Media Compilation #38: Questions No One Dare To Ask

Dear journalist

According to Al Martin ("The Tom Paine of the Internet" - see first article below) lots of people are allegedly being imprisoned in the US by local police "at the special request" of the Office of Homeland Security, based on secret lists with thousands of American sounding names on them. A per diem for keeping these people is "circuitously" paid to local sheriff's department pending adoption of various pieces of legislation and their incorporation into the USA Patriot Act. If this turns out to be true, it raises most serious concerns about what is actually going on in the U.S.

In addition, the National Transportation Safety Board, NTSB, has recently destroyed incriminating evidence proving that TWA Flight 800 was actually hit by missiles as seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses - see #2 below. Journalist James Sanders is still in jail for reporting the facts on this crash. Apparently, "the FBI was so nervous about what some of the recovered wreckage revealed that it would not allow non-FBI members of the official investigating team to see it." So it had to be destroyed.

So lots of questions to ask - if you dare to! - at the next White House Press conference...

Everybody's Got Their Own Terrorist

According to the Friendly Colonel, one of his friends who retired from the FBI and became a local police chief has told him that even in the small city jail he runs they're holding eight suspects under the terrorism act. They're being kept in a separate wing. It's interesting the way it works. The federal government picks up the tab. The sheriff told him that the detainees are not allowed to have any visitors, not even family. They're not even allowed to call a lawyer or have any contact with a lawyer. They can't send out mail or receive mail. As a matter of fact, they're not even allowed to put these guys' names in the computer to say they're holding them. Their names are kept on a separate hand written piece of paper that the sheriff has to keep locked up in his safe. These people are being kept "at the special request" of the Office of Homeland Security.

Some of the "detainees" have been arrested locally by the local nickel and dime police guys. They keep getting lists of names of people that are "wanted." The county sheriff's office is large enough so they have the ability to get "pink" cables from the Department of Justice. In other words, they keep getting classified cables with seemingly endless lists of names. He said there are thousands of names.

The sheriff's department isn't obligated to go out and grab them - only if they notice them in their jurisdiction. Thus far, the only thing that's paid for is a per diem for keeping these guys -- and that only circuitously because Washington has to jump through hoops to get them the money and it has to come under the guise of some sort of special funding program that doesn't really exist. They're not getting paid anything extra to go out and look for them, but he has said they have received notification as late as last week that indicated that as soon as "things settle down" and certain remaining pieces of legislation are passed and incorporated into the USA Patriot Act that the locals will be paid to go out and get the people.

And what nationality are these "detainees"? Perhaps aliens with green cards, or maybe people who wear turbans? Not at all, the former FBI agent admitted that where the nervousness is coming from at senior levels in federal law enforcement is that there are thousands and thousands of people who are being secretly detained in the United States. There are an awful lot of names on this list that are not Arabs. There are an awful lot of names on the list like "Smith" and "Jones" and "Johnson" and "Nelson." And there's no paper trail. Their names are being kept off computers. Even their families don't know where they are.

The Bush Administration is jumping the gun because even with the authority already given them and with the bills already passed to date to augment that authority, they don't have all the authority necessary to detain people and to do what they're doing, that is, detaining so many people and keeping them incommunicado. They're supposed to wait for the remaining pieces of legislation that are still outstanding to be passed. Then they'll have the authority to do what they're doing - but for right now, they don't. And what the FBI is nervous about is that if this gets dribbled out into the media or gets exposed in a big way, somebody in Washington is going to duck for cover and it's going to leave a lot of local guys with a lot of explaining to do. And they're not going to have any paperwork in their hands to say, "This is what I was told to do."

Other sheriffs have done the same thing. They're getting these confidential lists of names of people they're supposed to place under detention. They've been ordered to shred them right after. He knows that he (and a hell of a lot of other sheriffs in this nation, are beginning to keep these lists because people are getting concerned about covering their own ass.

There's a lot of nervousness about who's covering whose ass. As of now, the Department of Justice is not giving out bounties, just a per diem comp, just the standard fee which isn't much. They're not paying them anything extra yet, but they've been told that that's coming, that supposedly they will be getting paid extra for doing this. One thing that the feds have to be careful about is that most of the local jails and the county sheriffs are on a very tight budget.

They have a special wing of the jail they're using at Huntsville. It's a special wing devoted to this that used to be their "dry-out tank."

The media has circulated rumors before that there are far more people being detained both domestically and overseas than what the US Government has admitted, but the information in this column is an exclusive report on the details.

Like the sheriff said, "How many guys with the last name of Smith and Jones can have immigration or green card problems?"

