"God Bless You!!!!! With all the emails I receive, (and there are many!), yours is the one I look forward to and read, 'front to back', so to speak. As to Matthew's messages, I have read all the Matthew books, and am in touch with Suzanne Ward, who is one superb human being. (Talk about synchronicity!!) I am going to forward your site to all that I feel needs to, and wants to, be informed. It is such an amazing compilation, I almost don't have to go elsewhere to get the news and other items in your emails. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. With love and peace."

"Most of you know that I am deeply involved not only in spreading inspiration and transformation in our world, but also in revealing major cover-ups of which few people are aware. I am working with an incredible network of transformation workers to inform concerned citizens of what we've found and to build a critical mass of people committed to strengthening democracy and building a brighter future. The amount of secrecy, greed, and corruption that we've uncovered and which is being hidden from public view is staggering. Yet the amount of transformation, empowerment, and love breaking out all over the planet is equally staggering! Almost every day I learn about amazing new individuals, groups, workshops, or websites deeply dedicated to transformation through love and cooperation. What an exciting time it is to be alive!"

Congress Destroying Freedom of the Internet
The Internet is a sparkling example of how powerful "we the people" can become with access to total freedom of information, and the capability to communicate it instantly around the world. The powers that rule the world, and the puppet governments that serve them, are also completely aware that the Internet, as it is currently constituted, presents the single greatest threat to their agenda of world totalitarian government. This is why it is currently under attack on several fronts, including our own elected US Congress, where this Wednesday (4/26/06) a bill will likely be approved by the House Commerce Committee that will turn control of the Internet over to the huge corporations that currently monopolize what's left of the telecommunications industry, such as AT&T, Verizon and Comcast. If approved by Congress as a whole, the result will be an inexorable first step in the destruction of the freedom of the Internet. And as with everything that is of real significance, this issue is flying completely beneath the radar, as the mainstream media is not covering it. I urge you to learn more by reading this week's featured article by Art Brodsky, and visit a brand new website, , where you can take immediate action to play your part in saving the Internet. And it's ridiculously easy. It will take about one-minute of your time. Click on "Act Now," and send letters to your Senators and congress person. It's all totally automated. Just type in your name and zip code, and everything else is done electronically. It's a wonderful example of what great things we can do with a free Internet. To read Art Brodsky's article, go at

A Time for Heresy
Bill Moyers argues that American democracy is threatened by perversions of money, power, and religion. Money has bought our elections right out from under us. Power has turned government "of, by, and for the people" into the patron of privilege. And Christianity and Islam have been hijacked by fundamentalists who have made religion the language of power, the excuse for violence, and the alibi for empire.

The very rich in America: “The kind of money you cannot comprehend” (19 April 2006)
(...) The sums that the very wealthy have at their disposal in the US are almost unimaginable: Oil executive Lee Raymond receiving some $400 million in a retirement package; the 2005 compensation of bank chairman Richard Fairbank totaling some $280 million; Omid Korestani, head of Google’s global sales, exercising stock options providing him with $288 million last year. The accumulation is brazen. (...) An insulated world of immense wealth exists as never before, at least in modern US history. The number of Americans with assets of $1 million or more reached 7.5 million in 2004, according to a survey conducted by the Spectrem Group. Beyond that, however, are those who possess “Ultra High Net Worth” (a mellifluous term invented by Merrill Lynch circa 2001): individuals in households with $5 million or more in net worth. In a country of 300 million people, the UHNW form a very small percentage of the population, but a not insignificant number in absolute terms. Economic, political and cultural life in America is to an enormous extent organized for their benefit. This is not simply obscene or unjust, it is socially irrational and immensely destructive. How is it possible to allocate resources, repair and renew the infrastructure, carry out any type of long-term economic planning, cure any social ills, when the official guiding principle is the ability of an oligarchic elite to accumulate ever-greater personal wealth? The gravitational pull of such wealth asserts itself in every aspect of life. (...) Judging by the results in published reports—no, not particularly. By and large, the fabulously wealthy have derived their fortunes from inheritance, the stock market, the real estate bubble, fortunate investments in technology or, perhaps, American militarism: in short, from semi-automatic economic and social processes associated with the lowering of living standards for millions in the US and the super-exploitation of masses of people in impoverished countries in other parts of the world. They are not startling or outstanding in any fashion, except perhaps in the depth of their greed and shortsightedness. So we learn that Microsoft’s Paul Allen owns a $250-million, 414-foot “gigayacht,” with seven decks, two helicopter landing pads, a swimming pool, a basketball court, an infirmary, a garage for Land Rovers, a movie theater, a concert space for 260 and a recording studio. Not to be outdone, Larry Ellison of software giant Oracle had his giant yacht built 452 feet long. Ellison’s vessel has five stories, 82 rooms, “a wine cellar the size of most beach bungalows, a dozen yacht-length tenders, and a generator capable of providing enough electricity for a small town in Idaho or Maine... Final cost: $377 million.” (Associated Press) The wealthy elite are also purchasing their own widebody airplanes, reports Business Week—Airbus A340s and Boeing 777s, which list for over $100 million—as “airborne penthouses.” Customized outfitting may add $25 to $30 million to the cost. (...) In 1957, Fortune magazine reported that some 250 or so individuals in the US were worth $50 million or more. The wealthiest of them, oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, stood all alone in the $700 million to $1 billion category. The equivalent of $50 million today—some $350 million—would not place an individual anywhere near the richest 400 people in the US, according to Forbes’s 2005 list (which begins at $900 million). Getty would find himself somewhere between 31st and 42nd on the list. (...) Today, the list of the super-rich reveals an extraordinary growth of parasitism. One indication is Forbes’ listing of the “400,” which includes an extraordinary number of people whose wealth, according to the publication, is derived from “Investments,” “Hedge Funds,” “Leveraged buyouts,” “Real estate,” “Fashion,” etc. The “captains of industry” of old are few and far between. (...) One could go on, but the outlines are clear. A type of aristocracy rules America, which has more than one feature in common with the ancien régime that presided over pre-revolutionary France. This vast accumulation of wealth at one pole of society is incompatible, in the long run, with even the trappings of democracy. The super-rich own everything in the US, including the political parties and the political process. They allow the population to vote at this point, more or less. But for how long? As resistance to the policies of the elite mounts and the two-party monopoly threatens to crumble, why should the riffraff be permitted a say in such important affairs as elections?

The Ten Worst Corporations of 2005
"The ongoing prosecutions of individuals associated with corporate financial scandals enabled Big Business and its apologists to claim there had actually been a crackdown on corporate crime." Mokhiber and Weissman write that this leaves "corporations free to buy legislation, profiteer, pollute, poison, and mistreat workers without restraint."

Top oil firms expected to report huge earnings (April 25, 2006)
The country's three largest oil and gas companies are expected to report combined first-quarter profits this week in excess of $16 billion, a 19 percent surge from last year. Elected officials are scrambling for ways to assuage angry consumers and businesses. President Bush on Tuesday gave the Environmental Protection Agency the authority to temporarily waive regional clean-fuel regulations to promote greater gasoline-supply flexibility, but members of Congress have other ideas. Some are renewing calls for a windfall profits tax and some want federal regulators to investigate industry consolidation. Still others are threatening hearings and expressing outrage at how the industry invests cautiously in new refining capacity yet rewards its executives lavishly. The combined earnings expected from ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp. will be 14 times greater than the combined first-quarter profits of Google Inc., Apple Computer Inc. and Oracle Corp. Analysts say full-year profits for the oil majors are likely to surpass the record-setting earnings of 2005, when Exxon reported a $36.13 billion profit ˜ the highest ever for a U.S. company.

More revelations of US profiteering and corruption in Iraq (21 April 2006)
New reports of bribery and corruption involving US military officers, businessmen and occupation officials have underscored the criminal character of the American intervention in Iraq. (...) The Boston Globe on April 17 published an article that gave some sense of the extent of the corruption in US-occupied Iraq. Citing Congressional investigators, the newspaper reported, “American contractors swindled hundreds of millions of dollars in Iraqi funds.” The article described how immediately after the invasion, US officials seized Iraq’s oil revenues and money found in bank accounts and placed the funds, totaling some $20.7 billion, in an account called the Development Fund for Iraq (DFI). This money was then doled out to contractors, mainly US firms, without the benefit of elementary controls or accounting procedures. The Globe cited a congressional audit revealing that out of 198 separate contracts issued, there was no evidence for 154 that any of the goods or services promised were actually delivered. “In some cases, contractors were paid twice for the same job,” the Globe reported. “In other cases, they were paid for work that was never done.” CLIP

Iraq Cost Could Reach $1 Trillion
There are many uncertainties about the progress made by coalition forces and the future prospects for stability and democracy in Iraq, but there is at least one indisputable fact: The Bush administration vastly underestimated the costs of the Iraq war.

