The Perfect Storm Series #3: Powerful Winds of Change Sweeping The Earth

Hello everyone!

With the indictment of several key Bush operatives perhaps only days away, it is fair to guess that the White House illegal resident needs as much distraction as possible to push media speculations about their imminent downfall away from headlines news. Thus, possibly, the media frenzy surrounding an hypothetical Avian Flu threat and above all the very curious mega-boosting of tropical storm Wilma to a category five super-hurricane status within 24 hours, now apparently headed towards densely populated regions of Florida...

There are lots of important green holocaust news in this compilation along with a most interesting and encouraging message from Matthew — "Earth's restoration to her original paradise self will be accomplished". And LOTS more as usual!

Feel free to share widely as usual ;-)

"One thing is probably certain: if the climate does not stabilise, the hole in the ozone layer will never close," said Magas, who pointed out that the United States emits "the shocking equivalent of 25 tons of CO2 per capita every year, compared to 3.7 tons for Chile and a global average of three tons per capita." "The incredible thing is that after that, efforts were not undertaken to curb emissions of greenhouse gases, which are today, now that CFC emissions have been curtailed, the main cause of the destruction of ozone worldwide," said Magas. "Although it sounds terrible, the hurricanes are welcome, if that's what it takes to change the mentality of the big, irresponsible polluters," he added.

"As fast as the dark try to regain the initiative so their plans fall apart. They know that theirs is a lost cause, but stubbornly refuse to accept what is in front of their eyes. They imagine that they can make one last attempt to control you, and contemplate actions that would cause chaos. Dear Ones, do not allow them to fill you with fear or apprehension, stand aside and be aware but do not allow them to pull you down into their schemes. Be positive in your response, and remember that any negativity on your part will only aid them. Pour the calming waters of Love upon all that you see that is not of the Light. It is your only weapon, but the most powerful one in the Universe."

Pakistan Quake: 500,000 in Danger of Dying from Hypothermia
More than 500,000 people in northern Pakistan, the world's most mountainous region, haven't been reached and are in danger of dying from hypothermia after the October 8 earthquake, the United Nations said. Reaching the survivors of the earthquake, which may have killed more than 79,000 people in Pakistan and India, is one of the "toughest challenges" relief workers have ever faced, the United Nations World Food Program Executive Director James Morris said. "At the best of times this is very difficult terrain, but with landslides blocking roads, plus the onset of winter, getting to these people is taking far longer," Morris said yesterday in Dubai. "And there is very little time left." As many as 3.3 million people are homeless after the 7.6 magnitude earthquake, which left more than 67,000 injured. The scale of the disaster in the divided region of Kashmir has prompted Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to offer to open the border with India to allow relatives to reach each other. (...) Temperatures are falling to below freezing and hypothermia is a risk for people sheltering under plastic sheeting in Kashmir, the UN said. Injured people are still coming down from higher places and many have gangrene. Aftershocks continue to rattle the region, disrupting aid efforts. A magnitude 5.8 aftershock struck this morning in the vicinity of the main quake, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site. The tremor was felt in Islamabad and sent people into the streets in panic. (...) Pakistan urgently needs 260,000 tents and 2 million blankets for the survivors, Ahmed, said yesterday. Only 20,000 tents designed for winter conditions have been delivered out of 300,000 needed, the UN said on Oct. 17. (...)  Financial assistance totaling $610 million has been pledged by other countries and donors to Pakistan while local Pakistanis have donated 4 billion rupees ($67 million), Musharraf said. "The funds required for reconstruction and rehabilitation is beyond our reach," Musharraf said, appealing to countries to donate more. "I want to convert a challenge into opportunity. Reconstruction and rehabilitation is a difficult and long term task, which will take years." CLIP

Relief Officials Say Quake Toll May Hit 100,000
Relief officials and local government leaders in earthquake-devastated northern Pakistan have reported dramatically higher death tolls from the October 8 temblor, with figures as high as 100,000 from those best positioned to assess the outcome, the army's chief spokesman said today.

U.N.: Asia quake may be worse than tsunami (Oct 17)
UNITED NATIONS -- U.N. humanitarian officials say relief continues to pour in for the mounting number of victims from the South Asia earthquake and some officials said the destruction of structures may be worse than the Dec. 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami. The earthquake dead are estimated at near 30,000 with huge swathes of the Himalayas in northern Pakistan still unreachable. Some 176,000 were killed in the tsunami, but another 50,000 are still missing. The earthquake has destroyed more than 80 percent of structures and buildings in parts of northern Pakistan, officials in the nation's capital, Islamabad, said. Many cities and villages in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and North West Frontier Province, the most affected areas, have been wiped out. More than 4 million people are affected, of whom 1 million are in acute need of help. More than 2 million people need to be re-housed, relief agencies said. (...) Gezairy said as no roads were destroyed by the tsunami, destruction took place mainly within a few hundred meters along coastlines and it was far easier to assess the damage and plan relief. "The fact only helicopters can reach so many mountain areas and that the affected areas are so remote, makes it extremely difficult to even gauge the full-scale of the damage and determine what needs to be done first," Gezairy explained. According to WHO, the number of health workers needed to be doubled or even tripled in some places. CLIP

Kashmiris eager for border to open for quake aid (19 October 2005)
MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan - The line dividing Kashmir remained closed on Thursday despite dramatic offers by Pakistan and India to allow help for thousands of earthquake victims to flow across their war-scarred, disputed border. South Asia's old rivals needed time to carry out their plan, underlining the political sensitivity of such a move and the logistical difficulties in a mountainous area where the death toll from the Oct. 8 quake has risen to nearly 50,000. But they were quick to restore telephone links between the two Kashmirs, India opening lines blocked 16 years ago after the eruption of a rebellion New Delhi accuses Pakistan of backing. (...) For all their troubles, people in the destroyed city were cheered by President Pervez Musharraf's surprise proposal, swiftly accepted by New Delhi, that the border between the two Kashmirs be opened so that people could meet their relatives and help rebuild the region. "It will give at least some comfort to people who lost everything in the earthquake and it may help establish peace in the region," said Muzaffarabad businessman Mohammed Saleem. (...) India and Pakistan began a peace process in 2003, but progress has been slow, particularly over the core issue of Kashmir, which both countries claim. Since the earthquake, both governments have been criticised for letting their distrust hinder the flow of aid to isolated communities in valleys close to the ceasefire line, known as the Line of Control. (...) The official death toll in Pakistan's Kashmir and North West Frontier Province was raised to 48,000, but provincial officials talk of far higher numbers in both places. On the Indian side of the ceasefire line just over 1,300 people were killed. CLIP

Wilma Sets Barometric Pressure Record (Oct 19)
MIAMI - Hurricane Wilma doesn't stop making history: It is the strongest, most intense Atlantic hurricane in terms of barometric pressure and the most rapidly strengthening on record.

Record Hurricane Wilma threatens Caribbean, Florida (Oct. 19, 2005)
Exploding from a tropical storm into the most powerful Atlantic hurricane on record in less than 24 hours, Wilma has already proven deadly as it barrels toward land. At least a dozen people have died since Sunday as the storm lashed Caribbean coastlines. (...) "Even before she hits Florida, Wilma is going down in the record books as the fastest strengthening storm we've observed going back to the 1850's," said meteorologist Ben Nelson. However Wilma isn't expected to keep its record strength for long, as higher disruptive atmospheric winds in the Gulf of Mexico around the hurricane should weaken it before landfall, Hurricane Center meteorologist Hugh Cobb told The Associated Press. Jamaica, Cuba, Nicaragua and Honduras are being pounded with rain driven ashore by the storm, hammering residents still recovering from the flooding that left 1,500 people dead or missing across Central America and Mexico. Since Monday, landslides and flooding triggered by rain on Wilma's leading edge have killed at least 11 people and forced some 2,000 from their homes. CLIP

Hurricane Wilma blamed for 10 deaths in Haiti (Oct. 18, 2005)
Ten deaths in Haiti from mudslides have been blamed on hurricane Wilma, which has been upgraded to a category 2 storm. Forecasters expect Wilma to grow into a Category 4 storm on a scale of five, with winds of more than 210 kilometres per hour when it crosses from the Caribbean Sea into the Gulf of Mexico on Friday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center has the storm crossing southern Florida on Saturday -- although a hurricane's path is difficult to predict. (...) "There's no scenario now that takes it toward Louisiana or Mississippi, but that could change," Max Mayfield, director of the Hurricane Center told The Associated Press.Prompting fears the hurricane could move in on the Gulf Coast, which has already been battered this year by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Dennis, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin warned residents they must be prepared for yet another evacuation. On Monday, Wilma entered the history books as the season's 21st named storm, matching a 72-year-old record for the highest number of Atlantic storms in a single season. The last time this many storms formed since record-keeping began 154 years ago was in 1933.Having become the season's 12th hurricane, Wilma also ties a 1969 record for the most hurricanes in one term. The six-month hurricane season ends Nov. 30.

Wilma: strongest hurricane ever (October 19, 2005)
There has never been a hurricane like Wilma before. With an unbelievable round of intensification that saw the pressure drop 85 mb in just 12 hours, Wilma smashed the all-time record for lowest pressure in an Atlantic hurricane this morning. The 4 am hurricane hunter report put the pressure at 884 mb from a dropsonde, and the meteorologist reported an even lower 881 mb pressure extrapolated from 10,000 feet flight altitude. This easily bests the previous record of 888 mb set in Hurricane Gilbert of 1988. The eye of Wilma during this round of intense deepening oscillated between 2 and 4 nautical miles, and the area of hurricane force winds only covered an area up to 15 miles from the center. This is an incredibly compact, amazingly intense hurricane, the likes of which has never been seen. The Hurricane Season of 2005 keeps topping itself with new firsts, and now boasts three of the five most intense hurricanes of all time--Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. CLIP - AND THIS FROM ANOTHER OFFICIAL REPORT: (...) Wilma is a catastrophic category five hurricane that is moving over very warm waters...typical of the northwestern Caribbean Sea...and within an environment of light shear. However...despite the favorable large scale environment... Wilma is near its maximum potential intensity and further strengthening is not anticipated. Most likely...the small eye will collapse followed by slight weakening or some fluctuations in intensity. Eyewall replacement cycles will likely control the intensity for the next 2 to 3 days while the hurricane is over the northwestern Caribbean Sea.Thereafter...once Wilma reaches the southeastern Gulf of Mexico and encounters the westerlies and high shear...weakening should begin. The Iraqi Constitution: A Referendum for Disaster
The constitutional process culminating in Saturday's referendum is not a sign of Iraqi sovereignty and democracy taking hold, but rather a consolidation of U.S. influence and control according to Phillis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies. Continuing in His Defiance of the Law
Republicans and Democrats have finally found something they can agree on. Marjorie Cohn points out that they have bipartisan support to stop Bush's inhuman and degrading treatment of prisoners in United States custody: It's bad for our image in the Arab and Muslim world. It breeds more resentment against the US, making us more vulnerable to terrorism. And it's just plain un-American.

