The Big Scoop Series #15: Bush Mob Clan Chastised - But the Cabal Thrives

Hello everyone!

How to best introduce this long (over 41,500 words!) compilation touching on so many different topics? Well, first, by dispelling the BIG illusion that the Democrats' victory means any real change, through the following quote from Alex Jones - Taken from 9/11 Truth Is Dying Inside the Liberal and Progressive Movements :

"The talking points of elite sycophants Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean are reverberating across the political spectrum - no impeachment of Bush, no investigation of Iraq and no independent inquiry into 9/11. Establishment phonies who previously railed against Bush are lining up and following orders. Nancy Pelosi again repeated her assertion today that impeachment was "off the table," echoing Howard Dean's comments to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night that, "we're not gonna do that." (...) The proto-dictatorship could never have been put in place without the seminal event of 9/11 and it is imperative that the 9/11 truth movement not be pacified by a sham re-arranging of the deck chairs. We must push like never before for a new independent investigation of 9/11 and if Democrats stand in our way they will be considered collaborators and part of the cover-up. Where's the call to repeal the torture legislation? Where's the call to repeal the Patriot Act? Where's the call to stop the NSA spying on Americans? What we should be hearing is repeal, repeal, repeal, but instead it's betrayal, betrayal and more betrayal on the part of the brown nose Democrats. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

Perhaps the Dems will have to change their stance as there is a very large movement to impeach George W. Bush as you can discover through this VERY comprehensive site: and check also "Nov. 11, 2006, Movement to Impeach Bush and Cheney Announced" at and a report on this Impeachment gathering - - MSNBC poll: Should Bush be impeached? So far its running at 87% for -- It is time to appoint an Independent Prosecutor as is advocated at

As for the massive fraud last Nov. 7, you'll hardly hear anything else on this since the Dems won anyway, but should the true scope of the massive rejection by the US voters of the criminally insane Bush policies be truly reflected in the electoral results, many of the issues mentioned in this compilation would probably evolved quite differently. You'll find numerous news excerpts and resources below exemplifying this vile corruption of democracy.

As for Rumsfeld's resignation, his proposed replacement, Robert Gates, former Director of the infamous CIA, has a decidedly dubious track record as you'll find in several excerpted articles below.

The planned war against Iran still appears to be very much on track as you'll see in War on Iran: Unleashing Armageddon in the Middle East "This is the largest amass ever of military power in the region, and it is gathering for a reason. (...) The powder keg is ready and all it needs is a match to ignite it."

Many other issues are covered: Gaza, past war crimes and genocides by the CIA, lots of environmental news and a very moving Great story with heart, just to mention a few.

So still plenty to pay attention to, plenty of wrongs to redress and traumas to heal.

Let me know if any of this moves you in some way.

"I felt a great wave of tremendous energy surge through my body. I was literally stunned by it. As I staggered out of the river, I felt myself elevated in consciousness in a most extraordinary way. A great inflow of glowing happiness uplifted me to a state of ecstasy. I was enraptured and aware of a great Light. Stumbling, I moved away from the river and walked and walked, not knowing where I was going. I continued on, unseeingly, into the desert. Please note! MY SIX WEEKS IN THE DESERT were a time of total inner cleansing of my human consciousness. Old attitudes, beliefs and prejudices were dissolved. The time has come for me to share with receptive people all that I felt, 'saw', realised and understood.... I was uplifted into inner radiant light and felt vibrant and wondrously alive with power. I was filled with ecstasy and joy and I knew beyond all doubt that THIS POWER was the true Creator out of which all created things had been given their being. This glorious interior harmony, peace, and sense of perfect fulfilment, needing nothing more to be added to that beautiful moment, was the very nature of the Reality - the Creative Power - giving Life to creation and existence....... I was lifted into another dimension of conscious perception, which enabled me to see the TRUTH concerning life and existence. I saw, lucidly and clearly, what was real and what was false in man's thinking. I realised that this 'Creative Power' I was experiencing was infinite, eternal, universal, filling all space beyond sky, oceans, earth, and all living things. I saw IT was MIND POWER. IT was the CREATIVE POWER of MIND. There was no point where this 'DIVINE CREATIVE POWER OF MIND' was not. I realised that human mind was drawn from DIVINE CREATIVE MIND but was only a candle lit by the sun. At times, my human sight was so spiritually heightened, I could see through rocks, earth, sand. These now appeared to be only a 'shimmer of tiny motes'. I realised that nothing was really solid! "

"Pra and I have been joining in Sacred Sexuality every night. The LoveMaking goes on throughout the entire night and I am in a state of constant ecstasy that I could not have ever imagined. I have not slept except briefly during the night for many nights, but I feel no particular fatigue the next day. Being with Pra seems to energize me. “Whenever I enter my bedroom, our sanctuary, I feel his presence and my body ‘ignites.’ During LoveMaking we have followed several of the pathways suggested by God in the Messages for sending the Love we are creating forth to humanity. I have blanketed the entire planet with the pure frequency of the Divine Feminine. We have created a SoulMate Womb between us and placed in it humanity and the reunions of SoulMates, utilizing the image of couples climbing the SoulMate path to the StarGate. We have also placed all of humanity within our shared heart, sending Love to each and every brother and sister. All of this work for God thrills me beyond words... “I have never before experienced such feelings as this LoveMaking creates. It is sheer ongoing ecstasy throughout my body and for what seems like miles beyond it. At times my heart ‘burns’ with the power of the energies and the feelings. I feel overwhelming Love for my blessed Pra and telepath him these thoughts and feelings which he returns with great depth of Love."

And we'll all assist in birth
Of the weaning from our fear
And the meaning of our hope
of connecting to the wind
of the love waiting to burst
as the water dreams it in

and the wisdom of our core
pressing our ears against the earth
we hear the storm the day before
and truly know that less is more

learning the language of the wind
detaching from synthetic life
from cruel and artificial worlds
we truly know how less is more

Take my hand, touch me now
Tell me, it's all perfect as it is
Breathe me in, breathe me out
Tell me, it's all perfect as it is

And we'll all assist in birth
Of the weaning from our greed
As our darkest shadows reign
And play out their final parts
The pain and horror, and the love
Will push the life out through our hearts

And the wisdom of our core
Pressing our ears against the earth
We hear the storm the day before
And truly know that less is more

Learning the language of the wind
Detaching from synthetic life
From cruel and artificial worlds
We truly know how less is more

Take my hand…tell me it's all perfect as it is

And will you assist in birth
Of the weaning from my fear
Of the meaning of my hope
Of connecting to the heart
As I let my ego go
As I find once again
That it is love we're here to learn
That you are me and I am you
And I tremble is it the truth
That it's all unfolding as it should?
Do we get the nightmare that we need?
To wake from darkness, plant new seeds

Oh, will you hold me now and tell me
It's all perfect as it is

"Many people don't want to know about the major cover-ups going on in our world. Feeling relatively secure and content in their personal lives, they choose to avoid matters which might disturb their contentment. Yet as long as we choose complacency over awareness, these major cover-ups will continue. In fact, they will likely grow in magnitude until people are finally forced to open their eyes and deal with the consequences. The sooner each of us decides that we do want to know, and that we are willing to invite others to open their eyes, the more easily we will be able to build a world that supports the good of all of us."

Human rights groups and several public inquiries in Europe have found the U.S. government, with the complicity of numerous governments worldwide, to be engaged in the illegal practice of extraordinary rendition, secret detention, and torture. The U.S. government-sponsored program of renditions is an unlawful practice in which numerous persons have been illegally detained and secretly flown to third countries, where they have suffered additional human rights abuses including torture and enforced disappearance. No one knows the exact number of persons affected, due to the secrecy under which the operations are carried out. For more information visit

US vetoes UN resolution on Israel (November 12, 2006)
The US has vetoed a United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution urging an immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. The resolution would have also condemned an Israeli attack in Gaza that killed 18 Palestinian civilians on Wednesday. Nine of the council's 15 members voted for the measure, while four abstained: Britain, Denmark, Japan and Slovakia. But the 'no' vote cast by US ambassador John Bolton was enough to kill the resolution. It was his second veto since he arrived at UN headquarters in August 2005. Mr Bolton's first, on July 13, 2006, killed a resolution reacting to an earlier Israeli incursion in Gaza. The US has cast 82 vetoes in the UN's 61 years and nine of the last 10 council vetoes, seven of which dealt with the Israel-Palestinian conflict. The measure defeated on Saturday was backed by Arab, Islamic and non-aligned nations and formally proposed by Qatar. It would have called on the Palestinian Authority to "take immediate and sustained action to bring an end to violence, including the firing of rockets on Israeli territory". The resolution would also have urged the international community to take steps to stabilise the situation and revive the Middle East peace process. It would have called for nations to consider "the possible establishment of an international mechanism" for the protection of civilians. It also would have condemned Israeli military operations in Gaza and called on the Jewish state to withdraw all troops from Gaza and end its operations in all Palestinian lands. Election 2006: Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me - By Chris Floyd
(...) The Democratic leadership is a deeply embedded part of the Establishment; multimillionaires like our soon-to-be Speaker, Nancy Pelosi (who is probably richer than Bush) aren't going to seriously challenge the near-total domination of American politics and society by Big Business and wealthy elites. They may re-arrange the display a little, but they are not going to upset the golden applecart. So while we may see a slight goosing of the minimum wage, we will almost certainly not see a major rollback of the relentless rightwing assault on the rights, protections and well-being of working people and the poor. We can hope for some modifications of the bizarre and punitive prescription drug "reforms" imposed by the Bush Party; but we won't see anything resembling a national health insurance system, despite the majority of Americans in favor of one. We won't see a reinstatement of the safety net that was gutted, pre-Bush, by Democrat Bill Clinton. We won't see major reductions – or indeed, any reductions – in military spending from a party that has faithfully approved every cent of every "special spending bill" that Bush has submitted to finance his off-the-books wars. We won't see a lessening of international tensions from a crew that has spent most of the past year bashing the Bush Administration for not being bellicose enough in threatening Iran, and for not larding Israel with even more deadly weaponry to carry out its aggression in Lebanon and its increasingly frenzied decimation in Gaza. We will not see an immediate withdrawal from Iraq; at best, we will see a few tentative timetables based on unreal and unrealizable "benchmarks" produced by some grandly gassy "bipartisan agreement" based on the face-saving formulas of the "Baker Commission." There is going to be no impeachment of Bush, even if the Democrats get hold of the Senate. There is going to be no criminal prosecution for the principal architects of the war crime in Iraq (and probably none of small fry either). There will be little or no rollback of the draconian strictures of the Patriot Act, which was overwhelmingly approved by the Democrats, or the many other measures – "national security letters," warrantless surveillance, etc. – introduced hugger-mugger by the "Unitary Executive." Indeed, we will be very lucky if the new Democratic leadership even revisits the Military Commissions Act. (...) Also remember that the worst depredations of the first Bush Administration, the Reagan Administration and the Nixon Administration were all carried out with strong Democratic majorities in Congress (except for a brief period of Republican Senate control in the Reagan years). Even in "normal" times (if we have ever known such a thing), even with the opposition party in control of Congress, there is virtually no end to the mischief that the executive branch can get up to. Nixon and Reagan waged whole covert wars, killing hundreds of thousands of people, without the approval or input of Congress. If anyone thinks the horrors of the Bush Imperium are somehow at an end – or will even be seriously impaired – by the results of yesterday's election, they have a harsh and bitter awakening to come. But still – the political situation we have today is better than what we had the day before. In a period of such deep crisis in the life of the Republic, and (to draw on Noam Chomsky) in a system of power so massive and far-reaching, even a small change can mean very real benefits to a good many people. (And to many good people.) And in any case, we should raise a glass to the American people for standing up – amidst the hailstorm of lies and bullshit thrown at them – and giving George W. Bush a resounding slap in the face. Long may he stew in this great and well-deserved humiliation.

Pelosi's support for Israel
With Pelosi as speaker, Jewish activists and officials are confident that the U.S. Congress will remain strongly pro-Israel.

Nancy Pelosi Gives A Pep Talk To AIPAC (05/27/05) MUST READ!
The speech affords a up-close look at what Pelosi thinks about Israel, the Palestinians, the Mideast, and nukes. (...) Pelosi denies that the key issue is Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza --- at a stroke repudiating numerous UN Security Council Resolutions that the US voted for and supposedly still supports. But clearly, that’s no longer the case, and hasn’t been for many years. The real issue, she states, is the survival of Israel. (...) But her most revealing statements concern nuclear proliferation, and they show why the Democrats (who don’t get it) are no improvement over the Republicans (who always get it wrong). In fact, the Democrats may be even more dangerous, precisely because there is still the perception in the land, however mistaken, that the Democrats are the party of enlightened ideas. I would be willing to bet that most registered democrats are not aware of how extreme their elected Democratic representatives are on these key issues. Nor can most thus have a true sense of how dire the situation is. According to Pelosi, the biggest danger to Israel today comes from Iran, whose nuclear ambitions, though still unproved, also threaten the US. Her perspective contains the seed of ominous things to come, because, after all, something will have to be done about Iran, right? Yes, and soon. Meanwhile, Pelosi manages to overlook Israel’s brutal treatment of the Palestinians, which undoubtedly is the greatest danger to Israel, by far, and comes from within. Nor does she mention Israel’s massive nuclear, chemical and biological weapons arsenal. But her statements additionally contain the tacit and troublesome assumption that the only people in the region who matter are Israelis and Americans. Everyone else, virtually the entire population of numerous countries, though no less imperiled by nuclear weapons (arguably even more so), simply don’t count in this calculus. In fact, Pelosi’s remarks are implicitly racist for this reason. The shocker, though, also near the end, is where Pelosi takes the US and Israeli nuclear monopoly in the region for granted, as if this were a good and necessary thing. The purpose of the NPT in her view is to shut down the rogue proliferators, who by definition are always those other guys, never us. It’s the stuff of which nuclear nightmares are made.

Scott Ritter describes Israel's role in shaping U.S. Foreign policy

Bush & His Whole Program Must Go
Millions of people went to the polls motivated largely by their disgust with the unjust, immoral war on Iraq and their revulsion with the entire Bush program, but there is a huge gap between what drove millions to the polls and the promises and actions of the Democrats who won. It remains urgent that millions of people take it upon ourselves to act independently of the terms and channels of official politics – to protest, to get out in the streets, to refuse to settle into “business as usual” – to drive the whole Bush regime out of office and bring his program to a halt!In the 72 hours since she has taken the mantle of the next Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi repeated her pledge that “impeachment is off the table.” In her victory press conference, she didn’t speak of the need to repeal the Military Commissions Act of 2006 that revoked habeas corpus and legalized torture. She didn’t decry the unending death and destruction that is daily terrorizing the people of Iraq. She did not pledge to stand firmly against the new war being prepared against Iran. Nor did she make a peep about defending women’s right to abortion and gay rights – even as Roe V. Wade is under increasing threat and gay marriage bans passed in an additional seven states. Instead, she recast this election as a mandate on manners and effectiveness: "The American people spoke out for a return to civility to the Capitol in Washington and how Congress conducts its work… And Democrats pledge civility and bipartisanship in the conduct of the work here, and we pledge partnerships with the Republicans in Congress and the president, not partisanship." The next day she sat down with a President who by any objective standard is a war criminal and who has been massively rejected by the people. But instead of seizing on the fact that Bush is rapidly losing legitimacy in the eyes of millions who are looking for a way to say “NO MORE!,” she lent him a sense of legitimacy by, in her own words, “extend[ing] the hand of friendship, of partnership.” Think what it means to pledge “partnership” with a regime that lied its way into a war that has for years struck panic in the corridors of hospitals, terror in the beds of children, overcrowding in the morgues throughout Iraq and stolen more than half a million lives. (...) We are in a moment that could swing in one of two ways.In one direction, lies the danger of the millions who hate what George Bush’s presidency has wrought and is still planning being lulled into thinking that the game is over, that they have won, that it is time to go home, celebrate, and tune out. But torture carried out under the banner of bipartisanship is still torture. The same is true of an immoral war. And the stranglehold on the rights of women and gays is still tightening. In the other direction, lies the possibility of actually stopping these horrors and driving out those responsible by breaking millions out of the deadly confines of “bipartisanship and civility.” These elections, while not bringing about the change millions want and need, did raise the expectations of many who are aching for this change, did offer a glimpse of how isolated this regime is from the desires of “its people,” and did reveal the potential power of the millions who expressed their massive disgust.Which way this moment swings is up to each of us and up to all of us collectively. Justin Raimondo : The Antiwar Wave
The antiwar wave that has been rising for months crashed and broke over the heads of the Republican Party, sweeping away all but the most entrenched incumbents. This election, in the broadest sense, was a referendum on the Iraq war - and the results are a dramatic rebuke to the War Party.

Democrats Take Control of the Senate
Democrats wrested control of the Senate from Republicans Wednesday with an upset victory in Virginia, giving the party complete domination of Capitol Hill for the first time since 1994.

Historic Democratic Victory
Despite widespread problems with electronic voting machines, long lines that stretched several city blocks in some states, hours-long waiting at the polls, and GOP intimidation tactics aimed to drive away predominantly Democratic and minority voters, the public turned out en masse Tuesday and helped shift the balance of power in Washington, DC, to Democrats for the first time in 12 years.

Dems' wins in U.S. are embraced oversea (Nov 8)
MADRID, Spain - The seismic shift that midterm elections brought to Washington's political landscape was welcomed by many Wednesday who oppose the war in Iraq and the harsh methods the Bush administration has employed in fighting terrorism. From Paris to Pakistan, politicians, analysts and ordinary citizens said they hoped the Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives would force President Bush to adopt a more conciliatory approach to global crises, and teach a president many see as a "cowboy" a lesson in humility. But some also expressed fears that a split in power and a lame-duck president might stall global trade talks and weaken much-needed American influence. (...) Regardless of the effect on world events, global giddiness that Bush was finally handed a political black-eye was almost palpable. "Of course, the citizens of the United States are humans with a conscience. It's a reprisal vote against the war in Iraq, against the corruption" within the Bush administration, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said. "All this fills us with optimism." In an extraordinary joint statement, more than 200 Socialist members of the European Parliament hailed the American election results as "the beginning of the end of a six-year nightmare for the world" and gloated that they left the Bush administration "seriously weakened."In Paris, expatriates and French citizens alike packed the city's main American haunts to watch results, with some standing to cheer or boo as vote tabulations came in. One Frenchman, teacher Jean-Pierre Charpemtrat, 53, said it was about time U.S. voters figured out what much of the rest of the world already knew. CLIP

World Greets US Election Results With Joy, Relief
For Europe and much of the rest of the world, US voters' repudiation of the Bush administration in midterm elections Tuesday and the dismissal of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Wednesday confirmed the widespread view that President Bush and his policies have done more to tarnish America's image abroad and strain its global relations than any other US president in recent history.