Bush's Third War
"The Hundred Days is indelibly associated with Franklin D. Roosevelt, and the Thousand Days with John F. Kennedy. Mick beats George to suite,,2-2006180696,00.html
Jagger refuses to give up room for Bush - PRESIDENT George Bush can't get no satisfaction after Mick Jagger grabbed his hotel room. The Rolling Stone splashed out £3,600 a night for the suite days before the US leader tried to book it. Now Mick, 62, who has been a fierce critic of the Bush-led war in Iraq, is refusing to give it up. The veteran rocker hired the luxury Royal Suite at the five-star Imperial Hotel in Vienna, Austria, for June when the Stones are due to play a gig in the city. Bush's aides then tried to book it to tie in with a summit meeting. But Mick put his foot down and insisted he was keeping the booking. A source close to the millionaire singer said last night: "White House officials had wanted to reserve the suite and all the other rooms on the first floor. But Mick and the Stones had already booked every one of them. Bush's people seemed to be under the impression that they would just hand over the suites but there was no way Mick was going to do that." The classically-designed suite is said to be among the top 100 hotel rooms in the world. It boasts a 7ft 4in bed, chandeliers and oil paintings.Former presidents Ronald Reagan, John Kennedy and George Bush Snr all stayed there while they were in office. The hotel last night admitted US secret service agents vetted the accommodation — and confirmed that Bush would no longer be staying there. An American Embassy official refused to say where he was now staying for "security reasons". Mick takes a swipe at Bush, 59, on the latest Stones album A Bigger Bang, savaging his Iraq War policy.

Nepalese king bows to mass protests and offers to recall parliament (25 April 2006)
Confronted with the prospect of a further major protest today that is expected to attract hundreds of thousands, Nepal King Gyanendra made a short televised statement yesterday conceding one of the main demands of the seven-party opposition alliance—the immediate recall of parliament, which was dissolved in May 2002. Parliament is due to be convened on Friday. Gyanendra made no direct reference to the other major opposition demand—for the convening of a constituent assembly to rewrite the country’s constitution. He did, however, declare that his proclamation was being made “according to the road map of the agitating political parties”. In his first direct reference to the “people’s movement,” the king hypocritically expressed his condolences for those killed by the security forces he unleashed on the demonstrators. In February last year, Gyanendra arbitrarily seized executive power and ruled directly through his own cabinet of royalist appointees. His crackdown on political opposition, the press and all protests provoked widespread popular hostility. The king’s isolation was graphically exposed in February when he staged local government elections as “part of a road map for democracy” but was decisively rebuffed. The turnout was just 20 percent after the opposition called for a boycott. (...) Tens of thousands continued to protest on Sunday and Monday along ring road at the outskirts of the city, setting up barricades of burning logs and tyres. Many of them are young, frustrated not only with the lack of basic democratic rights but the lack of jobs and educational opportunities. During the past 19 days, soldiers and police have killed at least 14 people and injured hundreds. Some 5,000 party activists, journalists and other protesters have been detained. (...) There is no doubt that India, the US and the European powers all had a hand in pushing the king to make a further announcement last night. Opposition leaders have declared that today’s mass demonstration, expected to draw up to two million people, to be “a victory rally”—a clear signal that they are moving to end the protests. Whether that takes place is another matter. Many of those who have risked their lives confronting the security forces are deeply distrustful not only of the king but the entire political establishment, which has failed to meet the democratic aspirations and social needs of the Nepalese masses.

Nepal: Last Stand of a Monarchy
They came in the tens of thousands, ordinary Nepalis who defied a curfew and shoot-to-kill warnings, and marched through their capital to demand the King give up his power and restore democracy. And he greeted them with bullets. Soldiers and police opened fire on the protesters, shooting them down in the streets.

Sri Lankan peace talks on the verge of collapse (19 April 2006)
The Geneva peace talks between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are on the brink of collapse, amid escalating violence in the war zones of Sri Lanka’s North and East. Some 70 people, including military personnel, LTTE cadres and civilians, have been killed since the beginning of April. Many more have been injured and thousands have been displaced. The second round of negotiations were due to begin today, but were postponed until April 24-25 following a dispute over the transport of LTTE leaders from the East to the northern LTTE stronghold for discussions prior to the Geneva talks. (...) The LTTE is under intense international pressure to agree to talks and reach a peace deal to end the country’s 20-year civil war. The US in particular, which regards the conflict as a dangerous impediment to its growing economic and strategic interests in the region, is pressuring the LTTE to negotiate. It has one-sidedly condemned the latest attacks on Sri Lankan military personnel and in January issued a veiled threat to back Colombo in any renewed conflict. At the same time, however, the LTTE is desperate to shore up its eroding support among the Tamil minority. After three years of ceasefire, the social conditions of working people in the North and East have further eroded, fuelling discontent over LTTE taxes and autocratic rule. As a result, the LTTE has stirred up communal tensions and resorted to anti-Sinhala chauvinism to bolster its standing. Even if the second round of talks in Geneva does go ahead, there is little prospect for any substantive agreement. The inability of either side to make any significant concession reflects the fundamental inability of any section of the Sri Lankan ruling elite to break with the communal politics on which they have relied for more than 50 years to divide working people and maintain their precarious rule.

Sri Lanka Fighting Kills 100, Displaces Thousands, UN Says (26 April 2006)
Fighting in Sri Lanka during the past two days has killed at least 100 people and driven thousands from their homes after Sri Lanka's air force and navy fired missiles at rebel-held areas in Muttur following a suicide attack yesterday in Colombo that wounded the army commander.

Still Under Chernobyl's Shadow
In the two decades since one of the world's worst environmental disasters, global attention - and aid - has largely focused on Ukraine, where the Chernobyl plant is located. But the plight of Belarus, where 70 percent of Chernobyl's nuclear fallout descended, is less well known. Over a fifth of the country is still considered heavily contaminated, with 1.5 million people living in those areas. Some inhabit dangerous hot spots that authorities have sealed off with barbed-wire - which are reachable only by negotiating special police checkpoints.

Sweden Learned a Lesson From Chernobyl
Twenty years after Sweden alerted the world to the meltdown at Chernobyl, it aims to phase out nuclear power and end dependency on fossil fuels, putting the country in the vanguard of green energy policy.

Darfur: Genocide Without Witnesses
Khartoum is deliberately hindering international humanitarian action. While the international community commemorates the twelfth anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda - and, hand on heart, swears "Never again!" - murders, rapes, pillages and the forced displacement of black African populations, the Fur, Massalit, and Zaghawa, have continued for over three years in western Sudan. The Khartoum government has strengthened its military by arming Janjaweed militias recruited from nomadic tribes that claim Arab ethnicity to subdue the little-armed groups that have emerged from those populations. The repression is of an unheard-of ferocity: apart from massacres, Islamist National Front partisans in power organize slow death through hunger and disease. The death toll is terrible: 300,000 deaths, more than two million displaced persons who survive thanks to international humanitarian aid, 250,000 refugees in Chad and the Central African Republic. The number of Darfur inhabitants is estimated to be six million, of whom the larger half is black African (the remainder considered "Arab"). That means that, counting the dead and those displaced from their lands, more than two thirds of the black peoples of Darfur are involved. They are truly dislocated. Faced with this drama amply documented by innumerable reports, even if there are few photographs, the international community, well curbed by Khartoum's self-interested allies - Russia and especially China - has delegated an observation mandate to the African Union. With a presence of 7,000 soldiers in Darfur - a region as large as France - the African Union has found its mission systematically hindered by Khartoum: paralysis in the delivery of armored vehicles, refusal to supply airplane fuel, Sudanese government vehicles painted white to pass them off as African Union vehicles. And all the while, the exactions go on.... Let us recall that the United Nations investigation on the ground concluded that war crimes and crimes against humanity were taking place. CLIP

The healing power of placebos (May 2006)
A sugar pill, a salt solution, a doctor in a white jacket—these all have the power to cure as long as the patient believes in their healing qualities. That seems impossible. So what does science say about the elusive placebo effect? Very little research has been done in this area of medicine. The pharmaceutical industry can't profit; after all, they can't make money from sugar pills. It is often forgotten that the effect could help people and shave billions off spiralling health-care costs. If researchers could gain more insight into how the effect works, it would stand as one of the biggest medical breakthroughs in history. Some people are convinced that the effect proves that strength of mind is sufficient to heal the body. Placebos have...proven successful in treating depression, anxiety, stress, warts and ulcers—sometimes in as many as 60 to 70 percent of the cases. There are...objective effects everyone can measure. Placebo treatments have been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as improve reaction speeds, pulse rates and immune-system activity. Ultimately, the placebo phenomenon points to a strange paradox in modern medical science. As soon as an alternative-health treatment proves successful, it is dismissed as the placebo effect. It works only because people believe in it. Yet this explanation appears to contradict one of the foundations of medical science, which stresses that the mind and body are separate, therefore ruling out the possibility of healing through belief. Fossil fuels threatening sea life
Fossil fuels threatening sea life, researchers say Pollution - Acid levels from carbon dioxide are rising in the Pacific, impeding shell formation by Michael Milstein The Oregonian Scientists just back from a research cruise across the northern Pacific say the ocean has soaked up so much carbon dioxide from human burning of fossil fuels that it's turning more acidic, disrupting growth of coral and the tiny sea creatures salmon and other fish rely on for food. (...) Escalating ocean acidity can begin to dissolve the shells faster than the creatures can build them. Researchers estimate the oceans have become about 30 percent more acidic since humans began burning fossil fuels in large quantities, exhausting carbon dioxide into the environment. While carbon dioxide levels have been higher in the Earth's past, and oceans more acidic, "the rate at which they're changing has never been this fast," said Chris Sabine, another oceanographer on the trip. Ocean life is not used to such sharp shifts. Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are now higher than they have been at any time in at least 600,000 years. Scientists had expected the rising levels would turn oceans more corrosive. (...) He said the findings are unsettling, especially coming only weeks after findings that polar ice sheets are beginning to melt faster than expected in a shift that could raise sea levels worldwide. "All of this is really scary right now," said Hixon, who did not take part in the Pacific research cruise. "It's becoming clear that the biological effects of global warming are accelerating faster than previously anticipated." CLIP

