Iron Curtain of Secrecy as Cheney Leads Bush to 9/11 Hearing (April 29)
Washington (Reuters) - The White House said on Tuesday it would not allow any recordings or transcripts of private testimony this week by President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney to the panel investigating the Sept. 11 attacks. Rebuffing demands from families of some of the nearly 3,000 dead and other critics of the administration for public testimony, Bush and Cheney only agreed to Thursday's unprecedented interview under pressure and on the grounds they would appear together and behind closed doors.

Heavy US air, ground forces pound Falluja (28 April 2004)
Fierce fighting has erupted in the restive Iraqi city of Falluja as US occupation forces strike the town with warplanes, helicopter gunships, mortar bombs and tanks. Live footage beamed on Aljazeera showed the night sky incessantly lit up as strike after strike hit mainly the Golan district of the city on Tuesday. Aljazeera's correspondent reported a heavy exchange of gunfire was also heard and several homes were on fire. Amidst the explosions, Quranic recital could be heard over the mosque's loudspeaker, as a reminder to people to remember God at this time, the correspondent said. He added that US marines are not only attacking from the air with helicopter gunships and warplanes, but ground troops are using machine guns and tanks as well. There are reports that an AC-130 gunship aircraft fired multiple cannon rounds over the city. One report said the gunship fired 20 to 25 rounds at a time with explosions on the ground sending showers of sparks and flames into the night sky. "I can hear more than 10 explosions a minute. Fires are lighting the night sky," one witness told Reuters. "The earth is shaking under my feet." The fighting came hours after a US deadline for fighters in the city of 300,000 to hand over their weapons. More than 600 people have been killed since US marines besieged the city on 5 April. - Check also the Flag Raisers cartoons at the bottom of

Huge U.S. Attack to Crush Iraq Rebels (28 April 2004),2763,1204966,00.html
It was easy to spot the site that bore the brunt of American firepower. The scattered bricks, the gaping hole in the wall, the observation tower perforated by bullets - fired by the American tank that rolled insouciantly down the avenue of date palms and eucalyptus trees. And the fighters sweeping up the debris, untroubled by their battle with the world's most powerful army, were even claiming victory despite heavy losses. This was the scene yesterday at the checkpoint leading into Kufa, the town next to the Shia holy city of Najaf, after an intense battle on Monday night that signalled renewed US resolve to take on its foes in Iraq. Last night it was the turn of Falluja, centre of Sunni resistance to the coalition, as US aircraft and artillery pounded targets in the heaviest assaults in the city since a fragile truce took hold. Explosions and showers of sparks lit up the sky as US firepower homed in on what the military said was a hard core of resistance in the city's Golan district. CLIP

Washington Unleashes Bloodbath in Iraq (28 Apr 2004)
With thousands of troops massed outside the besieged cities of Fallujah in central Iraq and Najaf in the south, the Bush administration has unleashed a bloodbath against the Iraqi people. In Fallujah, US forces on Tuesday escalated their attack, with AC-130 gunships firing cannon rounds into crowded residential areas. The city was also pounded by fire from helicopter gunships, jet fighters, tanks and machine guns. In one instance, tank fire was used to topple the minaret of a local mosque. Marines reportedly closed the last entrance to Fallujah, barring any more of the residents who had fled earlier fighting from returning to their homes. The action was seen by observers as the prelude to the renewal of a full-scale assault on the city of 300,000, which has been a center of resistance to the US occupation. One Marine commander referred to the city-comparable in size to Birmingham, Alabama or Newark, New Jersey-as a "huge rats' nest." In Najaf, Pentagon officials claimed Tuesday that US occupation forces killed scores of members of the Mahdi Army, a militia loyal to Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr. Missile-firing helicopter gunships were called in to mow down some 60 militiamen, according to US officials. Local hospital staff, however, reported that the casualties included unarmed civilians. It was also reported that US troops had seized a major hospital and were denying access or supplies to those seeking to treat wounded Iraqis. In the aftermath of the clash, throngs of Najaf residents carried the coffins of seven of the slain fighters through the streets, vowing to resist any attempt by US forces to take control of the city. "We're going to drive this guy into the dirt," a commanding officer of the US 1st Armored Division said of Sadr. What is being prepared is a wave of mass killing aimed at terrorizing the Iraqi people into accepting the continued occupation of their country by the US military. Lacking anywhere near the forces necessary to police a country of 25 million people, Washington is determined to make an example out of Fallujah and Sadr's movement, much in the same fashion that the Nazi occupiers of World War II Europe leveled the Czech town of Lidice and razed the Warsaw ghetto. Given the sadism and backwardness of the occupant of the White House, who is said to be making the ultimate decisions on the two sieges, the looming assaults are no doubt also driven by a thirst for revenge. Since the beginning of April, 122 US troops have lost their lives in combat. During the same period, ten times as many Iraqis have been killed, many of them women and children. Laying siege to cities, attacking hospitals and mosques, denying medical care, food and other essential services to entire civilian populations and imprisoning close to 20,000 Iraqis without charges or hearings are all war crimes, and they are being carried out in the name of the American people. CLIP

Falluja, Najaf and the First Law of Holes (26 April 2004)
(...) American forces attack Falluja, and become ensconced in a brutal street-to-street fight within the confines of that maze-like city. 300,000 civilians will be caught in the crossfire, and the resulting carnage will enflame the Iraqi people to a degree not yet seen. American forces will absorb brutal casualties. If the U.S. decides to avoid troop casualties by bombing Falluja in a repeat of Shock and Awe, the loss of civilian life will be beyond severe. Simultaneously, American forces attack Najaf, a holy city central to the spiritual lives of millions of Shi'ites around the world. An explosion of rage will engulf the Middle East. Iran, which has something resembling a real army, could very well drive across the border to engage American forces that are already stretched. This war, already a ridiculous mess, will become an unmitigated catastrophe. Anyone who thinks Iraq is a bad situation now should reserve judgment until the end of this week. George W. Bush and his crew have clearly forgotten the First Law of Holes: When you find yourself deep in a hole, stop digging. If this is what Bush meant when he talked about "changing the world" in his recent prime-time press conference, we are all in a great deal of trouble.

Eyewitnesses Claim Drugged US Troops Laughing In Battle (4-27-2004)
Mafkarat al-Islam's correspondent in al-Fallujah reports that for more than 10 days the Resistance fighters in the besieged city have been remarking about a phenomenon that they find strange and surprising. Resistance fighters have frequently noticed that many of the American aggressor troops are laughing as they storm into districts in al-Fallujah. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent personally witnessed this clearly when he was close to the events as US aggressors tried to storm an-Nizal neighborhood in the besieged city on Saturday. The correspondent wrote that he saw two American soldiers laughing, such as to arouse pity for them, despite all the Resistance gunfire being poured at their position and their comrades dying around them. Both of the Americans were later killed in the battle. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent writes that the Resistance learned later from interrogations of captured American Marines that the US military medical service distributes a type of halucinogenic pill to the troops that prompts laughter and reduces the sense of fear in combat conditions. The reverse situation has been revealed in the despair and terror exhibited by the US troops when their lines of supply of food and medicine have been cut - a phenomenon that has been witnessed by nearby Resistance fighters. Attacks halt rebuilding of Iraq Disaster facing power network as contractors pull out (April 27, 2004),2763,1204230,00.html
Vital reconstruction work in Iraq has almost completely ground to a halt after being "screwed up" by the deteriorating security situation in the country, senior coalition officials have told the Guardian. Unless the situation improves dramatically in the next few weeks, essential work on the electricity network will not be complete before the extreme heat of the summer arrives, raising the prospect of months of power cuts similar to those that led to riots and widespread discontent last year, the officials warned. "It is screwing up the timetables completely, so for things like electricity, essential work that should have been done over the last three or four weeks has not been done," one senior official said. "We are at risk of moving into the summer period with the repairs not complete, which means we are going to have massive demand and not very good provision. So from that point of view, it is a disaster." The warnings came as it emerged that the insurgency has forced two of the biggest contractors, General Electric and Siemens, to suspend operations in Iraq. Siemens has been involved in attempts to restore the Daura power plant in Baghdad, listed by USAID, the development agency, as being one of the most important electrical projects in the country. The security problems are delaying work on about two dozen power plants, as well as a number of large-scale water and sewage treatment projects across Iraq.