Bipartisanship on Hold (Nov 10)
Editors of the New York Times write: "Mr. Bush made it clear that, for now, his idea of how to 'put the elections behind us' is to use the Republicans' last two months in control of Congress to try to push through one of the worst ideas his administration and its Republican allies on Capitol Hill have come up with ... a bill that would legalize his illegal wiretapping program and gut the law that limits a president's ability to abuse his power in this way." (...) The bill Mr. Bush wants was drafted by Vice President Dick Cheney's lawyers and by Senator Arlen Specter, the outgoing Republican chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Mr. Specter presented it as a compromise that would regulate the president's ability to spy on Americans' phone calls and e-mail without a court order. It really was a cave-in to Mr. Bush's effort to expand his power beyond limits that have existed for nearly 30 years. (...) The White House refuses to explain itself because this has never been about catching terrorists. It is about overturning the crucial limits placed on executive authority after Watergate and Vietnam. Mr. Cheney and a few other hard-liners have been trying to turn back the clock and have succeeded in some truly scary ways, including the military commissions act they pushed through Congress before the elections. It is vital that they not be allowed to do any more harm.

U.S.: Vice President Endorses Torture - CHENEY TOO SHOULD BE FORCED TO RESIGN!
Cheney Expresses Approval of the CIA’s Use of Waterboarding(Washington, DC, October 26, 2006) – U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has issued the Bush administration’s first clear endorsement of a form of torture known as waterboarding, or mock drowning, said Human Rights Watch today. (...) In April 2006, in a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, more than 100 U.S. law professors stated unequivocally that waterboarding is torture, and is a criminal felony punishable under the U.S. federal criminal code. “Vice President Cheney needs to get a better lawyer, someone who will tell him not to endorse criminal activities over the airwaves,” said Malinowski. On September 6, the Pentagon issued a new Field Manual on Intelligence Interrogation that explicitly forbids the use of waterboarding in any interrogation. General Jeff Kimmons, the Senior Intelligence officer in the U.S. Army, explained when these new rules were released: “No good intelligence is going to come from abusive practices. I think history tells us that. I think the empirical evidence of the last five years, hard years, tell us that.” The U.S. Army’s new counterinsurgency manual states that “torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment is never a morally permissible option, even in situations where lives depend on gaining information.” It concludes that those who “lose moral legitimacy” by employing such methods “lose the war.”

Cheney is next on the chopping block (10/11/12, 2006)
According to Washington insiders, there are moves afoot to dump Vice President Dick Cheney and replace him with either John McCain or Rudolph Giuliani prior to the 2008 presidential election. Whoever succeeds Cheney will be able to campaign for the presidency with the perks that come with being an incumbent Vice President.Since the increasingly-besieged Cheney has signaled he has no intention of voluntarily stepping down, the strategy by the Bush camp may be to force him out by presenting evidence before Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald that it was Cheney who was responsible for the compromise of CIA non-proliferation covert officer Valerie Plame Wilson and her Brewster Jennings & Associates cover firm. Cheney in a Box - By Mike Whitney
The Democrats didn't win anything; that's all hogwash. Bush was buried beneath an avalanche of bad news. It was a carefully-coordinated coup intended to install "adults" (like Robert Gates) in positions of power, change the policy in Iraq, and remove Rumsfeld and Cheney from office.

Rumsfeld quits; Bush taps Gates for post (Nov 8)
WASHINGTON - After years of defending his secretary of defense, President Bush on Wednesday announced Donald H. Rumsfeld's resignation within hours of the Democrats' triumph in congressional elections. Bush reached back to his father's administration to tap a former CIA director to run the Pentagon. The Iraq war was the central issue of Rumsfeld's nearly six-year tenure, and unhappiness with the war was a major element of voter dissatisfaction Tuesday — and the main impetus for his departure. Even some GOP lawmakers in Congress became critical of the war's management, and growing numbers of politicians were urging Bush to replace Rumsfeld. Bush said Robert M. Gates, 63, who has served in a variety of national security jobs under six previous presidents, would be nominated to replace Rumsfeld. Gates, currently the president of Texas A&M University, is a Bush family friend and a member of an independent group studying the way ahead in Iraq. (...) Just last week Bush told reporters that he expected Rumsfeld, 74, to remain until the end of the administration's term. And although Bush said Wednesday that his decision to replace Rumsfeld was not based on politics, the announcement of a Pentagon shake-up came on the heels of Tuesday's voting, in which Democrats captured control of the House and could win control of the Senate if the remaining undecided race in Virginia goes their way. With his often-combative defense of the war in Iraq, Rumsfeld had been the administration's face of the conflict. He became more of a target — and more politically vulnerable — as the war grew increasingly unpopular at home amid rising violence and with no end in sight. Gates ran the CIA under the first President Bush during the first Gulf war. He retired from government in 1993. He joined the CIA in 1966 and is the only agency employee to rise from an entry level job to become director. A native of Kansas, he made a name for himself as an analyst specializing in the former Soviet Union and he served in the intelligence community for more than a quarter century, under six presidents. (...) Gates took over the CIA as acting director in 1987, when William Casey was terminally ill with cancer. Questions were raised about Gates' knowledge of the Iran-Contra scandal, so he withdrew from consideration to take over the CIA permanently. Yet he stayed on as deputy director. Then-National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft, who has been a critic of the younger Bush's policies, asked Gates to be his deputy in 1989 during the administration of Bush's father. President Bush, a former CIA director himself, asked him to run the CIA two years later. The scandal had faded and Gates won confirmation. After leaving government, Gates joined corporate boards and wrote a memoir, "From The Shadows: The Ultimate Insider's Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War." It was published in 1996. Gates is a close friend of the Bush family, and particularly the first President Bush. He became the president of Texas A&M University in August 2002. The university is home to the presidential library of Bush's father.

Gates Has History of Manipulating Intelligence (8 November 2006)
Robert Gates, the former director of the CIA during the presidency of George H.W. Bush, and who was tapped Tuesday by the president to replace Donald Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense, is part of Texas's good ol' boy network. He may be best known for playing a role in arming Iraq's former dictator Saddam Hussein with American made weapons in the country's war against Iran in the 1980's. Gates, who currently is president of Texas A&M University, came under intense fire during confirmation hearings in the early 1990's for being unaware of the explosive situation in Iraq in the 1980's, and the demise of the Soviet republic. Gates joined the CIA in 1966, and spent eight years there as an analyst before moving over to the National Security Council in 1974. He returned to the CIA in 1980, and a year later was appointed by Ronald Reagan to serve as deputy director for intelligence. Five years later, he was named deputy director for the agency, the number two post in the agency. In 1989, he was appointed deputy director of the National Security Council and in 1991, when the first Bush administration was in office, he was named director of the spy shop. During contentious Senate confirmation hearings in October 1991 - that are bound to come up again - Gates's role in cooking intelligence information during the Iran-contra scandal was revealed. It was during those hearings that senators found out about a December 2, 1986, 10-page classified memo written by Thomas Barksdale, the CIA analyst for Iran. That memo claimed that covert arms sales to the country demonstrated "a perversion of the intelligence process" that is staggering in its proportions. (...) In testimony before the Senate on October 1, 1991, Harold P. Ford, former vice chairman of the National Intelligence Council, described an aspect of Gates's personality that mirrors many of the top officials in the Bush administration today. "Bob Gates has often depended too much on his own individual analytic judgments and has ignored or scorned the views of others whose assessments did not accord with his own. This would be okay if he were uniquely all-seeing. He has not been ...," Ford said. At the hearing, other CIA analysts said Gates forced them to twist intelligence to exaggerate the threat posed by the former Soviet Union. Analysts alleged a report approved by Gates overstated Soviet influence in Iran that specifically led the late President Ronald Reagan into making policy decisions that turned into the Iran-contra scandal. (...) If confirmed, Gates would arguably be overseeing a war that removed a dictator he personally helped to prop up. Tom Harkin, a senator from Iowa, described Gates's role in intelligence sharing operations with Iraq during a time when the United States helped arm Saddam Hussein in Iraq's war against Iran. "I also have doubts and questions about Mr. Gates's role in the secret intelligence sharing operation with Iraq," Harkin said during Gates's confirmation hearings on November 7, 1991. "Robert Gates served as assistant to the director of the CIA in 1981 and as deputy director for intelligence from 1982 to 1986. In that capacity, he helped develop options in dealing with the Iran-Iraq war, which eventually evolved into a secret intelligence liaison relationship with Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Gates was in charge of the directorate that prepared the intelligence information that was passed on to Iraq. He testified that he was also an active participant in the operation during 1986. The secret intelligence sharing operation with Iraq was not only a highly questionable and possibly illegal operation, but also may have jeopardized American lives and our national interests. The photo reconnaissance, highly sensitive electronic eavesdropping, and narrative texts provided to Saddam may not only have helped him in Iraq's war against Iran, but also in the recent gulf war." NOTE: Not only should Democrats firmly oppose this Gates (of hell!) at his confirmation hearings, but they should request the CIA to come clean and admit to the untold and unrelenting horrors it has created around the world and amend its ways or face dissolution. Likewise only a Defense Secretary committed to deflating the bloated Pentagon and turning on its head its all-out pro-war stance should be accepted. The Pentagon should be focusing solely on Defense and not longer on Offense. And a Department of Peace as suggested by Rep. Dennis Kucinich should urgently be created and fully funded with Kucinich, or someone proposed by him, heading it. FIND OUT MORE ON THIS PROPOSED DEPARTMENT OF PEACE THROUGH - A conference on this is scheduled for next Feb. 5 to 7 2007 in DC. READ ALSO New Possibilities for a Dept. of Peace at

The Secret World of Robert Gates
Robert Parry writes, "Robert Gates, George W. Bush's choice to replace Donald Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary, is a trusted figure within the Bush family's inner circle, but there are lingering questions about whether Gates is a trustworthy public official." The 63-year-old Gates has long faced accusations of collaborating with Islamic extremists in Iran, arming Saddam Hussein's dictatorship in Iraq, and politicizing U.S. intelligence to conform with the desires of policymakers - three key areas that relate to his future job. Gates skated past some of these controversies during his 1991 confirmation hearings to be CIA director - and the current Bush administration is seeking to slip Gates through the congressional approval process again, this time by pressing for a quick confirmation by the end of the year, before the new Democratic-controlled Senate is seated. If Bush's timetable is met, there will be no time for a serious investigation into Gates's past. Fifteen years ago, Gates got a similar pass when leading Democrats agreed to put "bipartisanship" ahead of careful oversight when Gates was nominated for the CIA job by President George H.W. Bush. In 1991, despite doubts about Gates's honesty over Iran-Contra and other scandals, the career intelligence officer brushed aside accusations that he played secret roles in arming both sides of the Iran-Iraq War. Since then, however, documents have surfaced that raise new questions about Gates's sweeping denials. For instance, the Russian government sent an intelligence report to a House investigative task force in early 1993 stating that Gates participated in secret contacts with Iranian officials in 1980 to delay release of 52 U.S. hostages then held in Iran, a move to benefit the presidential campaign of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. (...) Middle Eastern witnesses alleged that Gates worked on the secret Iraqi initiative, which included Saddam Hussein's procurement of cluster bombs and chemicals used to produce chemical weapons for the war against Iran. The Iraq Mandate
"For the first time in American history, Americans have gone to the polls in wartime and rejected that war," writes Robert Dreyfuss. "Not only that, but they've done so overwhelmingly. Will the Democrats Become Part of the Problem?
If the Democrats are to make a real difference, their first task is to repeal the Orwellian-named "Patriot Acts," the torture legislation, the detention without court evidence legislation, and the right-to-spy and invade privacy without court warrant legislation. The White House tyrant needs to be quickly told that one more "signing statement" and he will be impeached, convicted, and turned over to the War Crimes Tribunal at the Hague.

Our Long National Nightmare Has Just Begun
As ugly secrets surface, Bushists will turn desperate. Democracy has failed their grand schemes; token resignations like Rumsfeld's come too little, too late. Only tyranny can save their skins. Or will they tough it out and suck up the fines and prison sentences to come? The next year or two could go either way.

Peter Phillips : Human Rights Denial Deserves Impeachment
Human Rights belong to people collectively. To believe in rights for some and not others is a denial of the humanness of people worldwide. Yet, denial is exactly what Congress and George W. Bush did with the signing of the Military Commission Act of 2006. (...) We are in a time of extremism, permanent war, and the unilateral manifestation of ethnocentrism and power by an openly public cabal of people in the U.S. government. Those in power are set on the U.S. military domination of the world. They seem willing to defy the foundational values of the American people to achieve their ends. We have no choice but to declare openly our belief in universal human rights and demand the immediate impeachment of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney and a full accounting of those in their administration.

Outcome Uncertain in Eight House Races (10 November 2006)
Washington - Eight House races remain without winners after Tuesday's election, with Republican incumbents in tight contests to keep their seats and state officials not rushing to end the dispute.

Voting in the absence of Choice
The corporate financing of political campaigns is, in fact, a capital investment in the status quo that benefits the wealthy and marginalizes those with neither wealth nor property. That explains why substantive change is rarely accomplished through the vote in America. It also explains the remarkable consistency and homogeneity of governmental policy through the decades; domestic and foreign, regardless of which party is in power.

Democrats Call for Federal Probe Over GOP "Robocalling"
Jason Leopold reports that Democratic congressmen John Conyers and John Dingell called for a federal investigation late Tuesday evening into a last minute ploy by Republicans to swing the midterm election by inundating registered Democrats with harassing prerecorded telephone calls trashing the candidates they intend to vote for.

It's a Candidate Calling. Again.
This year's heavy volume of automated political phone calls has infuriated countless voters and triggered sharp complaints from Democrats, who say the Republican Party has crossed the line in bombarding households with recorded attacks on candidates.

Virginia State Board of Elections Secretary Finds Widespread Incidents of Voter Suppression
Over the past several days, voters throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia have filed complaints of incidents aimed at suppressing voter turnout in heavily Democratic and African American neighborhoods. Today, the Secretary of the Virginia State Board of Elections Jean Jensen concluded that the incidents appear widespread and deliberate.

Faults and dirty tricks hit results (Nov 8),,3-2443288,00.html
From Tim Reid in Washington Problems with electronic voting machines and allegations of ballot rigging and intimidation triggered a flurry of dirty tricks accusations from both sides today. The protests were loudest in the most closely contested states and mostly from Democrats, many of whom are convinced that the last two presidential elections were stolen from them. The FBI said that it was investigating complaints that voters in Virginia had received telephone calls with misleading information about where their nearest polling station was located. The bogus calls included some from people claiming to work for Jim Webb, the Democratic senatorial candidate, fuelling suspicions among Democrats of Republican chicanery in a Senate race crucial to who will control the chamber.Although there was no hard evidence of Republican dirty tricks, Democrat suspicions have been bolstered by a revelations about the reliability of the machines and the political affiliations of the companies that own them.Since the 2000 Florida recount, the US government has spent $3 billion to help states overhaul their voting technology. Over 90 per cent of polls yesterday were equipped with new computerised voting machines. In 2004, the former head of the biggest provider, Diebolt, wrote a fundraising letter stating that he was committed "to help Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the President". In Ohio all 12 voting machines in a predominately black district in Cleveland crashed when voting opened at 6.30am, feeding fears that minority and largely Democrat-leaning voters were being disenfranchised. Election officials in Indiana went to court to get a three hour voting extension after a computer glitch in 70 precincts delayed poll opening. Colorado Democrats were opposed by the Republicans when they asked a state judge to allow late voting, arguing that malfunctions had forced long queues to wait up to two hours while others were turned away. In Maryland, Democrat officials accused Republicans of launching a campaign of voter intimidation after it emerged that the party's poll watchers had been issued with a handbook urging them to challenge voters who they suspected of not being registered to vote. Democrats said the tactic was reminiscent of intimidation used against blacks during the Civil Rights era. In Florida’s Broward County, notorious for the "hanging chad" debacle in the disputed 2000 presidential race, 14 voting machines in one precinct stopped working for 90 minutes. But in New Jersey it was the Republicans claiming to be victims of a dirty tricks operation with their candidate, Tom Kean, alleging that his campaign headquarters had been padlocked by Democrat operatives. His opponent claimed it was a Republican stunt.

HOW THEY STOLE THE MID-TERM ELECTION By Greg Palast, November 6, 2006
Here's how the 2006 mid-term election was stolen. (...) For six years now, our investigations team, at first on assignment for BBC TV and the Guardian, has been digging into the nitty-gritty of the gaming of US elections. We've found that November 7, 2006 is a day that will live in infamy. Four and a half million votes have been shoplifted. Here's how they'll do it, in three easy steps: CLIP

THE NAFTA SUPERHIGHWAY - by Ron Paul (October 31, 2006)
By now many Texans have heard about the proposed “NAFTA Superhighway,” which is also referred to as the trans-Texas corridor. What you may not know is the extent to which plans for such a superhighway are moving forward without congressional oversight or media attention. This superhighway would connect Mexico, the United States, and Canada, cutting a wide swath through the middle of Texas and up through Kansas City. Offshoots would connect the main artery to the west coast, Florida, and northeast. Proponents envision a ten-lane colossus the width of several football fields, with freight and rail lines, fiber-optic cable lines, and oil and natural gas pipelines running alongside. This will require coordinated federal and state eminent domain actions on an unprecedented scale, as literally millions of people and businesses could be displaced. The loss of whole communities is almost certain, as planners cannot wind the highway around every quaint town, historic building, or senior citizen apartment for thousands of miles. (...) The ultimate goal is not simply a superhighway, but an integrated North American Union – complete with a currency, a cross-national bureaucracy, and virtually borderless travel within the Union. Like the European Union, a North American Union would represent another step toward the abolition of national sovereignty altogether. Military Families, Iraq Veterans Protest Pentagon's Plan to Rush Reserve Call-Ups (Nov 7)
The Pentagon revealed in September that it may change the policy limiting National Guard deployments in order to send more weekend warriors to Iraq after the elections. While most of the media and the American public slept through the news, the family members of more than 400,000 National Guard and Reservists did not. Some of them have spent the past six weeks collecting thousands of signatures on petitions protesting the Pentagon's plans and demanding an end to the "backdoor draft," cited in the document as "troop extensions, stop-loss orders, [and] involuntary recalls." The petitions will be delivered to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on Thursday, just seventy-two hours after all four versions of the Military Times published an editorial calling for his removal. The contingent, which includes Iraq War veterans, retired National Guard and Reserve soldiers, military families, and citizen supporters, is led by Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), a national organization of more than 3,000 military families opposed to the war in Iraq, with members in all 50 states and at military installations around the world. Hundreds of MFSO members have had sons and daughters, husbands and wives forced to stay in the military, and in Iraq, long after their contract expired. (...) In order for the Army to carry out its plan to maintain troop levels of 120,000 in Iraq through 2010, the Pentagon will have to lift the restraints on Guard deployments, which now limit Guard combat tours to two out of every five years. Almost 300,000 Guard soldiers - 60 percent of the force - have hit their threshold for overseas combat, but National Guard Lieutenant General Steven Blum expects his soldiers to get the call again. The Pentagon has postponed announcing the likelihood of additional mobilizations and accelerated call-ups for Reservists until after the November elections because it's such a politically explosive issue. For the military families and veterans who will be at the Pentagon this Thursday seeking to stop the stop-loss and prevent the Pentagon from redeploying Reservists months, if not years, before the current policy allows, it's a matter of life and death.

