Antarctica is likely to be the world's only habitable continent by the end of this century if global warming remains unchecked, the Government's chief scientist, Professor Sir David King, said last week.He said the Earth was entering the "first hot period" for 60 million years, when there was no ice on the planet and "the rest of the globe could not sustain human life". The warning -- one of the starkest delivered by a top scientist -- comes as ministers decide next week whether to weaken measures to cut the pollution that causes climate change, even though Tony Blair last week described the situation as "very, very critical indeed". The Prime Minister -- who was launching a new alliance of governments, businesses and pressure groups to tackle global warming -- added that he could not think of "any bigger long-term question facing the world community". Yet the Government is considering relaxing limits on emissions by industry under an EU scheme on Tuesday.Sir David said that levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere -- the main "green- house gas" causing climate change -- were already 50 per cent higher than at any time in the past 420,000 years. The last time they were at this level -- 379 parts per million -- was 60 million years ago during a rapid period of global warming, he said. Levels soared to 1,000 parts per million, causing a massive reduction of life. "No ice was left on Earth. Antarctica was the best place for mammals to live, and the rest of the world would not sustain human life," he said. Sir David warned that if the world did not curb its burning of fossil fuels "we will reach that level by 2100".

CBS to Air U.S. Soldier's Video Diary of Iraq Abuse (Tonight! - May 11, 2004)
WASHINGTON - An American soldier's video diary showing her disdain for Iraqi detainees who died in her charge is to be broadcast by a U.S. network on Wednesday in a further escalation of the prisoner abuse scandal that has shaken the Bush administration and provoked world outrage. CBS, which two weeks ago broadcast the first pictures of Iraqi prisoners being abused in Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, said on Tuesday its "60 Minutes II" program would show video footage depicting conditions there and at another U.S.-run prison in southern Iraq called Camp Bucca. Rumsfeld Backs Iraq Interrogation Methods (May 12, 2004)
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld defended military interrogation techniques in Iraq on Wednesday, rejecting complaints that they violate international rules and may endanger Americans taken prisoner.

The antiwar coalition A.N.S.W.E.R. today filed requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) with the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency seeking the release of photographs, video and other information pertaining to conditions of detention and interrogation by U.S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo. The request was filed by attorneys Mara Verheyden-Hilliard and Carl Messineo, of the Partnership for Civil Justice."We filed this request on behalf of the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition because the government has a legal obligation not to conceal or cover-up criminal action that it has undertaken. The people of the United States have the right to learn the truth about U.S. military operations and the barbaric and criminal treatment of detainees in Iraq and elsewhere," stated Mara Verheyden-Hilliard. "The full release of the information will, we believe, reveal that torture and humiliation of prisoners is not aberrational but rather is an institutionalized mechanism of occupation and conquest." This torture started at the very top (May 5),3604,1209555,00.html
A profound racism infects the US and British establishments (...) The one good thing in all of this is that there are soldiers in the US and British armies who could not live with what was happening and who blew the whistle. The world needs to see the photos coming out of Iraq not as "deviant" but as an authentic message from the heart of the thought system that is seeking to control our planet.

I, too, was tortured in Abu Ghraib (May 11),3604,1214079,00.html
(...) The Red Cross estimates there are 10,000-15,000 prisoners. No figures are available for the number of women. According to the New York Times: "Iraq has a new generation of missing men." Torture has been practised in Iraqi prisons since day one of the occupation. The country's own human rights organisations reported its use as early as last June. But the occupation forces have chosen not to see Iraqis as humans. (...) Torture has left a deep scar on our collective memory, and death is no stranger. We wanted to put an end to both. But occupation has resulted in more than 10,000 civilian deaths. This is the humiliation of a nation. Torture as an instrument of submission is a vital part of continuing occupation. It is not enough to condemn torture and demand an inquiry. The occupation forces still seek to justify their crimes by blaming a few individuals. An apology is acceptable only when it genuinely marks an end to unacceptable practices. That is not the case. Last week occupation forces in Tikrit handed over four dead prisoners to their families, tortured and riddled with bullets. CLIP

Abuse common in U.S. prisons, activists say (May 6)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Horrific abuses, some similar to those revealed in Iraq, regularly occur in U.S. prisons with little national attention or public outrage, human rights activists say."We certainly see many of the same kinds of things here in the United States, including sexual assaults and the abuse of prisoners, against both men and women," said Kara Gotsch, public policy coordinator for the national prison project of the American Civil Liberties Union. "This office has been involved in cases in which prisoners have been raped by guards and humiliated but we don't talk about it much in America and we certainly don't hear the president expressing outrage," she said on Thursday. President George W. Bush has said he was disgusted by the abuse of Iraqi prisoners. Yet, there were many cases of abuse in Texas when he served as governor from 1995 to 2000. For example, in September 1996, guards at the Brazoria County jail in Texas staged a drug raid on inmates that was videotaped for training purposes. The tape showed several inmates forced to strip and lie on the ground. A police dog attacked several prisoners; the tape clearly showed one being bitten on the leg. Guards prodded prisoners with stun guns and forced them to crawl along the ground. Then they dragged injured inmates face down back to their cells. In a 1999 opinion, federal Judge William Wayne Justice wrote of the situation in Texas state prisons: "Many inmates credibly testified to the existence of violence, rape and extortion in the prison system and about their own suffering from such abysmal conditions. "Judy Greene of Justice Strategies, a New York City consultancy, said: "When I saw Bush's interview on Arab TV stations, I was thinking, had he ever stepped inside a Texas prison when he was governor?" Iraq: Civilians Killed by UK Armed Forces and Armed Groups (11 May 2004)
Amnesty International - UK Armed Forces in Iraq have shot and killed Iraqi civilians, including an eight-year-old girl and a guest at a wedding celebration, in situations where there was no apparent threat to themselves or others, says a new report from Amnesty International. The report also details political and so-called 'moral' killings in the UK-administered south, by armed groups and individuals: former Ba'athists, professionals, alcohol sellers and shopkeepers selling music and videos have reportedly been killed, yet no prosecutions have been brought. Many cases of civilian killings by UK Armed Forces have not even been investigated. Investigations by the Royal Military Police (RMP) have been secretive, with families given little or no information about their progress. Amnesty International is calling for a civilian-led investigation into all killings by UK Armed Forces, with the findings made public. "Far from being liberated, the people of Iraq continue to live in fear and insecurity," Amnesty International said. "Armed groups strike with seeming impunity. Killings by UK armed forces, in situations where they should not be using lethal force, are examined in secrecy and behind closed doors. Instead of the UK Armed Forces deciding whether to investigate themselves when people are killed, there must be a full, impartial and civilian-led investigation into all allegations of killings by UK troops."

