Hybrid Series #16: May Peace Prevail On Earth!

Hello everyone

Here is your last compilation for 2003, a most charged and pivotal year that holds much to ponder about... I won't go into any details about what highlights I see as critically important in these last 12 months but I'm sure it is fairly obvious what these are if you have been closely following what I've felt necessary to network to all of you - and beyond to your own lists of contacts, as I know from the feedbacks I occasionally get that many regularly do circulate bits and parts of all this to many others.

At times oscillating between hope and despair, empowerment and discouragement, all naturally occurring emotions when you feel connected to our larger human family and personally responsible for the well being of all our brothers and sisters in the great saga of life, evolution and self-realization over countless generations, eras and, ultimately, dimensions in our ever-rebounding journey back to the Source, the time is now coming as is traditionally the case on the eve of a new year according to our Gregorian calendar, to take stock of where we have been, how we fared in all respects, and where we want to go from a deeper, multiple lifetimes-spanning perspective.

Our challenges ahead are multiple and daunting and yet there lie in the deepest recesses of our soul, the part that connects us all to the entire Universe and the Universal Reality That Spawn It All, all the necessary resources of goodwill, can-do ingenuity, determination, faith, and, above all, Love and infinite compassion to successfully contribute our vital piece to the overall puzzle of global healing, spiritual rejuvenation and universal peace.

I trust you will remain along for the whole ride - or jump aboard the cosmic band-wagon of awakening pilots of Spaceship Earth - until we can all, one day soon, rally to the pinnacle of Godsciousness and rejoice as One in our Reclaimed Sanctity, happy to have conquered once again the Himalaya of spiritual ascension into Godhood.

May we all live infinitely long and eternally prosper

Jean Hudon

Worthy of your Attention

Matlock Hugh> has sent me a 20 page transcript of a December 13, 2003 channeling session with the Arcturian. Here is a brief excerpt:
"Q. Yes I have three questions. .. But let me start off with the Ederman message. What is the status in terms of the percentage of the population that you're monitoring in terms of voting yes? How much of the population are you monitoring who would be giving an answer? And what would be the actual number that you are looking for, for an actual showing up? So there are three questions there.
A. We found it difficult to devise a numeric figure to measure the response. The response is multifaceted. Few have actually responded in simple yes and no terms. However... numerically we would say between 46 and 51 percent are affirmative. The negatives, however, are not strong negatives, there is a spectrum of uncertainty. We are currently looking at this spectrum to ascertain how the uncertainty can be removed and clarity can be achieved. We congratulate you for your work to this end. We ourselves are excited and appreciate this process of working with humanity. We find it refreshing to have a clear channel and open dialogue on this issue. We require a resonance to be built with humanity before we can act. We require an invitation in energetic terms, so the development of a general spirit of appreciation for this interaction is what's important. It's the slide we can slide down, to enter your system. We do not wish to initiate contact from our, or for our, objectives. But to initiate contact in response to a genuine call, in response to a longing.  CLIP

Courts deal Bush policy a double hit U.S. rebuked on detainees, 'dirty bomber' (Dec 19)
Los Angeles Times WASHINGTON - Dealing a double blow to the Bush administration, federal appeals courts said Thursday that the government had acted illegally in holding a U.S.-born "enemy combatant" in a military brig and in denying hundreds of foreigners at the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the right to challenge their detention. A federal appeals court in New York ruled that the president does not have the authority as commander-in-chief to arrest American citizens on U.S. soil and hold them without filing criminal charges. The president's wartime powers do not extend to the home front, the appeals courts said, unless Congress authorizes the chief executive to act. And neither the Constitution nor federal law gives the president an "inherent power" to make arrests, said the judges of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The 2-1 decision gave the government 30 days to release Jose Padilla - a Brooklyn-born Muslim who allegedly conspired with al-Qaida operatives to detonate a "dirty bomb" in the United States - from a military brig. The judges did not say Padilla must go free. Instead, they said the government must charge him with a crime if it wants to hold him. In a separate 2-1 decision in San Francisco, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the government must give Guantanamo detainees a chance to speak to a lawyer and seek their release through the courts. About 660 suspected terrorists and war criminals are being held at the base.

Brief on Mercury Poisoning and Heavy Metal Toxicity
Mercury toxicity: risk, symptoms, and how to check if you are affected by mercury poisoning. Toxicity caused by excessive mercury exposure is now becoming recognized as a widespread environmental problem and is continuing to attract a great deal of public attention. A National Academy of Sciences study published in July, 2001 estimates that up to 60,000 children born in the USA each year may be affected by mercury toxicity, and recently (Mar 1, 2002) an environmental group had charged the FDA of failing to warn the public of the dangers of mercury contamination from eating tuna, which contain high levels of mercury. The dangers of mercury toxicity, as with other heavy metals, has been known for some time, but it is only in recent years that the extent of the problem, and the sources of the health risk associated with these toxicities, especially mercury toxicity have become apparent. It has become so prevalent that it could be seen as a major public health concern. CLIP

The Pervasive Fear of Talking About the Israeli Connection (Dec 13-14)
It is wide open now. Israelis are training Americans at Fort Bragg on their well tested techniques for carrying out targeted--and of course extrajudicial--assassinations. Americans in Iraq are copying this and all the other wretchedly cruel, unjust (and failed) Israeli occupation tactics in the West Bank and Gaza, tactics that the U.S. through its massive aid enables and encourages Israel to pursue. It is impossible to exaggerate the stupidity and just plain evil of the Bush administration in transferring such copycat policies to Iraq, at a time when hatred of U.S. policies is already rising daily around the world. The training of assassination teams is only one of many manifestations of the United States-Israeli connection. At the same time, almost all influential individuals and groups in the U.S. political landscape still shy away from discussing the degree to which this Israeli connection has been a major factor in determining the entire complex of U.S. policies on Iraq and the Middle East since September 11. In the eyes of most Americans, the correctness of the ever stronger ties between the right-wing governments of the United States and Israel is simply not to be questioned. CLIP

Modern Jihad: Tracing the Dollars Behind the Terror Networks by Loretta Napoleoni
No punches are pulled in this alarming study of a $1.5-trillion terrorist economy that is as integral a part of the Western economy as banking or big oil. So compelling is Italian economist and journalist Napoleoni's indictment of the West for the creation and sustenance of international terrorism that she believes this is the reason publication was nixed by her commissioning publisher's board of directors. Napoleoni traces 50 years of Western economic and political dominance in developing Muslim countries backing repressive, corrupt regimes, fighting the Cold War by proxy and blocking the legitimate economic ascendancy of millions. "As in the Crusades," in which Napoleoni finds many modern parallels, "religion is simply a recruitment tool; the real driving force is economics." The only way those left behind by globalisation can afford to fight back, the author says, is with the proceeds of crime, drugs, arms, prostitution, gems, smuggling, even slavery, all fuelled by the West's addictions and other "poisonous dependencies" and laundered and reinvested by the West's own financial industry. Interviews with former terrorists, intelligence officials and world-class economists enliven this thoughtful and informed analysis, but evidence of the FBI and CIA being prevented by the Clinton and Bush administrations from fully investigating the real (Saudi) sources of Islamist terrorism and of the real motives for the campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq could create a political firestorm here and abroad.

Why Ecocide Is 'Good News' for the GOP (Dec 20)
Difficult as it may be to believe, many of the conservatives who have great influence in the Bush administration and now in Congress are governed by a Higher Power. In his book "The Carbon Wars," Greenpeace activist Jeremy Leggett tells how he stumbled upon this otherworldly agenda. During the Kyoto climate change negotiations, Leggett candidly asked Ford Motor Company executive John Schiller how opponents of the pact could believe there is no problem with "a world of a billion cars intent on burning all the oil and gas available on the planet?" The executive asserted first that scientists get it wrong when they say fossil fuels have been sequestered underground for eons. The Earth, he said, is just 10,000, not 4.5 billion years old, the age widely accepted by scientists. Then Schiller confidently declared, "You know, the more I look, the more it is just as it says in the Bible." The Book of Daniel, he told Leggett, predicts that increased earthly devastation will mark the "End Time" and return of Christ. Paradoxically, Leggett notes, many fundamentalists see dying coral reefs, melting ice caps and other environmental destruction not as an urgent call to action, but as God's will. In the religious right worldview, the wreck of the Earth can be seen as Good News!