UFO Magazine Book Review Majic Eyes Only
(...) The idea that major governments have covered up the true nature of the UFO phenomenon for more than half a century through unprecedented secrecy, deception and intimidation strikes many reasonable citizens as preposterous. Yet, this book provides a wealth of evidence, including declassified and leaked government documents and credible eyewitness testimony, which supports the uncomfortable truth of this "preposterous" notion.MAJIC EYES ONLY is a landmark synthesis and review of every credible UFO crash retrieval event uncovered worldwide to date. Assembling data from his own research and numerous other investigators, including crash retrieval pioneer Leonard Stringfield, the author presents 74 UFO crashes from 1897 to the present, supported by compelling evidence in the form of official documents, eyewitnesses and in some cases physical evidence. Incidents do vary in quality, evidence, and therefore authenticity. Recommended by Kalama Hawkrider>

Dear Jean

A little more than half an our ago, I finished my prayer/meditation (Meditation Focus #150: Shifting to Enlightened Leadership), in which I had the joy to join all my brothers and sisters in our Sunday devotion for love, peace and light on our planet.

We light workers are as human as anyone, and therefore, we need and welcome little signs showing us that our efforts are really cooperating in the working out of the desired situations.

When I first read Tom Engelhardt’s article "In the Rubble", I could not reprise a little sigh of mischievous (childish?) satisfaction. Especially about the two paragraphs I have highlighted for you to locate them easier.

They seemed to me like written especially for us all and most especially for you, who through the years have put so much time and effort in keeping our merry-go-round going on in a long lasting commitment of love.

Tom Englehardt wrote:

"...Looked at in the light of history, the incipient collapse of the Bush project seems to have occurred in hardly a blink. Its brevity is, in a sense, nearly inexplicable, as unexpected as water running uphill or an alien visitation..."

And then:

"...How can you explain the way the leaders of the world's preeminent military power were chased through the night by Iraq's unexpected set of rebellions and its no-name resistance? How quickly -- though, unfortunately, not quickly enough -- their various elaborate tales and lies, their manipulated intelligence and cherry-picked stories of Iraqi WMD and Saddam's nefarious links to al-Qaeda were dismantled -- a process that has yet to end..."

Now Jean, honest, didn't you let go that little sigh of accomplishment in reading this?

Although as Tom wrote, there still is a long way to go along this line, and the ancient Chinese philosophers advised: "When after overcoming a dangerous situation you feel you are finally safe, keep yourself watchful, crying: We may perish, we may perish! until you are really sure that the peril is through".

From far down South,

Bush Impeachment - The Illinois State Legislature is Preparing to Drop a Bombshell

Utilizing a little known rule of the US House to bring Impeachment charges

Steven Leser

The Illinois General Assembly is about to rock the nation. Members of state legislatures are normally not considered as having the ability to decide issues with a massive impact to the nation as a whole. Representative Karen A. Yarbrough of Illinois' 7th District is about to shatter that perception forever. Representative Yarbrough stumbled on a little known and never utlitized rule of the US House of Representatives, Section 603 of Jefferson's Manual of the Rules of the United States House of Representatives, which allows federal impeachment proceedings to be initiated by joint resolution of a state legislature. From there, Illinois House Joint Resolution 125 (hereafter to be referred to as HJR0125) was born.

Detailing five specific charges against President Bush including one that is specified to be a felony, the complete text of HJR0125 is copied below at the end of this article. One of the interesting points is that one of the items, the one specified as a felony, that the NSA was directed by the President to spy on American citizens without warrant, is not in dispute. That fact should prove an interesting dilemma for a Republican controlled US House that clearly is not only loathe to initiate impeachment proceedings, but does not even want to thoroughly investigate any of the five items brought up by the Illinois Assembly as high crimes and/or misdemeanors. Should HJR0125 be passed by the Illinois General Assembly, the US House will be forced by House Rules to take up the issue of impeachment as a privileged bill, meaning it will take precedence over other House business.

The Illinois General Assembly joins a growing chorus of voices calling for censure or impeachment of President Bush including Democratic state committees in Vermont, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Nevada and North Carolina as well as the residents themselves of seven towns in Vermont, seventy Vermont state legislators and Congressman John Conyers. The call for impeachment is starting to grow well beyond what could be considered a fringe movement. An ABC News/Washington Post Poll Conducted April 6-9 showed that 33% of Americans currently support Impeaching President Bush, coincidentally, only a similar amount supported impeaching Nixon at the start of the Watergate investigation. If and when Illinois HJR0125 hits the capitol and the individual charges are publicly investigated, that number is likely to grow rapidly. Combined with the very real likelihood that Rove is about to be indicted in the LeakGate investigation, and Bush is in real trouble beyond his plummeting poll numbers. His cronies in the Republican dominated congress will probably save him from the embarassment of an impeachment conviction, for now, but his Presidency will be all but finished.

California Becomes Second State to Introduce Bush Impeachment

April 24, 2006

Joining Illinois, California has become the second state in which a proposal to impeach President Bush has been introduced in the state legislature. And this one includes Cheney as well.

California Assemblyman Paul Koretz of Los Angeles (where the LA Times has now called for Cheney's resignation) has submitted amendments to Assembly Joint Resolution No. 39, calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney. The amendments reference Section 603 of Jefferson's Manual of the Rules of the United States House of Representatives, which allows federal impeachment proceedings to be initiated by joint resolution of a state legislature.

The resolution, in the words of Koretz's press release, "bases the call for impeachment upon the Bush Administration intentionally misleading the Congress and the American people regarding the threat from Iraq in order to justify an unnecessary war that has cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives and casualties; exceeding constitutional authority to wage war by invading Iraq; exceeding constitutional authority by Federalizing the National Guard; conspiring to torture prisoners in violation of the 'Federal Torture Act' and indicating intent to continue such actions; spying on American citizens in violation of the 1978 Foreign Agency Surveillance Act; leaking and covering up the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson, and holding American citizens without charge or trial."

Koretz submitted amendments gutting AJR No. 39, a resolution unrelated to impeachment, to the Assembly Rules Committee. The Rules Committee may take up the bill this week for referral, allowing him to formally introduce the amended resolution.

AJR 39 is a bill introduced in January by Koretz calling for a moratorium on depleted uranium:

"At both the state and national levels," Koretz said, "we will be paying for the Bush Administration's illegal actions and terrible lack of judgment and competence for decades—not only in the billions of dollars wasted on the war and welfare for the rich, but in the worldwide loss of respect for America and Americans. Bush and Cheney must be impeached and removed from office before they undertake even deadlier misdeeds, such as the use of nuclear weapons. There are no bounds to their willingness to ignore the Constitution and world opinion—we can't afford to wait for the next disaster and hope that we can survive it."

Neil Young's protest album heads to Internet first

April 22, 2006

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Neil Young's newly recorded protest album "Living With War," including a song calling for the impeachment of U.S. President George W. Bush, will be posted for free Internet streaming next week, his label said on Friday.

Starting April 28, fans can log onto Young's Web site, , and listen to the 10-track collection in its entirety, free of charge, said Bill Bentley, a spokesman for Warner Music Group's Reprise Records.

The album will first become commercially available as a digital download beginning May 2, "and we plan to get it into retail stores as soon after that as we can get them manufactured," Bentley said.

He said the label anticipates getting the album into retail outlets between May 5 and May 15. "Neil wants this album out there as soon as possible," Bentley added.

The Canadian-born Young, 60, who has tackled social and political themes through four decades as a singer-songwriter, wrote and recorded his latest studio offering over a two-week period this month, backed by a 100-member choir, according to his long-time manager, Elliot Roberts.

Much of the album conveys a sense of outrage, vowing repeatedly in the title track "to never kill again," mocking Bush's conduct of the Iraq war in "Shock and Awe" and calling for his removal from office in a provocative song titled "Let's Impeach the President."

The album also strikes a chord of empathy with soldiers separated from their families, and features lyrics ridiculing America's consumer culture, political corruption and religious fundamentalism.

Juxtaposed to "Let's Impeach the President" is one of the album's more hopeful selections, "Lookin' for a Leader," with such lyrics as: "Someone walks among us ... and I hope he hears the call. And maybe it's a woman, or a black man after all."