Video Shows Beheading of American in Iraq
CAIRO, Egypt - A video posted Tuesday on an Islamic militant Web site showed the beheading of an American civilian in Iraq , and said the execution was carried out by an al-Qaida affiliated group to avenge the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers. The video bore the title "Abu Musab al-Zarqawi shown slaughtering an American." It was unclear whether al-Zarqawi - an associate of Osama bin Laden - was shown in the video, or was claiming responsibility for ordering the execution. Al-Zarqawi also is said to have ties to terrorist groups ranging from Ansar al Islam in Iraq to Egyptian Islamic Jihad. He's believed to be behind many attacks in Iraq, including numerous high-profile operations. The video pictures of the execution showed five men wearing headscarves and black ski masks, standing over a bound man in an orange jumpsuit - similar to a prisoner's uniform - who identified himself as Nick Berg, a U.S. civilian whose body was found on a highway overpass in Baghdad on Saturday. "My name is Nick Berg, my father's name is Michael, my mother's name is Suzanne," the man said on the video. "I have a brother and sister, David and Sarah. I live in ... Philadelphia." There was no way to be certain the tape was authentic. CLIP - THE PERFECTLY TIMED RELEASE OF THIS GRAPHICALLY CRUEL EXECUTION IS SURE TO HELP DEFLECT ATTENTION FROM THE AMERICAN TORTURES SCANDAL. Muzzling Michael, Muzzling Me - By Greg Palast (May 6)
When the fattened cats at Disney put the kibosh on Michael Moore's new film, "Fahrenheit 9-11," they did more than censor an artist. Gagging Moore is only the latest maneuver in suppressing some most uncomfortable facts: the Bush Administration's killing off investigations of Saudi Arabian funding of terror including evidence involving a few members of the bin Laden family in the USA. I know, because, with my investigative team at BBC television and The Guardian of Britain, I wrote and filmed the original reports on which Moore's new documentary are based.

The Unconscious Country -- Righteous Indignation, Nakedly Displayed (May 11, 2004)
Have we heard from everyone yet? The President blurted out how "disgusted" he was when he saw the photographs; the Secretary of Defense cringed at the "pictures" that had far greater impact than words alone; Senator Warner expressed "shame" that such vivid images of American wrongdoing had been on display for the whole world to see; all of the 24 members of the Armed Services Committee of the Senate offered how displeased, outraged, offended, and nauseated these explicit and un-American photos made them feel; even John Kerry checked in noting that the President should take full responsibility for this shameful display that has humiliated America before the entire world. How courageous to witness this righteous indignation by America's pin-striped warriors as they cringe before the visible, graphic, four-color "pictures" that capture, as words alone cannot because they can be so easily skipped over, the horror of this "war" that they perpetrated on a defenseless people at the instigation of a President committed to the defense of Israel, as Senator Hollings has noted recently, a "just" war wrapped in lies and effectively executed with the latest state of the art (SOA) weapons that suck the living air from the lungs, that pepper a child with pellets tearing the skin in hundreds of places, that cut cars into slices as easily as slicing a loaf of bread, that sear the eyes and the throat with devastating pain as the depleted uranium seeps silently on the wind blown ash of the bombed out home. How courageous these men and women beating their chests before the whole world demonstrating like paid mourners their grief at the outrage even as they display the "openness" of the "Democracy" that they bring to the infidels through their "precision" war that cleanses the evil from their corrupt regime leaving only the good to blossom in the "greater middle east." (...) Where was their righteousness when the bombs began to fall on cities that had no air force to defend their residents, when pictures arrived showing fathers cradling in their arms their dying daughters, mothers weeping beside their mutilated children in dingy hospital beds, the graphic horror of little twelve year old Ali Abbas, armless and orphaned by a precision missile, the air pressing down over his skinless body. How righteous can a Senator be if he or she is responsible for placing our soldiers in an illegal war, a war conceived in secrecy by a band of self-serving ideologues, souls sold to Charon, bound in servitude to the state of Israel, a war reveled in by the Zionist evangelical hordes that grovel before ancient myths that make them "Chosen" in the eyes of their imagined God, a war declared and owned by the industrial- military complex that feeds itself on the oil and gas reserves of nation states that it buys and controls with American tax dollars, indeed, a war that keeps the Senators in power through the paid contributions to their re-election chests by these same corporations? How righteous to demand that someone beyond a private or sergeant be chastised for demeaning America before the world! CLIP - A MUST READ!

High-Energy Laser Destroys Large-Caliber Rocket (May 11)
As the scope of battlefield threats continues to expand, so does the versatility of a high-energy laser system to defeat them. The U.S. Army's Mobile Tactical High Energy Laser (MTHEL) testbed destroyed a rocket on May 4 that's larger, faster and that flies higher than previous threats destroyed by the laser weapon demonstrator. Northrop Grumman Corporation built the demonstrator for the Army and the Israel Ministry of Defence (IMoD). (...) MTHEL will be the first tactical and mobile, directed-energy weapon capable of shooting down rockets and other tactical targets in flight to protect deployed forces and civilians of the U.S. and its friends and allies. (...) In testing to date, the MTHEL testbed has destroyed 28 Katyusha rockets and five artillery shells in flight.

