Defeating the U.S. War Plans Series #18: The Manufacturing of Consent for War

Hello everyone

There is just so much happening right now with the feverish U.S./UK war preparations around Irak and the various efforts to derail this mad cruelty...

With the transatlantic row Monday over the defiant French/German/Russian plan to boost the inspection regime in Iraq instead of rubberstamping the military onrush into Baghdad - and into a humanitarian/environmental/geopolitical quagmire such that the world has never seen anything like it before! - it now becomes almost certain that the United States and Britain won't be able to hide their naked agression behind the fig leaf of a UN Security Council approval of military action to disarm Iraq.

What is also very revealing of their desperation is to see all the fear-mongering their CNN and other corporate media mouthpieces are doing in a last ditch attempt to cow enough Americans into a submissive acceptance of the necessity of Gulf War II.

In this Internet age, manufacturing consent is no longer as easy as it used to be ;-)

"A third-rate intelligence team could have done it," said Iraqi General Amer Al-Saadi, Chief Science advisor to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in his refute of U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's "evidence" before the U.N. Security Council. The world was holding its breath as it waited for what the U.S. would provide as proof that Iraq was withholding illicit bio-weapons, is a threat to the U.S. and is complicit with al-Qaeda. While the world listened to Powell, Arabs found the alleged intercepted phone conversations troublesome. US Claim Dismissed by Blix (Feb 5),2763,889135,00.html
The chief UN weapons inspector yesterday dismissed what has been billed as a central claim of the speech the US secretary of state, Colin Powell, will make today to the UN security council. Hans Blix said there was no evidence of mobile biological weapons laboratories or of Iraq trying to foil inspectors by moving equipment before his teams arrived. (...) He also contested the theory that the Iraqis knew in advance what sites were to be inspected. He added that they expected to be bugged "by several nations" and took great care not to say anything Iraqis could overhear. (...) Dr Blix is travelling to Baghdad for further meetings with Iraqi officials before reporting to the security council on February 14 and March 1. He said the choice for the UN was between continued containment and invasion. Both strategies had problems, but an invasion required 250,000 troops and over $100bn while for containment the numbers were 250 inspectors and $80m.

Bush the Historian: "The Past is Over" (Feb 7)
Remembering the "War in the Gulf" on TV - Now that a new George Bush has placed himself on the road to military action against an old Asian enemy, perhaps it is a good time to revisit the last time that "WAR" was screamed continuously across our television screens. Back in 1991, the media and the last President Bush rallied the nation to support Operation Desert Storm by carefully framing the action in terms of powerful cultural categories, and in the process they took steps towards reworking the meaning of another key American conflict-the Vietnam war-and forced critical voices to operate from impossibly weak positions. Now, as an even more omnipresent television news machine creates the frameworks to support the destruction of "evil" people and "terrorist" states in distant lands, this time under the catch phrases "Countdown: Iraq" and "Target: Iraq" rather than the now nostalgic "War in the Gulf," those of us who try to disseminate alternatives to mass violence may be able to learn from the devices that were effectively used to immobilize us the last time around. Sometimes the political slants of news providers are as obvious as the smirks on the faces of Fox News "reporters" or "analysts" as they hector a Palestinian spokesman or liberal fall guy. One approach to understanding these biases traces the corporate interests-Disney, General Electric, etc.-that control media outlets. Another looks at fabricated stories, such as the great Kuwait Incubator hoax, and direct military censorship. But sometimes media biases are more subtle, and may operate independently from the intentions of individual reporters. CLIP

Government plagiarised Iraq data

etc., etc.

Why does little or no real or truthful news related to 9/11, Iraq or Bush appear in US corporate media?

9/11 was allowed to happen and very few reported it, though several predicted exactly what is happening now, from smallpox to North Korea. They've gone for broke, those controlling the Bush administration. What kind of terror event is the US (and related foreign powers) provoking or planning now?

