Veracity Series #11: Time to Get Rid of the Real Bad Apples... including the "Loony Tunes" in Chief

Hello everyone

Compiling such a large amount of material in the midst of plenty other summertime activities is a bit of a challenge - and undoubtedly it is likewise tough to keep up on the receiving end... - but I feel all the following information would never reach most of you if it wasn't for this opportunity to find out about all these critically important developments. The deteriorating mental health of the US Resident surrounded and deeply influenced by very dangerous religious zealots like Ashcroft is right now a growing cause for concern because of all the stupid things he could unleash before being removed from his illegitimate stranglehold on power - see items #3 and 4 below. Not to mention of course the already very very bad influence he has had all around - see all the material below on 9-11 and the absolutely inhumane torture policies of his administration in Iraq where everything is going from bad to hellish worst right now...

So read on and share with others if you feel so inclined...

"The orders to treat prisoners in this fashion were not manufactured by the few "bad apples" we have heard about, but came from up on high. (...) We took thousands of innocent civilians off the streets in Iraq and threw them into hellhole prisons, where they were beaten, raped, and killed. (...) Who is responsible for this abomination? The Occupation at 114 Degrees By ROBERT FISK (July 28, 2004)
Baghdad is Swamped in the Smell of the Dead - The smell of the dead pours into the street through the air-conditioning ducts. Hot, sweet, overwhelming. Inside the Baghdad morgue, there are so many corpses that the fridges are overflowing. The dead are on the floor. Dozens of them. Outside, in the 46C (114F) heat, Qadum Ganawi tells me how his brother Hassan was murdered. "He was bringing supper home for our family in Palestine Street but he never reached our home. Then we got a phone call saying we could have him back if we paid $50,000 [#27,500]. We didn't have $50,000. So we sold part of our home and many of our things and we borrowed $15,000 and we paid over the money to a man in a car who was wearing a keffiyeh scarf round his head. "Then we got another phone call, telling us that Hassan was at the Saidiyeh police station. He was. He was blindfolded and gagged and he had two bullets in his head. They had taken our money and then they had killed him." There is a wail of grief from the yard behind us where 50 people are waiting in the shade of the Baghdad mortuary wall. There are wooden coffins in the street, stacked against the wall, lying on the pavement. Old men--fathers and uncles--are padding them with grease-proof paper. When the bodies are released, they will be taken to the mosque in coffins and then buried in shrouds. There are a few women. Most stare at the intruding foreigner with something approaching venom. The statistics of violent death in Baghdad are now beyond shame. Almost a year ago, there were sometimes 400 violent deaths a month. This in itself was a fearful number to follow the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq. But in the first 10 days of this July alone, the corpses of 215 men and women were brought to the Baghdad mortuary, almost all of them dead from gunshot wounds. In the second 10 days of this month, the bodies of a further 291 arrived. A total of 506 violent deaths in under three weeks in Baghdad alone. Even the Iraqi officials here shake their heads in disbelief. "New Iraq" under its new American-appointed Prime Minister is more violent than ever. (...) Not long ago, six corpses arrived at the Baghdad mortuary after being brought in by US forces. Three were unidentified. Three had names but their families could not be found. All had suffered, according to the American records, "traumatic wounds to the head", the normal phrase for gunshot wounds. There were no autopsies. Death is now so routine even the most tragic of deaths becomes a footnote. A US tank collides with a bus north of Baghdad. Seven civilians are killed. The Americans agree to open an investigation. It makes scarcely a paragraph in the local press. Four days ago, a US M1A1 Abrams tank crossing the motorway at Abu Ghraib collided with a car carrying two girls and their mother, all of whom were crushed to death. It did not even make the news in Baghdad. No wonder the occupying powers--or the "international forces" as we must now call them--steadfastly refuse to reveal the statistics of Iraqi dead, only their own Even the deaths we do know about during the past 36 hours make shocking reading. Unreported War: U.S. Document Reveals Scale of Conflict - By Robert Fisk (29 July 2004)
Iraq, we are told by Mr. Blair, is safer. It is not. US military reports clearly show much of the violence in Iraq is not revealed to journalists, and thus goes largely unreported. This account of the insurgency across Iraq over three days last week provides astonishing proof that Iraq under its new, American-appointed Prime Minister, has grown more dangerous and violent. But even this is only a partial record of events. US casualties and dozens of Iraqi civilian deaths each day are not included in the reports. But here are the events, as recorded by the United States military on 20, 22 and 23 July. Few were publicly disclosed. CLIP

Soldiers tell stories about Iraq (July 26, 2004)
NORTHAMPTON - When his turn came to speak at the community dialogue on the Iraq War, Staff Sgt. Jimmy Massey of the United States Marines Corps chewed his gum slowly and slowly scanned the 150 people in the audience. What he was about to say required deliberation. "We shot a man with his hands up," he said, "We even shot women and children." (...) Massey told the audience of his disillusionment with the war. The only one of the three to engage in combat, the 12-year veteran from North Carolina said he was fully prepared to kill or be killed. But that was before the war. Today he said he takes five different anti-depressant and anti-anxiety pills to help him deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Firing on civilians and securing oil fields was not the duty he signed up for, he said. "Why are Marines learning to shut down oil wells - are we the Environmental Protection Agency now?" he asked as he told the audience of his realization that this war was not one he agreed with. He started asking questions and was reassigned to combat duty. "I'm in the desert, I'm gung-ho, ready to kill," he said, putting "your tax dollars to work. Unfortunately, your tax dollars went into a lot of civilians. I was there. I pulled the trigger. CLIP

The U.S. occupation of Iraq officially ended on June 28, 2004, in a secret ceremony in Baghdad. Officially, "full sovereignty" was handed from the Americans to the Iraqi Interim Government. But it was clear from the start that this was sovereignty in name, not in deed. First, there is the continued military occupation: 138,000 U.S. soldiers and Marines, plus 20,000 troops from other countries and an estimated 20,000 contractors, all fully under U.S. control and immune to Iraqi laws. Equally debilitating, however significantly less well reported upon, is the continued political and economic occupation by the Bush administration and its corporate allies. The most important tools being used by the Bush administration to maintain varying degrees of economic and political control in Iraq are the 100 Orders enacted by L. Paul Bremer, III, head of the now defunct Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) before his departure. It was thought that the "end" of the occupation would also mean the end of the Orders. Instead, in his final Order enacted on his last day in the country, Bremer simply transferred authority for the Orders over to the new Prime Minister, Iyad Allawi. For his part, Allawi--a thirty-year exile of Iraq with close ties to both the CIA and British Intelligence Services--is considered America's new man in charge of Iraq. CLIP

War in Iraq 'Preventing Efforts to Stop Sudan Genocide' (28 July 2004)
Britain and America's preoccupation with Iraq has blocked international efforts to end genocide in the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan, according to a highly critical report published by a think-tank close to Tony Blair. The study, to be published today, said that the war in Iraq had prevented effective planning for military intervention which could have bolstered diplomatic efforts to prevent the bloodshed, which has driven more than a million people from their homes. It warned that discussion on Iraq had prevented the United Nations Security Council discussing the Darfur crisis in May and diverted attention from clear warning signs that started emerging more than a year ago. The War Path of Unity - Democrats Reject Peace Movement
It is sad indeed, but it was inevitable: Dennis Kucinich, the feisty progressive from Ohio who has been running (dragging lately) for the Democratic nomination for president has decided to roll over and play dead for Senator John Kerry. "Unity is essential to bring change in November," announced Kucinich on July 22. "Unity is essential to repair America. Unity is essential to set America on a new path." It is confusing to say the least as to what this “new path” mantra is all about. It was just last week that Kucinich delegates failed (they never had a chance in hell to begin with) to make “immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq” a central plank in Kerry’s narrow platform. As promised, Kerry will put more troops in Iraq, call on NATO to intervene, and essentially be a more kick-ass administrator of Bush’s egregious foreign policy then the neocons are. Kucinich is now the second Democratic nominee for president that has abandoned his antiwar base, and allowed his candidacy to be absorbed back into the dank establishment sponge. Howard Dean did it months ago, and now embarrassingly touts the new Democratic line of “unity at all costs.”