What Do We Do Now?
It seems very hard for some people--especially those in high places, but also those striving for high places--to grasp a simple truth: The United States does not belong in Iraq. It is not our country. Our presence is causing death, suffering, destruction, and so large sections of the population are rising against us. Our military is then reacting with indiscriminate force, bombing and shooting and rounding up people simply on "suspicion." Amnesty International, a year after the invasion, reported: "Scores of unarmed people have been killed due to excessive or unnecessary use of lethal force by coalition forces during public demonstrations, at checkpoints, and in house raids. Thousands of people have been detained [estimates range from 8,500 to 15,000], often under harsh conditions, and subjected to prolonged and often unacknowledged detention. Many have been tortured or ill-treated, and some have died in custody." CLIP

Food Prices Rising - Decades of Environmental Neglect Shrinking Harvests in Key Countries by Lester R. Brown (April 28, 2004)
When this year's grain harvest begins in May, world grain stocks will be down to 59 days of consumption--the lowest level in 30 years. The last time stocks were this low, in 1972-74, wheat and rice prices doubled. A politics of scarcity emerged with exporting countries, such as the United States, restricting exports and using food for political leverage. Hundreds of thousands of people in food-short countries, including Ethiopia and Bangladesh, died of hunger. Now, a generation later, a similar scenario is unfolding, but for different reasons. After nearly tripling from 1950 to 1996, growth in the world grain harvest came to a halt. In each of the last four years world grain production has fallen short of consumption, forcing a drawdown of stocks. During this period, expanding deserts, falling water tables, crop-withering temperatures, and other environmental trends have largely offset the positive contributions of advancing technology and additional investment in agriculture. (...) In 2002 record heat and drought combined to shrink harvests in both India and the United States. Record and near-record temperatures in key food-producing countries accounted for a large share of the record world grain shortfalls of 91 million tons in 2002 and 105 million tons in 2003. The question now is whether farmers can expand the grain harvest this year enough to eliminate the huge deficit of last year. Unfortunately there are no efforts underway that are sufficient to reverse the expansion of deserts, the fall in water tables, or the rise in temperatures that are shrinking harvests in key countries. In the absence of such an effort, food prices are likely to continue rising.

Upcoming Climate-Change Disaster Movie Provokes Silliness (25 Apr 2004)
"The Day After Tomorrow," a big-budget climate-change disaster flick directed by Roland Emmerich (creator of such visionary fare as "Independence Day" and the 1998 "Godzilla" remake), is due for release on May 28, and it's got folks on both sides of the global-warming debate all atwitter. Fearing that the scenario in the movie -- wherein climate change, to the dismay of some Cheney-esque politicians, all of a sudden causes blizzards, tsunamis, and much bad acting -- might provoke a panicked public to question why the Bush administration isn't doing more to address climate change, the top press officer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center sent an email on April 1 to several agency scientists and officers forbidding them to discuss the movie with the press. A scientist offended at being muzzled promptly leaked the email to The New York Times, making the agency look silly. NASA backpedaled last week, saying its scientists are free to discuss the film if asked to do so. Meanwhile, some enviros are fretting that the movie's absurd premise will discredit climate-change science altogether.

Ford Unveils New Green Assembly Plant
On the site of its nearly 90-year-old Rouge manufacturing complex, where workers once assembled Model A's, Ford Motor Co. yesterday unveiled its new Dearborn Truck Plant, touted as a model of 21st-century, eco-friendly manufacturing. The multibillion-dollar plant is chockablock with innovative features. A 10-acre "living roof" covered in sedum grass, a porous-paved parking lot, and human-made swales all reduce storm-water runoff, saving on sewer-building expenses. The grass roof also insulates the factory, reducing heating and cooling costs, while 36 skylights and 10 glass-walled rooftop window boxes direct sunlight to workers on the floor. A system distills paint fumes into hydrogen-rich gas, which powers fuel cells expected to save Ford some $100,000 a year in electricity costs. Green spaces and wildlife refuges surround the facility. CEO Bill Ford promised to roll the concepts out to all of Ford's plants if they "play out from an economic standpoint, and we believe they will." If only the trucks rolling off the assembly line were so green ...

"They" can get away with this because "they" think they run the show... What they don't realize is that "they" will get their just rewards in the end. We each have a responsibility and a part to play. There is a divine order to things, but it is intertwined with free will.

What November elections?? What democracy?? Haven't you heard they have the voting machines rigged?? That's just like protestors in the US feeling they've done their part by marching around for a day, going home in their SUV's to their cushy house w/3 car garage, keeping an eye on their stock options. Maybe they'll even stop by a buffet place on their way home, load up their plate and throw half of it away, just because they can.

Many are called, few are chosen. Each of us needs to do what we can, but I think we must also realize we're surrounded by greedy material gluttons. As I've said before, our big mac appetites will certainly lead to a massive coronary. Then they'll wander around exclaiming "what happened?"

A massive boycott of everything American won't do any good because they own most of the rest of the world. They think money is the answer to everything, and having money will allow them to commit the most obscene deeds without much disapproval. What they don't realize is when you build on a lie, the lie will ALWAYS come crashing down. Meanwhile, their sanctimonious piousness will also come back to bite them. Until then we all need each other to support. Buy local. Consume local. Network. Do all you can to help all you can (BTW, Jimmy Carter said that...).

Someone once said that it is darkest before the dawn and according to many sources, the dawn will be breaking soon.

Unfortunately, I don't think things will be turning around on their own in an orderly and controlled way. It won't come from elections or boycotts. We are too far down the path of no return to expect change from within. Left to our own devices, at the current rate it will be centuries and many more generations before the human species will evolve spiritually into something sustainable without the tendency to destroy itself. But we will not survive that long without external intervention.

There needs to be a "cleaning of the slate" and all indications are that it is on the way. What form it will take is still uncertain. Indications are that it will be very painful and disruptive, but at the soul level, very necessary. Every recent prognostication points to the year 2012 as the time for this change.

Yes, everything IS in divine order and all necessary actions and commitments have already been set in motion to ensure the victory of Light, Love and Peace.

AND We are those actions and commitments. A MASSIVE GLOBAL MOBILIZATION AND BOYCOTT OF EVERYTHING AMERICAN IS LOVE IN ACTION. LOVE FOR OURSELVES. LOVE FOR ALL EARTH AND HER SPECIES. LOVE IN ACTION BRINGS THE DIVINE TO LIFE, IN FULL VIEW OF THE WORLD. LOVE IN ACTION MAKES CLEAR OUR WILLINGNESS TO PARTICIPATE IN CREATING THE CHANGE OUR HEARTS DESIRE. We can begin with America but we must continue and maintain our organized focus until we get to the core. All our countries are puppets to the corporations which have the agenda to destroy and control. Starting with America, we can peel back the layers.

Thank you for all the wonderful work you do to keep us informed and feeling the world in which we live.

Dear Jean,

I just received a piece that you sent out (I think) from Move On about how Kerry really was a war hero. Truly pathetic, if that's what advanced thinking about the US elections has now come to.

There should be a boycott of the US election. The fact that Bush is now adopting Kerry's program shows that these elections are a dead end. A Nader protest vote is ineffective given the fact that he does not have the substantial support of a political party and so a fair presence in the debate.

Better not to vote at all, and say so, as the choice between Kerry and Bush is merely a choice between the sKull and the Bones.

This is what the majority of ordinary people will tend to do anyway--just not bother to vote. There should be leadership to give meaning to this natural response to the mediocrity of the choice produced by a decrepit political system.

There are two fundamental principles involved there: 1) There is no democratic choice between members of a secret society which has political objectives. 2) There is no democratic choice if there are any states in which there is no way for neutral observers to objectively verify the vote.

I disagree with the either/or formulation of your question. The divine order includes our own responses, evaluations and actions. We are seeing the demise of a political system. Let's expose the skull and bones of this to the light as best as we can.

