror” is so overwhelming then no British government can garner support for another military misadventure.

The capture of the British sailors has all the hallmarks of the kind of incident that has been used in the past as a reason either for war or for escalating confrontation.

In 1949 the British gunboat HMS Amethyst was fired on in the Yangtze river in China. There was much outrage in Britain at Mao’s People’s Liberation Army, which was on the verge of taking power, for shooting at the ship. There was little questioning of what a British ship was doing on a Chinese river.

Whether or not the British sailors were in Iranian waters is disputed. But what is not in dispute is that Britain has joined the US in pouring warships into the Gulf while pressuring and threatening Iran.

Reliable US sources have reported that special forces are already operating in Iran. The Stop the War Coalition has rightly argued that the occupation of Iraq threatens to generate a wider regional war.

The commander of the ship HMS Cornwall unwittingly captured the mentality of imperial occupation when he said the sailors had been captured in “our waters”. He meant the waters belonging under international law and treaty to the Republic of Iraq.

In addition to the immediate argument that this incident is not worth yet more bloodshed and war, it is vital to challenge this imperialist delusion.

Part of that is simply asking the obvious question: imagine if Iran occupied France, had scores of warships in the Channel, was reported to have commandos operating in the home counties, and was pushing for sanctions against Britain – how would public opinion, the media and the British government react?

What makes anyone think Iran is any different?

Secondly, as propagandists try to gloss the “war on terror” in fake humanitarianism, more and more people need to shout out the single greatest lesson of the anti-war movement.

It is not the business of Western governments and the corporations that back them, steeped in the blood and sweat of hundreds of millions of people across the globe, to bring “order” to the “savages”.

It is the business of those of us who live in those imperialist states to do all in our power to stop their militarism and to act in solidarity with those around the globe fighting for a better world.

Everywhere you go this week, make sure people are asking: what on earth are British gunboats doing in Iraqi or Iranian waters in a place called the Arabian or Persian Gulf thousands of miles from home?

It is up to all of us to oppose the war drive against Iran. Can you start a discussion at work or college, arrange a Stop the War meeting, get a letter into your local paper, petition on the streets?

And as the People’s Assembly in London agreed last week, if there is an attack on Iran, we will need civil disobedience in every community, walkouts in every school, protests and strikes in every workplace.

If George Bush bombs Iran, we should bring this country to a standstill.

An Open Letter to the President... Four and a Half Years Later

By Sean Penn

03/25/07 "ICH " --- -- Four and a half years ago, I addressed the issue of war in an open letter to our President. Today I would like to again speak to him and his, directly. Mr. President, Mr. Cheney, Ms. Rice et al: Indeed America has a rich history of greatness -indeed, America is still today a devastating military.

And because, in the absence of a competent or brave Congress, of a mobilized citizenry, that level of power lies in your hands, it is you who have misused it to become our country's and our constitution's most devastating enemy. You have broken our country and our hearts. The needless blood on your hands, and therefore, on our own, is drowning the freedom, the security, and the dream that America might have been, once healed of and awakened by, the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

But now, we are encouraged to self-censor any words that might be perceived as inflammatory - if our belief is that this war should stop today. We cower as you point fingers telling us to "support our troops." Well, you and the smarmy pundits in your pocket, those who bathe in the moisture of your soiled and bloodstained underwear, can take that noise and shove it. We will be snowed no more. Let's make this crystal clear. We do support our troops in our stand, while you exploit them and their families. The verdict is in. You lied, connived, and exploited your own countrymen and most of all, our troops.

You Misters Bush and Cheney; you Ms. Rice are villainously and criminally obscene people, obscene human beings, incompetent even to fulfill your own self-serving agenda, while tragically neglectful and destructive of ours and our country's. And I got a question for your daughters Mr. Bush. They're not children anymore. Do they support your policy in Iraq? If they do, how dare they not be in uniform, while the children of the poor; black, white, Asian, Hispanic, and all the other American working men and women are slaughtered, maimed and flown back into this country under cover of darkness.

Now, because I've been on the streets of Baghdad during this occupational war, outside the Green Zone, without security, and you haven't; I've met children there. In that country of 25 million, these children have now suffered minimally, a rainstorm of civilian death around and among them totaling the equivalent of two hundred September 11ths in just four years of war. Two hundred 9/11s. Two hundred 9/11s.

You want to rattle sabers toward Iran now? Let me tell you something about Iran, because I've been there and you haven't. Iran is a great country. A great country. Does it have its haters? You bet. Just like the United States has its haters. Does it have a corrupt regime? You bet. Just like the United States has a corrupt regime. Does it want a nuclear weapon? Maybe. Do we have one? You bet. But the people of Iran are great people. And if we give that corrupt leadership, (by attacking Iran militarily) the opportunity to unify that great country in hatred against us, we'll have been giving up one of our most promising future allies in decades. If you really know anything about Iran, you know exactly what I'm referring to. Of course your administration belittles diplomatic potential there, as those options rely on a credibility and geopolitical influence that you have aggressively squandered worldwide.

Speaking of squandering, how about the billion and a half dollars a day our Iraq-focused military is spending, where three weeks of that kind of spending, would pay the tab on a visionary levy-building project in New Orleans and relieve the entire continent of Africa from starvation and the spread of disease. Not to mention the continued funds now necessary, to not only rebuild our education and healthcare systems, but also, to give care and aid to the veterans of this war, both American and our Iraqi allies and friends who have lost everything.

You say we've kept the war on terror off our shores by responding to a criminal act of terror through state sponsored unilateral aggression in a country that took no part in that initial crime. That this war would be fought in Iraq or fought here. They are not our toilet. They are a country of human beings whose lives, while once oppressed by Saddam, are now lived in Dante's inferno.

My 15-year-old daughter was working on a comparative essay this week (you can ask Condi what a comparative essay is, as academic exercises fit the limits of her political expertise.) My daughter's essay, which understood substance over theory, discusses the strengths of the Nuremberg trial justice beside the alternate strategy of truth and reconciliation in South Africa, and I quote: "When we observe distinctions between one power and another, one justice and another, we consider the divide between retribution and reconciliation, of closure and disclosure." I can't do her essay justice in this forum, but at its core, it asks how, when, and why we compromise toward peace, punish for war, or balance both for something more.

This may focus another soft spot in the rhetoric of both sides. We're told not to engage in the "politics of attack." To "keep away from the negative"...Well, Mr. Bush, when speaking of your administration, that would leave us silent, and impotent indeed.