Abramoff investigation has GOP holding its breath (October 16, 2005)
CIA leak probe may be getting more attention, but troubles surrounding former lobbyist worry Republicans more. (...) Rove "has some serious problems," said Naomi Seligman, spokeswoman for the watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. "But while most of Washington is focused on Mr. Rove, we know that the linchpin to the ethical downfall of the White House and some members of Congress is the Abramoff investigation." Charlie Cook, publisher of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report newsletter, agreed that the Abramoff investigation is "the one that they (Republicans) are really worried about" because it has the potential of tarring the party. "This is a real one," Cook said. "It has the potential to take the scandal issue to the next level." Republicans are clearly nervous. CLIP

MSNBC's Keith Olberman's Video Timeline, and Transcript, of Political Bad News for Bush Followed by Terror Alerts
Last Thursday on Countdown, I referred to the latest terror threat - the reported bomb plot against the New York City subway system - in terms of its timing. President Bush’s speech about the war on terror had come earlier the same day, as had the breaking news of the possible indictment of Karl Rove in the CIA leak investigation. I suggested that in the last three years there had been about 13 similar coincidences - a political downturn for the administration, followed by a “terror event” - a change in alert status, an arrest, a warning. We figured we’d better put that list of coincidences on the public record. We did so this evening on the television program, with ten of these examples. The other three are listed at the end of the main list, out of chronological order. The contraction was made purely for the sake of television timing considerations, and permitted us to get the live reaction of the former Undersecretary of Homeland Security, Asa Hutchinson. We bring you these coincidences, reminding you, and ourselves here, that perhaps the simplest piece of wisdom in the world is called “the logical fallacy.” Just because Event “A” occurs, and then Event “B” occurs, that does not automatically mean that Event “A” caused Event “B.” But one set of comments from an informed observer seems particularly relevant as we examine these coincidences. On May 10th of this year, after his resignation, former Secretary of Homeland Security Ridge looked back on the terror alert level changes, issued on his watch. Mr. Ridge said: “More often than not we were the least inclined to raise it. Sometimes we disagreed with the intelligence assessment. Sometimes we thought even if the intelligence was good, you don’t necessarily put the country on (alert)… there were times when some people were really aggressive about raising it, and we said ‘for that?’” CLIP

Bad omens' for the White House (Oct 18)
This is a jittery week in Washington. On top of all President George W Bush's other political worries and woes is the looming prospect that two of his most trusted and powerful advisers might be forced to resign and face criminal charges. The Bush administration is said to be expecting the worst. Mr Bush's closest political aide, Karl Rove, and Vice-President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis Libby, are going to know their fate within the next few days as a special prosecutor finishes his work. The case goes back to the summer of 2003, when the identity of a serving CIA officer, Valerie Plame, was leaked to journalists. CLIP

April 17, 2007 - George W. Bush resigns in disgrace. Tell me why it can't happen? (Oct 12)
It could happen! The parallels to Watergate here are intriguing. Remember, it took years for Nixon's criminal insanity to play all the way out. We've got the unpopular foreign war, the Veep about to be dragged down by a major scandal that will likely lead to his resignation, the increasingly paranoid POTUS, and the likelihood of all of it leading to a Democratic House and Senate in 2007. Peak Oil Crisis: When Will Peak Oil Arrive? (October 13)
(...) Last week, however, the Association for the Study of Peak Oil (ASPO), the oldest and most prestigious of the unbiased organizations studying peak oil, released a new estimate of the year in which peak oil will arrive. The new date, which is based on a reevaluation of the potential for further deepwater oil production, is now 2010 vs. the previous estimate of 2007. It should be noted that a few years back the ASPO moved the date back from 2010 to 2007 based on turmoil in the Middle East. Until now, most independent observers have concluded that world oil production would peak within the next two or three years. We now have an authoritative estimate, which pushes the date to five years. (...) I’m sure the folks at ASPO have done their arithmetic properly and that, should all go well, more oil might be coming out of the ground in 2010 than in 2005. But, it’s the "should all go well" that bothers me; for if one starts making a list of the events that might bring the cheap oil age to an abrupt end, it is frightening. In a recent article on the web site, Ronald Cook lists some 18 assumptions that have to go right in the next five years in order for an increasing supply of oil to come out of the ground: Stability or prolonged civil war in Iraq? Terrorists do or don't cause prolonged disruptions by blowing up infrastructure or governments up? OPEC really has the reserves they claim so that one or more major suppliers don't go into sudden depletion? Schedules are kept so that many multi-billion dollar projects come into production when they are supposed to. (Five years without disruptive hurricanes)? The price of oil stays at a level where people can afford it? Recent history suggests that five years of tranquil growth for further oil production simply will not come to pass. As many have commented, our recent hurricanes alone will probably turn out to be enough to bring us to peak oil sooner rather than later.

Agriculture facing its own Katrina
Agriculture today is facing a major catastrophe not experienced since the Dust Bowl days of the Great Depression. Based on expert economic projections, for the first time in decades, many U.S. farmers cannot possibly "cash flow" a crop or crops for the year 2006. Bankers are saying "No." Many of us will not be able to farm this year or the next. The doubling and tripling of fuel and petrochemical prices are the last link in a chain of bad economic events. Since Aug. 29, the entire world has been focused on the aftermath of the terrible destruction of Hurricane Katrina. Then, to make a terrible tragedy even worse, Hurricane Rita slammed into Southeast Texas and Western Louisiana on Sept. 24. These two storms had an impact on the nation's fuel refining capacity, increasing prices beyond an already dismal situation. In agriculture, we cannot pass these prices along as other industries do. Ultimately, it means the numbers don't add up. If we can't show positive cash flow, we won't get our operating loans. For farmers, a Katrina-like disaster is building. It will soon swamp many family farming operations. Astronomical fuel prices, fertilizer and chemical costs have reached the point that even a modest profit is impossible.Farmers are receiving the lowest price for commodities that myself or most farmers can remember. Farmers are a proud group, usually not willing to protest. This time, I hope someone is listening. We are literally at the end of the turn row. That's a metaphor for desperation. Agriculture is in serious trouble. CLIP

Dizzying explosion of 'bird flu' events, coverage create confusion (October 19, 2005)
To many people trying to make sense of their newspapers or newscasts these days, it must seem like actresses Tippi Hedren (The Birds) and Sandra Bullock (Speed) conspired to write a script for a really bad horror movie. Lethal bird viruses lurking to infiltrate the lungs of innocent people, threatening to turn a seasonal respiratory ailment into a mutant killer flu. Migratory birds winging the virus from Asia to Russia towards the heart of Europe. Ashen-faced public health authorities warning of potential fatalities ranging from the merely awful to the barely conceivable. Pandemic influenza has a steep learning curve, ladies and gentlemen. It's time to strap on the crampons. Setting the record straight Experts are worried we may be watching a pandemic unfold, but there's no evidence yet that one has started. Sleuths Crack Tracking Code Discovered in Color Printers (October 19, 2005)

Take the Pinheads Polling (GRIST Summary)
Poll says most Americans back ultra-strength environmental protections - Nearly half of all U.S. adults think the government's doing too little to protect the environment. Almost three-quarters say that eco-protections are important, and that standards cannot be too high. No, you're not dreaming -- it's a fresh new Harris Interactive poll on attitudes of Americans toward environmental protection. The survey of a nationwide cross section of 1,217 adults indicated that 71 percent think large corporations are doing less than their share to help reduce environmental problems. Fifty-three percent say President Bush isn't stepping up to the plate, 57 percent think Congress needs a kick in the butt, and 44 percent say the media isn't doing enough. Water and air pollution rank as the highest-priority problems, followed closely by global warming, ozone depletion, loss of forestlands, and the need for more recycling. Despite these opinions -- which are, in the context of today's political scene, extremely green -- only 12 percent self-identify as environmentalists. Subject: Message from Matthew
Date: 17 Oct 2005

October 17, 2005

S: Matthew dear, hello!

MATTHEW: My greetings to you, dear soul! First I say, you have been away on a heartwarming family visit, otherwise we would have put out a message sooner to allay any fears about the avian, or bird, flu, and now I get to this topic straightaway. PLEASE DO NOT GO INTO FEAR ABOUT THIS!

This situation is like SARS, the much publicized virus last year, but with a new twist insofar as the talk of imposing martial law in the United States if patients there are diagnosed with the disease. Just as was SARS, this strain of flu came out of a laboratory by dark intent, and like SARS, this virus also has been neutralized by extraterrestrial technology. If you recall, worldwide media attention to SARS as a potential endemic flared suddenly, before the outbreak of the disease in humans and the extensive protective measures in Asian countries and the flurry to make vaccine available. Then all of that just as quickly fizzled when cases did not materialize in large numbers. So it is with bird flu with scary reports such as, "Scientists fear the virus can mutate to affect humans and kill millions worldwide."

Creating a world in panic is one aim of the Illuminati, who are behind this new flu virus's initiation. Due to the superior technology of ET forces, those with a dark agenda have failed in their major terrorist attempts since "9/11," so they are trying this biological fear tactic again. Yes, they do know that very likely for the same reason that SARS did not develop as they desired, neither will bird flu; however, by the additional threat of martial law with mandatory quarantines and inoculations, they are counting on sufficient fear-filled thought forms to allow the advertised disease symptoms to develop. Without light except the spark that is their souls‚ life force, the dark ones regard others as expendable, and their aim is to achieve a double victory: a frightened populace demanding vaccinations, which have harmful ingredients, and justification for a police state starting in the US and extending globally. You have the power to deal them a double defeat by NOT feeling any fear whatsoever!

S: Matthew, excuse me, please, but it's not generally known that fear of the flu and the proposed government measures could manifest sickness and martial law with its ramifications. Since only a comparative handful of people DO know this, isn't it possible that either or both of those situations might happen?

MATTHEW: Mother, we don't see that. We are aware that this new flu is the peak concern of many who have heard the media's dire warnings and who do not know that neither the disease nor martial law can come to fruition if they choose otherwise. Enough of you DO understand the universal law of manifestation and know that focusing on health in mind, body and spirit for all of Earth's peoples will create this instead of the goals of the dark minds. A comparative handful of people knew that thought forms about SARS not being a real threat would prevent its materializing as such, and that thought forms to diminish hurricane Rita's force would reduce that storm's velocity, yet both of those results came from the collective energy put out with those intentions. The same is true in this case of bird flu, and we are immensely heartened by the numbers of you who feel no fear at all about it.

I want to mention something else of vital importance that you are helping to manifest, by sending light to those who wish to cause massive death toll and devastation on their way to world domination. Those dark ones, who consider themselves above all others, have forgotten that All is Oneness within Creator Source, and it is with good reason that they are ever more fearful of losing their remaining control—daily they are seeing "defectors." The light you are generating added to that being beamed from off-planet and within Earth is motivating the "defectors" to join the light forces. All messengers from high stations tell you that the energy of love is the most powerful in the universe and urge you to send forth that energy to enLIGHTen the dark souls who are living in fear. Because fear causes rash decisions and reckless actions, it is for the best interests of every soul that you feel love for all of Earth.

S: Thank you, sweetheart. That only partially answers questions from people who want to know, in short, "Where are we in the light vs. the dark?" Can you please elaborate on this?

MATTHEW: Happily! But for anyone who is observing the new tone of mainstream media, this isn't really "news" as some milestones are being reported. I don't mean that suddenly newspaper or television or radio reports have become believable—witness their emphasis on the "bird flu endemic"—but with the public's growing awareness of what really is transpiring, for any credibility whatsoever, the media controllers must allow some truth along with what they hope you will believe of their continuing but thinning masquerade.

Also, I don't mean to imply that changing circumstances are primarily in the United States. It's that that country's government is on world center stage and consequently, important developments within the administration have global interest. US influence in other nations‚ affairs—basically self-serving and usually detrimental to the populace of those nations—means that whatever occurs in the US has a global domino effect; yet changes underway in that country are not isolated occurrences. The light intensity that is opening hearts and minds is global in scope, and perceptible changes for the better are happening around the world from grassroots movements to the heads of governments.

Now then, the lack of official response in hurricane Katrina's aftermath was an abrupt, albeit sad, eye-opener for many who formerly were resistant to hearing, much less feeling anything critical about their government. Internet reports and "word-of-mouth" informing have fueled the demand for truthful accounts, and even without any honest replies, polls are showing the drop in presidential approval ratings. That in itself is revealing because polls are designed not to provide actual opinions, but to convince you what to think; yet for credibility, just as with the news media, they have to reflect somewhat the real tenor of the public and that is, support for the Bush administration is consistently waning.

While greatly under-publicized nationally, the recent massive peace rally in Washington, DC, had powerful reverberations throughout that country and globally too, as people everywhere could see that surely change must be afoot in what is considered the most powerful country in your world. More voices within the country are being raised in protest of the administration's recent and past decisions, and leaders of other nations are speaking out firmly against current and long-time US foreign policies and actions. Formerly unknown legal proceedings are coming to light as well, and while the indictment process is slow and full disclosure is yet to come, both public and official murmurs about the resignation or impeachment of Bush and other administration principals are becoming louder. A powerful figure in government, Tom DeLay, has been indicted and some of his party colleagues are supporting this action. War veterans are speaking out strongly for peace and members of Congress proposed establishing a Department of Peace. States are rebelling against federal action that would supersede their electorate's legal choices and lawsuits over presidential election fraud are going through proper channels.