Who Is Bankrolling the Bush and Kerry Campaigns? (July 23, 2004)
Candidates Have More Than 1,000 Big-Money Bundlers Between Them - Shows Which Industries Are Collecting the Most Money - WASHINGTON, D.C.– The presidential campaigns of George W. Bush and John Kerry have raised an unprecedented $414 million during the primary season, relying to a significant extent on the efforts of more than 1,000 corporate executives, lawyers, lobbyists and other wealthy special interests who have maximized their political influence by bundling a large number of individual contributions for the candidate of their choice. A new analysis by Public Citizen, posted today at, offers a side-by-side comparison of the minimum amounts bundled by key industries for each candidate. As of June 30, the president had raised $42 million more than his opponent, so it’s no surprise that he collected more than Kerry from most key industries. But executives from the energy, transportation, construction and agriculture sectors bundled contributions almost exclusively for Bush. However, Kerry has raised significantly more than Bush from lawyers and the media/entertainment industry. Several industries – finance, in particular – have given eye-popping amounts to both candidates.“An elite group of rainmakers seeks to hijack our democracy,” said Public Citizen President Joan Claybrook. “The question is whether Bush will step up as Kerry already has to support the McCain-Feingold-Shays-Meehan proposal to overhaul the presidential public financing system. That’s the only way to rescue our elections from the clutches of the special interests bankrolling both campaigns.” CLIP

My Dear Friends:

A client of mine recently become curious about my research and asked for videos he could watch to learn more about what is happening in our world. Before he did, he explained to me his hesitation. He said recently he had dedicated himself to watching as much TV news and as many documentaries as he could. He became so depressed that he decided to stop listening to any news at all!

When I asked him if he wouldn't rather know the truth than hide from it, he said: "Neal, why should we even get into all of this when there's nothing we can really do about it!"

His depression was not so much about the news as it was about his sense of helplessness. One of the reasons so many people have this feeling is because no matter how many petitions, no matter who gets elected, no matter how many people protest in the capitals of the world, nothing seems to change!

Well, first of all, these things actually are having an affect. It's just not visible yet. But more important, our deceptive hidden elite, who are clever enough to change the way a whole nation of people think and feel want you to feel exactly like my client! They want you to feel that you are helpless, and there is absolutely nothing you can do!!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not advocating we stop speaking out or stop standing up for the truth. What I am saying is, instead of spending all our time and energy trying to correct a system that is intentionally ignoring the will of the common man, why don't we do what people all through history have done, and ask ourselves what kind of world and what kind of society we want to live in!!

Hey, if you don't like the system they hand you, make one of your own!! Remember the Declaration of Independence? Our Founding Fathers essentially told England if you don't like the way we're doing things over here, we'll just start our own country and make our own government. And that was how we arrived at one of the greatest experiments in human history!!

The only difference is, unlike our Founding Fathers, our Declaration of Independence must be for the sake of people around the world, not just those on one continent!

My dear friends, we are at a crossroads. I humbly ask you, please, if nothing else for the sake of your loved ones, take the time to get a real picture of what is going on in the world around you. Nearly every aspect of modern life (politics, food, disease, pollution, economics, technology, weather, earthquakes, the solar system) is rapidly and radically transforming. This is no longer conjecture; it is fact!

Please refuse to be put to sleep by your TV, your news media, your pharmaceuticals, your movies and the hypnotic impulse to just go on making ever more money!

As of last December, we virtually have no right to bear arms in this country (1). More searches and seizures may now be carried out without warrants than ever before. All of our local libraries have already been visited by the FBI in search of suspicious activities. My friends, who own a book store, have been informed that if they are required to turn over records on one of their customers, they cannot tell that customer, unless they are willing to face federal prosecution. Rush Limbaugh just had the Patriot Act used against him right after they told us it would never be used against American citizens (2). Over 200 Cities have passed resolutions of "no support" for the Patriot Act, and yet, Dec. 13th of last year, hidden behind the story of Saddam's capture, they passed even more drastic attacks on our Constitutional rights and privacy (3).

Our government grew 24% last year alone. Of 189 countries worldwide, the US military inhabits 121 of them!!

Please don't tell me this all seems "normal" to you?

It will not be long and you will begin to observe that when you speak politics, your head will turn to make sure no one is listening. That feeling should tell you everything - that we are no longer a free country in the way we used to be, that our constitutional protections have been all but completely dismantled.

Add to this, erratic weather, noticed in every country around the world, solar activity beyond anything thought possible in modern times, dramatic changes in our earth's magnetic field, massive ice fields becoming water again, countless other extraordinary phenomena, and it should be quite apparent by now, there was no mistake in the warnings of ancient civilizations all pointing to this day and time!

Do you trust your governments and corporations and talking heads to tell you what you need to know to make a life for yourself in a world that is changing beyond anything in recorded history?

People need a place where they can come together to face these realities and to talk about where to go from here.

Bush Using Drugs to Control Depression, Erratic Behavior

By TERESA HAMPTON Editor, Capitol Hill Blue

Jul 28, 2004

President George W. Bush is taking powerful anti-depressant drugs to control his erratic behavior, depression and paranoia, Capitol Hill Blue has learned.

The prescription drugs, administered by Col. Richard J. Tubb, the White House physician, can impair the President’s mental faculties and decrease both his physical capabilities and his ability to respond to a crisis, administration aides admit privately.

“It’s a double-edged sword,” says one aide. “We can’t have him flying off the handle at the slightest provocation but we also need a President who is alert mentally.”

Angry Bush walked away from reporter's questions. Tubb prescribed the anti-depressants after a clearly-upset Bush stormed off stage on July 8, refusing to answer reporters' questions about his relationship with indicted Enron executive Kenneth J. Lay.

“Keep those motherfuckers away from me,” he screamed at an aide backstage. “ If you can’t, I’ll find someone who can.”

Bush’s mental stability has become the topic of Washington whispers in recent months. Capitol Hill Blue first reported on June 4 about increasing concern among White House aides over the President’s wide mood swings and obscene outbursts.

Although GOP loyalists dismissed the reports as anti-Bush propaganda, the reports were later confirmed by prominent George Washington University psychiatrist Dr. Justin Frank in his book Bush on the Couch: Inside the Mind of the President. Dr. Frank diagnosed the President as a “paranoid megalomaniac” and “ untreated alcoholic” whose “lifelong streak of sadism, ranging from childhood pranks (using firecrackers to explode frogs) to insulting journalists, gloating over state executions and pumping his hand gleefully before the bombing of Baghdad” showcase Bush’s instabilities.

“I was really very unsettled by him and I started watching everything he did and reading what he wrote and watching him on videotape. I felt he was disturbed,” Dr. Frank said. “He fits the profile of a former drinker whose alcoholism has been arrested but not treated.”

Dr. Frank’s conclusions have been praised by other prominent psychiatrists, including Dr. James Grotstein, Professor at UCLA Medical Center, and Dr. Irvin Yalom, MD, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University Medical School.

The doctors also worry about the wisdom of giving powerful anti-depressant drugs to a person with a history of chemical dependency. Bush is an admitted alcoholic, although he never sought treatment in a formal program, and stories about his cocaine use as a younger man haunted his campaigns for Texas governor and his first campaign for President.

“President Bush is an untreated alcoholic with paranoid and megalomaniac tendencies,” Dr. Frank adds.

The White House did not return phone calls seeking comment on this article.

Although the exact drugs Bush takes to control his depression and behavior are not known, White House sources say they are “powerful medications” designed to bring his erratic actions under control. While Col. Tubb regularly releases a synopsis of the President’s annual physical, details of the President’s health and any drugs or treatment he may receive are not public record and are guarded zealously by the secretive cadre of aides that surround the President.

Veteran White House watchers say the ability to control information about Bush’s health, either physical or mental, is similar to Ronald Reagan’s second term when aides managed to conceal the President’s increasing memory lapses that signaled the onslaught of Alzheimer’s Disease.

It also brings back memories of Richard Nixon’s final days when the soon-to-resign President wondered the halls and talked to portraits of former Presidents. The stories didn’t emerge until after Nixon left office.

One long-time GOP political consultant who – for obvious reasons – asked not to be identified said he is advising his Republican Congressional candidates to keep their distance from Bush.

“We have to face the very real possibility that the President of the United States is loony tunes,” he says sadly. “That’s not good for my candidates, it’s not good for the party and it’s certainly not good for the country.”

Sullen, Depressed President Retreats Into Private, Paranoid World

Capitol Hill Blue Staff
July 29, 2004

A sullen President George W. Bush is withdrawing more and more from aides and senior staff, retreating into a private, paranoid world where only the ardent loyalists are welcome.

Cabinet officials, senior White House aides and leaders on Capitol Hill complain privately about the increasing lack of "face time" with the President and campaign advisors are worried the depressed President may not be up to the rigors of a tough re-election campaign.

"Yes, there are concerns," a top Republican political advisor admitted privately Wednesday. "The George W. Bush we see today is not the same, gregarious, back-slapping President of old. He's moody, distrustful and withdrawn."

Bush's erratic behavior and sharp mood swings led White House physician Col. Richard J. Tubb to put the President on powerful anti-depressant drugs after he stormed off stage rather than answer reporters' questions about his relationship with indicted Enron executive Kenneth J. Lay, but White House insiders say the strong, prescription medications seem to increase Bush's sullen behavior towards those around him.

