In 1990 while on a over night stay inside Temple of the Sun in Palenque, Mexico, the Star Elders told me something I didn't understand fully at the time. They said that the rules were going to change soon. That the way we relate to the world, the manifest universe, would change. They joked with me and said that a new game was coming, and we are not going to get the rule book. The game and how to play it, will be something we discover over time by observation. Here it is 13 years later, and I think I am just starting to understand what they were talking about. I think the rules are beginning to change. (...) I know things are changing in ways we cannot comprehend right now. I feel we are starting to see some shifts and changes in our lives that don't add up or make sense. But maybe they do! Maybe as the rules change for the manifested universe, our bodies, our minds, our spirit change along with it. CLIP

The Sword Of Damoclese
“This should be of profound concern to every U.S. citizen. The officers and program managers involved in developing the antimissile system have taken oaths to defend the nation. Yet they have concealed from the American people and Congress the fact that a weapon system paid for by hard-earned tax dollars to defend our country cannot work.” - Theodore Postol, professor of science, technology, and national security policy at MIT. (...) But as horrible as the aforementioned might be to contemplate, more horrible still, is the realization that what I’ve described is what could happen if the United States were so attacked AFTER it bought and finally deployed the costly and ultimately useless missile defense system Mr. Bush is proposing. What our president does not want you to know is this: as currently anticipated, the missile defense system he is endorsing and funding with your children's money, will greatly enrich his private defense contractor cronies (the usual suspects), but it will protect the United States and her people from nothing. Nothing. Nothing! CLIP

Diebold, Electronic Voting and the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy (Feb 25)
(...) A joint study by the California and Massachusetts Institutes of Technology following the 2000 election determined that between 1.5 and 2 million votes were not counted due to confusing paper ballots or faulty equipment. The federal government’s solution to the problem was to pass the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002. One of the law’s stated goals was “Replacement of punch card and lever voting machines.” The new voting machines would be high-tech touch screen computers, but if there’s no paper trail, how do you know if there’s been a computer glitch? How can the results be trusted? And how do you recount to see if the actual votes match the computer’s tally? Bev Harris, author of Black Box Voting: Ballot Tampering in the 21st Century, argues that without a paper trail, these machines are open to massive voter fraud. Diebold has already placed some 50,000 machines in 37 states and their track record is causing Harris, Johns Hopkins University professors and others great concern. Johns Hopkins researchers at the Information Security Institute issued a report declaring that Diebold’s electronic voting software contained “stunning flaws.” The researchers concluded that vote totals could be altered at the voting machines and by remote access. (...) As Blackwell pressures the Ohio legislature to adopt electronic voting machines without a paper trail, Athan Gibbs wonders, “Why would you buy a voting machine from a company like Diebold which provides a paper trail for every single machine it makes except its voting machines? And then, when you ask it to verify its numbers, it hides behind ‘trade secrets.’” Maybe the Diebold decision makes sense, if you believe, to paraphrase Henry Kissinger, that democracy is too important to leave up to the votes of the people.

Poisoned Skies
Talk about chemtrails and eyes roll as folks condescendingly refer to them as contrails. It's easy to distinguish the two from each other. Contrails are formed by warm jet-exhaust contacting a cool atmosphere. They are narrow trails that quickly dissipate. Chemtrails are usually lower in the atmosphere, wider in size and slowly cover the sky with a variety of lingering "cloud" effects. They create a milky-grey haze that obscures the mountains and the distant horizon. In dramatic form they drape in unusual U shape, pendulum array, or black spider webs and gray drippings. Outstanding photos of chemtrails across America are found on . Where are chemtrails coming from? The Department of Defense is spraying toxic material into the sky to create a plasma-membrane shield for reflecting high-frequency radio waves. This article looks at government documents and US Patents for aerosolized chemical releases. Poisoned skies are inconceivable as an ongoing reality. Therefore it is necessary to understand why the DOD is aerosolizing America. Otherwise it's difficult to accept chemtrails as more than just another conspiracy theory. Why? HAARP (High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program) and chemtrails come together to create and employ an artificial ionospheric mirror (AIM) to reflect radio-frequency signals to exact locations. HAARP pulses the signal and chemtrails create the mirror. The following series of quotes is meant to answer the why-questions. These documents contain details of the militarization of space. CLIP

Out of Gas (Aired: February 25)
The American economic machine, not to mention most of the rest of the world these days, runs on cheap oil and lots of it. The global economy can't live without it. But we may feel the end of the age of oil much sooner than most people expect, says one of America's top scientists. Physicist David Goodstein, Vice Provost at the California Institute of Technology, has recently joined the effort in trying to determine when and how the impact of diminishing global oil supplies might hit home. In Goodstein's estimation, "civilization as we know it will not survive, unless we can find a way to live without fossil fuels." Hear physicist David Goodstein talk about the alternatives to global oil shortages.

French environmentalists push for tougher ban on 'bee-killing' pesticide (Feb 27)
PARIS - French environmentalists and bee-keepers Friday demanded the government ban outright a pesticide whose sales were suspended this week because of suspicions it was killing off bees in huge numbers. The main farmers' union, led by anti-globalisation campaigner Jose Bove, led the charge against the product, marketed under several brand-names including Regent TS, one day after staging an occupation of a national food safety agency in Paris during which activists stole several confidential government documents relating to the matter. Bove and several of the activists were arrested and briefly detained for the demonstration, and police said Friday they were investigating the theft. Among the documents, which they made available to the media, there was an agriculture ministry report which deemed that the government's decision to give farmers till June to use up their remaining stocks of the pesticide was much less costly that destroying the crop seeds already sprayed. But the national association of bee-keepers says massive damage is being done to bee populations, which are crucial to plant pollination. The association and Bove's union are calling for a total and immediate ban on the use of the main molecule involved -- fipronil. Subisidiaries of German groups Bayer and BASF, which sold Regent TS, are under criminal investigation in France for selling an agricultural product that is toxic to humans or animals. Bayer's unit is also under investigation for destroying private property -- an accusation related to the death of the bees.

Caterpillar or Butterfly, Which Do You Choose?

By Anodea Judith

The present moment is a cauldron of staggering potential and awesome responsibility. Never before have American citizens had such ability to influence the political climate, nor has there ever been such absolute necessity for us to do so.

We are, quite simply, facing the ultimatum of traditional rites of passage: transform or die. Which do we choose?

Collectively, we are undergoing a profound transformation, a change from an adolescent "use-it-all-now" attitude to one of sustainable maturity that can parent a global future. In this transformation, we are like the caterpillar, entering the chrysalis to become a butterfly.

Prior to this transformation, a caterpillar eats voraciously, consuming all it can. Then it outgrows its skin, repeatedly, getting more and more bloated, slows down, and loses all freedom as it enters the confines of the chrysalis. The military-industrial-corporate-media complex, designed for consumption, the bloated Pentagon budget, and the Homeland Security Act that is curbing our freedom draw obvious parallels. The majority of cells in this country are still in the caterpillar stage, unknowing of what they might become.

Yet, inside the chrysalis, a miraculous thing occurs. Tiny cells begin to appear, called "imaginal cells," wholly different from the caterpillar cells, vibrating at a different frequency -- so different, in fact, that the caterpillar’s immune system vigorously attacks them. The media is the immune system of the old network, keeping the old memes alive, even as they lead us into stagnation and possible death. They continue to attack anyone that has a new way, such as Dennis Kucinich. Still, these new cells continue to appear, carrying the blueprint of the future organism.

As these cells become more numerous, they find each other, clump together, and form new networks and clusters that organize and differentiate into varied tasks. At a certain point in this proliferation, the new cells recognize each other as a wholly different organism and become so strong and numerous that the organism changes identity and reroutes its immune system. The caterpillar body then becomes the nutrient for the emerging butterfly.

Dennis Kucinich is an imaginal cell, dancing to the beat of a different drummer, a shaper of the future, not the past. He alone has demonstrated the wisdom of redirecting the Defense Department’s overactive immune system into a Department of Peace. He alone courageously addresses the overconsumption of corporatism and speaks of redirecting those resources into a system that works for the many, not the few. He alone sees the role of global leadership that America can play in the quest for world peace and justice. Dennis Kucinich is the one candidate who possesses the spiritual maturity to lead our larva-like culture into its glorious emergence.