Afghanistan After Democracy: the untold story through photographic images
This book is the story of suffering of the Afghan people. This book exposes the lies of the Bush administration about the post-Taliban Afghanistan, and the disaster brought upon Afghanistan by the United States of America and her allies. It exposes democracy as the buzz word for the neocolonial adventure of the US. The claims of reconstruction in Afghanistan is nothing but a total fraud. It exposes the failure of the US government at all levels in Afghanistan. Finally, it exposes the genocide committed by the US government through the use of uranium weapons and the consequences of these weapons of mass destruction particularly congenital deformities. Large percentage of the earning from this book would be spent toward projects in Afghanistan. Particularly, my hope is to build a women-children hospital with an adjacent research facility. Five years later Rex Tomb, chief of investigative publicity for the FBI explains, “The reason 9/11 is not mentioned on Osama bin Laden's Most Wanted page is because the FBI has no hard evidence connecting bin Laden to 9/11… Among many questions, author Ed Haas starts with, “If the U.S. government does not have enough hard evidence connecting bin Laden to 9/11, how is it possible that it had enough evidence to invade Afghanistan?”

Former Agent Says Google and CIA in Partnership (Oct 31)
Is Google's quest to manage the world's information leading straight to the CIA? Former CIA clandestine case officer Robert David Steele made some very hot comments on his appearance on the Alex Jones radio show. Steele cites his contacts within the agency with the information that Google and the CIA are involved with one another. Steele said, "I think that Google has made a very important strategic mistake in dealing with the secret elements of the U.S. government - that is a huge mistake and I’m hoping they’ll work their way out of it and basically cut that relationship off."In reference to Google's fight against the U.S. Department of Justice for the privacy of its users, Steele claims that it was an elaborate charade intended for the public eye. "Google was a little hypocritical when they were refusing to honor a Department of Justice request for information because they were heavily in bed with the Central Intelligence Agency, the office of research and development," concluded Steele. From reports, Steele did not bring evidence to light in order to back up his claims, and neither Google nor the CIA are yet commenting on the matter.

What he didn't announce is that he had one of his staffers insert in the Defense Department's funding bill, literally in the middle of the night, a provision to shut down the Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, known as SEGIR ... American occupation officials have been sent to jail on bribery and conspiracy charges, and SEGIR has exposed disastrously poor construction work by well-connected companies, and discovered that the military did not properly track hundreds of thousands of weapons it shipped to Iraqi security forces."

World Risks "Dirty" Energy Future

Could "Wild Laws" Save Life on Earth?
The 21 species of albatross are some of the world's most majestic birds. An adult has a wingspan of up to 3.5 meters and can circumnavigate the world in a single flight. Yet each year, 100,000 of them are killed by longline fishing, where nets up to 80 miles long with thousands of hooks are towed by fishing boats catching birds as well as fish. As a consequence of this indiscriminate slaughter, 19 of the 21 species are under threat of extinction ... But a body of legal opinion is proposing what are being called "wild laws," which would speak for birds and animals, and even rivers and nature.

Climate Change Threatens Heritage Sites
From archaeological ruins in Scotland to 13th century mosques in the Sahara, the effects of climate change could destroy some of the world's most important natural and cultural heritage sites, a report has revealed. Heritage sites that have existed for thousands of years "may, by virtue of climate change, very well not be available to future generations," said Achim Steiner, head of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

How Green Was My Election?

Pombo (R-Calif.), who received substantial contributions from oil and gas companies, lost his seat to Jerry McNerney, who runs a start-up company that hopes to make wind turbines.

City Residents Vote to Tax Selves for Carbon Use
Voters in a Colorado university town nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains have passed the country's first municipal carbon tax to fight global warming.

The Irresponsible (04 November 2006)
In his latest work, "A Brief History of the Future," Jacques Attali envisions total chaos for the years around 2050. After the extremely alarmist report by Nicolas Stern, former economist at the World Bank, who argues that the international community, but above all, China, India, and the United States, must urgently mobilize to contain global warming which could cause an economic recession "of catastrophic scope," American and Canadian scientists have been tolling the alarm. In the very serious review, Science, they announce that virtually all species of fish and crustaceans fished for consumption will have disappeared from the oceans before 2050 if present trends continue. That is to say too intensive fishing, industrial fishing where many fish are tossed overboard, dead, because they are too small, endangers biodiversity. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), this catastrophic scenario would be unlikely. (...) While Great Britain calls for signing a global agreement to reduce carbon dioxide emissions within two years, the White House has undoubtedly acknowledged the report, an acknowledgement that does not prevent the United States from being the most significant greenhouse gas-emitting country in the world - 25% of emissions for 5% of the global population.

Action Alert: Oppose Oil Production in Ecuador's Yasuní National Park (November 8, 2006)
After an earlier successful campaign to halt oil road construction, the message must still be sent that oil extraction and protected areas do not mix.

Green Fuel’s Dirty Secret
While corn based ethanol, promoted by the Bush administration as the “green fuel of the future” has been exposed as “one of the dirtiest forms of energy,” author Sasha Lilley further exposes the real drive behind corn based ethanol’s major role in Bush’s Biofuels Initiative. Archer Daniel Midland, the largest U.S. subsidized producer of corn and ethanol, and 10th worst corporate air polluter, is also a major financial contributor to both Republican and Democrat parties with an extremely successful pattern of lobbying congress. Government largesse for this inefficient and extremely environmentally destructive form of energy is thus secured as ADM writes and sets both State and Federal policy around coal, corn and ethanol.
“Ethanol: The Dirty Truth,” Sasha Lilley, CorpWatch, 6/1/ 2006

The Energy Debit of Making Ethanol (Apr. 01, 2006)
Let’s do a simple calculation, using Patzek’s findings, to show how the ethanol hype violates basic principles of material and energy balances. (Every freshman engineering student understands this type of calculation.) We call this a control volume approach.Take one gallon of ordinary gasoline. To replace that gallon with an equivalent number of BTUs requires 1.4 gallons of ethanol. Since corn is the only significant source of ethanol touted by its lobby, let’s look at corn-based ethanol production. The process of converting corn into ethanol consumes 58 percent of the corn’s BTU content. Another 11 percent of those BTU’s are burned in moving the ethanol to the consumer at the service station. Thus, 69 percent of the energy contained in the corn is lost during processing and transportation. That leaves just 31 percent for conversion into fuel. So we take that 0.31 and divide the 1.4 gallons of ethanol (mentioned above) by it, in order to match the BTU content of one gallon of ordinary gasoline. It becomes clear that you need corn with an energy content the equivalent of 4.5 gallons of ethanol, in order to produce the 1.4 gallons we started with (1.4 / 0.31 = 4.5). But here is the punchline. About 40 percent of corn’s calorific value comes from fossil fuels that are used during the cultivation, harvesting, and transportation of the crop. Therefore, to produce 4.5 gallons of ethanol (which remember, due to conversion losses mentioned above, yields just 1.4 gallons of actual ethanol for use as motor fuel) requires farmers to use about 1.8 gallons of ordinary gasoline equivalent, in the forms of natural gas (for fertilizer) and motor fuel (primarily diesel). Thus, to produce enough ethanol to replace one gallon of fossil gasoline, farmers and processors consume at least 1.8 gallons of fossil fuels. Incredibly, this calculation is conservative because it assumes that the ethanol manufacturing process is self-contained, that is, that incoming corn provides all operating energy and that ethanol is transported by ethanol-burning trucks. If we use a more logical methodology, the 1.8 gallons could actually double! In short, no matter what the environmentalists, farmers, and super hawks have to say, the numbers for ethanol just don’t add up.

How long can the world feed itself? (Oct 12, 2006)
We are still living off the proceeds of the Green Revolution, but that hit diminishing returns 20 years ago. Now we live in a finely balanced situation in which world food supply just about meets demand, with no reserve to cover further population growth. But the population will grow anyway, and the world's existing grain supply for human consumption is being eroded by three different factors: meat, heat and biofuels. For the sixth time in the past seven years, the human race will grow less food than it eats this year. We closed the gap by eating into food stocks accumulated in better times, but there is no doubt that the situation is getting serious. The world's food stocks have shrunk by half since 1999, from a reserve big enough to feed the entire world for 116 days, to a predicted low of only 57 days by the end of this year. That is well below the official safety level, and there is no sign that the downward trend is going to reverse. If it doesn't, then at some point not too far down the road we reach the point of absolute food shortages, and rationing by price kicks in. In other words, grain prices soar, and the poorest start to starve. CLIP

World grain yield fell for four successive years from 2000 to 2003,bringing reserves to the lowest in thirty years. The situation has not improved despite a 'bumper' harvest in 2004, which was just enough to satisfy world consumption. In too many food production regions of the world, conventional farming practices have severely depleted the underground water to the point where rivers and lakes have dried out, topsoil has been eroded away, and wild life decimated. At the same time, world oil production may have passed its peak; oil price hit a record high of US$58 a barrel on 4 April 2005, and is expected to top US$100 within two years. This spells looming disaster for conventional industrial agriculture, which is heavily dependent on both oil and water. The true costs of our current food production system are becoming all too clear. CLIP

The 100-Mile Diet
When the average North American sits down to eat, each ingredient has typically traveled at least 1,500 miles from farm to plate. That's a total disconnection from where our food is coming from. What would it be like to eat locally for one year? We drew a 100-mile circle around our home in Vancouver, Canada. The 100-Mile Diet was born.

Slow Food Nation, by Alice Waters
By now it is generally conceded that the food we eat could actually be making us sick, but we still haven't acknowledged the full consequences--environmental, political, cultural, social and ethical--of our national diet. These consequences include soil depletion, water and air pollution, the loss of family farms and rural communities, and even global warming.

Dirty water kills 5,000 children a day (Nov 10, 2006),,1944324,00.html
Sanitation the key to saving millions of lives· UN urges governments to ensure supplies for all - Nearly two million children a year die for want of clean water and proper sanitation while the world's poor often pay more for their water than people in Britain or the US, according to a major new report. The United Nations Development Programme, in its annual Human Development report, argues that 1.1 billion people do not have safe water and 2.6 billion suffer from inadequate sewerage. This is not because of water scarcity but poverty, inequality and government failure. The report urges governments to guarantee that each person has at least 20 litres of clean water a day, regardless of wealth, location, gender or ethnicity. If water was free to the poor, it adds, it could trigger the next leap forward in human development. Many sub-Saharan Africans get less than 20 litres of water a day and two-thirds have no proper toilets. By contrast, the average Briton uses 150 litres a day while Americans are the world's most profligate, using 600 litres a day. Phoenix, Arizona, uses 1,000 litres per person on average - 100 times as much as Mozambique. (...) Many countries spend less than 1% of national income on water. This needs to rise sharply, as does the share of foreign aid spent on water projects, the UNDP says. It shows how spending on clean water and sanitation led to dramatic advances in health and infant mortality in Britain and the United States in the 1800s.In the world's worst slums, people often pay five to 10 times more than wealthy people in the same cities or in London. This is because they often have to buy water from standpipes and pay a middle man by the bucket. "The poorer you are, the more you pay," says Mr Watkins. Poor people also waste much time walking miles to collect small amounts of water. The report estimates that 40bn hours are spent collecting water each year in sub-Saharan Africa - an entire working year for all the people in France. And the water the poor do get is often contaminated, spreading diseases that kill people or leave them unable to work. The UNDP estimates that nearly half of all people in developing countries at any one time are suffering from an illness caused by bad water or sanitation and that 443m school days are missed each year. There is plenty of water globally but it is not evenly distributed and is difficult to transport. Some countries use more than they have due to irrigation, population growth and so on. But many simply do not handle their water properly. The Middle East is the world's most "water-stressed" region, with Palestinians, especially in Gaza, suffering the most. Climate change is likely to hit the developing world hardest, reducing the availability of water, lowering agricultural productivity and leaving millions hungry. Changing weather patterns are already causing drought in countries such as Kenya, Mali and Zimbabwe, but wet areas are likely to become wetter still, causing devastating floods and loss of life. Water crisis a main cause of mass suffering
Worldwide water shortage, which leaves 1.1 billion people with no access to safe water and 2.6 billion people without basic sanitation, is steadily increasing. A newly released report from the UK relief and development agency Tearfund announces, "Governments are failing to tackle a crisis in which a child dies from dehydration from diarrhea every 14 seconds. Half the world's hospital beds are taken up by people with water-borne diseases…6,000 children are dying every day from diseases associated with lack of access to safe drinking water.” The $15 billion needed to meet the UN's Millennium Development Goal to "halve by 2015 the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation" is, according to the report, "a small portion of the $100 billion that is spent each year on bottled water, mainly as a fashion accessory." The New Yorker article sited below grapples with various controversial solutions to water distribution; from dams and desalination to agrarian reform and conservation.

THE LAST DROP - Confronting the possibility of a global catastrophe (10/16/06)

Stronach joins Clinton at anti-poverty session (Nov. 9 200
Belinda Stronach and Rick Mercer pleaded for support Thursday for a program that would provide insecticide-treated nets to protect African children from malaria. The Canadian MP and well-known Canadian comedian joined luminaries such as former U.S. president Bill Clinton and actor Mia Farrow Thursday in calling for help to end poverty at an international conference on global poverty in Montreal. The former president, who stopped to sign an autograph on his way into the convention centre, received an ovation more fitting a rock star than a politician, CTV's Rob Lurie reported from the convention centre floor.Clinton put his charisma to work at the Montreal Millennium Promise Conference, firing up enthusiasm for the elimination of poverty. The war in Iraq cost US$300 billion, Clinton told more than 3,000 attendees of the conference. But the U.S. has failed to provide a promised US$30 billion in promised foreign aid that could help provide protect Africa's water, increase that continents grain production and educate African children, he said. "We're here today to save lives. It's that's simple," Stronach said.Stronach and Mercer were at the conference to promote a "Spread the Net" program for purchasing and distributing bed nets in Africa to help protect children from mosquitoes. "More African children under the age of five die from malaria than any other cause," she said. Mosquitoes spread malaria, which kills 3,000 children in Africa every day. The program, which aims to get individuals to buy 500,000 bed nets for distribution in Liberia and Rwanda, is the brainchild of Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, a famed economist and author of The End of Poverty. The bed nets cost $10 each. Malaria is epidemic in Rwanda, Sachs told the conference, with "children dying in huge numbers because of the lack of something as simple as a long-lasting insecticide-treated bed net." "There is no excuse in the 21st century for people to be dying in the millions because they don't have what it takes to stay alive," Sachs said. Education, and helping African parents increase their ability to earn money and support their families, is key to reducing poverty, he noted. Six simple things that can make a big difference, he said, are: Helping people grow more food;controlling preventable diseases like malaria; building clinics; ensuring safe supplies of water;building schools and providing meals; and providing communities with the ability to connect through phone service and the Internet. Investing in the fight against poverty now will cost much less than paying for the consequences of not acting later, Clinton noted."One in four of all the worlds deaths this year, including huge numbers -- millions of them children -- will come from aids, TB, malaria and infections related to dirty water," Clinton said."All of the things we can do are much cheaper than dealing with the aftermath of calamity,'' he said. "And they are also parenthetically are much cheaper than going to war.''"About half of us -- half the world's people -- still live on less than $2 a day," Clinton noted. "A billion people live on less than a dollar a day. A billion people of the six billion or so who live on earth go to bed hungry at night -- many of them children." Military Waste In Our Drinking Water (8/4/2006)
The U.S. military is poisoning the very citizens it is supposed to protect in the name of national security. Producing more hazardous waste annually than the five largest international chemical companies combined, U.S. military weaponry production generates over one-third of our nation's toxic waste, and is one of the most widespread violators of environmental laws. In 2003 the Defense Department exempted the military from environmental laws, resulting in the pollution of our Nation’s air and water. Along with a host of toxic chemicals, metals and radioactive waste, trichloroethylene (TCE), a known carcinogen and the most widespread industrial contaminant in American drinking water, can be traced to the US Military. TCE is linked to kidney cancer, impaired neurological function, reproductive and developmental damage, and autoimmune disease. The Pentagon is responsible for the TCE contamination of over 1,400 properties.

UN accused of Ignoring 500,000 Chernobyl deaths
The United Nations has ignored evidence of deaths, cancers, and mutations after the Chernobyl accident. A series of reports suggest that at least 30,000 people are expected to die of cancers linked directly to severe radiation exposure in 1986 and up to 500,000 people may have already died as a result of the world’s worst environmental catastrophe. Yet the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency and World Heath Organization say that only 50 deaths can be directly attributed to the disaster, and that, at most, 4,000 people may eventually die from the accident on Apr. 26, 1986.