"This is a President known for his ability to charm people one-on-one," says a staff member to House Speaker Dennis J. Hastert. "Not any more."

White House aides say Bush has retreated into a tightly-controlled environment where only top political advisors like Karl Rove and Karen Hughes are allowed. Even White House chief of staff Andrew Card complains he has less and less access to the President.

Among cabinet members, only Attorney General John Ashcroft, a fundamentalist who shares many of Bush's strict religious convictions, remains part of the inner circle. White House aides call Bush and Ashcroft the "Blue Brothers" because, like the mythical movie characters, "both believe they are on a mission from God."

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, the man most responsible for waging America's war on terrorism, complains to staff that he gets very little time with the President and gets most of his marching orders lately from Ashcroft. Some on Ridge's staff gripe privately that Ashcroft is "Bush's Himmler," a reference to Heinrich Himmler, Chief of the SS (the German Police) under Adolph Hitler.

"Too many make the mistake of thinking Dick Cheney is the real power in the Bush administration," says one senior Homeland Security aide. "They're wrong. It's Ashcroft and that is reason enough for all of us to be very, very afraid."

While Vice President Cheney remains part of Bush's tight, inner circle, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has fallen out of favor and tells his staff that "no matter what happens in November, I'm outta here."

White House aides say the West Wing has been overtaken by a "siege mentality," where phone calls and emails are monitored and everyone is under suspicion for "disloyalty to the crown."

"I was questioned about an email I sent out on my personal email account from home," says one staffer. "When I asked how they got access to my personal email account, I was told that when I came to work at the White House I gave up any rights to privacy."

Another staffer was questioned on why she once dated a registered Democrat.

"He voted for Bush in 2000," she said, "but that didn't seem to matter. Mary Matalin is married to James Carville and that's all right but suddenly my loyalty is questioned because a former boyfriend was a Democrat?" Matalin, a Republican political operative and advisor to the Bush campaign, is the wife of former Bill Clinton political strategist James Carville.

Psychiatrists say the increasing paranoia at the White House is symptomatic of Bush's "paranoid, delusional personality."

Dr. Justin Frank, a prominent Washington psychiatrist and author of the book, Bush on the Couch, Inside the Mind of the President, says the President suffers from "character pathology," including "grandiosity" and "megalomania" - viewing himself, America and God as interchangeable.

Dr. Frank also concludes that Bush's years of heavy drinking "may have affected his brain function - and his decision to quit drinking without the help of a 12-step programs puts him at a far higher risk of relapse."

Whatever the cause for the President's increasing paranoia and delusions, veteran White House watchers see a strong parallel with another Republican president from 30 years ago.

"From what people who work there now tell me, this White House looks more and more like the White House of Richard M. Nixon," says retired political science professor George Harleigh, who worked in the Nixon White House. "It may be 2004 but it is starting to seem more like 1974 (the year Nixon resigned in disgrace)."

Thinking Unthinkable Thoughts: Theologian Charges White House Complicity in 9/11 Attack

by Nick Welsh

There’s nothing the least bit wild-eyed or hysterical about David Ray Griffin. In person, he’s disarmingly calm, and speaks in the unflappably precise and deliberate style of a lifelong academic. Which is exactly what Griffin is. A respected philosopher of religion at the Claremont School of Theology since the 1970s and longtime Santa Barbara resident, Griffin is now raising questions that even President Bush’s harshest critics are afraid to think, let alone ask aloud.

In his latest book, The New Pearl Harbor — released just two weeks ago — Griffin all but accuses the Bush administration of taking a dive on September 11 and giving Al Qaeda terrorists an unobstructed shot at the World Trade Center. According to Griffin, a case can be made that the Bush administration arranged the attack, or allowed it to happen. He is aware that he may be dismissed as a conspiracy nut, but given the “transcendent importance” of the issue, Griffin is willing to assume that risk and has taken to repeating Michael Moore’s line on the subject: “Personally, I’m not into conspiracy theories except those that are true.” I met with Griffin over coffee to discuss his book and the September 11 investigation. The following is an edited account of their conversation.

Is there a smoking gun that shows the Bush administration knew 9/11 was likely to happen and did nothing about it?

I think there are four. One is the fact that standard operating procedures for dealing with possibly hijacked airplanes were not followed on 9/11. Those procedures call for fighter jets to be sent out immediately upon any sign that a plane may have been hijacked. These jets typically get to the plane within no later than 15 minutes anywhere in the United States. And on that day, there were four airplanes that went for a half-hour or more after they were hijacked without jets intercepting them.

What’s the official explanation of that?

I’m afraid the press has not done its job. They have not forced government officials to explain why standard operating procedures were not followed that day, nor have they pressed the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to explain why they didn’t report these hijackings as they were supposed to. The official story is that [the fighter jets] were very late.

And the other smoking guns?

The second strongest piece of evidence I would say is the crash at the Pentagon. The physical evidence contradicts so violently the official account, that the Pentagon was hit by a Boeing 757 — Flight 77, that is. The physical evidence, photographs, and eyewitness testimony say that the Pentagon was hit by something that caused a hole no larger than 18 feet in diameter. The story the Pentagon put out, and was published by the Washington Post, was that the hole in the Pentagon was five stories high and 200 feet wide. If you look at the photographs taken by Tom Horan of the Associated Press — that’s just not the size of the hole.

But if the hole was only 18 feet wide, it had to have been created by something other than a Boeing. Whatever went into the Pentagon pierced six reinforced walls. This was the west wing, the part of the Pentagon being refurbished and reinforced. These walls were extra strong, and yet whatever it was went through six walls creating a hole about seven feet in diameter in the sixth wall. This had to have been something with a very powerful head on it. A Boeing 757 has a very fragile nose, and would not have pierced through all those walls; it would have been crushed by hitting the Pentagon. And given that it only penetrated these three rings, the rest of the aircraft would have been sitting outside on the yard. And yet the photographs taken just as the fire trucks got there — very shortly after the crash — show no plane whatsoever.

What do they show?

They show no aircraft whatsoever. And everyone agrees on this. The official story is that the whole aircraft went inside the Pentagon. The problem with that — the firefighters in there would have seen the airplane. They would have seen the engines, they would have seen the aluminum fuselage, but they reported nothing. Ed Plower, the fire chief, when asked what he saw, said, “I didn’t see any big pieces, no fuselage, no engines, no nothing.” But about a month later, when asked he said, “Oh yes, I saw all that.” His memory had had time to be refreshed.

If what you’re saying is accurate — that it was a missile — then what happened to the plane and all the people on it?

That’s why I stress I’m not trying to give an account of what really happened. I have no idea what happened to Flight 77.

President Bush has also been criticized for behaving somewhat bizarrely that day.

As he and the Secret Service got word that a second plane had crashed into the World Trade Center and that three planes had been hijacked, there could have been no possible doubt in their mind that the United States was under terrorist attack . . . The most horrendous attack the United States had ever suffered. And they would have had to assume that one or more of them were heading toward President Bush himself. And so upon learning about this, the Secret Service surely would have whisked him away immediately. In fact, one Secret Service agent on the scene said, “We’re out of here.” But obviously he got overruled because President Bush stayed there. After Andrew Card reported the second crash on the World Trade Center, the president just nodded as if he understood and said, “We’re going to go ahead with the reading lesson.” And he sat there another 15 minutes listening to the children read a story about a pet goat. This was a photo op and when it was over he lingered around talking to the children and talking to the teacher.

Bill Sammon, of the Washington Times, wrote a very pro-Bush book, yet he comments how casual and relaxed the president was given the fact he’d just learned the country was under attack. He said Bush took his own sweet time and in fact called him “Our Dawdler in Chief.” And then the president went on national TV, going forward with an interview that had been planned and announced in advance . . . then they took their regularly scheduled motorcade back to the airport. In other words, [Bush and the Secret Service] showed no fear whatsoever that they would be targeted for attack, which strongly suggests they knew how many aircraft were being hijacked and what their targets were.

Couldn’t it have been that he was trying to project calm in the eye of the storm, that this was Bush projecting Churchillian resolve in the face of calamity?

People who want to believe such things can, of course, imagine such scenarios. But the president in a situation like that does not make the decisions; the Secret Service team makes the decisions. And the guys in the Secret Service are trained to be ready for a catastrophe like this where they make snap decisions and whisk the president to safety immediately. They would have had an escape route planned; they would have had contingencies planned — they always do. It is at least not very plausible to think they would have remained there and endangered the lives of all the children and teachers at that school in order to exude that Churchillian confidence.

What about the plane thatcrashed down?