The album closes with an a capella version of "America the Beautiful."

Young, who voiced support for Bush's efforts to expand law-enforcement powers in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, acknowledged in published remarks on Friday the provocative nature of his latest work.

"You're always going to rub someone the wrong way when you sing, 'let's impeach the president,'" he told the Los Angeles Times. "But that's what this country's all about -- being able to express your views."

Young's new set comes just seven months after the release of his last album, "Prairie Wind," which has sold about 450,000 U.S. copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

U.S. Planes Are Already Making Practice Bombing Runs Along Iran's Borders

By Chris Floyd

April 22, 2006

Twelve hours. One circuit of the sun from horizon to horizon, one course of the moon from dusk to dawn. What was once a natural measurement for the daily round of human life is now a doom-laden interval between the voicing of an autocrat's brutal whim and the infliction of mass annihilation halfway around the world.

Twelve hours is the maximum time necessary for American bombers to gear up and launch an unprovoked sneak attack -- a Pearl Harbor in reverse -- against Iran, The Washington Post reports. The plan for this "global strike," which includes a very viable "nuclear option," was approved months ago and is now in operation. The planes are already on continuous alert, making "nuclear delivery" practice runs along the Iranian border, The New Yorker reports, and waiting only for the signal from President George W. Bush to drop their payloads of conventional and nuclear weapons on some 400 targets throughout the condemned land.

And when this attack comes -- either as a stand-alone "knock-out blow" or as the precursor to a full-scale, regime-changing invasion, like the earlier aggression in Iraq -- there will be no warning, no declaration of war, no congressional hearings, no public debate. The already-issued orders governing the operation put the decision solely in the hands of the president. He picks up the phone, he says, "Go," and in 12 hours' time, up to 1 million Iranians will be dead.

This potential death toll is not pacifist hyperbole; it comes from a National Academy of Sciences study sponsored by the Pentagon itself, as The Progressive reports. The NAS study calculated the kill rate from "bunker-busting" tactical nukes used to take out underground facilities -- such as those housing much of Iran's nuclear power program. Another simulation using Pentagon software was even more specific, measuring the aftermath from a "limited" nuclear attack on the main Iranian underground site in Esfahan. The result? Three million people killed by radiation in just two weeks. Bush now has about 50 nuclear "earth-penetrating weapons" at his disposal.

Nor is the idea of a nuclear strike on Iran mere "liberal paranoia." Bush himself has made the use of nuclear weapons a centerpiece of his "National Security Strategy of the United States," issued last month, The Progressive notes. While reaffirming the criminal principle of "pre-emptive" attacks on perceived enemies who may or may not be threatening America with weapons they may or may not possess, Bush declared that "safe, credible and reliable nuclear forces continue to play a critical role" in the "offensive strike systems" that are now a key part of America's "deterrence."

In the depraved jargon of atomic warmongering, a "credible" nuclear force is one that can and will be used in the course of ordinary military operations. It is no longer to be regarded as a sacred taboo. This has long been the dream of the Pentagon's nuclear priesthood and its acolytes, going back to the days of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For decades, a strong faction within the U.S. power structure has been afflicted with a perverted craving to unleash these weapons once more. An almost sexual frustration can be discerned in their laments as time and again, in crisis after crisis, their counsels for "going nuclear" were rejected -- often at the very last moment. They have relentlessly demonized an ever-changing array of "enemies," painting each one as an imminent, overwhelming threat, led by "madmen" in thrall to pure evil, impervious to reason, fit only for destruction. Evidence for the threat is exaggerated, manipulated, even manufactured; this ritual cycle has been enacted over and over, leading to many wars but never to that ultimate, orgasmic release.

Now this paranoid sect has at last seized the commanding heights of power. Two of its most venerable and faithful adherents are central players in the court of the Crawford Caligula: Vice President Dick Cheney and Pentagon warlord Donald Rumsfeld, and they've found an eager disciple in the peevish dullard strutting in the Oval Office. Under their tutelage, Bush has eviscerated 40 years' worth of arms control treaties; officially "normalized" the use of nuclear weapons, even against non-nuclear states; and rewarded outlaw proliferators like India, Israel and Pakistan. Now, he is destroying the last, most effective restraint on the spread of nuclear weapons: the Nonproliferation Treaty.

The treaty guarantees its signatories, such as Iran, the right to establish nuclear power programs in exchange for rigorous international inspections. But Bush has arbitrarily decided that Iran -- whose nuclear program has been subjected to perhaps the most extensive inspection process in history -- must end its lawful activities. Why? Because the country is led by "madmen" in thrall to pure evil, impervious to reason, who one day may or may not threaten America with weapons they may or may not have.

So the treaty is dead. Like the Geneva Conventions and the U.S. Constitution, it now means only what Bush says it means. Force of arms, not rule of law, is the new world order. The attack on Iran is coming. And Bush insists that the nuclear option remain in the war plans, despite resistance from top military officers, The New Yorker reports. The obvious, murderous insanity of such a move in no way precludes its implementation by this gang -- as their invasion of Iraq clearly shows.

The nuclear sectarians have waited decades for this moment. Such a chance may never come again. Will they let it pass, when with just a word, in just 12 hours, they can see their god rising in a pillar of fire over Persia?

US threats against Iran—the specter of nuclear barbarism (13 April 2006)
The revelation that the United States government has conducted advanced planning and preparation for a bombing campaign against Iran that includes the possible use of nuclear weapons represents the most serious threat posed in an increasingly unstable international situation. US imperialism has embarked upon a trajectory that will, if not stopped, lead to a world historic catastrophe that will make World War II pale by comparison. That such an act could even be contemplated by the Bush White House should stun and horrify all those who are concerned with the fate of the world and the future of humanity. Little more than six decades after US imperialism carried out the first atomic bombings against Hiroshima and Nagasaki—inflicting horrors that generations since have vowed must never be repeated—Washington is actively considering the use of such terrible weapons once again, this time without provocation or even credible proof of a future threat. Such an act would have the effect of criminalizing America as a country and a society. CLIP

Former German Minister Says Building 7 Used To Run 9/11 Attack

Guide the planes in, then destroy the crime scene

Paul Joseph Watson & Alex Jones/Prison

April 21 2006

Former Helmut Schmidt cabinet member, 25-year German Parliamentarian and global intelligence expert Andreas Von Bülow says that the 9/11 attack was run by the highest levels of the US intelligence apparatus using WTC Building 7 as a command bunker which was later demolished in order to destroy the crime scene.

Speaking to The Alex Jones Show on the GCN Radio Network, Von Bülow said that "the official story is so wrong, it must be an inside job."

Von Bülow discussed the special software programs that allow the CIA to track suspicious stock market movements in real time. Record put options placed on United and American Airlines in the week before 9/11, a speculation that the stock would crash, clearly indicated inside foreknowledge of the impending attack.

"If the stock market has very strange movements immediately they take care of this and they had a lot of tapes and the lawyers told the people destroy these tapes."

"The Bush administration is in a deep defensive [mode] and probably they would like to come out with a new offensive," said Von Bülow as he considered whether a new staged false flag terror attack could be launched to further an interventionist agenda.

"I would hope that one 'new Pearl Harbor' is enough," said Von Bülow, "but I cannot be sure."

Von Bülow commented on the disputed identities of the named hijackers.

"The names of these nineteen [hijackers] never came up in the official passenger list, until now there's no proof they were on the planes."

Von Bülow also pointed out how the alleged hijacker's flight instructors told investigators that they couldn't even fly Cessna's, never mind complex large commercial airliners.

Von Bülow also touched upon the implausible collapse of the buildings.

"The towers came down in the velocity of free fall which is totally impossible, they fall down in 8, 9, or 10 seconds, the pancake theory is ridiculous," he said.

Von Bülow also highlighted the fact that there were 67 successful intercepts of errant aircraft in the year of 2001 before 9/11 and yet four planes were allowed to veer wildly off course without any being intercepted on that one day.

Rudolph Giuliani opened a $13 million emergency Command Center (pictured) on the 23rd floor of World Trade Center Building 7 in June 1999 in part to respond to and manage terrorist attacks.

Von Bülow referenced the command bunker in Building 7, calling it the "optimal place" to run the attacks using remote control technology to guide the planes in and then destroying the crime scene by imploding the building.

"There were two procedures, one was flying in the aircraft the second was the explosions," he said.

When asked precisely which parties carried out the attack Von Bülow said it must have been a "very small group" within the CIA with the help of Saudi Arabian and Pakistani secret service intelligence.

Von Bülow outlined his view that one reason for the execution of 9/11 was to provide the justification for US military bases in the near and Middle East to be built in anticipation for a future confrontation with China, whom the Neo-Cons believe have grown too powerful and need to have their geopolitical wings clipped.