So, in conclusion, I address my remaining remarks to the choir: We all played nice recently at the sad passing of former President Ford. Pundits and players on all sides re-visited his pardoning of Richard Nixon with praise, stating that a divided nation found unity. But what of that precedent on deterrence now? Where is justice now? Let's unite, not only in stopping this war, but holding this administration accountable as well. Without impeachment, justice cannot prevail. In our time, or our children's. And let's make it clear to democrats and republicans alike that we are not willing to wait on '08 to hear them say again: "If I'd known then, what I know now."

Even in a so-called victory, what we saw yesterday was a House of Representatives that couldn't bring itself to represent either conscience or constituents. It's a tragedy that the Democratic Party's leadership in Congress refuses to allow the House to vote on Barbara Lee's amendment for a fully funded, orderly withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of this year. Elites circled the war wagons against this proposal, and postponed the day of reckoning that must come as soon as possible - a complete pullout of U.S. military forces from Iraq.

There are presidential candidates who understand this. We do have candidates of conscience. As things stand today, I will be voting for Dennis Kucinich, who has fought this war from the beginning. You might say Kucinich can't win. Well, we have an opportunity to re-establish the credibility of democracy as viewed by the world at large.

We can fire our current president. We can choose the next president. You and me, the farmer in Wisconsin, the boys at Google, and Bill Gates.

It's up to us to choose. Why don't we choose?!

From remarks at Congresswoman Barbara Lee's March 24 Town Hall Meeting on the 4th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

Mutually Assured Survival Or Mutually Assured Destruction? The Jewry is Still Out

by Steve Bhaerman

Last year during one of my comedy performances, someone asked the Swami, "What do you think about AIPAC?"

The Swami -- being the Swami -- answered, "AIPAC? I don't know about AIPAC. I'm more into Deepak. And Tupac. Gimme Deepak, Tupac and a six-pack, and you can keep your AIPAC."

Well, the audience liked the answer, but my serious side wasn't satisfied. I‚d been hearing disparaging remarks about AIPAC, which stands for American Israel Public Affairs Committee, but I had dismissed them as fringy, anti-semitic fulminations. The more I've read since then, however, the more I realize that this organization -- supported by many well-meaning Jewish people because it is "pro-Israel" -- is really a neocon front that hardly represents the majority of the Jewish people, let alone the people of Israel.

Just as George Bush and company have tried to pull the "you're either with us or against us" wool over our eyes, AIPAC and its posse define anti-semitism as any questioning of Israeli's policies no matter how questionable. They've tried to silence non-Jewish critics with the anti-semitic smear, and Jewish ones by calling them "self-hating Jews." As a Jewish American, I have come to the sad and disturbing conclusion that AIPAC is why we're still in Iraq and why we are now set to attack Iran. You've only to look at the news story about the recent AIPAC conference and the unenthusiastic response Nancy Pelosi received for not being sufficiently pro-war. Opening our eyes to AIPAC's power and influence makes it easier to understand why Congressional Democrats backed off of their stand to make an attack on Iran contingent on the approval of Congress.

As the world seems to be hurtling toward that self-fulfilling prophecy called "armageddon," the forces of fear and destruction seem to be polarizing to either side, each desperately trying to make sure that their evildoers will be able to out evil-do the evildoers on the other side. I like to consider myself a realist. As the old saying goes, "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there isn't someone following you." So -- just because our Middle East policies are fear-driven, greed-driven, misguided, obsolete and dangerous -- doesn't mean that there aren't toxic Islamic forces hell-bent on the destruction of Israel.

Try to imagine what it must feel like to know that the enemy that has vowed to destroy you has the power to launch weapons of mass destruction. Feel that, and you can empathize with civilians in Israel -- and Iran.

For in their fear for their own lives and destruction, many Israelis feel resigned to preemptively doing the same to the Iranians. Same old "us or them."

From M.A.D. to Madder

For nearly 45 years, the Cold War was kept on ice because of an eerie Strangelovian concept called "Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)." With both the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. overarmed to teeth, if any one side pushed the button, both sides would assuredly perish. Whether it was that delicate balance of power and fear or some other form of divine grace, no button was pushed and we are still here to be grateful.

But there is no such balance of power today. As the last superpower standing after the fall of the Soviet Union, the United States has super-abused its superpowers. Instead of following the advice of former Senator Gary Hart and treating terrorist cells like a criminal gang instead of a military force, we have squandered any good will we might have had left and have shown the entire world that we're not in the Middle East to keep the peace, we're there to keep the pieces. Of course, this is not the intent of the majority of Americans, nor is it the intent of the majority of Israelis. However with the neocons in control of both countries -- and with AIPAC successfully muzzling most dissent against Israeli policies, or marginalizing it as "anti-semitic" -- our two countries together are drawing the battle lines for an insane and unnecessary world war that will lead to countless deaths, not to mention irreparable ecologic harm.

Here's how the real balance of power stacks up. On one side, we have the "kill or be killed," "dominate or be dominated" world view, the one that has persisted for thousands of years and brought the world to the brink of destruction. Everything about this side sounds rational at first hearing because we humans habitually associate "normal" with "sane." But rationality has been replaced with rationalization, which goes something like this: The world is a bad place. It's always been that way, and always will be. We have to protect ourselves. We sincerely regret any unnecessary deaths -- of course, we will only do "surgical strikes" designed not to harm civilians, and besides those people hate us anyway.

Under this umbrella of self-protection, any violation of human rights, human decency, rule of law and morality is permitted as long as it can be rationalized as a "necessary evil." Even better if it can be done in secret and can be officially denied. That way, there can be the illusion of democracy, justice and living by spiritual principles. Of course anything built on a foundation of lies is destined to crumble and that accounts for the disheartenment both in America and Israel. The "self-protection" clause also means you can buddy up with "allies" who violate the very essence of who you are and who you believe yourself to be.

Check out this audio recording featuring Rev. John Hagee's speech at this spring's AIPAC conference. In fact, check out all the speeches, but particularly Rev. Hagee's whose intolerant beliefs are now tolerable because he supports Israel and in fact has asserted that the Book of Esther predicts the very attack on Iran that is soon to be launched. But hey, this is about self-preservation so it really doesn't matter which devils you sleep with, as long as they're on your side now.

That's one world view, the one that is considered "mainstream" in our society, despite any "naive" moral objections the rest of us may have.

