"Millions of people are rising up around the world, intellectuals, unionists, environmentalists, military veterans, mothers, reverends, all joining hands for the sake of our planet and the peace which so many millions fought and died for. We are demanding a true investigation of the Bush regime and their agenda, their culpability in the 9-11 attacks, their corporate and fascist financing, their involvement in drug-running, arms dealing, pharmaceutical investing, and CIA assassination programs. America needs treatment for a very malignant cancer, one which has taken over the very heart of the nation, and is poisoning our lifeblood with hate and division. We need to perform emergency surgery -- we need regime change in the United States! Say no to self-appointed military dictators, not only in Iraq, but here in America! The Bush family must be exposed, along with the CIA's agenda of the past century."

Anti-war protesters on Wednesday predicted "literally millions" of people in New York, San Francisco and more than 30 international cities would march the weekend of Feb. 15 against war in Iraq. A day after President Bush said in his State of the Union address that he was ready to disarm Saddam Hussein's Iraq, organizers brought politicians, church leaders and Oscar-winning filmmakers Jonathan Demme and Mercedes Ruehl out to announce the protest. "We can, when we stand up together, actually stop this war from happening," said Leslie Cagan, a co-chairwoman of New York's United for Peace and Justice chapter.

"The high office of the President has been used to foment a plot to destroy the American's freedom and before I leave office, I must inform the citizen of this plight."

- President John Fitzgerald Kennedy - In a speech made to Columbia University on Nov. 12, 1963, ten days before his assassination.

Dear Jean,

This quote that you placed in the e-mail (and which I have been guilty of using in the past, too, without checking it out) was a NON-event. He never said this and he was not at Columbia University. I have a good friend who has a close friend that went to the University and researched this. He found out it had NOT happened. I then told a person who had this quote on her web site (a patriot site). She took the time to carefully check it out through all sources, including the staff at JFK Presidential library, and she also verified that it was NOT a quote from JFK and he was not at that university speaking at the supposed time of the statement. So do with this information what you will.

Thanks

Ken

Food Not Bombs - Act Now

Here's suggestion for making a difference:

Place 1/2 c. uncooked rice in a small plastic bag (a snack-sized bag or sandwich bag work fine). Squeeze out excess air and seal the bag. Wrap it in a piece of paper on which you have written:

"If your enemies are hungry, feed them.² Romans 12:20 . Please send this rice to the people of Iraq; do not attack them.

Place the paper and bag of rice in an envelope (either a letter-sized or small padded mailing envelope - both are the same cost to mail) and address them to:

President George Bush
White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
Washington, DC 20500

US Military Carrying Illegal Weapons When Refueling in Ireland

Lessons for Prince Edward Island?

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI, Canada - Residents who oppose United States military refueling and training in Prince Edward Island are suggesting that we should learn from what has happened in Ireland. US military planes refueling in Ireland are carrying weapons, despite the fact that when permission for refueling was originally granted, it was under the condition that NO weapons be carried. The US military has been refueling at Shannon Airport in Ireland for many years, but recently mainstream media in Ireland have reported, and airport workers have confirmed, that the US military certainly is carrying armaments through Shannon.

In Ireland, criminal charges were lodged against government ministers and controlling members of the local airport authority, and there is a high court case challenging the legality of the US use of Irish airspace.

Irish officials repeatedly assured residents that "the US is complying with all local laws." Tim Hourigan works with Refueling Peace: Campaign to Monitor and Stop US Military Flights in Ireland. He explains that, "The US military here have broken a litany of laws, the Defence Act, the Geneva Convention, the Hague Convention 1907, the Radiological Protection Act, the Air Transport and Navigation Act, the Nuremberg Charter, and I don't know how many environmental laws."

Tim Hourigan, who monitors US military traffic at Shannon says, "let me tell you a true story... and you should tell it to others. A WORLD Airways military charter jet made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport. It was supposed to land there anyway but it radioed in an emergency. When responding emergency crews reached the plane to deal with the fire, they were met by men with M-16s and denied access to the plane. The military were so secretive about the cargo that they dealt with the fire themselves rather than let trained and well equipped fire fighters put it out. We have no idea what was on that plane. But we KNOW by their behavior that it wasn't humanitarian aid for Afghan children."

