I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT A SIMILAR IDEA FOR SOME TIME AND BELIEVE NOW IS THE TIME TO INSTITUE A GLOBAL BOYCOTT OF ISRAELI GOODS MUCH THE SAME WAY A GLOBAL ANTI-APARTHEID BOYCOTT WAS ESTABLISHED TO COERCE THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT TO DISMANTLE APARTHEID. THE REGIME OF TERROR, HUMILIATION AND REPRESSION VISITED UPON THE PALESTINIANS WHILE JEWS ENJOYS A POSH LIFE ON THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST BEARS MANY SIMILARITIES AND MUST COME TO AN END. PLEASE CIRCULATE AT LARGE.

Subject: Israeli Citizens and Other Jews Initiate Appeal to Boycott Israeli Goods
Date: Wed, 2 May 2001
I have joined in the appeal to boycott Israeli goods. The appeal was initiated by Israeli citizens and other Jews. Anyone can join by signing at the "Matzpun" website http://www.matzpun.com (matzpun =conscience in Hebrew).
I received the request, and text of the appeal below, from Robert Rodvik (email@example.com).
The authors of this appeal are Israeli citizens and Jews of other nationalities whose families have been victims of racism and genocide in past generations, and who feel they cannot remain silent.
After six months of relentless military oppression of Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied territories, the government of Israel has made daily life even more intolerable for the Palestinians by imposing a physical siege on their villages and towns. This siege has brought upon the Palestinians a complete cessation of "normal" life. For the majority of them there is no going to work, no shopping for food and other necessities, no medical services, and in many cases no water or electricity.
In 1948 the state of Israel dispossessed the Palestinians, evicted hundreds of thousands of them from their homes into refugee camps and did not allow them to return when the war ended. The same state is now preventing the victims of 1948 from having even the most basic services in their refugee camps and remaining villages and towns.
The inhumane oppressor hopes that starving will help force the Palestinians to surrender, without having any "negative public opinion problems" that live ammunition may have had in Western media. Indeed, public opinion in the West has largely relaxed any protest against the Israeli government's policies of killing civilians -- men, women and children-- since much of the killing is now being done away from the TV cameras. Human rights violations by the Palestinian Authority have also helped Israel to falsely portray itself again as the righteous victim.
We call on the world community to organize and boycott Israeli industrial and agricultural exports and goods, as well as leisure tourism, in the hope that it will have the same positive result that the boycott of South Africa had on Apartheid.
This boycott should remain in force as long as Israel controls any part of the territories it occupied in 1967. Those who squash the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinians must be made to feel the consequences of their own bitter medicine.
We urge every recipient of this appeal, irrespective of origin and nationality, to:
1. Start practicing the boycott on a personal level immediately, and make sure that the steps taken are known in the community (for example: tell your shopkeeper why you will not buy Israeli products; avoid leisure travel to Israel).
2. Add your name to the appeal, circulate it to your friends, and do whatever you can to have it endorsed by groups concerned about human rights.
3. Organize activities to put pressure on your government to cut economic and commercial ties with Israel and to rescind preferential economic treaties with Israel.

Subject: Comments from a Grassroots level on the Arab/Israeli problem

Dear Friend Jean,
You might remember that I sent you the email address of Hagit in Israel one of the light workers there who has great respect for her Palestinian counterparts on the other side of the border.
Yesterday I received this email from her and thought it wise to share it with you in view of the report you sent this week, which i received today. I believe it will help us see that there are many of like minded/ consciousness people who are doing their utmost "out in the front line" and if we can help them in any way, please let us do so.
From Hagit email email@example.com
It is early Sunday morning now, while writing this I watch the morning news edition on Channel 2, they interview my dear friend and colleague on the path - Dr. Abuelaish Izzeldin. It is amazing what this dear soul is doing for peace among the two nations. Following the article last Friday he received many excited telephone calls from Palestinians and Israelis- thanking him and encouraging him never to give up the knowing of peace on earth.