Acknowledging the winds of change goes well beyond the government. Increasing pressure is on the Catholic church to acknowledge and compensate the many victims of priests‚ sexual abuse during decades past. Corrupt corporate officials are being convicted. Economists and other reasoning minds are sounding strong alerts about such as the unsustainable costs of continuing the war and rebuilding Iraq and New Orleans; untenable US national debt; tax breaks for the wealthiest; ramifications of the rising price of oil and natural gas; growing numbers of personal and business bankruptcies; inaccessibility of health care; the dangers of advanced weaponry production.

Thus the growing demand for truth, justness and fairness is being reported at least to some extent. You could consider this as part of the mental, emotional and spiritual cleansing Earth needs, much like the cleansing of her planetary body through geophysical occurrences and climate adjustments. What is not yet apparent to the masses is where all of the changes are leading. You DO know! No, not with all the events or names or times, but with our assurance that the momentum of the light is unstoppable and within a few transitional years, Earth's restoration to her original paradise self will be accomplished.

S: Your encouragement always is a good lift—thank you! Channeled information on the Internet claims that a very destructive earthquake positively will happen in southern California next summer—the writer is frightened because she lives in that area. Could you please comment on this?

MATTHEW: Yes, of course, Mother. Unfortunately, a great deal of misinformation and disinformation abounds on the Internet and people aren't discerning between those and what is factual. Even well intended predictions, and much less stated certainties, of geophysical events are rife with foolhardiness. Not only are these kinds of events not cast in stone, but fretful preoccupation with them results only in fear, not the generation of light to prevent or reduce their impact such as occurred with Rita, for example. If your soul contract's longevity clause has expired and your chosen experiencing is completed, your physical lifetime will end regardless of where you are. If your contract calls for more years on Earth to fulfill your missions, you will be safe wherever you are. Being prepared spiritually is the key to facing life without fear!

S: Actually, several people wrote about earthquakes, global warming or environmental changes. I know you've often spoken about this, but can you please give us sort of an updated forecast—not a prediction, dear, just what's logical to expect.

MATTHEW: It's nice to see you smiling, Mother! But there's really very little to add to what I've said a number of times, that until Earth releases the millennia of accumulated negativity, there will be quakes, volcanic eruptions and storms, and when her geophysical cleansing has transmuted the kinetic build-up into the neutral energy pool, those occurrences will have done their job and will cease. As for climate changes, these too are necessary for Earth to fully regain robust health. Just as it is not healthful for her to have her seas, air and soil polluted or her forests hewn and her internal elements removed, it isn't healthful to have large barren, arid areas or polar ice or scorching temperatures; therefore, much of what is worrisome to many is simply Earth's pathway toward flourishing temperate zones planetary-wide. You will be amazed at how quickly this will happen once you're in the higher vibratory planes!

S: And we're still on target to be there by 2012, right?

MATTHEW: Well, yes, but Mother, it's as I've told you before, please don't put so much emphasis on that year. You can only perceive that six-to-seven year interval in your calendar timeframe, and linear time is collapsing by the second as Earth's orbital path is steadily moving her toward fourth density, where your "time" enters the universal continuum. You can't conceive of this because consciously you have no frame of reference for it, but 2012 will be upon you sooner than you can imagine because your "time" is passing faster and faster.

S: OK dear, but I'm not the only one who wants to know that! Here's just one other: "Are the changes Matthew talks about going to happen in our lifetime—will it be several thousand years before Earth returns to its Eden or will it be like 5 years?" Anyway, here are some specific quake questions in emails: Was the earthquake in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan Earth's own doing or was it manmade? Did ET's technology fail to "level out the forces of Nature" in [that area] or didn't they make any attempt to do that? How much national and/or personal karma was involved in the thousands of casualties in the quake that devastated parts of [that area]?

MATTHEW: There was no manmade technology involved and ET intervention would not have been appropriate. The earthquake was Mother Earth's response to the millions of petitions for amended pre-birth agreements so the souls in the affected regions could participate in that successful effort to release a monumental amount of negativity. This selfless act on the part of those who died and those who survived is on behalf of Earth herself, thus gratitude of all peoples would be the most suitable emotion; however, few consciously know this, and commiserating with the survivors‚ overwhelming grief and desperation is your natural heartfelt reaction. If you will please remember my recent message that included the magnified feelings of souls in these higher energies, you know that we share the emotional spectrum of those who volunteered to leave their physical lifetime and those who mourn them.

As in previous catastrophes where the death toll and destruction is heartrending, here again the outpouring of help and compassion has immeasurably increased the light—foreknowledge of this from similar recent events was a factor in the souls‚ request for amended contracts. Later on the grieving families will understand that their beloved members died to give Earth a giant leap forward in her ascension and that they willingly agreed to endure both the sorrow and the hardships the quake has caused.

S: Thank you, dear. The next two questions are related. The first is: Can Matthew give us somewhat of a "roadmap" for how to effectively go about helping and teaching others about our new world?

MATTHEW: That is a good question. The revelations about the deceit that long has controlled life on Earth won't come in one fell swoop. Nevertheless, collectively, the impact of the truth about everything—from Illuminati control in governments and religions to multiple lifetimes throughout the universe to the presence of our space family on, above and within Earth—will be astronomical. The disclosures have started, so the necessary enlightening is not years off, it is now.

I think the wisest guidance is to see the changes that herald the coming of the "new world" from the perspective of the vast numbers for whom this means seeing their foundation of beliefs—maybe even their very life purpose—crumbling. In this delicate re-educational process, relating your own awareness could be interpreted as berating their ignorance, and sensitivity to their emotional state is what is called for. Feel compassion, listen to their cries of confusion, anger, disillusionment and yes, very likely fear about Whatever's coming next?! Hear them out, then let them know that their feelings are understandable and so are their doubts about the validity of the new, shocking information—the deceivers have been masterful for eons. But mainly, provide a gentle safe haven for their questioning and rely on your intuition for the best responses—you'll see that they will be right there when you need them.

S: Thank you, Mash—I think that will be very helpful to a lot of us.

MATTHEW: I hope so, Mother—it's an important part of the job you light workers signed up for. You said there are two questions.

S: Yes. Someone wants to know, "How will education for our young people change in accordance with the changes in government and economy?" I think this is another area where preparation is necessary.

MATTHEW: Indeed it is, but this will be far easier than adult re-education, and it will extend well beyond those two areas into all branches of science, religion, history, and a return to the arts that are so essential for the soul yet have been squeezed out of curricula as funding for education itself has been squeezed. Very young children haven't been indoctrinated with false teachings, so for them it's only a matter of learning truth instead of falsehoods. Teenagers may be more resistant at first simply because rebellion in those ages is still the nature, but they will welcome knowing that they really do have a future to plan for instead of Earth's dire fate that some claim is inescapable. Many souls who have come in during the past decade or two are far advanced in spiritual clarity from the older population, and recognition of their birthright is all they need. The logistical matter of textbook replacement—the writing or editing, printing and distribution—will be done expeditiously, and teachers are being prepared to lecture in conjunction with computerized lessons that also are in preparation stages.

S: OK! Some parents have asked for your suggestions about how they can best help their children with autism or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Probably you know that these conditions affect thousands and thousands of children and the ones diagnosed as ADHD are being treated with prescription drugs.

MATTHEW: Oh, we do know, Mother, and it's a lamentable situation, those conditions that largely are caused by vaccines or other pharmaceutical toxins touted as "health care" and are exacerbated by unavoidable environmental pollution as well as the conflict between mankind's abusive electrical energy direction and the beneficial energies coming in. Although it will be uplifting for parents to know that all manner of dis-ease befalling anyone will be eliminated in the higher density where Earth is going, that does not provide the "now" help they're requesting.

I'm not comfortable giving across-the-board suggestions because each child is unique; however, some general guidelines are sensible for all. No more inoculations of any kind! Have a body chemistry analysis performed by a specialist—I would choose an "alternative" health care provider—who can determine any imbalances and advise corrective measures. Because body chemistry is complex, I think it's wise to consult a professional about even natural supplemental nutrients and obtain the recommended ones in the best quality available. Consider especially gold, a little known but valuable brain enhancer, and again, choose the finest quality in capsule or powder form.

A healthful and balanced diet is essential for optimum well being. Eliminate sodas, foods with artificial sweeteners or other chemical additives, and processed white flour products; reduce consumption of meat, dairy products, and refined sugar and increase raw vegetables, fruit and whole grains. If a child is taking prescribed medication and a new nutrition regimen results in improved attitude and behavior, parents of young children could discuss with the practitioner decreased dosage or elimination of the drug; older children can gauge their body's reactions and advise accordingly. Physical exercise and artistic expression in accordance with the child's age, interests and abilities are significant. My last suggestion but certainly not least in importance is demonstrative loving— hugs, smiles, hand-holding, listening, good humor, patience, reasonable and consistent discipline, participation in the child's activities, encouragement and compliments on progress, clear communication.

Mother, the only other thing I can think of that may be helpful is my explanation of authentic autism, which is quite different from the condition that is given that diagnosis but actually is caused by the toxic ingredients in inoculations given to infants.

S: I'll look for that and copy it.

People are born with this condition, but it is not due to genetic heritage or birth injury. Autism is a self-contained condition the soul chose to experience as a counterbalance to hyperactivity in another lifetime. I don't mean hyperactivity in the sense of an extraordinarily active yet essentially stable individual in mind and body, but rather a glandular malfunction that no amount of admonition or coaxing will relieve.

It is purely a matter of the soul's will that can enable it to overcome autism's natural resistance to emerge from its cocoon. Environmental influences may either accelerate or stifle the autistic child's capacity to learn and become functional within what you would consider a normalcy range. Still, a positive environment in itself is only a buffer between the brain mechanism and the behavior, which would be far worse in apathetic conditions where neither love nor assistance was offered.

Always at soul level there is awareness that this is a lesson chosen, and there is no shame or hardship placed by the soul on its experiencing personage, but rather only love and patience. These are the same qualities the person himself needs from his family for the most positive response to his life's challenges.

S: Done. Now, please comment on President Bush's choices for the Supreme Court.

MATTHEW: Oh my! I'm going to decline commenting and instead repeat what I've said before: When the Bush administration falls—and it will!—all harmful laws and unqualified people in influential positions also will be out.

S: OK, dear! The next group of questions is about the economy. Key issues are manipulated stock markets, unemployment, heavy debt, bankruptcies, taxes, impoverished nations, what investments are safe—can you please speak briefly about those? One writer asked, "Can we survive this mess?"

MATTHEW: You definitely will survive "this mess"! Changes affecting banking policies, reduction or elimination of debt for individuals and nations, fair taxation and wages, social program and job training funding, and stabilized stock markets are being handled behind closed doors, so to say, and relief for financial hardships will come as soon as possible after those changes are implemented. Rectifying the global job market is a more complicated undertaking than changing laws and policies, but this too will benefit from new leadership and harmonious interaction replacing exploitation.

Investment advice is out of my "jurisdiction"; however, common sense says to spend prudently and be wary of get-rich-today opportunities.

Mother, your thoughts about the length of this message are popping in. I believe the next question must be our last.

S: So do I. What is the quickest and surest form of psychological therapy we can give our clients; what is most important in healing psyches?

MATTHEW: Love, the energy of love! That is not a simplistic reply, it is the simple truth. It may be difficult to convince people that learning to love themselves, moving past any guilty feelings, and forgiving themselves and others of perceived wrongs is the "quickest and surest" treatment for psychic trauma, but therapists and clients must try because therein lies the cure.

It is not an overstatement to say that the cure for all current dis-ease afflicting Earth, whether of individual, national or global scope, is love. This most powerful energy in the universe is your soul's original, natural state, yet for many, the concept of loving self and all others is at least elusive if not completely unknown. Putting love into recognizable, tangible forms, if you will, can demystify this ultimate state of well being. Mother, please add my response to the request for a definition of love that is in one of the books.