PEI residents are repeatedly reassured by various media commentators, politicians, and corporate officials, that the contract would only be for "search and rescue" or "just for training." Premier Binns tells us it would be for "peacekeeping initiatives, search and rescue, our relationship to peacekeeping efforts around the world, and supporting our allies." The Guardian editorial says the deal would be for "American Coast Guard crews training." What are we to make of the mixed messages and the similarity to the assurances given in Ireland? We do know that many US military aircraft pass through the airport in Gander, Nfld. on the way to Shannon, Ireland. Isn't it only logical to wonder whether they might want to land planes here to refuel (shorter flight path)?

Proponents of the plan admit that the C-130 Hercules would be refueling here. The primary function of the C-130 Hercules is the intratheater portion of airlift missions and it is known as the prime transport for paradropping troops and equipment into hostile areas. Furthermore, specialized variants of the C-130 are used for Refueling of Fighter Planes, Special Operations, Reconnaissance, Drone Control, Electronic Warfare, Missile Operations, and Gunship Missions.

James Clement of F.R.E.E.D.O.M. PEI states, "Even if it were just cargo planes coming to Summerside, that would mean more hangar space in Ft. Bragg for Hellfire missiles or cluster bombs, the likes of which now litter Afghanistan, according to Human Rights Watch."

All of these facts raise real questions about whether we can take such assurances at face value. Can we really trust these statements from our politicians, the US military, and people who will benefit financially from this deal?

Standing by while the US military slaughters countless innocent civilians and conscripts is bad enough. Offering them our trust, support, and runways is worse. If Islanders oppose this deal, now is the time to speak out.

SAMONE MICHAELS, THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK BELOW, IS AN ERN SUBSCRIBER. I RECENTLY INCLUDED IN A COMPILATION HER "Timely Channeled Material". VERY INTERESTING REVIEW!

From: http://www.sldprints.com/book_reviews.htm

Speak Your Truth: Book Review

‘Speak your Truth’, See no…Hear no…Speak no UFO’s

Author: Samone Michaels <samone@sldprints.com>
Publisher: Sunstone Press
ISBN: 0-86534-361-6

I have never previously reviewed a book of cartoons irrespective of subject matter, so it came as pleasant surprise to find that I actually chuckled at some of those in this collection. Humour, especially cartoon humour, is so subjective that it can be very difficult to pigeonhole adequately. At its most basic, it either makes you smile or it does not and this collection made me smile. Prior to reading the opening credits, I quickly flicked through this review copy and was immediately struck by the style and humour, which is very reminiscent of one of the few cartoonists who does make me laugh out loud; Gary Larson. It came as no surprise therefore to see that Larson is mentioned in the dedications at the beginning. However, unlike Larson whose surreal humour is solely designed to produce laughter, this work has a message. What makes this slim volume different is that each cartoon is designed to highlight some facet from the shadow worlds of UFO’s, ET’s and conspiracy theory. Every page carries a short description of the particular item highlighted, everything from abductions to the X Files is here, and in every case the point is made using laughter and irony instead of grim reality.

The author and designer is Samone Michaels who lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico and claims to have a background in classified aerospace programmes, whether or not this is true is secondary to the message. Among the subjects dealt with are some that for various reasons did not see much general exposure These include the fact that in the year 2000, the ultra-clandestine NSA, (National Security Agency) took over a civilian scientific expedition in the Antarctic. No reason was given for this move, but nevertheless, civilian scientists were removed from McMurdo Base and replaced with NSA agents and technicians from the Raytheon Corporation. Raytheon is one of the US governments’ main ‘black ops’ contractors and one popular belief suggests that ‘something’ was found under the ice. Another, and more likely explanation given the nature of the NSA’s raison d’être, indicates that they were constructing another version of the HAARP (High Altitude Auroral Research Project) antennae installation near Prince William Sound in Alaska. No satisfactory explanation has ever been given for this piece of hardware either, although speculation is rife and includes everything from mind control to a type of weapon.

Another of the fascinating subjects covered relates to the repeated loss of two Russian probes designated Phobos 1 and Phobos 2 both launched in July 1988 and both intended to rendezvous with mars prior to their ultimate destination, the Martian moonlet Phobos. Given the notoriously secretive nature of Russian research projects, particularly during the days of the old USSR, little is known about the reasons for the failure of both missions however a few details have emerged. Among these are the facts that radio contact was lost with Phobos 1 two months into the mission, but Phobos 2 accomplished at least part of its task. On January 1989 the small, unmanned vehicle successfully entered Mars orbit, but when on March 28th 1989 it aligned itself with the moonlet prior to depositing an instrument package, communication was abruptly lost. The following day, Nikolai Simyonov of the Soviet Space Agency ‘Glavkosmos’ announced that, ‘Phobos 2 is 99% lost for good’, and there had it not been for pressure from Russia’s partners in the Phobos project the matter may have ended.