Dr. Abuelaish is the kind of person not only talking, he is a doer by its fullness of meaning. It is not only being a vital bridge between the societies by living actually on the two borders' sides, he puts himself in danger by crossing Erez checkpoint so often (they are shooting there..) but he also opened his home in Jabalya Refugees camp to the Israelis when we were allowed to go there. Last time a group visited his home in the camp, met his friends and neighbours, happened in September the last weekend before the riots started. I do hope that soon we can go there again. I know he wish us to do so soon. I must have done something very good to gain this friendship. What a peace beacon!
By the way, in the article he didn't just say that he could never lose hope, he said: " It is now the heavy dark before the big Light come".
I cannot agree more.
Jean, she then sent on a letter which started as a personal letter from her friend Anael to another friend in Cyprus, but she decided to send it to all of us for it gave some idea of the feelings and thoughts of the ordinary everyday person who is affected by this tragic war, you may not want to send it out but I felt again that I had to send it to you.
Hi Maggie, So nice to hear from you , I have no idea why the mail has not been coming. I seem to be getting mail without any problem or maybe not and just don't know about it. Things here have been pretty tough but luckily where I live it is very quiet and thank God, Tommy, who is in the military, so far has been far from the action. Hold thumbs that it stays that way!
What this has brought for me, is being very involved in peace work. Before I was "involved" through others like Hagit. Here in the Galalie, we are interspersed with Arab villages and as you probably know this last October was the first time that they arose and made it clear in no uncertain terms that they are unhappy with what is happening here. It is about time that we as a nation, who has gone through so much persecution - open our eyes and see what we are doing to these people. Being a South African I can smell it and feel it, and believe me I know where it leads.
I am determined not to sit back and allow this to happen -so all my effort and time is in this direction.....the only thing that is not so good is that of course it is all voluntary and one needs to earn a few pennies..so this is the only small frustration I have.
We are very busy spiritually and in the "ordinary" world, doing our best to change the situation or at least wake people up to reality...The latest thing is that someone who runs a cable TV in the Arab sector wants to start a peace program and has asked myself and a friend to help him with ideas, finances etc., He says he cannot sleep at night knowing that he has this tool in his hands and not use it for a higher purpose than money. Where we get finances for this project God alone knows but if it is what will help and I believe it will - I trust that He will take care of the finances too. What I think will be a great idea is to have people share their transformative experiences, where they let go of their cultural conditioning and allowed reality to touch their hearts and change their outlook ..I can think of so many examples...myself included.
One beautiful example is from the last workshop that Devra from Divine Unity did here - do you remember I once tried to play you one of her tapes? - Well she has really committed herself to the Peace process and is coming over a couple of times a year and sending her facilitators to work in between. The first time she came we were 8 Israelis, the second time about 40-50, and this last time close to 200. We also had the honor of having Arabs with us - not many but there were a few - and another sector that made my heart sing were the religious Jews - some of them being ultra religious. The day after the gathering we had a meeting where those who wanted to share or needed support could come.
One of the women who came was this ultra-religious woman. She shared that at some point she felt so much love for Ibrahim ( an amazing Arab man who was like the real father Abraham to all of us- bringing food every day to feed us, a smile on his face that can never be wiped away even when he drags his sore gouted foot) So this ultra-religious woman (Shulamit) shared that she felt so much love toward him that she wanted to hug him and suddenly she remembered that under strict religious laws, it is forbidden to touch another man beside your husband- she shared that she took a deep breath, knowing in her heart that this hug was a reconciliation between TWO NATIONS - so she did, hugging him " with all my heart." This is no small matter for a woman like her...she has been back for the last gathering we had a few weeks ago, this time she brought her husband for part of it...SO it was amazing having this man, dressed in black, his long beard down his chest and the teacher sharing about Christ Consciousness and all kinds of things that normally would have had him bolting out the door...so.... miraculous things are happening!
