Heroes of Our Times Series #5: Bless Be The Peacemakers

Hello everyone

I was not expecting to be able to send you another compilation so quickly but, as usual, there are too many important and MUST-KNOW developments and news that came my way to allow for any delay. The initial theme of this compilation centers around the recent actions and initiatives of ERN subscribers who are making a much need contribution towards world peace and global awakening as you will see below. I especially recommend to your attention the release by Alex Kochkin of the Foundation For Global Awakening (and associated organizations) of the hope-stirring conclusion of their National Research Study, The New America Papers (, which emphasizes that "Americans and most of humanity have the potential and capacity to develop new ways of being that transcend old patterns of fear, conflict, retribution, and domination." The contributions by Richard Fletcher and Frank Dorrel below should also be of interest to many of you.

And then there are numerous news about the situation in Iraq and the reckless war preparations by Israel (with US help) against Iran (see #10 below) as well that the continuing oppression, death and destruction visited upon an entire helpless people by the mighty Israeli army, news which are obviously at the extreme opposite of what the peacemakers are trying to achieve.

A Prayer for America - new book just published by Dennis Kucinich
Reading this collection of inspiring speeches on a wide variety of topics is the next best thing to hearing Dennis speak in person. Very few Americans are likely to be able to read this book and not be moved by it. There are few things you can do that will benefit the campaign more than buying 10 or more books and giving them to your friends and relatives. Give them to people who are undecided. Give them to people who don't vote (yet!). Give them to Republicans. The pen is supposed to be mightier than the sword. Let's see if it's mightier than corporate campaign contributions!

Series of blasts rocks Baghdad (Oct 27)
BAGHDAD - A suicide bomber rammed an ambulance packed with explosives into security barriers outside the offices of the international Red Cross on Monday, and an American general said about 10 people were killed in the blast. The blasts came a day after after insurgents attacked a heavily guarded hotel, killing an American colonel.

US vows to crush resistance after Iraq attack (Oct 27)
Paul Wolfowitz, the deputy civilian chief at the Pentagon, promised an "unrelenting" effort to crush Iraqi resistance after his hotel in Baghdad was hit by a barrage of rockets early yesterday. An American colonel was killed and 15 other soldiers and officials in the Coalition Provisional Authority, including a Briton seconded from the Treasury, were injured. Mr Wolfowitz, one of the chief architects of the war in Iraq, emerged unscathed from the al-Rasheed hotel after at least eight rockets were fired into the building three stories below the 12th floor where he was sleeping. A shaken and ashen-faced Mr Wolfowitz, who was on a visit to Iraq intended to highlight the reconstruction process and improvements in security, described the attack as "the desperate acts of a dying regime of criminals".

The war that could destroy both armies (Oct 23)
The undeclared US war on Iraq ended some six months ago in a matter of weeks, mostly through bribery of an Iraqi high command infiltrated by US special operations that had been embedded during years of better relations in the Iran-Iraq War and military cooperation with its US counterpart, making treasonous plots possible. That may explain why the US high command had been so confident of a quick victory in defiance of mainstream military logic.

Rumsfeld's Pentagon Papers (October 23)
His leaked memo is the most astonishing document of this war so far. Donald Rumsfeld's war-on-terror memo - which was leaked to USA Today on Wednesday and picked up by the rest of the media, for the most part with a shrug, on Thursday - may be the most important, even stunning official document yet to come out of this war. It puts the lie to the Bush administration's PR campaign that postwar Iraq is progressing nicely and that the media are exaggerating the setbacks. (If the media are exaggerating, this memo indicates, then so, too, is Secretary Rumsfeld.) It reads eerily like some internal mid-'60s document from The Pentagon Papers that spelled out how badly things were going in Vietnam (just as President Lyndon B. Johnson and his defense secretary, Robert McNamara, were publicly proclaiming tunnel light and victories). To use a phrase coined during LBJ's tenure to describe the ever-widening fissure between rhetoric and reality, Rumsfeld's memo marks the first unconcealable eruption of a "credibility gap" in the wartime presidency of George W. Bush.

Bush signs executive order claiming Iraq oil for himself (May 29, 2003)
(...) The executive order is cleverly worded to make it seem as though all Iraqi oil revenues are going into the Development Fund for Iraq. But that's not what it says. (a) and (b) are independent above. If any oil company goes in to pump Iraqi oil, no organization can sue to have the revenues go to a just cause. The executive order says that oil companies may pump Iraqi oil without fear of lawsuits. There will be no pesky 9-11 style lawsuits to worry about.

Bush Team Makes Federal Lands More Open to Oil, Gas Drilling (August 8, 2003),1,7251873.story
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Thursday directed government land managers to remove environmental and procedural obstacles that are slowing development of oil and gas resources in several areas in the West that have high potential for energy production. Oil industry representatives applauded the policy changes, which they say will streamline the bureaucracy involved in energy production on federal lands. But environmental groups accused the Bush administration of sacrificing environmental quality in its effort to boost energy production in government-managed areas.

Students Fight E-Vote Firm (October 21),1367,60927,00.html
Students Fight E-Vote Firm Internal Diebold memos hit the Web recently, revealing that the company knew about security flaws in voting systems sold to the states. Diebold has tried to remove the memos from the Web, but students are fighting back. -- A group of students at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania has launched an "electronic civil disobedience" campaign against voting machine maker Diebold Election Systems. The students are protesting efforts by Diebold to prevent them and other website owners from linking to some 15,000 internal company memos that reveal the company was aware of security flaws in its e-voting software for years but sold the faulty systems to states anyway. The memos were leaked to voting activists and journalists by a hacker who broke into an insecure Diebold FTP server in March. CLIP

Contribute to's "Defend Democracy" Campaign

The following is a letter by Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis written from "exile" in New Mexico. Below the letter is complete background information on the situation. -- August 18, 2003 -- Dear friends, I am writing to you from a hotel room in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I and 10 of my colleagues in the Texas Senate have been forced to reside for the past 20 days. If we return to our homes, families, friends, and constituents, the Governor of Texas will have us arrested. I know, it sounds more like a banana republic than the dignified democracy on which we have long prided ourselves. We are effectively exiled from the state due to our unalterable opposition to a Republican effort -- pushed by Tom Delay and Karl Rove, and led by Texas Governor Rick Perry -- that would rewrite the map of Texas Congressional districts in order to elect at least 5 more Republicans to Congress. You may not have heard much about the current breakdown in Texas politics. The Republican power play in California has obscured the Republican power play in Texas that has forced my colleagues and me to leave the state. CLIP - Check also

