"A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter
the course of history."

- Mahatma Gandhi

"They have always taught and trained you to believe it to be your patriotic duty to go to war and to have yourselves slaughtered at their command. But in all the history of the world you, the people, have never had a voice in declaring war, and strange as it certainly appears, no war by any nation in any age has ever been declared by the people"

- Eugene Debs

"There will always be times when you feel discouraged. I too have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it; I will not entertain it. It is not allowed to eat from my plate. The reason is this: In my uttermost bones I know something, as do you. It is that there can be no despair when you remember why you came to Earth, who you serve, and who sent you here. The good words we say and the good deeds we do are not ours: They are the words and deeds of the One who brought us here. In that spirit, I hope you will write this on your wall: When a great ship is in harbor and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for. "

Hackers Have Found It: Our Worst Fears - Diebold Was Engineering Rigged Elections

Submitted by Bev Harris on Sat, 08/28/2004 - 18:52. Investigations. By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes is created in the Diebold central tabulator, a program installed in 1,000 locations, which controls both paper ballots and touch-screens, each system handling up to a million votes at a time. After invoking the 2-digit trigger, this second set of votes can be changed so that it no longer matches the correct set of votes. The voting system will then read the totals from the bogus vote set.It takes only seconds to change the votes, and to date not a single location in the U.S. has implemented security measures to fully mitigate the risks. It is not too late to do so, and the corrective measures are relatively simple. This program is not "stupidity" or sloppiness. It was designed and tested over a series of a dozen version adjustments, and has been in place for four years. Full story at http://www.blackboxvoting.org/?q=node/view/78

The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. CLIP

OVER A MILLION BARRELS OF OIL A DAY LOST TO DEPLETION (24 August 2004)
http://www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ww3/082304_million_depletion.shtml
The world is now losing more than a million barrels of oil a day to depletion - twice the rate of two years ago - according to a new analysis published this month in Petroleum Review, the oil and gas magazine of the Energy Institute in London. The analysis shows that output from 18 significant oil-producing countries, accounting for almost 29 percent of total world production, declined by 1.14 million barrels a day (mb/d) in 2003. The annual rate of decline also appears to be accelerating, contrary to the widely held view that depletion progresses slowly. Based on data in the latest BP Statistical Review of World Energy, production from this group of 18 countries peaked in 1997 at 24.7 mb/d and by 2003 it had fallen to 22.1 mb/d. In 1998 their total production dropped by less than one percent, whereas last year it declined by nearly five percent. "It appears that depletion is now becoming a much more significant, though largely unrecognised, consideration in the supply-demand equation, and may be contributing to the rise in oil prices," said Chris Skrebowski, Editor of Petroleum Review and a Board member of The Oil Depletion Analysis Centre (ODAC), who prepared the new analysis. "With world oil demand surging faster than anyone expected, it is no wonder that current supplies are stretched to the limit," he said. CLIP

Impact Of Oil Output Fall At Ageing Fields Seen As Acute (August 27)
http://sg.biz.yahoo.com/040827/15/3mqn7.html
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Falling oil output from ageing fields, once insignificant compared with global production, has become large enough to impact world supply and may help explain the constant tightness in the oil market this year, according to analysts.Oil production is now in decline in at least 18 major producing countries including the U.S., U.K. and OPEC members Indonesia and Venezuela, and total production from this group is falling by around 1 million barrels a day every year, according to the latest data. The oil futures market can spike on a temporary outage of just a few hundred thousand barrels a day, so what is in effect a permanent outage of 1 million b/d may help explain some of the momentum behind the 53% rise in U.S. crude futures so far this year to near $50 a barrel, analysts who study depletion said. (...) "In order to merely replace lost production from now on, the industry needs to develop around 3.5 million barrels of oil a day. All our research indicates this won't be possible."

The more we grow, the less able we are to feed ourselves (29 Aug 2004)
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/environment/story.jsp?story=556266
The world is consistently failing to grow enough crops to feed itself, alarming official statistics show.Humanity has squeaked through so far by eating its way into stockpiles built up in better times. But these have fallen sharply and are now at the lowest level on record. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) latest report on global food production says that this year's harvest is expected to fall short of meeting consumption for the fifth year running.Even a forecast record harvest this year is failing to ease the crisis. This suggests that rising demand, through population growth and increasing affluence, is outpacing production, fulfilling the gloomy predictions of Thomas Malthus over 200 years ago. Warnings of increasing scarcity of two other key resources came last week. Mark Clare, the managing director of British Gas, said: "The era of cheap energy is over." And experts at an international symposium in Stockholm foretold an imminent world crisis as underground reserves of water are increasingly pumped dry. A major UN-backed conference in London this week will attempt to revive a global effort to tackle population growth. Countdown 2015 will assess an international plan of action agreed 10 years ago and make recommendations for the next decade. Between 1950 and 1997 the world's grain harvest almost trebled to around 1,900 million tons. But then production effectively stagnated: since 1999 it has fallen behind consumption every year. CLIP

China's Farmers Cannot Feed Hungry Cities (August 26, 2004)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/china/story/0,7369,1290852,00.html
No Longer Self-Sufficient in Food, the Country Today Increasingly has to Buy Abroad, Raising Global Prices - Beijing - China's leaders have raised the alarm about their country's ability to feed itself as rapid development sucks land, water and people from the food-producing countryside into increasingly large and hungry cities. After a steady fall in grain harvests, the world's most populous nation recently became a net importer of food for the first time in its history, raising domestic political concerns and driving up international prices of wheat, rice and soya.

Huge clock counts cost of Iraq war (Aug 28 2004)
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=1535613:53
AP - Two groups put up a giant digital "clock" to count the financial cost of the Iraq war, days before the Republican National Convention gets started several blocks away in New York. The "clock" was unveiled by the advocacy group Project Billboard and the Centre for American Progress, a liberal think tank headed by John Podesta, former President Bill Clinton's chief of staff. Organisers calculated the war's cost currently at $US134.5 billion ($A191.3 billion) and are adding $US177 million ($A251.7 million) per day, which comes to $US7.4 million ($A10.5 million) per hour or $US122,820 ($A174,646) per minute.

Iraqi Cleric Slams War Coverage (August 23, 2004)

Shaikh Mahdi al-Sumaidaai, the secretary general of Iraq's al-Irshad and al-Fatwa Association has accused world media of colluding with US-led occupation forces in imposing a media blackout on Iraqi resistance operations. "If media provide one hour of honest coverage to what the Iraqi resistance are doing on a daily basis, I bet you the mothers and sisters of US soldiers in Iraq will pour into the streets of America screaming at Bush to pull the troops from Iraq," he said.

In Najaf's only hospital, the cries of a grieving mother drown out the dull thud of the rockets and mortars that rain down on the city every day. Hayfa'a sits sobbing next to the small boy's hospital bed - her son's face and chest peppered with shrapnel cuts. Majed's right leg has been amputated below the knee. His other leg is heavily bandaged. His thumb and forefinger had to be removed. He has been blinded, and will never father children. (...) The Hakim General Hospital sees at least 20 emergency patients every day. Most have been injured by bullets or shells. "From the start of the war to now, 232 have been wounded and 52 killed - most civilians, but some from the police - all wounded from the bombing, the shells and the bullets," said the hospital director Dr Jawael Kadhum. "The ambulances can't work in the street because they are all closed and they are shooting and bombing randomly." And the ambulances are fast becoming a target. In the three weeks since this fighting began, five medics and drivers have been killed and more than 20 injured. CLIP

The FBI's Pre-emptive Interrogations of "Possible" Demonstrators: Chilling Political Speech
http://writ.news.findlaw.com/commentary/20040825_barr.html
25 August 2004 - The FBI, no longer content with working to maintain order at political events, is now preemptively identifying and interrogating ("interviewing") possible demonstrators. It has summarized this strategy in a memo. To make matters worse, the Department of Justice blessed the FBI strategy in its own memo - suggesting that no First Amendment concerns are raised by the interrogations. As I will explain in this column, however, the truth is quite to the contrary: The strategy, as outlined in the memo, is a serious threat to free speech. (...) No chilling effect? In the last few months, evidence has been mounting that special agents are showing up at the homes and offices of potential protesters - casting suspicion upon them in front of bosses, colleagues, family, friends and neighbors. This activity apparently has increased as the Republican Convention and the November election draw near. If that's not a chilling effect, I don't know what is. The price of free speech should not be a high-profile FBI visit that makes all who know you wonder if you may be a criminal. CLIP

Bush's War on Democracy (31 August 2004) http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/083104A.shtml
(...) As we approach the November election - and for the next four years if Bush secures another term - we can expect that opponents of the Bush administration's repressive policies will increasingly be targeted. But over 300 cities and four states have called for the repeal of the PATRIOT Act, and organizations like the National Lawyers Guild have filed lawsuits challenging the unconstitutional actions of the government. And in the largest demonstration ever at a political convention, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators registered their protest Sunday against the assault on democracy by the forces of George W. Bush.