But he can’t do it alone. We are the cells within this collective body. We can decide where to place our alignment -- with the dying caterpillar, choking on its own consumption, or the imaginal cells of the future. We can organize behind a vision for the future and we can support the mouthpiece of this organism who dares to speak for our dreams. We can get out the vote, and vote for Dennis Kucinich as a statement of who we are and who we are inevitably becoming.

As imaginal cells, we can use our power of imagination along with our donations and our sweat equity. We can visualize -- as a daily meditation -- a surge of support so profound the media cannot ignore it. We can use our own minds and mouths and keyboards to spread the word. We can align ourselves with progressive values of peace, sustainability, equality, and restoration. We not only can but we must if we are to survive the transformation.

Odd Man In - Dennis Kucinich is nobody’s fool.
(...) I will never forgive America for what Dennis Kucinich went through this year. Because he has had the audacity to call for an end to all wars, to announce plans for the creation of a Department of Peace, to question the very culture of viciousness and intolerance and crass commercialism that rules our public discourse, he has been labeled a lunatic by nearly every "responsible" press organ in this country and cruelly mocked to a degree that no civil society should allow an honorable man to endure. The New Yorker, that revolting beacon of glib, self-satisfied affluence, runs a cartoon showing Kucinich sweeping to victory in a primary held on Mars. The New York Times first angrily demands that he not waste any more of our time, then actually physically disposes of him after the passing of some self-imposed fictional electoral deadline. Even the more genuinely funny and more intelligent people in American public life -- I’m thinking particularly of Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon -- can’t resist savaging Kucinich whenever they get a chance. All because he's "funny-looking," and because he uses the word peace without kidding. I am a Dennis Kucinich supporter because I believe America’s greatest problem is its incivility, its intolerance to new ideas, its remorseless hatred of weakness and failure, the willingness of its individual citizens to submerge their individual cowardice within the vicious commerce-driven standards of our national self-image. George Bush is a terrible president, but he is merely a by-product of these wider national tendencies, which exist outside of him and independently of him. And these tendencies are symbolized exactly in the laughter directed at Dennis Kucinich. To vote for Dennis Kucinich, I believe, is to vote for man’s right to publicly be who he is and not be ridiculed for it. If we are peaceful people, it is a vote for our right to merely be who we are. This is not a small thing, because we are in danger of losing that right in this country. If you are the wrong kind of person, even the New York Times would have you disappear from the stage entirely. That is why it is important to understand this vote not as a pragmatic choice for a winner, but as a passionate act of self-preservation. We must stand with the man who is taking all the abuse that most of us are too afraid to take in our own lives. CLIP

Subject: Oppose Bush's Coup in Haiti

The A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism) Coalition condemns the U.S.-led coup carried out today against the elected president of Haiti, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, as well as the U.S. occupation of that country. U.S. marines have entered Haiti tonight (February 29).

Whether President Aristide was actually kidnapped by U.S. forces, as some sources have reported, or was just presented with 'an offer he couldn't refuse,' there is no question that Washington played the decisive role in this regime change. The coup in Haiti is reminiscent of similar deadly CIA operations in Iran, Guatemala, the Congo, Chile and numerous other countries in the last half-century.

The removal of President Aristide follows more than a century of U.S. intervention in Haiti, and years of destabilization designed to bring about the destruction of the Aristide government. This negation of Haiti's democracy and sovereignty by the U.S. comes as the country is marking its 200th anniversary of independence which followed the heroic revolt against slavery and the creation of the first free Black republic in the Western Hemisphere.

Since the election of Aristide to a second term in late 2000 with 92% of the vote, Washington has maintained economic sanctions against the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Sanctions have had the intended effect of wearing down the people and popular support for the Aristide government by denying food, medicine and other necessities of life to the population. Haiti's poverty today is a direct result of centuries of slavery and exploitation for the benefit of corporate interests in France and the U.S.

In addition, the U.S. has extended financial and political support to the so-called "Democratic Convergence," the right-wing opposition. According to a story in today's Miami Herald, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said today that the U.S. "facilitated" Aristide's departure. Ira Kurzban, an Aristide spokesman in Miami, said he believed "U.S. intelligence agencies were involved in the ouster. ... This was a major operation by the intelligence agencies of the U.S."

Congressperson Charles Rangel, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, said that the U.S. government is "just as much as part of this coup d'etat as the rebels, looters or anyone else." (ABC's "This Week," Feb. 29, 2004)

According to Reuters, U.S. civil rights leader Jesse Jackson called Aristide's resignation an "American-assisted coup," and U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, a California Democrat, demanded to know where the Haitian leader was being taken one day after he told her "he would rather die than leave." "When I last talked to him (Aristide) yesterday, he was not going to leave. He said he would rather die than leave. And then I wake up this morning and I find out that my government has landed at his home with Marines. How did they get him to leave? What did they do? And where is he?" Waters said in an interview with CNN.

The Bush Administration has arrogantly and illegally embarked on a policy of "regime change" in Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti and elsewhere. On March 20, the first anniversary of the start of the unprovoked war of aggression against Iraq, people around the world will take to the streets in massive numbers. We will demand: Bring the Troops Home Now and End Occupation from Iraq to Palestine and Everywhere. We will also be marching to oppose the criminal role of the Bush administration in ousting the first democratically elected government in Haiti's history.

Haiti's Lawyer: U.S. is Arming Anti-Aristide Paramilitaries, Calls For UN Peacekeepers (25 February 2004)
The US lawyer representing the government of Haiti charged today that the US government is directly involved in a military coup attempt against the country's democratically elected President, Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Ira Kurzban, the Miami-based attorney who has served as General Counsel to the Haitian government since 1991, said that the paramilitaries fighting to overthrow Aristide are being backed by Washington. "I believe that this is a group that is armed by, trained by, and employed by the intelligence services of the United States," Kurzban told the national radio and TV program Democracy Now!. "This is clearly a military operation, and it's a military coup." "There's enough indications from our point of view, at least from my point of view, that the United States certainly knew what was coming about two weeks before this military operation started," Kurzban said. "The United States made contingency plans for Guantanamo." If a direct US connection is proven, it will mark the second time in just over a decade that Washington has been involved in a coup in Haiti.

This article was written in the last days of February 2004 in response to the barrage of disinformation in the mainstream media. It was completed on February 29th, the day of President Jean Bertrand Aristide's departure in exile. - The armed insurrection which contributed to unseating President Aristide on February 29th 2004 was the result of a carefully staged military-intelligence operation. The Rebel paramilitary army crossed the border from the Dominican Republic in early February. It constitutes a well armed, trained and equipped paramilitary unit integrated by former members of Le Front pour l'avancement et le progrès d'Haiti (FRAPH), the "plain clothes" death squadrons, involved in mass killings of civilians and political assassinations during the CIA sponsored 1991 military coup, which led to the overthrow of the democratically elected government of President Jean Bertrand Aristide. (...) In other words, Washington's design is "regime change": topple the Lavalas administration and install a compliant US puppet regime, integrated by the Democratic Platform and the self-proclaimed Front pour la libération et la reconstruction nationale (FLRN), whose leaders are former FRAPH and Tonton Macoute terrorists. The latter are slated to integrate a "national unity government" alongside the leaders of the Democratic Convergence and The Group of 184 Civil Society Organizations led by Andy Apaid. More specifically, the FLRN led by Guy Philippe is slated to rebuild the Haitian Armed forces, which were disbanded in 1995. In other words, what is at stake is an eventual power sharing arrangement between the various Opposition groups and the CIA supported Rebels, which have links to the cocaine transit trade from Colombia to Florida. The protection of this trade has a bearing on the formation of a new narco-government, which will serve US interests. A bogus (symbolic) disarmament of the Rebels may be contemplated under international supervision, as occurred with the KLA in Kosovo in 2000. The "former terrorists" could then be integrated into the civilian police as well as rebuilding under US supervision the Haitian Armed forces. What this scenario suggests, is that the Duvalier-era terrorist structures have been restored. A program of civilian killings and political assassinations directed against Lavalas supporter is in fact already underway. In other words, if Washington were really motivated by humanitarian considerations, why then is it supporting and financing the FRAPH death squadrons? Its objective is not to prevent the massacre of civilians. Modeled on previous CIA led operations (e.g. Guatemala, Indonesia, El Salvador), the FLRN death squadrons have been set loose and are involved in targeted political assassinations of Aristide supporters. THE NARCOTICS TRANSSHIPMENT TRADE While the real economy had been driven into bankruptcy under the brunt of the IMF reforms, the narcotics transshipment trade continues to flourish. According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Haiti remains "the major drug trans-shipment country for the entire Caribbean region, funneling huge shipments of cocaine from Colombia to the United States." (See US House of Representatives, Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources Subcommittee, FDHC Transcripts, 12 April 2000). It is estimated that Haiti is now responsible for 14 percent of all the cocaine entering the United States, representing billions of dollars of revenue for organized crime and US financial institutions, which launder vast amounts of dirty money. The global trade in narcotics is estimated to be of the order of 500 billion dollars. CLIP

