The Dawn of a New Era Series #3: Looking Into The Precipice... And Shifting Direction

Hello everyone!

Judging from what I collected for your review below, 2006 is already shaping up to be a real crossroad year, the moment in history when we will either shift away from war, global environmental catastrophe and the worst Orwellian nightmare you can imagine towards a truly Love-driven, sustainable and peaceful future, or just continue where we are currently headed, which this compilation amply illustrates.

For a starter check this one out...

The Panopticon: A Mass Surveillance Prison For Humanity (January 11 2006)
http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/january2006/110106thepanopticon.htm
Latest trends in Big Brother outstrip Orwell's worst nightmare - The Panopticon is defined as a prison so constructed that the inspector can see each of the prisoners at all times, without being seen. This is an accurate description of the accelerating movement by western governments to erect giant, powerful, all-pervading mass surveillance, tracking and control grids that will keep all populations firmly under the baleful and watchful gaze of Big Brother. We are still debating the NSA listening to foreign calls from the US when the NSA admitted twenty years ago that they were listening to domestic US calls under the Echelon program. This is de-classified and public but the media acts like they don't know about it. Why is there even a debate about if they are tracking and tracing us when RFID transponders are going in cars nationwide to follow our every movement? This system has already been partly implemented in Britain with barely a whimper of dissent. You can call your cell phone company, ask them where you are and they will tell you down to a few feet. That is a federal operation that's hooked into the NSA right at this moment and about to be hooked into every major police department and squad car. Your name, everything about you, what you're doing, where you're going and the cop can punch in a few keys and use your phone as an audio sensor. Major cities such as Austin, Texas installed gunshot detection microphones. The government assured us that they respect our privacy but the very companies installing them bragged about how they can listen to a kid on the street talking to his friend two hundred yards away. And now, from Rochester New York to Austin Texas to Chicago, the government has announced that they are being used as microphones and they will be used to listen to us. CLIP - THIS IS REALLY A MUST READ - WITH LOTS OF RELATED SUPPORTIVE LINKS...

And then you'll find below significant excerpts from Lester Brown's new book, "Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble", which IMHO is also a MUST READ article.

And then there is the rest of this 86+ page compilation...

Please note that a new Meditation Focus will be coming your way in time for this Sunday's globally synchronized meditation.

"Combining social goals and earth restoration components into a Plan B budget means an additional annual expenditure of $161 billion. Such an investment is huge, but it is not a charitable act. It is an investment in the world in which our children will live. “If we fail to build a new economy before decline sets in, it will not be because of a lack of fiscal resources, but rather because of obsolete priorities,” adds Brown. “The world is now spending $975 billion annually for military purposes. The U.S. 2006 military budget of $492 billion, accounting for half of the world total, goes largely to the development and production of new weapon systems. Unfortunately, these weapons are of little help in curbing terrorism, nor can they reverse the deforestation of the earth or stabilize climate. “The military threats to national security today pale beside the trends of environmental destruction and disruption that threaten the economy and thus our early twenty-first century civilization itself. New threats call for new strategies. These threats are environmental degradation, climate change, the persistence of poverty, and the loss of hope.” The U.S. military budget is totally out of sync with these new threats. If the United States were to underwrite the entire $161 billion Plan B budget by shifting resources from the $492 billion spent on the military, it still would be spending more for military purposes than all other NATO members plus Russia and China combined. Of all the resources needed to build an economy that will sustain economic progress, none is more scarce than time. With climate change we may be approaching the point of no return. The temptation is to reset the clock. But we cannot. Nature is the timekeeper. It is decision time. Like earlier civilizations that got into environmental trouble, we can decide to stay with business as usual and watch our global economy decline and eventually collapse. Or we can shift to Plan B, building an economy that will sustain economic progress. “It is hard to find the words to express the gravity of our situation and the momentous nature of the decision we are about to make,” says Brown. “How can we convey the urgency of moving quickly? Will tomorrow be too late? “One way or another, the decision will be made by our generation. Of that there is little doubt. But it will affect life on earth for all generations to come.”

— Lester Brown -- Taken from http://www.earth-policy.org/Books/PB2/index.htm

"Earlier civilizations that moved onto an economic path that was environmentally unsustainable did so largely in isolation. But in today’s increasingly integrated, interdependent world economy, if we are facing civilizational decline, we are facing it together. The fates of all peoples are intertwined. This interdependence can be managed to our mutual benefit only if we recognize that the term “in the national interest” is in many ways obsolete. The question facing governments is whether they can respond quickly enough to prevent threats from becoming catastrophes. The world has precious little experience in responding to aquifer depletion, rising temperatures, expanding deserts, melting polar ice caps, and a shrinking oil supply. These new trends will fully challenge the capacity of our political institutions and leadership. In times of crisis, societies sometimes have a Nero as a leader and sometimes a Churchill."

"During meditation, and in conversations with our friends who are healers, clairvoyants and lightworkers around the world, we sense a rising energy level, a renewal of faith in the future, and a growing desire for community. That rising energy is directing us to forge alliances and to participate in community action to bring about positive change in our homes, our neighborhoods, our countries, and the world at large. During this time of intense earth changes, at the crossroads between the Industrial Era of Cheap Oil and the Post-Carbon Solar Age, we find ourselves as spiritual beings confronted with a deep inner need to re-connect with our own hearts, and to live a life in harmony with our heart’s desire. This drive for authentic inner experience of the Divine in our daily life takes many forms. Many of us, over the last few years, have sought spiritual guidance, spiritual teachers, and spiritual community in response to this inner need. Many of us have focused more than ever before on our spiritual practice, on connecting with inner spiritual guidance, and have begun to allow ourselves to surrender our mental maps of the world, our egoistic goals and personality desires, letting the Universe guide us toward our spiritual goals. This has required many sacrifices on the part of spiritual seekers and aspirants, and has fostered an attitude of “going with the flow”, accepting the opportunities offered by our life circumstances as the framework for our activities in the world. We have struggled through a “long dark night of the soul” during this formative period, over the last few years, learning to differentiate between the various levels of spiritual experience, learning to discriminate between the varying levels of authenticity on offer via various spiritual paths and practices and teachers, and learning to trust our own inner spiritual guidance more and more completely as our contact with the many varieties of spiritual experience grows, widens and deepens."

— Curtis Lang curtis@satyacenter.com> - taken from his January newsletter available through subscription at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/globalnews

"Just a little word to echo your intro, about bad news - let us remember that even though some or most of this info is really disturbing, more and more of us are becoming sufficiently aware of what is really happening - and the secret to keeping our Peace is to KNOW deep within our souls that it all shall come to pass. All these leaders that act as if they will live for ever - will not - and in 2006, a year 8 in numerology, many will return to the nothingness they have created during their sacred opportunities and hopefully all people on Earth will again remember that indeed it ALL COMES TO PASS for such is the very nature of life on Earth. Good news is that the Earth herself will stay and that is what we should be celebrating with Her every move this year - for yes - she will continue to move and cry and vomit and re-adjust herself as much as necessary. Let us encourage and cheer Her on, for this too will come to pass and then Her and those of us who truly love Her and will stay, we will recreate Heaven on Earth again. More than ever it is important for us to keep this vision alive in our meditations."

"This government is not only more criminal and corrupt than we imagine - it is more criminal and illicit than we can imagine. Bush and company make the Mafia look like boy scouts. The collection of thugs and criminals now running the country are the greatest and most dangerous organized crime syndicate in the world. And they possess the greatest arsenal of weapons, many of them nuclear, that the world has ever seen. They have an unparalleled propensity for violence. They are not who you think they are; and they are not doing what you think they are doing."

If you are one of millions of people who: * suspect the official story of 9/11* are concerned about US foreign and domestic policy emanating out of our government's exploitation of the attacks * feel that 9/11 is the foundational issue of our time * and have wondered what action you can take, this is exactly where you need to be! CLIP The dawn of 2006 offers concerned Americans an unprecedented opportunity to finally awaken the nation to the official criminality behind 9/11 and the subsequent cover-ups. Given the ongoing corruption and spying scandals on top of the previous war lies, stolen elections, Katrina debacle, looting of the national treasury, etc., the general public has never been more prepared to face the
massive evidence of government complicity. As anyone working to educate the public about 9/11 knows, there are millions of people out there who are viscerally aware of 9/11 treachery, but still can't bring themselves to openly speak out or publicly demonstrate in protest. They could, however, be moved to less public but effective action if there were a simple and time-efficient mechanism available. 911truth.org has just launched a web-based platform to fulfill this role. Vision Keepers
http://www.n2012.com/n2012/vision_keepers/
You are invited to participate in the Vision Keepers global meditation group -- an extraordinarily cohesive and powerful group of workers on the subjective (meditative) plane, whose purpose is to assist in transformation of the planet through the invocation of universal light and its evocation upon those areas of underlying planetary and cosmic principles that can anchor the New Era based on the particular types of energies available during the Full and New moon periods. The meditations are updated approximately every two weeks in order to accommodate ourselves to these respective energies. The meditation takes place for 5 minutes daily. It is not necessary to synchronize an exact hour as our participants are located around the world, creating an ongoing wave of light during a 24 hour period. The current meditation can be found below. (...) We come together in group intent, raising our attention as high in the head as possible, allowing energy - in the form of light directly from the Sun - to flow through the body and through this worldwide group working together. We visualize this light flowing toward - and permeating our planet as it hangs in space -- giving rise to a translucent, shimmering globe, transforming from white to silver to radiant gold. We hold this vision for 2 minutes then, focusing this light from between the eyebrows, we visualize humanity, now aware of the existence of the soul, focusing attention on contact with the soul, with the resultant transformation to 'correct human relations' -- the quality of relationships intended to realize heaven on earth. We hold this vision for three minutes, then sounding aloud OOOOOOOOMMMMMMM - Recommended by "Maggie Erotokritou" surya@spidernet.com.cy>

The Holographic Universe
http://www.crystalinks.com/holographic.html
In 1982 a remarkable event took place. At the University of Paris a research team led by physicist Alain Aspect performed what may turn out to be one of the most important experiments of the 20th century. You did not hear about it on the evening news. In fact, unless you are in the habit of reading scientific journals you probably have never even heard Aspect's name, though there are some who believe his discovery may change the face of science. Aspect and his team discovered that under certain circumstances subatomic particles such as electrons are able to instantaneously communicate with each other regardless of the distance separating them. It doesn't matter whether they are 10 feet or 10 billion miles apart. Somehow each particle always seems to know what the other is doing. The problem with this feat is that it violates Einstein's long-held tenet that no communication can travel faster than the speed of light. Since traveling faster than the speed of light is tantamount to breaking the time barrier, this daunting prospect has caused some physicists to try to come up with elaborate ways to explain away Aspect's findings. But it has inspired others to offer even more radical explanations. University of London physicist David Bohm, for example, believes Aspect's findings imply that objective reality does not exist, that despite its apparent solidity the universe is at heart a phantasm, a gigantic and splendidly detailed hologram. Mass Mind Control Through Network Television - Are Your Thoughts Your Own? (12-29-5) http://www.rense.com/general69/mass.htm
Why do countless American people go along with the War on Iraq? Why do so many people call for a police state control grid? A major component to a full understanding of why this kind of governmental and corporate corruption is to discover the modern science of mind control and social engineering. It's baffling to merely glance at the stacks of documentation that this world government isn't being constructed for the greater good of humanity. Although there are a growing number of people waking up the reality of our growing transparent soft cage, there seems to be just enough citizens who are choosing to remain asleep. Worse yet, there are even those who were at least partially awake at one time but found it necessary to return to the slumber of dreamland. This is no accident; this is a carefully crafted design. The drive to dumb down the populations of planet earth is a classic art that existed before the United States did. One component to understanding and deciphering the systems of control is to become a student of the magicians of influence and propaganda. In order to defeat our enemies (or dictators), its imperative that we understand how they think and what they believe in. - Also recommended by EdElkin@aol.com

Iran. Israel. The United States. Each country has the very real potential to move in a better direction - away from lethal righteousness. How Many Iraqis Have Died Since The US Invasion In 2003? 30,000? No. 100,000? No. (1-10-6)
http://www.rense.com/general69/howmany.htm
President Bush's off-hand summation last month of the number of Iraqis who have so far died as a result of our invasion and occupation as "30,000, more or less" was quite certainly an under-estimate. The true number is probably hitting around 180,000 by now, with a possibility, as we shall see, that it has reached as high as half a million. But even Bush's number was too much for his handlers to allow. Almost as soon as he finished speaking, they hastened to downplay the presidential figure as "unofficial", plucked by the commander in chief from "public estimates". Such calculations have been discouraged ever since the oafish General Tommy Franks infamously announced at the time of the invasion: "We don't do body counts". In December 2004, an effort by the Iraqi Ministry of Health to quantify ongoing mortality on the basis of emergency room admissions was halted by direct order of the occupying power. CLIP

King George (Jan 05, 2006)
http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2006/01/05/engelhardt/index_np.html
It is slowly becoming clear that the Bush administration's real goal is not winning the right to torture, or to spy on Americans, or to lock people up without recourse. It is absolute power.
- As 2006 begins, we seem to be at a not completely unfamiliar crossroads in the long history of the American imperial presidency. It grew up, shedding presidential constraints, in the post-World War II years as part of the rise of the national security state and the military-industrial complex. It reached its constraintless apogee with Richard Nixon's presidency and what became known as the Watergate scandal -- an event marked by Nixon's attempt to create his own private national security apparatus, which he directed to secretly commit various high crimes and misdemeanors for him. It was as close as we came -- until now -- to a presidential coup d'état that might functionally have abrogated the Constitution. In those years, the potential dangers of an unfettered presidency (so apparent to the nation's Founding Fathers) became obvious to a great many Americans. As now, a failed war helped drag the president's plans down and, in the case of Nixon, ended in personal disgrace and resignation, as well as in a brief resurgence of congressional oversight activity. All this mitigated, and modestly deflected, the growth trajectory of the imperial presidency -- for a time. The "cabal," as Lawrence Wilkerson, Colin Powell's chief of staff at the State Department, has called Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and various of their neocon-ish pals, stewed over this for years, along with a group of lawyers who were prepared, once the moment came, to give a sheen of legality to any presidential act. The group of them used the post-9/11 moment to launch a wholesale campaign to recapture the "lost" powers of the imperial presidency, attempting not, as in the case of Nixon, to create an alternate national security apparatus but to purge and capture the existing one for their private purposes. Under George Bush, Dick Cheney and their assorted advisors, acolytes and zealots, a virtual cult of unconstrained presidential power has been constructed, centered around the figure of Bush himself. (...) In his news conference defending his NSA program, the president took umbrage when a reporter asked:"I wonder if you can tell us today, sir, what, if any, limits you believe there are or should be on the powers of a president during a war, at wartime? And if the global war on terror is going to last for decades, as has been forecast, does that mean that we're going to see, therefore, a more or less permanent expansion of the unchecked power of the executive in American society?""To say 'unchecked power,'" responded an irritated Bush, "basically is ascribing some kind of dictatorial position to the president, which I strongly reject."How the nation handles this crossroads presidential moment will tell us much about whether or not "some kind of dictatorial position" for our imperial, imperious and impervious president will be in the American grain for a long, long time to come.