Now, as Peter Oborne reveals, a group of MPs are determined to impeach him Peter Oborne Next month a group of British MPs will launch impeachment proceedings against Tony Blair. This is a very dramatic and powerful act, rooted deep in British history. Though once a commonplace sanction against abuse of power by the executive, the instrument of impeachment has not been used since 1848, when it was alleged that Lord Palmerston, while foreign minister, had entered into a secret treaty with Russia. Nevertheless, impeachment remains part of parliamentary law, a recourse for desperate times. Many MPs feel certain that the moment critique has now arrived. DID YOU KNOW THAT...

Children's brain development is being impaired by some of the more than 70,000 human-made chemicals on the market, says a new report from the World Wildlife Fund. The report, which surveyed current research in the field, charges chemicals with such neurological effects as poor memory, reduced visual recognition and motor skills, and lower IQ, and cites U.S. research that ties 10 percent of all neurobehavioral disorders to chemical exposure. While it singles out some chemicals by name -- particularly brominated flame-retardants, PCBs, and dioxins -- the report laments that there is little to no safety information available on most chemicals floating about in the environment and in households. "In effect, we are all living in a global chemical experiment of which we don't know the outcome," said WWF's Helen McDade. According to the National Academy of Sciences, many American children are born every year with brains damaged by prenatal exposure to methyl mercury compounds from fossil-fuel and industrial air pollution. Yet vaccines are of special concern for their toxic chemicals are injected directly into the body and some of its components pass directly through the blood brain barrier to affect the nervous system especially the brains own immune system cells, the microglia. Dr. Russell Blaylock, a prominent neurosurgeon, tells us that, "several things can activate microglia, including pesticides, MSG, viruses, mycroplasma, bacteria, stress, aluminum, mercury, and immune adjuvants."

I just received this from KT Frankovich - see below - who, since surviving hurricane Andrew in August of 1992, has been the world's leading activist exposing massive evidence of government cover-up of hurricane disasters.

Please visit her site and read the article Nexus magazine in Australia did on her experience with hurricane Andrew.

http://www.whereheavensmeet.com/nexus.html

It looks like hurricane Frances is bearing down on brother Jeb Bush's state while the Republican National Convention gets under way on "911 island" in New York State.

Alert your loves ones and stay vigilant.
Peace and God Bless,

---

The National Hurricane Bureau released their first projected path reports on Hurricane Frances last night. This hurricane is gigantic in size, being compared to Hurricane Floyd that slammed into the Carolinas and caused massive flooding and great loss of life. There were a total of 3 projected paths released by the NHB last night; two of the three path projectors have Frances slamming into the East side of Florida (around Ft. Lauderdale-Palm Beach areas) and then turning ninety degrees, so that it continues up through the middle of the state, very much like the path of Hurricane Charley; the third projectory path has it charging right up the Florida eastern seaboard. It will make landfall as a Category-5 and in all probability I will have to flee to a vacant house about thirty miles from here. A house is no match against a Catagoy-5 but at least there is a slim chance of surviving, whereas in a caravan there is no chance. You will see a mass exodus of people fleeing the state this week. The hurricane is due to arrive sometime around the weekend. I will keep you posted. -kt

Deadly Silences by k.t. Frankovich
http://www.whereheavensmeet.com/nexus.html
The largest natural disaster ever recorded in the history of the United States was Hurricane Andrew, which struck South Dade, Florida, as midnight turned the clock into August 24, 1992. Contrary to what the American news media broadcast across the United States and throughout Europe, the first outer wall of winds unexpectedly slammed into South Dade packing 214+ mph winds, which quickly escalated to 350+ mph. Most of the 414,151 residents living in the danger zone were asleep when the first outer wall of winds struck. Thousands of them lost their lives for no one in South Dade had been evacuated or even advised to evacuate. Instead, residents had been repeatedly informed by local news media that South Dade should expect to experience "50 mph winds."By 11:00 A.M. the following morning, 8,230 mobile homes had vanished off the face of the earth, along with 9,140 apartments. The Hiroshima horror was beyond catastrophic. Entire families perished in ways too horrifying to describe. The stench of death had already begun to saturate miles-and-miles of the massive devastation, reeking the hot humid air with foul rotting flesh. How do I know? Because I was in the midst of it all.Never will I forget the frantic, last-minute 'Emergency Alert!' broadcast that aired on television just before all hell broke loose.(...) As the Chief Petty Officer stated, "5,280 something bodies" were confiscated by the United States National Guard. In addition to this, the Coast Guard independently confiscated "1,500 bodies" from the lakes and surrounding waters. Neither one of these figures embraces the number of dead bodies confiscated by other branches of federal and state government directly involved in the body-pick-up operation. This leaves the number of dead confiscated by various U.S. authorities in South Dade still unknown. The total number who died during Hurricane Andrew obviously is staggering. However, the population of the twenty-one communities annihilated by Andrew's eye-wall, had been officially recorded (just before Andrew struck), as "415,151" by the Dade County Census Bureau.Bodies of human beings confiscated and disposed of like rubbish, as if their lives had no more worth or meaning than a piece of discarded litter. It's horrifying to suddenly be confronted by the same kind of atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis during this day and age. Once again repeating history, as a master-minded cover-up was dutifully carried out by armed military forces, right smack in the midst of horrendous human suffering. CLIP

NOTE FROM JEAN: Reading this article is really a gut-wrenching experience. You may experience a desire to vomit as you realize the inhumanity of the U.S. Federal government...

Three Storms Spell Flooding In East

The convergence of three weather systems has the potential to bring a serious weather situation to the Eastern Seaboard. First, a slow-moving cold front will push to the east of the Appalachian Mountains late Monday night. Southerly flow ahead of the front will continue to draw warm, moist air from the south. Second, the remnants of Gaston will move across the Delmarva Peninsula and southern New Jersey, also carrying with it a significant amount of moisture. Finally, Tropical Storm Hermine will pass through southeastern New England. Areas to the west of this storm have the potential for heavy rainfall. While not all areas will receive heavy rain due to the complex nature of this situation, some locations will receive 3-6 inches of rain by Wednesday morning, and therefore, flooding.

THE SHOUT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD

One No and a Million Yesses

A Day of Nonviolent Civil Disobedience and Direct Action During the Republican National Convention

The Republicans are coming. In a shameless effort to exploit the tragedy of 9-11, they will craft an agenda that erodes the very freedoms they claim to fight for. This is where we step in. On Tuesday August 31st, a day of non-violent civil disobedience and direct action will commence with a synchronized Shout Heard Round the World. Let the day begin with this resounding note of resistance: as clocks strike 11am, 2 days before the re-nomination of George W. Bush, the people of the world will shout NO with one voice.

From Brooklyn to Baghdad to London to Lisbon, from Selma to Sao Paulo, we'll raise our voices in this global expression of outrage. We'll open our windows, step in to the streets, walk out of our jobs, and out of our schools. We'll honk car horns, blow trumpets, bang drums, pots and pans and shout NO at the top of our lungs. The world will stand together in the streets to call for an end to empire and to call forth the possibilities for the future. A future in which the people design their own destiny.

