"It may be better for the Earth and humanity's future that economic collapse comes sooner rather than later, while more ecosystems and opportunities to return to nature's fold exist. Economic collapse will be deeply wrenching -- part Great Depression, part African famine. There will be starvation and civil strife, and a long period of suffering and turmoil. Many will be killed as balance returns to the Earth. Most people have forgotten how to grow food and that their identity is more than what they own. Yet there is some justice, in that those who have lived most lightly upon the land will have an easier time of it, even as those super-consumers living in massive cities finally learn where their food comes from and that ecology is the meaning of life. Economic collapse now means humanity and the Earth ultimately survive to prosper again. Human suffering -- already the norm for many, but hitting the currently materially affluent -- is inevitable given the degree to which the planet's carrying capacity has been exceeded. We are a couple decades at most away from societal strife of a much greater magnitude as the Earth's biosphere fails. Humanity can take the bitter medicine now, and recover while emerging better for it; or our total collapse can be a final, fatal death swoon."
"Americans assume that the process of democracy will allow us to "throw the bums out" in the 2008 election. Pause and think about human nature. Do people really change when to do so they could lose unlimited power? It's like the illusion of a battered wife thinking a pattern of behavior will change, it doesn't."
EVERYTHING POINTS TOWARD KUCINICH (January 18, 2008) http://stormglass.blog.com/2543266/
Someone recently threw out the suggestion that perhaps being blocked out of the debate in Nevada was actually good for Kucinich in that it revealed that his accusations of media cencorship are correct. He had been blocked from other debates and is being blocked from future debates as I write this, but there was a dramatic twist in Nevada. A lower court judge decided that Kucinich was entitled to debate and the State Supreme Court overruled that verdict about an hour before the debate was to begin. This dramatic twist is a perfect illustration of something much bigger and more consequential to the Kucinich phenomena than just the fact that the media censors the only candidate with real integrity. What it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt in my mind, or should I say what it disproves once and for all, is the media myth that everyone has swallowed whole for the last four years that Dennis Kucinich is somehow "unelectable".This is the only reason why the highest court in Nevada would risk it's entire reputation, not to mention NBC, just to keep one brave candidate out of the room, a man that supposedly doesn't even rank high enough to matter. So if he is so insignificant, the question looms, why not just let him debate. Sure that may not have been your first choice for perfectly warped reasons but once a judge tells you to let him debate and the public sees that, why then go to such lengths to make sure he doesn't win this little victory. I'm sure there are some executives who took Kucinich's legal challenge a bit personally but generally major corporations are extremely savvy about when to concede to public or legal pressure when is to it's own benefit. For NBC and the Nevada Supreme Court to expose themselves as being pretty much on par with the right wing news hacks on Fox, flagrantly flexing their muscle in the name of their own best interests then they really must be pretty desperate about something. What interests are at stake here, we have to ask ourselves. If Kucinich is so "unelectable" why not just concede graciously and make yourself look good in the process.I think we all know why. Because they know what nobody else knows. They know what even Kucinich's supporters often doubt. They know that the democratic leadership along with all other media organs of this country (and when I say all I mean pretty damn close) are conspiring desperately to keep Kucinich out of the public eye because they know, unequivocally that Kucinch would catch on like wildfire if they were not in such united opposition against him. 2008 Election Horror Fantasy - A MUST READ! ENTIRELY!! http://www.new-enlightenment.com/2008_election_primer.htm
The Jones family above is watching a horror fantasy. They are unaware that the election events on their television screen are total fantasy but that the horror is real. The mother and father were non-educated at the same non-school that Timmy and Suzie are now being non-educated. None of the four knows what is going on in the world and they have no interest in knowing. The "election" portrayed on the Jones's television screen is a complete fantasy. Both the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates have been chosen by a criminal gang and the outcome of the election has already been decided by that same pack of thugs. Most Americans are like the Jones family: having allowed themselves to be brainwashed into mindlessly believing that the "election" is a fair contest of the people's will. Because most Americans are happy believing in fantasies like "fair elections" and "war on terrorism," America has become a police state. CLIP MUCH More through http://www.hermes-press.com/
Hacking Democracy 1 of 9 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzPXer7946E
This cautionary documentary exposes the vulnerability of computers - which count approximately 80% of America's votes in county, state and federal elections - suggesting that if our votes aren't safe, then our democracy isn't safe either. The documentary exposes the dangers of voting machines used during America's mid term and presidential elections. Electronic voting machines count approximately 90% of America's votes in county, state and federal elections. The technology is also increasingly being used across the world, including in Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and Latin America. Filmed over three years this exposé follows the investigations of a team of citizen activists and hackers as they take on the electronic voting industry, targeting the Diebold corporation. "Hacking Democracy" uncovers incendiary evidence from the trash cans of Texas to the ballot boxes of Ohio, exposing secrecy, votes in the trash, hackable software and election officials rigging the presidential recount. Ultimately proving our votes can be stolen without a trace "Hacking Democracy" culminates in the famous 'Hursti Hack'; a duel between the Diebold voting machines and a computer hacker from Finland - with America's democracy at stake. The two Ohio election staff who feature in "Hacking Democracy" were sentenced on March 13th 2007 for rigging the 2004 presidential recount. Incriminating footage from the documentary was used in their court case as evidence. http://www.hackingdemocracy.com/ - Recommended by Barbara Peck (email@example.com) who wrote: "Required viewing - proof of massive institutionalized voter fraud."

But then, of course, the neocon corporate media, snugly in bed with the "efense" industry and long ago sold down the river by the CIA's Operation Mockingbird, has ignored the [recent]coming out of former Italian president Francesco Cossiga, who declared the attack was a CIA and Mossad operation. He directly questioned the official version of 9/11 in a session with Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda Yasuo and members of his Cabinet. Fujita is a member of the opposition party, Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ). He was elected to the House of Councillors in 2007. He is a former Member of the House of Representative and Former Vice Director General of the International Department of the Democratic Party of Japan. Fujita emphasized that there was never an official police investigation into the deaths of the 24 Japanese citizens who were killed on 9/11. He stated that many in the US doubt the official version of 9/11 and numerous individuals have collected evidence that contradicts the government's version, which can be seen on many websites. During his speech, an aide showed several larges photos of: - the Pentagon entry and exit hole and a scale overlay of a 757 - the flight path towards the Pentagon - the WTC Twin Towers exploding- the WTC 7 collapse - the early announcement of the collapse of WTC 7 by the BBC and CBS. Dozens in Texas town report seeing UFO (Jan 14, 2008) http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080114/ap_on_fe_st/odd_ufo_sightings_4
STEPHENVILLE, Texas - In this farming community where nightfall usually brings clear, starry skies, residents are abuzz over reported sightings of what many believe is a UFO.Several dozen people - including a pilot, county constable and business owners - insist they have seen a large silent object with bright lights flying low and fast. Some reported seeing fighter jets chasing it."People wonder what in the world it is because this is the Bible Belt, and everyone is afraid it's the end of times," said Steve Allen, a freight company owner and pilot who said the object he saw last week was a mile long and half a mile wide. "It was positively, absolutely nothing from these parts."While federal officials insist there's a logical explanation, locals swear that it was larger, quieter, faster and lower to the ground than an airplane. They also said the object's lights changed configuration, unlike those of a plane. People in several towns who reported seeing it over several weeks have offered similar descriptions of the object. (...) About 200 UFO sightings are reported each month, mostly in California, Colorado and Texas, according to the Mutual UFO Network, which plans to go to the 17,000-resident town of Stephenville to investigate. Fourteen percent of Americans polled last year by The Associated Press and Ipsos say they have seen a UFO. CLIP

Robert Fisk: Bloody reality bears no relation to the delusions of this President (16 January 2008) http://news.independent.co.uk/fisk/article3342174.ece
As a bomb explodes in Beirut and Israel kills 19 in Gaza raids, Bush takes his Middle East peace mission to Saudi Arabia (and signs off $20bn weapons deal with repressive regime) (...) Already by dusk last night, the US President's world was exploding in Beirut when a massive car bomb blew up next to a 4x4 vehicle carrying American embassy employees, killing four Lebanese and apparently badly wounding a US embassy driver. And while Mr Bush was relaxing in the Saudi royal ranch at Al Janadriyah, Israeli forces killed 19 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, most of them members of Hamas, one of them the son of Mahmoud Zahar, a leader of the movement. He later claimed that Israel would not have staged the attack on the day an Israeli was also killed by a Palestinian rocket if it had not been encouraged to do so by George Bush. The difference between reality and the dream-world of the US government could hardly have been more savagely illustrated. After promising the Palestinians a "sovereign and contiguous state" before the end of the year, and pledging "security" to Israel though not, Arabs noted, security for "Palestine" Mr Bush had arrived in the Gulf to terrify the kings and oligarchs of the oil-soaked kingdoms of the danger of Iranian aggression. As usual, he came armed with the usual American offers of vast weapons sales to protect these largely undemocratic and police state regimes from potentially the most powerful nation in the " axis of evil". It was a potent even weird example of the US President's perambulation of the Arab Middle East, a return to the "policy by fear" which Washington has regularly visited upon Gulf leaders. CLIP
1.2 million displaced Iraqis suffer hardship - Hardship aggravated by lack of basic services (Jan/16/2008) http://snipurl.com/1xl0p
GENEVA The plight of the 1.2 million Iraqis internally displaced since February 2006 has continued to worsen, aggravated by a lack of access to food rations, health care and basic services such as clean water, sanitation and electricity, a report by a global relief agency said.Population displacement within and from Iraq "remains one of the largest and most serious humanitarian crises in the world," the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a European-based intergovernmental organization, said in a report.More than 2 million Iraqis have taken refuge in neighboring Jordan and Syria. A total of 2.4 million have been displaced within the war-torn nation since 2003, including 1.2 million that were forced from homes since February 2006, when sectarian violence changed the scale of the uprooting."Although military operations, crime and general insecurity remain factors, sectarian violence became the primary driver for population displacement," said the report, which draws on a survey of 142,000 displaced families throughout the country. By religion and ethnicity. nearly 61 percent of the population displaced in 2007 are Shi'ite Arabs, 28.2 percent are Sunni Arabs, 3.6 percent are Christians, and 2.6 percent are Sunni Kurd, the study said. The survey found that only 22 percent of the internally displaced people had regular access to the government's public distribution of food rations, while another 22 percent said they had "no access at all." Despite the pressing humanitarian needs, the IOM report voiced concern that only 25 percent of agency's $85 million proposal to assist internally displaced people and other vulnerable groups in Iraq has been funded by donor countries. "We welcome the funding we have received from the donors including the U.S. which has contributed a significant amount to our appeal. But overall the response is a disappointing one, given the scale of the humanitarian crisis and the needs which are so clearly evident," said IOM chief Brunson McKinley, a former U.S. ambassador.
U.S. Stocks Post Steepest Drop Since July 2002; Citigroup Falls (Jan. 19) http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aflw_uFXmzEE&refer=home
(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks posted the steepest weekly drop since July 2002 after lower-than-estimated home construction, retail sales and manufacturing reinforced speculation that the economy is entering a recession. Intel Corp. led technology companies lower for the fourth straight week after the world's biggest chipmaker forecast sales that trailed estimates. Citigroup Inc., the largest U.S. bank by assets, plunged to the lowest since February 1999 after reporting the biggest loss in its 196-year history. Home construction fell 14 percent in December, concluding the worst year for the industry since 1980, the Commerce Department said. Separate government reports showing retail sales fell for the first time since June and manufacturing in the Philadelphia region slid to a six-year low heightened concern that the housing slowdown is infecting the broader economy. "It looks to me like we're already in a recession,'' said Jason Cooper, who helps manage about $2.5 billion at 1st Source Investment Advisors in South Bend, Indiana. Space Invaders: Five Million Aliens for Hillary by Greg Palast (January 10, 2008) http://www.gregpalast.com/space-invaders-five-million-aliens-for-hillary/
Will José Crow Voter ID Laws Pick Our President? -- State Representative Russell Pearce of Mesa Arizona has warned us:There is a massive effort under way to register illegal aliens in this country. How many? According to the Congressmans office, there are five million: Democrats, he says, who are not good Americans - theyre Mexicans! Really?! Holy Cow! The Senator has uncovered a conspiracy to flood the voter rolls with Brown Hordes whove swum the Rio Grande just for a chance to vote for Hillary Clinton?!Thank the Lord for vigilant citizens like Senator Pearce. His efforts, along with the work of other patriotic (Republican) politicians, successfully stopped 300,000 voters from obtaining ballots in 2004 - because these voters had brought the wrong ID to the polls. New ID laws in Arizona and half a dozen states blocked these voters at the polling-house door. Others with wrong IDs were handed what are called provisional ballots - which were then not counted. On Wednesday, the Republican majority on the US Supreme Court indicated it would vote to uphold these new voter ID requirements. And just in time. If not for these new ID laws, warns Senator Pearce and other Republicans across the nation, a dark wave of illegal aliens would vote again in our upcoming Presidential election. Or maybe not. Maybe there arent five million illegal voters for Hillary or Obama or Edwards. Maybe there are just five hundred. Maybe there are none.I called Senator Pearces office to get a couple of the names of these illegal voters. After all, it should be easy as pie to catch them: they have to give their names and addresses to register and vote. Odd thing, out of five million illegal registrants, the Senator, after a week of looking, couldnt provide me the name of one. Not one. CLIP
Information Control For Social Manipulation http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/InformationControl.html
The news and entertainment we consume, and thus our thoughts and opinions, are shaped not just by the media and entertainment corporations but by governments, their agencies and the military-industrial complex. -- The United States is the most media-saturated country in the world. We are bombarded daily with thousands upon thousands of images and sounds designed to get our attention, entertain, and inform us of everything from shoes to food to celebritydom to political ideology. Its been estimated that the average American is exposed to more than 3000 advertisements every day, but on top of that, there are the news programs, sitcoms, films, radio and other forms of media that we choose to consume. All of this works to shape our opinions of the world and a great deal of time, effort, and money is spent to guide our opinions down particular avenues. This used to be called "propaganda". Today, with the negative, Nazi-esque connotation which comes with that word, euphemisms such as misinformation, disinformation, image consulting, political consulting, news consulting, advertising, infomercials, public relations, damage control, and the art of spin have taken its place in the English lexicon, all but concealing its true nature and omnipresence. Russian Journal: HAARP Could Capsize Planet [magnetic poles only] (January 08, 2008) http://blog.wired.com/defense/2008/01/russian-journal.html
Just when you think you've heard all the possible far-out theories behind the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) in Alaska, leave it to the Russians to come up with one better. Forget mind control, the Russians think HAARP is a "geophysical weapon" that's gonna capsize the planet. HAARP, just by way of a reminder for those who don't obssessively follow its progress, is a military project that's supposed to study the ionosphere and "use it to enhance communications and surveillance systems for both civilian and defense purposes." In more recent years, the Pentagon has also expressed interest in using HAARP to mitigate the effects of high-altitude nuclear explosions. However, HAARP's use of an antenna array operating in the High Frequency (HF) range has also prompted tons and tons of other theories about its uses, ranging from weather control to altering human behavior.According to this article published in a Russian military journal (and helpfully translated by the CIA-funded Open Source Center), HAARP is the ultimate superweapon: Some Russian and foreign analysts argue that the US program is in effect a disguised idea of creation of an immensely powerful ray, a geophysical weapon, whose principle of operation is based on the use of means of influencing the processes which take place in the solid, liquid and gaseous layers of the Earth for military purposes.