Bush Quietly Undercuts Laws With Bill-Signing Statement (Jan 08, 2006)
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/13578051.htm
WASHINGTON - President Bush agreed with great fanfare last month to accept a ban on torture, but he later quietly reserved the right to ignore it, even as he signed it into law. Acting from the seclusion of his Texas ranch at the start of New Year's weekend, Bush said he would interpret the new law in keeping with his expansive view of presidential power. He did it by issuing a bill-signing statement -- a little-noticed device that has become a favorite tool of presidential power in the Bush White House. In fact, Bush has used signing statements to reject, revise or put his spin on more than 500 legislative provisions. Experts say he has been far more aggressive than any previous president in using the statements to claim sweeping executive power -- and not just on national security issues.``It's nothing short of breathtaking,'' said Phillip Cooper, a professor of public administration at Portland State University. ``In every case, the White House has interpreted presidential authority as broadly as possible, interpreted legislative authority as narrowly as possible and pre-empted the judiciary.'' Signing statements don't have the force of law, but they can influence judicial interpretations of a statute. They also send a powerful signal to executive branch agencies on how the White House wants them to implement new federal laws.I n some cases, Bush bluntly informs Congress that he has no intention of carrying out provisions that he considers an unconstitutional encroachment on his authority. Bush Advisor Says President Has Legal Power to Torture Children (01/09)
http://mathaba.net/0_index.shtml?x=504353
John Yoo publicly argued there is no law that could prevent the President from ordering the torture of a child of a suspect in custody – including by crushing that child’s testicles. This came out in response to a question in a December 1st debate in Chicago with Notre Dame professor and international human rights scholar Doug Cassel. What is particularly chilling and revealing about this is that John Yoo was a key architect post-9/11 Bush Administration legal policy. As a deputy assistant to then-Attorney General John Ashcroft, John Yoo authored a number of legal memos arguing for unlimited presidential powers to order torture of captive suspects, and to declare war anytime, any where, and on anyone the President deemed a threat. It has now come out Yoo also had a hand in providing legal reasoning for the President to conduct unauthorized wiretaps of U.S. citizens. Georgetown Law Professor David Cole wrote, "Few lawyers have had more influence on President Bush’s legal policies in the 'war on terror’ than John Yoo." This part of the exchange during the debate with Doug Cassel, reveals the logic of Yoo’s theories, adopted by the Administration as bedrock principles, in the real world. CLIP

FROM 2006 BRITAIN WILL BE THE FIRST COUNTRY WHERE EVERY JOURNEY BY EVERY CAR WILL BE MONITORED. (22 December 2005) VERY BIG BROTHER INDEED!!!
http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/transport/article334686.ece
Britain is to become the first country in the world where the movements of all vehicles on the roads are recorded. A new national surveillance system will hold the records for at least two years. Using a network of cameras that can automatically read every passing number plate, the plan is to build a huge database of vehicle movements so that the police and security services can analyse any journey a driver has made over several years. The network will incorporate thousands of existing CCTV cameras which are being converted to read number plates automatically night and day to provide 24/7 coverage of all motorways and main roads, as well as towns, cities, ports and petrol-station forecourts. By next March a central database installed alongside the Police National Computer in Hendon, north London, will store the details of 35 million number-plate "reads" per day. These will include time, date and precise location, with camera sites monitored by global positioning satellites. Already there are plans to extend the database by increasing the storage period to five years and by linking thousands of additional cameras so that details of up to 100 million number plates can be fed each day into the central databank. Senior police officers have described the surveillance network as possibly the biggest advance in the technology of crime detection and prevention since the introduction of DNA fingerprinting. But others concerned about civil liberties will be worried that the movements of millions of law-abiding people will soon be routinely recorded and kept on a central computer database for years. Meanwhile, Back in Britain...The Global War on Civil Liberties (December 19, 2005)
http://www.counterpunch.com/marqusee12192005.html
Two pieces of legislation currently wending their way through Britain's Parliament illustrate how the war on terror is being used to dismantle the very freedoms it's supposed to secure. Both criminalise the expression of ideas and neither is likely to deal effectively with the problem it purports to address. They are opportunistic gambits, characteristic of a government whose moralistic bombast is in inverse proportion to the morality of its behaviour. In the wake of the July 7th London bombings, the Labour government introduced yet another anti-terror bill (its third in five years). Even in its amended form, the bill contains an insidious clause creating a new offence of "encouragement of terrorism which will outlaw any statement that "glorifies terrorism. Speeches, books, films, DVDs, CDs, websites, "images as well as words, will all be subject to the new ban, which will apply to the "glorification of either specific terrorrist acts or "acts of terrorism in general, "whether in the past, in the future or generally, and whether or not the "glorification was intentional or inadvertent. Those who publish or disseminate offensive statements are as liable as those who make them. Given the government's murky definition of terrorism (the use or threat of violence "for the purpose of advancing a political, religious or ideological cause, whether in the UK or abroad), the range of statements that could theoretically fall foul of the new law is alarming. Verbal support for the Iraqi resistance or for the Palestinian intifada. Drug Cartels, Managed Violence and the Russian 9/11, Part 1 (1/11/2006)
MOST REVEALING! A MUST READ!
http://www.satyacenter.com/drugs-9-11
Drug trafficking from Afghanistan is the main source of support for international terrorism today. Did an international drug cartel affiliated with a Saudi billionaire, Russian banks, and US and Russian intelligence services conspire in the Moscow bombings of 1999? (...) Tajik authorities have claimed repeatedly that neither the US nor NATO exerts any pressure on the drug warlords inside Afghanistan. "There's absolutely no threat to the labs inside Afghanistan," said Avaz Yuldashov of the Tajikistan Drug Control Agency. "Our intelligence shows there are 400 labs making heroin there, and 80 of them are situated right along our border ... Drug trafficking from Afghanistan is the main source of support for international terrorism now," Yuldashov pointed out last year.[1]In the last three decades, three important facts have emerged about the international drug traffic. The first is that it is both huge and growing. Narcotics are estimated to be worth between $500 billion and $1 trillion a year, an amount, according to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in remarks to a United Nations General Assembly session in June 2003, that is greater than the global oil and gas industry, and twice as large as the overall automobile industry.[2] The second is that it is both worldwide and above all "highly integrated."[3] At global drug summits such as the one in Armenia in 1993, representatives of the Sicilian Mafia, the Brighton Beach Organizatsiya, and Colombian drug lords, have worked out a common modus operandi, with the laundering of dirty money entrusted chiefly to the lawless Russian banks.[4] The third important fact, undeniable since the 1980 U.S. intervention in Afghanistan, is that governments with global pretensions will avail themselves, in pursuit of their own political ends, of the resources, both financial and political, of the drug traffic. It was striking in the 1980s that the CIA, in its choice of Afghan mujahedin leaders to back against the Soviet Union, passed over those with indigenous support in favor of those, notably Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who dominated the heroin trade. The result was to enhance Hekmatyar's power until he became a leading heroin trafficker, not just in Afghanistan but in the world.[5] (...) Thanks to extensive research in Russia, we now have initial evidence of a second and even more significant proposition: There exists on the global level a drug meta-group, able to manipulate the resources of the drug traffic for its own political and business ends, without being at risk for actual trafficking. These ends include the creation of designed violence to serve the purposes of cabals in political power – most conspicuously in the case of the Yeltsin "family" in the Kremlin, but allegedly, according to Russian sources, also for those currently in power in the United States. Jesus Healed Using Cannabis? (January 6, 2003)

Jesus was almost certainly a cannabis user and an early proponent of the medicinal properties of the drug, according to a study of scriptural texts published this month. The study suggests that Jesus and his disciples used the drug to carry out miraculous healings. The anointing oil used by Jesus and his disciples contained an ingredient called kaneh-bosem which has since been identified as cannabis extract, according to an article by Chris Bennett in the drugs magazine, High Times, entitled Was Jesus a Stoner? The incense used by Jesus in ceremonies also contained a cannabis extract, suggests Mr Bennett, who quotes scholars to back his claims. CLIP

The Real Jack Abramoff Story
http://cherylsealreports.com/endtoendevil.html
(...) Abramoff the White Supremacist: JA was one of the driving forces in shoving the GOP further to the right, and in a direction that can only be described as a "neo-confederate" mind set. In the 1980s, Abramoff had close relationships with South Africa's aparthied government, even taking funding for an anti-Communist movie project from the fascist South African army. In addition, Abramoff treated native Americans with cold contempt - ripping them off as cynically as any "Indian hater" of the 19th century. Not only did Abramoff steal tens of millions from six different tribes while he purported to be helping them lobby for casinos, he actually took money from one Texas tribe as a pro-casino lobbyist while sucking up millions more from another tribe in LA that was lobbying against the TX tribe's efforts. Seems like the only thing JA DIDN'T try was install smallpox-infected slots (as a 21st century version of blankets) on reservations. In addition, Abramoff ran sweatshops in the Marianas Islands, in which native workers were outrageously exploited. Activist writer Geoff Parrish described this nightmare: "Conditions in the Marianas' sweatshops are horrific. Women are lured from China, Thailand, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and other Asian countries--often with the promise of living and working in the United States. Once they reached Saipan, the main island in the Northern Marianas chain, workers found themselves toiling eight hours a day for $3 an hour, then being forced to "donate" an additional four hours each day (reducing the gross pay to $2 an hour). In off hours the workers were not allowed to leave a crowded housing compound patrolled by armed guards. The Women were forced to live 20 per room, eat poor-quality food, and were charged by the company for housing and food through further reductions in their pay. Women were not allowed to date or marry, and pregnant women were forced to have abortions. Those who broke the rules were beaten." Guess who insured that Abramoff's slave labor camps would be exempt from any regulation? G.W. Bush . Oh, yes – his aid bought and paid for by Abramoff. Of course, Bush is allowing the same slave labor system to prevail in Iraq and Afghanistan now, too. CLIP

Fund-Raising: Take It to the (West) Bank

Money meant for the inner city went to fight the intifada. What donors to Jack Abramoff's charity didn't know. The pitch worked especially well among a group of Indian tribes who, having opened up lucrative gaming casinos, had hired Abramoff to protect their interests in Washington. In 2002 alone, records show, three Indian tribes donated nearly $1.1 million to the Capital Athletic Foundation. But now, NEWSWEEK has learned, investigators probing Abramoff's finances have found some of the money meant for inner-city kids went instead to fight the Palestinian intifada. More than $140,000 of foundation funds were actually sent to the Israeli West Bank where they were used by a Jewish settler to mobilize against the Palestinian uprising. Among the expenditures: purchases of camouflage suits, sniper scopes, night-vision binoculars, a thermal imager and other material described in foundation records as "security" equipment. CLIP

Army Magazine Prints Criticism Of U.S. In Iraq (Jan 11, 2006)

FORT - LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - A senior British officer has written a scathing critique of the U.S. Army and its performance in Iraq, accusing it of cultural ignorance, moralistic self-righteousness, unproductive micromanagement and unwarranted optimism there. His publisher: the U.S. Army.In an article published this week in the Army magazine Military Review, British Brig. Nigel Aylwin-Foster, who was deputy commander of a program to train the Iraqi military, said American officers in Iraq displayed such "cultural insensitivity" that it "arguably amounted to institutional racism" and may have spurred the growth of the insurgency. The Army has been slow to adapt its tactics, he argues, and its approach during the early stages of the occupation "exacerbated the task it now faces by alienating significant sections of the population."The decision by the Army magazine to publish the essay, which already has provoked an intense reaction among American officers, is part of a broader self-examination occurring in many parts of the Army as it approaches the end of its third year of fighting in Iraq. US Government Admits Lyme Disease Is A Bioweapon (1-7-6)

The existence of the Lyme disease epidemic is officially covered up in the UK, its myriad presentations routinely misdiagnosed as everything from "M.E." to MS to hypochondria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified these diseases as potential bioterrorism agents.". http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10039154/ So, for the first time, a US government body admits that Lyme disease is a biological warfare agent. This is the reason that hundreds of thousands of men, women and children around the world have been left to rot with wrong diagnoses, or have had their Lyme disease acknowledged but been told that it is an "easily-treated" disease, given 3 weeks' antibiotics, then told to shove off when their symptoms carried on after that. In Britain the existence of the epidemic is denied completely, and virtually no effort made to warn or educate the public about the dangers of ticks, which carry the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. The Borrelia genus has been a subject of biowar experimentation at least as far back as WW2, when the infamous Japanese Unit 731, which tortured and experimented on live prisoners, studied it. The reality is, Lyme disease is for many a chronic, horrendous, incapacitating disease producing crippling fatigue, constant pain, loss of memory, possible paralysis, psychosis, blindness and even death. Annoying someone via the Internet is now a federal crime. It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity. In other words, it's OK to flame someone on a mailing list or in a blog as long as you do it under your real name. Thank Congress for small favors, I guess. This ridiculous prohibition, which would likely imperil much of Usenet, is buried in the so-called Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act. CANADA: Liberals would seek international ban on weaponization of space (January 11, 06) http://www.canada.com/topics/news/national/story.html?id=70d6dae5-0353-400f-b4f3-34f634c3ae60&k=12858
Grits would seek international ban on weaponization of space: leaked platform - MONTREAL (CP) - Canada would seek an international deal to permanently ban weapons in space under a re-elected Liberal government, according to a leaked copy of the party's platform. The pledge is aimed at rallying the nation's more moderate voters behind the Liberals in a late-campaign drive to reverse the governing party's sagging electoral prospects. Paul Martin will take that stand against weapons in space when he unveils his party platform as early as Wednesday and will paint the pledge as the latest in a long line of Liberal-led peace initiatives. The idea will almost certainly meet with hostility from the U.S. government, coming on the heels of Canada's refusal to sign on to the American missile-defence project. As much as that missile snub irritated the White House, public opinion polls conducted earlier this year suggested it was a crowd-pleaser in Canada. The weapons pledge is one of the few headline-grabbing announcements left for a Liberal party seeking to strike a chord with voters before the Jan. 23 election. "Liberals are firmly opposed to the weaponization of space and recognize that the best time to prevent an arms race in space is before one begins," says the leaked version of the platform. The 85-page document was posted on the website for the conservative Western Standard magazine and confirms unpublished rumours of an impending Liberal space-weapons announcement. The proposal is modelled on the 1999 international mine ban treaty, for which then-foreign affairs minister Lloyd Axworthy was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. While the Liberal minister did not win the award, he was applauded for an effort that now includes 146 countries and helped clear more than 130 million square metres of land mines around the world. The United States, China, India and Russia did not sign on to that treaty and it's entirely possible that the world military powers will also take a dim view of the space-weapons pledge. CLIP - JUST RECEIVED!... WeÕve made an important breakthrough in the election. As you may have seen in the news this week, the Liberals released their election platform and they pledged to pursue international negotiations to ban all weapons from space. THINKING of helping the planet by buying an eco-friendly car? You could do more by going vegan, say Gidon Eshel and Pamela Martin of the University of Chicago. They compared the amount of fossil fuel needed to cultivate and process various foods, including running agricultural machinery, providing food for livestock and irrigating crops. They also factored in emissions of methane and nitrous oxide produced by cows, sheep and manure treatment. The typical US diet, about 28 per cent of which comes from animal sources, generates the equivalent of nearly 1.5 tonnes more carbon dioxide per person per year than a vegan diet with the same number of calories, say the researchers, who presented their results at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco last week. By comparison, the difference in annual emissions between driving a typical saloon car and a hybrid car, which runs off a rechargeable battery and gasoline, is just over 1 tonne. If you don't want to go vegan, choosing less-processed animal products and poultry instead of red meat can help reduce the greenhouse load. CLIP