The radical affront to democracy we see in these times calls for a radical response. Here in New York, we will converge on Madison Square Garden, the site of the Republican National Convention, and at other sites around the city. We will sit down in the streets and refuse to move. And from our clear NO will emerge a constellation of YESSES: YES to democracy, YES to justice, freedom, and peace. We'll paint a vision of the world we wish to see. We'll take over the streets--transform them into theaters, stages for resistance and forums for debate. We will draw our examples and inspiration from the brave shapers of history who came before us--those who put their bodies on the line to gain independence, win the vote, end apartheid. We seek to counter the over-represented picture-perfect postcard of New York that the politicians wish to promote. We will harness the spirit that puts our city at the center of the world stage: creativity, ingenuity, grit, social conscience. We will show the world what real democracy looks like.

We are people who work for a living. We are students, we are retirees. We are caregivers, builders, teachers, dreamers. We're the people who fight the wars, who pay taxes, who have lost our jobs. We lost loved ones on September 11th; we saw the planes of terror crash into the towers. We refuse to see our tragedy twisted to advance perverse political ends or careers. We are people who will tolerate injustice no more. We are people of conscience who speak out, even when we are afraid to do so.

And we are angry. We are dissatisfied, tired, disgusted, disenfranchised. We are ready to say "Enough!" We want more than speeches and protest pens. We want change. We want to take democracy from the Halliburtons and Enrons and bring it back to town halls, schools, and neighborhoods. A true democracy thrives on diversity: while we celebrate our differences, we stand united in our opposition to the dismantling of our dreams. United in our opposition to the dangerous direction of things. In this, we make common cause with the people of the world.

It is time to plot a new course, to wrench out a new kind of history--one of solidarity and participation, of compassion and wisdom. On August 31, 2004, we will begin to forge a new kind of story. Anything is possible. We will shape history. The only limit is the boundary of our collective imagination.

See you in the streets.

**Please send this call far and wide**

Abortion-rights protesters and the first Republican delegates descended on President Bush's heavily fortified convention city Saturday as campaign officials said their boss would use the nomination spotlight to defend his hawkish foreign polices and offer a second-term agenda for health care, education and job training. The Republican National Committee has, for the first time in its 150 year history, selected New York for their Convention from August 29-September 2, 2004. In a shallow attempt at exploiting the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the RNC has pushed the Convention date to September. We have witnessed two unjust wars, at least one American life lost each day overseas, a depressed economy, the collapse of the dollar, $87 billion to boost war profiteering, the closing of our firehouses, a health-care crisis, millions of children being left behind, and now this. We say, Enough! When the vote does not place in power those who represent the will of the people, democracy must be taken to the streets. This administration's choice of New York City, historically known for its diverse population, its welcoming of immigrants from far off lands, and its radical politics will prove to be their biggest mistake yet.

Counter Convention Overview

From August 30th through September 2nd, the Republicans will be invading New York City to nominate George W. Bush as their candidate for President. Never has a convention been hosted so late in the year and this is the first time a Republican Convention has been in New York City. Why host a convention in September? Why New York? By exploiting our grief and trauma from September 11th, the right wing intends to further their regressive political agenda. (...) Traditionally the party conventions are a potent point of protest. Because of the huge diversity of populations targeted by the Bush administrations regressive agenda, the protests around the 2004 Republican Convention are likely to be the largest in history.

Protest in the Park? Showdown Is Tomorrow (28 August 2004)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/082904F.shtml
After months of legal dickering, the city's elaborate plans to steer antiwar protesters away from Central Park will be tested tomorrow by what is widely expected to be one of the city's largest political demonstrations in decades. Although the main protest group, United for Peace and Justice, failed to win a city permit to hold a formal rally on the park's Great Lawn, it remains the ultimate destination for many participants in the march, which some organizers believe could draw up to 250,000 people. The city is equally determined to keep mass demonstrations off the park's grass, and the struggle for the moral high ground will set the tone for a week of political theater inside and out of the Republican convention. The city has created a route, agreed to by the organizers, that involves a giant U-turn for the marchers, who will travel from Union Square to Madison Square Garden and back. The organizers have asked the participants to complete the route, even though the turn downtown will take them about a mile farther from Central Park. After the march is over, the protesters will eventually be able to make their way uptown to the park, the organizers say. City officials say that there is nothing to stop people who are abiding by the law from going there - once they have moved out of the parade route's frozen zones, which will end around 32nd Street and Fifth Avenue. The stakes are high for the protesters, for both national political parties, and for Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who backs President Bush in a city where such support is a distinctly minority sentiment. CLIP

New York - Thousands of cyclists snarled traffic in New York on Friday night and police said they arrested more than 250 people and confiscated their bicycles in the first significant protest against American President George Bush before the Republican convention.More demonstrations were expected on Saturday, including a march across the Brooklyn Bridge organized by Planned Parenthood group to support women's constitutional right to choose an abortion and other reproductive health issues. There were also two events planned by peace groups opposed to the Bush administration's military and diplomatic responses to the September 11 attacks on America by Islamic militants.Friday night's protest lasted several hours at a time when central Manhattan was crowded with theatergoers and people at restaurants and bars. Traffic was brought to a virtual standstill in the chaos. CLIP

NYPD Accused of Excessive Force Early (28 August 2004)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/082904Z.shtml
New York - In the first major clash between police and demonstrators converging for the Republican National Convention, nearly 250 bicyclists were arrested during a protest ride that snaked through the city and passed by Madison Square Garden. Bikers chanted anti-Bush slogans, stifled traffic and, in some places, argued with motorists during the Friday night ride, which began at Union Square and drew thousands of cyclists. Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne said the bikers had caused "massive disruptions" and endangered motorists. Participants said their ride was peaceful and that the arrests were an excessive show of force. CLIP

Listen Up: Unusual Forms of Sound to Emanate From RNC (25 August 2004)
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/SciTech/Vote2004/high_tech_sound_040825.html
The Long Range Acoustical Device (LRAD), is shown below mounted on an NYPD vehicle. The technology, which can direct sound for four blocks, will be used to communicate with protesters at the RNC. In fact, LRAD, which is 33 inches in diameter and looks like a giant spotlight, has been used by the U.S. military in Iraq and at sea as a non-lethal force. In these settings, operators can use the device not only to convey orders, but also as a weapon. When in weapon mode, LRAD blasts a tightly controlled stream of caustic sound that can be turned up to high enough levels to trigger nausea or possibly fainting. The operators themselves remain unaffected since the noise is contained in its focused beam. (...) This is the second time the device has been used by police - Miami police also used it during the free-trade conference in that city last year. Despite the NYPD's assurances that they won't use the tool to hurt protesters, Bill Dobbs of United for Peace and Justice, which has planned protests around the convention, has told reporters that the sound system presents "a potential Big Brother nightmare."

For Those About to Rock.. (28 August 2004)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/082804A.shtml
The Big Apple is going to be crowded this week. 50,000 Republican conventioneers are about to run headlong into somewhere between 250,000 and 500,000 protesters. Salting the mix will be somewhere in the area of 10,000 New York City police, New York State police, FBI agents, Secret Service agents, SWAT teams and attack dogs. Two years ago, it might have been considered a good idea for the Republicans to come to New York for their convention. The Iraq invasion was still a product yet to be marketed, whistleblowers like Joe Wilson and Richard Clarke hadn't yet stepped to their microphones, and some of the hard truths about what really happened on September 11 hadn't yet filtered down to the streets. Flush from their victories in the 2002 midterms, the Republicans saw New York as a perfect place to strut their stuff. Funny how things change. Republican conventioneers are flowing into New York today, and they are scared. CLIP

GREAT PIECE FROM KAWINSKI! A SURE SHOCK FOR ANYONE NEW TO THE MANY REVELATIONS THAT GRADUALLY EMERGED SINCE THAT FATEFUL SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 MORNING - ALL OF WHICH IS AMPLY DOCUMENT ON THE ERN SITE AS WELL AS ON MANY OTHERS.

9/11 was staged to defame Muslims

By John Kaminski
skylax@comcast.net
Special to the Yemen Times

In addition to the millions of Americans who are protesting their nation's unjust and immoral torture of the shellshocked country of Iraq, there are also a substantial number of people in the U.S. who see through the lies of Zionist controlled U.S. mainstream media and believe the story told to them by their government about the tragedy of September 11, 2001 is merely another self-serving, nightmare fairytale meant to rally political support by the ignorant and uncaring for the continuing American/British/Israeli assault on the Islamic world.