I could go on and on .... I believe that what we need to do is drop our cultural conditioning, what we were taught as children, and see the truth we are all equal in the eyes of GOD therefore we all deserve equal rights and equal opportunity
NO life is worthless, so why are we prepared to have our children die for a land - do we really believe that the land is more important than our sons lives. I hope that eventually the mothers will stand up from either side and say NO MORE OF THIS CRAZINESS - literally refusing to have their children take part in this madness.
I have also hosted some wonderful gatherings with peace activists from the USA. One of them was Leah Green who has a way of working called "Compassionate Listening" - when I heard the name from a mutual friend I just started to cry. This is exactly what we need to be able to do. Compassionately listen to each other - no judgement, no trying to change anything, the other persons reality or ideas... just listen and the healing will take place.
That gathering we had 17 Americans and we were about 10 Israelis just sharing our experiences and frustration at the situation etc... we got a lot of encouragment to carry on even though the results cannot be seen at the moment.
We are now trying to organise a workshop for 7 Israelis and 7 Palestinians to take this course and pass it on... maybe this way we can create change. I honestly believe that it is us, the simple people who will make the change. The politicians on either side have proven to us for the last 50 years that the way they are going about it is not helping... so it is us who need to go into heart action and big time...
The other gathering was with Louise Diamond, who brought with her a group of amazing people from Hawaii - this time we were lucky to have Jewish and Arab people present. Louise did amazing work with us. Lots of tears flowed and we were given the opportunity to play/act the other side and to speak from their point of view, or to speak from the point of view of a rightist or whatever. She made a living sculpture out of us and then we each spoke from the mouth of the person we were supposed to be... it was an amazing exercise and already positive things have come out of it. One of the Arab girls shared at the beginning of the meeting that she was in a terrible crisis with her very best friend who is Jewish - the reason being over a terrorist attack that they each saw through different eyes - she felt that she was sick and tired of having to apologise for her existence and having to change what she really feels in order to fit in, etc. At the end of the day she shared that she had received so much love and encouragement that she will go back to her friend and will find a way to reconciliate... which is what happened and now the two of them who are young women learning to be social workers, have gotten together with two of their teachers, one Arab and one Jewish and are planning to do workshops between Jewish and Arab women.
I personally in my spare time, which isn't much, would like to start workshops for women on empowerment. I honestly believe that it is we the women who will bring the peace and for this we need to be connected to our inner power - to recognise what is holding us back, to connect and nurture our inner child, to forgive, to come to a place of compassion and empowerment... I have it all worked out but for some strange reason it has not come into physical reality yet. I trust that there is something else I need to do first, so this is in the oven meantime. I have also started to write... what a pleasure at long last. My poetry intermingled with the writing and it is flowing amazingly... the time must be right. I don't have to think at all, it just flows onto the page. I hope to get this published so maybe that is where I get my income and can concentrate on the peace work without having to worry.
We have moved into our new house which I prefer to call a sanctuary - it is more beautiful than I could ever have imagined. I feel as if we have won the lottery or something like that. There is plenty of place to host gatherings and I am also playing with the idea of bringing groups from overseas for a spiritual tour of the Galalie including meetings with Kabalistic teachers, Druid, Moslem and Christian spiritual people, sightseeing in the morning and afternoon and evening for spiritual enrichment. We have plenty of bed and breakfast villas here and I could have a few people stay in our house, so these ideas I have for peacemakers who are interested in seeing things from a more personal aspect.
Well I need to be off for a meeting that we are having this evening- most of the participants are social workers and psychologists, Jews and Arabs and we have decided to work on our personal issues so that we will be able to be more professional when working with bigger groups that we all hope and pray will happen in the not to far future.
This letter started as a personal letter to my friend Maggie in Cyprus but I have decided to share it with you all as it can give you a picture of what is happening here at grass roots level. There is hope. Yesterday there was a picture in the newspaper of a personal friend of Hagit from Gaza, Dr Iz Al Deen who lives in Gaza and works at the hospital in Beer-Sheva, if he can say that he has hope with all that he and his people are going through, then surely there must be some truth to it.