Satellites at risk from sun storm (October 25, 2003)
An electromagnetic storm originating on the sun could knock out communications satellites, mobile phone networks and electricity grids today, scientists warned last night. Electronic equipment is at risk from explosive flares ejected from a giant sunspot toward Earth, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. The interaction of the solar flare with Earth's magnetic field is likely to generate a bright display of the northern lights. NOAA added that there might be by an even more powerful storm next week. Zimbabwe's Woes Are Bringing Grief to Its Wildlife (Oct 25)
HWANGE NATIONAL PARK, Zimbabwe - Once this 5,700-square-mile expanse of wilderness, Zimbabwe's largest, was one of Africa's grandest showcases of wild animals. These days, it is exhibit A in the unfolding story of their destruction. On a recent steamy morning, perhaps 60 elephants staged a scrum at the Nyamandlovu watering hole here, jockeying frantically to get a drink of water - not from the watering hole, a porridge of mud and flopping, dying fish, but from a trickling pipe at the hole's edge. During Hwange's long, bone-dry winter, more than two dozen pumps supply almost all the water to thousands of animals. But Zimbabwe's government had neither enough fuel to run them nor spare parts to repair the many that were broken. The scene was but a small element in what Colin Gillies, a wildlife expert with a private group here, calls "an unholy slaughter" of one of southern Africa's most varied stocks of wildlife. It is the product of three years of economic collapse, corruption and decaying civil order in a nation where the government is encouraging squatters and political allies to seize commercial farms and game preserves. Hunting and tourism once pumped millions of dollars into Zimbabwe's economy each year, sustaining wildlife management programs on millions of acres of private scrubland too arid or rocky for commercial farming, but ideal for photographic safaris and big-game hunts. Zimbabwe's decision to confiscate most of that land from its white owners, and then to redistribute it to peasants and political supporters, has had an unexpected result: thousands of hungry families on land too poor to support crops have turned to poaching as their prime source of food and income. Private wildlife programs have been all but destroyed. CLIP

Spam messages may prove deadly to the e-mail (October 24 2003)
You've got spam. The massive rise in unsolicited junk e-mail messages is taking its toll on the online world, with 60 per cent of users saying spam has reduced their e-mail use "in a big way", according to research released this week by the Pew Internet & America Life Project, part of the Pew Research Center, a Washington DC think-tank. Deborah Fallows, author of the report, said data from a national survey suggest spam is "beginning to undermine the integrity of e-mail and to degrade the online experience". Pew estimates that well over 30bn e-mail messages bounce around the internet every day. "Users worry that the growing volume of spam is getting in the way of their ability to reliably send and receive e-mail," Ms Fallows said. "They complain that it uncontrollably clutters their inboxes and imposes uninvited, deceptive, and often disgustingly offensive messages." Users of e-mail are partly responsible for the ubiquity of spam. Some 7 per cent report that they have ordered a product or service offered in an unsolicited e-mail. Even so, 70 per cent of those surveyed said spam had made being online "unpleasant or annoying", while 80 per cent were bothered by the "deceptive or dishonest" content of spam. The most popular way of dealing with spam is to simply click "delete", the study said. "Despite their dismay, internet users keep the issue of spam in perspective. For them, spam takes its place next to life's other annoyances, like telemarketing calls."

Europe's bizarre harvest mirrors climate-change prediction (Aug 20)
Shifting harvests in Europe this year, triggered by extreme but local bouts of rain, heat and drought, eerily foreshadow predictions made last year that warn global warming will reshape European agriculture, New Scientist says. Statistics issued this month by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Brussels say crop yields have shrivelled across southern Europe just as they have soared in northern Europe.

AUGUST 19. I now have a number of credible reports from people within the area of the blackout. These reports indicate that car radios went out just prior to, or as, the blackout started. Also, I have reports of people in three different states---Ohio, Michigan, and New Jersey---hearing sounds like thunder about the time the blackout began. One person in Ohio discovered two interesting things just after the outage descended: a digital clock in the house which had a fairly new battery suddenly displayed a series of non-numerical symbols instead of the time; and the fuse box was too hot to touch. In light of these reports---and the failure of the mainstream press to take notice of them---we now have to inquire into the failure of many cell phones in the affected areas. (...) One witness in Toronto states that as she and many other people stood outside during the initial evening hours of the blackout, planes were heard flying overhead and the effects of chemical spraying were felt---stinging eyes, etc. The fact that electronic devices not connected to the power grid went down or behaved strangely points to an event that took place outside the grid and affected it. (...) However, all in all, the most compelling explanation for the blackout is a directed and intentional electromagnetic pulse originating from outside the power grid. There is no other way to describe such a pulse than as a weapon. CLIP Many more related articles at

Suspicious Blackouts: Who is Targeting Global Power Grids? (Oct 24)
In July 2002, President Bush signed National Security Presidential Directive 16 (PD-16), a secret plan for the United States to wage cyber-warfare against other countries. Under the directive, the Pentagon -which is under the control of neo-conservative zealots who make Dr. Strangelove seem relatively sane- is authorized to use electronic weaponry to bring down the electrical grids of enemy nations.

Bush's Yucca Mountain Nuclear Burial Scheme is Full of Leaks - Literally
The DOE's design for burying nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain would cause corrosion that would perforate the waste containers and allow leaks, an expert panel is preparing to advise the department," reports the Las Vegas Sun. This means that burying nuclear fuel rods - one of the most dangerous materials on Earth - at Yucca is NOT SAFE. But do Bush and his cronies in Congress and the DOE care? Even Republican John Ensign (NV) doubts it: "Every time a concern like this gets raised the Department of Energy ignores it. ... They just bury their head in the sand," Ensign said. "It seems no matter how credible arguments have been, they either ignore them or change the rules.

Bad Mileage: 98 tons of plants per gallon (Oct 27)
Study shows vast amounts of 'buried sunshine' needed to fuel society - A staggering 98 tons of prehistoric, buried plant material - that's 196,000 pounds - is required to produce each gallon of gasoline we burn in our cars, SUVs, trucks and other vehicles, according to a study conducted at the University of Utah. "Can you imagine loading 40 acres worth of wheat - stalks, roots and all - into the tank of your car or SUV every 20 miles?" asks ecologist Jeff Dukes, whose study will be published in the November issue of the journal Climatic Change. But that's how much ancient plant matter had to be buried millions of years ago and converted by pressure, heat and time into oil to produce one gallon of gas, Dukes concluded. Dukes also calculated that the amount of fossil fuel burned in a single year - 1997 was used in the study - totals 97 million billion pounds of carbon, which is equivalent to more than 400 times "all the plant matter that grows in the world in a year," including vast amounts of microscopic plant life in the oceans. "Every day, people are using the fossil fuel equivalent of all the plant matter that grows on land and in the oceans over the course of a whole year," he adds.