Indeed, this small but vociferous minority of 9/11 skeptics believes that was the primary purpose of that awful day — to vilify Muslims in the collective mind of the American public and enable the Western war machine to increase its level of aggression against the Persian Gulf states without any political opposition at home. Half the plan seems to have worked. Few Americans initially questioned the official version of 9/11 and rallied round the flag, but now, as clumsy excuses for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq have been exposed throughout the world as blatant lies, even some of the most closed-minded Americans are beginning to question their government's dishonest behavior, even in regard to 9/11.

The deaths of many American troops, the sex crimes by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad, and the scandals involving misappropriated funds by giant American corporations have emerged into mainstream discussion throughout America, causing not only shame but a reconsideration of the public lies used to start these wars in the first place.

Yet, exposure of these embarrassing revelations seems to have had no tempering impact on the behavior of the U.S. military. It is a sad barometer of mainstream thought in America that President Bush's chief opponent in the upcoming election (November 2004) talks in even more warlike terms than his war-mongering opponent, so that the rest of the world can expect no change in America's charge toward violent imperialism no matter who wins the election.

Still, a vocal minority in America continues its efforts to expose the deceptions that comprise perhaps the greatest threat to political stability the world has ever known, as the Zionist-controlled neocon cabal in Washington continues its efforts to usurp all the Persian Gulf oilfields by planning a series of wars throughout the Middle East aimed at accomplishing this objective.

In both the cases of the 9/11 tragedy and the Iraq war, the great unspoken influence continues to be Israel.

The principal figure in the 9/11 mystery continues to be Larry Silverstein, who leased the World Trade Center towers months before their demise and collected a $3.5 billion insurance payout shortly after their destruction. Silverstein was caught on video ordering the destruction of one of the undamaged WTC towers after the initial damage had been done, leading to speculation that the two main towers were wired for destruction prior to the event. Silverstein, an influential official of several powerful American Jewish groups, is known to be a telephone friend of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Among the various groups in the American 9/11 skeptics movement, one dividing line appears to be the validity of the hijacker thesis. Since the FBI published a list of the names of the alleged 19 hijackers mere hours after the disaster, eight of those names have belonged to people reportedly alive and well and living in various countries. Yet the FBI has never made an attempt to change its list, nor has it attempted to question those with names used by hijackers who are still able to talk. In addition, there is no legitimate security camera videotape showing the hijackers ever got on the fateful planes, nor any record of their purchasing tickets. And their names were not included on the passenger lists recording the names of the dead.

Adding to the Israeli angle of this discussion is the distressing fact of the Israeli "art students" who were shadowing the alleged hijackers during the months prior to 9/11 were all sent home without investigation when they were "discovered."

And, after much discussion about why America chose to invade Iraq at the moment it did, the oil issue and Saddam's switch to the euro have moved to the background, while Israeli influence at the White House in Washington has come to the fore as the reason for the sudden bombing of Baghdad, especially since America's stated reasons — Saddam's connection to al-Qaida and 9/11, and his concealment of alleged weapons of mass destruction — have long since been proven groundless fabrications.

The real reason for all the fomented misery in the Middle East appears to be nothing more complex than the expansion of Israel's borders.

Bush's White House staff is dominated by Israeli operatives: Perle, Wolfowitz, Libby, Bolten, Zakheim, Feith. In addition, warmongering advisers Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Rice are inextricably linked to both the oil industry and the Zionist agenda, as is much of the leadership of the opposition party, the Democrats, which is why Americans saw a recent vote in their House of Representatives supporting Sharon's policy of wall-building and mass extermination of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories by a count of 407-9.

And yet, with all this evidence (and much more), those trying to expose the 9/11 charade don't primarily focus on Israel. Instead they devolve into convoluted theories about the peak oil scare, questionable film analysis, and some even insist that no planes were used at all in the attacks.

The solidest piece of evidence about 9/11 lies that seems to be emerging is photographic footage of the disaster at the Pentagon, which shows, from a multiplicity of angles and sequences, not a trace of the wreckage of a jetliner. A new video, "911 In Plane Site," convincingly exploits this contention with numerous shots of flames inside the Pentagon behind a relatively unblemished
wall (where the plane was supposed to have hit) with all its windows still unbroken.

Another recent revelation has involved the so-called cellphone calls from distressed passengers on the hijacked planes. It seems that cellphone calls cannot be successfully completed above 8,000 feet, and most of the purported calls were supposedly made above that altitude.

Probably the most compelling evidence for a 9/11 coverup, however, has always been the duplicitous statements made by top American officials immediately after the attacks. Cheney, Rice, and military chief Richard Myers all said that same day that they had no idea attacks like this could ever happen, but then the FBI blew their cover by releasing the names of hijackers they said they had been tracking for six months. Since that time, President Bush has worked diligently to prevent a legitimate investigation of that day's events, culminating recently in the official publication of the 9/11 Commission Report, which never attempted to fix blame on any perpetrators.

Can you imagine? The greatest crime in American history, and it was never properly investigated. Even more amazing: most Americans don't seem to have noticed this stupendous affront to honest behavior!

But that's the way it is in America, and probably always has been. Their government storms around the world shooting up innocent civilian populations and stealing the resources of underdeveloped nations, while a majority of Americans believe their brave soldiers are fighting evil terrorists and bringing justice to the unfortunate backwaters of civilization. It's basically the same situation in Palestine, about which most Americans are brainwashed by Zionist media into believing the brave Israelis are struggling for freedom against the evil bandit Palestinians, when in fact it is a population of unarmed Palestinians who are being exterminated by Israeli Jews who believe that anybody who is not a Jew is less-than-human vermin, and therefore it is OK to kill them with impunity.

Indeed, it is the world turned upside down for purposes of plunder and profit.

In understanding a little more about who the true perpetrators of all this evil violence actually are, two recent articles circulating on the Internet have been particularly instructive. The first in a ten-year old fragment of a book by religious historian David Livingstone that gets into the Jewish heritage in the Wahabbi movement within Islam, casting a serious question about motivation of Saudi royalty and its possible connection to Zionist interests, and the second is a series of pieces (all available on rense.com, as is the Livingstone essay) by the Canadian writer Henry Makow about who are the true powers in the world. Makow, a Jew who became a Christian, insists that it is the London banking cabal that controls everything, and makes the interesting point that the Zionist menace in Israel that has captured the political will of the United States is as much a danger to God-fearing Jews as it is to all the other honest, well-meaning people in the world.

What is definitely becoming clearer now, three years after the initial shock of 9/11 jolted America into all-out war mode, is that the information emanating from the big media companies all over the world is clearly and tragically twisted by an evil Zionist corruption that blames innocent people for crimes that these media whores themselves are complicit in. And because of this power, millions of people are being unjustly murdered, while soulless American corporations reap unprecendented profits. And all the while a majority of Americans wave their flags and praise the sacrifice of their young soldiers who squander their lives in a needless war based on lies.

What is encouraging is that more people around the world are realizing this every day. However, whether that will be enough to stop these soulless, money-hungry murderers from destroying the entire planet remains very much in doubt.

FORESTS ALERT: ACTION ALERT UPDATE World Bank Subsidies Threaten World's Second Largest Rainforest

By Forests.org August 25, 2004

TAKE ACTION - just updated!! World Bank, WWF and others are wrong on old-growth logging

http://forests.org/action/africa/

In March, 2004 the Rainforest Foundation revealed that the World Bank and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) seek to increase logging by sixty times in the world's second largest intact rainforest found mostly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). According to World Bank documents, they intend to "create a favorable climate for industrial logging" by subsidizing the development of comprehensive new forestry laws in the Congo, as well as the 'zoning' of the country's entire forest area. At $0.06 per hectare per year, the Bank-approved leasing of DRC's rainforests to loggers surely warrants scrutiny to determine whether this represents the true global value of those forests. Joseph Bobia, spokesperson for the Congolese development organization CENADEP, fears that as a result of industrial logging "much of the country [will be] turned into a vast logging concession."