There's a second world view, however, the same one put forth by spiritual teachers from Buddha to Jesus, and is at the bottom of every religion once the bullshit is boiled away. That world view insists that there is such a thing as a common humanity, and we are all in it together. It seems to be contrary to the "evidence," because if you look at human history -- well, it's more like inhuman history. However, when you consider how this evidence has been spun and is being spun, and how war is used to justify more war, it's easier to see how 80% to 90% of us get manipulated by a small group of manipulators who know how to press the buttons marked "fear" "survival" "patriotism" and "tribal loyalty."

This alternative world view that we're all in it together is the foundation of mutually-assured survival rather than the deadly alternative. It also reflects the heart essence of Judaism, Tikkun Olam -- the healing of the world. This notion of bringing healing to this world is in direct contradiction of Rev. Hagee, who subscribes to the "We're going to heaven and everyone else can go to hell" insanity.

Which brings us -- finally -- to the purpose of this email. My friend Diane Perlman, a political psychologist and activist has formed a new organization, JAIPAC (Jewish Analysts Investigating Peace and Conflict), and has written a compelling letter under the title: The New Pro-Israel, Mutually Assured Survival. There are indeed real problems and real conflicts in the Middle East, and Diane turns her wisdom and experience towards alternative ways of addressing them -- instead of doing what we've always done and being surprised when things are like they've always been, only worse. Please read and circulate this letter.

Can We Stop the Ticking Toxin in Time?

Reports from Soviet intelligence say that the United States plans to bomb Iran on April 6th, less than ten days from now. Was the information purposely released to give the Iranian government one more chance to drop the program? Was it released by the Soviets to alert the world? Is it a bluff? We don't know. We do know that this Administration is in deep trouble and has demonstrated that it will do anything -- anything -- to promote its own survival. An escalation of the state of war could empower them to declare a martial law state of "emergency." It would be risky for them, but then again their ass is just about grass anyway.

The purpose of prediction isn't panic, but prevention. I contend that had the voting fraud story not broken through the "soundless barrier" via RFK, Jr.'s Rolling Stone article last summer, people wouldn't have been aware of it, and the election results would have been different. Say what you will about the worminess of the Democratic Party, Congressional investigations are now going forward that will necessitate impeachment. So I am putting this email out in the hopes of averting the possibility of the Iran attack.

I am hoping that Jewish people of conscience allow themselves to lift the lid on AIPAC and ask themselves if AIPAC represents their true values. Here is a link to the upcoming issue of New York Review of Books where George Soros -- a key Democratic Party funder of Jewish heritage -- takes on AIPAC. I wish there was some kind of concerted action that would make a difference in preempting this preemptive war. Perhaps the field of awakening will be enough, perhaps it won't. Maybe there needs to be a letter-writing -- real mail, not email -- campaign to key members of Congress. Perhaps we need to follow the lead of former army Colonel Ann Wright who has urged the military to "refuse to drop bombs" if ordered to in Iran. The influence of the military cannot be underestimated at this time, particularly when we consider the loss of support for the current war on the part of troops in the field, not to mention the extraordinary editorials in all the official military publications the day before Election Day calling for Donald Rumsfeld's resignation.

When I was a kid, one of the things that made me proudest of my heritage was the willingness of Jews to be a stand for the rights of all, not just Jewish people. You may remember that two of those three civil rights workers killed in Mississippi in 1964 were Jewish, but what you may not know is that the NAACP was co-founded by Joel Elias Spingarn, a Jew. These days, the cry of "never again" no longer means never again a holocaust for anyone, but "never again for the Jews." This is an understandable nationalist sentiment, but it contradicts the spiritual foundation of Judaism.

This is a hugely challenging time for all peoples. How much easier it would be for a Messiah to come down and declare himself "the only Universal Law south of the Pleiades," or for the nasty machinations of empire to work their nastiness without our ever having to know about it. How much easier for us to immerse ourselves in reality TV so we don't have to engage reality, or insist we "create our own reality" without coming to grips with the reality we all share.

As with every religion, there comes a time when we have to distinguish between the spiritual essence, and the distortion being used to keep the powers that be in power in power. Or, as some wit once said, "Spirituality is our relationship with the Divine. Religion is crowd control." I hope this article and the connected links provide plenty of cognitive dissonance for both Jews and non-Jews alike. Which do we choose -- mutually assured survival, or mutually assured destruction? Given the delicate balance of life on earth at this point, the zero-sum game of "me or you" may end up as a big zero for all humanity and an F in works and plays well with others.

P.S. I expect lots of letters telling me I'm a self-hating Jew (with plenty of evidence of how Israel is absolutely right and justified), and other letters accusing me of being a zionist (including tons of evidence of how Jews have been responsible for any and all evil since the beginning of history). Please spare me these. I've read plenty on both sides already. Please DO send me any links to organizations and actions designed to preempt the preemptive strike on Iran. These will be sent to this list later this week. Meanwhile, pray for healing even if you're an atheist. As Swami says, "Who cares whether you believe in God? What really matters is, do you believe in Good?"

Subject: A Preemptive Peace Strike?

A Preemptive Peace Strike?

Dear Friends,

I received a lot of good feedback on the piece I sent out the other day on Mutually Assured Survival. I did get one letter saying that I was giving aid and comfort to the enemies of Israel, and another expressing concern that I used the word "toxic" to describe Muslims resisting western rule, but in general the response was positive. Both Jews and non-Jews alike expressed relief that we might now be able to have an open conversation about AIPAC and whether they do indeed represent what is best for Israel, America, the Middle East and the world.

The other feedback I received is that if indeed an attack is planned, we need to do whatever we can to preempt the preemptive attack. Someone volunteered to put up a website and coordinate a world wide massive prayer / meditation for April 5th, next Thursday. Having read as much as I have recently about "the field," I am convinced that the power of the group mind focused coherently on a positive thought cannot be underestimated. And what I said in the last e-mail, about the "Belief in Good" being more important than the "Belief in God" still stands. Anyone with good intentions can participate.

We have not come up with a particular prayer, although we are open to something simple and universal. We realize that innocent individuals throughout the Middle East have very real concerns for their lives and homes, and our intention should be -- as Buddha used to say -- "the happiness of all beings." Under a live and let live credo, this might indeed be possible.