Amazon may be levelled by the humble soya, Land cleared for planting as world demand rockets (Dec 20),13369,1110712,00.html
The dry, yellowing fields stretch out to the horizon, past shiny new silos, their polished tin gleaming in the noon sunshine. Beside freshly hoed fields stand new tractors and ploughs. Look past the neat farmstead and on to the plain and you could think yourself in Kansas, maybe Texas - but then there would be no accounting for the billowing smoke in the hazy distance, the fires and the rainforest that they ravage. This is the Amazon, a vast lung producing 20% of the earth's oxygen, and home to 30% of all plant and animal species. It is so immense that it would swallow Europe in full and three more Englands besides. The rainforest is shrinking at a rate that is staggering environmentalists. Around 25,000 sq km (10,000 sq miles) disappeared last year - an area about the size of Belgium. Brazil's environment minister has confirmed to the Guardian that this year's figures will be as bad. Others think they will be worse. Huge swaths of the land are being transformed not only by illegal logging companies and cattle ranchers, but also by a newer invader, the soya bean. For many the extraordinary expansion of this bean - used not only for its oil and food for humans but also as feed for cattle - is the new front in the battle for the Amazon. CLIP

Less Sunshine Reaching Earth,13026,1108853,00.html
(...) Ohmura's results suggested that levels of solar radiation striking the Earth's surface had declined by more than 10% in three decades. ... It turns out that Ohmura was the first to document a dramatic effect that scientists are now calling "global dimming". Records show that over the past 50 years the average amount of sunlight reaching the ground has gone down by almost 3% a decade. It's too small an effect to see with the naked eye, but it has implications for everything from climate change to solar power and even the future sustainability of plant photosynthesis. ...The few experts who have studied the effect believe it's down to air pollution. Tiny particles of soot or chemical compounds like sulphates reflect sunlight and they also promote the formation of bigger, longer lasting clouds. "The cloudy times are getting darker," says Cohen, at the Volcani Centre. "If it's cloudy then it's darker, but when it's sunny things haven't changed much.

Earthlike planets could be common in the universe (Dec. 11, 2003)
New research indicates Earthlike planets might be common. In 44 computer simulations of planet formation near a sun, astronomers found that each simulation produced one to four Earthlike planets, including 11 "habitable" planets about the same distance from their stars as Earth is from our sun. The simulations show that the amount of water on Earthlike planets could be greatly influenced by outer gas giant planets like Jupiter. The findings are significant because of the discovery in recent years of a large number of giant planets such as Jupiter and Saturn orbiting other suns. The presence of those planets can be inferred from their gravitational interaction with their parent stars and their effect on light from those stars as seen from Earth. There could be planets such as ours around a number of other suns relatively close to our solar system. A significant number of those planets are likely to be in the "habitable zone," the distance from a star at which the planet's temperature will maintain liquid water on the surface, thought to be a requirement for life. Google opens up books to searching (Dec 18)
A service to search the entire text of books has been launched by web giant Google. It could play an important role in the evolution of the way people search for information online, say some experts. Google Print Beta lets searchers view excerpts from books, as well as author's notes, reviews and cover artwork. It also provides links to online book sellers and related advertising. The service works when a user types the phrase "" and search words into Google's search box. "Google has been experimenting with a number of publishers to test their content online," says a message posted to the Google site. "Publishers' content is hosted by Google and is ranked in our search results according to the same technology we use to evaluate web sites." So far it is possible to search 60,000 titles from several publishers and Google is talking to others providing about giving access to their books. Human knowledge In October, the online retailer Amazon gave customers the option to search the complete text of books that can be bought through the site. Danny Sullivan, editor of, says this is an important development for internet users. "Both companies recognise that there's value in searching books," Sullivan told New Scientist. "That's where the bulk of human knowledge is." Sullivan adds that Google and its competitors will seek to provide more and more searchable information as they evolve. "Search engines are still very much in their infancy," he says. "We're going to see more and more specialised sources of information."

THE DRUGS DON'T WORK: And for once it's not us saying it, it's Glaxo - In an extraordinary admission, a senior executive with UK drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has 'confessed' that the vast majority of prescription drugs don't work. Dr Allen Roses, worldwide vice-president of genetics at GSK, has told a conference that over 90 per cent of all drugs work for only between 30 per cent and 50 per cent of patients. At the very bottom of the efficacy table are the cancer drugs, which work on only 25 per cent of patients. These are closely followed by Alzheimer's drugs that work on just 30 per cent of people. Drugs for rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, incontinence, hepatitis C, and diabetes work on only half the patients, at best. The most effective drugs are the analgesics, which work for to 80 per cent of those who take them. This frank admission is also a very shocking one, and for several reasons. The pharmaceutical industry is about the most profitable in the world, and its profits are generated by drugs that everyone has implicitly believed would work (everyone apart from regular E-news readers, that is). Worse, in this scramble for profits, around 105,000 Americans and 40,000 Britons die every year from an adverse reaction to a drug, and many thousands more are permanently harmed from one. CLIP

Subject: Thank you for your words about "not charging for spiritual services"
Date: 18 Dec 2003

Hi Jean,

Blessings to you!

I posted the following to my metagroups list, which is small potatos compared to the ERN. I appreciate you, knowing that what you do comes from the heart. And I appreciate, too, that you're not afraid, like so many, to speak the truth about the corruption going on as the reign of the last evil cabal (the Illuminati) struggles for their survival against an onslaught of the illumination of Divine Light.... Here's what I posted:

Over the years, since I first came in contact with Jean Hudon and his Earth Rainbow Network while I was publishing Paradox Magazine, I have often felt a real spiritual connection. He is what I often referred to as a "Man of the Heart" or a "Man of Integrity." I can often sense such things in people (even sometimes when their ideas are very different than my own), which is not the case with Jean. I am convinced that it is "People of the Heart" and "People of Integrity" who will change the world.

Anyway, I totally agree with him in regard to charging for spiritual services. Whenever this subject has come up, I inevitably refer my heart to Jesus' injunction: "Freely you have received, freely give." That, I believe, is the "proper" perspective. Light workers, in my opinion, are revealed as People of the Heart when they make "good news" available to the poor without charge. This is, I am certain, the paradigm of the coming Golden Age of peace. It is that attitude that will transform the world, bringing it more into alignment with the highest ideals of Mankind and delivering us from the age of greed and unbridled corruption.

You can hear him for yourself, online, at this website ... ... On that page, scroll down until you come the following link that takes you to the audio interview:

The Spirit of the Internet, with Jean Hudon

French Canadian Jean Hudon is a global networker, a visionary who is pioneering the use of the Internet as a tool for planetary consciousness. He has created a communication network that spans the globe, offering a wide variety of information that is not available
through traditional media, as well as organizing worldwide peace meditations.

Here is a small part of Jean's current compilation. You can subscribe yourself if you are so inclined. I have provided the info for that.

NOTE FROM JEAN: In case some of you are interested about what Ron publishes on his list, here is a quote from another email from him on this: "Metagroups is a small list that was set up primarily to let people in the Central Florida area know some of the things that are happening in our metaphysical community."

Is Peace on Earth Possible?

As I sit here, less than a week before Christmas 2003, I feel weary, although there is a part of me that is hopeful as I peer ahead, looking with anticipation towards a new year, a new beginning. Yet I often feel disillusioned as I look at the people around me. I know they’re out there, but sometimes I wonder: Where have all the dreamers gone?