QUOTE: "Because that grand and beautiful country called America is pivotal in determining what happens all over the planet, its 2004 presidential election is of international concern. The three levels of involvement I have just delineated apply to all people in the world as pertaining to this election. Discernment of information and energy are without national boundaries or distance limitations, so a South African or Brazilian or Chinese or Egyptian has the same power of focusing intent as any USA citizen."

Dear Jean

Namaste and my gratitude for the wonderful work you have done to raise the awareness levels of many souls all over the globe. I am an avid reader of all your newsletters for sometime. I would like to remind you that the United States is one country on this planet among others, it is indeed powerful and this very power has absolutely corrupted its values. I would remind you that all great empires of history have vanished with time so also will this one. I do not speak with prejudice or hate, but as a citizen of India the largest democracy and secular nation on this planet. My experience is that ultimately evil will destroy itself.

Dear Jean,

Would you be so kind as to circulate this to your entire list.

I hope you have been well. As always, I appreciate getting your email bulletins. We are still yet so close, yet not there quite yet in funding the Global Interchange. Say a few prayers to us. It will help all lightworkers all over the world, regardless of whether they think of themselves as lightworkers or not.

Jean, a number of fairly influential spiritually-minded progressives have seen the New America Papers Summary book (its full-length 280 page book is in progress) and have been deeply impressed by the content, quality of writing, and visual presentation. I am sending you a bound final edition for distribution by mail. Expect it soon.

Pardon me for a bit more of “promotionalism” – but I do think it is one of the most revolutionary pieces produced in a long time – even if I did have a major part in developing it. It marries social action and spirituality and shows ways to unite broad numbers of people for the first time. “Discernment with Compassion” and “Future Present” are two expressions that am particularly intrigued with.

Meanwhile, the summary book is entirely online at our new Positive Future website

It has been optimized for printing, hence it is quite “dynamic” in a browser window.

An original and significant analysis of American values, beliefs, and typologies that offers startling insight into U.S. society.

A New Reason to Vote:

Eighty-four percent of American households not likely to vote share a common interest in supporting new leaders who have higher and more evolved moral and ethical values than they themselves. People who have not been likely to vote are expressly looking for leaders of a higher and more evolved caliber, rather than a simple reflection of "sameness." That nearly half of eligible voters did not vote in the 2000 presidential election, speaks volumes.

A New National Conversation:

Americans are seeking a new national conversation, direction, and actions elevating the "common denominator." Americans desire to establish new patterns for healing, learning, communication, organization, finance, and leadership. Our groundbreaking research shows that most Americans identify with much higher aspirations for themselves and the world than is communicated through many of our social institutions.

And a Higher Common Denominator:

Our highest common denominator represents a powerful attractor bridging those who are less engaged in society with those who are more engaged. These aspirations directly relate to achieving a more evolved and mature society and sustainable future. This sustainability is based on universal interconnectedness, personal and collective integrity, forgiveness and reconciliation, and ethical responsibility.

The essential message of The New America Papers is that Americans and most of humanity have the potential and capacity to develop new ways of being that transcend old patterns of fear, conflict, retribution, and domination.

(...) We believe there are people everywhere in leadership or positions of influence, as well as people from many walks of life who, given the opportunity, would rise to the occasion to be involved in positive change. We believe this to be visible on the horizon now.

Subject: Kucinich Supports Movement to Bring Troops Home
From: "David Swanson - Kucinich Campaign">

Yesterday, supporters of Congressman Dennis Kucinich's bid for the presidency participated in marches and rallies around the country, including in Washington D.C. and San Francisco, organized by United for Peace and Justice and intended to advance the cause of bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq. Busloads of Kucinich supporters made their way to D.C. and handed out flyers in a crowd containing many Kucinich signs, banners, and T-shirts.

Congressman Kucinich himself phoned in to WPFW, the radio station airing the DC event, and expressed his support for the cause on the air. Kucinich also wrote remarks which were read on stage at the DC event by Rev. Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou, the Kucinich campaign's National Director of Community Outreach and New Voter Development. The remarks follow:

"I wish I could have been with you today, as I have been with you in marches against this war over the past many months, including the powerful march in New York last February. I am campaigning for President, which required me today to speak out against this occupation at a forum with other candidates rather than with you where my heart is, rather than with you in Washington, D.C., a city that I intend to see become a STATE in the very near future. Today I spoke at an AFL-CIO forum in New Hampshire urging labor to get behind ending the occupation.

"It was a year ago February that I gave a speech titled "A Prayer for America" that flooded my office with Emails, letters, and phone calls asking me to run for President. In that speech I protested the Bush Administration's build-up to war, and I have continued to oppose that war unwaveringly and do so still today, because this war has been declared over but our soldiers continue to die, our occupation continues to destabilize the region, and our public resources continue to be drained by this fraudulent and unjust project.

"While I organized in communities with you against the war, I also organized in Congress. I led an effort that persuaded nearly two-thirds of the Democrats in the House to vote against the war. I also sued the President in an attempt to prevent him from going to war without a Congressional Declaration. And I led the effort to oppose the recent funding increase for this occupation to the tune of 87 billion dollars. That's more than all the states' deficits combined.

"Let me say it clearly: It is time to bring the troops home! It is time to get the UN in and the US out of Iraq! This is not a demand I make casually. I have developed a plan to make this happen and it can be found on my website at Kucinich dot US. We must go to the UN Security Council for a resolution that includes these three points:

"One) The UN must handle the collection and distribution of all oil revenues for the Iraqi people, with no privatization.

"Two) The UN must handle the awarding of all contracts - no more Halliburton sweetheart deals. No more war profiteering by Republican contributors and Bush Administration cronies.

"Third) The UN must work to create conditions for Iraqi self governance.

"It is time for the United States to rejoin the world community in the interests of international security. I am running for President to completely change the direction of US foreign and domestic policy. I plan to cut the bloated Pentagon budget by 15 percent and use the money for universal pre-school. I plan to establish a cabinet-level Department of Peace to make nonviolence an organizing principle in our foreign and domestic affairs.

"If those of you who share these goals join this campaign, help us organize door-to-door and over the phone lines, we will win the Democratic nomination and give the American people a real choice in next year's election, a reason to vote, an opportunity to make this country a leader in peace, not war. And it will be the war profiteers who have to gather in a small corner of this great space and hold a protest, because the White House will be closed to them. Thanks you."

