The Light Series #22: Nurturing Hope in the Face of Adversity

Hello everyone

Even if I have 6 other compilations that I could send you, this one feels much more important right now because it focusses on the positive and, hopefully, because it helps nurture hope in the face of adversity as its title suggests.

Pass it on to others!

Jean Hudon
Earth Rainbow Network Coordinator

P.S. I recommend to your attention my latest Media compilation #69: The Gripping Power of Fear and Denial --- Posted at

I also heartily recommend that you request the Quan Yin's Earth Council Newsletter for April - This new group originally called the Council of Women has now adopted this new gender neutral name to help catalyze (as I understand it) the resurgence of the feminine energies and principles in both women and men. Here is a brief quote:

"This newsletter focuses upon peace initiatives: those works attempted on the international scene, and more importantly, the actions we can take as individuals to create peace on earth. We are not helpless, though at times it may seem that way. We are cause and effect, master creators in our lives. And in taking responsibility for this fact, acting upon it instead of reacting, we become what we already are - Beings of Light and Peace. In presenting these articles to you, we pass along more tools for your use, opportunities for you to act on your intent, and we hope, power to act responsibly. Thank you for your work, your prayers, your never-ending Being. Namaste, Ashantay."

One of the featured articles "OPTING OUT OF THE FEAR MATRIX" will be of special interest to many of you... For inquiries about the Earth Council, and becoming a member and thus receive the newsletter, please send your message to

A Precious Human Life

"Every day, think as you wake up,
Today I am fortunate to have woken up,
I am alive, I have a precious human life.
I am not going to waste it.
I am going to use all my energies
to develop myself,
to expand my heart out to others,
to achieve enlightenment
for the benefit of all beings.
I am going to have kind thoughts
Toward others.
I am not going to get angry,
Or think badly about others.
I am going to benefit others
As much as I can."

Subject: We Are One

Hi Dear Jean,

I hope you are well and thank you, as always, for keeping us so well informed. I too have felt the imbalance you mentioned today. In addition to changing our focus from the negative situation to the positive one, over the past few weeks, it has felt increasingly clear to me that what we really need to meditate on is not peace or cessation of oppression or lessening of greed, but something else.

That something else is the liberation of the earth from the veils of illusion we have been under for some time that we think are real... that we are separate beings from one another and that one of us is good or better than or more deserving than or more peaceful than or more right than or anything than another, despite appearances and feelings to the contrary.

If we all, or enough of us, really truly GET it that we are all one, we would understand that these situations are created from a place of unconscious need to learn over and over the emotional and soul lessons to bring us to this very truth... if we were really clear that when we hurt another we are literally vs metaphorically hurting ourselves, we wouldn't do it. If we were really sure that when we starved another we ourselves are going hungry, it wouldn't happen. If we understood than when we hurt our environment, we are not only hurting the 7th generation away and affecting 10 and 100 and 1000 years from now, we are also literally hurting our own physical selves, things would change.

I would like to propose that we meditate on our gentle awakening to the essential truths of the universe, so that ALL the other situations that currently exist would also change when this one does.

There is a truth here that exists for us all and is known out in the galaxy that has been kept hidden from us for eons. Knowledge of this truth will set us free and back on track for our proper evolutionary progress. We are beginning to realize this truth in physics, in medicine, working with energy, and esoteric spiritual understandings. It is encoded in the Language of Light and essential to realize before we can be given the keys. The All That Is... We are One... We are Love... Isn't it time we learn this lesson for good and move on for some new learning?

Love and blessings to you Jean and to everyone,

Subject: A Time of Decision

I believe this will be of interest to many people on this list.

A Time of Decision

by the Master*

As reported to Benjamin Creme

The world is in a severe state of crisis, engendered, in the main, by the US President's response to the terrorist attack of 11 September last year. The war in Afghanistan and the recent upsurge of Israeli brutality are linked, as is the proposed attack on Iraq. Basic to each is the settlement of old scores.

Such behaviour of childhood is an ignoble and irresponsible method of dealing with events which threaten the well-being of the world. The Masters do not advocate appeasement of terrorism, but the manner of response in Afghanistan and the Middle East is not to Our taste. It takes no account of the causes of terrorism - the poverty, frustration, humiliation and despair - and merely perpetuates the violence and brutality. Lost in the glamours of self-pity and injured pride, America has lost also wisdom, caution and a sense of proportion.

Israel, meanwhile, stung into action by suicide bombings, as always over-reacts, using as excuse "a war against terrorism" to impose its will. In the shameless persecution and humiliation of Mr. Arafat, Israel's leaders and army should take no pride. The people of Israel, more than most, should understand the agony of the oppressed.