I seem surrounded by people with little vision, little hope that there is, indeed, a golden age of peace ahead for humanity, the peace on earth that we sing about in our Christmas carols every year. But most have relegated that to mere wishful thinking along with the other childhood fairy tales. We don’t believe the editor’s response to the little girl (or little boy in all of us), “Yes, Elizabeth, there really is a Santa Claus.”

I ask myself, Does it have to be that way? Must we continue to accept the status quo of “fat cats” sitting at the top of the world ruling earth in their best interest alone? They seem to suck the very spirit out of humanity, operating all the social structures for their own gain and to maintain their own power. They feed us only the news that prevents us from knowing what goes on behind the scenes. If we want to peek behind the curtain, we have to set our minds to search out the “unofficial” media that does the real investigative reporting in search of truth. But most are too lazy for that endeavor, sitting in front of the TV for hours on end during whatever free time is available, or simply too caught up in the hustle and bustle of busy lives to take time to question and seek answers.

Did you know that one of our own United States Congressmen has submitted a bill before the House of Representatives to establish a cabinet level Department of Peace? At least fifty other members of congress have signed on to this legislation. It’s true; but how does it make you feel? What do you think about a man, running for president of the United States, who has the balls to propose such a venture as a major part of his platform? The mainstream media writes him off. Do you write him off too?

Why do so many of us think that: it has always been this way, and it always will be? Don’t we realize that as long as we believe that, it will never change?

And, lest you think that Dennis Kucinich is the only “fruitcake” out there, consider this. The General Assembly of the European Women's Lobby recently called on the European Union Commission to create the post of Commissioner for Peace; and a British committee also wants to see a Commission for Peace established in the United Kingdom, outside Parliament, which would bring together all the elements of civil society engaged in building a culture of peace to advise the government. (The information is out there for those who look for it.)

Good ideas whose time has come; or just more delusional dreamers believing they can really make a difference and change the course of history?

As we approach another new year, we have the opportunity to take action and make our voices heard. Or we can keep our heads in the sand, believing that those who plan wars in advance for their own profit must continue. We can refuse to believe that the real terrorists in this world are not poor impoverished people without much means, but are rather the powerful that create discontent as part of their agenda for world domination. They foster fear, knowing that fear incapacitates people. They cultivate dissent and strife, polarizing society around emotional issues that divert attention from the truth that they have long since destroyed effective democracy at the highest levels.

So what’s the solution? Grass roots level involvement! People must become informed and help get the message out. And what is the message? Let peace prevail on earth! It can happen if we believe and act. I believe there are multiple legions of “angels” willing and waiting to help. Oh, yes, I believe in all the fairy tales. I even believe in God, that good wins, that truth triumphs, and that light shines into darkness both to reveal and to disperse.

And, despite some of what I see around me, I believe the number of visionaries and dreamers is on the rise around the world. Peace on earth is coming; but it comes first to hearts like yours and mine. Will you allow the Divine Child, your quintessential nature, to lead you? Pray and meditate. Seek guidance; and for the sake of peace, communicate with those around you who want to make a difference and change the direction of humanity towards a sustainable future in which hope becomes reality. Then, take action together. Let peace prevail on earth!

Subject: Global Meditation: Manifesting First Contact

You are invited to participate in a global experiment to manifest First Contact with benevolent extraterrestrial races. The experiment is in response to a request by extraterrestrials to give a `soul based' response to the question,

"Do You Wish That We Show Up?"

The global First Contact experiment is based on the concept of the 'Isaiah Effect' popularized by the author Gregg Braden. The key idea in the 'Isaiah Effect' is that by visualizing a desired event and fully immersing oneself in positive emotions of the event as though it had occurred, a powerful energetic impulse is created that helps manifest the desired event in the concrete physical realm. The emotions of celebration, joy, love and gratitude thus act as powerful engines for 'thought creation'.

Due to over 50 years of secrecy over the extraterrestrial presence, and the tremendous damage done to human societies and the biosphere by the suppression of extraterrestrial technologies, creation of 'black budgets', and intimidation/silencing of officials/witnesses revealing the truth, there is an urgent need to end all secrecy over the extraterrestrial presence. Consequently, a world wide First Contact event where extraterrestrials 'show up' is needed to bring openness, transparency, truth and democratic decision-making to the way the extraterrestrial presence is officially managed. The actual details of the Global First Contact Experiment are as follows:

Visualization: Imagine luminous extraterrestrial ships suspended high over every city of the planet for a period of seven days and nights. The ships perform light displays that indicate universal greetings of peace, joy and fraternity. Ships play natural sounds such as whale songs indicating universal acknowledgement for cetaceans as an intelligent life form that has long communicated with extraterrestrial races. The visualization should be done in a way that elicits positive emotions such as joy, love and celebration. The visualization can be modified in ways that best inspire individuals to celebrate First Contact as a new era for humanity. The visualization will be performed at 10 pm in every time zone thereby creating an energetic wave of consciousness that sweeps around the planet. The length of the visualization should be between 5-10 minutes.

Date & Time: Sunday, December 21, at 10 pm (local time).

Results of the Experiment: You are invited to post any comments regarding personal experience on the Yahoo forum prepare4contact or you can simply email your comments to:

Subject: When we will do the same?
Date: 20 Dec 2003

My goodness, what wonderful news our PM had for us last night, delivered in such breathless tones, announced as a breaking news story that took the BBC by surprise.

So Gadaffi is to lay down all his weapons of mass destruction, after 9 months of talks with Britain and America hey? Well that is good. As our PM says- it will increase peace and security in the nation and the region. He also said it shows that a nation can change its course at any time it chooses as this shows. He also said it is a courageous move which has his support and approval.

So my question Mr Blair, as a British subject is this. When are we going to do the same? After all, we have lots of WMD. Surely our disarming would also make this nation and this region much safer. Surely it too would be a courageous move and as you say, a nation can change its course anytime it chooses. When are we and America going to have the courage and sense?

If your reply was as I suspect that it would not be safe or sensible for us to do so-what makes it safe for Libya to do so? What exactly is the difference? Go on, give us Brits a Christmas present we can justifiably have some pride in. It about time we did something that acted for the world as opposed to against it.

Editor's Note | It has been two years and three months since America absorbed the horrific attacks of September 11. A fight has been waged since then to determine the facts behind that terrible day: How did it happen? Why was it not stopped? The Bush administration has fought the official investigations into these attacks every step of the way, going so far as to nominate master secret-keeper Henry Kissinger to chair the investigation. They failed in this nomination, and wound up with former New Jersey Governor and fellow Republican Thomas Kean. Today, Kean has fired an incredible broadside across the bow of the White House, stating bluntly that the attacks of September 11 could have and should have been stopped, and that blame for this failure rests squarely on the shoulders of the Bush administration. - wrp

9/11 Chair: Attack Was Preventable

CBS News

For the first time, the chairman of the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks is saying publicly that 9/11 could have and should have been prevented, reports CBS News Correspondent Randall Pinkston.

"This is a very, very important part of history and we've got to tell it right," said Thomas Kean.

"As you read the report, you're going to have a pretty clear idea what wasn't done and what should have been done," he said. "This was not something that had to happen."

Appointed by the Bush administration, Kean, a former Republican governor of New Jersey, is now pointing fingers inside the administration and laying blame.

"There are people that, if I was doing the job, would certainly not be in the position they were in at that time because they failed. They simply failed," Kean said.

To find out who failed and why, the commission has navigated a political landmine, threatening a subpoena to gain access to the president's top-secret daily briefs. Those documents may shed light on one of the most controversial assertions of the Bush administration – that there was never any thought given to the idea that terrorists might fly an airplane into a building.

"I don't think anybody could have predicted that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile," said national security adviser Condoleeza Rice on May 16, 2002.

"How is it possible we have a national security advisor coming out and saying we had no idea they could use planes as weapons when we had FBI records from 1991 stating that this is a possibility," said Kristen Breitweiser, one of four New Jersey widows who lobbied Congress and the president to appoint the commission.

The widows want to know why various government agencies didn't connect the dots before Sept. 11, such as warnings from FBI offices in Minnesota and Arizona about suspicious student pilots.

