1) SUMMARY

As one struggles to make sense of our fast-paced march towards an uncertain future, one has to consider what is undoubtedly a cornerstone of Life on Earth and a key condition for a successful transition to a sustainable and enlightened new way of life on Earth. Science has already understood that without symbiosis, Life simply would have not evolved to the utterly baffling level of complexity and yet enduring balance it has achieved through aeons of evolutionary progress. Not a single species lives in isolation, but all depend on the intricate Web of Life for their sustenance and survival. Obviously, the human species is no exception in this regard. Yet, through ignorance and a sheer disregard for the fragile environment on which we all depend for our continued existence, humanity has managed to render asunder the delicate balance that is vital to Life's continuance - and that, in the geological equivalent of the blink of an eye. What is missing is a deeply felt sense of our own symbiosis and oneness with all Life, an inner, intuitive knowledge that we are intricately connected with everything else and that if we keep pulling out threads from the Web of Life, it is the entire edifice made of all living things that will unravel and collapse, until all that is left is simple organisms from which Life will again patiently build up a new tapestry and create a new symphony over the course of tens of millions of years.

Such an outcome is not what we would consciously choose and yet most humans act as if it was precisely what they want to achieve. Such a legacy to our brief blossoming into a technologically potent and yet psychologically immature civilization would appear to be so utterly irresponsible and shortsighted as to be simply unthinkable. We must surely know better! As the pioneering awakeners and most favored elements of the emerging new Gaian civilization, we have a special and unique role in addressing this situation and fostering a conscious redirection of all of humanity's creativity, daily activities and long-term thinking towards a true understanding of our sacred role as caretakers and symbiotic stewards of what's left of the richest, most diverse biosphere ever manifested on this living planet. And one of our most crucial contributions to this process is nurturing and attaining within ourselves the innate sense of our Symbiosis and Oneness with all Life and, in so doing, communicating, through the combined power of our unified soulful awareness, this very knowledge to all our brothers and sisters of the greater human family.

Please, accept to willingly set aside 30 minutes or more of your time for the globally synchronized meditations hence proposed to you this Sunday and the next three Sundays to instill in the hearts and minds of all 6 640 000 000+ people now inhabiting the Earth the clear feeling that All is One, that All is Sacred, and that All That Is lives within and through each one of us in Symbiotic Oneness, for the Highest Good of All.

July 2007 will be recorded in the Akashic Records of Mother Earth as the Cosmic Moment when a critical mass of souls evolving on this planet reclaimed their Divine Birthright as stewards of the Earth and permanently reversed Humanity’s descent into oblivion.

It is important to note that the Divine Plan is unfolding in perfect synchronicity through the myriad activities of Light being orchestrated by embodied Lightworkers and the Company of Heaven. Every facet of this incredibly complex Ascension process is vital and critical to the success of this miraculous endeavor. No part of the plan is any more important than another.

In this article I will discuss two of the next phases of the Divine Plan. Please take this information into your heart of hearts, and ask your I AM Presence how you can be the most powerful Instrument of God to assist with these activities of Light.

Your part of this Divine Plan is unique. There is not another soul who has been prepared in exactly the same way to accomplish what you have volunteered to do. You have all of the wisdom, skill, knowledge, strength, courage and ability you need to succeed. The Legions of Light throughout Infinity are standing in readiness awaiting the opportunity to assist you at your beck and call.

Only your mighty I AM Presence can reveal to you the full magnitude of this auspicious moment in the Earth’s evolution. As you seek the Kingdom of Heaven within, all will be revealed to you. Read these words and feel them resonating in the deepest recesses of your heart. Allow the inner knowing of this Truth to awaken within you the remembrance of your purpose and reason for being.

On July 7, 2007, over two billion people around the world focused their attention on the global concert titled Live Earth. The purpose of this amazing event was to educate Humanity and to bring awareness of the various things people can do to change the adverse effects of global warming.

The collective cup of Humanity’s consciousness on this incredibly powerful day created a Chalice of Light through which the Light of God flowed to bless all Life. That monumental Divine Light prepared every atomic and subatomic particle and wave on Earth for the influx of Creation Energy that was destined to bless this planet on July 17, 2007.