All the best,

Jim Lawler

Dear Jean,

I'm a thankful and faithful reader of your excellent melting pot site and I can't resist answering you on this one.

I'm afraid this is the crux of the whole matter!!! When you are deeply immersed in the vast universe of knowledge and communication from all the different sources, channelled or not, of the kind that we are dealing with in a website like yours, you HAVE TO BELIEVE IT'S ALL BEING TAKEN CARE OF AND THAT WE CAN'T TAKE ACTION OF ANY PRAGMATIC NATURE OURSELVES, SINCE THERE ARE GUYS LIKE ASHTAR, ST. Congressional Hearing Requested for Area 51 Microbiologist

Senator Hatch, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, has been approached about giving Dr. Dan Burisch a hearing regarding designer viruses, extraterrestrial interaction and treaties.

Dan Burisch, a Ph.D. microbiologist presently in lock-down in Area 51 related black ops, who has expressed willingness to testify publicly, is one step closer to getting immunity and the Congressional hearing he seeks. Harry Dschaak and Sterling Allan, who met with Dr. Burisch on April 5 via an insider-invited breach of his lock-down status, traveled by car across the country to Washington D.C. and presented his case to several members of Congress two weeks later on April 19, 2004.

According to an earlier report about his readiness to disclose upon receiving immunity, Dr. Burisch has said he will answer all questions put to him if subpoenaed to do so.

Dschaak (pronounced DeeShock) and Allan focused their efforts on the office of Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah because of his position as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. They also visited with the staff of other Senate members from Idaho, Utah, and Nevada, where Dschaak, Allan, and Dr. Burisch reside, respectively.

A Hatch staff member who met with Dschaak and Allan to be briefed on the matter, said this case would likely fall under the Select Committee on Security. Notwithstanding a full schedule, Senator Hatch did offer the courtesy of a quick stop in the conference room where the briefing took place.

The staff member informed Dschaak and Allan that there are thousands of cases vying to be brought into a Congressional hearing.

Allan said that this issue regarding Dr. Burisch is being watched by thousands worldwide and that he would be glad to commence a petition effort if that could help demonstrate the mandate that is behind this matter. Allan's petition basically offers people an opportunity to voice their support of subpoenaing Dr. Burisch for a Congressional hearing or other appropriate deposition.

The Burisch deposition would include producing evidence of deadly virus design, with a signature genetic sequence included that could unobtrusively prove the laboratory origin of the virus. These organisms are similar to HIV and SARS, which researchers such as Len Horowitz, M.D., have documented as having man-made, laboratory origins.

The testimony would also include a report of approximate one year period of time in which he was assigned to work on a living extraterrestrial being who offered himself as part of an agreed-upon exchange at S4 of Area 51 north of Las Vegas, NV.

He can also testify of human subjects he heard who were/are being held at S4 and being treated as laboratory animals against their will.

He also claims to have first-hand experience with working stargates. What form the evidence for such would take is yet to be determined.

Dr. Burisch also claims to be privy to work being done to capture the genetic components of an extraterrestrial disease and insert that into microbial vectors that can target human beings, which Dschaak compares to creating a Cholora-like epidemic of a deadly disease for which there is no previous immunity developed.

Perhaps the most crucial part of his testimony would regard his knowledge of a purported tau-IX treaty that exists between certain Extraterrestrial groups and a group of powerful, international, racist, elitist humans. This cabal has allegedly been using their tight control of Extraterrestrial information over the past half a century as a means of exerting extant control over affairs on earth, from government, to energy, to technology, and healing. Meanwhile, they mainly withhold these technological advances from the lay populous while personally benefiting from these things themselves. The treaty also purportedly provides allowances for transitive human abductions.

A professional investigative reporter, Linda Moulten Howe, in reporting on April 19 on the Dan Burisch situation among other secret ops relating to extraterrestrials, gave evidence that the secrecy was first put in place by President Harry Truman. This arose out of what could be considered to be benign intentions of shielding the lay public from what to him was a shocking situation in order to avoid mass hysteria and panic. From that time, the official stance of the U.S. government was to deny any involvement with or knowledge of Extraterrestrial beings. She argues that while some information may yet merit secrecy for purposes of national security because of its military implications, that world should at least be brought into knowledge of the general case of extraterrestrial interaction with earth.

Another researcher who has been reporting recently about Dr. Burisch, and received a dialogue communication as recently as April 16, is Michael E. Salla, Ph.D. He purports that there are many alien races that have visited or who now are occupants upon the earth. He wanted to know from Dr. Burisch if he had interaction with more than one species. Dr. Burisch reported that he had only interacted with one race, which was a type of a Gray called a J-rod; and believed there were three in all: two males and one female, the latter of which was allowed to return from whence she came. The males expired.

A research group, headed by Robert Wood, Ph.D., who is involved in proving the authenticity of some original MJ-12 (extraterrestrial- secret controllers) documents are presently now focusing on a recently recovered (was shredded) document that alleges to be communications between a present major world leader and Dr. Dan Burisch.

Though Dr. Burisch is now in even more stringent lock-down, with tight security around him, he has superiors on the inside who are in favor of disclosure. Back-door communications are still taking place. Allan predicts that the handlers will facilitate access to Dr. Burisch at such time as a subpoena may be produced for him to testify before Congress or other appropriate bodies.

According to Stephen Greer, M.D., head of the Disclosure Project, the case for secrecy is beginning to melt, as thousands of material witnesses are beginning to step forward. These include individuals from within the U.S. government including the military, CIA, FBI. Greer sees the Burisch case as a likely poster child case for the many scientists and operatives who have been involved in various facets of this 'kleptocracy', as he calls it. Greer asserts that this elitist clique does not want disclosure because the spin-off technologies that will be made available to the world will result in their loss of control because of the level of empowerment it will afford the lay citizen. 'Each home could have its own power generation system that taps into the sea of energy that surrounds us. The problem of world hunger could be solved within ten years.'

Underlying all these researchers is a volunteer team of amateur researchers who have been following the Burisch story and who have been receiving a significant volume of insider-leaked covert communications with the intent of disclosure. Their forum, has recently become subject to junk message attacks to overwhelm legitimate messages.

Dschaak believes that the reason Dr. Burisch is being protected from being mortally terminated, despite his past disclosures and his intended future disclosures, which usually result in an untimely death sentence of the person making such sensitive disclosures, is because he is in process of developing technologies for those on the inside, which he alone is capable of furthering at this time. Dr. Burisch wants to make sure that these technologies are made available for peaceful purposes, and not for the furtherance of oppression.

Allan speculates that if they have their way, the elitists on the inside, who are working with a darker agenda-holding faction of extraterrestrial, would inoculate themselves with this particle of life and then eradicate billions of non-immune humans using the super disease.

The thrust of Dr. Burisch's present project, the Lotus Project, involves a "Ganesh Particle" that holds promise for being able to efficiently heal damaged cells and tissue -a "fountain of youth" kind of technology. According to Dschaak, "Dr. Burisch has said that he has until March 15, 2005 to present a written paper fully describing this technology to those who are his handlers, who in turn begrudgingly answer to a shadowy elitist group, who allegedly have ties to a less benevolent faction of Extraterrestrial beings." Dr. Burisch's handlers are former members of the Committee of the Majority, who Dan refers to as Maji.

Allan and Dschaak reported to Senator Hatch's staff member that the window of time for calling a Congressional hearing for Dr. Burisch is therefore short. Many who have followed the secrecy behind the extraterrestrial question for the past half century posit that time is drawing near a critical point of no return if disclosure does not take place. Greer compares this to the "D-1" stage of take-off for an airplane. "You reach a point in which you either take off, or you crash off the end of the runway."

Dr. Burisch has already disclosed volumes of information. Video interviews with him are available, such as a 68-minute interview he did with Bill Hamilton on Sept. 18, 2002. Another, more professional video interview with Dr. Burisch by a former Fox news cameraman is in process of being released,

But there is some information that Dr. Burisch does not wish to disclose until he receives immunity. While he believes he can explain how in his mind he was justified in participating in these projects, he thinks that others might be quick to point an accusing finger, possibly wanting to charge him with war crimes. Until he can be protected from such charges, he does not wish to disclose certain of the facts he has at his disposal. Furthermore, he also does not wish to trample the oaths he is under; and a subpoena would provide him legal grounds to speak freely, which he has repeatedly stated to be his desire.