With that addition, I believe that today we have addressed some of the most pressing issues of soul-searchers everywhere, and so I say to you, dear soul, "Thank you," and to everyone, "All my love."

In simplest terms, love is God's sharing of Himself with all of His creations. Love is the healing force of the universe. Love is within the soul and needs only your allowance of those innate sensations of loving others and receiving their love for you. Love has no limitations, no boundaries to its capacity.

In expression, love is treating others with kindness, fairness, honesty, compassion, helpfulness, caring. If love can be said to have "ingredients," then those are some of the ingredients of godly expression in action.

Knowing that you and God and every other of God's creations are inseparable is love. Knowing that Earth is a sentient, conscious life herself and respecting all of her life forms is love. Realizing that no one can know others at soul level and therefore does not judge them but rather does not condone an action seen as injurious, is love.

Listening to one's godself is love. Living the kind of life that engenders loving self is love. Feeling joy yourself when you see it in others is love. Doing something that brings joy to another is love. Forgiveness of self and others is love. Sharing your resources with full heart is love. Doing good deeds without attaching expectations is love.

Feeling peace of heart and mind is love. The quiet thrill of seeing a sunset or hearing a songbird is love, and a smile is one of the simplest and most radiating expressions of love.

In any or all of these instances and many others that you may encounter that instinctively you know are love in action, you are manifesting your love for and of God.

Mother, I don't think I've told you anything at all surprising. But perhaps it is good to have some references as a guiding light in these times when darkness may seem to be overshadowing the magnificent abundance of love that is in your world.

Subject: Putting The “Coming Pandemic” Into Perspective or SCARING PEOPLE FOR PROFIT

It has been well established that those who get vaccinated against the various plagues are the very ones that the plague hits but leaves the un vaccinated alone. If you get the flu shot be sure to call your favorite undertaker to order your pine box or bonfire. It has been known for a long time that the New World Order is planning to drastically reduce the world population so this much touted pandemic will likely be the one they use. Otherwise why would any sane scientist resuscitate the Spanish Flu virus?

Now read what the government wont tell you.

Putting the "Coming Pandemic" into perspective

Preface - Watch The Birdie. Complete article 4570 words including references and images available instantly by signing up for Convergence Weekly.

The UN and WHO warn of an imminent global bird flu pandemic that could kill even more people than the 20 million to 50 million victims of the Spanish Flu of 1918. Yet the bug they point at has killed just 64 people in Asia since 2003. What’s going on? Get the facts—and some needed perspective

In Pakistan last March, as the avian bird flu virus decimated poultry across Asia, chicken vanished from home menus as families became vegetarians overnight. Thousands of people engaged in selling chickens became unemployed. Yet, not a single case of the feared H5NI avian flu virus had been found anywhere in the country.

By August, Turkey was the 25th country to report an H5N1 outbreak—in birds. But the panic was on as governments around the globe shoved money at two giant drug firms for antibiotics completely ineffective against H5N1 at recommended doses, and a non-approved “vaccine” still in trial stages.

By October 2005, Europe was on full “bird flu alert”. In Turkey and Romania, farmyard birds were being mass-culled. But H5N1 is passed only to people living in close contact with infected birds. The only known human casualties were in Asia, where many households keep birds for pets, and chickens for food.

Nevertheless, France ordered enough antiviral drugs for everyone in the country—at doses too low to be effective. Finland announced it would vaccinate its entire population against the disease—even though no vaccine was available.

Vaccine trials were underway in Melbourne, where tests showed that up to 12- times the normal vaccine dosage is needed to trigger an immune response against H5N1. Unless a more effective replacement is found, crash vaccine programs currently underway will only be able to produce 25 million doses per year.

Once this bird flu strain mutates—which it must in order to ignite a global human pandemic—it will take another 12-18 months to develop and produce a new vaccine.

Is a planet-wiping H5N1 plague as “imminent” as the nuclear-biological attack from Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction previously reported by the same media?

Probably. As the Centers for Disease Control kept insisting: The current risk to Americans from the H5N1 bird flu outbreak in Asia is low. The strain of H5N1 virus found in Asia has not been found in the United States. There have been no human cases of H5N1 flu in the United States.”

In 1997, the first case of H5N1’s spread from a bird to a human was recorded in Hong Kong. The virus caused severe respiratory illness in 18 people, six of whom died. In late 2003, early 2004, more than 100 million birds either died from the disease or were killed in order to control an H5N1 outbreak. Commonly burned or buried alive, the karma from so much mass suffering cast serious doubt on eating chickens.

So far, human infections from H5N1 have been reported in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. The death rate for infected humans is an unnerving 50 percent. But among the 100 or so people reported infected with H5N1, only 64 have died.

So far so good. Nevertheless, in yet another reprise of alarms issued every few years, the World Health Organization kept referring to a coming global flu pandemic as “inevitable”, even “imminent.” So did the UN.

That’s like saying you are certain to die in your lifetime.

Evoking the nightmare of 1918, the Times of London warned of a bird flu pandemic that could infects half the world’s population and kill “even more than the 20 to 50 million who died in the ‘Spanish flu’ of 1918-19.” But bird flu is not spread by humans. As the CDC kept pointing out, “Human infections with avian influenza viruses detected since 1997 have not resulted in sustained human-to-human transmission.”

This doesn’t mean a major pandemic won’t happen, of course. But it’s a little early to panic in Duluth.

Are giant drug companies trying to make us sick by deliberately releasing genetically altered germs? Or are they just screwing up as usual? Is there any difference in the result? All we know for sure is that when Liu Jianlun, a laboratory scientist in Guangdong, became the first SARS victim on March 4, 2003, he was messing around with…H5N1.

This was bad enough. But last April, thousands of scientists around the planet scrambled to locate and destroy vials of a super-dangerous flu strain sent unlabelled among shipments from Meridian Bioscience in Cincinnati to nearly 5,000 labs in 18 countries—to see if their staffs were clever enough to spot it.

Luckily, someone did. H2N2 had already killed as many 4 million people.

Are we worrying about the wrong things? “Pneumonia killed 63,000 Americans in 2000,” points out MD Marc Siegel. Plain old influenza kills another 30,000 Americans every year. But it’s the media-hyped, “relatively minor threats” that are “widely feared.”

So what should we be concerned about? “A reasonable worry is one that is directly tied to a real danger or impending threat,” advises Dr. Siegel. To properly assess the bird flu threat, “Look at the statistical probability of what you are afraid of actually happening.”

That’s easy. If you live in North America, right now—and there is only right now—the chances of bird flu killing you is zero.

Outtakes included in complete article

Emerging influenza strains make a mockery out of “best guess” vaccines…

…“ If a hurricane which we knew was coming caused so much havoc, what will happen if there's a sudden outbreak of a killer virus?”

Pandemics emerge every 30 years or so…

The Spanish Flu of 1918 sprang from vaccines injected into US soldiers. Just like Gulf War Illness…

Why hurry to get injected with dubious “vaccines” filled with mercury, aluminum and other adjuvents and preservatives—

… as the CDC states, “There currently is no vaccine to protect humans against the H5N1 virus that is being seen in Asia.”

… The 2 million doses already on order are only enough for about 450,000 people. But it’s unlikely they can be produced, because dead chickens can’t lay the eggs needed to grow the virus to make more vaccines!

Promoting invisible microbial terrorists is a powerful distraction away from a million dead kids in Iraq. Or the 100,000 Americans who die every year from taking pharmaceutical drugs….

Remember SARS?…

If avian flu is making birds sicken and die, IndyMedia goes on to suggest, “well then the finger needs to be pointed at the living conditions of the birds…”

Evidence For H5N1 Wild Bird Flu Cover-up in Europe Mounts (October 17, 2005)
What about the reports that other birds, including 15 swans, have been found dead on a lake outside the quarantine zones? "A lot of birds have been falling ill, don't ask me how many," he says. "I'm just a human being. I can only tell you what has been happening in Ceamurlia." Later, we hear that the ministry has issued a statement saying that no swans have died on any other lake. However, later on the internet, we see that some Romanian news agencies are reporting that villagers from Ceamurlia first noticed birds washing up on the shores of the lake three months ago and that it was only when the fisherman discovered his own chickens had died that anyone thought to send tissue samples away for testing. It is the most worrying thing we have heard all day.The above comments on H5N1 wild bird flu in Romania overlook the fact that there has been a clear cover-up of H5N1 in Europe since August. In August there were media reports of birds dying in the Volga Delta at the northern end of the Caspian Sea. Reports out of Russia would change almost daily. The Kalmikya region was H5N1 confirmed one day and then denied the next. Confirmation would indicate that H5N1 had migrated form Siberia and had entered Europe in AugustFriday the OIE mission report on H5N1 in Russia acknowledged that H5 had been PCR confirmed in Kalmikya, indicating it has been in Europe since August. As noted above, birds were washing up on the shores of the Black Sea since August. However, no European country reported H5N1 to OIE until last week, when Romania and Turkey issued their reports on H5 infected poultry. H5N1 is a reportable disease that has gone unreported in Europe for three months.Monitoring and reporting of H5N1 in Europe, like Asia, remains scandalously poor. Iran is the third country to report bird deaths last week. However, Iran has maintained that the 3673 birds died from a "mysterious disease" that is not avian influenza. Most countries in the area have also reported initial negative test data. The scandal continues.

The Avian Flu Fright is Politically Timed (Oct 12)
The Avian Flu Fright: Politically Timed for Global “Iatrogenocide” - If avian flu becomes more than a threatened pandemic, it will have done so by political and economic design. This thesis is supported by current massive media misrepresentations, profiteering on risky and valueless vaccines, gross neglect of data evidencing earlier similar man-made plagues including SARS, West Nile Virus, AIDS and more; continuance of genetic studies breeding more mutant flu viruses likely to outbreak, inside trading scandals involving pandemic savvy White House and drug industry officials, curious immunity of these pharmaceutical entities over the past century to law enforcement and mainstream media scrutiny, and published official depopulation objectives. With the revelations and assertions advanced herein, the public is forewarned against this physician-assisted mass murder best termed “iatrogenocide.”* This genocidal imposition is expected to serve mainly economic and political depopulation objectives. (...) In April, 2003, a social experiment called SARS, said to have arrived from Asia, heavily struck Toronto. I was there throughout most of this Asian flu-foreshadowing fright. This bizarre new pneumonia-like illness was named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. It was said to be the latest threat in an ongoing series of attacks on humanity by mysteriously mutating "supergerms." A careful study of the scientific and medical-sociological correlates and antecedents of this “outbreak” revealed something amiss far more insidious than SARS. I critically considered Toronto’s media reaction as any Harvard-trained public health expert in media persuasion behavioral science might. The scourge had all the earmarks of a novel social experiment conducted by white-collar bioterrorist. It seemed clear to me that this unprecedented population manipulation effectively indoctrinated the mass mind in support of a grossly ineffective, albeit legislated, public health response in advance of the arrival of "the Big One." Throughout the “SARS Scam,”(1) repeated references were made to biological agents that might facilitate decimation of approximately a third to half of the world's population. Having extensively reviewed political population control literature and contemporary objectives of leading global industrialists, I noted these predictions were in close keeping with current official population reduction objectives. We have just added two new articles dealing with Vaccinations and the government frauds they expose.

PLEASE do not expose yourself and especially your children to what may be instant death or lifelong permanent damage. Your immune systems will be impaired anyway if you haven't already done them in.

A friend's daughter in the US was forced to take a vaccination not long ago on the pretext she wouldn't be allowed in a school without it. Within three days the child had lost all colouring and is permanently damaged. As yet we do not know the full extent of the damage.

NOTE. There have NEVER been any studies proving the effectiveness of any vaccine.

On read an interview with a Vaccine Researcher who finally decided to check things out and left the industry as a result. If you get a vaccination for anything after reading it you deserve to have your mental capacity and lack of intelligence checked.

The second article at details how a survivor of the 1918 Influenza Epidemic survived. Apparently those who did NOT get vaccinated were the survivors. Those who had been vaccinated died. The same has happened several times since, the vaccinated got the illness and the unvaccinated stayed healthy.