Help make our Children Safe! Have your say in an Australian document to be distributed at the City of Montessori’s 4th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World on article 51(c) of the Constitution of India.

Dear World Peace Workers,

I am sure you agree that the 2 billion children of our world deserve proper education and to live in a nuclear-free world with a safe, healthy ecology, free of war and terror.

These are the goals of the City of Montessori School. Founded by Mr Jagdish Gandhi and Mrs Bharti Gandhi in 1959 with just five students, CMS now has 27,000 students and as shown in the Guinness Book of World Records, is the largest school in the world. It is the only school to receive the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education in 2002 and the only school to organise/host fifteen international events for children annually. And it is the organiser for the International Conferences of Chief Justices of the World.

Mr Gandhi has recognised World Peace 2000 “as an Esteemed Peace Organisation and Richard Fletcher, its founder, as a well known supporter of peace”. For these reasons Mr Gandhi extended Richard an invitation to the 4th International Conferences of Chief Justices of the World at Lucknow, India.

Richard is therefore extending an invitation to be part of a select number of educational organisations and members of the general public whose input will be chosen by World Peace 2000 to provide ideas on legislation, education and peace which will be included in World Peace 2000’s document representation.

The document will highlight the world’s views, giving particular importance to Australian organisations aiming at peace education and giving legal expertise about the future educational needs for all the children of the world to live in a free world with a safe, healthy ecology, free of war and terror.

1,167 Chief Justices of the world attended the last International Conference and our document will be distributed to participating justices at India’s 4TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF CHIEF JUSTICES OF THE WORLD 12–14 December 2003.

Contributions towards covering expenses of $10,000 (ten thousand dollars) will be appreciated; and in order to prepare, process and print the Australian representative document in time, all entries must be brief. Submission acceptances close on 15 November 2003.

My 10 Days in Japan

with Yumi Kikuchi of the Global Peace Campaign

By Frank Dorrel

I flew to Tokyo on October 11th at the invitation of Yumi Kikuchi and her husband Gen Morita, founders of the Global Peace Campaign.

The next day, we attended Peace Renaissance held at Waseda University in Tokyo, where about 500 young people participated. It was a two day event with many workshops and talks promoting peace and awareness. My talk and film showing attracted about 70 people. Yumi translated.

After this talk, we went to an International Peace panel discussion at the University Hall. Yumi was on the panel with 4 other people from the USA, Switzerland, Korea and Japan. About 400 people attended. It was a quite interesting discussion. Towards the end of the panel, I was invited to give a short talk.

The next day on Oct. 13, we went to the Foreign Correspondent Club of Japan. Edwin Karmiol from Belgium, director of the FCCJ film committee showed my video "What I've Learned About U.S. Foreign Policy" to a crowd of about 40 people, including 3 Americans. Everyone found the video very interesting, to say the least.

There was one more event that evening at the BEGOOD CAFE, which is a community cafe event, held monthly. Both Yumi and I spoke. They showed the Addicted To War preview, to 300, mostly young people, who loved it.

We went back to Kamogawa that night, where Gen, Yumi, and their children, Ana and Mana live. It is a 2-hour bus ride from Tokyo to get to Kamogawa, and from the bus station, it is another 20 minutes drive. They live in the mountains in a 200 year old house, far away from the city, where they grow most all of the food they eat.

Early the next morning on Oct 14th, I was interviewed by John Cabira of J-Wave Radio, a Spanish man whose program Good Morning Tokyo is very popular.

On Oct. 15th we went back to Tokyo where I had a 2 1/2 hour interview with Mr. Naoto Amaki, the former Japanese Ambassador to Lebanon, who was fired after 35 years of service to his country, for speaking out against war in Iraq. It was an honor and a privilege speaking with this man. This interview was translated by Yumi and will be in this week's SPA Magazine, which has a circulation of about 300,000.

After that, we went to Japan Video News for interview with Mr. Jimbo, who is a long time friend of Yumi's from her college days. I had a one hour interview with him. It can be seen on his web site:

On Oct 16, I had two more interviews with newspaper reporters. One was the Tokyo Shinbun with a 4 million circulation and other was Akahata, the communist party's paper, with a circulation of 400,000. Both reporters came all the way from Tokyo to interview me at Yumi and Gen's mountain hideaway.

On Oct. 17, Yumi had to go to Hokkaido to give 3 talks in 3 different places. I went to give a press conference in Tokyo, where I was accompanied by Mika Tsutsumi, who was to be my interpreter for the next two days. This event was put on by a peace group called Asian Spark. This press conference was held in Shibuya, a young people's hot spot in Tokyo. I was interviewed by CNN and by a reporter from The Japan Times, which is an English newspaper in Japan. This was the same day that George Bush came to Japan to convince the Japanese people to support the United States in Iraq. The next day a very positive article about my visit to Japan appeared in the Japan Times on page two of the front section. The main message of my trip was to tell the people not to support their government in sending Japanese troops to Iraq and not to give 1 1/2 billion dollars to the U.S. for the reconstruction.

The next day on Oct. 18th, Mika and I flew to Sakata where I gave a speech and showed the video again to over 100 people. This event was put on by Mr. Tanaka Takahiro, who works for the city government of Sakata. This was one of the best events of the trip, as the people were very interested in what I had to say and in viewing 3 segments of my video. Afterwards, Mika and I went to a special dinner with the organizers, all who are activists in their own right. The city of Sakata was very magical. Mika has written a novel about 9-11 called The Last Trumpet. She was in New York on 9-11 and saw one of the planes fly into the World Trade Tower.

The next day we flew back to Tokyo and met Gen, who took me to Shibuya for another video showing to about 100, mostly young people, organized by Asian Spark.

Everywhere we went we sold lots of copies of the Japanese edition of Addicted To War, which Yumi helped to translate and now has been distributed to over 70,000 people. Yumi and Gen are now working on putting Japanese subtitles on my video and showing it to many thousands of people in their country.

At many of these events I took the opportunity to apologize to the Japanese people for what the United States did to them at the end of World War II, by dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I told them how George Bush says he sent our military into Iraq because they might have had weapons of mass destruction. But the United States has been the only country ever to drop atomic bombs on another country. What hypocrisy! That was another reason for my trip, to expose the Japanese people to the BIG LIE we have been living here in the United States.

Yumi, Gen, Ana and Mana took me to the airport on October 20th and we said goodbye. The 10 days were a quite an exciting adventure. I was really inspired and touched by meeting so many beautiful and caring people in Japan.