On July 17, 2007, literally tens of millions of Lightworkers around the world joined together for a one-hour global meditation that was coined Fire the Grid. During that rare hour, which began at 11:11 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time, Humanity was joined by the Legions of Light throughout the whole of Creation. Through the unified efforts of Heaven and Earth, this planet was flooded with the 5th-Dimensional frequencies of the New Earth.

As the infinite perfection of this Creation Energy entered the Heart Flame of every man, woman and child on Earth, a long-awaited healing took place through the intervention of each person’s I AM Presence. This healing allowed the Grid of Divine Love that unites the Divinity within each person’s heart to be restored to its original Divine Intent and Potential.

This Grid of Divine Love has been a fragmented shadow of its original potential since Humanity’s fall from Grace aeons ago. This tragic situation has perpetuated the illusion of our separation from God and each other. It has also effectively prevented Humanity from perceiving our Oneness with ALL Life or hearing the inner voice of our I AM Presence. Consequently, our communication with the Realms of Illumined Truth and our Father-Mother God have been very, very limited, which was never part of the original Divine Plan.

The healing and reactivation of the Grid of Divine Love that is now uniting every Heart Flame is serving as a catalyst for Humanity’s awakening. It is causing profound changes to occur within every person at an atomic, cellular level.

Daily and hourly, as the influx of Creation Energy expands through the open door of Humanity’s collective consciousness, the Grid of Divine Love is becoming stronger and more powerful. The Beings of Light have indicated that the collective radiance of this Grid of Love is the most powerful force of Light on the planet at this time. It has formed a Bridge of Light that spans the abyss from the lowest vibrations on Earth into the 5th-Dimensional Realm of Infinite Physical Perfection. This is the Bridge to Freedom over which this Earth and all her Life are now Ascending onto the next Spiral of Evolution.

Now our Father-Mother God and the Company of Heaven are invoking our assistance once again. It is time for the most critical phase of the Divine Plan that has been attempted to date.

Now that the Grid of Divine Love within the Heart Flames of Humanity is once again fulfilling its Divine Purpose, we have the ability as never before to heal our self-inflicted separation from each other and our Father-Mother God. This is, in fact, the next phase of the Divine Plan. Can you fathom the elation pouring forth from the Heavenly Realms as this opportunity is presented to the dedicated Lightworkers on Earth? What an awesome and humbling honor.

To set the stage for this monumental activity of Light, a profound Truth from the Core of Creation is resounding through the ethers:

THERE IS NO SEPARATION!

We are all One, and we are all in this together. What affects one facet of Life affects all Life. The Divine Opportunities being presented to one Human Being are available to ALL Human Beings. This is true regardless of how oblivious a person may be of those opportunities.

We are living in a new paradigm. I know from outer appearances it looks like the horrific things taking place on Earth are involving the masses of Humanity, but that is an illusion. In Truth, the terrible things we are perceiving through the media involve a mere fraction of the six billion souls evolving on this planet. The vast majority of people around the world are loving people who are striving to live positive lives. Every day billions of people on Earth turn their attention to God and invoke the highest good for their loved ones and all Humanity. These prayers are always heard, and they are being answered.

The collective consciousness of Humanity has reached a critical mass of compassion for all Life on this planet. The ancient prophecies that indicated millions of souls would be left behind because they would not be ready to make the shift into the 5th Dimension are OBSOLETE. That troubling scenario has been averted through selfless acts of Divine Love and the tireless efforts of myriad Lightworkers over the past one hundred years. But our work is not finished!

As the Divine Wisdom flowing through the Grid of Divine Love enters our conscious minds, we begin to truly know that every Human Being is Divine, regardless of how far his or her behavior patterns and life experiences may be from reflecting that Truth. This is a vitally important realization in Humanity’s healing process.

Our thoughts and feelings are creative, and whatever we focus our attention on, we empower and bring into form. If we are constantly thinking and talking about the negative behavior patterns people are participating in or the things we do not like about the people themselves, we simply add our energy and power to the very things we dislike. This is true whether we are talking about our loved ones, our friends and coworkers, our associates and acquaintances or our governmental officials and world leaders. Actually, the more powerful and influential a person is, the more crucial it is for us to empower their Divine Potential instead of the mistakes they are making.