Knowing personally people like this makes a big difference and gives me the incentive to carry on no matter what is happening around me.
Blessings to you all, with hope for better days and the inner knowing that peace is on its way and may we be lucky enough to experience it.
May Peace prevail on earth.
With love Anael.

HERE IS ANOTHER URGENT ISSUE STILL REQUIRING OUR COLLECTIVE ATTENTION
News on the National Marine Fisheries Service public hearings in Hawaii about whether the US Navy should be allowed to kill more whales and dolphins with its Low Frequency Acoustic Sonar (LFAS)
From: Benedick Howard <firstname.lastname@example.org>
Date: Thu, 3 May 2001
In the spring of 1998 I was living on the magical Big Island of Hawai'i. For several nights in a row I was having a dream about a humpback whale that was swimming with me eye to eye. In these unusually lucid dreams the whale continued to share with me her unconditional openness, peace and wisdom. It changed me profoundly and inspired a new relationship with these wise beings. One day I was out for a run and came to the bay near where I was living. Often there are dolphins in the bay and many of us would be down there shortly after dawn to slip into the water and go swimming with our dolphin friends. That day I was given a special greeting as a humpback whale and her calf were breaching repeatedly. Another day I was out on the ocean with friends and a whale did two swan dives right in front of us when we were swimming and deep inside I knew that the show was for me and the work I was about to do.
Shortly after the whales came to visit with me I was told that the US Navy was conducting sonar experiments in the whale's breeding ground. They were deliberately targeting four species of whales including the humpback and the grey whales to determine how loud they could blast the sonar (LFA or LFAS) before the whales showed some sign of avoidance or unusual behaviour. What deeply alarmed me was the loudness of the equipment. The US Navy Low Frequency Active Sonar is millions of times louder than a 747 taking off and causes great damage to the immune system with injuries similar to being microwaved. At the Navy testing volumes, let alone full deployment volumes, it shears tissues, collapses organs and causes adrenal and brain damage. At close range it can pulverize any living being.
The US Navy equipment can produce well in excess of 240 dB sound levels. By "blasting" the sound into the oceans they have been killing whales, these sound levels depending on the frequencies will cause internal bleeding and death and in human much lower levels around 160 dB have permanently debilitated USN divers. Anybody out on the waters saw how distressed the whales had become and one team observed a calf flipping out in the water for hours until it presumably died. All the autopsies done on the whales have not been made available for independent evaluation and the evidence has been destroyed. To this date the US Navy continues to deny this evidence despite court hearings, testimonials and the evidence that they must have seen for themselves.
As a result of these experiences I began to write emails every week to the 2000 people on my list detailing what I could find out about the tests. The emails passed around the world as many others forwarded the message to their lists and friends. I wrote protest letters to every one I could find associated with the project. I went out on the ocean and swam in the waters next to the sonar vessel so that they could not conduct the tests and I developed a web site that featured the latest information about the sonar program, and co-formed a movement called Stop LFAS Worldwide. However in the beginning, no matter how much I researched I could not find any reports showing conclusively that the sonar was damaging the whales. One day I found what I was looking for ... an article published in Nature Magazine (the author a zoologist has since been fired from the University of Athens for writing this) and widely reported in the British press that a 1996 sonar test in the Mediterranean had killed 12 Cuvier beaked whales. Finally I had the evidence that I knew had to be there ... and wondered why none of the marine mammal researchers had written anything. Then I found out that the main players in that field were employed indirectly by the US Navy!
At that time the sonar was a black operations top secret project. The press would not cover any of my stories or even listen to me. Then as we protested in the waters some of us got sick, myself included. Slowly the news teams were allowed to cover the story ABC Channel 7 http://www.dreamweaving.com/realav/index.html and most recently (April 2001) 60 Minutes II covered the recent Bahamas strandings. http://www.dreamweaving.com/lfas/av
Last week I protested, attended, spoke and video taped the National Marine Fisheries Service public hearings about US Navy application for a permit to kill more whales with the sonar devices. It was a fiery emotional meeting with the US Navy continuing their disinformation stories about it being necessary for enemy submarine detection.
