Read the poignant story of young Iraqi girl Israa Abdul Amir (...) severely injured in a missile attack conducted by the US military on the morning of January 25, 1999. She had just finished a test at the Al Najed primary school and was walking home from school when the missile struck. A large piece of shrapnel severed her right arm below the shoulder and she suffered chest and abdominal wounds. A metal fragment remains lodged in her skull, a souvenir of the American Empire; doctors could not remove it for fear of killing her. Israa was nine years old. Palestinian female prisoners in Telmond start hunger strike to protest against inhumane treatment (December 2, 2004) ABSOLUTELY APPALLING!

To protest against the manner in which the prison administration deals with female Palestinian prisoners and in particular against the beating of their spokeswoman and her subsequent isolation, the remaining Palestinian female detainees began screaming and shouting. The guards responded by bringing in other troops, armed with batons, water hoses and tear gas, who began to beat the women and spray them with water and gas. As a result of the brutal attack, one prisoner, Sana Amer, suffered probable fractures to an arm and a leg, while two other Palestinian prisoners, Suad Ghazal and Asma' Hussain both sustained probable arm fractures. Many other prisoners were also injured by the guards. The prison administration did not provide medical or first aid treatment to the injured detainees. Instead, they placed a further 13 prisoners in the punishment cells. There were further reprisals awaiting those who returned to their normal cells. The administration confiscated all electrical appliances in the rooms, and the personal supplies of food and cigarettes which the women had bought with their own money from the canteena. In a deliberate effort to make the miserable living conditions even worse, guards sprayed cold water all over the prisoners' belongings, soaking their mattresses and clothes. Given that it is winter, the women were not able to dry the bedding, so were forced to sleep in cold damp beds. The prison administration cut the prisoners' electricity and water supplies, and the smell of the tear gas continues to cling to the walls of the cells. The person who has suffered the most is Nor, the 1-year old son of Manal Ghanem. He was born in prison on 10 October 2003 and has never been outside the Telmond compound. After being sprayed by water and gas, Nor developed a serious cold. He was not provided with any medication.  CLIP

Sources with details of the vote rigging stated that some foreign nationals were involved in the reprogramming of Diebold and other machines in the four key states of Florida, Ohio, Texas, and California. The technicians successfully padded votes in Ohio to ensure that state's 20 electoral votes went to the Bush column. In populous counties in Florida, Texas, and California, the vote padding ensured that Bush's nationwide popular vote margin was well in excess of 3 million votes, giving him 51 percent of the national vote over John Kerry. One unsuccessful Democratic candidate in California voiced concerns about whether the alleged vote padding in his state affected his own vote count.Vote padding for Bush's popular vote may have also been used in Maryland. Sources familiar with the Votergate scandal have stated that foreign nationals from Mexico, Brazil, and Russia were used to "fix" selected machines in critical counties and precincts in Florida, Ohio, Texas, and California. Moreover, some of these individuals have been associated with organized crime activity, including computer hacking, in the United States and abroad. Those familiar with the use of Diebold machines to commit voter fraud have revealed that the hardware and software used in Diebold machines used in casinos and polling places is essentially the same, including the back door used to dial in over telephone lines to change payoff odds in gambling machines. The same mechanism was used to change votes, the sources contend. Toledo, Ohio - President Bush's victory over John Kerry in Ohio was closer than the unofficial election night totals showed, but the change is not enough to trigger an automatic recount, according to county-by-county results provided to The Associated Press on Friday. Bush's margin of victory in the state that put him over the top in his re-election bid will be about 119,000 votes, which is smaller than the unofficial margin of 136,000, the county election board figures showed. That means Kerry drew closer by about 17,000 votes. (...) Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell will certify the results Monday. Baghdad - More than 200,000 people who fled Falluja ahead of the U.S. offensive have yet to return and many are in desperate need of aid, with temperatures in Iraq heading towards freezing, a new U.N. emergency report says. Figures compiled by the International Organization for Migration show that 210,600 people, or more than 35,000 families, took refuge in towns and villages around Falluja in the build up to the U.S. assault, launched on November 8. Nearly all those people remain outside the city, where the population was estimated at 250,000-300,000 before the attack. U.S. forces are maintaining a cordon around Falluja as sporadic fighting continues and are preventing refugees from returning, saying they want to stagger the return so that basic facilities can be restored before people go home. Most areas of the city remain without power, water, sewage and other basic services and it is expected to take much longer than previously thought to start reconstruction as hundreds of buildings are completely destroyed. "The return to Falluja may take a matter of months rather than days, as was previously suggested by multi-national forces," the document entitled "Emergency Working Group - Falluja Crisis" and distributed by the United Nations said. The report, compiled by various aid agencies and released this week, says access to the camps for internally-displaced people is sporadic due to insecurity and military operations. (...) Since October, when families first began fleeing Falluja, temperatures in central Iraq have fallen from around 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) to 35 Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius) and sometimes colder overnight. Here is an update on what's going on at the Agency. The CIA is in a state of turmoil. Porter Goss, the new CIA director, has issued a new directive, which is very simple: Support the Bush-Cheney Regime. Or else. There will be no more trying to undermine the Regime by telling the truth on such subjects as weapons of mass destruction, missing billions from the defense budget, what it's actually going to cost for Iraq and Afghanistan, or how long we‚re actually going to be there. What he has effectively done is stopped all dissemination of truth from the Agency. And this is what it all means. There will be no more leaks to the media. He's not even allowing any more policy updates to various committees on the Hill without his personal approval, unless he reads them first. To use an old Langley expression, the TC, or Truth Content, must now be absolute zero. Even Bill Casey didn't have an absolute zero truth content dissemination policy out of the Agency. But that is what he has now done. That is the new Agency policy for public representations as well as policy statement and operations updates to the relevant committees on the Hill. And from now on they take all political marching orders from Karl Rove. He's the guy that's giving the marching orders from the White House. CLIP