In addition to working on the "invisible," let's consider how we can have an impact on the "visible" as well. Please consider these questions, and feel free to submit responses:

1. What are our political leverage points? If we were to contact anyone or any organization(s) via email, phone call, snail mail, who would that be?

2. The media has ignored the "possible attack on Iran" story. How can we make this a news story that cannot be ignored before it happens?

3. Which religious organizations are most likely to support a prayer / meditation, and notify their membership?

4. Who in Congress can millions of us contact who will take a public stand in Congress itself?

5. Any other ideas for a preemptive peace strike?

Finally, here are some further thoughts to spur your imagination.

From Children of God to Adults of God
Maybe Jesus and Einstein Were BOTH Right

The simple foundation for the "preemptive peace strike" is the "we're all in this together" world view, that has the foundation in every spiritual path -- some form of the Golden Rule. To paraphrase Alan Watts, it's time for we humans to stop worshipping the finger and notice where it's pointing. As Swami says, "Time for children of God to become adults of God." It's time for us as a species to stop playing stupid and realize that undertruthing each religion is the same code for successful behavior, whether you call it the law of karma or the Golden Rule: Treat others as you wish to be treated yourself. Interestingly, that prescription is now being confirmed by quantum physics and cellular biology.

Quantum physics tells us that everything is related, that what we perceive as cause and effect is really a network of relationships. However, we still seem to be stuck in "Newtonian politics," where we respond to all problems with an equal and opposite reaction. We're still operating in a "force-based" world view, instead of the relationship-based one that is operating on a more fundamental level.

Meanwhile, if we look at the 50 trillion cell community under our skin we find that every participating cell is supported with universal health care and full employment. There's truly no cell left behind. "Currency," in the form of ATP, flows first and foremost to those cells doing the most important job for the whole system. So while no working cell has to worry about where its next shipment of ATP is coming from, the dispersal of energy is based on whole-system thinking. Each organ has a job, and the organs tend not to fight with each other or withhold information out of fear or spite. Rarely if ever do you see the liver invading the pancreas to claim the Islets of Langerhans as its own.

The point being ... our human body is a cooperative network of cells with a worthy purpose -- to create "thrival" in the whole system, and benefit from that thrival themselves. When bliss courses through the body, every cell feels it. The other point being that we have now reached a population and activity threshold on this planet where in order to thrive (or even survive), we need to evolve to a more efficient level of organization. Understanding that each of us is a sentient, conscious "cell" in humanity and the body of the organism called "earth," is the gateway to creating a new relationship with each other and our world.

Whether we cite science or religion, it doesn't matter. They're both talking about the same thing. Whether we call it sanity, coherence, health, thrival, love -- it doesn't matter. "Do you believe in God?" is the wrong question. The question that leads us down the path to love and functionality is, "Do you believe in Good?"

It seems to me that America's Founding Fathers have been misinterpreted both by the religionists and the atheists. The religionists have insisted that America was founded as a "Christian nation," and the expression of that Christianity has to look a certain way. The atheists or humanists have focused on "separation of church and state" to mean that religious expression has no place in public life. Having recently read extensively about the spiritual views of Franklin, Jefferson and Washington in particular, what they really meant to establish as a foundation was the essence at the foundation of all religious expression. We can call this "the Golden Rule" and / or "the belief in Good."

So ... to get back to our foundation, the foundation for preemptive peace strike are these three principles:

1. We're all in this together.
2. Treat others as you wish to be treated.
3. Good exists, and we are here to express that good every day.

We may modify those, but that's the spiritual foundation for what we are doing. As far as I know, there is no existing political movement that has adopted that kind of universal spiritual stand without being attached to some religion or a specific form of religious expression. Thus, we encompass the belief in God, and the belief in Good.

The other thing is, we must broadcast a positive, proactive, connecting message from this strong foundation. That foundation is what -- when the fear and manipulation is removed -- we all have in common. It's the foundation the manipulators have tried to keep us away from by reinforcing our differences. We must constantly reaffirm our connections, even as we expose inconvenient truths.

In our communications, let's replace "my fear" with "my concern." Fear is fuel for the dominator. Concern is clear-sighted awareness, unpolluted by the incoherence caused by fearful reaction. We want to build our preemptive peace movement on the foundation of love, not fear. We are putting forth this call, this message, this movement because we love life, we love the world, we love other humans -- not because we fear the consequences of war. This is an important distinction. We may feel fear -- that's normal -- but to magnetize the imagination of the world, we must come from love. This is probably the most important contextual shift we can make in ourselves and encourage in others.

Interestingly, there is a powerful scientific foundation for Jesus's prescription to "love thine enemy." Dr. Leonard Laskow -- who I met and interviewed last month up in Ashland -- is the author of a book called "Healing With Love." He's an obstetrician and surgeon who had an epiphany years ago, and turned from his allopathic practice to psychiatry and hands on healing. One of the experiments he did "after hours" at Stanford involved cancer cells. He found that when he beamed love and acceptance of their right to exist, these cancer cells shrunk in size and influence. He didn't ask them to stop existing, just to not grow, and they complied. (I will have more to say about his work in my book with Bruce Lipton and in future Notes) This brings up a curious question: If you can "negotiate" with cancer cells through love and respect, what are the implications for terrorists or other "sociopathogens?"

One final thought about evolution. It is not a "top down" process of force, but rather a bottom up process of "emergence." We individuals are the key participants in this next stage of human and planetary evolution. This is one chance right now to create breakthrough and move love and functionality forward.

If you do have any ideas or contacts, please send them by Monday so we can get this up and running ASAP.

Former CIA official supports Professor's claim that official 9/11 Islamist conspiracy theory are lies

March 23, 2007

by Paul Chen

David Ray Griffin is widely recognized as one of the leading spokespersons of the 9/11 truth movement. This is by virtue of his previous four books on the subject. Professor Griffin and a growing list of scholars, other researchers as well as diverse experts and activists, reject the official Islamist mastermind conspiracy theory about 9/11 advanced by Establishment interests.

Although the 9/11 truth movement was long ignored by the U.S. government and the mainstream media, recent polls have shown that (as Time magazine has acknowledged) the rejection of the official theory has become "a mainstream political phenomenon."

It is not surprising, therefore, that the U.S. government and the Big Business controlled media have shifted tactics. No longer ignoring the 9/11 truth movement, they have released a flurry of stories and reports aimed at debunking it.

In David Ray Griffin's new book entitled Debunking 9/11, shows that these attempts can themselves be easily debunked.