News of Bogus UK Intelligence Report Sweeping the Planet (Feb 6)

Blair Government Facing Imminent Crisis - Revelation May Speed Up Iraqi Invasion. Britain's Intelligence Dossier on Iraq was Plagiarized from a Grad Student.
(...) Iraq described by the graduate student is not the Iraq of 2003 but the Iraq of 1991. So glaring was the theft of intellectual property that the official British document even cut and pasted whole verbatim segments of the research paper, including grammatical errors, and presented the findings as the result of intense work by British intelligence services. U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell both praised and quoted that same British report in his presentation at the United Nations yesterday. It is important that readers see and understand the enormity of this violation of public trust for themselves. The story was first broken by Britain's Channel 4 today and it is appearing in more papers and web sites by the hour. The following links lead directly to the Channel 4 story, to the British "intelligence" report and to the original student paper. What was also disclosed was that certain portions of the academic report were altered by the PM Tony Blair to make them more inflammatory. In one cited instance Blair changed "aiding opposition groups" to "supporting terrorists."

The Channel 4 story is at:

The Official UK intelligence report is at:

The original student research paper is located at:

In the context of merely preventing or slowing a war with Iraq this would be earth shattering news. But in a world that is slowly beginning to feel the pressure of and admit the reality of dwindling global oil supplies the fallout from the story may actually accelerate hostilities. British Prime Minister Tony Blair will be, by tomorrow, facing monumental challenges in both Parliament and from British public opinion that is overwhelmingly opposed to an Iraqi invasion. The event could be enough to topple his government and cause new elections which might well result in a new government that is not mind-melded with the Bush administration.

(...) These are incredibly dangerous times, made more so because there is no turning back for the Bush administration. This story is incredible proof of the cynicism, dishonesty and callousness of the tyrants pushing the world toward destruction. And Iraq is merely the first stop on a sequential plan for control of the last remaining oil reserves on the planet.

Feb. 10, 2003

I couldn't make this up. Five days ago, the man who covered up the MyLai massacre was on a roll. Addressing the UN Security Council and a worried wired world, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell repeatedly remonstrated, "Every statement I make today is backed up by sources, solid sources. These are not assertions. What we're giving you are facts and conclusions based on solid intelligence."

Hot stuff! The globally-televised 75 minute briefing put forward Washington's best case for massacring a defenseless population, still reeling from the last big American bombardment, and 11 years of strangulating sanctions that followed.

"Here is the evidence," ranted a righteous Powell at tight-lipped representatives from 15 nations, who may also have been listening to the ghostly chorus of 38 million Europeans killed during World War II.

"Ignore it and become irrelevant as a world body whose strongest resolutions have been consistently ignored by Israel throughout our ally's 35 year illegal occupation of the West Bank," Powell puffed. "Or join our unprovoked aggression against the people of Iraq and become irrelevant for violating international laws -- just like Americans do all the time in places like Nicaragua, Guatemala, Cuba, Colombia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Kuwait, Bosnia and Afghanistan."

I'm paraphrasing here...

Powell called Blair's intelligence scoop "a fine paper" of "exceptional quality" that detailed "Iraq's deceptions." The U.S. Secretary of State went on to praise a pompous Prime Minister for supplying what Blair boasted was an "up to the minute" assessment of Saddam's sadistic arsenal.

The latest information on Iraq's elusive weapons programs came from Britain's vaunted intelligence services, MI5 and MI6. Anyone on the Net could punch in Downing Street's official website and check out all 19 pages of intelligence available to London concerning "Iraq's Infrastructure of Concealment, Deception and Intimidation". [BBC Feb. 5, 2003]

Within hours of Powell's pronouncements, TV crews descended on the "chemical weapons sites" featured in his presentation -- only to find old dust atop ancient rubble. The reason was revealed the following morning, when the BBC's Channel 4 reported, "Downing St. Dossier Plagiarized".

Plagiarism is a form of theft. It turns out that Powell's "top intelligence" briefing to the UN had been lifted verbatim from a woefully outdated student thesis! [BBC Feb. 6, 2003]

They're just getting started.