Due to continued questioning the Glavkosmos released videotape of the last moments of the Phobos 2 transmission, except for the last few frames, these final images have never been released. The tape released shows two anomalies, the first appears to be an artificial structure some two hundred and thirty miles across on the Martian surface. The second shows a shadow some twenty miles long also on the Martian surface. It is just after this that Phobos 2 began to align itself with Phobos and the transmission was lost, significantly it is also the last few seconds of tape not yet released. Stories have emerged that what was on these frames show something that should not have been there, ‘something’ hurtling towards the moonlet from the Martian surface, ‘something’ that effectively silenced the satellite. It is uncertain whether any official explanation has ever been received.

Another example of the subjects covered is one that finds echoes here in the United Kingdom, the ‘Taos Hum’. This irritating anomaly refers to a continuous infuriating hum heard by sensitive people who live in the town of Taos, New Mexico. The hum never abates, and continues to surround and irritate twenty four hours a day. It has been variously attributed to everything from ELF (Extra Low Frequency) emanations from antenna used to communicate with submerged submarines, to projects in developments at nearby government/military facilities. Whatever the cause, the hum is a very real curse on the people of Taos. This anomaly has an exact parallel in the seaside town of Largs in Scotland, which is situated close by the nuclear submarine base at Faslane on the River Clyde. As with Taos, it only affects certain, sensitive people and several have already sold up and moved to other areas. This of course is no guarantee of peace, because due to the proliferation of EM (electromagnetic) pollution from cell phone masts, military and civilian radar and power lines, those unfortunate enough to suffer form this problem have no ready avenue of escape. It goes without saying that although governments all over the world are fully aware of the dangers, they continue to sit in their hands and deny all responsibility and liability.

These then are but three on the important issues dealt with in this book of cartoons using the barb of humour to put their point across. The work is well laid out in specific sections dealing with many of the puzzles that bedevil society today. It is the first time I have encountered this type of approach and from what the author says; it appears that this will be the first of many collections of her work and humour. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to any truthseeker with a sense of fun and love of laughter.

DREAMS

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.

She said, "Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she gave me a giant squeeze.

"Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of kids..." "No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. " I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three month we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.

If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."

She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose." She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.

One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

Nuns, Priests, Veterans and Students Sentenced to Federal Prison for Civil Disobedience to Close the School of the Americas

Defendants Testified Against Double Standard in War on Terrorism, Put SOA and U.S. Foreign Policy on Trial

Columbus, GA - As the Bush Administration seeks to expand the “war on terrorism”, 42 human rights advocates from across the country were tried this week in federal court for civil disobedience to close what they call a terrorist training camp on U.S. soil: the School of the Americas, renamed Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (SOA/WHISC). Graduates of the controversial combat training school for Latin American soldiers continue to be implicated in human rights atrocities throughout Latin America.

The defendants were among 10,000 who gathered in November to call for the closure of the SOA/WHISC. They peacefully crossed onto Ft. Benning, site of the school. All of the defendants have either pled or were found guilty of trespass. The last two defendants were convicted this afternoon. Sentences ranged from twelve months probation to six months in federal prison with fines. Three defendants reported to prison immediately, and the rest will self-report.

The group included eight Catholic nuns, a priest, a reverend, four veterans, union organizers, students and others. Thirty-five more defendants will start trial on February 10, facing the same trespass charge.

“The SOA is out of alignment with the values of the American people,” said Judy Bierbaum, a defendant from Albuquerque, New Mexico. “Patriotism is not about slapping a flag in the window if that’s where it ends – it’s about calling our country to task.”

The defendants testified in court against a double standard in the “war on terrorism”, offering evidence to put the SOA/WHISC and U.S. foreign policy on trial. Defense Attorney William Quigley proffered an affidavit from U.S. Rep. James McGovern that calls for the closure of the SOA/WHISC, and a copy of a 2002 report from Amnesty International that calls for a suspension of training at the SOA/WHISC, and an independent commission of inquiry to investigate the school. Amnesty refutes the claim that the WHISC is a new institution, stating that WHISC "is essentially the same school as SOA, with the same primary mission…”

The trial judge, G. Mallon Faircloth, is known for giving the maximum of six months to opponents of the SOA/WHISC. Previous to this week’s verdicts, nearly one hundred people have served a total of over fifty years in prison for engaging in nonviolent resistance in a broad-based campaign to close the school.