Ancient Egyptian City In the Grand Canyon?
An Egyptian tomb in the Grand Canyon similar to the Valley of Kings in Luxor, Egypt? An article published on the front page of the Phoenix Gazette on April 5,1909, claimed that just such an Egyptian rock-cut cave was found! - The Gazette article, dated April 5,1909, starts with four headlines, "Explorations in Grand Canyon", "Mysteries of Immense Rich Cavern Being Brought to Light", "JORDAN IS ENTHUSED" and "Remarkable Finds Indicate Ancient People Migrated From Orient." (...) "Over a hundred feet from the entrance is the cross-hall, several hundred feet long, in which are found the idol, or image, of the people's god, sitting cross-legged, with a lotus flower or lily in each hand. The cast of the face is oriental, and the carving shows a skillful hand, and the attire is remarkably well preserved, as is everything in this cavern. The idol most resembles Buddha, though the scientists are not certain as to what religious worship it represents. Taking into consideration everything found thus far, it is possible that this worship most resembles the ancient people of Tibet. Surrounding this idol are smaller images, some very beautiful in form; others crooked-necked and distorted shapes, symbolical, probably, of good and evil. (...) While it cannot be discounted that the entire story is an elaborate newspaper hoax, the fact that it is on the front page, names the prestigious Smithsonian Institution, and gives a highly detailed story that goes on for several pages, lends a great deal to its credibility. What appears to be going on in this case is that the Smithsonian Institution is covering up what is an archaeological discovery of great importance, and radically changes the current views that there was no transoceanic contact in Pre-Colombian times, and that all American Indians, on both continents, are descended from ice age explorers who came across the Bering Straits. Is the idea that ancient Egyptians came to the Arizona area in the ancient past so objectionable and preposterous that is must be covered up? Perhaps the Smithsonian Institution is more interested in maintaining the status quo then rocking the boat with astonishing new discoveries that totally overturn the previously accepted academic teachings. The Butterfly
In the laws of science and quantum physics, everything that exists in the universe is energy, intimately vibrating and interacting. In this world there is no separation, and so when Deepak Chopra MD talks about the natural world as an extension of all living beings, such statements as ‘the trees are an extension of our own lungs’ make perfect sense. If we all recognise this reality in our hearts, how could we destroy rainforests without feeling it is our lungs that we are affecting? Quantum theory supports the idea that when we act without reverence in the outer world, the inner self is affected – and conversely, positive transformation of our inner selves will have major positive benefits in the outer world. Free Energy in Sight?
‘We are issuing a challenge to the scientific community: test our technology and report your findings to the world.’ The Steorn Challenge - Imagine a world with an infinite supply of free energy. An Irish company believes it has come up with the technology that will provide exactly that."This technology will replace traditional energy sources. It has the potential to be absolutely huge and change everyone’s life," says Sean McCarthy, Chief Executive of the Dublin-based company, Steorn. So confident are the inventors that the company placed an advertisement in The Economist magazine saying: ‘We have developed a technology that produces free, clean and constant energy. We’re issuing a challenge to the scientific community: test our technology and report your findings to the world.’ Over 3,500 scientists have responded to the Steorn Challenge. "We expected a good response because of its potential and its implications for the world," says Sean McCarthy. "The next stage is to go through the applications and select a jury of 12 of the world’s best-qualified scientists, who are prepared to publish their findings, however they turn out." The new technology is based on the interaction of magnetic fields and it can be applied to virtually everything from mobile telephones, cars and computers, to heating and lighting, public transport, agriculture and industry. A bizarre case: Girl in far western Nepal emits 'glass pieces' from forehead
NEPALGUNJ, Sept 21 - In what seems to be a bizarre case that has baffled medical practitioners, a young girl in the district of Kailai, far western Nepal, has been emitting transparent solid objects, purported to be glass pieces, from her forehead. A team of doctors from the Nepalgunj Teaching Hospital (NTH) at Kohalpur Wednesday began their research on 12-year-old Sarita Bista, who has been excreting glass pieces from the side of her forehead for the last three years. According to family sources, Bista, who is currently under constant medical observation, has emitted more than 130 "glass pieces", averaging 4 cm in length and 1 mm breadth, since January 18, 2006. (...) The doctors claim this to be the first case of its kind in the history of medical science. "There are many examples where cranial bones have grown unnaturally to give the impression of horns. But the human body does not produce glass,” Dr Kiduwai said, adding, "It's a strange case." The riddle of the rotating spheres – Stones baffle NASA scientists!96!10!0C394463B0D1/WF11/MysterySpheres/
Stones, which are billions of years old and rotate on their axes, captured the attention of Mr. John Hund of Pietersburg fifteen years ago. Review previously published reports about Hund's journey to the Gestoptesfontein mine near Ottosdal in the Northern Province where he found a stone just like the one he read about and saw in the Klerksdorp museum. While playing with the stone on a very flat surface at a restaurant one day, Hund realized it was very well balanced. He took it to the California Space Institute at the University of California to have tests done to determine just how well balanced it was. "It turned out that the balance is so fine, it exceeded the limit of their measuring technology and these are the guys who make gyrocompasses for NASA. The stone is balanced to within one-hundred thousandths of an inch from absolute perfection," explains Hund. Nobody knows what these stones are. One NASA scientist told Hund that they do not have the technology to create anything as finely balanced as this. He said the only way that either nature or human technology could create something so finely balanced would be in zero gravity. CLIP To see a picture click on Anomalous Artifacts at

Subject: Feedback to The Perfect Storm Series #8: Is America on the Edge of Tyranny... or Freedom?
Date: 06 Nov 2006

Greetings, Jean,

I just read through your new compilation. Much to think about and comment upon, as always. I especially liked the feedback from other readers. You seem to attract a very gifted readership, whose perceptions and thoughts help me to remember to stay connected to the Light, to Love, to always put that first. Not so easy, living in the USA, these days. I'm visiting Buenos Aires soon, planning to be sending articles to on the union activity down South of the Border.

I especially want to comment on David Fiske's letter. Several years ago, I think in one of my feedback letters to you, I mentioned the book by Chet Snow I think called "Mass Dreams of the Future." The people he worked with --mostly in the USA, as I recall--saw three different futures for themselves--all seen individually, through one point of consciousness, one person's eyes, but falling into 3 distinct futures: one, a survivalist future, with individual armed and protected encampments; another, a planet on which all biological life had been killed through the humans' wars and poisons, and the humans lived in self-sustaining glass globes, protected from the dead and poisonous planet outside. One person, seeing that future, said it was a very lonely life. The third future is the one of the few humans who have earned the right to live on our Earth, our giving Mother, respected, loved, and cherished. Her air clean and pure again, her oceans too. And no animals are ever hurt. I personally think this is key, and that much rests on this.

I agree with your response to Auntie Rainbow, also. I think the search for inner peace is best balanced with a concern for social justice also. It hurts sometimes to choose the path of compassion.

I very much liked Aannsha's article on forgiveness. I've been watching some David Icke videos on google video, and he talks about the vibration of emotions/thoughts of all manifestations of fear--guilt, resentment, etc--being a slow, heavy energetic vibration, while the energy of Love is a fast, high vibrational frequency. Asking for help is important at this time, for me at least. Asking to stay connected, to remember that we ARE connected to the Source, to Divine Love, at all times.

Thank you again, Jean, for all your work in the service of Truth and Love.

Note from Jean: The 3 possible scenarios for the future are quite interesting. So I looked for them on the Web and found this below ...

(...) In an interview in the Leading Edge Newspaper, Dr. Snow suggests that the future is not set in stone, and that the mind can somehow alter the timeline: I believe, by changing our present behavior, we can change our future. We can go back in time, through past-life regression, and heal relationships in the past, and our present will then change because our vibration is no longer the same. As you think, so you are. The mind is the builder. I encourage my clients to work now, in the present, on the pathways they are forming which will build their future. People ask, "Where do I go? Where are the safe lands?" I say to them, "At least get away from water." Let synchronicities guide you. You will be drawn to a place of safety for you. The new energy on the planet is about service, but not in a servile way. Be each other's servant, each giving your best and receiving the best from others. Dr. Snow describes two different regions of time on which he focused: 2100 to 2200 AD and 2300 to 2400 AD. At these times, the population is only about two billion, and there seems to be four different societies. Twenty-five percent of the test group whom he progressed into the future found themselves either living on a space station orbiting Earth or on another planet. Their society was high tech and had contact with friendly extraterrestrials. Thirty-percent of the group lived on Earth in a high tech society with machines, and they lived in domes or underground. They wore jumpsuits and did not seem happy. Eighteen percent of the group were vegetarians, wore lose, flowing robes, and lived happily in harmony with nature. Twenty percent of the group lived in small rustic towns resembling villages of the 19th century. They wore jeans, boots, and tunics, raising farm animals and eating meat. A small percentage of the experimental group reported living in the ruins of major cities like New York and existing in a primitive fashion. CLIP

Rumsfeld and Hussein: Partners in Crime

By David Swanson -- t r u t h o u t | Perspective

06 November 2006

The White House has arranged to announce a guilty verdict for Saddam Hussein two days before the November 7, 2006, elections and, no doubt, plans to finally murder him. Meanwhile an appeals process is delaying, until at least five days after the elections, release of photos of members of the US military and its contractors raping and murdering children and adults at Abu Ghraib.

While use of the death penalty is one of many American practices that much of the world views as barbaric, there can be little doubt that Saddam Hussein is guilty of major crimes stretching far beyond those he's been tried for, and including many in which the United States has been complicit.

A famous image shows Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein. There's nothing wrong with shaking hands with a dictator. It's potentially far more productive than slaughtering 650,000 of his nation's people. Bush should be shaking hands and talking with the leaders of Iran and North Korea rather than threatening to destroy their countries. The trouble is that Rumsfeld wasn't meeting with Hussein in order to promote democracy. Rumsfeld was there on December 20, 1983, as a special envoy for President Ronald Reagan to assist in Iraq's efforts to kill Iranians, including through the use of chemical weapons - an illegal practice that Rumsfeld has more recently used himself against civilians in Iraq, most notably in Fallujah.

The Reagan administration knew that Iraq was using chemical weapons. Nonetheless, following Rummy's visits in December of 1983 and March of 1984, the United States established full diplomatic ties with Iraq on November 26, 1984. Reagan and Rummy and the rest of the truly Neo cons also supplied Iraq with helicopters and other "dual use" equipment and materials (including anthrax), provided intelligence and satellite data to assist Iraq's bombing raids on Iran, prevented passage of strong Senate legislation cutting off assistance to Iraq, and prevented any UN Security Council resolution that would have directly condemned Iraq by insisting that Iran was also using chemical weapons. When Iraq used chemical weapons to slaughter Kurds in Halabja in March of 1988, the Reagan administration falsely blamed Iran. The George Bush Sr. administration continued to supply Iraq with weapons, despite Iraq's then-real chemical and biological weapons programs, until the day before Iraq invaded Kuwait, August 2, 1990.

For all the crimes that Saddam Hussein committed, with and without US assistance or approval, it is noteworthy that there was no terrorism in the nation he controlled, not until we spent over $400 billion of our US tax dollars to transform Iraq into the "central front in the War on Terror" and a training ground for a generation of terrorists.

In the course of making the world less safe for democracy, Donald Rumsfeld has overseen the slaughter of 650,000 Iraqis and 3,000 Americans. He has targeted civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances. He has used white phosphorous as a weapon on civilian families. He has used depleted uranium and a new form of napalm. (When did melting the skin off children become a family value?) He has approved the hiding of prisoners from the Red Cross, the detention of Americans and non-Americans without charge or counsel, and the use of torture. Acceptable torture techniques were posted on the wall at Abu Ghraib in the form of a memo from Rumsfeld.

So, by all means, let's talk about Saddam Hussein's guilt and how much fun it will be to kill him. But let's remember who supported him for decades. And let's ask ourselves what the 650,000 Iraqis we've killed already were guilty of. Wasn't the plan to liberate them, not murder them? Here is guilt aplenty for Rumsfeld, Bush, and Cheney, and the corporate interests they serve.

This Was a Guilty Verdict on America as Well - By Robert Fisk (Nov 6)
So America's one-time ally has been sentenced to death for war crimes he committed when he was Washington's best friend in the Arab world. America knew all about his atrocities and even supplied the gas - along with the British, of course - yet there we were yesterday declaring it to be, in the White House's words, another "great day for Iraq". That's what Tony Blair announced when Saddam Hussein was pulled from his hole in the ground on 13 December 2003. And now we're going to string him up, and it's another great day. (...) And so by hanging this awful man, we hope - don't we? - to look better than him, to remind Iraqis that life is better now than it was under Saddam. Only so ghastly is the hell-disaster that we have inflicted upon Iraq that we cannot even say that. Life is now worse. Or rather, death is now visited upon even more Iraqis than Saddam was able to inflict on his Shias and Kurds and - yes, in Fallujah of all places - his Sunnis, too. So we cannot even claim moral superiority. For if Saddam's immorality and wickedness are to be the yardstick against which all our iniquities are judged, what does that say about us? We only sexually abused prisoners and killed a few of them and murdered some suspects and carried out a few rapes and illegally invaded a country which cost Iraq a mere 600,000 lives (...) The odd thing is that Iraq is now swamped with mass murderers, guilty of rape and massacre and throat-slitting and torture in the years since our "liberation" of Iraq. Many of them work for the Iraqi government we are currently supporting, democratically elected, of course. And these war criminals, in some cases, are paid by us, through the ministries we set up under this democratic government. And they will not be tried. Or hanged. That is the extent of our cynicism. And our shame. Have ever justice and hypocrisy been so obscenely joined?

When All Else Fails...… Baghdad Burning Blog (November 05, 2006)
Execute the dictator. It’s that simple. When American troops are being killed by the dozen, when the country you are occupying is threatening to break up into smaller countries, when you have militias and death squads roaming the streets and you’ve put a group of Mullahs in power- execute the dictator.Everyone expected this verdict from the very first day of the trial. There was a brief interlude when, with the first judge, it was thought that it might actually be a coherent trial where Iraqis could hear explanations and see what happened. That was soon over with the prosecution’s first false witness. Events that followed were so ridiculous; it’s difficult to believe them even now. The sound would suddenly disappear when the defense or one of the defendants got up to speak. We would hear the witnesses but no one could see them- hidden behind a curtain, their voices were changed. People who were supposed to have been dead in the Dujail incident were found to be very alive.Judge after judge was brought in because the ones in court were seen as too fair. They didn’t instantly condemn the defendants (even if only for the sake of the media). The piece de resistance was the final judge they brought in. His reputation vies only that of Chalabi- a well-known thief and murderer who ran away to Iran to escape not political condemnation, but his father’s wrath after he stole from the restaurant his father ran. The Beginning of the End of the Nightmare?

November 6, 2006

by Steve Bhaerman

The big verdict today is not on Saddam Hussein, but on George Who's-Not-Sane

During the darkest days of the Third Reich, a little old man would walk to the newsstand each day, glance at the front page, then walk away. After weeks or maybe months, the news stand owner approached him. "Are you looking for anything in particular?
"I'm looking for an obituary," the old man replied.
"Oh," said the news stand owner, "you'll find that on the obituary page."
"Not the one I'm looking for," replied the old man as he walked away.

Like the millions of others who grasped the nefariousness of the Bush regime from pretty much the beginning, I have spent the past six years looking for a sign of hope that a critical mass of Americans understood that the perpetrations and intentions of this cadre have less to do with right and left than they have to do with right and wrong. Sadly, the Democrats have been more of a hindrance than a help in moving forward the "up-wising."

Both Gore and Kerry -- and of course the Democratic Central Committee -- failed to recognize that the voter repression, miscounting and fraud in both 2000 and 2004 constituted a de facto coup. The Democrats‚ general approach to confronting the Republicans‚ boldface lying, cheating, manipulation, and cultivation of ignorance and fear is reminiscent of the archetypal out-of-town tourist timidly approaching a New Yorker: "Excuse me, could you tell me what time it is, or should I just go f--- myself?"

Now, after the courageous Rolling Stone article by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on voting fraud, even the mainstream Democrats have awakened -- possibly too late to prevent widespread misdeeds this election, but certainly in a better position than two years ago. At least these "dimocrats" are now aware of -- and speaking out loud about -- the clear and present danger of fascism. But even that belated courage doesn't address the one criticism of the Democrats which could -- if anything does -- keep them from an overwhelming victory tomorrow: We know what they're against, but what are they for?

I've been making calls on behalf of over the past few days to folks in key Congressional districts, and the one thing that has stopped me cold hearing it from voters "first ear" is how the Republicans are associated with "moral issues" and the Democrats with gay marriage. Nowhere do we hear, the Democrats favor a sane foreign policy where war is not the first option, the Democrats favor an energy policy where we find alternatives to oil dependency, the Democrats favor taking big money out of elections so we the people can have greater representation, the Democrats favor breaking up the media monopolies so we get real news for a change, the Democrats believe in treating all citizens with respect and not discriminating against gay people, and in fact the Democrats represent the values that are the heart and soul of America -- individual liberty, protection of the commonwealth, and being a stand for truth, justice and freedom. Oh, and by the way, the latest careful rereading of the New Testament proves JESUS WAS A LIBERAL.

The Democrats -- in part because they too are caught up in the "money, money über alles" political system, but also because their "leadership" seems to lack courage, vision and a faith in their own beliefs -- have failed miserably to articulate boldly the values that 75% of Americans believe in, and instead have allowed themselves to be defined by Karl Rove. Consider this ... two thirds of Americans disapprove of the job George Bush is doing, and at the end of the day tomorrow the Republicans MAY STILL control one, if not both houses of Congress.

Awakening From the Nightmare -- Finally?

So, what's the good news? What might indicate the beginning of the end of the nightmare? Well, while the headlines conveniently blare the conviction of Saddam Hussein, the other headlines render an equally-damning verdict on the Bush regime. In an unprecedented editorial, the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Times -- the newspapers for the armed forces that tend to reflect the opinions of otherwise voiceless service-members -- have called for the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary.

Citing the failed policies and the troops that have more and more come to see themselves as targets in a thankless mission, the editorial acknowledges how unheard of it is for the military to question publicly its own military venture. Initially, it was just retired generals who spoke up, but,

"Now, however, a new chorus of criticism is beginning to resonate. Active-duty military leaders are starting to voice misgivings about the war's planning, execution and dimming prospects for success.

"... when the nation's current military leaders start to break publicly with their defense secretary, then it is clear that he is losing control of the institution he ostensibly leads."

The article concludes:

"Rumsfeld has lost credibility with the uniformed leadership, with the troops, with Congress and with the public at large. His strategy has failed, and his ability to lead is compromised. And although the blame for our failures in Iraq rests with the secretary, it will be the troops who bear its brunt.

"This is not about the midterm elections. Regardless of which party wins Nov. 7, the time has come, Mr. President, to face the hard bruising truth:

"Donald Rumsfeld must go."

Let's take a moment to "grok in fullness" the implications of this extraordinary "preemptive" editorial. First of all, it may as well be a call for George Bush to resign, since he, Cheney and Rumsfeld seem to be the Siamese Triplets of the Apocalypse, and Bush just recently expressed full faith in Rumsfeld. The second piece of good news is that a significant number of our own military people are not sold on the Administration's suicidal / homicidal path. Thirdly, let's examine the precedent. When was the last time a military publication representing the "voice" of the military in this country asked for their boss to resign? The answer is, not in our lifetime, and as far as I can tell, not ever.

But the most important implication of the editorial is this: Should the President decide that the popular will is not to his liking, and that he chooses to assume the dictatorial powers he recently legislated to himself, he cannot count on the unequivocal support of the military. While undoubtedly such a contingency would throw the nation into a turmoil not experienced since the Civil War (notwithstanding the "almost coup" to depose FDR in 1933), there's a heartening indication that there are those at all echelons of power who have not been "ethically cleansed."

And so, as Karl Rove and company cart out every dirty trick they can think of to promote injustice and disinformation, we can take heart in one thing: No matter what the final tally tomorrow, the tide has turned on the "turd blossom" and his ilk. Even if the Democratic Party's so-called leadership is the last to get it, there is a new vitality in the body politic. It's not just the tens of thousands of volunteers who've been making calls on behalf of MoveOn not because they love the Democrats but because they love democracy, and see this election as a chance to demonstrate the tide has turned. It's that finally, America is awakening from the nightmare.

The wall of lies is crumbling, and will fall like the Berlin Wall. Now it remains to be seen over the next four years whether the Democratic Party or some more relevant force will leave the familiar harbors of "left" and "right" and come front and center to reclaim the heart and soul of America.

May the FARCE Be With You,

Steve Bhaerman

Armagideon Time: Bush's Nuclear Folly and the National Security Lie

By Chris Floyd, TO UK Correspondent -- t r u t h o u t | Perspective

07 November 2006

Last Friday, just hours after the New York Times revealed that the Bush administration had posted advanced plans for building nuclear weapons on a public web site for months, six Arab nations formally announced they were launching nuclear programs of their own. The potential for disaster posed by this development is almost immeasurable: everything from Chernobyl-style accidents to the theft or transfer of nuclear material to terrorists to the near-certainty of new atomic arsenals appearing in the powder-keg of the Middle East.

The announcement also signals the final and utter failure of the Bush administration's demented "non-proliferation" strategy, which has been centered around a relentless, deliberate drive to gut existing nuclear arms treaties in order to free the United States to enhance its own arsenal. This open denigration of legal strictures on the development of the most dangerous technology on earth has been accompanied by a cynical inconsistency. Bush has heaped monetary and military rewards on India and Pakistan for their illegally developed nuclear arsenals, while threatening war on Iran for what has so far been a peaceful nuclear power program carried out in accordance with international treaties - and doing nothing at all to head off North Korea's now apparently successful bid for atomic weapon capability.