Evidence of Thermite on Core Columns at WTC *PIC* (21 April 2006);read=87932
In Response To: The White Flames of Thermite at the WTC *PIC* There is substantial evidence that thermite was used to cut the central support columns, which caused the towers to fall. Evidence can be seen on photographs of the columns from the rubble of the World Trade Center. In this photo, for example, the column directly above the fireman's helmet shows that it was cut with thermite. There is a substantial amount of hardened molten iron which can be seen on both the inside and outside of the box column. This is precisely what one would expect to find on a column which had been cut with thermite. Experts who have viewed this photograph say that this column was not cut with a torch. (MORE DETAILS AND PICS THROUGH THE Articles In This Thread AT THE BOTTOM)

If you google Marvin Bush ( ) you will be astounded at facts like: the Bush family, including Marvin and some uncles, cousins and others had powerful positions in the company that provided security to the WTC (The WTC's power was shut off the weekend before 9/11, including all cameras, under the excuse of having to do some work. But what a great opportunity to plant charges for the controlled demolition that was to come the following Monday, without being caught on cameras doing it), Dulles Airport, United Airlines, etc. that company - Securacom / Stratesec - had heavy Kuwaiti financial backing. An employee of Marvin Bush was mysteriously killed after 9/11, Marvin resurfaced as a director of the company that insured WTC. Recommended by Sanford Pass>

The True Picture of World Oil Reserves

"Keep in mind there are fueless energy technologies and no shortage of oil, just a shortage of integrity and an abundance of greed."

Karl W B Schwarz> wrote:

This email will come as a shock to those aficionados of Peak Oil. There is no shortage of oil, just a shortage of truth coming from the people who are so greedy they cannot get out of the stuck-on- stupid mode.

Back in December I sent out an email update that reduced 9-11 down to three simple issues. Quoting from that email:

"For those interested in the underlying reasons we have invaded Iraq, the document available at that link and the two books Neoconned and Neoconned Again will give you the information needed to understand the bigger picture. My book One-Way Ticket to Crawford, Texas provides even more background and proof that the true terrorists and the true enemies of Americans are the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee and their wealthy elite masters.

It is really quite simple:

· The U.S. goal of remaining the only military Superpower with even regional powers eliminated; and
· The U.S. insistence that all oil sales will be in petro-dollars, not the Euro; and
· The U.S. intent to dominate the world oil and gas supplies because that will ensure that oil sales will remain denominated in dollars, not Euro. Whomever controls the oil and gas can control entire economies by denying energy supplies.

The US policy of growing our economy by increasing the National Debt would not be possible if the Euro becomes the world's trading currency for oil. Hence, Iran and Venezuela are terrorists since they intend to trade in Euros. Saddam saw that even the UN Oil for Food program to Iraq was run through France and denominated in Euros. If the Euro becomes the oil trade currency our economy would melt down in a year or less."

I look at 9-11 as merely a means to implement policies that Americans would not have otherwise endorsed. It really is that simple. Before 9-11 there is not a single thing George W. Bush could have said or done to get Americans riled up enough to attack Afghanistan. It was a 'Pearl Harbor' event, so Americans would support the war and go back to not paying attention to what our government and major corporations are really up to.

BOO! They want Americans to remain very afraid and looking to the Neocons for protection.

Wake up — your life and your future are being plundered!

Note that they still have not said a word about Bridas Corporation. No one has written more about that than I have and I will continue to point to that hidden reason and hidden agenda. Bridas Corporation was years ahead of US oil companies in controlling that vast supply of oil in the former USSR by controlling the pipeline access to get it to the oceans. The Clinton Administration and the Bush Administration beat up on Bridas Corporation for many years before 9-11 happened to block them from succeeding.

Bridas Corporation did not win $500 million in a US Court of Appeals based on some arcane principle. They won because they proved massive amounts of interference in contracts towards what they already had agreements on.

That is one of the primary reasons that South America, especially Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela, are rejecting US policies that attempt to dominate them. Bad policies do not sell well and DC has become nothing but bad policies over the past three presidential administrations. Our presidents do not serve the American people, they serve commerce, the Wealthy Elite and major corporate interests.

I look at the Depleted Uranium matter in its simplest terms as being an incredibly inhumane byproduct of our idiotic policies. They know it is deadly and have known since the 1940s, yet they expose people to it and then ignore what they have done. They really could not care less how many they kill with DU. It is a means to de-populate and get rid of useless eaters, to quote Henry Kissinger.

Those resources belong to the Wealthy Elite! Did you not get the memo?

In another email update in November, I disclosed a little known report that shows that Venezuela may well be sitting on the single largest oil reserve in the world at a whopping 4 trillion barrels of heavy crude oil. That trading in Euros is scary indeed, but it is the policies of our government that has undermined the value of the US dollar and made that happen so they must go after any Euro-Terrorist.

Saddam Hussein traded in Euros and look at what they wrought. Iran is trading in Euros and even opening up an Oil Bourse to trade in Euros. Watch the disinformation from DC. Venezuela is trading in Euros so that makes him a terrorist too. Hugo Chavez might even make DC have to change their style of robbing you and me.

Venezuela, according to some arcane reports, sits on four trillion barrels of heavy crude. That is not a typo. Venezuela has reported reserves of FOUR TRILLION barrels of oil.

Figure 1 — A Different view of world oil supplies

The Bush Administration launched a war to take over the Caspian Basin, that contains oil reserves estimated at a mere 200 billion barrels, or a thirty-year supply of oil. That war was to take over the country with a pipeline that is needed to get crude oil to the ocean ports, where it can be shipped to refineries abroad. An upcoming email update addresses all of the facts surrounding those matters.

If this report is accurate, Venezuela alone has roughly four times the amount of oil in all of the Middle East. You can see what our policies about that oil have done in the way of insane policies from our government.

The following map (see at is British Petroleum's version of oil reserves and note the huge difference stated for South America.

Figure 2 — British Petroleum statement of World Oil Reserves

You might have heard of the Peak Oil theory developed by scientists and analysts in government and the oil industry. Mike Ruppert discusses these ideas in his book Crossing the Rubicon. Peak Oil might have plausible arguments to support it, but there are many vested interests that want us to think that prices have to escalate because the world's oil supply is too small in comparison with demand. That is somewhat akin to using a stock tout to change the price of something that should not be changing except that some vested interests want it to change so they can charge more for it.

I have seen clear evidence that talk of terrorism is a device used to create an artificial spook in the oil markets and to drive up the price of oil further. Every "Orange Alert" pushed up the price and every one of those alerts proved to be questionable. Even Tom Ridge stated publicly after he left the Bush Administration that he was pressured to raise the terror alert level.

The Peak Oil theory might be a myth created to drive up the price of oil and gas, and here is why I state it that way.

Another factor that might be driving the "synthetic belligerence" towards Chavez is that he and the People's Republic of China [PRC] recently entered into long term agreements for Venezuela to supply oil to the PRC. They have even made arrangements to build a pipeline from Venezuela to the west coast of Panama to facilitate shipping of the oil in tankers too large to go through the Panama Canal. The financing deal on that pipeline was done about six months ago by someone that I know personally. If Bush, Cheney and the oil companies that pull their strings truly are trying to dominate and control the world's petroleum supplies, that "unpardonable sin" by Chavez might be all the reason they needed to try to take over Venezuela, assassinate Chavez as suggested by Pat Robertson, or otherwise try to punish Venezuela for not playing along. Venezuela is one of the few countries denominating their sales of oil in the Euro and that 4 trillion barrels of oil denominated to the Euro is bad news for DC. They would have to exercise fiscal sanity and sane fiscal policy for a change and that means their buddies cannot steal as much from the US Treasury in the future. You can imagine how desperate they are to maintain that status quo.

It is definitely something worth thinking about and holding our leaders accountable for, since they seem to think that everything has to be so secret.

Of course they want us to think that the Middle East is so valuable and strategic. It is not. It is just strategic to the Zionists and our oil companies. Making the Middle East so strategic is consistent with their policies.

The reason for this email is what follows. Meria Heller ( ) sent this to me and asked what I thought about it. I gave her the short answer and this email is the long answer.

U.S. Oil Discovery- Largest Reserve in the World! Stansberry Report Online 4/20/2006

Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the largest untapped oil reserve in the world — more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush mandated its extraction. Three companies have been chosen to lead the way. Test drilling has already begun. Five months ago, the U.S. Energy Department announced the results of a land survey. They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our borders, than all the other proven reserves on earth. Here are the official estimates: 8-times as much oil as Saudi : Arabia 18-times as much oil as Iraq 21-times as much oil as : Kuwait 22-times as much oil as Iran 500-times as much oil : as Yemen. And it's all right here in the Western United : States. James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says, "We've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East." More than 2 TRILLION barrels. Untapped. "That's more than all the proven oil reserves of crude oil in the world today," reports The Denver Post. When asked about America's least-publicized oil supply, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch said: "The amounts of oil are staggering. Who would have guessed that in just Colorado and Utah, there is more recoverable oil than in the Middle East?" Three million barrels of oil per day. That translates into more than $20 BILLION a year. These are the conservative estimates. The U.S. Energy Dept. estimates an eventual output of 10 million barrels of oil per day. At that rate, the money flow would be even greater.