Cancer rates across Iraq -- particularly among children -- are already 12 to 15 times higher than pre-war levels. For the people of Iraq, as well as any occupier, constant exposure to uranium dust from hundreds of tons of Depleted Uranium munitions fired during Desert Storm (and hundreds of tons more from any new invasion) carries lethal risks. DU is 60% as radioactive as the uranium used in nuclear bombs. It enters human lungs, wombs and DNA as easily as it does open wounds and the food chain. And exploded DU rounds remain lethal for millions -- some experts say billions -- of years. [Bringing The War Home]

Now the boys around Bush are keen to try out their new "Robust Earth Penetrators" by gang-raping Iraq. (You're right, it's obscene.) These cosseted men, who have never been near a battlefield or seen the dazed expressions of maimed children, figure their "little" nuclear bombs will burrow far enough into their mother planet to stop radiation from leaking out and freaking out the entire world. [Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sept. 29, 2002]

But common sense and many experts warn that a more likely scenario would see "dirty" detonations raining a radioactive dust storm downwind, killing plenty of people in mosques and souks in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or Iran -- depending on whether the Shamal is blowing. Entire regions would be rendered uninhabitable for tens of thousands of years.

But hey, say Rumsfeld and others who pushed for the "baby nukes", we won't know till we try it.

Just like Hiroshima.

To everyone following this global cliffhanger, it looks like we're coming quickly down to a tripwire that could capsize the global applecart. Within weeks, a conscienceless Frankenstein armed with wicked weapons of mass destruction may be once again loose in our midst.

Or maybe not.

For all their firepower and media mesmerization techniques, the Bush junta never reckoned on running head on into an uncontrollable source of constantly updated, augmented and corroborated information available 24/7 to anyone who can log online.

No one did.

For the first time in known human history, power-crazed bureaucrats are finding it difficult to get away with almost anything. In this truth-telling time of personal camcorders and computers, exposure of official deceptions can be embarrassingly swift -- posted on the web for a whole wide wired world to see.

If you can type it, you can probably find it online: Flight 800, Oklahoma City, Gulf War Illness, Operation Northwoods, the "sober drunk" syndrome. The real stories behind official mythology can be found in leaked documents, declassified papers, eyewitness accounts, expert commentary, fully referenced mainstream and alternate news stories, magazines and e-books, news photos, video footage and recorded interviews. All are available in an instantly accessible, exponentially-expanding, electronic library called the Internet.

Forget B-52s. Real power comes from networked hominids tapping keyboards. As a Secretary of State discovered, all it takes to verify an official "story" is to go online and type in a few key search words. Try "powell presentation" or "bush cocaine" -- then hit the key appropriately labeled "Enter".

The results can be spectacular. Thanks to a Cambridge professor's recollection and online retrieval, Bush's only buddy willing to send reluctant soldiers into the irradiated ruins of Baghdad could face a humiliating non-confidence vote within days.

Former Labour minister Glenda Jackson told BBC Radio 4, "If that was presented to Parliament and the country as being up-to-date intelligence and in fact as we now know they simply lifted it from a university thesis, it is another example of how the Government is attempting to mislead the country and Parliament on the issue of a possible war with Iraq."

Another former Labour minister, Peter Kilfoyle, said he was "shocked" at the way the dossier had been doctored. "It just adds to the general impression that what we have been treated to is a farrago of half-truths, assertions and over-the-top spin. I am shocked that on such thin evidence -- a Californian postgraduate thesis -- that we should be trying to convince the British people that this is a war worth fighting." [Telegraph Feb. 8, 2003]

The implications for Washington's war plans are serious. If Tony Blair loses a vote brought against him by his own party, the present Prime Minister of England will find himself suddenly unemployed. And Bush will be bereft of major backers.

Back in the USA, if "news managers" chose to expose the mass marketed "threat" of a shattered country they know to be bogus, outraged Americans would not take such betrayal lightly. And a blueprint drawn up long before Sept. 11 allowed its architects to kick it into high government gear could quickly come unraveled. [BBC Feb. 6, 2003]

But extensive U.S. televised coverage of Powell's prevarications and a story taking the rest of the world by storm never occurred.

The spookiest episode in this story came 24 hours after the BBC exposed empty excuses for mass murder in Iraq. By then, TV-watching, newspaper reading Americans interviewed by Lifeboatnews in Florida and California had yet to learn of a gaffe that has punctured Powell's pretensions and blown Bush's credibility abroad.

As Iran accelerates its nuclear weapons program to defend against an American attack they know is coming, and France moves this morning to block NATO from initiating plans to involve Turkey, mainstream media in Canada, Britain and across the USA continue to ignore revelations that shared U.S. and British "intelligence" on Iraq is years out of date. And cribbed from public sources. [Global TV Feb. 10]

Commenting on the media's self-censoring stories that trash all pretenses for war, Lifeboatnews editor Paul Grignon gripes, "It's as fixed as wrestling."