With international stocks plummeting, the publication of photographs showing Japanese fishermen slaughtering minke whale provoked outrage in the West. But, says Philip Hoare, before we rush to condemn other cultures, we should consider our own role in jeopardising these fragile species. Last week's photographs of a Japanese whaling ship fighting off Greenpeace activists trying to save a dying minke whale would distress anyone, but I found them particularly gruelling, having spent the past five summers whale-watching off Cape Cod. Here, in the nutrient-rich waters over Stellwagen Bank, I've seen white-sided dolphins, finbacks and humpbacks. Minkes are there, too. At 30ft long, they are the smallest rorquals, but we do not know how they breed, or how long they live. Yet these are the animals which Japan, Norway and Iceland kill in their thousands each year. Indeed, Norway has just increased its quota from 796 in 2005 to 1,052 this year. The Japanese call minkes "cockroaches of the sea", serve their sperm as a delicacy, and their meat as burgers to fast-food addicts. Since the 1986 international moratorium on whaling, Japan has taken, under the guise of "scientific research", 7,900 minkes, 243 Bryde's whales, 140 sei whales and 38 sperm whales. And despite the use of grenade-tipped harpoons, there is no humane way to kill an animal this big: when an ailing right whale was stranded on a Cape Town beach recently, the police were advised by scientists to attach explosives to the animal's head and blow it up. Rescuing a Planet Under Stress

December 13, 2005

by Lester Brown

Scoping Out our Global Crisis

Satya Center is proud to present Chapter One of Lester R. Brown's new book, "Plan B 2.0 Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble", due out in January 2006.

Plan B: Chapter One: Entering a New World

Our global economy is outgrowing the capacity of the earth to support it, moving our early twenty-first century civilization ever closer to decline and possible collapse. In our preoccupation with quarterly earnings reports and year-to-year economic growth, we have lost sight of how large the human enterprise has become relative to the earth’s resources. A century ago, annual growth in the world economy was measured in billions of dollars. Today it is measured in trillions.

As a result, we are consuming renewable resources faster than they can regenerate. Forests are shrinking, grasslands are deteriorating, water tables are falling, fisheries are collapsing, and soils are eroding. We are using up oil at a pace that leaves little time to plan beyond peak oil. And we are discharging greenhouse gases into the atmosphere faster than nature can absorb them, setting the stage for a rise in the earth’s temperature well above any since agriculture began.

Our twenty-first century civilization is not the first to move onto an economic path that was environmentally unsustainable. Many earlier civilizations also found themselves in environmental trouble. As Jared Diamond notes in Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, some were able to change course and avoid economic decline. Others were not. We study the archeological sites of Sumerians, the Mayans, Easter Islanders, and other early civilizations that were not able to make the needed adjustments in time.

Fortunately, there is a consensus emerging among scientists on the broad outlines of the changes needed. If economic progress is to be sustained, we need to replace the fossil-fuelbased, automobile-centered, throwaway economy with a new economic model. Instead of being based on fossil fuels, the new economy will be powered by abundant sources of renewable energy: wind, solar, geothermal, hydropower, and biofuels.

Instead of being centered around automobiles, future transportation systems will be far more diverse, widely employing light rail, buses, and bicycles as well as cars. The goal will be to maximize mobility, not automobile ownership.

The throwaway economy will be replaced by a comprehensive reuse/recycle economy. Consumer products from cars to computers will be designed so that they can be disassembled into their component parts and completely recycled. Throwaway products such as single-use beverage containers will be phased out.

The good news is that we can already see glimpses here and there of what this new economy looks like. We have the technologies to build it—including, for example, gas-electric hybrid cars, advanced-design wind turbines, highly efficient refrigerators, and water-efficient irrigation systems.

We can see how to build the new economy brick by brick. With each wind farm, rooftop solar panel, paper recycling facility, bicycle path, and reforestation program, we move closer to an economy that can sustain economic progress. If, instead, we continue on the current economic path, the question is not whether environmental deterioration will lead to economic decline, but when. No economy, however technologically advanced, can survive the collapse of its environmental support systems.

The Nature of the New World

We recently entered a new century, but we are also entering a new world, one where the collisions between our demands and the earth’s capacity to satisfy them are becoming daily events. It may be another crop-withering heat wave, another village abandoned because of invading sand dunes, or another aquifer pumped dry. If we do not act quickly to reverse the trends, these seemingly isolated events will come more and more frequently, accumulating and combining to determine our future.

Resources that accumulated over eons of geological time are being consumed in a single human lifespan. We are crossing natural thresholds that we cannot see and violating deadlines that we do not recognize. These deadlines, determined by nature, are not politically negotiable.

Nature has many thresholds that we discover only when it is too late. In our fast-forward world, we learn that we have crossed them only after the fact, leaving little time to adjust. For example, when we exceed the sustainable catch of a fishery, the stocks begin to shrink. Once this threshold is crossed, we have a limited time in which to back off and lighten the catch. If we fail to meet this deadline, breeding populations shrink to where the fishery is no longer viable, and it collapses.

We know from earlier civilizations that the lead indicators of economic decline were environmental, not economic. The trees went first, then the soil, and finally the civilization itself. To archeologists, the sequence is all too familiar. Our situation today is far more challenging because in addition to shrinking forests and eroding soils, we must deal with falling water tables, more frequent crop-withering heat waves, collapsing fisheries, expanding deserts, deteriorating rangelands, dying coral reefs, melting glaciers, rising seas, more-powerful storms, disappearing species, and, soon, shrinking oil supplies. Although these ecologically destructive trends have been evident for some time, and some have been reversed at the national level, not one has been reversed at the global level.

The bottom line is that the world is in what ecologists call an "overshoot-and-collapse" mode. Demand has exceeded the sustainable yield of natural systems at the local level countless times in the past. Now, for the first time, it is doing so at the global level. Forests are shrinking for the world as a whole. Fishery collapses are widespread. Grasslands are deteriorating on every continent. Water tables are falling in many countries. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions exceed CO2 fixation everywhere.

In 2002, a team of scientists led by Mathis Wackernagel, who now heads the Global Footprint Network, concluded that humanity’s collective demands first surpassed the earth’s regenerative capacity around 1980. Their study, published by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, estimated that global demands in 1999 exceeded that capacity by 20 percent. The gap, growing by 1 percent or so a year, is now much wider. We are meeting current demands by consuming the earth’s natural assets, setting the stage for decline and collapse.

In a rather ingenious approach to calculating the human physical presence on the planet, Paul MacCready, the founder and Chairman of AeroVironment and designer of the first solar-powered aircraft, has calculated the weight of all vertebrates on the land and in the air. He notes that when agriculture began, humans, their livestock, and pets together accounted for less than 0.1 percent of the total. Today, he estimates, this group accounts for 98 percent of the earth’s total vertebrate biomass, leaving only 2 percent for the wild portion, the latter including all the deer, wildebeests, elephants, great cats, birds, small mammals, and so forth.

Ecologists are intimately familiar with the overshoot-andcollapse phenomenon. One of their favorite examples began in 1944, when the Coast Guard introduced 29 reindeer on remote St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea to serve as the backup food source for the 19 men operating a station there.

After World War II ended a year later, the base was closed and the men left the island. When U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist David Kline visited St. Matthew in 1957, he discovered a thriving population of 1,350 reindeer feeding on the four-inch-thick mat of lichen that covered the 332-square-kilometer (128-square-mile) island. In the absence of any predators, the population was exploding. By 1963, it had reached 6,000. He returned to St. Matthew in 1966 and discovered an island strewn with reindeer skeletons and not much lichen. Only 42 of the reindeer survived: 41 females and 1 not entirely healthy male. There were no fawns. By 1980 or so, the remaining reindeer had died off.

Like the deer on St. Matthew Island, we too are overconsuming our natural resources. Overshoot leads sometimes to decline and sometimes to a complete collapse. It is not always clear which it will be. In the former, a remnant of the population or economic activity survives in a resource-depleted environment. For example, as the environmental resource base of Easter Island in the South Pacific deteriorated, its population declined from a peak of 20,000 several centuries ago to today’s population of fewer than 4,000. In contrast, the 500-year-old Norse settlement in Greenland collapsed during the 1400s, disappearing entirely in the face of environmental adversity.

As of 2005, some 42 countries have populations that are stable or declining slightly in size as a result of falling birth rates. But now for the first time ever, demographers are projecting population declines in some countries because of rising death rates, among them Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Swaziland. In the absence of an accelerated shift to smaller families, this list of countries is likely to grow much longer in the years immediately ahead.

The most recent mid-level U.N. demographic projections show world population increasing from 6.1 billion in 2000 to 9.1 billion in 2050. But such an increase seems highly unlikely, considering the deterioration in life-support systems now under way in much of the world. Will we not reach 9.1 billion because we quickly eradicate global poverty and lower birth rates? Or because we fail to do so and death rates begin to rise, as they are already doing in many African countries? We thus face two urgent major challenges: restructuring the global economy and stabilizing world population.

Oil Addiction & World Hunger

Even as the economy’s environmental support systems are deteriorating, the world is pumping oil with reckless abandon.

Leading geologists now think oil production may soon peak and turn downward. This collision between the ever-growing demand for oil and the earth’s finite resources is but the latest in a long series of collisions. Although no one knows exactly when oil production will peak, supply is already lagging behind demand, driving prices upward.

In this new world, the price of oil begins to set the price of food, not so much because of rising fuel costs for farmers and food processors but more because almost everything we eat can be converted into fuel for cars. In this new world of high oil prices, supermarkets and service stations will compete in commodity markets for basic food commodities such as wheat, corn, soybeans, and sugarcane. Wheat going into the market can be converted into bread for supermarkets or ethanol for service stations. Soybean oil can go onto supermarket shelves or it can go to service stations to be used as diesel fuel. In effect, owners of the world’s 800 million cars will be competing for food resources with the 1.2 billion people living on less than $1 a day.

Faced with a seemingly insatiable demand for automotive fuel, farmers will want to clear more and more of the remaining tropical forests to produce sugarcane, oil palms, and other highyielding fuel crops. Already, billions of dollars of private capital are moving into this effort. In effect, the rising price of oil is generating a massive new threat to the earth’s biological diversity. As the demand for farm commodities climbs, it is shifting the focus of international trade concerns from the traditional goal of assured access to markets to one of assured access to supplies.

Countries heavily dependent on imported grain for food are beginning to worry that buyers for fuel distilleries may outbid them for supplies. As oil security deteriorates, so, too, will food security. As the role of oil recedes, the process of globalization will be reversed in fundamental ways. As the world turned to oil during the last century, the energy economy became increasingly globalized, with the world depending heavily on a handful of countries in the Middle East for energy supplies. Now as the world turns to wind, solar cells, and geothermal energy in this century, we are witnessing the localization of the world energy economy.

The globalization of the world food economy will also be reversed, as the higher price of oil raises the cost of transporting food internationally. In response, food production and consumption will become much more localized, leading to diets based more on locally produced food and seasonal availability.

The world is facing the emergence of a geopolitics of scarcity, which is already highly visible in the efforts by China, India, and other developing countries to ensure their access to oil supplies. In the future, the issue will be who gets access to not only Middle Eastern oil but also Brazilian ethanol and North American grain. Pressures on land and water resources, already excessive in most of the world, will intensify further as the demand for biofuels climbs. This geopolitics of scarcity is an early manifestation of civilization in an overshoot-and-collapse mode, much like the one that emerged among the Mayan cities competing for food in that civilization’s waning years.

You do not need to be an ecologist to see that if recent environmental trends continue, the global economy eventually will come crashing down. It is not knowledge that we lack. At issue is whether national governments can stabilize population and restructure the economy before time runs out. Looking at what is happening in China helps us to see the urgency of acting quickly.

Learning from China

For many years environmentalists have pointed to the United States as the world’s leading consumer, noting that 5 percent of the world’s people were consuming nearly a third of the earth’s resources. Although that was true for some time, it no longer is. China has replaced the United States as the leading consumer of basic commodities.

Among the five basic food, energy, and industrial commodities— grain and meat, oil and coal, and steel—consumption in China has eclipsed that of the United States in all but oil. China has opened a wide lead with grain, consuming 380 million tons in 2005 versus 260 million tons in the United States. Among the big three grains, China leads in the consumption of both wheat and rice and trails the United States only in corn.

Although eating hamburgers is a defining element of the U.S. China’s 2005 meat consumption of 67 million tons is far above the 38 million tons eaten in the United States.

While U.S. meat intake is rather evenly distributed between beef, pork, and poultry, in China pork totally dominates. Indeed, half the world’s pigs are now found in China.

With oil, the United States was still solidly in the lead in 2004, using more than three times as much as China—20.4 million barrels per day versus 6.5 million barrels. But U.S. oil use expanded by only 15 percent between 1994 and 2004, while use in China more than doubled. Having recently eclipsed Japan as an oil consumer, China now trails only the United States.

Energy use in China also obviously includes coal, which supplies nearly two thirds of the country’s energy. China’s annual burning of 960 million tons easily exceeds the 560 million tons used in the United States. With this level of coal use and with oil and natural gas use also climbing fast, it is only a matter of time before China’s carbon emissions match those of the United States. Then the world will have two major countries driving climate change.

China’s consumption of steel, a basic indicator of industrial development, is now nearly two and a half times that of the United States: 258 million tons to 104 million tons in 2003. As China has moved into the construction phase of development, building hundreds of thousands of factories and high-rise apartment and office buildings, steel consumption has climbed to levels never seen in any country.

With consumer goods, China leads in the number of cell phones, television sets, and refrigerators. The United States still leads in the number of personal computers, though likely not for much longer, and in automobiles.

That China has overtaken the United States in consumption of basic resources gives us license to ask the next question. What if China catches up with the United States in consumption per person? If the Chinese economy continues to grow at 8 percent a year, by 2031 income per person will equal that in the United States in 2004. If we further assume that consumption patterns of China’s affluent population in 2031, by then 1.45 billion, will be roughly similar to those of Americans in 2004,we have a startling answer to our question.