We can empower and energize every soul’s Divine Potential by focusing our attention on the Divinity pulsating in their heart and by asking their I AM Presence to take control of their thoughts, words, actions and feelings. Every person’s I AM Presence will guide him or her to respond and behave in ways that reflect only the highest good for all concerned.

This may seem like a very simple antidote for the atrocities people are inflicting on each other throughout the world, but it is one of the most powerful things we can do to hasten Humanity’s awakening and Transfiguration.

Many people are so buried in their negative belief systems and the pain and suffering they are experiencing that they cannot raise their heads above the chaos and confusion effectively enough to reunite with their I AM Presence. These people have no concept of the Oneness of Life and they truly believe that they must lie, steal, cheat and kill for their survival.

Those of us who have awakened from that nightmare and remember that we are ALL One have the responsibility of being our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers until they can awaken to that Divine Truth themselves. This does not mean that we are to just passively wait and watch for their awakening. It means that we are to actively be the Instruments of God we have volunteered to be.

Those of you who are reading these words have been prepared to assist in the Divine Mission of helping unawakened Humanity heal our self-inflicted separation from God and each other. If that were not the case, your I AM Presence would not have drawn this information into your sphere of awareness. This is a wondrous opportunity for you, and the Universe will joyously support your every effort in this essential endeavor.

We each have the ability to serve as a surrogate on behalf of Humanity. “As I AM lifted up, all Life is lifted up with me.” To begin the process, we need to open our hearts to every evolving soul on Earth. This is not easy when we observe some of the terrible things people are doing to each other and to the other lifeforms on the planet, but it is a necessary step in becoming an Instrument of God.

Remember, the most powerful awakening force in the Universe is the power of God’s Love flowing through your sacred Heart Flame into the Heart Flame of another Human Being.

We never know what set of circumstances compels people to choose the negative paths they have chosen or what causes them to make the self-destructive decisions they make, but in order to shift our feelings from anger and disappointment to love and understanding, we need to step back and contemplate the bigger picture. First of all, we must remember that everyone is doing the best they can according to their wisdom, their understanding and their belief systems.

This is true regardless of whether or not we think they should know better or whether it is obvious to everyone else in the world that what the person is doing is wrong. If the person fully understood the principle of the Oneness of all Life and the ramifications of their negative actions in the face of that fundamental Law, they would not behave in the negative manner in which they are behaving. It is just that simple.

When we grasp the Truth that everyone is doing the best they can, our thinking changes. We no longer look at people as bad or evil. Rather, we look at them as we would unaware children who are unable to comprehend the results of their behavior. Sometimes children do terrible things without any idea of what the end result of their actions will be, but instead of hating them and wishing them harm, we embrace them and strive to teach them a better way through love and patience.

Just for a moment, imagine that the person you perceive to be the most degenerate, evil person on the planet is someone you love. What if it is your child or your husband, your wife or your parent? You understand that they have done horrible things, but in your heart of hearts you know that in spite of their appalling behavior, there is a person inside whom you love, a person whom you know is capable of better things.

You believe, with every fiber of your being, that this person will one day awaken and choose to be the person you know they are destined to be. So you never give up hope, and you keep holding the vision of their Divine Potential. You continually invoke their I AM Presence and pray that they will wake up and choose to turn their life around.

The feelings of love, compassion and hope you would have for a loved one in that situation are the same feelings you need to awaken within your heart for every Human Being. After all, we truly are One Family, and we are sisters or brothers in every sense of the word. Through the love, compassion and dedicated invocations of awakened Lightworkers, the Grid of Divine Love is now softening the hearts and enlightening the minds of recalcitrant souls who are resisting the Light. These precious ones are gradually raising their heads above the negativity and, one-by-one, they are reclaiming the path of existence that will inspire them to fulfill the mission of cocreating Heaven on Earth.

As the newly activated Grid of Divine Love bathes the hearts and minds of Humanity, more and more people are awakening and remembering who they are and why they are here. When people awaken and their consciousness is raised up, they begin to “see with new eyes and hear with new ears.” This phenomenon has the effect of allowing people to clearly perceive the Divine Truth that ALL Life is interconnected, interrelated and interdependent. Then people know THERE IS NO US AND THEM; we are ALL One.