Much heartfelt thanks to Yumi and Gen for bringing me to Japan. They will be back in the U.S. early next year as they are supporting Rep. Dennis Kucinich for president. Yumi has written a book about Dennis in Japanese and many people are buying it.

Kucinich's Record Shows He's an Antidote to Bush

by Midge Miller

As our country faces crises on every front, I have been so concerned about the reckless policies of President Bush and his managers that I felt the most important thing was just to find a presidential candidate who could defeat them. There is so much at stake in this election, we need to make regime change in our own country our first priority.

The media and the establishment are beginning to share my concern that this administration's policies are endangering our economy, alienating our allies and making this a more dangerous world.

Knowing that our chances to win are improved, it is imperative that the Democrats select the presidential candidate who would be best able to solve our many problems at home and abroad.

Many people measure candidates by their campaign war chests, their oratory or their political allies. In the long run, there are three important things we as voters need to know about a candidate. Are their policies right for the country? Do they have the integrity to really pursue those policies, if elected? Are their policies consistent with what they have been doing?

After watching and reading about the Democratic candidates for president, I find that Congressman Dennis Kucinich has the best grasp of the situation we are facing as a nation. For almost every issue I care about, Kucinich has a well-thought-out policy that is consistent with the courageous work he has been doing for years as co-chairman of the Progressive Caucus in Congress.

The imperialistic ambitions of this administration are destroying the best efforts of both parties and most countries for over half a century to contain the nuclear threat, promote treaties and build international institutions to help the world live in peace. It is not enough just to be against the Iraq war now that we know Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction. Kucinich rejects Bush's aggressive pursuit of military dominance. He will move us once again to be a trusted partner in the family of nations. Kucinich has long promoted a Department of Peace and led 125 of his congressional colleagues to vote against the Iraq war.

Too many Americans are in denial about the dangers inherent in Bush's plan to build a national missile defense boondoggle and develop new and usable nuclear weapons. Kucinich led 31 congressional colleagues in suing the president to prevent the abrogation of the ABM treaty.

Kucinich knows that it will be impossible to have the resources to provide health care, quality education, environmental protection and still meet the many needs of our country unless we reduce the military budget and rescind the tax cuts for the wealthy.

The safety net that has protected senior citizens, the unemployed, the disabled and the sick is being shredded. Bush's efforts to privatize Social Security and to put prescription drugs under the control of HMOs are only two of his efforts to unravel our safety net.

The single-payer health care plan proposed by Kucinich is by far the least expensive and the most inclusive.

The neoconservatives promote policies that outsource production overseas and create high unemployment at home in order to secure cheap labor. They seek to maximize profits for the rich at the expense of the worker and the environment. Kucinich would work to repeal the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization and replace them with agreements that protect our environment and American workers. He will work for a full-employment economy.

Under cover of the Patriot Act, John Ashcroft has been rapidly eroding our constitutionally protected liberties. Kucinich would roll back these intrusions on our freedoms.

Whether it is health care, the environment, the economy, international relations or war and peace, Kucinich will govern on behalf of the people, not the special interests.

Trust between the governed and those who govern is essential to a well-functioning democracy. The Bush administration has not only lost the respect of much of the world, but he has also lost the trust of millions of Americans. Kucinich has remained true to his convictions and spoken out and organized opposition at a time when many of his colleagues were hesitant to speak up.

The primary season is the time to select the best possible candidate. I welcome the opportunity to support Dennis Kucinich and to do what I can to help him become our next president. I urge your readers to study the candidates and issues carefully. Visit the Web site I am sure that many will agree that Kucinich has the record, the determination and the vision to guide us.

Most Democrats and Greens, as well as many disillusioned Republicans, will agree that defeating Bush is our top priority. After the convention, we know we must rally around the winning Democrat for the general election.

Midge Miller of Madison is a former Wisconsin state legislator who played a critical role in organizing the insurgent anti-war presidential campaign of former U.S. Sen. Eugene McCarthy in 1968. She has been active in every presidential campaign since then.

"It takes wisdom to have Great Power and make gentle its presence in the world."

Canadians in Kabul are not peacekeeepers

By ERIC MARGOLIS -- Contributing Foreign Editor

The Toronto Sun

August 17, 2003

ZURICH -- Two years ago, the idea of sending Canadian troops to remote Afghanistan would have seemed as laughable as dispatching the Swiss Army to Bolivia. Yet this is exactly what happened, thanks to the 9/11 attacks and U.S. President George Bush's ham-handed war on terrorism.

Some 1,900 Canadian troops are joining the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (more Orwellian Pentagonspeak) in Afghanistan, the alliance's first deployment outside Europe, and a mission recalling the relief of besieged Beijing by European and Japanese troops during China's 1901 Boxer Rebellion.

These ISAF soldiers are called "peacekeepers" by uninformed media; their mission is hailed as a humanitarian operation to bring "stability" to war-ravaged Afghanistan.

We should understand these soldiers are not true peacekeepers, like Canadian troops in Cyprus, but rather auxiliaries of U.S. occupation forces in Afghanistan whose strategic mission is to secure control of Central Asian oil.

The Canadians and other NATO troops garrisoning Kabul are duplicating the role of U.S. Marines sent to Beirut in 1982. Washington billed the Marines as "peacekeepers" in Lebanon's bloody civil war. In reality, the Marines were sent to prop up the Israeli-dominated Christian Phalangist regime in its war against Syrian-backed Muslim groups. When 240 Marines were killed by a truck bomb, Americans were outraged their "peacekeepers" had become a target. Americans -- and the Marines -- simply did not understand they had been dropped in the middle of a civil war as full-fledged combatants.

NATO troops are in Kabul not because the alliance wanted to get involved in Afghanistan's 24-year-old conflict, but because Washington browbeat Canada and its European allies into helping share the burden of garrisoning a conquered nation.

Better, figured NATO governments, to placate Washington by sending troops to lower threat Afghanistan than to dangerous Iraq. Just as the Soviet Union compelled its Warsaw Pact alliance during the 1980s to send troops to Angola, so the U.S. has forced its reluctant allies into Afghanistan.

The sole mission of NATO's Kabul garrison is propping up the U.S.-installed Afghan regime of Mohammed Karzai, an amiable but powerless figurehead and an old Central Intelligence Agency asset. However, real power in Kabul is held by the Northern Alliance, which is armed, financed and largely directed by the Russian security services.

The Northern Alliance's three main components are Panjshiris of the late Ahmad Shah Massoud, a covert Soviet ally during the 1980s war, the old Afghan Communist party, now led by former secret police general Mohammed Fahim, and the Uzbek militia of war criminal, Gen. Rashid Dostam.