At the current annual U.S. grain consumption of 900 kilograms per person, including industrial use, China’s grain consumption in 2031 would equal roughly two thirds of the current world grain harvest. If paper use per person in China in 2031 reaches the current U.S. level, this translates into 305 million tons of paper—double existing world production of 161 million tons. There go the world’s forests. And if oil consumption per person reaches the U.S. level by 2031, China will use 99 million barrels of oil a day. The world is currently producing 84 million barrels a day and may never produce much more. This helps explain why China’s fast-expanding use of oil is already helping to create a politics of scarcity. Or consider cars. If China one day should have three cars for every four people, as the United States now does, its fleet would total 1.1 billion vehicles, well beyond the current world fleet of 800 million. Providing the roads, highways, and parking lots for such a fleet would require paving an area roughly equal to China’s land in rice, its principal food staple.

The inevitable conclusion to be drawn from these projections is that there are not enough resources for China to reach U.S. consumption levels. The western economic model—the fossil fuel- based, automobile-centered, throwaway economy—will not work for China’s 1.45 billion in 2031. If it does not work for China, it will not work for India either, which by 2031 is projected to have even more people than China. Nor will it work for the other 3 billion people in developing countries who are also dreaming the “American dream.” And in an increasingly integrated world economy, where countries everywhere are competing for the same resources—the same oil, grain, and iron ore—the existing economic model will not work for industrial countries either.

China, India Seen Setting Stage for Environment-Friendly World

Published on January 12, 2006 by Agence France Presse

Energy guzzlers China and India are often blamed for some of the world's environmental problems, but a new study says the two most populous nations may well set the stage for a clean and green Earth.

The two countries are mastering energy-efficient technologies, implementing cheap and environmentally-responsible transportation systems, and adopting new water harvesting techniques as models for a sustainable economy, says the annual report of the US-based Worldwatch Institute.

"China and India are positioned to leapfrog today's industrial powers and become world leaders in sustainable energy and agriculture within a decade," the president of the environmental research group, Christopher Flavin, predicted at a news conference.

"We were encouraged to find that a growing number of opinion leaders in China and India now recognize that the resource-intensive model for economic growth can't work in the 21st century," he said.

China's world leading solar-industry already provides water heating for 35 million buildings, and India's pioneering use of rainwater harvesting brings clean water to tens of thousands of homes, according to the 244-page report.

Zjeng Bijian, head of China Economic Reform, an academic group, called in the report for "a new path of industrialization based on technology, low consumption of resources, low environmental pollution and the optimal allocation of human resources."

Zjeng holds senior posts in academic and party organizations in China and his non-governmental group has drafted key reports for five Chinese national party congresses.

Sunita Narain of India's Center for Science and Environment said in the report that "the South -- India, China and all their neighbours -- has no choice but to reinvent the development trajectory.

A country heavily dependent on coal, China's ambitious renewable energy law enforced this month stands a good chance of jumpstarting windpower, biofuels, and other new energy options, the report said.

The world's most populated nation has already successfully pioneered the use of small wind turbines, hydro generators, and biogas plants for power generation in remote rural areas.

China is world leader not only in solar hot water technology but also in producing super-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs.

It is also aiming for an ingenious bus rapid transit system that combines the speed of a subway with the affordability of a bus. Trials have been held and bus ridership has jumped five fold during rush hour, the report said.

Electric bicycles are also becoming popular, with domestic sales having reportedly trebled the projected sales of cars.

India, which has a long tradition of promoting renewable energy, recently built the world's fourth largest wind power industry and the largest among developing economies.

It wants to increase renewable energy's share of its power from five percent to 20-25 percent.

"Armed with creative solutions to critical problems and with evidence of the futility of current development paths and the superiority of the alternatives, Chinese and Indian pioneers are providing models for a new and sustainable economy," the report said.

This is seen as welcome relief as China and India -- with 40 percent of the world's people between them -- are set to join already industrialized economies as major consumers of resources and polluters of local and global ecosystems.

In fact, rapid economic growth has already taken a toll on the environment in the two countries.

China, for example, has just eight percent of the world's fresh water to meet the needs of 22 percent of the world's population, the report said.

In India, it added, only about 10 percent of sewage is treated, and both urban and industrial pollutants are commonly dumped directly into waterways.

"Rising demand for energy, food and raw materials by 2.5 billion Chinese and Indians is already having ripple effects worldwide," Flavin said.

While China and India have often been blamed for driving up the price of oil and other commodities, Flavin said one of the most striking conclusions of his group's analysis was "how dominant the US still is when it comes to resources and pollution."

With oil, for example, the United States imports nearly four times as much as China, despite having only one fourth as many people.

"Americans wondering why the price of oil is so high need only to look in the mirror," Flavin said, pointing out that "a new economic path is at least as crucial for the United States as it is for China or India."

Climate Action NOW!

Dear friend or activist,

We've all watched in horror as nature obliterated most of New Orleans. We've all been frightened by an unrelenting onslaught of terrifying news, images and experts telling us that greenhouse gases from industrial production are changing the entire planet to the point where our very existence is threatened. And many of us are paralyzed about this.

It's all too much! Way beyond what a three-million-year-old evolving primate mind can grasp and manage! So I guess we should all give up and keep our heads buried in our single-issue campaigns until climate destabilization, parcel-by-parcel, peoples-by-peoples have everything and everyone they ever loved destroyed before their very eyes.

Personally, over the last thirty years, I've seen too many of the alternatives to honestly believe that it is impossible to make the shift away from fossil fuels and nuclear power sources. Unfortunately, there are over a million ways to convince ourselves that it can't happen (e.g. as long as Bush and the Republicrats are in power, as long as 9/11 isn't exposed as a Bush administration plot, as long as humanity hasn't converted to biocentrism and Deep Ecology en masse, as long as capitalism exists, etc.)

Tragically, we didn't get a climate movement up to speed back in 1980, when NASA's James Hansen first sounded the alarm. So now it is too late for reforms, compatible with capitalism's endless growth on a finite planet ideology, to save us. But that doesn't mean we and many of Earth's precious habitats can't be saved. It just means we have to look outside the box to the solutions and plans that brilliant groups and individuals have been developing for 35 years and more.

Every day, more an more people are calling for a new Marshall Plan, or an effort to convert "at wartime speed." It means we have to get serious about organizing our Climate Crisis action movement. It means we have to get serious about taking these solutions out to the duped masses, even in the red states, and teaching them. Most people have never even heard of bioregionalism, green cities and permaculture. How could they possibly get serious about these environmental initiatives if they have never even heard about them?

THE GREAT CONVERSION

From Fossil Fuel Economics to Sustainable Localized Economies
Proposal for a Conference to Develop Legislation and Budgets
With People from Climate Change * Peak Oil * Ecotopian Design * Labor * Agriculture

If humanity is to survive the threat posed by accumulating greenhouse gases, and the end of the age of oil, it will be because of a great conversion made rapidly to convert economies-in a time frame similar to The Great Depression-to one that uses only 20 percent of the fossil fuels currently consumed globally. I believe that our descendants will look back upon this time as The Great Conversion.

So much of activist energy and resources around the world is drained away in the battles to fight what's wrong with the plutocracy that is ravaging the lives of billions of people, and savagely ripping apart the very fabric of nature. Not nearly enough has been put to the task of strategically organizing the grass roots to bring about the changes that must happen in the next decade because of the order of magnitude and urgency of the climate crisis and peak oil limitations.

There is a climate-crisis clock running, even if we don't know what time it is. CLIP

January 4, 2006

S: Matthew dear, hi there! Before we get into questions, please tell me if in the continuum, where there's no linear time, January 1, 2006 has any significance.

MATTHEW: Mother, happy new year to you and to all others on Earth! The ending of an "old" year and entry into a new one holds great importance to you, whether that year starts on January 1 or another date, and because of this, yes, it does indeed have significance in the continuum. Also more on Earth than you may imagine! You think of a year's beginning as a clean slate with new opportunities—to learn, to better relationships or establish new ones, to improve in ways that give little self-satisfaction, to grow professionally and, hopefully, spiritually. The energy put forth in those collective feelings is like fireworks in Earth's field of potential. There is energy in the revelry itself, the excitement of the celebrations that are televised around the world, and even in simply having survived the "old" year.

Yes, there's a momentary lull in the days immediately following, but that is more like an "aaah" of satisfaction and not the kind of energy output that would dim the effects of the "fireworks."

That is true of any year on your planet. This new year is light years, if you will, ahead of all time in your recorded history because of what was set in motion during the year just past. Your last year was pivotal in dislodging seats of darkness, and 2006 will produce results that will be far-reaching. Some developments within the United States government are evident already, even in the media, as the line of dominoes grows in preparation for the last ones to fall harder.

Please bear with me in this repetition: Changes must first come in the United States because that country is perceived by the world as the most powerful. I'm not saying that perception is wrong, because the US has become the most influential country in other nations‚ affairs, but it was those perceptions that manifested the actual influence—that is how the universe operates. So then, once the dominoes are falling in the US, the momentum of change will spread around the world to every nation, and ultimately all will have wise and just governing bodies and sound economies.

Before the questions, I want to welcome and endorse the message from Hatonn that will follow my own. And Mother, I'm going to add your expressed feelings to him about distributing it, and his reminder to you of what he has told you before: "Not all light work is pleasant." He didn't have to tell you that all light work is imperative.

Now let us get into the questions.

S: Do you take special liberties because I'm your mother?

MATTHEW: Oh my! My thoughts were on answering the first question and I didn't see that coming. Mother, dearest soul to me, I suppose I do. Maybe it's to preserve for both of us our mother and son relationship that in your mind is lost because you think of me "flying all over space" in bodies that fit wherever I am. And for me, it's being your teenager causing some little annoyance that, as usually happened, evaporated into a hug. So may we leave that in?

S: With that, you know we can. OK, the questions. I'm interested in hearing what you'll say about this request: "Please comment on the premise of The Da Vinci Code that the Holy Grail was Mary Magdalene because she was carrying Jesus‚ child."

MATTHEW: I think it is an illuminating step in the right direction. The Holy Grail is the soul. Consider this: For two millennia the search has been going on for some "object" whose identity hasn't been agreed upon, but nothing fitting its ascribed power has been found. Simply, you weren't spiritually ready before to understand that throughout the ages, individuals‚ souls were urging them to find what was within themselves, and so the march continued to locate what was considered to be the most powerful force in the world. The soul IS that!

S: So there are as many Holy Grails as there are souls in the universe.

MATTHEW: Each is an integral and inseparable part of the Whole, Creator, Source, and in that respect All is One, not many.

S: I see. I think this is a good place for you to answer the writer who would like you to explain why you refer to Creator and God as two separate entities.

MATTHEW: They are different entities. Creator is the Supreme Being of the cosmos and God, by whatever name, is Supreme Being of this universe, which is one of several in the cosmos. Please notice that I didn't say "separate" as in the writer's statement. Just as every soul in the universe is an inseparable part of God, God is an inseparable part of Creator. Mother, with the addition of Hatonn's important and timely message, our space is more limited than usual, but this is such a vital area to be understood that I ask you to copy the book material that explains the difference. Please save the other questions for the next message—since you have them ready, perhaps we can do that in a week or so. Thank you, and now I send loving wishes for abundant blessings to all throughout your new year.

HIERARCHY OF CREATOR

MATTHEW: To understand the purpose of our lives, there must be an understanding of our relationship with our Creator. It is a relationship as simply stated as the father and his children, but the origin of our souls within Creator cannot be stated that easily. Creator/Creation is the proper designation of the Totality. It also is the most descriptive, encompassing both the total essence and the creative action. For simplicity, we usually say only Creator.

There was nothing before Creator, and nothing except the sleeping power of Creator until Its self-expression. In that moment, which some have called the "Big Bang," came the First Expression, the original fragmentation of Creator's love and wisdom and power into soul entities. The term "fragmentation" in this context is not a severing or a breaking down of the whole, it is a sharing or bestowing upon the divisions the same properties of the whole.

However it may seem an irreverent analogy, I shall liken the hierarchy of Creator to a pie because it is a good visual aid. The entire pie is the soul of Creator: the omnipotent Totality of the cosmos. At the center resides the mind of Creator: the residence of omniscience. Starting at that central point, imagine a series of concentric rings superimposed over the whole pie. The rings indicate the spheres of the hierarchy, which are flexible divisions of Creator.

At this point the visual aid requires an unusual perspective for an accurate representation of happenings. Imagine the pie cut into countless slices whose widest ends touch the limitless mind of Creator and become narrower as the slices enter rings successively farther from that beginning. The slivers represent the fragments of Creator that have been created throughout all time into independently experiencing entities. Every tiny portion contains proportionally exactly the same ingredients as the total pie. It is the same with all of creation. NOTHING is separate from Creator.

When the soul of Creator first divided Itself, each of Its fragments within that first sphere had the identical powers of Creator. Those fragments are the highest angels. There is no form within this first sphere, only perfect light and purity. This is where the Christed energy generates, and where the paternal power called Archangel Michael and the other archangels reside.

During that time of pure awareness, Creator gave to all the angelic portions of Itself the ultimate of gifts, free will with its inherent power of co-creating ability. Thus, in the next expression, Creator and the archangels created the next level of angels, not as close to Creator mind as the archangels, but still collective light entities in purity, without form or substance.

In conjunction with Creator, the angelic realms created the third sphere of being, life form potentials that, after timeless reflection, at will could be discarnate or could manifest in form. These life form potentials became the celestial bodies of the universes and the gods who later were dispersed to reign over them. One of the gods became the supreme being of our universe and, with Creator, created all life within it. Since our god is called God by some Earth religions and that is how you think of Him, Mother, that is how I shall refer to Him.

For ever-greater experiencing, God's original beings, which are called root souls, expressed themselves into divisions called soul fragments or soul sparks, or God fragments or God sparks. Similarly and successively, those soul entities divided themselves into sparklets, who divided themselves into subsparklets. Entities created by further fragmentation also are called subsparklets. This procession does not define soul evolution, but only the order of lineage. The myriad individual, independent and inviolate lifetimes of every soul at all levels of fragmentation are called personages.

These or other designations may be given to show the order of lineage of the souls in the various spheres radiating outward from the mind of Creator, but simply "soul" is enough. There is no difference in each one's connection with Creator or its makeup in proportional measure. ALWAYS the life force of even the most minute independent soul is its own inviolate self connected inseparably to Creator, just as every single cell in your body is both a viable, independently functioning cell and at the same time is an inseparable composite part of you.

S: Where does our current population fit into the subdivided spheres?

MATTHEW: Primarily at subsparklet level. Remember, Mother, that's NOT soul evolution, only the order of emergence of the personage souls. I think your expression "old soul" pertains to the evolution part and not the order of lineage. Those may have nothing at all to do with each other, because spiritual growth -- or not -- is determined by each soul's free will choices and not how many lifetimes it took to make the choices that elevated it to a higher level of evolution.

S: Yes, I see. Thank you. Is Creator the supreme being of the cosmos and God is an assistant?

MATTHEW: No. Cosmos and universe often are used interchangeably as synonymous terms, but each universe is only one part of the cosmos. Our universe is but one of several, and each universe has its own god as its supreme being. Because people on Earth are not aware of either those other universes or the creation hierarchy, God is the name given to Creator by some religions. This is the use of a generic term for a formal name, like naming a baby girl, Girl. And it is not uncommon or incorrect for God to be referred to as "our creator," because He is, but that adds just another element of confusion regarding the two beings, Creator and God, and the name.