Hundreds of environment, development, and human rights groups in the Congo, and thousands of international supporters including Forests.org's network, have called on the World Bank to stop these plans. What had been a surreptitious effort to access cheap timber in the absence of governmental authority has become a major international issue. The World Bank's President has gotten involved, and there are indications the project may be cancelled. The World Bank continues to subsidize first time industrial development of old-growth and other endangered forests in the DRC and around the world - seriously damaging the local and global environments. Please demand the World Bank and FAO immediately halt plans for the expansion of industrial logging in the Democratic Republic of Congo and remaining ancient forests around the World. Let them know the World Bank should be working with the Congolese government to help dismantle the country's corrupt and inefficient logging industry, rather than expanding it, and developing alternatives that will bring direct benefits to, and strengthens the rights of, the 35 million people living in and around the forest and depending on it for their survival.

TAKE ACTION - http://forests.org/action/africa/

P.S. The World Bank and WWF work as an alliance promoting "environmentally sensitive" first time logging of ancient old-growth forests worldwide. Please take the time to respond to the second alert (where you will be forwarded after sending the first), confronting WWF's complicity in final loss of the world's ancient forests. Demand to know where is the evidence old-growth forest can be sustainably managed?

Major temperature rise recorded in Arctic

August 28, 2004

German scientists probing global warming say they have detected a major temperature rise in the Arctic Ocean this year and linked it to a progressive shrinking of the region's sea ice.

Temperatures recorded this year in the upper 500 metres of sea in the Fram Strait - the gap between Greenland and the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen - were up to 0.6 C higher than in 2003, they said. The rise was detectable to a water depth of 2,000 metres, "representing an exceptionally strong signal by ocean standards," it said.

The experts, from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, have been recording temperatures aboard a specialised vessel, Polarstern (Pole Star), for the past six weeks. The sampling has been taking place in the West Spitsbergen Current, which carries warm water from the Atlantic into the Arctic Ocean.

The institute said water in the Fram Strait has been warming steadily since 1990 and over the past three years, satellite images had documented "a clear recession" of sea ice edges, both in the strait and the Barents Sea. The latest data "point towards a further warming tendency," the institute said.

In June, a UN organisation announced that American scientists had detected an "alarmingly rapid growth" this year in airborne concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), the fossil-fuel pollutant blamed for global warming. CO2 levels recorded in March 2004 at Hawaii measured 379 parts per million (ppm), an increase of three ppm over the previous year. By comparison, there had been an annual increase of only 1.8 ppm over the past decade.

Atmospheric concentrations of CO2 before the Industrial Revolution were 280 ppm.

The June announcement was made at a conference on renewable energies in Bonn by Joke Waller-Hunter, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - the United Nations' paramount environment accord. CO2 is the most important of the six "greenhouse" gases blamed for driving changes to the world's delicate climate system.

These gases hang like an invisible shroud in the atmosphere, trapping the sun's heat and inflicting what many scientists predict will be serious changes to icecaps, glaciers and weather patterns.

In the earth's distant past, climate change has occurred naturally, by emissions of CO2 disgorged by volcanoes and other phenomena.

But the overwhelming majority of climate experts say CO2 levels are rising fast today because of the unbridled burning of oil, gas and coal. Opinions differ, though, as to how fast the effects will occur and how bad they will be.

Earth warned on 'tipping points'

By Alex Kirby BBC News Online environment correspondent

The world has barely begun to recognise the danger of setting off rapid and irreversible changes in some crucial natural systems, a scientist says.

Professor John Schellnhuber says the most important environmental issues for humans are among the least understood.

He told a briefing in Sweden that the Asian monsoon was one of the "tipping points" that could change very quickly.

He said a better understanding of the risks was as important as the programme to prevent collisions with asteroids.

Professor Schellnhuber is research director of the UK's Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research.

High stakes

He was speaking at the EuroScience Forum in Stockholm, at a briefing by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme entitled Beyond Global Warming: Where On Earth Are We Going?

Professor Schellnhuber said 12 "hotspots" had been identified so far, areas which acted like massive regulators of the Earth's environment.

If these critical regions were subjected to stress, they could trigger large-scale, rapid changes across the entire planet. But not enough was known about them to be able to predict when the limits of tolerance were reached.

"We have so far completely underestimated the importance of these locations," he said.

"What we do know is that going beyond critical thresholds in these regions could have dramatic consequences for humans and other life forms."

One example of a hotspot was the North Atlantic current, the ocean circulation pattern responsible for bringing warmer air to northern Europe, the collapse of which could lead to a very large regional climate shift.

Faltering monsoon

Others were the West Antarctic ice sheet, the Sahara desert, and the forests of the Amazon basin. Yet another hotspot, Professor Schellnhuber said, was the Asian monsoon system.

He told BBC News Online: "Modelling has shown that if air pollution and land use change, this could alter the albedo, the reflectivity, of the land.

"This in turn could weaken or even suppress the monsoon, and there is evidence that several times in the last few years it has in fact been weaker.

"We're investing too much in things like improving the accuracy of our weather forecasts, while the really vital elements in the Earth's system are the unstable phenomena like the monsoon.

"We should have a much better understanding of these tipping points, and we have to do everything we can to stop short of triggering these instabilities.

Unforeseen speed

"That means we have to know where they are, and they've been off the radar screen for far too long.

"Scientists have begun to realise that change could be sudden, not gradual - in some cases it could happen within a few decades."

Professor Schellnhuber urged a coordinated global effort to improve understanding and monitoring of Earth's "Achilles' heels".

He said: "Such an effort is every bit as important as Nasa's valuable asteroid-spotting programme designed to protect the planet from collisions.

"If we can afford to gaze up at the sky looking for asteroids, we should be able to watch our own planet with as much care."

Experts Link Evolution of the Species to Spiritual Renaissance: DNA Called "Antennae to God"

Sandpoint , ID - More than a map of life, DNA processes spirituality according to the latest research. A lengthy review of scientific achievements in the field of genetics compiled by a team of experts indicates that life evolved from spiritual, more than physical, forces.

Three years of multidisciplinary study by a team of health science, mathematics, genetics, and physics experts, indicates that DNA, traditionally considered the "blueprint of life," appears more like an "antennae to God." Led by internationally known public health authority and award winning author, Dr. Leonard Horowitz, the group's research, to be published in October, shows that DNA's coiled design, vibrating action, and "electrogenetic" function makes spiritual as well as physical evolution possible.

Life's genomes are empowered by waves and particles of energized sound and light which, more than chemicals or drugs, switch genes "on" or "off." Likewise, genetic inheritance is energetically transmitted "bioacoustically and electromagnetically" through special water molecules that form the electrogenetic matrix of the "Sacred Spiral." These hydroelectric geometric structures˜most shaped like pyramids, hexagons, and pentagons˜direct physical as well as spiritual development, according to researchers.

Metaphysically, water molecules shaped like pyramids relay energy messages to and from DNA. These signals are carried from the environment to every cell in your body; far more rapidly than scientists once believed based solely on chemical analyses.

These findings raise important questions concerning theories underlying modern medicine, spirituality, and even reincarnation according to Dr. Horowitz. The realization that energy messages, including ancient ancestral memories, may be relayed electro-genetically can help in healing, lending spiritual meaning to life, and reconciling "past life" experiences.

The science reported in DNA: Pirates of the Sacred Spiral, published by the not-for-profit Tetra hedron Publishing Group ($29.15; 1-888-508-4787), links the genetic revolution to a "spiritual renaissance." After polling nearly 10,000 people internationally for background research, the Harvard-trained Dr. Horowitz concludes "more and more people are experiencing increased synchronicities and even miracles in their lives. . . . Working on special projects, they suddenly and inexplicably manifest everything they need to facilitate their service, purpose, or unique calling. This is a form of genetic expression as much as eye color," he says.

Their soon to be published, meticulously documented, book is written for "intelligent lay readers and above." It argues that quantum energy, often called spirituality, animates evolution of the species, genetic expression, and life. The authors believe such awareness and growing social consciousness bodes well for the entire planet.

The Tenth Pachacuti Prophecy

The Prophecy

The next (tenth) Pachacuti, according to the Q'ero, has already begun. The word pacha in the language of the Inka means "Earth" or "time." Cuti means "to turn upside-down." The upheaval and chaos characteristic of this period will last until the year 2012.