As Democrats continue to search heaven and earth for a moral values issue they can call their own, I have just the prescription: Why not start with the immoral behavior of giant drug companies such as Merck that continue to sacrifice the health of the public on the altar of higher and higher profits?According to last week’s Senate testimony by Dr. David Graham, associate director for science and medicine in the FDA’s Office of Drug Safety, as many as 55,000 patients may have died as a result of taking Vioxx. Shocking. But not to Merck, which had spent hundreds of millions of dollars convincing Americans to take its blockbuster pain pill even though the company’s own studies showed that it greatly increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes. (...) Merck’s actions throughout the entire Vioxx affair have been utterly despicable. When the company pulled the drug off the market in September, CEO Raymond Gilmartin claimed that the scientific findings that led to the withdrawal were “unexpected.” This is like releasing a ravenous wolf into a pen full of sheep, then acting surprised that lamb chops are on the menu. Recently uncovered internal Merck documents show that, as far back as 1998 — a year before the drug was even approved by the FDA — the drug giant had evidence indicating that Vioxx was a potential killer. (...) Speaking of ads, the most loathsome aspect of the whole Vioxx affair is the way Merck used a $500 million marketing campaign to persuade over 20 million Americans to pop its noxious little pill. And company executives continued to run these ads long after they knew there was big trouble brewing. CLIP

20 Ways The World Could End

We've had a good run of it. In the 500,000 years Homo sapiens has roamed the land we've built cities, created complex languages, and sent robotic scouts to other planets. It's difficult to imagine it all coming to an end. Yet 99 percent of all species that ever lived have gone extinct, including every one of our hominid ancestors. In 1983, British cosmologist Brandon Carter framed the "Doomsday argument," a statistical way to judge when we might join them. If humans were to survive a long time and spread through the galaxy, then the total number of people who will ever live might number in the trillions. By pure odds, it's unlikely that we would be among the very first hundredth of a percent of all those people. Or turn the argument around: How likely is it that this generation will be the one unlucky one? Something like one fifth of all the people who have ever lived are alive today. The odds of being one of the people to witness doomsday are highest when there is the largest number of witnesses around— so now is not such an improbable time. Human activity is severely disrupting almost all life on the planet, which surely doesn't help matters. The current rate of extinctions is, by some estimates, 10,000 times the average in the fossil record. At present, we may worry about snail darters and red squirrels in abstract terms. The report omits to mention that Monsanto control over 90% of total world area sown to transgenic seeds. The FAO report, Agricultural biotechnology: meeting the needs of the poor? states that GMOs could be key to solving world hunger, and pushes for more funding. The report was denounced by 650 worldwide civil society organisations in an open letter to the Director of the FAO in Rome. The letter, signed by 800 individuals from more than 80 countries, demanded structural changes in access to land, food and political power, to be combined with support for sustainable technologies in farmer-led research. It was also rejected by five international NGOs at a Hunger, Food Aid and GMOs meeting at Maputo, Mozambique in July 2004. Via Campesina, an organisation representing the interests of peasant-farmers worldwide said that promoting a technological solution to the problem of hunger in the form of GM crops is "a slap in the face for those who defend food sovereignty." The development of industrial agriculture has already caused millions of rural people to be displaced from their lands and condemned them to lives of misery. The failure of the Indian government and an American corporation to tackle the after-effects of one of the worst industrial accidents in history has left a legacy of continuing pollution and inadequate medical care for survivors, according to a report released today. Days before the 20th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster in India a study has shown that survivors are still desperately in need of medical treatment and have not been properly compensated. On the night of 2 December 1984, poisonous methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal. Thousands were killed immediately. Thousands more were to die from the effects of that night in the months and years that followed. Now, Amnesty International has claimed that neither the Indian government nor Union Carbide have done enough to provide proper redress for the victims or to clean up the site. CLIP