"If you were to tell me that two years after the murder of my husband that we wouldn't have one question answered, I wouldn't believe it," Breitweiser said.

Kean admits the commission also has more questions than answers.

Asked whether we should at least know if people sitting in the decision-making spots on that critical day are still in those positions, Kean said, "Yes, the answer is yes. And we will."

Kean promises major revelations in public testimony beginning next month from top officials in the FBI, CIA, Defense Department, National Security Agency and, maybe, President Bush and former President Clinton.

Atlantic's salt balance poses threat, study says

The Globe and Mail - By ALANNA MITCHELL

December 18, 2003

The delicate salt balance of the Atlantic Ocean has altered so dramatically in the last four decades through global warming that it is changing the very heat-conduction mechanism of the ocean and stands to turn Northern Europe into a frigid zone.

The conclusions are from a study in the journal Nature that is to be published today. The study describes planet-scale changes in the regulatory function of the ocean that affect precipitation, evaporation, fresh-water cycles and climate.

"This has the potential to change the circulation of the ocean significantly in our lifetime," said Ruth Curry of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, the study's lead author.

The study catalogues profound changes in the salinity of the tropical and sub-tropical parts of the Atlantic Ocean. That part of the ocean is becoming saltier because higher average global temperatures are evaporating more ocean water than normal.

Over time, that water vapour travels north and south to the poles, where it eventually replenishes colder oceans. Because the overall salt content of the world's oceans is constant, this means that as the equatorial ocean becomes saltier, the oceans at the poles are becoming less salty and more fresh.

The implications of this are enormous. Until recently, scientists had no idea how critical salt levels in the oceans are to the hydrological cycle. They now understand that salinity is key to the ocean's ability to move warm water around the planet.

Under normal conditions, the saltier waters of the far north and south sink from the surface of the ocean to the deep abyss. Then they are pulled along the bottom of the ocean back to the equator. As that massive amount of water moves from north to south, warm water from the southern Gulf Stream moves north closer to the ocean's surface to fill the void. It's akin to a gigantic water conveyor belt.

That warm water pulled up to the north also warms the air. It is the reason England and Ireland are relatively balmy in winter and not frigid like southern Alaska, which is at the same latitude, said Professor Ransom Myers, holder of the Killam Chair in Ocean Studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax and a key researcher with the Census of Marine Life.

But as the waters of the far north become less salty, they lose their ability to sink from the surface of the ocean to the abyss. The conveyor belt is slowing down and may eventually stop.

"Northern Europe will likely experience a very significant cooling," Ms. Curry said, adding that it is expected to be in the order of 5 to 10 C cooler in winter in the course of 10 to 50 years, which is considered to be extremely rapid climate change.

The trend in Europe will run counter to that of most of the planet, which has been warming as greenhouse gases concentrate in the atmosphere. The last time Northern Europe recorded temperatures that cold was during the so-called little ice age that lasted from 1500 to about 1800, she said. If the ocean conveyor belt shuts down entirely, Northern Europe will become as cold as Alaska and is unlikely to be able to support as many people as it now does, Prof. Myers said. "We're changing the Earth in ways that are just inconceivably large." he said.

The problem is that this change feeds on itself and scientists don't know where it will stop, Ms. Curry explained. When water evaporates more quickly in the tropics -- as it is now from the effect of greenhouse gases that humans have emitted into the atmosphere -- that water vapour creates a greenhouse effect that helps to speed global climate change, including warming. In turn, that increases evaporation, which increases the greenhouse effect. And so on.

Climate: Back to Basics

Since 1992, the world has had a Convention on Climate Change. The signing and ratification of this convention implies obligations, both legal and moral. Most governments have already ratified it. However, after all these years, governments have little to show except for tons of paper resulting from endless negotiations.

The 9th Conference of the Parties (COP) recently ended in Milan, again without enough signatures being found to put the 1997 Kyoto Protocol into force. After six years, the Protocol, designed to curb industrialized countries' greenhouse emissions, still awaits the signatures of the United States, the world's main polluter, and Russia. Where does this leave us? Can nothing serious be done until these rogue states sign on? And must all campaigning efforts be centred on getting them to do so?

Surely it is time to start looking beyond and outside the Kyoto Protocol. Everyone knows that the world needs much more than this diluted treaty anyway -a treaty which would hardly cut emissions at all and which authorizes bogus "solutions" such as carbon sink tree plantations which would increase environmental problems without solving the issue of climate change itself.

We believe it is time for both civil society organizations and governments to learn the lessons of 11 years of virtual inaction and to move away from prevailing official approaches to climate change. There is a need to re-read the original Convention on Climate Change and begin to comply with it. To go back to basics to ensure that humanity has a future. The carbon-trading game must be set aside until real climate action has begun.

There remains a need for a legally-binding instrument to ensure that climate-related obligations are complied with. But many other things can be done now in all countries of the world to address climate change, while at the same time improving the livelihoods of local communities.

It must first be acknowledged that development is not synonymous with growth and that even growth is not synonymous with an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. We must all realize that the Northern development path leads to social and environmental disaster, including climate change. The South should not embrace that path, instead looking at alternative ways of achieving social welfare and environmental care. Such an approach could imply massive reductions in projected carbon emissions, currently calculated on the basis of the prevailing development paradigm.

Deforestation is not only unnecessary; it is a tragedy for forest and forest-dependent peoples. It is to the benefit of the South to conserve and restore its forests, which are currently being destroyed to serve the interests of national and transnational elites. Curbing deforestation would greatly benefit the climate -avoiding the release of the carbon stored in forests- while at the same time benefiting local communities. This can be achieved through national policies, ranging from land reform to recognition of indigenous peoples' territorial rights.

Oil, coal and gas exploitation in the tropics have resulted in widespread social and environmental impacts without bringing promised prosperity to the countries where fossil fuels are extracted. The carbon stored in hydrocarbons is the major source of greenhouse gases. A moratorium on new oil exploration would be a good first step toward avoiding climate change. If a small country like Costa Rica has been able to ban oil exploitation, other nations can, too. Clean, renewable and low-impact energy -particularly in industry and transport- would meanwhile be welcomed by millions of people living in the highly-polluted cities of the South.

The North, of course, has the obligation -and the ability- to do much more, given that its past and present material wealth has been based on abuse of the Earth's peoples and resources, including the abuse of the atmosphere that lies at the root of the climate change problem.

Among many other things, the North must use its financial, technological and scientific resources to move its own societies from a fossil fuel-dependent energy matrix to one based on clean, renewable and low-impact energy sources. The resources are there; what's needed is the political will that could be ensured through greater civil society involvement. The forces preventing this change are huge, with the oil industry at the forefront, and an equally strong opposition is needed to make things change in the necessary direction.

The above are only a few examples of the many things that could and should be done. People should begin to ask their governments why the necessary actions are not being taken. Why are we still living in 1992, when the issue was formally raised and action agreed upon? Why are governments still playing with our and our children's future? It is necessary to repeat the words of a well-known Indian religious leader, who asked government delegates during the previous Conference of the Parties held in New Delhi: "Whom do you think you are cheating? You are cheating your children; you are cheating your grandchildren."

The Most Explosive Documentary Film since Bowling for Columbine‚ TO BE RELEASED ON DVD ON 19 JANUARY 2004

The year 2000 brought the system of democracy in the United States to crisis point. After 8 years Democratic Party rule, America witnessed an extraordinary change of leadership. In LAST PARTY 2000, celebrated Hollywood actor PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN hosts a compelling exploration of the state of democracy in America, chronicling the sensational 2000 Presidential Elections and taking a journey deep in to the belly of American politics. LAST PARTY 2000 will be released exclusively on DVD in the UK on 19 January during the US 2004 Presidential Primaries.

Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine‚ brought documentary filmmaking into the public mainstream. LAST PARTY 2000 continues this trend as a fascinating and incendiary film that blows the lid off the American political system, Bowling for Bush‚ style. MICHAEL MOORE is one of a host of famous faces including TIM ROBBINS, SUSAN SARANDON and the REVEREND JESSE JACKSON who are interviewed by Hoffman as he guides us across the US political landscape, covering both the Democratic and the Republican National Conventions. The documentary includes footage of the protests surrounding these conventions and other events, as Americans take to the streets to make their voices heard. More humorous scenes include Hoffman and the crew gaining covert access to the Republican National Convention, by booking a rock band for the event - their friends The Interpreters who get to play the strangest gig of their lives.

Directed and produced by DONOVAN LEITCH and REBECCA CHAIKLIN, LAST PARTY 2000 poses fundamental questions about the future of US democracy, incorporating the opinions of a cross-section of Americans in their teens and 20s.

The DVD also features a fantastic soundtrack with live performances from bands including Bare Naked Ladies, Rage Against The Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Eddie Vedder and Willie Nelson.

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

- Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961

In the United States last year there were over 11,000 deaths by firearms. No other nation comes even close to matching this appetite for death. That is eight thousand more than died on 9/11, but about the same number as those innocent Iraqi civilians that perished by our actions in Gulf War II. And the costs to society from injuries and death due to firearms you ask? More than $60 billion. Those who produce instruments of death in this country are not ignorant, however; they know the statistics, they simply brush them aside. Profit, after all, is much more important than stopping Americans from arming themselves to the teeth and killing each other.

What else explains the gun lobby's attempts to go against common sense? The Second Amendment must be honored and preserved, they say, even if the Found ing Fathers lived in times of muskets, Indians, English threats and manifest dest iny, never imagining the killing power of today's firearms. It is no coincidence, then, that the same nation that allows so many of its citizens to die at the hands of loaded weapons would naturally export its appetite for human death abroad. Today, the U.S. is responsible for 40% of all worldwide weapons sales. Tanks, fighter jets, artillery, helicopters, missiles, landmines, machine

guns, mortars, bullets, grenades, guns, you name it, GunsRU.S. has it.

Our nation supplies the world in instruments of death.

The United States Military Industrial Complex (MIC) makes a killing from death, suffering and destruction. It exists only if people die. Its signature is everywhere; in the millions of landmines buried worldwide and the millions of amputee victims, many of them children. It can be seen in civil wars that rav age the developing world, from Africa to Asia to Latin America. From sea to s hining sea, our weapons we can see, from the exponentially growing threat of WMDs many of which were distributed at one time by our own government to the military hardware of tyrants and dictators, war criminals and warlords.

The MIC's front for assuring continual human violence is the US government, the Pentagon in particular. President Bush has just granted the Pentagon a military budget of $400 billion dollars for the next fiscal year. That's $400,000,000,000.00. This, of course, does not include our little warmongering expedition to the Fertile Crescent, which by last estimates had already cost an additional $160 billion more.

With so much of our money going to the Department of War one has to wonder where our priorities are. Certainly not in education, healthcare or in the creation of jobs. The Pentagon and the Military Industrial Complex are one and the same, having morphed over time to form the most lethal killing institution the world has ever seen. Through a sliding and revolving door that turns citizen soldiers into armament industry executives and company officers into military policy makers, the MIC has embedded itself into the military branch of the US government, there by assuring itself of unlimited contracts, access, information and profit.

Military industry executives and lobbyists have also slithered deep into top administration positions, occupying vitally important posts that decide national and for eign policy. Ex top government officials now sit on boards of today's biggest suppliers of military might.

One need only look to the Carlyle Group to find the marriage between government and MIC. George Bush the First had until recently sat on the board of this powerful yet clandestine group. This intertwined dancing tango of cronyism is exactly what Eisenhower warned about. Like a virus MIC has spread itself throughout the hallways of the Pentagon, penetrating from top to bottom through the disease called greed. Now one and the same, the Pentagon and MIC have a common interest, motive and ability to shape how funds are used and wars are waged. The Pent agon is the Department of War, not Defense. It is in business to kill, kill, and kill some more. Without war, violence and weapons there is no Pentagon.

And so to survive, to remain a player, wars must be created, weapons must be allocated, profits must be made and the Military Industrial Complex must continue exporting and manufacturing violence and conflict throughout the globe. And, as always, in the great tradition of the United States, enemies must exist. Indians, English, Mexicans, Spanish, Nazis, Koreans, Communists and now the everambiguous Terrorists. The Cold War came to an end and so too the great profits of the MIC. Reductions in the Pentagon budget threatened the lifeblood of the industry; a new enemy had to be unearthed. There is no war hence no profit without evildoers, without terrorists lurching at every corner, waiting patiently for the moment to strike, instilling fear into our lives, absorbing our attention.

We are told our nation is in imminent danger, that we are a mushroom cloud wait ing to happen. And so we fear, transforming our mass uneasiness into nationalistic and patriotic fervor, wrapping ourselves up in the flag and the Military Industrial Complex. We have fallen into the mouse trap, becoming the subservient slaves of an engine run by greed, interested not in peace but constant war, constant killing and constant sacrifice to the almighty dollar. Brainwashed to believe that War is Peace we sound the drums of war, marching our sons and daughters to a battle that cannot be won either by sword or gun.

We are programmed to see the world as a conflict between "Us" versus "Them", "Good" versus "Evil," that we must inflict death on those who are not with us and on those against us. The MIC prays on our human emotions and psychology, exploiting human nature and our still fragile memories of the horrors of 9/11, manipulating us to believe that what they say and do is right for us all. We unite behind one common enemy, fearing for our lives, complacent and obedient, blindly descending like a plague of locusts onto foreign land, devastating, usurping, conquering and devouring those who have been deemed enemies of the state, those who harbor and live among them, "evilones," "evildoers" and "haters of freedom," all for the sake of profit and pillage, ideology and empire.

Power unfettered and unleashed, our freedoms die and are released

The socalled "War on Terror" is but a charade, a fearengendering escapade, designed to last into perpetuity, helping guarantee that the Military Industrial Complex will grow exponentially in power. It is a replacement for a Cold War long ago since retired and unable to deliver a massive increase in defense spending. Terrorists and the countries that harbor them have replaced the Soviet Union and Communists as enemy number one. With a war that may go on indefinitely, pursuing an enemy that lives in shadows and in the haze of ambiguity, the MIC will grow ever more powerful, conscripting hundreds of thousands of our youth, sendi ng them to guide, operate and unleash their products of death.

Rumblings of bringing back the draft are growing louder, and if you think your children and grandchildren will escape it, think again. In a war without end, in battles that do not cease, the MIC will need human flesh from which to recycle those who perish and fall wounded. Empire building needs bodies and drones to go with military might, instruments of death need trigger fingers and human brains, and, with so many expendable young men and women being conditioned in this socalled "war on terror," MIC will continue its reprogramming of citizen soldiers from peaceful civilians to warmongering killing machines. After all, "War is Peace."

Yet the Department of War, ever steadfast to use its weaponry, fails to real ize that no amount of money will win this war if the root causes of terrorism are not confronted as priority number one. If you get to the roots, you pull out the weed. If not, it grows back again and again. But perhaps a perpetual war is what MIC has sought all along. A lifetime of combat, a lifetime of profit, a lifetime of power. Assembly lines of missiles, bombs, tanks and aircraft operate without pause, helping expand a sluggish economy and the interests of the Pax Americana. Pro fit over people, violence before peace, the American killing machine continues on its path to human extinction, and it is the hands and minds of our best and bright est building and creating these products of decimation.

While we look over our shoulders for terrorists and evildoers, the world ominously looks directly at us with both eyes intently focused on the armies of the "Great Satan" and the "Evil Empire," not knowing which nation will be attacked or on whom the storm of satelliteguidedmissiles will rain down on next. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In becoming preemptive warmongers, we are also becoming victims of our own making, helping assure a swelling wrath of revenge, resentment and retaliation against us. If we kill we will be killed, if we destroy we will be destroyed. The MIC is leading us down a steep canyon of fury, making us a pariah, a rogue country in the eyes of the world. We are becoming that which we fear most, a terrorist state.