It is a record of astonishing recklessness and incompetence, one that has plunged the world into a new abyss of instability, insecurity and the ever-increasing likelihood of mass death and horror on an unfathomable scale. And the criminal negligence of Bush and his Congressional rubberstamps in dumping plans from Iraq's almost-complete, pre-1991 nuclear weapons program on the Internet - solely for partisan political advantage - has exacerbated these dangers by several magnitudes.

On Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency announced that six nations had given notification of their intention to pursue nuclear programs, the Times (UK) reports: Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, which had revealed its nuclear ambitions last month, but had not given official notice to the IAEA. As the Times notes, arms experts view the announcement as "a stunning reversal of policy" in the Arab world, which has long called for a nuclear-free Middle East - a stance aimed at dismantling Israel's large if nominally secret nuclear arsenal and preventing Iran from acquiring atomic weaponry.

But ill winds are blowing through the Middle East from all directions, and the six nations are seeking shelter from the storm - a "security hedge," as proliferation analyst Mark Fitzpatrick of the International Institute for Strategic Studies told the Times. One of the major factors behind the turnaround is certainly Bush's wanton destruction of Iraq, the Arab world's traditional bulwark against Persian Iran. Not only has the American blunderbuss cleared the way for unprecedented Iranian influence in the region - not least in Baghdad itself - it is also enflaming sectarian, political, ethnic and social tensions across the Arab lands.

And in the case of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, there is also the desire to avoid becoming yet another target of "regime change" from the "full spectrum dominance" gang that is still, well, dominant in the White House under Dick Cheney. In Cairo and Riyadh they will not have forgotten how in 2002, top Pentagon adviser Richard Perle - then chairman of the Defense Policy Board, now a rather fat rat leaving the sinking ship of Bushism - sponsored a presentation calling for the American conquest of Saudi oil fields on the way to capturing the strategic "prize" of Egypt: one of the many presentations and papers of the Bush Faction and its neo-con outriders in which the Arab world is regarded as so much raw meat to be processed and repackaged as the Beltway poobahs see fit.

But the radioactive core of these concerns is Israel's outlaw nuclear arsenal, hundreds of missiles strong, capable of wiping any and every country in the region "off the map," to quote the widespread misquote of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in one of his rabble-rousing fulminations. The Israeli arsenal serves as a veritable breeder reactor, generating the fear and strategic necessity that drive surrounding nations to follow suit. These anxieties have of course been elevated by the intensified bellicosity and reckless disregard for Arab lives displayed by the hardline Israeli government against Lebanon this summer - and day after day in Gaza.

It's true that the six Arab nations told the IAEA they wanted nuclear capability solely for peaceful purposes: to run desalinization plants, for example, or to provide cheap, abundant energy for their economies. (Perhaps the supposedly oil-glutted Saudis, who trotted out the latter rationale, know something they're not telling us about "peak oil" and such.) But it's also true that this technology can always be weaponized - as the Bush administration never ceases to remind us when lambasting Iran for its nuclear program.

Of course, converting a peaceful, public energy program into a covert weapons development scheme is much easier if you have a "cookbook" showing you how to do it. And that's exactly how the Bush administration's Iraqi data dump was described by European experts. With six new entrants in the nuclear sweepstakes - just a fraction of the 30 nations that IAEA head Mohamed ElBaradei says "have the capacity to develop nuclear weapons in a short time" - the ramifications of the administration's nuke blogging are far more serious than the near-total media and political silence that has followed the revelations would indicate. How could this have happened? And more importantly, why did it happen and what does it really mean? Here's how the deal went down.

Last March, in a bid to generate media smoke from overheated right-wing bloggers flailing their way ignorantly through raw intelligence data, the Bush Faction dumped thousands upon thousands of captured Saddam-era Iraqi documents into a public web archive. There was absolutely zero intelligence value to be gained from the exercise, as the administration's own intelligence experts repeatedly warned. Then again, history has shown us just how scantly the Bush Gang regards careful intelligence analysis; as in the run-up to the Iraq invasion, what they wanted was cherry-picked garbage that could be used for partisan propaganda.

And so the sewage pipe of the unsifted Iraqi intel was opened, in hopes of generating a few stories that might dominate a news cycle here and there with "revelations" that could provide even the most tenuous "justification" for the administration's pre-war mendacities about Iraq's non-existent WMD threat and its equally spurious ties to 9/11 and al Qaeda. As we've seen in many other cases - such as the long-running spy fiction thriller, "Atta in Prague" - the barest micron of a hint of a whisper from some unnamed, uncorroborated source is enough for the warmongers and their sycophants to feast upon for years.

But this trove of dross has produced no propaganda gold, and with good reason: the archives cannot yield what is not there. There are no records documenting active WMD programs, or even dormant WMD programs, because there had been no such programs in Iraq since the 1991 Gulf War - a fact that the western intelligence agencies, and the Clinton and Bush White Houses, knew very well, because they had been told of this in 1995 by the man in charge of the programs and their destruction: Saddam's own son-in-law, Hussein Kamel.

However, as the New York Times reports, there was a good deal of material in the archives on Iraq's pre-1991 WMD programs. These included, says the NYT, "detailed accounts of Iraq's secret nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war. The documents, the experts say, constitute a basic guide to building an atom bomb." They contain "charts, diagrams, equations and lengthy narratives about bomb building that nuclear experts who have viewed them say go beyond what is available elsewhere on the Internet and in other public forums."

One of the most important aspects of the information is that it spells out many of the mistakes and wrong turns that Iraqi scientists encountered on their road to the bomb. The handy roadmap provided by Bush will allow new aspirants for atomic weaponry to avoid these pitfalls and accelerate their programs accordingly. Secret nuclear weapons programs once took decades to complete, as in Pakistan, India and North Korea, or else simply sputtered out from technical ignorance, as in Libya. Now much of this knowledge gap has been bridged by the Bush administration, cutting years of trial and error out of the process.

This potentially deadly data has been cast forth upon a world where long-effective non-proliferation structures are either collapsing or already dead. From the very beginning, the Bush administration deliberately set out to overthrow the old "containment" treaties that had held the demon of nuclear war at bay for decades. The administration was adamant that no shackles should hold back its expansion of the entirely ineffective but crony-enriching boondoggle known as "missile defense." Plans for "enhancing" the nation's nuclear arsenal with new, more "useable" tactical nukes, and weaponizing the global commons of outer space were also stated goals of the militarists who dominate the administration: the "Project for a New Century" crowd, led by Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, who spelled out their disdain for arms treaties and their plans for an aggressive nuclear weapons revamp in speeches and publications well before the unelected Bush was shoe-horned into the White House by the Supreme Court.

Once in office, Bush "unsigned" the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban treaty and ash-canned the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty - the cornerstone of nuclear containment for a generation. In their place, Bush and his "unitary executive" counterpart in Russia, Vladimir Putin, signed the ludicrous "Moscow Treaty" in 2002. This worthless rag - which covers less than a single typewritten page - is perhaps the most cynical sham in international diplomacy since the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

The treaty sets a nominal limit on the number of nuclear warheads actually mounted on working missiles and bombers, as the National Resources Defense Council reports. But this limit is operative for one day only - December 31, 2012, the day the treaty expires. "Before and after that date, the number of deliverable nuclear warheads could exceed the treaty's maximum 'limit' of 2,200 'operational' warheads," the NRDC notes. "Both countries would be free to keep thousands of 'reserve' warheads in storage, which could be remounted on delivery systems within weeks or months."

There were no other limits placed on the world's two largest nuclear arsenals, nor does the treaty require "the destruction of a single nuclear warhead, missile, silo, bomber or submarine," the NRDC reports. It places no restrictions at all on tactical nuclear weapons: the ones most likely to be used in battle - and the ones most likely to be pilfered by "non-state actors." Nor does the treaty include any interim benchmarks for eliminating weapons or provisions for monitoring compliance. Why should it? It only requires that on the expiration date, both sides temporarily mothball enough weapons to reach the arbitrary limit - then start loading them up again the next day.

Meanwhile, the administration has made a mockery of the 1970 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. As noted, Bush has embraced the nuclear weapons programs of three renegade nations that remained outside the NPT - India, Pakistan and Israel - while attacking nations that have remained within the treaty's allowances for carefully monitored peaceful nuclear energy programs. And Bush has of course continued the practice of all of his predecessors in arrogantly ignoring the obligations which the treaty placed on existing nuclear powers to liquidate their own stockpiles and work toward an international disarmament agreement.

As with the US Constitution, the Geneva Conventions, the UN Charter and the Magna Carta, the Bush Faction regards the NPT as a "quaint relic" to be evoked - or discarded - according to the political needs of the moment. The concept of a binding law - even to protect the American people and the world from the nightmare of unbridled nuclear proliferation - means nothing to the Bushists. For them, the unfettered exercise of executive power - and the attendant wealth and privilege it brings - overrides all other values and considerations.

And now, in heedless pursuit of this ultimate value, George W. Bush and his political allies have given every terrorist, "rogue" state, and aspiring nuclear state in the world unprecedented access to advanced plans for building a nuclear weapon. Bush has done more to actualize his much-trumpeted scenario of a "mushroom cloud" rising over American cities than any other group in the world: more than al Qaeda, more than the mullahs of Iran, more than the "unitary executive" of North Korea, Kim Il-Jong.

Only a sociopathic idiot of the highest order would dump raw intelligence about weapons systems onto the Internet without even examining it first. What's more, the Bush Party knew for a certainty that there was very dangerous material lurking in the archive. As the NYT reports: "Last spring, after the site began posting old Iraqi documents about chemical weapons, United Nations arms-control officials in New York won the withdrawal of a report that gave information on how to make tabun and sarin, nerve agents that kill by causing respiratory failure."

Those particular documents were finally pulled - after finding their way into how many hard drives of Islamic extremists, homegrown white-power nuts, or freakish death cults like Aum Shinrikyo? - but the archive stayed wide open. Why? Because the Bush Party fanatics still hoped to squeeze some propaganda value out of it. And even after the IAEA complained about the nuclear data on the site late last month, the administration took no action. Not until the New York Times story was about to appear did the Bushists finally take down the site, to lessen the political embarrassment.

So who is responsible for this criminal idiocy? Let's name names:

Representative Peter Hoekstra (R-Michigan), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, who led the campaign for the web site - and now, predictably, with breathtaking, Perle-like hypocrisy, is criticizing the White House for "not doing it right." Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kansas), Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who joined Hoekstra in the formal request for the document dump. John Negroponte, Director of National Intelligence, who clearly realized the danger and stupidity of such a web site, but cravenly approved it anyway. George Walker Bush, Idiot in Chief, whose political handlers pressured Negroponte into giving his reluctant approval and launching the "cookbook" for nuclear weaponry into the public domain.

What then can we make of such shallow fools, and their years of chest-thumping about "national security" and "keeping America safe?" The plain, unavoidable, indisputable fact of the matter is that they do not care about the security of the American people. This fact has been confirmed over and over by the public record of their policies and actions, as shown above. And it is underscored by this latest outrage. Had some intelligence agent or other government official posted such incendiary material on a web site on the sly, they would rightly be condemned as criminals, even traitors. Hoekstra, Roberts, Negroponte and Bush stand in that same rank.

The Bush Faction's remaining claim to political power - that they are the "party of national security" - is a gargantuan lie. Those who believe them, those who support them, those who vote for them are tying a noose around their own necks, and the necks of all their fellow Americans.

War on Iran: Unleashing Armageddon in the Middle East

By Dr. Elias Akleh

11/10/06 "Information Clearing House" -- -- In mid 1970s the American Power Elite drew a “Grand Plan” to control and to monopolize global oil and nuclear energy resources, for he who controls energy resources determines the fate of nations. The base of this “Grand Plan” is the invasion of energy rich countries to directly control their resources, and to create subservient governments that would exploit their own people as cheap labor to harvest energy for the United States.

The collapse of the Soviet Union had created a window of opportunity for the United States to ensure and to affirm its global superiority through expansion and controlling energy resources without any real opposition. The attacks of 911 were necessary requirements for the Bush administration to wage a “global war against terror” that would serve as a cover up for American hegemony. President Bush borrowed Mussolini’s fascist motto of “If you are not with me, you are against me” and turned it into “You are either with us or with the terrorist” to terrorize weaker nations into accepting American expansions.

Part of the “Grand Plan”, which deals with the Arab World (Middle East) and South East Asia, was handed down to the Bush/Cheney administration for execution. The invasions and destructions of Afghanistan and Iraq are just the beginning. Iran, Syria, and Lebanon are next. Controlling Iran is very important to the American administration. Iran sits on a lake of oil and has large deposits of uranium that, when mined and refined, could make Iran a super global power. Controlling Iran leads to the containment of China (America’s greatest competitor), who depends heavily on Iranian oil to satisfy its growing hunger for energy. Geographically Iran makes the shortest and the most economical route for Kazakhstan’s oil pipeline from the Caspian Sea ,north, to the Persian Gulf south with all the oil-tankers traffic. Iran also fits perfectly within the line of American hegemony in South East Asia. Listening to Bush’s speeches – especially his speech to the United Nation last September 2006- one can detect his “enthusiasm” for “spreading democracy and freedom” into the “despotic Middle East” with Iraq as an example.

The Bush/Cheney administration started its overt aggression against Iran immediately after 911 attacks. Bush described Iran as one of the “axis of evil” sponsoring “terrorist” groups such as the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas, who are in reality defending themselves against Israeli aggression. After the American invasion of Iraq the American administration accused Iran of instigating a civil war in Iraq by supporting Shiites against Sunnis, and of opening its borders wide for terrorists to enter Iraq. The administration is accusing Iran of building a nuclear bomb, and is continuously threatening its government to abandon its nuclear “ambitions” or else face dire consequences including nuclear strikes (a paradox of using nuclear weapon to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons). Condoleezza Rice, the Secretary of State described Iran as a “central bank for world terrorism” that is threatening the stability of the Middle East.

American media had joined the administration into demonizing Iran and its government. Iran is described as a fundamentalist theocracy, who seeks to revive the glory of ancient Persian Empire by establishing an Islamic “Caliphate” in the Middle East. Iran’s leaders are portrayed as extremists, who hate Americans for their freedom, and want to build nuclear bomb to attack the US. Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is described as an irrational, violent, mad Hitler-like anti-Semite, who hates Jews, denies the Holocaust, and wants to wipe Israel off the map. Ahmadinejad’s visit to the US last September (2006) to give a speech at the UN was received with a cold shoulder by the US. American officials in the UN and the American media boycotted his speech, while NBC’s Brian Williams and Newsweek’s Lally Weymouth interviewed him only to corner him about the Holocaust and wiping Israel off the map.

Bush/Cheney administration had rebuffed all Iranian attempts to negotiate, and refused to give Iran any guarantees that the US will not attack Iran if it stops its uranium enrichment. President Bush totally ignored President Ahmadinejad’s personal letter, and his call for a debate. The Washington Post, in June 18th 2006, reported Richard Hass, head of policy planning at the State Department at the time, as saying that at the wake of the US invasion of Iraq Iranian leaders offered the administration a proposal for a broad dialogue that included full cooperation on its nuclear programs, acceptance of the state of Israel, and halting support to Palestinian militants. The administration rejected this proposal since they already have plans for a regime change in Iran.

The administration’s attack plan started immediately after the invasion of Iraq. Spy stations were erected at the Iraqi/Iranian borders. The Congress had authorized the expenditure of $75 million to support Iranian opposition and to finance an anti-Iranian political campaign. Scott Ritter, former UN weapons inspector, reported in June 2005 and in his book “Target Iran” that the US has been using terrorist organizations (Mujahedeen el-Khalq, MEK), under the supervision of the CIA, to conduct covert terrorist operations in Iran. MEK has been officially designated as a terrorist organization by the US. Yet in 2004 Bush/Cheney administration pardoned the MEK making it the first terrorist organization to receive a “protected” status. The MEK terrorists were trained by the CIA in an American compound northeast of Baghdad, and then moved to Basra and established their base in Camp Habib, from which they launch their terrorists raids against the southern region of Iran.

Israel, on the other hand, criticized Iran’s nuclear program refusing to “live under the threat” of nuclear Iran. Israeli officials point to Ahmadinejad’s alleged threat to wipe Israel off the map as threat to their own existence, and a possible justification for a pre-emptive strike as a measure of self-defense. They continually threaten to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities the same way Israel did to Iraq’s nuclear reactor. Israel warned that Iran’s uranium enrichment is the red line that Israel will react to. Israel had sent its military operatives into the Kurdish region north of Iraq to establish training camps for the Kurds. The Kurds want to establish their free Kurdistan that extends from north Iran to east Turkey. Considering it their patriotic duty, and encouraged, financed and armed by the Israelis, the Kurds send their militants to conduct military operations into northern Iran.

Bush/Cheney administration is adamant on invading Iran. Invasion was originally planned to take place sometime during the end of April 2006 immediately after the end of the grace period UN gave to Iran to stop its nuclear program. The plan consisted of 5 days continuous aerial bombardment by joint air planes of Israel, UK, and US that might include tactical nuclear bunker buster bombs. Land invasion would follow from west (Iraq), from east (Afghanistan) and from sea (Persian Gulf from west and Gulf of Oman from south). The plan was to heavily bombard the Iranians into overthrowing their government.

In an attempt to stop this attack Iran flexed its military muscles in war games conducted in April 2006. Iran effectively demonstrated its capability of waging war on land, sea, and air with sophisticated weapons. Iran also conducted other war games in August 2006 in coordination with China and Russia on all of Iran’s geo-strategic borders giving a warning signal that any possible invasion of its territory would be very costly. The American administration discovered that it had underestimated Iran’s military power, and that Iran is a larger and a stronger country than the embargo-weakened Iraq. Therefore the administration decided to adjust its war plans and to bring in more allies such as EU and some Arab states.

Contrary to the misleading American propaganda about the threat of irrational extremist Iranian government Iranian leaders have been very pragmatic politicians, who seek peace, stability, and nuclear-free Middle East. There is no doubt that Iran has supported Palestinian families (victims of Israeli terror), Shiite Lebanese south of Lebanon, and Shiite Iraqis in an attempt to protect its own interests and to counter balance warring Israel, UK, and US. Israel had invaded all its neighboring countries while the UK and US had sent their troops across the globe to invade Afghanistan and Iraq to protect its own interests in the region. For many generations Iran was never involved in a colonial war and had never threatened other countries. Iran was defending itself during the eight years Iraq/Iran war of attrition that had been instigated by the US. Unlike the Israeli and American military threatening rhetoric Iranian leaders had always declared that they do not pose any threat to any other country, and that Iran is only seeking peace and prosperity for its own citizens. Iranian officials recognized that war is knocking on their doors when American troops invaded Iraq. They attempted to approach Bush/Cheney administration with dialogue and cooperation, but they were rebuffed violently.

The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad does not conform “ the picture of a madman” the American administration and media portray him to be, wrote Fareed Zakaria in his Newsweek (10/2/2006) article “What Iranians Least Expect”. “He was smug, even arrogant, sometimes offensive, but always calm and intelligent” continued Zakaria. Ahmadinejad is not the Jew-hater, Holocaust denier, intent on wiping Israel off the map as Bush keeps describing him. Ahmadinejad pointed to the Iranian Jewish community, who are living peacefully within Iran as any other Iranian citizens. Iran is the home for the largest Jewish community (25 thousands) in the Middle East outside Israel, who lived there for the last 3 thousand years since the rule of Cyrus the Great. Iranian government recognizes the Jews as a religious minority to be protected and represented by a PM, Maurice Mohtamed, in Iranian parliament. Iranians make a distinction between Jews and Zionists.

