Firstly thank you Jean for all the information you send to us on the Earth Rainbow network and the hours you spend collating it. I felt to forward to you the address of the "Casa Alianza" web site that is working to prevent the murder and abuse of street children in South America. The biggest killer of these children is the world's indifference to their plight. An estimated 100 million children live and work on the streets in the developing world; 40 million in Latin America alone. Rocío Rodríguez García of Casa Alianza International says that on the long road towards the fight for human rights, we have forgotten the rights of street children.

Casa Alianza Latin America assist annually, some 8961 children and adolescents. Many of them are victims of inter family violence, family disintegration, drug addictions and sexual exploitation. They are children that share their poverty with rats in rubbish dumps. That have no access to education, they don't have hot food, nor clean clothes, they calm their hunger by sniffing glue or sell their bodies for a few dollars. Street children are being tortured and murdered and the people responsible are not being brought to justice. By networking this information and the Casa Alianza web address helps to educate and inform people who are otherwise ignorant of what is occurring to street children in Latin America. Maybe some of you may feel to network this information or help in other ways.

Executive director of the John Muir Project, Hanson said today: "George W. Bush's speech from Sequoia National Park rings hollow. Surrounding that national park on all sides are national forests in which the Bush administration has vowed to increase logging levels. Bush's new Forest Service chief, Dale Bosworth, recently pledged to do the same; and his Interior Secretary, Gale Norton, has threatened to reduce the boundaries of the new Sequoia National Monument so that logging corporations will be able to cut down currently protected old growth stands. The Bush administration also suggested that it might overturn the brand-new Sierra Nevada Forest Plan in order to eliminate the new environmental restrictions on deforestation. Bush's new Agriculture secretary, Ann Veneman, actually wrote the timber industry's comments on the Sierra Plan not long before she was appointed. Bush himself received $1.7 million from timber industry executives in one night during a campaign stop in Oregon. He is bought and paid for by logging interests. Given the Bush administration's clear intent to plunder federal lands in the Sierra Nevada and elsewhere in the nation, Bush's shameless photo-op in Sequoia was loaded with enough hypocrisy and cynicism to flatten a forest."

Campaign coordinator for the National Forest Protection Alliance, Kreilick said today: "Bush's appearance at Sequoia National Park amounts to pure window dressing. By focusing on cutting haze in the national parks, the president is attempting to cloud Americans' attention to the administration's resource-extraction agenda on our public lands, particularly in our national forests. Like during former Secretary of Interior James Watt's tenure in the early '80s, the Interior and Agriculture departments have become the domain of industrialists intent on furthering the profits of the oil, gas, timber, mining and ranching industries. Bush's trip to California was nothing more than a public relations smokescreen designed to reverse Bush's anti-environmental image while still selling his bogus energy plan. The reality of the Bush administration's policies is far different: rolling back the Forest Service's Roadless Initiative ... increasing taxpayer-financed logging of our national forests, opening up all federal lands and coastlines to oil and gas exploration and suspending any new listings for endangered plants and animals; all reflect the desire to place commodity interests above the public's interests. Americans want to see their public lands de-commodified and so should not be fooled by such stunts."

My son is an avid (and ecologically sensitive) fisherman, so I sent him an article from today's NY Times on lobster fishing in Maine. His reply devastated my assumption that eating 'dolphin-safe' tuna is ecologically sound and needs to be read by everyone who buys tuna. I will be passing his information on to markets, tuna companies, newspapers, legislators, ecology groups and everyone else I can think of, and I encourage you to do the same if you are moved by the prospect of the rapid extinction of tuna.

Thanks. From reading the article, I think the Maine lobster fishermen are doing some things right: letting little ones, big ones, and breeders go. It said they keep only one in eight. That's why the lobsters are doing well despite the fishing. Other commercial fisheries are indiscriminate and kill many fish that are not old enough or not even the right type. Longlines and "dolphin safe tuna" are two of the worst.