As political scientist and ex marine C. Douglas Lummis has said, "Air bombard ment is state terrorism, the terrorism of the rich. It has burned up and blasted apart more innocents in the past six decades than have all the antistate terrorists who have ever lived. Something has benumbed our consciousness against this reality." Today we are seen, along with Israel, as the greatest threats to world peace. When hundreds of thousands throughout the planet call Bush "the world's number one terrorist," that less than admirable distinction is automatically imputed onto the nation as a whole and the citizens in particular.

This can be seen in the world's perception and treatment of us today.

When the day comes, not too far in the future, when one of our metropolitan cities goes up in a mushroom cloud or in a vapor of suffocation or when tens of thousands of citizens die of biological or chemical demons, we must dive deep into our national psyche and question why we allowed those in power to guide us down the road of cause and effect, action and reaction. And, in the end, we must realize that those same WMDs we once so gleefully created and exported have come back to our shores, haunting us and our children for the suffering we have helped spread onto the world through our idleness, impotence to act and automatonlike acquiescence.

Can you imagine spending $400 billion dollars to alleviate poverty in the Middle East, helping to educate millions who now get instructed by hatespewing madrassas? Can you imagine spending $400 billion dollars to fight terror at its roots rather than at its extensions, helping to improve the lives of millions who today have nothing to live for, except martyrdom? Wouldn't $400 billion dollars go furt her than perpetual bloodshed in the insidious war on terror if we alleviated the suffering, ignorance and poverty of the world' poor, the roots of terrorism by helping to provide jobs, education and medicines which would in turn spawn a sense of goodwill towards the U.S.?

Could it be remotely possible that our foreign policy, our support for puppet dictators and monarchs, our quest for empire and resources and our unyielding military, financial and political support of the dehumanization of the Palestinian people by Israel all leads to the subjugation, injustice, humiliation and misery of hundreds of millions of people? Could this be why we are so hated throughout a world where billions have nothing while we bathe in the spoils of abundance?

As long as MIC acts in our name, as long as it plunders humanity we will be hated. Ghandi once said that "an eye for an eye only leads to more blindness." If that is so, then our nation is on a collision course with an ominous black hole whose darkness we shall not escape and whose exit we will never again see.

Saddam, So Not Worth It (By Mark Morford Dec 17)
Dubya, now that you've got your dime-store thug, can you stop the warmongering and death? Well gosh golly it took only upward of 500 dead U.S. soldiers (and counting) and more than 2,500 U.S. wounded (and counting) and more than 10,000 dead innocent Iraqi citizens (and counting) and countless tens of thousands of hapless dead Iraqi soldiers (and counting). And it'll only cost U.S. taxpayers at least a staggering $350 billion along with the complete gutting of our foreign policy and our national treasury and the appalling blood sacrifice of our national pride and our international status and global sense of self-respect. Oh, and the truth is, it turns out Saddam actually did have some old stashes of weaponry, a bit of rusty, small-scale WMDs, after all -- because we sold them to him, 20 years ago. But they were never any sort of direct danger to America -- or anyone else, for that matter -- and, besides, all evidence points to the fact that the stash was completely destroyed more than a decade ago. Sharon's Speech: Tissue of Lies and Half-Truths His "Plan" - Recipe for War and Annexation

"Ariel Sharon's speech of today is a masterpiece of misrepresentation, half-truths and outright lies," Gush Shalom declared immediately afterwards. "The polished formulations are hiding the clear intent of annexing more than half the West Bank, while giving up a few far-away and isolated settlements that are the army consider as a burden."

As examples of blatant untruths, Gush Shalom cites:

1. Sharon: The Road Map demands that the Palestinians eliminate terrorism, and that only afterwards Israel is requested to fulfil its obligations. The truth: The Road Map demands that Israel starts to fulfil its obligations at once, simultaneous with and independent of the steps to be taken by the Palestinians.

2. The Road Map demands from Israel to remove "unlicensed outposts". The truth: The Road Map demand from Israel to remove ALL settlements set up after January 2001.

3. Sharon: The Road Map allows Israel to build inside the "built-up area" of the settlements. The truth: The Road Map forbids any building activity in the settlements. The "built up areas" of the settlements have been planned in advance in such a way that tens of thousands of new houses can be built there.

4. Sharon: Lately we have made life much easier for the Palestinians. The truth: While life was intolerable even before, it has become much worse lately. Almost no checkpoint has been removed, free movement is impossible, and, worst of all, the "separation fence" has cut off hundred thousands of Palestinians from their sources of livelihood as well as from their schools, hospitals, universities and even cemeteries.

5. Sharon: The "separation fence" is necessary for security. The truth: The present path of the barrier is not separating Israelis from Palestinians, but Palestinians from Palestinians, in order to imprison them in more than a dozen isolated enclaves.

6. Sharon: A "contiguous" Palestinian state will be set up. The truth: Between the enclaves that Sharon is creating by the "separation fence" and other means, there is no real contiguity. Sharon promises to connect the enclaves by artificial means like bridges, roads and tunnels that can be cut off by the army at any moment.

The removal of some outlying settlements is demanded by the army, which does not have enough forces to defend them. Sharon uses the promise of their removal as an alibi for annexing practically all of "Area C", which comprises more than half of the West Bank.

Sharon under fire for separation plan (20 December 2003),2106,2763909a12,00.html
JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has drawn criticism in Israel and abroad over his plan to unilaterally separate from Palestinians if peace talks fail. The scheme would deny Palestinians land they want for a state and keep them behind a controversial barrier through the West Bank, but would also involve shifting Jewish settlers away from Palestinian population centres to shorten security lines.

Sherif Hetata analyses the forces -- religious, corporatist and militarist -- that are busily earmarking funds to buy George W Bush a second term and underwrite an emerging "Pax Israelica"

I am writing from the living room of my apartment on Peaks Island, near the coast of Maine in the northeastern corner of the United States. From my window I can see the calm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Living for some time in the US has also allowed me to follow the successive waves of influence of a powerful Zionist wing within the Bush administration, how it has built up an alliance with the strong and active Christian fundamentalist movement, and to realise what is being planned for the future of the Middle East.

Bush is already preparing for the 2004 presidential campaign and has been able to collect $200,000,000 for it. The most active supporters of his campaign will be Zionist forces, the Christian fundamentalist movement and the Catholic right. Together they constitute a powerful electoral force buttressed by multinationals -- especially those involved in arms manufacturing, in oil, in the pharmaceutical industry and in the media -- as well as many higher levels in the armed forces in a country undergoing rapid militarisation. Kanan Makiya, an Iraqi based in Washington, DC and a member of the Iraqi National Council headed by Ahmed Chalabi, commenting on the projected war against Iraq a few months before it was launched, said "The removal of Saddam Hussein presents the United States in particular with a historic opportunity that I believe is going to prove to be as large as anything that has happened in the Middle East since the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the entry of the British troops into Iraq in 1917."

As many now know, in 1996 a group of neo-conservatives with declared Zionist leanings and links to the Israeli Likud Party joined together to prepare a report for Benjamin Netanyahu, then prime minister of the Likud government. The group was headed by Richard Perle, a former assistant secretary in the State Department under former President Ronald Reagan, and a member of the Defence Policy Board which advises current Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. The ad hoc committee included Douglas Feith, now an assistant secretary for Policy in the Ministry of Defence, David Wurmser from the Middle East division of the American Enterprise Institute and the International Association for Security Policy Studies, the latter's president Robert Loewenburg, Meyrav Wurmser, David Wurmser's wife from the Middle East Media Research Institute run by retired Israeli military and intelligence officers and which includes as one of its main functions translating Arab media as well as statements made by Arab politicians and statesmen. Jonathan Torop from The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a member of the board of governors of the Middle East Forum (directed by Daniel Pipes, the pro-Israeli analyst and member of the presidentially- appointed board of the US Institute of Peace), as well as other high level political experts with overt Zionist links. The report was prepared for the high powered Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA), which serves as a coordinating body for the activities of the various Zionist organisations in the US.