The Israeli Crisis: America's Albatross

"Ah! Well a day! What evil looks
Had I from old and young!
Instead of the cross, the Albatross
About my neck was hung."

(Samuel Taylor Coleridge, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner)

Two issues dominate the electoral debate as Kerry battles Edwards and Bush, abandoning the crisis in Israel, enters the fray: homeland security and job loss caused by exporting jobs "offshore." One issue that encompasses both cannot be mentioned by political commentators and politicians for fear of condemnation as anti-Semitic and for fear, among politicians, of loss of their positions: what role does America's support of Israel play relative to homeland security and job loss? Is it the Albatross around America's neck?

Before undertaking this discussion, I need to make this assertion in self-defense: the violence that corrodes the mind and heart of fanatics in Palestine and Israel nourishes seeds of vengeance in children and adults alike, breeding only destruction and death; vengeance, retaliation, and terrorism -- caused by purported freedom fighters or by the state -- cannot and must not be tolerated in a world that claims to be civilized. I do not condone suicide bombing any more than I condone the firing of missiles into crowded streets. I do condemn my country's blind support of the government of Ariel Sharon, the principal cause of insecurity in America and the greatest threat to peace in the world today.

"Israel, world's biggest threat to world peace!" blared the headlines in Europe when the "Eurobarometer" poll, undertaken by the European Commission, reported more than 59% of EU citizens see Israel as a threat to world peace (Brussels: AFP-Reuter-Agencies, Nov. 2003). The United States, in the company of Iran and North Korea, came in second at 53%. Fifteen countries participated in the poll. Israel voiced outrage at the poll results claiming it reflected media bias against Israel. This despite the fact that a terrorist attack against Israeli citizens outpaces Israeli attacks against Palestinians 20 to 1 in media coverage. This poll follows the Pew Research Center survey of December 2002 that reflected growing discontent with America around the world. Criticism of America is on the rise as 19 of 27 countries disapprove of the actions taken by the Bush administration, actions that reflect an increased movement away from inter-nation engagement to a position of isolationism and unilateralism. "True dislike, if not hatred, of America is concentrated in the Muslim nations of the Middle East and in Central Asia, today's areas of greatest conflict." Less vociferous are America's traditional allies, but they too critique harshly "American-style democracy and business practices."

"Huge majorities (64%, 71%, and 79% respectively) in France, Germany and Russia oppose(d) the use of military force to end the rule of Saddam Hussein." The reason? The war with Iraq will increase the risk of terrorism in Europe, and while Americans seem to believe that terrorism has diminished as a result of the invasion of Iraq, the reality is that we are fast approaching a death rate of American soldiers in Iraq comparable to one-third the number killed in the 9/11 attacks. Are we willing to say that it's OK for Americans to die in the Middle-East as long as they are not being killed on American soil? Similar attitudes about America exist in Indonesia, Senegal, Western Europe, Australia and Canada. In short, Israel and America are perceived by the vast majority of people around the world as true threats to world peace. What does the world know that we are unwilling to face? In this election year, America's absolute and unswerving support for Israel and its unquestioned spread of corporate-style democracy (read Globalized Capitalism) remains the unseen elephant in the Oval Office and the campaign rooms of Kerry and Edwards.

Interestingly, John Kerry's Presidential web site mocks Howard Dean for a string of "misstatements" about Israel and America's unstinting support of that state. What constitutes a "Misstatement"? Disagreement with Kerry's statement that "Every candidate who aspires to be president should know that Israel is a democracy and our closest ally in the region." What did Dean say? Israel is "a Jewish state, it's not a democracy." He's right! Israel is NOT a democracy: it has no constitution after fifty years of existence, yet we demand that Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine have a constitution; its system of laws is determined by the Torah, a religious document not a secular one; it denies recognition of the Palestinian minority despite UN Resolution 181 calling for such recognition; it defies UN Resolutions requiring it to accept return of the indigenous Palestinians from the refugee camps to their rightful homes taken from them in 1948 or 1967 but allows Jews from Russia and other lands to immigrate and become citizens solely because of their religion, making Israel a de facto theocracy (similar, ironically, to an Islamic democracy!); and it keeps on the books more than 20 laws that discriminate against the Palestinian minority (Adalah: Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel).

John Edwards parrots the same line as Kerry: "John Edwards believes that Israel is one of America's vital allies, and that the US must support Israel to help it fight terror and achieve peace." Such blind support for a state that, in the eyes of the vast majority of the world communities, is seen as instigating terror by its overwhelming military power (the fourth largest military in the world protecting a nation the size of New Jersey and with a smaller population) against an impoverished people that has no meaningful military force to speak of, only desperate people deprived of human dignity and hope, runs counter to reason, to say nothing of human rights.

Ridiculing Dean became a cause celebre that all had to join because he refused to lockstep behind the blind leading the blind into the ditch. "He was not ready for the presidency" because he had not joined the chorus directed by AIPAC; an "even handed" approach to the crisis in Israel/Palestine meant criticism of Israel that cannot be tolerated. The Israeli political forces launched a massive attack against Dean, as vicious as any mounted against Arafat, and he folded. Such is the power that controls America's democracy.

That leaves Kucinich; but nobody pays attention to Kucinich because he, too, contradicts the Neo-Con line that dictates America's allegiance to Israel. Kucinich would not cave to the powers that forced House Resolution 392, expressing solidarity with Israel, into being, a resolution that blared to the disenfranchised world America's bias against the Palestinian people even as it solidified in the minds of the terrorists (our term, they see themselves as freedom fighters) America's desire to control the Mid-East through its 51st state, Israel. Kucinich declared that "... we are missing an opportunity to lead people of the Middle East toward a secure and stable future together... The same humanity that requires us to acknowledge with profound concerns the pain and suffering of the people of Israel requires a similar expression for the pain and suffering of the Palestinians." How simple and how compassionate! Here is recognition that the suffering of both peoples must be our concern, not a wimpish subservience to a powerful elite that controls the current administration and our Congress.

The accepted dogma in the US states that America must support Israel to ensure peace in the Mid-East and to secure America against "terrorism" since Israel, like America, battles and fights the same "terrorists." But how substantive is this argument? If all the states that surround Israel, including the citizens of our puppet states Egypt and Jordan, and fifteen countries in the European Union observe Israel stealing land from the indigenous population of Palestine by defying UNSC resolutions that demand it return land taken in 1948 and 1967, if they see Israel placing illegal settlements in Palestinian territory eating up another 2% of Palestinian land and blatantly defying other UN resolutions, if they see America hypocritically demand that the UN invade Iraq for defying its resolutions while remaining silent about Israel's defiance, if they witness Israel incarcerate the indigenous population behind barbed wire and cement walls, even as they steal more land and isolate the people from relatives, mosques, work, and land, a device resurrected from Medieval days when states walled in the Jews in ghettoes, if they watch helplessly the willful invasion of Palestinian territory by tanks, armored vehicles, thousands of soldiers, and bulldozers that decimate homes, how can we believe that our support of Israel brings peace when it is so obvious that it is the reason there is no peace?