I don't know how the error in name started. It may have been some deviation of reference in deepest antiquity, when it was known that Creator/Creation is the Source, All That Is, I AM, Almighty, Oneness, Totality or other designation to denote Creator in Its highest station of all the cosmos. The name doesn't matter. When love and reverence are given by souls to God in name and to Creator in meaning, the communion of those souls with Creator is honored in fullness.

The Trinity of the Christian churches could be interpreted as this: Father (Creator: the highest power in the cosmos, who is called God or other names in Earth religions). Son (God, who is the creation -- the "son" -- of Creator and is the supreme being of our universe and who is not generally recognized on Earth as different from Creator. Holy Ghost (the highest angelic realm, also called the Christed realm, where the highest beings are total love expressed as light; and from whence come the souls who have incarnated as major religious figures throughout this universe, including Jesus and Buddha).

Regardless of the difference in names and interpretations, the interconnectedness of this triune order is the same. And there is no difference in the divine order of the Almighty Omnipotent and Omniscient Being and Its subsequent powers, only in the names as they have evolved.

GOD

S: Do God and Creator differ in any way besides the size of their "jurisdiction"?

MATTHEW: There are two essential differences. God is in effect Creator for this universe. He is Creator mind in knowingness, Creator heart in love, Creator power in authority and responsibility for this universe. Thus God is the sum of all universal intelligence, wisdom, knowledge and power, and there is no difference in its quality or extent from the very same in Creator. Because any part of the Totality contains all the aspects of Totality, our God is a perfect, undiluted expression of Creator, but with these essential differences.

First, a vital function of Creator's core essence is without activity. It's like the axle of a wheel providing a stable aspect to the other parts that are in motion, and that stability enables the constant motion of all Creator's other aspects. If that stable functioning ceased, all order would cease and there would be Chaos again. That core essence is the center of order and life in the cosmos, and without the measured pace of energy or frequencies, there could be no manifestation of any form of life.

For God, it is a different story. As the responsible essence throughout this universe, He is in all aspects more than functional without activity. God is the magnified active force of Creator for this universe where He, with Creator, initiated all life forms and all order. Nothing exists in this universe that is not of God's creating in conjunction with Creator.

As total love and light in essence, God is the source of the love and light of our universe, and all of His creatures thrive because of this. The highest energy of light is love, a fluctuating, expanding and contracting motion ever increasing in its power to encompass more loving capacity and sensation. Love is infinite and light cannot be captured, only directed. That is the essence of individual souls interacting with God.

Because life in all forms is of God and inseparable from Him, it can be said that humans are made in His image by attributing to Him His human creations. The idea of a human appearance and the material of which physical bodies are made came from the mind of God.

With the creation of life in our universe He set in motion the unstoppable momentum of laws that govern everything from the orbiting of galaxies to a seed knowing when to emerge from its covering and start growing. For the immeasurable time since this was started, only the refinements of energy direction through technology have changed the original course of divine energy's purpose and motion. There cannot be any change within energy itself because energy IS creation. It is how energy is tapped into and used that is the key to creating.

In the beginning, all creation within this universe was flawless, pure, holy and loving. All was in perfect harmony and union, without divisibility or dishonor or sorrow. Life was inherently meant to be lived in such a state. Creator intended free will to be a gift, not a curse, but it is possible that this Gift of all gifts, the total freedom of souls to choose, has been so abused and misused that it cannot be regarded as the golden gift it once was. In some universes free will is unknown, we are told. Even parts of this universe have absorbed the gift into such radiance that it no longer is an individual decision. On Earth free will is the order of life wherein the hand of God is ever present in observation, but never in restriction.

The second essential difference between Creator and God is this: Whereas Creator is aware of each individual life throughout the cosmos, there is no standard for Its involvement in the lives of the souls. God is not only aware of each soul's station in this universe, He knows all their heartaches, secret dreams, torments, joys, fears. ALL is known to God.

When Creator left Its state of sublime stillness, the purpose was to experience through creating. As the perfect expression of Creator, God has the same purpose, and His sentient aspect is within every one of His creations in any incarnate or discarnate life form. He can feel the emotions and physical sensations felt by all souls in any form, and not for even one instant is He detached from the total experiencing of every soul in our universe. This is true regardless of souls' status in spiritual evolvement and free will choices, and it pertains to every life form within the animal and plant kingdoms.

At a much higher level, He experiences the anguish of Earth in her present turmoil and heavy negativity, and the sensations of every other celestial body as well. I cannot state too often the inseparability of God from every life form in His universe, and that same interconnectedness is true of each soul with every other soul in all life forms.

S: Since Creator doesn't become involved in our lives, does that mean He (It?) doesn't feel the physical pain and emotional suffering of souls, such as God does?

MATTHEW: Mother, "It" used as a pronoun for Creator is not demeaning. Not to be compared with your "it" indicating a thing rather than a being, It as applied to Creator is akin to the "color" white: White is not devoid of color, it is ALL color, and from white, all colors of the universe are refracted into their own essences. And, although God is commonly referred to by your pronoun "He" -- which is why we use that in our speaking with you -- God is neither male nor female, or He is perfectly both as the ultimate in androgynous energy balance.

Now then, Creator does indeed experience feelings of humankind, and to a far vaster height of sentience than the capacity of your third density bodies, but It does not become involved or give personal response to a soul's situation. God, on the other hand, constantly has in motion all avenues of potential assistance for His souls within their pre-birth agreement choices.

(excerpts from Revelations for a New Era)

December 31, 2005

HATONN: I bid you "Good evening," Suzy, with thanks for receiving me in these last hours of your year 2005. I ask that you send out my message with the next one from Matthew.

This is Hatonn speaking in my capacity as director of communications between Earth and all points elsewhere during the era of Earth changes. You may know of me as commander of an intergalactic fleet. That is another of my "hats," but in this moment, my focus is communications about another area of my activity, what you commonly refer to as NESARA. I am here to give a definitive statement in particular, but not exclusively, to all who have been working diligently to initiate NESARA's wide-reaching reforms and now don't know what to believe.

The National Economic Security and Reformation Act—please note this accurate name—is as real as anything else on Earth, so to all skeptics, please put to rest the impression that it is merely a wish in the minds of some who intensely desire a legislated remedy to your world's problems. Nevertheless, that view does have some validity. Like everything else in the universe, this Act's formation was preceded by and manifested through thought forms. You are inured to living within manmade laws, so we had to put this within an acceptable legal framework. In accordance with universal laws, the framework had to specify means to achieve the Act's objectives so the universe knows what situations to present in aid of manifesting the desired results of peace, justice, equitability and accountability starting in the United States and extending worldwide.

That said, a great deal of DISinformation about NESARA has been promulgated by various sources to discredit this Act. That isn't surprising, because its provisions strip them of political and economic control over you. But it's unfortunate that NESARA has become better known through those means than the correct information from knowledgeable sources, such as Matthew. Approximately two and a half years ago we asked him to issue our collective statement that described NESARA as the divinely inspired co-creation of highly evolved beings on and beyond Earth to engender good will among her humankind and a fair share of good fortune for all. Food for the spirit is not enough for the majority of your population, who are oppressed and deprived, and NESARA was born of Earth's desire for betterment in the lives of all her resident souls.

In that message Matthew also spoke of Dove's credible reports, and at that point and for a time afterwards, she did faithfully report what she was told by lighted souls both on and off-planet. That changed about two years ago, when it became evident from our higher vantage point that the control of the ones we call "dark" was sufficient to prevent NESARA's implementation well past the optimum universal timing. Ah yes, the movement of celestial bodies has great bearing on what happens in your world, and they don't wait for procrastinators. To adhere with that timeframe, we opened new avenues to accomplish the identical aims of NESARA, more slowly, but with equally certain outcome.

Dove's preoccupation with the success of the program in its exact design that was the basis of her reports clouded her receptivity to the new multi-faceted course. In spirit this course is aligned with NESARA's provisions, but it can move independent of the Act's restrictive legal requirements that the dark ones were manipulating to their advantage. Dove's dedication that had been admirable in its fervor and exhaustiveness turned into egotism with her choice to report what she felt would be more effective than our new direction. Light and egotism aren't compatible, and with her change in attitude, her light faded. She lost her former high connections along with her ability to discern that she was reaching dark entities or to properly evaluate information from Earth sources. The natural consequence is the inaccurate information she has been issuing.

Until a very short time ago, that made no difference at all in the "behind the scenes" progress. Although further efforts in the old direction were futile in one respect, in another, and far more important respect, they were powerful. The light generated by the intent of all involved enabled the "lift-off" and then sustained energy momentum of the new processes to fulfill NESARA's objectives. But Dove's recent contentions that are strikingly without factual basis have caused considerable confusion. Introducing this kind of energy attachment is not helping to propel our activities‚ momentum to surge pace, and that's why I am telling you what has transpired. The energy of your belief that NESARA's objectives ARE being met, albeit on a parallel track, is as imperative now as before.

This is not a place for anger or shame, but rather sadness that the soul who once correctly reported on NESARA unwittingly veered off the light course. We honor Dove's service within her original mission and we beam intense light for her return. We beam the same to the dark entities that falsely claim to be me or other beings of light, and to the receivers who believe them and send out that false information. Be keenly discerning about all channeled messages! Especially in this late phase of Earth's transition out of third density, knowing what is true and what is false is critical for your own sakes! We urge you to look beyond the mass of muddled information about NESARA, Second Coming, First Contact, disastrous destruction to land masses, nuclear war potential, a dying planet—listen to what your souls are telling you!

Hold within your hearts the vision of the world you want for yourselves and your families, for all the inheritors of Earth:

A world where peace and love replace war and hatred; where governments are led by just, prudent and spiritual women and men, not power-mongers led by darkness; where fair distribution of all resources replaces the extremes of egregious greed and desperate poverty; where universal and planetary truths replace the web of lies that has controlled your lives.

The concept and intent of NESARA is to help you create that world on Earth. You do not have to know of this Act or, if you do, you don't have to believe in its actuality—wanting the same intentions that it embodies is what counts. IT ALREADY HAS COUNTED! You are reading this in the early days of your year 2006, when wars, suffering, tyranny, corruption and the like can be seen wherever you look. But in this very same instant in the continuum, where everything is NOW, Earth is peaceful and beautiful and all of that negativity is gone. She has reached her chosen destination where low-vibration manifestations don't exist. The world of your vision, the "future" world you are helping to create right now, already IS!

LOVE and PEACE

New Year's Message

Hathors — 12.31.05 — Bangkok

We indeed find it interesting that we are giving this message on New Year's Eve in Bangkok, Thailand, one full day before New Year's Eve will appear in the United States. Surely this demonstrates that time, as you construct it, is an illusion.

We have mentioned previously that time, as you perceive it and experience it, is changing radically and will continue to go through metamorphosis, carrying your global culture into, if there is such a word, instaneity.

At a hyperdimensional level of consciousness, all events, past present and future are occurring simultaneously in one moment. This moment of totality can only be experienced directly from dimensions of consciousness outside of time itself. This is one reason it is so difficult to understand, as there is little reference in your world.

As your global culture comes closer to the instaniety, to use the word we have coined, events will transpire, or seem to transpire, more quickly. This will create undue stress on paradigms of reality and your coping mechanisms.

Indeed, we see this coming year of your time as an intensification of what has already transpired in the last year, continued Earth changes, more erratic weather patterns, and all that is implied by such changes shall escalate.

As a collective you are not handling the energies of transformation from deep space in ways that will insure your survival. Corporate greed continues to manipulate your media and your governments. You are lied to on every front, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify what is true from what is false. All of this is to be expected. The old guard will not relinquish its power easily, and you are witnessing the power struggles of an old dinosaur tied economically, as it is, to oil. The pun intended.

As oil reserves dissipate, and as water becomes more scarce due to global warming, you can expect an intensification of global conflict.

The question for each individual is how to navigate these treacherous times as the planet enters ever more volatile periods of transformation. Essentially, although it is very complex, the resolution, at an individual level, has to do with vibration.

What ring of reality you are resonating with will determine your destiny and your outcome. Do not be seduced into fear, for it is simply a tool of manipulation by those who wish to control you. We have said previously that the need for ecstasy and joy is paramount. We are still of this opinion and would recommend that you read previous postings on simple ways to experiment with these evolutionary states of mind and body.

We see no value in identifying specific Earth changes we sense in your near future nor in discussing the weather patterns, since there is little that can be done to avert them. Rather we would turn your attention from fear and paranoia to a self-created place of spiritual peace and joy. This would serve you far more than living in the states of fear and paranoia.

We said earlier that the "ring of reality" you lived in would affect your destiny. What we mean by this is that individuals, groups and cultures tend to "nest" in specific vibrational fields that can be conceived of much like the rings around your planet Saturn. (Although this has nothing to do with Saturn, it is a good metaphor.)

What is truly fascinating about this is the relativity of perception.

For demonstration purposes, let's say that you are living in the "ring of reality" that holds that you have a right to the world's resources and the one who gets them first is the winner. You would then be quite close to the center of action in the cultural ring currently existing in your global culture. If, however, you lived your life with the idea that the world's resources belonged to all peoples and that no one had a right to them, you would be very far afield in the outer rings, far from the current cultural predominance.

However, this is all potentially about to change.

If Earth, or to be more accurate, humanity survives the transition into the New Age of this Millennium, the rings will shift and those who hold that they have a right to the world's resources to the exclusion of others will find themselves suddenly on the outer rings, for the nexus of global power will have shifted to an understanding of global responsibility, global stewardship, and global community.

All of this is fascinating to us, but the crucial question for you, as an individual, is how to live your life in a time when there is such flux, chaos, and volatility, for you are living in the midst of a dying culture and the birth of a new one—or to be more accurate "new ones" which have yet to be clearly defined. For if you survive as a global culture, through these times, you will find many divergent realities existing together simultaneously upon your Earth, and it shall be the end of your history as you understand it, for time will hover at the edge of oblivion and the totality of human consciousness and all its potential will spawn a new global renaissance and Earth shall become the diamond light of this galaxy.

This is the vision we hold for you in our hearts and the fascinating thing to us is that the key to all of this lies in the individual person, what each of you do, how you live your lives in these times. The choices you make in the smallest matters shall determine the destiny of your species. And so it is that we wish you joy and ecstasy in this coming year.

The Hathors

What We Don't Know Can Hurt Us

By Dave Lindorff

There is an bill in Congress to investigate Bush for impeachable crimes. Did you know that? If not, maybe you should be asking your local media outlets why you don’t know about it.

Rome--There are now eight members of Congress who have put their names to a bill calling for a special committee of the House to investigate impeachable crimes by the Bush administration. To date, all of them are Democrats.

So far, you'd be hard-pressed to know about any of this--including the very fact that Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the low-key and soft-spoken but dedicated ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, had even submitted such a bill--as well as two companion bills calling for censure of both Bush and Cheney for abuse of power.