We know that on Flight 93, which crashed over Pennsylvania, the passengers were trying to get control of the aircraft. They had decided the hijackers did not have bombs and probably didn’t even have guns. And because their plane didn’t take off until a half-hour after the others, they knew that the others had crashed into the World Trade Center — so they knew they were going to die anyway, even if they didn’t do anything. So as one of the passengers is saying, “They’re doing it, they’re forcing their way into the cabin, they’re going to make it.” As soon as that happened, with the FBI listening in, the plane went down. There was a whoosh, then the sound of wind. And people on the ground reported hearing what Vietnam veterans said sounded like a missile. Furthermore, there was debris from the plan eight miles from the crash site, suggesting the plane had been hit and stuff started falling out. And one of the engines was found over a mile from the crash site. Of course, if it had been a missile that downed the plane, it most likely would have been a heat-seeking missile that would have found the engine and knocked it off.

Why would the government have an interest in doing this?
So the hijackers couldn’t speak to anyone?

That would be a very good reason. If it were a conspiracy and the hijackers knew about it, it would have been very threatening to those who made the plan to have anybody left alive. Again, I don’t pretend to know, but that’s at least a plausible scenario. There were many rumors that day that the plane was shot down, but the government denied it.

You suggest that the World Trade Center buildings must have been detonated with explosives to account for the heat generated and the speed the structures collapsed on themselves. That sounds extreme. What’s the evidence?

The evidence is cumulative — several things that point to controlled demolition. First, a steel-framed building, according to all the reading I’ve done, has never collapsed solely because of fire. They will bend and buckle in a very large all-consuming fire that lasts for a very long time. But they have never collapsed.

But it was not just fire — it was fire and impact at the same time.

The twin towers were very large buildings and extremely well built with a lot of redundancy. Even people who believe the official theory say that the crash of the plane into the towers should have been insignificant, that the shock would have been immediate, but it was over very soon and that the buildings were extremely solid and stable and not moving. In the south tower, much of the fuel from it spilled outside as it collided into the corner. So there was a giant firebomb which looked very impressive, but what that means is that most of the fuel was burned up within a minute, so there was not much fuel inside. Therefore, the fire in the south tower had almost gone out in less than an hour. And that brings us to another strange fact about the towers. If the official story were correct, that the combination of the crash and the fire brought the buildings down, we would expect the north tower to have come down first, because it was hit first. And yet the south tower collapsed first. It collapsed in less than an hour. That makes perfect sense if you’re willing to accept that it was caused by controlled demolition, meaning the building was wired with explosives. And if the official story has it that the buildings were brought down by fire, you’d want the buildings to go down before the fire had completely gone out.

What you’re suggesting sounds like something from. X-Files. But on X-Files, you always had agents Scully and Mulder trying to get the truth out. Here we don’t have any Scullys and Mulders. You’d think this whole new unilateral expression of military supremacy might have opponents within the administration coming unglued and that they’d be leaking info damaging to Bush, but we don’t hear those voices. Why not?

Members of the FBI, the CIA, and other intelligence agencies have taken oaths to not reveal things they’ve been told not to reveal . . . and if they violate this oath, repercussions may occur. You have a wife and children, and somebody says to you, “If you go public with that I cannot guarantee the safety of your family.” Would you go public with that? You have to choose between your family’s welfare and the welfare of the nation, and your story might not do that much good. You might just be denounced as a conspiracy kook. The press would ignore you, belittle you. People might look into your past and find that you had done some things you’re not so proud of. People would learn very quickly to keep their mouths shut.

Let’s say there has been this complicity. To what end?

There were several benefits that could have been anticipated from 9/11. One was the so-called Patriot Act. It did appear that the Patriot Act, given how fast it was rushed into Congress, voting had already been prepared. The Patriot Act is so large that it’s inconceivable it could have been written after 9/11. Rushing it through Congress when most members had not even read a small portion of it was clearly one benefit, giving the government increased powers.
Also, there was the desire to wage war in Afghanistan to force out the Taliban and put an American-friendly government in place because of the desire of Unical and other gas companies to build an oil pipeline, which they felt was too dangerous with the Taliban in power. There was a meeting in Berlin in July 2001, a final effort to get an agreement between the Taliban and the United States that would allow a sort of joint government, where the Taliban would share power with more American-friendly leaders. The Taliban refused, at which point they were told, “If you don’t take our carpet of gold, we’ll bury you under a carpet of bombs.” The Pakistani representative at this meeting said the Americans told him that the war would start before the snows came that October. And after 9/11 happened, there was exactly the right amount of time for the U.S. forces to get organized to begin the war, and the war began on October 7.

Another benefit is that many senior members of the Bush administration had for a long time wanted to attack Iraq. Getting control of the oil there was one motive; the more general motive was to secure a military presence in that part of the world.

Don’t you think it’s a good thing that Saddam Hussein was taken out, and don’t you think Bush had a moral obligation to do so because it was his father who was responsible for building up Hussein in the first place?

Certainly you can say there were some benefits to the people of Iraq. But if we had an obligation to take out Saddam Hussein then we have obligations to take out many other nefarious leaders around the world, many of whom are far worse, believe it or not, than Saddam Hussein. And the sorry history is that we have in fact supported such leaders and that Saddam Hussein was in power only because of American support. He remained in power after gassing the Kurds became common knowledge. Donald Rumsfeld himself visited Saddam at that period. Actually our aid to Saddam went up after we knew that he had done this.

So you think this is mostly about oil.

It is to a significant extent about oil, given the projections that the world is beginning to run out of oil. The United States wants to get control of it because our way of life, which is so dependent upon oil, is nonnegotiable. And also because military dominance itself runs to great extent on oil. But it’s not just about oil. It’s about geopolitical dominance. And this brings up the U.S. Space command. In the document “Rebuilding America’s Defenses,” published in 2000 by the Project for the New American Century — an organization founded by people such as [Richard] Perle and [Paul] Wolfowitz and [Dick] Cheney and Rumsfeld — there is a statement in there that says we need to move forward with this revolution in military affairs. The central feature of this is the augmentation of the U.S. Space Command through which the United States would have what’s called now Full Spectrum Dominance. In addition to having dominance over land, air, and sea, we would have dominance in space. But building the space stations and the satellites for the weaponization of space will be an extremely expensive undertaking. One projection has the first stage of it being about a trillion dollars. So an enormous amount of money has to be shifted from the American taxpayers and other parts of the economy to the military and the space command. The document states that such a revolution in military affairs will probably proceed very slowly absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event such as a new Pearl Harbor.

Hence the title of your book . . . You’ve complained the American media has been asleep at the switch on this. How do you account for this?

It is very difficult for Americans to face the possibility that their own government may have caused or deliberately allowed such a heinous event. Secondly, one can understand that insofar as the media is owned by companies like General Electric, which is one of the largest makers of weapons, stations like NBC that are owned by GE would not wish to publicize these connections. And finally, 9/11 was immediately treated not only as a matter of patriotism but almost as a religious event. Bush declared his war on terrorism from the national cathedral. And so from then on, any questioning of the official account could be and was criticized as being undemocratic and almost sacrilegious.

I at least hope that if we can begin to get a public discussion of 9/11 and of the many, many discrepancies between the official story and what at least appear to be the facts, that some of those people might be emboldened to step forward.

How has researching and writing this book affected you personally?I fear that our democracy is in much worse shape than I had imagined, and that even the appearance of democracy we now have might be quickly swept aside.

The 9/11 Whitewash: Blaming No One

It takes a lot of whitewash to cover over the murder of 3,000 Americans, but that’s what you get when you appoint a “hand-picked” panel to investigate a tragedy like 9-11.

The great virtue of selecting each member on an investigative team, (like the Bush Administration did) is that the results are assured before the first bit of evidence is examined. No embarrassing allegations or blame, just a “shrug of the shoulders” and “let’s move on”.

In Bush-world the “buck never stops”, it just keeps circulating until the public loses interest.

This is the reality of the “500 plus” page 9-11 report, that dismisses the incompetence (or treachery) of the people at the top, as a “failure of imagination.”

There was no failure of imagination. According to the report the President received “at least 12 warnings from the CIA that an attack was imminent”. Either, Bush and his cronies were asleep at the switch or they made damn sure the switch was in the right position for their “Pearl Harbor-like event”. (Alluded to in the Project for the New American Century) The extent of the “whitewash” was painfully apparent last night on PBS’s Jim Lehrer News Hour. In a Margaret Warner interview with Condoleezza Rice, Warner (who always asks the “tough” questions) asked Rice, “Do you think it was a failure of imagination?”

Rice, who has been at the center of the 9-11 storm from the very onset, broke into a wide, Cheshire cat smile, unable to contain her glee. She knew (along with everyone else in the Bush Administration) that the report put to rest any implication of responsibility or, heaven forbid, culpability on the part of those in charge. Instead, it drew the broadest of conclusions, suggesting that even the “American people shared the blame for 9-11 for underestimating the terrorist threat”. (I’m not making this up)

Both commissioners of the 9-11 team appeared on The News Hour on Thursday, passing “o so softly” over the details, instead, opting to stick to their “talking points”. Those talking points could have been predicted before they went “on air”.