South of Kabul, the nation is a patchwork of local tribal warlords, whom the U.S. heavily bribes to combat the Taliban, al-Qaida and other nationalist forces.

Some 9,000 U.S. troops are stuck in a low-grade guerrilla war in Afghanistan costing $500 million US monthly. The security situation in Afghanistan now ironically resembles late 1982: a Soviet-installed puppet regime in Kabul, propped up by the Red Army and combat-shy Afghan government troops, with scattered but growing armed resistance to the foreign occupation.

Canadians will now join what Afghanistan's own king calls this "stupid and useless war."

Not only are the U.S. and its allies mired in an intensifying guerrilla war in a chaotic nation, they now find themselves in league with world-class drug dealers.

Afghanistan was the world's leading grower and exporter of opium, the base for morphine and heroin. When the Taliban regime drove the Afghan Communists from power in 1996, they vowed to eradicate opium, though it was the dirt-poor nation's only cash crop. By 2001, according to UN drug agencies, the Taliban had totally eradicated opium production in areas it controlled. The only production of opium during the Taliban era was done by its bitter foe, the Northern Alliance. The Bush administration was giving millions in anti-drug aid to the Taliban until four months before the 9/11 attacks.

After 9/11, the Taliban was demonized by the Bush administration and U.S. media for refusing to hand over Osama bin Laden without first seeing evidence of his guilt. The U.S. invasion followed, the Taliban was overthrown and retreated into the mountains. When the Northern Alliance seized power in Kabul with help from Russia and the U.S., it revived opium growing and soon began producing morphine and refined heroin, processes formerly performed in Pakistan.

Major heroin producer

Today, Afghanistan, a U.S. protectorate, is again the leading producer of heroin, accounting for 4,000 tons annually, 75% of total world production.

The head of Russia's anti-drug agency calls the situation in Afghanistan "catastrophic." Yet it is the Northern Alliance-run regime, and its U.S., Russian and NATO supporters, who are responsible for this drug epidemic.

After Indochina and Central America, the U.S. once again finds itself in bed with major drug dealers. The Bush administration has reportedly ordered agents from its own Drug Enforcement Agency in Pakistan to turn a blind eye to the narcotics dealing of its Northern Alliance allies.

Well-meaning but ill-informed Canadians now join the endless Afghan war as part of the imperial garrison in Kabul. By helping protect Karzai and the Northern Alliance, Canada, like the U.S., has become an unwitting, but very real, accessory to the international heroin trade, and the partner of a criminal regime.

US Harpoon missiles armed with nuclear warheads are now aimed by Israeli's fleet of Dolphin-class submarines against Iran's nuclear facilities. Following September's exclusive report in American Free Press about Israel's submarine nuclear attack capability, over 100 Harpoon cruise missiles have been secretly flown to the remote island of Diego Garcia, a joint UK-US base in the Indian Ocean.

The three Israeli submarines which arrived at the base early this month were each loaded with 24 Harpoon missiles. They then set sail for the Gulf of Oman - bringing Iran's nuclear facilities all within range of their submarines‚ multi-payloads. The decision to launch them is entirely in the hands of Israel's prime minister, Ariel Sharon. Just as he gave Washington only a short warning he was going to attack an alleged terrorist camp deep inside Syria, Sharon has made it clear to Washington that the same rule of engagement will apply if it comes to launching the Harpoon missiles.

Sharon made his position clear in a telephone call to President Bush the day after the attack on Syria. According to one Israeli source, Bush said he "just wanted to be kept informed". Credible intelligence sources say the reality is that Sharon believes he would have the support of Bush if he did launch an attack.

But an indication of the deepening concern that some members of the Bush Administration now feel, is that national security advisor Condoleezza Rice last weekend allowed one of her senior aides to confirm our September report to the Los Angeles Times and London's Guardian newspaper.

Both drew heavily on the original American Free Press story. The senior Pentagon and State department sources for our first story, about Israel's Dolphin class submarines, have told us exclusively that, in the words of one high-level Pentagon source, "matters have now advanced considerably and for the first time Rice is sounding alarm bells in the Oval Office".

Rice's decision to leak is also the first clear indication of her concerns over Israel - as well as her own direct challenge to the authority of Secretary of Defence, Donald Rumsfeld.

She is now engaged in an internal power struggle with Rumsfeld - and has chosen to use what she sees as his failure in the Middle East to harness Sharon's behaviour as her launch pad to have the Secretary of State ousted. "Rice has a long-term strategy to become Secretary of State. While Rumsfeld is no supporter of Powell, he knows that having Rice in charge of State would give her more power than she even has now. And there is also the ultimate ambition for Condi, to be Bush's running mate, if not in this election, then in the one afterwards. Her own inner circle say that she would relish a face-off with Hillary Clinton in 2008. If Condi became vice-President, then she is but a step away from becoming the first Black woman in the White House. That is what is driving her," said a senior Washington analyst.

Meantime, Rice's concerns have deepened following Sharon's stark warning last Sunday that "states harbouring terrorists are legitimate targets". Aides in Tel Aviv have confirmed to American Free Press that "Iran and Syria are top of that list - with Iran in the top spot".

The revelation comes at a time of rapidly escalating tensions in the region. Israel's senior Foreign Ministry spokesman, Gideon Meir, insisted "any country that harbours a threat to Israel is a legitimate target for us out of self-defence". Today, American Free Press can reveal, again for the first time, that a team of US computer specialists flew to Diego Garcia to fit the latest version of the software known as "over the horizon". This would allow a Harpoon missile to hit any of Iran's nuclear establishments with pin-point accuracy.

Originally developed by Inslaw, the Washington based specialist computer software company, the "over the horizon" capability has been enhanced to handle the sophisticated electronics of the Harpoon missiles.

In the meantime, Sharon has ordered Mossad to put together a specialist team to infiltrate Iran. Their mission is to snatch some of the scientists working in the country's nuclear facilities at Natanz, Arak and Saghand.

U.S. gleans facts on Iran from debatable source (October 26)
Nuclear arms allegations derived in part from rebel group's data - Tehran -- Both Iran and Iraq were accused by the United States of developing banned weapons, and in both cases much of the intelligence came from exile groups whose credibility has been questioned. Now, some fear that despite the deal struck between Iran and European foreign ministers last week to allow inspections of nuclear sites, the United States may be proceeding down a warpath toward Iran, as it did with Iraq, based in part on faulty intelligence peddled by politically ambitious exiles.