The American media's big snooze is good news for pretenders who remain in power only as long as they continue to hoodwink the people they seek to rule. By waving flags, suppressing contrary information, and pointing to successive "threats" of their own devising, the Bushwhackers depend on the zombie-like behavior of sedated and distracted masses, and a military as robotic as their weaponry. In their mutual rush to parrot empty slogans and do the bidding of "authorities" bent on conquest and murder, few question the consequences, veracity or legitimacy of their actions.

But deep questions are being raised, in an intense international forum called the Internet. Immune to cruise missiles and faked intelligence briefings, the power of the ever-wakeful web is to network the global village outside the filters of controlled information -- exposing official lies almost as fast as they can be floated.

No wonder the day after Sept. 11 a President-select announced that one of his first objectives was to get control over the Internet. Since then, his lavishly funded Department of Cyber Security is working to force all servers to submit to federal surveillance. [CBC Sept. 12, 2001]

But it may already be too late.

When critical mass is reached and the hundredth monkey logs on, it's all over for the Bush regime and their successors. Even now, with more than 620 million people logged on worldwide, incessant Internet revelations are illuminating a gang who:

1. Stole an election by rigging votes in Florida

2. Blocked investigations and interceptors that could have foiled 9/11

3. Experimented with mailing an army-designed strain of anthrax to Americans to boost sales of a vaccine jointly controlled by the Bushes and bin Ladens

4. Paved the way for a police state with freedom-canceling proclamations copied almost verbatim from laws issued by someone named Adolf Hitler. [NUA Internet Trends 2002; All Fall Down: The Politics of Terror and Mass Persuasion]

All this with nary a murmur from a cushy, compliant and culpable press owned by the same corporations who manufacture costly armaments for the conflicts their news networks "sell".

It's all documented online for anyone who cares to look. But information is only as powerful as the actions it prompts. Next weekend, organizers say that worldwide protests coordinated through the worldwide web could outnumber the massive anti-war demonstrations that ended years of unprovoked aggression against the people of Vietnam.

Despite the ballyhoo over a bogus briefing that appears to have hardened Russia's resolve to stick with China, France and Germany in opposing a war they cannot justify, the Gang of Four still intends to crush Iraq. [BBC Feb. 9, 2003]

It only makes sense when they admit that their long-standing agenda is not really concerned about Baghdad's bogeyman. "Project for the New American Century" notes that while Saddam Hussein poses no threat to the United States, the dictator can be "used as an excuse" to further aims that are all about oil. Whoever controls the world's last big oil fields, also controls a world running on empty. [Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sept. 29, 2002]

What happens next is anybody's guess. Intended as an indelible lesson to the world, we could be weeks away from unprecedented "live fire" demonstrations over Baghdad, Basra and Tikrit.

Or maybe not.

Type "peace protests" and hit Enter.

Fake terror alerts -- We're as stupid as they think we are

By John Kaminski <>

How stupid do they think we are? Only hours after our much-praised Secretary of State is revealed to have been using material plagiarized from a college student to justify why we're going to kill thousands of people with bombs, our government issues a terror alert and expects us to believe it?

And how stupid are we? We believe it.

Everybody takes it seriously even though Colin Powell has been shown to have perpetrated a colossal lie before the entire world, sitting in front of the assembled multitude of rectitude at the United Nations, exposed as having tried to pass off a decade-old college post-graduate thesis as supposedly cutting-edge Department of Defense intelligence. Used before the most august leaders of the world, this is supposed to be the best we can do? For all that money in the defense budget?

I mean, shouldn't we be embarrassed to be caught in such a childish lie? Could the U.S. government have reached a new low in their sluggish and unintelligent efforts to convince the world it should bomb everything that doesn't "love our freedom?"

But it didn't matter. The American people have become such dullards that apparently nobody made the connection concerning lying about the reasons for bombing Iraq and lying about the terror alert. Certainly not the TV news robots.

Stupidest of all? The terror alert was meant to cover up the Secretary of State's very own sophomoric faux pas, but the piggies needn't have bothered.