Of course, even though he's a former FBI agent, he doesn't exactly know the intent of holding all these people who most likely don't have anything to do with terrorism or most likely aren't even connected to it. In other words, people are being held who couldn't possibly have any connection with terrorism. He thinks that a lot of the people they're holding are "potentially vocal people." He didn't go on to explain that. Then he said, "How do you think the government has gotten away with holding so many people for so long with names like Smith or Jones, completely incommunicado, yet nobody is running to the media. Why isn't there pressure building? Why aren't family members running to the local newspapers saying what's happened?"

The answer is that the people being held are, in some cases, people who have worked in very sensitive capacities for the US Government before and perhaps they know enough that they could be a problem down the line if they started to talk. By and large, these are people who don't have much family or may be very disconnected from family life. In other words, they come from family circumstances where they are used to being missed for months and sometimes years. That would be a normal course of events for them.

The FBI is generally familiar with Arabs that the CIA has associated with, including Arabs in the United States who are considered to be friendly. What it looks is a massive operation by the CIA to cover its ass, to distance itself from its own Arab connections. If they're in prison, they can't talk and say anything if they're held incommunicado.

It's like the sheriff said - if somebody from the Department of Justice or even the Department of Defense showed up tomorrow with DoD or DoJ credentials with a writ signed from the judge for the production of these eight people, I'd have to release them. I'd have no idea where they would go after that. All I need to see is the little stamp of Office of Homeland Security and that's it.

The sheriffs, when asked to release the detainees, would not even have the right to be informed as to the ultimate destination where the people are going.

The speculation from the FBI old-timers is that there are probably a variety of reasons why there are so many people being detained, the least of which is "terrorism." What they suspect is that by the number of Arab nationals being detained (knowing who these guys are and knowing their involvement with US intelligence in the past) that the CIA is doing a lot of housecleaning and covering its own ass.

He said, "How do you define terrorism?" You need new definitions - when everything is so interconnected.

Terrorists, for example, who went out and killed people or blew up buses full of kids, and who also had relationships with the CIA - are they then strictly "terrorists"?

The ambiguity of state-sponsored terrorism, or domestic terrorism, or international terrorism, then becomes one big muddle.

The FBI is arresting all these Arabs; then the CIA comes and grabs them and either lets them go or gets them out of the country and the FBI isn't even told where they've gone. This is why the FBI is nervous - because of the chaos of the situation. The FBI old timer says, "The CIA grabs people from us. The Department of Defense grabs guys from us that we're arresting. The British show up and we find out that this terrorist had actually been working with MI6. The French DST shows up and says, 'hey this of one of our terrorists.'"

They're not only protecting their own assets, but they're covering their own asses. Regarding the processing office at the National Intelligence Division of the FBI, they had a luncheon for some of the retired guys who were talking with some of the active duty guys getting close to retirement and they were laughing at how it looks like a mini-U.N. The British show up to claim their terrorists. The French show up to claim their terrorists. And then the CIA comes in to get their terrorists. He says, pretty soon we got nobody left, who actually is supposed to be a terrorist. He says I thought we had a war on terrorism and we were supposed to be declaring war on terrorism. But what a selective war it seems to be when all the supposed enemy targets and would be terrorists get whisked away by various intelligence agencies of different countries trying to cover their political liabilities. Everybody in the world shows up to claim them. He laughs and says that even the Russians have been there.

It really makes you wonder, though, how all this is getting financed -- holding all these people in detention. Millions are being spent looking for all these people that represent a liability to the United States or one of our allies. Then you look at these appropriation bills getting jammed through Congress, and Congress is in complete chaos. They're getting bills passed just about every day. A former Washington insider says that he doesn't know any member of the House or Senate that has actually read them.

What is happening apparently is the old Bushonian trick of appropriating $20 million, $15 million, or $50 million here and there for, in some cases, little esoteric subdivisions of divisions of departments, some of which haven't even been in operation in 40 years. That's the best scam - appropriating money for defunct agencies. There are legions of little office buildings outside of the crescent of Washington from Silver Springs over to Fort Mead and down into McLean, Virginia and Reston. There are row after row of little office buildings, and they're all leased by different agencies of the government.

There was one that was called something like the Appalachian Relief and Corn Investigation Bureau that was phased out in 1947 and they still have an office with a sign on the door. There's nothing in it. It's completely vacant and there's no furniture in it anymore, but they still rent the office for like $150 per month.