When will these men learn that the world belongs to all? They are neither rulers nor policemen whose wealth and might confer control of others. When they share that wealth for the General Good they will see the end of terrorism, and sleep at night more soundly. The men of power, who seek to run the world for the benefit of the few, are drunk on the power which they wield, unearned.

More and more, it becomes evident that a wiser voice is needed in the world, one that will be listened to from many points of view. Such a voice, the voice of Maitreya, will soon be heard above the cries for revenge and hate. Soon, the world will awaken to His presence in our midst and the Great Choice will be offered to men. Thus is this a great testing time for humanity. Thus is this the time of decision, a time without precedent.

When men understand this, they will rally to the banner of Maitreya and make known their demands for justice and freedom. They will show their willingness to share and to serve, and thus remake this world.

Thus will it be, and thus will men renew their ancient pledge, and retrace their footsteps to divinity.

Dear Jean

I was moved by the idea of the Women's Tribunal. There is a Native American prophecy (echoed in many other Indigenous lands) that says: "When the Grandmothers Speak, the Earth will Heal." Let it be so! May it also be supported and shared with the Grandfathers and men of our world so that all can learn to live in Peace.

Subject: Where is the 'Movement'?
Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2001

Dear Jean,

Let me first say thank again for the lightwork you are doing. It is both inspiring and illusion-shattering.

A week ago I came into possession of a telephone directory-sized book called "The Movement Toward a New America" assembled by Mitchell Goodman. I don't know if you're familiar with it but it's a compilation of articles and editorials that had been published by alternative press firms like "The Berkeley Tribe", "Rising Up Angry", "Old Mole", "The Great Speckled Bird" etc. This printing was dated 1972.

As I began reading the bits I felt tears coming to my eyes. The impassioned fight for peace, for freedom, for decency was massive back then. The college students, the blacks the hispanics, the feminists, the many many minority groups that were suffering from the growing trends of institutions united and found a common voice to yell and scream out their discontent. They subjected themselves to violence and sometimes even death for the sake of their causes, all of these causes were truly American in the strict sense of the word.... Freedom of Speech, Equality for All, Freedom to Assemble, Freedom to protest government policies and corporations that were verifiably criminal in their operations.

The overall message relayed by this massive compilation was that this "resistance' is merely the beginning of a long revolution... Nearly thirty years later as I sit here and nibble at the bits and pieces of this ancient manuscript I feel my heart pounding harder. I wonder where did this revolution go? Have all the 'Hippies' grown down and become 'Yuppies'? Has the generation after them become mindless automatons of the System? The solidarity and immensity of 'The Movement' that was evident in this book seems to have been swept away.

Did I sell my eyes out of their sockets?

Did I plug my ears to avoid the noise?

Did I trade my soul for a lump in my pocket?

Trying to save myself from the Cutting Boys.

Wake up and look around.

Is there shelter to be found?

When the big greed giants are finally coming down.

There is no denying it. All of us know. We have allowed ourselves to be herded like sheep into this holding pen fearfully expecting the worst. Sheeple. Denying truth. Denying logic. Denying love. Is there any 'Movement' left or are we all going to remain trapped here in this institutional holding pen awaiting the total slaughter of our morals.

"When we left the house that blood built, we knew that we had descended from the mountain to join with those who dwell in the valley. And, when we looked into each other's eyes, we knew that the road back had been sealed by the avalanche of what we had seen." Abe Peck (From "The Movement Towards a New America".)

Live in truth,

Leo 'Sueg'

Hi All,

A good friend of mine, who works as a healer, called me last night and posed a question to me: What did I see happening astrologically at the moment (?) because she has had an upsurge in clients with very strong complaints and more than the usual aches and pains. I had looked at what is coming before and thought I would share it with you. There is a very strong configuration of planets in the making now, to peak in May, and the effects are already making their appearance. Those of you who work in the healing arts yourselves may resonate to or identify with what my friend is experiencing.

Beginning now, but especially so throughout May, most of the "personal" planets (those most closely associated with personal life) will transit in opposition to Pluto and conjoin Saturn. The fun just keeps coming! What that means shortly, but to backtrack a little, remember Sep 11? Who can forget, right? Then Saturn was opposing Pluto and much of the world was rocked to its foundations. There has been stuff clearing out on a massive scale ever since. Everyone has been affected in some way and has had very deep psychological baggage being pushed to the surface for scrutiny and release. Well, Saturn is back again opposing Pluto (It moved off a while and has now come back.) with a few other planets to boot. If we did not get things right the first time around we have a second chance now, but the internal dynamics will be even more intense. Nothing of a personal nature will escape this time. Hang on and enjoy the ride!

There is a very clear message which the upcoming alignment presents:

Be at peace (as much as possible) for a great healing and/or resolution is occurring.