He is not worried about death. Dschaak observes that Dr. Burisch faced the likelihood of an untimely death a long time ago and has made peace with his maker.

We already have a wealth of information from the testimonies that have been given by Dr. Burisch. He apparently wants to be able to get these other things out in the open as well.

The Bush Administration knows about the health and the environmental consequences of using depleted uranium but it doesn't care.

By Mick Youther

When I first heard the term "depleted uranium", I thought it must be uranium after the radioactivity was gone. I was wrong.

- "Depleted uranium (DU) is the highly toxic and radioactive byproduct of the uranium enrichment process.... Depleted uranium is roughly 60% as radioactive as naturally occurring uranium, and has a half life of 4.5 billion years. As a result of 50 years of enriching uranium for use in nuclear weapons and reactors, the U.S. has in excess of 1.1 billion pounds of DU waste material."-- Dan Fahey, "Metal of Dishonor" (1997)

- "More ordinance was rained down on Iraq during the six weeks of the Gulf War than during the whole of the Second World War. Unknown to the public or the Allied troops at the time, much of it was coated with depleted uranium (DU)"-- Felicity Arbuthnot, New Internationalist, September 1999

- "The Pentagon and the United Nations estimate that the U.S. and Britain used 1,100 to 2,200 tons of armor-piercing shells made of depleted uranium during attacks on Iraq in March and April [2003]--far more than the 375 tons used in the 1991 Gulf War."-- Seattle Post Intelligencer, 8/4/03

- "Since the U.S. military's widespread use of DU in the Gulf became known in 1991, the Pentagon has struggled to suppress mounting evidence that DU munitions are simply too toxic to use. It has cashiered or attempted to discredit its own experts, ignored their advice, impeded scientific research into DU's health effects and assembled a disinformation campaign to confuse the issue."-- Environmental Magazine, May/Jun 2003

- "When I spoke out within the military about how bad [depleted uranium] was, my life ended, my career ended. I received threats, warnings, sent to the reserve from full active duty."-- Dr. Doug Rokke, former Army Major, who was in charge of the military's environmental clean-up following the first Gulf War, ABC News, 5/5/03 (Thirty members of Rokke‚s cleanup team have already died, and he has 5,000 times the acceptable level of radiation in his body, resulting in damage to his lungs and kidneys, brain lesions, skin pustules, chronic fatigue, continual wheezing and painful fibromyalgia. After the Gulf War, Rokke was assigned to make a training video to teach soldiers how to handle depleted uranium. It was a never shown to the troops.)

- "...General Calvin Waller told NBC's ŒDateline‚ that neither he nor General Norman Schwartzkopf were ever told about the health hazards of DU."-- Military Toxics Project's Depleted Uranium Citizens' Network, 1/16/96

- "Military men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy."-- Henry Kissinger, quoted by Bob Woodward in "The Final Days" (1976)

- "Our studies indicate that more than forty percent of the population around Basra will get cancer. We are living through another Hiroshima"-- Dr. Jawad Al-Ali, an oncologist and member England's Royal Society of Physicians, quoted by, 5/15/03

- "The leukemia rate in Sarajevo, pummeled by American bombs in 1996, has tripled in the last five years. But it's not just the Serbs who are ill and dying. NATO and UN peacekeepers in the region are also coming down with cancer."-- Baltimore Chronicle, 12/5/01

- "Drought-stricken Afghanistan's underground water supply is now contaminated by these nuclear weapons. Experts with the Uranium Medical Research Center report that urine samples of Afghanis show the highest level of uranium ever recorded in a civilian population."-- Amy Worthington, Idaho Observer, April 2003

- "By now, half of all the 697,000 U.S. soldiers involved in the 1991 war have reported serious illnesses. According to the American Gulf War Veterans Association, more than 30 percent of these soldiers are chronically ill and are receiving disability benefits from the Veterans Administration."-- Sara Flounders and John Catalinotto, Swans Commentary, 2/2/04

- "Gulf War Syndrome not only killed, maimed, and made soldiers sick, they brought it home. In a study of 251 Gulf War veterans' families in Mississippi, 67 percent of their children were born without eyes, ears or a brain, had fused fingers, blood infections, respiratory problems or thyroid and other organ malformations."-- Leuren Moret, environmental geologist, San Francisco Bay View, 11/7/01

- "In America, war means money - lots of it - and to the corporations which profit from war, our soldiers are nothing more than an expendable item. The Pentagon and the military corporations clearly consider contamination of their own soldiers as an acceptable cost."-- S.R. Shearer, The End Times Network, 5/10/99

How can we do this to our soldiers, their families and the other victims of war? How can anyone think this is a good idea?

Power of Music Part 2: Dr. Emoto's Hidden Messages in Water
April 25 2004
Contributed by: cranky crow (alias Patty-Lynne Herlevi)

We live in revolutionary times and radical change creates discomfort. Our ancestors most likely didn't readily accept that the world was round after centuries of believing that it was flat. Today's equivalent of this type of radical thought can be found within the field of quantum physics. What if we are simply energy, vibrations and that we experience as solid and grounded is actually energy as well? What if we do create our own reality through our beliefs, which we rarely questions any longer? What if water has consciousness and what if water could record our thoughts through our vibrations? And if we go even deeper into this cosmic ocean, what if each individual has the power and the responsibility to create the world around them? Wouldn't that mean, that we need to become conscious of our thoughts and whether those thoughts create peace or feed the fire of destruction? And what would happen if musicians became more aware of the musically energy they release out into the vast universe?

Quantum physicists weren't the first humans to discover that the world is made up of vibrations. The ancient shamans/sorcerers could bend time, (soul) travel through multiple dimensions and speak of mental constructs that would easily blow the average person's mind. (Today, they still can). When an initiate underwent a death-rebirth process, they were actually facing the death of old reality. Facing symbolic death is as frightening as facing physical death. An initiate might feel that the ground they once walked has disappeared from beneath their feet. They might believe up is down and down is up. Certainly they wouldn't be seen as sane by an uninitiated person. The revolution that is surfacing on the planet at this time represents symbolic death on a grand scale. Many of us are seeing the world contrary to what we've been taught. But isn't it better to see ourselves as co-creators of reality? Isn't it better to become conscious of the energy we are releasing into the world through our music or our emotions? And isn't it time to focus on the task at hand, ushering lasting global peace? And what is the role of sensitive people and musicians? Incidentally in the field of metaphysics emotions are tied in with the water element.

Revolutionary times call for visionaries to reveal the mysteries of life. Internationally renowned researcher Dr. Masaru Emoto has gained worldwide acclaim by revealing the connection between water and the collective consciousness. Dr. Emoto's research with water crystals began with a thought and an open-heart. He explains the origins of his profound research in his latest book, The Hidden Messages in Water, "One day I casually opened a book to words that jumped off the page: 'No two snow crystals are exactly the same.'"

After pondering the significance of this sentence which only seemed elementary on the surface, Dr. Emoto considered that for millions of years all the snowflakes that have fallen onto the earth have been different. "The next moment I thought, If I freeze water and look at the crystals, each one will be totally unique. And that moment marked my first step on an adventure into a new and unexplored world." And one that would alter anyone who comes into contact with Dr. Emoto's research view on human consciousness.

Over time and after much effort, Dr. Emoto devised a method using high speed photography to capture frozen water crystals. The fact that crystals form in water attests to the presence of healthy energy. Polluted and chlorine-treated water revealed no crystals. When destructive words were either spoken to or typed on a piece of paper and taped to bottles filled with water either no crystals formed or the ones that did were clearly distorted. While Dr. Emoto's research delves into a variety of areas from water purification, to quantum physics, the use of prayer to purify water, this article will only focus on his research involving the energies found in different types of music. And since words, accompany music in many traditions, I will also touch upon Dr. Emoto's research involving words. However, I highly recommend reading The Hidden Messages in Water as a means of putting his findings with music in context with the research as a whole.