During this time the world will be turned right side up again. The ways of the Earth peoples will return. Like the Hopi, the Qero were given signs that would announce the coming of the Pachacuti. These signs led them to first come down from the mountain tops to reveal the rites of passage for slipping through time.

The prophecies speak of a time of upheaval and great opportunity in the next decade, a time when the fabric of the past will be torn, when we will be challenged to live love, heal, and even die differently.

Like the Hopi, the Lakota, and Maya, the Inka believe that the end of the decade may bring with it the end of the world as we know it, and the possibility of a millennium of gold. Although the prophecies mention the possibility of annihilation, they actually promise the dawn of a millennium of peace after this period of turmoil. They promise the emergence of a new human.

Even more important for the shamans, the prophecies speak of a tear in the fabric of time itself. They present an opportunity for us to begin defining ourselves not only in terms of who we have been in the past, but who we will become ten thousand years from now.

A Woman for All Seasons

by Bobbye Middendorf

Conscious Choice, October 2002

A writer, speaker, activist, fundraiser, and long-time leader in The Hunger Project, Lynne Twist worked tirelessly for twenty years to end world hunger. Then she was called in a dream to pursue a new direction. Indigenous peoples of the rainforest asked her to help them save their homes and culture. Following the urging of the dream, she connected with the Achuar tribe, an intact people of the Ecuadoran rainforest. Now, with husband Bill Twist, she has founded and leads a new organization, the Pachamama Alliance. Roughly translated, Pachamama means "our own Mother Earth."

Walking the First Path: The Hunger Project

In the mid 1970s, Twist was involved in the human potential movement. As part of that process, she underwent EST training, and when Werner Erhardt announced he was taking responsibility to stop world hunger, she recalls, "Something reverberated in my soul." Despite objections to Erhardt's announcement by his advisory board, the Hunger Project was born. Joan Holmes was initially named Interim Director and Twist the first staff member.

The "interim" in Holmes' title soon evaporated. As of 2002, The Hunger Project is twenty-five years old. Controversy dogged the organization in its early days, but by the early 1990s, Twist was mobilizing tens of thousands of people worldwide and turning into a folk hero in the movement. "I loved it and also felt overwhelmed by the magnitude of responsibilities. I knew I needed to step back and let other stars shine," she says. In 1993, Twist arranged a sabbatical, although after living and breathing The Hunger Project for so long, she didn't think she would be able to stay away. While it took six weeks to let go, she finally settled into spending time with her children, meditating, trekking the Himalayas, and living life outside the Hunger Project.

Upon returning, Twist had difficulty finding her place. "People had risen to the occasion," she notes. Speaking engagements kept her busy, however, and other nonprofits sought her expertise. When she met Bob Graham, whose organization was called Katalysis, and John Perkins, an expert in South American shamanism and environmentalism, Twist made the contacts that would prove to be her second calling.

Seeding New Dreams for Pachamama

Perkins pointed Twist to what she wasn't embracing in her hunger work, including the environment. Into her dreams came faces from the Amazon rainforest. During one shamanic journey, Twist and her husband Bill felt they became one with the plants of the rainforest. "It wasn't our plan, but it did seem to be our destiny. We would join the Achuar in hearing the spirit of the forest authentically, letting its voice guide us to preserve their home and the rainforest for us all. We were to find a way for human life to be a sustainable endeavor. From that night, my life began to unfold."

This second calling to a different life path left Twist with a dilemma. The Hunger Project was coming up to its twentieth anniversary, and, she says, "I knew I was done. But for decades, I'd always said, 'I will be here to the end. You can count on me.' I didn't know how to live with myself." Tortured by the realization that this was no longer her path, Twist, confused, exhausted, and as it turned out, seriously ill, took a leave of absence. Nine months passed before two strains of malaria were discovered. "The illness was the cataclysm that I needed to actually say, 'I'm complete with the Hunger Project.'"

Meanwhile, the Pachamama Alliance had begun on the strengths of Bill Twist's efforts. Following a model similar to that of the Hunger Project, Lynn Twist is leading the Pachamama Alliance to co-create projects in partnership with the indigenous tribes of the rainforests. "Our goal is to preserve the rainforests by empowering the indigenous peoples who are its natural custodians," she says. "We are working to create a new global vision of equity and sustainability for all life. We are creating an alloy of consciousness between the indigenous people and the modern world people. We are coming together to learn how to build a sustainable culture for human life." The voice of the rainforest and its indigenous people is another voice in the global dialogue, one that has been missing. The Pachamama Alliance is a vehicle to get these important voices heard.

The Prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor

Twist speaks eloquently of an Amazon prophecy foretold for thousands of years. It is this prophecy that The Pachamama Alliance is designed to bring to fruition. "During the ninth Pachacuti, that started around 500 years ago, the eagle peoples will dominate the Earth. The people of the eagle are those of us of the material world, of the mind and intellect, the modern technological world.

"At the beginning of the tenth Pachacuti, the people of the eagle will have reached a zenith in creating technologies. They will have material wealth beyond imagination. With that will come a spiritual impoverishment that puts their very survival at risk. The people of the condor live through the heart and the senses. They will have a profound and developed relationship with the natural world, with spirits. They will be flooded with spiritual power, but will be materially impoverished to their peril. They are especially impoverished in their dealings with the eagle people."

According to the prophecy, "At the beginning of the tenth Pachacuti, the eagle and condor will remember that they come from one place. They will fly together in the same sky, wing to wing. In other words, mind and heart will rejoin. Intellect and senses will reconnect. The world will come into balance in a miraculous way, but not before Pachamama herself will humble all creatures to remember their rightful role in relation to her." The Great Mother, according to the prophecy, will tremble and shake, create great climate change, floods. Continues Twist, "The people of the Amazon see in their dream that they will prevail, yet they realize they must play their role, they must participate completely in producing the outcome. We each need what the other has."

Getting to Enough

What we do not need is the oil under the rainforest or more grazing land or more products made from rainforest woods. In the South, projects from the Pachamama Alliance are designed to build a coalition of tribes and NGOs to create an economic alternative to destruction in the rainforests. "We must make the forests more valuable as the living lungs of the planet than razed for products or mutilated for oil. We are bringing the best thinking of the modern world, the macroeconomic thinking, to reshape how the world economic system sees the Amazon, as a different kind of value."

As the Pachamama Alliance works on projects in the forests, its connections in the North are creating commitments for members to live more sustainably. Each New Moon, in traditional cultures a time for reflection and renewal, Pachamama Alliance members commit to take one action to live more lightly on the land or reconnect to nature. Month in and month out, members grow in consciousness to take daily actions and lighten their footprint on the earth. In the daily gestures of renewal, Twist points out, "These are things that count twice. First, people stop doing damage. Second, the resources they would have spent driving the destruction of the rainforests in some way, are redirected to preservation and sustainability."

What Twist wants people to discover is the idea of sufficiency. "In a culture of the 'runaway more,' richer, thinner, smarter, better, there is no way to be satisfied. We have lost the meaning of 'enough' -- from businesses, societies and communities, to the dinner table. The 'more is better' mentality is becoming the nightmare that is killing the planet. We need a new relationship with 'enough.' In the culture of scarcity that is generated in our consumer culture, there is no moment of sufficiency. We have to help people reclaim that."

Turning the Tide

Some are stepping out of the cycle, realizing the perfection of the moment when they can say, "Enough." Twist has gathered twelve leaders of social innovator organizations to maintain that conversation, to uncover what is needed for social and cultural transformation. Calling it the Turning Tide Coalition, Twist observes, "If we can see and say the tide is turning, in all kinds of arenas we all care about, that galvanizes people to participate in turning the tide faster. We have to be bold and courageous and take a stand that, by God, the tide is turning and you can be part of it. The goal of the Turning Tide Coalition is to take that stand, to herald the turning tide, and to ignite a conversation for people's participation."

For indigenous peoples, dreams are important. This is something that many in the "eagle" culture must learn. For us, the "dream" is often projected into TV, films, the popular culture. Looking at such dreams, we face nightmare futures no one wants to live in. Twist points out that if we are watering and fertilizing such nightmares with our attention, it may be time to wake up while we still can. "Attention is precious. What we attend to, what we appreciate, does grow and flourish. If we put our attention in what is dark, unless we are engaging with the darkness to turn it around, then it will be toxic. The world is as we dream it. This can be our tool, the place where we can put our hands on the levers and dials for creating a dream that is worthy of the human family, that is worthy of all life."