It is a safe bet that they discovered this oil years ago and are just now getting around to telling us about it. There were policies they wanted to put into play, like taking over the Caspian Basin oil so Russia and the PRC would not be able to use that 200 billion barrels against us as an economic weapon. As most know now, Bush planned to take over Iraq in his first Cabinet meeting. The 20 Year War Plan identified over 20 nations to take over, and each having vast supplies of oil and gas.

As far back as the George H W Bush Administration they planned to take over the Caspian Basin in Operation Steppe Shield. The 20 Year War Plan desired by the Neocons and Zionists, and Big Defense, Big Banks and Big Oil was concocted under the Clinton Administration.

You see, if one controls the energy they can control national economies of other countries. They can even control and crush us as they are doing now with high gasoline and energy prices.

Sooner or later, in savior fashion, they will tell you about the vast pools of oil under the Ouachita Mountains in West Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma that are down about 30,000 to 35,000 feet and has been known about for over 20 years.

The oil crisis is a fraud folks. It is all about control and US domination of world commerce through military might and control of the majority of oil and natural gas.

They are using terrorism and other artificial means to pump up the prices and rip money out of your pocket and out of the economy. It is greed running rampant and a government in DC that sees nothing wrong with that since those huge campaign donations will keep flowing in.

All a politician has to do is support certain policies and they are assured of massive money for their continued stay in office.

Our government and our oil companies are at this very time waging economic warfare against the American people and it is time to show them the door and put a stop to it. This is an election year — do not for your own sake send a single incumbent back to Washington, DC.

Best regards,

The Next American Oil Boom

by Matt Badiali

There’s a new source of oil in the American West.

Today, this gigantic oil deposit sits idle — untapped — inside more than 16,000 square miles of a special kind of rock under Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah.

There’s an interesting story about this rock. It’s about a cowboy who spent all summer building a cabin for the winter. He chinked the cracks with mud and built a big fireplace out of local stone. The first cold night, he built a roaring fire, and the stones of his fireplace burned down the cabin!

The cowboy built his fireplace out of oil shale… Oil shale is full of kerogen, which is like immature oil. You can’t blame the old cowboy… at first glance, oil shale looks like an ordinary black rock.  It feels grainy to the touch and… greasy. But as he found out the hard way, oil shale is full of crude oil…

And although you don’t hear much about oil shale, this form of “unconventional oil” has the potential to be one of America’s major sources of petroleum for the next few generations.

I’m writing to you today because knowing how to invest in oil shale could make you great returns in the next few years. But first, let’s go over a quick history of oil shale.

The first recorded use of oil shale in America is by the Ute Indians, as they described it as “a rock that burns.”

In the U.S., oil shale begins to look attractive every time conventional oil gets expensive. In the 1850’s, early oil shale entrepreneurs were upstaged by the first oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania. After all, why mess with squeezing oil from rocks if the stuff will gush from a hole in the ground?

In the 1940s, renewed interest in oil shale was crushed by the unlimited potential of nuclear energy and the discovery of huge oil fields in the Middle East…

As a result of the price spikes of the 70s, oil shale became a serious business among the majors… modern-day boomtowns sprung up as a result of renewed oil shale interest. But as booms and busts go, the price of oil dropped soon after, and by 1991, the last major company pulled out, with no return to show for the massive amount of capital spent.

There’s a good reason people keep returning to the oil shale deposits… The reason?

This area - the Green River Formation - contains 2 trillion barrels of oil.

It can be difficult to imagine such massive amounts of oil. Below, I’ve included a page of the Energy Department’s report that puts those reserves in perspective… and the money that can be made.

(See the Table at

As you can see from the table, you could even add together all the oil in the Middle East — and our reserves would still come out on top — 3-TIMES LARGER.

When asked about America’s least-publicized oil supply, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch said:

“The amounts of oil are staggering. Who would have guessed that in just Colorado and Utah, there is more recoverable oil than in the Middle East?”

This past January, the government proceeded with the next step in the process. Three companies were each given 160 acres of the government's oil-rich land.

The company with the cheapest, most environmentally sound drilling method will be granted full access to the government's oil mother lode.

Combine all this with stubbornly high oil prices, and a new American oil shale boom may be on.

Good Investing

P.S. I’ve spent every day of the past three months researching every possible way to make money with the massive U.S. oil shale supply.

I’ve just finished compiling an in-depth research report detailing everything you need to know...

Oil shale (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Oil shale is a general term applied to a group of fine black to dark brown shales rich enough in organic material (called kerogen) to yield petroleum upon distillation. The kerogen in oil shale can be converted to oil through the chemical process of pyrolysis. During pyrolysis the oil shale is heated to 450–500 °C in the absence of air and the kerogen is converted to oil and separated out, a process called "retorting". Oil shale has also been burnt directly as a low-grade fuel. The United States Office of Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves estimates the world supply of oil shale at 1.6 trillion barrels of which 1–1.2 trillion barrels are in the United States [1]. This is comparable to the amount of remaining conventional oil reserves. Estonia, Russia, Brazil, and China currently mine oil shale, however production is declining due to economic and environmental factors. (...) Estimates vary as to how many barrels of oil are contained in oil shale reserves. The US Office of Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves estimates there are some 1.6 trillion barrels of oil contained in oil shales around the world, with 60–70% of reserves (1.0–1.2 trillion barrels) in the United States. Most US oil shale is concentrated in the Green River Formation in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. These oil shale resources underlie a total area of 16,000 square miles (40,000 km).

(...) ECONOMICS - Below forty dollars a barrel, oil-shale oil is not competitive with conventional crude oil. If the price of oil were to stay permanently over forty dollars a barrel (with no chance of declining, which could be the case if oil shale were to be exploited on a large enough scale), then companies would exploit oil shale. Generally, the oil shale has to be mined, transported, retorted, and then disposed of, so at least 40% of the energy value is consumed in production. Water is also needed to add hydrogen to the oil-shale oil before it can be shipped to a conventional oil refinery. The largest deposit of oil shale in the United States is in western Colorado (the Green River Shale deposits), a dry region with no surplus water. The oil shale can be ground into a slurry and transported via pipeline to a more suitable pre-refining location. During the oil crisis of the 1970s, people thought that oil supplies were peaking, expected oil prices to be around seventy dollars a barrel for some time to come, and invested huge amounts of money in refining oil shale — money that they lost. Because of the astronomical sums that were lost last time around there is considerable reluctance to invest in oil shale this time around. Investors are waiting to see if oil prices really will remain this high (in April 2006: US$75). Prices are rising because of increased demand in rapidly developing countries, particularly China. Will high prices result in the discovery of more oil, as happened in the seventies, or will alternatives to drilling for oil have to be developed? Investors, burnt badly in the 1980s for their enthusiasm of the seventies, are in no hurry to develop oil shale. Those who lost money then are inclined to believe that more oil will be found by and by.

In 2005, Royal Dutch Shell announced that its in-situ extraction technology could be competitive at prices over $30/bbl [2]. A critical measure of the viability of oil shale is the ratio of energy used to produce the oil, compared to the energy returned (Energy Returned on Energy Invested - EROEI). Oil shale typically has a very low EROEI - Royal Dutch Shell reported a figure of about 3, one barrel of oil used for every three gained, on its recent in-situ development - Mahogany Research Project. This compares to a figure of typically 20 to 100 for conventional oil extraction. China is challenged severely by high oil prices. The Chinese government has sponsored a project to extract oil from shale.

Environmental considerations - Surface-mining of oil shale deposits has all the normal environmental effects from open-pit mining. In addition, the pre-refining process to obtain crude oil generates ash, and the waste rock (a known carcinogen) must be disposed of. Oil shale rock expands by around 30% after processing due to a popcorn effect from the heating; this waste then needs disposal. Oil shale processing also requires water, which may be in short supply. The energy demands of blasting, transporting, crushing, heating the material, and then adding hydrogen, together with the safe disposal of huge quantities of waste material, are large. These inefficiencies, plus the cost of environmental restoration, mean that oil shale exploitation will only be economical when oil prices are high (and projected to remain so). Currently, the in-situ process is the most attractive proposition due to the reduction in standard surface environmental problems. However, in-situ processes do involve possible significant environmental costs to aquifers. Especially since current in-situ methods may require ice-capping or some other form of barrier to restrict the flow of the newly gained oil into the groundwater aquifers. Current extraction methods produce four times as much greenhouse gas as does conventional oil production.

U.S. Prepares 'Super Base' in Iraq

Despite all the political debate in Washington about a quick U.S. pullout from Iraq, the vast Balad Air Base, a 15-square-mile mini-city of thousands of trailers and vehicle depots located 43 miles north of Baghdad, is hard evidence that the Pentagon is planning to stay in Iraq for a long time - at least a decade or so, according to military strategists.

With 27,500 landings and takeoffs a month, Balad is second only to London's Heathrow Airport in traffic worldwide, Brig. Gen. Frank Gorenc, the base commander, tells Newsweek Senior Editor Michael Hirsh in the current issue.

In an interview with Newsweek, Gorenc said he's "normalizing" the giant Balad airfield, or gradually rebuilding it to U.S. military specs. The Saddam-era concrete is considered too substandard for the F-16s, C-130s and other aircraft that fly in and out so regularly they crack the tarmac.