He cites national security in aiming to override a judge's injunction aimed at protecting marine mammals off Southern California. An environmental group promises to fight his move. - President Bush on Wednesday moved to exempt Navy sonar training missions off Southern California from complying with key environmental laws, an effort designed to free the military from court-ordered restrictions aimed at protecting whales and dolphins. The president's directive was designed to short-circuit a long-running battle in which environmental groups have won court victories that frustrated the Navy's preparations for nine training missions over the next year, the first one set to begin next week. (...) The Navy asserts that it has 29 separate measures to protect marine mammals from harmful effects of mid-frequency active sonar, which has been linked to panicked behavior of marine mammals in more than a dozen places and mass strandings of dead and dying whales and dolphins in the Bahamas and Canary Islands. But Cooper, who in her rulings said she tried to balance environmental protections with national security, found that these protections were insufficient. Citing the Navy's own studies, she concluded that upcoming exercises off Southern California "will cause widespread harm to nearly 30 species of marine mammals, including five species of endangered whales and may cause permanent injury and death."

In a recent interview with ABC News, George W. Bush was asked about getting tougher with Saudi Arabia about the high price of oil. Our President said the following: "If they dont have a lot of additional oil to put on the market, it is hard to ask somebody to do something they may not be able to do." Perhaps my added emphasis will help you understand the magnitude of this statement. The sitting president of the United States of America, who recently admitted, America is addicted to oil, made a comment, after meeting with King Abdullha, that Saudi Arabia might not be able to raise oil production. Of course there are people, knowledge people who have been saying this for at least a few years, but here is our president saying it in an interview with a major news network. This must have thrown his handlers into an uproar. No doubt this points to an exciting year, because in terms of oil production as Saudi Arabia goes, so goes the world. You can watch the interview for yourself. If you dont believe the president or if perhaps you still think peak oil is a few decades or even just a few years away, I suggest this informative PDF from Matt Simmons, energy investment banker, which concisely presents the realization that global conventional oil production peaked in May of 2005. The Peak Oil Crisis: We Are Starting To Dim (17 January 2008) http://www.fcnp.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2395&Itemid=35
While waiting to see how the contest between a demand-killing recession and shrinking oil stockpiles plays out, it might be worthwhile to spend a little time reviewing the worlds electricity situation. If there is any form of energy that would be sorely missed by people who had once had it, electricity would be it. Private cars we could do without, but not our lights and appliances. Most of us here in America have been blessed to have an unlimited amount of electricity for all of our adult lives. There are very few left who can remember a time when it was not universally available. Although it has received scant coverage in the U.S. media, in many parts of the world, the electric grids are shutting down for long periods each day. In a few places the electricity is now off most of the time. Some of this is due to droughts which have reduced the hydroelectric generating capacity in many parts of the world. Some is due to the price of oil which has simply become too expensive to use in thermoelectric generating stations and in a few places the electricity is out or has been greatly reduced because of civil strife. The R3volution is Dead - Long Live the Revolution!!! by Edgar J. Steele (January 14, 2008) http://www.conspiracypenpal.com/rants/r3volution.htm
(...) I haven't given up on Ron Paul, but I admit to having been convinced by him that he cannot become America's President. It took a long time. I don't know how often I've heard him tell reporters or interviewers that his followers "have cured (his) skepticism." I wince each time, because I know he doesn't mean it. Too bad. Yesterday, Dr. Paul issued a statement that he would not challenge the obvious (my word, not his) vote fraud that took place in New Hampshire (and Iowa, for that matter). "I am convinced that vote fraud played no role in this result," said Dr. Paul. I'd like to think that simply was his diplomacy talking. Problem is, this is no time for diplomacy. CLIP