Integrated Testing Of First Airborne Ray Gun Completed
Sunnyvale CA - Apr 22, 2004 - Lockheed Martin has completed factory testing of the optical benches for the Airborne Laser's Beam Control/Fire Control (BC/FC) system. The Airborne Laser (ABL) is the first megawatt-class laser weapon system to be carried on a specially configured 747-400F aircraft, designed to autonomously detect, track and destroy hostile ballistic missiles.

US prepares for plague of Brood X (May 12),3604,1214662,00.html
The headlines say it all: "They're coming!" "Region prepares for invasion", "Vanguard of Brood X marks its spot". Or as the Los Angeles Times put it: "Noisy little buggers about to hit the East". The "noisy little buggers" in question are cicadas, known as Brood X because of the long time they spend underground as juveniles. A few come out every year, but every 17 years something extraordinary happens in the eastern US as billions emerge across several states. The result is a noisy, sticky, scrunchy mess. "Our house and the yard are now covered with them," wrote an excited visitor to "It was quite amusing watching my wife sprint to her car with an umbrella over her head!" But while the mess left by the inch-long insects will present an inconvenience during the six weeks they are expected to be present, it is the noise that will create the true discomfort. Each male cicada produces a mating call so loud it registers between 80 and 100 decibels, the equivalent of a noisy car engine or a lawnmower. With anything between 100,000 and 1m expected per acre, the noise should be phenomenal. The 17-year Brood X hibernation period comes to an end when the inch-long nymphs emerge from the ground, shed their skins and turn into adults with black bodies, red eyes and orange-veined wings. After a week, the female cicadas will lay eggs, which hatch after another six weeks. The babies, or nymphs, then fall to the ground and burrow into the soil, where they stay, sucking on the sap of tree roots, for another 17 years, or until 2021. CLIP

They're Here -- Cicada Cycle Fascinates U.S.
(...) "Brood X is likely to be the largest insect emergence on Earth," said Keith Clay, a cicada expert at Indiana University. Starting this week, across much of the eastern United States, from Georgia north to southern New York and as far west as Illinois, the cicadas will emerge from their 17 years of sucking on tree roots underground to engage in a two-week orgy of calling, mating, laying eggs and then dying. And things that eat cicadas, from fish and birds to dogs, will gorge on them in a mad frenzy. If history is anything to go by, their noise will drive barbecues indoors, disrupt weddings and graduations and waken children. Then they will die en masse. "They rot very quickly and they smell really bad for a few days and will disappear on their own," Clay said. CLIP

Thousands of Britons may be forced to wear charcoal masks and stay indoors this summer to avoid deadly fogs of ozone that will pollute the country during heatwaves, scientists have warned. They have discovered that last August's heatwave caused plants and trees to release waves of a chemical called isoprene, which contributes to the production of ozone in the air. Scientists now believe ozone killed up to 600 people last summer.'Temperatures topped 100F (37.7C) last summer for the first time since UK records began, and similarly intense heatwaves will become increasingly frequent as global warming intensifies. Current projections suggest they could happen ten times more often,' said Professor Alan Thorpe, of the Centres of Atmospheric Science. 'Among all our other problems, we are going to deal with severe ozone pollution.'Ozone, which is particularly dangerous for children, old people and asthmatics, is produced when strong sunlight breaks up the nitrogen oxides released by car exhausts. In recent years Britain has made major improvements in reducing these oxide levels in the air, and hopes rose that the problem was under control. But the latest ozone study, carried out by a team led by Alastair Lewis, of York University and funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, has discovered that a dangerous new factor arises when temperatures soar into the high 30s.'We went to Chelmsford to study ozone and isoprene levels last year,' said Lewis. 'By chance, we picked the two weeks of the heatwave. What we discovered was startling. When the temperature reached the high 90s and topped 100, plants and trees ... start to produce greatly increased amounts.'It is thought that isoprene acts as a kind of heat-shock molecule, protecting leaves from damage when temperatures rise above 35C. When plants are short of water, they produce even more. CLIP

Sudan rebels 'killing for ivory' (7 May, 2004)
Ivory trinkets are openly for sale in Kinshasa - Poachers linked to the Sudanese SPLA rebels are killing elephants for ivory in the Democratic Republic of Congo, say national park authorities. A spokesman said poaching began for meat two years ago in the Garamba National Park near the border with Sudan, but the object now was ivory. A park official told the BBC that 200-300 people were involved. He estimated only 14,000 elephants remained in DR Congo compared to 90,000 before the country's war began in 1997. CLIP

Congo's war killing gorillas (April 29)
AMGOMA, Congo (AP) -- Years of civil strife in eastern Congo have destroyed the habitat of the eastern lowland gorilla, cutting the apes' population by more than 70 percent in the past decade, experts said Wednesday. With the number of apes estimated to have dropped to 5,000 -- down from about 17,000 in 1994 -- a U.S.-funded program is trying to stem the habitat loss by creating community nature reserves."The rate of decline of this subspecies is unprecedented," Clare Richardson, who heads the Atlanta-based Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, told The Associated Press. The number of gorillas began declining seriously after millions of people fled their homes during civil wars in Congo and neighboring Rwanda, taking refuge in the forests that are home to the apes, known scientifically as Gorilla beringei graueri. Taxpayers Losing Millions as Bush OK's Logging in Roadless Forests (May 12, 2004)
The Tongass and Chugach National Forests contain some of the largest remaining stands of roadless ancient temperate rainforest in the U.S. They hug the coast of southeast Alaska, providing habitat for numerous wildlife species—river otters, grizzly bears, bald eagles, mountain goats, wolves, salmon, and more. Vital local industries, including commercial fishing and tourism, depend upon the health of the Tongass and Chugach. [1]The Roadless Area Conservation Rule, enacted in January 2001, protects areas like these from commercial logging. It also protects against oil and gas drilling, as well as extensive off-road vehicle use. [2] In May 2001, Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman expressed support for the Roadless Rule, calling it "the right thing to do." [3] But when the state of Alaska filed a lawsuit in 2001 the Bush administration chose not defend the rule. [4] Instead, last June it proposed exempting the Tongass from the Roadless Rule's protection. During the 45-day public comment period, about a quarter of a million citizens sent in comments. Laurie Cooper, manager of the Alaska Rainforest Campaign, told BushGreenwatch that "99 percent of these were in favor of keeping protections on both the Tongass and the Chugach. The public is very much in support of protecting our last wild forests."Nonetheless, last December the Bush Administration announced the exemption of the Tongass from the Roadless Rule. [5] According to Cooper, the indefinite, supposedly temporary, exemption of the Tongass opens up 9.3 million acres of ancient forest for road development and timber sales. If extended to the 5 million eligible acres of the Chugach, a quarter of the land originally covered by the Roadless Rule will be unprotected. CLIP