State Shines in Solar Potential

WITH THE recent release of an energy report that ranks Illinois as one of the best places in the country to harvest solar energy, it’s time to look at sunshine as something more than just a place to have fun in this summer, said Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn.

Quinn is chairman of Illinois’ first Renewable Energy Task Force, which was set up by Governor Rod Blagojevich to spare Chicagoans the same dark fate that resulted when New York’s power grid failed last summer.

“We have more recoverable solar energy than Los Angeles,” said Quinn. He added that the arrival of August usually results in the year’s hottest, or “peak days,” for the power grid at the very time it’s best to stay off of it to avoid a blackout.

Quinn pointed to Chicago restaurant owner Salvador Lamas as an example of a small business owner who took advantage of government programs promoting alternative energy systems.

Lamas, the owner of Taco Burrito King at 5413 W. Belmont Ave. in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood, received a rebate of $5,000 from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Renewable Resources Fund. The federal government also gave him a 10 percent investment tax credit when he installed a solar-powered energy system.

Lamas celebrated the June grand opening of his new restaurant with a buffet-style feast that featured Margaritas and menu items like tacos bathed in his “hot-as-the-sun” salsa. But the hottest item on display was the new solar thermal energy system designed to naturally heat 500 gallons of water to 120 degrees each day.

Lamas said the decision to install the solar panels was easy. “Our gas bill was extremely high so, when we were building, we looked for ways to reduce energy cost,” he said.

By channeling the solar heat, the system saves 5,000 BTUs of natural gas each day. “I care for the environment,” Lamas said. “Wasting fossil fuels is my biggest pet-peeve.”

The solar heating equipment and installation cost $30,000, but Lamas expects to recoup that in energy cost savings after the first five to six years of the system’s 30-year-lifetime.

“All that you lose with this system is a great big energy bill,” said the system’s installer, Brandon Leavitt, of Chicago-based Solar Services Inc.

Leavitt said he fears that worsening state financial woes could threaten programs that help local business owners invest in solar power. But, “The state has to make a commitment to renewable energy in all its forms,” Quinn said.

Chicago Hopes to Double Wind Power

IN THE “Windy City” buildings are constructed to withstand powerful gusts, but now city officials are looking into ways of channeling the force of these winds into a renewable energy source for City of Chicago buildings.

One place the city is looking to is Mendota Hills Wind Farm in Lee County, Ill., which generates 125 million kilowatt hours of energy annually. That’s enough electricity to power 15,000 homes for a year.

“City officials are looking for a third party to distribute the energy,” said Sadhu Johnston, assistant to Mayor Richard M. Daley in green initiatives.

The initiative is part of the Department of Environment’s plan to shift 20 percent of the city’s energy needs to renewable sources by 2006, according to Johnston. He said the city is halfway to that goal with 10 percent of the electricity pumped into city buildings derived from wind and solar power.

The city’s Department of General Services, which manages and operates all city buildings, started to purchase renewable energy from ComEd in 2001, said Johnston. At that time most of the power came from methane gas extracted from landfills.

Chicago is moving to a more sustainable world “step-by-step,” Johnston said.

Nationally, only eight percent of total U.S. energy consumption comes from renewable energy sources, according to the Chicago Solar Partnership Website. Most cities across the country are powered by burning coal for energy.

Illinois has 22 coal-burning plants, which impacts air quality, according to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. City officials are intent on decreasing the state’s reliance on energy derived from coal and nuclear power.

Mendota Hills Wind Farms, which boasts 63 turbines spread across 2,600 acres, produces energy without spewing pollution into the air. The turbines are powered by wind-driven metallic panels that extend about 85 feet out from 213-foot-high towers.

The Chicago Solar Partnership advocates using renewable energy in an effort to reduce both energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

Vast new energy source almost here

Solar hydrogen fuel dream will soon be a reality

Australian scientists predict that a revolutionary new way to harness the power of the sun to extract clean and almost unlimited energy supplies from water will be a reality within seven years.

Using special titanium oxide ceramics that harvest sunlight and split water to produce hydrogen fuel, the researchers say it will then be a simple engineering exercise to make an energy-harvesting device with no moving parts and emitting no greenhouse gases or pollutants.

It would be the cheapest, cleanest and most abundant energy source ever developed: the main by-products would be oxygen and water.

"This is potentially huge, with a market the size of all the existing markets for coal, oil and gas combined," says Professor Janusz Nowotny, who with Professor Chris Sorrell is leading a solar hydrogen research project at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Centre for Materials and Energy Conversion. The team is thought to be the most advanced in developing the cheap, light-sensitive materials that will be the basis of the technology.

"Based on our research results, we know we are on the right track and with the right support we now estimate that we can deliver a new material within seven years," says Nowotny.

Sorrell says Australia is ideally placed to take advantage of the enormous potential of this new technology: "We have abundant sunlight, huge reserves of titanium and we're close to the burgeoning energy markets of the Asia-Pacific region. But this technology could be used anywhere in the world. It's been the dream of many people for a long time to develop it and it's exciting to know that it is now within such close reach."

The results of the team's work will be presented in Sydney on 27 August to delegates from Japan, Germany, the United States and Australia at a one-day International Conference on Materials for Hydrogen Energy at UNSW.

Among them will be the inventors of the solar hydrogen process, Professors Akira Fujishima and Kenichi Honda. Both are frontrunners for the Nobel Prize in chemistry and are the laureates of the 2004 Japan Prize.

Since the Japanese researchers' 1971 discoveries, science has made major advances in achieving one of the ultimate goals of science and technology – the design of materials required to split water using solar light.

The UNSW team opted to use titania ceramic photoelectrodes because they have the right semiconducting properties and the highest resistance to water corrosion.

Solar hydrogen, Professor Sorrell argues, is not incompatible with coal. It can be used to produce solar methanol, which produces less carbon dioxide than conventional methods. "As a mid-term energy carrier it has a lot to say for it," he says.

Subject: Just how much oil HAVE we burned up? A few calculations
Date: 27 Aug 2004

From: map@economicdemocracy.org

Just how much oil HAVE we burned up? A few calculations..

Consider this:

* Currently the world burns 30 billion barrels of oil per year.

Multiplying by 42 we get that the world uses

* 1.26 trillion gallons per year

The surface of the earth is 509,600,000 square kilometers, or(509,600,000)*(1,000,000) square meters Dividing the previous number into the surface area of the Earth, we get that

* Each year we burn a gallon of oil for every(509,600,000,000,000)/(1,260,000,000,000) = (509,600)/(1,260) = 404 square meters, about the area of a circle of radius 11.3meters (radius of 34 feet).

* If we use only the land mass of the earth, then a gallon of oil is burned every year for each 117 square meters, or about the area of a circle of radius 6.1 meters (just over 18 feet in radius).

Such a gallon of oil would is burned every year for EVERY segment of that area on the entire surface of the earth -- every such bit of land in the Sahara desert, every such bit of land in the Amazon, every such bit of land in every city, town, field, hillside, etc, etc, on the entire Planet Earth.

Now let us examine the entire history of the use of oil; we've used up about 900 billion barrels of oil, or about 37,800 billion gallons (37.8 trillion barrels). Dividing this into the surface area of the Earth including the Pacific and Atlantic and other oceans and seas, we get a ratio telling us that,

* The amount of oil we've burned already equals on gallon of oil for every

* (509,600,000,000,000)/(37,800,000,000,000) = (509,600)/(37,800) = 13.48 square meters.

13.48 square meters is the area of a square just 3.67 meters (about 11 feet) on a side. Or to make it more visual, 13.48 square meters is the area of a circle having a radius of only 2.07 meters! That's a circle of radius a hair over 6 feet!

Imagine holding a short piece of rope 6 feet long, and sweep it around you in a circle. It's the small area that you'd have if a 6 foot tall person plants their feet on the ground, lies down, and then imagining sweeping out a circle with their body as radius.

If you had a gallon of oil you could certainly pour it on the ground and have it spread fully and completely over such a small area with an amount of liquid having visible (NOT microscopic) thickness. Which means you could cover the entire earth this way.