A look at Ron Paul's environmental platform and record - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul doesn't spend much time talking about the environment; when he does address the issue, it's usually to say that our land, air, and water would be in better shape if the government butted out and let the free-market, private-property system run its course. Nuclear cancer risk 'doubled' (10 Jan 2008) http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/society/health/nuclear%20cancer%20risk%20doubled/1300847
Leukaemia risk "doubled" for children who live near nuclear power stations - new German research. Just as Britain decides to build new nuclear power stations, new research, commissioned by the German government, reveals that children under five who live within 5 km of a nuclear power plant, have twice the risk of suffering from the blood cancer leukaemia. In Germany it has re-opened the hugely controversial issue of the health risks of nuclear power - which Germany is phasing out. In Britain, discussion of the health risks has largely been absent from the debate over new nuclear power stations, though it raged post-Chernobyl and in the late 1980s and early 1990s when cancer clusters were found around the village of Seascale in Cumbria, close to the Sellafield nuclear plant, and around the nuclear site at Dounreay in Scotland. Gorges Ain't Gorgeous: China's Three Gorges Dam plagued by environmental problems http://www.grist.org/news/daily/2007/08/30/1/
China's Three Gorges Dam got a lot of flak during construction for its environmental impact and for uprooting over 1 million people. A year after its completion, critics' concern about the world's largest hydroelectric project has only increased. The weight of the water behind the dam, along with frequent water-level changes, has begun to erode the Yangtze River shore in several spots, causing landslides. Shorelines downstream are disintegrating, bereft of silt blocked by the dam. Water freed of its silt is rushing faster downriver, damaging dikes and leading to worries that the dam will actually increase the flooding it was built to quell. Raw sewage and fertilizer are collecting in the dam-made 400-mile-long reservoir. Officials are developing landslide warnings, water-treatment systems, and riverbank reinforcement, but fear they may have to evacuate even more people. "We thought of all the possible issues," says one scientist who was involved in predicting the environmental effects of the project. "But the problems are all more serious than we expected."
A Thirst for Meat: Changes in diet, rising population may strain China's water supply http://sciencenews.org/articles/20080119/fob4.asp
China's rapid industrialization and increasing population, along with a growing dietary preference among its citizens for meat, are straining the country's water resources to the point where food imports will probably be needed to meet demand in coming decades.
FDA to Back Food From Cloned Animals (January 5, 2008) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/04/AR2008010403685.html
The Food and Drug Administration is set to announce as early as next week that meat and milk from cloned farm animals and their offspring can start making their way toward supermarket shelves. The decision would be a notable act of defiance against Congress, which last month passed appropriations legislation recommending that any such approval be delayed pending further studies. Moreover, the Senate version of the Farm bill ... contains stronger, binding language that would block FDA action on cloned food, probably for years. The FDA has hinted strongly in the past year that it is ready to lift its "voluntary moratorium" on the marketing of milk and meat from clones and their offspring, saying that the science led them to that decision. But public opinion has been negative on the issue, with some saying that not enough safety studies have been conducted and others concerned about the health of the clones, which are far more likely than ordinary farm animals to die early in life. Escalating Ice Loss Found in Antarctica (14 January 2008) http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/011408EA.shtml
Sheets melting in an area once thought to be unaffected by global warming. Climatic changes appear to be destabilizing vast ice sheets of western Antarctica that had previously seemed relatively protected from global warming, researchers reported yesterday, raising the prospect of faster sea-level rise than current estimates. While the overall loss is a tiny fraction of the miles-deep ice that covers much of Antarctica, scientists said the new finding is important because the continent holds about 90 percent of Earth's ice, and until now, large-scale ice loss there had been limited to the peninsula that juts out toward the tip of South America. In addition, researchers found that the rate of ice loss in the affected areas has accelerated over the past 10 years - as it has on most glaciers and ice sheets around the world. "Without doubt, Antarctica as a whole is now losing ice yearly, and each year it's losing more," said Eric Rignot, lead author of a paper published online in the journal Nature Geoscience. CLIP
Antarctica Lost More Ice in Last 10 Years: Study (January 15, 2008) http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/01/15/6395/
WASHINGTON - Antarctica lost billions of tons of ice over the last decade, contributing to the rising seas around the world, a climate researcher said on Monday. The ice melted from two particular parts of the southern continent, according to Eric Rignot and colleagues, who wrote about the phenomenon in the journal Nature Geoscience. Using satellites to monitor most of Antarcticas coastline, the scientists estimate that West Antarctica lost 132 billion tons of ice in 2006, compared to about 83 billion tons in 1996. The Antarctic Peninsula, which stretches toward South America, lost about 60 billion tons in 2006. CLIP
In Greenland, Ice and Instability (8 January 2008) http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/010808EB.shtml
(...) All of these changes have many glaciologists "a little nervous these days - shell-shocked," said Ted Scambos, the lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo., and a veteran of both Greenland and Antarctic studies. Some fear that the rise in seas in a warming world could be much greater than the upper estimate of about two feet in this century made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change last year. (Seas rose less than a foot in the 20th century.) The panel's assessment did not include factors known to contribute to ice flows but not understood well enough to estimate with confidence. All the panel could say was, "Larger values cannot be excluded." A scientific scramble is under way to clarify whether the erosion of the world's most vulnerable ice sheets, in Greenland and West Antarctica, can continue to accelerate. The effort involves field and satellite analyses and sifting for clues from past warm periods, including the last warm span between ice ages, which peaked about 125,000 years ago and had sea levels 12 to 16 feet higher than today's. Green apple not quite ripe? (16 January 2008) http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/green-apple-not-quite-ripe160108
(...) This time Steve is on the right path for a green Apple. The MacBook Air is a strong entry in the race to build a green PC. As a mercury and arsenic free laptop it exceeds European Standards (RoHS directive exemptions) and raises the bar for the rest of the industry. The BFR and PVC free printed wiring on the motherboard is a big step forward, but not a first. Sony achieved that last November with the Vaio notebook. The MacBook Air has less PVC and BFRs than other Mac computers, but it is not entirely free from those hazardous chemicals. Had it been it would have made Apple an ecological leader. With their product design on the right track Apple needs to make environmental leadership the theme of all its products - old and new. That means green design as standard right through the product line and a real global commitment to take back and recycling. We can almost taste that Green Apple, unfortunately its not ripe yet.
Time to Stop the Greenwashing (JANUARY 04, 2008) http://earthmeanders.blogspot.com/2008/01/time-to-stop-greenwashing.html
Global ecological sustainability depends upon identifying and acting upon ambitious, sufficient eco-policies now; and rejecting misleading, exploitative and inadequate reformist panderingThe Earth and all species including humans are threatened with imminent ecological ruin. You should be afraid, very afraid. Yet real hope remains that fundamental social change can avert looming failure of global ecosystems. The biggest current obstacle to such change is that now that everyone, every product and every business claims to be "green"; we have been diverted from urgent, adequate ecological change required to secure being. Many mainstream (and some "radical") environmentalists, most businesses and essentially all governments are greenwashing -- misleading the public regarding the environmental benefits of their practices, policies and products. Certified FSC logging destroys ancient forests, climate and water. Coal is unlikely to ever be clean as existing plants emit into the atmosphere, and sequestration is unproven. Biofuels hurt the environment, geo-engineering will destroy remaining natural processes, and buying more stuff is rarely good for the environment. It is time to stop the greenwashing. After two decades of successfully raising awareness regarding climate change, forest protection and other challenges to global ecological sustainability; increasingly my time is spent reacting to dangerous, insufficient responses that fail to address root causes of ecological decline, provide a false sense of action, and frequently consolidate and do more environmental harm. We can make green cars. But can we fill them up? (January 17 2008) http://blogs.motortrend.com/6227015/auto-shows/we-can-make-green-cars-but-can-we-fill-them-up/index.html
I've lost count of the times the past week I've been asked by a TV reporter whether all the eco-friendly cars and technologies on display at the Detroit show were real or just greenwash to massage public opinion while they went right on building gas-guzzlers. Oh, they're mostly real. They mostly work. All the automakers have to do now is figure out how to make them at a price we can afford. But there's a bigger problem. There's not much point having a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle (or even something far less esoteric, like a BMW with an internal-combustion engine that runs on hydrogen) if you can't get hydrogen in the fuel tank. As of late last year, there were just 122 hydrogen filling stations in the U.S (...) If it's the responsibility of automakers to produce vehicles that are significantly more fuel-efficient or that run on alternative fuels (which is what the 35-mpg CAFE law effectively means) we need answers to two key questions:1. Whose responsibility is it to ensure there are enough filling stations nationwide to handle all these ethanol, diesel, and hydrogen-fueled cars? 2. Who's going to ensure that we develop common standards for each alternative fuel, for the fuels themselves, filling-station hardware, and pump-to-vehicle connections? And not just across the U.S., but from country to county around the world? The logical answer is this is stuff only a government can do. The politicians in Washington passed the buck on reducing America's consumption of oil almost entirely onto the auto industry, rather than spread the responsibility around. But they're still going to have to spend lots of our tax dollars making sure there's a viable, large-scale infrastructure in place to support a number of the cars they've mandated automakers build by 2020. So even if you don't buy a "green" car over the next few years, one way or another, you're still going to be paying for it.
50 people who could save the planet (January 5 2008) http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/jan/05/activists.ethicalliving
Stranded polar bears, melting glaciers, dried-out rivers and flooding on a horrific scale - these were the iconic images of 2007. So who is most able to stop this destruction to our world? A Guardian panel, taking nominations from key environmental figures, met to compile a list of our ultimate green heroes - Past year ended with the incongruous image of 10,000 politicians, businessmen, activists and scientists from 190 countries emitting vast quantities of greenhouse gases as they flew home from Bali clutching the bare bones of a global agreement on climate change. The agreement was to keep on talking to try to reach a deal by 2010. It was a diplomatic triumph, achieved after rows and high dramas, but it leaves all nations a mighty hill to climb. There is no agreement on what emission cuts need to be made by when or by whom, and the US is still deeply reluctant to do anything. It is a roadmap with no signposts. Some were optimistic that a start had been made; some said that the earth's ecological situation was in a far more perilous state than had been thought. The iconic images of 2007 - polar bears stranded, glaciers melting in the Himalayas, forests coming down all over Africa and devastating floods and droughts from Bangladesh to Ghana - may be as nothing to what will happen if people do not take immediate action. But who are the people who can bring about change, the pioneers coming up with radical solutions? We can modify our lifestyles, but that will never be enough. Who are the politicians most able to force society and industry to do things differently? Where are the green shoots that will get us out of the global ecological mess? CLIP - MOST INTERESTING LIST!
He sounds alarm on polluted oceans (January 7, 2008) http://www.boston.com/news/science/articles/2008/01/07/he_sounds_alarm_on_polluted_oceans/
The first gift the whales gave Roger Payne was their song, which he in turn spread to the ears of the world. He's planning to do the same with their final gift to him, the data locked inside the skin and blubber samples he gathered from 986 sperm whales on a 5 1/2-year, round-the-world journey. His discovery, with a partner in the late 1960s, that humpback whales sing songs provided an ethereal soundtrack for the animal conservation movement, But the final gift is not going to be music to the ears. Because sitting inside those biopsy samples is the first overall baseline assessment of pollution in the world's oceans."What we've analyzed so far," Payne said, "is shocking. It's well beyond any degree of pollutants that I thought would exist."Payne, 72, the founder and president of the Lincoln-based Ocean Alliance, is getting ready for his Al Gore moment. Once all the samples have been analyzed - the nonprofit conservation advocacy group needs about $1 million dollars in additional funding to complete the job - Payne is going to make it his mission to spread another inconvenient truth."If we don't do something about ocean pollution," Payne said from the study of his hillside home in South Woodstock, Vt., "I think there's a very good chance that humanity will lose access to fish from the sea. And because seafood is the principal source of protein for over a billion people, you could easily argue that this is the largest public health crisis in the world." Yet the success of Gore and others in sounding the alarm on climate change has overshadowed many of the other potential disasters facing the planet. "Every time someone says 'the environment,' they think global warming," Payne said. Ocean pollution "is not even on people's radar." CLIP
Scientific Study Finds Fluoride Horror Stories Factual (January 15, 2008) http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/january2008/011508_fluoride_horror.htm
Industrial by-product consumed by millions of Americans lowers IQ, causes cancer - The establishment media will have to find a new tactic with which to ridicule those who oppose the fluoridation of water after a major new Scientific American report concluded that "Scientific attitudes toward fluoridation may be starting to shift" as new evidence emerges of the poison's link to disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland, as well as lowering IQ. "Today almost 60 percent of the U.S. population drinks fluoridated water, including residents of 46 of the nations 50 largest cities," reports Scientific American's Dan Fagin.
Fagin is an award-wining environmental reporter and Director of New York University's Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program. "Outside the U.S., fluoridation has spread to Canada, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand and a few other countries. (...) - 97% of western Europe has rejected fluoridated water due to the known health risks, however 10% of Britons drink it and the UK government is trying to fast track the fluoridation of the entire country's water supply.- In Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg fluoridation of water was rejected because it was classified as compulsive medication against the subject's will and therefore violated fundamental human rights.- In November of 2006, the American Dental Association (ADA) advised that parents should avoid giving babies fluoridated water.- Sources of fluoride include: fluoride dental products, fluoride pesticides, fluoridated pharmaceuticals, processed foods made with fluoridated water, and tea. Subject: Kenya needs us
Kenya still teeters on the brink of disaster today bullets are flying on the streets, with over 600 killed and 250,000 made homeless as government and opposition dispute the presidency. There's hope yet, as Kenyan civil society groups stand up for peace and justice -- but only dialogue and an independent review of the tainted election can end this crisis and prevent escalating violence.
The world can play a crucial role: by reinforcing the efforts of mediators like Kofi Annan, and refusing to recognize any government until it is legitimately established. 50,000 Avaaz members have already sent this message to our foreign ministers, and almost all have listened so far. But inside Kenya, hardline leaders are sowing conflict.
President Kibaki and opposition leader Odinga need to hear that international legitimacy will only come after a mediated resolution. To send this message, we're taking out a full page ad in The East African Standard, an influential Kenyan newspaper. The ad will list the number of messages we've sent to our governments - can we double its strength by sending 100,000 messages this week before the ad runs? Click below to see the ad, send your message and spread the word:
Kenya depends on international tourism, aid and trade. With both Odinga and Kibaki accepting Kofi Annan's mediation mission, there may be light at the end of the tunnel. It's not too late to help Kenya back from the brink -- send your message, spread the word today.