Apparently in the editorial cloister of our once proud Fourth Estate, where decisions as to what it is safe or appropriate for us in the public to know, it has been determined that we do not need to know that the notion of impeachment of the president is starting to grow.

Most of the major corporate media have yet to let the public know that several respected polls have shown a majority of Americans to favor impeachment if Bush lied about the reasons for going to war against Iraq, which if combined with polls showing that two-thirds of Americans or more think he did lie about those reasons, tells you all you need to know about the public attitude on impeachment.

The same paternalistic and pro-administration mindset was at work when the editor and publisher of the New York Times decided a year ago to squelch for a year a story they had about the NSA warrantless spying program. They felt that we the people didn't need to know about that story in a presidential election year, even if the target of that spying may well have been the administration’s electoral opponents, just as it was in the 1972 Watergate spying scandal.

There is a clear slide towards dictatorship taking place in America. The president, it turns out, has been signing executive letters along with many of the bills Congress passes, essentially asserting that as commander-in-chief in his fake "war" on terror, he reserves the right to ignore those bills. The latest such letter was signed by him as he signed the bill banning torture. In other words, he conceded to the bill, but then said he'll authorize torture anyway if he wants to, in his role as commander in chief.

The beauty of this presidential scam is that, since the "war" on terror will never end, neither will his self-claimed draconian powers. And what is the limit of those powers? Well, basically the limit is whatever Congress and the courts tell him those limits are. And are we seeing Congress and the courts setting any limits? No.

A major part of the problem is that the media that are supposed to inform the American public about what is happening are instead dropping the ball, or even hiding it.

At the moment, I'm in Rome, trying, among other things, to look into one dark corner of the administration's crimes--the forgery of documents designed to make it appear that Iraq had an active nuclear weapons program and was trying to buy uranium. I don't know what I'll be able to find in my too short stay. An Italian parliamentary committee concluded this past fall that the forgeries were the work of long-time right-wing con-man Michael Ledeen--the guy who helped bring us the criminal Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages-and-stinger-missiles deal during the Reagan administration, along with Dewey Claridge (another Iran-Contra veteran), convicted bank swindler Ahmed Chalabi and Frank Brookes, a PR man hired by the Pentagon to promote Chalabi’s CIA-created Iraqi National Congress. That's another story that we didn’t see in most of our corporate media, though, given that all those people are connected tightly to the White House and the Pentagon, it suggests strongly that top White House officials were behind the whole Niger document scam.

If so, it would make Lyndon Johnson's Tonkin Gulf deception seem like child's play (and all by itself would be grounds for impeachment).

I should note that Italy provides a good model of where the U.S. is heading. Here virtually the entire media--and certainly the entire electronic media--is literally owned by the right-wing prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi. Except for some fortunately excellent independent newspapers, like La Repubblica, which did most of the investigative work into the Niger document forgery story, it’s hard to get any information in Italy about what its government is doing. The one advantage Italy has is a genuine political opposition.

At least Italy’s media have an excuse: they’re literally owned by the prime minister. Our media, supposedly independent, only act like Bush owns them.

Francis Boyle offers expert's analysis of Iraq war as "Pure Evil"

by Mohamed Elmasry

January 10 2006

President George W. Bush continues to staunchly defend his war against Iraq, in which more than 2,000 Americans and more than 30,000 Iraqis have been killed -- with fatality numbers on both sides still going nowhere but up.

Iraq has become nothing less than a very expensive made-in-America killing field, in which every death -- whether Iraqi, American, or Coalition -- has cost U.S. taxpayers more than 2 million dollars. That's 2 million, per person, totaling 200 billion dollars so far.

Moreover, during 34 months of occupation, the U.S. has not built even one more university, school, hospital, bridge, factory, or road. Nor have any massive scholarship programs been established at American universities to help educate deserving Iraqi students in engineering, medicine, business, and other vital infrastructural professions. In the meantime, there is no public accounting to explain where billions of Iraqi oil dollars have been spent, and on whom.

Wars, death, destruction, human misery and loss of personal security are all misfortunes that people of good faith try to avoid or lesson among their fellow humans -- but when these misfortunes become pure evil, it is more often than not in the context of planned aggression, such as the American campaign against Iraq.

For an excellent account of how this aggression came into being, the people who made it possible, and why, I strongly recommend you read Francis A. Boyle's book "Destroying World Order: U.S. Imperialism in the Middle East Before and After September 11." [1] This expertly-written book even includes a guide to impeaching George W. Bush! In fact, Boyle's book and his testimony against GWB are extraordinary; this is because Boyle comes with credentials unmatched by any of his critics.

He is not only a leading American expert in international law and a human rights activist (a former board member of Amnesty International, 1988-1992); he is also a distinguished professor with volumes of publications to his credit, who teaches international law at the University of Illinois. Boyle holds a Doctor of Laws, as well as a Ph.D. in Political Science, both from Harvard. He is definitely not to be dismissed lightly.

"It is now a matter of public record that immediately after being inaugurated as president in January 2001, George Bush, Jr., Vice-President Dick Cheney, Secretary of War Donald Rumsfeld, and his pro-Israeli 'Neoconservative' Deputy Paul Wolfowitz began to plot, plan, scheme, and conspire to wage a war of aggression against Iraq," Boyle writes. "Later, they manipulated the tragic events of September 11 in order to provide a pretext for doing so. The fact that Iraq had nothing at all to do with September 11 or supporting Al-Qaeda - as the CIA itself advised - made no difference to Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, their Undersecretary of War Douglas Feith, Undersecretary of State John Bolton, and the numerous other pro-Israeli Neo-Cons inhabiting the Bush, Jr. administration."

Not surprisingly, the mainstream American media did not give Boyle's book anything near the coverage it deserves. But one day, his expert witness testimony, along with others, could be used in a court of law, or by historians, to identify who is/was behind this pure evil. It may take years, but that day will surely come.

Boyle recalls his student days at the University of Chicago (he earned his A.B. there in 1971) and how Professor Leo Strauss, who taught political philosophy, trained an entire generation of students "to become ruthless and unprincipled Machiavellians."

"Years later, the University of Chicago became the 'brains' behind the Bush Jr. Empire and his Ashcroft police state," Boyle writes. "Attorney General John Ashcroft received his law degree from the U of C in 1967. Many of his lawyers at the Bush Jr. Department of Justice are members of the right-wing, racist, bigoted, reactionary, and totalitarian Federalist Society (aka 'Feddies'), which originated in part at the U of C. Feddies wrote the USA Patriot Act (USAPA) and the draft for USAPA II, which constitute the blueprint for establishing an American police state."

Boyle continues that, according to Bush, he hired 20 Straussians to occupy key positions in his administration and they "intentionally took offices where they could push American foreign policy in favor of Israel and against its chosen enemies such as Iraq, Iran, Syria and the Palestinians. Most of the Straussian Neo-Cons in the Bush Jr. administration and elsewhere are Israel-firsters: what is 'good' for Israel is by definition 'good' for the United States - making it questionable sometimes whether even the notion of 'dual loyalties' accurately expresses the extent of diluted loyalty to true American interests and values."

Boyle's book was published in 2004, and although still timely, it merits a new updated edition in which this most credible author can give more of his expert witness testimony on recent findings that Bush ordered spying on American citizens -- but "only 500 of them," according to the President of the supposed "Free World."

Subject: Author James Moore ("Bush's Brain" Author) on "No Watch Fly List" for past year
Date: 7 Jan 2006

From: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/1/5/85158/32663

From his bio at Huffington Post.

James Moore is an Emmy-winning former television news correspondent and the co-author of the bestselling, Bush's Brain: How Karl Rove Made George W. Bush Presidential. He has been writing and reporting from Texas for the past 25 years on the rise of Rove and Bush and has traveled extensively on every presidential campaign since 1976.

This author was placed on the no fly list. Two points: there's nothing you or I can do to help him but make this public, and two - we are all targets here. Excerpt, Link and horror story on the flip.

Maccabee's diary:

I made it a point to arrive very early at the airport. My reservation was confirmed before I left home. I went to the electronic kiosk and punched in my confirmation number to print out my boarding pass and luggage tags. Another error message appeared, "Please see agent."

I did. She took my Texas driver's license and punched in the relevant information to her computer system.

"I'm sorry, sir," she said. "There seems to be a problem. You've been placed on the No Fly Watch List."

"Excuse me?"

"I'm afraid there isn't much more that I can tell you," she explained. "It's just the list that's maintained by TSA to check for people who might have terrorist connections."

"You're serious?"

"I'm afraid so, sir. Here's an 800 number in Washington. You need to call them before I can clear you for the flight."

Exasperated, I dialed the number from my cell, determined to clear up what I was sure was a clerical error. The woman who answered offered me no more information than the ticket agent.

"Ma'am, I'd like to know how I got on the No Fly Watch List."

"I'm not really authorized to tell you that, sir," she explained after taking down my social security and Texas driver's license numbers.

"What can you tell me?"

"All I can tell you is that there is something in your background that in some way is similar to someone they are looking for."

"Well, let me get this straight then," I said. "Our government is looking for a guy who may have a mundane Anglo name, who pays tens of thousands of dollars every year in taxes, has never been arrested or even late on a credit card payment, is more uninteresting than a Tupperware party, and cries after the first two notes of the national anthem? We need to find this guy. He sounds dangerous to me."

"I'm sorry, sir, I've already told you everything I can."

"Oh, wait," I said. "One last thing: this guy they are looking for? Did he write books critical of the Bush administration, too?"

I have been on the No Fly Watch List for a year. I will never be told the official reason. No one ever is. You cannot sue to get the information. Nothing I have done has moved me any closer to getting off the list. There were 35,000 Americans in that database last year. According to a European government that screens hundreds of thousands of American travelers every year, the list they have been given to work from has since grown to 80,000.

This man's life is -forever?- changed, and his ability to do his job, see his family, take a vacation, etc. has been compromised by the Bush administration...and they don't have to tell him why.

Government secrecy and illegal activities aren't restricted to people with funny names and swarthy skin, folks. Yeah, they need to go after the bad people. Trouble is, we're not allowed to know what the definition of "bad" is. Neither is congress, or the judiciary...it seems to be a secret between Bush and God.

Kahil said he and his wife lost $5,000 in an all-inclusive trip to Ixtapa. His wife and two young sons were sent home after hitting the tarmac in Ixtapa, while Kahil was held overnight in a Mexican detention centre. The 38-year-old Mississauga man says he was forced to sleep on a concrete floor with only a blanket and pillow — although he was allowed to keep the family's three suitcases and his cellphone — before being escorted home on a private jet by two RCMP officers. "I want to know why I'm on a watch list with the Americans," Kahil told the Star yesterday. "If you have anything against me just let me know ... I want to clear my name. "One day, you're a normal person, the next day your life is upside down," he said. An exhausted Kahil, who owns a shoe store in Toronto, arrived back at Pearson airport at about 2:30 a.m. yesterday. Kahil said his ordeal began Thursday when he left Pearson with his wife, Rima Masri, and two sons. U.S. fighter jets shadowed Kahil's flight after American officials declared the plane was not cleared to travel over the U.S. with Kahil on board. While his wife and sons were sent home on the next flight to Toronto, Kahil was told he could not board the flight because U.S. authorities would not let him fly over U.S. air space. CLIP

Telling it like it isn't / By Robert Fisk (the semantic iceberg that has crashed into American journalism in the Middle East)

Telling it like it isn't

By Robert Fisk

ROBERT FISK is Middle East correspondent for the London Independent and the author, most recently, of "The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East," published last month by Knopf.

December 27, 2005

I FIRST REALIZED the enormous pressures on American journalists in the Middle East when I went some years ago to say goodbye to a colleague from the Boston Globe. I expressed my sorrow that he was leaving a region where he had obviously enjoyed reporting. I could save my sorrows for someone else, he said. One of the joys of leaving was that he would no longer have to alter the truth to suit his paper's more vociferous readers.

"I used to call the Israeli Likud Party 'right wing,' " he said. "But recently, my editors have been telling me not to use the phrase. A lot of our readers objected." And so now, I asked? "We just don't call it 'right wing' anymore."

Ouch. I knew at once that these "readers" were viewed at his newspaper as Israel's friends, but I also knew that the Likud under Benjamin Netanyahu was as right wing as it had ever been.

This is only the tip of the semantic iceberg that has crashed into American journalism in the Middle East. Illegal Jewish settlements for Jews and Jews only on Arab land are clearly "colonies," and we used to call them that. I cannot trace the moment when we started using the word "settlements." But I can remember the moment around two years ago when the word "settlements" was replaced by "Jewish neighborhoods" — or even, in some cases, "outposts."

Similarly, "occupied" Palestinian land was softened in many American media reports into "disputed" Palestinian land — just after then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, in 2001, instructed U.S. embassies in the Middle East to refer to the West Bank as "disputed" rather than "occupied" territory.

Then there is the "wall," the massive concrete obstruction whose purpose, according to the Israeli authorities, is to prevent Palestinian suicide bombers from killing innocent Israelis. In this, it seems to have had some success. But it does not follow the line of Israel's 1967 border and cuts deeply into Arab land. And all too often these days, journalists call it a "fence" rather than a "wall." Or a "security barrier," which is what Israel prefers them to say. For some of its length, we are told, it is not a wall at all — so we cannot call it a "wall," even though the vast snake of concrete and steel that runs east of Jerusalem is higher than the old Berlin Wall.

The semantic effect of this journalistic obfuscation is clear. If Palestinian land is not occupied but merely part of a legal dispute that might be resolved in law courts or discussions over tea, then a Palestinian child who throws a stone at an Israeli soldier in this territory is clearly acting insanely.

If a Jewish colony built illegally on Arab land is simply a nice friendly "neighborhood," then any Palestinian who attacks it must be carrying out a mindless terrorist act.

And surely there is no reason to protest a "fence" or a "security barrier" — words that conjure up the fence around a garden or the gate arm at the entrance to a private housing complex.

For Palestinians to object violently to any of these phenomena thus marks them as a generically vicious people. By our use of language, we condemn them.

We follow these unwritten rules elsewhere in the region. American journalists frequently used the words of U.S. officials in the early days of the Iraqi insurgency — referring to those who attacked American troops as "rebels" or "terrorists" or "remnants" of the former regime. The language of the second U.S. pro-consul in Iraq, L. Paul Bremer III, was taken up obediently — and grotesquely — by American journalists.

American television, meanwhile, continues to present war as a bloodless sandpit in which the horrors of conflict — the mutilated bodies of the victims of aerial bombing, torn apart in the desert by wild dogs — are kept off the screen. Editors in New York and London make sure that viewers' "sensitivities" don't suffer, that we don't indulge in the "pornography" of death (which is exactly what war is) or "dishonor" the dead whom we have just killed.

Our prudish video coverage makes war easier to support, and journalists long ago became complicit with governments in making conflict and death more acceptable to viewers. Television journalism has thus become a lethal adjunct to war.