Both Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton emphasized that “When everyone is to blame… no one is to blame” (Again, I am not making this up)

Democratic hack, Hamilton went so far as to admit that, “We decided early on that we weren’t going to play the blame game.”

Say what?

The Administration convenes a panel to investigate the greatest act of mass murder in the country’s history and Hamilton doesn’t want to find out who is responsible?

This is pure gold.

Kean’s admissions weren’t much better. He took the approach that we were simply “caught napping” and so “we should focus on the future, not the past.”

Astonishing….an investigation that “focuses on the future”. This is a script worthy of Orwell. At least now we know that the expressed intention of the commission leaders was to “never lay a glove” on Bush or his cronies.

They succeeded admirably.

As for the “Independent” Commission’s recommendations; the greatest emphasis was put on the need for a “National Intelligence Director”, who will have authority over the many disparate intelligence organizations and Congressional committees.

As Tom Kean said, “He should serve at the pleasure of the President”, assuring that the position will be filled by a political operative capable of maligning the facts in the same way the Pentagon’s OSP (Office of Special Plans) did prior to the war in Iraq.

I expect this position to be “fine-tuned” by the Bush Administration to become the foundation of an American Secret Police… the Bush KGB.

It’s only a matter of time.

6.7 million Americans are in jail, but Kean panel refused to investigate the crime; worse, alternative explanations fail to convince public that coverup happened

By John Kaminski

In a country that spends billions of dollars on its prisons, babbles incessantly about law and order, and now has 6.7 million of its citizens behind bars, in the case of the greatest crime in its history — the 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington — the official panel appointed by the president to investigate this catastrophic caper decided that finding out who really did it was unimportant, and devoted no time to pursuing the matter.

Let me say it again. Every politician in America campaigns using rabid law-and-order, anti-terror rhetoric, and applauds the pathetic fact that the U.S. spends much more money on jails than it does on schools. Putting criminals in jail is a top priority for all aspiring political candidates. Yet when it came to conducting a competent investigation of the greatest crime in American history, the panel, which was appointed by the very thugs who many consider to be the real perpetrators of the entire tragedy, made no effort to find out who the guilty parties actually were. Instead, a seedy group of compromised political functionaries relied on baseless and unsubstantiated fictions by the patrician powermongers who run the U.S., and conducted no real investigation at all.

What is wrong with this picture?

OK, for you TV-ized dullards out there, I'm going to run through this wretched riddle one more time.

Because of the profits now being exploited by conducting legitimate businesses but using prison labor at 11 cents an hour, America's prison population is the largest in the world. The central issue in the upcoming presidential election is national security, and as a result, tens of thousands of innocent people are incarcerated as a result of this consciously constructed paranoid phobia of pre-emptive (and selective) justice.

And yet, the very men who preach these law and order mantras are the same manipulators who ordered the Kean commission NOT to look for the real culprits of 9/11. They were told to declare at the outset of their so-called deliberations that Arabs in caves did it, that there was plenty of evidence, but that this evidence couldn't be revealed because of national security issues.

This contemporary brand of unconstitutional vigilante justice, a result of this very crime, had recently been legalized when the contrived passage of the Patriot Act destroyed virtually all the Constitutional legal protections Americans had previously enjoyed, including the presumption of innocence, the right to a fair trial, the right to confront one's accusers, and the right to a lawyer.

With the basic freedoms Americans have always counted on lying in tiny pieces in a dumpster in Washington, it was easy — it followed naturally — for President Bush and his snide accomplices to command the panel investigating the crime that was used as a pretense to destroy America's legal system to ignore any pursuit of those who might have been involved in the grand 9/11 deception and simply declare, on the basis of so-called evidence that these crooks themselves provided, that they knew who the guilty parties were. And the panel did just that. You have seen its final report. No one is to blame for 9/11. It's no one's fault. Muslims did it. And that’s that.

Tell it to the 6.7 million people in American jails.

Tell them that a majority of Americans accept the silly notion that 19 Arabs took command of four airliners and killed more than 3,000 people, even though no fewer than eight of these 19 alleged mass murders have been found to be alive — content, breathing and happily living in various countries overseas, and yet the FBI brazenly refuses to revise its list of perpetrators. People serving time for identity theft ought to get a big kick of out that one.

Tell the convicted arsonists you find languishing in the American gulag that jetliner fuel (kerosene) fires can completely demolish three steel-frame skyscrapers in a single day, even though it had never happened before in history to even one building. That ought to light up their day.

Especially tell the thousands of Muslims still incarcerated on bogus charges — possibly some of whom have had relatives blown to bits in Iraq for no other reason than profits for Halliburton and Bechtel — that devout Islamic hijackers always go to strip clubs, snort cocaine, and consort with prostitutes shortly before they kill themselves for Allah in a jihad against those whose freedom they hate.

And for those thugs doing time for battery, tell them the story that five desperadoes with boxcutters (BOXCUTTERS, you know, those little utility knives you use to open UPS packages) paralyzed with fear all the passengers on an airliner (on four different planes!) to the point where the timid travelers were willing to give up their lives because of those little blades. Puh-leeze tell them that!

All right. Enough of that. What an indictment of the American educational system that a majority (apparently) has accepted the clumsy lies mouthed by the neocons and now most people believe the hollow report dutifully churned out by the Kean commission. But plenty of investigative analysts brighter than me have already commented on that.

You know what’s turning out to be the real joke? The inept attempts of so-called 9/11 researchers like me to articulately and convincingly rebuke and disprove propaganda that is so blatantly bogus. After almost three years, and despite the profound clumsiness and transparency of the outright lies that have been told about the reasons for war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the so-called 9/11 truth movement has spectacularly failed to convince the American people their government is lying to them about almost everything, especially everything concerning 9/11.

Sure, most of the researchers are as broke as me, and have had to cobble together their facts and refutations while trying to stay alive and support families. And also for sure, too few people have even attempted to ask the right questions, analyze the false stories, or question the obvious coverups like the carting away of the evidence without proper forensic examination.

Absolutely for sure, no one with any serious money has made an attempt to join the 9/11 truth movement, only tens of thousands of little people, who with ten or a hundred bucks at a time have tried to support those trying to ferret out the real story, the actual facts.

Considering the millions being squandered on that superficial and ultimately meaningless Democratic National Convention this week, we could have predicted the outcome — the coverup always wins, because the coverup always has the real money on its side.

But beyond that traditional excuse, and despite dozens of superlative and heroic efforts by mostly unfinanced individuals — and a few Jews willing to put the spotlight on Israel figure valiantly in this group — the effort to convince the public that 9/11 was an inside job has failed. The malignant media mindlock has prevailed.

With the essentially unopposed publication of the Kean coverup report and those who continue to protest the dishonest superficiality of the major parties locked in cages far from the scenes of so-called democratic debate, the game appears to be over with regard to 9/11, and the U.S. can continue on its path to endless war accompanied by the cheers of just about the entire American population, or so the TV wags would tell us.

The 9/11 truth movement must now be content with rented meeting halls in cheap hotels, just down the hall from the JFK group, to discuss their theories and vent their spleens, as truth and justice are left for dead by the side of the road, just like they always have been throughout American history.

U.S. 'Correctional Population' Hits New
The number of Americans under the control of the criminal justice system grew by 130,700 last year to reach a new high of nearly 6.9 million, according to a Justice Department report released today. The total includes people in jail and prison as well as those on probation and parole. This is about 3.2 percent of the adult population in the United States, the report said. The growth in what the report termed the "correctional population" comes at a time when the crime rate nationwide has been relatively stable for several years. It also comes when many states, faced with budget deficits, have passed new, less strict sentencing laws in an attempt to reduce the number of inmates. (...) The report found that there were 691,301 people in local and county jails and 1,387,269 in state and federal prisons last year, for a total of 2,078,570. That was an increase of 3.9 percent in the jail population and 2.3 percent in the prison population. At the same time, the report said, there were 4,073,987 Americans on probation at the end of last year, an increase of 1.2 percent from the end of 2002, and 774,588 on parole, up 3.1 percent. In general, people on probation have been placed there after being convicted of a crime instead of being sent to jail or prison. People on parole have usually already served prison time and are kept on parole for further supervision. About 41 percent of adults on parole last year were black; 40 percent were white.

Iraqi Woman Recalls Abu Ghraib Rape

CAIRO, July 21 - The rape ordeal she suffered at the hands of US soldiers, both males and females, in the notorious Abu Ghraib prison will continue to haunt Nadia for the rest of her life.

Though freed now, she is "imprisoned" in painful memories that left her psychologically and physically scarred, paying the price of the brutality and sadism of her American jailers.