PS - Here are some links to the latest news on Kenya -
High up in the mountains of the northern Rift Valley is the village of Kiambaa, a place of maize farms and mud huts where the air is so light and pure, it is said to hold the secret of Kenya's world-beating distance runners, who train in the surrounding hills. On New Year's Day, a mob of several hundred people armed with machetes, clubs and bows and arrows surrounded Kiambaa's tiny tin-roofed church, where up to 200 men, women and children were huddled. The mob freed those who gave up mobile phones or money, raped the women, then closed the doors on the rest, heaped mattresses and dry maize leaves against the entrances and set them alight. The Kenyan Red Cross pulled 17 bodies from the ruins. Survivors put the death toll at 35.
At least one body, that of a young man called James, lay in a nearby field, where he collapsed after running out of the church with his hair and face on fire. Daniel Mwangi Nganga, 37, whose disabled brother was hacked to death in the family home as the crowd approached the church, recognized the killers as friends and neighbors. "We went to school together," he says. "They used to come to our homes. We prayed together." He searched for an explanation. "We just don't know what happened."
It wasn't supposed to happen in Kenya. Until a few weeks ago, this country of 37 million was a poster nation of the African renaissance, a term adopted by South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki to describe the continent's economic and political resurgence in recent years. After three decades beset by genocide, famine, AIDS and wars as obscure as they were endless, much of Africa is thriving. Soaring demand for resources like oil, timber and minerals--especially from China--has pushed annual economic growth for sub-Saharan Africa to more than 5% for four years running and is inching toward 7%, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Conspicuous activism by Western politicians, philanthropists and rock stars has helped relieve the continent's debts and deliver billions in development aid. There is less war and more democracy. Peace reigns in the old battlegrounds of Angola, the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mozambique, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. Almost all African countries have held multiparty elections in the past 15 years.
Kenya is one of the stars of this revival: it has held elections regularly since independence in 1963, its economy grew 6.4% in 2007, and it has been a stable exception to turmoil in East Africa. But the outbreak of violence there following last month's presidential elections threatens that progress. A potential implosion in Kenya is especially worrying to the U.S. because the White House sees it as a frontline state in the war on terrorism, a bulwark against its volatile, jihadi-infested neighbor Somalia. Terrorists have occasionally slipped across Kenya's border, as in 1998, when al-Qaeda simultaneously bombed the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, another neighbor. In 2007 the Bush Administration gave the government of President Mwai Kibaki about $1 billion in military and other aid. And there are special-operations soldiers based in Kenya at Manda Bay, on the coast just south of Somalia. The instability in Kenya has so alarmed the Administration that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reached out for help to an unlikely ally: Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama, whose father was from western Kenya and who has relatives near the city of Kisumu, the scene of some of the worst violence. Obama recorded a message, aired on the Voice of America, calling for calm. On Jan. 3, the day of the Iowa caucuses, he spoke with South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who had flown to Nairobi, the capital, to see if he could negotiate a peace. In the days since his Iowa victory, Obama has had near daily conversations with the U.S. ambassador in Nairobi, Michael Ranneberger, or with Kenya's opposition leader, Raila Odinga. Obama was trying to reach Kibaki as well.
Whether Kenya can be pulled back from the brink will reveal much about Africa's future. The nation embodies the best and worst of the continent--its vitality and economic potential but also its poverty, corruption and tribalism. So long as those conditions persist, crises like the one afflicting Kenya will continue to haunt Africa, stunting its growth and hurting its people. The outcome in Kenya may well determine whether Africa's renaissance sustains itself--or turns into another nightmare.
Roots of the Rage
The psychology of the bloodletting that has killed more than 500 Kenyans and forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes may remain a mystery. Other questions are easier to answer. The immediate cause? A civilian coup by Kibaki, following a close race with challenger Odinga in the Dec. 27 general election. Three days after the vote, on live television, paramilitary police stormed the Kenyatta International Conference Center, where the vote was being counted and Odinga had a substantial lead. Minutes later, the head of the election commission declared Kibaki the winner. Kibaki was sworn in later the same day. That decision fanned simmering resentment against Kibaki's tribe, the Kikuyu, the largest of Kenya's 42 tribes. Though Kikuyus make up only 22% of the population, they dominate government and business. A 2005 report by the Society for International Development, a civil-society monitoring group, catalogued how Kibaki had packed his Cabinet, state corporations, the judiciary and provincial administrations with his tribesmen. The tribal animosities have been festering at least since 1963, when British colonial farmers sold their properties to wealthy Kikuyus, allowing them to encroach on the ancestral land of Luos, Kalenjins and others in the Rift Valley. Some blame also goes to the father of the nation, Jomo Kenyatta, a Kikuyu who founded the ruling Kikuyu cabal.
In Nairobi the epicenter of the violence was Africa's largest slum, Kibera, where a million people live in tin shacks and clapboard huts--without sewerage, hospitals or jobs--a five-minute drive from some of the city's most luxurious homes. Richard Dowden, director of the Royal African Society in London, describes Kenya's poor as the "explosive dispossessed," ready to erupt into violence.
They did. Starting on New Year's Eve, tens of thousands of Kalenjin and Luo tribesmen tore through the Kikuyu sections of Kibera, mirroring violence across the country. Few seemed to care whether Kibaki and his tribe would fight back. "If there's civil war, it is the Kikuyus who will lose," says Titus Odiambo, a Luo fish trader. "It's their buildings that will burn. We don't have anything at stake." Some Kikuyu gangs struck back, but tens of thousands simply fled to the central highlands, where they are the majority tribe.
After a week of violence, Kibaki and Odinga came under heavy international pressure--and intensive lobbying by African leaders like Tutu and Ghanaian President John Kufuor and by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer--to reach some sort of compromise. But the question of who would rule was unresolved, leaving many Kenyans worried that the furies unleashed by the stolen election would lurk close to the surface, ready to break out at any time.
As Goes Kenya ...
What makes the unrest in Kenya most alarming is that its root causes are maladies that still plague other, less stable African states. The first is poverty. Despite Kenya's overall economic growth, 58% of its people are poor (defined as living on $2 or less a day). U.N. studies show that the gap between rich and poor is wider in Africa than anywhere else in the world. Despite the continent's recent economic growth, the number of its poor grew from 288 million in 1981 to 516 million in 2001.
The second malady is corruption. Kenya ranks eighth from the bottom on the list of the world's most corrupt countries, compiled by the watchdog group Transparency International. Kibaki's government and that of his predecessor Daniel arap Moi have been dogged by allegations of dirty deals running into hundreds of millions of dollars. Kibaki's former anti-corruption czar John Githongo went into self-imposed exile in Britain in 2005 after he became disillusioned by the President's lack of commitment to fighting graft and faced death threats. The government, he tells TIME, had "abandoned promises to equitably share power and economic opportunity, reform the constitution and fight corruption." Fixing the election result, he says, was "like throwing a match into a fuel drum."
As in Kenya, so in Africa's other powers. Africa is the also the world's most corrupt continent, with 36 out of 52 countries afflicted by rampant graft. In Nigeria the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says the country's rulers stole $400 billion from 1960 to 1999. In South Africa barely a week goes by without a new corruption scandal among the business and political élite. A week after he was elected leader of the ruling African National Congress, Jacob Zuma was indicted on one charge of racketeering, one of money laundering, two of corruption and 12 of fraud in connection with bribes paid by a French arms company. (He denies all the charges.)
Finally, Africa's democratic institutions remain weak. Like Kibaki, many African leaders have a hard time accepting an unfavorable verdict from the electorate and walking away from office. "Democracy in Africa is not what is understood in the West," says Catholic bishop Cornelius Korir, whose cathedral in the town of Eldoret, north of Kiambaa, has become a refugee camp for 9,000 Kikuyus. "Since their wealth depends on power, our leaders are never ready to admit defeat." Incumbents like Kibaki, Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe and Uganda's Yoweri Museveni are among those who tried to alter their country's constitutions--some successfully--to cling to power. African voters are to some extent complicit in the undermining of democracy. When given an opportunity to vote out one corrupt leader, they often elect another, hoping he will be more generous with his ill-gotten gains.
Reason for Hope
So what can be done--for the people of Kenya and their 788 million fellow sub-Saharan Africans? For the West, part of the answer lies in holding African governments accountable for the graft and misrule that sow popular disgruntlement. The West largely contents itself with the appearance of democracy in Africa, not the reality, and gives billions of dollars in aid to corrupt governments. "The World Bank runs around establishing anti-corruption commissions," says Joel Barkan, a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington who was in Kenya for the vote. "They have been singularly ineffective." In Kenya the IMF and the World Bank suspended aid in 2006 but later resumed it. Threats to withdraw U.S. and other aid appear to have persuaded Kibaki to offer to share power with Odinga.
Ultimately, the emergence of a more peaceful, prosperous Africa depends on Africans themselves. That provides the strongest case for optimism. Some of Africa's most thriving states are places that recently seemed beyond hope. Rwanda, where tribal violence escalated into genocide in 1994, is reviving with relatively little corruption and subsiding tribalism. The IMF expects Liberia, shattered by civil war from 1989 to 1996 and again from 1999 to 2003, to post economic growth of 13.3% this year. There is hope for Kenya too. After all, the majority of Kenyans chose not to join in the tribal violence. Many civil-society institutions are strong and cut across tribal lines. Journalists, church leaders, women's groups, lawyers, tourist operators and even some politicians have united to condemn both the mobs and Kibaki, calling for an end to the killing and for the President to quit.
Still, memories of Kenya's unhappy New Year's Day won't fade easily. On Jan. 2 in Mathare, another Nairobi slum, a mob of people torched a gas station, burned three buses and two jeeps and slashed a Kikuyu man in the head with a machete. They chased another down a narrow mud alley and, when he slipped, beat him to death with rocks, then stole his wallet and shoes. There was nothing on the body to identify him, no one in the area knew him, and within hours he joined hundreds of corpses at mortuaries across Kenya, awaiting claim. Unknown. But not forgotten.
Kenya's opposition says to resume protests (January 19, 2008) http://www.nationalpost.com/news/world/story.html?id=d872d019-0cd1-4be6-8c8e-e15569befb4d&k=63109
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya's opposition on Saturday said it would resume protests next week over a disputed election, just having finished three days of demonstrations in which at least 23 died. The decision came as a reversal after opposition leader Raila Odinga on Friday said his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) would take its fight off the streets and use other channels, including talks with African leaders and economic boycotts.About 650 people have been killed since President Mwai Kibaki won a disputed December 27 election, mostly in police action against banned protests and attacks on tribes seen as backing him. Human rights groups have decried both types of killing. CLIP

The opposition and human rights groups blame Kenyan police for most of the killing during the protests, including the deaths of schoolchildren in Nairobi and the western city of Kisumu, heart of the opposition. In Kibera, scene of the worst violence on Friday, police killed a 15-year-old girl who looked out her door as they fired outside. Her father told Reuters the officer aimed at her. Both of Kenya's main newspapers in editorials on Saturday blasted police conduct. Note from Jean: After I sent out my last compilation, a long-time ERN subscriber and friend warned be about including anything coming from Lyndon LaRouche and his Executive Intelligence Review. So in case you'd like to find out who this man is and why his views should not be featured in my compilations, you may review his Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyndon_LaRouche and read the following summary prepared by my friend, which corresponds in many respects to his Wikipedia entry:
The LaRouche network and their affiliates have their contemporary roots in the late 1960s left/progressive movement in the USA and Europe. In his early days, LaRouche used the name Lynn Marcus sort of a twist on Lenin and Marx. His followers used verbal and physical violence to intimidate and break up public gatherings of various left-wing organizations. Their favorite tools were fists, feet, clubs, metal pipes, and numchuks. What appeared to be simply a fanatical splinter group from the left-socialist movement actually functioned as provocateurs and informants. They would record names and of other info of meeting attendees, just as the police agents were doing. They created a group called the National Caucus of Labor Committees to create an impression that would appeal to progressive working class, unionists, and of intellectual leftists who were focused on a Marxist-Leninist model in the USA. At the time, most progressives saw no real rhyme or reason (ideologically) for their actions. Of course it is clear that it was to partly intimidate and interfere with a movement that TPTB at the time saw as a potentially dangerous revolutionary left movement with international networks. It was also to provide a series of organizational laboratories in which individuals could be recruited and their minds controlled for what would be many nefarious purposes.
LaRouche was a prodigious writer and used intimidation by massive verbiage to create an impression of mastery. He also could be a fanatical orator and is a wanna-be megalomaniac and self-appointed saviour of humanity. Taking off from early research by the left of the military-industrial-complex (now we call it TPTB), LaRouche developed various fronts for himself. Again, this was based on the power of ink on paper and whatever sources of funding he had. He also had no compunction about making up boards of advisors by simply including the names of various influential people to his letterheads. To read the volume of material his groups put out, one would think that his advisors includes Noam Chomsky, Edward Teller, and other such notables from a wide spectrum.
He created a fusion energy publication that promoted plutonium and other fusion technologies, invoking the power of Tellers name to get the interest of (and high $ subscriptions) from well-placed executives in government and business, including intelligence agencies. He did the same with economic data. One of these publications is still around, Executive Intelligence Review aimed at CEOs and other organizational leaders. This also produced a curious network of influentials and new sources of money. While not proven, I also suspect a close link with worldreports.org (regardless of their formal relationship, they function as an allied entity and spew similar mixture of facts and dis-info spins).
His people were like the Moonies at every major airport and public building with card table, magazines, and the collecting cup. He maintains a residence in an area of Virginia that is headquarters for all manner of government operatives from the banal to the secret spooks. He has a network in Europe as well as the USA. His modus operandi has been one of the opportunist, seizing upon whatever is a current rising themes with emotional energy, promoting themselves as leaders and truthsayers, and thus carving our a position in peoples thoughts. This method creates, out of nothing, the appearances of legitimacy and gravitas.
Now that the economy is crashing, no doubt his Schiller Institute and economic reports will be self-promoting itself as the only world economic saviour. They are very good at using the WWW and in making sure they show up a as oft-cited source of course it is only themselves quoting themselves, but it pushes their rubbish to the top of the search engines. All in all, like most disinformation sources, there is a mixture of verifiable facts, leaps in logic, and speculations and fantasy all spun into a complex enough presentation, that most people who would take the time to read it would not be likely to check all sources or assumptions.
He has run for US president many times and has paid for (expensive) 30 and 60 minute television specials infomercials for himself. His networks of people have brought in enough money to leverage with US public elections funds thus he has doubled his money and so could afford such lavish communications escapades. Of course he is a vain and self-absorbed person to do all this. His cult has recently been accused in the death of a young man who sought to break away from them. They have a history that parallels the early rise of Hitler in Germany. Only as a parody though, not a real rise to power.
Today, he and his bizarre cult serve as a dis-info source and an arms-length back door for TPTB to various influential individuals who may not be sufficiently at the top of TPTB food chain to be included directly. Today many people will be looking for answers from new sources as the familiar social, economic, political matrix falls apart. There are many opportunists out there who are not only working for their own self-aggrandizement, but who also have some pretty awful dark alliances and paymasters. I keep an eye out now for these sort of characters since a breakdown in economy and government will open the doors to all manner of bad seeds who would quickly be in a position of important influence and they would then parlay into a power base for themselves.