I will not go into al the planetary dynamics. Those who are astrologically inclined can do it for themselves. The message is more important than all the technical matters. This alignment will affect us all in our own way, but will be especially strongly felt by those born under mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) or those people who have many planets in those signs in their birth charts. The long and the short of its effects are as follows:

--If "bad" things happen, there is an opportunity to change one's life for the better.

--If a situation ends and/or people leave your life, let them go. Those things were likely meant to pass.

--Events will shake the masses of people in the world.

--There will be much deathing, both literally and figuratively, and an intense clearing away of obstacles

--Don't take things personally. Focus on meanings rather than events.

--Look inward and "upward" when things seem all too much, rather than taking things out on others.

--Renew connections with loved ones and embrace those whom you encounter.

--Draw out the good in others rather than focusing on differences.

One could say these statements should apply all the time, and they do. But they are particularly marked now. The Middle East is a prime example of what not to do and of what focus upon differences can cause. Hopefully we can all emerge from events with a new sense of brotherhood and renewed commitment to live our lives with more spiritual potency. Gemini (where Saturn is) all about brotherhood and the lessons contained therein. Sagittarius (where Pluto is) about the world of higher meaning and what is standing in the way of it. Great awareness is possible out of all this, if we would only avail ourselves of the opportunity, which is very great at this time.

I feel quite hopeful and -dare I say-excited by what is going on. There is no need for people to feel negative. Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose, and feelin' good is good enough for me...

My heartfelt joy to all of you. I hope we can all support each and stay in touch, whatever your circumstance may be. If you feel a need feel free to pass this on. Talk with you all soon.

Spirit Aid Event

Together We Can Make a Difference

Come and join us for a Festival of Peace followed by a Spirit Aid concert featuring Music, stories and short talks by children, and also by people who wish to share their wisdom of life as well as their hopes for a better world. After Spirit Aid you will feel a warm glow as you realise how.

The Event

Spirit Aid is a live event that will take place in a 60,000 seat stadium in Glasgow, Scotland on July 20th & 21st 2002.

It will be beamed live to the world on TV, radio and via the internet.

Whilst raising millions of pounds for charities around the world, Spirit Aid will create inspiration in people’s lives. It will demonstrate how through the power of the human spirit we can lead happy and abundant lives, free from fear, poverty and injustice. Spirit Aid is a celebration of life and the inherent goodness in people to show love, compassion forgiveness and kindness.

The centre piece of the event will naturally be the live music performances. We are inviting many of the world’s best known bands, singers, and musicians to take part.

The messages will be given by children, world leaders, international celebrities, and authors that will reflect the essence and spirit of this special event. We are inviting the world’s most prominent peacemakers, spiritual teachers and religious leaders of all faiths.

And Maybe even Miracles

The miracle of the weekend will be the people around the globe pledging and raising the many millions of pounds that will be used to help the poor and underprivileged of our planet, those devastated by war, hunger and persecution in our midst. Constantly through the weekend, beamed in by satellite will be reports of the many miracles and signs of hope that are daily around us in all the many cultures of the world, stressing that we are all one on our journey on this planet.

Children of the world will be a major feature of the event, as they express their hopes and dreams for the world they wish to inherit and the respect and equality they deserve now. Their stories will be told. The artists and world leaders taking part will be led on stage and introduced by these children.

World Peace Festival

We intend also to create a ‘World Peace Festival’ in our city for one week leading up the event for all cultures of the world to meet in celebration of the best in human spirit and cultural diversity, through music, discussions and workshops. We are inviting Peace Envoys from around the globe to gather in Scotland and participate in producing declarations of peace on our behalf. The whole week will be broadcast live on the Internet.

It will be about our commonality not our differences!
It will be about our generosity not our greed!
It will be about our love not our hate!
It will be about our future, not our past!

"How to Tell if a Dogma is Friendly"

by Swami Beyondananda

In the wake of that recent vicious dogma bite that led to an unfortunate fatal karma crash, people are asking all kinds of questions: Why do we let killer dogmas run free? How do we deal with rabid dogmas? Can formerly-vicious dogmas be trained to sit, stay -- and most importantly, to heal? In other words, can you teach an old dogma new tricks?

Yes, it's a dogma-eat-dogma world out there, filled with pit bulls whose bull pits them against other dogmas. And while we might be tempted to raise a stick to these bad dogmas, any dogma-trainer will tell you that you cannot train a dogma to be loving and obedient by beating it. To win a dogma's heart, offer it a treat. Say, "Good dogma. Sit. Roll over ... heal."

Now of course it's sad but true that when a dogma is foaming at the mouth and is clearly rabid, it must be put down before it infects other innocent creatures. Even the most sentimental dogma-lover understands that. So to help us all, I have divided dogmas into two categories: Angry, unfriendly FundaMENTALIST dogmas, and the happier, more friendly FUNdamentalist ones.