Nadia, the name given by a freed Iraqi female prisoner to Al-Wasat, a weekly supplement of the respectable London-based Al-Hayat newspaper, felt it incumbent upon herself to speak out and expose the less-talked-about abuse of female prisoners in US-run detention camps across Iraq.

Her visit to a relative ended up in her detention by American troops, who stormed the home under the preferable excuse of "searching for weapons".

"I tried in vain to convince the impeded interpreter I was a guest, but I lost consciousness to find myself later in a dingy dark cell all by myself," Nadia recalled.

With tears rolling down her cheeks, she told the paper how she was stripped by her "liberators" of the most precious thing an Arab and Muslim women can have:

Her virginity.

"A thrill of fear ran through me when I saw US soldiers laughing hysterically with a female soldier telling me mockingly in an Arabic accent 'I never heard about female arms dealer in Iraq'," Nadia said.

"As I tried hard to explain to her that I was wrongly rounded up, the female soldier started accosting and kicking me with my cries and pleas falling on dead ears."

She went on: "She gave me a cup of water and no sooner had I started sipping it than I went into a deep trance to find myself later naked and raped."

'Like Animals'

Only then Nadia realized that hard times and an uncertain fate were lying ahead.

And days proved her right. The other day, five soldiers fondled and raped her one after another in a distasteful sex orgy on the tunes of culturally offensive heavy metal music.

"One month later, a soldier showed up and told me in broken Arabic to take a shower. And before finishing my bath, he kicked the door open. I slapped him but he raped me like animals and called two of his colleagues, who forced me to have sex with them for up to 10 times," added Nadia.

"Four months later, the female soldier came along with four male soldiers with a digital camera. She stripped me naked and started fondling me as if she was a man while her male colleagues broke into laughter and started taking photos.

"Reluctant as I was, she fired four shots close to my head and threatened to kill me if I resist. Then, four soldiers raped me sadistically and I lost conscience. Later, she forced me to watch a clip of my raping, saying bluntly:

'Your were born to give us pleasure'."

Naida was set free from the US hell in Abu Ghraib after spending up to six months there.

The American soldiers dumped her along the highway of Abu Ghraib and gave her a meager of 10,000 dinars to "start a new life".

Too ashamed to return home, she now works as a housemaid for an Iraqi family.

Britain's mass-circulation The Guardian revealed on May 12 that US soldiers in Iraq have sexually humiliated and abused several Iraqi female detainees in Abu Ghraib.

In its May 10-17 issue, the Newsweek said that yet-unreleased Abu Graib abuse photos "include an American soldier having sex with a female Iraqi detainee and American soldiers watching Iraqis have sex with juveniles."

The Iraqi abuse scandal exploded onto the world stage on April 29 after the CBS news network published several shocking photos of Iraqi detainees tortured and sexually abused by US soldiers.

In a damning report presented to the administration in February, before the outbreak of the scandal, US Major General Antonio Taguba found numerous "sadistic, blatant and wanton criminal abuses" at the prison complex.

Teaching Torture: Congress Quietly Keeps School of the Americas Alive

By Doug Ireland - LA Weekly

23 - 29 July Issue

Remember how congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle deplored the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib as "un-American"? Last Thursday, however, the House quietly passed a renewed appropriation that keeps open the U.S.'s most infamous torture-teaching institution, known as the School of the Americas (SOA), where the illegal physical and psychological abuse of prisoners of the kind the world condemned at Abu Ghraib and worse has been routinely taught for years.

A relic of the Cold War, the SOA was originally set up to train military, police and intelligence officers of U.S. allies south of the border in the fight against insurgencies Washington labeled "Communist." In reality, the SOA's graduates have been the shock troops of political repression, propping up a string of dictatorial and repressive regimes favored by the Pentagon.

The interrogation manuals long used at the SOA were made public in May by the National Security Archive, an independent research group, and posted on its Web site after they were declassified following Freedom of Information Act requests by, among others, the Baltimore Sun. In releasing the manuals, the NSA noted that they "describe 'coercive techniques' such as those used to mistreat the detainees at Abu Ghraib."

The Abu Ghraib torture techniques have been field-tested by SOA graduates - seven of the U.S. Army interrogation manuals that were translated into Spanish, used at the SOA's trainings and distributed to our allies, offered instruction on torture, beatings and assassination. As Dr. Miles Schuman, a physician with the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture who has documented torture cases and counseled their victims, graphically wrote in the May 14 Toronto Globe and Mail under the headline "Abu Ghraib: The Rule, Not the Exception":

"The black hood covering the faces of naked prisoners in Abu Ghraib was known as la capuchi in Guatemalan and Salvadoran torture chambers. The metal bed frame to which the naked and hooded detainee was bound in a crucifix position in Abu Ghraib was la cama, named for a former Chilean prisoner who survived the U.S.-installed regime of General Augusto Pinochet. In her case, electrodes were attached to her arms, legs and genitalia, just as they were attached to the Iraqi detainee poised on a box, threatened with electrocution if he fell off. The Iraqi man bound naked on the ground with a leash attached to his neck, held by a smiling young American recruit, reminds me of the son of peasant organizers who recounted his agonizing torture at the hands of the Tonton Macoutes, U.S.-backed dictator John-Claude (Baby Doc) Duvalier's right-hand thugs, in Port-au-Prince in 1984. The very act of photographing those tortured in Abu Ghraib to humiliate and silence parallels the experience of an American missionary, Sister Diana Ortiz," who was tortured and gang-raped repeatedly under supervision by an American in 1989, according to her testimony before the Congressional Human Rights Caucus.

The long history of torture by U.S.-trained thugs in Latin and Central America under the command of SOA graduates has also been capaciously documented by human-rights organizations like Amnesty International (in its 2002 report titled "Unmatched Power, Unmet Principles") and in books like A.J. Langguth's Hidden Terrors, William Blum's Rogue State and Lawrence Weschler's A Miracle, a Universe. In virtually every report on human-rights abuses from Latin America, SOA graduates are prominent. A U.N. Truth Commission report said that over two-thirds of the Salvadoran officers it cites for abuses are SOA graduates. Forty percent of the Cabinet members under three sanguinary Guatemalan dictatorships were SOA graduates. And the list goes on . . .

In 2000, the Pentagon engaged in a smoke-screen attempt to give the SOA a face-lift by changing its name to the Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) as part of a claimed "reform" program. But, as the late GOP Senator Paul Coverdale of Georgia (where SOA-WHINSEC is located) said at the time, the changes to the school were "basically cosmetic."

The lobbying campaign to close SOA-WHINSEC has been led by School of the Americas Watch, founded by religious activists after the 1990s murder of four U.S. nuns by Salvadoran death squads under command of one of SOA's most infamous graduates, Colonel Roberto D'Aubuisson. Lest you think that the school's links to atrocities are all in the distant past, SOA Watch has documented a raft of recent scandals postdating the Pentagon's chimerical "reform." Here are just a few of them:

In June 2001, Colonel Byron Lima Estrada, an SOA grad who was head of Guatemala's bloody D-2 intelligence unit, was convicted of Guatemalan Bishop Gerardi's murder by bludgeoning - two days after the bishop released a report concluding that the army was responsible for a majority of the 200,000 killed in his country's civil war.

In April 2002, two SOA graduates (Army Commander in Chief Efrain Vasquez and General Ramirez Poveda) helped lead a failed coup in Venezuela. The notorious Otto Reich, a failed Bush-administration appointee who sat on the renamed school's Board of Visitors, met with the generals in the months preceding the coup.

In June 2002, Colombian police arrested SOA graduate John Fredy Jimenez for the murder of Archbishop Isaias Duarte in March of that year.

In 2002, Bolivian Captain Filiman Rodriguez took a 49-week officer-training course at WHINSEC. But in 1999, he'd been found responsible for the kidnapping and torture of Waldo Albarracin, then director of the Popular Assembly for Human Rights, by a commission of the Bolivian Chamber of Deputies.

In 2003, Salvadoran Colonel Francisco del Cid Diaz was a student at WHINSEC. But the colonel commanded a unit that shot 16 residents from the Los Hojas cooperative of the Asociacion Nacional de Indígenas and threw their bodies into the river in 1983. In 1992, the OAS Inter-American Commission on Human Rights recommended prosecution of Col. Cid Diaz for the murders.

Representative Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) has spearheaded opposition in the House to SOA-WHINSEC, but his amendment to the Foreign Operations appropriation killing money for the school (which had 128 co-sponsors) was withdrawn at the eleventh hour last week after a bipartisan agreement limited the number of amendments that could come to the House floor. The last chance for killing the school's money this year now rests with the Senate - but when we called Senators Boxer and Feinstein, past SOA critics, to ask them what they planned to do, the response was a deafening silence from their offices. In light of SOA Watch's extensive lobbying, our elected representatives can't claim they don't know of the school's record on torture. So this episode calls to mind Mark Twain's observation that "there is no distinct, native American criminal class - except Congress."