In the prologue of his book, The Hidden Messages in Water, Dr. Emoto explains how the experiment with music began. The researchers would place bottles of water between two speakers while playing music at the volume humans would normally listen to music. They also used the same water from other experiments. They tried distilled water from a drug store. When researching the effects of classical music on water, Dr. Emoto and the researchers were astounded with the results. "Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, with its bright clear tones, resulted in beautifully and well-formed crystals. Mozart's 40th Symphony, a graceful prayer of beauty, created crystals that were delicate and elegant…

All the classical music that we exposed the water to resulted in well-formed crystals with distinct characteristics. In contrast, the water exposed to violent heavy-metal music resulted in fragmented and malformed crystals at best."

With the success of the music experiment, the researchers experimented with words. Researchers typed words such as "thank you" and "fool" on pieces of paper that they wrapped around the bottles. The result was that "thank you" formed beautiful hexagonal crystals and the water exposed to "fool" produced malformed crystals similar to water exposed to heavy-metal music. Many metaphysicians and scientific researchers have concluded that our words contain energies that vibrate at different frequencies. Dr. Emoto's research gives us visual proof of the effect of our words on us and the planet.

The Japanese have a unique view of the power of words. Dr. Emoto explains this in The Hidden Messages in Water. "In Japan, it is said that words of the soul reside in a spirit called Kotodama or the spirit of words, and the act of speaking words has the power to change the world. We all know that words have an enormous influence on the way we think and feel, and that things generally go more smoothly when positive words are used. However, up until now we have never been able to physically see the effects of positive words."

We have also learned through human interactions that words hold the power to create or destroy. The words "I am" speak of God consciousness or the ability for each of us to create collective reality. And I have personally seen various individuals' choice of words do just that, create their reality. I have also witnessed that my own thoughts have led to devastating consequences . Perhaps this is why mantras from various spiritual traditions hold so much power because these words are repeated while a person is in a meditative state and most receptive to the influence of words.

But what happens when words are combined with music? And what about music that already has a hypnotic effect? Water appears to relate to the same words spoken in a variety of languages. When the water was shown the words, "thank you" in Japanese, Chinese, German, French, Korean, Italian and English, exquisite crystals formed. When it was shown "you fool" in Japanese and English, no crystals formed and "you make me sick," shows a shape that appears to be a man with a gun in his hand. So if water doesn't distinguish differences between languages then it must be picking up on emotions that accompany the words. And it appears to also be picking up visual images associated with our vibrations.

While Dr. Emoto has his own examples of how our bodies read frequencies, I want to give examples related to music. Visualize yourself at a punk show in a dark and smoke-filled club. Imagine that the musicians are shouting out volatile words and people are slamming their bodies against one another, in some cases provoking fights. Now, how does the energy in this venue feel to you? Do you feel uplifted or defeated? And how will you carry this energy in your body-mind-spirit throughout the next 48 hours? Will you be impatient with other people or will you be filled with compassion for all sentient beings? Please give an honest answer.

Now visualize yourself at a global music festival. You are outdoors walking between stages, viewing the diversity of people from other cultures dressed in vivid colors and costumes. You see people dancing to African music and at another stage, a captive audience takes in the sounds of Hindustani music performed on a sitar and tabla. And further off down the field on a smaller stage, a Native American a cappella group sings traditional music. Do you feel uplifted or defeated? How will you carry this energy in your body-mind-spirit for the next 48 hours? Will you be filled with compassion for sentient beings or irritated with everyone you come in contact?

If you have visited these two situations in the past and felt the energies of both experiences in your body, then understanding the hidden messages in water will become second nature. It is a simple yet profound concept that water carries our collective consciousness and that through our words and our music, water can gage whether we are acting in a destructive or creative manner. Remember our bodies are mostly water and vibrate at a frequency based on our thoughts and our emotions. And while we can't change the fact that our bodies are made of water, we can become aware of our thoughts and how they create reality.

Dr. Emoto has traveled around the world lecturing and collecting water samples. A variety of photographs showing the effects on classical, rock, jazz and world music can be found in his books and on his web sites. And the water crystals display images that either describe the type of music, unique pair crystals form when exposed to Argentine tango and sad songs, such as a Korean song about the separation of lovers displays a water crystal with the image that suggests a broken heart. This leaves us with the question, does water have a spirit, a consciousness? And since humans are 70% water we seriously need to consider the words, thoughts and music in which we and others are exposed. Musicians, music lovers, promoters, journalists etc., need to stay aware of the effects of the music we create and promote to others.

Attending the WOMAD USA in 2001 changed my life. I had undergone a long shamanic initiation prior to the festival that caused me to be ultra sensitive, especially to music. As a shaman/musician I'm unable to provide concrete proof of the effects of musical vibes, but I have cleared negative energy out of a space by playing certain kinds of music. And I can feel the energies of the music that I review, most of which has left me feeling uplifted. I am astonished but not surprised at Dr. Emoto's findings in regard to music. His research dovetails my life work exploring the power of music and so I asked him a few questions via the Internet.

Has he tested Native American music yet on the water? He responded that he has not tested American Indian music yet, but plans on picking up a recording on his trip to Sedona this April and testing it in Japan. I asked him what would happen if people turned off the news and attended a music festival instead? And he responded that there would be a lot of fun things (happening) all over the world. And is it possible for musicians to bring the earth back in balance by performing at outdoor festivals or performing near polluted areas? Dr. Emoto's response, "Yes, it is possible but only by positive and good music."

Now that we are armed with proof of the power of music we can no longer go back to living our life in quiet denial. Because we are responsible for the reality that we create, we can end suffering in the blink of an eye if we so choose to focus on joy rather than anger. We can dance to Brazilian music (for example) and embrace the beauty of our breath, the rhythm of our own hearts beating like samba drums or we can shout volatile words then wonder why we have fallen deep into a snake pit of despair. The choice is up to each of us.

The good news is that global musical community has chosen to usher in peace. For instance, 8,000 sacred drummers gathered in Mexico on the 2004 spring equinox. They were fulfilling a prophecy of the Otomi Nation (tribal people of Mexico) that called 8,000 drummers to come together and begin planetary healing. Twenty-four hours a day, every day, musicians are gathering somewhere on the planet; celebrating and healing through music. This is what the indigenous people call "big medicine," especially now that we are conscious of the power of music revealed to us through the conduit, water.

Express love and gratitude for your life, your lessons, your talents and watch miracles transform the world around you. See your enemies as mirrors that reflect your disowned darkness and thank your enemies for the lessons they present to you. Once you do this your enemies lose their grip and you reclaim your power. As we stand on the edge of a radical global shift in consciousness, we adopt the role of a revolutionary and take music to the next level. Some day our descendents will look back at this era and treat our discovery the same way we treated the fact that the world is round and not flat as previously believed. Evolution did not stop with the demise of the dinosaurs and it continues onwards, expanding our minds, opening our hearts and bringing us closer to universal peace. Music is the map to take us there and water is the vehicle.

Analysis: Europe's historic May Day

By Claude Salhani - UPI International Editor

WASHINGTON, April 26 (UPI) -- May 1st, or May Day, has long been a celebrated holiday in Europe. It is the equivalent to Labor Day in the United States. But this next May 1st, Saturday, will be a historic May 1st, both for Europe and the rest of the world. On Saturday, the European Union welcomes its 10 newest members: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus.

The accession to the Brussels-based exclusive club of these 10 new members now expands the borders of Europe to new dimensions which just 10 years ago would have been unthinkable.

Initially launched as a union between six countries to facilitate the mining and trading of coal shortly after the end of World War II, the European Economic Community rapidly expanded to the present 15, and will grow into the world's largest trading bloc on Saturday, encompassing 25 nations stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Baltic and the threshold of the Middle East.

Europe's newest members will bring additional symbolism in that they now take Europe to new frontiers -- literally.

The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are former republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics -- the USSR -- and onetime Cold War warriors caught under Moscow's iron fist. Now Europe sits on Russia's very back door, a short hop from its second-largest city, St. Petersburg, much to the detriment -- and disenchantment -- of the Russians.

Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic were one-time members of the Warsaw Pact, the Soviet-led and controlled military alliance meant to oppose NATO and the Western powers. They were the USSR's defensive shield, meant to act as a protective buffer zone between the USSR and the West. Now Europe sits on Russia's southeastern flank -- bordering the Ukraine and Belarus.

Slovenia was part of the former Yugoslavia. Although not itself a Soviet satellite, nevertheless under Tito's communist rule the country was aligned closer to the USSR than the Western Alliance. A running joke during the days when Yugoslavia stood half way between the Warsaw Pact and NATO was "visit the USSR before it visits you." There is no guessing which side it chooses to visit now.

Malta, a small island in the Mediterranean, is a former British colony. It brings Europe a few miles closer to the coast of North Africa.

Finally Cyprus, another island in the Eastern Mediterranean, becomes the first divided country to join the European Union. In fact, it is only the southern half -- the Greek half -- that will enter Europe next May 1. The Turkish north had the door to Europe slammed shut on them by their southern neighbors in a referendum last weekend. Cyprus, another former British colony obtained independence in 1960.

The mostly-Turkish north was invaded by troops from mainland Turkey in 1974 following a coup by right-wing military officers. Fearing that the island could be attached to Greece and for the safety of their fellow ethnic Turks, Ankara invaded. Since then, Turkey has been the only country to recognize the northern half Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The only flights to and from the northern half of the island are to and from Turkey.

Cyprus also brings Europe to the doorstep of the Middle East. Situated a mere 20-minute airplane ride from Beirut, it places Europe further east than ever before. For the first time since the Crusades, the Europeans are once again firmly at the door of the Levant.

For the first time in its history, Europe will be free, united and at peace. "The ghosts of Yalta that have haunted Europe for almost 60 years will finally be laid to rest," wrote Gareth Harding, UPI's European correspondent.

Indeed, May 1 will be a historic day. It will see the creation of the world's largest single trading bloc with a population of some 450 million citizens, larger than the U.S.'s 290 million. While still nowhere near China's 1.2 billion, or India's 1 billion, the Europeans, with their standard of living and economic power comparable to that of the United States, will represent a fantastic trading partner and economic powerhouse. At least in theory.

Many of the newcomers are, what one analyst called, "basket cases," and will still need several years to catch up to the standard of the richer and more stable fellow members. Still, the "new Europe," comprised of a number of countries from "old Europe," will certainly be a force to be reckoned with.

I thought you might like to share this with your list. I also would ask those U.S. citizens on your list to support the legislation (HR 1673), introduced last year by Rep. Dennis Kucinich, to create a Department of Peace. Such a Department - and the Peace Academy that also would be established under the legislation - would teach and bring to bear in world affairs the very heart-mind skills needed to address the issues about which Marianne writes.

Blessings and gratitude for your work,

War and Peace

by Marianne Williamson

I remember before the war started in Iraq, watching Dennis Kucinich debate the Bush administration's Richard Perle on television. Kucinich said that if we went to war there would be hand-to-hand combat in Baghdad, to which Perle patronizingly responded that Kucinich clearly didn't know what he was talking about.

Today, there is hand-to-hand combat in Iraq.

Those who think comparisons to Viet Nam are facile, might want to think again. Those who think we are demonstrating for the entire world to see the unbeatable power of the United States, might want to think again. Those who think what we are doing in Iraq is somehow defeating terrorism, might want to think again.

It is hard to bear the thought of the fear our soldiers must be feeling now. They are surrounded by people they were told would see them as liberators, so many of whom now see them as an occupying army. Perhaps if we had had a real plan for what to do after strutting our macho-gone-mad display of "Shock and Awe," we would indeed have won the hearts of the Iraqi people. But clearly, we had no real plan for doing so. We seem to be very efficient at waging war, yet almost inept at waging peace.

As it is, we hear quotes such as this one from a forty-year-old college graduate in Iraq, who himself was imprisoned for two years by Saddam Hussein yet now resents the American occupation. When asked by New York Times reporters whether he wasn't grateful to the United States for overthrowing Saddam, he responded angrily, "It was God who finished Saddam, not the Americans. The Americans broke all their promises to us, and they have brought their infidel beliefs to Iraq. We hate them, and they are worse than Saddam."

What the United States government doesn't seem to understand is that you can't just go around destroying people you don't like, and expect all your problems to be over. Behind every Viet Cong there was another one behind the next tree. Behind Saddam there now appears Moktade al-Sadr, and once we've dealt with him, the consciousness he represents will morph into another leader just as troublesome. Until we recognize the importance of our relationship to the hearts and minds of the people of the world, we will continue to inspire enmity despite whatever good intentions we actually bring to the table. You cannot impose your will on other people -- even if your will is for their higher good -- and not expect them to resent you. A nation is a collection of individuals, and individuals are deeply influenced by their feelings. Imposing your will on others is a basically disrespectful stance, and showing disrespect --- particularly to an Arab male, whose culture so focuses on honor and respect --- is psychologically and emotionally inept.

Terrorism is an emotion turned into a political force. Until we recognize that, and deal with emotion and psychology as the political factors they actually represent, we will continue to strut our military power without consciousness or concern with how it feels to other people when we do so. This will lead to disaster. It already has.

Governments tend to approach life from a left-brain, rationalistic perspective - which is fine, except that most people don't. In l997, I met an Egyptian diplomat in Agra, India, where I was leading a spiritual pilgrimage. He told me the following, which I quoted in my book "Healing the Soul of America".

"I do not mean this as a criticism of the United States," he said. "I know the Americans are good men and women. But please try to make them understand; many people in my part of the world feel they have been forced to try to keep up with you, in a race we do not really care to run. Your technology is amazing, but America seems spiritually polluted to many of us. Your ways are not our ways, and while we were tempted for a while to think that your ways should be our ways, we do not think that anymore.

This is the problem, Ms. Williamson, and there will be terrible consequences in the world if Americans do not come to understand this. Islamic terrorists have had such success - if you would call their campaigns a success - because they have been able to persuade millions of peasants that America is bad. It was not too difficult to do, Ms. Williamson. All they have to do is describe the television programs you export to this part of the world, and people are horrified.

Your government does not understand. They do not see how the people feel. We need the American people to understand. Perhaps you will bring more Americans to our part of the world. If they come to understand us, then they will respect us. We would feel that respect, and then I don't think the terrorists would have such success. This is not a job the CIA can do. It is only a job which people can do."

What a tragedy, that our government does not reflect the emotional sensitivity and sophistication of the average American. Until it does, we are all in danger.

Another oily setback for Washington

By Humberto Marquez

Another blow has been dealt to the United States and its efforts to realign Iraq's oil industry after a series of attempted suicide boat bomb attacks on Saturday on the key oil facility at Khor al-Amaya and on four oil tankers waiting to load at the main Basra terminal nearby in the south of the country.

Three US sailors died as they battled to fight off the attackers, and exports from the south were temporarily halted, further exposing the risks to Gulf Arab monarchies who produce nearly half of the world's supplies.

What is alarming to the US is that the attacks mark the first time that the US military in Iraq has faced suicide bombers on boats; it was also the most serious attack yet on the oil industry. The incident is expected to cause crude prices to soar even higher, and is a further setback for the long-term goals of the US to ensure access to steady, secure supplies of inexpensive crude oil and to start playing a decisive role in oil markets at the expense of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Media reports say that the delay alone has cost Iraq 1 million barrels a day in lost exports - or about US$110 million in revenue. The smaller Khawr al-Amaya platform, which handles about 700,000 barrels a day, reopened in Sunday morning while exports from Basra resumed on Monday.

Risky business

Pumping and transporting oil in Iraq today is risky business, endangering the lives of foreign oil workers. Halliburton, the US construction giant that has benefited so handsomely from oil contracts in Iraq, has seen 29 of its own employees and contractors killed.

Output is still lower than on March 20, 2003, when US and British forces launched the invasion of Iraq, while oil prices are one-third higher. The US benchmark West Texas Intermediate closed last week at $37.43 a barrel, compared to last year's average price of $29, while the OPEC reference price basket stands at around $32, up from the 2003 average of $28 and the 2002 average of $24.