The TV anchorpeople, who worry a lot more about their hair than they do the fate of the world, didn't even blink an eye, didn't even make the connection, that if Powell is fabricating evidence culled from the out-of-date research - the grad student's work was assessing conditions in Iraq more than a decade ago - then what possible evidence could this most "humane" member of the Bush Cabal of Death have been using to suddenly whip up a new terror alert - which served no greater purpose than to take the world's focus off his own obvious incompetence and insincerity.

His own lies. There could be no clearer evidence that the United States is lying - not only about its own objectives but also about its own methods, its own performance - and, as I'm sure our genuine enemies would notice, and most dangerous of all - its actual capabilities. There may be no doubt that the U.S. could totally vaporize Baghdad, and no doubt that America's demonic weapons of mass destruction have turned large swaths of Third World countries into radioactive wastelands, but there are real doubts that this two-faced gang of armchair cutthroats have the ability, the will or the intent to defend our country.

Just look at the investigation into 9/11, the biggest crime in American history, and let me know if you see one. Just look at Enron, the biggest robbery in American history, and let me know if you see the big perps being brought to justice.

Lies. Everywhere you turn are lies, couched in trite buzzphrases, uttered by incompetent functionaries like Ashcroft, who couldn't even make a decent middle school debate team, not to mention Bush, who will never learn that sincere statements later learned to be false mean you can never reach people again.

Or maybe you can. Maybe people don't really care if the world is destroyed, if their own sons return to the Fatherland contaminated by radioactivity and poison vaccines. The insincerely enraptured media suckups, who have their own challenges to overcome, insist Bush is popular, but average people at the shopping center now only say that if they think the Homeland Security camera is on them.

Lies. Like the new information about the Patriot missiles that the U.S. has sold to practically every country that wanted one. During the first Gulf War massacre, the Pentagon claimed a 100 percent kill-ratio against those evil Scud missiles launched by Saddam. Now the news is the Patriot missiles never hit a single Scud, or that the kill-ratio was somewhere in the range of 7 percent, at best.

Just like the phony U.S. missile tests we see in the news every now and then Those missiles can't hit spit unless there's a GPS beacon in the target. But the well-coiffed media harlots always reports those tests as if they were some actual triumph of technology, rather than the totally bogus corporate political propaganda they are. Speaking of that, did you hear Raytheon, the company that made the Patriot missiles, was also hired to evaluate their performance, for a cool half million? It's the Arthur Andersen principle, still working fine.

Our genuine enemies - as opposed to the ones cooked up at CIA secret meetings and funded covertly by third parties (are you listening, Bob Graham?) - must be noticing that a Patriot missile couldn't hit a mule in the ass with a banjo.

Just like the phony scripted news alerts on CNN that don't mean anything, either - they just condition people to ignore all news alerts - all this talk about terror alerts reveals to our genuine enemies that we are all bluster without competence, all talk and no game, not to mention genuine toughness. Living the soft life of the complacent West, we rely on our high-tech toys to do our killing for us, and when those toys don't work, those softie Western soldiers have a real problem, like crashing their own helicopters or bombing their own allies because they're doing too many drugs. Too bad the war on drugs doesn't work on the drugs used for war.

The only reason for this terror alert was to take the focus off Powell's laziness, his unprofessional reliance on a British report that was nothing more than verbatim excerpts from an out-of-date war college paper, which he passed off as the best the American government could produce about its knowledge of what is really going on in Iraq. An utterly pathetic and incompetent performance by a government that has received a permanent free pass from uncritical media stooges.

These stooges are fakes themselves, and so is Powell, and so are his terror alerts. And by their belief in all these false statements - these fake terror alerts - so are the American people, who have become, in the eyes of so many innocents abroad, the scourge of the earth, for their misinformed malice and imbecilic indifference.

The biggest terror alert of all - 9/11 - was an event manufactured by the very people who are supposed to be our leaders, our benefactors, not our plunderers. Don't argue - the evidence is plentiful, despite the stalled official investigation. Now, the biggest worry becomes the matter of when they will decide we need another dose to convince us we are in danger and they are our saviors.

9/11 occurred at a time when the cabal was devising new and draconian restrictions on our freedom called the Patriot Act, which was passed shortly after that disaster. Now comes word that a new Patriot Act II has been devised in secret.

Can we make the connection between the act of writing the new rules for totalitarian control and the horrendous act necessary to justify its imposition? And can we make it in time?

Not likely, because we're as stupid as they think we are.