I strongly advocate that you put your brain in gear before taking shots. It is nothing more than a massive fraud being pulled on the world population and is linked to the intent to reduce the world population. The flu shots, by the CDC's own admission is only 5% effective IF THAT. Think I am nuts? That's your prerogative but I have sources that most of you don't and that is what I have been hearing for several years. All this ballyhoo about Bird Flu is just a cover story and laughingly, thanks to killing so many chickens they are now short of the eggs needed to culture the vaccines. That's what one might call a really intelligent move.

Typical American bloody minded stupidity is the re activation of the 1918 Flu virus. Why would any sane "scientist" want to do such a stupid thing but it ties in with the governments intent to hit us with a pandemic. You will have a much greater chance of survival if you stay well away from their vaccines. Don't tell me you haven't been warned.

Charming I am sure. Looks like we UK public will be first to hit the deck with mandatory vaccines, which I think on balance I fear more than the possibility of catching the flu itself. Call me suspicious.

UK plans bird flu vaccine for whole population

19 Oct 2005

LONDON, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Britain plans to buy enough vaccine to protect the entire population as soon as any bird flu pandemic emerges, the government said on Wednesday.

The Department of Health said the country would need to have around 120 million doses available as soon as possible after an outbreak, enough for two shots per person.

The vaccine cannot be made until the precise strain of pandemic flu is established but the government is inviting manufacturers to tender for contracts in advance of this.

Concern about bird flu has swept Europe in recent days after tests confirmed that the disease had infected poultry in Romania and Turkey.

A vaccine is the best hope to prevent millions of deaths should the H5N1 strain now circulating in birds mutate to a form that can spread easily from person to person.

Several companies are working to develop a pandemic flu vaccine, including Sanofi-Aventis SA SASY.PA>, GlaxoSmithKline Plc GSK.L> and Chiron Corp CHIR.O>.

- In the USA, the cost of a single DPT shot had risen from 11 cents in 1982 to $11.40 in 1987. The manufacturers of the vaccine were putting aside $8 per shot to cover legal costs and damages they were paying out to parents of brain damaged children and children who died after vaccination. (The Vine, Issue 7, January 1994, Nambour, Qld)

- In Oman between 1988 and 1989, a polio outbreak occurred amongst thousands of fully vaccinated children. The region with the highest attack rate had the highest vaccine coverage. The region with the lowest attack rate had the lowest vaccine coverage. (The Lancet, 21/9/91)

- In 1990, a UK survey involving 598 doctors revealed that over 50% of them refused to have the Hepatitis B vaccine despite belonging to the high risk group urged to be vaccinated. (British Med Jnl, 27/1/1990)

- In 1990, the Journal of the American Medical Association had an article on measles which stated "Although more than 95% of school-aged children in the US are vaccinated against measles, large measles outbreaks continue to occur in schools and most cases in this setting occur among previously vaccinated children." (JAMA, 21/11/90)

- In the USA, from July 1990 to November 1993, the US Food and Drug Administration counted a total of 54,072 adverse reactions following vaccination. The FDA admitted that this number represented only 10% of the real total, because most doctors were refusing to report vaccine injuries. In other words, adverse reactions for this period exceeded half a million! (National Vaccine Information Centre, March 2, 1994)

- In the New England Journal of Medicine July 1994 issue a study found that over 80% of children under 5 years of age who had contracted whooping cough had been fully vaccinated.

- On November 2nd, 2000, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) announced that its members voted at their 57th annual meeting in St Louis to pass a resolution calling for an end to mandatory childhood vaccines. The resolution passed without a single "no" vote.

Senior White House Officials Face Prospect of Life in Prison for Outing of CIA Agent Plame Unless They Testify for Prosecution

Contact: Ilene Proctor, 310-271-5857, for, Web:

WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 /U.S. Newswire/ --, a large coalition of organizations and citizens dedicated to honest government, has done an analysis of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines and its probable effect on the sentencing of any senior White House official convicted in the Valerie Plame affair. By going after Wilson and his wife, those officials apparently committed serious crimes which they then compounded by obstructing justice and committing and suborning perjury. As a result, they have virtually ensured that, if convicted, they could receive a sentence up to life in federal prison under the United States Sentencing Guidelines, which are used to compute sentences based on severity offense levels. The higher the level, the greater the sentence, and federal courts routinely follow the Guidelines in the vast majority of cases.

The best case scenario for those involved would be a conviction of only a single count of perjury or obstruction of justice, either of which carries a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison. Under the Guidelines, that would probably result in the maximum sentence because both charges have a base offense level of 14, and those convicted will most probably receive enhancements of 3 levels for substantial interference with the administration of justice, 6 levels for victimizing a government employee and family member, 2 levels for abuse of the public trust, and 4 levels for being a leader. These total 29 levels, which equals 87-108 months in federal prison under the Guidelines, far above the five-year statutory maximum, so the final sentence will be five years.

However, federal prosecutors rarely issue one-count indictments, but rather charge every possible violation. In the instant case, it is highly likely that Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald will throw the book at them, by charging conspiracy and violation of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of l982 ("IIPA") (50 U.S.C., section 421), each carrying a maximum sentence of ten years, conspiracy and violation of the Espionage Act (18 U.S.C. 793), each carrying ten years, and multiple counts of perjury and obstruction of justice, each carrying five years. Moreover, because there was an agreement among many people in this case, there will most probably also be an overarching conspiracy charge to violate multiple statutes. It is significant that the IIPA mandates that any sentence under the Act be imposed "consecutively" to any other sentence in the indictment. Id. at section 421(d).

The Federal Sentencing Guidelines reflect the seriousness of a conviction under the IIPA by setting a base offense level of 30 for disclosure "by a person with, or who had access to, classified information identifying a covert agent." In the case of White House officials, the same enhancements mentioned above will be added to that base level, for a total of 42 levels, which requires a LIFE sentence. Of course, since the IIPA only allows for a maximum sentence of ten years, that life sentence could be imposed only by a conviction on multiple counts, such as conspiracy, perjury and obstruction of justice, running consecutively to the IIPA sentence.

Why will these officials receive such a heavy sentence? Well, because the Guidelines are very specific about adding enhancements based on conduct of a defendant. In this case, there will surely be a 6 level enhancement under section 3A1.2(b) because "the victim was a government employee or member of the immediate family of a government employee and the offense of conviction was motivated by such status...." Both Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson clearly meet this definition of a victim since their lives have been risked and they have suffered severe emotional harm.

In addition, because an official such as Karl Rove or Scooter Libby would obviously be considered "an organizer or leader" of the criminal conduct under section 3B1.1, he would receive another enhancement of 4 levels. Moreover, all the defendants' conduct constitutes "an abuse of the public trust" as set forth in section 3B1.3, which would add another 2 levels.

Furthermore, because of the "willing obstruction and impeding of the administration of justice during the investigation" by Rove and those he controls, including the Republican National Committee, the White House Press Spokesman, and GOP leaders, they will receive another enhancement of 2 levels under section 3C1.1.

Finally, because of the grievous harm to our country and the "potential disruption of governmental function," the sentencing court, even if the guidelines were not so severe, would most certainly find, under section 5K2.0(a)(1)(A), aggravating circumstances sufficient to warrant an upward departure from the guidelines.

Significantly, the White House conspirators will not receive any sentence reductions for acceptance of responsibility since that does not apply to persons who obstruct an investigation. Indeed, the only hope for them under the Guidelines appears to be a quick decision to cooperate with the Special Prosecutor, and that does not mean merely meeting with the FBI and testifying before the grand jury. Instead, it means saving their own skin by implicating and testifying against fish bigger than they are, and that means George Bush and Dick Cheney. The days of Watergate are over where corrupt officials only receive a few years in prison for their official misconduct. Now, Fitzgerald and the Sentencing Guidelines control the lives of Rove and company, unless one of the potential defendants jumps ship very soon. Clearly, the only guarantee for Rove and his conspirators to limit their prison time is complete cooperation before indictment. But if their past decisions are any indication, the conspirators will go down with the ship, believing until the end that George Bush will pardon them for their crimes, which he may not be willing to do if he too is indicted or wants to maintain a legacy better than Richard Nixon.

Bush Whacked Rove on CIA leak (Oct 19)
Washington - An angry President Bush rebuked chief political guru Karl Rove two years ago for his role in the Valerie Plame affair, sources told the Daily News. "He made his displeasure known to Karl," a presidential counselor told The News. "He made his life miserable about this." Bush has nevertheless remained doggedly loyal to Rove, who friends and even political adversaries acknowledge is the architect of the President's rise from baseball owner to leader of the free world. As special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald nears a decision, perhaps as early as today, on whether to issue indictments in his two-year probe, Bush has already circled the wagons around Rove, whose departure would be a grievous blow to an already shell-shocked White House staff and a President in deep political trouble. Asked if he believed indictments were forthcoming, a key Bush official said he did not know, then added: "I'm very concerned it could go very, very badly." (...) Today, Sen. Chuck Schumer sent a letter to President Bush asking him to detail his conversations with his top political adviser, Karl Rove, about the White House's leak of the identity of covert CIA operative, Valerie Plame. Schumer, who led the call for an independent investigator/prosecutor to look into this severe national security breach, was deeply disturbed by reports in today's news that President Bush was "furious" about Rove talking to the press about the leak, even after saying that any White House officials caught would be fired.

Cheney Resignation Rumors Fly (October 18, 2005)
Sparked by today's Washington Post story that suggests Vice President Cheney's office is involved in the Plame-CIA spy link investigation, government officials and advisers passed around rumors that the vice president might step aside and that President Bush would elevate Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

CIA leak probe 'widening to include use of intelligence' (October 17, 2005)
Evidence is building that the probe conducted by Patrick Fitzgerald, special prosecutor, has extended beyond the leaking of a covert CIA agent's name to include questioning about the administration's handling of pre-Iraq war intelligence. CLIP

Frank Rich: It's Bush-Cheney, Not Rove-Libby
Asked repeatedly about Mr. Rove's serial appearances before a Washington grand jury, the jittery Mr. Bush, for once bereft of a script, improvised a passable impersonation of Norman Bates being quizzed by the detective in "Psycho." Like Norman he stonewalled. What makes Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation compelling, whatever its outcome, is its illumination of a conspiracy that was not at all petty: the one that took us on false premises into a reckless and wasteful war in Iraq. That conspiracy was instigated by Mr. Rove's boss, George W. Bush, and Mr. Libby's boss, Dick Cheney.

William Rivers Pitt: The Heart of the Matter
William Rivers Pitt writes that Mr. Libby may be a target of Mr. Fitzgerald, but no one should forget the trips Cheney personally made to Langley in order to wring war-supporting evidence out of the analysts. He went himself. His fingerprints are all over the scene.

Cheney May Be Entangled in CIA Leak Investigation
A special counsel is focusing on whether Vice President Dick Cheney played a role in leaking a covert CIA agent's name, according to people familiar with the probe that already threatens top White House aides Karl Rove and Lewis Libby.

NY Daily News: Cheney may be target of probe; Senior Snitch Talking
WASHINGTON - A special prosecutor's intensifying focus into who outed a CIA spy has raised questions whether Vice President Cheney himself is involved, knowledgeable sources confirmed yesterday. At least one source and one reporter who have testified in the probe said U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald is pursuing Cheney's role in the Valerie Plame affair. In addition, at least six current and former Cheney staffers - most members of the White House Iraq Group - have testified before the grand jury, including the vice president's top honcho, Lewis (Scooter) Libby, and two top Cheney national security lieutenants. Cheney's name has come up amid indications Fitzgerald may be edging closer to a blockbuster conspiracy charge - with help from a secret snitch. "They have got a senior cooperating witness - someone who is giving them all of that," a source who has been questioned in the leak probe told the Daily News yesterday. CLIP

Subject: Avnery meets Iraq & Gush ad on false messiah

What Awaits Samira?

Uri Avnery - 15.10.05

A few days ago, at a conference in Europe, I met a charming young lady. Intelligent, well educated, versed in several languages, and, well, very attractive. After a few hours of shopping, she was as elegant as a model, dressed in the very latest fashion. She happens to be a Shiite from Baghdad, where she has now returned. Let's call her Samira.

What struck me most about Samira was her pessimism. The situation is bad, she said, and, whatever happens, it is going to get worse.