"Debunking 9/11 is a superb compendium of the strong body of evidence showing the official U.S. Government story of what happened on September 11, 2001 to be almost certainly a monstrous series of lies. Tragically, the entire course of U.S. foreign and domestic policies since that date has grown out of these almost certain falsehoods," says Bill Christison, former senior official of the CIA.

Mr. Christison further indicates that, "This single book could (and should) provide the basis for the United Nations International Court of Justice, or some specially constituted global body (independent of the U.S.) to investigate with highest priority, and publicly report its findings about, the charge that unknown elements within the U.S. Government, and possibly some individuals elsewhere closely allied to the U.S., caused or contributed to causing the events of September 11 to happen."

Besides demonstrating the pitiful failure of "Debunking 9/11 Myths" (published by Popular Mechanics and endorsed by Senator John McCain), Professor Griffin critically challenges recent reports and stories put out by the US Department of State, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Time magazine.

Professor Griffin also responds to criticisms of these efforts by left-leaning and Christian publications -- which one might have expected to be supportive.

Throughout these critiques, Griffin shows that the charge that is regularly leveled against critics of the official theory -- that they employ irrational and unscientific methods to defend conclusions based on faith -- actually applies more fully to those who defend the official theory.

"Considering how the 9/11 tragedy has been used by the Bush administration to propel us into immoral wars again and again, I believe that David Ray Griffin's provocative questions about 9/11 deserve to be investigated and addressed," says Howard Zinn, author of A People's History of the United States.

"Professor Griffin is the nemesis of the 9/11 cover-up. This new book destroys the credibility of the NIST and Popular Mechanics reports and annihilates his critics," says Paul Craig Roberts, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury during the Reagan administration.

"David Ray Griffin hits another one out of the park by taking on the left gatekeepers and the mass media for the lies and cover-up called ‘the official story of 9/11/01’‚ which is the greatest conspiracy theory ever perpetrated on the American public. I highly recommend this book for all thinking Americans," further indicates Meria Heller, Producer Host of the Meria Heller Show (

This book, by debunking the most prevalent attempts to refute the evidence cited by the 9/11 truth movement, shows that this movement's central claim -- that 9/11 was an inside job -- remains the only explanation that fits the facts.

Hotter-burning sun warming the planet

By Michael Leidig

The sun is burning hotter than usual, offering a possible explanation for global warming that needs to be weighed when proceeding with expensive efforts to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, Swiss and German scientists say.

"The sun has been at its strongest over the past 60 years and may now be affecting global temperatures," said Sami Solanki, the director of the renowned Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Gottingen, Germany, who led the research.

"The sun is in a changed state. It is brighter than it was a few hundred years ago and this brightening started relatively recently — in the last 100 to 150 years," Mr. Solanski said.

Average global temperatures have increased by about 0.2 degrees Celsius (0.36 degrees Fahrenheit) over the past 20 years and are widely believed to be responsible for new extremes in weather patterns.

Globally, 1997, 1998 and 2002 were the hottest years since worldwide weather records were first collated in 1860.

Bill Burrows, a climatologist and a member of the Royal Meteorological Society, welcomed Mr. Solanki's research.

"It shows that there is enough happening on the solar front to merit further research. Perhaps we are devoting too many resources to correcting human effects on the climate without being sure that we are the major contributor," he said.

Mr. Solanki said that the brighter sun and higher levels of so-called "greenhouse gases" both contributed to the change in the Earth's temperature, but it was impossible to say which had the greater impact.

Most scientists agree that greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide from fossil fuels have contributed to the warming of the planet in the past few decades, but have questioned whether other factors beyond man's control are also to blame.

To determine the sun's role in global warming, Mr. Solanki's research team measured magnetic zones on the sun's surface known as sunspots, which are believed to intensify the sun's energy output.

The team studied sunspot data going back several hundred years. They found that a dearth of sunspots signaled a cold period — which could last up to 50 years — but that over the past century their numbers had increased as the Earth's climate grew steadily warmer.

Mr. Solanki does not know what is causing the sun to burn brighter now or how long this cycle would last.

He says that the increased solar brightness over the past 20 years has not been enough to cause the observed climate changes, but believes that the impact of intense sunshine on the ozone layer and cloud cover could be affecting the climate more than the sunlight itself.

David Viner, the senior research scientist at the University of East Anglia's climatic research unit, said the research showed that the sun did have an effect on global warming.

He added, however, that the study also showed that over the past 20 years, the number of sunspots had remained roughly constant, while the Earth's temperature had continued to increase.

This suggested that over the past 20 years, human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation had begun to dominate "the natural factors involved in climate change," he said.

EARTH HOUR - 7.30pm to 8.30pm - Saturday March 31, 2007

Earth Hour is a fabulous opportunity for you and your family to do something about climate change. On one night, in one hour, more will be done, more will be demonstrated, and more will be learned than through a hundred 'talk-fests'. And you can help make it happen.

What is Earth Hour?

It sounds simple, but it is very, very dramatic. At 7.30pm on March 31st 2007, we will be encouraging companies, government departments, individuals and families to turn off their lights for just one hour. If we meet our objectives during the first Earth Hour, the savings in green house gas emissions will be the equivalent of taking 75,000 medium sized cars off the road for one whole year! Now that's something worth doing.

The facts are alarmingly clear:

* The climate is changing! The 10 hottest years on record have occurred since 1990. In fact 2005 was the hottest year since record keeping began.

* More than 95% of the Great Barrier Reef will have been destroyed by 2050 if carbon dioxide emissions aren't reduced. (WWF-International)

* One million species worldwide are facing extinction due to climate change.

But not everybody listens to the facts. Earth Hour is your opportunity to demonstrate how a simple change in our way of life could change, and help save, our planet.

The goals of Earth Hour:

Households : Most of us use unnecessary electricity. Appliances on standby, old style light bulbs, lights left on when we're not using them. Earth Hour will help us all to realise just how simply we can make a dramatic impact upon global warming (and our own power bills). We will see it in action.

Companies : We want companies to be involved. If every company turned off its lights when the buildings weren't in use, and combined it with energy saving technology, we would save between 2 and 4 million tonnes of greenhouse gasses every year. Earth Hour will show companies just how easy that is.

To make it an annual event : Out of the 8,766 hours in a year, let's give one back to the earth.