"It's safe to say Balad will be here for a long time," says Gorenc, who feels at home in Iraqi skies, where the Air Force has been having its way since the first gulf war. "One of the issues of sovereignty for any country is the ability to control their own airspace. We will probably be helping the Iraqis with that problem for a very long time."

Hirsh reports that the Balad Air Base is an image of what America's long-term plans for Iraq look like. It's one of four "superbases" where the Pentagon plans to consolidate U.S. forces, taking them gradually from the front lines of the Iraq war. (Two other bases are slated for the British and Iraqi military.)

The shift is part of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's plan to draw down U.S. ground forces in Iraq significantly by the end of 2006. Sovereignty issues still need to be worked out by mutual, legal agreement. But even as Iraqi politicians settle on a new government after four months of stalemate-on Saturday, they named a new prime minister, Jawad al-Maliki-they are welcoming the long-term U.S. presence, Hirsh reports in the May 1 issue of Newsweek.

There is ample evidence elsewhere of America's long-term plans. The new $592 million U.S. embassy being built at the heart of Baghdad's "international zone" is "massive ... the largest embassy to date," says Maj. Gen. Chuck Williams, head of the State Department's Overseas Building Operations office. In an interview with Newsweek, Williams called it the "most ambitious project" his office has undertaken in its history.

Officials in both the executive branch and Congress say they are unaware of any serious planning, or even talk inside the national-security bureaucracy, about a full withdrawal.

Sectarian conflict here has worsened in recent months, outstripping the anti-American insurgency in significance, and many Iraqis know there is no alternative to U.S. troops for the foreseeable future. "I think the presence of the American forces can be seen as an insurance policy for the unity of Iraq," says national-security adviser Mowaffaq al-Rubaie.

U.S. officials routinely deny that America intends to put down permanent bases.

"A key planning factor in our basing strategy is that there will be no bases in Iraq following Operation Iraqi Freedom," says Lt. Col. Barry Johnson, a spokesman for CENTCOM in Baghdad. "What we have in Iraq are 'contingency bases,' intended to support our operations in Iraq on a temporary basis until OIF is complete."

But according to the Congressional Research Service, the Bush administration has asked for more than $1.1 billion for new military construction in Iraq, roughly double what it plans to spend in Kuwait, Qatar and United Arab Emirates combined. Of that, the single biggest share is intended for Balad ($231 million).

Technically Colonel Johnson may be telling the truth about the Pentagon's long-term plans. But it is also true that the U.S. government has never drawn up plans for "permanent" military bases, even when it ended up staying for half a century. In Korea, where tens of thousands of U.S. soldiers have been deployed for 55 years since the end of the Korean War, "they're only just now moving American troops out of temporary facilities like huts to real buildings," says John Pike, a Washington security expert.

A White House official, asked last week about long-term U.S. plans, himself made the analogy to Asia and to Germany. In every conflict the United States has recently been involved in, except Vietnam, U.S. forces have remained in the country, said the official, who asked for anonymity because the matter is considered sensitive.

Iran Completes Secret Uranium Plant

Kenneth R. Timmerman,

April 21, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Just when the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) thought it had its hands around the Iranian nuclear program, NewsMax has learned from intelligence sources that Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps is completing a secret, underground uranium enrichment plant that should begin operating in October 2006.

Work on the new plant, located 50 miles outside the northeastern Iranian city of Mashad, was begun with help from Russian engineers in 2003, Iranian intelligence sources said.

The facility has been built 150 meters below ground in a rugged highlands valley some 38 kilometers southeast of the city of Nishabour. The nearest inhabited area is a town named Homa.

A large agricultural center was constructed overhead to disguise the existence of the buried plant, the sources said. A similar disguise was initially used to hide the existence of the Natanz uranium enrichment plant to the southwest of Tehran, before a foreign government revealed its existence to the IAEA.

Over the last seven months, according to former Iranian army military analyst Homayoun Moghaddam, now exiled in Europe, scientists and technicians from Belarus and Ukraine have been working on site to prepare the new facility to accommodate 155,000 P1 and P2 uranium enrichment centrifuges.

He said the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Department, which is in charge of the facility, refers to it as the Shahid Moradian center, and that 850 Iranian scientists and technicians are currently working there, along with 85 experts from Belarus and Ukraine.

Their goal is to enrich enough uranium to build at least nine nuclear weapons per year, and to keep the site secret for the next three years, Moghaddam said.

The IAEA has verified previously clandestine production in Iran of the P1 centrifuge, an older design copied by Pakistan from plans acquired in Europe in the late 1970s by Dr. A.Q. Khan.

Iran announced last week that it had successfully begun enrichment of uranium in a cascade of 164 P1 centrifuges at a pilot plant in Natanz, in defiance of a United Nations Security Council statement calling on Iran to cease all enrichment activities by April 28.

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also announced last week that Iran was now capable of producing the more advanced P2 centrifuge, which is considered more efficient and more reliable than the older P1 design.

Until his announcement, Iranian officials had denied reports that they had imported P2 centrifuges from the A.Q. Khan network and claimed that sample P2 centrifuges found in Iran had been produced experimentally by a private company not working on a government contract. But these latest reports of a completely separate, clandestine enrichment facility near Nishabour, if confirmed, would completely alter the picture the IAEA has constructed of Iran's nuclear infrastructure.

"I would argue that they have a parallel program of some size," said Paul Leventhal, a former U.S. Senate aid and founder of the Nuclear Control Institute, an independent research and advocacy group in Washington, D.C.

Leventhal was debating Iran's nuclear programs on the "NewsHour" program with Jim Lehrer on April 11 before information on the Nishabour facility was made public.

"I would also caution against a grand deception by Iran to play into Western perceptions of Iran as being technologically and industrially backward, and apparently having problems in facilities that they're letting the IAEA into, while, at unknown locations, they are proceeding with all the technological help and technology that money can buy," Leventhal added.

UN officials find evidence of secret uranium enrichment plant (07/04/2006)
United Nations officials investigating Iran's nuclear programme say they have found convincing evidence that the Iranians are working on a secret uranium enrichment project that has not been officially declared.Suspicions were raised after officials from the UN-sponsored International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) travelled to Pakistan at the end of last year to interview A Q Khan, the atomic scientist who masterminded the successful development of Pakistan's nuclear weapons arsenal. Khan is known to have sold Teheran the technical expertise to develop an atomic bomb, together with key components, such as sophisticated equipment for enriching uranium. During the interview with IAEA inspectors, Khan is said to have provided a full disclosure of the nuclear dossier he gave the Iranians. The inspectors compared Khan's material against the documentation the Iranians have so far provided."There are a number of glaring inconsistencies between what the Iranians are telling us and the information the IAEA got from Khan," said a diplomat closely involved in the IAEA's negotiations with Teheran. "Consequently the IAEA inspectors are now convinced that the Iranians have another, small-scale uranium processing and enrichment project that is being kept secret from the outside world." (...) The other discovery that caused consternation for the IAEA was a set of drawings that show the Iranians are attempting to build what has been described as an enriched uranium hemisphere, a construction that is only used in the construction of atomic weapons. Iran refused to hand over the drawings."It all fits into a pattern of behaviour that suggests the Iranians have something to hide," said a senior diplomat attached to the IAEA headquarters in Vienna.

Nuclear Iran Better Than Bush Strike (April 19, 2006)
New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman says that given the choice between a nuclear-armed Iran or a U.S. attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities, right now he would opt for a nuclear Iran."As someone who believed – and still believes – in the importance of getting Iraq right, the level of incompetence that the Bush team has displayed in Iraq, and its refusal to acknowledge any mistakes or remove those who made them, make it impossible to support this administration in any offensive military action against Iran,” Friedman writes. The liberal pundit says a better course of action than an attack would be to keep a nuclear Iran at bay through "deterrence” – making it clear that if Iran uses a nuclear weapon or gives one to terrorists, the United States will destroy all of its nuclear sites with nuclear weapons. Worst Drought in 20 Years Hits East Africa

U.N. Appeals for More Funds and Food to Avert Widespread Starvation

One of the worst droughts in two decades has left many Kenyans without water. Most people rely on weekly water truck deliveries, which they will walk miles to reach. (ABC News)

WAJIR, Kenya, April 20, 2006 — The scrubby grasslands of northeast Kenya have all but turned to dust.

The nomads, who move from place to place to find water and food for their precious cattle, have given up looking for green pastures. The land is dead. It has killed whole herds of cows, and even camels seem to be dying.

The nomads understand that when the cattle die, it's only a matter of time before people die. It's already happening in the most severely affected places. The Horn of Africa is facing its worst drought in two decades, and nearly 6 million people in Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti and Kenya are at risk of dying. In recent days the much-anticipated seasonal rains have arrived in some parts of the region, but it's not nearly enough and in many places the sudden rains have led to flash flooding.

The situation is so dire that British aid agency Oxfam has launched an appeal for $36 million worth of aid. Oxfam workers on the ground in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia warn the death rate in those countries will dramatically increase unless more aid is sent in fast.