For a young, professional woman, the outlook is bleak indeed. The Shiite community is in the grip of the ayatollahs, who are out to enforce a rigid religious attitude towards women. Perhaps not as strict as in the Taliban's Afghanistan or in Khomeini's Iran, but strict enough to make it impossible for a woman to dress as she likes or to pursue the career she wants. Already, Samira is hiding her profession from her neighbors in a well-to-do part of Baghdad, for fear of attracting the attentions of one of the numerous armed militias.

What is life like without a regular electricity and water supply in 40 degrees Centigrade, dependent on generators and improvisation, in a perpetual state of fear, while tanks roam the streets? It's very, very bad, she says, and not getting any better.

The prospect for Iraq? She sees several possibilities, all of them bad. Perhaps a break-up of the state. Maybe a civil war. Certainly an ever growing bloody insurgency. No chance at all for a new, prosperous, democratic, multicultural society.

Iraq looks now like a broken toy, taken apart by a willful, mindless child.

I have avoided writing about Iraq for several months, while still following events there with unflagging fascination, because it is almost impossible to write about it without saying "Told you so!"

The world (and especially Israel) is full of politicians, generals, journalists, academics, intelligence agents and suchlike who have been invariably wrong about everything they have forecast (with rare exceptions, just as a broken clock still shows the right time twice a day.) Yet strangely enough, they remain in demand, their mistakes forgiven and forgotten, even if they had catastrophic results, as often happens in the case of generals and politicians.

Long experience has taught me that "told you so" is by far the most infuriating thing one can say. While the public can forgive commentators who are proven wrong, it will never forgive those who are shown to have been right.

So let's avoid that phrase. Let's just hint that some of the things I said before the war have been proven to be not so very wrong.

Two of these deserve consideration at this time.

First: That the real aim of the war on Iraq was to station a permanent American garrison in that country, supported by a local Quisling regime, in order to secure direct control of the vast oil resources of Iraq itself and indirectly of the oil reserves of the region - Saudi Arabia, the other Gulf states and the Caspian basin. No "Mass Destruction Weapons", no "Removal of a blood-thirsty Tyrant", no "Spreading Democracy", no "Axis of Evil".

Second: That the main result of the war will be the breakup of the country into three mutually hostile components - Sunni Arabs, Shiites and Kurds. Whether this breakup of the Iraqi state is disguised as a "loose federation" or in some other way is immaterial. The important point is whether control over the oil resources is vested in the central or the local authorities.

It was clear that the Kurds would settle for nothing less then de facto independence, keeping their oil revenues for themselves. It was also clear that this would arouse the most profound fears in Turkey, Iran and Syria, all of which have an oppressed Kurdish population which dreams of the eventual establishment of a great, united Kurdistan.

It was also clear that the Iraqi Shiite state would be led by religious figures, most of whom have lived in Iran, who would impose the Islamic code of law, the Sharia. These clerics, while not necessarily becoming stooges of Tehran, will certainly lean in that direction. They will, of course, try to keep the huge oil revenues of their region to themselves.

One does not have to be a prophet of Biblical dimensions to have foreseen that the Arab Sunnis would not accept this lying down. In such a "federation" they will lose power and oil revenues, being thrown from the heights of their might into an abyss of impotence. This led to an "insurgency" which grows ten new heads for every one cut off, because it results from an insoluble problem. Neither the Kurdish nor the Shiite leaders are the kind of people who would relinquish any of their long-yearned-for advantages, for the sake of an Iraq they neither loved nor identified with from the start.

All this could have been easily avoided, if the only superpower in the world had not been led by a tenth-rate politician; if policy had not been shaped by neo-conservatives blinded by a fanatical obsession; if Tony Blair, who should have known better, had not been an incorrigible opportunist.

Millions of decent, innocent Iraqis of all communities, like my new friend Samira, are paying the price.

Ariel Sharon does not care that the meeting with Abu Mazen did not take place. In any case, he never wanted real negotiations, only just some kind of pretense.

But we should care a lot about it. Sharon, who is crowned “the hero of peace” in Israel and abroad and was even invited to speak at the Rabin Memorial Rally (!!!) continues on the ground with deepening the occupation, building the annexation wall and extending the settlements.

The “unilateralism” of Sharon leads us to continuation of the conflict, to suffering anf bloodshed- not only in the coming year, but for many years to come, possibly for generations.

Check especially his recent "...but the shepherds of Aqaba don't make headlines - a request for letter writing" at
(...) By phone we got a bit of urgent news from the tiny village of Aqaba, south-east of Jenin - a place where there had never been any violent outbreak during the present or previous Intifada. Rather, the struggle of Aqaba's few hundred inhabitants - and a hard, ongoing struggle it is - consists of maintaining their daily routine of life, in face of a never-ending harassment by the army. This morning, soldiers have confiscated some fifty sheep belonging to the Dabak family of Aqaba - the entire herd which provides meagre livelihood to a family of thirteen. The 16-year old shepherd Muhammad Dabak went to the army outpost, asking for the sheep to be released. He was beaten up by the soldiers, and kept for several hours at the army position with his hands tied behind his back. Finally, he was sent away empty-handed - the sheep are still there. This seems the peak of a new campaign of harassment which began two weeks ago, targetting especially the tiny village's sheep herds. Sheep were confiscated, as were the ID's of shepherds - who were afterwards harassed or detained for the offence of... going abroad without an ID. And the army also systematically set on fire the grazing fields in the mountains around Akaba, with the clear purpose of denying fodder to the sheep. CLIP

Polar bears face extinction on melting planet

By Anchorage Carrell and Severin Carrell

Oct 9, 2005

The polar bear is one of the natural world's most famous predators - the king of the Arctic wastelands. But, like its vast Arctic home, the polar bear is under unprecedented threat. Both are disappearing with alarming speed.

Thinning ice and longer summers are destroying the bears' habitat, and as the ice floes shrink, the desperate animals are driven by starvation into human settlements - to be shot. Stranded polar bears are drowning in large numbers as they try to swim hundreds of kilometres to find increasingly scarce ice floes. Local hunters find their corpses floating on seas once coated in a thick skin of ice.

It is a phenomenon that frightens the native people who live around the Arctic. Many fear their children will never know the polar bear.

'Are we fighting a losing battle?'

"The ice is moving further and further north," said Charlie Johnson, 64, an Alaskan Nupiak from Nome, in the state's far west. "In the Bering Sea the ice leaves earlier and earlier. On the north slope, the ice is retreating as far as 500km or 600km offshore."

Last year, hunters found half a dozen bears that had drowned about 320km north of Barrow, on Alaska's northern coast. "It seems they had tried to swim for shore... A polar bear might be able to swim 150km but not 600km."

His alarming testimony, given at a conference on global warming and native communities held in the Alaskan city of Anchorage last month, is just one story of the many changes happening across the globe. Climate change threatens the survival of thousands of species - a threat unparalleled since the last Ice Age, which ended some 10 000 years ago.

The vast majority, scientists warned this week, are migratory animals - sperm whales, polar bears, gazelles, garden birds and turtles - whose survival depends on the intricate web of habitats, food supplies and weather conditions which, for some species, can stretch for more than 10 000km.

Every link of that chain is slowly but perceptibly altering.

'There is an earlier break-up of ice'

Europe's most senior ecologists and conservationists met in Aviemore, in the Scottish Highlands, this week for a conference on the impact of climate change on migratory species, an event organised by the British government as part of its presidency of the European Union.

It is a well-chosen location. Aviemore's major winter employer - skiing - is a victim of warmer winters. Ski slopes in the Cairngorms, which once had snow caps year round on the highest peaks, have recently been closed down when the winter snow failed. The snow bunting, ptarmigan and dotterel - some of Scotland's rarest birds - are also given little chance of survival as their harsh and marginal winter environments disappear.

A report presented in Aviemore reveals that this is a pattern being repeated around the world. In the sub-Arctic tundra, caribou are threatened by "multiple climate-change impacts".

Deeper snow at higher latitudes makes it harder for caribou herds to travel. Faster and more regular "freeze-thaw" cycles make it harder to dig out food under thick crusts of ice-covered snow. Wetter and warmer winters are cutting calving success and increasing insect attacks and disease.

The same holds true for migratory wading birds such as the red knot and the northern teal. The endangered spoon-billed sandpiper, too, faces extinction, the report says. They are of "key concern". It says species "cannot shift further north as their climates become warmer. They have nowhere left to go... We can see, very clearly, that most migratory species are drifting towards the poles."

The report, commissioned by Britain's department for the environment, food and rural affairs (Defra), makes gloomy predictions about the world's animal populations.

"The habitats of migratory species most vulnerable to climate change were found to be tundra, cloud forest, sea ice and low-lying coastal areas," it states. "Increased droughts and lowered water tables, particularly in key areas used as 'staging posts' on migration, were also identified as key threats stemming from climate change." Some of its findings include:

Four out of five migratory birds listed by the UN face problems ranging from lower water tables to increased droughts, spreading deserts and shifting food supplies in their crucial "fuelling stations" as they migrate.

One-third of turtle nesting sites in the Caribbean - home to diminishing numbers of green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles - would be swamped by a sea level rise of 50cm. This would "drastically" reduce their numbers. At the same time, shallow waters used by the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, dolphins, dugongs and manatees will slowly disappear.

Whales, salmon, cod, penguins and kittiwakes are affected by shifts in distribution and abundance of krill and plankton, which has "declined in places to a hundredth or thousandth of former numbers because of warmer sea-surface temperatures".

Increased dam-building, a response to water shortages and growing demand, is affecting the natural migration patterns of tucuxi, South American river dolphins, "with potentially damaging results".

Fewer chiffchaffs, blackbirds, robins and song thrushes are migrating from Britain due to warmer winters. Egg-laying is also two to three weeks earlier than 30 years ago, showing a change in the birds' biological clocks.

The science magazine Nature predicted last year that up to 37 percent of terrestrial species could become extinct by 2050. And the Defra report presents more problems than solutions. Tackling these crises will be far more complicated than just building more nature reserves - a problem that Jim Knight, the British nature conservation minister, acknowledges.

A key issue in sub-Saharan Africa, for instance, is profound poverty. After visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo last month, Knight found it difficult to condemn local people eating gorillas, already endangered.

"You can't blame an individual who doesn't know how they're going to feed their family every day from harvesting what's around them. That's a real challenge," he said.

And the clash between nature and human need - a critical issue across Africa - is likely to worsen. As its savannah and forests begin shifting south, migratory animals will shift along with them. Some of the continent's major national parks and reserves - such as the Masai-Mara or Serengeti - may also have to move their boundaries if their game species, the elephant and wildebeest, are to be properly protected. This could bring conflict with local communities.

There is also a gap in scientific knowledge between what has been discovered about the impact of climate change in the industrialised world and in less developed countries. Similarly, fisheries experts know more about species such as cod and haddock than they do about fish that humans don't eat. Many environmentalists are pessimistic about the prospects of halting, let alone reversing, this trend. "Are we fighting a losing battle? Yes, we probably are," one naturalist said.

Britain, which is attempting to put climate change at the top of the global agenda during its presidency of the G8 group of industrialised nations, is still struggling to persuade the American, Japanese and Australian governments to admit that mankind's gas emissions are the biggest threat. These three continue to insist there is no proof that climate change is largely manmade.

And many British environmentalists suspect that Prime Minister Tony Blair's public commitment to a tougher global treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, aimed at a 60 percent cut in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, is not being backed up by the government in private.

Despite US President George Bush's resistance to a new global climate treaty, many US states are being far more radical. Even the G8 communiqué after the Gleneagles summit in July had Bush confirming that the climate was warming.

In Alaska last week, satellite images released by two US universities and Nasa revealed that the amount of sea-ice cover over the polar ice cap has fallen for the past four years. "A long-term decline is under way," said Walt Meier of the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre.

The Arctic's native communities don't need satellite images to tell them this. John Keogak, 47, an Inuvialuit from Canada's North West Territories, hunts polar bears, seals, caribou and musk ox.

"The polar bear is part of our culture," he said. "They use the ice as a hunting ground for the seals. If there is no ice, there is no way the bears will be able to catch the seals."