Now imagine lighting a match and lighting the entire Earth with a huge *BOOM* -- letting all that oil burn on its full entire surface. And yet, you don't have to imagine, because we already *have* burned that much oil.

However again that includes the entire surface of the land on Earth plus all the Oceans and seas...what about "just" the entire dry land surface of the earth..all the countries on all the continents combined? Let's compute: we have already burned one gallon of oil for every(148,326,000,000,000) / (37,800,000,000,000) = (148,326) / (37,800) = 3.9 square meters of land on Earth; that's a square 1.98 meters on a side, a square about 5.9 feet on a side.

Finally to better visualize this by sweeping an area around you with your body acting as the center of the circle, this is the area of a circle of radius square-root(3.9 /pi) or a circle whose radius is only about 1.11 meters, or about 3 feet and 4 inches long! For all intents and purposes, one can take a meter-long stick and hold that stick a mere 10 centimeters away from one's body, and then sweep out a circle around oneself (you folks giving TALKS about Peak oil might want to try this with a prop when speaking to an audience..)

That yardstick, or meter-long stick sweeps around you (with a tiny 10 centimeter gap between your body and the stick) an area such that we have ALREADY burned a gallon of oil for EVERY such area of land mass on all of the land area, on all the continents, on the entire Planet Earth. (An Earth whose atmosphere, compared to the radius of the earth, is barely a tiny paper-thin layer around our planet) Something to think about. . .

Postscript: None of this "proves" how bad oil peak or climate change are; but one can hardly avoid, if one is honest with oneself, a heavy realization of the sheer magnitude of what we have done --and to this day continue to do-- a realization that no longer lets one dismiss these issues out of hand. A realization which calls for a sobering commitment -- if we care about the future of our children and this planet -- to a careful, honest, thorough assessment of just what the magnitude and nature really are, of the peak oil and climate change threats we face.

'Energy Suppression -- An Invisible Galaxy of Inventions'
http://www.greaterthings.com/News/FreeEnergy/Directory/Essays/suppression_bird.htm
In its July 17, 1995, Australia edition, Time magazine rounded up a list of future technologies that would change the world as we know it. In doing so, they made the following prediction: "The first company to design an affordable car that doesn't foul the atmosphere will race past its competitors." Not only was Time totally wrong in saying this, but it's quite probable that their misstatement was an intentional lie. The simple fact is that the technology to create an "affordable car that doesn't foul the atmosphere" has been known for most of the last century. It's just that the oil companies, who cannot make money from such vehicles, will not allow the public to have them. My First Experience: The Game Is Afoot My own story began late one night as I was driving home listening to talk radio. Somebody piped up that they'd been working on a solar-powered car out at the local airport. They said that it was as cheap and safe as an average family car, and that it was all ready to go. All you needed was about $5 worth of fuel per year to get it started. The startled DJ asked when we were likely to see this car in the marketplace, and the caller coolly replied, "Probably never. I'd say that the oil companies will buy us out in a flash." I nearly crashed my car! What on earth was going on here? (...) More Energy Inventions That They Don't Want Us to Know About Since meeting Mike Holland, I have managed to collect quite a list of energy inventions that have somehow avoided being utilized in the marketplace. You may not believe that all of them work - but it would be very difficult to claim that none of them do. Here is the evidence. You decide for yourself. In 1978, Yull Brown of Sydney, Australia, developed a method of extracting hydrogen from water and utilizing it as car fuel and as fuel for welders. After much publicity (see Australia's The Bulletin, August 22, 1989), he had managed to raise over $2 million, but has failed to fully develop his invention. Francisco Pacheco, an inventor from Bolivia, created the "Pacheco Bi-Polar Autoelectric Hydrogen Generator" (U.S. Patent No. 5,089,107), which separates hydrogen from seawater. He has built successful prototypes that have fueled a car, a motorcycle, a lawnmower, a flashlight, and a boat. And most recently, in 1990, he energized an entire home in West Milford with the device. After many conferences (including at the United Nations) and public exhibitions proving the invention's worth, the wider community is still unable to utilize this technology. CLIP - MOST INTERESTING! The Looking Glass

The energetic evolution of a series of events that bring growth
Visions of a community with a focus : change ; a healthy environment
For the growth and dedication to the harmonization of myself and my surroundings.
The catalyst for change resides inside,
As a tree sheds it's leaves in the autumn,
So does the wise man remove all that is a waste of his attention :
Dedication and direction to the True Path to one's Spirit
Shall not be impeded upon during the hibernative slumber of meditation :
My daily life is a constant meditation
Daily life is a constant reflection,
The state of the artist when molding the clay,
The refraction of the purity of motive
The action of a responsive world
I was told how only the strong survive in a dog-eat-dog‚ world,
But what kind of mammal has to eat it's own to live ? ? ?
And why would one want to exist on a planet that defines cannibalism as survival ?
No wonder the cows have gone mad and the mass metamorphize to swine,
Easily swayed by the slaughter of it's own ; written off as a doctor's prescription,
The false planetary addiction to lies deceit and misinformation.
The last time that I contemplated God she showed me an acronym,
Describing the mass hysteria of a teetering humanity on the edge of self-delusion
Gold, Oil, and Drugs ˆ as she asked even me, "Why?"
I surely did not know, for my assumption would have been, that as galactic children grow
Energy efficiency in it's highest potentiality would have been key!
Homeostasis a given, for we wear the mother's skin _ the same twinkle of eye,
The perception through the looking glass, Gaia bids her time and cries to me ;
The god she knows is of flowers, geometry and love,
A systematic resonance, one with the ebb and flow of the universe,
One with the flowing wind lustrous across a barren moonlit sky
The mountains sing songs of waterfalls long ago eroding sweet wind tunnels,
For the passage of breath is as a door of perception awaiting to be unlocked and explored
Rutilation directs strands of consciousness, jutting into it's void,
Not truly understanding it's nature : just truly understanding nature
Quartz points chant mantra after mantra across a distorted timeline,
Manifesting the eyes needed to perceive this anomaly labeled physical existence ;
So matter is never destroyed, just recycled and changed by natural laws
So who recycles war machines and what are the natural laws aligned with greed ?
Self destruction, famine, and desolation ; a starving of one's nutritional needs
Humanities focus seems to be too hell-bent on destruction
The attempted new-age‚ visionaries say "Focus on the light"
But I swear it feeds the darkness,
A chained monster growing from the depths of man's disillusion
Unjust to oneself
Denying the truth
Wanting to heal
In a dark room labeled addiction
Addicted to the energies of the least favorable intent
Addicted to oneself
Addicted to others
Addicted to light
Visions of darkness apparent to the sum of creation,
I stand in the center of source,
Beyond light and darkness
Beyond good and evil
Pondering in eternity pathways of neurological lightning
If a tree falls in the woods
Will the humans cut down all the trees
Awaiting the awakening avatar
Remembrance of truth
Access to many mansions of knowledge ;
The result of infinite experimentation with consciousness
To maintain a sacred space and way of life
A grain of sand in a barrel of gems,
Riding golden waves of inspiration
The laughter heals the wounds and comforts the sighs of the fallen leaves
Dark angels riding tidal frustrations with reigns of fire
Transmutation through evaporation : The energy spirals, dancing it's cosmic dance
The perfection of display through the individualization of the snow
Melts with solitude under the hypnotic rhythm of spring
The rain delivers the seed of life as Gaia's majestic tree
Drives it's roots deeper within the ancient soil
Humanities razor edged vice is placed upon it's own roots :
Burning the connection to the most essential building block of matter
The very life blood of life
Our purest essence shimmers in the distance
Throughout the altered history books we seem to refuse the black and the white
Allowing our future to remain handcuffed to the handicaps of the past
We make the same mistakes over and over as sure as the orbits across the Galactic Night
We remain bound to the inherent errs of our leaders as we too often close our ears to the whispers of love infused in the hardships ;
In our own time we shall prevail
The Great Works shall not be left unfinished as many shall walk the road to spirit
The ripples of Christ reverberate my being with the knowledge that
I am the seven seals walking
No separation between you and I
We signed onto this planet together
As great cosmic alchemists amongst the ineffable.