"This crises might be getting less attention that the tsunami did," Oxfam director Barbara Stocking said. "But the number of people needing help is even greater, and the severity of this crises means assistance is needed on a huge scale."

Thirsty for Help

It is midday on a vast sun-scorched plain in northeast Kenya. The temperature soars above 100 degrees, and there is no shade. Nearly 300 men, women and a few very thirsty children wait patiently. Barely a word is spoken; they are exhausted.

Most people have spent the night here in the open, and more people arrive, having walked since before dawn to get here. Everyone has come for one thing — water.
For the first time in living memory, the nomads — proud, resilient, independent — have turned to the outside world for help. All they seem to have left are bunches of empty containers.

Nuria, a 41-year-old mother with five children, speaks slowly as she explains how, for the first time in her life, she has been unable to find water on her own.
"If we do not get help from the outside we will surely die," she said.

The lifeline appears as a dust cloud on the horizon — a rickety truck carrying a leaky water tank. It maneuvers into position above a pit lined with yellow plastic sheeting. Within minutes there is a pool of fresh cool water, an oasis in a land that has been turned to desert.

Twice a week, the aid agency Oxfam sends the truck here and to about 30 other places to bring relief to a people hanging on by a thread. At first they move slowly, deliberately, to fill their containers. Then, as the water level begins to drop, the pace quickens and the level of anxiety begins to rise. There is shouting, even one or two scuffles break out.

Dying for More Water and Food

It is easy to understand why, some of these people have been without water for days. They won't get more water until the next truck arrives, which is three days away. The weekly ration per person works out to about two gallons, well below the universally accepted nine gallons per person. But that is all Oxfam can afford right now; it simply doesn't have the funds to bring in more.

"When you see how people are struggling over this water, you just feel desperate to help," said Magdalen Nandula, Oxfam's coordinator in the Wajir district.

"It wouldn't take much," she said. "Just $600 would have paid for another truck to deliver water on this day."

In the end, more than a dozen people walked away with empty containers. Food is also a growing concern.

With so many cattle dead, the nomadic people are running out of sources for nourishment. Malnutrition and starvation loom. The United Nations World Food Program has distributed food for weeks but faces serious funding shortfalls in all countries.

"I don't think the world has appreciated until the last 60 days how serious this is; this is about as bad as it gets," said James Morris, executive director of the U.N. program. He added that in Kenya alone they are short $170 million, and he's desperate for people to take notice.

Stop concentration camps in China

April 20, 2006

The massacre of Tibetans, the Tiananmen Square massacre, the repression of the intellectuals, where does the violence and control, repression of the people of China end?

Who is the next "enemy" of the communist party that is going to be eliminated? Since 1999, a violent persecution, that shows us the Chinese Communist Party is willing to murder good people in order to keep his people in fear and ignorance, towards Falun Gong practitioners has been going on. Thousands of people tortured, put in labor camps, families torn apart, all because they want to practice Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance, the 3 principles of Falun Gong.

Today, information that is being denied by the Communist Party has hit the ears of a lot of people that feel concerned and have the heart not to let pass by such atrocities. This information suggests the existence of a secret concentration camp in Sujiatun where 6000 Falun Gong practitioners are having their organs harvested while they are alive.

This brings back to memories the horrific concentration camps of Auschwitz and Dachau, to which the International community said "Never again!". An independant investigation from the International community must take place in China so that clear and concrete evidence is shown to the world and the perpetrators be brought to justice.

This is an urgent call to the people of the world, with a heart, defending Truth, Compassion and Tolerance, an urgent call upon the International community to initiate rescue programs and help stop this new genocide. Silence is the criminal's accomplice.

Whereas, in March 2006, three independent witnesses revealed that the Chinese communist regime is operating a secret concentration camp specifically for Falun Gong practitioners in the Sujiatun District, Shenyang City, China. Organs are removed from thousands of live bodies and sold for profit. The remains are then cremated to eliminate evidence. No one has ever come out alive!

Whereas, one of the witnesses, a veteran medical doctor who has served in the Shenyang military zone revealed that there are about 36 concentration camps in China with the three largest in the northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning. The largest camp, codenamed "672-S," is said to hold over 120,000 people, mostly Falun Gong practitioners.

Whereas, another witness, a former staff member of the “Liaoning Thrombus Treatment Center of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine” in the Sujiatun District of Shenyang City in Liaoning Province revealed that her husband at the time was a neurosurgeon whose job was to remove corneas of Falun Gong practitioners. "You don't understand my suffering," she recalls him telling her. "Those Falun Gong practitioners were alive. It might be easier for me if they were dead, but they were alive."

Whereas, this explains why there is no waiting list for human organs in the People’s Republic of China, and that one can obtain a fresh organ as fast as in 24-hours in China.

Whereas, the Chinese Communist Party's policy is deaths of Falun Gong practitioners "count as suicide", and many practitioners have been missing in the past few years after they were illegally taken into custody by the authorities. One of them is the sister of Canadian citizen Michelle Zhang. Michelle’s sister, Yunhe Zhang, kidnapped by police over 4 years ago. Nobody has heard from her since. Police stations, labour camps, provincial prisons all deny having kept her or knowing her whereabouts.

Whereas, there have been numerous reports from witnesses and family members that organs were missing from the bodies of practitioners who were tortured to death. Many families only received a box of ashes from the authorities without ever seeing the bodies of their loved ones.

Therefore we submit the following petition:

We, the undersigned, call on the Canadian government to strongly and publicly call for an independent investigation from the international community into these death camps in China and strongly and publicly call for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong.

Going Public About Communist Concentration Camps
Two sources appear in public for the first time to detail organ-harvesting in China (...) The two gave details about organ harvesting in China, particularly in Sujiatun in northeastern China, where 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners were at one time detained. They expressed the importance of coming out publicly in order to provide more credence to their accounts. "Be it the U.S. government or the Chinese government, they have denied the existence of this incident, so it was needed for me to speak out about this," said Annie. The U.S. State Department has said that they made two visits to the hospital in Sujiatun and found no evidence of organ harvesting, but in its April 14 news release, noted that "we remain concerned over China's repression of Falun Gong practitioners. We are also concerned by reports of organ harvesting." The organ harvesting atrocities were first revealed when Peter, then given the alias "Mr. R.," said on March 9 that Falun Gong practitioners were being killed on a large scale for their organs, which would then be sold for profit. Annie, whose ex-husband was a cornea specialist at the Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital, the hospital connected to the Sujiatun camp, gave an interview with The Epoch Times on March 17. She said that her husband had done operations on live Falun Gong practitioners and that the practitioners' bodies were thrown into incinerators after the operations, sometimes while they were still alive. Peter said that the atrocities at Sujiatun were just "the tip of the iceberg." On March 31, The Epoch Times published a report based on information from a military doctor who stated that there were 36 similar camps all over China, and the largest one, codenamed 672-S, holds over 120,000 people. Congress is selling out the Internet

Do you buy books online, use Google, or download to an Ipod? These activities will be hurt if Congress passes a radical law that gives giant corporations more control over the Internet.

Internet providers like AT&T and Verizon are lobbying Congress hard to gut Network Neutrality, the Internet's First Amendment. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more. doesn't have to outbid Barnes & Noble for the right to work more properly on your computer.

Politicians don't think we are paying attention to this issue. Many of them take campaign checks from big telecom companies and are on the verge of selling out to people like AT&T's CEO, who openly says, "The internet can't be free."

The free and open Internet is under seige--can you sign this petition letting your member of Congress know you support preserving Network Neutrality? Click here:

Look Out

by Wendell Berry

Come to the window, look out, and see
the valley turning green in remembrance
of all springs past and to come, the woods
perfecting with immortal patience
the leaves that are the work of all of time,
the sycamore whose white limbs shed
the history of a man's life with their old bark,
the river quivering under the morning's breath
like the touched skin of a horse, and you will see
also the shadow cast upon it by fire, the war
that lights its way by burning the earth.

Come to your windows, people of the world,
look out at whatever you see wherever you are,
and you will see dancing upon it that shadow.
You will see that your place, wherever it is,
your house, your garden, your shop, your forest, your farm,
bears the shadow of its destruction by war
which is the economy of greed which is plunder
which is the economy of wrath which is fire.
The Lords of War sell the earth to buy fire,
they sell the water and air of life to buy fire.
They are little men grown great by willingness
to drive whatever exists into its perfect absence.
Their intention to destroy any place is solidly founded
upon their willingness to destroy every place.

Every household of the world is at their mercy,
the households of the farmer and the otter and the owl
are at their mercy. They have no mercy.
Having hate, they can have no mercy.
Their greed is the hatred of mercy.
Their pockets jingle with the small change of the poor.
Their power is the willingness to destroy
everything for knowledge which is money
which is power which is victory
which is ashes sown by the wind.

Leave your windows and go out, people of the world,
go into the streets, go into the fields, go into the woods
and along the streams. Go together, go alone.
Say no to the Lords of War which is Money
which is Fire. Say no by saying yes
to the air, to the earth, to the trees,
yes to the grasses, to the rivers, to the birds
and the animals and every living thing, yes
to the small houses, yes to the children. Yes.