Bush prides himself on deposing "madmen," "ruthless dictators," "murderers," and "criminals" who kill wantonly, women, children, the old and infirm. In August of 1953, a poverty plagued refugee camp suffered an onslaught, supervised by a military commander that resulted in the deaths of 50 civilians as "bombs were thrown through the windows of huts in which the refugees were sleeping." Another village, Qibya, endured a massacre when that same commander reduced the village to rubble killing 69 civilians, two-thirds of them women and children, then buried the victims under their homes as they were blown up over them. In Gaza strip, after the 1967 war, Had'd Street, a narrow alley in a mass of similar alleys that made up a shantytown for refugees, was eradicated and hundreds of homes destroyed by bulldozers to enable tanks and armored vehicles to move unhindered through the camp, while this same commander allowed his soldiers to beat the people leaving them homeless once again. That same commander later destroyed an additional 2,000 homes uprooting 16,000 people and assassinated 104 suspected guerrillas without benefit of trial or jury. In 1982 this same commander directed the bombing of civilian populations and oversaw the massacres of 1,962 people at Sabra and Shatilla refugee camps, all infants, children, women, pregnant women, and the elderly, many mutilated (The Crimes of Ariel Sharon, Counterpunch 2/7/04). Was this Saddam? Was he the "little madman" in North Korea? No, quite obviously, he is Bush's mentor in Israel, a "man of peace" according to "W," Ariel Sharon.

Prior to the ascendancy of Ariel Sharon to head the government of Israel, prospects for a peaceful settlement existed. Sharon cripples any and all peace efforts and he does so with the complicity of the US administration and our government. He knowingly caused the current intifada by taking a 1000 IDF entourage to the holy Al Aqsa Mosque understanding his act as a defilement, and America said nothing, but the world looked on and the world objected. He alone of all Israeli leaders has used the full force of the Israeli military machine to subdue a defenseless people who fight against all odds to retain even a sliver of the land they owned before the state of Israel was forced upon them, a military machine bought and paid for by our tax dollars, and the world looks on and the world objects. He instigated the creation of settlements in Palestinian territory creating in the process groups of "terrorists" who plague Palestinians on their own land under the protection of the IDF, settlements paid for by our tax dollars, and the world looks on and the world objects. He prevented the introduction of UN Peace keepers as a means to resolve the crisis, and the world observes and objects. He instituted the pernicious practice of "extra judicial executions" that abandons the most rudimentary principles of Western justice, and America adopts that same pernicious practice in Iraq and Yemen, and the world looks on and the world objects. He cries to the world that he must defend Israelis against "terrorists" by any means even as he crushes 30 to 40 Palestinian homes per month under the relentless treads of America's paid for caterpillars, arrests and detains young Palestinians without charge, allows torture of some, accepts in silence the murder of international peace observers, and America says nothing to this man Bush calls a "man of peace," and the world looks on and the world objects.

But the Arab world sees more than just Sharon and his savage legacy; they see what Benny Morris, author of Righteous Victims: a History of the Zionist-Arab Conflict 1881-2001, has revealed recently that confirms a planned genocide against Palestinians by Ben Gurian and Moshe Carmel as far back as 1948. The massacre at the Dahmash Mosque (July 11, 1948) that resulted in the deaths of 350 worshippers by the 89th Israel Commando Battalion commanded by Moshe Dayan exemplifies the nature of the genocide and the savagery of its execution as Dayan's forces stripped the dead of their valuables and tossed the bodies out of the Mosque into the boiling sun (Gains, UK). While the West bought the lies of the Israeli historians and the media covered up the reality of "transference," what we now euphemistically call "ethnic cleansing," and what properly should be called massacre and theft, the release of Ben Gurian's orders tells the truth and confirms what the Arab world has said all along. That alone gives reason for the world to see Israel as the cause of instability in the Mid-East since it gives legitimacy to the cause of the Palestinians to resist Israeli occupation and insist on return of the refugees. Morris reveals, "In the months of April-May 1948, units of Haganah (precursor of IDF) were given operational orders that stated explicitly that they were to uproot the villagers, expel them and destroy the villages themselves" (Ari Shavit, Ha'aretz, Sun. 2/15/04). When asked how many acts of massacre occurred, Morris replied, 24, in Dawayima, Saliha, Deir Yassin, and Abu Shusha, "Ben Gurian silenced the matter. He covered up for the officers who did the massacres." Should not these revelations force a reconsideration of America's one-sided support of Israel? Doesn't Dean's observation that a more "even-handed" approach seems justified and Kerry and Edwards' blind adherence to an unanalyzed policy to a purported "democratic" Israel and a "peaceful" Israel need reconsideration?

Now let's take a more selfish look at the consequences this parasitic allegiance to Israeli interests causes the American taxpayer. The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs summarizes the amount of US tax dollars going to Israel: $134, 791, 507, 200 from 1949 to 1997. Tom Malthaner writes in "U.S. Aid to Israel: What U.S. Taxpayers Should Know" (WRMER 2/16/04), "When grants, loans, interest and tax deductions are added together for the fiscal year ending in September 30, 1997, our special relationship with Israel cost U.S. taxpayers over $10 billion." Using that figure, we can increase US aid to Israel by 10 billion from 1997 to 2004 or something close to 200 billion in taxpayer support. Would you believe that this is the conservative figure? David Francis of the Christian Science Monitor notes that "Since 1973, Israel has cost the United States about $1.6 trillion. If divided by today's population, that is more than $5,700 per person." (CSM, 12/9/02). This, he points out, is an estimate by Thomas Stauffer, a consulting economist in Washington, who notes that this represents more than twice the cost of the Vietnam War!

Considering that Israel is the 16th wealthiest nation in the world with a per capita income just below that of Britain and France, one has to ask why the American taxpayer spends one-third of its foreign aid budget on Israel, a country with a population only two-thirds the size of New Jersey representing 1/1000 of the world's population; a giveaway comparable to Bush's tax relief program for the well-healed! For every dollar we spent on an African since 1948 (a continent that desperately needs foreign aid), we have donated to each and every Israeli standing on the street corner, cup in hand, $250.65! (Adhaf Soueif, 11/03). To put it another way, "The per capita U.S. foreign aid to Israel's 5.8 million people (that doesn't include the 20% Arab population living in the Israeli State) during the same period was $10,775.48." (Richard Curtiss, "The Cost of Israel to U.S. Taxpayers"). Turn that into dollars per American taxpayer: the cost to each taxpayer up to 1997 amounts to $23,240 per Israeli. A quarter of Israel's income comes from the taxpayer in America. Perhaps they need it since they have a higher life expectancy than that of the U.S.! But what if 10 billion were distributed to individual states? California could use 10 billion and it has more than 34 million people not a paltry 5.8 and its land area far exceeds that of Israel. Now there's bang for the buck! But Alan Cranston in 1984 created an amendment to the U.S. Foreign Aid bill that compels the U.S. government to provide Israel enough Economic Support Funds to meet its debt burden to the United States, an act of generosity not offered to California, the state he represented! And what have we gotten for our investment?