When this Truth resonates in the deepest recesses of our hearts, the validity of war becomes impossible to reconcile, and the distorted concept of poverty, greed, corruption, violence, abuse of power, oppression, hatred, selfishness, prejudice, pollution, disease, ignorance or any other reflection of our belief in separation becomes impossible to accept.

During this critical moment on Earth, nothing is happening by accident. If an opportunity is presented to us, we should take the information into our heart-of-hearts and see if it resonates as part of our Divine Service. If it does, then we should ask our I AM Presence to pave the way for us to participate according to our Divine Plans. Sometimes we will be called to travel and to physically join groups for an activity of Light. Other times we will be inspired to join the group in consciousness and, in loving support, to add our Light through invocations and meditations.

The important thing is for each of us to truly listen to our I AM Presence and to respond to our inner guidance with trust, confidence, enthusiasm and gratitude.

Opening our Hearts to the Universe

Once we have begun to let go of our fears, we can gradually become aware of the endless and literally infinite possibilities of discovery and learning awaiting in the innermost secret part of us. Through the umbilical cord of our consciousness linking us with the entire universe and its inexhaustible pool of knowledge, we can have direct access to the most precise and expert source of information and guidance available. Of course, we cannot receive an information for which we are not ready nor can we browse aimlessly into this gigantic "memory bank" of the universe. A "key" is needed and a "password" must be presented to the "door keeper".

This key, one will easily guess, is Love. For the heart must be unlocked to allow a free flow of energy from the universal Force of Life into us, which is the only way to raise our vibratory level and thus bring our consciousness in synchronization with the Universal Consciousness. Then, our "password" will be our humble request for a specific clue to a specific question, a request that should include not only our own concerns but also integrate some of the general concerns of Humanity as a whole.

When we have gained access to this universal field of consciousness, we will spontaneously receive a flow of information that is perfectly attuned and adapted to the present need and discover how right our intuition was -- provided we do not let doubt creep back in our mind and prevent us from acting upon the newly received information. There are various types of experiences we can gradually become familiar with once we have started discovering the endless possibilities of our soul connections. Let us describe some of them.

First, there is some highly significant information about ourselves and our role in this lifetime that usually comes at the climax of an intense meditation, when most of our daily preoccupations have fallen far in the background of our attention, thus allowing an almost totally free space of attention within us to explore new frontiers and touch new subjects. On those rare moments, we can experience a fully aware connection with the Universal Consciousness and identify with the deepest reality of our beingness. We can glimpse what is coming next on our path of evolution and have some very powerful visions and communions that will be key catalysts of change and evolution as well as a constant source of inspiration in our everyday life. We might also experience an incredibly fast infusion of new ideas and concepts that are seeded in a flash within our mind and whose complete significance and impact will be only gradually manifested in the following days, months and even years, as we unlock bit by bit the exact and full meaning of the whole vision.

Secondly, we can experience, on a lower level of attunement with the cosmic matrix of information, various insights and inspirations spontaneously coming to our mind in relation to some specific problems we have or some specific situation we face in our life. Those intuitive guidances usually come along with very pleasant bursts of "scintillating" energy along with a feeling of elation in the body which are there to support and confirm the validity and importance of the information given out to our attention. The more the information suggested is important for us on our evolutionary path, the more those accompanying sensations are strong and ecstatic. The more also they are clear and easily understandable whether they are in the form of spoken words in our mind or of vivid, explicit images.

Finally, and most importantly, we can be constantly receiving a flow of information in our day to day and even minute to minute activities and feel through our intuitive sense of rightness or wrongness if what we are thinking, saying or doing is the right thing to think, say or do at this exact moment in time. This is a very precise reference for assessment and self-adjustment that often goes on unnoticed. Being aware of this nearly "instinctive" selection process while we are saying something for instance, can greatly help us to be responsive to all the hidden subliminal information that we continually receive through our five senses as well as through our "sixth" sense, the telepathic, ultra-sensitive one, which can detect the reactions of other people to our words or attitude and immediately adjust for the best the ideas we are trying to communicate.