Back in the old days, we used to believe — did we not? — that journalists should "tell it how it is." Read the great journalism of World War II and you'll see what I mean. The Ed Murrows and Richard Dimblebys, the Howard K. Smiths and Alan Moorheads didn't mince their words or change their descriptions or run mealy-mouthed from the truth because listeners or readers didn't want to know or preferred a different version.

So let's call a colony a colony, let's call occupation what it is, let's call a wall a wall. And maybe express the reality of war by showing that it represents not, primarily, victory or defeat, but the total failure of the human spirit.

Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney Remarks Georgia Black Chamber of Commerce

January 7, 2005

Good Morning!

I have been given a most unenviable task.

I am to pay homage to the legacy of Del Delaper, thank all of you for allowing me to represent you in Washington, DC, and give you a Washington Report—all in five minutes.

Now, for those of us who knew Del, we can only speak of his interminable commitment to the financial freedom of black people. That, indeed, was the unfinished dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For we must remember that it was at the dawning of the Poor People’s Campaign, the submission to America of the “bounced check to the Negro,” and the launching of the demand to Congress for an economic bill of rights that Dr. King was cut down by snipers’ bullets at a Memphis, Tennessee motel. But Del didn’t let the dream die with Dr. King. His labor of love was to cradle and nurture the black entrepreneurial spirit--for we all know that the long road to freedom lies at the end of self- sufficiency. And so, for Del and for Lou, the Georgia Black Chamber was a labor of love. And so it must be for all of us. Thank you for being here this morning.

But now, in my remaining minutes, what can I say but that in 1968, Dr. King was demanding 12 billion dollars for jobs for those able to work, incomes for those unable to work, and an end to discrimination. Finally, a decade later, President Carter signed into law, the Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act.

How far from the ideals of Dr. King and this legislation has this Administration taken our country.

When I return to Washington and take up the budget, the Republican majority will be forced to raise the debt limit beyond its current 8.2 trillion dollars.

They will try to hide that vote from you because it exposes the dismal fiscal stewardship of the party that is supposed to represent fiscal restraint. But today, our economy teeters on the brink due to the profligate spending of the White House and the Congress.

Record deficit. Record national debt. Record trade deficit.

Yet just a quick read of a few of the December headlines reveals:

December 2, 2005: Halliburton got bonuses for overbilling taxpayers by $169 million

December 2, 2005: Halliburton workers get paid 50 cents an hour in Iraq

December 6, 2005: Navy awards another $6.5 million to Halliburton for Katrina work

December 15, 2005: Another Halliburton employee involved in bribery— that is, other than Dick Cheney who is under investigation in France for bribing Nigerian officials

December 27, 2005: Halliburton stalls Pentagon proposal banning forced labor, human trafficking—yes, Halliburton and DynCorp reportedly still trade in young girls and women

December 29, 2005: Navy awards Halliburton another $20 million for Hurricane Wilma cleanup.

Now that takes care of our Vice President who still receives a check from Halliburton in what they call deferred compensation; but we can’t finish our report on the State of Washington, DC without also acknowledging the fattening portfolios of Donald Rumsfeld and our President (through his father, of course).

Suffice it to say that $4 billion dollars this year was set aside for bird flu and giving liability protections for flu drug manufacturers. No one is asking why bird flu? But never mind that pesky little detail. Donald Rumsfeld will be happy since he owns shares in the company that holds the patent for Tamiflu, reputed to be the only drug that treats bird flu. So what if we stockpile for bird flu and it ends up being swine? You’ve only lost your ability to sue and the $4 billion dollars down payment on flu preparedness that this Administration has sold you. But you really don’t have to worry if they stockpile the wrong vaccine for the wrong flu, the Congressional Budget Office says the likelihood of a flu pandemic is less than one-third of one percent, anyway.

Finally, I can’t leave this discussion without mentioning the Bush family portfolio and the fact that Carlyle is currently investing in bioweapons labs, satellite communications, and the military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us against. The more we fight, the more they make! Just dial Carlyle when the next disaster strikes.

Oops. That remark will certainly warrant a few wiretaps. But don’t worry. It’s all to protect you. From me.

At the same time, first Iraq under Hussein—well, he’s been taken care of now—but both Iran and China signal a switch in their reserves away from the dollar. I hope their prescription for that isn’t war against Iran or China next.

So instead of protecting the American people at a time of great economic uncertainty, Hurricane Katrina unveiled for us the utter lack of will on the part of this Administration to focus on the true needs of the American people.

And sadly, this month I will be forced to vote on an extension of the Patriot Act and a budget that takes $40 billion away from the sick, the poor, the elderly, single parents needing child support, college students and their families. No segment of the American population is left outside the crosshairs of this budgetary weapon of mass destruction called the Bush Administration and the Republican Congress. Except, of course, for the wealthy who roll away with an additional $70 billion in tax cuts and the no bid, sweetheart deal government contracts to which they’ve become accustomed.

The only word left in my vocabulary to describe what is happening to our country is “sinful.” And what I’ve described for you in these few short minutes is only the tip of the iceberg of a sea change in the culture of public policy making in Washington, DC. There was a time when the United States government was known as caring and nurturing of people both at home and abroad.

But now, I have to agree with Kanye West. Not only does George Bush not like Black people, his policies hurt all of us. And as a Democrat in a majority Republican House, Senate, White House, and Supreme Court, you can count on me to do what I can to keep up the good fight for you in Washington, DC.

Thank you for inviting me to share with you this morning; congratulations on surviving 2005; Best Wishes for 2006!

Subject: Happier News Year for 2006

Dear Friends,

I thought I would start our New Year with some reviews of 2005.

Nothing here is "breaking news", but should remind you of the twelve months we have just lived through. (...) First a handful of gifts in the form of links to e-newsletters and
websites that I have most appreciated this past year. These are news sources that re-post or digest material from newspapers, journals, blogs and alternative news sites and serve to counterbalance the normative and selective news we are getting from the dominant media.

You can view these alternative media sources online or sign up for direct delivery into your mailbox, the periodicity depending on the source. Check out the websites first for style and content.

Tell me what I've left out of these lists because one of my projects this year is to collate all back issues of my bulletins, and their weblinks, onto a website. I've deliberately not mentioned here subscription journals, organisation sites, blogs and individual sources (with thanks to many of you) to keep this list short, but I would still like to hear which news sources you value most. I'm bothered by the monopolization of news by the USA and its activities, as if news did not happen elsewhere.

The very best for 2006

Nadia

HARPER'S YEARLY REVIEW
December 31, 2005

A study found that the worldwide percentage of land stricken by drought has doubled within the last 30 years. The Jordan River was filled with sewage, and the last of Gaza's Jewish settlers left their homes on armored buses. Terrorists in London set off bombs on four trains and a bus, killing 52 people; President Bush condemned attacks on innocent folks by those with evil in their hearts. A 13-year-old boy in Kalamazoo accidentally burned down the family meth lab. New Orleans flooded after levees broke in the wake of Hurricane Katrina; many evacuees were not allowed to take their pets with them. "Snowball!" cried a little boy after police took away his dog. "Snowball!" At least 42,000 people died in an earthquake in Pakistan. It was announced that Cookie Monster would cut back on cookies. Authorities in Malaysia arrested 58 people who worship a giant teapot. Poor people rioted in France.

In North Carolina Kenneth Boyd became the 1,000th prisoner executed since the United States reintroduced the death penalty in 1976. A 1,600-inmate faith-based prison opened in Crawfordville, Florida. Police began random bag checks of subway passengers in New York City. It was revealed that the CIA had set up a secret system of prisons, called "black sites" around the world; it was also revealed that the National Security Agency was spying on Americans without first obtaining warrants. Journalist Judith Miller was released from jail and said she wanted to hug her dog. U.S. Congressman Tom DeLay was arrested; U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney's Chief of Staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was indicted. The Pentagon admitted to using white phosphorus during the 2004 attack on Fallujah, Iraq, and allocated $127 billion to build a robot army. The total number of American soldiers killed in the Iraq war rose to 2,174, while the total number of Iraqi civilians killed rose to 27,636. "We are all waiting for death," said an Iraqi soldier, "like the moon waiting for sunset." The U.S. Defense Department, in violation of the federal Privacy Act, was building a database of 30 million 16- to 25-year-olds. The Department of Homeland Security announced that it had wasted a great deal of money and needed much more. Starbucks came to Guantanamo Bay. Scientists began work on a complete, molecule-level computer simulation of the human brain. The project will take at least ten years.

Swami's Holiday Message: The One Suggestion: "LET THE GOLDEN RULE OVERRULE THE RULE OF GOLD" By Swami Beyondananda

There will indeed be peace on Earth. Whether we humans are around to enjoy it, that is up to us. It all depends whether we achieve critical mass before we reach critical massacre. -- Swami Beyondananda

I hate to break it to Moses and the fellas on the Christian Right, but the Ten Commandments just haven't worked very well. People have been commanded for millennia, but all this commanding hasn't seemed to put a Higher Power in command. Take the current commander-in-chief -- please. He's commandeered the Ten Commandments and claims to be second-in- command to the Supreme Commander. And yet with all that going for him, he still wants his posse to be exempt from those three pesky commandments on killing, stealing and false witness.

Only a Super Duper Power Can Overgrow the Current System

At a time when a self-elected Administration has declared itself the world's one super power, it seems they have "misunderestimated" one thing: The power of the people of the world multiplied by the power of love is bigger than any super power. It's a Super Duper Power that could bring down the "Irony Curtain," overgrow the current dysfunction at the junction, and create a world that would make Moses kvell and Jesus smile and Buddha wink -- and get six high-fives from Shiva.

That means that if we really do want for a new age to arrive before old age does, we need to take command, but not with more commandments. So I have a suggestion. With people being so suggestable nowadays, let's try the power of positive suggestion instead. And instead of ten whole commandments, let's go for one simple suggestion: "Let the Golden Rule overgrow the rule of gold."

Time to Teach Some Old Dogmas New Tricks

Now I know what you may be thinking: Look at this foolish Swami, thinking he can change the world. Well, let me reassure you, it is not necessary to change the world. There is a better way. If we toilet train the world, we will never have to change it again. Let this be the year we put an end to the barbaric practice of dogma- fighting, and pay attention to what every good dogma has in its heart: Some version of the Golden Rule. As the wise man Alan Watts said, "Let's stop worshipping the finger, and notice where the finger is pointing."

And let's stop giving the finger to other fingers, and see that all fingers are pointing -- back at us! We have met the Savior and he is US. The best alternative to the current declared state of emergency is to declare a state of emerge n' see. Emerge from the fear, and see we're in this love together. Since we're all One with the same One, we might as well go for the highest common denominator instead of the lowest common dominator. Maybe with enough of us emerging and seeing, the Golden Rule will finally overrule the rule of gold.

There's no escaping it, folks. We are all part of the inescapable Oneness. The Universe has us surrounded. Might as well surrender to the One Love. When we get that the human race is One, the whole race will win. And we'll finally live up to our name -- humankind. Yes, the day humankind learns to treat fellow humans kindly is the day all heaven will break loose.

May we bring this wish to life in 2006: Peace on earth, and goodwill to ALL!

Swami Beyondananda

May the FARCE be with you,

Steve Bhaerman

Subject: Tell the Bush administration to keep our national forests wild

Dear NRDC BioGems Defender,

The Bush administration is ruthlessly pursuing a scheme to sacrifice the last wild stretches of our national forests to logging and harmful development. We urgently need your help once again to protest this attack and protect our legacy of irreplaceable wildlands.

Go to http://www.savebiogems.org/tongass/takeaction.asp right away and join with other Americans in opposing the Bush administration's repeal of the historic Roadless Rule that banned destructive logging and roadbuilding in pristine national forestlands.

Supported by millions of Americans, the Roadless Rule safeguarded unspoiled areas of America's national forests -- including vast expanses of Alaska's Tongass rainforest, California's Sierra Nevada and Los Padres regions, backcountry habitat in the Rockies and stretches of the Appalachian, Pacific Crest and Continental Divide national scenic trails.

Early last year, though, the Bush administration quietly abolished this crucial safeguard, saying that governors can petition the Forest Service if they wish to keep roadless areas intact, but not assuring that any protections will be granted. Clearly, the administration is aiming to attack our national forest heritage one state at a time.

We can't afford to lose a single wild forest! We have already sacrificed more than half of our national forests -- over 90 million acres nationwide -- to invasive logging and roadbuilding. The Roadless Rule is one of the most important tools we have for preventing chainsaws and bulldozers from destroying the critical habitat of endangered wildlife -- and for preserving these unique wildlands for the enjoyment of millions of Americans.

NRDC is prepared to fight this raid on our natural heritage in the courts, in the media, in the halls of Congress and in corporate offices across the country. At every step, though, we will need proof in hand of how much these lands mean to the American public.

Please go to http://www.savebiogems.org/tongass/takeaction.asp and speak out against the Bush administration's repeal of the Roadless Rule. We'll collect your signature, along with millions of others, to show the Bush administration that the overwhelming majority of Americans want to keep our national forests wild.

Thank you for taking action to save our last wild national forests.

Sincerely,

Frances G. Beinecke President Natural Resources Defense Council

WHO BENEFITS FROM GM CROPS?

MONSANTO AND ITS CORPORATE DRIVEN GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROP REVOLUTION

KEY FACTS

By Friends of the Earth International, January 2006

A. TEN YEARS OF GM CROPS

The first significant planting of genetically modified (GM) crops took place in 1996. Ten years on, GM crops have failed to deliver the promises made by the biotech corporations. Moreover, the introduction of GM crops has increased the biotech industry?s control over the seed supply, most notably by Monsanto, the world?s biggest seed company. The last decade also shows that Monsanto has an undesirable influence over agriculture and food policies in many countries.

B. WHO BENEFITS FROM GM CROPS?

1. Rapid penetration is the result of aggressive biotech industry strategies. The increase in GM crops in a limited number of countries has largely been the result of the aggressive strategies of the biotech industry, particularly Monsanto, rather than the consequence of the benefits derived from the use of this technology. The GM crops commercialized to date are orientated towards maximizing benefits for the agribusiness and seed industries that control GM traits and the chemical products associated with GM crops.

2. GM crops have failed to tackle hunger and poverty. Most GM crops commercialized so far are destined for animal feed, not for food, and none have been introduced to address hunger and poverty issues. GM crops in developing countries have been grown mainly as export cash crops, sometimes at the expense of local food production. In Argentina, the second biggest producer of GM crops in the world, only 2% of the soya stays in the country. Other developing countries, such as Indonesia and India, have experienced substantial problems with Monsanto's GM crops, often leaving farmers heavily indebted. Monsanto continues to introduce aggressive royalty initiatives in South America to increase its profits.

3. No benefits for consumers. GM crops are not cheaper, are not better in quality and do not present any benefits for consumers. This is now even recognized by some parts of the biotech industry. After 30 years of research and public money, only two modifications are grown commercially to any extent: herbicide tolerance and insect resistance.

4. No benefit for the environment. Monsanto's Roundup Ready soybeans, the most extensively grown GM crop today, has led to an increase in herbicide use. Independent reports from the US shows that since 1996, GM corn, soybean and cotton have led to an increase in pesticide use of 122 million pounds (55 million Kg). The intensive cultivation of soybeans in South America is also fostering deforestation, and has been associated with a decline in soil fertility and soil erosion.