Its recommendations, presented to Netanyahu, were as follows: 1) Make a "clear break" with the policy of negotiating with the Palestinians and attempts to exchange "land for peace". 2) Israel should shape its "strategic" environment by weakening, containing and even "rolling back" Syria. 3) Iraq's future can be made to affect the strategic balance in the Middle East profoundly. 4) The principle of "preemption" should be reestablished. These guidelines for Israeli policy are being put into practice in the US under George W Bush, and by the government of Israel under Ariel Sharon. As regards the principle of "preemptive strikes" it would not be far fetched to say that it is in part Likud inspired, if we remember that the first "preemptive" strike on an Arab country was directed by Israel against the Iraqi nuclear reactor more than 20 years ago.

The presence of a powerful Zionist influence in the American administration is not new. However, in the present administration high level post appointments to Zionists have gained a striking ascendancy, and have eliminated any Arab leanings to speak of, even though the oil connections of the Bush family, of Vice President Dick Cheney, of National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, and others, continue to play an important role. Neo-conservative Zionist politicians and rhetoricians today occupy key positions. Top of the list comes Paul Wolfowitz. He is the deputy undersecretary to Donald Rumsfeld, yet is considered by many to be more influential than his boss. Others include Richard Perle and Douglas Feith, mentioned above, Lewis Libby, Cheney's chief of staff, Peter Rodman and Dov Zakheim, whom both occupy sub- cabinet rank appointments in the Ministry of Defence, John Bolton, undersecretary for arms procurements at the State Department, Eliot Abrams, an Iran-Contra convict appointed by President Bush to be in charge of Middle East Affairs in the National Security Council, and David Frum, of the right-wing American Enterprise Institute and who coined the term "Axis of Evil" for use in presidential speeches. James Woolsey, former head of the CIA, and Jeane Kirkpartick, Reagan's ambassador to the United Nations, are also present. And let's not forget William Kristol, the editor of the Evening Standard (owned by Rupert Murdoch, the Australian media magnate who owns Fox News, which boasts over 100 million viewers), and a co-founder of the neo-conservative imperial "Project for a New American Century".

All these high level policy makers believe that US interests in the Middle East coincide largely with those of Israel and as a result the policies of the present administration and the measures it takes should be directed towards making the area "safe" for the self-proclaimed Jewish state. In the neo-conservative strategy papers drawn up six years ago "making the Middle East safe for Israel" meant "redefining Iraq" after "getting rid of Saddam Hussein and his tyrannical regime", transforming of the Middle East by "redrawing its map", including "regime changes" of governments in the area not completely in line with "American and Israeli interests", "nurturing alternatives to Arafat" and "the end of the Israeli- Palestinian peace process". The enthusiasm with which Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others have adopted this stance means that America is now throwing all its weight behind a "Pax Israelica"; behind a total subordination of Arab countries to the predominance of Israel as part of a new imperial plan. It means that Bush's declarations about two states, Israeli and Palestinian, or the "roadmap", or other "non-proposals" of the kind are just smokescreens, or manoeuvres aimed at gaining time until "Sharon" has done his job of "cleansing" Palestine, or of imposing total subjugation on a Palestinian "Bantustan".

Meanwhile the US thinks it can go on with executing the rest of the neo-conservative plan for a permanent military presence in Iraq -- which will guarantee the flow of oil -- with other "preemptive strikes" against Syria (where Sharon has already directed a "symbolic" raid), or against Iran, or any other country in the area where disobedience might grow, or which could constitute a potential threat to US-Israeli interests as visualised by the rulers of those two countries.

Although all these policy nightmares might appear to many people as exaggerated, what has happened since the 11 September attack on the World Trade Centre (which gave the Bush administration the possibility to go ahead with these plans) should alert the peoples of our region and the world to how far the Bush administration is prepared to go. "Preemptive strikes" in the minds of those who developed the concept as policy does not mean waiting until a country has developed nuclear, biological or chemical weapons capable of "mass destruction". It exacts the right to strike at any country which has "the potential" to eventually produce such weapons; in other words at any country with a modicum of development, since the production of chemical and biological weapons in particular is not so difficult an undertaking. This is tantamount to declaring that our societies will not be allowed to develop further, nor allowed to voice any opposition to the United States. They must remain "backward" and "obedient".

So after Iraqi oil has been privatised, the resistance of the Iraqi people quelled (if that is possible), and a permanent military base established, the Bush administration can move on to another stage. A report suggesting military action against Syria was circulated and released three years ago. The signatures on the report included Elliot Abrams, chosen specially by Bush to deal with "democracy and human rights" in the Middle East, according to his official job description within the National Security Council. Signing with him were Douglas Feith, Richard Perle, David Steinmann (chairman of JINSA), David Wurmser and Michael Rubin (the latter both senior consultants to the Pentagon and State Department on policies related to Iraq). All these men are neo-conservative, Zionist supporters of Israel with strong ties to Likud.

On Monday 21 October 2003 Paul Wolfowitz received an award from the Centre for Security Policy chaired by Frank Gaffney, a notorious Zionist and neo-conservative. In his speech Wolfowitz concentrated on the "war against terror". Iraq he said had become a breeding ground for terror from which it could spread to "countries around" and to many other parts of the globe. But things will not stop at Syria or Iran. Next can come changes in the geopolitical structure of Saudi Arabia, seizing of the oil fields and dismantling the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Then, or perhaps at the same time, will come Egypt's turn, for Egypt with its population, its potentialities, although weakened considerably, is still seen as a threat to Israel. Maybe a North Egypt/South Egypt divide built on fomenting religious strife well be how it goes. For then, and only then, in the minds of neo-conservative empire planners can US-Israeli domination rule undisturbed and the Pax Israelica become a fact of life. It's not so far fetched. In August 2002 Richard Perle discussed a policy briefing presented by a study group commissioned by the Rand Corporation. The final slide in the presentation described "Iraq as the tactical pivot, Saudi Arabia as the strategic pivot and Egypt as the prize."

What might appear as the wild fantasy of a neo-conservative, military-industrial cabal, enjoys the full approval of a sizeable, active sector of American society. Zionist circles are now closely allied to a powerful fundamentalist movement which has grown noticeably since Reagan was in power, more than 20 years ago. This coupled with the relative passivity of a silent majority in the US increases the dangers we face.

The most zealous Christian supporters of the Likud in the Republican electorate are Southern Protestant, Baptist, Evangelical and other fundamentalist followers. By the 1994 Congressional elections Christian conservatives cast two of every five Republican votes. This religious right believes that God gave all of Palestine to the Jews. Fundamentalist congregations and fundamentalist business circles have collected hundreds of millions of dollars to subsidise Jewish settlements in the occupied territories. The Zionists in the Bush administration have helped to speed up the growth of a messianic strain of Christian fundamentalism which considers warfare between Israelis and Arabs as ordained by God, and complete occupation and domination of Palestine as a necessary condition for the fulfilment of the Biblical "millennium" End of Days, and the appearance of the Messiah who will rule the world for one thousand years from Jerusalem.

These right-wing extremists exert a considerable influence in the Bush administration. The result is that Jewish fundamentalists struggling to impose Israeli domination, and Christian fundamentalists working for the so-called "millennial" End of Days, strengthen one another and increase the changes of a religious war. They are allied for an agenda which aims at implementing a vast imperial restructuring of the Middle East, reinforced by multinationals pirating for oil and the tremendous powers exercised by people like Bush, Cheney and Condoleezza Rice.