I hope you understand the worldwide and even cosmic ramifications of this destructive sonar device. Its effect is not only destroying the habitat of the whales but also the very vibrations within our living oceans and coastal communities. The deeper effect is potentially even more devastating because the sonar is to be deployed in over 80% of our oceans.
Please take a look at the 60 Minutes video and my video of the hearings called Resounding Jericho - Stop LFAS - it will be our cries that will crumble the walls of our modern day establishment at http://www.dreamweaving.com/lfas/av
Please, please, please protest via the link to the National Resources Defense Council's protest form. http://www.nrdc.org/wildlife/marine/nlfa.asp

Subject: URGENT! Trade in your Teddy Bear for an AK47
Turn in your teddy bear for an AK47 Demand Conjugal Visits for all Political Prisoner Now!
On April 20th, during protests against the Summit of the Americas, Jaggi Singh was nabbed by undercover police and charged with several offenses, the most serious being possession of a dangerous weapon. The weapon in question was an enormous catapult used to launch helpless teddy bears across the security perimeter. Those responsible for this heinous crime have denied that Singh had anything to do with their glorious catapult, and today will be sending in signed confessions of guilt to the authorities, and turning in their stuffed comrades to local police stations across the country. Meanwhile, Singh has been denied bail, and will be held for several months until his trial.
DIST (Deconstructionist Institute for Surreal Topology), the group behind the catapult action, has also learned that Singh and other political prisoners are being denied conjugal visits. Needless to say, this is a clear violation of the Geneva Convention, and DIST has asked that Amnesty International investigate this terrible abuse of human rights.
DIST is also announcing a campaign of teddy bear rage aimed at freeing the prisoners captured during the Summit of the Americas. They are asking people to catch as many stuffed animals as they can, and mail them to Le Grande Fromage, Jean Chretien (this can be done free of charge), and to Quebec Justice Minister Paul Begin (addresses below).
In order to encourage the public to send in their stuffed animals, DIST has sent out a fake press release and set up a fake web page, announcing a teddy bear exchange program, similar to the gun exchanges which occur in the United States.
DIST is demanding the following:
1) We want our catapult back!
2) Free Jaggi Singh and other POW's
3) Conjugal visits for all political prisoners
4) Worldwide revolution with eternal grooviness as its only goal
We ask that people turn in their stuffed animals until all demands are met.

---- fake press release----
For Immediate Release Wednesday, May 2nd
Last week, during the Summit of Americas, citizens of this country were shocked to see teddy bears being launched from a catapult at our brave security forces. While our police were protected by their riot armour (thankfully!), we feel it is incumbent upon us to ensure that never again, will the lives of our officers be put in jeopardy by teddy bear violence. One of the suspected catapulters has been apprehended, and we will spare no effort to ensure that he is brought to justice.
However, the prosecution of those involved in this act of teddy terror is not enough. Today, the Justice Department is announcing a new program to get dangerous teddy bears off the streets. For the safety of our children, and for the safety of all, we need to act.
Today, we are kick-starting our teddy bear exchange program. We ask that our fellow citizens send us their teddy bears, in exchange for items ranging from tear gas canisters, to batons, to AK47's
We do not seek to ban teddy bears. We know that good, law-abiding citizens sometimes own teddy bears for legitimate purposes. Rather, we seek to reduce the number of teddy bears out there, to ensure that a plague of teddy bear atrocities will not infect this great country of ours.
It is astounding that anyone can walk into a thrift shop, Salvation Army or toy store, and buy, without a license, or background check, as many stuffed animals as they want. That is why we are working with Parliament, to enact strong teddy bear legislation, to ensure that teddy bears do not fall into the hands of criminals. More importantly, we will continue to enforce existing teddy bear control laws, in order to stem the tide of teddy-violence.