It reminds me of another story about the way government accounting works. If the media ever asked any questions, they can always say, "Oh yes we're aware that that bureau got closed down in 1947, but its functions were then assumed by Bureau
317-A of the Department of Agriculture." The when the media goes there and finds out that that was shut down in 1963. Then they say, "Oh yes, but then their functions were assumed by this other bureau." And the government can get away with it because a lot of the appropriations, if they're under $10 million per year for these esoteric little offices, they just come out as block spending authority, which isn't specifically listed by bureau because the government claims that the cost of the paperwork is too high. So the way it works is there are slush funds within slush funds. But it's a neat trick the way it's done.

Only God knows how much money is sucked out of the federal budget.

Here's another way money is sucked out for purposes other than what the appropriations have been designated - by using little arcane one man or two man bureaus, a subdivision of a subdivision of an agency that has long since been shut down - but continue to get funded.

Congressman Bill Alexander actually stumbled into this little bureau that was supposed to be part of the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) that was actually shut down in the 1940s. It supposedly had to do with the restocking of wildlife and reforestation planning, but it didn't do anything. It was what they called a "field planning office." He tracked it down and it ended up that $1.9 million annually still gets appropriated for it, but it's actually being used to subsidize a variety of exclusive congressional luxury golf course retreats. Of course, they're not called that. They're called "congressional study and research retreats."

In other news, it is interesting to report that when the final 50 odd pieces of legislation related to the USA PATRIOT bill are passed by Congress, more than likely under administration pressure before the need of this congressional term, the United States of America will no longer meet the legal definition of being a "free democratic state" in accordance with the definition, as put forth by our own Supreme Court.

The old American Republic now falls as Benjamin Franklin predicted it might -- not with a bang but with a whimper -- of naivete, apathy and blind "patriotism."

Hail the New Imperial Republic. . .

NOTE: This is not directly related but proves that there are LOTS of things the US government - no matter who is in the White House - is strenuously trying to hide...

From: freedompage@mindspring.com (Freedom Page)

Friends,

As many of you may recall, I was in the New York area the day TWA 800 crashed and saw many of the witnesses on the local stations state that a rocket took this plane down. So, I've followed this closely and noted the full page ad that many of the witnesses took out in USA Today that said that they were ignored by government officials and the FBI. These witnesses cared enough to spend a large amount of money to tell America that our government is lying and covering up this terrorist attack.

I've reported a lot of details in the past but would ask you: Why is it that the FBI would not allow the press, the public, or even the National Transportation Safety Board, who is supposed to investigate airplane crashes, access to the wreckage? The reason given by the FBI is that if it was a terrorist attack, it is a matter of National Security. However, at the same time, the FBI maintained that it was not a terrorist attack but an explosion of the center fuel tank. So, if it was not a terrorist attack, why not let the NTSB and the press investigate? The government can not have it both ways. Either it was a terrorist attack or it was not, in which case the NTSB should have done the investigation.

And, why put reporters who reported the facts on this crash in jail? For those who have not followed this, Mr. James Sanders was jailed for reporting the facts on this crash. Because members of the NTSB were concerned about the government cover up, pieces of seat fabric were given to Mr. Sanders for an independent analysis. The analysis, from an independent lab, West Coast Analytical Services, Inc., a California chemical testing laboratory, reported that the fabric was covered with a solid rocket fuel which is totally different from the fuel used by jet aircraft.

To my knowledge, Mr. Sanders is still in federal prison. And, now, like Waco and the Oklahoma City bombing, the FBI is destroying all evidence.

NTSB Destroys Incriminating Evidence
Reed Irvine
Dec. 14, 2001

The National Transportation Safety Board, NTSB, has secretly sent a large part of the wreckage of TWA Flight 800 to a Long Island junkyard for recycling.

Millions of dollars were spent recovering the wreckage from the ocean and transporting it to Calverton, where the fuselage was assembled as a mock-up to impress the public with what a thorough job the investigators - the NTSB and the FBI - were doing.

That was for show, but there was other wreckage that they didn't want shown. Journalists and private investigators were not allowed inside the Calverton hangar to inspect the bulk of the recovered wreckage, but even members of the official investigating team were not allowed into a special area where the FBI secreted items that they didn't want the representatives of the NTSB, TWA, Boeing and the interested unions to see.

The fuselage mock-up will be preserved, together with one of the four engines. The destruction of the rest was carried out in July and August of this year. The recycler says that he had to pledge to keep it secret to get the contract. Long Island's News Channel 12 learned about it only recently.

The NTSB claims that all interested parties were told what they intended to do. The parties who are most interested, those who have carried out their own investigations and are convinced that the government's explanation of the cause of the crash is bogus, were not notified.