BREAKING NEWS - Cheney's Impeachment: Wexler Delivers Names to Congress
Congressman Robert Wexler email@example.com"> wrote:
Last night, I took to the floor of the House of Representatives and outlined our case as to why this Congress must hold immediate hearings on Rep. Kucinich's Articles of Impeachment.
I didn't do it alone: I was armed with nearly 200,000 signatures of support from you and so many others. Please watch the video of this speech and forward it to as many people as possible. I've posted it on the front page of www.WexlerWantsHearings.com
This morning, I delivered letters to all of my colleagues in the House of Representatives, urging them to support Cheney Impeachment Hearings. You can read a copy of both the letter to my colleagues as well as the letter to Chairman Conyers I am asking them to sign at: http://www.wexlerforcongress.com/news.asp?ItemID=230
Additionally, I have delivered to my colleagues in the Judiciary Committee a list of names who have signed up at www.WexlerWantsHearings.com. We now have almost 200,000 patriotic Americans dedicated to this cause.
We are beginning to make some progress. I have urged the Democratic Leadership to enforce the subpoenas being ignored by Harriet Miers and White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten by holding them in contempt of Congress.
This fight is not over. You must continue the pressure on your representatives and the media, or Congress will take no notice. That would be a historic mistake one we must prevent Congress from making.
We stand at a critical juncture in our efforts. Forget all of those arguments that it is too late or that we have run out of time. You can't run the clock out on our Constitution. Those of us dedicated to this fight Rep. Dennis Kucinich, the online community, and millions of patriotic Americans will keep the pressure on.
I will be furiously lobbying my fellow members of Congress to get behind these efforts and sign onto my letter to Chairman Conyers.
Please continue to spread the word and help deliver accountability to the corrupt Bush-Cheney administration.

Subject: America's Madness to Trust Honest Election
Date: 17 Jan 2008
Could a meditation be called for with a focus on a diplomatic solution with Iran occurring during the January 20th to February 12th period that John Hogue refers to below?
I was moved to write up the following because: I follow the news; just read Naomi Wolf's The End of America; have known since the 2004 election that we had seen the last honest national election in the US; because a probable false flag, martial law, expanded war with Bush as dictator is a plausible, probable reality likely to occur. I often don't get the details of how my knowing comes about and a number of people are also "seeing" what my "knowing" is telling a number of us.
Naomi Wolf lays out how the 10 steps to a fascist state are now in place and a "paper coup" could achieve the same end result. (Posted on my blog titled "America's Madness to Expect Honest Election 2008 @ http://www.tmgandhi.blogspot.com)
I just received John Hogue's prognostication on a coming war with Iran distilled from his 30 years of studying and writing about Nostradamus. http://www.hogueprophecy.com probably has the January 15, 2008 alert.
(With attribution I'm posting his article, with the following clip from it pasted in at the front of the article, on my blog.)
"Inside the White House and Pentagon heated debates are occurring to bomb Iran or forget it, jump or scrap the Iranian air strike plan are going on with unprecedented intensity. This is because Mars will retreat backwards over its natal position in the birth chart of the United States, which is 21 degrees Gemini, from 20 January to 12 February 2008. This is the period where it is possible our prayers and meditations for peace might sway the hearts of those within halls of power who might put their trust one last time on a last minute diplomatic solution with Iran." The plan will be ready for final approval in early February. The attack could come as soon as early March or as late as June 2008."
Americans assume that the process of democracy will allow us to "throw the bums out" in the 2008 election. Pause and think about human nature. Do people really change when to do so they could lose unlimited power? It's like the illusion of a battered wife thinking a pattern of behavior will change, it doesn't.
It is but common sense to assume that leaders who are willing to:
Abuse signing statements making Congress advisory only, ignoring laws and;
With the President making laws for others with himself above the law;
Withhold information from Congress and ignoring subpoenas of White House staff;
Make secret decisions and classify them above Top Secret;

Keeping major parts of PATRIOT Act I and II classified as Above Top Secret;

Ignore that fifteen of nineteen 9-11 terrorist were Saudi Arabians;
Use fake evidence to justify pre-emptive wars; violating international treaties;
Give advance weapons to known Islamic fundamentalist States since the 1980s;

Married the Church and state in every Federal department especially the White House;
Appointed loyal Republicans against regulatory agencies to be in charge of the agencies;
Replaced US attorneys with loyal, dedicated Republicans blind to election fraud;
Redacted the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and Habeas Corpus;
Put legal infrastructures in place for a "paper coup d'etat" more likely to happen than not;
Pushed through Defense Authorization Act of 2007 that gives a dictator legal status by canceling the Posse Comitates Act National Guard units under Presidential command when Section 333 is invoked to declare martial law, take over Guards, invoking "Decider's" dictatorial power over all local, state and tribal governments when (not if) "Public order" has been lost, a national epidemic disaster, serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or "other conditions". Written about in: a New York Times Editorial: Beyond actual insurrection, the President may now: Use military troops or a private army as a domestic police force in response to a natural disaster, disease out-break, terrorist attach or any "other condition."
I recorded Bush saying in 2002, "it would be easier to be a dictator with a dictatorship".
Excessive absolute power is certain to corrupt. It always has.

The Hormuz Hoax Who almost started World War III? (January 18, 2008) http://antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=12230
Following up on the alleged incident in the Strait of Hormuz with those five Iranian speedboats, remember that radioed threat supposedly coming from the Iranian side? Now they're blaming it on are you ready for this? "the Filipino Monkey," some crazy guy (or guys) whose obscene remarks have come crackling over ship radios in the area for years. Notice how quickly the official story is changing. First the transmission was a threat coming from the Iranians: now they're "unsure." This is contrary to the President's characterization of what occurred, and the Pentagon's video presentation of a threat emanating from the speedboats: the allegedly "aggressive" actions of the Iranians are underscored by an audio overlay in which a voice interpolates "I am coming to you, you will explode in a few minutes."The Iranians are calling the US video a fabrication, and it sure does look like that. (...) This narrative depends on the authenticity of the Monkey who may or may not be more than one person but we have no proof of that , and every reason to disbelieve it. Whoever told the Americans that they were going to explode "in a few minutes" was certainly monitoring the scene at sea, perhaps in sight of the encounter: in any case, the voice did not sound Iranian, according to Farsi speakers interviewed by the Washington Post. "Some have even said the voice sounds more like Borat than a real Iranian," quips Editor and Publisher. Gee, I wonder if they hired an actor to do the voiceover. No one is saying that the US government, or some subterranean branch of it perhaps a "rogue" faction, as in Iran-Contra is responsible for what happened in the Strait of Hormuz, where a "misunderstanding" almost sparked World War III. However, it's just possible given our government's dismal record in this regard that we'll be talking about the Hormuz Hoax, years from now, when the history of this decade of deception is written.
Journalist: Pentagon Fabricated "Non Event" Iranian "Provocation" (Jan 16, 2008) http://www.infowars.net/articles/january2008/160108Pentagon.htm
Echoes of faked Gulf of Tonkin incident as Pentagon distortions exposed - A respected American Journalist has accused a Pentagon spokesman of falsifying events surrounding the recent encounter between Iranian patrol boats and a US navy vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, which was eventually labeled a "provocation" by the White House. (...) Porter also spoke to a Pentagon consultant who asked not to be identified who told him that many officers have experienced similar encounters with small Iranian boats throughout the 1990s, and that such incidents are "just not a major threat to the US Navy by any stretch of the imagination". These revelations show just how easy it is for a non event to be hyped to serve an agenda and how the mainstream media is eager to swallow whole whatever the government feeds them. The event mirrors that of the August 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, where an attack on US warships by North Vietnamese PT Boats, was cited by President Johnson as a legitimate provocation mandating U.S. escalation in Vietnam. However Tonkin was revealed as a staged charade that never took place. Declassified LBJ presidential tapes featured discussions on how to spin the non-event to escalate it as justification for air strikes. In addition, the NSA faked intelligence data to make it appear as if two US ships had been lost. This information was again reiterated in a report released last week.

How the Pentagon Planted a False Story (16 January 2008) http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/011608S.shtml