Can Iran's Pursuit of Nuclear Technology Be Thwarted By Air Strikes?
Erich Marquardt writes for PINR: "As Iran continues its development of nuclear technology, powerful rival states such as the United States and Israel have publicly considered the viability of launching an air strike against Iran's nuclear facilities should Tehran come closer to developing the ability to create nuclear weapons. Israel, for example, has a nuclear monopoly in the Middle East and has shown its willingness to prevent other Middle Eastern states from acquiring nuclear arms. In 1981, when France was assisting Iraq in its quest for nuclear technology, Tel Aviv launched an air strike on Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor. The attack accomplished its primary objective of putting a dent in Baghdad's nuclear research program. Would a similar attack on Iran's nuclear facilities yield similar results?"

Syria threatens to attack Golan settlers if Israel strikes again (Oct 26)
Syria has threatened to attack Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights if Tel Aviv launches another assault on its territory. In a move that will raise tension after Israel struck a suspected terrorist training camp near Damascus earlier this month, Farouk Sharaa, Syria's foreign minister, warned that further "aggression" would prompt Syria to use "other cards". Mr Sharaa's threat, in an interview with The Telegraph, raises - for the first time since the Israeli raid - the prospect of Syria attacking the area seized from it by Israel in 1967.

Rockets, Napalm, Torpedoes & Lies
Israel's Attack on the Liberty, Revisited - In early June of 1967, at the onset of the Six Day War, the Pentagon sent the USS Liberty from Spain into international waters off the coast of Gaza to monitor the progress of Israel's attack on the Arab states. The Liberty was a lightly armed surveillance ship. Only hours after the Liberty arrived it was spotted by the Israeli military. The IDF sent out reconnaissance planes to identify the ship. They made eight trips over a period of three hours. The Liberty was flying a large US flag and was easily recognizable as an American vessel. A few hours later more planes came. These were Israeli Mirage III fighters, armed with rockets and machine guns. As off-duty officers sunbathed on the deck, the fighters opened fire on the defenseless ship with rockets and machine guns. A few minutes later a second wave of planes streaked overhead, French-built Mystere jets, which not only pelted the ship with gunfire but also with napalm bomblets, coating the deck with the flaming jelly. By now, the Liberty was on fire and dozens were wounded and killed, excluding several of the ship's top officers. (...) Finally, 16 hours after the attack two US destroyers reached the Liberty. By that time, 34 US sailors were dead and 174 injured, many seriously. As the wounded were being evacuated, an officer with the Office of Naval Intelligence instructed the men not to talk about their ordeal with the press. The following morning Israel launched a surprise invasion of Syria, breaching the new cease-fire agreement and seizing control of the Golan Heights. Within three weeks, the Navy put out a 700-page report, exonerating the Israelis, claiming the attack had been accidental and that the Israelis had pulled back as soon as they realized their mistake. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara suggested the whole affair should be forgotten. "These errors do occur," McNamara concluded. In Assault on the Liberty, a harrowing first-hand account by James Ennes Jr., McNamara's version of events is proven to be as big a sham as his concurrent lies about Vietnam. (...) It has also been suggested that Dayan ordered the attack on the Liberty with the intent of pinning the blame on the Egyptians and thus swinging public and political opinion in the United States solidly behind the Israelis. Of course, for this plan to work, the Liberty had to be destroyed and its crew killed. There's another factor. The Liberty was positioned just off the coast from the town of El Arish. In fact, Ennes and others had used town's mosque tower to fix the location of the ship along the otherwise featureless desert shoreline. The IDF had seized El Arish and had used the airport there as a prisoner of war camp. On the very day the Liberty was attacked, the IDF was in the process of executing as many as 1,000 Palestinian and Egyptian POWs, a war crime that they surely wanted to conceal from prying eyes. According to Gabriel Bron, now an Israeli reporter, who witnessed part of the massacre as a soldier: "The Egyptian prisoners of war were ordered to dig pits and then army police shot them to death." The bigger question is why the US government would participate so enthusiastically in the cover-up of a war crime against its own sailors. CLIP

Makow - The Real Cause of 'Anti Semitism' - (Oct 26)
Jewish Elite Is Part Of The Governing Class - (...) "The state of Israel now fulfills towards the oppressed peasants of many countries, not only in the Middle East, but far beyond it, a role not unlike the Jews of pre-1795 Poland: that of a bailiff to the imperial oppressor. " He refers to Israel's role as a linchpin in the imperial system. It helps keep neighboring Arab regimes in power (11) and arms Third World dictators. He wonders why religious Jews are major participants in the arms trade and rabbis are silent. Shahak believes the Jewish people need to overcome the "tyranny" of their religion. Only an "unrelenting critique" of the past will achieve a "genuine revolution." (...) The New World Order is a revival of feudalism. The rich rule as kings and humanity is en-serfed. It is happening before our eyes. Religion, art and education are debased. Civil rights are taken away. Men are emasculated and families destroyed. Jobs and technology are shipped abroad. The Jewish moral mission? How about "Thou Shall Not Steal" and "Thou Shall Not Kill?" Zionists have stolen the homes and land where Arabs lived for more than 50 generations. Israelis must withdraw to the 1967 boundaries, and make restitution. I am accused of being "a self hating Jew." I believe Jews like myself, Israel Shahak and many others represent the true Jewish spirit: absolute truth, justice and love. (I also find this spirit in Christianity and Islam.) We cannot change the truth just because we don't like it. The real cause of anti Semitism is found in the Jewish religion and in the role of the Jewish elite, their lackeys and dupes.

Rafah, a buffer zone of rubble where families have to live on a football field (Oct 27)
Palestinians whose homes have been demolished by the Israeli army in Rafah's refugee camps are now living packed into dangerously cramped and unhygienic conditions in the changing rooms of a football stadium. Up to 45 people are in one small room, while others are in rooms that open on to filthy, mosquito-ridden lavatories. Still others are living in the ruins of their homes, sheltering under four floors of fallen concrete that could collapse farther at any moment. >From the extent of the destruction, it has become clear that the demolitions, which began two weeks ago, are not just aimed at finding tunnels used by Palestinian militants to smuggle weapons, as the Israeli army claims. The intent is also to clear a broad swath of land adjacent to the Egyptian border, which runs next to Rafah, and create a de facto buffer zone to make the building of tunnels far harder. The destruction in Rafah, the only Palestinian city close to an international border, is extraordinary. Entire streets have been bulldozed. The road still passes up the middle, but on either side are just mounds of rubble where houses used to be. In other places, a few useless walls have been left standing. In the first raid alone, 150 homes were demolished and more than 1,500 people left homeless, said the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa. And the destruction did not end there. The Israeli army has made fresh incursions, demolishing more homes in other parts of the refugee camps around Rafah. The number left homeless is now believed to be more than 2,000.