SOA Watch has called a mass vigil/protest for November 19 through 21 at the school's home in Fort Benning, Georgia, expected to be led by Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon and Dead Man Walking author Sister Helen Prejean.

"We won't know peace, as long as our neighbors do not"

[In the following Uri Avnery takes position against those who regard strife among Palestinians as something to be happy about, and clarifies why disintegration of the PA structure and the leadership of Arafat won't bring peace any closer.]

I am writing this with an aching heart. I have postponed writing it as long as I could. In Jewish tradition, there is a searing phrase: "The Temple was not destroyed but for gratuitous hatred." It sums up the events in beleaguered Jerusalem, in the year 70 AD, when the town was surrounded by the Roman legions. While Titus' soldiers were maintaining the siege and the population was beginning to starve, inside the town ferocious battles took place between various factions of zealots, who killed each other and burnt each other's last stores of wheat. Something like this is now taking place in the Palestinian territories.

While the occupation forces are tightening the siege and carrying out "targeted killings", battles between the Palestinians themselves have broken out, with militants shooting at each other, targeting leaders and burning headquarters. Occupation generals, politicians and commentators in Israel follow the events with glee or click their tongues sanctimoniously: "Didn't we tell you? The Palestinians can't rule themselves, there is no one to talk with, we have no partner for peace. When they are left to themselves, anarchy reigns."

On many Israeli tongues the Greek word "chaos" (pronounced with an American accent) was rolling. Since the Sharon government is responsible for the present situation in Gaza in the first place, it resembles the son who kills both his parents and pleads in court: "Have mercy! I am an orphan!" Paradoxically, the Palestinian factions, of all people, seem to believe Sharon's announcement about his intention to leave Gaza.

What is happening there is, first of all, a fight about the skin of the bear that has not yet been caught. Everybody talks about "reforms", a word dear to the Americans, but the battle is about power and control. Muhammad Dahlan's faction hopes to take possession of the Gaza Strip before Sharon's promised withdrawal. Sharon's people are open about their preference for this group. The Americans support them in order to suit Sharon, and the Egyptians support them to please the Americans.

The rival faction supports Mussa Arafat who was sent by his relative, Yasser Arafat, to control the security apparatus. He may not be the most popular appointee, but the leader in far-away Ramallah appointed his most trusted lieutenant in order to fend off the danger he fears most: that the Gaza Strip will cut itself off from the West Bank and become a kind of autonomous Bantustan under Israeli-American-Egyptian tutelage. This is what is happening on the surface.

But the events also have deeper roots in the present Palestinian situation, which consists of an existential contradiction. On the one side, the Palestinian war of liberation is far from over. It is at its height. It can well be said that never has the very existence of the Palestinians - both as a nation and as individuals - been in greater danger than now.

On the other hand, on the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip there has come into being a kind of mini-state that requires a state-like administration: security, economy, education, justice, welfare and so on. The surreal situation in Gaza reflects this contradiction: while Mussa Arafat, Muhammad Dahlan and the other Fatah leaders fight each other for control of the Palestinian Authority and its security organs, a brutal war is going on between the occupation forces and the Tanzim, Hamas and Jihad militants.

The leader of the Palestinian war of liberation is Yasser Arafat. Among the Palestinians, no one contests that. He is the only person able to safeguard the unity of the Palestinian people. He is the only leader with a wide strategic grasp of all the geographic and functional aspects of the dispersed Palestinian people. He has the attributes necessary for a leader in such a situation: an uncontested personal authority, physical courage, the ability to make decisions and a talent for manoeuver. Palestinians call him the 'Father of the Nation" and compare him with George Washington, David Ben-Gurion and Nelson Mandela.

The criticism of Arafat, prevalent mostly among the intellectual and political elite - concerns his functioning as the chief of the "mini-state". Unlike the Prime Minister of Israel, Arafat is not suspected of personal corruption. He is being blamed for the fact that the Palestinian Authority is too much like the other Arab regimes, suffering from concentration of power, proliferation of security apparatuses, corruption, cronyism and the undue influence of big families.

As a Palestinian member of parliament told me recently: "Arafat leads the national struggle, and all of us support him. But he neglects the domestic order, and against that we protest."

However, Sharon is not fighting against Arafat to encourage him to delegate power or because he has seven different security formations (the United States has 15 intelligence agencies, four military services and an untold number of police organizations.) He is fighting against Arafat because his elimination will cause the disintegration of the Palestinian nation into splinters and thus clear the way for ethnic cleansing.

Arafat is very much aware of this danger and, in comparison, all the diseases of the Palestinian Authority seem to him secondary. The strategy of Sharon and his generals is simple and brutal: to destroy the Palestinian Authority, turn life in the occupied territories into hell, disintegrate Palestinian society and drive the survivors from the country, not in one dramatic sweep (as in 1948) but in a slow, continuous, creeping process.

Up to now, this has not succeeded. In spite of inhuman conditions, the Palestinian society has held on in a manner that arouses wonderment. The events of the last few weeks look to Sharon and the army chiefs like signs of collapse. I believe they are wrong and that the Palestinian society will draw back from the abyss.

It is reasonable to expect that the prisoner in the Mukata'ah, who has already led his people out from so many existential crises, will do so again. I sincerely hope so, because Arafat is the only person who can make peace with us. We will know no peace, as long as our neighbors do not.

The refusal epidemic continues to spread: For the first time, a regular service officer refuses service in the Territories

Translated from an article by Osnat Shustak, Ma'ariv 21/7/2004 - not found in the web version.

Second Lieutenant T. a 28-year battalion doctor and regular officer, refused to join his armoured battalion in an incursion into the Gaza Strip - for reasons of conscience. Several weeks ago, battalion 82 of the Seventh Regiment was sent on operation at the town of Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip, aimed at preventing the launch of Quasam rockets at the [Israeli town of] Sderot. T. had previously served in the Territories, and even took part this May in "Operation Rainbow" [including the demolition of houses and the shooting of tank shells at unarmed demonstrators] at the town of Rafah - though already then he expressed reservations about the army's activities in the Gaza Strip.

This time he refused to take part in the operation, stating that taking part in the army's actions in the Territories would contradict the hippocratic oath he swore as a doctor, as well as standing in contrast to the army's own declared values and being detrimental to the state security. Many efforts were made to convince him to recant, but T. stuck to his refusal. Of no avail were the exhortations of his commanding officers, who stated that his job would be to take care of Palestinians as well as fellow soldiers, and that by refusing to join the operation he is putting soldiers' lives in danger. Finding him insistent, T.'s direct commander passed him on to the Seventh Regiment commander, who sentenced T. to 35 days' imprisonment for refusing an order during a military operation. He also told T.: "You are not worthy to be an officer".

It seems that upon being released from his prison term T. will be discharged from service - though the army had paid for his medical studies in the expectation of getting years of service in return. "I regard this very gravely" said Defence Minister Mofaz on Army Radio." There are two highly detrimental aspects to this officer's actions. First, he refused to take part in an action very vital to the security of Israel's citizens, in order to prevent the shooting of rockets at Sderot and its environs.

Also, this officer who is a doctor was unwilling to help soldiers who might be hurt, which is trampling upon the hippocratic oath. I think that the way his commanders dealt with this case is the way to deal with refusers." On the other hand, David Zonshein of the "Courage to Refuse" movement praised the doctor's action: "It is not 'an extremist act', it is a very Zionist act. It is important for the public to know that there are officers who want to serve and love their country, but are opposed to the enormous damage which service in the country is doing to the country. This is the first time that a regular service officer is refusing service in the Territories. I hope and believe that his act has broken a fissure in the consensus and that more officers will now be willing to act for what they believe in - even if they have to pay a personal price".

[N.B. Ma'ariv did not mention to its readers that the Beit Hanoun operation in which Dr. T. refused to take part was about a still ongoing campaign of destruction of Palestinian fields, hothouses and orange groves, demolition of houses and the imposition of a weeks-long siege on Beit Hanoun's 20,000 inhabitants. ]

Subject: Join the Million Faces petition in support of the Control Arms campaign

Dear friends

I'm not usually one for petitions, but I do support this one, and feel it is one of the biggest critical issues around today. I encourage you to join up. This is from Oxfam. With love.

Dear everyone,

Last week's Global Week of Action in support of the Control Arms campaign was a fantastic success. Now we need you to help us make this campaign even bigger!

People in over 45 countries around the world took part in a wide variety of campaigning from collecting photos and self-portraits for the Million Faces petition to crushing and burning guns as part of Gun Destruction day. We are still adding up the amount of people who joined the Million Faces petition during the week of action but initial estimates are that over 10,000 faces were collected, bringing the total up to nearly 200,000.