Putting aside the origins of the state of Israel that by itself could account for a major portion of the hatred of the United States in the Arab world, Israel has given the US taxpayer the following return on his/her investment:

(1) an absolute unwillingness to return land stolen from the Palestinians during the 1967 war despite UNSC resolutions demanding that return, leaving the indigenous population with about 14% of the land they originally inhabited before 1948, a time when the Palestinians owned all but 6% of the land in Palestine and constituted 69% of the population, the Jewish population in 1948 being only 806,000, a defiance guaranteed to bring hatred not peace;

(2) an absolute defiance of more than a hundred UN resolutions demanding that Israel abide by international law and the Human Rights guarantees of the Geneva Accords, a defiance guaranteed to bring disdain not peace;

(3) a sadistic disregard for American friendship and loyalty by its insidious use of spies against America as the Jonathan Pollard case readily demonstrates and David Tenenbaum before him, actions guaranteed to undermine the taxpayers loyalty to Israel if this democracy had an uncensored press;

(4) an absolute defiance of expected behavior between allies by executing an act of war against America in its attack on the U.S. Liberty in 1967, a crime covered up by the Johnson administration as it acquiesced to Jewish interests, a crime that almost forced the US into another war on behalf of Israel, a crime that cost the American taxpayer untold amounts of dollars even as it demonstrated to the world the extent the Israeli government would go to protect its own interests;

(5) a sadistic strategy of infiltration into US government affairs through the Neo-Con Cabal that worked on behalf of Israeli interests as laid out in their advisory report to the Israeli government, "Securing the Realm," that brought America to war against Iraq based on lies generated by these men, an act guaranteed to bring hatred not peace to the Mid-East;

(6) an open defiance of the American government's desires regarding the invasion of the Jenin refugee camp, the bulldozing of thousands of Palestinian homes, the murder of international peace observers, and the construction of the Israeli Wall, all defiance's that disregard American interests and guarantee hatred of America not peace;

(7) an insidious desire to encourage Evangelical Zionist Christians to invest millions in Settlements that cause terrorism in Palestinian territory while inciting hatred of Arabs by encouraging their fanatical beliefs in the "Clash of Cultures" that will come with the fulfillment of the prophecies of Revelation, actions guaranteed to rouse deeper suspicion and hatred not peace;

(8) a defiance of the Arms Export Control Act that provides US military hardware to Israel on condition it be used only for defensive purposes by using US made cluster bombs in 1982 against civilian targets in Lebanon, an action guaranteed to cause hatred not peace;

(9) finally, and this brings us back to the second issue that dominates this year's election debate, a maneuvering of the agreements that provide Israel with taxpayers' dollars, an arrangement that allows Israel to purchase military equipment from Israeli manufacturers even though they are available here in the US and an arrangement that requires that the US purchase with Department of Defense funds military hardware from Israel, an action that in effect ships American jobs to Israel, jobs paid for by the taxpayer! Talk about robbing Peter to pay Paul. And we haven't mentioned here the sale by Israel of US classified technology to Ethiopia, South Africa, Chile, Venezuela and China contrary to the agreements made between the US and Israel (Shawn Twing, Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, 4/96).

Why does this administration pretend that it is in the best interests of this country to continue to spend an estimated 10 billion a year on a relatively wealthy people that is protected by the fourth largest military in the world, one that possesses nuclear weaponry as well as chemical and biological, for a population that is slightly larger than the population of the city of Los Angeles? Wouldn't it be more effective to force that state to make peace with its neighbors by returning to the ideals that gave rise to its existence in the first place, not the driven purpose of the Zionists, but the compassionate values of Europe and America when it sought to establish a homeland for Jews who had suffered for centuries the racism that eventually resulted in the holocaust of WWII? How can peace be brought to the Mid-East unless Europe and America recognize that they bear responsibility for imposing a population on an existing indigenous people, without their consent, who were innocent of the evil done to the Jews in Europe? How can peace arise when Palestinians look back at the forcible eviction of 737,166 of their people in 1948 and, in 1967, an additional 69,000 from the West Bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights, a population that has grown to over a million people now living in refugee camps and denied both compensation for their stolen homes and right of return that flaunts international law? Rights denied are sores that infest the soul only to explode in vengeance and retaliation.

But do we have a return to the compassion that the world offered to the Jews? Do we address the consequences of the actions that have given rise to the unrelenting horror of oppression, occupation, and insane reaction that uses humans as bombs? No! We have the erecting of an American taxpayer Wall, an Israeli constructed "Wall of Fear" that creates an Israeli Pogrom to encircle the most deprived in the world, the mirror image of the suffering of the Jews at Terezin, and the world sees fear on both sides -- fear of imprisonment and deprivation and fear of retaliation for wrongs inflicted. I empathize with Shlomo Shmelzman when he cries, "I see bombs falling on a city, on innocent civilians -- men, women, children and babies. Houses crumbling, dead bodies in the streets. I remember a morning in September 1939, when my mother and I were running to my grandmother's home, through the fire and smoke under a heavy bombardment, finding our way between dead bodies lying in the streets of Warsaw. Too many things in Israel remind me of too many other things from my childhood. Today, as a citizen of Israel, I cannot accept the systematic destruction of cities, towns, and refugee camps. I cannot accept the technocratic cruelty of the bombing, destroying and killing of human beings."

Coleridge's Ancient Mariner carried the Albatross until "A spring of love gushed from my heart/ And I blessed them unaware/The self same moment I could pray/ And from my neck so free/ The Albatross fell off, and sank? Like lead into the sea." And so must America bring peace by forging an alliance with the Jews for Peace and their counterparts in Palestine; when love and fairness guides our policy toward both peoples, when love and fairness rise in our hearts "unawares," then will peace come to the Mid-East and America's Albatross sink like lead into the sea. "He prayeth best who loveth best/ All things both great and small./ For the dear God who loveth us/ He made and loveth all."

Bank Robbers: Israel raided three banks in the West Bank city of Ramallah this week and seized at least $6.7 million (February 27)
JERUSALEM AND RAMALLAH - Israel sees it as an audacious and definitive blow to the financial base of terrorism. But Palestinians view the army's unprecedented raid on Ramallah banks as a targeting of their economy as a whole. The fallout from the raids, which ended at 2 a.m. Thursday, was being gauged by the Palestinian financial sector. Bankers were hoping the army's seizure of 30 million shekels ($6.7 million) in assets would not touch off a run of withdrawals from customers fearing for the safety of their money. "Now no institution is safe," said Omar Abdel-Razeq, senior research fellow at the Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute. Its offices near the raided Cairo Amman Bank were converted into a military post during the raids. Israeli troops also raided the Palestine International Bank and the Arab Bank, forcing employees to operate computer systems and hand over money from the vaults, employees said.

Subject: Corporate Media Ain't going to get it done!
From: Phyllis>

O.K. Folks I know how you feel about the media. I too, look every time to see if Dennis' message will finally get out to the masses. I too, think this time the people will see what we have seen. I think surly this time they can't ignore his vision of peace and sustainability. Then I come to my senses.

We need to focus on the task at hand. How do we take the country back from the major corporations before they have depleted all of the Earth's resources and polluted the environment?

It WON'T happen using the tools of the corporate rulers. Let me repeat. It WON'T happen using the tools of the corporate rulers. It WON'T happen using the tools of the corporate rulers. I've been traveling around the First District of California and talking with people. They get it. Get up from your TV's and go next door. Go to the park. Talk to your neighbors. They see the bias. They just don't know you are there. We can't count on any large corporate entity. By their very definition, they can't help us. Their mandate is to return the largest profit to their shareholders. We need to use our own tools. That's how it has to happen. Tell your neighbors. Every time I catch myself thinking we will get a fair shake from the corporations, I realize how strong the brainwashing has been. Don't wait for it to change. IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

You've been thinking the people are ready; they only need to hear Dennis speak. Your right, they are ready. We ARE Dennis "We ARE the ones we have been waiting for". Get off your butts and hit the streets. Carry your message, carry a sign, let your friend's and neighbors know, we need to have a large consensus on the convention floor. Let them know you get it too, let them know together we can take it back. Ask them to turn off the propaganda machine. Suggest Pacifica Radio or they know what you‚re talking about. Let's do it this time around. We've done this so far with no help from the media and no money. THAT'S HOW WE HAVE TO DO IT.

Think of new or old ways to communicate. I tell you one on one, heart to heart, everyone understands. Don't spend too much time with each person. If they don't believe in evolution, move on. Talk about nurturing, education, teaching and future generations.

Quit waiting for someone else to get it done. Don't let the media hold you down. Remember they want you to feel helpless. They want you to rely on them. DON'T DO IT. I want to see the 17,000 volunteers on the street today.

Got to go I'm traveling a few hundred miles today, spreading the word.

Repentant arms dealer reveals disgruntled
U.S. military on the verge of revolt

By John Kaminski

Back in May 2003, a journalist in Portugal reported on a sensational, marathon meeting of a group of U.S. pilots that issued a report concluding that the story told by the U.S. government about what happened on Sept. 11, 2001 was improbable and unlikely.