What you can do:

Sign up to Earth Hour and Pledge to turn off your lights on March 31st from 7.30pm to 8.30pm by logging onto

You will receive all the information you need to make Earth Hour a great success (and to cut your own energy bills in the long term). Pledging is free.

Get off standby : Turn off all the electronic equipment and appliances in your home that are not being used or are on standby. Computers, televisions, stereo equipment, phone chargers, DVD or video equipment.

Tell a friend : Spread the word about earth Hour by involving your friends, family and workmates. Get them to pledge at and most importantly, turn off the lights at 7.30pm Saturday 31 March 2007.

Spread the word - Once you have signed up for Earth Hour tell a friend; spread the word at work; tell your boss; mention it at school, at your local sports club or society group, you can even run it past your neighbours!

Make it an event. Get your family and friends to switch off their lights as well; Take some binoculars and look at the stars; sit and talk by candlelight; Explore your backyard by torchlight; Have fun with sparklers; or just do something non-electric as a family; Have a picnic-at-dusk; pretend you are camping; or have a candlelight dinner.

Friends and Star Kids,

During the recent March on the Pentagon, Fran Harris and I were standing in front of the Pentagon and took a remote-viewing sojourn within and under the Pentagon. We both independently perceived Star Visitors being held captive there and languishing painfully. They are being held by Cabal operatives under duress and threat of death, hoping to extract some information from them.

(Abu-Grahib and Guantanamo are not the only installations were atrocities have been going on.)

We also learned that there are lightworkers as well as Humans of good will among the staff who have custody duty of these Star Visitors. (Many military think they are following authentic orders when they are in fact being used by the Cabal.) These "White Hats" within the Pentagon are willing to help liberate these Star Visitors, if they have the help of Star Nations to get around the considerable security and other barriers to freedom. Needless to say, Star Nations is ready to assist.

Star Nations as requested that we do another Joint Psychic Exercise, focused on liberating these Star Visitor captives, because "more lives can be liberated than just by those [lightworkers] within [the Pentagon] who are somewhat limited." What Star Nations wants is for us to do an all-out deactivation of confinement-related equipment and electrical and computer systems, and holding back of Cabal troops, and creating of a protective energy environment for the Star Visitor captives. Star Nations can then insert their personnel to guide the captives out to a waiting starship.

You know the drill. We did this already last June 27th, when we helped Star Nations liberate that Altairian-Sirian Star Visitor woman being held and tortured at Naval Weapons Station Charleston.

Some of you will focus on disrupting Pentagon containment systems. Others will focus on safeguarding the Star Visitor captives. Others will focus on helping Star Nations workers get through safely in and out. Or on enhancing Pentagon lightworkers motivation to help free the prisoners at that time.

We do not need to disrupt the entire Pentagon. Our effort is trained on those rogue Cabal-operation floors and facilities where Star Visitors are being imprisoned.

This Joint Psychic Exercise will also encompass liberation efforts of others of Star Nations ancestry who are being held in one or more other locations, to the extent that some of you have extra intention and energy to direct to those situations also. Sorry, no location details are available.

Thank you.

The time of the Joint Psychic Exercise, this Saturday, March 31, is as follows:

Hawai'ian Islands: 6 am, Saturday

The Pentagon's Power to Jail Americans Indefinitely

by Jacob G. Hornberger, March 26, 2007

The presiding judge in the Jose Padilla case has held that the Sixth Amendment's guarantee of a speedy trial does not protect American citizens from being indefinitely incarcerated by the Pentagon.

Padilla had filed a motion to dismiss the case on the ground that the federal government had denied him his right to a speedy trial. Padilla has been in custody since May 2002 and his trial, which is scheduled to begin in April, is not being held until some five years later.

From May 2002 until January 2006, Padilla was held in U.S. military custody as an "enemy combatant" in the "war on terror." In January 2006, the Pentagon chose to transfer custody of Padilla to the U.S. Justice Department, which had indicted Padilla on terrorism charges in U.S. District Court. (Ever since 9/11, U.S. officials have had the option of treating people suspected of terrorism either as "enemy combatants" or as federal-court defendants.)

Last Friday, the presiding judge in the case, Marcia Cooke, denied Padilla's motion to dismiss. The judge held that when a person, including an American citizen, is held in custody by the Pentagon as an "enemy combatant," the time doesn't start running with respect to his right to a speedy trial. It begins running, she held, only when he becomes part of the federal criminal-justice system.

Gee, I wonder if the judge's reasoning applies to the rest of the Bill of Rights as well. Maybe the First Amendment doesn't apply if it's the Pentagon that is suppressing speech and assembly as part of its perpetual "war on terror." Or maybe the Second Amendment prohibits only the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), not the Pentagon, from seizing guns from the American people, as it is doing as part of the "war on terror" in Iraq.

Our 18th-century American ancestors would have found Judge Cooke's ruling to be ludicrous. If a military department of government is exempt from the restrictions of the Bill of Rights, then the entire executive branch is exempt for the obvious reason: Whenever the government wants to exempt itself from the Bill of Rights, all it has to do is employ the military to do the dirty deed. The purpose of the Bill of Rights was to protect the American people from the federal government, not a particular department of the federal government.

What Judge Cooke obviously fails to recognize is the deep antipathy to militarism and to an enormous standing military force that characterized our American ancestors. Unlike Judge Cooke, they understood the tremendous threat to the freedom and well-being of the American people that militarism and a standing army would pose.

This week, Judge Cooke is scheduled to rule on Padilla's motion to dismiss on the basis of the government's torture and abuse of Padilla while he was in pretrial military confinement. It will be interesting to see if Judge Cook rules that that the military is also exempt from that part of the Bill of Rights that prohibits the federal government from inflicting cruel and unusual punishments on Americans and others suspected of terrorism.

Don't forget: Jose Padilla is an American citizen. Thus, this case continues to hold ominous implications for the American people, especially when Judge Cooke's ruling is considered in conjunction with the ruling of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals that upheld the government's "enemy-combatant" designation for Americans as part of its "war on terrorism." That means that whatever the government has done — and continues doing to Padilla — and, for that matter, every other "enemy combatant" in its "war on terror," — it has the authority to do to all Americans.

End of Oil Heralds Climate Pain

By David Strahan

BBC News - 29 March 2007

Many people think that running out of oil, or "peak oil," would be good for the climate. In his new book The Last Oil Shock, David Strahan begs to differ; he suggests it may bring catastrophe.