The NTSB denies that it kept the demolition secret, but it's clear that it did so. It knew that there were many people interested in the TWA 800 case who would have strenuously objected to the destruction of evidence that they believed would prove the NTSB and FBI had covered up the real cause of the crash - hits by missiles that were seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses.

The FBI was so nervous about what some of the recovered wreckage revealed that it would not allow non-FBI members of the official investigating team to see it. It was kept in a special room that only FBI special agents could access.

Other investigators complained that evidence was taken to that room and never seen again. Now we will never know what vital bits of evidence were hidden in that room.

One of them may have been part of the tail assembly of a drone manufactured by Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical, TRA, in San Diego. We know from a misdirected fax that the FBI asked TRA to send an official to Calverton to see if he could identify some bright orange wreckage.

After seeing it, the official asked his office to send him a parts list and drawings of the tail assembly of the BQM-34 Firebee 1. When I questioned him, he first said it was just junk, but he then switched and said he saw a part similar to a TRA product and that he sent for the drawings to prove that it wasn't theirs.

If it wasn't from a Firebee, it must have been from another drone, evidence the FBI hid and the NTSB has destroyed.

Maj. Fritz Meyer was piloting an Air National Guard helicopter when he saw TWA Flight 800 hit by missiles. Later he viewed the wreckage in the Calverton hangar and was struck by the heavy damage done to a nose wheel and tire. An NTSB official with him remarked that experts told him it was caused by a bomb.

The "bomb" must have been attached to a missile. That was also evidence that had to be destroyed.

When part of the leading edge of the right wing was tested for explosive residue by an Egis machine, 12 positive hits were registered. Maj. Meyer flew the wing section to Washington to be retested by the FBI crime lab, which reported that all but two of the 12 hits were false positives.

Dr. Frederic Whitehurst, the FBI's top explosives expert until he was assigned to a different job when he became a whistle-blower, says that the lab failed to follow proper procedures in retesting the wing.

In any case, there were two positive hits for explosive residue, evidence that a missile had exploded near the plane. That evidence was a serious threat to the government's theory of the cause of the crash.

The destruction of so much evidence that could be used to prove that the government has covered up the real cause of the crash of TWA 800 may have been legal. However, those who ordered it apparently feared they might not have been allowed to get away with it if they did so openly, because it is morally outrageous.

Hail George, Conqueror of Evildoers!

Dear George W. Bush:

Hats off to you, sir, for a job well done! The Soviets tried for ten years to do what it took you only two months to accomplish in Afghanistan. How did you do that? It's funny how a couple months ago there were all these Taliban, and now -- there aren't any! You must be some kind of super magician -- almost as good at disappearing acts as ol' Osama (or, as they say on the Fox Nuisance Channel, "Usama" -- I like their spelling better, like "We put the 'USA' in USAma!"). He did exist, didn't he? I would hate to have gotten myself all worked up over the wrong evildoer! I loved that last tape of his, the home video of his sleepover with that sheik. What a party animal, that guy!

And how 'bout that Northern Alliance! Thanks to them, my weekly supply of heroin will finally be reinstated. Whoo-hoo -- and just in time for New Year's Rockin' Eve! Those Taliban simply did NOT have the best delivery system for the stuff, kinda like why you never see Beaman's gum anymore -- poor distribution and shelf placement. According to the New York Times, the Northern Alliance has put all the poppy farmers back to work, and they are promising a "bumper crop" by spring.

But Mr. Bush, I am most impressed with how you have used those who died on September 11th to justify your lining the pockets of your rich friends and campaign contributors. Your "Economic Stimulus Bill" -- pure genius! You actually got the House of Representatives to pass a bill eliminating the law that said corporations have to pay at least a token minimum tax every year.

See, most people forget that back in your daddy's day (when he was VP) thousands of companies were able to lawyer their way out of paying any taxes at all! Then a law was passed to stop that. Now you got the House to agree to give all these corporations back ALL the minimum taxes they have paid since 1986!! That's $140 billion of givebacks ($1.4 billion to IBM, a billion to Ford, $800 million to GM, etc.). And you got this passed, all under the guise of "September 11th!" How do you get away with this without the American public whoopin' your behind? Man, you are THE MAN!

Hey, and tell your top sheriff, Big John Ashcroft, that his refusal to let the FBI look at the files of gun background checks that the Justice Department keeps -- to see if any of the terrorists or suspected terrorists have purchased weapons in the past two years -- took some balls! Even though checking those files might turn up information that could protect us in possible future attacks, Ashcroft was more concerned with not upsetting the NRA than in helping his own FBI catch the bad guys. Now that's what I call getting your priorities straight. Big John may have lost his Senate seat last year to a dead guy, but he sure as heck ain't gonna lose me as a huge admirer!