When someone becomes very sensitive to this inner guiding system and responds quickly to its indications and promptings, it is possible to modify an idea being expressed even while this idea is in the process of being formulated. But of course, this means being totally open to this inner guiding intuition and in total symbiosis with it, and, above all, not being attached to any personal and strongly held idea. If we tend to stick to a specific set of ideas and conceptions, then it will be hard to be flexible enough to allow for the interactive participation of our spiritual connections with the Universe. So there is always a total free will in this process. Everything depends on our willingness to let go of our resistance and open ourselves to the flow of communication with the universal Intelligence of Life at work within and around us.

Once we have become familiar with those various types of experiences that can help us and guide us on our Path towards the Light, we can literally tap at any time the infinite source of universal Knowledge and gradually discover all the powers available to us when we accept to serve the Great Purpose of Life in Its unfolding eternal evolution. We can become channels for the perfect manifestation of this Grand Design which for aeons has guided the countless expressions of the creative potential of Life: billions and billions of Life forms, not only on this tiny planet but, undoubtedly, upon billions and billions of other planets, everywhere in this prodigious Universe.

Barely emerging from the first chapters of evolution on this planet, our collective awareness is now expanding at an unprecedented pace, like a sudden explosion of consciousness, as the scientists unveil the mysteries of the physical world and as the spiritualists push back the limits of our perception of the spiritual worlds. And we are on the verge of an even more rapid and fascinating expansion of awareness as more and more people are opening their hearts to the inner guiding Light of Love and compassion for all that lives, thus discovering their immortal and sacred Link with the whole Universe... and all Life forms.

You have been embroiled in duality for so long that you have accepted it as your normal way of life. However, as you have started to awaken to the possibility of a different way of life, you have broken away from its hold. Many times you have realised that there are better ways to live, but have found difficulty in putting it into practise.

Now your dreams are coming true, and following the darkness of ages past you are seeing the stirring of a new way that has its roots in the Light. It has taken eons of time to reach this point, and there will be no going back to the old reality. It is therefore breaking up before your very eyes like the Berlin Wall, and will no longer hold anyone back. A glorious period will follow during which the people will dictate the course of Humanity.

You will need leaders to direct the new course of Man’s evolution, and these will be appointed quite quickly. They will truly reflect Man’s needs, and there will be no place for corruption or malpractices. Some already stand out and are known for their honesty, words of truth and encouragement. Once the dark have been removed they will come to the fore, backed and protected by the Galactic Federation and the higher Forces. You will recognise them for their truthfulness and integrity, and for the first time in ages be able to totally put your trust in them. The political style of old will not be acceptable, and the new leadership will be based upon high spiritual principles.

In communities all over the world there is a stirring of hearts and passion to end the centuries of darkness and war. Subconsciously you know there is only one way forward, otherwise Man would be doomed to fall lower into the abyss of complete chaos and destruction, Those possibilities are no longer a part of your reality, although changes that concern Mother Earth are still to go ahead. The difference is that now they will proceed with our full guidance, and every care taken to protect all forms of life.

The future beckons and at last Man will see the lighted path that is to be taken. Happiness will descend upon Earth the like of which you have not experienced for eons of time. Instead of the separation maintained by the dark, the differences between people will be overcome. The Light and Love you are capable of sharing will uplift others, and a great trust of unprecedented measure will engulf the planet. There will also be recognition of the fact that you are all travelling the same journey. It matters not which stage you have reached, as all of you will eventually leave the realms of duality behind.

We know you are ready to embrace a new and better way of life, and we shall be very much involved in ensuring that you do. In just a few years you will be party to remarkable changes that will result in a great upliftment in your quality of life. Your needs will be provided for and the suffering experienced for the lack of abundance will become a thing of the past. Much planning and preparation has brought you to this point in time, and it has not come this far to be destroyed by the dark.

Your freedom is paramount so that you may break out of your chains that have severely eroded your rights. We will not allow them to be abused any longer, and your criminal fraternity will not be allowed to interfere. We know exact level of consciousness each of you have reached, and we cannot be fooled by devious actions. Ultimately there will be no way that anyone can hide their true intentions, There will be an innate knowing when people speak without the intention of telling the truth. You are changing and developing powers that come with the new Being that is emerging, and once you are able to live in the energy of Love there will be no place for the negativity of old.