Dolphin safe tuna is the worst thing to ever happen to tuna. Adult tuna follow schools of certain types of dolphin. America, Mexico, and Ecuador have large fleets that used to look for the dolphins, then surround the dolphins and tuna with net. These are not gill nets that catch and kill the animals but large curtains that corral them. If they could get a few dolphins inside the net, all the tuna would stay in too. The American and Mexican fleets would then "dip" the top of the net to let out the dolphins and actually jumped in the nets themselves to make sure the dolphins got out. The Ecuadorians just hauled them all in and threw out the dead dolphins. Someone got onboard an Ecuadorian tuna boat and filmed the dolphin massacre, justifiably causing a huge outrage. People wrongly assumed that all tuna were caught in this manner and outlawed using dolphins to catch tuna. However all American and Mexican fishing boats were required to have a U.S. government observer on board and they were not allowed to kill dolphins. I met with one such man who spoke to our fishing club. He had amazing pictures of the whole process. He had lots of pictures of the dolphins swimming inside the nets and even I thought they looked fine. They seemed to be waiting, but certainly did not looked panicked or upset. He even had pictures of a pair breeding while inside the net. He had lots of pictures of the people letting the dolphins out. He said in his ten years as a tuna boat observer he saw fewer than a dozen dolphins die in the nets. The problem is that now it is illegal to follow the dolphins so instead the fleets have to target juvenile fish because they school up close to land and can be readily found without relying on the dolphins. This is a twofold problem.

Many if not all of the fish they are catching have not yet reproduced; and it takes many more individuals to equal the same tonnage. An adult, dolphin-following tuna weighs two to three hundred pounds and has reproduced several times. Now they catch tuna in the 20 to 60 pound range that have not yet reproduced or done so only once. You can see it takes up to fifteen times the amount of individuals to yield the same weight of tuna meat. I was fishing for tuna once at the Cortes Bank, 100 miles off of southern California. We saw a school of tuna headed our way and we were eagerly awaiting our chance to catch a few out of the large school. A helicopter flew over and in minutes speedboats had surrounded the entire school with net just a couple hundred yards from our boat. Along came the tuna boat and hauled aboard every single fish in the school. I couldn't believe it. There were thousands. If we had our chance, we might have caught 10, 20, or maybe 30 fish out of the school. In the past a tuna boat would not have been interested in such a school of younger fish.

Tuna will not be here much longer because of "dolphin safe" tuna.

EXTINCTION IS FOREVER - THE LAST WHALES 2001

People of the world are unaware of the pending fate of the world’s whales.

Dramatic and immoral decisions are about to be made which will open the doors to commercial whaling again, leading to the end of the 15 year old whaling moratorium.

The first crisis point is the July 23/27 meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in London.

Member nations of the Whaling Commission will vote on bringing in quotas of whale “stocks” for the resumption of commercial whaling. Whaling Commission members will also vote on the establishment of the South Pacific Sanctuary, which is sorely needed in the ongoing fight to really save the whales. At present the vote is stacked against the creation of this whale sanctuary.

Youngheart made a television special ‘The Last Whale’ in 1994 which was widely acknowledged as a major catalyst in the media campaign to establish the Southern Ocean Sanctuary in Antarctica.

We intend to re-make the film, update it, shoot new segments, and get it to air before the crucial July 23 meeting in London. This film will again “spill blood on the water” to grab worldwide attention for the plight of the whales.

We urgently need to raise US$250,000 to remake the film fast. We are looking for backers for this important initiative.

Time is very short, as it was back in 1994. The odds are long. The stakes are high.

WE DID IT BEFORE. WE CAN DO IT AGAIN.