Except for several notices on the Internet, that story was basically never reported in the U.S., and largely debunked when the reporter flubbed the name of the organizer, creating disbelief in the minds of many readers.

The record was corrected in stunning fashion Feb. 25 on Alex Jones’ Prison Planet radio program when former Pentagon arms salesman Donn de Grand-Pre, author of three books that allege 9/11 was an inside job, set the record straight, because he was the man who organized that conference. That 72-hour non-stop symposium by a group of military and civilian pilots concluded the flight crews of the four passenger airliners involved in the 9/11 tragedy had no control over their aircraft.

de Grand Pre, a retired Army colonel, is the author of “A Window on America,” “Confessions of an Arms Peddler” and his latest, “Barbarians Inside the Gates.” His thesis in the third book “is that the wars we have engaged in for whatever reasons since the end of World War II have not only been unconstitutionally waged, but have caused a net loss in political power. Each war was waged to divert our attention away from the true enemy within, and toward a contrived enemy outside our borders.”

de Grand-Pre explained that his third book actually has three parts: “OK, I’ve got three books out under the title, "Barbarians Inside the Gates." Book 1 was "The Serpent’s Sting," Book 2 is "The Viper’s Venom," Book 3, which just came out is “The Rattler’s Revenge.”

“And I’d like to quote from Book 2, which came out October of 2002. There is a very important paragraph there. It says,

"The trigger for the 911 activity was the imminent and unstoppable worldwide financial collapse which can only be prevented temporarily by a major war, perhaps to become known as World War III. To bring it off one more time, martial law will probably be imposed in the United States."

de Grand-Pre was the top U.S. arms dealer to the Middle East under the Ford and Carter administrations. What he saw caused him to leave government service and begin investigating the forces he saw warping our nation’s future.

In the interview with Jones, de Grand-Pre made several stunning assertions, among them:

• There were no hijackers on the 9/11 killer jets. And he said the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Richard Myers) agrees with him.

In response to a caller to Alex Jones’ radio show, de Grand-Pre noted: “... the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs himself has agreed, there
were no hijackers. There were no cell phone calls. Everybody aboard that aircraft, pilots and crew, were unconscious within 8 to 18 minutes after take-off. And you can take it from there. I’ve got it covered in books 2 and 3, what actually happened.”

“These planes were being piloted by remote control, probably an AWACs aircraft taking over that airplane or airplanes or drones, unmanned drones. And flying them at 5 and 8 G-force that no pilot could withstand. So, in short, and if you read books 2 and 3, you will discover how and why this came about.”

• The 9/11 planes that took off full of passengers are now at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. “And I’m telling you that we are knowledgeably speculating,” said de Grand-Pre in response to another caller. “Those aircraft carrying crew and passengers went over the Atlantic and that was all she wrote.”

• Talk of a military coup — to reverse what he calls the administrative coup d’etat that happened on 9/11 — are rife within the corridors of the Pentagon.

In his various interviews and publications, deGrand-Pre has called 9/11 “an administrative coup d’etat.” He suggests the only way the neocons can be stopped is by a military coup d’etat, and estimates 70 percent of key military personnel are in favor of such a step. But the possibility is complicated, he says, by the large number of key military players who have gone over to the Council on Foreign Relations team. Some of these players, including three- and four-star generals, however, may side with the military while pretending to be on the side of the neocons. de Grand-Pre insists he is in personal contact with members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The truly patriotic members of the military have had to sit there and take all these wild schemes by corporate-controlled politicians. de Grand-Pre’s prediction? “I think those days are coming to an end. The military ain’t going to take it any longer.”

In the interview with Jones, de Grand-Pre also asserted:

• It is common knowledge at the Pentagon that Israel fired nuclear weapons at Iraq during the first Gulf War.

• A commercial aircraft did not hit the Pentagon. Most likely it was a cruise missile or a Global Hawk.

• Flight 93, the jetliner that supposedly crashed in Pennsylvania after courageous passengers struggled with armed hijackers, was shot down by the North Dakota Air Guard. “I know the pilot who fired those two missiles to take down 93,” de Grand-Pre insisted, adding that the order to shoot down the plane came from the Adjutant General of North Dakota.

• Most likely it was U.S. forces that tried to kill Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz when he visited Iraq recently.

• Military tribunals will try current U.S. public officials when the military decides to take over, de Grand-Pre predicts. “And
Cheney, I reiterate, is toast.” de Grand-Pre named Cheney as the one man who knows the most about 9/11.

In earlier interviews, de Grand-Pre has recounted that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Richard Myers, had 500 copies of the 24-page report made and sent out, including, to the White House.

Assessing Myers’ reaction, de Grand Pre said, “I’m quite sure that he believed in it. I think that he still believes in it. You can understand the difficulties. The civilian administration, of course, won’t recognize it as such.

“There’s a definite cleavage between the military of the Pentagon and the civilian hierarchy — and never the twain shall meet.”

Jones triggered a response from de Grand Pre when he mentioned a 2002 article in the Washington Times that said morale at the Pentagon had never been lower.

De Grand-Pre responded: “I can verify that from Col. Dick Schultz, who is a friend of mine in the Joint Chiefs. Morale was not only low but he said some of the troops are ready to mutiny. If it wasn’t for the fact that the government, the civilian hierarchy, has control over retirements, they would probably be blood in the streets by now.”

When other news outlets began checking on this story angle, Jones noted that Pentagon officials were apoplectic. “... they panicked and flew the officers on jets to luxury vacations and had these focus groups. It even talked about a possible mutiny. People were just totally distraught. What would make them become distraught overnight in the Pentagon?”

de Grand-Pre’s answer was chilling, and revealed the possibility of a military coup d’etat has been simmering in the corridors of the Pentagon for some time.

“It wasn’t an overnight thing. You see, as I outline in book 1, and I carry that on in book 2, as well as book 3, we were on the verge of a military coup d’etat. And this was long in the planning and even after the 78 days of bombing Kosovo, it became critical. And we were close to a coup d’etat at that time. In my survey of the reports and the pilots who worked with that, a coup was a possibility.

“In fact, a coup d’etat was pulled on the morning of September 11th. Only it was an administrative or what we call a cold coup d’etat.”

Jones’ translation of that was “a counter-revolutionary junta.”

de Grand-Pre concurred, and added: “And as we delved into that, we found that the culprits, including Rumsfeld, were part of a neocon group that had been planning this thing for literally years prior to September 11th.”

In a previous interview that appeared on Michael Rivero’s What Really Happened website, de Grand-Pre had already outlined his conclusions about 9-11.

“The 9-11 activity and horrific destruction of US property and lives was intentionally meant to trigger a psychological and patriotic
reaction on the part of the US citizens, which is paving the way for “combined UN activity” (using the fig leaf of NATO) for striking key targets in both the Middle East/ South Asia and the Balkans. The goal continues to be ultimate destruction of all national sovereignty
and establishment of a global government.

“The trigger for the 9-11 activity was the imminent and unstoppable world-wide financial collapse, which can only be prevented
(temporarily) by a major war, perhaps to become known as WW 111. To bring it off (one more time), martial law will probably be
imposed in the United States.

de Grand-Pre had also sounded the same themes on Jackie Patru’s Radio Sweet Liberty Webcast.

“The so-called terrorist attack was in fact a superbly executed military operation against the United States, requiring the utmost
professional military skill in command, communications and control. It was flawless in timing, in the choice of selected aircraft to be
used as guided missiles, and in the coordinated delivery of those missiles to their pre-selected targets.

As a tactical military exercise against two significant targets (world financial center and the citadel of world strategic military
planning), the attack, from a psychological impact on the American public, equalled the Japanese "surprise" attack on Pearl Harbor
7 Dec 1941.

But the overriding question of that original group of pilots was: If we are at war, who is the enemy?

The group determined that the enemy is within the gates, that he has infiltrated into the highest policy-making positions at the
federal level, and has absolute control, not only of the purse strings, but of the troop buildup and deployment of our military forces,
including active, reserve and National Guard units.