CLIP
The Iran Fixation - How the American Media Enables Bush (January 16, 2008) http://www.counterpunch.org/khan01162008.html
President George Bush has a few months left in office. Many analysts have believed for some time now that before he retires from that position, he will have orchestrated an attack either against Syria or Iran. Increasingly, it seems that his fixation is with Iran. After much was made by the Bush administration about Iran's covert nuclear program, recently there was acknowledgment that many of those fears may have been over-exaggerated or even misplaced. Yet no one from the administration was taken to task for spreading such sinister misinformation. More disturbingly, there was no substantive criticism from the American media either. To the contrary, US media has increasingly become a mouthpiece of the Bush administration, perpetuating and ventilating the fears which prevent a population from thinking rationally about important issues. (...) Once again, it was extremely disappointing that the American media did not question or criticize the US Navy and government's very dubious role in this very serious matter. Even after the Iranians released their tape and it was plainly clear that the voice that had threatened an explosion did not come from the Iranian patrols and most likely had been recorded later on, American media preferred to hush up the incident by attributing it to another ship in the area or a transmitter on land. Had this happened in Pakistan, I could not help but think, everyone would have been talking about the government duping its people into a war. So perhaps it is the Pakistani in me that never rules out a conspiracy theory. But what would have happened if the Iranians sat tight and did not offer their version? What will happen in months to come? Will the Bush administration continue to find excuses to throw America into another unjustifiable war? Will the American media just sit on the sidelines and watch while that happens? Is their obligation to the people of the United States or to the Bush administration?
Toward Militarism, War, Empire, Caskets, and Bankruptcy http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article19070.htm
(...) The incident in the Gulf of Tonkin - excuse me, Gulf of Hormuz - this past week confirms how easy it is for an American ruler to send the entire nation into war, especially given that he is now permitted to ignore the constitutional provision requiring a congressional declaration of war. If the captains of those U.S. battleships and destroyers had blown those Iranian speedboats out of the water, one can already hear Bush and Cheney proclaiming, "We've been attacked! We've been attacked!
Given widespread failure to pursue policies sufficient to reverse deterioration of the biosphere and avoid ecological collapse, the best we can hope for may be that the growth- based economic system crashes sooner rather than later
Humanity and the Earth are faced with an enormous conundrum -- sufficient climate policies enjoy political support only in times of rapid economic growth. Yet this growth is the primary factor driving greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental ills. The growth machine has pushed the planet well beyond its ecological carrying capacity, and unless constrained, can only lead to human extinction and an end to complex life.
With every economic downturn, like the one now looming in the United States, it becomes more difficult and less likely that policy sufficient to ensure global ecological sustainability will be embraced. This essay explores the possibility that from a biocentric viewpoint of needs for long-term global ecological, economic and social sustainability; it would be better for the economic collapse to come now rather than later.
Economic growth is a deadly disease upon the Earth, with capitalism as its most virulent strain. Throw-away consumption and explosive population growth are made possible by using up fossil fuels and destroying ecosystems. Holiday shopping numbers are covered by media in the same breath as Arctic ice melt, ignoring their deep connection. Exponential economic growth destroys ecosystems and pushes the biosphere closer to failure.
Humanity has proven itself unwilling and unable to address climate change and other environmental threats with necessary haste and ambition. Action on coal, forests, population, renewable energy and emission reductions could be taken now at net benefit to the economy. Yet, the losers -- primarily fossil fuel industries and their bought oligarchy -- successfully resist futures not dependent upon their deadly products.
Perpetual economic growth, and necessary climate and other ecological policies, are fundamentally incompatible. Global ecological sustainability depends critically upon establishing a steady state economy, whereby production is right-sized to not diminish natural capital. Whole industries like coal and natural forest logging will be eliminated even as new opportunities emerge in solar energy and environmental restoration.
This critical transition to both economic and ecological sustainability is simply not happening on any scale. The challenge is how to carry out necessary environmental policies even as economic growth ends and consumption plunges. The natural response is going to be liquidation of even more life- giving ecosystems, and jettisoning of climate policies, to vainly try to maintain high growth and personal consumption.
We know that humanity must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% over coming decades. How will this and other necessary climate mitigation strategies be maintained during years of economic downturns, resource wars, reasonable demands for equitable consumption, and frankly, the weather being more pleasant in some places? If efforts to reduce emissions and move to a steady state economy fail; the collapse of ecological, economic and social systems is assured.
Bright greens take the continued existence of a habitable Earth with viable, sustainable populations of all species including humans as the ultimate truth and the meaning of life. Whether this is possible in a time of economic collapse is crucially dependent upon whether enough ecosystems and resources remain post collapse to allow humanity to recover and reconstitute sustainable, relocalized societies.
It may be better for the Earth and humanity's future that economic collapse comes sooner rather than later, while more ecosystems and opportunities to return to nature's fold exist.
Humanity can take the bitter medicine now, and recover while emerging better for it; or our total collapse can be a final, fatal death swoon.
A successful revolutionary response to imminent global ecosystem collapse would focus upon bringing down the Earth's industrial economy now. As society continues to fail miserably to implement necessary changes to allow creation to continue, maybe the best strategy to achieve global ecological sustainability is economic sabotage to hasten the day. It is more fragile than it looks.
Humanity is a marvelous creation. Yet her current dilemma is unprecedented. It is not yet known whether she is able to adapt, at some expense to her comfort and short-term well- being, to ensure survival. If she can, all futures of economic, social and ecological collapse can be avoided. If not it is better from a long-term biocentric viewpoint that the economic growth machine collapse now, bringing forth the necessary change, and offering hope for a planetary and human revival.
I wish no harm to anyone, and want desperately to avoid these prophesies foretold by ecological science. I speak for the Earth, for despite being the giver of life, her natural voice remains largely unheard over the tumult of the end of being.
WASHINGTON - Deforestation of the Amazon has surged in recent months and is likely to rise in 2008 for the first time in four years, a senior Brazilian government scientist said on Wednesday.
The rise raises questions over Brazil's assertion that its environmental policies are effectively protecting the world's biggest rain forest, whose destruction is a major source of carbon emissions that drive global warming.
"I think the last four months is a big concern for the government and now they are sending people to do more law enforcement," Carlos Nobre, a scientist with Brazil's National Institute for Space Research, told a seminar in Washington.
"But I can tell you that it (deforestation) is going to be much higher than 2007."
Nobre, whose government agency monitors the Amazon and gathers data, said that 2,300 square miles (6,000 square km) of forest had been lost in the past four months.
That compares with an estimated 3,700 square miles (9,600 square km) in the 12 months ended July 31, which Brazil officials hailed as the lowest deforestation rate since the 1970s.
Brazil's government has said that policies such as more controls on illegal logging and better certification of land ownership were reducing the deforestation that has destroyed about a fifth of the forest -- an area bigger than France -- since the 1970s.
But environmental groups have warned that rising global commodity prices are likely to fuel more clearing of land for farms, as occurred in 2004 when Brazil recorded the highest deforestation rate of more than 10,400 square miles (27,000 square km ).
LAND USE CHANGES
Nobre said the cause of the recent surge was unclear, but that the major drivers of deforestation such as illegal logging and land clearing for cattle farming remained intact, despite the recent annual declines in forest clearing.
"All those drivers of change are there. The three years of reduced deforestation ... did not bring by themselves a cure for illegal deforestation," he said.
Destruction of forests produces about 20 percent of man-made carbon dioxide emissions, making conservation of the Amazon crucial to limiting rises in global temperatures.
But the government has struggled to stem deforestation, partly due to strong global demand that has made Brazil one of the world's biggest food suppliers. Environmental groups also warn that a rash of planned infrastructure projects in the coming years could bring more settlers to untapped regions.
"Infrastructure is associated with aggressive and progressive land use change," said Nobre, noting that 90 percent of Amazon deforestation occurred within 30 miles (50 km) of roads.
He also warned that continued high world oil prices were likely to result in a surge in demand for Amazon land to produce ethanol, the alternative transport fuel for which global demand is already booming.
"If oil prices keep increasing there will be an explosion of biofuel production in the Amazon, contrary to Brazilian government policy," Nobre said.
Destruction of rainforest accelerates despite outcry (18 January 2008) http://environment.independent.co.uk/green_living/article3348001.ece
(...) Despite its acknowledged role as one the largest carbon sinks on the planet, its unrivalled biodiversity and the fact it stores half the world's fresh water, one fifth of the Amazon basin has been destroyed in recent years. There are serious concerns that the very survival of the world's largest rainforest is threatened and, last month, the WWF published research suggesting the Amazon could be wiped out by 2030. A record drought two years ago reduced the Amazon to less than a trickle in large sections and fires last year, caused in part by forest-clearing for ranches, scattered tonness of ash over Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. Now in his second term Brazil's President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has made a series of commitments to safeguarding the Amazon and his Environment Minister, Marina da Silva, has been feted for her stance on conservation. But there is serious criticism of the government's record: that it has tended to favour industrial growth over environmental concerns. President Lula's administration has signed off on a rash of questionable infrastructure projects."Infrastructure is associated with aggressive and progressive land use change," said Dr Nobre. CLIP
World Bank Pledges to Save Trees... Then Helps Cut Down Amazon Forest (January 16, 2008) http://www.enn.com/ecosystems/article/29402
The World Bank has emerged as one of the key backers behind an explosion of cattle ranching in the Amazon, which new research has identified as the greatest threat to the survival of the rainforest.Ranching has grown by half in the last three years, driven by new industrial slaughterhouses which are being constructed in the Amazon basin with the help of the World Bank. The revelation flies in the face of claims from the bank that it is funding efforts to halt deforestation and reduce the massive greenhouse gas emissions it causes.Roberto Smeraldi, head of Friends of the Earth Brazil and lead author of the new report, obtained exclusively by The Independent on Sunday, said the bank's contradictory policy on forests was now clear: "On the one hand you try and save the forest, on the other you give incentives for its conversion."There are now more than 74 million cattle reared in the Amazon basin, the world's most important eco-system, where they outnumber people by a ratio of more than three to one. Fuelled by massive illegal ranches, the South American giant has become the world's leading beef exporter, rearing more cattle than all 25 EU members put together. This industrial expansion comes despite international agreements to combat deforestation, and claims from the government of Brazil that it is succeeding in slowing the destruction of the world's largest standing forest."Land-use change in the Amazon is first and foremost a product of ranching. It is on the hooves of cattle, out on the forest fringe, where the repercussions are being felt," said Mr Smeraldi. The new report, "The Cattle Realm", comes after a year in which deforestation was acknowledged as the second leading cause of carbon emissions worldwide and was included in the plan for a new global treaty to fight climate change. But the catastrophic destruction of the Amazon to make way for ranches is being funded by the same international institutions that have pledged to fight deforestation. The World Bank, which unveiled a new programme to fund "avoided deforestation" at the UN climate summit in Bali last month, is at the same time pouring money into the expansion of slaughterhouses in the Amazon region. The new report estimates that the internationally funded expansion of Brazil's beef industry was responsible for up to 12 billion tons of CO2 emissions over the past decade - an amount comparable to two years of emissions from the US. A million trees? No, we need a billion (2007-02-15) http://www.ippmedia.com/ipp/guardian/2007/02/15/84419.html
When Nobel Prize laureate Prof Wangari Maathai visited the United States a few years ago she met a corporate group that said it planned to plant a million trees. Prof Wangari supported the idea but her vision for tree planting was beyond the horizon, having herself steered the Kenya Green Belt Movement to plant more than 30 million trees since 1977. She had thus told the group that it would be better if they targeted to plant a billion trees given the state of deforestation in the world and the need to rehabilitate the environment in order to combat global warming and climate change. It is from this vision of Prof Wangari that the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) came up with the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign which is now in its third month. The campaign aims to plant a minimum one billion trees this year. Yet even before the UNEP campaign was launched last November, there have been many tree planting activities the world over as individuals, schools and institutions, private sector organizations, and local authorities implemented their own plans to plant trees. What is required now, however, is the upping of these activities basing on the need for voluntary collective action to fight global warming and climate change. Man needs trees now more than ever before for several reasons but two are the major ones. Deforestation due to agriculture, urbanization and other human activities is going on at an unprecedented pace. If reforestation efforts are not taken there would soon be no more land for expansion of farms, water sources would either dry up or drastically reduce flows and flora and fauna would vanish from the planet. We therefore need to plant more trees so as to conserve soil and water, to prevent desertification, to mitigate natural disasters like floods and drought as well as to maintain the productivity of soil. Trees Across America: Help the Urban Forest http://forestry.about.com/cs/employment/p/TAA_plant.htm
(...) Surveys indicate that urban forests are in serious danger in certain areas. In the past 30 years alone, we have lost 30% of all our urban trees - a loss of over 600 million trees. 1 tree for every American symbolizes a unified effort of all of our citizens to combat urban deforestation in and near America's cities.
Industrial agriculture is killing the climate. But it is possible to turn this key source of greenhouse gas emissions into a carbon sink, our new report 'Cool Farming: Climate impacts of agriculture and mitigation potential' reveals.
Farming is responsible for an estimated 8.5-16.5 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, or 17-32 percent of all human-induced greenhouse gas emissions.
The overuse of fertilisers, dependence on pesticides, land clearing, soil degradation, and intensive animal farming lie at the heart of the problem.
Using too much fertiliser accounts for the highest single share of agriculture's direct emissions, currently equal to some 2.1 billion tonnes of CO2 per year, and results in the emission of nitrous oxide, which is some 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide in changing the climate.
The second biggest direct emitter is animals. Cattle and sheep in particular, produce large amounts of the potent greenhouse gas methane when digesting; levels are increasing as a result of the growing demand for meat. Each kilogramme of beef produced results in 13 kilos of carbon emission; for lamb each kilo produces 17 kilos of emissions.
It is not only these direct effects that contribute to climate change. Cutting down forests and other natural cover to make way for agricultural land for grazing, growing animal feed and other crops, removes vital carbon sinks so increasing global warming. Over the past 20 years, more than 300 million hectares of tropical forests, an area nearly as big as India, has been destroyed largely for intensive animal farming, or palm oil for biofuel production.
What can be done?
Governments need to reject the current model of energy- and chemically-intensive farming that characterises industrial agriculture and replace it with farming that works both with nature and the needs of local communities.
By reducing the use of fertilisers, protecting soil and biodiversity, improving rice production and cutting demand for meat, especially in developed countries, the devastating effects of agriculture on the climate can be reversed.