When the moratorium banning commercial whaling came into effect back in 1986, everyone believed the world’s whales were saved. They weren’t. In 1993 Norway started commercial whaling again in blatant defiance of the whaling ban and international pressure. Japan did the same. In 1993/94 a global campaign supported the creation of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary in A n t a rctica, the feeding grounds for whales. Youngheart (supported by International Fund for Animal Welfare, World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace) produced the television special ‘The Last Whale’, a hard hitting expose of Japan’s ruthless tactics in their pursuit of commercial whaling.

Quite simply, the Japanese were buying (and are still buying) votes at the International Whaling Commission to allow them and the Norwegians to continue whaling.

‘The Last Whale’ was produced in just 4 months and was rushed to air in the US, UK, Europe, Australia, and other territories. It caused an avalanche of response and The Southern Ocean Sanctuary was created at the 1994 Mexico meeting of the IWC (24 votes to Japan’s 1).

BUT THE FIGHT TO SAVE THE WHALES IS STILL FAR FROM OVER.

At the 2000 meeting of the IWC in Adelaide, Australia, member nations urged Japan to stop ‘scientific whaling’. Despite international protest and outrage Japan continues to hunt under so-called ‘scientific’ loopholes in IWC regulations that enable them to kill a ‘quota’ of Minke whales each year.

In April this year Japan’s whaling fleet carried out the most controversial whale hunt since whaling was outlawed. The Japanese whalers killed endangered species for the first time. The Japanese government confirmed their fleet killed not only 440 Minke whales since mid-November 2000, but also 43 Brydes and 5 Sperm whales, both endangered species. This is the first season the Japanese Government has admitted the slaughter of endangered species.

THE WHALES HAVE NOT BEEN SAVED.

THE SITUATION IS RAPIDLY GETTING WORSE.

At the July 2001 meeting of the IWC in London, Japan and Norway will continue their push for their whale slaughtering program and an end to the moratorium, and will torpedo the vote for the South Pacific Sanctuary.

Japan is using the same dirty tricks again, buying the votes particularly of Carribean island nations.

IT’S THE 21ST CENTURY, A NEW MILLENNIUM. TIME TO STOP THE BLOODY WHALING.

Youngheart is acting urgently to remake ‘The Last Whale ... 2001’ as a thoroughly researched, intelligent, powerful and passionate television special.

‘The Last Whale ... 2001’ will expose how the Japanese spend millions of dollars in bribes to procure votes from small countries to allow the Japanese and the Norwegians to kill whales.

As public concern for the future of whales grew in the ‘70s, other countries joined. Now there are 38 members.

People of the world are basically ignorant about the pending fate of the whales, lulled into complacency by occasional well-publicised victories, like the Southern Ocean Sanctuary in 1994. But the war goes on. The whales are not protected by the UN or any world body.

THE INTERNATIONAL WHALING COMMISSION IS A FISHING CLUB.

Whales are a symbolic issue, capturing for millions the essence of humankind’s destructive relationship with the natural world. If the whales disappear from the oceans of the world because of the irresponsible actions of a few countries, what hope is there for the less obvious ecological issues?

‘The Last Whale ... 2001’ has to be completed by mid July to go to air before the IWC meeting starting July 23 in London.

We already have more than 50% of the film in the can and most of the music. New segments will be filmed around the world between now and end June. We intend to arouse international popular opinion by featuring stars from film, television and music circles commenting on the crisis and articulating their support. Possibilities so far are Bryan Adams, Olivia Newton-John, Bono, Sinead O’Connor, Sting, Pierce Brosnan, Van Morrison, Bob Geldof.

Driven by a strong music soundtrack by musicians such as Bryan Adams, Peter Gabriel, Midnight Oil, Yothu Yindi, and others, the film will combine wonderful footage of whales...depicting their grace, their majesty, their pacific nature...with evidence of the ruthlessness of man over the ages, hunting and slaughtering them for facile products, and now for a high-priced food ‘delicacy’ in Japan especially. The film will put a strong case for establishing the South Pacific Sanctuary, and will call on island nations of the world to unite in protecting the whales. These island nations soon must stick together to effect climate change, which will otherwise ultimately flood them, but Carribean island nations have been bought off by the Japanese in the whaling conflict.