We're Closer to the Edge Than We Think

t r u t h o u t | Perspective

27 February 2004

It has been interesting to watch the media reaction to a report commissioned by Pentagon security analysts on worst case scenarios for global climate change. The report would never have seen the light of day if it had not been leaked to the business magazine Fortune. Three weeks after the report was covered in Fortune, the British Observer covered it again, unleashing a spate of Internet news stories but very little coverage in US major dailies or TV news. What coverage there was tended to downplay the study's scenarios as “extremely unlikely.”

Yet the study itself calls the risk of abrupt climate change “uncertain and quite possibly small.”

The scenario examined by the report is one that has been known for years. Greenland ice cores document its occurrence several times over the past 15,000 years when the planet warmed naturally following the last ice age. It all has to do with salt. Cold salt water in the North Atlantic sinks and starts a circulation loop called the thermohaline conveyer that eventually brings the warm Gulf Stream up north. This ocean current keeps both North America and Europe warmer than they would otherwise be. Especially Europe. If you look on a map you'll see that Barcelona is at about the same latitude as Boston and we know which one is warmer.

As temperatures rise and ice melts, ocean salt water is diluted with fresh water. The cold water doesn't sink and the warm water stops flowing northward. A hundred year mini ice age gripped Europe 8,200 years ago when North American ice sheets melted and suddenly flooded the ocean with fresh water, shutting down the conveyer. The Pentagon report simply assumes a repeat of that event and analyses the impact on civilization. It is not pretty.

Ever since humans invented agriculture and civilization, the climate has been relatively benign. “Modern civilization has never experienced weather conditions as persistently disruptive as the ones outlined in this scenario,” says the Pentagon report.

Given the fact that this shutting down of the Gulf Stream has occurred many times in the past, why would so many rush to label the report “extreme” and “alarmist”? It is probably more a matter of when, not if, a climate event like this will occur.

More alarming even than this particular scenario is how precarious our situation is right now. The report acknowledges that we are already on the edge of global carrying capacity. Carrying capacity is an ecological term for the ability of the environment to feed and support a population. From the report: “… global demand for oil will grow by 66% in the next 30 years but it's unclear where the supply will come from. Clean water is similarly constrained in many areas around the world. With 815 million people receiving insufficient sustenance world wide, some would say that as a globe, we're living well above our carrying capacity…”

There is a reasonable, plausible possibility that carbon induced global warming will lead to an abrupt regional ice age in the northern hemisphere with Europe the most affected. But the Pentagon has already stated that it will not be passing this report up the line to Rumsfield. You can be sure that the Bush administration will not act in any way on this threat. Perhaps it will be W's revenge on “old Europe.”

The take home message on the Pentagon report comes from Peter Drekmeier, co-founder of Environmentalists Against War, who notes: “It appears that the only weapon of mass destruction to be found in Iraq is oil.”

The Junk Science of George W. Bush

February 19, 2004

by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

As Jesuit schoolboys studying world history we learned that Copernicus and Galileo self-censored for many decades their proofs that the earth revolved around the sun and that a less restrained heliocentrist, Giordano Bruno, was burned alive in 1600 for the crime of sound science. With the encouragement of our professor, Father Joyce, we marveled at the capacity of human leaders to corrupt noble institutions. Lust for power had caused the Catholic hierarchy to subvert the church's most central purpose--the search for existential truths.

Today, flat-earthers within the Bush Administration--aided by right-wing allies who have produced assorted hired guns and conservative think tanks to further their goals--are engaged in a campaign to suppress science that is arguably unmatched in the Western world since the Inquisition. Sometimes, rather than suppress good science, they simply order up their own. Meanwhile, the Bush White House is purging, censoring and blacklisting scientists and engineers whose work threatens the profits of the Administration's corporate paymasters or challenges the ideological underpinnings of their radical anti-environmental agenda. Indeed, so extreme is this campaign that more than sixty scientists, including Nobel laureates and medical experts, released a statement on February 18 that accuses the Bush Administration of deliberately distorting scientific fact "for partisan political ends."

In a similar case, last November the EPA cut a private deal with a pesticide manufacturer to take over federal studies of a pesticide it manufactures. Atrazine is the most heavily utilized weedkiller in America. First approved in 1958, by the 1980s it had been identified as a potential carcinogen associated with high incidences of prostate cancer among workers at manufacturing facilities. Testing by the US Geological Survey regularly finds alarming concentrations of Atrazine in drinking water across the corn belt. Even worse, last year scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, found that Atrazine at one-thirtieth the government's "safe" 3 parts per billion level causes grotesque deformities in frogs, including multiple sets of organs. And this year epidemiologists from the University of Missouri found reproductive consequences in humans associated with Atrazine, including male semen counts in farm communities that are 50 percent below normal. Iowa scientists are finding similar results in a current study.

The Bush Administration reacted to the frightening findings not by banning this dangerous chemical, as the European Union has, but by taking the studies away from EPA scientists and, in an unprecedented move, giving the chemical's manufacturer, Switzerland-based Syngenta, control over federal research. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sherry Ford, a spokesperson for Syngenta, praised without irony the advantages of having the company monitor its own product. "This is one way we can ensure it's not presenting any risk to the environment."

In a dramatic expansion of this disturbing strategy, the Bush Administration now plans to systematically turn government science over to private industry by contracting out thousands of science jobs to compliant consultants already in the habit of massaging data to support corporate profits. The National Park Service is preparing a first phase of contracting reviews, involving about 1,800 positions, including biologists, archeologists and environmental specialists. Later phases may entail replacement of 11,000 employees, more than two-thirds of the service's permanent work force.

Science, like theology, reveals transcendent truths about a changing world. At their best, scientists are moral individuals whose business is to seek the truth. Over the past two decades industry and conservative think tanks have invested millions of dollars to corrupt science. They distort the truth about tobacco, pesticides, ozone depletion, dioxin, acid rain and global warming. In their attempt to undermine the credible basis for public action (by positing that all opinions are politically driven and therefore any one is as true as any other), they also undermine belief in the integrity of the scientific process.

Now Congress and this White House have used federal power for the same purpose. Led by the President, the Republicans have gutted scientific research budgets and politicized science within the federal agencies. The very leaders who so often condemn the trend toward moral relativism are fostering and encouraging the trend toward scientific relativism. The very ideologues who derided Bill Clinton as a liar have now institutionalized dishonesty and made it the reigning culture of America's federal agencies.

The Bush Administration has so violated and corrupted the institutional culture of government agencies charged with scientific research that it could take a generation for them to recover their integrity even if Bush is defeated this fall. Says Princeton University scientist Michael Oppenheimer, "If you believe in a rational universe, in enlightenment, in knowledge and in a search for the truth, this White House is an absolute disaster."

"Anybody But Bush": The Big Abdication

by T. Patrick Donovan

February 12, 2004

Let me get straight to the point.

Following the strategy of "Anybody But Bush" in the upcoming presidential election is equally as dangerous as Bush getting re-elected.

Why? There are two basic reasons.

First, the "Anybody But Bush" (ABB) movement is predicated on the mistaken and illusory belief that Bush & Co. is an aberration from the American political system, rather than extensions of it.

Second, for progressives to submerge ourselves within the ABB tidal wave is a complete abdication of our responsibility as global citizens to agitate around the issues facing this country and the world, rather than once again believing that our work is limited to simply voting for the president every four years.

"These are the times that try men's souls," wrote Tom Paine, a seminal thinker during the birth of America. Today, these are times when the very souls of America and the entire planet are at stake. To think that in this post-9/11 reality we can go on with business as usual, believing that who is in the White House is the only cutting-edge issue, is patently absurd.

Given the debacle in Florida in 2000, the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court intervened in the last election, and the fact that suspect computerized voting machines are on their way, how much faith can we seriously have in the election process as a whole?

More importantly, though, we face today issues wherein the future of the planet is at stake. We know it and the powers-that-be know it too. Bush's election in 2000 was a reflection of the extent and depth of these fundamental problems. Bush's time in office and the policies flowing forth from his tenure – most dramatically the invasion and occupation of Iraq -- are attempts to stem the tide of America's decline.