He said the number of bears was decreasing and feared his children might not be able to hunt them. He said: "There is an earlier break-up of ice, a later freeze-up. Now it's more rapid. Something is happening."

And now, said Keogak, there was evidence that polar bears are facing an unusual competitor - the grizzly bear. As the sub-Arctic tundra and wastelands thaw, the grizzly is moving north, colonising areas where they were previously unable to survive.

Life for Alaska's polar bears is rapidly becoming very precarious.

Antarctic glaciers calving faster into the ocean

18 October 2005 news service - Fred Pearce

The edges of the Antarctic ice sheets are slipping into the ocean at an unprecedented rate, raising fears of a global surge in sea levels, glaciologists warned on Monday.

The findings confound predictions made just four years ago, by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), that Antarctica would not contribute significantly to sea level rise in the 21st century.

In one area, around the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica, glaciers are dumping more than 110 cubic kilometres of ice into the ocean each year, Eric Rignot of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, US, told a meeting at the Royal Society in London, UK. This loss, which is increasing each year, is many times faster than the ice can be replaced by snowfall inland, he says.

The impending ice disaster centres on Pine Island Bay on the shores of the Amundsen Sea, where the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers enter the sea. These glaciers, like many in West Antarctica, are perched on underwater mountains. The meeting heard that warmer ocean waters are circulating beneath the ice and melting their bases at a rate of 50 metres a year.

As this happens, the glaciers float clear of the submarine mountains and slide into the ocean. According to Andy Shepherd at the University of Cambridge, UK, they are discharging ice three times faster than a decade ago.

These glaciers are being dubbed the „plug hole‰ of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. If the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers disappeared, they alone could raise sea levels worldwide by more than a metre, says Rignot.

Corks from bottles

Antarctic glaciers are much bigger than those in warmer climates. They are up to a kilometre thick, tens of kilometres wide and hundreds of kilometres long. Connected to inland ice tributaries, they drain the continent's ice caps, which are the largest stores of frozen water on the planet.

In many places, the glaciologists reported that the recent acceleration in glacier flows has been triggered by the break-up of a series of floating ice shelves at the continent's edge. These shelves acted like a cork in a bottle, holding back the glaciers.

After the Larsen B ice shelf — a 3000 square kilometre floating slab of ice — broke up over three days in 2002, glaciers behind it afterwards accelerated eight-fold. "The ice mass balance of Antarctica is controlled by these ice shelves," says Rignot, who believes Antarctica is now responsible for the majority of global sea level rise.

Researchers also warned that the larger East Antarctic Ice Sheet is not as stable as thought. A recent study suggested that it might be accumulating snow in its high interior — possibly supporting the IPCC‚s predictions — but it warned that little was known about events on the coast (Science, vol 308, p 1898).

Rignot revealed that several major coastal glaciers in the east are now known to be accelerating, like their counterparts to the west.

Chilling Effects of Climate Change in the Antarctic

by Gustavo Gonzalez

October 13, 2005

SANTIAGO - Climate change, which the scientific community links to the increased intensity of tropical storms and other extreme weather phenomena, is also making itself felt in Antarctica, where the "hole" in the ozone layer continues to grow and the increasing break-up of the ice shelves could have played a role in the recent deaths of Argentine and Chilean scientists and members of the military.

This undated photo shows polar stratospheric clouds lit from below near Kiruna, in Sweden. Polar stratospheric clouds, long known to play an important role in Antarctic ozone destruction, are occurring with increasing frequency in the Arctic. As high altitude clouds that form only at very low temperatures, they act as 'breeding grounds' for ozone-destroying molecules. (HO/NASA/Lamont Poole GN/jp/Reuters)

"The hole in the ozone layer expanded this year, and the quantity of ozone destroyed within that area increased as well," Bedrich Magas, a researcher with the University of Magallanes, told IPS from the city of Punta Arenas. Magas carries out daily measurements of ultraviolet radiation in the port city of 120,000, located at the southern tip of Chile.

According to the Argentine Antarctic Institute, in September - the start of the southern hemisphere spring - the hole in the ozone layer reached 28 million square kilometres, representing an eight percent increase from 2004. In addition, the ozone value dropped from 95 to 87 Dobson Units (a measure of the "thickness" of the ozone layer, with 220 units considered the acceptable lower limit).

In satellite images, the hole appears as a fluctuating oval-shaped area that in the most critical period - which peaks in September and October - stretches from Antarctica to the southern part of South America, affecting cities in southern Argentina and Chile like Punta Arenas, 1,000 km north of the Antarctic's King George Island and 2,300 km south of Santiago.

The ozone layer protects the earth from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation, which include skin cancer and cataracts in humans and threats to flora and fauna.

Claudio Casiccia, a physicist who heads the Ozone Laboratory at the University of Magallanes, told IPS that in early October, the hole shrank to 21 million square kilometres, from 24 million square kilometres in August and 28 million square kilometres in September. Nevertheless, the ozone value has remained below 100 Dobson Units.

"The southern portion of South America, Patagonia and the Magallanes region, are under the influence of the Antarctic ozone hole for a short period in springtime, with varying thickness and intensity. This year, we had an event (in Punta Arenas), but there was no major increase in ultraviolet radiation, because the angle of the sun is still steep and it is quite cloudy," said the scientist.

The thinning of the ozone layer is blamed on chemical emissions like halons, which are used in fire extinguishers, CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), used in refrigerators, air conditioners and aerosols, and methyl bromide, used as a pesticide and in building fumigations.

The Montreal Protocol, signed in 1987, set global targets for phasing out these chemicals, which "according to estimates by scientists will allow the ozone layer to recover by the middle of this century," Ana Isabel Zzqiga, head of the governmental National Environment Commission's Ozone Programme in Chile, told IPS.

But the scientific community itself has warned that the greenhouse effect, caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) and other emissions from the burning of fossil fuels blamed for global warming, is also having an impact on the thinning of the ozone layer.

The Kyoto Protocol, aimed at cutting emissions of greenhouse gases - which has not been signed by the United States, the largest single source of these gases - should thus act along with the Montreal Protocol to protect the ozone layer, while it curbs other phenomena attributed to global warming.

Attention has been focused lately on devastating hurricanes like Katrina and Stan, because studies have shown that warmer oceans and rising sea levels are producing stronger tropical storms, said Vicki Arroyo, director of policy analysis for the Virginia-based Pew Centre on Global Climate Change.

Another U.S. scientist, Peter Frumhoff with the Global Environment Programme of the Union of Concerned Scientists, told IPS in late September that "The recent science has clearly linked higher storm intensity to climate change."

The phenomenon of climate change was also blamed for the drought, high temperatures and flooding seen in Europe since 2002.

Casiccia said that while the link between global warming and extreme weather events is still being studied, "it has been accepted that there is an important relationship, in need of further study, between the weakening of the ozone layer and global climate change."

Paola Vasconi, coordinator of the Santiago-based Terram Foundation's environment programme, told IPS that the increase in ultraviolet radiation also drives up temperatures.

"One thing is probably certain: if the climate does not stabilise, the hole in the ozone layer will never close," said Magas, who pointed out that the United States emits "the shocking equivalent of 25 tons of CO2 per capita every year, compared to 3.7 tons for Chile and a global average of three tons per capita."

The link between global warming and the thinning of the ozone layer was demonstrated in 1987 by international measurements taken in the Magallanes region, the scientist pointed out.

"The incredible thing is that after that, efforts were not undertaken to curb emissions of greenhouse gases, which are today, now that CFC emissions have been curtailed, the main cause of the destruction of ozone worldwide," said Magas.

"Although it sounds terrible, the hurricanes are welcome, if that's what it takes to change the mentality of the big, irresponsible polluters," he added.

U.S. "President (George W.) Bush issued a call to 'drive less' and announced a federal programme aimed at cutting fuel consumption - accompanied, of course, by deregulation policies on the environment allowing for increased exploration and drilling for oil in protected wilderness areas," said Magas.

On Sept. 16, International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan underscored the efforts made by the international community to curb the use of ozone-depleting substances.

The next day, two Argentine men lost their lives in Antarctica - biologist Augusto Thibaud and naval officer Tesfilo Gonzalez - when their snowmobile plunged into a deep hidden crevasse.

And on Sep. 28, Captain Enrique Encina and non-commissioned officers Fernando Burboa and Jorge Basualto, members of the Chilean army, died when their snow-cat fell into a 40-metre crevasse in Antarctica.

Magas pointed out that although there have always been crevasses on that continent, making travel dangerous, the ice shelves are increasingly breaking up due to the higher temperatures associated with global warming.

With a surface area of more than 14 million square kilometres, Antarctica is the fourth-largest continent. A full 95 percent of the territory is ice, and the continent accounts for 70 percent of the world's fresh water reserves.

'Law change to curb yobs'

By GEORGE PASCOE-WATSON - Deputy Political Editor

TONY Blair last night sensationally vowed to end the tradition of being presumed innocent until found guilty.

The PM pledged to turn the nation's criminal justice system on its head and hand police sweeping new powers.

He promised fixed penalty notices for ANY crime — forcing suspects to prove their innocence in court.

Mr Blair admitted it was a "watershed" moment in legal history. He said in Downing Street: "It's summary justice. It's tough but in my judgment the only way to deal with it."

Offenders would range from street yobs yelling abuse to international organised crime.

He warned the criminal justice system has lost all hope of tackling crime — and insisted the way to restore justice for "law-abiding citizens" was to rip up centuries of legal tradition.

Mr Blair admitted cops have all but given up pursuing villains through the courts. And he vowed to bring in whatever laws they want.

He said:

If people want us to tackle the new types of crime today you can't do it by the rules of the game we have at the moment. There is international crime, very brutal violent organised crime, anti-social behaviour.

In every respect these types of crime are different from when I was growing up.

People can write articles about going through this process. But it's too complicated and too laborious.

The police end up being hidebound by a whole series of restrictions. It's too complicated. We have to put the duty to protect the law-abiding citizen at the centre of the system.

If you are a police officer patrolling the streets and someone throws a brick through a window or abuses an old lady on the way to the shops . . . If you have to take that person all the way through a long court process, you are not going to do it.

By the time you have filled out all the forms, done the statements, got them to court, three hearings, they have defence lawyers, all the rest of it, forget it.

You may say 'yes, we should do that if we are going to charge someone with an offence‚. But if that's what you do, you don't get the job done.

The reason I introduced fixed penalties was I said 'we have had enough of that'. With serious crime, it takes two or three years. Heaven knows the millions they spend putting it together. We then have trials going on forever and half of them get off in the end. It's ridiculous.

If you want to change it you can change it but not by pretending the same system can be applied with a little bit of effort, because it doesn't work.

(end of quote)

Bringing in the laws is certain to trigger a massive rights backlash and battle with the courts.

Yesterday new Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips warned the PM against "browbeating" judges.

Among the steps in Mr Blair's plan is to stop housing benefit for noisy neighbours.

He also vowed even tougher crackdowns on licensees who give under-age drinkers booze and parents who fail to keep their children in check.

TERROR suspects must be held without charge for up to three months, Mr Blair insisted last night.

The price of cheap beef: disease, deforestation, slavery and murder

If it's unethical to eat British beef, it's 100 times worse to eat Brazilian - but imports have nearly doubled this year.

by George Monbiot

For the past five years I have been at war with Farmers for Action. These are the neanderthals who have held up the traffic and blockaded the refineries in the hope of persuading the government to reduce the price of fuel. It doesn't matter how often you explain that cheap fuel, which allows the supermarkets to buy from wherever the price of meat or grain is lowest, has destroyed British farming. They will stand in front of the cameras and make us watch as they cut their own throats.

But through gritted teeth I must admit that they have got something right. In January the caveman in chief, David Handley, warned that foot and mouth disease had not been eliminated from Brazil, and that imports of meat from that country risked bringing it back to Britain. The buyers brushed his warning aside. In the first half of this year beef imports from Brazil to the UK rose by 70%, to 34,000 tonnes. Last week an outbreak was confirmed in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

You would, of course, expect British producers to throw as much mud as they can at cheap imports. You would expect them to question their competitors' hygiene standards and social and environmental impacts, and Mr Handley has done all of these things. But, to my intense annoyance, he is on every count correct.