The looming oil crisis will dwarf 1973
By Paul Erdman,
May 5, 2004

Editor's note: This is the first in a three-part series by CBS MarketWatch columnist Paul Erdman.

HEALDSBURG, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- As the price of crude oil keeps rising toward $40 a barrel and beyond, it has become increasingly clear that the world is heading toward a major oil crisis -- in terms of both price and supply -- that will dwarf that of 1973.

There can be no doubt that the fall of the House of Saud would be thrust the entire Western world into an energy crisis of unprecedented proportions.

For many of us who have been observers of global energy trends for what now amounts to decades, this has become not a matter of "if" but rather one of "when." We are facing a convergence of three forces that will have a potentially explosive effect on the market for crude oil.

They are:

1. A growing geopolitical crisis in the Middle East, which is now threatening to spread beyond Iraq to Saudi Arabia, the world's largest producer and exporter of crude oil.

2. A surge in global demand for energy and particularly crude oil and its derivatives, fueled by the recovery of both the American and Japanese economies and the unprecedented growth of China, which has just replaced Japan as the world's second largest consumer of crude oil.

3. A structural deterioration of the world's oil supply. What is involved here is nothing short of an imminent peaking out of production of crude oil on a global basis -- known by energy industry insiders as "Hubbert's Peak" -- which would turn a cyclical supply/demand crisis into a structural energy crisis of unprecedented proportions.

Where the role of geopolitical events on the price and supply of crude oil is concerned, the early warning signals of a major crisis are now coming in every week. In late April it came in the form of a terrorist attack on the Persian Gulf oil terminal through which 90 percent of Iraq's crude oil exports flow. The attack forced the temporary shutdown of the facility. This event merely adds to the mounting evidence that those who have been trying to convince us that Iraq will soon reassume its role is a major supplier of oil to the world market -- as much as 3.5 million barrels a day this year, and 5 million barrels per day within five years -- have been leading us down the garden path.

As a result of the disastrous security situation prevailing in Iraq, all attempts at restoring the output potential of its oil field have now been put on an indefinite hold. Even the first $20 billion dollars of funding originally committed to needed repairs of the facilities there has been cancelled. The sad truth is that in the foreseeable future Iraq will supply less crude oil to the world market than it did before the war.

But compared to what could happen inside its neighbor to the south, all this barely deserves a footnote. The first indications that the supply of oil from the entire Mideast may be on the edge of implosion are now beginning to take on concrete and unmistakable form.

I refer here to the massacre of five employees of the Swiss-based ABB who had been contracted out to run a petrochemical a joint venture of Exxon Mobil and Saudi Basic Industries Corp in Saudi Arabia. It was an inside job. Their killers were Saudi nationals who worked there. This prompted the US ambassador to Saudi Arabia to urge all US nationals -- numbering in the tens of thousands -- to leave the country immediately, because neither the kingdom nor the United States can guarantee their security. This represents a retreat by the United States of historical proportions.

Since World War II, our country has essentially acted as a protectorate of the rulers of Saudi Arabia, the House of Saud, in return for that nation's commitment to act as the great stabilizer of both the supply and price of crude oil in the global market for this key commodity. Saudi Arabia is uniquely able to play such a role, since it is universally recognized as the world's key "swing" producer of crude oil. On average its output of 8 million barrels a day accounts for 10 percent of the world's supply of crude petroleum, almost all of which is exported. But what is perhaps even more significant, Saudi Arabia is in a position to increase output and exports to 11 million barrels a day almost overnight should a supply crisis occur elsewhere in the world.

Were, however, the rulers of this supplier of last resort be brought down by the revolutionary forces of the Islamic Fascists whose numbers seem to be increasing geometrically inside Saudi Arabia, their first step as the nation's new rulers would be to suspend all oil exports, demonstrating for all to see the ultimate power which Islam wields over the West.

For there can be no doubt whatsoever that the fall of the House of Saud would thrust the entire Western world into an energy crisis of unprecedented proportions. Lest there be any doubt about this, as Larry Goldstein, president of the Petroleum Industry Research Foundation told the Wall Street Journal this week: A disruption of Saudi oil supplies is "one event to which no one has an answer."

As will be described in the next article in this series, such a supply crisis could hardly come at a worse time. The world's dependence on oil is spiking with the revival of economic growth in the U.S. and Japan, and the emergence of China as a major competitor for the limited supply of petroleum, even as all attempts to introduce energy conservation on a major scale have been essentially abandoned.

Editor's note: The author of this series has equity positions in three major international oil companies: ChevronTexaco, ConocoPhillips, and Exxon Mobil.

Krugman: The Oil Crunch
Before the start of the Iraq war his media empire did so much to promote, Rupert Murdoch explained the payoff: "The greatest thing to come out of this for the world economy, if you could put it that way, would be $20 a barrel for oil." Crude oil prices in New York rose to almost $40 a barrel yesterday, a 13-year high. Those who expected big economic benefits from the war were, of course, utterly wrong about how things would go in Iraq. But the disastrous occupation is only part of the reason that oil is getting more expensive; the other, which will last even if we somehow find a way out of the quagmire, is the intensifying competition for a limited world oil supply.