People that have already found their feet in the new energies often stand out, as they are noticeably different in the levels of kindness and peace that are part of the mien. Society has lacked sufficient true caring people to broker the changes we have spoken about, but that is rapidly changing. The prophecy that the meek would inherit the world was for this period you are now entering. They will come into their own once the influence of the dark has been removed. The new ways will be recognised as the only ones that will carry you forward, in preparation for the upliftment known as Ascension.

It does not require great effort to live in peace and harmony. Man is naturally a benign Being, and has suffered at the hands of those who have taught separation rather than the Oneness of all life. It is a simple maxim that tells you that if everything “That Is” has its origin in the creative energies of the Creator, you are one great form of consciousness. In your Universe that entity is known as God and carries out the plan for all life within it. The God’s of which there are many are your link to the Creator, and you live within their energy of Love.

We often tell you that truth is simple and easily understood, and as part of your enlightenment the Masters will walk amongst you once again. Needless to say, many are already upon Earth quietly doing their work to uplift mankind. When like their counterparts you call Space Beings they can come out into the open, there will be every opportunity for you to hear the truth about spiritual matters and your past history. Much has been distorted that has deliberately mislead you and hidden the truth from your eyes. They will be opened wide and you will be in no doubt as to the truth of who you are, your reason for being on Earth and experiencing duality.

I am Diane from Sirius a planet that figures often in your ancient myths and legends. We have been directly involved in your evolution, and shall continue to do so beyond this cycle of duality. The Galactic Federation comprises of many Star Nations that have links to you, and already have many of their representatives upon Earth. There will be a great celebration when once again the Star families meet their own. You will enjoy standing with us in the high energies we bring and love and understanding will bring you up to our levels, allowing you to reveal your godlike qualities embracing Unconditional Love.

Message of UNEP Executive Director, Klaus Toepfer on the occasion of World Environment Day

"Connect with the World Wide Web of Life"

The new millennium confronts us with a puzzling combination of promise and threat. The riches of the information age are being felt by all of us -- from the Internet, the internationalization of trade, to the inconceivable breakthroughs in medical science. Is anything more exciting and hopeful than the promises of an interconnected world -- one where all nations have access to a free flow of ideas and products -- where electronic commerce creates a brisk growth in the world economy -- and where ignorance and sickness are banished from the globe?

But despite the profits and promise of globalization our old problems are enduring -- and urgent. We contemplate the looming threats of inequalities brought about by the forces of globalization, poverty, reduced food security, the intricate balance between population, resources and the environment, the challenge of sustainable development and the relationship of all these to the future of humanity and the environment.

This year's World Environment Day with its slogan "Connect with the World Wide Web of Life" is a reminder that the Earth with all its complex, interlocking ecosystems, is the foundation of our lives. It is our common heritage. The bounty of nature is one and indivisible. It knows no frontiers, no territorial borders. It does not recognize any North-South divide or East-West distinction. As in a family, every element in nature, however small, is part of a whole and contributes to the harmony of the whole and to its delicate overall balance. Every animal and plant species known or unknown - has its place, role and function, deserving of protection just as a family protects all its members. Stewardship in symbiosis with all life on earth. This is the role envisioned for us.

As our world views are continually challenged by new information, and as we become more aware of the consequences of our collective actions, it becomes harder for us to ignore the quality of our surrounding environment. How we obtain the food we eat, the clothes we wear, our shelter, our means of transportation, and education for our children takes on greater meaning.

Indigenous peoples recognized that the relationship between humans, plants, animals and all life forms was sacred. They lived within a community that nurtured relationships, strengthened communications and created bonds between people and the natural world. Globalization is not synonymous with uniformity. We learn from nature that diversity is a precondition for stability.

Human beings are a part of a vast web of interconnected species and systems that fit together in intricate ways, enabling the whole system to continue. There are limits to how much our population can grow, and how much we can alter our surrounding environment, without causing changes that will reverberate throughout that web and jeopardize our own future.