Iraq's oil output stands at just over 2 million barrels a day, in a world that consumes 40 times that amount, and the remaining OPEC members - especially Saudi Arabia - have the ability to increase short-term production to meet the market's demands.

The invasion and occupation "represent a fiasco for a huge investment", Francisco Mieres, a Central University of Venezuela graduate school professor who specializes in the oil economy, told IPS. "The United States hoped that a year [after the start of the war], Iraqi output would exceed 3 million barrels a day of crude oil that it could purchase for $15 a barrel," he added.

Although US companies have obtained "a share of the Iraqi oil business virtually for free", for the US, "the cost of guarding Middle East oil is extremely high", said Mieres. Prior to the invasion, "the Pentagon was already spending $60 billion a year maintaining its military presence in the Middle East. Although Saudi Arabia is selling crude to Washington at a discount of a dollar a barrel, military expenses drive up the actual cost of each barrel to around $200 for the United States," he argued.

The invasion has added $87 billion a year to the US defense budget at a time when the administration faces a public account deficit, Mieres pointed out. The average US citizen is paying for the disruption in the oil industry: petrol now costs them $1.76 a gallon, 30 cents more than in March 2003, and prices are expected to continue rising before the November elections in which President George W Bush is seeking re-election.

Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry has even cracked jokes, saying gas prices are rising so high that when Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney leave the White House in January, they will have to share a taxi.

Independent Scientists Call for Enquiry into GM Food Safety

At a briefing to be held in Parliament tomorrow, the Independent Science Panel (a group representing more than 1 000 scientists around the world) will release its new dossier of evidence on the problems and hazards of GM as well as the proven successes and benefits of sustainable agriculture. It makes the case for banning all environmental releases of GM crops and for a comprehensive shift to sustainable agriculture.

The ISP will call for a thorough enquiry into GM food safety and the systematic abuse of science that has allowed commercial approval in the face of damning evidence indicating that GM food is far from safe. There is ample evidence to indicate all is not well with GM food and feed. But the findings have been systematically suppressed, ignored, misrepresented or simply not followed up.

The latest in a long series of scandals is the European Food Safety Authority’s positive assessment of Monsanto’s GM maize Mon863, despite damning evidence of serious health impacts: kidney malformations and increase in white blood cells in male rats, increase in blood glucose and reduced immature red blood cells in female rats.

Other evidence includes the following.

· Villagers in the south of the Philippines living near fields planted with Monsanto’s GM hybrid maize containing Bt toxin suffered debilitating illnesses in two successive growing seasons.

· Between 2001 and 2002, twelve dairy cows died on a farm in Hesse, Germany, after eating Syngenta’s Bt176 GM maize, and others in the herd had to be slaughtered on account of mysterious illnesses.

· Arpad Pusztai and colleagues found that GM potatoes with snowdrop lectin adversely affected every organ system of young rats, and the stomach and small intestine lining grew up to twice the thickness of controls.

· Scientists in Egypt found similar results in the gastrointestinal tract of mice fed GM potato with Bt toxin.

· US Food and Drug Administration had data since the early 1990s showing that rats fed GM tomatoes with antisense gene to delay ripening developed small holes in their stomach.

· Aventis (now Bayer) found 100% increase in deaths of broiler chickens fed glufosinate-tolerant GM maize T25 compared to controls.

· Numerous anecdotes from farmers and others indicating that livestock, wildlife and lab animals avoid GM feed, and fail to thrive or die when forced to eat it.

Plan War and the Hubbert Oil Curve

An Interview with Richard Heinberg

by David Ross

April 17, 2004

Richard Heinberg is a professor at the Santa Rosa branch of the New College of California, where he teaches courses on Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community. In 1994, his monthly on-line newsletter, called MuseLetter (, received an Alternative Press Award from Utne Reader. He is the author of five books including, A New Covenant with Nature: Notes on the End of Civilization and the Renewal of Culture and Cloning the Buddha: The Moral Impact of Biotechnology. His latest book is titled, The Party's Over:

Oil, War, and the Fate of Industrial Societies (2003).

David Ross: How important is oil to industrial societies?

Richard Heinberg: It's about as important to industrial societies as water is to fish. We wouldn't be talking right now if it weren't for oil. The industrial revolution was, basically, all about fossil fuels. Coal came first, but when oil was harnessed things really heated up. With oil humankind discovered the cheapest, most abundant source of energy ever.

Energy is everything. Literally. I happen to teach ecology, and in my field we study population and resource balances in nature-which is really just another way of talking about energy. Human societies, like ecosystems, are fundamentally just energy processing systems. With the industrial revolution, human beings discovered an energy subsidy like no species has ever found before in the history of our planet.

As a result, we've increased our human population from just a few hundred million, at the start of the industrial revolution, to over six billion, three hundred million now. And of course the total is still growing: we're adding about a billion people every twelve years at current rates. This is something that's never been seen before. We've added more people just since 1999 than even existed in the world just a few hundred years ago. This is an indication of the incredible impact that fossil fuels have had on human societies.

Additionally, we've invented all sorts of technologies to take advantage of this energy subsidy through transportation, communications, manufacturing, etc. Machines now do things that were formally done by human or animal muscle power. We also do all sorts of things with machines that we didn't do at all before. So fossil fuels have changed our way of life, our view of the world, how many of us live on the planet, how we live, and where we live.

Think of the Arizona desert, for example. How many people could live there without fossil fuels? Not many. But with the enlarged scope and speed of transportation resulting from oil, we can transport materials and resources from where they're abundant to where they're scarce and support a city like Phoenix. We can cut down forests in British Columbia and use the wood in Southern California, or transport water over long distances, wherever we need it. So, we end up with cites in places where nature ordinarily would not permit very many people to live. All these things together have created our way of life as we know it today, and oil is central to that way of life.

Can you talk about the Hubbert oil curve and its implications?

M. King Hubbert was a petroleum geologist whose life spanned most of the twentieth century. He was the most famous and renowned petroleum geologist of his time. He worked for Shell Oil Company and also taught at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, UC Los Angeles, and a number of other schools. He was the first geologist to make a fairly accurate estimate of the total ultimately recoverable quantity of oil, first in North America, and then later on, in the world as a whole. He also was the first petroleum geologist to understand the principles of oil depletion.

Hubbert realized that, for any given oil province, when about half the oil is gone production tends to peak. The reason for that is that we naturally we go after the easy, cheap oil first, and by the time about half of the total amount of oil is gone, the cheap, easy stuff tends to run out; then it becomes more difficult to extract what's left. So there's a bell-shaped curve to production that seems to apply across the board. Economic and political factors can change the shape of that curve: if there's a war or the price of oil changes or a country voluntarily decides to restrict exports, those can alter the oil extraction profile. But even so, what goes up must eventually come down, and so depletion can be mathematically modeled even if the graph is fairly bumpy.

When Hubbert applied his methods to the United States, which was the world's foremost oil producing nation for many decades, he determined that the halfway point of extraction would occur around 1970. Sure enough, just as Hubbert predicted, U.S. oil production peaked in 1970, and it's been going down ever since. We're extracting about as much conventional onshore oil in the U.S. now as we were in 1940, which is much less than was being extracted in 1970, and that's the reason that we're more and more dependent upon imported oil from places like Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and Iraq.

Using Hubbert's method, it's also possible to predict when global oil production will peak. The scary thing is, the peak is likely not that far off.

No one is absolutely sure, because it is impossible to determine exactly how much oil is yet to be discovered. Some countries have political motives for underreporting or overreporting their reserves. But the best guesses are that we're only a few years away from the global oil production peak.

What will happen when we pass the peak of the Hubbert oil curve?

Once we hit the peak, every year thereafter we will be unable to find and pump more oil. If the demand continues at the present rate or grows, the supply will be inadequate. And that will have tremendous economic implications for the whole world. As I explained earlier, our whole industrial way of life is largely based on petroleum. So either we have to find other energy sources to make up for what we lose from petroleum as it begins to run out, or else we will go into permanent economic decline with vast implications for the economy, food production, transportation, and so on.

Can we find alternative energy sources in time that could replace oil?