Farmers need to be encouraged to use less fertiliser with more precision, and given support to convert to modern, ecological farming methods. Measures must be adopted which enrich soil, such as using cover crops when fields are not in use, to stop it from being leached of all nutrients. Traditional practices and local seed varieties need to be championed in favour of such costly and environmentally damaging options as genetically engineered organisms.
Reduction of methane produced by rice, one of the world's staple foods, is vital. It can be achieved by using less water and fertiliser without sacrificing yield. And slash demand for meat.
All this is possible without putting feeding the world at risk. Governments and international institutions have the means to stop agriculture from killing the climate now.
Saving the World with Biodynamic Farming (16/01/08) http://www.i-sis.org.uk/biodynamicFarming.php One farmer, one cow, one planet - What if the world were an apple? One quarter of the apple is land and the rest is water. Cut the land in half and put aside that which is deserts and mountains. Quarter what is left and the peel of one of those quarters represents the topsoil that must feed the whole world. This analogy illustrates how important it is to get the best out of the available soil to provide abundant and nutritious food for everyone on the planet. Peter Proctor is a soil scientist who has worked with the stuff for over sixty years. His favourite invertebrate is the earthworm, which he describes as the unpaid servant of soil health and his favourite animal is the cow because of all the dung it provides. Dung is something that Proctor prizes more highly than gold, jewels, fossil fuels, or many other natural resources. His recommendation for green-fingered gardeners and for the long term sustainability and security of global agricultural systems is the same: a complex preparation of medicinal plant material (see Box) added to compost, manure and slurry. The mineral enriched compost preparations lessen soil compaction, enhance the quality of topsoil, increase microbial activity and encourage earthworms.Known as the father of the modern biodynamic farming movement in New Zealand, Proctors work with crisis-struck farmers in India (see also Stem Farmers Suicides with Organic Farming ) over the past fifteen year provides a strong grassroots alternative to industrialised conventional agriculture, which is failing on all counts Like many other critics, he believes that we have become separated from our food by a global system of multinational corporations controlling what we grow and what we eat, and biodynamic agriculture may be the last chance this planet has for a healthy, secure, and ecologically efficient food supply. What is biodynamic agriculture? CLIP
Beware the New Doubly Green Revolution (14/01/08) http://www.i-sis.org.uk/doublygreenrevolution.php
The fake moral crusade to feed the world with genetically modified crops promoted as the second Doubly Green Revolution is doing even more damage than the first. The bad genetics involved in has failed the test in science and in the real world (...) The failures of the Green Revolution are widely acknowledged, and even by Swaminathan himself, who referred to a fatigue of the Green Revolution: a sharp drop in the yield of grain per unit of fertilizer applied as well as a drop in yield. In India, grain yield per unit of fertilizer applied decreased by two-thirds during the Green Revolution years. And the same has happened elsewhere.Between 1970 and 2000, the annual growth of fertilizer use on Asian rice has been 3 to 40 times the growth of rice yields. In Central Luzon, Philippines, rice yield increased 13 percent during the 1980s, but came at the price of a 21 percent increase in fertilizer use. In the Central Plains, yield went up only 6.5 percent, while fertilizer use rose 24 percent and pesticides jumped by 53 percent. In West Java, a 23 percent yield increase was accomplished by 65 and 69 percent increases in fertilizers and pesticides respectively. However, it is the absolute drop in yields despite high inputs of fertilizer that finally punctured the Green Revolution bubble. (...) The growing hunger in Africa is largely due to the increased impoverishment of the rural people who once grew food, but have now left farming. Todays African farmers could easily produce far more food than they do, if they can get credit to cover production costs, or find buyers or obtain fair prices to give them a minimum profit margin. Rural Africa has been devastated by 25 years of free trade policies imposed by the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organisation, the US and EU. The forced privatisation of food crop marketing boards - which once guaranteed African farmers minimum prices and held food reserves for emergencies - and rural development banks - which gave farmers credit to produce food left farmers without financing to grow food and without buyers for their produce. Free trade agreements have made it easier for private traders to import subsidized food from the US and EU than to negotiate with thousands of local farmers. This effective dumping drives local farm prices below the costs of production and puts local farmers out of business.A new technology package with GM crops is not going to make any difference to the social and structural problems, and judging by Indias recent experience, it would make things much worse. It will further narrow the genetic base of indigenous agriculture, increase farmers indebtedness in paying for patented seeds, increase farmers vulnerability as GM varieties are more susceptible to crop failures, and bring extra environmental and health risks (see GM Science Exposed. , ISIS CD book). The doubly green revolution can only exacerbate poverty and hunger in AfricaSo what does Africa need instead? This has been so obvious it hardly needs saying, as all forms of sustainable, agro-ecological farming systems around the world, including Africa have been staging a successful revival since the late 1980s (The Case for A GM-Free Sustainable World, ISIS Publication). But it will be instructive to learn from Cubas experience, particularly in the light of freeing agriculture from its dependence on fossil fuels. Lessons from Cuba: agriculture without fossil fuels - Cuba is where agriculture without fossil fuels has been put to its greatest test, thanks to the collapse of trade with the former socialist bloc; and it has passed with flying colours CLIP
More of US Grain Crop to be Consumed by Family Car WASHINGTON - Almost a third of the US grain crop next year may be diverted from the family dinner table to the family car as fuel, putting upward pressure on food prices, a leading expert warned on Tuesday.
Grain prices are near record levels as the United States produces more ethanol, now made mostly from corn, to blend with gasoline and stretch available motor fuel supplies.
Farmers, hoping to cash in, are expected to grow 30 percent of next year's grain crop for ethanol use as more refineries that process corn into fuel come online, according to Lester Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute and long-time critic of using food grains for fuel.
"The price of grain is now tied to the price of oil," Brown said at the Reuters Global Agriculture and Biofuel Summit.
As a result, he said, prices will go up for poultry, beef and pork as well as dairy products because corn is the number one animal feed for farmers.
"Our refrigerators are stuffed with corn," Brown said. For example, feed prices make up about 40 percent of the cost of poultry alone, he said.
The pressure on food prices from ethanol will only get worse as the new energy law passed last month requires US ethanol production to soar from about 9 billion gallons this year to 36 billion gallons by 2022.
"What we see are cars beginning to compete with people for world grain supplies," Brown said. "We could see a consumer revolt in this country."
Brown said that an SUV with a 25-gallon (95 litres) tank filling up with ethanol would use enough grain, about 560 pounds (254 kg), to feed the average person for one year.
However, the Renewable Fuels Association, a trade group that lobbies for ethanol producers, says corn demand for ethanol doesn't have a big effect on retail food prices.
The group cites government data that shows labor costs account for 38 cents of every dollar spent on food, with packing, transportation, energy, advertising and profits accounting for 24 cents. Just 19 cents can be attributed to the cost of food inputs like grains and oilseeds, the group said.
Still, rising ethanol demand helped cut world grain inventories last year to an all-time low of just 53 days of demand, compared with the 70 days of grain stocks many food experts say is normal.
Brown said higher corn prices may bring back the backyard-type Victory Gardens last seen in World War II, with rural homeowners planting small plots of corn to cash in on growing ethanol use.
Autism is a difficult disorder to miss, as it is characterized by noticeably abnormal or impaired development in social interaction and communication and a markedly restricted array of activities and interests. And while scientific consensus claims autism has been around for millennia at generally the same prevalence, that prevalence is now considered to be one in every 166 children born in the United States.
Therefore, with this devastating statistic in mind, one reporter set out to analyze the autism rates among Amish communities. Why? Because perhaps searching for autistic Amish children would reveal clues to the cause of autism ... and it did.
The Clues Come Together
Since they have been cut off for hundreds of years from American culture and scientific progress, the Amish may have had less exposure to some new factor triggering autism in the rest of population. The likely culprit: vaccines.
Traveling to the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country in search of autistic Amish children, the reporter, based on national statistics, should have found as many as 200 children with autism in the community -- instead, he found only three, the oldest age 9 or 10:
The first autistic Amish child was a girl who had been brought over from China, adopted by one family only to be given up after becoming overwhelmed by her autism, and then re-adopted by an Amish Mennonite family. (China, India and Indonesia are among countries moving fast to mass-vaccination programs.)
The second autistic Amish child definitely had received a vaccination and developed autism shortly thereafter.
The reporter was unable to determine the vaccination status of the third child.
Dangerous Effects of Thimerosal
In some vaccines, they use a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal that keeps multiple-dose vials from becoming contaminated by repeated needle sticks. After health officials became concerned about the amount of mercury infants and children were receiving through thimerosal-tainted vaccines, the toxin was phased out of U.S. vaccines starting in 1999.
However, due to mislabeling and other problems, its presence is still being felt, and more and more children are suffering because of it.
Dr. Mercola's Comment:
Does anyone out there really need more evidence than this?
Admittedly, this was not a placebo-controlled scientific trial but an evidence-based fact analysis that, in my mind, provides an irrefutable link to a lifestyle and, most likely, mercury-containing vaccine connection to autism.
Folks, you don't have to be a medical doctor, hold advanced epidemiology degrees or teach molecular genetics to figure this one out. You don't even need a degree in rocket science. How much more obvious could it be?
The link between autism and vaccines is certainly not a new idea. In fact, suggestions of this link have been in the national news for at least six years now. Just last year a study, that reviewed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Vaccine Data Link, concluded that children who receive thimerosal-containing vaccinations are 27 times more likely to develop autism than children who do not.
That's a 2,700 percent increase. The numbers just don't lie.
This most recent investigation simply provides the proverbial icing on the cake. There aren't too many other places, if any, in America where you can find large groups of children who haven't been vaccinated.
The reporter found three children with autism. One child was adopted and previously vaccinated, another was one of the few Amish children who were vaccinated, and the third had an unclear vaccine history. That leaves, at most, potentially one child out of an expected 200 (from national statistics) with autism. The odds of this being mere coincidence are slim to none.
At Least Change the Rules Concerning the Hepatitis B Vaccine
Because of their religious beliefs, the Amish community chooses not to give their children any vaccines. Understandably, many of you may not choose such a radical approach. However, if you were to focus on just one vaccine, I would encourage you to look at the issues surrounding the hepatitis B vaccine.
The multi-dose version of this vaccine, which is typically administered to newborns before they leave the hospital, still contains thimerosal. This is reprehensible, irresponsible negligence of the highest magnitude. The immature central nervous systems of these helpless newborns are particularly susceptible to toxic insults, and thimerosal, the mercury-containing preservative used in these vaccines, is one of the worst.
It would be much easier to understand if the hepatitis B vaccine had some value, but most natural health experts who study this are convinced that this is nearly always an absolutely unnecessary vaccine.
There are only about 5,000 people a year who develop the most serious consequence of hepatitis B infection, liver cancer. That means we are immunizing tens of millions of infants and causing brain injury that has caused an epidemic of autism to protect liver cancer in 5,000 adults. And, many of these adults have serious social problems like IV drug abuse, alcoholism and poor nutrition that seriously increases their risk for this disease.
If you're a young parent weighing the pros and cons of vaccines, I strongly urge you to learn more about the toxicity of thimerosal, which, again, is still present in multi-dose hepatitis B vaccines, and nearly all the mandated flu vaccine for infants.
David Ayoub - Thimerosal Definite Cause Of Autism (11 March 2005) http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0503/S00089.htm
To what degree of scientific certainty can we prove that current epidemic of autism was caused by the mercury-based preservative, thimerosal, in childhood vaccines? In response to this question, David Ayoub, MD, told Independent Media TV, ''I can state that the certainty of the science supporting mercury as a major cause of autism is probably more overpowering than the science behind any other disease process that I studied dating back to medical school.''I think a disease that effects more individuals than AIDS or cancer, in previously normal infants and children, he states, has created a sense of urgency amongst researchers.According to Ayoub, A growing number of experimental, epidemiological and biochemical research, has unequivocally shown that mercury is directly linked to the development of autism spectrum disorders and is significantly toxic to the gastrointestinal, immunological, metabolic and neurobiological systems in children. The science of causality is known and understood down to the manner in which mercury impairs the neural pathways of attention, he adds, I really don't see the need for more research to prove causality. He believes the focus should be directed towards methods to remove mercury from the body and repairing those biochemical systems that are injured by mercury.Ayoub is the Director of the Prairie Collaborative for Immunization, an organization that is self-funded, which aids organizations, journalists, and legislators obtain accurate information to assist their work. He is also the author of the report, Pregnancy and the Myth of Influenza Vaccination-Is it safe, is it effective, is it necessary? What the CDC documents reveal. When asked what vaccines still contain the mercury-based, thimerosal, Ayoub said, The major culprit today is the influenza vaccine. About 80% of flu vaccines contain as much as 25 micrograms of mercury per dose. Since the EPA has set a limit of 0.1 mcg/kg (1 kg =2.2 lbs), Ayoub warns, everyone who receives the vaccine will be overdosed. (...) Few doctors realize that most flu vaccines contain 25 micrograms of mercury per dose. Both the EPA and FDAs allowable daily exposure limits are 0.1 microgram per kg, meaning that recipients of a flu vaccine must weigh at least 550 pounds to meet federal exposure guidelines. Therefore, by injecting the mother, the fetus would receive a dose of mercury that exceeds the federal limits by several hundred-fold. Furthermore, Ayoub adds, all federal guidelines are based upon studies of exposure tolerances in adults, not a fetus. He questions why the CDC is so certain that ethylmercury can be safely injected into children or pregnant women, when the FDA and EPA have stated that ingestion of methylmercury can have harmful effects on the fetus, with warnings such as: some fish and shellfish contain higher levels of mercury that may harm an unborn baby or young child's developing nervous system. . . . Therefore, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are advising women who may become pregnant, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children to avoid some types of fish and eat fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury. . . While it is true that the primary danger from methylmercury in fish is to the developing nervous system of the unborn child, it is prudent for nursing mothers and young children not to eat these fish as well. Mercury in Fish and Shellfish http://www.oceansalive.org/eat.cfm?subnav=mercury
Mercury is a highly poisonous metal that poses a serious health risk to developing fetuses, babies and children, who may suffer brain damage and learning disabilities from prolonged or repeated exposure to small amounts of mercury. Although the metal occurs naturally in the environment, mercury levels in our air, land and water have increased dramatically since the rise of industrialization in the late 19th century. Mercury is released into the air primarily from industrial sources, falls to the ground in rain or snow and is deposited into water bodies, where it is converted into another highly toxic form of mercury (called methylmercury). Methlymercury then builds up in the tissues of fish and other animals, and in high concentrations can pose serious health risks to people who frequently eat contaminated fish. Based on the available data on mercury concentrations in fish tissue, Environmental Defense recommends limited consumption of certain fish. (View full chart.) (...) The problem of mercury-contaminated fish is widespread CLIP