‘The Last Whale ... 2001’ will be a passionate, timely, hard-hitting, but beautiful, high quality film that can make a difference to the way we the people of the world today are judged by history for our connection with this fragile planet.

Citizens of industrialized countries are eating more meat, drinking more coffee, popping more pills and driving more miles, the Worldwatch Institute says in its latest report on the environmental impact of human lifestyles.

The 10th anniversary edition of Vital Signs 2001: The Trends That are Shaping Our Future illustrates how an economy geared towards insatiable consumer demand can degrade human, environmental, and economic health.

A team of 20 reachers, writers and editors from the Washington, DC based environmental think tank contributed to Vital Signs 2001, which tracks 49 key trends.

"We're finding more and more evidence that the developed world's consumption-filled lifestyle choices are often as unhealthy for ourselves as for the planet we inhabit," said Michael Renner, Worldwatch researcher and Vital Signs project director. "And while much of the world remains too poor to afford such choices, the emerging middle classes in developing nations are following the same damaging patterns pioneered in the developed world. Meat and coffee consumption are on the rise, as is obesity, and over half of the world smokers are now in developing nations."

Worldwatch researchers have documented that humans' appetite for meat is growing quickly. "The number of four-footed livestock on earth at any given moment has increased 60 percent since 1961, and the number of chickens, ducks and other fowl, has quadrupled, from 4.2 billion to 15.7 billion," the report says.

Feedlot production, the fastest growing method for raising livestock, is being recognized as a threat to soil, air and water quality. Concentrated in North America and Europe, feedlots are now found near urban centers in Brazil, China, India, the Philippines and elsewhere in the developing world.

The demand for more meat means that more antibiotics are fed to farm animals, a practice which reduces the effectiveness of these drugs in humans as the microorganisms at which they are targeted develop resistance.

The industrial farming practice of giving feed mixed with blood and bone meal to vegetarian animals has created a crossover of disease from animals to humans - mad cow disease which in humans becomes new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

All the trends are interlaced. Fuel prices skyrocket, yet people buy more cars and drive them farther than ever before. The world's fleet of passenger vehicles reached 532 million in 2000.

A greater reliance on cars heats up the planet and leads to more sedentary lifestyles, a major cause of obesity, Vital Signs says.

Technological innovation soars, yet 90 percent of commercial energy use worldwide continues to come from fossil fuels. Alternative energy sources such as wind still only account for one percent of the world total, Worldwatch reports.

There are a few positive signs in Vital Signs 2001. Growing numbers of people are using socially responsible criteria to guide their investments. In the United States, socially responsible investments climbed from $59 billion in 1984 to $2.16 trillion in 1999. That means $1 out of every $8 under professional management is funding socially responsible organizations.

The Vital Signs 2001 report was made possible with the support of the W. Alton Jones Foundation and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

UNEP executive director Klaus Toepfer said the challenge of this new century is to extend the economic progress of the last 50 years, while halting the ecological decline, for a sick planet will, sooner or later, lead to a faltering economy.

"The question is whether humanity will forge a healthier, sustainable future or risk the downward spiral as a result of not understanding the ecological and economic threshold the world is now on," Toepfer said. "I hope that the statistical snapshot contained in Vital Signs 1 will help fill this information gap."

Arizona with a layer of dust earlier this spring. Uncommon in the
U.S. since the Dust Bowl days, such storms are occurring more and
more frequently in China, where overplowing and overgrazing are
causing vast deserts to spread, writes Lester R. Brown in Grist.
Nine hundred square miles of land in China are lost to desert each
year. The northern half of the country is literally drying out as
rainfall declines, aquifers are depleted, and water tables drop.