The SOA/WHISC is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers. Its graduates are consistently involved in human rights abuses and atrocities. In 1996 the Pentagon was forced to release training manuals used at the school that advocated the use of torture, extortion and execution.

Subject: Email petitions could be useless

Thinking through the question of on-line email petitions: I sent one out recently and got this information back regarding their usefulness - ie, none. In fact the author thought it through (as I should have done) and gives his findings below, as well as a couple of websites for petitions, which really are useful. I suppose the email petitions do some good in bringing issues to people's attention, but there are probably better uses of one's time and energy.

---

PETITION

The United States of America is at the moment ready to dictate a war. Today we find ourselves worldwide in an unequal balance which could lead to a Third World War. If you likewise disapprove of the current situation, the UNO is ready to receive signatures which would help to avoid this tragic happening. Please copy this e-mail and insert in a new mail, sign your name at the end of the following list and send to persons you know. If you receive a list of over 500 names, kindly send a copy to: The United Nations.

mailto: inquiries@un.org

A fake address.

Even if you decide not to sign your name, do forward this petition onwards.

Please don't. The effort is a waste of time and only clogs the internet.

This petition and other well-intentioned ones like it are spam (junk mail, if you will). They have no impact. The reason: they're not legitimate in any way, hence cannot be effective.

1) They have no signature. Without a signature, they represent no one. Even signed petitions must stand scrutiny and verification, and are often challenged. They must also have a legal address. These email things haven't a chance of being verified.

2) They're too easy to make fraudulent. Anyone can put any name on them. They are meaningless as a documentation of anything. No one on the receiving end could think otherwise.

3) the numbers involved are most telling. Do the math:

An email petition arrives with some information (often lengthy) about a worthy cause. It asks you to add your name (and sometimes other info) to a list and then pass the list on to all your friends and colleagues requesting that they continue the chain. It also asks you that should your name be (e.g.) the 100th on the list, to mail the list back to the organizer.

Let's suppose I start such a list, and pass it on to 5 friends, and ask that they continue the chain. To simplify, let's suppose a) that no one signs the list twice, b) that no two people supply identical information, c) that everyone who receives the list passes it on to between 1 and 9 people, d) that no one delays passing on the list, and e) that there is an infinite supply of people.

By the time there are 15 names on each list, up to 36,000,000,000 emails will have been sent, and each one of them has my name on it. But how many times do the names appear of the 5 people I sent the original list to? And how is it possible to know the total number of people who have signed the petition?

Perhaps instead of trying to count how many people have signed the petition, it is intended to forward the returned lists on to the person or organization being petitioned. Supposing everyone passes the list on to just 3 other people, and that all the lists are returned, each with just 15 names on them. Forwarding on all the returned lists at the rate of 1 per second would take about 2 months.

Email petitions tend to continue circulating indefinitely. Some of the ones I've been sent recently I first received more than a year earlier. Often useful information is lost or corrupted in the process (exactly what details are required, where to return the list to, expiration date of the petition etc.). Sometimes they were utterly fallacious to begin with (Congress not funding PBS, Afghani women, etc.) And usually the older they are, the longer they are, and therefore the more time and space they take up.

It's far better to use web-based petitions (see URLs below) where details can be entered via forms, and the data can be processed automatically using scripts which extract it and place it in a database. The address of the petition page can be passed on using relevant mailing lists that people have subscribed to, by links on sympathetic web sites, or via messages to the appropriate newsgroups. There is a world of difference between this and using a direct email technique which is unlikely to accomplish the original purpose of the petition.

Ironically, it is often those who are most concerned about pollution, environmental preservation and human rights in the physical world who are responsible for this type of littering in the virtual world. The waste of time, energy and resources is common to both. An email petition is merely another form of the chain letter... and without wishing to be too harsh, it's spam.

No offense meant, but do a huge favor: please don't forward these useless things - they only clog email boxes. There *are* online petition sites that are verifiable and *are* making a difference.

The buzzphrase that should *always* send you for the DELETE button is: "please sign this petition and forward it to as many people as you can."

There has been a "peace petition" going around asking you to add your name to a list and forward to all of your friends. The email asks that at 500 names you send the list to unicwash@unicwash.org. This email is a hoax. It was not started by unicwash.org. See their website for details:

For the record, there has never been an "add your name to the bottom and forward" email petition that has been for real. The product is far too easily faked to be used as any sort of persuasive evidence. It's important to spread the word that this petition is not for real. Not only does it creates more junk email (which we all dislike), but it makes people feel that they have accomplished something when in fact they havn't, detracting from their energy to take meaningful action.