U.S. asks all citizens in Saudi Arabia to leave
MANAMA, MAY 2 -- A series of attacks by militants in the Saudi industrial city of Yanbu on Saturday has triggered the departure of around 50 workers belonging to a firm that was targeted amid a fresh warning by the U.S. embassy in Riyadh that all American citizens in the oil rich Gulf country should depart. A spokesman of the firm ABB Lummus that was attacked said that an estimated 100 people that include the families of the expatriate workers would be leaving Yanbu in a "couple of days." The attack led to the deaths of two Americans, two British and an Australian national, while a Canadian and a U.S. citizen were wounded. Two Saudi security personnel were killed and 25 others were injured. (...) e U.S. embassy in Riyadh reiterated its earlier warning that all American citizens in Saudi Arabia, estimated between 30,000 and 35,000 should leave. The embassy repeated its April 15 warning, "Private American citizens currently in Saudi Arabia are strongly urged to depart." An embassy spokeswoman added, "Our advice stands. Americans should not travel to Saudi Arabia and those that are here should depart." There were no immediate indications that an American exodus from Saudi Arabia was about to begin. Analysts said that such a move would be detrimental to Saudi Arabia's oil-based economy that depends on expatriates. Saudi Arabia's English daily, Arab News said that following the shooting, gunmen tied the body of one of foreigners to the rear of a Land Cruiser and dragged it for nearly 3 km before it broke loose. Oil Flirts with Record on Supply Fears (May 12)
Oil prices surged to within a hair's breadth of an all-time high on Wednesday on concern that producer group OPEC may not pump enough oil to meet rapidly accelerating world oil demand, dealers said. A fresh fall in U.S. gasoline stocks reinforced concern that U.S. refiners will have trouble making enough of new cleaner-burning gasoline grades for peak summer holiday driving demand, which traditionally kicks off at the end of May. U.S. light crude hit a peak at $40.92 a barrel, 23 cents off the $41.15 all-time high reached in October 1990 after Iraq (news - web sites) invaded Kuwait. London Brent crude was up 76 cents at $38.12 a barrel. Importing nations are increasingly worried about the economic fallout of higher energy costs. The price spike has come during the second quarter, when world oil demand is at its lowest seasonal ebb, raising concerns about prices later in the year as demand rises again. President Bush (news - web sites) remains worried about rising gasoline prices, which are forecast to peak at a national average of $2.03 a gallon in June, and are already at record highs, the White House said on Wednesday. (...) World oil demand is forecast to grow by the largest absolute rate since 1988, the International Energy Agency, advisor on energy to 26 industrialized nations, said in its monthly Oil Market Report. OPEC President Purnomo Yusgiantoro of Indonesia said on Wednesday the cartel is already pumping more than two million barrels daily in excess of official supply limits in a bid to cool world oil prices. “Awakening to clean energy solutions”

Purpose and Mission

The New Energy Movement is a broad-based public movement dedicated to the study and promotion of peaceful and sustainable solutions for an imperiled planet. We believe solutions exist and can be implemented if we adopt sensible public and private policies. We seek public jurisdiction over questions of peace and sustainability. We support a massive shift of federal priorities away from weapons programs to initiatives which would identify and implement sustainable solutions to our pressing environmental, socioeconomic, and geopolitical problems. We seek to work in concert with existing environmental, educational, business, and governmental groups, other progressive movements, and individuals who agree with these goals, without prejudice or vested interest as to the best means of accomplishing them.

We recognize that the single most highly leveraged opportunity for advancement toward solving complex global problems lies in a transformation in the way human civilization generates and utilizes energy. New Energy Movement is focused on facilitating this transformation.

Two men arrested after high-speed chase in Tennessee

Associated Press

May 09, 2004

ERWIN, Tenn. - Two Israeli men who led the Unicoi County sheriff on a high-speed chase in a rented moving truck were placed under arrest and are being investigated by the FBI, local officials said.

Shmuel Dahan and Almaliach Naor, both from Israel, were being held without bond Sunday afternoon at the Unicoi County Jail. The truck, rented from a Ryder office in Mars Hills, N.C., was being held in the county garage pending an FBI investigation, officials said.

Dahan is charged with reckless driving, littering, false identification and evading arrest, while Naor faces charges of false identification and evading arrest, an officer with the Unicoi County Sheriff's Department who would not give his name said Sunday.

An investigation by the FBI is ongoing and more charges are possible, he said. A woman who answered the phone at the FBI's Knoxville office said there was no one available to answer questions about the arrest.

The incident began late Saturday afternoon when Sheriff Kent Harris noticed a rental truck traveling at a high speed along former U.S. Highway 23, a lightly-traveled highway near the North Carolina state line.

"I was really concerned because the driver would not stop after I flashed my headlights for nearly three miles," Harris said. "He was weaving back and forth and I was wondering what a large (rental truck) was doing on the two-lane highway late Saturday afternoon instead of the faster I-26 Interstate."

Harris said he saw the men throw something from the truck while they were being pursued. Officers scouring the area later found a vial containing an unknown substance along the roadway, he said.

Once the men were apprehended, officers also found a "Learn to Fly" brochure in the truck, leading Harris and others to express concern about security at the Nuclear Fuel Services plant in Erwin.

"I got a sick feeling when I saw it," Harris said.

Dahan also gave authorities a fake Florida driver's license issues in Plantation, Fla., he said, while Naor produced a fake identification card.

Harris subsequently contacted the FBI, the federal Bureau of Tobacco and Firearms and other local authorities to look into the situation.

"We're not overreacting," Harris said. "We have a responsibility to protect the citizens of Unicoi County and that's what I'm going to do at any cost. I'd rather overreact, if that's what you call it, than be sorry later."