Subject: Spirituality in Politics Forum with Dennis Kucinich in Ashland, Oregon on May 2
From: Larry Morningstar>

Bonsoir Jean,

I am promoting an event in Ashland called The Ashland Spirituality in Politics Forum. Dennis Kucinich is delivering the keynote address. A presidential candidate talking about spirituality... pretty exciting. Due to the just-in-time nature of Dennis' Presidential campaign (and maybe of all presidential campaigns), we have had only a few days to organize this event and almost zero time to promote it, so we are looking for any and all help we can get!

Would you consider sending out a mention of this event to the Earth Rainbow Network? I realize that you have an international readership, and this is a local southern Oregon event, but I think that Kucinich supporters and awakening brethren everywhere will be inspired by the nature of this event.... and some local people will be reached who would not otherwise have found out about the event. Also, there is so much more to Dennis than just the presidential campaign. This has become a movement for change in America which Dennis has catalyzed.

It is quite interesting. We are getting toward the end of the primary season, and the campaign is short on supplies. Yard signs and buttons are scarce, and we need them here. So a couple of days ago I sent out an email message to 30 or 40 contacts I have across the country who have been active in the campaign, explaining our situation and asking if they have extra supplies left over from their local campaigns which they can send to us in Oregon. Well, we have yard signs and buttons, window signs and booklets, t-shirts and stickers, etc. coming to us by mail, UPS, and Fed Ex from Illinois, Maui, Santa Cruz, and Marin County. And I had several calls from people who had almost no supplies left, who had received a copy of my message forwarded out on a local listserv and wanted to share their support. It has been so inspiring and invigorating! Such is the nature of this campaign, this movement, and the people in it. What a blessing to be a part of it all unfolding... part of the paradigm shift.

Following is a copy of the press release for the event. Also the flyer for the event is posted on the web in 2 printer friendly formats (pdf and MS Word), for easy on-demand, remote printing, at:

As you probably know, the national campaign is currently focused on Oregon and our May 18th primary. I invite you (and all your readers) to join in our collective visualization of the "51% Solution." That means 51% of the votes cast in the upcoming Oregon Democratic primary being for Kucinich.

What would that mean? It would be a message to the Democratic party that Oregon voters want Peace... Universal Health Care... Jobs... Fair Trade (not so-called "free trade")... an end to NAFTA and the WTO... repeal of the so-called "Patriot Act"... a US Department of Peace... signing of the Kyoto Accord... and all the other many Progressive programs and bills that Dennis stands for and speaks up for.

Many thanks for your consideration, Jean.

Peace and Blessings on all you do and are,

Larry Morningstar

ASHLAND, OR - Ohio Democratic Congressman and Presidential Candidate Dennis J. Kucinich will deliver the keynote address at the Ashland Spirituality in Politics Forum held at the Windmill Inn Conference Center, 2525 Ashland St., Ashland, this Sunday morning, May 2nd, from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm.

The very concept of spirituality in politics may seem to be an oxymoron: incongruous, and contradictory. This forum will endeavor to discover the relationship of these two paths, how their seeming differences can be reconciled, and how politicians can become leaders and visionaries, statesmen and stateswomen. As Congressman Kucinich says of his campaign for the Presidency, "This is a struggle for the soul of the Democratic Party."

Other speakers at the Forum will be James Twyman and Wes Nisker, and the co-moderators are Dot Fisher-Smith and Selene Aitken.

Ashland luminary James Twyman is an internationally renowned author and musician who travels the world performing "The Peace Concert." Also known as the "Peace Troubadour," he has been invited to perform in countries such as Iraq and Israel, and recently returned from a peace mission to Baghdad. He is the author of several books including "Emissary of Light," "Portrait of the Master," and "Emissary of Love." James Twyman is also the founder of the "Cloth of Many Colors" peace project which weaves the prayers of hundreds of thousands of people from around the world into a single quilt nearly a mile long. This amazing quilt was presented at the United Nations and at the Pentagon, and it was literally wrapped around the U.S. Capitol. For more information go to:

Wes Nisker is an author, radio commentator, Buddhist meditation teacher, and performer. He is also the founder and co-editor of the international Buddhist journal "Inquiring Mind." His books include "The Big Bang, The Buddha, and the Baby Boom," "Essential Crazy Wisdom," and "Buddha's Nature." In the San Francisco Bay Area, "Scoop" Nisker has entertained and enlightened radio listeners for years with his insightful and hilarious political commentaries, concluding with his signature sign-off: "If you don't like the news, go out and make some of your own." For more information go to:

"Scoop Nisker is the missing link between sit-down meditation and stand-up comedy." Paul Krassner, editor of "The Realist"

The co-moderators of the event will be Dot Fisher-Smith, artist, counselor, community elder, facilitator, longtime zen student and peace advocate/activist; and Selene Aitken, certified mediator, practitioner of Nonviolent Communication, and former co-director of Peace House. Aletha Nowitzky will sing her amazing rendition of the "Star Spangled Spirit."

The format for this event will be a circle, with the presenters seated in the center on a raised platform, facing each other, and the rest of the participants seated in concentric circles around them. This form of seating was chosen to be in harmony with nature, inspired by a traditional council setting with participants facing one another, rather than in a more linear, flat, less interactive, panel. A circle is more friendly, more comfortable, more inviting, more fluid, and more interactive.

"When any one of us is aligned with our purpose, there is an inexhaustible source of energy. Once you're aligned with your purpose, the energy is always there to do whatever you need. You never get tired, and you do everything with a sense of joy. It's actually effortless ... it's a flow." -- Dennis J. Kucinich

Everyone who comes to this event is asked to prepare in advance by considering "What is spirituality?" and "What is politics?" As Kucinich has stated, "We are not victims of the world we see, we are victims of the way we see the world!"

Kucinich will set the tone for the forum with his his opening address. Following this, each of the other presenters will give their personal definitions of spirituality and of politics, and will then address the interplay between these two disciplines. This will spark a conversation among the presenters that is dynamic, unscripted, and unrehearsed, which will be opened up to the outer circles of participants through questions and comments.

"Crown thy good, America. Crown thy good with brotherhood, and sisterhood. And crown thy good with compassion and restraint and forbearance and a commitment to peace, to democracy, to economic justice here at home and throughout the world. Crown thy good, America -- crown thy good."

- Dennis J. Kucinich

All who feel called to come and join in this event are most cordially invited. As Kucinich says, "One person can make a difference." That one person might just be you.

The cost for this event is $15 - $25 sliding scale, at the door. Everyone is welcome, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Direction to the Windmill Inn Conference Center: From Interstate 5, take exit 14, turning East on to Ashland St. (which is Highway 66). The Windmill Inn is just past the gas station on the left.

Subject: New Honda commercial... Unbelievable

New Honda Commercial

There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the film.  Everything you see really happened in real time exactly as you see it. The film took 606 takes. On the first 605 takes, something, usually very minor, didn't work. They would then have to set the whole thing up again. The crew spent weeks shooting night and day.

The film cost six million dollars and took three months to complete, including a full engineering the sequence. In addition, it's two minutes long so every time Honda airs the film on British television, they're shelling out enough dough to keep any one of us in clover for a lifetime. However, it is fast becoming the most down loaded advertisement in Internet history.

Honda executives figure the ad will soon pay for itself simply in  "free" viewings (Honda isn't paying a dime to have you watch this commercial!).  When the ad was pitched to senior executives, they signed off on it immediately without any hesitation-including the costs.

There are six and only six handmade Accords in the world. To the  horror of Honda engineers, the filmmakers disassembled two of them to make the film. Everything you see in the film (aside from the walls, floor, ramp, and complete Honda Accord) are parts from those two cars.

When the ad was shown to Honda executives, they liked it and commented  on how amazing computer graphics have gotten. They fell off their chairs! when they found out it was for real. Oh! And about those funky windshield wipers. On the new Accords, the windshield wipers have water sensors and are designed to start doing their thing automatically as soon as they become wet. It looks a bit weird in the commercial.

Just one-second of computer generation is used to link the two  halves-when an exhaust pipe rolls across the floor. At one point, three tires roll uphill because inside they have been weighted with bolts and screws.

Go to and watch the commercial... you won't believe it!