When Newsweek’s Lally Weymouth (October 2nd 2006) asked Ahmadinejad about the Holocaust he acknowledged it as a historical event by stating “We know this was a historical event that happened. But why is it that people who question it are persecuted and attacked?” He also questions the reasons why the Palestinians have to pay their country and their lives for what the Europeans had done. He questions the exploitation of the Holocaust to justify the usurpation of Palestinian land, their evacuation from their homeland and the destruction of their civilian homes, the targeted assassination of their freedom fighters, and the abduction and jailing of their democratically elected officials. “The Palestinian people, their lives are being destroyed today under the pretext of the Holocaust. Their lands have been occupied, usurped. What is their fault? What are they to be blamed for? Are they not human beings? Do they have no rights? What role did they play in the Holocaust?” Ahmadinejad answered NBC’s Brian Williams, who asked him about the Holocaust during an interview in September 20th, 2006. His acceptance of the Holocaust as a reality could not be any clearer than in his statement reported by the Washington Post December 9th 2005 “Is the killing of innocent Jewish people by Hitler, the reason for their (the Europeans’) support to the occupiers of Jerusalem?”

Ahmadinejad’s plans to build a nuclear bomb and use it to incinerate and “to wipe Israel off the map” as Tzipi Linvi – the Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister and Vice Prime Minister- likes to keep reminding the world of, is totally baseless. It is an intentional misinterpretation and distortion of Ahmadinejad’s speech. In the New York Times of June 11th, 2006 Juan Cole, a Middle East specialist at the University of Michigan, stated that “Ahmadinejad did not say he was going to wipe Israel off the map, because no such idiom exists in Persian. He did say he hoped its regime i.e. a Jewish-Zionist state occupying Jerusalem, would collapse.” Ahmadinejad was not threatening Israel; rather he was calling for the end of Zionist occupation of the city of Jerusalem. He – and the Iranian government- are intelligent politicians, who understand that striking Israel with one atomic bomb would lead Israel to shower Iran with its 200, or more, nuclear bombs, some of which are ready to be launched from submarines.

To avoid the seemingly inevitable war Iran had followed the diplomatic path with no avail. It opened all its nuclear facilities to the strictest and most detailed inspections by the IAEA, who stated that there was no evidence that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon. Iran proposed to halt its nuclear program if the US halts its threatening postures and gives guarantees that it would not attack Iran. The Bush/Cheney administration refused to give Iran any guarantees insisting that all options, including nuclear, are on the table. Ahmadinejad also called for peaceful negotiations and a nuclear-free Middle East in his speech to the UN in his September visit. Yet his speech was boycotted by the American officials and ignored by the American media. Lately Iran proposed to have an international consortium to supervise uranium enrichment in Iran to guarantee that its nuclear program is really for peaceful purposes only. This proposal was rejected by the EU for they all are aware of the American plans to invade Iran.

Iran had also turned to the international community – mainly anti-American countries- for political support through economical trade and common political interests. In 2004 Iran struck an oil deal with China Petrochemical Corp. (SINOPEC Group) to sell it 51% stake in Iran’s Yadavaran oil field near the border of Iraq. Iran also became Russia’s most important weapons customer. Iran had also gained the political support of at least 118 countries during the summit of the Nonaligned Movement (NAM) in Cuba in mid September 2006.

Iranian government, like any other prudent government in its place, has no alternative but to seriously consider the Israeli and American continuous military threats to its security and to prepare for the inevitable coming war. In a deterrent attempt Iran had conducted war games in April and August 2006 hoping that the American administration would reconsider its plans. It also positioned its weapons strategically on its borders and sea. Iranian arsenals include Iranian and Russian made submarines carrying their own mini submarines and submarine-to-ship missiles. Iranian naval forces had been updated with the latest military equipment and weaponry with its naval airborne forces including helicopters, minesweepers and the sophisticated fast Chinese “Silkworm” and “Sunburn” anti-ship missiles with the speed of 225 miles per hour. Iranian Patrol Torpedo Boats (PT) – such as the “Jashan PT”- are small boats designed to attack larger warships and are equipped with latest electronic systems and missiles with a range of 100km. Iran’s navy also has the largest hovercraft fleet in the world. On the land Iran has long range missiles (Shehab) and land-to-sea missiles (Kowsar) that can evade electronic jamming systems. Some of Iranian missiles are reported to be invisible to radar and can have multiple warheads with multiple payloads to hit multiple targets simultaneously.

Iran has also recently modified its air defense shield in order to shoot down incoming missiles and invading warplanes. Iran has about 20 Russian “Tor” and “S300” antiaircraft systems. Besides Russian warplanes Iran has manufactured its own warplanes with laser-guided missiles and whose capabilities are still unknown and could surprise any invading enemy. Iran also has its own fleet of unmanned militarized drones.

The eight-year Iraq/Iran desert war had given Iranian army the longest experience in ground and desert warfare far exceeding any other army. The Iranians learned to manufacture their own weapons such as tanks, missiles, torpedoes, helicopters, submarines and warplanes. This gave them independence and strength.

Attacking Iran will disrupt oil traffic in the Persian Gulf. In an obvious and expected move Iran will close the Straits of Hermuz blocking all military and supply in-traffic and all oil out-traffic. American military bases in the Gulf States will be targeted, and there is the possibility of also targeting oil wells. To exacerbate the ensuing oil crises Syria and Iran may also target the Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline carrying oil from the Caspian Sea to Europe through Turkey. Venezuela, an Iranian ally, would stop the flow of its oil to the US. The president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, has warned that Venezuela would not sit idle if Iran and Syria were attacked. An energy crisis might devastate Western countries. China might also enter the conflict to protect its own oil assets in Khuzestan province that the Iranian had armed heavily to protect its oil resources and to assure the supply of crude oil to its own allies.

Recognizing that Iran, unlike Afghanistan and Iraq, is a big country with a military power including strong aerial defense that is well ready for the anticipated heavy Western aerial strike, and that it has a military outreach towards the whole region that might disrupt the flow of oil, the American administration decided to postpone its attacks until it creates a “war oil reserve”, forms a large alliance of “willing countries”, and sends a military armada to the region to guarantee victory.

The American administration influence on the UN and NATO can be seen clearly by the types of resolutions the UN adopts, and by the NATO troops becoming an American proxy occupier of Afghanistan. To avoid internal political crisis the administration needs to spare the lives of the American troops as much as possible by convincing more countries that it is in their own economic interest to send their own troops to the Middle East to “keep” the oil flow to their countries. UN resolution 1701 was the best cover to send military personnel and equipment to the region. 15 thousand armed UNIFEL troops are stationed on the Lebanese southern borders to protect Israel from any Hezbollah’s attacks. An armada of NATO battleships is crowding the eastern shores of the Mediterranean allegedly to stop arm shipments to Hezbollah. The real purpose of this armada is to protect the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Oil Terminal during the war against Iran and Syrian, and to guarantee the flow of oil to Europe.

The cooperation of Gulf Arabian States was also needed. Condoleezza Rice traveled to Egypt early October and met with foreign ministers from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Rice followed the usual American tactics of dandling the resolution of the Palestinian/Israeli issue in order to gain cooperation from these Arab leaders. To put more pressure on these leaders President Bush divided them into “moderate vs extremists”. Israel had also courted these “moderate” Arab leaders during September United Nations meeting in New York, where Israeli officials held some private meetings with officials from Persian Gulf Countries (The Wall Street Journal, October 3rd). There was also a rumor about an Israeli/Saudi secret private meeting in Jordan’s King Abdullah’s palace at the end of September. The talks aimed to form some kind of secret intelligence and military alliance between Israel and the US on one side and the “moderate” Arabic regimes on the other hand against the Iranian nuclear threat and the so called “Shiite Crescent” –Iran, Syria and Lebanon- in the north. After all, these Sunni Gulf rulers had supported and financed Iraqi Saddam Hussein during his eight years war against Iran. They had sent Moslem fighters as an American proxy army to fight the Russians in Afghanistan. They had, for fifty eight years, stood silent about the Israeli terror against Palestinians, and finally had criticized Hamas and Hezbollah resistance as foolish and uncalculated useless adventures. Some of these Gulf States had joined actively into the American war games off the Iranian coastline in October 31st while others joined as observers only.

The US and NATO countries had amassed the largest military armada in the Middle East. The US armada consists of Carrier Strike Group 12 led by nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, Eisenhower Strike Group – another nuclear powered aircraft carrier with accompanied military vessels and submarines, Expeditionary Strike Group 5 with multiple attack vessels led by aircraft carrier USS Boxer, the Iowa Jima Expeditionary Strike Group, and the US Coast Guard. Canada has sent its anti-submarine HMCS Ottawa frigate to join the American Armada in the Persian Gulf. On October 1st the USS Enterprise Striking Group had crossed the Suez Canal to Join NATO armada at the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

The NATO force is composed of troops and naval vessels from several countries and is lead by Germany. It includes Garman command naval forces, Italian navy, 2 Spanish warships, 3 Danish warships, 10 Greek Warships, 2 Netherlands warships, and French, Belgium, Turkish and Bulgarian troops in South Lebanon.

This is the largest amass ever of military power in the region, and it is gathering for a reason.

The US had started its military provocation on October 30th with its “Leading Edge” war game across the Iranian shores. Iran responded with a 10 days military maneuvers “Great Prophet” taking place in Gulf, Sea of Oman, and several provinces of the country test-firing dozens of its long-range missiles capable of reaching Israel and American military bases in Gulf States.

The powder keg is ready and all it needs is a match to ignite it. This could come in the form of an “arranged” terrorist act in Lebanon – e.g. another political assassination or toppling of government- to be blamed against Syria and Iran. American warnings of such an act are already in the media.

The present American administration is an extremist theocratic apocalyptic neoconservative Christian-Zionist war mongering law-breaking power hungry administration with a bragging “war president” adopting the doctrines of “pre-emptive” strikes and perpetual war against “global terror”. This war will take place far away from the American home-land, and will generate large profits for the American military corporations. The war against Iran will engulf the whole Middle East and may overflow to its neighboring countries. Controlling Iran is a very important strategic move to assure American global hegemony. This war is scheduled to start between February and April of 2007, and it seems that there is nothing to stop it.

REMINDER from Jean: No prophecy is ever set in stone and actual events depend on freewill choices made by embodied souls. So things can and do often indeed turn out differently from what even amazing people like Nostradamus have seen in their time. Predictions must be seen as warnings about what could occur if events are left to unfold unattended and un-influenced by those who can make a huge difference, that is, you and me and all of us who care enough to help make this crucial difference...

Imagine knowing the secret Nostradamus never intended humanity to decipher.

In May 2004, members of the Italian National Library in Rome made an amazing discovery. Buried in their archives was an unknown manuscript written by the famed prophet Michel de Nostradame, or Nostradamu (1503-1566). This manuscript was handed down to his son and later donated to Pope Urban VIII. It did no surface again until now, almost four hundred years later

Due to the pressure and scrutiny of the Inquisition, Nostradamus was forced to scramble both the meaning and the order of his quatrains. He made sure humanity would not be able to use them until we had become sophisticated enough to decode them. That time has finally arrived.

Using cutting-edge data mining techniques, Rathford sifted this complex word puzzle searching for significant patterns and relationships. Almost immediately, he came up with the predictive model known as The Nostradamus Code, and the results are nothing short of startling.

When the prophecies-within-prophecies are deciphered, the hidden timeline of World War III is revealed. You find out how Osama Bin Laden, the next major terrorist attack on the US, the destruction of Rome, and a standoff between the US and Iran/North Korea all contribute to the most destructive war in human history.

From The Author

"I'm afraid the making of World War III is actually taking place in front of our eyes."

- Prince Hassan of Jordan - March 26, 2004

Drawing on newly discovered Nostradamus manuscripts, a startling new view of the world is revealed. If you agree that signs like widespread terrorism, a volatile Middle East, and China's military build-up could lead to World War III - then you will find this book truly eye-opening.

With a total of eight chapters, The Nostradamus Code: World War III opens with an overview of the bewildering events currently unfolding on the world stage. You will find out why they are happening, and what you can do about them to protect yourself.

Next, the years 2007 through 2012 are explained in precise detail. Referred to by Nostradamus as the Time of Troubles, you will read about events ranging from political deception to earth-changing battles. Use this book to enlighten yourself, your world, and your future.

Gunning for Iran - Exposed : Where The U.S. gets its "intelligence" about Iran's nuclear program
You must've heard the howls of protest from the International Atomic Energy Agency after the release of a US House of Representatives report on Iran's nuclear program. The IAEA branded the American report "outrageous and dishonest" for asserting that Tehran's nuclear plans were geared towards weapons. This, of course, was just the latest flare-up in the running debate over Iran's supposed nuclear ambitions. So where is Washington getting its information? Try an Iranian opposition group known as the Mujahedin-e-Khalq - MeK for short. Given the debacle over Saddam's non-existent WMDs in Iraq, you'd reckon there'd have to be a touch of caution where Iranian exiles peddling nuclear secrets are concerned. Iraq disaster warning
An attack on Iran will not be an invasion with ground troops. We don't have enough of those left to invade Ruritania. It will be a "package" of air and missile strikes, by U.S. forces or Israel. - The Democrats taking either or both Houses of Congress, if it happens, will not make any difference. They would rather have the Republicans start and lose another war than prevent a national disaster. Politics comes first and the country second.

Sent to me by Ragen in Chicago……

I'm incredibly angry that nothing has been said in the media about Malachi Ritcher's self-immolation beyond short articles on Friday that suggested suicide but not political protest. I hope people will create a memorial to Malachi at the site of the Millenium Flame where he died. I hope people read his statement and discuss how someone could feel so strongly about the war that he would set himself on fire in protest. And I hope people will put the responsibility for Malachi's death on the criminal regime of George Bush.

There is a link to Malachi's bio at the end of this article.

Malachi Ritscher: A Martyr For Peace

07 November 2006

Summary: A Chicago activist burns him self alive for the cause of peace.

During the Viet Nam War, Buddhist monks in Saigon set themselves on fire to protest the war. The whole world watched as these martyrs for peace went up in flames.

Last Friday, a man approached the "Millenium Flame" sculpture on the Kennedy Expressway near the Ohio Exit, and set himself aflame, leaving a note stating: "Thou Shalt Not Kill." The local media just wrote this off as another unfortunate case of mental illness.

But it wasn't mental illness. It was an anti-war protest. Malachi Ritscher was a martyr for peace. Here is his testament:

My actions should be self-explanatory, and since in our self-obsessed culture words seldom match the deed, writing a mission statement would seem questionable. So judge me by my actions. Maybe some will be scared enough to wake from their walking dream state - am I therefore a martyr or terrorist? I would prefer to be thought of as a 'spiritual warrior'. Our so-called leaders are the real terrorists in the world today, responsible for more deaths than Osama bin Laden.

I have had a wonderful life, both full and full of wonder. I have experienced love and the joy and heartache of raising a child. I have jumped out of an airplane, and escaped a burning building. I have spent the night in jail, and dropped acid during the sixties. I have been privileged to have met many supremely talented musicians and writers, most of whom were extremely generous and gracious. Even during the hard times, I felt charmed. Even the difficult lessons have been like blessed gifts. When I hear about our young men and women who are sent off to war in the name of God and Country, and who give up their lives for no rational cause at all, my heart is crushed. What has happened to my country? We have become worse than the imagined enemy - killing civilians and calling it 'collateral damage', torturing and trampling human rights inside and outside our own borders, violating our own Constitution whenever it seems convenient, lying and stealing right and left, more concerned with sports on television and ring-tones on cell-phones than the future of the world.... half the population is taking medication because they cannot face the daily stress of living in the richest nation in the world.

I too love God and Country, and feel called upon to serve. I can only hope my sacrifice is worth more than those brave lives thrown away when we attacked an Arab nation under the deception of 'Weapons of Mass Destruction'. Our interference completely destroyed that country, and destabilized the entire region. Everyone who pays taxes has blood on their hands.

I have had one previous opportunity to serve my country in a meaningful way - at 8:05 one morning in 2002 I passed Donald Rumsfeld on Delaware Avenue and I was acutely aware that slashing his throat would spare the lives of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of innocent people. I had a knife clenched in my hand, and there were no bodyguards visible; to my deep shame I hesitated, and the moment was past.

The violent turmoil initiated by the United States military invasion of Iraq will beget future centuries of slaughter, if the human race lasts that long. First we spit on the United Nations, then we expect them to clean up our mess. Our elected representatives are supposed to find diplomatic and benevolent solutions to these situations. Anyone can lash out and retaliate, that is not leadership or vision. Where is the wisdom and honor of the people we delegate our trust to?

To the rest of the world we are cowards - demanding Iraq to disarm, and after they comply, we attack with remote-control high-tech video-game weapons. And then lie about our reasons for invading. We the people bear complete responsibility for all that will follow, and it won't be pretty.

It is strange that most if not all of this destruction is instigated by people who claim to believe in God, or Allah. Many sane people turn away from religion, faced with the insanity of the 'true believers'. There is a lot of confusion: many people think that God is like Santa Claus, rewarding good little girls with presents and punishing bad little boys with lumps of coal; actually God functions more like the Easter Bunny, hiding surprises in plain sight. God does not choose the Lottery numbers, God does not make the weather, God does not endorse military actions by the self-righteous, God does not sit on a cloud listening to your prayers for prosperity. God does not smite anybody. If God watches the sparrow fall, you notice that it continues to drop, even to its death. Face the truth folks, God doesn't care, that's not what God is or does. If the human race drives itself to extinction, God will be there for another couple million years, 'watching' as a new species rises and falls to replace us. It is time to let go of primitive and magical beliefs, and enter the age of personal responsibility. Not telling others what is right for them, but making our own choices, and accepting consequences.

"Who would Jesus bomb?" This question is primarily addressing a Christian audience, but the same issues face the Muslims and the Jews: God's message is tolerance and love, not self-righteousness and hatred. Please consider "Thou shalt not kill" and "As ye sow, so shall ye reap". Not a lot of ambiguity there.

What is God? God is the force of life - the spark of creation. We each carry it within us, we share it with each other. Whether we are conscious of the life-force is a choice we make, every minute of every day. If you choose to ignore it, nothing will happen - you are just 'less conscious'. Maybe you are less happy (maybe not). Maybe you grow able to tap into the universal force, and increase the creativity in the universe. Love is anti-entropy. Please notice that 'conscious' and 'conscience' are related concepts.

Why God - what is the value? Whether committee consensus of a benevolent power that works through humans, or giant fungus under Oregon, the value of opening up to the concept of God is in coming to the realization that we are not alone, establishing a connection to the universe, the experience of finding completion. As individuals we may exist alone, but we are all alone together as a people. Faith is the answer to fear. Fear opposes love. To manipulate through fear is a betrayal of trust.

What does God want? No big mystery - simply that we try to help each other. We decide to make God-like decisions, rescuing falling sparrows, or putting the poor things out of their misery. Tolerance, giving, acceptance, forgiveness.