(...) William B. Lawson, one of the lawyers appointed --- WHO HAS “APPOINTED” THESE LAWYERS?!! -- to represent the Israeli men, said they rented a truck and planned to haul furniture, but accidentally got off the interstate and got lost. The sheriff said he saw the men throw something from the truck while they were being pursued. Officers scouring the area later found a vial containing an unknown substance along the roadway, he said. Harris said a witness brought troopers a vial the men had thrown out of the truck. Harris says when it was shaken, the thick liquid in the vial became warm. Lawson said the vial contained a "fuel source," but he added that it hasn't been identified and authorities were treating it with caution. [...] Special Agent Gary Kidder, spokesman for the FBI's Knoxville field office, said they were not investigating the two men, but merely monitoring the situation. Harris said Dahan gave authorities a fake Florida driver's license issued in Plantation, Fla., while Naor produced a fake identification card.

Subject: Fw: Forget The Trial, Get The Rope: Bush Approved The Torture!!!

Below is interesting piece of information however, we must not forget that this all links in to the secret society network which also involves Blair and the ruling families. See the book 'Thanks for the Memories' by Bryce Taylor. Mind control is happening everyday in our society not just in the appalling treatment of those caught up in war, may are suffering everyday. Furthermore, everyone is led to believe that America is the seat of global power, they could not be more mistaken, - it's LONDON!! This is the twist. London is the eye of the spider’s web. It is the financial centre of the world. This is the real issue and one that we must awaken too and the ultimate agenda.

Forget The Trial Get The Rope: Bush Approved The Torture!!!

May 9, 2004

From the Streets of Little Beirut

Glen Yeadon

Appalling, shocking, repulsive are some of the words used to describe the pictures taken by U.S. soldiers torturing Iraqis. With a flick of a camera's shutter CBS's Sixty Minutes II had captured the essence of one of this war's dirty little secrets. The report jerked the world's collective conscience to attention and focused on the appalling behavior of U.S. troops in Iraq as the photos of the torture taking place at Abu Ghraib prison aired freely around the globe, except in two countries. In Iraq the U.S. controlled media banned the airing of the photos and in the U.S. the distribution was severely limited.

Repercussions followed immediately as the Bush administration desperately tried to contain the damage. On the first day after the airing of the photos Bush feigned a personal disgust of the torture during a White House press briefing. A general, a sergeant and some privates were dismissed and face possible charges. The administration blamed the incident on a few rogues who lacked proper training and claimed it was an isolated incident. The Pentagon appointed the general who was in charge of Camp X-ray to take over managing of the prison in Iraq. Later in the week Bush was forced to apologize. Everyday brought new revelations. By the end of the week the dust still had not settled as Seymour Hersh revealed the existence of a hitherto secret army report by Army Major General Antonio Taguba. The report is criminally damaging to this administration. Bush claims he has not seen the report and blamed Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld for failing to show him the report.

While the shutter captured the gruesome horror in graphic detail, it missed capturing the full scope of the incident, as did CBS. This was not an isolated incident. It was not the result of a few rogues. Rather this incident was the result of careful long-term planning. In fact Bush and every other high official of this administration approved of the torture and we have their own words on that. The full scope leads down a dark trail, involving CIA mind control programs, child abuse/pedophile control rings, Nazi scientists and the vital recognition of the Bush family's willful and voluntary association for more than 80 years with Nazi elements.

Within days of 9/11 members of the Bush administration including Bush proposed the use of torture. They claimed because 9/11 was an act of terrorism the Geneva Convention did not apply because terrorist suspects were not prisoners of war instead in an unprecedented form of Texas style verbal gerrymandering suspects were to be classified as 'enemy combatants'. Even in the shocked post 9/11 environment this raised a few eyebrows among the liberals and those that value our constitutional rights. In fact they even went further in supporting the assassinations of suspects that could not be captured.

This is the real story behind the torture reports the media has left out. For those that still fail to remember how this administration approved torture I suggest a trip to the local library and reading the immediate post 9/11 newspapers. You will find that all the top officials Bush, Cheney, Rice, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Powell and others approved the use of torture on terrorist suspects.

This incident was by no means an isolated. A quick Google search of the web will reveal reports of torture and mistreatment of prisoners as early as January 2002. In a February 2002 article appearing in the Guardian, Wayne Madsen a former U.S. navy intelligence officer told the Guardian the US was using two methods of torture. The first he referred to as "lite" torture or psychological torture. (Note this is the torture method linked to mind control and child abuse and will appear in an article of a later date.) The second method is "full-blown" torture.

In this second method the turns the prisoners over to a third country that has no limits on torture for interrogation. The interrogation proceeds oftentimes with an American overseeing the torture. Some prisoners have been summarily executed after the interrogation. The procedure of turning the prisoner over to a third country for interrogation is known as 'rendition.'

On March 11, 2002 the Washington Post published an article entitled "US Behind Secret Transfer of Terror Suspects." The article quoted an U.S. diplomat saying, "After September 11, these sorts of movements have been occurring all the time. It allows us to get information from terrorists in a way we can't do on US soil." The article reports that "Since Sept. 11, the US government has secretly transported dozens of people suspected of links to terrorists to countries other than the United States, bypassing extradition procedures and legal formalities, according to Western diplomats and intelligence sources." The article continues "The suspects have been taken to countries, including Egypt and Jordan, whose intelligence services have close ties to the CIA and where they can be subjected to interrogation tactics-including torture and threats to families-that are illegal in the United States, the sources said. In some cases, US intelligence agents remain closely involved in the interrogation, the sources said."

Moreover, this is exactly the procedure US Immigration officials used in deporting Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen to Jordan and then on to Syria. The hapless Canadian was waiting for a connecting flight to Canada after returning from Switzerland when immigration officials seized him. He reported being beaten in Jordan and then taken to Syria where he endured ten months of torture.