Unlike him, I do not believe that British beef farmers have a God-given right to stay in business. We shouldn't be eating beef at all. Because the conversion efficiency of feed to meat is so low in cattle, there is no more wasteful kind of food production. British beef producers would be extinct were it not for subsidies and European tariffs. Brazilian meat threatens them only because it is so cheap that it can outcompete theirs even after trade taxes have been paid. But if it's unethical to eat British beef, it's 100 times worse to eat Brazilian.

Until 1990 Brazil produced only enough beef to feed itself. Since then its cattle herd has grown by some 50 million, and the country has become, according to some estimates, the world's biggest exporter: it now sells 1.9m tonnes a year. The United Kingdom is its fourth-largest customer, after Russia, Egypt and Chile. One region is responsible for 80% of the growth in Brazilian beef production. It's the Amazon.

The past three years have been the most destructive in the Brazilian Amazon's history. In 2004 26,000 sq km of rainforest were burned: the second highest rate on record. This year could be worse. And most of it is driven by cattle ranching.

According to the Centre for International Forestry Research, cattle pasture accounts for six times more cleared land in the Amazon than crop land: even the notorious soya farmers, who have ploughed some 5m hectares of former rainforest, cover just one-tenth of the ground taken by the beef producers. The four Amazon states in which the most beef is produced are the four with the highest deforestation rates.

Cattle ranching, if it keeps expanding in the Amazon, threatens two-fifths of the world's remaining rainforest. This is not just the most diverse ecosystem but also the biggest reserve of standing carbon. Its clearance could provoke a hydrological disaster in South America, as rainfall is reduced as the trees come down. Next time you see footage of the forest burning, remember that you might have paid for it.

Many Brazilians, especially those whose land is being grabbed by the cattlemen, are trying to stop the destruction. Ranchers have an effective argument: when people complain, they kill them. In February we heard an echo of the massacre which has so far claimed 1200 lives, when the American nun Dorothy Stang was murdered - almost certainly by beef producers. The ranchers believed to have killed her were, like cattlemen throughout the Amazon, protected by the police.

For the same reason, and despite the best efforts of President Lula, the ranchers are now employing some 25,000 slaves on their estates. These are people who are transported thousands of miles from their home states, then - forced to buy their provisions from the ranch shop at inflated prices - kept in permanent debt. Because of the expansion of beef production in the Amazon, slavery in Brazil has quintupled in 10 years.

So the government of a country which - despite its best efforts - has failed to stop slavery, murder and environmental catastrophe expects us to believe that its farm-hygiene standards are as rigorously enforced as those of any other nation. Anyone who has worked in the Amazon knows that there is no certificate which cannot be bought, and few local officials who aren't working for the people they are meant to regulate. If foot and mouth disease is endemic in the Brazilian Amazon - most of which is now registered by the government as "safe" - the ministers in Brasilia will be the last to know.

Canada at bottom of OECD, new report

October 18, 2005

OTTAWA – Canada is one of the worst environmental performers in the industrialized world, according to a comprehensive new report released today by the David Suzuki Foundation.

The Maple Leaf in the OECD: Comparing progress toward sustainability finds Canada ranks 28th out of the 30 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development based on 29 key environmental indicators. These include: energy consumption, water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, air pollutants, pesticide use, and amount of protected areas.

The study was conducted by an independent team of multidisciplinary researchers at Simon Fraser University under the direction of Dr. Thomas Gunton.

"Our research found Canada’s environmental performance to be surprisingly low," says Dr. Gunton. "Canada lags behind in almost every performance indicator."

Canada’s worst showings include: 28th in energy consumption, 26th in greenhouse gas emissions, 29th in water consumption, 27th in sulfur oxides pollution, and 30th in nuclear waste and carbon monoxide. Canada fared better in recycling (ninth) and pesticide use (eighth). Canada did not place first in any of the 29 indicators.

Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions are two times higher, and major smog-causing air pollutants are two-to-three times higher than the average for other industrialized countries.

"The ability of other high-income countries, such as Sweden, to achieve much lower levels of pollution shows it can be done," says Dr. Gunton. "There’s no excuse – all it requires is a strong commitment from government."

The study found Canada has shown no improvement over the last decade. Canada’s rank today is the same as it was in 1992: 28th out of 30.

"The Canada we see in this report does not reflect the one we hold in our hearts," says Dr. David Suzuki. "Canadians expect more and they expect better. We should be outraged that we are among the worst in the industrialized world."

Dr. Suzuki called on the federal government to pass a National Sustainability Act, which would require Canada to create a plan on how to reach sustainability. This plan would include clear targets to improve our environmental performance, a timeline and clear accountabilities.

"It is obvious that Canada will not improve its performance unless we enact specific legislation that lays out clear targets and timelines," says Dr. Suzuki. "We are encouraged by stated commitments to sustainability by Prime Minister Martin and Environment Minister Dion, but statements must be followed up with action. We are hopeful the prime minister will take our advice and pass a National Sustainability Act."

According to Dr. Gunton, a National Sustainability Act would provide the necessary legislative framework to ensure Canada does not continue to fall further behind other industrialized countries.

"With Canada’s vast natural resources and knowledge base we should be an environmental superstar," says Dr. Gunton. "All we need now is leadership."

The Maple Leaf in the OECD: Comparing progress toward sustainability is based on a study that evaluated 29 key environmental indicators using the latest data published by the OECD. The study was submitted to a peer review by experts in the private, public and non-governmental sector.

Tar Nation (Grist Summary)
Canada's oil sands boom for business, bust for environment - We have seen our energy future, and it's very, very dirty. By some estimates, the oil sands of northern Alberta, Canada, contain 175 billion barrels of crude, reserves second only to Saudi Arabia's. Problem is, getting usable oil out of the tarry, sticky sand requires clearing vast swaths of forest, burning tons of natural gas, polluting millions of gallons of water, and spewing untold amounts of greenhouse gases. It is, says environmental policy analyst Dan Woynillowicz, "a form of oil extraction where the intensity of environmental impacts is at an order of magnitude greater than any other form of oil extraction we have seen on the planet." Until recently, the high cost of extracting oil from tar sands made the undertaking a financial loser, but rising oil prices have this fledgling industry booming. Resistance is futile, says Canada's environment minister, Stéphane Dion: "There is no environmental minister on earth who can stop the oil from coming out of the sand, because the money is too big." China Crisis: Threat to the Global Environment

By Michael McCarthy - The Independent UK

19 October 2005

Spectacular growth now biggest threat to environment.

Western politicians queue up to sing its praises. Economists regard it with awe and delight. Other countries are desperate to imitate it. Yet there is another side to China's exploding, double-digit-growth miracle economy - it is turning into one of the greatest environmental threats the earth has ever faced.

An ominous sign of the danger is given in a groundbreaking report from Greenpeace, published today, which maintains that China is now by far the world's biggest driver of rainforest destruction. The report documents the vast deforestation driven by the soaring demands of China's enormous timber trade - the world's largest - as the country's headlong economic development sucks in ever-more amounts of the earth's natural resources.

Citing figures from the International Tropical Timber Organisation, the Greenpeace study says that nearly five out of every 10 tropical hardwood logs shipped from the world's threatened rainforests are now heading for China - more than to any other destination.

Yet deforestation is only one of the threats to the planet posed by an economy of 1.3 billion people that has now overtaken the United States as the world's leading consumer of four out of the five basic food, energy and industrial commodities - grain, meat, oil, coal and steel. China now lags behind the US only in consumption of oil - and it is rapidly catching up.

Because of their increasing reliance on coal-fired power stations to provide their energy, the Chinese are firmly on course to overtake the Americans as the world's biggest emitters of greenhouse gases, and thus become the biggest contributors to global warming and the destabilisation of the climate. If they remain uncontrolled, the growth of China's carbon dioxide emissions over the next 20 years will dwarf any cuts in CO2 that the rest of the world can make.

Even that, however, is not the ultimate threat from an economy which is growing at a rate the world has never seen before. According to Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute in Washington DC, the leading American environmental analyst, China's scarcely imaginable growth in the coming years means that the world's population will simply run up against the limits of the planet's natural resources sooner than anyone imagines.

If growth continues at 8 per cent a year, Mr. Brown said, by 2031 China's population, likely to be 1.45 billion on current UN predictions, will have an income per person equivalent to that of the US today. He said: "China's grain consumption will then be two-thirds of the current grain consumption for the entire world. If it consumes oil at the same rate as the US today, the Chinese will be consuming 99 million barrels a day - and the whole world is currently producing 84 million barrels a day, and will probably not produce much more.

"If it consumes paper at the same rate we do, it will consume twice as much paper as the world is now producing. There go the world's forests. If the Chinese then have three cars for every four people - as the US does today - they would have a fleet of 1.1 billion cars, compared to the current world fleet of 800 million. They would have to pave over an area equivalent to the area they have planted with rice today, just to drive and park them."

Mr. Brown, who has been tracking and documenting the world's major environmental trends for 30 years, went on: "The point of these conclusions is simply to demonstrate that the western economic model is not going to work for China. All they're doing is what we've already done, so you can't criticise them for that. But what you can say is, it's not going to work. And if it doesn't work for China, by 2031 it won't work for India, which by then will have an even larger population, nor for the other three billion people in the developing countries.

"And in some way it will not work for the industrialised countries either, because in the incredibly integrated global economy, we all depend on the same oil and the same grain.

"The bottom line of this analysis is that we're going to have to develop a new economic model. Instead of a fossil-fuel based, automobile-centred, throw-away economy we will have to have a renewable-energy based, diversified transport system, and comprehensive reuse and recycle economies. "If we want civilisation to survive, we will have to have that. Otherwise civilisation will collapse."

The Greenpeace report is one of the first major indictments of the catastrophic environmental effects the great Chinese industrial behemoth is starting to have on the rest of the world.

The ecological damage that China's breakneck industrialisation is having on the country itself has been widely recognised. In an interview earlier this year, China's deputy environment minister, Pan Yue, said five of the 10 most polluted cities worldwide are in China; acid rain is falling on one-third of the country; half of the water in its seven largest rivers is "completely useless"; a quarter of China's citizens lack access to clean drinking water; one-third of the urban population is breathing polluted air; and less than a fifth of the rubbish in cities is treated and processed in an environmentally sustainable way. But China's malign environmental "footprint" on other countries has been less widely reported.

John Sauven, forest campaigner for Greenpeace UK, said: "Western politicians, who think only in terms of gross domestic product, have seen China as some sort of economic wonderland. Tony Blair went to China with British businessmen in September and said how he wanted a slice of the cake. But the growth figures mask an environmental catastrophe. The Chinese are ripping the heart out of the world's irreplaceable rainforests to make cheap products like plywood for Western consumer markets."

The Greenpeace report details how, with incredible speed, China has become the world's largest plywood producer and exporter. Its export market has grown from less than one million cubic metres per annum in 1998 to nearly 11 million cubic metres in 2004.

China banned logging in large areas of its own natural forest in 1998 after catastrophic floods, themselves a direct result of deforestation, killed thousands of people. "This ban, coupled with massive growth in Chinese timber processing capacity and a liberalisation of trade barriers, led China to look overseas in its hunger for timber," says the Greenpeace report.

In one area of China investigated by the group, there were no fewer than 9,000 plywood mills taking in vast numbers of ancient hardwood trees from rainforests in countries such as Papua New Guinea, which are used merely to make plywood panels. Greenpeace contends that many of these trees, if not the majority, have been illegally logged.

The report, entitled Partners in Crime, does not blame only China - it accuses timber barons in rainforest countries of corruption in illegally supplying the wood, and builders' merchants and DIY outlets in Britain of culpable negligence in supplying plywood without establishing its origin. Chinese hardwood plywood imports to the UK have gone from 1 per cent of the total in 2001 to 30 per cent this year.

Greenpeace wants the EU, and failing that, Britain alone, to outlaw the import of timber which has not clearly been legally logged. At the moment there are no restrictions on illegally logged timber coming into Britain.