It is becoming increasingly clear that global oil production will soon go into terminal decline, with potentially devastating economic consequences.

Although the idea of peak oil has traditionally been ridiculed by the industry, now even some of the world's most senior oilmen concede the case.

Last year Thierry Desmarest, chairman of Total, the world's fourth largest oil company, declared that production would peak by around 2020.

He urged governments to find ways to suppress oil demand growth and put off the witching hour.

Other forecasters are convinced the peak date is even closer.

But many environmentalists continue to resist the idea.

Some seem to suspect that anybody who argues that oil production is set to fall must be a closet climate change denier with a secret agenda.

Others, like Stephen Tindale of Greenpeace, instinctively distrust forecasts of an imminent peak, but wish fervently that it would come soon.

"Let's hope that the oil does run out", he told me, "and that the world has to develop alternatives to oil seriously quickly, and from a climate point of view that would be an excellent outcome."

Neither position could be more wrong.

Dirty Growth

It is mathematically impossible that peak oil will solve climate change.

Although oil is the biggest single source of energy-related greenhouse gases, coal and gas combined are bigger still, and the expected growth in their emissions would overwhelm any reduction from oil.

As I demonstrate in The Last Oil Shock using the International Energy Agency's "business-as-usual" forecast, even if oil production peaks in 2010 and immediately starts to fall at 3% a year, total emissions would still rise by 25%, reaching 32 billion tonnes in 2030.

Yet by that time, we need to be well on the way to at least a 60% cut in emissions.

In fact peak oil could even make emissions worse if it drives us to exploit the wrong kinds of fuel.

Burning rainforest and peatlands to create palm oil plantations for biofuels releases vast amounts of CO2, and has already made Indonesia, according to some ways of calculating it, the world's third biggest emitter after the US and China.

Synthetic transport fuels made from natural gas using the Fischer-Tropsch process emit even more carbon on a well-to-wheels basis than conventional crude; and when the feedstock is coal, the emissions double.

None of these alternatives are likely to fill the gap left by conventional crude - at least, not in time.

But because they are so much more carbon intensive, it is quite easy to conjure scenarios in which we still suffer fuel shortages while emitting even more CO2 than in the current business-as-usual forecast - the worst of all possible worlds.

Land Fill

Although these fuels are likely to prove inadequate, we may be driven to use them because cleaner alternatives are even more inadequate, for a variety of reasons.

Biofuels can be produced sustainably and with real CO2 reductions, but in the industrialised world there simply isn't the land.

In the developing world, however, there are vast swathes of land which could be put to sugar cane in a sustainable fashion; but the scale of the task of replacing crude oil would still be monumental.

I calculate that to substitute the fuel lost through a post-peak oil production annual decline of 3% would mean planting about 200,000 sq km - equivalent to the land area of Cuba, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea - every year.

Alternatively, if we decided to run Britain's road transport system, say, on cleanly produced hydrogen - electrolysing water using non-CO2-emitting forms of generation - our options would be:

• 67 Sizewell B nuclear power stations;

• a solar array covering every inch of Norfolk and Derbyshire combined;

• or a wind farm bigger than the entire southwest region of England.

Price Sores

When oil production starts to fall, the economic impacts could well be devastating.

Soaring crude prices could tip the world into a depression deeper than that of the 1930s, and collapsing stock markets cripple our ability to finance the expensive clean energy infrastructure we need.

As the unemployment lines grow, the political will to tackle climate change may be sapped by the need to keep the lights burning as cheaply as possible.

Many environmentalists seem to dismiss or ignore peak oil because they simply cannot see it as significant when compared to climate change.

But this is to miss the point.

Oil depletion is deadly serious in its own right, but it also has the capacity both to worsen emissions and destroy the wealth needed to fight global warming.

For this reason - among others - it too has the power to destroy our civilisation.

Fidel Castro Slams Food for Fuel (March 29, 2007)
(Prensa Latina) Cuban President Fidel Castro criticized on Thursday "the sinister idea of turning food into fuel," which was definitively established as an economic line of the US foreign policy."I think reducing and also recycling all engines that consume electricity and fuel is an elemental and urgent need of all humanity," stated the Cuban Revolution leader in an article published in Granma newspaper today. It is a tragedy to turn food into fuel, warned the text entitled "Over three billion people in the world condemned to premature death due to starvation and thirst."This is not an exaggerated, rather cautious figure, said Fidel Castro, who mentions in his comment the meeting President George W. Bush held with US car manufacturers on March 26. According to a press release, participants in the meeting discussed a group of measures to support the production of cars with alternative fuel and attempts to develop ethanol from grass or sawdust. The Cuban president explains that with one ton of corn we can only produce 109 gallons of ethanol, so we need about 320 million tons of that grain to produce 35 billion gallons of ethanol. In the case of Cuba, the statesman said, "those lands dedicated to the direct production of alcohol can be much more useful to produce food for the people and to protect the environment." Fidel Castro also highlighted that all countries of the world, rich and poor, could save millions of dollars in investment and fuel by just changing incandescent for energy-saving light bulbs, something which has been carried out in all the island's homes.

If you think you are spending more each week at the supermarket, you may be right. The escalating share of the U.S. grain harvest going to ethanol distilleries is driving up food prices worldwide. Corn prices have doubled over the last year, wheat futures are trading at their highest level in 10 years, and rice prices are rising too. In addition, soybean futures have risen by half. A Bloomberg analysis notes that the soaring use of corn as the feedstock for fuel ethanol" is creating unintended consequences throughout the global food chain. The countries initially hit by rising food prices are those where corn is the staple food. In Mexico, one of more than 20 countries with acorn-based diet, the price of tortillas is up by 60 percent. Angry Mexicans in crowds of up to 75,000 have taken to the streets in protest, forcing the government to institute price controls on tortillas. Food prices are also rising in China, India, and the United States, countries that contain 40 percent of the world's people. While relatively little corn is eaten directly in these countries, vast quantities are consumed indirectly in meat, milk, and eggs in both China and the United States.Rising grain and soybean prices are driving up meat and egg prices in China. CLIP

In US Midwest, Young Farmers Priced Out of Land
Real estate prices in cities may be falling, but in Midwestern farm country, land values are going through the roof. Fueled by heavy ethanol demand, which has pushed up corn prices, land that sold for $4,500 an acre a year ago might go for about $6,000 an acre today.