The unconstitutional Patriot Act made it possible for immigration authorities to deport Mr Arar. Furthermore, the act makes it possible for the US to take similar actions against US citizens. In fact, the act forfeits many of our freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. If authorities claim that a citizen is a terrorist or engaged in terrorist actions then the person has no right to a lawyer, no right to bail, no protection against unreasonable searches and can be held indefinitely without charges being filed.

Bush has followed the same path Hitler took. The Nazis first passed euthanasia laws before murdering the feebleminded. They passed the Nuremberg laws before persecuting the Jews. The Patriot Act is America's Nuremberg law. It is only one example of many steps the Bush administration has taken to avoid criminal charges. Another example is the Bush administration insistence that those held in Camp X-ray and Abu Ghraib prison are enemy combatant and not prisoners of war. The stark reality of such labeling is nothing more than a mere play on words. US law has already established that these captives are prisoners of war by case law.

The case establishing the status of "civilian combatants," "terrorists" or whatever euphemism one wishes to use as prisoners of war comes from a case during the Civil War when a Confederate ship was seized. The sailors captured were taken to New York and were regarded, as today's equivalent of terrorists since the US did not recognize the Confederate States as a country. The founder of Sullivan and Cromwell successfully defended the prisoners fixing their status as prisoners of war and saved them from hanging.

There are many examples of the Bush administration's collusion to avoid war criminal charges. Perhaps, the best example comes the Congress's passage of the Serviceman Protection Act introduced in Congress by their cronies Tom Delay and Jesse Helms. The bill calls for an automatic invasion of the idyllic land of windmills and tulips. What raised the ire of the Bush administration against the stoic Dutch was simply Holland is home of The Hague and the World Court. While the bill pretends to protect US servicemen such as the privates charged with torture from a trial before the World Court, the bill is merely protection for administration officials. The World Court does not prosecute cases against military personnel when their country does. Thus those reservists charged with torture have nothing to fear from the World Court as long as the US brings them to trial which seems assured. The real protection from the bill extends to protecting cabinet level officials and the president and vice president.

Furthermore, the Bush administration has bullied other countries into withdrawing their support for the World Court by using foreign aid as a club.

This leaves us with what the proper course of action should be. The low ranking escape goats have already said the CIA and even a civilian contractor ordered them to soften up the prisoners. In fact, Taguba's report named the civilian contractor, Steven Stephanowicz, of CACI International. The report recommended the army fire and reprimand him. While the Nuremberg trials clearly established following orders is no defense for committing war crimes there is some validity to the claim at the lowest level of the command chain. Certainly they should be held accountable and sentenced accordingly.

However, the real war criminals lie at the top of command chain at the cabinet level and above. When the President, the Vice President and cabinet secretaries recommend committing war crimes it is an impeachable offense. Congress should be working posthaste in preparing the articles of impeachment against all of those involved including Bush and Cheney. Moreover, impeachment is not sufficient alone. They need to face serious charges of war crimes. The Allies made a serious mistake in Nuremberg in not hanging enough high-ranking Nazis. Let's not repeat the mistake.

Please check my site on a regular basis for the follow-up article on the links between the Bush family, their network of loyalist criminals, the intrigue of the Nazi war criminals imported after WW2 to staff the psychological warfare operations of the intelligence agencies, and the common racist eugenics theology that was funded by the Bush/Harriman enterprise. It is not without coincidence that this White House and its heavily influenced PNAC agenda are linked. This link is the genome specific bioweapons called for in policy papers published by the PNAC members. That is racial warfare and we all need to be well educated to the dark path these men have chosen.

NOTE: I went to check this book at - most amazing and disturbing! Here are some details on it...

The Nazi Hydra In America is a currently an ongoing work in progress of the White Rose. The Nazi Hydra was conceived to fill a gap in the literature by providing a detailed overview of the influence of fascism within the United States. The intent and motivation for such a project was twofold: to sound an ominous warning as to the direction this country is taking at the hands of the right wing and to provide a convenient all encompassing source on fascism in the Untied States for the reader. In this regards the chapters are heavily documented. When complete the book is projected to span sixteen chapters. Chapters will be made available on this web site as they are completed.

After over five years into this project I now understand why such a book was never attempted before. Such a detailed accounting of fascism with the Untied States would literally fill volumes. Since this is an overview many of the details had to be omitted. Hence, throughout thebook I urge the reader to read the sources for further details.

Beginning the project I naively thought I had a good understanding of the scope of problem and that I could complete the entire book in two years. Before a year had past I found that many of my assumptions were incorrect and the project would last much longer. In fact, nothing from the original outline remains unchanged. Even the title was changed to better describe the book. New chapters were added and old ones deleted. But then such changes are the hallmark of good research.

The real danger from fascism is that it is so insidious that it can creep into every aspect of our daily lives unnoticed, including religious groups. In fact many religious groups were founded by fascists in the 1930s and played a large role in propagating fascism throughout the country. For the reader looking for a quick definition of fascism the slippery slope to fascism begins when the government puts the interests of corporations ahead of the rights of the people and their interest. Remember only people have rights; paper institutions created by society have no rights; they only have an obligation to serve the public. When they fail at that they have lost the right to exist.

Some readers will undoubtedly find the Nazi Hydra disturbing. They shudder at reports of another Nazi war criminal being deported and the crimes against humanity that he inflicted onto others. They fear to ask the question how such a person could slip into the country or how many more are present. Others may be livid with anger as the Nazi Hydra details the associations of the Republican Party and past presidents: Nixon, Ford, Bush and Reagan with Nazi war criminals. But history cannot be rewritten and it's a story that must be told. Those that supported Hitler and the Nazis during the 1930s and 1940s are no less guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity than the Nazi war criminals and should have suffered the same fate at the end of the hangman’s rope at Nuremberg,

In tracing the roots of fascism from the 1920s to the present the one aspect that I find the most amazing is how small the click of hard core Nazis supporters is. The truth is fascism in America revolves around a handful of Wall Street firms and leading American families. One name above all others in steering the country towards full-blown fascism stands out above all others: Bush. For over seventy years and three generations the Bush family has been hard core supporters and advocates of fascism.