Irrespective of a few symbolic declarations from the Bush administration meant to help justify the craven policies of Arab regimes obedient to the United States in the eyes of the Arab peoples, and to encourage the illusion that the "peace process" is still alive, Sharon therefore has powerful support from the United States. Only recently, on two occasions, John Negroponte, the US representative in the UN Security Council, vetoed two resolutions promoted by the Arab States. The first resolution called on Israel to cease building the "wall" separating it and the scattered enclaves meant to "imprison" the Palestinians on limited areas of their land. The second was a resolution condemning the Israeli aerial bombing of Syria. These vetoes have underlined the collapse of the "roadmap" comedy initiated by Bush. The building of the "wall" or "fence" composed of an armoured zone of ditches, fences, sensors, and dirt roads for tracking footprints goes ahead. It is 28 feet high in places. It occupies, steals and divides Palestinian farmland. It destroys Palestinian villages, homes and livelihoods. It costs one million dollars for each mile.

Recently, during the third week of October, there were two simultaneous raids on Rafah separated by two days -- the biggest raids in many months. The first raid killed eight people, two of whom were children, and made 100 homeless. The second killed another eight people, wounded scores and destroyed 1,000 homes by bulldozers or rockets and made over 1,200 people homeless. The Israelis in order to clear space between the "fence" and Rafah had already previously razed 620 homes. Meanwhile, the Herut- offspring minister in Sharon's cabinet, Ehud Olmert, proposed that Yasser Arafat be assassinated to be rid of him once and for all. On 16 September 2003 the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution asking Israel to desist from its threats to deport him. Israel continues to build new settlements or expand old ones, and to change the face of Jerusalem. Palestinians are being steadily corralled into shrinking Bantustans and made to subsist on grossly inadequate European or other-country aid.

As the days go by it has become clear that Sharon has no intention of dismantling the settlements and handing back occupied territory to the Palestinians. There are a quarter of a million heavily armed, and heavily subsidised, Israeli settlers in these territories and their numbers are growing. Most of these settlers are prepared to kill if they are asked to, and many of them are hard-headed fundamentalists with a terrorist streak. Israel has consistently and blatantly refused to respect UN resolutions demanding withdrawal from the occupied territories. Israel is also the only Middle Eastern state known to possess genuine and lethal weapons of mass destruction. Israel under Sharon has decided to keep control of the "occupied territories", and to get rid of the overwhelming majority of the Arab-Palestinian population either by violence and forcible expulsion, or by depriving them of any means of livelihood so that in the face of starvation they choose to leave. Israel knows that with the Iraqi war the United States under Bush has finally decided to destabilise the Middle East and reconfigure the region in a manner that would be favourable to her.

If there are still people who think that Sharon's ethnic plans are unthinkable they should try to follow the steady erosion of opposition to these plans during the past years within Israel itself. They should also remember the steady increase in land settlements and land seizures over the past 25 years, and the many statements made by right-wing Israeli politicians and generals at the helm. The peace process is in its death throes. As Arabs, we must seriously assess the magnitude of the forces our people face. Only then might we address not merely prudently, but realistically, the issue of supporting the Palestinian resistance.

Maybe I have painted a rather bleak and frightening picture of what the peoples of our region face. I realise that such a picture can become counter productive in the struggle against neo- imperialist forces. These forces are intent on convincing us that they are so powerful, so overwhelming that there is no use trying to resist. If they succeed in doing so truly all is lost. But numerous peoples all over the world have become, or are becoming convinced that resistance is desirable, and possible, and that their resistance sooner or later will prevail. People who think that way do not limit themselves to remembering the massive pre-war demonstrations that broke out before America and the United Kingdom launched their attack against Iraq. On 25 October 2003 a new wave of demonstrations swept through streets in countries including the US. Already, things are not going entirely according to the neo-imperialist plan.

Bush was hoping that resistance to his aggressive policies would be vanquished by the exercise of overwhelming military force first in Afghanistan but more importantly in Iraq. Once the Iraqi army was crushed the US occupation forces would be able to destroy, coerce or bribe any potential resistance. Then the Bush administration could move quickly to privatise Iraqi oil and engage its next "major theatre" wars against Syria, Iran, North Korea, and others. But what is happening in Afghanistan is largely surrounded by silence. The truth is that apart from Kabul the occupation forces control nothing. The rest is divided up among the warlords, but more significant is the fact that the Taliban are steadily regaining control of important parts of the land they had lost, and that US forces there are facing something akin to the war of attrition that sapped the lifeblood of the Soviets for 10 years until their final, ignominious withdrawal in February 1989.

However, the more pressing problem is Iraq. With 150,000 troops stationed in the country, attacks against the occupation forces are spreading, control is loosening and difficulties are increasing. American families are losing their sons. General Anthony Zinni, former head of the Central Command of US military forces, asks "Are we facing another Vietnam?" as the "resistance fighters" gain more experience and versatility, and as popular resistance expresses itself in a variety of ways. Some of these "fighters" may be coming from other places, some of them may be fundamentalists but the majority come from the ranks of the Iraqi people who for so long have had it the hard way. The chances of an early withdrawal is becoming more and more remote as the period of active service for troops is continuously extended. A month or so ago a small item appeared in The New York Times announcing that new forces would be recruited for the National Guard and the Reserves, upon whom the US government draws in composing the Iraqi occupation forces.

With a total national deficit which has reached almost half-a-trillion (500 million) dollars the Bush administration asked for, and got, an extra $87 billion for "Emergency Spending" on Iraq and Afghanistan. This is in addition to the first instalment of $75 billion granted previously by Congress (the first Gulf war in 1991, by comparison, cost $9 billion, paid mainly by the Gulf countries). The occupation of Iraq costs $6 billion a month, shouldered by American taxpayers in a situation where they face growing economic difficulties. In 2002 the number of unemployed rose by 1,350,000, and the number of those who were no longer covered by health insurance increased by two million. All at a time when the rich are paying less taxes.

All these factors, combined with a rapid loss of whatever civil liberties and democratic rights were enjoyed by American citizens, is reflected in recent "opinion polls" which show that in the past six months those supporting the "war policies" of the Bush administration have dropped from 70 per cent to 49 per cent. The Bush administration is therefore facing mounting pressures which make a military blow against Syria or Iran more unlikely, although some neo- conservatives in the administration seem to think that the policy of the "worst" gives them a freer hand to follow the path they have chosen. Besides, Israel is always there to act as a proxy with full US support.

BAGHDAD (Plausible News Service) -- The apparent arrest of Saddam Hussein brought a traumatic chapter in the millennia-long history of Mesopotamia to an end earlier today, with immediate and wide-ranging effects being felt throughout the country. Flowers spontaneously erupted across vast stretches of Iraqi desert. Power and water service were restored to millions of Iraqi homes, some of which have never had it in the first place. "My cable is working again! I can get Bravo channel now! They must have arrested Saddam!" cried a jubilant Walid al-Jibra, dancing in the street in front of his formerly bombed-out store, which was found miraculously restored moments after the announcement.

Kurds, Shiites, and Sunnis alike were seen joyfully embracing in Basra, while a number of children previously thought to have been killed during the invasion were found to be alive and perfectly healthy. Hospitals reported increases in stocks of medicines, "but hey, we don't need them anyway, half our patients just got up and walked away," according to one staffer.

A statement released by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden acknowledged the defeat for the radical Islamic movement signified by the Saddam arrest. "Oh well, we might as well just hang it up, as you say," said the emaciated terrorist leader on a video broadcast by al-Jazeera television shortly after the arrest announcement. "This just shows that you can't mess around with the ol' US of A."

Troops met the news with relief. "Well, I am sure enough glad that's all over with," said Sgt. Paul Tarbabe of Tuskeegee, as he began packing his gear for the return home. "Just in time, too -- we oughta all be able to get back home for Christmas now. I've got a six-month-old daughter to meet!"

Donald Rumsfeld and senior Pentagon officials have indicated that with Saddam out of the picture, "our work here is finished," as Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz told a press briefing at the Pentagon early this morning. Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and other officials, for whom the planning and execution of the Iraq operation has been an obsession for years, intend to retire next week and "set up a think tank in Samoa or someplace like that," Wolfowitz said.

The forecast for Baghdad for today and the foreseeable future is sunny, with bright blue skies, a few fluffy white clouds, warm but comfortable temperatures, and copious bird songs.