In the meantime, we implore our fellow citizens to send in their stuffed animals. Canadians can mail them for free to: Stop Teddy Violence c/o Jean Chretien, Le Grande Fromage House of Commons, Ottawa Ontario
Or those with money can send them to:

Subject: Fwd: [ncndiscuss] A Brief History of May Day
The Brief Origins of May Day By Eric Chase, Olympia IWW
Most people living in the United States know little about the International Workers' Day of May Day. For many others there is an assumption that it is a holiday celebrated in state communist countries like Cuba or the former Soviet Union. Most Americans don't realize that May Day has its origins here in this country and is as "American" as baseball and apple pie, and stemmed from the pre-Christian holiday of Beltane, a celebration of rebirth and fertility.
In the late nineteenth century, the working class was in constant struggle to gain the 8-hour work day. Working conditions were severe and it was quite common to work 10 to 16 hour days in unsafe conditions. Death and injury were commonplace at many work places and inspired such books as Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" and Jack London's "The Iron Heel". As early as the 1860's, working people agitated to shorten the workday without a cut in pay, but it wasn't until the late 1880's that organized labor was able to garner enough strength to declare the 8 hour workday. This proclamation was without consent of employers, yet demanded by many of the working class.
At this time, socialism was a new and attractive idea to working people, many of whom were drawn to its ideology of working class control over the production and distribution of all goods and services. Workers had seen first-hand that Capitalism benefited only their bosses, trading workers' lives for profit.
Thousands of men, women and children were dying needlessly every year in the workplace, with life expectancy as low as their early twenties in some industries, and little hope but death of rising out of their destitution. Socialism offered another option.
Today we see tens of thousands of activists embracing the ideals of the Haymarket Martyrs and those who established May Day as an International Workers' Day. Ironically, May Day is an official holiday in 66 countries and unofficially celebrated in many more, but rarely is it recognized in this country where it began.
Over one hundred years have passed since that first May Day. In the earlier part of the 20th century, the US government tried to curb the celebration and further wipe it from the public's memory by establishing "Law and Order Day" on May 1. We can draw many parallels between the events of 1886 and today. We still have locked out steelworkers struggling for justice. We still have voices of freedom behind bars as in the cases of Mumia Abu Jamal and Leonard Peltier.
We still had the ability to mobilize tens of thousands of people in the streets of a major city to proclaim "THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!" at the WTO and FTAA demonstrations.
Words stronger than any I could write are engraved on the Haymarket Monument:
THE DAY WILL COME WHEN OUR SILENCE WILL BE MORE POWERFUL THAN THE VOICES YOU ARE THROTTLING TODAY.
Truly, history has a lot to teach us about the roots of our radicalism. When we remember that people were shot so we could have the 8-hour day; if we acknowledge that homes with families in them were burned to the ground so we could have Saturday as part of the weekend; when we recall 8-year old victims of industrial accidents who marched in the streets protesting working conditions and child labor only to be beat down by the police and company thugs, we understand that our current condition cannot be taken for granted - people fought for the rights and dignities we enjoy today, and there is still a lot more to fight for. The sacrifices of so many people can not be forgotten or we'll end up fighting for those same gains all over again. This is why we celebrate May Day.

I think you are calling Bush the devil, but Clinton was the one who put martial law on the books. It was Clinton who only put through key environmental legislation on his very last days so he knew that it would have to be reviewed by the next President. It was Clinton who left an economy over taxed and on the verge of a slump. It was Clinton who cheated his wife, lied to the Senate and made a fool of the USA! Why demonise poor Bush, who has to balance the books?
All politicians have to keep the economy positive if the people are to have jobs and be able to eat!
Pray for logic, the reduction of violence at home and abroad. This will reduce the budget! Also pray for the CIA to be audited- one of the biggest and most secret sums of money every taxpayer supports in ignorance of where the money goes! Clinton increased their allowance!
Armaments cost more than any other engineering. Their manufacturers control a lot of government thinking on both sides, remember Clinton started a war every time he was in trouble!
Pray for logic and peace,