Well, I better go before someone from the Office of Homeland Security mistakes me for someone who needs to be "interviewed!" Rest assured I'm doing my part for the country by shopping my sorry ass off in this week before Christmas. Buy! Buy! Buy! Tora! Tora! Tora! Bora! Whoo-hoo, Prince O' Peace!! Fight Team Fight! Go get 'em, George, Jr. -- we're counting on you to kill all evildoers!

Subject: Smell a rat?

Have your activities come under increased scrutiny in the aftermath of Sept. 11? Ours have.

Recently, our Corporate America Flag billboard in Times Square, New York, attracted the attention of the federal Department of Defense, and a visit by an agent who asked a lot of pointed questions about our motivations and intent. We wondered: What gives?

"Just following up a lead from a tip line," the agent admitted.

That's the kind of fourth quarter it's been for many social activists. Any campaign that dares to question U.S. economic, military or foreign policy in these delicate times, any critical appraisal of the handling of the "War on terrorism," risks casting the critic as a kind of enemy of the state, if not an outright terrorist.

Vigilance we can live with. Intimidation that amounts to persecution is another bucket of fish. According to some of the emails and phone calls we've received lately, many other groups have also found themselves under investigation in a political climate that's starting to take on shades of McCarthyism.

Our response to all of this is to set up our own "rat line." If you know of social marketing campaigns or protest actions that are being suppressed, or if you come across any other story of overzealous government "information management," please tell us your story. Florida firm to sell microchips for humans

Posted December 20, 2001

A Palm Beach company plans to become the first to sell microchips designed to be implanted into human beings, an achievement that opens the door to new systems of medical monitoring and ID screening.

Implantable chips have long been discussed by technologists and even denounced by those who object on religious grounds or fear their use by a totalitarian state.

But Applied Digital Solutions, which has tested the chips in a 55-year-old New Jersey man, says the specter of terrorism is shifting attitudes about such devices. The direct union of man and computer is no longer dismissed out of hand.

"The bottom line is, when people are trying to regain their peace of mind, they're more open to new approaches," said Keith Bolton, Applied Digital's chief technology officer.

The company's stock gained 7 cents a share Wednesday, closing at 45 cents on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Applied Digital, which had revenues of $165 million last year, has made its mark by selling electronic chips that help farmers keep tabs on the health and safety of their livestock. The company also makes a monitoring bracelet for Alzheimer's patients so families can use global positioning satellite systems to find loved ones who might have wandered off.

Now the company sees a market among those who have artificial organs and limbs. These folks will have up to 60 words of relevant medical information implanted on chips. If the patients are brought unconscious into an emergency room, technicians equipped with special scanners will easily decipher the body's internal topography.

The chips would need approval from the Food and Drug Administration, which Applied Digital says it expects to receive by mid-year. The company says it already has secured permission from the Federal Communications Commission -- necessary because the chips use radio frequencies.

Regulatory approval is not necessary overseas, however. Applied Digital expects to be selling chips in foreign countries in about 90 days. One potential market is kidnap targets, who could use these chips in combination with GPS devices.

Other potential applications would put the chips in the role of an ultimate ID.

"I'd be shocked if within 10 years you couldn't get a chip implanted that would unlock your house, start your car, and give you money," said Chris Hables Gray, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Great Falls in Montana and author of The Cyborg Citizen.

Indeed, an English cyberneticist, Kevin Warwick, won considerable notoriety three years ago by implanting an electronic transmitter above his left elbow. The implant opened doors and switched on lights at his British University of Reading offices. He is now working on experiments in which his nervous system is linked with a computer.

The Applied Digital volunteer, surgeon Richard Seelig, said he sees himself as simply a consultant thrust by events into an unexpected role.

Seelig had been working with Applied Digital since early this year. He expected to do a traditional scientific study, calling for volunteers who wanted to test out the role of chip implants. Then came the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. Five days later, Seelig injected himself with the chips.

"One of the potential applications suddenly jumped out -- the ability to have a secure form of identification," he said.

So he injected one chip into his left forearm; the other went next to the artificial hip in his right leg. Each could hold the equivalent of about 60 words, although at the moment they just contain serial numbers.

The chips that will be marketed next year are not true tracking devices. The next generation of body chips -- one that transmits signals from a distance is still several years away.

THERE ARE PEOPLE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE POTENTIAL ABUSES OF THIS TECHNOLOGY...