With the world's oil reserves passing peak production capacities, the beachhead in Iraq is the keystone for both control of the majority of these reserves and the maintenance of our American lifestyle, such as it is these days. I cannot emphasize enough that this occupation (and eventual expansion) is a fundamental part of American global aspirations, and this WILL NOT change whether a Democrat is elected or Bush is re-elected!

Why? Because it cannot be reversed unless a complete re-evaluation and reassessment of America's ambitions toward empire is undertaken. What the ABB movement fails to recognize is that neither Dean nor Kerry nor Gephardt nor Clark are up to the task of dissecting the inner workings of American capitalism and its engine of globalization.

The likeliest scenario, given a Democrat being elected in November, is that they will spin the continued occupation of Iraq as "necessary" and "humane" because America needs to rebuild the country that it destroyed.

So, unlike Vietnam, where "stopping communism" was the rationale, this time the rationale will be "fixing the mess that Bush left us." Different storyline, but the result will be years of continued occupation and control of the region's oil.

The extremism that is the Bush regime is really a mirror into the extreme nature of the situation facing us all. Below all the political machinations, all the dire warnings of economic collapse, renewed plans for nuclear wars, global warming, etc., is the fact that the system that brought us all the benefits of modernity has now revealed its darkest shadow: the absolute commodification of every aspect of our lives, our relationships to each other and our environment. The American Way has brought us to the ultimate precipice.

Despite the extreme difficulty that we humans have in breaking the bonds of habit, inertia, and mesmerization with the status quo, it is time for we, the people, to begin the deep soul-searching, soul-wrenching inquiry and debate over how we reclaim our humanity.

Ultimately, it is NOT the economy, stupid; NOT the environment; NOT foreign policy; NOT even the occupation of Iraq that demands our deepest attention. And it is certainly NOT about uncritically "taking back America."

Important as some of these may be, these are but the symptoms of a greater and more deadly infection: our complete dissociation from our world, each other, and even our own hearts.

This election year could be an amazing opportunity to take a hard look at where humankind has come from and where we are heading. This is the orientation that our elected representatives need to have as well. To drown the nascent potential that these next few months could offer in the staid waters of "Anybody But Bush" is one more crime we inflict on ourselves and on the planet.

And we inflict it at our own peril.

The Rumsfeld-Bush Legal Black Hole

By Nat Hentoff

The Village Voice

27 February 2004

Powers Formerly Reserved Only for Kings

"[After the American Revolution], there was to be no king. . . . Allegiance would go, not to a man with a crown, but to the law. . . . It was to be a 'government of laws and not men.' " —Law in America, Lawrence M. Friedman

"Pick your favorite constitutional amendment or right: its survival during the war on terror cannot be assumed if the legitimacy of these indefinite detentions is sustained." —Thomas H. Moreland, chair of the Federal Courts Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, February 6, 2004

The headline on a February 13 BBC News World Edition dispatch, "Guantánamo Inmates Get New Rights," concerned an announcement by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld that the hundreds of alleged Al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists imprisoned on an American military base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, would from now on get an annual review by a three-person panel to decide whether or not they should be released.

This was a classic misleading headline on a story that left out all the significant details except one: "Mr. Rumsfeld added that the U.S. was planning to hold many of the detainees for 'as long as necessary.'"

The February 13 front-page New York Times story was much more revealing of Bush's parallel legal system. The story began, "Senior Defense Department officials said Thursday that they were planning to keep a large portion of the detainees at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, there for many years, perhaps indefinitely." (Emphasis added.)

Furthermore, the decisions of this new three-person panel Rumsfeld will choose to determine the fates of these prisoners will ultimately get a final review—but only by Donald Rumsfeld, acting for King George. As Michael Ratner, president of the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights—a key litigator in the battle to rescue the Constitution from Bush's warriors—told the Times: "The idea that you could theoretically keep someone locked up forever under these circumstances is reprehensible. . . . It's nothing to do with law as any person should understand it, at least since the Magna Carta. How do you know without a trial that these people are even dangerous? It all depends on the military's word."

Well, some of these prisoners may get what passes for a trial before a military commission. But what kind of trial? That is the subject of a brief to the Supreme Court by five of the military lawyers assigned by the Defense Department to defend prisoners brought before these tribunals in the case of Fawzi Al Odah et al. v. United States.

This is the first time in American history that military lawyers have imperiled their careers by making public statements such as this one, from Marine Corps Major Michael Mori, who told a Washington press conference in January: "The military commissions will not provide a full and fair trial. . . . The commission process has been created and controlled by those with a vested interest only in convictions." (Emphasis added.)

But even if these rigged commissions, also called tribunals, were to give specific sentences to prisoners, there would be no guarantee that they would be released after serving their time. Deep in the New York Times February 13 story is this chilling admission by a "senior defense official [who] said that it was possible that an individual could be convicted by a tribunal and serve a five-year sentence and then not be released if he were judged to remain a danger." (Emphasis added.)

The authority to unilaterally keep a defendant locked up—conceivably for the rest of his or her life—used to be reserved solely for kings, who could ignore any part of the realm's legal system. This monarchical power—as I've indicated in reporting on the indefinite imprisonment, without charges, of American citizens Yaser Hamdi and Jose Padilla—has been expanded by George W. Bush to include defendants at Guantánamo.

The Supreme Court of the United States will decide, during the current term, whether the prisoners at Guantánamo have any recourse to our civilian courts to challenge the Bush-Rumsfeld power to keep them in a legal black hole. This hole is now so bottomless that even if some were to be convicted by an American military tribunal, they might never be released—no matter what their sentences were.

Keep in mind that the rules Rumsfeld and Bush have set for these military tribunals include the denial of any appeals by the defendants to American civilian courts! This door of last resort has been closed even though—contrary to the statements by the president and his solicitor general, Theodore Olson—these proceedings are taking place on territory that, according to the U.S.'s lease with Cuba, is wholly under American jurisdiction.

The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, one of this nation's most influential bar associations, issued an exceptionally valuable 153-page report on February 6, "The Indefinite Detention of 'Enemy Combatants': Balancing Due Process and National Security in the Context of the War on Terror."

Much of the report concerns the indefinite imprisonment of American citizens Yaser Hamdi and Jose Padilla. But the conclusion of the report is also crucially relevant to the prisoners at Guantánamo Bay. If we can strip non-American citizens of all meaningful due process rights, this precedent will also be used by other countries who imprison American "enemy combatants." And the administration's professed concern with spreading the seeds of constitutional democracy to other nations will be farcical. The Association of the Bar of the City of New York's report concludes:

"It should take far more than the monstrous brutality of a handful of terrorists to drive us to abandon our core constitutional values. We can effectively combat terrorism in the United States without jettisoning the core due process principles that form the essence of the rule of law underlying our system of government.

"Insistence on the rule of law will not undermine our national security. Abandoning the rule of law will threaten our national identity." (Emphasis added.)

I have seen nothing of this bar association report in the media. I hope the justices of the Supreme Court will read—and remember—it. "Law," said Thomas Jefferson, "is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the right of the individual."

V LINEAR on May 21, 2004, from 34 degrees South latitude

A Sign in the Sky

The stage is set for a very unusual celestial event. >From late April through May 2004, two recently discovered comets will simultaneously make their closest approach to Earth. Comet NEAT (C/2001 Q4) will be moving from south to north in the evening skies. Comet NEAT will be visible in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Comet LINEAR (C/2002 T7) will be moving easterly across the southern skies. Comet LINEAR is not expected to be visible from the northern hemisphere.

Although the brightness of comets is very difficult to predict, their closeness to Earth makes it likely that these comets will appear at least as bright as Comet Hyakutake in 1996--easily visible to the naked eye.

It is an extremely unusual event to have two comets passing closely to Earth within a period of days. Interestingly, the paths of these comets are roughly perpendicular to each other, forming the shape of a "cross" or a "medicine wheel" in our sky. Some people will naturally see this event as a sign in the heavens. This event will likely produce some interesting observations from indigenous elders and prophets of all traditions across the planet. No matter how it is interpreted, however, this event is certainly in one sense a great blessing--for it will afford us an opportunity to look to the sky together and appreciate the beauty of the living universe that both surrounds and fills us all.