FundaMENTAList FUNdamentalist

Accent on the mental. Accent on the fun. Heaven is above us. Heaven is where you make it. Ours is the One Way. One Way? Do not enter! Laughter is frowned upon. Frowning is laughed upon. Vow of chastity. Vow of levity. An eye for an eye. Live and let live. You stone people. People get stoned on their own.

Now the good news is, even the baddest dogma can change simply by changing their emPHAsis to another sylLABle. And to help teach these dogmas to heal, I am launching a Blisskrieg to warm the heart of even the most fearful and angry dogma. And we begin by kindling the spark of peace in our hearts and turning it into a bright flame. Then we share this spark of peace to light everyone and everything we come in contact with. It's a fight to the life! We will light them on the land, we will light them on the sea, we will light them in the air! We will even shine the light of love and laughter into their caves!

And maybe with enough light, enough of us will get so frustrated with the stupidity of dogma-fighting, we'll just surrender and say, "Ah, peace on it!" And with a little peace here and a little peace there, who knows? We may end up with one Big Peace everywhere, and both Nonjudgment Day and Disarmaggedon will come to pass.

To hear Swami's song about Nonjudgment Day, click here.

"Serious Humor for Serious Times"

A funny thing happened on the way to the Age of Aquarius. Somehow we musta got lost, because it looks like we took a detour through the Age of Nefarious instead. There we were, blithely driving our karma down the carefree global highway and wham -- we ran smack into a vicious dogma.

Some might say we got blindsided, but I say we ignored many of the danger signs along the way. Not only were we poorly prepared to wage war with terrorism, we were more importantly unprepared to wage peace with those whose hearts and hopes have been hijacked by the terrorists.

Albert Einstein once said that a problem cannot be solved at the level it was created, and sadly it looks as if we are about to prove him correct once again. We've been drawn into a pissing match in hell against an enemy that is ultimately one billion strong and has a thousand-year-old grudge against the West and a religion whose name is peace, but whose practice is too often vengeance. Of course, there has to be a bright side to this, right? Or, as the theatergoer said, "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how'd you enjoy the play?"

Well, there is a bright side, and the bright side is back here on the "Om front." My friend Dean Sluyter, whose new book is called The Zen Commandments: Ten Suggestions for a Life of Inner Freedom, (J.P. Tarcher, 2001) says: "You know those spiritual practices we've been doing for all these years? This is what we've been practicing for." For while we can only exert a very limited levitational pull on the gravity of worldwide events, we can still choose to be peaceful, loving and yes -- even joyful -- within the scope of our own lives. Dean recommends a daily practice which the Tibetans call tonglen. He calls it "Bless Everyone:"

"Sit with eyes closed and allow another person's image to arise in the space before you (or if you find it easier, just feel his or her presence). Let the sense of separation between the two of you melt. Imagine all the person's suffering, confusion and worry surrounding him or her as a cloud of dark, hot, toxic smoke. Then as you inhale, draw the smoke into your heart and purify it, transforming it into pure white light. As you exhale, breathe out happiness and healing in the form of that light, and shower the other person with it." Click here to hear Steve's "innerview" with Dean Sluyter and to find out more about his book.

This picture began circulating in November. It should be "The Picture of the Year," or perhaps, "Picture of the Decade." It won't be.

In fact, unless you obtained a copy of the paper, you probably will never see it.

The picture is that of a 21-week-old unborn baby named Samuel Alexander Armas, who is being operated on by a Surgeon named Joseph Bruner.

The baby was diagnosed with Spina Bifida and would not survive if removed from his mother's womb.

Little Samuel's mother, Julie Armas, is an Obstetrics Nurse in Atlanta. She knew of Dr. Bruner's remarkable surgical procedure.

Practicing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, he performs these special operations, while the baby is still in the womb.

During the procedure, the Doctor removes the uterus via C-section and makes a small incision to operate on the baby.

During the surgery on little Samuel, the little guy reached his tiny, but fully developed, hand through the incision and firmly grasped the Surgeon's finger.

The photograph captures this amazing event with perfect clarity.

The editors titled the picture, "Hand of Hope."

The text explaining the picture begins ... "The tiny hand of 21-week-old foetus, Samuel Alexander Armas, emerges from the mother's uterus to grasp the finger of Dr. Joseph Bruner as if thanking the Doctor for the gift of life."

Little Samuel's mother said they "wept for days" when they saw the picture. She said, "The photo reminds us that my pregnancy isn't about disability or an illness, it's about a little person."

You can see "The Hand" of the foetus in the actual picture, and it is awesome ... incredible.