DUMB AND DUMA
Residents in Kariwa, Japan, who live near the world's largest nuclear plant, voted on Sunday to reject plans to fuel the plant with recycled plutonium, known as MOX. Turnout was high, at 85 percent, and though the referendum was not legally binding, such a vote is rare in Japan and puts the government's pro-MOX strategy in doubt. Meanwhile in Russia, the lower house of parliament, the Duma, will hold a final vote next week on whether to allow the import of nuclear waste, which would either be stored in perpetuity or reprocessed into nuclear fuel and exported. The plan, backed by President Vladimir Putin, is expected to pass. Alexei Yablokov, an anti-nuke scientist and activist, said a poll released by Greenpeace last week found that 90 percent of the voters in Russia are opposed to the plan.

Germany To Phase Out Nuclear Energy

GERMANY - In keeping with Europeís ongoing effort to move toward responsible environmental management, Germany is set to phase out its 19nuclear power stations over the next 20 years.The government deal withthe energy companies will Germany the first European country to announcean end to nuclear power.

Less than a week after the German deal, Sweden voiced its intention tophase out coal and nuclear power.

"Both coal and nuclear power have to be phased out if we are to reachsustainable development around the Baltic Sea," said Environment minister,Kjell Larsson.Sweden's 11 nuclear reactors provide 48% of the country'spower with the rest coming from wind, sun, hydro and biomass.The Swedishgovernment is also helping Lithuania close down one of their nuclearreactors.

Mr. Larsson said that Sweden wants to lead the world in developingrenewable energy technologies.

Meanwhile Turkey, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit announced the cancellationof the controversial nuclear power plant proposed for AkkuyuBay on theMediterranean coast north of Cyprus.

"The world is abandoning nuclear power," the Prime Minister said."It isunnecessary for us, for the time being, to invest in nuclear energy.

Mr. Ecevit emphasized that Turkey would focus on energy conservation andinvest in natural gas, hydro-electricity and solar and wind generation.

World nuclear power use is expected to peak in 2002 and then begin aperiod of sustained and permanent decline.

With the energy crisis, pollution of the environment and high gasoline prices, people and companies are looking for better ways to power their vehicles, homes and businesses. If the Gray motor design lives up to its promise, we could well be driving electric automobiles which recharge the batteries as you drive.

Current automobile manufacturer designs for electric vehicles rely on one of two systems, one uses battery packs that recharge rapidly, the other uses fuel cells to combine hydrogen with oxygen to create electric current.

Both have their limitations. Batteries are heavy, bulky and costly, requiring several connected in parallel to power an electric motor, as well as a practical lifespan of 3-5 years due to plate sulfation. The range can be as high as 300 miles between recharges, which can take from 30 minutes to two hours to accomplish. Fuel cells require highly explosive hydrogen gas and are themselves costly to produce.

With Gray's motor, a series of high amplitude, short duration magnetic pulses are discharged through dual high voltage coils. This pulse is used to repel another high voltage coil driven with like polarity. The energy used in both coils is extremely small yet produces incredible thrust, without heating.

Although the high voltage coils in Gray's electric motor also require battery power, the range would be greatly extended due to the highly efficient short duration pulses and because of the self-recharging design.

Researcher Peter Lindemann has also discovered a key link between the advanced high voltage research of Nikola Tesla into phenomena generated by unidirectional arc discharges and Gray's low voltage power conversion tube used to drive his motors.

A conference is being held in Dallas, Texas on June 16th and 17th where two of the original Ed Gray motors will be shown and the principles explained by Norman Wootan. Peter Lindemann will also present his findings about Gray's power conversion tube.

Doug Konzen, another motor researcher, has developed his own version of Gray's 'pulse power' motor which he will demonstrate. Konzen reports it has produced overunity and is currently being tested.

The conference will also present new and novel information on a claimed Russian antigravity device, gravity wave detector experimental results, use of geometric shapes as energy waveguides, a technique and patented electronic device to stimulate the energy field of the body to promote healing and a heat pump engine which runs on a temperature difference of 20 degrees to produce useable torque.