5. No benefit for the animal feed industry. Despite the fact that virtually all GM crops are destined as animal feed, the feed industry itself is not getting any benefit directly related to the genetic modification. In November 2005 the European feed industry (FEFAC), a major importer of soya for animal feed, declared that it "has no direct advantage from the presence of residues of herbicide resistant genes in the products they buy. The industry is therefore not prepared to pay for the use of this technology."

C. FEW CROPS, FEW COUNTRIES, LIMITED USES FOR LIMITED MARKETS

1. Few GM crops, most for animal feed and highly processed products. Over 95% of the GM crops commercialized today are GM soy, maize and cotton. GM soy consists in over 60% of the total area, maize over 20% and cotton the rest. The technology is limited to those three crops and two GM traits: herbicide tolerant and insect resistance. Most production of GM soya and maize in the world is destined to animal feed or heavily processed food products.

2. Few countries. During the first seven years of cultivation, between 1996 and 2002, over 90% of the global surface of GM crops was concentrated in just three countries: the United States, Argentina and Canada. In 2004, more than 84% of GM crops were still concentrated in these same three countries, although the areas under cultivation in Brazil, China, and India has grown progressively over the past three years.

3. Corporate concentration. Three companies - Monsanto, Syngenta, and Bayer are responsible for virtually all of the commercially released GM crops in the world today. Monsanto is by large the top GM crop leader. The company is responsible for around 90% of all GM traits used around the world, and has now become the world's biggest seed company.

D. CURRENT SITUATION IN THE WORLD TODAY: MONSANTO CLAIMS AND PLANS

1. Monsanto at the forefront of the worldwide GM crop push. In order to maximize profits from its GM seed business, Monsanto is at the forefront of the push for regulatory clearance for GM products in numerous countries. The company aims to aggressively displace conventional seeds with its patented GM varieties, particularly soy, corn, canola and cotton. It is striving for a world in which the only agriculture is genetically modified, and predicts that "full adoption of GM crops globally would result in income gains of US$210 billion per year within the next decade, with the largest potential gains occurring in developing countries at a rate of 2.1 percent gross national product per year".

2. Monsanto has an undesirable influence over national and international governments. Monsanto has been in the driver's seat when the US, Brazil and other countries developed GM legislation, resulting in industry-friendly policies. In Paraguay, India and Brazil Monsanto products were grown in areas where they were forbidden, paving the way for eventual legal authorization. In Indonesia the company bribed government officials to obtain regulatory approval for its crops. Many governments have adopted the company's claims that GM products are good for the environment and will contribute to the alleviation of poverty and hunger.

3. North America

- Few crops and traits commercialized. Very limited range of GM crops grown. As of July 2005, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) had approved 66 distinct biotech 'events' for commercial use, but since the 1990s only four crops with two traits have been grown to any significant extent. The number of permits granted for field trials of GM crops in the US climbed steadily from 1987 to 2002, but has since leveled off.

- Monsanto and the biotech industry have designed the US regulatory system. The US regulatory system has been driven by biotech industry lawyers. As the former official responsible for agricultural biotechnology at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration affirmed: "in this area, the US government agencies have done exactly what big agribusiness has asked them to do and told them to do".

- Lack of results: failure to introduce new generation of GM crops. The biotech industry has failed to introduce new ?second generation? GM crops with consumer benefits, and a ?third generation? with pharmaceutical drugs and industrial compounds. After 30 years of research, only two modifications have made it to the marketplace on any scale: herbicide tolerance and insect resistance. The biotech industry continues to focus its development efforts on the same traits, crops and applications that it did in the 1990s, and animal feed is the exclusive or primary intended use of most next-generation GM crops.

- The assault on US farmers. Monsanto continues to harass and sue farmers for doing what they have been doing for centuries: saving seeds. Thousands of farmers have been investigated by Monsanto: some have settled, but others have landed in court, where they face a very unbalanced situation, as their legal resources are far less than those of the multi-billion dollar company.

GM: New Study Shows Unborn Babies Could Be Harmed

Women who eat GM foods while pregnant risk endangering their unborn babies, startling new research suggests. The study found that more than half of the offspring of rats fed on modified soya died in the first three weeks of life, six times as many as those born to mothers with normal diets.

2005 WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR FOR THE BIOTECH FOOD INDUSTRY
Rachel's Democracy & Health News #837, Jan. 5, 2006, By Peter Montague
http://www.rachel.org/bulletin/index.cfm?St=3
Felix Ballarin spent 15 years of his life developing a special organically-grown variety of red corn. It would bring a high price on the market because local chicken farmers said the red color lent a rosy hue to the meat and eggs from their corn-fed chickens. But when the corn emerged from the ground last year, yellow kernels were mixed with the red.Government officials later confirmed with DNA tests that Mr. Ballarin's crop had become contaminated with a genetically modified (GMO) strain of corn. Because Mr. Ballarin's crop was genetically contaminated, it no longer qualified as "organically grown," so it no longer brought a premium price. Mr. Ballarin's 15-year investment was destroyed overnight by what is now commonly known as "genetic contamination." This is a new phenomenon, less than 10 years old -- but destined to be a permanent part of the brave new world that is being cobbled together as we speak by a handful of corporations whose goal is global domination of food. Mr. Ballarin lives in Spain, but the story is the same all over the world: genetically modified crops are invading fields close by (and some that are not so close by), contaminating both the organic food industry and the "conventional" (non-GMO and non-organic) food industry. As a result of genetically contamination of non-GMO crops in Europe, theU.S., Mexico, Australia and South America, the biotech food industry had an upbeat year in 2005 and things are definitely looking good for the future. Subject: Hopeful Offering

Hi Jean,

I have been reading your fabulous postings for some months now - along with many others I subscribe to. The service you perform in collating this material and presenting it the way you do is very valuable - thank you. I have a couple of items for you, that I am including here. The first you may have seen, and the second are my own musings that were written over the Christmas period and offer a more hopeful message.

Much love,

James

I just downloaded and watched this - it is the visual with a gentle female voice over describing what she saw:
http://www.lonelantern.org/femacamp.html

Video of the Beach Grove, Indiana FEMA CAMP
Indianapolis / Marion County - Beach Grove, Indiana - Amtrak railcar repair facility (closed); controversial site of a major alleged detention / processing center. Although some sources state that this site is a "red herring", photographic and video evidence suggests otherwise. This large facility contains large 3-4 inch gas mains to large furnaces (crematoria??), helicopter landing pads, railheads for prisoners, Red/Blue/Green zones for classifying/processing incoming personnel, one-way turnstiles, barracks, towers, high fences with razor wire, etc. Personnel with government clearance who are friendly to the patriot movement took a guided tour of the facility to confirm this site. This site is located next to a closed refrigeration plant facility.

And for the details of other sites and legislation which points to how it could come into use:

Dear Friends,

For about two years now I have been focusing on the pieces of the news to see if I could make them fit into some kind of recognisable picture. Of the many different flavours of news - ranging from the mainstream corporate controlled media, to the free speech independents - I have focused mostly on the latter. Most of the news we are confronted with every day speaks about the affairs of men and power, of wars and conflict, of destruction and death. And its been these revelations and discoverys of the harsher realities of our world that I have been passing on to my brave friends. At times I have to confess to feelings of helplessness and inability to effect positive change, and you have probably experienced similar responses from time to time.

Late last year a few videos and books came my way that offered some well articulated, big picture ways of viewing the increasing madness we witness in the news. It seemed that the further back I stood from the details, and the larger slice of the pie I took, the more I could see emerging patterns. The most recent of these has been Riane Eisler's The Chalice and the Blade. When she challenged my received-from-society view of the way life in what we refer to as pre-history, I was given a sense of hope. Recent reviews of archeological studies show that our view of the aggressive caveman culture is far from the truth. Eisler paints a much brighter picture of vibrant, healthy societies functioning with a fullness we hardly dare imagine.

Our view of pre-history and possible future scenarios is informed by the education we receive as we progress through life - not just our childhood schooling, but the information which comes at us every day through TV, books, magazines, radio, and the web. Most of the information has a number of uninspected assumptions at its root, assumptions that once understood have the potential to liberate our thinking, expand our view of the world, and inspire us to create a brighter future. Riane Eisler describes most eloquently how false is the assumption that "human nature" is a fundamentally masculine one of "brutality, oppression and warfare", and that prior to the Barbarian invasions which began around 4300 B.C.E., there were cultures built on the feminine goals of "truth, beauty, and justice." The education system, like the monetary system is presently controlled by those who have a dominator view of the world. As John Stuart Mill pointed out in his Principles of Political Economy, the way economic resources are distributed is a function not of some inexorable economic laws, but of political - that is, human - choices.

It feels to me, and I know to many of you, that we are in a critical juncture in our history as a species. Despite decades of promises from the scientific community that we will create wonderful and clever technological solutions to todays problems, we seem to be getting further and further from such utopian ideals. Instead of providing more of the basic needs of our human population, we see increasing numbers who do not have even have proper access to the essentials of water and food. Destruction of cultures, species, and environment - the diverse elements which make for a healthy society of happy, creative, loving, caring, wise, forward thinking people - clearly has to change. As Riane Eisler put it so succintly, "one more shift from peace to war could be our last".

The "shift" she refers to are those points in history when a change in the balance between masculine (or dominator) and feminine (or partnership) values, has had a noticeable influence on society. Such as the years when Jesus walked the earth (if you assume his physical presence has some basis of fact). His admonitions to "love thy neighbour" and assume equality between the sexes don't seem unreasonable. Unfortunately his fine and noble gestures did not "save us," but they did form one of the "shifts", from Androcratic to Gylanic values.

It has been observed that "shifts" to a more Gylanic and feminine values based society are often followed by a backlash of increased efforts, from those favouring an Andocratic approach. Such efforts come in the form of promoting limited participation from women and feminine values, and an increase in aggresssive war activity. This may explain why the recent Bush condoned domestic spying activities have included, amongst others, members of the Baha'i Faith. It was the same Baha'i Faith, that encourages equality between women and men, which was the target of Ayatollah Khomeini's barbarism in 1983, when ten Baha'i women, including Iran's first woman physicist, a concert pianist, a nurse, and three teen-age college students were killed in a public execution.

To quote Eisler again: "Human evolution is at a crossroads. Stripped to its essentials, the central human task is how to organise society to promote the survival of our species and the development of our unique potentials." A good example of a more Gylanic approach being highly effective, is in the city offices where Jamie Learner was well-loved Mayor for many years. As a man expressing feminine values of caring, nurturing, a desire for equality and beauty, he naturally drew women into the decision making processes of running Curitiba. The result was a number of effective and creative solutions which had positive results on important issues affecting the environment, the poor, and the children.

My reading of the current state of world affairs leads me to believe we are in the last painful throws of a dying Andocratic society model, that is clinging ever more desparately to its hold on power. Years ago my friend Laurence Boomert prophesied that "one day those in power will open their clenched fist and discover that the power they thought they had, has slipped between their fingers like sand." I hope this analogy holds true.

Now a new and different action is being called for, to usher in a different way of relating to one another. I feel that intentional community, however it gets expressed, is an obvious next step for a multitude of reasons. Because we are social beings and our individual and collective personal growth happens naturally in relationships rather than in isolation. Because by cooperating we can help reduce consumption - we can share lawn mowers, and more. Because reducing dependency on external and finite resources such as oil and water, must also reduce the wars over them. Because its more fun that slogging it out alone. Because we desire a life of loving and intimacy, and have a basic urge to move beyond a life based on fear. Because we don't believe the dominator view of the world and its "human nature" message. Because we want to be kind to the earth and tread lightly. Because we want to leave it at least a little bit better than we found it.

The Gylanic model of society is so important because it embraces the skills, talents, wisdom, diversity and dynamic that is absent by the very fact that half the population of the world - the female half - is profoundly limited in the degree they influence society, and we surely will need all the help we can get in the coming decades, if we are to survive as a species with some semblance of dignity.

The evolutionary biologist, Erwin Lazlo points out that humans "have the ability to act consciously, and collectively," excercising foresight to "choose their own evolutionary path." And he adds that in our "crucial epoch" we "cannot leave the selection of the next step in the evolution of human society and culture to chance. We must plan for it, consciously and purposefully."

Subject: Essay on compassion

Bonsoir Jean,

I wrote this essay last week about compassion and found it timely. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Day is coming up on January 16th. Of course, this essay is not so much about him as it is humanity in general.

Namaste,
Patty-Lynne Herlevi

http://www.geocities.com/pherlevi/crankycrowessays.html

An exert: I am not going to look up the meaning of compassion in the dictionary nor am I going to quote the Dalai Lhama. While those would be good places to start on a quest for compassion, I would rather express my own ideas about this powerful emotion. I prefer to break the word down into two components, "com" which reminds me of the Spanish word, "compadre" and suggests something that is shared among like-minded people or of a similar spirit. And "passion," the fire that burns in all of our hearts. It is unfortunate, that in the society I reside, passion is usually only expressed in regard to sex or violence. There are crimes of passion, we are reminded of Jeanne D'Arc who was burned on the stake as a way to squelch her virginal passion and people such as Martin Luther King Jr. or Gandhi were murdered for launching their dreams through their burning passion.

So what we end up with is a lot of people who are afraid to feel compassion or passion because of an ingrained fear of being burned by the flames of their desires. We end up with a lot of apathetic people who have deep sixed their dreams or have been overly medicated by doctors who fear any deep human emotion. But let me ask you, is it truly madness to outwardly express one's dreams and to put steam behind visions? Or is it complete and total madness to deny and repress a wide range of human emotions that if planted in the ground correctly could lead to a more balanced way of being? Personally, I think it's time we liberate ourselves from the chains of cultural repression. I think it's time we let loose our dreams onto the world. It's time we go on quests to seek the meaning of compassion and then live our lives dictated by love, understanding and compassion. I think it's time we stop sending mystics to the proverbial closet and take prophesies seriously. I think it's time we stop looking to science to prove that there is a God, when deep down we know that each of us is a face of God. And the irony does not escape me that God created science. I hope some day science stops playing at God and instead focuses on curing diseases, creating sustainable technology and protecting our fragile eco-system. Enough with cloning and GMOs. Stop insulting God and instead let's roll up our sleeves and clean up the mess we have made on this planet....

PRESENT-DAY RENAISSANCE

This is a Renaissance
and more than a Renaissance
but with such shadows that the sun may not break through.

By what right do they send plutonium into space?
By whose authority do they irradiate a nation?
Who told them they could dump their pesticides into me?

We do know how to plan towns humanly
and grow vegetables in a way that conserves the soil
and plan ahead for the fuel that’s running low.

But we don’t have the right to do these things.
They have the right, they say, to destroy
but we don’t have the right to let the Renaissance through.

Will our Renaissance be able to win through?
There have been other shadows in the past.
Humanity has always made it through.

What shall we do
that our present-day Renaissance
will break through?