If this sounds a lot like pop psychology, that is my exact goal. Never underestimate the value of a pep-talk and a pat on the ass. That is basically all we give to our brave soldiers heading over to Iraq, and more than they receive when they return. I want to state these ideas in their simplest form, reducing all complexity, because each of us has to find our own answers anyway. Start from here...

I am amazed how many people think they know me, even people who I have never talked with. Many people will think that I should not be able to choose the time and manner of my own death. My position is that I only get one death, I want it to be a good one. Wouldn't it be better to stand for something or make a statement, rather than a fiery collision with some drunk driver? Are not smokers choosing death by lung cancer? Where is the dignity there? Are not the people who disregard the environment killing themselves and future generations? Here is the statement I want to make: if I am required to pay for your barbaric war, I choose not to live in your world. I refuse to finance the mass murder of innocent civilians, who did nothing to threaten our country. I will not participate in your charade - my conscience will not allow me to be a part of your crusade. There might be some who say "it's a coward's way out" - that opinion is so idiotic that it requires no response. From my point of view, I am opening a new door.

What is one more life thrown away in this sad and useless national tragedy? If one death can atone for anything, in any small way, to say to the world: I apologize for what we have done to you, I am ashamed for the mayhem and turmoil caused by my country. I was alive when John F. Kennedy instilled hope into a generation, and I was a sorry witness to the final crushing of hope by Dick Cheney's puppet, himself a pawn of the real rulers, the financial plunderers and looters who profit from every calamity; following the template of Reagan's idiocracy.

The upcoming elections are not a solution - our two party system is a failure of democracy. Our government has lost its way since our founders tried to build a structure which allowed people to practice their own beliefs, as far as it did not negatively affect others. In this regard, the separation of church and state needs to be reviewed. This is a large part of the way that the world has gone wrong, the endless defining and dividing of things, micro-sub-categorization, sectarianism. The direction we need is a process of unification, integrating all people into a world body, respecting each individual. Business and industry have more power than ever before, and individuals have less. Clearly, the function of government is to protect the individual, from hardship and disease, from zealots, from the exploitation, from monopoly, even from itself. Our leaders are not wise persons with integrity and vision - they are actors reading from teleprompters, whose highest goal is to stir up the mob. Our country slaughters Arabs, abandons New Orleaneans, and ignores the dying environment. Our economy is a house of cards, as hollow and fragile as our reputation around the world. We as a nation face the abyss of our own design.

A coalition system which includes a Green Party would be an obvious better approach than our winner-take-all system. Direct electronic debate and balloting would be an improvement over our non-representative Congress. Consider that the French people actually have a voice, because they are willing to riot when the government doesn't listen to them.

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government... "

- Abraham Lincoln

With regard to those few who crossed my path carrying the extreme and unnecessary weight of animosity: they seemed by their efforts to be punishing themselves. As they acted out the misery of their lives it is now difficult to feel anything other than pity for them.

Without fear I go now to God - your future is what you will choose today.

His biography is here:

Let's not allow this sacrifice to be written off as just another unfortunate tragedy. The tragedy is in Iraq, and Malachi Ritscher died to tell us all that. Malachi Ritscher is entitled to at least as much respect as those Buddhist monks in Viet Nam.

Sandinista! How Will Bush Make Nicaragua Pay for its Disobedience?

Written by Chris Floyd

07 November 2006

Ortega back in power, early poll results show

From the Guardian: The Sandinista leader and former Marxist revolutionary Daniel Ortega appeared to have mounted a spectacular political comeback last night after preliminary results showed he had won Nicaragua's presidential election in the first round. Mr Ortega led by a margin which seemed wide enough to avoid a run-off and to deliver a stinging rebuke to Washington, which had openly campaigned against him...Roberto Rivas, the head of Nicaragua's top electoral body, said the vote was clean and transparent. An army of 17,000 observers, including the former US president Jimmy Carter and EU officials, was expected largely to endorse that view.

Ortega ran and won with the backing of several prominent ex-Contras, including Jamie Morales, his own running mate. Morales had been the Contras' spokesman in Washington during the Reagan years when, with the direct involvement of VP George Bush, the Administration joined hands with the mullahs of Iran and the druglords of Central and South America to fund, arm and train a terrorist army to overthrow the Sandinista government. Although this exercise in mass state terrorism failed on the battlefield, the Reagan-Bush policy of economic terror managed to reduce Nicaragua to dire poverty, with the open threat that the stranglehold would go on until the Sandinistas were gone.

Of course, the stated reason for the Reagan-Bush hatred of Ortega was that he was an evil Commie tyrant and dictator who opposed democracy. However, oddly enough, when a majority of Nicaraguans bowed to the American blackmail in 1990 and voted against Sandinistas, these evil, anti-democratic Commie tyrant dictators....left office. They obeyed the obviously coerced but democratically expressed will of the people. And now, Ortega -- no shining knight but, in the end, a rather typical politician eager for power but with at least an inclination toward mitigating some of the most pernicious effects of predatory crony capitalism -- has been returned, democratically, to power...without "robocalls," without "push-polls," without strangely malfunctioning voting machines that only make "mistakes" in favor of one party, with "voter roll purges," etc. etc.

What will happen now? It's obvious: the Bush II administration -- which is clotted with many of the same Constitution-hating state terrorists who threw in with druglords and Islamic extremists during the Contra War -- has already announced its intention to resume the old economic terrorism against the wretchedly poor people of Nicaragua. American officials stated plainly that trade restrictions and cutbacks, if not cut-offs, in U.S. aid were in the cards if the Nicaraguans exercised their democratic rights in favor of the Sandinistas. They even sent Oliver North down to tour the country before the election -- the clearest possible signal for the rabble to get in line, rather like having Frank Nitti drive through the neighborhood to remind the shopkeepers to pay up their protection money to Al Capone.

The only question remaining is whether the Iran-Contra criminal gang now restored to the White House will be content with economic sabatoge of the Nicaraguan government. After all, this time Ortega will have the backing of Venezeula's Hugo Chavez, who has promised cheap oil and other economic benefits to the Sandinistas. The Washington squeeze play won't be quite as effective this time around. So will they move on to more physical methods of destabilization? Will they sponsor another mass-murdering civil war? Or will it be confined to covert ops? After all, the great googily-moogily of American intelligence, John Negroponte, made his bones in the region during the Reagan-Bush reign of terror, operating out of Honduras as the United States spread war and repression across Central America.*

Today's election in the United States won't make any difference to whatever Nitti-like plans the Bush Administration has in store for the disobedient Nicaraguans. Even if the Democrats take Congress, Negroponte, Bush, Cheney, Elliot Abrams (the convicted Iran-Contra liar) and the others will still be in power. The only thing a Democratic win might affect is how overtly or covertly the gang decides to take its revenge. But there's no doubt that one way or another, the Nicaraguan people are about to learn that in the Bush Imperium, democracy is never free; if you vote the "wrong" way, you've got to pay the price.

U.S. will train Latin American militaries - Ban lifted to offset trend toward left
WASHINGTON - Concern about leftist victories in Latin America has prompted President Bush to quietly grant a waiver that allows the United States to resume training militaries from 11 Latin American and Caribbean countries. The administration hopes the training will forge links with countries in the region and blunt a leftward trend. Daniel Ortega, an adversary of the United States in the region during the 1980s, was elected president in Nicaragua this week. Bolivians chose another leftist, Evo Morales, last year. A military training ban was originally designed to pressure countries into exempting U.S. soldiers from war crimes trials. The 2002 U.S. law bars countries from receiving military aid and training if they refuse to promise immunity from prosecution to U.S. service members who might get hauled before the International Criminal Court. The law allows presidential waivers. The White House lifted the ban on 21 countries, about half in Latin America or the Caribbean, through a presidential memorandum Oct. 2 to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The training is conducted in the USA. A ban on giving countries weapons remains. Commercial arms sales are not affected, said Jose Ruiz, a U.S. Southern Command spokesman. The training ban had resulted in a loss of U.S. influence in the region. The issue gained urgency after a string of leftist candidates came to power in Latin America. On a trip to the region this year, Rice said that the impact of the ban had been "the same as shooting ourselves in the foot." China stepped into the gap. Ruiz said China "has approached every country in our area of responsibility" and has exchanged senior military officials with Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile and Cuba and provided military aid and training to Jamaica and Venezuela. The ban remains in effect for some countries. Venezuela, whose fiery President Hugo Chávez is a critic of the Bush administration, remains ineligible because it is on a State Department list of countries alleged to have permitted the trafficking of women and children for sexual exploitation and forced labor. Chávez is up for re-election in December and leads in the polls. Cuba is also off-limits because of a long-standing U.S. embargo against Fidel Castro's regime. Ruiz said efforts are being made to transfer money this year to begin training foreign officers from eligible countries.

Reagan & Guatemala’s Death Files

By Robert Parry

Ronald Reagan's election in November 1980 set off celebrations in the well-to-do communities of Central America.

After four years of Jimmy Carter's human rights nagging, the region's anticommunist hard-liners were thrilled that they had someone in the White House who understood their problems.

The oligarchs and the generals had good reason for the optimism. For years, Reagan had been a staunch defender of right-wing regimes that engaged in bloody counterinsurgency campaigns against leftist enemies.

In the late 1970s, when Carter's human rights coordinator, Pat Derian, criticized the Argentine military for its "dirty war" -- tens of thousands of "disappearances," tortures and murders -- then-political commentator Reagan joshed that she should "walk a mile in the moccasins” of the Argentine generals before criticizing them. [For details, see Martin Edwin Andersen's Dossier Secreto.]

Despite his aw shucks style, Reagan found virtually every anticommunist action justified, no matter how brutal. From his eight years in the White House, there is no historical indication that he was troubled by the bloodbath and even genocide that occurred in Central America during his presidency, while he was shipping hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to the implicated forces.

The death toll was staggering -- an estimated 70,000 or more political killings in El Salvador, possibly 20,000 slain from the contra war in Nicaragua, about 200 political "disappearances" in Honduras and some 100,000 people eliminated during a resurgence of political violence in Guatemala.

The one consistent element in these slaughters was the overarching Cold War rationalization, emanating in large part from Ronald Reagan's White House.

Yet, as the world community moves to punish war crimes in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, no substantive discussion has occurred in the United States about facing up to this horrendous record of the 1980s.

Rather than a debate about Reagan as a potential war criminal, the ailing ex-president is honored as a conservative icon with his name attached to Washington National Airport and with an active legislative push to have his face carved into Mount Rushmore.

When the national news media does briefly acknowledge the barbarities of the 1980s in Central America, it is in the context of one-day stories about the little countries bravely facing up to their violent pasts.

At times, the CIA is fingered abstractly as a bad supporting actor in the violent dramas. But never does the national press lay blame on individual American officials.

The grisly reality of Central America was most recently revisited on Feb. 25 when a Guatemalan truth commission issued a report on the staggering human rights crimes that occurred during a 34-year civil war.

The Historical Clarification Commission, an independent human rights body, estimated that the conflict claimed the lives of some 200,000 people with the most savage bloodletting occurring in the 1980s.

Based on a review of about 20 percent of the dead, the panel blamed the army for 93 percent of the killings and leftist guerrillas for three percent. Four percent were listed as unresolved.

The report documented that in the 1980s, the army committed 626 massacres against Mayan villages. "The massacres that eliminated entire Mayan villages … are neither perfidious allegations nor figments of the imagination, but an authentic chapter in Guatemala's history," the commission concluded.

The army "completely exterminated Mayan communities, destroyed their livestock and crops," the report said. In the north, the report termed the slaughter a "genocide." [WP, Feb. 26, 1999]

Besides carrying out murder and “disappearances,” the army routinely engaged in torture and rape. "The rape of women, during torture or before being murdered, was a common practice" by the military and paramilitary forces, the report found.

The report added that the "government of the United States, through various agencies including the CIA, provided direct and indirect support for some [of these] state operations." The report concluded that the U.S. government also gave money and training to a Guatemalan military that committed "acts of genocide" against the Mayans.

"Believing that the ends justified everything, the military and the state security forces blindly pursued the anticommunist struggle, without respect for any legal principles or the most elemental ethical and religious values, and in this way, completely lost any semblance of human morals," said the commission chairman, Christian Tomuschat, a German jurist.

"Within the framework of the counterinsurgency operations carried out between 1981 and 1983, in certain regions of the country agents of the Guatemalan state committed acts of genocide against groups of the Mayan people,” he added. [NYT, Feb. 26, 1999]

The report did not single out culpable individuals either in Guatemala or the United States. But the American official most directly responsible for renewing U.S. military aid to Guatemala and encouraging its government during the 1980s was President Reagan.

THE SECRET WARS OF THE CIA: by John Stockwell - A lecture given in October, 1987 - Part II
(...) Systematically, the contras have been assassinating religious workers, teachers, health workers, elected officials, government administrators. You remember the assassination manual that surfaced in 1984. It caused such a stir that President Reagan had to address it himself in the presidential debates with Walter Mondale. They use terror. This is a technique that they're using to traumatize the society so that it can't function. I don't mean to abuse you with verbal violence, but you have to understand what your government and its agents are doing. They go into villages, they haul out families. With the children forced to watch they castrate the father, they peel the skin off his face, they put a grenade in his mouth and pull the pin. With the children forced to watch they gang-rape the mother, and slash her breasts off. And sometimes for variety, they make the parents watch while they do these things to the children. This is nobody's propaganda. There have been over 100,000 American witnesses for peace who have gone down there and they have filmed and photographed and witnessed these atrocities immediately after they've happened, and documented 13,000 people killed this way, mostly women and children. Clashes in Gaza leave dozens dead

By Dion Nissenbaum

BEIT HANOUN, Gaza Strip - The bodies arrived one after another on the shoulders of a seemingly endless river of mourners. One was a small boy weighing no more than 60 pounds, tightly encased in a green Hamas flag. Another was only pieces, placed in a box and hustled down the street on a stretcher.

Spatters of blood stained the white shroud of a third lying on the floor of an unfinished mosque.

"It is a massacre," Mohammad Hamad, 26, a doctor from the town hospital, said as mourners carried another body into the mosque. "This is the worst thing that has happened to Beit Hanoun."

Palestinians in this small farming town emerged from their homes Tuesday to bury their friends and relatives after the deadliest week in the Gaza Strip since Israel pulled its military out of the area 13 months ago.

Palestinian medical officials said that at least 20 Palestinian civilians were among the 62 people killed during the six-day military operation, which Israel staged to combat the persistent threat of rudimentary rockets fired by Palestinian militants into southern Israel. About 40 of the dead were militants. One Israeli soldier died.

Because it's one of the closest towns to the Israeli border, Beit Hanoun is a major militant launching pad. More than a third of the 800 Qassam rockets fired into Israel over the past year were shot from the town, according to the Israeli military.

The Israeli army, in announcing its departure from Beit Hanoun, said the campaign had met its goals by destroying rocket launchers, hitting dozens of militants and capturing caches of weapons.

But even as the tanks pulled back, Palestinians fired five rockets into Israel. They caused little damage, but made it clear that the latest operation hadn't neutralized the danger.

"I don't know what message Israel is trying to give, but certainly such incursions will not help in bringing quiet," said Khaled Abdel Shafi, the head of the United Nations Development Program's Gaza operation, as he stood outside the mosque. "It will deepen the hate."

The Israeli military conceded that civilians were caught up in the battles, but accused Palestinian militants of using residents as human shields.

"In a situation where militants operate from within population centers and schools and mosques, then sometimes the outcome is not a very positive one for civilians," said Maj. Avital Leibovich, an Israeli military spokeswoman. "This is the price civilians pay for the militants' activity."

Israel has been trying for months to prevent Palestinian militants from firing rockets into the country. The attacks haven't been very accurate; the last time a Palestinian rocket killed an Israeli was 15 months ago. They're a constant reminder, however, that Israel's decision to shutter its Gaza settlements last summer hasn't led to a new era of calm.

The latest operation, which began last Wednesday, ravaged parts of Beit Hanoun. Muddy tank treads cut wide paths through orchards and roads. The stench of sewage from broken pipes drifted through neighborhoods. Families sifted through the rubble of their demolished homes.

In one of the more contentious steps, Israel opened fire last Friday as dozens of unarmed women streamed toward one of the town's mosques to try to help cornered militants escape. Two women were killed and the mosque was destroyed. The militants were able to flee.

Near the ruins of the mosque, members of the Nasil family baked flat bread Tuesday on a small wood-fed stove in the ruins of their living room, now fully exposed to the street.

As fighting had raged just up the street, the family members had sought shelter in a nearby clinic. When they returned, the front of the house was gone. "It was hell," Fadil Nasil said.

Brothers Yassir and Hikmat Hamad stood in the ruins of their tangerine and olive orchards. Israeli tanks and bulldozers arrived last Wednesday, they said, and plowed under their 2 { acres. Soldiers ordered them to stay inside, while Israeli snipers took control of rooftops nearby.

When members of the Hamad family emerged Tuesday morning, they discovered that all 100 of their ducks and 50 rabbits had been plowed under along with their trees.

This was the second time that an Israeli incursion had leveled the Hamad brothers' fields. The first time came several years ago, when the Israeli military still held bases in Gaza. Afterward, the family replanted its fruit trees and tried to rebuild.

The brothers said they'd tried to steer clear of politics and had even pulled out their guns three months ago to chase away militants who were trying to launch rockets from their orchards.

"We don't want rockets. We don't want militants," said Yassir, who's 48. "We just want peace."

But now, with their farm destroyed, the brothers said they weren't likely to try to stop the militants again.

"After this, there's nothing left," said Hikmat, 49.

His brother added: "If they want to launch, let them launch. I don't care anymore."

Israeli tank shells 'kill 18 Palestinians in sleep' (08 November 2006)
Israeli tank shells killed at least 18 people in their sleep when they landed in Gaza early today, witnesses report. Eight children were said to be among the dead.Khaled Radi, a health ministry official, said of the 18 dead, 13 were from the same family. He said at least 40 more were wounded, all civilians after the attack on a residential neighbourhood north of Beit Hanoun. Palestinian hospital officials said there were several more injured. According to witnesses, all those killed were women and children. Four hospitals are treating the wounded across Gaza. Palestinian security officials said that five tank shells landed in the area within 15 minutes. Most the casualties were caused to a row of homes belonging to members of one family. (...) Thousands gathered outside hospitals weeping as the bodies arrived. Witnesses said that many of the dead arrived in their sleeping clothes. Schoolchildren swept out to the street to protest the attack as mosques broadcast angry speeches on the street. Dozens of schoolchildren were trying to storm an empty EU mission building in Gaza City, according to witnesses, throwing stones and bottles. Palestinian security is trying to prevent them from entering the building. Rahwi Hamad, 75, said he was awoken by the sound of explosions at about 5:15 a.m. and emerged from his home to find body parts and pools of blood in the streets. "I saw people coming out of the house, bleeding and screaming. I carried a girl covered with blood," he said. "Inside the houses, we evacuated dismembered bodies. We saw legs, hands, parts of heads stuck to the wall. Everything was disgusting. this is the worst, bloody scene I have ever scene." The shelling came after Israeli attacks in Gaza and the West Bank killed at least 15 people following a pullout from the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun at the end of a bloody weeklong sweep.