To see pictures and reports of the campaigning that took place during the week of action, go at,ZchidaidebDG&oid=UdjeaBG&iclitemid=XbfggicaCI&tid=WbhbfhjDA

There are 639 million small arms and light weapons in the world today and eight million more are produced every year. The spread of weapons around the world is fuelling conflict, keeping people in poverty, and denying them their rights.

We are aiming to collect One Million Faces by July 2006 - the time of the next key UN conference on arms controls. In order to do that we need your help. Please forward the email below to your friends, family and colleagues and ask them to join the Million Faces petition via our website

Thanks for all your help.
The Control Arms Campaign Team.

There are 639 million small arms and light weapons in the world today and eight million more are produced every year. The spread of weapons around the world is fuelling conflict, keeping people in poverty, and denying them their rights.

Oxfam, Amnesty International and the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) have launched an international campaign for tough new arms controls. They are calling for a global arms trade treaty, based on international law, to end the abuse and misery caused by arms falling into the wrong hands.

I support this campaign, and I am already one in a million. Please join me. Add your face to the online Million Faces petition too to show your outrage, and to call for tough arms controls. NOW.

And please forward this message to your family and friends. Ask them all to become one in a million too.

U.S. census bureau data shows that the gap between rich and poor families in the U.S. is greater than ever before. At the same time, the rate of childhood obesity is increasing practically as quickly as the national debt. A cross analysis of such data is presented in the 2004 State of the Children report, recently released by the Children's Defense Fund, and unfortunately, the results are downright depressing. For example, increased economic disparity on racial lines means African American infants are currently twice as likely to die in their first year as White infants. Cutbacks in education funding have led to a full 70% fourth graders not being able to read or write at grade level. Weaker gun control laws have resulted in eight children dying from gunfire every day. Interestingly enough, many of these statistics are reminiscent of data coming out of Texas during GW's governorship.

Ten Years of Sanctions & the Depleted Uranium We're Not Meant to Know About

Taken from the British On Target, May, 2004

"United Kingdom journalist and activist Felicity Arbuthnot has visited Iraq on numerous occasions since the 1991 Gulf War. She has written and broadcast widely on Iraq and was also senior researcher for John Pilger's award-winning documentary 'Paying the Price - Killing the Children of Iraq'. She has gone where others fear to tread; on dangerous streets, towns, villages and highways of the Middle East. She is not on the political 'take' such that she prospers, as do many 'talking heads' pontificating from the safety of cities in the West, or under guard in foreign hotels.

As the Coalition bludgeons the ancient cultural structures of the Middle East with an alien western-style 'd'markrazy' on the pretext of 'liberating' the people of the oil-rich Iraq, the destruction, the maiming and loss of lives continues to rise.

Felicity could not help but ask - 'Are these people real?' as she heard Brig- Gen. Mark Kimmit idiotically rambling that the Iraqi people 'will forgive us' for the appalling atrocities - worse, the flagrant cultural humiliation - of the Abu Ghraib prison.

The one element which has fundamentally altered the conduct and course of this present and any future war is the use of nuclear weapons. As the Iraqi people have found out to their utter agony, so will the Coalition of the willing servicemen; that once contaminated by the depleted uranium from the real 'weapons of mass destruction', the territory now held by the victors, is just as dangerous to both victor and vanquished alike.

The pattern of war has changed - forever. Recklessly and unprofessionally, the 'Coalition of the Willing' has flouted the nuclear principle; it has wrought a tragedy that is unfolding for friend and foe alike, as well as innocent civilians, the magnitude of which we are only now becoming aware.

Thirteen Years of Sanctions and the Depleted Uranium: Felicity wrote - When Martii Ahtisarri, then Special Rapporteur to the United Nations, visited Iraq in March 1991, just after the Gulf War, he wrote: "Nothing we heard or wrote could have prepared us for this particular devastation - a country reduced to a pre-industrial age for a considerable time to come."

United Nations reports on Iraq's water, electricity, health care, and education in 1989 described Iraq as near First World standards. The country was regarded as having the most sophisticated medical facilities in the Middle East. The embargo implemented on Hiroshima Day, 1990, to pressure Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait, had an almost instant negative impact.

Iraq imported a broad range of items, 70 percent of everything, from pharmaceuticals to film, educational materials to parts for the electricity grid, water purifying chemicals to everything necessary for waste management; and at the consumer level also, almost everything that a developed society takes for granted was imported.

With all trade denied, the Iraqi dinar (ID), worth US$3 in 1989, became virtually worthless: ID250, formerly US$750 did not even buy a postage stamp in neighbouring Jordan. Staple foods multiplied up to 11,000-fold in price. With no trade, unemployment spiralled, and many, in a country where obesity had been a problem, faced hunger and deprivation. The United States and United Kingdom-driven United Nations sanctions, in fact, mirrored a pitiless Middle Ages siege. With Iraq's withdrawal from Kuwait the embargo should have been lifted, but a further relentless United States and United Kingdom-driven "war of moving goal posts" began, and the majority of children in Iraq - who are fourteen years old now - have never known a normal childhood...

Ten months after the war, I stood in the paediatric intensive care unit of Baghdad's formerly flagship Paediatric Hospital. A young couple stood, faces frozen with terror, as a nurse tried frantically to clear the airway of their perfect, tiny, premature baby. There was no suction equipment.

"It is at a time like this, all your training becomes a reflex action," remarked my companion, Dr. Janet Cameron, from Glasgow, Scotland, "and in a unit like this, you know exactly where everything will be - but there is nothing here."

The fledgling life turned from pink to an ethereal grey, to blue, flickered, and went out.

Hiroshima Day: Since then, over a million lives have gone out due to "embargo related causes", a silent holocaust initiated on Hiroshima Day.

Doctors were remarking in bewilderment at the rise in childhood cancers and in birth deformities, which they were ironically comparing with those they had seen in textbooks after the nuclear testing in the Pacific Islands in the 1950s.

In 1991, only the United States and the United Kingdom's top military planners knew they had used radioactive and chemically toxic depleted uranium (D.U.) weapons against the Iraqis.

Just weeks later, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Agency wrote a "self initiated" report and sent it to the United Kingdom Government, warning that if "fifty tonnes of the residual D.U. dust had been left "in the region" there would, they estimated, be 500,000 extra cancer deaths by the end of the century (the year 2000). The Pentagon eventually admitted to an estimate of 325 tons; some independent analysts estimate as much as 900 tons. Estimates of the added burden of last year's (2003) illegal invasion are that up to a further 2,000 tons of the residual dust remain to poison water, fauna, flora and to be inhaled by the population and the occupiers, causing cancers and genetic mutations in the yet-to-be-conceived.

D.U. remains radioactive for 4,500,000,000 years. Some scientists estimate that it will be poisoning the earth, the unborn, and the newborn "when the sun goes out."

Iraq, the land of ancient Mesopotamia - like Afghanistan and the Balkans - has become a silent potential "Weapons of Mass destruction" for the population and geographical neighbours...

What we sow.... In the West, 70 percent of cancers are now largely curable or with long remissions. In Iraq they are almost always a death sentence. On another early visit after the war, I went to a ward where just two small boys, aged three and five, lay alone, in an attempt to isolate them. They had acute myeloid leukemia and hopelessly compromised immune systems, rendering them vulnerable to any infection. The three-year-old, whose name translated as "the Vital one", was covered with bruises from the leaking capillaries bleeding internally and rigid with pain.

There was not even an aspirin available. His eyes were full of unshed tears and I realised he had taught himself not to cry - sobs would rack his agonised little body further. Leaving, I stooped to stroke the face of the five-year- old, who was in an identical condition. In a gesture that must have cost more than could be imagined, he reached and clutched my hand tightly, as do children everywhere, responding to affection.

I left the ward, leaned against a wall and prayed that the ground would open up and swallow me. I wrote at the time, "I now know it is actually possible to die of shame."

Editor's comment: I try to imagine how these war planners look on the people whom they are about to order to be bombed, strafed, maimed or killed; their houses destroyed and their livelihood taken away from them, thus reducing them to starvation level. What about the 'holier than thou' attitudes of such people as those who imposed the ten years of sanctions on the people knowing there would be such horrendous effects.

Do the war planners see these people as their fellow human beings - or do they see them as merely 'cattle' - their lives of no consequence whatsoever.

John Howard has not uttered one single public word of regret at what his government has been a party to in Iraq. What on earth makes that man 'tick'? I can understand a people fighting for their homeland if it was threatened by invasion and occupation, even coming to the help of another friendly nation under threat. I cannot understand the double standard displayed by the sanctimonious leaders of the western world who continue to claim 'the high moral ground' in this war of aggression, and the horrendous 'legacy' of contaminated environment and soil they have left the people of that sad land - for how many years to come?