Biofuels Boom Spurring Deforestation
Nearly 40,000 hectares of forest vanish every day, driven by the world's growing hunger for timber, pulp and paper, and, ironically, by new biofuels and carbon credits designed to protect the environment. The irony here is that the growing eagerness to slow climate change by using biofuels and planting millions of trees for carbon credits has resulted in new major causes of deforestation, say activists. And that is making climate change worse because deforestation puts far more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire world's fleet of cars, trucks, planes, trains and ships combined. "Biofuels are rapidly becoming the main cause of deforestation in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Brazil," said Simone Lovera, managing coordinator of the Global Forest Coalition, an environmental NGO based in Asunción, Paraguay. "We call it 'deforestation diesel,'" Lovera told IPS. Oil from African palm trees is considered to be one of the best and cheapest sources of biodiesel and energy companies are investing billions into acquiring or developing oil-palm plantations in developing countries. Vast tracts of forest in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and many other countries have been cleared to grow oil palms. Oil palm has become the world's number one fruit crop, well ahead of bananas. Biodiesel offers many environmental benefits over diesel from petroleum, including reductions in air pollutants, but the enormous global thirst means millions more hectares could be converted into monocultures of oil palm. A Cluster Bomb Treaty: Again, It's the U.S. v. the World

Scott Stedjan and Laura Weis

March 23, 2007

On March 6, 2007, the U.S. Department of State released its Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2006. This annual report to Congress details the human rights practices of foreign governments, from restrictions on free press in Iran, to extrajudicial killings in Pakistan, to spiraling violence in the Darfur region of Sudan. The Country Reports do not, however, “purport to assess any human rights implications of actions by the United States Government or its representatives.” If they did, the reports would expose the grave consequences of U.S. policies in a world where the use and sale of inaccurate and unreliable weapons tends to trump humanitarian concerns.

Consider last summer’s conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Israel’s irresponsible use of cluster bombs in and around civilian areas in southern Lebanon has been widely documented and condemned. Israel bought the majority of these weapons from the United States. Demining groups estimate that they contained some 2.6 million to 4 million bomblets, around 90 percent of which were fired during the last 72 hours of the conflict. As of February 14, 2007, the UN Mine Action Coordination Center (UNMACC) in South Lebanon had identified 847 cluster bomb strike locations, contaminating a total of 34 million square meters of land. Since a UN-brokered ceasefire went into effect on August 14, UNMACC has reported 216 civilian and demining casualties in southern Lebanon –30 deaths and 186 injuries.

The disproportionate number of civilian casualties resulting from cluster bombs used during Israel's war with Hezbollah prompted the State Department to investigate the use of U.S.-made weapons in the conflict. Subsequently, in January 2007 the State Department notified Congress in a classified report that Israel may have violated end use agreements when it used the U.S.-made cluster bombs in Lebanon. Yet while the State Department’s Country Report on Lebanon acknowledges the aftermath of Israeli cluster bomb strikes, any mention in the report of the U.S. role in providing Israel with these weapons is glaringly absent.

Article 51 of the UN Charter acknowledges the right of all states to individual or collective self-defense and to raise armies and procure armaments to that end. Thus, it is not surprising that the U.S. and Israel use weapons that they see as militarily useful to defeat an enemy in the shortest time possible. However, Article 51 is not absolute; international humanitarian law calls for a balance to be struck between the military utility of a particular weapon and its humanitarian consequences. In the recent history of warfare, the use of certain weapons, such as antipersonnel landmines, incendiary weapons, and biological weapons, were limited or banned because a judgment was made that the humanitarian consequences outweighed the military utility of the weapon. Cluster bombs should be added to the list of unacceptable weapons.

A cluster bomb consists of a canister designed to open in mid-air and disperse smaller submunitions, often referred to as bomblets. Cluster bombs are area weapons, meaning they are not designed to attack a precise target, but rather to destroy all potential targets in a target area. Depending on the type of munition and the delivery system, the footprint of one cluster bomb can be as large as one square kilometer (about 250 acres). Cluster bombs were originally designed to attack enemy forces lined up on a battlefield. Instead of sending a sortie of fighters to drop dozens of unitary bombs, a fighter pilot could limit his or her exposure to anti-aircraft fire by dropping one cluster bomb.

The humanitarian suffering that continues in Lebanon and numerous other countries plagued by the lasting effects of cluster munitions should compel governments to examine the military utility of cluster bombs. Trends in warfare show a shift from war-fighting against symmetrical forces on open terrain to asymmetrical fighting in civilian areas. The wide dispersal pattern of bomblets makes avoiding civilian casualties when the weapons are fired on populated areas nearly impossible. A 2003 “lessons learned” report by a U.S. Army Infantry Division labeled its cluster munitions as “losers” and suggested they were “a Cold War relic.” This report also noted that cluster munitions were “not for use in urban areas.”

The long-term effects of a weapon on populations must also be part of the equation when governments consider military utility. While designed to explode on impact, cluster bomblets typically fail to detonate as intended approximately 5 percent to 30 percent of the time, leaving behind large numbers of hazardous explosive “duds” that are akin to landmines, injuring and killing civilians and contaminating the land long after conflicts. The United Nations Mine Action Coordination Center in South Lebanon estimates that as many as 40 percent of Israeli cluster munitions used during the conflict failed to explode, leaving anywhere from 563,200 to 1,126,400 unexploded bomblets in the southern part of the country. If Lebanon’s future mirrors that of other countries affected by cluster bombs, civilians will be impacted by these weapons for years to come. The last cluster bomb was dropped on Laos in 1973, and people in that country are still affected by their use. In the past 30 years, 12,000 Laotian civilians, many of whom were not born when the bombs were dropped, have died from contact with an unexploded cluster dud.

Thankfully, the international community is taking action. In an historic step forward, Norway hosted the Oslo Conference on Cluster Munitions in late February 2007, where 49 countries met to discuss how to address the indiscriminate and lasting effects of cluster munitions on civilians. At the conference, 46 countries agreed to a landmark declaration detailing their goal to conclude by 2008 a legally binding treaty prohibiting the use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians. Half of the world’s 34 producer countries, one-third of the world’s stockpiling countries, six users or former users, and six affected states signed the Oslo declaration. Countries will meet again to determine the details of the treaty in Lima, Vienna, and Dublin over the next two years. The Bush administration did not send a representative to the Oslo meeting and, absent a policy change, is unlikely to participate in subsequent meetings.