Death Of A Town (October 27),2763,1071683,00.html
The moment al-Brazil plunged into darkness, Amjad Alweda knew what was coming. He grabbed his wife and three young children and bundled them down a pitch-black stairwell to a room at the back of their small block of flats. And then he stopped and listened. The sound of the tanks echoes along the streets around here so it seems they are coming from every direction at once and you never know which way to run," says the 32-year-old Palestinian man. Minutes later an engine roared and tons of steel - he didn't wait to discover whether it was a tank or a bulldozer - came crashing into the front of Alweda's computer shop. He squeezed his children through a back window and told them to run as the clanking monster tore at his livelihood. "The soldiers were calling over the megaphones for everybody to leave their houses but there was no chance for people to get out before they started shooting from the tanks. It was completely dark and there were bullets flying around," he says. "Usually, we try and stay in the house when the fighting starts but we knew the army had been everywhere else so it must be our turn." For two weeks now, the Israeli army has been grinding its way through Rafah refugee camp in the southern tip of the Gaza strip. "Operation Root Canal" is ostensibly aimed at destroying some of the dozens of tunnels the military says are used for smuggling weapons under the border with Egypt. As about 65 tanks, armoured vehicles and mammoth armour-plated bulldozers rolled into Rafah, the Israeli army said it had intelligence that surface-to-air missiles were being hauled through the tunnels. But there was no sign of them as dozens of Palestinians attempted to exact some kind of price for the attack with pistols, AK-47s and homemade hand grenades. By the time the Israelis withdrew to the fringes of the camp where the tanks and bulldozers are perpetually at work, 18 Palestinians were dead, including three children under 15 years old, and more than 120 were wounded.

Global Eye -- Thieves Like Us

By Chris Floyd

Oct. 24, 2003

When they asked the outlaw Willie Sutton why he robbed banks, he put it to them straight: "That's where the money is."

It is of course physically -- not to mention politically -- impossible for the corrupt cadres of the Bush Regime to give a straight answer to anything, but if they could be forced to cough up the truth behind the conquest of Iraq, their reply would be identical to Sutton's. For although the cadres -- and the media commentariat -- have thrown up a dust storm of grandiose moral, strategic and ideological "reasons" for the war, each passing week brings new proof that the whole murderous farrago boils down to one thing: loot. "Follow the money" -- Deep Throat's abiding Suttonian wisdom -- is definitely the key to penetrating the grubby mysteries of the Bushist cargo cult.

Let's begin by following the money from the mounting pile of dead bodies in Iraq to the silk lining of Dick Cheney's trouser pockets. This month the mainstream American press woke up to the long-established fact that Cheney is still receiving oodles of boodle in "deferred compensation" from his old firm, Halliburton, which just happens to be the biggest gorger at the Iraqi trough. These "revelations" forced the grim-visaged veep into a furious spin cycle: the terms of the deal were set before he took office, he'll give all the money to charity, his probity is irreproachable, blah blah blah -- the usual soft-soap, swallowed whole, as usual, by the media.

So bold was his defense that last week Bushist minions called on critics to issue a formal apology to the poor maligned unelected multimillionaire war profiteer (and former business partner of Saddam Hussein). But even granting the ludicrous assumption that Cheney was actually telling the truth about this particular arrangement -- which only involves chump change of a few hundred thousand dollars, after all -- the fact is that Halliburton is using a back door to fill its former chief's coffers with millions in blood money pumped directly from the corpses of American soldiers and Iraqi civilians.

This profitable arrangement was found hiding in plain sight last week by investigator Maggie Burns of the Progressive Populist. While the media mandarins were gulping soap, Burns committed the increasingly rare act of journalism by checking out Cheney's financial disclosure forms. These show that Cheney has a minimum of $18 million invested in The Vanguard Group, a leading mutual fund. (Given the deliberately vague, vast ranges of the "disclosure" forms, this nest-egg could be as high as $87 million. We mere mortals are not meant to know).

Vanguard, as it happens, is the 10th-largest shareholder in -- oh, you guessed already! -- Halliburton. The fund owns 7.6 million shares in the firm, worth about $176 million. Thus any government contract that swells Halliburton's bottom line does indeed pour war profits straight into Cheney's bulging bank accounts. No amount of soap can wash away that fact. Meanwhile, five of the other top 10 shareholders in Halliburton have big bucks parked with our old friends The Carlyle Group, where George Bush Sr. hangs out his shingle as a pricey corporate shill (and former bin Laden business partner). So Bush family coffers are definitely not forgotten when Halliburton goes to war.

But do let's be fair. After taking a bit of mild heat for larding Halliburton, Bechtel and other Bush-blessed firms with billion-dollar no-bid contracts, the Regime announced it was "opening up" competition for war pork. The new rules give potential contractors all of three days -- or even sometimes as much as seven whole days! -- to put together bids for major projects totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, The New York Times reports.

Oddly enough, most companies not already on the ground in Iraq are finding it difficult to meet these luxurious deadlines. "Oh, your company can't come up with specs for rebuilding the entire national highway infrastructure of Iraq in just three days? Too bad; guess we'll have to give it to Bechtel then. Here ya go, Bechs -- and by the way, thanks for that campaign check, pal! See ya at the ranch this weekend!"

Now this system of conquistador cronyism is going global. In a desperate bid to get some outside help in cleaning up the ungodly, bloodsoaked mess they've made, the Bushists struck a UN deal last week that will allow foreign countries who contribute to the pillaging -- sorry, the reconstruction -- of Iraq to funnel the cash to their own politically favored firms, The Guardian reports. Naturally, the Bushist occupation junta will "coordinate" the gobbling at this new trough, making sure the White House Vanguardians get their cut. At last, a form of internationalism that Bush can embrace!

But the sweetheart deals get sweeter yet for Homeland gobblers like Halliburton. First, most of the insider pork is being doled out in "cost-plus" contracts, with a company's profits tied to a project's "expenses." The more costs they ring up, the greater the profit: it's a green light for overruns, and a license to loot the public treasury.

But that's not all: The profits from these scams are being kept secret -- not only from those habitual saps, the American people, but also from the constitutionally mandated oversight of Congress, the Seattle Times reports.

Secret deals with pals and patrons, secret profits that can't be traced, mutual funds to launder the money -- and plenty of cannon fodder to do the wetwork and take the blowback: Bush has turned America into a den of thieves.