Technological fixes and single solutions for single problems are not enough. Instead, what is required is a fundamental change in the way we meet our needs and a reassessment of what those needs really are. Ultimately, the question of conserving and protecting the World Wide Web of Life depends on asking ourselves simple but fundamental questions: How should we live? How much is enough? What way of life human beings ought to pursue?

We have to develop the ecological, holistic world view which connects us with the rest of Nature - both materially and spiritually. Religious traditions emphasize this connection. Our task should be to retrieve these basic symbols and doctrines within each tradition and translate them into clear prescription for public policy and behavior.

It is the job of governments to protect their citizens. But governments cannot do the job alone. We need every individual citizen to help ensure strong environmental protection. Joining together is not a matter of choice -- it is a necessity. We all breathe the same air, drink the same water, and work and play in the same environment. Let us use the occasion of the World Environment Day to remind every citizen, communities and the business and industry that "the Earth is in our hands". By joining together, we can take the common sense steps we need to take -- and be proud to pass along a safe, clean world to our children and our children's children.

Human Impact on the Earth

A theme in The Sacred Balance is that if, as a species, we continue on our present course we will do irreparable harm to the Earth. There are countless studies, reports, books, documentaries and websites describing human impacts in great detail. The sheer volume of the information can easily make one numb. So ... we thought we'd present them one at a time.

The number of species on Earth is being reduced by a rate 1,000 to 10,000 times higher than existed in pre-human times.

If members of a species are large (a rhinoceros) or considered beautiful (a spotted owl) then extinction or possible extinction may make the news. But there are species lost every day that don't make the news - many that we know nothing about.

Because no one knows how many species exist on Earth, the way scientists estimate how many species are lost is by doing a calculation that relates habitat area to the estimated number of species in that habitat. Here's what that calculation tells us (adapted from "Biophilia and the Conservation Ethic" by E. O. Wilson):

E. O. Wilson: "At the current removal rate of tropical rainforest (about 1. 8 percent each year) approximately 0.5 percent of the species are extirpated immediately or doomed to a much earlier extinction. If there are 10 million species in these habitats (a conservative estimate) the rate of loss may exceed 50,000 a year, 137 a day, 6 an hour. This rate is actually the minimum estimate, based on the species to area relation alone. It does not take into account extinction due to pollution, disturbances other than clear-cutting, or the introduction of exotic species."

"Most systematists with global experience believe that more than half the species of organisms on Earth live in the tropical rainforests. Other species-rich habitats, including coral reefs, river systems, lakes, and heathland, are under similar assault. When the final remnants of such habitats are destroyed in a region (the last of the ridges on a mountainside cleared, for example, or the last riffles flooded by a downstream dam) species are wiped out en masse. The first 90 percent reduction in the area of a habitat lowers the species number by one-half. The final 10 percent eliminates the second half."

"It is a guess (subjective but very defensible) that if the current rate of habitat alteration continues unchecked, 20 percent or more of the Earth's species will disappear or be consigned to early extinction during the next thirty years. From prehistory to the present time, humanity has probably already eliminated 10 or even 20 percent of the species. The number of bird species, for example, is down by an estimated 25 percent, from 12,000 to 9,000, with a disproportionate share of the losses occurring on islands. Most of the megafaunas (the largest mammals and birds) appear to have been destroyed in more remote parts of the world by the first wave of hunter-gatherers and agriculturists centuries ago. The diminution of plants and invertebrates is likely to have been much less, but studies of archaeological and other subfossil deposits are too few to make even a crude estimate."

"The human impact, from prehistory to the present time and projected into the next several decades, threatens to be the greatest extinction spasm since the end of the Mesozoic era 65 million years ago."
"Assume, for the sake of argument, that 10 percent of the world's species that existed just before the advent of humanity are already gone and that another 20 percent are destined to vanish quickly unless drastic action is taken. The fraction lost - and it will be a great deal no matter what action is taken - cannot be replaced by evolution in any period that has meaning for the human mind. The five previous major spasms of the past 550 million years, including the end-Mesozoic, each required about 10 million years of natural evolution to restore. What humanity is doing now in a single lifetime will impoverish our descendants for all time to come. Yet critics often respond, "So what? If only half the species survive, that is still a lot of biodiversity - is it not?"