(...) Several influenza vaccines that are currently marketed in Canada contain minute quantities of thimerosal, which is used as a preservative. One thimerosal-free vaccine (Influvac, Solvay Pharma), approved for persons ³ 18 years of age, is available in Canada1. Retrospective cohort studies (NOTE from Jean: Such studies are financed by the Vaccine industry!!) of large health databases have demonstrated that there is no association between childhood vaccination with thimerosal-containing vaccines and neurodevelopmental outcomes, including autistic-spectrum disorders. Nevertheless, in response to public concern, influenza vaccine manufacturers in Canada are currently working towards production and marketing of thimerosal-free influenza vaccines. CLIP

Tens of millions of the most common birds in North America have disappeared, and their absence is signaling a silent alarm bell about the state of our ecosystem.According to a report by the National Audubon Society, the numbers of some species of birds have plummeted by 60 percent to 80 percent. The video above (Go at the URL above to watch it) explains some of the dramatic environmental disruptions that are contributing to the decimation of the bird population, and what their disappearance means to the future of our planet.
Dr. Mercola's Comments:
Like the tragedy of the disappearing honeybees, the disappearance of millions and millions of birds means that something has gone terribly wrong in our environment.
There are many likely contributing factors for this observation, everything from pesticides to urban sprawl and pollution, but there is an extremely pervasive, silent killer out there that hardly anyone is mentioning: Information-carrying radio waves.
These radio waves are coming from your cell phones and other wireless technologies, and they have increased exponentially in the past three or four years alone.
Its already known that birds living near mobile phone base stations do not breed well. Its also known that exposure to these frequencies causes disorientation in migratory birds.
Now, at the end of 2007 there were 4 billion cell phones on the planet. What this means is that even if you are one of the few who decides not to use a cell phone, you are being exposed to information-carrying radio waves at unprecedented levels, and so are all of the birds, bugs and wildlife that live among us.
According to Dr. George Carlo, who is clearly the worlds leading expert on cell phone safety, The background level of information-carrying radio waves has now reached saturation point.
In other words, theyre everywhere.
And when we talk about these radio waves you have to understand that there is no safe level of exposure. This is completely different even from electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which are well-known to cause brain cancer, tumor growth, and maybe even Alzheimers disease.
But according to Dr. Carlo, we have built up certain defenses against EMFs, which are actually two parts: the magnetic field and the electric field. We have been exposed to a magnetic influence simply because of gravity, while lightning and other natural sources have exposed us to some level of electric fields.
As a result, we can be exposed to low levels of EMFs and perhaps not be affected. But this is not so with radio frequencies (RF) and information-carrying radio waves.
We do not have any controls that make the information-carrying radio wave manageable from a public health point of view, says Dr. Carlo.
And this is a major red flag. According to Dr. Carlo:
Here is why we have a problem Before 1930, almost none of this exposure existed and up until about the 1980s, most of the exposure that had to do with information-carrying radio waves only occurred high in the sky.
Like your television, your radio, the signal would go from a big antenna on top of the mountain to the antenna on top of your house and then it would be hardwired back down into your television for example. Information-carrying radio waves were not at the street, but this wonderful invention called the cell phone brought the information-carrying radio waves to the street.
The huge explosion in cell phone use and their corresponding information-carrying radio waves is causing the following problems:
- Damaging cell membranes
- Decreasing intracellular communication by disrupting microtubular connections that allow biophotons to communicate between cells
- Increasing deposits of heavy metals into your cells, which increases intracelluar production of free radicals and can radically decrease cellular production of energy thus making you incredibly fatigued
First the Honeybees, Now the Birds, Next Humans?
It would be naïve to assume that the bees and the birds are the only living creatures being impacted here. Perhaps because they are smaller, or more sensitive to the radio waves and changes in frequencies, they are being tragically impacted right now.
But who, or what, will be next?
The only real solution to this major problem is to move our culture away from wireless and back to wires.
Is this going to happen? No way. The telecommunication industry has even more power than the pharmaceutical industry, and there is no way they are going to let that happen.
Well, I took some steps in my own life and when I moved I had my new home completely renovated with wired CAT-5 cables -- so I have no wireless connections at all.
For you and your family, I would suggest keeping cell phone use to a bare minimum and using a speakerphone feature when you do use it. If you must keep your conversation more private, a NON-BlueTooth headset can be used.
I believe that one day it will be shown that using cell phones is far more dangerous than smoking cigarettes ever was, and I will reveal the details of why this is so in my next book, coming in 2009.
Cell Phone Users 240 Percent More Prone to Brain Tumors http://www.mercola.com/2006/apr/20/cell_phone_users_240_percent_more_prone_to_brain_tumors.htm
A new Swedish study indicates that mobile phone use can raise the risk of brain tumors. In the study, 2,200 cancer patients, and an equal number of healthy control cases, were examined for mobile phone use.Among the cancer patients, about a tenth of the nearly 1,000 with malignant brain tumors were also heavy mobile phone users.Heavy use was defined as 2,000 or more hours, or about 10 years' use at an hour per day.Brain cancer patients also showed a significant increase in risk of tumor for the side of the head where they generally used the mobile phone. The researchers who conducted the study said that the figures demonstrate a 240 percent increased risk of a malignant tumor on that side of the head.
Cordless Phones Increase Your Brain Cancer Risks http://www.mercola.com/2006/mar/21/cordless_phones_increase_your_brain_cancer_risks.htm
The base stations of some home-use cordless phones emit twice as much radiation as cell phone masts. And, unlike cell phones, cordless phone base stations emit radiation even when they are not in use. This means that some cordless phones could be a brain tumor risk. The British Health Protection Agency has also admitted that there is an increased association between acoustic neuromas -- a type of ear tumor that can cause deafness -- and electromagnetic fields of the type emitted by these telephones. A study has shown that the risk of cordless phone users developing acoustic neuromas doubles over the course of a decade. The environmental group Powerwatch has recommended that cordless phone users switch to a different type of phone.
The secret government of the US and EU has promised a major overhaul in the wake of the warning it got from the Chinese secret society, according to a senior Japanese public security police officer and Freemason who has been acting as an intermediary with the Chinese secret society. Expect big changes this autumn, he said in comments confirmed by a member of the Japanese royal family. What you will be seeing is the unwinding of George Bush seniors 50-year campaign to turn the U.S. into a fascist regime, the secret police agent says. George Bush senior is now a broken man showing signs of senile dementia, he adds.
If the sources are to be believed, U.S. President George Bushs government will resign, before his term expires, and will be replaced by an interim regime headed by Al Gore. This will start a 2-3 year transition period during which suppressed technology, such as free energy, will be released and a new system for running the planet will be implemented, according to these two sources. They [The illuminati] know their rule is ending but they do not want it to end in an ugly way, the security police source says.
The recent market turmoil, including the Chinese threat to sell dollars, was part of the bargaining towards major changes in the secret balance of power, we are told.
Certainly there are some encouraging signs. The tearful resignation of U.S. presidential brain Karl Rove removes a central lynchpin of Bushs regime. Since it follows six other resignations; it does look like rats abandoning a sinking ship.
In Japan, meanwhile, the victory of the opposition Democratic Party in the recent upper house elections could lead to the end of the Iraq and Afghan wars. Japan Democratic Party leader Ichiro Ozawa has promised to block renewal of an anti-terrorist bill that allows Japans Self-Defense Forces to provide considerable logistical support to the U.S. sponsored wars in the region. Without that support, it is unlikely the U.S. will have enough money or military might to continue the wars.
Since this follows UK Prime Minister Browns vow to remove British troops with or without U.S. approval, it will mean the Bush regime has lost its last big war allies. Brown also publicly rebuked Bush during a recent visit by doing such things as pointedly refusing to take home a souvenir he was given.
There are also signs the Japanese election was manipulated behind the scenes to promote a Democratic Party victory in Japan. Just before the election, the Japanese mainstream media suddenly began reporting heavily about a pension scandal the JDP has been talking -unreported- about for at least 5 years. This was crucial for their victory. We may see a general election as early as this fall, followed by the birth of a JDP government and an end to the post-war Japanese regime. It could be a sign of diminished Rockefeller influence in Japan. However, it is not a sign of diminished illuminati control of Japan since Ozawa is himself a Freemason.
Despite the positive developments, the biggest worry is all the public hints about a new terrorist attack on the U.S. to be used as an excuse to trigger martial law. However, such an attack at this time would fool nobody, the sources said. Many U.S. citizens might be fooled but no other government in the world would believe it. The secret government knows they cannot use their old tricks anymore, the sources said.
The Chinese secret societies meanwhile, are watching carefully for any sign of new attempts to spread disease or otherwise carry out genocidal attacks. They only give one warning and have now initiated a news blackout. I am not in the loop about what they would do if a new breach was found but, they did say whatever action they took would be unpredictable and worse than expected.
At the same time, an anti-Rothschild alliance has been formed in Tokyo. They warn that the entire Bush regime was probably set up as a bad cop to scare people in the arms of the EU good cop. They say there may be other surprises, possibly including a fake UFO invasion that Henry Kissinger hinted at during the 1991 Bilderberg meeting. We will have to look at least four or five steps ahead in order to keep on top of these people, the alliance says.
So far, the EU only consists of governments that are controlled in secret by the Rothschilds etc. (Turkey is also a Rothschild fief). Their secret parliament, the Bilderbergers, have already shown they are racist by refusing to allow any Japanese to join. As a result, any effort to turn the EU into the base of a world government is doomed to fail.
The anti-Rothschild alliance, (with the discreet backing of the Chinese secret societies), will be contacting leaders of Russia, China, India, the Muslim countries, South America, Africa etc. to create a global alliance that will demand a new way of running the planet.
The UN Security Council will have to be replaced with a new grouping that more accurately represents the people of this planet. As it stands, 4 out of the 5 permanent Security Council members are representatives of Caucasian nations even though only 17% of the worlds people are Caucasian. This global apartheid will have to end.
The worlds financial system will also have to be replaced with a more transparent and equitable system that relies on more than simple human selfish greed as the main incentive for transactions.
Once this is done, a three-year campaign against the five curses of humanity: war, poverty, environmental destruction, ignorance and disease could be carried out. This could be a test case for replacing the Hegelian system of pitting opposite forces against each other in war with a system for people to compete towards agreed upon peaceful goals.
The industries and lobbies that have depended on war and turmoil will have to be given new goals and direction. One possibility would be a long-term campaign to terraform Mars.
People will have to be patient, however. These changes will happen over a period of years, not months. In the meantime, let us see if the autumn surprise appears as promised.