A brutal taste of the future - By Sami Abdel-Shafi in Gaza City
The assault on Beit Hanoun is a terrifying example of what lies in store for Palestinians - The initiation of Avigdor Lieberman - widely regarded as an outright racist - into Ehud Olmert's Israeli government seems to have already brought a taste of things to come. For the past week, the Gaza Strip city of Beit Hanoun has been made a ground zero by the Israeli army. By yesterday, more than 260 Palestinians lay dead and injured, with 53 fatalities - women, children and ambulance drivers among them.

In One Word: MASSACRE! by Uri Avnery (11/11/06)
(...) DID THE shells hit the homes of people intentionally? There are only two possible answers to that. The extreme version says: Yes. The sequence of events points in that direction. The Israeli army, one of the most modern in the world, has no answer to the Qassam, one of the most primitive of weapons. This short-range unguided rocket (named after Izz-ad-Din al-Qassam, the first Palestinian fighter, who was killed in 1935 in a battle against the British authorities of Palestine) is little more than a pipe filled with home-made explosives. In a futile attempt to prevent the launching of Qassams, the Israeli forces invade the towns and villages of the Gaza Strip at regular intervals and institute a reign of terror. A week ago, they invaded Beit-Hanoun and killed more than 50 people, many of them women and children. The moment they left, the Palestinians started to launch as many Qassams as possible against Ashkelon, in order to prove that these incursions do not deter them. That increased the frustration of the generals even more. Ashkelon is not a remote poverty-stricken little town like Sderot, most of whose inhabitants are of Moroccan origin. In Ashkelon there lives also an elitist population of European descent. The army chiefs, having lost their honor in Lebanon, were eager - according to this version - to teach the Palestinians a lesson, once and for all. According to the Israeli saying: If force doesn't work, use more force. (...) The guiltiest one is the Great Apologizer: Ehud Olmert, the Prime Minister. Olmert boasted recently that because of the clever behavior of his government "we were able to kill hundreds of terrorists, and the world has not reacted." According to Olmert, a "terrorist" is any armed Palestinian, including the tens of thousands of Palestinian policemen who carry arms by agreement with Israel. They may now be shot freely. "Terrorists" are also the women and children, who are killed in the street and in their homes. (Some say so openly: the children grow up to be terrorists, the women give birth to children who grow up to be terrorists.) Olmert can go on with this, as he says, because the world keeps silent. Today the US even vetoed a very mild Security Council resolution against the event. Does this mean that the governments throughout the world - America, Europe, the Arab world - are accessories to the crime at Beit Hanoun? That can best be answered by the citizens of those countries. After yesterday's "end of the Beit Hanoun operation" - we now know it was not the end. The army withdrew only its troops from the town itself, to place them around it, immediately starting a nightly artillery bombardment which erased a whole family. As it now stands 19 people among them old and young, men, women and children were killed in their beds. Withdrawing to attack more strongly - it's like a metaphor for the Disengagement of the Gaza Strip. (...) We reject with disgust the lame apologies offered by government speakers. Even if there had been no explicit intention to perpetrate a massacre and kill civilians and children sleeping quietly in their beds, this massacre was the inevitable result of the army’s uncontrolled rampage in the Gaza Strip, fully authorized by the government. In supposed “retaliation” for the shooting of missiles which killed nobody in Israel during the entire past year, the army killed nearly a hundred Palestinians in just the past week. We call upon the government to end the carnage and enter immediate talks with the elected Palestinian government in order to achieve a complete cease- fire and prisoner release, on the way to full negotiations for peace and an end to the occupation. We further call upon all who care for peace and human decency everywhere – including, and especially, those who consider themselves friends of Israel – to raise their voice in protest at the war madness which seized those who hold power in Israel, and to hold protest vigils outside all Israeli embassies and consulates. Chemical pollution 'harms children's brains'

By Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor

08 November 2006

Chemical pollution may have harmed the brains of millions of children around the world in what scientists are calling a "silent pandemic".

The world is bathed in a soup of industrial chemicals which are damaging the intellectual potential of the next generation and may increase the incidence of conditions such as Parkinson's disease, they say.

One in every six children has a developmental disability, such as autism, attention deficit disorder or cerebral palsy, the effects of which may be life-long.

The role of low-level pollutants, such as lead and mercury, on the growing brain has been recognised for decades and measures taken to reduce exposure to a minimum. But scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston, say at least 202 chemicals are known to have the capacity to damage the brain and their effects at low levels of exposure are unknown. They say limits for exposure to chemicals should be set for pregnant women and young children, recognising the unique sensitivity of the developing brain, which is much more susceptible to the toxic effects of chemicals.

Philippe Grandjean, visiting professor at Harvard and lead author of the review, published in the online Lancet, said: "The human brain is a precious and vulnerable organ. Even limited damage may have serious consequences. It probably is going to be difficult [to set exposure limits] but this is a classical case where there really is a lot at stake. We are talking about the brain development of future generations. There will be an enormous cost of not regulating exposure."

Critics accused the scientists of scaremongering and said their claim of a silent pandemic was a "gross overstatement".

The 202 chemicals listed by the authors have been shown to cause serious accidents when ingested, or have been used in suicide attempts. They include chemicals used in household products, such as aluminium in saucepans and soft-drink cans, and acetone in nail-polish remover. The main exposure to the pollutants is through contamination of the environment during manufacture, when the chemicals seep into ground water, are carried in air or contaminate food.

Commenting on the review, Professor Nigel Brown, dean of medicine at St George's School of Medicine, University of London, said: "This is a campaigning article. In their enthusiasm, the authors verge on scaremongering.

"[Their claim] of a silent pandemic is a gross overstatement. It is possible that there is a problem, we should be aware of this and we should study it but there is currently not a shred of evidence of a pandemic."

What chemical pollution can do

Used in adhesives, printing ink and agricultural sprays. Can cause drowsiness and hallucinations.

Used to make nylon, paint and resin removers, and fungicides. Can cause headaches and convulsions.

Used in nail-polish remover and to make plastics, fibres and drugs. Breathing it over long periods can cause light-headedness and confusion.

Used as a petrol additive and in spray paints. Can cause an effect similar to drunkenness followed by severe stomach, leg and back pain.

Used in dry cleaning. Breathing it for long periods may cause dizziness, poor co-ordination and difficulty concentrating.

Used to make pesticides, dyes and rubber. Breathing in small amounts over several years may cause cancer.

Used in making plastics. Breathing small amounts over long periods causes alterations in vision, hearing loss and slower reaction times.

Industrial chemicals linked to ADHD, autism (Nov 7)
According to a new report toxic chemicals may be causing a pandemic of brain disorders because of inadequate regulation. Researchers from Denmark and the U.S. say that there are over 200 industrial chemicals, including metals, solvents and pesticides, which have the potential to damage the brain.Scientists believe fetal and early childhood exposures to industrial chemicals in the environment can damage the developing brain and can lead to neurodevelopmental disorders such autism, attention deficit disorder (ADHD), and mental retardation. Studies have already shown, say the team, that low-level exposure of some can lead to neurobehavioral defects in children.Although experts remain divided over the findings, nevertheless one in six children worldwide has a development disability such as autism and cerebral palsy, which raises the possibility that the authors may have an argument. Chemicals Within Us (OCTOBER 2006 issue of the National Geographic magazine)
Modern chemistry keeps insects from ravaging crops, lifts stains from carpets, and saves lives. But the ubiquity of chemicals is taking a toll. Many of the compounds absorbed by the body stay there for years—and fears about their health effects are growing. My journalist-as-guinea-pig experiment is taking a disturbing turn. A Swedish chemist is on the phone, talking about flame retardants, chemicals added for safety to just about any product that can burn. Found in mattresses, carpets, the plastic casing of televisions, electronic circuit boards, and automobiles, flame retardants save hundreds of lives a year in the United States alone. These, however, are where they should not be: inside my body. Åke Bergman of Stockholm University tells me he has received the results of a chemical analysis of my blood, which measured levels of flame-retarding compounds called polybrominated diphenyl ethers. In mice and rats, high doses of PBDEs interfere with thyroid function, cause reproductive and neurological problems, and hamper neurological development. Little is known about their impact on human health. "I hope you are not nervous, but this concentration is very high," Bergman says with a light Swedish accent. My blood level of one particularly toxic PBDE, found primarily in U.S.-made products, is 10 times the average found in a small study of U.S. residents and more than 200 times the average in Sweden. The news about another PBDE variant—also toxic to animals—is nearly as bad. My levels would be high even if I were a worker in a factory making the stuff, Bergman says. In fact I'm a writer engaged in a journey of chemical self-discovery. Last fall I had myself tested for 320 chemicals I might have picked up from food, drink, the air I breathe, and the products that touch my skin—my own secret stash of compounds acquired by merely living. It includes older chemicals that I might have been exposed to decades ago, such as DDT and PCBs; pollutants like lead, mercury, and dioxins; newer pesticides and plastic ingredients; and the near-miraculous compounds that lurk just beneath the surface of modern life, making shampoos fragrant, pans nonstick, and fabrics water-resistant and fire-safe. (...) Each year the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reviews an average of 1,700 new compounds that industry is seeking to introduce. Yet the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act requires that they be tested for any ill effects before approval only if evidence of potential harm exists—which is seldom the case for new chemicals. The agency approves about 90 percent of the new compounds without restrictions. Only a quarter of the 82,000 chemicals in use in the U.S. have ever been tested for toxicity. Studies by the Environmental Working Group, an environmental advocacy organization that helped pioneer the concept of a "body burden" of toxic chemicals, had found hundreds of chemical traces in the bodies of volunteers. But until recently, no one had even measured average levels of exposure among large numbers of Americans. No regulations required it, the tests are expensive, and technology sensitive enough to measure the tiniest levels didn't exist. Last year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) took a step toward closing that gap when it released data on 148 substances, from DDT and other pesticides to metals, PCBs, and plastic ingredients, measured in the blood and urine of several thousand people. The study said little about health impacts on the people tested or how they might have encountered the chemicals. CLIP

'Axis of Oil' more important to Prime Minister than health of planet

Oct. 22, 2006

Exxon, the world's richest and mightiest corporation, was the leading force behind a massive 10-year campaign to block the Kyoto accord and ensure the world remains hooked on oil.

This was no easy battle, even for Exxon. Lined up against it was the scientific world — and most of the world community.

In the end, not even Exxon was able to block the signing of the historic Kyoto Protocol, as the world came together in 1997 in a far-reaching bid to shake its planet-endangering oil addiction.

But Exxon did score one huge victory when the new administration of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, close Exxon allies, withdrew U.S. support for Kyoto. The withdrawal of the U.S., which emits roughly one-quarter of the world's greenhouse gases, was a devastating blow. Still, the world community pressed on with Kyoto.

Into this titanic, ongoing struggle between the world community and the Bush-Cheney-Exxon axis of oil, Canada has now definitively entered on the side of the oil interests.

With the release last week of the Harper government's "clean air" bill, Ottawa has signalled its abandonment of Kyoto.

The previous Liberal government certainly shares some of the blame.

While it signed onto Kyoto and renewed that commitment last year, it failed to take meaningful steps to reach Kyoto targets, recklessly allowing Canada's greenhouse gas emissions to continue to rise.

But Harper's "green" plan is the final nail in the coffin for Canada's Kyoto commitment. The plan doesn't even mention Kyoto, instead calls for yet more consultations with industry and sets actual reduction targets an incredible 44 years into the future. By then, presumably even industry will be sick of consulting.

It won't matter much though, since the earth will almost certainly have warmed to the point where the damage will be irreversible.

Even the much more demanding deadlines set out in the Kyoto Protocol are a long shot at reversing the horrendously destructive course we're on, before it's too late. It now seems Canada will be the only nation failing to meet targets it agreed to in signing Kyoto.

This lackadaisical approach to the world's most urgent problem is utterly consistent with Harper's long-time indifference to the global warming crisis.

Like others close to the oil industry, Harper has tried to discredit the scientific conclusion that human actions are causing global warming — a conclusion which virtually every climate scientist in the world considers about as open-and-shut as the case that smoking causes cancer.

Harper knows the Canadian public, particularly in Quebec, wants action, but that means clamping down on Canada's fastest growing source of greenhouse gases: Alberta's booming oil sands.

And Harper has absolutely no intention of getting tough on the oil industry.

Harper has now clearly shown which side he's on.

But he's hoping we'll be so dazzled by his talk of a "green" plan for "clean air" that we won't notice the Bush-Cheney-Exxon axis lurking in the background.

Linda McQuaig is a Toronto-based author and commentator.

NOTE FROM JEAN: Stephen Harper's Day of Reckoning should be coming fairly soon as there is massive opposition across Canada, and especially in Quebec, to his backing down from Kyoto and his pro-oil agenda. His Conservative party will be booted out of power and relegated to the fringe of political extremism when his minority government is forced into new elections, most likely next Spring. Let's hope now that whomever gets elected then won't forget this lesson and will massively greens Canadian policies across the board as is the case in Quebec. Staying green with dirtiest oil no easy task (Nov 8)
PRIME MINISTER Stephen Harper has painted himself into a tight corner when it comes to dealing with the most urgent environmental issue facing the world today. It is essential that Canada, one of the highest per capita emitters of greenhouse gases in the world, take major steps to reduce its emissions in order to do its share in preventing dangerous increases in the world’s temperature. But at the same time, Harper appears to be counting on the oil industry, and especially Alberta’s oil sands, to drive Canada’s future growth. However, these oil sands are one of the world’s worst sources of greenhouse gases. To develop these reserves aggressively, without truly major changes in technology, could make Canada the world’s No. 1 emitter of greenhouse gases on a per capita basis. In fact, the highly knowledgeable Albertans whom I have talked to, people deeply involved in energy planning in Alberta, contend that the optimistic projections for oil sands production, from about one million barrels a day today, to three to four million barrels a day by 2015, are not achievable using today’s technology without wreaking significant environmental damage. (...) Yet as the report on climate change recently produced by Sir Nicholas Stern warns, climate change poses critical threats to the world economy, and urgent action is needed now. The proposed Clean Air Act, introduced by Environment Minister Rona Ambrose, gives the impression of tough action but there is no sense of urgency or immediate action. As the Stern report warns, "there is a high price to delay." Weak action in the next 10 to 20 years would put stabilization, even at a targeted 550 parts per million level in the atmosphere, beyond reach — "and this level is already associated with significant risks.""Stabilizing at 550 ppm would require global emissions to peak in the next 10 to 20 years. . . . By 2050, global emissions would need to be about 25 per cent below current levels . . . in the context of a world economy that in 2050 may be three to four times larger than today. "This doesn’t rule out the future use of oil or coal. But as Mark Jaccard, author of the Canadian prize-winning book Sustainable Fossil Fuels, argues, the threats to the environment are so great from current practices that oil and coal use can only be considered for future use if they generate zero emissions. If we can’t do that, there’s no great future for the oil sands in a sustainable world. Our goal should be to become a "clean-energy superpower," not a dirty-energy superpower.

Ambrose's AWOL approach (November 08, 2006)
OTTAWA - It was a cheap shot to the head, but groups attacking Environment Minister Rona Ambrose for spending more time on her hair than their conferences have a legitimate quibble with her attendance record. With its Kyoto greenhouse-gas reduction commitment in tatters, Canada's New Government is the one wearing black at international gatherings where global warming is the hot topic. And so it seems they have embraced a new philosophy -- when the going gets tough, the Conservatives aren't going. Prime Minister Stephen Harper bowed out of next week's summit of European leaders with climate change on the agenda, allegedly to spend more time in a Commons he asserts is a House of paralyzed dysfunctionality. That feeble excuse failed to pass the smell test after opposition parties offered to remove one of their own MPs from voting while he was away. But it's Rona Ambrose who has gone noticeably missing whenever duty called on her to serve as chair of the Conference of Parties, the governing body of United Nations climate change negotiations. At her ministerial debut in Bonn, Germany, to chair a two-week meeting, Ambrose stayed for just one day before she fled the bad-mouthing of Canada for abandoning its Kyoto Protocol commitments. Apparently gun-shy from that experience, she monitored a follow-up September meeting in Switzerland electronically from Ottawa. She was a no-show at a G8-plus-five meeting in Mexico although, to be fair, not all ministers attend this gabfest. But now comes the biggie -- the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Nairobi. Expected there to hand over the chairpersonship to the next host country, Ambrose sent her farewell speech electronically to unimpressed observers, her arrival delayed until next week. If Canada's role was reduced to serving as an anti-Kyoto punching bag at these green gatherings, you may well argue it's pointless to attend. But we had the responsibility of chairing the process."And it's certainly not the leadership you'd expect from somebody who has the responsibility to lead the United Nations climate negotiations," argues Mathew Bramley of the Pembina Institute, correctly in my view. Climate warning is a bit too stern (Nov 5, 2006),,16849-2437519,00.html
A FIERCE DEBATE has been raging, mainly on the internet, and for once it isn’t about Princess Diana, September 11 or UFOs. The debate is about oil, and whether the world is about to run out of it. Peak-oil theory postulates that the globe is at or close to its production peak and that it will be downhill from here. Peak oil’s great guru is the late M King Hubbert (like John Wayne, his first name was Marion; like Wayne he chose not to emphasise it). He was the American geophysicist who predicted in 1956 that American oil production would peak about 1970 (it did) and that a global peak would be reached a quarter of a century or so later. (...) More importantly, the question of whether oil is running out is central to climate change. If fossil fuels are the main cause of rising greenhouse-gas emissions, and one of them is on its way out, perhaps we should not be so worried. That was one reason why last week’s Treasury-commissioned report on the economics of climate change, from Sir Nicholas Stern and his team, was interesting. It is a tome, just under 600 pages.Far from running out of oil, it said, we are still awash with it. Taking all fossil fuels together — oil, gas and coal — the world has so far used 2,700 billion barrels of oil equivalent. The amount of oil, gas and coal left in the ground is at least 40,000 billion barrels, with at least seven billion barrels of that economically recoverable. On unchanged polices, demand for energy will be some 4,700 billion barrels over the next half-century. Oil demand will be 1,800 billion barrels, and that amount, according to the report, is economically recoverable as long as oil remains above $30 a barrel. “There is enough fossil fuel in the ground to meet world consumption demand at reasonable cost until at least 2050,” the report said. Can this be true? While I don’t think we are at an oil peak now, there is something close to an industry consensus that we could reach that point in 20 years. The International Energy Agency has warned that huge investments will be needed in exploration, production and refining capacity to meet demand after 2010. CLIP

Subject: Two Choices

What would you do? make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?"

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. "I believe  that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child."

Then he told the following story:

Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they'll let me play?"  Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play , it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning."

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball ... the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay"

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third! Shay, run to third!"

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, "Shay, run home! Run home!" Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

"That day", said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, "the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world".

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THIS STORY: We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate. The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.

If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the "appropriate" ones to receive this type of message. Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference. We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the "natural order of things." So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.

You now have two choices:
1. Delete
2. Forward

May your day, be a Shay Day.

If you can live without caffeine,

If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining,

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,

If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, though no fault of yours, something goes wrong,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him / her,

If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,

If you can face the world without lies and deceit,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

If you can honestly say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color, religion, gender preference, or politics,

THEN, you have ALMOST reached the same level of development as your dog.