With the record of the current Bush regime a short excerpt from the first leaflet of the White Rose Society, a small group of students who dared to oppose Hitler and the Nazis bears repeating.

"Nothing is so unworthy of a civilized nation as allowing itself to be governed without opposition by an irresponsible clique that has yielded to base instinct. Who among us has any conception of the dimensions of shame that will befall us and our children when one day the veil has fallen from our eyes and the most horrible of crimes - crimes that infinitely out-distance every human measure - reach the light of day?"

Who will survive to bare witness this time?

Secret World of U.S. Interrogation

By Dana Priest and Joe Stephens

Washington Post

11 May 2004

Long History of Tactics in Overseas Prisons Is Coming to Light

In Afghanistan, the CIA's secret U.S. interrogation center in Kabul is known as "The Pit," named for its despairing conditions. In Iraq, the most important prisoners are kept in a huge hangar near the runway at Baghdad International Airport, say U.S. government officials, counterterrorism experts and others. In Qatar, U.S. forces have been ferrying some Iraqi prisoners to a remote jail on the gigantic U.S. air base in the desert.

The Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, where a unit of U.S. soldiers abused prisoners, is just the largest and suddenly most notorious in a worldwide constellation of detention centers -- many of them secret and all off-limits to public scrutiny -- that the U.S. military and CIA have operated in the name of counterterrorism or counterinsurgency operations since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

These prisons and jails are sometimes as small as shipping containers and as large as the sprawling Guantanamo Bay complex in Cuba. They are part of an elaborate CIA and military infrastructure whose purpose is to hold suspected terrorists or insurgents for interrogation and safekeeping while avoiding U.S. or international court systems, where proceedings and evidence against the accused would be aired in public. Some are even held by foreign governments at the informal request of the United States.

"The number of people who have been detained in the Arab world for the sake of America is much more than in Guantanamo Bay. Really, thousands," said Najeeb Nuaimi, a former justice minister of Qatar who is representing the families of dozens of prisoners.

The largely hidden array includes three systems that only rarely overlap: the Pentagon-run network of prisons, jails and holding facilities in Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo and elsewhere; small and secret CIA-run facilities where top al Qaeda and other figures are kept; and interrogation rooms of foreign intelligence services -- some with documented records of torture -- to which the U.S. government delivers or "renders" mid- or low-level terrorism suspects for questioning.

All told, more than 9,000 people are held by U.S. authorities overseas, according to Pentagon figures and estimates by intelligence experts, the vast majority under military control. The detainees have no conventional legal rights: no access to a lawyer; no chance for an impartial hearing; and, at least in the case of prisoners held in cellblock 1A at Abu Ghraib, no apparent guarantee of humane treatment accorded prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions or civilians in U.S. jails.

Although some of those held by the military in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo have had visits by the International Committee of the Red Cross, some of the CIA's detainees have, in effect, disappeared, according to interviews with former and current national security officials and to the Army's report of abuses at Abu Ghraib.

The CIA's "ghost detainees," as they were called by members of the 800th MP Brigade, were routinely held by the soldier-guards at Abu Ghraib "without accounting for them, knowing their identities, or even the reason for their detention," the report says. These phantom captives were "moved around within the facility to hide them" from Red Cross teams, a tactic that was "deceptive, contrary to Army doctrine, and in violation of international law."

CIA employees are under investigation by the Justice Department and the CIA inspector general's office in connection with the death of three captives in the past six months, two who died while under interrogation in Iraq, and a third who was being questioned by a CIA contract interrogator in Afghanistan. A CIA spokesman said the hiding of detainees was inappropriate. He declined to comment further.

None of the arrangements that permit U.S. personnel to kidnap, transport, interrogate and hold foreigners are ad hoc or unauthorized, including the so-called renditions. "People tend to regard it as an extra-judicial kidnapping; it's not," former CIA officer Peter Probst said. "There is a long history of this. It has been done for decades. It's absolutely legal."

In fact, every aspect of this new universe -- including maintenance of covert airlines to fly prisoners from place to place, interrogation rules and the legal justification for holding foreigners without due process afforded most U.S. citizens -- has been developed by military or CIA lawyers, vetted by Justice Department's office of legal counsel and, depending on the particular issue, approved by White House general counsel's office or the president himself.

Monsanto Abandons Plans for GM Wheat

With little fanfare, biotech-food giant Monsanto announced yesterday that it would abandon plans to introduce genetically modified wheat to the market. Anti-GM activists, who have fought Monsanto's plans for some five years, celebrated the announcement as a major victory. However, the impetus for the shift was likely not the moral and ecological concerns raised by enviros, but the financial concerns of farmers. Some 50 percent of U.S. wheat is exported, and Japanese and European wheat millers -- the biggest purchasers -- had made it very clear they would not buy GM wheat. This led U.S. and Canadian farmers, who have embraced other GM crops, to lobby against GM wheat. While the three core GM crops developed by Monsanto -- cotton, soy, and corn -- are used in clothes and pressed into oils that end up in processed foods, wheat has a more direct and symbolically loaded connection to culture and the food on our plates.

Energy Industry Cozy with Bush Administration, Says Report

Most of the dirtiest power plants in the country are owned by 30 companies that, along with their trade association, have collectively raised some $6.6 million for President Bush and the Republican National Committee since 1999, says a new report. The companies' intent, says Frank Clemente of Public Citizen, a consumer-advocacy group that coauthored the report, was to "help elect an industry-friendly president, fill federal regulatory posts with former utility executives and lobbyists, and hire a small army of lobbyists and lawyers connected to the new president to engineer regulatory changes." Their investment has paid off handsomely, says Eric Schaeffer of the Environmental Integrity Project, which cowrote the report: "It is no coincidence that a wholesale assault on the Clean Air Act is taking place today." An RNC spokesperson called the charges "partisan politics," pointing as evidence to the $450 that Public Citizen's president has donated to John Kerry.
